- 0:03Speaker 1: All right, we are gonna talk a little bit of
- 0:05Speaker 1: Cincinnati Reds right now and they're off season, a little
- 0:09Speaker 1: bit about their to do list. Guys, I'm gonna pose
- 0:12Speaker 1: the first question to you about Ace Hunter Green. He
- 0:17Speaker 1: has three years and forty two million left on his contract.
- 0:20Speaker 2: There have been.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Rumors that the Reds, if I have to say this
- 0:24Speaker 1: phrase one more time today, I'm gonna die, but like,
- 0:26Speaker 1: have listened, but don't have any intention of trading Hunter Green. Eric,
- 0:32Speaker 1: what's your reaction to that.
- 0:35Speaker 3: And thought to to your visceral hate for listening. Let's
- 0:39Speaker 3: do both.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Let's do both, my viscral.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Have you ever told somebody I wish you were a
- 0:44Speaker 3: better listener? Like, maybe that's a good thing that somebody says,
- 0:50Speaker 3: you know what, we are listening. You know why they're
- 0:53Speaker 3: listening because their teams that don't want to spend money
- 0:56Speaker 3: and they have the most capital ever. It's like they
- 1:00Speaker 3: have this big like coupon that just is sitting there like, ooh,
- 1:04Speaker 3: I'm gonna cash this in for something, well, you know what,
- 1:08Speaker 3: like they don't need to. Maybe the Reds should have
- 1:10Speaker 3: looked at themselves and been like, you know what, we
- 1:13Speaker 3: didn't really build the entire roster, and we you know,
- 1:16Speaker 3: our hitters weren't quite who they thought we thought they
- 1:18Speaker 3: were going to be. We have an ace at the
- 1:21Speaker 3: number one. He's not an ace a number one at
- 1:23Speaker 3: the top of our rotation that you know what, It's
- 1:27Speaker 3: okay to say, we're gonna listen, but it's also okay
- 1:30Speaker 3: to not go anywhere because he's got three more years
- 1:32Speaker 3: on his deal and he is below market value. No,
- 1:36Speaker 3: they're not going to trade him because I think it's
- 1:38Speaker 3: still in this winning window.
- 1:41Speaker 1: All right, I've heard we have a guest ready for
- 1:44Speaker 1: us to talk a little Red.
- 1:45Speaker 3: He knows he's not a spell.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I don't know how to spell. I'm still trying to learn.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And I think it's the wrong sport too.
- 1:56Speaker 4: So yeah, maybe we welcome in Danny Graves, who knows
- 2:03Speaker 4: a lot more than we do about the Reds.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So, Danny, we need to know what are your top
- 2:08Speaker 1: three to do lists? To do things on your to
- 2:11Speaker 1: do list for the Reds this offseason.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I'll explain the hat real quick for you, Cratzy. So
- 2:17Speaker 2: it's hockey weekend. I have to travel for travel hockey
- 2:20Speaker 2: for my ten year old son. Soon as I get
- 2:22Speaker 2: off this I'm going to pick them up from school
- 2:24Speaker 2: and we're going to Dallas big tournament this weekend. So
- 2:26Speaker 2: that's the reason I have the hockey attire.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Soop Speed got speech and coming on with us. We
- 2:33Speaker 3: love it. Yeah, I hope you got no traffic.
- 2:36Speaker 2: No traffic, that's so I'll driving through Austin is awful,
- 2:40Speaker 2: So it'll take me like seventeen hours. But here's the thing.
- 2:43Speaker 2: What I got for the Reds, what I wish the
- 2:45Speaker 2: Reds could do. I really think they need to solidify
- 2:49Speaker 2: their bullpen. Emilio Pegan was great for them last year
- 2:52Speaker 2: at the back end thirty two saves, one of eight
- 2:55Speaker 2: in all of Major League Baseball that had thirty plus saves.
- 2:59Speaker 2: It's hard to fight that guy at the back end
- 3:02Speaker 2: that could shut down games for you. He is a
- 3:05Speaker 2: free agent. Whether they'll try to sign him back, I'm
- 3:08Speaker 2: not sure. I know he's going to be demanding a
- 3:10Speaker 2: lot more money than probably the Reds want to pay
- 3:13Speaker 2: for a closer, So they need to go out and
- 3:15Speaker 2: find somebody. Tony Santia did a great job eighty games
- 3:19Speaker 2: last year a sub three era. Could he close possibly,
- 3:22Speaker 2: But I do feel like they need some kind of
- 3:24Speaker 2: veteran leadership in the bullpen. Also a power bat. We
- 3:28Speaker 2: need some pop at great American small park. Guys twenty
- 3:32Speaker 2: two home runs led the team last year, and Elie
- 3:35Speaker 2: de la Cruz. I believe it's twenty two. That's not
- 3:38Speaker 2: enough for that kind of ballpark. You need guys that
- 3:41Speaker 2: can drive the ball out of the ballpark. You know
- 3:43Speaker 2: that one swinging the back can change the game. And
- 3:46Speaker 2: also I think they need to solidify the outfield.
- 3:49Speaker 3: TJ.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Friedel's been really good. Noel Vie Marte has been awesome
- 3:54Speaker 2: the transition from third base to right field. But they
- 3:57Speaker 2: need somebody else. They need a guy like maybe Kevin.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I don't know if he's gonna come out of retirement,
- 4:02Speaker 2: but you need a guy that can run him down
- 4:03Speaker 2: and catch the ball and know where to throw it
- 4:06Speaker 2: every single time. I'm not trying to talk you into anything, Kevin.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I'm just saying no.
- 4:10Speaker 5: When I was reading this list, when I was reading
- 4:12Speaker 5: this list, I'm like power baton, I don't feel it
- 4:14Speaker 5: sounds like me. If twenty two homers, If twenty two
- 4:17Speaker 5: homers is like the barometer of power, I think I
- 4:20Speaker 5: got twenty two left.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Although right now, so right handed I would prefer and
- 4:28Speaker 2: there you are.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I mean, I think KP could hit KP could hit Dingers,
- 4:33Speaker 3: although something happened with the human door and in Great
- 4:36Speaker 3: American small park. I don't know. That's another discussion. We're
- 4:39Speaker 3: going to stick to your to do list and I'm
- 4:40Speaker 3: gonna hit the first topic, the bullpen. Yeah, I think
- 4:44Speaker 3: every team is going to have that is on their
- 4:46Speaker 3: to do list, you know, add to the bullpen. Everybody
- 4:48Speaker 3: wants to do that. Do you feel like it's an
- 4:51Speaker 3: easier job because of the fact what Derek Johnson has
- 4:56Speaker 3: done with this, with this starting rotation with Terry Francona
- 5:00Speaker 3: feels comfortable letting this starter rotation go deeper because some
- 5:03Speaker 3: teams we just talked about the Mets, those dudes are
- 5:06Speaker 3: out of there in the fourth inning, like you got
- 5:08Speaker 3: to build you got to build an entire new bullpen
- 5:10Speaker 3: because you killed them all this year. Do you feel
- 5:13Speaker 3: like it's an easier job? And I know it's a
- 5:16Speaker 3: small market, so they're not gonna spend a ton of money,
- 5:18Speaker 3: but is it easier to find guys that can fill
- 5:21Speaker 3: in because you don't have to have such a deep bullpen?
- 5:26Speaker 2: So I don't know if it's easier Cratzy. I do
- 5:29Speaker 2: think they're gonna have more options because they have starters
- 5:32Speaker 2: that can go deeper and they're younger guys that still
- 5:35Speaker 2: have a lot of bullets left in the tank. So
- 5:38Speaker 2: I do feel like they want to go out and
- 5:41Speaker 2: look for somebody. Like last year they brought in Pegan.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I don't think they were expecting him to be their
- 5:45Speaker 2: guy that has thirty plus saves, But you bring in
- 5:48Speaker 2: a veteran guy who has a little bit of experience
- 5:51Speaker 2: and then you see what happens. Maybe let Santiain start
- 5:54Speaker 2: it the season as a closer and then have somebody
- 5:57Speaker 2: to back him up just in case. But it does
- 6:00Speaker 2: make a big difference. I think if your starter goes
- 6:02Speaker 2: deeper the way that the game is nowadays, when starters
- 6:05Speaker 2: do go four and two thirds, why is it four
- 6:07Speaker 2: and two thirds? I have no idea that they go
- 6:09Speaker 2: four and two thirds. Then they got to try to
- 6:10Speaker 2: make some match the rest of the game. Well, you
- 6:13Speaker 2: kind of need that bullpen, especially come playoff time, right,
- 6:16Speaker 2: So if you're burning them out, your toast. So hopefully
- 6:19Speaker 2: they can find somebody that's not going to cost them
- 6:23Speaker 2: too much money where they can go out and have
- 6:25Speaker 2: a bullpen to compete.
- 6:28Speaker 5: All right, My question, since I'm no longer available to
- 6:31Speaker 5: fill the needs of the Cincinnati Reds, give me the
- 6:34Speaker 5: dream scenario of that power bat that you're thinking of.
- 6:37Speaker 5: Give me who you think they end up with. Yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 5: because I think who they kind of dream of getting
- 6:42Speaker 5: and who they probably end up with are probably two
- 6:44Speaker 5: different people. And do you think they have a little
- 6:46Speaker 5: bit of hesitancy because the last two kind of big
- 6:49Speaker 5: deals they gave the power Bats didn't work out.
- 6:53Speaker 2: So I think my dream deal would Pete A. Lonzo
- 6:58Speaker 2: would be that guy that's not to happen. I think
- 7:01Speaker 2: that's everybody's dream. He would be perfect, a perfect fit
- 7:04Speaker 2: for that ballpark, but obviously just cannot afford to have him.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I do like Auhanio Suarez reunite. I know they were
- 7:13Speaker 2: talking about reuniting with him at the trade deadline last year,
- 7:16Speaker 2: but they couldn't get a deal done. I don't know
- 7:19Speaker 2: how much he's going to be worth it. They're saying
- 7:21Speaker 2: like possibly three years, sixty million. I don't know if
- 7:24Speaker 2: the Reds are going to want to do that for
- 7:25Speaker 2: a guy that's thirty five years old. Why not go
- 7:30Speaker 2: out on a Limb and get somebody like Paul Goldschmidt.
- 7:32Speaker 2: But you know, I know he didn't have a ton
- 7:34Speaker 2: of homers last year. He only hit ten, I believe.
- 7:37Speaker 2: But the guy can hit the ball out of the ballpark,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and his career numbers a great American are pretty good.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I think it's two eighty plus with twenty homers and
- 7:45Speaker 2: sixty something games, so he's familiar with the place. It's
- 7:49Speaker 2: a veteran guy who can just flat out hit still,
- 7:53Speaker 2: so I think there's options there. But again, you got
- 7:56Speaker 2: salth Stewart that's going to be plugged into the you
- 8:00Speaker 2: have at third base, keep Brian Hayes, who's going to
- 8:04Speaker 2: be plugged in. So where do you put that power bat?
- 8:06Speaker 2: I have no idea. Your guess is good as mine.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I don't think they ever listened to me Kevin anyway,
- 8:11Speaker 2: So but why don't they go out and try to
- 8:12Speaker 2: get Pete or Suarez?
- 8:15Speaker 3: All Right, Danny, I got a way that you can
- 8:17Speaker 3: cross off two pieces on your to do list. Anytime
- 8:19Speaker 3: I have a to do list, sometimes I write something
- 8:21Speaker 3: down that I just did and I cross it off
- 8:24Speaker 3: just to make me feel like I accomplished a lot.
- 8:27Speaker 3: So I'm going to give you your our bat and your
- 8:29Speaker 3: outpha one and it's not going to cost you what
- 8:33Speaker 3: free agent market costs. The outfield needs that guy, and
- 8:38Speaker 3: I think this team needs an alpha. Do the Reds
- 8:41Speaker 3: have enough to go and trade for Byron Buxton to
- 8:45Speaker 3: solidify that outfield because it's under market value? Or are
- 8:52Speaker 3: the Reds not built as an organization that you know
- 8:55Speaker 3: better than I do to do something like that.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Ooh, that man you just got. You gave me chills
- 9:02Speaker 2: when you said that. I don't know if you saw
- 9:04Speaker 2: my reaction. That's pretty intense. That would be pretty amazing.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I agree with you there. They do need an alpha
- 9:12Speaker 2: and Buxton, oh my gosh, he would fit perfectly. But
- 9:14Speaker 2: what would they have to give up? You know, I
- 9:17Speaker 2: heard you right before I came on and talks about
- 9:19Speaker 2: Hunter Green. I know that there were kind of talks
- 9:22Speaker 2: about that previously through the media. Will they do it
- 9:27Speaker 2: because he's under he's under market value right now, they're
- 9:30Speaker 2: getting him for pretty cheap. I don't know if they would,
- 9:32Speaker 2: but if it was a chance to get Byron Buxton,
- 9:36Speaker 2: maybe maybe they would.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I don't know. I like that though.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Maybe I'll send that to some of the upper people
- 9:42Speaker 2: see if they as an anonymous caller or something, see
- 9:45Speaker 2: if they can throw that out there.
- 9:47Speaker 3: I love that.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Get it done, and then you're getting credit for it.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Okay, I don't need credit for it. I'm fine. I
- 9:56Speaker 3: don't calling me.
- 10:03Speaker 1: You mentioned Hunter Green. We've talked about the Reds rotation
- 10:07Speaker 1: a little bit. It's one of the deepest in baseball.
- 10:09Speaker 1: But the Reds have said, you know that they have listened,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but don't have any intention of trading Hunter Green, who
- 10:18Speaker 1: has three years and forty two million left on his contract.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I guess what are you hearing from that front or
- 10:23Speaker 1: what do you happen?
- 10:25Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 10:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think honestly, it was just something that was
- 10:28Speaker 2: thrown out there to see if it would stick. And
- 10:31Speaker 2: I'm sure they're listening to anything, because at this point
- 10:35Speaker 2: there's really nobody on this team that you would say
- 10:39Speaker 2: is untouchable. If there's the right deal and the right
- 10:43Speaker 2: players offered for somebody, and it's a no brainer, I
- 10:47Speaker 2: think you take it. But I also think Trish, you've
- 10:50Speaker 2: been in this game long enough too, Like things get
- 10:52Speaker 2: thrown out there like randomly, and do they really mean anything.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Is there any like headway behind it?
- 11:00Speaker 1: No?
- 11:00Speaker 3: Probably not.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I don't think Nick Kral had any intention going into
- 11:04Speaker 2: this offseason talking about Hunter Green trades because of the
- 11:08Speaker 2: fact that he's making so little amount of money compared
- 11:11Speaker 2: to other number one starters. So I think it's just
- 11:15Speaker 2: something that was thrown out there, and they kind of
- 11:19Speaker 2: talked about it a little bit at the at the
- 11:21Speaker 2: GM meetings, and I think that's it unless the Twins say,
- 11:25Speaker 2: here's Byron Buxton and so and so for Hunter Green
- 11:29Speaker 2: and so and so.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So. Let's talk a little bit about the man in charge,
- 11:34Speaker 1: Tito Terry Francona, and just the confidence in him to
- 11:40Speaker 1: manage this team and give it the level of consistency
- 11:45Speaker 1: that they want and see those regular postseason berths if
- 11:49Speaker 1: they just add a few more pieces to that roster, Danny,
- 11:53Speaker 1: Is that kind of what we're feeling from the Reds
- 11:56Speaker 1: camp a little bit?
- 11:58Speaker 3: Yes, I do.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I don't feel like they're going to go out and
- 12:01Speaker 2: spend a ton of money, because when was the last
- 12:03Speaker 2: time they ever did. Probably never. So I think that
- 12:07Speaker 2: they're gonna go out and Tito's gonna try to convince
- 12:11Speaker 2: them what pieces they need to get over the hump.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Tito didn't come here just to help rebuild or just
- 12:19Speaker 2: to get to a one game playoff or a wild
- 12:21Speaker 2: card playoff. Tito came to Cincinnati to win. He came
- 12:25Speaker 2: out of retirement to win. So I think he's going
- 12:29Speaker 2: to have a lot of say in who they go
- 12:31Speaker 2: after and who they want to sign, and hopefully the
- 12:34Speaker 2: owners there and you know Nick Krawl decides, hey, this
- 12:38Speaker 2: is what we need. Let's give it a run and
- 12:40Speaker 2: see what we can do because the city of Cincinnati
- 12:43Speaker 2: is begging for a winner.
- 12:46Speaker 5: Yeah, to follow up on that, when they hired Tito
- 12:48Speaker 5: to come out of retirement to do this, well, obviously
- 12:52Speaker 5: it was to win. Was this a lot quicker than
- 12:54Speaker 5: they kind of saw it happening? You know? Would you
- 12:57Speaker 5: consider this year a success? Them getting the playoffs? They lost,
- 13:00Speaker 5: you know, in the first round of the Dodgers, but
- 13:02Speaker 5: which is a little bit quicker than most people kind
- 13:05Speaker 5: of anticipated Tito taking over and being able to lead
- 13:07Speaker 5: his team with the playoffs.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I see, anytime you have a Tito Francona running your team,
- 13:14Speaker 2: you automatically think he's going to get to the playoffs.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Was it a little bit quick?
- 13:18Speaker 2: I think if you look at the roster that the
- 13:21Speaker 2: Reds have had the last couple of years with David Bell,
- 13:23Speaker 2: They've had the pieces, but they just couldn't figure out
- 13:26Speaker 2: how to get over that hump. They couldn't figure out
- 13:29Speaker 2: how to just work through the dog days of September.
- 13:33Speaker 3: You know.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I think with Tito, he brings that little extra confidence
- 13:38Speaker 2: and that where guys feel like they're really playing better
- 13:42Speaker 2: than what they should. So I don't think they were surprised.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I don't necessarily think I was surprised because Tito. Whatever
- 13:49Speaker 2: Tito does is not a shock to me. The guy's
- 13:52Speaker 2: a winner.
- 13:53Speaker 3: All right. Last question, you watched this team the whole year.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Did the Reds make the play else or did the
- 14:01Speaker 3: Mets lose it?
- 14:05Speaker 2: B Yeah, so yeah, I think the Mets kind of
- 14:13Speaker 2: like gave it away. They were so good for most
- 14:18Speaker 2: of the year and then they just buckled under the pressure.
- 14:22Speaker 3: The Reds.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I think if you watched them a lot, you saw
- 14:26Speaker 2: that they were at times really good and then at
- 14:29Speaker 2: times they were like, oh my gosh, this team's terrible,
- 14:31Speaker 2: and then again, oh my gosh, they're really good, and
- 14:33Speaker 2: then wait, what is this team's identity? So I think
- 14:38Speaker 2: they were trying to get steady towards the end. Of
- 14:40Speaker 2: the year, and they played well the last couple of weeks,
- 14:42Speaker 2: obviously to put that pressure on the Mets. But I do,
- 14:46Speaker 2: at the end of the day think that the Mets
- 14:48Speaker 2: kind of choked.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I would have to agree with that take, Danny. I
- 14:54Speaker 1: think that, Thank you, thank.
- 14:57Speaker 3: You, I was hoping for somebody to agree.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Thanks to I very much agree with that take.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And I got a soft spot for the Reds in
- 15:04Speaker 1: my heart because I grew up in southern Indiana, so
- 15:06Speaker 1: I grew up watching them. But I agree with that take.
- 15:09Speaker 1: The Mets lost that chance, all right, Danny. Thank you
- 15:12Speaker 1: so much, and don't forget to catch Riverfront Territory with
- 15:15Speaker 1: Danny on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.
