Latest / Unlocking The Paradigm Portal / The Accumulator: Why You Keep Getting Ready to Get Ready
Transcript
- 0:01Good morning everyone. Welcome back to unlocking the
- 0:04Paradigm portal. My name is Sarah and I'm so
- 0:06proud of myself. I'm just going to share this
- 0:08once again. It is 5:30 in the morning and I
- 0:11am up recording. Look at me go and I'm actually.
- 0:14Happy about it. Even though I said I didn't.
- 0:17Want to record the mornings? But I forgot about this until
- 0:20late last night. So grab your coffee.
- 0:22Grab your drink. Whatever it is and sit down with
- 0:25me. I am having some hot cocoa this
- 0:27morning because. It feels luxurious and
- 0:30wonderful, so I'm going to jump right in and.
- 0:35I want you to picture. This a gap.
- 0:37Opens in your schedule. And a meeting cancels.
- 0:41Or a project. Perhaps earlier.
- 0:43Than you expected. Or maybe a window appears that.
- 0:47Wasn't there this morning. Just a little window of time and
- 0:50within minutes. You found something to?
- 0:52Fill it, not scrolling or wasting time, but something
- 0:56useful like. Another course to.
- 0:58Add to the list a new tool to explore.
- 1:00A skill you've been meaning to develop.
- 1:02Or a framework? That just landed in your inbox.
- 1:04That seems incredibly relevant to the thing that you're working
- 1:08toward. Whatever The thing is for you
- 1:11and you are productive and you are.
- 1:13Driven. And you are?
- 1:13Always, always. Investing in yourself.
- 1:16And your growth? And somehow.
- 1:19Despite all that. Investment, the thing you've
- 1:21been building toward, keeps sitting.
- 1:22At the edge. Of the runway.
- 1:25You're almost ready. You're nearly there.
- 1:27Just one more. Piece and then you'll be fully.
- 1:29Prepared to actually. Launch.
- 1:32So if any. Part of that landed somewhere
- 1:34familiar. Then this episode, excuse me, is
- 1:37for you. This is the first time I'm
- 1:39talking. This morning so.
- 1:41My voice may go in and out and I want to.
- 1:43Say right up. Front, there's nothing wrong
- 1:46with you. Let me just make that very
- 1:48abundantly clear. This pattern makes complete
- 1:51sense, so we're going to look at it.
- 1:52Clearly today because. Seeing it is the only.
- 1:54Way through it. So on Monday we talked about the
- 1:58liminal. Space which is.
- 2:00The hallway between the old thing and the new thing, and
- 2:04then. The two archetypes that struggle
- 2:05to. Be there.
- 2:07So if you haven't heard that. Episode yet go.
- 2:08Back and start there. This one builds directly on it.
- 2:12So today. We're going very deep into the
- 2:15accumulator and the first thing I want to be clear about.
- 2:19Is who we're. Actually talking about because
- 2:21the accumulator might surprise you.
- 2:24So this is someone who. Follows through.
- 2:26It's someone with real discipline, genuine commitment
- 2:30and staying power that most people would envy.
- 2:33And the. Accumulator is often one of the.
- 2:35Most capable, driven and impressively engaged people in
- 2:39any room. Because they show.
- 2:41Up and they do the work and they take it seriously.
- 2:45They just keep. Taking on more.
- 2:47Before they. Ever have to find out what
- 2:49happens when they actually put the thing they've been building
- 2:52out into the world and the accumulator shows up in more
- 2:55than one body, more than one calendar, more than one kind of
- 2:59collecting? And as I sat with it and thought
- 3:03about the different ways that the accumulator appears and
- 3:06people that I've known and myself.
- 3:09There are. Actually, 3 versions of this
- 3:10pattern that I keep seeing consistently, and they look
- 3:14different on the surface, but underneath they're running the
- 3:16exact same loop. So the first one is the one I'm
- 3:20calling the achievement accumulator.
- 3:23So this is the one that most people picture when they hear
- 3:26that word. Another certification, another
- 3:29course, another mastermind, another tool or framework or
- 3:33strategy or methodology. Maybe another book as I'm
- 3:36staring at my giant shelf of every.
- 3:38Book under the sun. Maybe another mentor or another
- 3:42skill set that will finally make them ready.
- 3:46And every single one of those things is genuinely valuable.
- 3:49That's what makes this pattern so hard to see from inside of
- 3:52it. Because it looks like.
- 3:54Diligence, and it looks like someone who takes.
- 3:57Their growth? Seriously.
- 3:59And honestly? It looks like.
- 4:01Preparation. And it is preparation.
- 4:04It's just preparation that never quite becomes launch.
- 4:08So the. Achievement Accumulator is
- 4:09impressively credentialed and they follow through on what they
- 4:13take on. They are consistent and driven
- 4:16and willing to do hard things. They're just always.
- 4:19One thing away from being ready to actually.
- 4:21Show what? They've built.
- 4:23Now the second one is what I'm calling the knowledge
- 4:26accumulator. So this one is subtler and
- 4:29honestly, it's the one that I know very intimately.
- 4:33So the knowledge accumulator has done the reading, all of it.
- 4:37And they can talk about nervous system regulation, anxious
- 4:41attachment, avoid an attachment, the mother wound, the father
- 4:44wound, the way generational trauma lives in the body,
- 4:47somatic awareness, shadow work, the inner child, the critic, the
- 4:49protector, all the things. And they speak that language
- 4:53fluently. But fluency is not integration.
- 4:58And you can be completely conversant in a language you
- 5:01have never actually lived in. So the knowledge accumulator
- 5:05feels like they're doing the work, because consuming feels
- 5:08like doing. And it has the.
- 5:10Texture of growth. And it scratches the itch of
- 5:13wanting to be different without requiring the friction that
- 5:16actual change demands. And here's what nobody is
- 5:20telling you. If this is resonating for you,
- 5:23knowledge can become its own avoidance strategy.
- 5:27So the next podcast, the next book, the next modality, It's
- 5:30not always curiosity driving that.
- 5:33Sometimes it's relief. And it's a.
- 5:35Very, very clear. And specific kind of relief of
- 5:40not having to apply what you already know.
- 5:43And when I say clear, I don't mean consciously aware.
- 5:47But if you are able. To zoom out and actually look at
- 5:50the pattern, it becomes super. Clear.
- 5:53So I found journals and I referenced these I think on
- 5:57Sunday and, you know, my own handwriting and.
- 6:01With the exact. Morning practice that I knew I
- 6:05needed written out in full, and I mean literally verbatim.
- 6:09What I had. Just finished putting together
- 6:11the other day and that was in October 2024 like.
- 6:16Step by step. In order, and I wasn't doing any
- 6:18of it. So I had the knowledge, I had
- 6:21the map, but the gap between writing it down and actually
- 6:24living it, that gap is the liminal space.
- 6:27The knowledge accumulator is working.
- 6:28Very hard to. Avoid.
- 6:30They don't need more information, they need to close
- 6:34the distance between what they know and what they do.
- 6:37And that distance is terrifying, to be totally honest, because
- 6:40once you're living it instead of studying it, you can't hide
- 6:44behind not knowing yet. So the. 3rd 1 is what I'm
- 6:49calling the busyness accumulator, not business busy
- 6:54dash Ness, and this one doesn't look like accumulation at all.
- 6:59Which is why. Exactly.
- 7:01It works so. Well, so the busyness
- 7:04accumulator isn't stacking credentials or consuming content
- 7:07necessarily. They may also be doing that.
- 7:10And side note, you could be. All three.
- 7:12God knows I have been So this one, they're stacking tasks,
- 7:17they're in motion, they're doing the calendar that.
- 7:20Fills itself back up the. Second, something clears the
- 7:24inbox that gets answered at midnight because it's the only
- 7:26time they have a loan and they spend half of it on their phone
- 7:29anyway. Or the project that gets added
- 7:32before the last. 1 is finished, or maybe the yes that comes out
- 7:36before they've. Even checked.
- 7:37Whether they wanted to say it or had the time to say it.
- 7:41So it's not. What they're accumulated?
- 7:43Accumulating. Excuse me, that gives them away.
- 7:47It's the fact. That there is never ever.
- 7:50A gap. And if you point it out, if you
- 7:53suggest slowing down, creating space, just stopping for a
- 7:56minute, that busyness accumulator will tell you with
- 8:00complete sincerity and genuinely believing that they can't.
- 8:05That this is just their life. That they're a parent or a
- 8:08provider or someone who has actual responsibilities and
- 8:12slowing down is a luxury they don't have and they.
- 8:15Really, truly believe it. And some of.
- 8:19That is true. And underneath all of it,
- 8:22something the busyness is making sure that they never have to
- 8:25sit. With.
- 8:27So the busyness accumulator says, oh, must be nice when
- 8:30someone talks about rest. And it's not typically with
- 8:33admiration, though it may come across that way.
- 8:36It's with something that feels a lot more like maybe a.
- 8:39Dash of jealousy. Because somewhere underneath the
- 8:42relentless forward motion, they know they could stop.
- 8:45They're choosing not to. The thing they're accumulating
- 8:48is noise, and the noise is doing exactly what it's.
- 8:52Supposed to do. So.
- 8:55All of this ties. To the shiny toy syndrome
- 8:58concept, if you haven't. Heard of that?
- 9:01Google it. I'm curious where anyone finds
- 9:04that they have the shiny toy syndrome going on.
- 9:08And I again, I went more into that Sunday and Monday.
- 9:12So on Monday I introduced the idea of shiny toy syndrome.
- 9:16This is not something I came up with.
- 9:18This is already an existing thing, and that is the pattern
- 9:21of being pulled toward the new thing or the next thing or the
- 9:24thing that just landed in your feed that feels like the missing
- 9:26piece. So the accumulator and the shiny
- 9:29toy are very deeply connected now.
- 9:32It's almost the same impulse wearing a different outfit.
- 9:36So to speak because. Here's what the shiny toy offers
- 9:40Novelty, possibility. The feeling of movement, the
- 9:44dopamine hit of of acquiring something new that could be the
- 9:48thing that finally unlocks the next level.
- 9:51And all three versions of the accumulator are exquisitely
- 9:55attuned to that feeling, just in different currencies.
- 9:59So for the. Achievement accumulator.
- 10:01The shiny thing is the credential, the course, the new
- 10:03framework. For the knowledge accumulator,
- 10:06it's the next book, the next modality, the next teacher who
- 10:09finally explains it in a way that clicks.
- 10:12And for the busyness accumulator, it's the next
- 10:14commitment, the next yes, the next thing that makes the
- 10:17calendar feel full and the motion.
- 10:20Feel justified? None of this is consciously
- 10:24happening. Like it's not in your awareness
- 10:27necessarily, or it might be. And if it is, notice that
- 10:32because that's a place that you may be able to recognize and
- 10:35like, tap on it, pull on the threads.
- 10:37And see where. You're avoiding, and that's the
- 10:39part that's super critical to understand if it's not in your
- 10:42conscious mind. It's a lot harder to see it so.
- 10:46If you're still with me, just zoom out on who you are and how
- 10:50you show up in the world and just observe because the
- 10:54accumulator is not sitting there thinking they're not like I'm
- 10:58going to acquire one more thing so I don't have to launch.
- 11:01That thought doesn't exist. What exists is genuine
- 11:04excitement about the new thing, genuine belief that this one is
- 11:09the missing piece, and genuine investment in the growth, in the
- 11:13doing. And the avoidance is so.
- 11:16Well disguised. Even from themselves that it
- 11:18doesn't register as avoidance at all.
- 11:21It registers as being. Serious about their work or
- 11:24their life. Or their healing, or their
- 11:26family. And it registers.
- 11:28As exactly the right. Thing to do This is why you're
- 11:32not fully unconscious awareness of it until you suddenly can see
- 11:36it. So also on Monday we talked.
- 11:38About two hallways. So there was.
- 11:41The dark Matter. Hallway both.
- 11:42If you remember. Apple TVTV shows.
- 11:46The dark matter hallway, it's lined with doors.
- 11:49Each one's a possibility, and each one is a version of what
- 11:52comes next. And a space that responds to
- 11:56your internal state. And it's a space where when
- 12:00you're regulated. It feels like curiosity.
- 12:02And wonder, and the thrill of standing at the edge of
- 12:04something real. And the severance hallway.
- 12:08It's the same architecture, but experienced through a different
- 12:11nervous system that has learned that ambiguity is dangerous.
- 12:15Fluorescent lights controlled environment.
- 12:18Clinical. Every door is a.
- 12:20Potential threat rather than a potential yes.
- 12:23So the accumulator builds their own version of the Severance
- 12:26hallway, and they do it differently.
- 12:28Each of them does it differently.
- 12:31So the achievement accumulator walks into the hallway, sees the
- 12:34doors, and pulls out a notebook. The door needs more research.
- 12:37The door. Requires a skill set they.
- 12:39Haven't fully developed yet. The door at the end looks
- 12:42promising, but they should probably gather more information
- 12:44before they get too close and they turn the hallway into.
- 12:48A research project. So then the knowledge
- 12:51accumulator walks into that same hallway, and they start
- 12:54annotating. They know what each door
- 12:56represents. They've read.
- 12:58About it they've. Listened to episodes about it.
- 13:00They've journaled about it extensively.
- 13:02They have. A rich and nuanced and.
- 13:04Impressively articulate. Understanding of what's behind
- 13:07every door, they just haven't opened 1 yet.
- 13:11And then the busyness accumulator doesn't even see the
- 13:13hallway. They're honestly moving too
- 13:15fast. They've been in motion since.
- 13:18Before they got there. And they will still be in motion
- 13:21when they leave. The doors blur past.
- 13:23With this one, the between gets managed by making sure they
- 13:26never have to stop and feel it. So it's.
- 13:29Three different strategies with the same outcome and the hallway
- 13:33which was always meant to. Be a threshold.
- 13:36Or a passage or. A place of active.
- 13:38Becoming becomes a. Place to live?
- 13:42And it becomes a place to live out of something much quieter
- 13:46than fear. It's something that lives just
- 13:48underneath the logic of all of it.
- 13:52But. Because the hallway.
- 13:53However uncomfortable is known and what's behind the doors is
- 13:57not and a nervous system that learned early that the unknown
- 14:01is where bad things. And keep in mind, bad.
- 14:04I'm doing air quotes with my fingers.
- 14:06Bad isn't a. Wide.
- 14:08Variety of things. Whatever bad things are in your
- 14:12mind. Because it feels like.
- 14:14Bad things will happen in that hallway.
- 14:18Then you find every intelligent, reasonable, genuinely productive
- 14:22way to stay in the known for as long as possible.
- 14:26So. Sitting there thinking about
- 14:27where does this pattern come from and I was using myself as a
- 14:30reference and then just people that I know and here's what I
- 14:34came down to. It comes from somewhere real and
- 14:38it grew from something that made complete sense at the time.
- 14:41And in my opinion, it is the mark of a nervous system that
- 14:45learned how to protect itself. So for most accumulators in any
- 14:50of the three forms, the pattern has roots in one or more.
- 14:53Of a few. Very recognizable places, so I'm
- 14:57curious. Let me know if any of these
- 14:58resonate for you family expectations.
- 15:02That tied love or approval to. Achievement or environments
- 15:06where your worth was demonstrated.
- 15:07Through what you produced. Or what you earned.
- 15:10Or what? You could show.
- 15:12Or maybe. It was cultural or.
- 15:14Societal messaging, and there is so much of it that equates
- 15:19busyness with value and stillness.
- 15:22With failure or. Laziness or selfishness.
- 15:26So core wounds around not being enough that got answered at some
- 15:29point. With a very.
- 15:31Reasonable conclusion that if you just learned more or did
- 15:34more or became more, that feeling of not enough would
- 15:37finally stop and it. Worked.
- 15:41That's the. Thing at some point that.
- 15:42Strategy worked, but also. At some point the strategy
- 15:46becomes outgrown. So acquiring more knowledge made
- 15:50you safer, and more skills made you more valuable, and more
- 15:54credentials gave you evidence that you could point to when the
- 15:57not enough voice that was rolling around in your head got
- 16:00loud. And staying busy meant you never
- 16:03had to sit in the quiet and hear what was underneath.
- 16:06So the accumulation was a genuinely intelligent response
- 16:10to a genuinely real set of conditions.
- 16:14The nervous system learned more is protection, preparation is
- 16:18safety, motion is proof, and the gap between where I am and where
- 16:23I need to be is dangerous and the way to close.
- 16:26That gap is to keep. Adding that learning doesn't
- 16:29just disappear when the conditions change, it runs
- 16:32automatically underneath all the conscious intention and the
- 16:36genuine ambition. It runs the accumulation loop
- 16:39without ever announcing itself. As a loop, so this is.
- 16:44Why? The accumulator doesn't feel
- 16:45like they're avoiding anything. They feel like they're doing
- 16:48everything right, and in so many ways, they are the growth.
- 16:52Is real. The skills are real, the drive
- 16:55is real, the care is. Real the only thing that isn't.
- 16:59Fully real yet is the belief that they already have.
- 17:02Everything they need. To take the step they keep.
- 17:05Preparing for. So what is?
- 17:08Actually on the other side. Of that door because if.
- 17:12Being in that hallway and or walking through a door is what's
- 17:15scary. What's there?
- 17:18So first, I'm not going to tell you to stop learning or stop
- 17:21growing. Like I'm not going to say, put
- 17:23down the courses and the frameworks and the tools or
- 17:26clear your calendar and sit in the silence until something
- 17:28magical happens. Though I do recommend that.
- 17:31Because that's where all of this.
- 17:33Stuff keeps coming up in me when I allow the silence to come in
- 17:37and slow down a little bit, like taking the light in the dark
- 17:40episodes out of my schedule, the silence and that stillness
- 17:45becomes. Like a deep sigh.
- 17:48And the. Coolest stuff starts.
- 17:50Coming up and out of my head in that quiet, but doing all of
- 17:54that and making all those changes, That's not the point of
- 17:56this. The point is to.
- 17:58Get curious. I want you to get.
- 18:00Curious about what's? Driving the accumulation because
- 18:04there's a difference between acquiring something that is.
- 18:07That it. Because it genuinely.
- 18:08Serves what you're. Building and acquiring something
- 18:11because it gives you a reason to stay in the hallway a little
- 18:14longer and only you know which one it is in any given moment.
- 18:20I'm just curious now. If you've ever allowed yourself
- 18:23to. Stop and question that Which one
- 18:25is it? And the only way to tell them
- 18:28apart is to slow down enough to notice what's underneath.
- 18:31The pole. Toward that new thing, or the
- 18:33next thing, or the fuller calendar like.
- 18:36What is scary? About having a gap of time
- 18:39that's open in your schedule because I'm willing to bet if
- 18:42you get one, you probably. Feel flustered.
- 18:45Because it feels foreign. So is it genuine excitement?
- 18:50Is that? Frustration or not frustration,
- 18:52flustering, Genuine excitement? Or is it fear?
- 18:56Is it real alignment when you're acquiring new skills?
- 18:59Is it a? Skill that's actually missing
- 19:01from what you're building right now.
- 19:03Or is it relief of? From having something else to
- 19:07do. Before you.
- 19:09Have to find out what happens when you open the door.
- 19:13Just things to sit and ponder, you know, super early on a what
- 19:16day is it? Wednesday morning?
- 19:18Because I'm going to tell you. Here's what's actually on the
- 19:20other. Side of that.
- 19:21Door. It's just the next thing.
- 19:23It's the real thing, Something honest and imperfect and
- 19:27entirely yours. So the version of your.
- 19:31Work or your? Life or your healing?
- 19:33That gets. To exist in the world instead.
- 19:36Of the hallway. Is what is beyond that door and
- 19:39the thing about the Dark matter hallway, specifically the one we
- 19:42talked about on Monday? Is that it?
- 19:44Responds to your internal state, So what you bring into it.
- 19:48Is what steers. You so the accumulator who walks
- 19:52into that hallway already carrying proof of their.
- 19:55Worth. Already knowing that the door
- 19:57they opened doesn't define their value, they're going to land
- 20:01somewhere completely different than the one who's still trying
- 20:04to earn the right to open the door at all.
- 20:06You already. Have that right.
- 20:08You always did. You always have.
- 20:11The accumulation. The accumulation I am fumbling
- 20:14over. Words today the.
- 20:15Accumulation was never going to get you there, because it was
- 20:19never actually the thing standing between you and the
- 20:22door. So if you recognized yourself in
- 20:26this today. Good.
- 20:27Like genuinely good because. Clarity is how.
- 20:30You move and you can't navigate something you can't see and now
- 20:34you can see it. So in attachment work.
- 20:37We talk about. It's like you've been living in
- 20:39a house with the lights off and suddenly the lights flick on and
- 20:43they flick off and where before you didn't know the layout.
- 20:46Of the house. So you're stumbling around, or
- 20:48you're frozen in fear once those lights flick on.
- 20:51You can see where the couches are, where the walkways are,
- 20:54where the TV is, where. Everything is that you could
- 20:56bump into and because those lights flicked on even if they
- 21:00turned off, you now have the start of a map.
- 21:03So consider this week and this. Episode the start.
- 21:07Of your map. So whether you're the one
- 21:09stacking up the credentials, or the one who's reading every book
- 21:12and written it all down and still isn't living it, or the
- 21:16one who hasn't stopped moving in so long that like you've
- 21:19forgotten what that feels like, the accumulation made sense
- 21:23then. Back then, it served.
- 21:25You and it's also. At some point going to need to
- 21:29give way to the thing it's been preparing you for, Not when
- 21:33you're ready. Because you're already.
- 21:34Ready. That was a lot of words already.
- 21:37Ready. It's whether you're willing.
- 21:41Are you willing right now? So Friday we're.
- 21:44Going to go into the performer. That's the other archetype from
- 21:47Monday's hallway conversation. Different pattern, different
- 21:49presentations, same hallway, different door.
- 21:52They won't open. And if you know someone who's
- 21:54been in their own hallway for a long time, accumulating,
- 21:57preparing, almost. Ready or just?
- 22:00Never stopping. Send them this episode.
- 22:03Not as a nudge, just as a mirror.
- 22:05So I also. Want to?
- 22:08Say for today, be curious. Just look.
- 22:12At it, just notice one thing that you keep accumulating and
- 22:15ask yourself what's underneath that.
- 22:17And also just for today, go out into the world and practice
- 22:21being real and not being nice. OK and by the way, being real
- 22:26doesn't mean to the exclusion of nice.
- 22:27You can still be a good person but just try being real show.
- 22:31Up as yourself. See what happens.
- 22:33So I will be. Back on Friday for the next
- 22:36episode.
