- 0:00Speaker 1: And we know that there has been quite a bit
- 0:02Speaker 1: happening in Catherine in recent days. There's always quite a
- 0:05Speaker 1: bit happening in Catherine. Unfortunately, though, I've seen a couple
- 0:09Speaker 1: of pressure releases come through about a break and entry
- 0:11Speaker 1: and then, as I understand it, a fire. Now joining
- 0:14Speaker 1: me on the line is the COLPS member for Catherine,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Joe Hersey. Good morning Joe, Good.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Morning Katie, and good morning listeners, Joe.
- 0:23Speaker 1: A couple of incidents that i'd seen sort of come
- 0:26Speaker 1: through from police media throughout the week in Catherine. I
- 0:30Speaker 1: understand that it was a pretty bad breaking. Earlier in
- 0:33Speaker 1: the week.
- 0:35Speaker 2: There was Katie, if you're talking about the one at
- 0:37Speaker 2: Godden mar the conference center, Yeah, that was Yeah, it
- 0:41Speaker 2: was shocking.
- 0:43Speaker 3: There was so many rocks inside the building, although interestingly enough, Katie,
- 0:49Speaker 3: none of the artwork was damaged. Nothing was taken in
- 0:52Speaker 3: the shop that they knew of when I spoke to them,
- 0:55Speaker 3: And it was just willful damage to most winds broken,
- 1:00Speaker 3: you know, from the front door. The rocks were right
- 1:03Speaker 3: down the back of the gallery and just glass everywhere.
- 1:07Speaker 3: It was a mess for them to clean up.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Oh that is terrible. Have that, I mean, I don't
- 1:11Speaker 1: know whether they've managed to arrest anybody, but that would
- 1:14Speaker 1: be like a terrible situation then for them having to
- 1:17Speaker 1: clean everything up and being able to get operating again.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Correct. So I went to the Saint Joseph's graduation last night.
- 1:27Speaker 3: They were due to have that in Godden marm and
- 1:30Speaker 3: fortunately everyone rallied around and Keegan from Dragonfly Catering made
- 1:34Speaker 3: the school hall look amazing for the graduates and it
- 1:38Speaker 3: was a really beautiful night. But that caused a lot
- 1:41Speaker 3: of anks to the school that they couldn't have that there.
- 1:43Speaker 3: And of course tonight we have the annual Catherine Prize
- 1:48Speaker 3: and that's been postponed and not able to go ahead.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So you know, it could have been a whole lot worse.
- 1:55Speaker 3: But my understanding was potentially, you know, thousand dollars worth
- 2:01Speaker 3: of damage at least there are two youths alleged to
- 2:08Speaker 3: have done the break in, but I'm not sure where
- 2:13Speaker 3: that is as we speak, Katie, Yeah, not.
- 2:16Speaker 1: The only one. I know that police arrested a man
- 2:18Speaker 1: in relation to a structure fireing Catherine as well. This
- 2:22Speaker 1: was yesterday morning, so shortly before six am, police and
- 2:25Speaker 1: fire crews ended up called to a business on Catherine
- 2:28Speaker 1: Terrace after a fire and smoke was seen at the
- 2:30Speaker 1: front of that location. Fortunately that fire caught well unfortunately,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I should say, the fire caused significant damage to the
- 2:38Speaker 1: front of the business, but it was quickly extinguished by
- 2:41Speaker 1: fire crews and well, fortunately the business was empty at
- 2:45Speaker 1: the time and nobody was injured, correct, Katie.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And I've spoken to the.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Owners of the building complex and it was the quick
- 2:57Speaker 3: actions by the police and fire that did bring under control.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It could have been a whole lot worse. But again
- 3:03Speaker 3: there's a lot of damage broken windows done to that
- 3:07Speaker 3: building as well, and you know it's not acceptable. So
- 3:11Speaker 3: fortunately they have caught that person.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Well, Joe, I'm glad that they have still a lot
- 3:16Speaker 1: for you guys, you know, to deal with tho. And
- 3:18Speaker 1: I know that you know that an incident like that,
- 3:21Speaker 1: it will It hinders people from being able to go
- 3:24Speaker 1: to work, It hinders businesses from being able to operate,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and people are quite frankly fed up with it.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Absolutely, Katie. And also you know it's a cost to
- 3:34Speaker 3: the business, to the building owners, and then you know,
- 3:39Speaker 3: do they absorb that, do they pass that on through
- 3:42Speaker 3: a rent rise or you know, these are all things
- 3:44Speaker 3: when we're living in a time where it is extremely
- 3:48Speaker 3: expensive here in the territory cost of living, so these
- 3:52Speaker 3: are all added pressures to people.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That go about their day to day of their business.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So how are things going in Catherine at the moment?
- 4:00Speaker 1: I meant, you know, when you talk tourism and the
- 4:02Speaker 1: number of visitors around the place, there the tourism.
- 4:06Speaker 3: The visitors have certainly dropped off.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I was actually at a Tourism NTE function.
- 4:11Speaker 3: At the Information Center last night and tourism and tea
- 4:15Speaker 3: were down and that was great.
- 4:16Speaker 2: We've had a good year of a tourists through town.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Tonight we've actually got Tom Curtin's launch of his new
- 4:26Speaker 2: album and that's fantastic, so I look forward to going
- 4:29Speaker 2: to that. And also we've got the launch of.
- 4:32Speaker 3: The showcasing Katherine in the middle of the Big Rivers
- 4:36Speaker 3: region at the meeting place this evening as well.
- 4:40Speaker 2: But we've had a bit of rain that's been lovely
- 4:42Speaker 2: to cool things down. And just on a positive Katie,
- 4:46Speaker 2: I've seen the school two school assemblies this morning, Catherine's
- 4:50Speaker 2: South Primary School and Clyde Penton Primary School and it
- 4:54Speaker 2: fills me with a lot of pride to see the
- 4:56Speaker 2: students getting their awards and we're in good hands in
- 5:01Speaker 2: the future with the caliber of students coming through in
- 5:04Speaker 2: the awards that they are getting and the respect and
- 5:07Speaker 2: resilience and achievements that they show. So that's a really positive.
- 5:12Speaker 1: That is that's awesome. And Joe, I'm pretty sure there's
- 5:15Speaker 1: a big Catherine Swimming carnival happening this weekend as well.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yes, yes, there's a lot going on. I'm actually in
- 5:22Speaker 2: Dahua this weekend, so I'm missing the carnival, but yeah,
- 5:25Speaker 2: they've got their big carnival with this weekend and today
- 5:29Speaker 2: is the Luke Kelly Cup as well, which I'll be
- 5:31Speaker 2: going to have a look at.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Shortly.
- 5:35Speaker 2: So there's a lot on in Catherine. There's always a
- 5:37Speaker 2: lot going on, and there's never you know, there's.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Never a dull moment with you wondering what you're going
- 5:43Speaker 3: to go and see or do.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Or around the community.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Well that is wonderful, Joe. It's always great to catch
- 5:52Speaker 1: up with you. Thanks so much for having a chat
- 5:54Speaker 1: with us this morning and letting us know what's going
- 5:55Speaker 1: on in Cather.
- 5:57Speaker 2: No worries, Katie, good to talk to you.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Thanks
