- 0:00Hey, it's Sarah. So come on in and sit down and
- 0:05join me tonight. I am so glad that you're here.
- 0:08So I want to ask you something before we even get started.
- 0:12Is there a decision sitting on your chest right now?
- 0:15Something you've been turning over and over and going back and
- 0:18forth and second guessing yourself?
- 0:20Not sure if what you're feeling is your gut telling you the
- 0:23truth or your fear talking you out of something good.
- 0:28If something just came to mind, stay with it.
- 0:30Tonight is for you. So think of my voice as a little
- 0:36Lantern in the dark, just lighting up the next few steps
- 0:39in front of you. So on Tuesday we talked about
- 0:44fear based decisions, about how fear disguises itself as logic
- 0:48and practicality and I'm just being realistic and how it
- 0:52rushes us and it contracts us and it makes choices on our
- 0:57behalf before we even realize it's happened.
- 1:01But tonight I want to go one layer deeper.
- 1:03Just one. Because one of the most
- 1:06disorienting things about fear is that I can feel exactly like
- 1:11intuition. And it speaks with the same
- 1:15quiet certainty and it uses the first person and it says I just
- 1:20know. And so we listen to it and we
- 1:23follow it. And sometimes, not always, but
- 1:27sometimes we look back and realize we weren't following our
- 1:30gut at all. We were following our wounds.
- 1:33So how do you tell the difference?
- 1:36Well, here's what I've come to understand, and I've been on an
- 1:39intensive deep dive for many years to understand.
- 1:44And what I've watched unfold in the people that I work with over
- 1:48and over again and in myself over and over again, and in my
- 1:52interactions with people over and over again, is that
- 1:58intuition and fear, They feel different in the body, not in
- 2:02the mind. The mind can argue either case,
- 2:07and the mind is a brilliant lawyer and it will build you an
- 2:10airtight case for whatever it's already decided.
- 2:14But the body doesn't lie in the same way.
- 2:18So fear in your body, it feels contracted, it feels tight, it
- 2:24lives high up in the chest, in the throat, the shoulders and it
- 2:29has an urgency to it, like a franticness and it says decide
- 2:34now, move now, get out now, hold on now.
- 2:38It is always either running towards something or away from
- 2:41something. It is never still.
- 2:45It is always in a place of action, and underneath fear
- 2:51there is almost always a familiar feeling, an old feeling
- 2:561 you felt before, long before this situation existed.
- 3:01But intuition? That feels different.
- 3:05Intuition is quieter, it doesn't yell, it doesn't rush you.
- 3:10It lives lower in the body, in the belly, the gut, the chest in
- 3:14a different way, and it has a steadiness to it even when the
- 3:18message itself is uncomfortable. Intuition can tell you something
- 3:23hard. This isn't right, this needs to
- 3:26end, this isn't the path. And even as it delivers that
- 3:30difficult truth, there is a quality of settledness and
- 3:36softness underneath it, like something clicking into place
- 3:40rather than spinning out of control.
- 3:43I always say to people, your mind screams and your intuition
- 3:47whispers, and you may only notice it when it's quiet.
- 3:51And the simplest way I know how to tell them apart is exactly
- 3:55that. Fear gets louder the longer you
- 3:59sit with it, and intuition, it gets clearer.
- 4:04So I want to bring you into your body for just a moment right
- 4:07now. Whatever decision or situation
- 4:10came to mind at the beginning of this episode, just bring it
- 4:13back. Just let it be present and now
- 4:17without thinking, without analyzing.
- 4:19I know that's a tough ask. Put one hand on your belly just
- 4:23below your navel. Now take a slow breath in
- 4:28through your nose and let it travel all the way down to that
- 4:31hand, and then let it out slowly.
- 4:40Now just notice when you hold this situation in your awareness
- 4:44and breathe into your belly, what do you feel?
- 4:49Not what do you think, not what do you fear, but what do you
- 4:53feel in that place? Is there tightness or urgency or
- 4:58a kind of clawing sensation? Or is there something quiet or
- 5:04something that already knows, Something that maybe you are
- 5:08avoiding the answer to and you don't have to act on it tonight.
- 5:12You don't have to have the answer, but I want you to start
- 5:17practicing noticing that difference.
- 5:20Because the more you come back to your body, the more that you
- 5:23learn the language that it speaks, the harder it becomes
- 5:27for fear to pass itself off as truth.
- 5:31And the masks that we wear, they start to drop because you are so
- 5:36in tune with yourself, with your body, with your intuition, that
- 5:41you now can tell truth. Your intuition has always been
- 5:46there. It was there when you were
- 5:49small, before the world taught you to override it, and before
- 5:53you learned that your feelings were inconvenient or too much or
- 5:57wrong. And it's still there.
- 6:00It didn't go anywhere. It might be quieter, maybe a
- 6:04little bit buried under years of second guessing and performing
- 6:08and shrinking, but it is there, and it is trustworthy, and it is
- 6:13desperately vying for you to notice it and to listen to it.
- 6:20And in other episodes this week, I've talked about the lighthouse
- 6:24and that lighthouse. It doesn't follow the storm.
- 6:27It holds its position, and it shines from the place it knows
- 6:32is solid ground. That is your intuition, that
- 6:36steady, unmovable knowing beneath the noise.
- 6:42So learn to find it and come back to it and trust it, even
- 6:47when fear is screaming louder. And actually especially then,
- 6:52you are more knowing than you've been given credit for, more than
- 6:57you've given yourself credit for.
- 6:59And that's where you start tonight.
- 7:03So I'm going to leave the Lantern next to you for just a
- 7:05little bit tonight so that you know you're not alone.
- 7:09And hopefully that light shines your way just a little bit more
- 7:13tonight and I will be back in the morning for the next morning
- 7:18message. And then I'll be back to sit
- 7:20with you again Saturday night. I hope that you get some rest
- 7:24tonight. And when the quiet falls, just
- 7:29notice and try doing what I asked.
- 7:32Put your hand on your belly and breathe into it and just notice
- 7:37what your body is telling you to.
- 7:40Have a beautiful evening and I will be back.
