Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily A Badi here bringing you another installment
- 0:23Speaker 1: a five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I'm feeling so much
- 0:27Speaker 1: hurdle love this week. Yesterday on my Instagram, I've been
- 0:32Speaker 1: working on creating merch for a while and I'm now
- 0:35Speaker 1: in the process where I'm designing it and I put
- 0:38Speaker 1: out in my Instagram story. On my Instagram story, I
- 0:42Speaker 1: put out, what should the sweatshirts the hats say because
- 0:47Speaker 1: in my head it was going to say the word
- 0:49Speaker 1: hurdler in big letters, But it seems as though the
- 0:53Speaker 1: hurdle community really wants something that says another hurdle conquered.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I feel passionately about this. That's why I sign off
- 1:02Speaker 1: every episode that way. But I of course would love
- 1:06Speaker 1: even more of your feedback, So if you have some,
- 1:09Speaker 1: feel free to shoot me a DM either over on
- 1:11Speaker 1: the Hurdle Podcast account at Hurdle Podcast or hit my dms.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'm over at Emily A Body as well. I'm doing
- 1:18Speaker 1: something a little bit different this week four or five
- 1:21Speaker 1: minute Friday. I'm going to tell you a story that
- 1:24Speaker 1: is exclusive to the show. And what I mean by
- 1:27Speaker 1: that is, oftentimes there's a lot of crossover between the
- 1:31Speaker 1: weekly Hurdle newsletter, and of course this Friday episode. But
- 1:35Speaker 1: this week I am getting a little personal and talking
- 1:39Speaker 1: a little bit about my apartment hunting situation. So if
- 1:43Speaker 1: you are new to the show, welcome. My name is Emily.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I have lived in New York City for ten years.
- 1:51Speaker 1: All ten years have been on the breast side, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm finally leaving. Not to be dramatic, don't worry, I'm
- 2:00Speaker 1: not going very far. I'm moving from where I live
- 2:04Speaker 1: in the northern part of Manhattan to Brooklyn. And I
- 2:09Speaker 1: made that decision over the pandemic because I wanted to
- 2:14Speaker 1: get more space, and I knew that I would be
- 2:16Speaker 1: able to get more space for my money. My money
- 2:19Speaker 1: would be able to go further if I left Manhattan
- 2:22Speaker 1: and went to Brooklyn. Now it's interesting, right because when
- 2:24Speaker 1: I let the world, so to speak, into this decision
- 2:28Speaker 1: on Instagram, I got a lot of feedback from different
- 2:30Speaker 1: people being like, this is a mistake, you shouldn't leave Manhattan.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Other people were like super excited about it. Of course,
- 2:36Speaker 1: everyone has an opinion, but I feel really confident in
- 2:40Speaker 1: this decision and really excited about it. I'm really excited
- 2:44Speaker 1: for this change. I'm ready for a clean slate. With
- 2:49Speaker 1: that said, last weekend, I finally found an apartment. I'm
- 2:53Speaker 1: going to keep the specifics of where the apartment is
- 2:57Speaker 1: under wraps for a little bit by but what I
- 3:00Speaker 1: will say is I was very open to different areas.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I was open to different neighborhoods in Brooklyn because I
- 3:08Speaker 1: could see myself being happy in a lot of different ones.
- 3:11Speaker 1: You know, while there are perks to an area like
- 3:13Speaker 1: Williamsburg being young and trendy, there are also perks to
- 3:17Speaker 1: other areas like Prospect Heights or Borham Hill or Brooklyn Heights.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I mean, gosh, there are so many options. I'll be upfront,
- 3:25Speaker 1: the whole process was really really emotional. I mean, I've
- 3:29Speaker 1: talked on the show about being a woman in my
- 3:34Speaker 1: early thirties single making a move like this on my own,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and it was interesting in the apartment hunting process because
- 3:42Speaker 1: so often I'd walk in and a broker would be like,
- 3:44Speaker 1: so is it just you? And I just wanted to
- 3:47Speaker 1: be like, yeah, mother, whatever, Yeah, it's just me. I
- 3:52Speaker 1: am here. I can do this on my own. I
- 3:55Speaker 1: don't need a partner to move into this two bedroom anyway.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I dig it was emotional for me because yes, like,
- 4:03Speaker 1: of course, the wow, this is such a big life change.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I didn't think that I would be here at thirty
- 4:07Speaker 1: three doing this on my own, Like, yeah, that's one thing,
- 4:11Speaker 1: but really like more emotional, just because of how proud
- 4:14Speaker 1: I am of myself, Like I never thought that I'd
- 4:17Speaker 1: be doing it because I didn't think that it was
- 4:20Speaker 1: going to be in my wheelhouse. I never thought that
- 4:23Speaker 1: I would be in a place where I felt confident
- 4:27Speaker 1: enough in what I have going on and where I'm
- 4:30Speaker 1: going that I would be able to establish myself in
- 4:33Speaker 1: like this kind of home, a home that has a
- 4:36Speaker 1: room dedicated to my work and recording and writing and
- 4:41Speaker 1: bookshelves and natural light in my living room and new
- 4:46Speaker 1: appliances and oh my god, just so much stuff. Oh
- 4:50Speaker 1: my goodness. When I was on the phone with my
- 4:52Speaker 1: girlfriend after the night that I applied for the apartment,
- 4:54Speaker 1: I was I was just crying because if you've listened
- 4:59Speaker 1: to show, then you've heard me say this before. I
- 5:01Speaker 1: felt that it would mean that I made it when
- 5:04Speaker 1: I had someone else to accept my packages. And I
- 5:06Speaker 1: know that sounds a little ridiculous, and of course that
- 5:09Speaker 1: could be more than just a doormant. It could mean
- 5:11Speaker 1: that I have a partner to join me, or I
- 5:14Speaker 1: have a building manager because my business now has its
- 5:17Speaker 1: own office, like many different options for someone to accept
- 5:20Speaker 1: the packages, and me not to divert everything that ever
- 5:22Speaker 1: gets sent to me to a FedEx location. And so
- 5:25Speaker 1: I've said this for a long time, and walking out
- 5:28Speaker 1: of that building, that apartment that I applied to that
- 5:31Speaker 1: happens to have a doorman, was just this full circle
- 5:35Speaker 1: moment for me, because for a whole year in twenty
- 5:39Speaker 1: nineteen going into twenty twenty, when I thought that I'd
- 5:42Speaker 1: be moving in twenty twenty, before the pandemic, I would
- 5:45Speaker 1: say that in twenty twenty, I'm going to have someone
- 5:47Speaker 1: else accept my packages. And I kept saying that, and
- 5:51Speaker 1: I kept writing it down, and I literally started manifesting that,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and then the pandemic happened. And of course, I mean
- 5:58Speaker 1: not to downplay the inn amount of challenges that came
- 6:02Speaker 1: hand in hand with the last fourteen fifteen months, but
- 6:06Speaker 1: part of me believes in my gut that the last
- 6:08Speaker 1: fourteen fifteen months happened so that I could really focus
- 6:12Speaker 1: on working my hardest on staying in this one place.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Although it may not have been the home that I
- 6:17Speaker 1: was hoping for at the time, and start to put
- 6:21Speaker 1: aside some money that maybe would have been spent traveling
- 6:25Speaker 1: or running around the city or god doing who knows what.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I mean.
- 6:29Speaker 1: The fact that there are mostly no broker fees in
- 6:33Speaker 1: Manhattan right now, and that apartment buildings are giving multiple
- 6:38Speaker 1: months rent for free to incentivize people to move in.
- 6:41Speaker 1: That was just never, ever, ever something that I thought
- 6:45Speaker 1: would happen in my lifetime here in the city. So
- 6:49Speaker 1: talking to my friend on the phone and getting emotional
- 6:51Speaker 1: and thinking about how far I've come and what is
- 6:54Speaker 1: possible for me. Obviously this conversation was before I found
- 6:57Speaker 1: out that I got the apartment, but it was just
- 6:59Speaker 1: so special that I was finally in this position to
- 7:01Speaker 1: do this for myself, and that I did this for myself.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That's so freaking awesome, right. It's an important reminder, just
- 7:11Speaker 1: this idea that we are in control to an extent.
- 7:14Speaker 1: You have input as to the direction of your life
- 7:18Speaker 1: if you are willing to work hard. I'm not saying
- 7:20Speaker 1: that we can control every circumstance, but I am saying
- 7:23Speaker 1: that there is a world of knowledge and opportunity out
- 7:26Speaker 1: there if you are willing to have hard conversations and
- 7:29Speaker 1: put yourself out there. And you know how I know
- 7:31Speaker 1: that I've grown over the last couple of years. I
- 7:35Speaker 1: got the apartment acceptance and I was texting my father
- 7:39Speaker 1: and I literally said to him, I am about to
- 7:43Speaker 1: work harder than I have ever worked in my life.
- 7:47Speaker 1: You know, we get to these points that maybe we
- 7:49Speaker 1: never thought that we would get to. And I think
- 7:51Speaker 1: the indicator of someone who is ready for challenge, who
- 7:56Speaker 1: is always hunting for more, is you don't rest when
- 8:00Speaker 1: you necessarily accomplish a goal. Like of course you recognize it,
- 8:04Speaker 1: but then you ask yourself what's next. And let me
- 8:08Speaker 1: tell you, I'm excited about what's next, and I'm excited
- 8:10Speaker 1: about what that brings for my life. Prompt for you
- 8:13Speaker 1: this week, what is one thing, a manifestation that you
- 8:17Speaker 1: want to put into the universe, something that you want
- 8:20Speaker 1: for your life in the coming year. What is one thing,
- 8:24Speaker 1: one manifestation that you want in the coming year that
- 8:27Speaker 1: you're ready to put into the universe. Highlights of the
- 8:31Speaker 1: week links to all of this goodness in the show notes.
- 8:35Speaker 1: First up, it's time to celebrate Does Lindon's fifty K
- 8:39Speaker 1: world record. How could I not give some props to Dez.
- 8:42Speaker 1: You know we love her on the show. She's been
- 8:45Speaker 1: on twice and recently this week she ran a fifty
- 8:49Speaker 1: k world record in two hours, fifty nine minutes and
- 8:52Speaker 1: fifty four seconds. That's seven minutes ahead of the existing
- 8:56Speaker 1: world record, and casual she averaged just that's a you know,
- 9:00Speaker 1: five forty seven mile pace. So there's that. Read how
- 9:05Speaker 1: to create a happier, healthier living space during springtime from
- 9:09Speaker 1: Shape Hi. As we've established here, my name is Emily.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I am preparing to decorate a completely new home and
- 9:17Speaker 1: I am addicted to Pinterest, so obviously this article about
- 9:21Speaker 1: creating a happy and healthy space certainly caught my mind.
- 9:24Speaker 1: A lot of good tips in here. I know that
- 9:26Speaker 1: the concept of having a separate workspace, rejuvenating your workspace
- 9:31Speaker 1: for the warmer weather, I am all about it. Support
- 9:36Speaker 1: birth Queen. I recently hosted a conversation for Lula Lemon
- 9:39Speaker 1: in honor of Woman's History Month, and in doing that
- 9:42Speaker 1: I met Rachel Nixon. She is a mom, a doula,
- 9:45Speaker 1: a lactation counselor, and she's also a Lula Lemon ambassador
- 9:49Speaker 1: and founding mirror trainer. She also happens to be. As
- 9:52Speaker 1: if that laundry list of awesomeness wasn't enough. The founder
- 9:55Speaker 1: of Birth Queen, which is a non profit working to
- 9:58Speaker 1: combat the Black maternal health crisis. Birth Queen educates, supports
- 10:02Speaker 1: and empowers of Black women, parents and birth and people,
- 10:05Speaker 1: and funds training for dula's midwives and lactation consultants. So,
- 10:09Speaker 1: as it's Black Maternal Health Week this week, I wanted
- 10:12Speaker 1: to share a link in the show notes for those
- 10:14Speaker 1: who would like to donate and spread some information about
- 10:18Speaker 1: Rachel's cause. Snag some tops and bras for twenty percent
- 10:23Speaker 1: off at Athleta. I'm linking to some of my favorites
- 10:25Speaker 1: in the show notes. A follower I brought this sale
- 10:28Speaker 1: to my attention yesterday and it's notable because I've letter
- 10:32Speaker 1: rarely goes on sale, So a bunch of my favorites
- 10:34Speaker 1: again in the show notes. Definitely check it off. I
- 10:37Speaker 1: love me a good bargain. And last, but not least,
- 10:41Speaker 1: Watch before the Flood my new thing. I think I've
- 10:44Speaker 1: done it. I've done it every night this week, which
- 10:46Speaker 1: shows what kind of social life I have. I on
- 10:49Speaker 1: weeknights am all about watching documentaries. I'm late to this
- 10:53Speaker 1: party because this documentary came out and I leave twenty sixteen,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but with Earth Day on the horizon, I was searching
- 10:59Speaker 1: something that felt appropriate, so I found Before the Flood. Wow. Basically,
- 11:06Speaker 1: in the documentary, Leonardo DiCaprio sounds the alarm about global
- 11:09Speaker 1: warming and throws out some insane stats. Ready for this,
- 11:13Speaker 1: the North Pole will likely be melted by twenty forty. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 1: it's notts. The whole documentary is not. It's definitely. Definitely
- 11:24Speaker 1: give it a look. And now we have a listener question.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Hi Emily, my name's Brittany. I'm a new listener and
- 11:31Speaker 2: new hurdler, but I'm loving every second of it. I
- 11:35Speaker 2: have a question about being a twelve hour, three to
- 11:42Speaker 2: four shift a week worker and how you would recommend
- 11:46Speaker 2: working out on long shift days where I'm leaving the
- 11:50Speaker 2: house at five point fifteen and not coming home until
- 11:53Speaker 2: maybe seventy eight o'clock in the night. Do you have
- 11:56Speaker 2: any recommendations for how to push forward with my workout
- 12:01Speaker 2: routine and goals despite such a heavy work schedule.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Thanks, Brittany, thank you so much for your question. I'm
- 12:07Speaker 1: actually talking about some themes that are super relevant to it.
- 12:11Speaker 1: In this week's installment of the Weekly Hurdle. Over there,
- 12:15Speaker 1: I'm writing about strategies to navigate those sucky workouts. And
- 12:19Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of the time a sucky
- 12:22Speaker 1: workout happens when we're feeling unmotivated, which can come hand
- 12:26Speaker 1: in hand with working long hours. So I highly recommend
- 12:30Speaker 1: that you peep on over to the show notes and
- 12:32Speaker 1: click to subscribe and read this week's newsletter. However, I
- 12:37Speaker 1: will offer you one tidbit of advice, and that is
- 12:41Speaker 1: that these workouts your regular workout. It doesn't need to
- 12:44Speaker 1: be something that takes you an hour. In fact, you
- 12:47Speaker 1: can indulge in what hurdler Joe Holder loves to call
- 12:52Speaker 1: exercise snacks. So this means if you have fifteen minutes
- 12:57Speaker 1: in the morning before you head out, and fifteen minutes
- 12:59Speaker 1: at night, and maybe of fifteen minutes during your forty
- 13:03Speaker 1: five minute to an hour lunch break, find ways to
- 13:06Speaker 1: move that give you energy that you need to carry
- 13:10Speaker 1: on with the rest of your day. Because I'll tell
- 13:12Speaker 1: you this when you make the time for movement. And
- 13:15Speaker 1: I understand that you might be feeling tired. You're working
- 13:17Speaker 1: hard and your hard work is so appreciated, but when
- 13:21Speaker 1: you're feeling tired, moving your body getting those endorphins can
- 13:25Speaker 1: be such a game changer. So find small breaks within
- 13:30Speaker 1: your day to start adding movement into the mix. You'll
- 13:33Speaker 1: be really grateful for it. And to make it even easier,
- 13:36Speaker 1: think ahead about what these movement breaks might entail. Maybe
- 13:40Speaker 1: that lunch one is literally just going for a walk.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Maybe the evening one is you looking at the on
- 13:46Speaker 1: demand programming that you like to do and selecting which
- 13:49Speaker 1: workout you're going to turn on. By taking the extra
- 13:53Speaker 1: decision making out of it, that's one less hurdle that
- 13:57Speaker 1: you'll approach on your quest to getting active and moving
- 14:01Speaker 1: your body. That's it for this week, y'all. Make sure
- 14:03Speaker 1: you're keeping up with Hurdle over on social media. Again,
- 14:06Speaker 1: it's at Hurdle Podcast. You can also follow along with
- 14:08Speaker 1: the hurdle community in the Secret Hurdler's group on Facebook.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And if I haven't said it enough, make sure you're
- 14:15Speaker 1: subscribed to the Weekly Hurdle newsletter links to do all
- 14:19Speaker 1: of that. As I said in the show notes, appreciate
- 14:22Speaker 1: all of you so much. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you
- 14:26Speaker 1: guys next time.
