- 1:42how are you just fine, thank you, Johnny Mitter Turner has me
- 1:46to get in touch with you and find out what you're working on at the
- 1:48moment. Why nothing? I was thinking of going to New York for a
- 1:51couple of days. Were good. Would you be interested in having a case
- 1:53for us while you're there? Oh, Pauline, I'm going to New York
- 1:56on a vacation. Well, they shouldn't take too much time. And Jhnny,
- 2:00it's really one of my most important accounts. Wow, how much commission
- 2:02can I figure on? The practically? Nuts? All? Fine? Why
- 2:08does Turner foist these things on me? Oh? I guess it's my fault.
- 2:12I totally m I thought you might do it as a favor to it,
- 2:14were mister Turner? Continental adjustment? Pure? Oh no for you?
- 2:17Okay? What is it? Well? Wait? Better still? Why don't
- 2:21you tell me about it over dinner? Say it the Crystal Room. Oh,
- 2:23I'd love it. I've been wanting to go there for months, you
- 2:27know something, I've been waiting for an excuse to take you there for years.
- 2:30Eight o'clock falling, eight o'clock night and every weekday night. Bob Bailey
- 2:43and The Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action packed expensive God America's fabulous
- 2:46freelance insurance investigator Australey Johnny Dollar expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Doller to
- 3:04the Continental Adjustment Bureau for eighteen Elizabeth Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut. The following
- 3:07is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Forbes matter. It started
- 3:13quite pleasantly, Johnny, let's go back to the table and eat. I'm
- 3:23tired of Dan. Yeah, but once you sit down, you'll start talking
- 3:27business again. Well, of course I will. I do have a job
- 3:30to keep Okay, okay, frustrating girl. Besides, the sooner you clear
- 3:35up this case, the longer you have for a vacation in New York,
- 3:38I said, okay, yes, thank you. All right, miss Morrice.
- 3:44Let's have the bad news. Well, the insurance company is Delaware Eastern
- 3:46Liability in New York. Copy, Yes, ma'am. Their client who filed
- 3:51the complaint is a large dress manufacturing company, Oh, Century Styles Incorporated.
- 3:55Yes, ma'am. Oh, and if you can manage to pick up one
- 3:58of their latest creations in my size while you're there, I love you forever,
- 4:01yes, ma'am. Now let's stand no, no, wait, the
- 4:04auditors found a deficit in their books four thousand, two hundred and eighty five
- 4:08dollars. Well, naturally the head of the company wants a settlement. Yes,
- 4:11ma'am. Now, and Johnny, your biggest problem will be mister Elliott,
- 4:15mister Robert Elliott, who I understand it's something of a personality problem.
- 4:18It can't be any more of a problem. And I'm having with you now.
- 4:23That's this expensive count adem two twenty eight dollars and sixty three cents trained
- 4:30fair and incidentals. Getting from Hartford in Manhattan with me, I took all
- 4:33the necessary information concerning the indemnity claim of Century Styles with Delaware Eastern Liability and
- 4:39Trust. I arrived at Grand Central at two o five and was checked in
- 4:43at the New Western by two thirty air brisk Guyeclaire Weather call expensive count Atom
- 4:48three ten cents phone call to Robert p. Elliott, Century Styles Incorporated.
- 4:53The ster Elliot City would be happy to see me. So I went right
- 4:55over and found a four story building that housed two floors of factory and two
- 4:59floors of offices. The factory was the usual crowded, noisy collection of machinery
- 5:02and people. The general office is overstuffed and overheated and overcrowded. Girls,
- 5:08girls, you'll must get ready, Come on girls, the sam Hill,
- 5:15Jenny, you'll just have to reduce. How can we fit you when the
- 5:18pins keep popping out? Pardon me, I'm looking for mister Elliott. You
- 5:21are true, I'm Robert Elliott. Oh you must be, mister Dollars right.
- 5:27Stand by, Jenny, sweet. We all suffer for our our child.
- 5:30Now bear up, I'll delive you soon. This way, mister Dollar,
- 5:33to a quiet corner. Mister Elliott was small and wary, wearing white
- 5:43warachis, green swanks, a corduroy jacket, and a flower print shirt of
- 5:46no identifiable color. As I followed them across the large and I like can
- 5:50showroom floor that I couldn't help steaming glances at the merchandise animate and inanimates.
- 5:57Everything I saw was strictly high class a group of goddesses. Mister Eliot led
- 6:01me through a pair of swinging doors into an office with a carpet so thick
- 6:04I couldn't see my shoetops. A desk in Russian gray sprawled in one corner
- 6:10my office, mister Dollar, I can't tell you how grateful I am that
- 6:13you're here, that the insurance company heated my call. I hope we can
- 6:15help you straighten this manner up. Well, it's scandalous. It's truly scandalous.
- 6:19Five thousand dollars. Really, the complaints said four thousand, two hundred
- 6:24and eighty five. Mister Elliot, Well that's almost five thousand. Besides,
- 6:28I like to deal in round figures. Brett non be to my auditors and
- 6:31they said that you are the very important investigator in insurance circle. I'm flatted.
- 6:35Did they happen to leave a copy of their findings? Yes they did,
- 6:39They most certainly did. But before I give it to you, I
- 6:41must explain how awful this situation is. Please do well, you've no doubt
- 6:45how to Patricia's things. No, I don't think Patsy's things wife. Oh,
- 6:51you're just joking. I am Patsy's things. In fact, I made
- 6:55pats these things. It's our highest price line, you know, eatning dresses.
- 6:58Oh you don't say. I definitely to do. Oh the nights of
- 7:00thankless work. They're go into creating just one gown, one supreme gown for
- 7:04the season. I'm sure I'll tell you, mister Dollar. It's well,
- 7:08it's a thankless to ask. In one respect. That's a different story.
- 7:12What I'm trying to say is that this lass is devastating me. I mean
- 7:15it. I must, I simply must have an adjustment immediately. While the
- 7:17insurance company sympathizes with you, mister Elliott will try to adjudicate it as quickly
- 7:21as possible. No, that's company, that's very company, Rob Elliott.
- 7:28Here, in my opinion, hats are just not important this year. Yeah
- 7:35no no, no, no, no no no positively no, no advanced
- 7:39layouts on the new line. Not until later, no, not tomorrow.
- 7:44No, I can't. I simply cannot anything wrong. But that's what I
- 7:48mean. That's what I'm trying to explain. This matter simply must be handled
- 7:51with all dispatch, mister Dollar. You see, my firm operates on a
- 7:56string. Spider's hair would be more at five thousand dollars, mister Dollar,
- 8:03that comparatively small loss is stopping me from showing my new line of packing dress.
- 8:07Yes, yes, I must show them before months, Andra, I
- 8:09lose my entire opportunity for profit. So you see, I must have compensation
- 8:13for the laws I think I get the picture, mister Elliot, are there?
- 8:16That was the newspaper calling, And it's terrible. They all want advanced
- 8:20viewings of my new line, and I simply can't afford to. I can't
- 8:22afford to pay my help to produce the models, mister Dollar. For three
- 8:26agonizing months, I worked frantically. I drew, I cut, I stitched,
- 8:30and not one warp over for my creation will be exhibited can be exhibited
- 8:33unless this matter is settled. And suppose we get down to business. Well,
- 8:37a business is that some ruthless brigg and pussy put it off of my
- 8:39company's money. Well, do you have any idea? I don't. I
- 8:41don't have, no, no, no, not so much as a footprinter's
- 8:43rand of hair. And mister Dollar, if you don't find out who it
- 8:46was and return my money, I'll be cremated, professionally cremated. That is
- 8:52why I might even have to join the foreign legion. Well, don't worry,
- 8:54mister Elliot. If your laws is verified, then apparently a reputable auditing
- 8:58firm has already done that. I'm going to are you that the insurance company
- 9:01will reimburse that loss. And the time it takes to get a checkmate out
- 9:03and in the mail. Oh good, I'll be forever grateful. Well,
- 9:05when you're in this mood, would you mind me having a little closer rundown
- 9:09on what happened? Well, the audit to simply uncovered the shortage. That's
- 9:13all I know that much, mister Elliott. May I see their report?
- 9:16Yes, of course, yeah. Isn't that bind her? An atrocious frame
- 9:22at off? You say so, I'd like to keep this, mister Elliott,
- 9:24to verify my report. Of course, mister Dallo, any anything at
- 9:28all just saved me. I love mister Elliott. In a fainting condition,
- 9:35went back to my hotel and studied the auditor's report. The obvious conclusion after
- 9:41an hour's reading was that the funds had been embezzled by someone in the bookkeeping
- 9:43department. A series of cruder ratios and bad fumblings indicated that whoever done it
- 9:48had been something less than expert. In fact, he or she had been
- 9:50almost idiotic. The next morning, I confirm my own findings with mister Brett
- 9:54at the auditor's office. We uncovered the lass two days ago and advised mister
- 9:58Elliott contact his insurance company first, Sure dull are any reservations on your part.
- 10:03No, no, Elliot's cattle legitimate loss here. I'm sending in my
- 10:07report today. He should be compensated, and another the two days and he'll
- 10:11be relieved. I know about that. I know I met him. Well,
- 10:15what's your next step? Oh, we'll pay off Elliots. So I
- 10:18want to have heart fail here, but of course we'll try to make recovery.
- 10:20I noticed the losses were in book series F six through G ten.
- 10:24Yes that you talked to personnel over there at his place. Fellow by name
- 10:28of Forbes handled that series for them any accounting office, of course. Oh
- 10:31yeah, it's been with Sensory Styles for five years. Where is he now?
- 10:33We're still there. I thought it was kind of funny too. I
- 10:39fell at pulling a crude job like this and not trying to run out.
- 10:41No, he's still working for them. Maybe he isn't the one at that
- 10:46Forbes was in charge of those books. I don't see how it could possibly
- 10:50be anyone else on either to Why mister Brad, may I use your phone?
- 10:54Oh? Sure, help yourself. I notice all the money was stolen
- 11:00in the last four weeks. Yes, you think he'd at least have strung
- 11:03it out greedy. I guess, yeah, I guess. Hello, District
- 11:07Attorney's office. Please, my name's Dollar. I want to talk to someone
- 11:11about a warrant embezzling funds, grand theft. I'll hold it. Please Forbes.
- 11:16What's his full name? Sheldon Thomas Forbanks. Sheldon Thomas Forbes, bookkeeper
- 11:22at Century Styles Incorporated. M good, I'm on my way expense account item
- 11:31four three dollars camp fare to the offices of John L. Gregory, Deputy
- 11:35District Attorney. I explained the situation of mister greg reinfurnished him with the auditors
- 11:39report. An hour later, I was back at Century Styles with our friend
- 11:43mister Elliott. Well, if it has to be, it has to be
- 11:48there he is, Forbes, there did Sheldon Thomas Forbes was a tall,
- 11:56dark complexioned man in his early thirties. His hair was black, straight and
- 12:00sleep cropped. His speech is regular, not good, not bad. The
- 12:03kind of man you see every day on the street. Somehow, the kind
- 12:07of man I hadn't expected. What swipe five thousand dollars? Oh, mister
- 12:09Forbes, Yes, this gentleman would like to see you. I feel like
- 12:15brutus honage. You're un along, mister Elliot, I'll handle it from here,
- 12:18thank you. Hello Sheldon Forbes. Yes, my name's Dollar Continental Adjustment
- 12:26Bureau. We represent Delaware Mutual Liability. They cover this firm for losses by
- 12:31theft and fire. Uh huh. Two days ago, the auditing firm of
- 12:33Bread and Iron Beach located a loss of almost five thousand dollars here. Naturally
- 12:37the matter came to our attention. I'd like to talk to you about it.
- 12:41Why me? There's every indication that the loss has occurred in the particular
- 12:46accounts you've been handling. Huh you do handle books F six through G ten?
- 12:50Yes? What do you step away here a minute? Please? Sure?
- 13:00Would you look at this? Your figures? Yes, your handwritting?
- 13:07Oh, your entries and your initials? Yes? Well what do you have
- 13:16to say? Nothing? Look, you know why I'm talking to you.
- 13:22Why I came to you first? Yes, still nothing to say? Nothing?
- 13:30We aren't you being a little silly? Why I stole the money?
- 13:35You've proved? What am I supposed to say? You would admit it?
- 13:39How can I deny it? Oh? James, We've got that much covery?
- 13:43Now? Well, look, my company is interested in recovery of four
- 13:46thousand, two hundred and eighty five dollars. Do you understand I think so
- 13:52on our Forbes count of your senses. What do you want to do?
- 13:54Go to jail? Or do you want to give the money back? Oh
- 14:00that's funny. Well no, I don't think it's funny. I doubt if
- 14:01you will. I've got sixteen cents in my pocket. Well that hell,
- 14:05where's the money? I haven't got it, mister Della. You have to
- 14:09take me to jail. Shall we go? Okay? Johnny Dollar? Raw
- 14:33Elliot here, mister Dollar century style. I know, mister Elliott. How
- 14:37are you today? Terrible? Mister Dollar, I feel terrible. I'm calling
- 14:41from the District Attorney's office. You're there about Sheldon Forbes. Yes, I
- 14:45had no idea I'd have to act. They want me to sign a complaint.
- 14:48Well that's pretty usual, mister Elliott. Forbes admitted taking the money from
- 14:50your firm. He's Gilly is charged. You're the injured party. They want
- 14:54to get on with the prosecution. Oh, so you do whatever, they
- 14:56say, mister Elliott. Well, will it affect my payment of a payment
- 15:00of the claim? No, not a bit. Your checks on the radio
- 15:01right now. Oh that's a relief. How about you? Are you going
- 15:05back to Hartford? Should I thank you? Now? You can thank me,
- 15:07But I'm not going back. My job is just beginning. I have
- 15:11to recover the money for the insurance company tonight and every weekday night. Bob
- 15:24Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account,
- 15:28America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator. It's truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by
- 15:43special Investigator Johnny Dollar the Continental Adjustment Bureau for eighteen Elizabeth Avenue, Hartford,
- 15:48Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Forbes
- 15:52met at theft of nearly five thousand dollars expenses continued Item four. I think
- 16:00it is ten dollars deposited on a Reddit car. First stop Cecral Division headquarters,
- 16:04where I was informed that Sheldon Thomas Forbes had been formerly a reign and
- 16:07was being held in the city jail. Second stop, an address on fifty
- 16:15sixth Street, second floor, next to a dental laboratory, and on the
- 16:18door it said Edward Gumby, Attorney at law, and below it said walk
- 16:22in so I did hello out there, mister Gumby, Yes, sir,
- 16:29come on in. It's warmer in here. Edward Gumby was standing in front
- 16:33of a gas heater in the inner office, which consisted of nothing more than
- 16:36a telephone, a desk, and a dozen law books. He was a
- 16:38medium sized man, about forty or so, little tired, little CD bunny
- 16:44had a nice grin dollar dollar. Yeah, that's right, mister Gumby.
- 16:48You don't know me. I'm with Continental Adjustment Bureau, representing Delaware Eastern Liability
- 16:52in this Forbes matter. Oh yes, yes, yes, of course I
- 16:56understand you're representing Sheldon Forbes. Is that right? Well, I don't know
- 17:00whether it is or not, mister Dollar. I happened to be in magistrate's
- 17:03court this morning when Forbes was arraigned. I took him on because he didn't
- 17:07have counsel, and the court appointed me. I don't know whether he took
- 17:11me on or not. Thanks. New York is the coldest city in the
- 17:18world, absolutely the coldest when it's cold. Sure, Look, I don't
- 17:22want to take up a lot of your time, mister Gumby. Time I've
- 17:26got time, boy, That's all I've got what's on your mind? Your
- 17:30client? Mostly he's admitted guilt, but of course we're interested in recovering the
- 17:33money he stole. Four thousand, two hundred and eighty five dollars. Yeah,
- 17:37I can't blame your company for that. Well, prosecution could probably be
- 17:41stopped if we made recovery. Sure. I thought i'd tell you this in
- 17:47case you had any influence on Forbes. Well. I appreciate that, mister
- 17:51Dollars, very understandable, But as I say, I was court appointed.
- 17:55I really haven't talked to him yet, so I'll have to confess I don't
- 17:57have any influence with him all yet. Struck me as a nice sort of
- 18:03chat. Don't quite get it myself. Probably an explanation for it. Married
- 18:07once, I understand, widowed right after the war. He worked for Century
- 18:12Styles about five years. Have you talked the police yet, No, I
- 18:18understand they're going to work on it today. Maybe they'll have a little more
- 18:22information for you about the recovery. Yeah. Probably find the money in an
- 18:26old soccer or something like that. That's the way these things generally run,
- 18:30you know. I agreed with mister company. That was truly the way these
- 18:37kind of cases usually ran. And I was a little surprised that afternoon when
- 18:41I spoke to the officers at the city jail, they reported that a complete
- 18:44search of Forbes apartment and automobile on earth nothing like the missing money. They
- 18:48further reported that they had found no reliable evidence of any material possessions that the
- 18:52money could have been spent for my next stop, city jail. He won't
- 19:03tell you anything after tramp shut all the time he's been in here, so
- 19:08as we've been able to find out, no previous record, no background and
- 19:12checking his prince with washing him. I don't know about this one. You
- 19:18know, ex cop wise, you know what I mean. Don't give a
- 19:22police officer at the time of day. That means he could have been in
- 19:26before. On the other hand, it could mean he's just scared meant too.
- 19:37Oh, how they're it easy for us? This is mister dollar.
- 19:41He wants to talk to color for us. Hie you later, okay,
- 19:47thanks, certain r. They're treating you okay, swow what do you want
- 19:56I want to talk to you? Well, I don't want to talk to
- 19:59you. I don't want to talk to anybody. Why. I just don't
- 20:03want to see anybody. That's all now you're acting like a baby. Forbes.
- 20:07You don't have to talk to somebody. Don't lecture me, mister insurance
- 20:10investigator. I've had all the lectures I want for myself. I don't know
- 20:17why you're here. I thought we settled our business yesterday. The whole thing's
- 20:21just technicality. I've been arraigned that at my confession, I'll go into a
- 20:25court and they'll give me the business. But what are you doing in here
- 20:30anyway? Swell day to be outside? Yeah it is. I want to
- 20:34smoke. Oh thanks? Oh why are you here to help you out of
- 20:45this mess? If you'll let me? It's funny, not a bit.
- 20:49Why should you want to help me? Well, it's not because I have
- 20:52any use for you. Mister. You're nothing to me but a guy who
- 20:56stole a pile of money. My job is to get it back. Four
- 20:59thousand, two hundred eighty five dollars. Oh yes, that how about it?
- 21:04Forbes, isn't it enough that I'm in jail, that I'll go to
- 21:08prison. That's enough for the police, but not for my insurance company.
- 21:11Oh, it's too bad about your insurance company. Oh it's too bad about
- 21:15you. You're being foolish. A whole or partial recovery can have a great
- 21:19deal to do with what happens to you from now on. Three years is
- 21:22the minimum sentence, you know, twelve years maximum? I was it worth
- 21:26it? Sure, sure, it's worth it, And I don't want to
- 21:30be foolish anymore. But I have been foolish. I took it nice bedt
- 21:34every dime of it. There's no way to pay it back. What did
- 21:37you spend it on? Doesn't make any difference. They make a lot of
- 21:41difference. You can redeem it, turn it back. I can't. Why
- 21:45did you take the money? All right? Look, your salary is close
- 21:48to one hundred a week. You're single. Wasn't that enough to live on?
- 21:52Why don't you get out of here? I don't have anything to tell
- 21:56You've ever been in trouble before under an the name in another state? They
- 22:00consider backgrounds like that when a man comes up to be sentenced forbes. This
- 22:06is your first offense. I know. Are you trying to shield someone?
- 22:08Why don't you go away? Even trying the market? Did you gamble?
- 22:12No? No, just leave me alone. I won't tell you a thing
- 22:18if you've bought something with it or gave it to someone if it can be
- 22:19recovered in some parts. Oh no, go away and leave me along.
- 22:26I'd like to believe me. I would. You're a thief, Forbes,
- 22:29and you're gonna get what's coming to you. But I can't leave you along.
- 22:30Let's tell you listen to me. If I don't get the information I
- 22:33want from you, I'll get it elsewhere. I'm gonna be very honest with
- 22:37you. Eastern Delaware wrote a comprehensive policy on Century styles, promising to idemnify
- 22:42them and full for every laws caused my fire theft on their premises. In
- 22:47case you didn't know, Forbes, an insurance company won't take the war to
- 22:49some guy sitting in a jail cell, sitting in a jail cell, feeling
- 22:52sorry for himself. Where there's cash to be recovered, you swiped it within
- 22:56the last month. You have something to show, or it's somewhere somehow.
- 23:00Whatever you spend it on, or whoever you spend it on, remember that
- 23:03that money is the same as stolen property, a car or a diamond ring
- 23:07or something. If you give it to someone or spend it when it wasn't
- 23:11yours, it's still redeemable and we mean to redeem it right now, what
- 23:15do you have to say? This won't do you any good. Don't try
- 23:21to bulldoze me. I'm no punk or crawling into a drug store when no
- 23:25late at night. I'm a college graduate. I've been in the business world
- 23:29ten years or better. I know what I want to tell you and what
- 23:32I want to keep to myself. And I don't want to talk to you
- 23:34about this, you or anybody else. I can't make it any clearer than
- 23:41that. Do you understand? And there's no way an old person who can
- 23:44make me talk about it. I took the lousy money. I've admitted that
- 23:49I did a bad job of it. You caught me. I confessed,
- 23:52and you've got me. Now what more is there? That's the whole story.
- 24:02Okay, have it your way, Forbes go just go on my way
- 24:19out. I saw his attorney, Edward Gumby, on his way to see
- 24:22Forbes. I waited around the sergeant's disk Accidentally, on purpose, I glanced
- 24:26at the admitted visitors register. Only two people had contacted Forbes since his arrest,
- 24:32Gumby and myself. That struck me as odd. I glanced at his
- 24:37folder named no Close relatives name no one. In fact, I was thinking
- 24:41about that when Gumby came out from his visit camby looking worn up. Hi
- 24:48to do not so good? Hey, tell me something. He asked you
- 24:52to contact a girl or anyone. Nope, I don't think he has a
- 24:56girl. I don't think he has anybody. I want some cost Yeah,
- 25:00good idea. We slushed across the street and found a diner expensive count item
- 25:04five forty two cents coffee and sinkers for red Gumby and myself. I think
- 25:11you're gonna strike out. I already have, and I think I have to.
- 25:18You know what I've been talking to him about in there all this time,
- 25:21the same thing as you restitutions. But he won't open his mouth about
- 25:25it. He did say one thing, though, He wants me to wave
- 25:29a jury trial and go up for sentencing. What yeah, plead guilly and
- 25:33take it. He's sure to get at least three years. What's can I
- 25:41do? Any ideas well? I've got a lot of ideas dollar and all
- 25:45of them make me sick inside. That boy's not a criminal. He took
- 25:51that money because he was desperate about something. You know that from the awkward
- 25:53way he took it. He spent it on something, and he won't talk
- 25:57about it. But now he's about to ruin his whole life. In spite
- 26:02of what you or I or anybody else tries to do for him. All
- 26:04he has to do is give back the money or promised restitution, or call
- 26:08up a friend and borrow it. With his clean background, the court had
- 26:12listened to a mercy PLEA you told him all this. I told him,
- 26:17I told him, and you told him. And what does he do?
- 26:19He waves his right. I tell you, I'm gonna hate to file this
- 26:26waiver, but I've got to do him. Yeah, now I feel more
- 26:30coffee, you know, ohing Dollar. You know what Forbes is what he's
- 26:40something I call a calendar job. Calendar John thirty three years or not.
- 26:45And I'll think about that. Born with one war, just ended raised in
- 26:51a depression, and then bangal another war. You might say, the first
- 26:56twenty five years of his life nothing but war depression. Are the effects thereof
- 27:03a calendar job. Apparently it's what he wants. But mister Dollar, I'm
- 27:12gonna hate to see him go to prison. You know something, mister Gumby
