- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with.
- 0:11Intention and energy. Each day, this is for those who
- 0:15seek to make life truly meaningful.
- 0:17Get ready for impact. Hello.
- 0:22Hello, everyone. Welcome to the show.
- 0:24Thanks for listening today. In this episode, we're actually
- 0:27going to be a little bit more strategic than some of our other
- 0:30conversations that we've had. This episode is really going to
- 0:33be about beating distraction and the noise of the world.
- 0:37It's also going to be about creating a day-to-day life that
- 0:40you enjoy and one that works for you.
- 0:44And our focus is really going to be around time time management,
- 0:47because one of the biggest problems for people is time
- 0:50management. It seems fairly simple, but it
- 0:53truly takes people down when they don't have this under
- 0:56control in their lives. And before we get into this
- 0:59conversation, when I'm first going to acknowledge is that we
- 1:03live in a time where we are busier than ever.
- 1:05We sleep less than we ever have as a humanity.
- 1:09We are more inundated with information than we ever have
- 1:12been before by an exponential amount.
- 1:15And the demands on people are high.
- 1:20They really are. We have to acknowledge that this
- 1:22is a time in history where we are facing technology and
- 1:27circumstances that have changed the landscape of being a human
- 1:32on this earth. There's so much that we are
- 1:34contending with. So how do we create a life and a
- 1:37schedule for ourselves that actually works in our life where
- 1:41we can function, where we can fulfill our responsibilities,
- 1:45but we can also build our dreams and connect with people and have
- 1:50fun and truly live a life that feels meaningful to us?
- 1:53Because at the end of the day, that's what it's about.
- 1:56Humans want to feel like there is meaning and significance to
- 2:00this life and we want to feel like we are purposeful.
- 2:03So it has to be more than just work or just play.
- 2:09We have to find a balance and be able to manage our time so that
- 2:13we can truly be the creators of our lives.
- 2:17And again, something else to acknowledge, there are just
- 2:21going to be some seasons of life where it's more difficult and
- 2:24things are a little more more out of control.
- 2:27For example, new parents with infants, that's A season.
- 2:32That's A season where time management looks a lot different
- 2:35than somebody who doesn't have a newborn or doesn't have young
- 2:38kids. People who are in a new
- 2:40business, they're starting a new business as an entrepreneur, or
- 2:44they are in some kind of a transition in their life.
- 2:47I'm thinking about what they call the sandwich generation,
- 2:51which is this generation of people right now who are dealing
- 2:55with aging parents and also kids.
- 2:58I'm also thinking about people who don't have basic needs met
- 3:01right now or don't have enough resources.
- 3:04All of these situations are seasons of life where it's going
- 3:08to be more difficult, Things are going to feel a little bit more
- 3:11challenging around time. Because there's just.
- 3:13So many variables, and it is a little harder to fight for the
- 3:17essentials. We can acknowledge that.
- 3:20But for the purposes of this conversation, let's assume
- 3:23that's not who we're talking to and that in general, we're
- 3:26talking about the American population where basic needs are
- 3:31met and you have some resources, you have your safety, etcetera.
- 3:36In general, people waste a lot of time, and I share this
- 3:41example in my leadership workshops that I do for Teams,
- 3:44but it really gets people every time.
- 3:47We'll take scrolling and screen time for an example.
- 3:50It's a pretty innocent activity in most people's minds, even
- 3:53just reading news or shopping online.
- 3:56It doesn't have to be scrolling social media.
- 3:58It's just being on your screen. And if you look at your screen
- 4:01time, you'll probably be surprised, maybe a little
- 4:04shocked. But say someone is online for
- 4:08two hours a day doing one of those things, scrolling,
- 4:12shopping, reading news, just spending time staring at their
- 4:16screen. 2 hours a day is 14 hours a week, which adds up to
- 4:20be 56 hours a month. That's about 2.3 days a month,
- 4:26which is 28 days a year, a full month out of the year that has
- 4:30gone to the Internet. Here's the thing that actually
- 4:35scares me a little bit. The daily average of screen time
- 4:38for adults between 16 and 64 is over six hours.
- 4:41It's actually around six hours and 40 minutes, depending on
- 4:46which research study you're looking at.
- 4:48This is phone and TV. This is not necessarily work
- 4:52related screen time. That's separate.
- 4:56So six hours and 40 minutes a day.
- 4:59That's 45 hours a week, which is 7.5 days a month, a little over
- 5:05a week, 91 days a year, which is over three months, over three
- 5:11months of the year being devoted to entertainment related screen
- 5:16time. Holy crap, it's so crazy to me.
- 5:20And it speaks to this idea that on average people are feeling
- 5:24overwhelmed and like they don't have enough time, but truly they
- 5:27do. They're spending one to three
- 5:29months out of the year on devices and entertainment that
- 5:33might not be giving them much back.
- 5:36And it's certainly not time that's being spent being the
- 5:39creator of our own lives. So now that we're all freaked
- 5:43out, let's talk about how to take control back, how to take
- 5:48control of your time back so that you feel like you can
- 5:50manage your time well and that you've created a schedule for
- 5:53your life that works for your life that allows for you to have
- 5:57the balance between relationships, connections,
- 6:01play, work, pursuing goals, etcetera.
- 6:04So there's a few things that I think we have to highlight here
- 6:07when we're thinking about time management.
- 6:09The first one is ownership. You have to take ownership of
- 6:13your schedule because it's your schedule, it's your time, and at
- 6:18the end of the day, you are the one controlling your calendar.
- 6:21Most of what's on your calendar is a result of your yeses, the
- 6:26things that you say yes to. The pushback that I get from
- 6:29clients is, well, what if a boss puts a meeting on there or
- 6:32there's always emergencies popping up in my business or in
- 6:35my home life that I have to deal with?
- 6:37Yes, I understand that. But again, this is your
- 6:41calendar. You have to own it.
- 6:43And if it's not working for you, you have to get curious about
- 6:46why it's not working and start to take steps to remedy that.
- 6:50If meetings are always being thrown on your schedule last
- 6:52minute, how can you remedy that so that you can be functional in
- 6:55your day-to-day? If emergencies or crises or
- 6:58chaos is always popping up in your home life, what can you do
- 7:02about that? How you how can you create a
- 7:04different structure so you're not living in chaos?
- 7:08The second thing to think about is boundaries, and this is
- 7:11related to the ownership of your calendar, but it really is about
- 7:15the yeses that you give to people.
- 7:17So many people overextend themselves, and there's so many
- 7:21reasons for that. But the bottom line is you have
- 7:24to make sure that the yes that you're giving is one that you
- 7:27want to give. And if you feel like you are
- 7:30overextended or overwhelmed, take a look at the stuff that's
- 7:33on your plate. Do a little audit of what you
- 7:36are doing in your day-to-day. Is there stuff that you can
- 7:39delegate? Is there stuff you can delete?
- 7:41Or is there? Stuff that you can automate,
- 7:44make it automatic so you don't have to think so much.
- 7:47Or maybe there's just things that you have to prioritize
- 7:50differently. But being boundaried around your
- 7:53schedule is one of the most freeing things that you can do
- 7:56because it allows for you to take control of your time and
- 8:00not be giving away all of your bandwidth to other people's
- 8:04agendas. Which is what happens so often,
- 8:07especially when we're jumping on our devices right when we step
- 8:10out of bed and we start answering texts and emails and
- 8:14work stuff and dealing with other people's agendas.
- 8:18The third thing to think about is something that I call magic
- 8:21hour. And a coach shared this term
- 8:23with me years ago. But magic hour is basically, you
- 8:27have a time in the day when your brain works best.
- 8:31SO my magic hours in the morning, and I know that I have
- 8:34a window of about 3 hours when I feel like my brain's on fire.
- 8:39And what I've learned is that I have to schedule my deepest work
- 8:42during that time or my hardest projects.
- 8:45Does it always work out that way?
- 8:47No, of course not. But the more that I can practice
- 8:50it, plan for it, the more I do it, the easier it is.
- 8:54What's happening is that so many people put off the hard stuff
- 8:58and the deep work, the stuff that takes the most brainpower.
- 9:01They put it off until like 3 or 4 in the afternoon and they're
- 9:04doing sort of menial tasks and checking off things on their To
- 9:08Do List. Things like answering emails,
- 9:10reading the news, even doing chores around the house.
- 9:15Trust me, you can empty the dishwasher in the evening.
- 9:18Don't waste your precious magic hour brainpower on stuff like
- 9:24that. Stuff that can be done when
- 9:26you're a little bit more fatigued in the brain or
- 9:28physically fatigued. Stuff that you can do on
- 9:31autopilot. Don't prioritize that stuff.
- 9:34Take advantage of your magic hour and protect it.
- 9:36Create some boundaries around it.
- 9:38Make sure it's distraction free. I promise you, you will feel so
- 9:42much more efficient if you can capitalize on that time.
- 9:45Another important part of time management is, of course,
- 9:48planning ahead. Good God, this is one of the
- 9:52most important ones. Just three minutes of planning
- 9:55ahead the night before your day can save you so much time the
- 9:58next day. Just get the document up that
- 10:01you need to be working on the next day.
- 10:03Get it ready to go on your computer, make a list of your
- 10:06three main projects, put your workout clothes out ahead of
- 10:09time, prep your meals the night before.
- 10:12Schedule a couple of emails or texts to go out the next day.
- 10:16And then also think about what might derail you and have a plan
- 10:19for that build in the time to do the stuff that you love also
- 10:23like seeing your friends and your family, going on hikes,
- 10:26being outside, listening to music, reading all of that stuff
- 10:30that brings you joy. You can plan for it.
- 10:32And when you've planned ahead, you'll be amazed at how much
- 10:36time you actually have to do the things that you care about.
- 10:41The next one is what I call just do it.
- 10:43And really, this is where the rubber meets the road.
- 10:45Just do. The work that you say that
- 10:48you're going to do, if you plan it, if you prepare it, if you
- 10:51put it in your calendar, just do it.
- 10:53Stop letting yourself get so distracted.
- 10:55Turn off your phone, Turn off the notifications.
- 10:58Create a setting where you can think.
- 11:00Put a brain foods playlist on Spotify.
- 11:03Listen to music that inspires you.
- 11:05I love listening to Above and Beyond.
- 11:07Their meditation album is amazing.
- 11:09You can light a candle. You can make your space amenable
- 11:12to being productive. Whatever it takes for you, but
- 11:14just do it. If you say that you were going
- 11:17to do something, follow through with it.
- 11:19Keep those promises to yourself so that you can be in integrity
- 11:22and you can build some trust around how you manage your time.
- 11:27And then finally, the last one is to honor your time.
- 11:30And what I mean by that is your time is your most precious
- 11:33commodity. You want to be the designer of
- 11:35your life. You're really talking about
- 11:38being the designer of your time because we think we have endless
- 11:41amounts of time and then a few years go by and people are
- 11:46coming to me so frustrated by the fact that they didn't do
- 11:49what they wanted to do. They say despite the fact that I
- 11:52have all these great intentions, I'm having the same six months
- 11:55over and over again. I haven't made the progress that
- 11:58I was hoping to make or I haven't achieved that milestone
- 12:00that I've been working so hard for.
- 12:03Honor your time. It truly is our most precious
- 12:07commodity. I know that some of these things
- 12:10can seem like reminders, but we all need reminders.
- 12:13And I know that this episode, this conversation is a little
- 12:17more strategy centric. But what I see is that when
- 12:20people truly get control of this part of their lives, they are
- 12:24lighter, they are less stressed, they are more peaceful.
- 12:27They're not as reactive. They don't feel like their life
- 12:30is as chaotic. They feel less like the victim
- 12:34and more like the captain of their own ship.
- 12:36And that's a really exciting way to feel.
- 12:39I want that for you. So my challenge to you this week
- 12:42is to take your time back. This is not about being perfect
- 12:46and it's not about being some kind of rigid robot that has
- 12:49everything planned out and ultimate discipline.
- 12:52And it's not about that. This is about having agency in
- 12:55your life and truly being the creator of your time and your
- 12:58schedule. There's so much power in that.
- 13:01And I guarantee if you can really claim this and take
- 13:05ownership of of this element, this time element, your impact
- 13:10will become so much more exponential.
- 13:11You will be able to accomplish so much more, but you'll also
- 13:14just raise your frequency. You'll be higher energy, and you
- 13:18will see that you will have a more profound, powerful impact
- 13:21on the people around you. So I hope this helps.
- 13:24I hope this spurs on some insights for you.
- 13:26Take back your time this week, really claim it, be the owner of
- 13:30it and see what happens as you navigate through this week.
- 13:34I hope you have a fantastic week.
- 13:35Thank you for being here and as always, thank you for being
- 13:37ready to impact. Thanks for listening to Impact
- 13:41Ready. I hope today's episode inspired
- 13:43you to own your impact and recognize that you.
- 13:45Are powerful. By elevating our energy and
- 13:48awareness, we can create exponential change in this life.
