Latest / Foul Territory / Ken Rosenthal's Inside Scoop: Mets trade assets available, Cardinals buy/sell, Adley Rutschman's future
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Inside Scoop here with Ken Rosenthal. Ken, before we get
- 0:09Speaker 1: into baseball talk, I just want to know, are you
- 0:11Speaker 1: gonna send.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Me money for my phone bill?
- 0:13Speaker 1: When you would not stop texting me and calling me
- 0:16Speaker 1: when I was on family vacation over in Italy because
- 0:19Speaker 1: you had to scoop everybody about the Pope. And I
- 0:21Speaker 1: was like, Ken, can I tell you tomorrow? I was
- 0:23Speaker 1: kind of intoxicated. I was sitting at a bar and
- 0:26Speaker 1: the next thing you know, it's got to be now
- 0:28Speaker 1: or else we're not running the story.
- 0:31Speaker 2: AJ.
- 0:31Speaker 3: That is actually an accurate portrayal of our conversation. And
- 0:35Speaker 3: I'm amazed you admitted that. But I will now refer
- 0:38Speaker 3: to you as your eminence because of course you now
- 0:41Speaker 3: have this distinction of being the only member in the
- 0:44Speaker 3: baseball community I believe to have met the Pope. And
- 0:48Speaker 3: I appreciate you getting back to me. And I'm not
- 0:50Speaker 3: paying your phone bill. You got a lot of money.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Are you kidding me?
- 0:53Speaker 3: Ken?
- 0:54Speaker 1: You won't buy me dinner, you won't pay for my
- 0:55Speaker 1: phone bill. It was like twenty minutes. You won't even
- 0:57Speaker 1: buy me a drink. Can at least buy me a drink?
- 1:01Speaker 3: I mean, after reading the pope. That's what we're reduced to.
- 1:04Speaker 3: You're worried about me buy you a drink. I think
- 1:06Speaker 3: you'd be above that by now. Did you meet any
- 1:08Speaker 3: other dignitaries? Did you settle any other world problems while
- 1:11Speaker 3: you were there?
- 1:11Speaker 2: No?
- 1:12Speaker 1: No, but I got to see Andrea Bocelli saying, which
- 1:14Speaker 1: was kind of awesome, and uh, that's pretty cool San
- 1:17Speaker 1: Marco Square in Venice, and just having to walk into it,
- 1:20Speaker 1: it was, it was pretty awesome. So you know what
- 1:22Speaker 1: it was. There was a fence, right and so I
- 1:25Speaker 1: was standing on the steps behind the fence. You would
- 1:27Speaker 1: have had to have gotten on my shoulders to see him,
- 1:29Speaker 1: but I was tall enough to see over the fence
- 1:31Speaker 1: for free.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Well a j let me do this. Let me offer
- 1:34Speaker 3: a public thanks for taking my call and answering the questions.
- 1:38Speaker 3: By the way, you did not sound intoxicated. You were
- 1:41Speaker 3: perfectly fine. So it was great. Thank you very much.
- 1:45Speaker 2: You're welcome. Ken, thank you, that's just a good man.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Big wait, wait, before all this, before all this. First
- 1:52Speaker 4: of all, Ken, he asked you for a free drink,
- 1:56Speaker 4: and he said he didn't pay to watch a concert.
- 1:59Speaker 2: What is the what are you like?
- 2:01Speaker 4: Overarching like hey, da, are you cheap?
- 2:07Speaker 2: People that know me will tell you I am not cheap.
- 2:09Speaker 3: All right, I will do respect, all due respect to
- 2:12Speaker 3: major leaguers. It seems like the motto of the entire
- 2:15Speaker 3: sport is if it's free, it's me. I hear it
- 2:19Speaker 3: all the time from guys. So AJ is simply acting
- 2:22Speaker 3: the way a lot of people act.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Okay, The motto is if it's free, I'll take three.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So you speaking of people, speak speaking of people that
- 2:35Speaker 1: have a lot of money. The Mets they have a
- 2:37Speaker 1: lot of money. Stevie Cohen, David Stearns, they have a
- 2:40Speaker 1: lot of money. What are they gonna do with the
- 2:42Speaker 1: trade deadline? We were just talking about this, Freddy Parolta
- 2:44Speaker 1: is a possibility, Luke Weaver, Boba Shitt. Where do the
- 2:47Speaker 1: Mets stand in the trade deadline?
- 2:50Speaker 3: Clearly they're going to be sellers. They've already sold in
- 2:53Speaker 3: a sense by trading David Peterson to the Cubs and
- 2:55Speaker 3: Will Samon of The Athletic had an interesting story yesterday
- 2:58Speaker 3: kind of outlining the different possibilities, and one thing that
- 3:03Speaker 3: stood out to me was this idea of trading Francisco
- 3:06Speaker 3: Alvarez now catchers at the deadline are difficult to trade sometimes,
- 3:11Speaker 3: though you guys know this from playing all these years.
- 3:14Speaker 3: The adaptation to a new staff can be difficult, but
- 3:17Speaker 3: it's not an insurmountable thing. So they're going to trade. Certainly,
- 3:21Speaker 3: they're two left handed relievers, Brooks Rally and aj Minter
- 3:25Speaker 3: both are potential free agents. As you guys were discussing
- 3:28Speaker 3: in the previous segment, they're going to trade Peralta and
- 3:30Speaker 3: they're gonna have to hope he starts pitching better than
- 3:33Speaker 3: he has. Bobachhett, I can't see it. Why would any
- 3:36Speaker 3: team take on the risk that he opts in at
- 3:39Speaker 3: forty two million a year for the next two years.
- 3:42Speaker 3: You'd like that to happen. I guess if you're getting
- 3:44Speaker 3: the good, Bobashett, but there are very few teams that
- 3:47Speaker 3: would even entertain the idea. There are others as well
- 3:50Speaker 3: that I'm sure they will listen on it. I think
- 3:52Speaker 3: they will listen on everyone. They have to listen on everyone.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And don't forget Clay Holmes coming off the injured list,
- 3:59Speaker 3: potential free agent, and he's certainly someone who will attract attention.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Is there hurdles that he needs to get through for
- 4:07Speaker 4: the Mets to extract the amount of value that if
- 4:09Speaker 4: he is hot, if he was one hundred percent healthy
- 4:11Speaker 4: and he's had the numbers that he had for the
- 4:12Speaker 4: last year and a half, he would be the largest
- 4:16Speaker 4: piece or the most enviable piece from other teams. Is
- 4:19Speaker 4: there a hurdle that he needs to get across or
- 4:21Speaker 4: is it like a Shane Bieber type of thing where
- 4:23Speaker 4: they're like, hey, we know what we're gonna get once
- 4:25Speaker 4: he's healthy.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I am sure that teams will be monitoring his rehab
- 4:31Speaker 3: closely as we get closer to the deadline. It's inevitable
- 4:34Speaker 3: that they will do that. That's what teams did with
- 4:35Speaker 3: Bieber last year. You remember he was pitching well on
- 4:38Speaker 3: his rehab assignment and that of course increased the value
- 4:42Speaker 3: and the Blue Jays made that deal. This is, as
- 4:44Speaker 3: you mentioned, Eric, the same kind of scenario, and I
- 4:48Speaker 3: expect that, Yes, as long as he's coming along, well
- 4:51Speaker 3: he'll be moved.
- 4:54Speaker 2: All right, Well, Ken, what about Sorry?
- 4:57Speaker 1: I was watching Argentina give up another goal again, so sorry,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I was a little bit distracted right there.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:02Speaker 1: If you have the eminence, you can do whatever you want. True,
- 5:04Speaker 1: that's a great point after USA is disappointing performance. Ken,
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm sure you stayed up late to watch last night,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but the Mets are a team that are so interesting
- 5:13Speaker 1: to me. And I saw somewhere today where someone said
- 5:16Speaker 1: Francisco Lindor could be on the block. Is there any
- 5:19Speaker 1: way in hell that they would move Lindor? Would they
- 5:23Speaker 1: be able to do this at the trade deadline?
- 5:27Speaker 3: I don't see it. And the one person who reported
- 5:30Speaker 3: it was Mike Francessa, the radio talk show host in
- 5:33Speaker 3: New York. With all due respect to Mike, he is
- 5:36Speaker 3: not a Beat reporter, and I have not seen any
- 5:39Speaker 3: of this from any of the Beat reporters. I have
- 5:41Speaker 3: not heard it myself. If anything, as Will Salmon wrote
- 5:45Speaker 3: last week, the situation between Lindor and Juan Soto is
- 5:49Speaker 3: better than it was last year. At least that's what
- 5:51Speaker 3: they're saying now. Maybe it's this great, big cover and
- 5:55Speaker 3: ultimately they're going to have to do something. And at
- 5:57Speaker 3: the start of the year, when this was stillingering, I
- 6:01Speaker 3: thought it was possible that Lindor could be this year's
- 6:03Speaker 3: Ralphield Devers. But if indeed he's getting along better with Soto,
- 6:09Speaker 3: I don't see it happening, and it would be also
- 6:12Speaker 3: potentially more of an off season move if it did so.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Aj you know this and Eric you know this too.
- 6:19Speaker 3: You can't rule out anything entirely at this time of
- 6:22Speaker 3: year because crazy things will happen. I say it all
- 6:25Speaker 3: the time. Things will happen that will make our head spin.
- 6:28Speaker 3: But this one, to me seemed like a bit of
- 6:30Speaker 3: a reach.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Hey, for the families out there looking for a different
- 6:37Speaker 5: path to help your child succeed at home, look into

- 6:50Speaker 5: done the homeschooling thing in the past.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I know you liked it.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Yeah, I did. I liked it a lot. All my
- 6:55Speaker 6: kids have done it before. It's an opportunity for them
- 6:59Speaker 6: to stay at hall and enjoy school just as much.
- 7:02Speaker 6: They learn a lot. And this is an opportunity for
- 7:05Speaker 6: families that are on the go too as well. They
- 7:07Speaker 6: have to understand, Listen, can't be at a regular school
- 7:10Speaker 6: at all times. I need my child to be doing this,
- 7:13Speaker 6: whether it's an athletic career or whatever. Stature they are
- 7:15Speaker 6: at and we loved every second of it, and I
- 7:18Speaker 6: think it is an easy opportunity for some children.

- 7:30Speaker 5: com slash foul. K twelve dot com slash foul.
- 7:35Speaker 6: All right.
- 7:35Speaker 4: David Stearns was given the dreaded vote of confidence last
- 7:39Speaker 4: week from Stevie Cohen, the owner, but he's still there.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Is there a chance that we're just talking about all
- 7:46Speaker 4: this it's really just going to be anybody on expiring contracts,
- 7:48Speaker 4: and there's nothing big that the Mets are gonna do.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Because Stevie Cohen's trusting in David Sterns process, which can't
- 7:57Speaker 4: be just a one year turnaround, even though he did
- 7:59Speaker 4: so many crazy things.
- 8:02Speaker 3: It's certainly possible that they limit this to expiring contracts.
- 8:05Speaker 3: But even if they do that, they can do a lot.
- 8:08Speaker 3: We mentioned Peralta and Holmes and Minter and Rally. Those
- 8:11Speaker 3: guys all will have different levels of value, but they'll
- 8:15Speaker 3: have value. Now, do you extend it a little further?
- 8:18Speaker 3: To do Luke Weaver, who is under control for next year.
- 8:21Speaker 3: That depends on how they see themselves, and it also
- 8:23Speaker 3: depends on the offers they get, because with any player,
- 8:29Speaker 3: virtually any player, if you get enough, you'll trade them,
- 8:32Speaker 3: and that's kind of the way the game works. So
- 8:35Speaker 3: I would not be surprised if they just did, for
- 8:37Speaker 3: the most part, expiring contracts. But I also would not
- 8:40Speaker 3: be surprised if they extended it and did trades along
- 8:45Speaker 3: the lines of Weaver. Wouldn't have to be Weaver, it
- 8:47Speaker 3: wouldn't have to be Francisco Alvarez. But perhaps it's someone else,
- 8:51Speaker 3: maybe that we're not seeing. Who knows, Maybe one of
- 8:53Speaker 3: their younger pitchers, not becclaim, but maybe one of the
- 8:56Speaker 3: other ones.
- 8:57Speaker 2: All right, Kim.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Before we get to more trades and more names on
- 9:00Speaker 1: the trade block, I also saw where Carlos Beltron is
- 9:02Speaker 1: back is the favorite to be the Mets manager. Andy
- 9:06Speaker 1: Green is there on an interim. I got to talk
- 9:07Speaker 1: to him on Saturday. He's kind of in limbo. He
- 9:10Speaker 1: was the director of something, senior vice president of baseball
- 9:15Speaker 1: some yeah, okay, yeah, he had a fancier title than that,
- 9:17Speaker 1: but farm director is right. Would Carlos Beltron after they
- 9:21Speaker 1: hired and fired him after the whole Astros thing. Would
- 9:24Speaker 1: he be the right choice you think for him to
- 9:26Speaker 1: take over after all that that he went through already?
- 9:30Speaker 3: In my opinion, they need more experience. They need someone
- 9:33Speaker 3: who can come in and who has done the job
- 9:35Speaker 3: before and can walk into that clubhouse, handle New York,
- 9:39Speaker 3: handle everything that comes with being the Mets manager. Now,
- 9:43Speaker 3: Carlos Beltron certainly has played for the Mets and certainly
- 9:47Speaker 3: is familiar with New York. He's also played for the Yankees.
- 9:50Speaker 3: My concern with Carlos would be he's never managed before.
- 9:54Speaker 3: He's never even coached before. Now he's been kind of
- 9:56Speaker 3: a it's bering training instructor certainly as players, but that
- 10:01Speaker 3: to me, in New York, where the scrutiny is greater
- 10:05Speaker 3: than it is in most markets, that to me would
- 10:08Speaker 3: be dangerous and the last thing they need at this
- 10:10Speaker 3: point is a risky higher. Now you might ask, well,
- 10:13Speaker 3: who's the right guy. I'm not sure. David Ross is
- 10:16Speaker 3: out there, Brandon Hyatt is out there. There are others
- 10:19Speaker 3: as well that they could look out. Rock o'beldelli would
- 10:22Speaker 3: be one again, I'm not sure, but Beltron being the
- 10:26Speaker 3: favorite ag. I'm not sure where you're getting this from,
- 10:29Speaker 3: but I'm.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Not Twitter, Ken, Twitter, Ken, Twitter, It's on Twitter. It's true.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Okay, yes, sir, your eminence.
- 10:40Speaker 2: It's on Twitter. Ken. I can't argue with it, all right.
- 10:43Speaker 1: If only the head buck Showalter to manage Oh wait,
- 10:45Speaker 1: sorry that ship sail.
- 10:48Speaker 3: But Showalter, in my opinion, would be the way to go. Now.
- 10:53Speaker 3: It wouldn't be him, They're not going to go there again.
- 10:55Speaker 3: But someone with a little bit of gravitas to him,
- 10:58Speaker 3: a little bit of juice, a little bit of been there,
- 11:02Speaker 3: done that, Maybe that would be the right way to go.
- 11:07Speaker 4: No, We're we're gonna we're gonna go to the We're
- 11:09Speaker 4: gonna go to the NL Central here so to me.
- 11:12Speaker 4: One of the names that is intriguing to me, but
- 11:14Speaker 4: I know everyone's looking for right handed, out out hitting
- 11:17Speaker 4: outfielders is Lars Newpar. Lars Newpar has been bantered about
- 11:22Speaker 4: as the Cardinals. Nobody can have him now. Possibly he's
- 11:26Speaker 4: getting older, he's got one more year after this year,
- 11:29Speaker 4: before arbitrayed or before free agency. Is there a chance
- 11:33Speaker 4: there's a good market out there for him? A guy
- 11:35Speaker 4: with only two home runs so far, this year.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Well, he only has two runs because he just came
- 11:39Speaker 3: back a couple of weeks ago from the heel surgeries,
- 11:42Speaker 3: both heels that he had operated on. So he's a
- 11:45Speaker 3: left handed hitter, and yes, the demand from right handed
- 11:49Speaker 3: hitters is greater. And the Cardinals are in a really
- 11:51Speaker 3: interesting situation because he is a leader in their clubhouse
- 11:55Speaker 3: and they're playing really well. They're essentially in a playoff
- 11:59Speaker 3: position right now, so from that perspective, you would think, nah,
- 12:04Speaker 3: not a great idea to trade him. And the other
- 12:06Speaker 3: thing that goes with that is you want this young
- 12:09Speaker 3: team to be playing meaningful games in September, and if
- 12:12Speaker 3: you trade Newt Bar you're taking something away. Now I
- 12:14Speaker 3: don't know what you're getting back. And if you're getting
- 12:17Speaker 3: back a starting pitcher, at least someone with control, then
- 12:22Speaker 3: if you're the Cardinals, you have to look at it.
- 12:24Speaker 3: But it's going to be an interesting one because remember
- 12:27Speaker 3: they traded Brendan Donovan when he was a leader of
- 12:29Speaker 3: the team, and of course well entrenched there, but that
- 12:33Speaker 3: was the off season. They weren't playing any games. Then
- 12:35Speaker 3: now they're playing games, they're playing games rather well, and
- 12:39Speaker 3: they're in the middle of course, right now with a
- 12:40Speaker 3: big series with Milwaukee. But to trade him off of
- 12:44Speaker 3: this team, a team that has surprised virtually everyone in
- 12:48Speaker 3: the sport, that would be more difficult to do than
- 12:52Speaker 3: trading Donovan was in the middle of the offseason.
- 12:55Speaker 1: By the way, Ken, before I ask, it was a
- 12:59Speaker 1: fellow i'll be insider on foul territory, Bob Nightingale that
- 13:02Speaker 1: reported Carlos Beeltron. So I know you guys, you insiders
- 13:05Speaker 1: have little battles that you fight. But it was Bob Nightingale,
- 13:07Speaker 1: So you owe Bob an apology. Ken, you can go
- 13:09Speaker 1: ahead and give it now.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Maybe Bob is right. I don't know. I just don't
- 13:12Speaker 3: see it that way.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Okay, that's fair, that's fair.
- 13:15Speaker 1: But don't question my sources, Ken, A good newsman never
- 13:18Speaker 1: reveals the sources. Okay, yes, all right, but you mentioned
- 13:24Speaker 1: the Cardinals in Lars new part. But Dustin May has
- 13:26Speaker 1: been bantered around to you. I know he's on a
- 13:29Speaker 1: one year too. But the Cardinals are in this. They're
- 13:31Speaker 1: a half game out of the wild Card. They're right there.
- 13:34Speaker 1: What they really do this? Would Hein Blum really make
- 13:37Speaker 1: a move to do something like this, even though they
- 13:40Speaker 1: have a chance, and there's actually excitement again in Saint Louis, AJ.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Maybe you can make that kind of move and get
- 13:46Speaker 3: something back that will help you right now. Doesn't necessarily
- 13:49Speaker 3: mean you're giving up on the season. It depends what
- 13:52Speaker 3: you're getting back and what we might see in this
- 13:55Speaker 3: particular deadline with so many teams bunched together, is need
- 14:00Speaker 3: for need type trades involving major league players. So let's
- 14:04Speaker 3: say you're the Cardinals, and I'll use Newt bar because
- 14:07Speaker 3: I think he's a better example. The Cardinals do need
- 14:10Speaker 3: to keep their pitching intact, in my opinion, nukepar can
- 14:13Speaker 3: bring you a starter, as I mentioned, or maybe bullpen help,
- 14:17Speaker 3: whatever the case might be. Guys that can help you
- 14:20Speaker 3: or one player that can help you right now, and
- 14:22Speaker 3: maybe it is under control. Yeah, then you consider that
- 14:25Speaker 3: if you believe in the end your twenty six man
- 14:28Speaker 3: roster is an even better place for this year and
- 14:32Speaker 3: next year are in going forward. So yes, these are
- 14:35Speaker 3: not outrageous thoughts to ponder with the Cardinals or any
- 14:40Speaker 3: other team for that matter, because of the nature of
- 14:42Speaker 3: the races right now then, being as close as they are,
- 14:46Speaker 3: so many teams feeling they are in it. Yeah, you
- 14:49Speaker 3: might see Major leaguers from Major leaguers go.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Cap.
- 14:56Speaker 4: I've been looking for the best deals for the All
- 14:58Speaker 4: Star Game tickets in Philly. Where are you going to
- 15:00Speaker 4: get some tickets from?
- 15:02Speaker 7: I'm going straight out to Rife Field. If Harper and
- 15:05Speaker 7: Schwarber both joined the home run derby, I want to
- 15:07Speaker 7: be catching the hometown guys hitting them, So I'm going
- 15:09Speaker 7: out to the Rife Field kind of where I think
- 15:10Speaker 7: I could get the best chance of catching one of
- 15:12Speaker 7: those home.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Runs, maybe in the second deck. You can go on
- 15:15Speaker 4: the app and you can look to see what your
- 15:17Speaker 4: view is going to because the boys are going to
- 15:18Speaker 4: be launching them jhones. And with over thirty five million downloads,
- 15:21Speaker 4: see Geek is the number one rated ticketing app. There
- 15:25Speaker 4: are more than seventy thousand events listed at seekk, including concerts, sports, festivals,
- 15:30Speaker 4: and more. And of course I have a code for
- 15:33Speaker 4: you all. You can use the code Territory ten for
- 15:35Speaker 4: ten percent off your next set of MLB tickets at
- 15:38Speaker 4: sea Geek. That's ten percent off MLB tickets with promo
- 15:42Speaker 4: code Territory ten. Make sure you click the link in
- 15:45Speaker 4: the description to download the app and have the code
- 15:48Speaker 4: automatically added to your account so you could use it later.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Thank you to Sea Geek and we'll see you at
- 15:53Speaker 4: the game.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:54Speaker 4: You said on Fair Territory that the Brewers owe it
- 15:58Speaker 4: to themselves too, and then you kind of like looked
- 16:01Speaker 4: around make a move.
- 16:03Speaker 2: What does that mean?
- 16:04Speaker 4: Because I said in the offseason, I said, I think
- 16:06Speaker 4: this is the year they should have kept Peralta before
- 16:09Speaker 4: they traded them and gone after Schooble and had a
- 16:12Speaker 4: year of Freddy Peralta and Trek Schooble for the entire season.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Because to me, they're not going for the playoffs. There's
- 16:18Speaker 4: either a move that helps him win the World Series
- 16:21Speaker 4: or don't make any moves. But what were you talking about?
- 16:24Speaker 3: Basically that that they're in a position now where they're
- 16:29Speaker 3: coming up a year when they won ninety seven games,
- 16:31Speaker 3: made it to the NLCS and got swept by the Dodgers,
- 16:34Speaker 3: had a great year, got swept by a team that
- 16:36Speaker 3: was playing at an absolute peak level. It's not because
- 16:40Speaker 3: the Dodgers had more money, they were just playing better
- 16:42Speaker 3: at the time. The Brewers are really good. So you're
- 16:46Speaker 3: the Brewers this year, You've got a similar type team,
- 16:49Speaker 3: at least in terms of its quality, not the same
- 16:51Speaker 3: players of course, and you have a chance maybe to
- 16:55Speaker 3: do something special in the postseason and maybe go a
- 16:58Speaker 3: little bit further. You also have a great farm system,
- 17:02Speaker 3: the highliest, the highest rated farm system in the game
- 17:05Speaker 3: right now. In fact, they have multiples at certain positions
- 17:09Speaker 3: in fielders for instance. So why not take a shot
- 17:13Speaker 3: at it. It's not their way. We know that, we
- 17:16Speaker 3: know the Brewers are a team that thrives even after
- 17:19Speaker 3: they subtract, so why should they necessarily go add But
- 17:23Speaker 3: in my opinion, yes, this is the time for them
- 17:26Speaker 3: and these chances to whin. You guys know this, they're precious.
- 17:31Speaker 3: And the Brewers, who knows where they'll be next year
- 17:35Speaker 3: or the year after that, But here they are now,
- 17:38Speaker 3: they're in this great spot. They probably will be in
- 17:40Speaker 3: great spots going forward because of what I just mentioned
- 17:43Speaker 3: the system. So you take a little bit away from
- 17:45Speaker 3: that system to help you now doesn't have to be schooble.
- 17:49Speaker 3: There are any number of ways they can go. They
- 17:51Speaker 3: could use a left side infielder, they could use probably
- 17:55Speaker 3: some bullpen depth, maybe a starting pitcher as well. Anything
- 17:59Speaker 3: that they do to supplement themselves would be the right thing.
- 18:03Speaker 3: To do, and they should not simply stand pat They
- 18:05Speaker 3: should go for it.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Great agree, not School, but another Tiger. Let's talk about
- 18:11Speaker 1: a couple other Tigers that have been rumored. Clavor Torres,
- 18:14Speaker 1: he can play third base for the Brewers if they
- 18:16Speaker 1: needed him to. He's done it before, right or Casey Mees.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Are the Tigers so far out of it that School's
- 18:21Speaker 1: not the only name they would think about trying to move.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Would they possibly think about moving to Torres, who's on
- 18:26Speaker 1: expiring contract? Casey Mice, who's pitching really well? Would they
- 18:29Speaker 1: think about making some other moves to build for the future.
- 18:32Speaker 3: If they sell, those two guys will be in play.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Both are on expiring contracts. The question is still will
- 18:38Speaker 3: they sell now? When there were sixteen games under five hundred,
- 18:42Speaker 3: twenty two and thirty eight, I wrote that's it, They're
- 18:45Speaker 3: gonna sell. They should sell because even with expanded playoffs,
- 18:49Speaker 3: no team sixteen under has ever come back and made
- 18:53Speaker 3: the postseason. Okay, since then, they're eighteen and twelve. This
- 18:57Speaker 3: was starting June first. They are so or to back
- 19:00Speaker 3: in this thing. They've got the fifth best run differential
- 19:03Speaker 3: in the league. Even after all the bad things that
- 19:05Speaker 3: happened earlier, and in the wildcard race they're five back.
- 19:11Speaker 3: So if you're the Tigers, you're looking at this and
- 19:14Speaker 3: you want this to play out more, you're certainly not
- 19:16Speaker 3: making any decisions today. I still don't see it with them.
- 19:21Speaker 3: It's going to be really hard for them to keep
- 19:23Speaker 3: up the pace that they're going to need to play
- 19:25Speaker 3: at all season without margin for era. But in the
- 19:29Speaker 3: AL Central which is weak, in the American League, which
- 19:33Speaker 3: is weak, is it possible that they surge here? I
- 19:36Speaker 3: had a GM tell me yesterday he thinks that's going
- 19:38Speaker 3: to happen, and ultimately they end up keeping their guys.
- 19:41Speaker 3: So we've got nearly a month to the deadline. AJ
- 19:44Speaker 3: and I would say that they're not in a position
- 19:47Speaker 3: yet where they're deciding anything. They want to see how
- 19:50Speaker 3: this plays out, all right.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Michael Lias said that they do not want to trade
- 19:56Speaker 4: Adlie Rutchman. We want him to be here forever. Is
- 20:00Speaker 4: that almost like an ultimatum comment, like, hey, we're going
- 20:04Speaker 4: to give you an extension or this would be the
- 20:07Speaker 4: time that we trade him, Because isn't that essentially where
- 20:10Speaker 4: the ORG is with Basaio that is possibly there for well,
- 20:14Speaker 4: it's going to be there for a long time, but
- 20:16Speaker 4: could possibly be their catcher.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Well, Adlie Rushman has one more year of club control
- 20:21Speaker 3: remaining after this one, so you have to entertain the
- 20:26Speaker 3: question at least of what our future is if you're
- 20:28Speaker 3: the Oriols with Adlie Rushman, no question about that. If
- 20:32Speaker 3: you're going to sign him to an extension, it's not
- 20:34Speaker 3: going to be a five year deal or a six
- 20:36Speaker 3: year deal. It's going to have to be longer than that.
- 20:38Speaker 3: He's going to want to be essentially a lifetime Oriol.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Maybe the Oriols want to do that, maybe they don't.
- 20:44Speaker 3: If they don't want to do that, then they should
- 20:47Speaker 3: be at least open to the idea of a trade. Now,
- 20:50Speaker 3: maybe wouldn't happen necessarily this season, Maybe it happens in
- 20:53Speaker 3: the off season when he has one year of control left.
- 20:56Speaker 3: But you can't simply let this play out and have
- 21:00Speaker 3: him walk at the end of next year, assuming we
- 21:04Speaker 3: have next year, and just say Okay, that's it. That's
- 21:07Speaker 3: not the way to go. It's extension or trade at
- 21:09Speaker 3: some point. And this is what we've talked about actually
- 21:12Speaker 3: in the past at school. Should have been extension or
- 21:14Speaker 3: trade with him earlier, so they could have maxed out
- 21:17Speaker 3: their value.
- 21:18Speaker 2: They didn't do that.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Okay, understandable, you've got the best pitcher in the sport,
- 21:21Speaker 3: but that's the decision. Ultimately, the Oriels are going to face.
- 21:27Speaker 1: The problem I see Ken before we let you go,
- 21:29Speaker 1: is that no team has two catchers on deals like that.
- 21:33Speaker 1: So you got most teams have one who's their primary
- 21:36Speaker 1: catcher and if it catches one hundred or so games,
- 21:39Speaker 1: sometimes one hundred and ten, whatever, and then they have
- 21:41Speaker 1: their backup catcher. Now guys are starting to get paid
- 21:44Speaker 1: a little bit better to be that guy that catches
- 21:46Speaker 1: fifty or sixty games. So you can Oriels afford to
- 21:49Speaker 1: have Pasio and then sign Adlete to the deal he's
- 21:51Speaker 1: gonna want. That just doesn't seem likely in the way
- 21:55Speaker 1: that the game is paying.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Keep in mind, keep in mind you have a d position,
- 22:00Speaker 3: and also Besio plays for a space and one other point.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Aj your essential point is correct, You're right, teams generally
- 22:08Speaker 3: don't pay two catchers, but you have the other positions available.
- 22:12Speaker 3: And also Basio's deal it's eight years, sixty seven million.
- 22:16Speaker 3: It's essentially a deal that covers him through his arbitration
- 22:19Speaker 3: years and I'm not sure how many free agent years
- 22:21Speaker 3: I guess two. So it's not an oppressive deal by
- 22:25Speaker 3: any stretch of the imagination. In fact, assuming he stays healthy,
- 22:29Speaker 3: the Oils are going to win on that deal because
- 22:32Speaker 3: it's relatively affordable. So that should not preclude them from
- 22:36Speaker 3: wanting to keep another really good player, a guy who,
- 22:39Speaker 3: by the way, was the number one overall pick in
- 22:42Speaker 3: the draft over Bobby Wick Junior. And that is a
- 22:45Speaker 3: factor in all this as well. He is their guy.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, but you know, tell that eight year
- 22:50Speaker 1: sixty seven isn't a lot to the Marlins.
- 22:55Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Don't tell him that that luck man. Just just go
- 22:59Speaker 1: for it. By the way, before we let you go,
- 23:01Speaker 1: how was that rain delay on Saturday? We really enjoyed
- 23:03Speaker 1: going to one hundred percent of the country, So thank
- 23:06Speaker 1: you for letting me go to one hundred percent of
- 23:07Speaker 1: the country on Saturday.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Well, your eminence, it is a situation where the country
- 23:12Speaker 3: needs to hear what you have to say.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Especially since we got we got to get the pope
- 23:17Speaker 1: stuff in, we got to get sales debut in with
- 23:19Speaker 1: me catch I mean there was it worked out perfectly, Ken,
- 23:22Speaker 1: So see, this is what happens when you're in touch
- 23:24Speaker 1: with higher powers, Ken, they do things to help their
- 23:27Speaker 1: friends out.
- 23:28Speaker 3: See, I can't question it anymore. You bet the Pope
- 23:33Speaker 3: you gave him a baseball. I mean, there's nothing I could.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Say for rain in Chicago.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He prayed for rain in Chicago, by the way, just
- 23:44Speaker 1: so that I could get that extra fog.
- 23:47Speaker 2: And oh the fog was nasty.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I was watching that game after our game was over,
- 23:50Speaker 1: like two hours later, and you can barely see the outfield.
- 23:52Speaker 2: And there's no way they saw you in the in
- 23:54Speaker 2: the dugout.
- 23:57Speaker 3: No, they didn't see me in the dugout.
- 24:00Speaker 1: All right, Well, Ken, thank you, have a great week.
- 24:03Speaker 1: We will talk to you on Friday.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Again, Yes, sir, thank you. I appreciate it.
- 24:08Speaker 1: I won't, but someone won't, So thank you. FT Insider
- 24:12Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal. Have a great week, Ken, and we'll talk
- 24:14Speaker 1: to you on Friday.
- 24:15Speaker 7: Thanks AJ
