- 0:28[SPEAKER_01]: and it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: Each week my guests will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.

- 0:59[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so grateful that you are spending some time listening to this podcast.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: I do not take it lightly.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: I am obsessed with what we're creating.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: I cannot believe how deep into the 600 episodes we are.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: It is mind boggling to me to be completely honest.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna kick this off with something inspired me.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: This is insanity.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: This is gonna blow your mind and like, create things to talk about during your day.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: If you're like, oh my god, I don't talk to this person, you should talk about this.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so for 56 years, the British Army's top surgeon had a secret so explosive.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: They buried the records for a century to hide it.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: Even Florence Nightingale never faked it out.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret Ann Buckley was born in 1809, Ireland.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: At 15, she watched her father, Rot and Deaders prison while her uncle, a famous artist refused to help.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: Historians think she was raped, God pregnant, had to hide the baby as her sister.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: But Margaret didn't break.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: She did something so insane, so brilliant that 200 years later were still shook by the audacity of it all.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: She killed Margaret Buckley, became James Barry.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: Bounder Chess, deep into voice, and walked into the Edinburgh, Edinburgh, medical school, like she owned the place.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: The other students thought he was a prepubescent boy.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: Two young, two smooth face, the university tried blocking the degree.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: But Barry had allies.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: In 1812, Dr. James Barry graduates moved to London because of an army surgeon, the transformation was complete.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: Margaret was dead, James was unstoppable.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: Posted to Cape Town buried in just treat white colonists, he fought for enslaved people, prisoners, lepers, mate enemies, everywhere.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: His temper was legendary.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: Once got into a pistol duel, shot the peak off the other guy's hat, message delivered, don't laugh with Dr. Barry.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: Then came the moment that should have exposed everything.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: A woman with a complicated pregnancy needed a c-section.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: Know your pin had done one in Africa and kept both the mother and the child alive.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: Barry doesn't hesitate.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: Cut her open, pull out the baby stitched her up both survive.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: They named the child James Barry in honor.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: For 46 years, Barry rose to the ranks.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: Became Inspector General.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the most beautiful.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like, just look at that.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: Ugh.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: like Angelic became Inspector General second highest medical position in the British Army reformed hospitals everywhere.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: Florence Nightingale called her or the most hardened creature I've ever met.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: She had no idea she was beefing with a woman fighting tooth and nail trying to survive.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: Barry had rules.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody enters while I'm undressing.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: If I die, bury me in my sheets, no examination, no preparation just bury me fast.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: But on July 25th, 1865, Barry dies of dysentery.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: The chairwoman preparing the body makes a discovery that rocks the British Empire to its core.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: Not just female anatomy, stretch marks, signs of childbirth, the second highest medical officer in the British Army had been a woman all along.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: The Army went into damage control, sealed the records for 100 years, tried to make a disappear, but the truth was already spreading.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: The woman who couldn't get in the universe because of her sex had just been 56 years as British Army's most decorated doctor.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: She performed surgeries, men couldn't reform health care systems save thousands all while one discovery away from losing everything.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: They tried to bury her as Margaret, but she'd already buried that girl in 1809.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: She died as she lived as Dr. James buried on her own terms.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone who's been told that's not for girls, this is your ancestor.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: So whether we want to call them Dr. Barry or Mark, like she I think Dr. Barry, this person's a badass on the A-Saint and just goes to show us all that like things can happen and they can change you and you can still change the world.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: You can still take all of that and go and change the world.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: And it's hard.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure it was so difficult for this person.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: No wonder they were angry.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: No wonder people fighting like I can't even imagine
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: but also like, wow, way to pave ways and way to make discoveries and save lives and not just fight for one side, but also for the lives of other people.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: We can do a lot of things.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: So just proof that when women are in communities, we support the whole community.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of amazing.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: All right, you're win for today that you've sent in.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: So you can send in your wins to be a pod.com slash question, you can send a question, you can send a win.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: but this is from Olsenegai.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: She's been with us for so long and I love that she still sends her wins into us.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I realized today that every client I taught has done Pilai's for years.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: Two little yoga students for Matt some have moved closer to me so switched a couple worked with me at a previous studio I worked at.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: And now here with me.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Also several of them have taken time off.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: applies like keep coming back and it's so cool.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's so cool.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's so awesome.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: Also that you're celebrating that they've been doing it for years.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just with you that like they've just been doing it for years and like it used to be and we all started teaching Melissa.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure the same way it's like Like most people didn't even know it was was and now we have people have been doing pies for years and years and years and yes people are still discovering it but like it's possible to have all these people just have like a lot of history doing Pilates.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_01]: You also sent in, had some of the team from the health and wellness unlimited out to my home studio space for a bit of conversation how they can help make referrals plus a mini workout.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: This is the clinic I share space with my second studio.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I just absolutely love that you are spreading the good word and inviting people in to see how we can collaborate more.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: Y'all like Pilates or whatever it is that you do.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't always Pilates people are listening.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever it is that you do, it's better in collaboration.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: Everything is.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and it's hard to do because like, oh my god, why would they work with me?
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: Or I don't know.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want them to think I'm still no one is I don't I you're not if you're listening to podcasts or probably not an asshole and you're unlikely to still anybody's anything but like we can help people my kind of practice sense of members.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: We send my people to my chiropractor like it's just how it makes the world go around and isn't that great people want good referrals.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I love that you're shining from the rooftops like how what you do can support with they do and I think I love that this is a win Melissa because we can all learn from that.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like how can I work with someone over there who does something different than me but with people who are the same as who I work with, how we work together more.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: That's what makes things a community.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's a make people feel less alone.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: I always was like, okay, don't nail that.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: You know, my win is I was reflecting a bit about last year.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: I take a little while because like, to me, I'm on tour for the end of the new year.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: Happened.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: So I took some time and on my vacation, I thought about like, oh, I wanted to read 25 books in 2025.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: Like, did I do that?
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: I did, I read more and I actually realized like, because I started reading again, like how fast I read again and like, I read things all over the place, like all over different subjects and genres and I really enjoy that and I also count audible books as reading a book.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: So because I listen audible books and read physical books and I love reading physical books, which is not always an option, especially when I'm on tour, that like,
- 8:01[SPEAKER_01]: I could probably read even more.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, definitely 26 and 26, but, you know, it really, it felt really kind of daunting when I was like, oh, I'm going to read 25 books.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: How many I read 25 books, especially when the first you just took a little longer than I thought.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: But the reality is that you just get started, just get started, and so I hope that helps you if that is a goal of yours to read more.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: And that's my win for this week.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: See how simple the win can be?
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: I read some books.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it did.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm so like, it's just, it's actually quite nice to read a book.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I grow towards my interests, like a plant reaching for the sun.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: I grow towards my interests, like a plant reaching for the sun.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: I grow towards my interests, like a plant reaching for the sun.
