Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the We Are More podcast.
- 0:13My name is Alyssa.
- 0:15And my name is Bri.
- 0:16We're two sisters passionate about all things faith and feminism.
- 0:20We believe that Jesus trusted, respected, and encouraged women to teach and preach His
- 0:25word.
- 0:26And apparently that's controversial.
- 0:28Get comfy.
- 0:31Piss, piss, piss.
- 0:36You can't start like that.
- 0:38All right.
- 0:39Hello, everyone.
- 0:40Hello.
- 0:41Why do I always talk first?
- 0:44Because you're annoying.
- 0:45Oh, thank you.
- 0:47As Brianna sits there in sunglasses with a claw clip on the direct top of her head.
- 0:54It's a good look.
- 0:56If you put the claw clip, okay, life hack for you.
- 0:59If you put the claw clip at the very top of your head, you can lay down.
- 1:06That does sound like a pretty good hack.
- 1:08I know.
- 1:09Hey, all you people with hair.
- 1:12Most of you probably.
- 1:14Not necessarily.
- 1:15Not necessarily.
- 1:16They should have little claw clips for your leg hair.
- 1:18How long is your leg hair?
- 1:21Depends on the day.
- 1:22I shaved yesterday, but it was really unaffected if I found out this morning.
- 1:27Oh no.
- 1:28I looked and I was like, oh.
- 1:31Bree is just one of those razors that has the soap all around it.
- 1:35And I feel like you can just never get a close shave with those.
- 1:37Well, I think the issue is that you trust it too much.
- 1:42You don't look.
- 1:43Yeah.
- 1:44That's probably a sad thing.
- 1:45Or you just keep swiping and you think it's fine.
- 1:49I need to read that book all about you or whatever it is, American Girl.
- 1:53The American Girl one?
- 1:55We have it in the house right now.
- 1:57What is it called?
- 1:59The Care and Keeping of You.
- 2:00The Care and Keeping of You.
- 2:02Okay.
- 2:03So if you want a definition of who I am versus who Bree is.
- 2:06I feel like we've talked about that before.
- 2:10We had this book.
- 2:11It's called The Care and Keeping of You, right?
- 2:12All the girlies know it.
- 2:13Oh yeah.
- 2:14All the women know.
- 2:15It's like the puberty book.
- 2:17It's what you get when you're going through puberty.
- 2:19And for some reason, American Girl wrote it.
- 2:22Yeah.
- 2:23Why?
- 2:24They're like, you like dolls and you have a period.
- 2:27But it's so helpful.
- 2:32It explains everything in really basic terms and it's great.
- 2:36So we had a copy of it when we were kids and our mom paper clipped together certain pages
- 2:44about periods and tampons and whatever because she hadn't had that conversation with us yet.
- 2:50I would not have moved those paper clips if someone came up to me and said, if you don't
- 2:57look in those pages, the world is going to explode.
- 3:00I would not ever have looked between those pages.
- 3:04Brianna, the first thing she does, rip off the paper clips and read that section.
- 3:13Because all the fun people are with me.
- 3:14They want to know about tampons ASAP.
- 3:17We just want to know.
- 3:18They're curious.
- 3:19You can read the side of the box.
- 3:20I don't know if you know this, but when I was eight, I wasn't buying tampons and looking
- 3:27through the boxes.
- 3:28Mom probably had some.
- 3:29Mom?
- 3:30You want to chime in?
- 3:35Mom is unfortunately not here.
- 3:37Anyway, today we're going to be talking about the woman at the well.
- 3:44The woman, the woman at the well, well, well, well.
- 3:48I made that up when I was in the bathroom.
- 3:49Oh, I just want to hear like, is this a thing?
- 3:53Is this a Veggie Tales episode I don't remember?
- 3:55I feel like it's the tune to something.
- 3:57I don't know what it is.
- 3:58It's now to the woman at the well, which is the theme song to today's episode.
- 4:04Oh good.
- 4:05We get a theme song.
- 4:07Should I just take out our intro song and pop that in there?
- 4:11Just me on the loop.
- 4:12The woman at the well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well,
- 4:17well, well, well, well, well, well, well.
- 4:19Darn it.
- 4:20All the heck.
- 4:21We're going to be talking through this story.
- 4:25It's found in John.
- 4:26Bree thought it was found in all the gospels, but she's a liar.
- 4:30I'm just saying it's the Mandela effect because one of the top things that pops up on Google,
- 4:36just search whatever.
- 4:37It is that.
- 4:38It is the woman at the well story in all four gospels.
- 4:42Other people are with me.
- 4:44Well other people are looking for the information.
- 4:47As am I.
- 4:48You've convinced yourself.
- 4:49I took a class on this.
- 4:51I'm pretty sure.
- 4:52I don't know what to tell you.
- 4:53The internet says and so does the Bible.
- 4:56I'm sorry.
- 4:57I'm really upset.
- 4:58I'm sorry.
- 4:59I feel like my dreams are shattered just like the Berenstein Bears.
- 5:03Huh.
- 5:04Okay.
- 5:05Another Mandela effect.
- 5:06I can talk about this later.
- 5:07Oh good.
- 5:08So the story of the woman at the well is found in John.
- 5:15Sorry, Bree.
- 5:16And I believe it's four.
- 5:18John chapter four.
- 5:19So the basics of this story are that there's a woman and there's a well and there's Jesus.
- 5:29So this woman, I'm not going to read the whole four word story to you.
- 5:32I wish you would.
- 5:33I will not.
- 5:34I'm just going to kind of talk through it, but I would encourage you to read it.
- 5:37So John chapter four is where you can find it.
- 5:39Pause everybody.
- 5:41Everybody pause.
- 5:42Open your Bibles to John chapter four.
- 5:47Read it to yourself and then hit play.
- 5:49All right.
- 5:50So now that you've done that, I'm still going to explain it to you because some of you won't.
- 5:55Like Bree.
- 5:56Bree would not have.
- 5:57No.
- 5:58I don't follow directions.
- 6:00And the pastors say repeat after me or whatever and they say, or they say turn to your neighbor
- 6:04and say, no, I absolutely refuse.
- 6:07I do too.
- 6:08And it drives Nathan insane.
- 6:09I just, I'm not going to, no, I'm not going to do that.
- 6:13It's not kindergarten.
- 6:14We're not repeating after me.
- 6:15I never do.
- 6:16Okay.
- 6:17The woman at the well, there's a Samaritan woman and she is walking to the well.
- 6:25It's Jacob's well.
- 6:26So this is like an ancient, I don't know how else to say ancient.
- 6:30It's a really ancient well.
- 6:31Find some more synonyms for ancient please.
- 6:34Really really old.
- 6:36So she walks out kind of in the middle of the day.
- 6:39Now normally people would have gone out in the morning or in the evenings because it's
- 6:44cooler.
- 6:45Yeah.
- 6:46Cause it's, they're in the desert.
- 6:47It's hot.
- 6:48They're out bleeding in the desert.
- 6:49I'm telling you what.
- 6:51And so she goes in the middle of the day, probably for some privacy.
- 6:56Now there's arguments back and forth about why she would have wanted that privacy.
- 7:01Some scholars say that she probably wasn't treated very well by the other women in her
- 7:06community and so she didn't want to be around them.
- 7:08I do that.
- 7:09Yeah, I do a lot.
- 7:11But our friend Mark, who has a fantastic blog that we've talked about in the past, she's
- 7:16fantastic.
- 7:17She says that there's no evidence that this woman was there to avoid other people or that
- 7:22she was being treated poorly in her community.
- 7:25There are other instances in the Bible of women going to the well at random times of
- 7:30the day.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:32Hey, sometimes you just need water.
- 7:33Yeah.
- 7:34And potentially just today specifically, she wanted some privacy.
- 7:37She just wanted a quiet walk.
- 7:39Maybe her kids were driving her crazy.
- 7:42Maybe the chickens got out and she just ran away.
- 7:45She just left that problem for someone else.
- 7:51So she goes out to the well.
- 7:53And I want to talk through, I want to say, tell this story from a feminist perspective,
- 7:58but I think more tell this story from the perspective of a woman.
- 8:04Yeah.
- 8:05I think sometimes it's really hard to put Bible stories, to make them real in your head
- 8:11because it's so far removed.
- 8:12How often are we in what century are we in?
- 8:16The 21st?
- 8:17Yes.
- 8:18Now, obviously other places, they are walking to wells.
- 8:24I don't want to, you know what I'm trying to say.
- 8:26But us sitting here in the United States.
- 8:28I can go downstairs and get a bottle of water.
- 8:31Right.
- 8:32But let's make it something more real in our heads.
- 8:34You're stopping at a gas station.
- 8:36Yeah.
- 8:37Perfect.
- 8:38So let's say as a woman, you're stopping at a gas station.
- 8:41I did that today, but not for gas.
- 8:45Now you're specifically going at a time where nobody else is going to be around.
- 8:50Late at night.
- 8:51Late at night.
- 8:52She walks to the well or you walk to the gas station or drive to the gas station.
- 8:58And as she gets there, there is a singular man there.
- 9:05Now men should not be at this well.
- 9:07Okay.
- 9:08Men don't come to the well and get the water.
- 9:10That's the women's job.
- 9:11Very, very rarely are you going to see a man at this well.
- 9:17Imagine if you're at a gas station, the middle of the night, you pull in and there's a singular
- 9:22man just chilling.
- 9:26He's not pumping gas.
- 9:27He's not doing the thing he's supposed to be at the gas station for.
- 9:29He doesn't even have a car.
- 9:31Yeah.
- 9:32He's just standing there.
- 9:33Okay.
- 9:34You're terrified.
- 9:37I would be terrified.
- 9:38I would pull my car back out and leave.
- 9:41I'd say, I'll let this thing run out of gas before I stop here.
- 9:46But she probably doesn't have that option.
- 9:47I mean, water is non-negotiable.
- 9:49And also you're walking.
- 9:50It's not like you're going to be like, I'll come back later.
- 9:54Catch you next time.
- 9:56No.
- 9:57So she has to go into this situation that probably to her feels very threatening, very
- 10:04scary.
- 10:05At the very least, she's uncomfortable.
- 10:08Yeah.
- 10:09If she had come at a different time of day, there would be other women around.
- 10:11Even if there was a man in the mix, like, okay, but there's witnesses, right?
- 10:16There's not anybody.
- 10:17It's just her and him.
- 10:18Yep.
- 10:19And she gets there and Jesus doesn't even have a cup or anything to drink from the well.
- 10:26He doesn't have a bucket to get water out of the well.
- 10:28He has nothing.
- 10:30He's just suspiciously hanging out as a man somewhere he shouldn't be in the middle of
- 10:35the day.
- 10:38Now as she walks up to him, the next thing that she notices is that he's Jewish.
- 10:43Now she's a Samaritan woman and the Samaritans were-
- 10:46At odds with.
- 10:49They were at odds with the Jewish people, but they came from the same ancestors.
- 10:53It's like in Harry Potter, how they call the people who have one wizard parent and one
- 11:00human parent, they call them half-bloods.
- 11:04It's like that.
- 11:05So she was someone who had some Jewish descent and some non-Jewish descent.
- 11:09I love that so far we've referenced this very popular historical Bible story with a gas
- 11:16station in Harry Potter.
- 11:19How can we make this real to you?
- 11:21That sounds on par with everything in my life.
- 11:23Yeah, I like Harry Potter.
- 11:25So she walks up to him and she sees that he's a Jewish man.
- 11:28Now I don't know how she recognizes this.
- 11:32I don't know if there was a large difference in looks or in clothes or anything like that.
- 11:36And super interesting thing about the Jewish people at the time is that most of the religious
- 11:43Jewish people would avoid Samaria completely.
- 11:47So when they were on their journeys to get wherever they were going, walking.
- 11:52They would go around Samaria.
- 11:58It's like two extra days of walking.
- 12:01That's how much they disliked these people, okay?
- 12:03I cannot think of anyone, and I don't like a lot of people, but I can't think of anyone
- 12:07I dislike enough to walk two additional days just to avoid them.
- 12:13Although I will go out of my way to go to a different Starbucks, just because I like
- 12:17the coffee.
- 12:18But the coffee's better.
- 12:19It's not the people, it's the coffee's better.
- 12:21The people are nicer there too.
- 12:23A little bit.
- 12:24My best friend is there.
- 12:27Best friend, if you're listening.
- 12:29Hey bestie.
- 12:30You make really good coffee.
- 12:32I'm sure you don't know my name.
- 12:35They know my name.
- 12:36I'm mobile owner.
- 12:38So she gets there, Jesus is there, he's a Jewish man.
- 12:43In my mind, all of these things say I'm in a dangerous situation.
- 12:50Because if she's, let's say, and I'm not going to use Jesus in this example, but let's
- 12:56say it's a different man, and he attacks her, and she takes that to the Jewish authorities,
- 13:04they're not going to listen to her.
- 13:05Not only is she a Samaritan who they don't like, she's a woman.
- 13:09The testimony of a woman at the time, it's well documented, was literally not considered
- 13:15truthful.
- 13:17It wasn't considered evidence of any kind.
- 13:19They barely considered women people.
- 13:22So there's no way anybody's caring if she gets attacked.
- 13:27So the story, as we go on, the way that I have been told it is, and I've heard this
- 13:33preached a thousand times, pastors will often talk about her as though she's really rude
- 13:41to Jesus.
- 13:42And you'll see where that comes from in a second.
- 13:45Or really sassy with Jesus, or she's got an attitude, or whatever.
- 13:49But I want to put forth as you listen to what their conversation is that she's scared.
- 13:56She's on the defensive already.
- 13:59And I don't know about you, but in my life, when I get into situations like that, I do
- 14:05one of two things.
- 14:07If someone comments something to me and I feel uncomfortable and unsafe, I try and laugh
- 14:11it off and diffuse the situation that way and get out as quickly as possible.
- 14:16Before I get angry and try and push that person away as quickly as possible.
- 14:20You'll puff up your peacock feathers and make yourself as big as possible.
- 14:24And say, get out of the way.
- 14:26I'm big and scary.
- 14:28All five feet of me.
- 14:31And so I think in my mind, and this is just conjecture from Alyssa, I think she's scared.
- 14:39I think she's really scared.
- 14:42Additionally, and we'll get into it, she has all kinds of background with men that's scary.
- 14:51And she probably has no trust for men at all.
- 14:55And now here's a man that she really, really, really shouldn't trust.
- 14:59And of course we have the benefit of knowing it's Jesus.
- 15:02But she didn't know that.
- 15:03She didn't know.
- 15:04Even if he said, my name's Jesus, that means nothing to her at the time.
- 15:08She's like, awesome, my brother's name is Jesus.
- 15:11Also, Samaritans didn't practice quite the same religion as the Jewish people.
- 15:19My understanding is it was kind of like a hybrid kind of how they were partially Jewish
- 15:25and partially not, because they were not allowed in the temples.
- 15:28The Jewish people wouldn't let them in there.
- 15:30So even if somehow she, and she does know a little bit as the story goes on, even if
- 15:37she did know, okay, this is kind of the Jewish religion, she wouldn't have all that connection.
- 15:43Also, she's a woman, so she wouldn't have been allowed to be educated in religion.
- 15:49So Jesus starts talking to her, right?
- 15:52And the first thing he does is ask her for a drink.
- 15:56And this is, so I'm pulling some of this from Marg's article, and he asks her for a drink
- 16:03and she's shocked that he's speaking to her at all.
- 16:07And again, now you're on the defensive.
- 16:09Imagine that you pull up to the gas station, there's the single man over there and you're
- 16:13just trying to pump your gas as fast as possible and you are like, things are fumbling and
- 16:17you're trying to get your credit card in there.
- 16:20And then he walks over to you, there's nobody else around.
- 16:24He walks over to you and starts talking to you and he asks, hey, can you come pump the
- 16:29gas in my car?
- 16:32I didn't bring anything to pump gas with, I didn't bring a car, but can you come help
- 16:37me?
- 16:38Have you seen that?
- 16:39Here we go.
- 16:40Have you seen that TikTok?
- 16:41Oh my gosh.
- 16:42It's just like security footage of a gas station and this person was pumping their gas and
- 16:50a van pulls up and a bunch of people jump out, try to mug the guy and he takes the gas
- 16:55out of the car and sprays it into their car and in their faces.
- 16:59That's what I would do in that moment.
- 17:01Yeah, because you've seen the TikTok.
- 17:02See, TikTok is educational, ladies and gentlemen.
- 17:06Sure, sure it is.
- 17:08Actually I've seen some really great TikToks lately.
- 17:10Yeah, you zip it.
- 17:13So anyway, so he asks her for a drink and I find this fascinating.
- 17:18So in Marg's article, she talks about the fact that, so the woman basically says, how
- 17:26can you ask me for this?
- 17:27You're Jewish, you're a man.
- 17:29You shouldn't even be talking to me.
- 17:31She points this out to him again on the defensive, leave me alone.
- 17:35Stop speaking to me.
- 17:37I'm scared.
- 17:39And so the words that are used depending on the translation are, she says, Jews do not
- 17:45associate or have dealings with Samaritans depending on the translation.
- 17:50So the Greek word for associate, I'm going to butcher this, okay?
- 17:55We all knew you're going to.
- 17:58So it's sugchromai.
- 18:01Say it again for the people in the back.
- 18:04Nope.
- 18:05And it also means the sharing of eating utensils and dishes.
- 18:11Okay.
- 18:12So I think back to segregation.
- 18:17That's kind of a similar feel here.
- 18:20And I love breaking that apart because I've never heard anyone explain it that way.
- 18:24No, that's really interesting.
- 18:25Yeah.
- 18:26Like, don't touch my bucket.
- 18:28Yeah.
- 18:29Well, he would have thought she was unclean.
- 18:33And it goes into that later.
- 18:34So this is fascinating.
- 18:36So the Jews have all these rules about when women are on their periods, right?
- 18:42Bleeding in the desert.
- 18:43When you're on your period, you are considered unclean for the entire time.
- 18:48Nobody can touch you.
- 18:49Like you're a pariah for seven days out of the month, which maybe is not terrible.
- 18:54Maybe you get to be alone.
- 18:55And then you have to go through a whole cleansing ritual in order to be able to be allowed back
- 19:02in the temple, to be able to be allowed back in society.
- 19:05I'm not even kidding.
- 19:06It's for real.
- 19:07So the Jews regarded Samaritan women as, and this is a quote, menstruants from the cradle.
- 19:15Oh my gosh.
- 19:18Oh my gosh.
- 19:20So can we title the podcast?
- 19:23Menstruants from the cradle.
- 19:25No.
- 19:27Oh.
- 19:30So that would have meant that she was always considered unclean by them.
- 19:36A hundred percent of the time.
- 19:38Constantly bleeding from the day she was birthed, literally from the cradle.
- 19:44Man, what a life.
- 19:46So she's, there's no reason Jesus should be talking to her here.
- 19:51He shouldn't be here.
- 19:52He shouldn't be in her country.
- 19:53He shouldn't be at her well.
- 19:55He should not be anywhere in the vicinity.
- 19:59Did you bring me here?
- 20:00Did you rub my lip?
- 20:04So Jesus starts talking to her.
- 20:07She says, why are you speaking to me?
- 20:11And Jesus starts talking about living water.
- 20:15Now the metaphor here, so he says this well, you're going to drink from it and you're going
- 20:19to be hungry.
- 20:20I'm sorry, thirsty again.
- 20:21You probably always be hungry.
- 20:22You leave thirsty again.
- 20:25But I have living water and if you drink this living water, you'll never be thirsty again,
- 20:30right?
- 20:31Now I want you to go back to the gas station.
- 20:33Okay.
- 20:34I'm closing my eyes.
- 20:35I'm back at the gas station.
- 20:39You're trying to pump your gas.
- 20:40You're trying to go as quick as possible.
- 20:41This man comes up to you.
- 20:42He's like, help me out.
- 20:43You're like, no, me, me.
- 20:46And then he starts talking like a psycho.
- 20:49Okay.
- 20:50Now they have this gas at my house.
- 20:53That's the best gas you'll ever have.
- 20:58Okay.
- 21:01So we're making light of it.
- 21:05But the point is, it sounds really crazy.
- 21:09What he's saying.
- 21:10And there's no precedent for this in the Bible that I can find this whole living water metaphor
- 21:15in the Old Testament in anything.
- 21:18And she probably wouldn't have been familiar with that anyway, but it wasn't even there.
- 21:22This is a fresh concept.
- 21:24Yeah.
- 21:25And Jesus, he's a little confusing sometimes.
- 21:27He talks in these parables and yes, with the benefit of time, we can sit here and pull
- 21:33them apart.
- 21:34Right.
- 21:35But she's standing there and this man is talking crazy talk.
- 21:39And she's already scared of him.
- 21:40And now he's talking about water that you're never thirsty with and gas that will fill
- 21:47up your car until the end of time.
- 21:49I want that gas.
- 21:50He's got a Tesla at home.
- 21:53He doesn't need any gas.
- 21:57So he starts talking about this and she's like, okay, I'm going to go with you here.
- 22:04Right.
- 22:06Now I again, Alyssa's translation of things, you take this however you want.
- 22:11But my thought is I'm going to pacify this man.
- 22:16I'm going to use the situation to get out of this alive.
- 22:20I'm going to smile and nod.
- 22:23And so she kind of does.
- 22:25And she asks him, okay, where can I get this living water?
- 22:29Now interestingly, living water in a way meant flowing water.
- 22:34So that might've been how she understood it, like a river.
- 22:38So many songs just went through my head.
- 22:41Did you want to sing one of them?
- 22:43I hear it's flowing with milk and honey.
- 22:47Sounds sticky.
- 22:48Cause we're going to the promised land.
- 22:51Hey, hey.
- 22:52Wow.
- 22:53Those veggie tales in case any of you had a sad childhood and didn't see it.
- 22:57The only reason that came to my head was the word flowing.
- 23:04I thought we were going to get a period joke.
- 23:06Oh, I could do that too.
- 23:08We should really warn dad and Brandon at least.
- 23:11Don't listen.
- 23:12I don't care.
- 23:15That's going to go somewhere else with that.
- 23:19And that's where it landed.
- 23:21So this story is, it's a very long story, right?
- 23:24This is actually, interestingly, the longest recorded conversation that Jesus has.
- 23:30The longest recorded one.
- 23:32And so she says, where can I get this living water?
- 23:36And Jesus would have made me a lot even more uncomfortable.
- 23:42And he says, well, go get your husband.
- 23:44We'll talk more about it.
- 23:46Which wouldn't have been that weird for the time because realistically they shouldn't
- 23:50have been talking anyway.
- 23:53So maybe she's like, maybe this would have been a normal statement to say, okay, we've
- 24:02talked too much.
- 24:04I'd love to keep chatting about this with you, but it would be more appropriate if you
- 24:08brought your husband.
- 24:09Right.
- 24:10Because of the time.
- 24:11Yeah.
- 24:12So she says to Jesus, I don't have a husband.
- 24:15I would say the same thing to Jesus.
- 24:17Now she, again, whenever I've heard this preached, it's like being really sassy, right?
- 24:26That's not indicated in the Bible.
- 24:28It's kind of like a text message where you, when you're reading the Bible, like you don't
- 24:31know what the tone of voice was.
- 24:34It's not even the same language.
- 24:37Emojis were created.
- 24:38They didn't have them back then.
- 24:39They didn't have emojis.
- 24:40No.
- 24:41They didn't have emojis.
- 24:42They had faces.
- 24:43So she tells this to Jesus and Jesus basically says, yeah, you're right.
- 24:50You don't have a husband.
- 24:52You've had five husbands.
- 24:54And I'm trying to do this in such a tone that is conveyed in the Bible because there's no
- 24:57judgment from Jesus.
- 24:59No.
- 25:00He's just stating a fact.
- 25:01Yep.
- 25:02There's no condemnation whatsoever.
- 25:04And he says, you're right.
- 25:06You don't have a husband.
- 25:08You've had five husbands.
- 25:10And the man that you're with now is not your husband.
- 25:13Just matter of fact.
- 25:15Okay.
- 25:16So now you're back at the gas station.
- 25:18I'm back at the gas station.
- 25:20The man has come up to you.
- 25:21He said, back at my house, I've got a Tesla.
- 25:26It doesn't need any gas if you want to come back with me.
- 25:31And then he starts telling you the deepest, darkest secrets about yourself that he absolutely
- 25:37should not know.
- 25:39Brianna, you've had 17 boyfriends.
- 25:42That's not true.
- 25:45That's not true at all.
- 25:50Teresa, you've had 49 boyfriends.
- 25:54Sorry, mom.
- 25:57And she gets scared probably again.
- 26:01Now it doesn't say that, but I'm just thinking in this scenario, you would have to be.
- 26:08It's frightening, right?
- 26:10The stranger man is talking to me.
- 26:13He shouldn't be.
- 26:14He's talking a lot of nonsense.
- 26:16And now he's a psychic.
- 26:18He's that so raven.
- 26:20But he knows way too intimate details about her life.
- 26:24Probably details.
- 26:25Now, it doesn't say that she's ashamed of these things necessarily.
- 26:29Some people have assumed that because she's at the well in the middle of the day, that
- 26:33that means people aren't nice to her.
- 26:35People are crossing the street to avoid her, and so she's ashamed of her past.
- 26:40There's really nothing to indicate that.
- 26:43However, it's probably not something she was advertising.
- 26:47So you probably would have had to know her for quite a long time to know, yeah, she's
- 26:51been through five husbands at this point, and now she's with someone who isn't her
- 26:56husband.
- 26:57And it doesn't indicate what that relationship looks like.
- 26:59It doesn't mean she's sleeping with him.
- 27:01But really, there's no, again, there's no judgment from Jesus.
- 27:06And Jesus at no point to her says, go and repent, or go and sin no more.
- 27:13He doesn't say that, and that's significant because he said that to other people.
- 27:17He does not say that to her.
- 27:19So there's no indication of wrongdoing on her part in this, but she gets shamed all
- 27:24the time.
- 27:25S-L-U-T, isn't that a song?
- 27:31Yeah, sweet little unforgettable thing.
- 27:34Thank you.
- 27:35You're welcome.
- 27:37Marg's article then goes on to say that her history fits a pattern that would be common
- 27:45for women of her time.
- 27:46She got married probably in her early teens.
- 27:51And I know that's- Just like our great grandmother.
- 27:53Yeah.
- 27:54She was a little icky, but it was common at the time.
- 27:57That was expected.
- 28:00So she probably got married very, very young.
- 28:03And from there, the Samaritan laws- And I tried to look up specifically what the Samaritan
- 28:09laws for divorce would have been.
- 28:11And all I was able to find- There's not, I mean, there's not a lot of historical context
- 28:16here.
- 28:17I'm sure if I dug real far that I probably could.
- 28:20But it says in the first century, Samaritan divorce laws were based on the Torah, which
- 28:25was the first few chapters of the Bible.
- 28:29And they gave the husband almost complete power to initiate a divorce.
- 28:34When it's presented at church, in the churches I've been in, it's so often, well, she divorced
- 28:42all these men.
- 28:43She went through a bunch of men because she wanted to sleep around.
- 28:46And so here she is.
- 28:48Or even if they're not saying that, it's kind of implied that something was wrong with her,
- 28:55that the men didn't want to stay in her life.
- 28:58And the reality is men had full power to divorce women.
- 29:04She would not have had almost any power at all to divorce her husbands.
- 29:10But they would have had almost complete power to divorce her with zero repercussions.
- 29:18They're either dead or they're divorcing her.
- 29:21So imagine the heartbreak.
- 29:25Because also once you have been married and then you're no longer married, you almost
- 29:31have to get married again quickly in that society.
- 29:35Because otherwise, again, you're an outcast.
- 29:38Women wouldn't have had a lot of options for making money.
- 29:42So once she had been married and was no longer married, whether it was through divorce or
- 29:47death, her option was essentially to either become a prostitute or live on the streets
- 29:56as- Begging.
- 29:57Yeah.
- 29:58Or to get married again.
- 29:59Yeah.
- 30:00Those were her options.
- 30:01So once you go through the first divorce or death, you've got three options.
- 30:08Go through the second divorce or death, three options.
- 30:10None of them are good options.
- 30:13But this is all survival.
- 30:15So now think of the crazy man at the gas station.
- 30:19I don't like to refer to this as like Jesus is crazy, but in her mind that had to have
- 30:24been kind of what the thought process was.
- 30:27He tugs on the most sensitive, painful part of your life.
- 30:34Not because you've done anything wrong, but because you have been hurt by everyone in
- 30:40that story.
- 30:42You have been ripped to shreds.
- 30:45I would guess it's probably a combination of death and divorces.
- 30:50Unless she's a black widow, baby.
- 30:54The divorces, I think, it would have hurt in a deeper way because they tossed her to
- 31:01the side.
- 31:02Whether it was- It was a choice to leave.
- 31:04Yep.
- 31:05Death really isn't a choice.
- 31:07She wasn't important enough for them to keep in their lives.
- 31:11And so Jesus is going into this and she's like, ah!
- 31:19And the only thing that she can make sense of is that maybe he's a prophet.
- 31:25So a prophet at that time, or prophecy now also, it would be as though God gave you a
- 31:35message for someone.
- 31:37God gave you information about this person.
- 31:38It came straight from God.
- 31:39You have no way of knowing it before or after.
- 31:43It just came, words came straight from heaven out your mouth.
- 31:47So that's what she's assuming is happening here.
- 31:50And prophets would have been more common back then.
- 31:52I don't think they were common common, but more common at the time.
- 31:57Particularly within the Jewish religion, we see that happen several times.
- 32:01So in John 419, she says, sir, I see you are a prophet.
- 32:07So she directly says, you're a prophet.
- 32:10And Jesus, he starts talking about religion.
- 32:14When John 421 says, Jesus told her, believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will
- 32:19worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
- 32:23You Samaritans worship what you do not know.
- 32:25We worship what we do know because salvation is from the Jews.
- 32:28So he's talking about the Jewish religion specifically and how the Samaritan religion
- 32:32has broken off from that and it's different.
- 32:35And then verse 23, but an hour is coming and is now here when the true worshipers will
- 32:39worship the Father in spirit and in truth.
- 32:42Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him.
- 32:44God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
- 32:48And again, it's a little confusing.
- 32:50The wording is a little confusing.
- 32:52I would recommend looking it up in.
- 32:54I like the message for stuff like this to just which is a version of the Bible.
- 32:59It's not a translation.
- 33:00It's a like a story.
- 33:03It's written a little differently.
- 33:04It's supposed to be written more in like modern English.
- 33:06So it's a little easier to understand.
- 33:08So then she says, no, I know.
- 33:12I know the Messiah is coming.
- 33:13I've been waiting on this too.
- 33:16So again, the Samaritan people kind of knew some of this information.
- 33:19So she says, I know that's happening.
- 33:22And when the Messiah comes, when God's Son comes, he'll explain all of this to us.
- 33:28He'll explain to us how to get to heaven, how to worship better, how to become one people,
- 33:35whatever it is that she's hoping for in the future.
- 33:39And Jesus says, so this is verse 26.
- 33:42Jesus told her, I the one speaking to you, am he.
- 33:47I don't think that the gas station analogy works anymore.
- 33:50So I'm gonna let it go.
- 33:53Man at the gas station.
- 33:56It's fine.
- 33:59Turns out he's actually Jesus.
- 34:00Now I think the gas station analogy is so good because it allows us to put her in context
- 34:07and think of her as a real human person in our time.
- 34:10But at the end of the day, she's actually talking to Jesus.
- 34:14And this is the first recorded time that Jesus ever tells anybody that he's the Son of God.
- 34:21How cool.
- 34:22That's so cool.
- 34:23It's so cool.
- 34:24To a lady person.
- 34:25I feel like a nerd.
- 34:28I've always said that about you.
- 34:29You have always said that about me.
- 34:31From the day you were born.
- 34:33You weren't there the day I was born.
- 34:35Menstruating.
- 34:36Anyway, I just think that's really cool.
- 34:43Here she is, someone, whether she's an outcast from society or not, someone that hadn't had
- 34:50it easy.
- 34:53Someone that had struggled.
- 34:55And her story, which she probably at the time felt was so insignificant.
- 35:00And probably how everybody in this world feels at some point.
- 35:03Your story doesn't matter.
- 35:05You're a little ant on a log just floating along.
- 35:10And her story is recorded in the Bible.
- 35:13And people talk about it for years and years and years.
- 35:16That's incredible.
- 35:17It is incredible.
- 35:20When you think of your life and you're going through the hardest moments, it doesn't feel
- 35:25like you're important.
- 35:28And yet here she is.
- 35:30And she's talking to her creator.
- 35:34And she doesn't know it right away.
- 35:35But then she does.
- 35:37And she believes him.
- 35:39Now if I'm talking to the man at the gas station, I don't know that I'm believing him when he
- 35:44says he's Jesus.
- 35:45But I think that God probably gave her a supernatural understanding of that.
- 35:50Yes, exactly.
- 35:51But you have to think also, I love to dig into the background of it.
- 35:56And again, this is guesses and assumptions.
- 35:58But I would think God had been preparing her for that moment.
- 36:03She talks about the fact that she knows about the Messiah.
- 36:07She's waiting for him.
- 36:09Once he gets there, he'll explain it.
- 36:10So she has some background knowledge.
- 36:13She didn't just randomly show up here.
- 36:15Jesus didn't just randomly show up here.
- 36:18Choices were made on both sides to wind them up at this point.
- 36:22I hate to say this, but everything happens for a reason.
- 36:28Maybe she slept in late that day.
- 36:29Right.
- 36:30She's like, ah, piss, piss, piss.
- 36:33I need some freaking water.
- 36:36I might as well go now.
- 36:40It's hot.
- 36:41I don't really want to, but I'll go.
- 36:44Well, and then Jesus, and I think it's tough because Jesus is fully God and fully human.
- 36:51So did Jesus know when he made the choice to tell his disciples, no, we're going through
- 36:55some area, we're not cutting around the way everybody else does, we're going straight
- 36:59through?
- 37:00No, I'm going to have this encounter with this woman.
- 37:05Did he plan for this moment to be the moment that he was going to reveal who he was, or
- 37:09did he just have a connection with this person?
- 37:12I think it's hard to wrap your mind around it, how you think of the three in one.
- 37:17You understand it, but you don't understand it.
- 37:21If you think too hard about it, you're going to get your brain in knots.
- 37:24I think Jesus was fully God and fully human, so it was kind of a blend of both maybe.
- 37:30Like he knew, but he didn't know, but he knew.
- 37:33And if you're confused about the three in one thing, that's a very churchy thing where
- 37:40we talk about the Trinity, which is God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, who are like three people
- 37:46in one person.
- 37:47I don't know, it's very confusing.
- 37:50I bet you if you Google it, AI has a great answer.
- 37:53I bet it does, and we're not going to go into it because I don't have another four hours
- 37:56to explain or to understand it myself.
- 38:00It's a lot.
- 38:01It's a lot.
- 38:03So the rest of her story goes that she believes him.
- 38:09She says, great, awesome, give me that living water.
- 38:13This is super cool.
- 38:15And she can't hold it in.
- 38:18She runs back to her village.
- 38:19Now it doesn't say, did she say goodbye or did she just turn and book it?
- 38:24She forgot.
- 38:26So she goes and she runs to her town, and the implication is that Jesus and his disciples
- 38:30are eventually going to go through her town, so she's going to see him again.
- 38:35But she goes to her town, who are Samaritan people who have been hurt by the Jewish people,
- 38:42and she's telling all these people, there's this group of Jewish people.
- 38:46And I'm not going to say Jewish men because we're also female women, not female women,
- 38:52but female female disciples following along.
- 38:56So there's a group of Jewish people, again, who should not have been there.
- 39:01The Samaritan people hate the Jewish people.
- 39:03The Jewish people hate the Samaritan people.
- 39:05And she's running in like, hey, hooray, the Jewish people are coming.
- 39:09And they're like, hmm.
- 39:10Like settle down.
- 39:11Pass.
- 39:12What's wrong with you?
- 39:14Do we need to start a war party?
- 39:17It's probably not a positive reaction.
- 39:21And we don't know what her status was in the community, but whatever it was, she threw
- 39:26it all to the side and probably embarrassed herself running around shouting through the
- 39:32streets.
- 39:33Now she's the crazy person.
- 39:35We all got to be crazy.
- 39:37And she's like, the Messiah is here.
- 39:40We've heard about him, and he's walking down the street.
- 39:43He's behind me.
- 39:44You see him in the distance?
- 39:46He doesn't have a bucket for the well, but he's here.
- 39:51It's as she immediately left her water jug and goes into town.
- 39:54So she didn't have a water jug either.
- 39:56So because of her, tons of people in her town believe that testimony.
- 40:00And it does say that like God intervened and people believed her.
- 40:07Instead of these two warring people groups fighting as one went through town, they believed
- 40:14her.
- 40:15And Jesus, when he came, she preached alongside the disciples.
- 40:21And now instead of her story being, you've had five husbands and the man you're with
- 40:27now is not your husband, instead of that story, and I hope we can redeem her in a way because
- 40:32that's so much to focus when you hear this in church services, instead of that, her story
- 40:39is preaching.
- 40:40I met the Messiah.
- 40:44And I'm going to tell the world about it.
- 40:47And the world is going to remember that forever.
- 40:51She went and she preached the gospel to all of her people.
- 40:56And we don't know what happens to her after that.
- 40:58Did she keep preaching the gospel?
- 41:00Did she get married for a sixth time?
- 41:04Or seventh or eighth.
- 41:06We don't know.
- 41:07We don't know the rest of her story.
- 41:08But we know in this moment, Jesus found her so valuable that he chose her to tell the
- 41:20most important truth ever in the history of anything.
- 41:25Some could say, our one true calling as men and women to share, preach and teach the gospel.
- 41:36I read a really interesting piece one time and I'm trying to remember how I wrote it.
- 41:42I want to say it was like Beth Helles and Bart, but I'm not sure enough to say that
- 41:48for sure.
- 41:49But I read an article and she had a seminar at a conference and it was about sharing your
- 41:57faith.
- 41:58It wasn't even necessarily about preaching.
- 41:59It was about sharing your faith.
- 42:02And it was at the same time as a cookie making seminar.
- 42:07It was Beth.
- 42:08It's in her book.
- 42:09Was it Beth?
- 42:10It was like a women's retreat and there was different classes.
- 42:13And there was one for sharing the gospel or whatever, sharing your story, and there was
- 42:17one for cookie making.
- 42:19And they put them at the same time.
- 42:21And so her seminar was so poorly attended.
- 42:24There were very few people there to hear about sharing the word of God.
- 42:31Because most of them wanted to go bake cookies.
- 42:33And look, I love cookies.
- 42:34Don't get me wrong.
- 42:35I'll eat a whole plate full of cookies.
- 42:38Love a cookie.
- 42:41I would prefer someone else make them for me.
- 42:44But I love a cookie.
- 42:45Although I love cookie dough.
- 42:46Oh, cookie dough is great.
- 42:48We have frozen cookie dough balls at work and then we bake them for people like fresh
- 42:55baked cookies when you come to the dentist office.
- 42:58That's really a good selling point for us.
- 43:01But sometimes we break into the freezer and just eat the cookie dough.
- 43:07That sounds like a good time to me.
- 43:08It is a good time.
- 43:09Back to Beth.
- 43:10Back to Beth and cookies.
- 43:13She had a woman come up to her and say, I'm sorry I didn't come to your lecture.
- 43:19I would have.
- 43:21But really, my main calling is to nurture my family.
- 43:28I don't need to worry about ministering to other people, other women, other whatever.
- 43:32Now that's not a direct quote.
- 43:34It's in her book.
- 43:35I highly recommend.
- 43:36Yeah, The Making of Biblical Womanhood.
- 43:38So you can read all about that.
- 43:40Definitely give that a listen or read it.
- 43:43Whichever you prefer.
- 43:44Grab the book by the butt and read it.
- 43:47But I think that's the attitude of a lot of women in Christian circles because we've been
- 43:52told our whole lives, your highest calling is your family.
- 43:56So you don't really develop as much of a desire to go out and teach and preach God's word.
- 44:05But I think what's important to understand is that gives me so much anxiety to think,
- 44:10oh my true calling is to share the word of God.
- 44:14But I think you just have to pray about it.
- 44:16I think you have to say, God, if you want me to share your good news, give me an opportunity
- 44:23and put those words in my head because they're not coming out my mouth from my head.
- 44:27But I think it's also important to remember that God knows who you are.
- 44:32So it's like you and I right now, I wouldn't think I'm fulfilling my greatest calling,
- 44:36but look what we're doing.
- 44:38We're sharing the word of God from the comfort of my bedroom.
- 44:41It's a little hot.
- 44:43It's not that comfortable.
- 44:45I remember in vacation Bible school when we were little, they gave you little ribbons
- 44:51and awards and whatever.
- 44:53I loved those ribbons.
- 44:54I did too.
- 44:55I loved those ribbons.
- 44:57And I would get all of them because I would memorize.
- 44:59I was like the good student, right?
- 45:00So I memorized all the verses.
- 45:01I did all the things, but there was one and it was like, invite a friend.
- 45:09And that gave me, I was, I couldn't have been more than eight.
- 45:13That gave me a level of anxiety I cannot describe to you because I am an introverted introvert
- 45:19who introverts, okay?
- 45:21That should go on his shirt.
- 45:25We could have so much merch.
- 45:27Piss, piss, piss.
- 45:28Piss, piss, piss.
- 45:29I've always said that.
- 45:30Introverted, introverted, who introverts?
- 45:31I love it.
- 45:32I have a shirt that has introvert embroidered on it, but I really am like that is who I
- 45:39am as a person.
- 45:40I don't like going out and initiating chats with people.
- 45:44I just, I can't.
- 45:47And even growing up as people are like, share your testimony, share God's word, share whatever.
- 45:53I'm like, no thank you.
- 45:55I don't want to do that.
- 45:57But God made me who I am.
- 46:00God made me an introvert and he didn't make me wrong.
- 46:03No.
- 46:04He didn't make him.
- 46:05Well.
- 46:06Shut up.
- 46:08I think a lot of times in the church extroverted people are really raised up and like, look
- 46:12at them, they're amazing.
- 46:13And they are amazing, but so are introverted people.
- 46:17People are amazing.
- 46:18Period.
- 46:19No buts.
- 46:20Yeah.
- 46:21God made introverted people.
- 46:23And in that, what I never expected was that God would give me an outlet to share his word
- 46:29here.
- 46:31She's pointing at the computer.
- 46:36Here on this podcast.
- 46:39I just think it's really cool that when you feel like you don't have a purpose anymore,
- 46:47when you feel like your tragedies are too much or your personality is too much or whatever
- 46:52it happens to be, that God has so much for you that Jesus would come up to you and reveal
- 47:02to you the first time that he was the son of God.
- 47:05And it's going to be shaped uniquely for you and all of the attributes that you possess.
- 47:11It doesn't matter if you're extroverted or introverted.
- 47:14It doesn't matter if you're short or tall or if you've been married five times.
- 47:17No.
- 47:18If you've been not married at all, God is going to find your purpose and he's going
- 47:21to shape it around all those little unique things about you individually that he knows
- 47:25about you.
- 47:26He knows every hair on your head or the lack thereof.
- 47:32And I think it's important to remember that not just he knows it, he made you.
- 47:38Like a potter with a lump of clay.
- 47:43I did a lot of ceramics and not a lot came out of that.
- 47:46I know.
- 47:49I used to imagine, because I have super curly hair and I've said that before, but when I
- 47:53was a kid, for some reason, this image was always in my head that when God was making
- 47:57me up in heaven, like I imagined little tiny toddler me, I don't know why I was a toddler
- 48:02instead of a baby, but I was a toddler.
- 48:04And you didn't know where babies came from.
- 48:06Nope, did not.
- 48:07I imagined that God took each piece of my hair around his finger and twisted it around
- 48:13and that's why it was curly.
- 48:14That is so sweet.
- 48:16I really do.
- 48:17Oh my gosh.
- 48:18You know, I wanted to die young, so I would be young in heaven because I thought it would
- 48:24be more fun than being old with like bad knees.
- 48:30Our stories are very different.
- 48:33We need to go to bed.
- 48:39Time to sit.
- 48:40Okay.
- 48:41Because that was kind of my image in my head as a kid and that was me feeling God's love
- 48:48very deeply as just a little kid.
- 48:51So I hope that you can think of yourself like that.
- 48:54Whatever type of image you want to use that God created every aspect of you.
- 48:59He created your physical being, but also emotionally who you are.
- 49:05Your soul.
- 49:06Yeah.
- 49:07I think in an episode recently, any flaws that you may see in yourself, God created.
- 49:14God put them in there knowing that you would be exactly who you are and still having, not
- 49:21in spite of it, but because of it, having all these plans for you.
- 49:26Maybe we should be a little bit kinder to ourselves.
- 49:29When you look in the mirror, say, God made me special and he loves me very much.
- 49:35Oh, but really I think we spend so much of our lives worrying, especially women, worrying
- 49:41about all of the flaws that we see in ourselves rather than being like, I'm beautiful and
- 49:48I'm kind and I'm moderately smart.
- 49:53And people see that as being vain, conceited, but it's not.
- 49:58If you're beautiful, you got to show it off.
- 50:00God never said, put yourself down.
- 50:04He never said be less than I made you.
- 50:07You'd be putting God down, really.
- 50:09God made you smart.
- 50:10God made you beautiful.
- 50:12God put you in the position you're in, in the place you're in, in the community you're
- 50:16in, all for a purpose.
- 50:18And that's so easy to preach it.
- 50:20It's so much harder to live it.
- 50:21For sure.
- 50:22For sure.
- 50:23Because I'm saying these things and I, in the back of my mind, I'm like, I'm nearly
- 50:28years old and I've done nothing.
- 50:31I think we can all look at our lives like that.
- 50:34When you look at, they say this about social media, when you look at everyone else's highlight
- 50:38reel versus your worst moments.
- 50:41Yes.
- 50:42So true.
- 50:43Everybody has totally different paths.
- 50:45And we're going to talk about that a little bit in some other episodes.
- 50:48Brie's doing one, actually it'll come out before this.
- 50:50Done one.
- 50:51Brie just did one on singleness in the church and next week I'll do one on being married
- 50:56in the church.
- 50:57I think it's so funny when we call it singleness because it's so ingrained in my head that
- 51:03that's a dirty word.
- 51:04That's a sad, sad word.
- 51:05But it's so not.
- 51:06But it's not.
- 51:07Actually, it's very freeing.
- 51:09And I hope that, like I haven't recorded that episode yet.
- 51:12I hope I had good things to say.
- 51:14I'm sure you did.
- 51:16I'm sure you were inspirational and they all loved it.
- 51:18Honestly, I'm sure I was.
- 51:20I'm sure I cracked a joke and picked every good song.
- 51:24Every good song.
- 51:26Several by Beyonce.
- 51:27All right, so I'm going to wrap this up because if we don't, I'm going to have a heat stroke
- 51:31and die.
- 51:32You'll be young in heaven.
- 51:35Great.
- 51:36Not that young.
- 51:37You're right.
- 51:38Not that young.
- 51:39So we've been every week challenging ourselves to see if we can expand our listener base
- 51:45a little bit and asking you guys to share with someone in a specific place.
- 51:50So Brie has a specific place that she would like to share this week.
- 51:54Nebraska.
- 51:55The moon.
- 51:56Where else could I say?
- 51:59Brie, pick one place.
- 52:01Spain.
- 52:02Spain!
- 52:03I've always loved you, Spain!
- 52:08So if anyone knows anyone in Spain, not the moon.
- 52:12We assume you don't know anyone on the moon.
- 52:14But if you know anyone in Spain, please do share it with them and share it with anybody
- 52:19that you think would enjoy our craziness and our laughter and wants just a moment of utter
- 52:27insanity in their lives.
- 52:29Go ahead and share it with them.
- 52:30What are you trying to say?
- 52:31Have you listened to these episodes?
- 52:32Have you ever been wanting to hang out with two fun sisters?
- 52:37We should have a promo video.
- 52:40Oh no.
- 52:41Did you just wish you were one of the girls?
- 52:44Listen to the podcast.
- 52:45That was a great promo.
- 52:46Thank you.
- 52:47We can't even manage to film real TikToks.
- 52:48No, I really struggle.
- 52:49Okay.
- 52:50So like, comment, share.
- 52:51And peace and blessings.
- 52:52We love you.
- 52:53Goodbye.
