- 0:11Podcast. I'm your host Miles, and today I thought I would help you
- 0:14out with your technique by giving you five sweet pipking tips. And of course
- 0:19you know this is my opinion. These are the sweet picking tips that have
- 0:22really helped me. And this lesson is accompanied by a lesson on my website
- 0:28guitarjet dot com slash sweep dash picking dash tips, or you can just go
- 0:31to guitar dot dot com and type in sweet picking tips in the search bar
- 0:36and it's accompanied by notation tabs. And I'll have a YouTube video up for
- 0:40this soon. So let's go ahead and dive into the five tips. So
- 0:45tip number one is to start with two string sweeps. And this just means
- 0:51that you know, like a lot of guitar players will start with like a
- 0:54five string sweep, but I think it's important to start with a two string
- 0:57sweep so you can get familiar with simple motion such as like for example,
- 1:00if you're going B to E and use a single downstroke, you're gonna do
- 1:04a downstroke on B any that's gonna be one single motion, and then on
- 1:08that high E you're just gonna do a simple upstroke, So you go down,
- 1:11down, up and play a simple arpeggio like a G major R peggio,
- 1:17which you can find in the tablature all right. And tip number two
- 1:22is to practice sweeping in a single direction. So for example, you could
- 1:26take a major or minor a peggio and I like to do this on the
- 1:30GB and Highe strings, and you just sweep in a single direction so you
- 1:36can get down that single motion direction. This is very similar to a strumming
- 1:42motion, so you go down, down, down that it's all one motion.
- 1:46And just remember that these notes all need to be played individually, which
- 1:49means these notes will not ring together in harmony. And tip number three is
- 1:56to learn three string sweeps in what I call the right way, which is
- 2:00playing down, down, down, up, pull off on. So if
- 2:04you're on the GB and high E strings, you go down down, down
- 2:07on GB and high E and up pull off on the east ring and up
- 2:10on the B and that way. After you've done that last upstroke, after
- 2:15you've done all six motions, your pick is positioned again on that G string
- 2:19to go down, so down down, down up, pull off up.
- 2:23And what's really cool is you can say those motions to yourself even when you
- 2:28don't have your guitar with you. Just remember the six motions down down,
- 2:31down, up, pull off up, And kind of related sweet picking tip
- 2:38here, it's like a bonus tip, is to watch your picking hand,
- 2:43because when you're sweeping, you know, sweet picking technique is a picking technique,
- 2:47so make sure you're looking at your picking hand and not just watching your
- 2:52fret hand. So tip number four is to play tryad arpeggios across octaves.
- 2:58So if you don't know, a tryad is a three note chord, and
- 3:02when you break down a chord, you get in arpeggio. So a three
- 3:07note chord played across octaves is far more effective than playing a cage darpeggio or
- 3:13a single position arpeggio because oftentimes those single position are peggios are large and complicated
- 3:20and have a lot of barring involved. So what I recommend instead is just
- 3:23playing sweeps within a single octave, which take advantage of simple two strings.
- 3:30Sweet picking shapes and motions that I kind of refer to in tip one,
- 3:34so you'll just go down, down, up on eena, and then for
- 3:38the next octave you'll be on the DMNG strings, and for the octave after
- 3:40that, you'll be on the B and high E strings, and that's explained
- 3:46in a bit more depth in the article. And then last but not least,
- 3:53tip number five is to practice slowly, and so practice slowly so you
- 3:57can accurately memorize your sweetpicking mode and common sweet picking shapes. And also don't
- 4:01worry too much about muting when you're just getting started, and you see,
- 4:06you can't move on to playing and practicing fast sweeps if you haven't learned the
- 4:13motions and the shapes. So I guess overall, practice slowly and don't worry
- 4:18too much about muting. And that's it for my five sweet picking tips.
