- 0:04Thank you. Oh, it really is a tremendous
- 0:09joy to be with you this morning. I just want to start by saying a
- 0:15deep thank you to Doctor Mark Job for the opportunity to open
- 0:19God's Word with you. And the last time I was here at
- 0:22Moody on the premises was two years ago for a student
- 0:26leadership event. And I was really blessed by
- 0:29that. And one of the reasons why I was
- 0:32blessed by that was because we had the chance to explore a
- 0:35topic together, discussion, one that changed my life, one that
- 0:40may not be popular today, but is very popular in the scriptures.
- 0:44The fear of the Lord, the fear of the Lord.
- 0:48And my time is limited today. So I, I want to get straight
- 0:51into it and follow up on that message, on the fear of the
- 0:55Lord, a Part 2 if you will. And there needs to be no need to
- 0:58worry if you weren't there. This is a standalone message.
- 1:01It will apply just as much. Specifically, I want to speak to
- 1:05you about some of the blessings that flow from this fountain
- 1:09called the fear of the Lord. In Isaiah 11 verse three, we are
- 1:16told of the Messiah, the perfect servant of Yahweh, who would
- 1:20delight in the fear of the Lord. Later in that same book, in
- 1:26Isaiah 33 verse six, we are told that the fear of the Lord is
- 1:30Zion's treasure. I'm not sure how many people
- 1:35today would equate the light and treasure with the fear of the
- 1:38Lord, but the Bible does. The Bible does.
- 1:42And again, I wish I had the time with you today to unpack what
- 1:47the fear of the Lord is and how it is totally relevant to the
- 1:52New Covenant. And though we can't exhaustively
- 1:56look into that, just in case there may be hesitations
- 2:01initially, just by even hearing that phrase, the fear of the
- 2:05Lord, I want to make just a couple of brief comments that
- 2:09will hopefully bring down any walls to this glorious truth
- 2:15that has been made available to us in the New Covenant.
- 2:19Often times we hear that and we think it's just a Old Testament
- 2:22concept, but here are two things that I want to just make mention
- 2:26before we touch on just some of these gems, these rubies, these
- 2:30pieces of gold and silver for the soul that comes from this
- 2:33treasure chest known as the fear of the Lord #1 The Bible
- 2:39emphatically declares that the fear of God is an essential
- 2:44component to the New Covenant. In Jeremiah 3240, the prophet
- 2:50declares of an everlasting covenant to come, one that God
- 2:55would honor. And he says in that verse that
- 2:57he will not turn away from doing good to those in that covenant.
- 3:00And then he follows it up with this.
- 3:02After saying that there is coming an everlasting covenant.
- 3:07I will put the fear of me in their hearts that they may not
- 3:15turn from me. And that is why when you visit
- 3:19the New Testament and you read faithfully through those books,
- 3:24you'll see this, this idea of the fear of the Lord sprinkled
- 3:27throughout. And so Peter says in first Peter
- 3:31117 And for those who call on God as Father, that's the basis
- 3:37of what he's about to say. For those who call on, we call
- 3:39on God as Father. In Christ.
- 3:42We've been adopted in Christ, we've been redeemed in Christ,
- 3:47we have right standing before God.
- 3:49We've been justified by faith. And Peter says for those who
- 3:53call on God as Father, who does not judge impartially but will
- 3:57judge according to each one's deeds.
- 4:00He goes on to say, conduct yourselves in fear for the rest
- 4:06of your exile. And then you come to the end of
- 4:11the book, You come to the conclusion of this glorious
- 4:14divine library, and you read something interesting at a
- 4:18critical juncture of the Tribulation period.
- 4:19In Revelation chapter 14, we were told that there will be an
- 4:23Angel in verse 6, an Angel who will proclaim the eternal
- 4:29gospel. And John was very specific.
- 4:33He didn't just say gospel. He wants to be no confusion.
- 4:36The eternal gospel, the gospel that has been foreordained, that
- 4:41has been foreknown from eternity past, the gospel that has been
- 4:44prophesied by a roster of faithful prophets under the Old
- 4:49Covenant. The gospel that has been
- 4:52preached by the apostles, the foundation, their doctrine, be
- 4:55the foundation of the church. The gospel that I pray saved
- 4:58your soul, the one that you relish in and you can sing
- 5:02about, the one that you have tasted, and through tasting
- 5:07you've seen that the Lord is good.
- 5:09That gospel, the eternal gospel, at some point will be proclaimed
- 5:15by this heavenly creature to all nations, all tribes.
- 5:20And then in verse 7 of Revelation 14, we're told of the
- 5:22first words that will come out of the mouth of this Angel,
- 5:25being prepared and knowing that it will be the eternal gospel.
- 5:28And he says this fear God and give him glory.
- 5:36Fear God, fear God. How is that related to this
- 5:42gospel of grace? Well, evidently they're
- 5:45harmonious. Evidently they don't cancel each
- 5:49other out. Evidently there is something
- 5:53that the Lord deposits in the heart of the redeemed soul that
- 5:58causes it to fear God. Here's my second point.
- 6:05Although it is impossible to deny the presence and the
- 6:09evidence and the relevance of the fear of the Lord, yes, even
- 6:13in the new Covenant, it is very possible to miss define it.
- 6:21And I wish we can again spend time discussing what the fear of
- 6:24God is not. And I wish we can spend the next
- 6:28hour or two to collect all the verses, as many verses as
- 6:33possible, to get the clearest picture of what the Holy Spirit
- 6:36means in His Word when He calls us to fear God.
- 6:41But I just want to present to you one verse, just one verse
- 6:45that I believe provides a general grasp of what it means
- 6:49to fear the Lord. And I invite you, if you have a
- 6:51copy of God's Word in your hand, to meet me in Psalm 33 and verse
- 6:568. Psalm 33, verse 8, Let all the
- 7:13earth fear the Lord. Let all the inhabitants of the
- 7:20world stand in awe of Him. Here we have Hebrew parallelism
- 7:26at work. And in Hebrew poetry, especially
- 7:31when it's synonymous parallelism, the author is not
- 7:35interested like we might be in the English speaking world with
- 7:38rhyming words. He's interested in rhyming
- 7:42thoughts. And how that works here is that
- 7:48you want to say something in two different ways.
- 7:53Meaning in the first line here we have a statement declared,
- 7:57let all the earth fear the Lord. And how this works is that the
- 8:02second line will essentially say the same thing with slight
- 8:05variations. And the purpose of that and, and
- 8:10the fruit of that is that the second line often will bring
- 8:13greater clarity to the first statement or it will bring a
- 8:17fuller picture to the teaching that is being conveyed in that
- 8:22breath or in that Psalm. And so with that rule in mind,
- 8:26what we see here is in verse 8, the fear of the Lord in great
- 8:31part is equated with standing in awe of him.
- 8:37Let all the earth fear the Lord. And here's the mirroring
- 8:43statement. Let all the inhabitants of the
- 8:46world stand in awe of him. Awe is a complex emotion.
- 8:56And I argue that it's an appropriate word to try to
- 9:01understand this fear, because this fear is complex in itself.
- 9:07It's a combination of convictions.
- 9:10It is a mingling of feelings. It includes wonder.
- 9:17It includes this high honor and holy reverence.
- 9:22It includes this continual awareness of the majesty of God
- 9:28and all His splendor and all His excellencies that would even in
- 9:34a healthy way, bring a redeemed creature to tremble.
- 9:42It even includes this intense devotion to God, one that would
- 9:48stimulate the shunning of absolutely anything that would
- 9:53grieve the very one that we esteem so highly, the fear of
- 10:00the Lord. And when we understand those
- 10:05characteristics of this fear, and when you study in depth what
- 10:09this fear entails, then verses like Psalm 130, verse 4 make a
- 10:16little bit more sense. Where you read with you there is
- 10:23forgiveness that you may be feared.
- 10:29Hold on for a second. Oh my God, Mount Sinai, I get
- 10:33it. Lightning, smoke, rumbling law.
- 10:40I get it. Tremble, awe, forgiveness.
- 10:47But with you there is forgiveness.
- 10:50Why? That you may be feared.
- 10:54Yeah. You can stand in awe at the
- 10:56grace of God. The grace of God should cause
- 11:00you to fear God. See.
- 11:02How does that work? Well, when I consider the
- 11:04holiness of God, the brilliance of God, the purity of God, and
- 11:08then I take my eyes and plant them on Calvary, and I see the
- 11:11love of God, the justice and mercy of God, kissing the wisdom
- 11:17of God, as Paul called it, should I not tremble?
- 11:20Oh, should I not tremble when I come to the table with those
- 11:24elements and I realized what that bread and what that cup
- 11:28signify, the great price of redemption?
- 11:31Should I not invoke in me a fear?
- 11:34What a mighty God, what a glorious God, what a powerful
- 11:39God, what a price that has been paid for my soul.
- 11:42With you there is forgiveness that you may be feared.
- 11:47In case what I presented to you as an introduction did not
- 11:51satisfy potential confusion or hesitation to grasp this, if you
- 11:58would take from this place a spark, if there's a spark in
- 12:01your belly, I encourage you to journey into this and begin at a
- 12:05critical place that will help you clarify this further.
- 12:09Take this as a nugget, Exodus 20, verse 20, where Moses as a
- 12:15mediator in the Old covenant faces the people of Israel who
- 12:18have just experienced this manifestation of the glory of
- 12:21God. And he calls this people to not
- 12:26fear. Check it out for yourself.
- 12:28I don't have time to look into it, but check it out for
- 12:29yourself in Exodus 2020 where he tells the Israelites, do not
- 12:34fear. OK, that's good.
- 12:37Do not fear, for the Lord has come to test you to see if the
- 12:40fear of Him is in you. Oh wait, you just told me not to
- 12:43fear, and now you're telling me to fear?
- 12:46Oh, which one isn't? Well, obviously there are two
- 12:49types of fear. God is interested in one, and he
- 12:51wants you to reject the other. This fear doesn't cause you to
- 12:57cower. This fear doesn't cause you to
- 13:00be a slave, to shrink from Him. Moses declares that this fear
- 13:07compels you, it keeps you close. And may I say this fear causes
- 13:13you to be afraid to be away from Him.
- 13:19Don't fear. God has come to test you, to see
- 13:23if the fear of Him is in you. So there is a fear, there is a
- 13:26love, a perfect love that casts out fear, and then there is a
- 13:30love that strengthens another one, fear of God.
- 13:36What are some of the blessings of fearing God?
- 13:39My time is running short. I want to give you 3.
- 13:43Don't tempt me by saying that I want to give you 3.
- 13:48Oh there are so many, I want to just give you 3.
- 13:54Life altering because this is more than just an emotion that
- 13:58might come to you in a spontaneous moment of worship or
- 14:02revelation. This fear of God is meant to be
- 14:04embedded. It's meant to be a frame of
- 14:07mind. It's meant to control you and
- 14:11guide you until you finally see the one that you have feared
- 14:15along your pilgrimage. Where is the first time the
- 14:20expression fear of God is mentioned in the Bible?
- 14:23I'm not talking about an example of it.
- 14:25I'm not talking about an illustration of it.
- 14:26I'm talking about the first time this expression fear of God is
- 14:31mentioned in Holy Scripture. You might be surprised where it
- 14:35is. Turn your Bibles with me to
- 14:36Exodus or excuse me, Genesis chapter 20 and verse 11.
- 14:42Abraham is in a land called Garrar, and Abraham upon the
- 14:47scene is very fearful. He he observes something that
- 14:52causes him to lie about his wife.
- 14:56She's not my wife, she's my sister.
- 15:01Throw your wife under the bus like that.
- 15:06So Abimelech take Sarah as his wife, and God visits him in a
- 15:09dream and he tells him you're a dead man.
- 15:15She's not supposed to be yours. She belongs to someone else.
- 15:19Abimelech claims his innocence. He's fearful.
- 15:22God confirms his innocence, and Abu Malik wakes up very early
- 15:27and makes things right. He tells his servants they're
- 15:29afraid, and finally they bring Abraham.
- 15:32And it's so funny. In that very chapter, we're told
- 15:34that Abraham is a prophet. So Abraham is now brought under
- 15:40investigation. And Abu Malik asks Abraham, hey,
- 15:43listen, you put us in a very dangerous position.
- 15:46Why did you lie to us? Why is it that you did this?
- 15:49You put me in a very compromising state.
- 15:52And here is Abraham's explanation.
- 15:54And it's the first time the phrase fear of God appears in
- 15:56the Scriptures. Abraham said, I did it because I
- 16:00thought there is No Fear of God at all in this place and they
- 16:04will kill me because of my wife. I did it because I thought there
- 16:09is No Fear of God at all in this place.
- 16:13And so I lied. How ironic.
- 16:17The man who observed that this place did not fear God himself,
- 16:20did not fear God. To think about it, you lied, you
- 16:25feared man. And if there's anybody here in
- 16:28the story who truly feared God, it was the Pagan king.
- 16:32Because when God told him you're not, you're not supposed to be
- 16:35with this woman, he said I'm getting rid of her, I'm obeying
- 16:39you. So you have a prophet according
- 16:41here to verse 7, who's telling this Pagan king?
- 16:46You and your people evidently don't fear God.
- 16:48At least I observed that. So I had to lie.
- 16:50And here's a man who obviously didn't fear God.
- 16:53Because when you fear God, you won't fear man.
- 16:57The fear of God cancels every other fear.
- 17:00Isaiah 812 Let him be your fear, let him be your dread.
- 17:04Don't worry about all these conspiracies, Israel, Judah
- 17:07specifically. Don't worry about all these
- 17:09nations that are conspiring against you.
- 17:11Just keep your eyes and you're on God.
- 17:17But Abraham's not totally wrong in this, at least in his
- 17:20analysis, at least in his commentary.
- 17:22I find it quite fascinating that the first time the expression
- 17:26fear of God is mentioned in the Bible, the Holy Spirit relates
- 17:30it to the potential loss of self-control in the area of
- 17:36sexuality. I did it because I thought there
- 17:41is No Fear of God at all in this place and they will kill me
- 17:44because of my wife Abraham. You're not wrong there.
- 17:50When you remove the fear of God from a person's life, when you
- 17:52remove the fear of God from society, it becomes now the
- 17:57grounds for much immorality. Here's my first blessing that I
- 18:02want to present to you, and I'm going to hurry up here.
- 18:06Number one, the fear of God is a deterrent against sexual
- 18:12immorality. The fear of God is a deterrent
- 18:16against sexual immorality. When a man has this awe of God,
- 18:23realize that it's not just a theological understanding, it
- 18:27impacts the soul. Let me say this way, the fear of
- 18:30God fulfills you, you know, and wanting us to pursue holiness
- 18:38and people even wanting others to pursue holiness.
- 18:41There's a lot of emphasis on behaving.
- 18:43Behave, behave, behave, behave. Yes, there are clear
- 18:46exhortations of what we should do and what we should not do.
- 18:49But I think about Paul and meditating on this truth.
- 18:51I think about Paul who said something in 2nd Corinthians 318
- 18:54where he says beholding the glory of God being transformed
- 18:59in the same image. And this comes from the Spirit
- 19:02who is the Lord. So Paul gives us a secret, how
- 19:07we are conformed, how we are transformed.
- 19:08And it's not by putting the cart before the horse.
- 19:11You can tell people to behave all you want, let them pound
- 19:14their heads against it. But Paul says you got to learn
- 19:18how to behold. You got to learn how to behold,
- 19:21and then when you behold, you'll be transformed and the behavior
- 19:24will follow. Let's return to the practice of
- 19:30beholding, beholding the glory of God.
- 19:35Then as a result, I am transformed.
- 19:39And so when I see Him and all that He is in his, in his
- 19:42accurate description as provided here in the Scriptures, there's
- 19:45something that takes place within.
- 19:47I'm mesmerized. I'm drawn to Him.
- 19:51I realize also that in Psalm 25 it says that the friendship of
- 19:55the Lord is for those who fear Him.
- 19:58And so you can't have intimacy with God unless you first fear
- 20:02God. You can't know depths of
- 20:05knowledge of Him in a personal way unless you have that
- 20:08foundation set. And when you experience Him in
- 20:10that place, oh, it satisfies. He who was full loads, honey.
- 20:15But to him who is hungry, everything bitter is sweet.
- 20:21He who is full loads honey. Look, I had breakfast today.
- 20:27I'm hoping to eat later on, but I've had plenty of breakfast is
- 20:30where I'm so full I don't eat till much later in the day.
- 20:35And let's just presume today was one of those days and I walked
- 20:38by a buffet and there is those aromas and there's those colors
- 20:42of the different cakes. Whatever it may be, I can tell
- 20:45you confidently because of what I ate that morning, I can walk
- 20:48by that and not even give it a glance.
- 20:51Why? Because I'm already filled with
- 20:52a different substance. I am already full.
- 20:58I loathe it. I don't need it.
- 21:00Not saying that you don't experience temptation, but all
- 21:03it gives you the strength to soar above it.
- 21:06Why? Because I see him and I know him
- 21:08and I'm drawn closer to Him and it does something to my soul.
- 21:14I can say more about that because sexual sin today, not in
- 21:17the world, even in the church, has become a Goliath type sin.
- 21:21And what we're hearing and seeing more than anything else
- 21:23is people like the Israelites of that time shaking and cowering
- 21:26behind the hills thinking who's going to take this giant down?
- 21:31It's possible not in your own strength, but by the grace of
- 21:34God who infuses in you the ability through a fear of him
- 21:40that causes you to be able to look at sin and say, I don't
- 21:43want you. Let's move forward here.
- 21:48Let's try to do this turn with me to Genesis 22.
- 21:51I want to bring you to the second blessing and fearing the
- 21:53Lord Abraham again, you know this story very well.
- 22:00Verse one after these things God tested Abraham and said to him,
- 22:03Abraham, and he said, here I am. He said, take your son, your
- 22:06only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and
- 22:10offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains
- 22:14of which I shall tell you I love this.
- 22:17Verse 3. So Abraham rose early in the
- 22:19morning. He didn't wait, he didn't sleep
- 22:21in that day. God gave me instruction, I'm
- 22:24going to obey it. He didn't press the snooze
- 22:25button. He rose early.
- 22:27And interestingly enough, the geographical location shows us
- 22:31here that it was a three day journey.
- 22:32God gave Abraham time to think about it.
- 22:37You just imagine this, here's this man, very old, waiting for
- 22:42this promise of a son. The promise comes and here he is
- 22:45now relishing in that promise, making memories with that
- 22:48promise. So much hope and future for the
- 22:50descendants of his own seed through this promise.
- 22:53And God one night says, I want you to give him up.
- 22:58Abraham doesn't debate, he doesn't argue.
- 23:00He rises early, he goes and I love this in verse 5.
- 23:03Then Abraham said to his young men as they arrived to the
- 23:05location, Stay here with the donkey.
- 23:07I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to
- 23:10you. Worship.
- 23:13This is worship. Finally.
- 23:17Now for the sake of time Abraham has his son lay there a
- 23:20wonderful picture of Christ. And in verse 12 we read as the
- 23:24Angel of the Lord intervenes after this man that has this
- 23:27knife in the air. Verse 12, he said do not lay
- 23:30your hand on the boy or do anything to him for now.
- 23:34I know that you fear God seeing you have not withheld your son,
- 23:39your only son from me. When you read this, you have to
- 23:44compare. You have to always remember,
- 23:46have I seen this before? And yes, it's not too far back.
- 23:49A very similar statement was made in the introduction of this
- 23:52chapter. Notice he says here, I know that
- 23:55you fear God seeing that you have not withheld your son, your
- 23:58only son for me. Go back to verse two.
- 24:02He said take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go
- 24:08to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering.
- 24:11Noticing the identification of Isaac in verse 12, the Angel of
- 24:16the Lord omits something that he introduced in verse 2.
- 24:19In verse 12 we read here it says the son, your son do not with.
- 24:24You have not withheld your son, your only son from me.
- 24:26In verse two he says your son, your only son whom you love.
- 24:30He didn't include that in verse 12.
- 24:32Do you know why? Because Abraham proved to God
- 24:35that he loved God more than Isaac, that's why.
- 24:43And he says you've passed the test.
- 24:45Now I know you fear me. There's a marriage between
- 24:50loving God and fearing God. If I'll say it this way, you
- 24:57can't know true love for God, greater maturity and love of God
- 25:02and for God without this fear. Blessing #2 The fear of God
- 25:10keeps the blessing of God in its proper place.
- 25:15We are very good at taking the blessings of God and loving
- 25:18those more than God himself. Isaac was a gift and God wanted
- 25:24to test him. Let me see if you love this
- 25:25promise more than the promiser. Give him up.
- 25:29He does, He's willing. God says you've proven yourself.
- 25:32You fear me. The fear of God causes us to
- 25:35honor Him as our supreme delight, our supreme joy, our
- 25:38supreme, supreme source of everything.
- 25:40It places God where He needs to be, in places, everything else
- 25:43where they need to be. Eli did not do that.
- 25:46Eli had two sons, Hofthy and Phineas.
- 25:49And we're told about Hofthy and Phineas who were priests in the
- 25:51Tabernacle. This is this is minute.
- 25:53These are ministers and the Holy Spirit says they were worthless
- 25:56men. You know why they were
- 25:59worthless? The same verse says because they
- 26:00did not know the Lord. You can be in ministry and not
- 26:03know the Lord. You can study theology with all
- 26:06those letters by your name and still not know God.
- 26:11They were worthless men because they did not know the Lord.
- 26:14And all these sins that were coming to Eli's attention and he
- 26:17just a light tap on the wrist, He did not deal with it
- 26:20adequately. Finally, an unnamed prophet
- 26:22comes in First Samuel 229 and tells Eli of the consequences of
- 26:27his sin. He proclaims it faithfully and
- 26:29he says this. For you have honored your sons
- 26:32above me. You have honored your sons above
- 26:36me. So here we go.
- 26:37We have Abraham, who has the son as a result of a promise,
- 26:40Abraham, a faithful man, Abraham with no great explanation to
- 26:43give up his son, and he does so to win the smile of God.
- 26:48And then you have this other man, Eli, with two sons,
- 26:50worthless men, disobedient, deserving of chastisement, and
- 26:54he's not willing to let go of his sons as he should because he
- 26:58didn't want to bring them to shame.
- 26:59You've honored your sons above me.
- 27:01The fear of God will help you honor God above everybody else.
- 27:04It keeps the blessing of God in their proper place.
- 27:08If we're not careful, we'll be like the Israelites.
- 27:11How do they make the golden calf in the wilderness?
- 27:14Where do they get it? They had one night to leave.
- 27:16Well, remember when they left, they took the the jewelry of the
- 27:19Egyptians. And God had in mind that that
- 27:22jewelry would be used. For what?
- 27:23Why? So they can look bougie in the
- 27:24desert? No, because he had a House of
- 27:28worship in mind that would require that material, an ark of
- 27:32the covenant, a tent with specific prophetic instruments
- 27:36and furnishings, and what was meant for the House of worship.
- 27:39They turn into a golden calf. We could take the blessing of
- 27:43God and make them in something that they should not be.
- 27:44Lastly, blessing #3 Leviticus. Leviticus.
- 27:48Yes, Leviticus chapter 19. This is going to be fast
- 27:53forwarded version verse 14. Leviticus 19, verse 14, This is
- 28:00the holiness code for the nation of Israel.
- 28:03And here we have these sporadic different commands and this
- 28:06one's caught my attention, He says in Leviticus 1914, you
- 28:10shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the
- 28:13blind, but you shall fear your God.
- 28:15I am the Lord. God's command here is greater
- 28:18than just the Israelites not being cruel toward the disabled.
- 28:24This in principle is a command that deals with taking advantage
- 28:28of a sinful situation because you believe that you will go
- 28:31unnoticed. If I take something from a blind
- 28:34person, it's much easier as it not.
- 28:35If I am my frustration curse somebody who's deaf in my
- 28:38presence, you get away with it a lot easier, right?
- 28:41Here's what the Lord is saying, knowing that that would be a
- 28:42temptation of the people. The blind may not see you, the
- 28:46deaf may not hear you, but I do so fear me.
- 28:51Blessing #3 The fear of God provides an unbroken sense of
- 28:57accountability. The fear of God provides an
- 29:01unbroken sense of accountability.
- 29:05There's a lot of talk about accountability.
- 29:07I think it's important. I've heard it all my Christian
- 29:10life, a lot of talk about community.
- 29:12I think communities is huge. I encourage every single one of
- 29:15you to be a committed member of a local church and to have
- 29:17people that you do life with. Absolutely, there are a lot of
- 29:20strategies of how to deal with a variety of sins, but I don't
- 29:24think they're sufficient. I believe we've left out
- 29:28something that is so important and that is the fear of the Lord
- 29:32because your accountability partner won't be able to go with
- 29:36you on every single business trip when you're in that hotel
- 29:39room by yourself. Your elders won't be with you in
- 29:43your room as you file your taxes.
- 29:48Your teachers are not going to be over your shoulder as you're
- 29:50browsing the Internet. But you know what will be there?
- 29:54The fear of God. The fear of God is your greatest
- 29:59accountability partner. Why?
- 30:03Because when you understand who He is and all his nature and all
- 30:05his power, you realize that he's all seeing, all knowing.
- 30:07I think of Joseph. You've heard this a million
- 30:08times. Let me present to you a million
- 30:10and one. Here's this man away from his
- 30:13home. Here's this man away from his
- 30:14family. Here's this man away from people
- 30:16who worship the true God. Here's this man in Potiphar's
- 30:18house and his wife is throwing herself at him.
- 30:23It's one thing to be tempted as you look on something or
- 30:25someone. It's another thing when the
- 30:27person presents itself to you persistently.
- 30:30And here's this young man, we're told he was handsome.
- 30:32He was, he was goodly shaped. And there he is.
- 30:34And day after day, he's resisting and he's resisting.
- 30:37And I can't help but be moved every time I stumble upon that
- 30:39story because this man was able to resist pre infilling of the
- 30:45Holy Spirit, pre law on Mount Sinai.
- 30:51How is this man be able to say no to something that most people
- 30:56would give in to? He could have gotten away with
- 30:59it. They could have kept it a
- 31:01secret. Finally he says to her, how can
- 31:05I do this great evil against God?
- 31:09That's the fear of God and it's your greatest accountability
- 31:13partner. I love my God.
- 31:16I know my God. I I these promises that I've
- 31:18enjoyed in God. Second Corinthians 7 one, Since
- 31:22we have these promises, let us bring holiness to completion in
- 31:27the fear of God. What's my motivation to stay in
- 31:29the fear of God? The promises, these promises.
- 31:33Why would I let go of these promises for a cheap thrill?
- 31:37I'm not, and I'm so close to my God.
- 31:40I've inherited so much from my God that I refuse to give myself
- 31:43to something that is inferior to the joys and the ecstasies that
- 31:47He gives me. Oh, I can tell you today about
- 31:50how again the fear of the Lord leads into friendship with the
- 31:53Lord. I could tell you how the fear of
- 31:55the Lord according to Romans 11 drains the heart from pride.
- 31:58I could tell you how the fear of the Lord according to
- 32:00Ecclesiastes 7 liberates people from legalism.
- 32:04Yes, the fear of God liberates you from legalism.
- 32:07I can tell you how the fear of God according to the Psalms
- 32:09promises the assurance of God's providential leading in your
- 32:12life. But time does not suffice.
- 32:15All my prayer is in this place is that you would leave here
- 32:20with the Psalm 8611 cry where David prayed.
- 32:23Unite my heart to fear your name.
- 32:29We pray fear away. Get this rid.
- 32:32Yes, you have every right to, but let me tell you the secret
- 32:35to squashing every other fear, the fear of him.
- 32:38Unite my heart. My heart is prone to wander,
- 32:41Lord, I fear it. So anchor it in your fear.
- 32:45Help me see you and behold, you know you.
- 32:47Peel away these layers of the flesh that make me casual around
- 32:51you. That's my prayer.
- 32:57Moody Bible Institute students, faculty, and everybody in
- 33:00between. Staff, fear the Lord your God
- 33:05and watch the blessings flow. Let's pray.
- 33:15Lord, we stand in awe of you today.
- 33:19Our hearts are moved by the revelation of your awe.
- 33:29Oh Lord, we just pray that prayer that David prayed.
- 33:36Lord, we know that this is a secret, a secret to longevity,
- 33:41to fostering integrity, to unlocking fruitfulness as people
- 33:46are being trained here for ministry, leadership, missions.
- 33:51Lord, help us have this fear. Thank you that it's a grace that
- 33:56we receive in the gospel, but it's a grace like many other
- 33:59graces that needs to be nurtured and protected.
- 34:03So we pray, Lord, that if that fear is there, may it grow,
- 34:05Lord, If it's not, there may be birthed.
- 34:08And Lord, may this place produce ministry, ministry leaders,
- 34:15ministers who undeniably fear the Lord.
- 34:20This is our prayer and our heart cry.
- 34:22Maybe not just for this moment, but maybe a perpetual plea.
- 34:27In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
- 34:41It was a great joy and an honor. I've been told to tell you that
- 34:44you're dismissed. God bless you.
