- 0:00Speaker 1: I was going through I'm trying to reorganize. I moved
- 0:03Speaker 1: all of my stuff at home from one area to
- 0:06Speaker 1: a new office space at home, and I'm trying to
- 0:09Speaker 1: reorganize things and go through all kinds of old letters
- 0:14Speaker 1: and things like that. And I found a pin that
- 0:18Speaker 1: we got in New Orleans at the House of Blues. Yeah,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and I gave it to Katie because I know she
- 0:24Speaker 1: likes pins. It's a it's kind of cool, let's just
- 0:27Speaker 1: have one of those. Yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure we
- 0:29Speaker 1: got it at the same time. But I was looking
- 0:31Speaker 1: through this and I found this, and I thought, what
- 0:33Speaker 1: the hell is this? It's my draft card.
- 0:36Speaker 2: This is my You're supposed to burn those.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Well, look a look at it.
- 0:40Speaker 1: How badly it's mutilated, and it's it's a card.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I got that.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So they issued this to me when I was seventeen,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I guess. And it didn't have a classification on it.
- 0:54Speaker 3: It just had a space for classification.
- 0:57Speaker 2: What does that mean classifying?
- 0:58Speaker 1: Well, you're either you know, you're I forget what all
- 1:01Speaker 1: of them were. But but the fit, you know, young
- 1:03Speaker 1: soldier to go fight fight in the war was one
- 1:06Speaker 1: A I believe, Yeah, because four f is Steve Rogers
- 1:10Speaker 1: before the serum, so it's blank.
- 1:13Speaker 3: It was blank because I hadn't.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Been through any of the the tests and and but
- 1:17Speaker 1: then I did. I went through all of the tests.
- 1:19Speaker 1: They took put us on a bus, Greyhound bus in Ogden,
- 1:22Speaker 1: took us down to Salt Lake, a whole bunch of
- 1:24Speaker 1: kids my age, and to the old hotel New House,
- 1:27Speaker 1: which doesn't exist anymore. And we went through this battery
- 1:31Speaker 1: of tests, mental acuity tests. There was one point where
- 1:36Speaker 1: it's in like in a big ballroom at the hotel,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and there are all these young men in their underpants
- 1:42Speaker 1: being examined by various doctors, and and what was.
- 1:45Speaker 2: The mood of you when you were there? Was everyone nervous?
- 1:49Speaker 2: Were you scared?
- 1:52Speaker 1: You know, it's a long time ago, and I don't.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I think I was sort of It was intrigue to me,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and I was kind of pissed off. I was kind
- 2:03Speaker 1: of angry about it. I didn't want to be doing it.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I didn't want to be there, and I was, and
- 2:07Speaker 1: I was worried about it. Sure, I was worried I
- 2:09Speaker 1: was going to get drafted and be sent to war
- 2:14Speaker 1: and uh uh, And I was not you know, it
- 2:17Speaker 1: just made me. I guess I was. I think I
- 2:20Speaker 1: was scared, probably, but at any rate. So then the
- 2:23Speaker 1: last thing they did was they they give you. They
- 2:26Speaker 1: had you talked to the army psychologists, the military psychologists,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and they talked to you about your mental state, and
- 2:33Speaker 1: da da da. And at the end I said, I
- 2:35Speaker 1: I have been seeing a psychiatrist, which was true in Ogden.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And he said he said, oh really, what why did
- 2:43Speaker 1: you do that? And I said, well, I was having
- 2:45Speaker 1: some trouble at home and so forth. And he said, well,
- 2:48Speaker 1: well you have your psychiatrist. Here's my card. Have your
- 2:51Speaker 1: psychiatrist send me a letter. And I said okay, and
- 2:55Speaker 1: that was that. And then I got I got this
- 2:58Speaker 1: new card in the mail and it said is on
- 3:00Speaker 1: it I'm classified for f which means men, women and
- 3:05Speaker 1: all men, women and children will go to war before me.
- 3:08Speaker 3: They just don't want me out. Are relieved, Yeah, oh yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 3: I'm defective.
- 3:15Speaker 1: But it says on the back on the inside of
- 3:16Speaker 1: this card, and I realize I've been breaking the law
- 3:19Speaker 1: this time. It says this, the law requires you to
- 3:23Speaker 1: have this card on your person at all times and
- 3:27Speaker 1: be able to surrender it upon demand.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Hmm. So I should have been carrying it all these years.
- 3:33Speaker 4: You could have been in violation of the law. Your papers, please,
- 3:37Speaker 4: I mean.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean this, and tell and tell you go.
- 3:41Speaker 1: You're called up to go fight, you have to have
- 3:43Speaker 1: this card on you and then you surrender it to
- 3:46Speaker 1: to to your whoever your you know, your arm your
- 3:50Speaker 1: commander or whatever.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Well.
- 3:51Speaker 4: The opposite of this is choosing to become part of
- 3:54Speaker 4: the military, which I opted out, which my son Fastus did,
- 3:58Speaker 4: And he sent me a couple of pictures recently. I know,
- 4:01Speaker 4: folks are always asking me how he's doing. Uh, And
- 4:04Speaker 4: he said, Mom, I got to tour a Japanese destroyer.
- 4:08Speaker 4: If you go to x ninety six dot com slash live. Uh,
- 4:11Speaker 4: he's in the very middle there. Maybe you can see
- 4:14Speaker 4: his mustache.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I don't know. That's all I can see. I can't
- 4:17Speaker 3: even see the destroyer.
- 4:21Speaker 4: But he's he's on an island in the middle of
- 4:23Speaker 4: the Indian Ocean. I don't know why there's a Japanese
- 4:25Speaker 4: destroyer there. I'm sure that's information.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I'm not pretty to see. This is an era in
- 4:30Speaker 3: the military. Being in the military. This is fun.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Back when I was gonna be in the military. This
- 4:36Speaker 1: was not gonna there was no fun involved.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Speaking of fun, he told me the other day that
- 4:41Speaker 4: he signed up to do uh something with their bunch
- 4:44Speaker 4: of marine biologists there studying baby sea turtles and they
- 4:50Speaker 4: needed some people to go out and help tag baby sea.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Turtles as they're born on the beach. Uh.
- 4:57Speaker 4: He sent me a video of that and send Katie
- 5:00Speaker 4: that for some other time we can talk about it.
- 5:03Speaker 1: So we have to go watch mama sea turtles give
- 5:06Speaker 1: birth well and tag the babies.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Put little put a.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Little so they can keep tracking they get they take
- 5:12Speaker 1: little ink pads and they do little little flipper prints.
- 5:16Speaker 4: This picture X nine six dot com slash slave. It's
- 5:19Speaker 4: a Japanese flag obviously, and you can see the festus
- 5:22Speaker 4: is extremely sunburned.
- 5:24Speaker 3: All I can see is the mustache.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And I said, number one, you're in the medical field.
- 5:34Speaker 4: You should know better and put sunscreen on. And he said, well,
- 5:38Speaker 4: when I went out to tag the baby turtles, I
- 5:40Speaker 4: had a big hat, which I thought was enough, but no,
- 5:43Speaker 4: So he's painfully summer in there. But when we have
- 5:47Speaker 4: time some other day, well, we can talk more about
- 5:50Speaker 4: the sea turtles again.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Again. Being in the military is fun, right, Now look.
- 5:55Speaker 2: How fun you still play with turtles.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Also tour Japanese destroyers and play with.
- 6:00Speaker 2: The turtles, not like when you were be on.
- 6:03Speaker 1: A beautiful island out in the middle of the ocean. Yeah,
- 6:07Speaker 1: it's just fun.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Believe me, I get nervous about you know, like my
- 6:11Speaker 4: and maybe you do with your kids too, Like Muhammad,
- 6:16Speaker 4: if if a draft comes back, they.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Won't have they won't have my kids. There's no way
- 6:22Speaker 1: they won't take them.
- 6:25Speaker 4: You know, Festus wants to do it, so I'm glad
- 6:27Speaker 4: he's there. But yeah, for people that don't want to
- 6:29Speaker 4: do it.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You know, it's uh, it's a it's a job, like
- 6:36Speaker 1: the way it's approached now. And I think that's and
- 6:39Speaker 1: I think that's good. So this has gone to the
- 6:42Speaker 1: all civilian army. Back back when I was the draft,
- 6:45Speaker 1: they were just you know, pulling you off the street.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And you had to do it whether you want to
- 6:50Speaker 2: do or not.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and now the people in the military, which is
- 6:53Speaker 1: much better. Really, there are people who.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Want to be there.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Sure you chose it, they choose to be there. They
- 6:59Speaker 1: want to be there, and uh, I am yeah, I
- 7:04Speaker 1: mean I think that just makes for a much better.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Can you can you imagine if you had gone. I
- 7:09Speaker 4: can't picture you doing that. I mean, if you had to,
- 7:14Speaker 4: you had to, but I don't. I have a hard
- 7:16Speaker 4: time envisioning you in that situation.
- 7:20Speaker 3: You know.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Part so I'll tell you that what I felt about
- 7:23Speaker 1: it at the time too. Part of the reason I
- 7:25Speaker 1: didn't want to go is because I thought I will
- 7:27Speaker 1: be too good at it, because I'm because I will
- 7:30Speaker 1: follow orders.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I can. I know how to do that.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And I and made me nervous that I would, I
- 7:38Speaker 1: would be too too good at what what I was
- 7:41Speaker 1: going to be asked to do.
- 7:42Speaker 3: I wouldn't. Yeah, And I just and I and I didn't.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And I was.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Morally opposed to what was going on at the time.
- 7:50Speaker 1: There was that yeah and uh. And at the same time,
- 7:54Speaker 1: I was also morally opposed to people who treated veterans
- 7:58Speaker 1: poorly at that time, which they did.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Uh.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You know, people coming back kids my age coming back
- 8:06Speaker 1: to the States and they got treated like crap, And
- 8:08Speaker 1: that was that was not right either.
- 8:10Speaker 5: It's like Daddy Gary, who's your same age, he did
- 8:14Speaker 5: get drafted and uh slunker and he well no, and
- 8:19Speaker 5: he he was in for a bit, but then he
- 8:20Speaker 5: became a conscientious objector.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Which is, oh, yeah, that's really hard to do.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's and and he got it.
- 8:28Speaker 3: It's hard. Yeah. They're pretty strict about that.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Which means you can go in and go yeah I don't.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I can't.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I don't think I ought to be doing this. Yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 3: all right,
