- 0:00Speaker 1: I can tell you that Cameron Parker and myself have
- 0:04Speaker 1: meant a little bit. We got a little bit chilly,
- 0:06Speaker 1: as did everybody else in their building. Yeah, not the
- 0:09Speaker 1: best day to have a fire drill. It turned out
- 0:13Speaker 1: to be more than just a drill, but there was
- 0:14Speaker 1: no fire. With that, we say good afternoon and welcome
- 0:18Speaker 1: you to the program here on thirteen hundred the Zooe.
- 0:21Speaker 1: My name is Craig Way. Glad to have you with
- 0:22Speaker 1: us this afternoon. Us includes the producer Cameron D.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Parker.
- 0:26Speaker 3: The D on the birsdy ptificate stands for.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Dallas or in this case delivering the play by play
- 0:33Speaker 1: on Saturday on the LHN SEC Network Plus telecast of
- 0:38Speaker 1: Longhorn Baseball against the Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday. We'll
- 0:46Speaker 1: get to that in a moment, just in case somebody
- 0:50Speaker 1: who's going await a minute. It when the fire, but
- 0:51Speaker 1: it was a real fire drill. There was a water
- 0:55Speaker 1: main pipe burst beneath the building in the parking garage.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Now it's okay, no big deal, except that Cameron's car
- 1:07Speaker 1: and my truck from leave Johnson Ford were both parked
- 1:12Speaker 1: down there along with others and everybody with in the
- 1:15Speaker 1: mad scrambled to move their vehicles. I don't know how
- 1:18Speaker 1: flooded it's going to get down there, but at least
- 1:20Speaker 1: it's all out of that. So so we all had
- 1:23Speaker 1: to go outside and stand around in mid thirties temperature
- 1:27Speaker 1: thirty four to thirty five thirty six degrees depending on
- 1:29Speaker 1: which area, the Greater Austin area, and you just out
- 1:31Speaker 1: there in a sweatshirt, a long sleeve crew neck shirt.
- 1:36Speaker 1: That's that's all you were throwing on. You didn't even
- 1:39Speaker 1: put your coat on. You even bother put your coat on.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's happened a couple of times where
- 1:45Speaker 4: the fire sirens have gone off, and so far, I
- 1:49Speaker 4: don't think we've had an actual fire. Some of us
- 1:52Speaker 4: just been testing, you know, usually at to come in
- 1:55Speaker 4: once a year and you know, verified.
- 1:57Speaker 5: And usually do that.
- 1:58Speaker 4: To do that outside of normal business hours, it's not
- 2:02Speaker 4: very conducive about That happened during a live radio show.
- 2:06Speaker 4: And also I found out how many people in our
- 2:08Speaker 4: building have no idea what time we're on the air,
- 2:09Speaker 4: because what.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Are you doing right now?
- 2:11Speaker 5: Shouldn't it shouldn't it's on two o'clock two to five pm. People.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I actually had somebody come up me and say listen,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and I'm sitting here making notes and going over things,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and they were like, listen, I know you're on the
- 2:21Speaker 1: air right now, but we do have a fire drum.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And I'm like, look like, do I look like I'm
- 2:26Speaker 1: on the air right now? I know we're not on
- 2:28Speaker 1: the airtil it's oh okay, So maybe.
- 2:32Speaker 3: That should be a little bit troubling.
- 2:33Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, but we are here and we are on
- 2:38Speaker 1: the air until five o'clock.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Fire thing.
- 2:40Speaker 1: All right, let's bring up to date on several things. First,
- 2:46Speaker 1: the reason why I mentioned about Cameron and the baseball
- 2:48Speaker 1: matchup with Dartmouth is because Cameron will be on the
- 2:53Speaker 1: call on the LHN slash SEC Network Plus telecasts, Right,
- 2:58Speaker 1: is that the best way to describe it for Texas Baseball?
- 3:02Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, you should know. There have been time
- 3:07Speaker 1: changes for two of the three games, and we thought
- 3:11Speaker 1: this might be coming because of more inclement weather forecast
- 3:17Speaker 1: for the area, mainly Tomorrow night into Saturday. So listen up,
- 3:25Speaker 1: here's what In case you haven't heard, here's the changes
- 3:28Speaker 1: for the series. It is still planned as a three
- 3:32Speaker 1: game weekend series. It is still planned to be played
- 3:36Speaker 1: on three days, Friday, Saturday, Sunday at this time, At
- 3:41Speaker 1: this point, there is not a plan for a double
- 3:44Speaker 1: header on any of the days. Sunday looks like the
- 3:48Speaker 1: best weather day. Temperature could even get into the low
- 3:50Speaker 1: to mid sixties on Sunday. However, I think this was
- 3:54Speaker 1: due to darkness, travel schedule. The game was originally scheduled
- 4:02Speaker 1: for noon, and it is still scheduled to be played
- 4:05Speaker 1: Sunday at noon, which tells me they've got a flight
- 4:08Speaker 1: that evening, probably to get back to Hanover, New Hampshire,
- 4:13Speaker 1: although they probably have to I would guess fly to
- 4:15Speaker 1: Boston maybe if they're on southwestn't going to Manchester, New Hampshire,
- 4:18Speaker 1: then bus in on that something like that, because I
- 4:20Speaker 1: think that's that the Southwest airlines to New England.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Hubs are Providence in Manchester. But I digress.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Anyway, they they probably have to fly home on Sunday evening. Yes, six, Yeah, Oh,
- 4:33Speaker 1: they're on a six o'clock flight. Look at you finding
- 4:35Speaker 1: that out? Okay, all right, yeah, So yeah, Sunday's game
- 4:39Speaker 1: is noon. There will be no doubleheader Sunday. That's the
- 4:42Speaker 1: best weather day. Now you get Friday and Saturday. Friday
- 4:45Speaker 1: is supposed to be six thirty Friday night, Tomorrow night
- 4:49Speaker 1: Saturday two thirty.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Was it originally scheduled.
- 4:51Speaker 5: For two o'clock two o'clock.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Those have now been pulled forward to one one o'clock tomorrow,
- 5:02Speaker 1: one o'clock tomorrow instead of six thirty noon Saturday. So
- 5:09Speaker 1: whatever your tickets say, understand that your Friday ticket now
- 5:12Speaker 1: works for Friday afternoon at one o'clock, and your Saturday
- 5:18Speaker 1: ticket works for noon, and then Sunday is noon as schedule.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So just to let you know that, listen got to
- 5:25Speaker 1: be flexible this time of year. Questionable weather, iffy weather,
- 5:29Speaker 1: things like that. We saw that on Tuesday, tried but
- 5:33Speaker 1: could not even get the game started against Houston because
- 5:37Speaker 1: a really cool weather moving in the front was moving in.
- 5:39Speaker 1: We saw the flags just turn at a ninety degree
- 5:42Speaker 1: angle and really start blowing the other way out of
- 5:44Speaker 1: the north and raining, and it was just miserable.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Nobody would have been happy with that, so they called
- 5:49Speaker 3: it off.
- 5:49Speaker 1: They didn't play Texas Saltball couldn't play on Wednesday at
- 5:53Speaker 1: home against Achron, so neither of those games were able
- 5:56Speaker 1: to be played.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Don't know.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I've been asked, is there the possibility of something being
- 6:03Speaker 1: made up another game possible, but there's no official word
- 6:10Speaker 1: on any of that. So that's where it is right now.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And so again it is one o'clock tomorrow, and yes,
- 6:17Speaker 1: the game will be broadcast here on thirteen under the Zone.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Roger Wallace and Keith Moreland will have the call.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I'll be on a plane with Long Worn Basketball headed
- 6:25Speaker 1: for Columbia South Carolina because of the Saturday night game
- 6:29Speaker 1: between Texas and South Carolina, so that Roger and Keith
- 6:37Speaker 1: have to call tomorrow as well as on Saturday. Like
- 6:40Speaker 1: I said, Cameron will be working. Are you working with
- 6:42Speaker 1: Nathan Thornhill, ty Harrington? Oh, you'll be with the coach, Okay,
- 6:47Speaker 1: all right, So that's on Saturday there with the coach,
- 6:50Speaker 1: all right. So that and so the telecast of that
- 6:56Speaker 1: with Cam and Tye will be on Saturday, and of
- 6:58Speaker 1: course you'll be able to hear both games as well
- 7:02Speaker 1: as the Sunday game. I'll be back for the Sunday
- 7:04Speaker 1: game to join Keith to call that one for you
- 7:06Speaker 1: on Sunday at noon, as the long Ones have a
- 7:10Speaker 1: Saturday night basketball game, and for folks will go wait.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Whoa whoa, whoa, whoa whoa, whoa, whoa whoa. Cameron Parker
- 7:17Speaker 3: is the engineer for Long One men's basketball. What's the deal?
- 7:20Speaker 1: I would say we were able to make a nice
- 7:26Speaker 1: step in substitution so that to make Cam available to
- 7:29Speaker 1: call the game for the telecast the baseball game on Saturday,
- 7:34Speaker 1: and please to have our old friend and former basketball
- 7:37Speaker 1: engineer Mike Purl joined us so he will make the
- 7:40Speaker 1: trip with us. Mike did a couple of games first
- 7:42Speaker 1: last year. I think he's going to do another one
- 7:44Speaker 1: when you're in Greenville, South Carolina with women's basketball for
- 7:47Speaker 1: the SEC Women's Tournament. The men have their regular season
- 7:51Speaker 1: finale at home against Oklahoma. Mike will be with us,
- 7:53Speaker 1: but that one is our engineer, so he'll go with
- 7:54Speaker 1: us tomorrow on that So hopefully that gets everything up
- 7:59Speaker 1: to speed for there. The other programming note to remind
- 8:03Speaker 1: you of is tonight at six o'clock Long Worn Weekly
- 8:07Speaker 1: with Rodney Terry out at Pluckers, the West Campus location.
- 8:10Speaker 1: We're there every Thursday, except when the team gets weathered
- 8:14Speaker 1: in in Oxford, Mississippian can't get back and they have
- 8:17Speaker 1: to go straight to Baton Ruge like they did a
- 8:19Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago, three weeks ago, as time is
- 8:22Speaker 1: beginning to fly. But we will be there tonight with
- 8:28Speaker 1: coach Terry. We take your questions. We talked basketball, and
- 8:32Speaker 1: we always have a special guest. We've had a couple
- 8:34Speaker 1: of coaches on recently, we've ever different players. We have
- 8:38Speaker 1: a player on the night, Trey Johnson, the Long Worn's
- 8:41Speaker 1: Outstanding Freshman, the current SEC Freshman of the Week, where
- 8:47Speaker 1: he is the Freshman the Week for the fourth time
- 8:50Speaker 1: this season. I'm sure he's going to be a freshman
- 8:52Speaker 1: All American when everything's said and done. He's leaning the
- 8:56Speaker 1: SEC in conference scoring per game at just a sh
- 9:00Speaker 1: under twenty points per game. So Trey Johnson will join
- 9:03Speaker 1: us at Pluckers at six. So we encourage you to
- 9:07Speaker 1: come on out, get there early, to get your place,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and you can hear Trey, and you can hear a coach,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and we'll have questions and all that kind of stuff.
- 9:15Speaker 1: That's coming up tonight. But Long Worn Weekly at six
- 9:17Speaker 1: o'clock at Pluckers the West Campus location here in Austin
- 9:21Speaker 1: at twenty two to twenty two real grand that is
- 9:24Speaker 1: at six, all right, We've had a lot of things
- 9:26Speaker 1: to get to on the program. I want to get
- 9:30Speaker 1: to some NBA topics with Cam and gets to get
- 9:33Speaker 1: his thoughts on that. Also some women's basketball and men's
- 9:37Speaker 1: college basketball notes and updates to get you updated on
- 9:42Speaker 1: the long ones place in things. In the four o'clock hour,
- 9:46Speaker 1: our MLB insider Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox
- 9:50Speaker 1: front office joins us there is an actual Major League
- 9:56Speaker 1: Baseball game going on right now. It's a spring training game.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I wish I could pull it up my laptop. It's weird.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I have the MLB package, I have direct TV, but
- 10:05Speaker 1: it doesn't allow me to pull it.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Up on my laptop.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Are you blacked out from it?
- 10:09Speaker 1: Well, it's because they're not at home, but on my
- 10:12Speaker 1: laptop I can because of MLB restrictions or something with that.
- 10:16Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Anyway, it's too complicated. Yeah, yeah, today, So Dodgers and Cups.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yamamoto's pitching for the Dodgers today, so, but anyway, it's
- 10:26Speaker 1: Dodgers and Cubs. But that's the first And remember those
- 10:29Speaker 1: two teams are going to Japan to open the season
- 10:33Speaker 1: on March eighteenth in Tokyo, and the starters both are
- 10:41Speaker 1: natives of Japan. Ammanaga to pitch for the Cubs, Yamamoto
- 10:46Speaker 1: to pitch for the Dodgers. I think that's a really
- 10:47Speaker 1: cool thing, so that they get to get a jump
- 10:51Speaker 1: on the others in terms of that since they have
- 10:53Speaker 1: to open the season early, and I think the teams
- 10:56Speaker 1: are going to have like some exhibition games in Japan
- 10:59Speaker 1: against Japanese major like the Hirosia mccarp and yeah, Yomiuri
- 11:05Speaker 1: Giants and you know the Cheap a Lot Whales and
- 11:09Speaker 1: you know those those teams, your cult swallows, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 1: the Japanese league teams. So they're gonna do that in
- 11:17Speaker 1: addition to playing a couple of games against each other
- 11:20Speaker 1: before they come back. But we'll talk some Major League
- 11:24Speaker 1: baseball with Gene Watson. Uh, we've got, like I said,
- 11:27Speaker 1: college baseball to get to. There's a lot of topics
- 11:30Speaker 1: and of course, as always, as always, we're happy to
- 11:34Speaker 1: have your input on our text line. You need only
- 11:37Speaker 1: text the word Texas follow by your question or comment
- 11:41Speaker 1: to eight one five three zero. So text the word
- 11:44Speaker 1: Texas follow by your question or comment to eight one
- 11:47Speaker 1: five three zero.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Also, we have that talk back number and you're gonna
- 11:53Speaker 1: want to have that talkback number handy as well. We're
- 11:56Speaker 1: gonna tell you about something else coming up a little
- 11:58Speaker 1: later in the program. It is that they're Thursday afternoon.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Happy to be with you here.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I'm thirteen under the Zone.
- 12:06Speaker 6: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 12:09Speaker 6: Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.
- 12:27Speaker 3: It's Thursday afternoon. I'm staying warm.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Got a lot of things to get down to get to,
- 12:36Speaker 1: starting with Victor Wibgnon had done for the season shut.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Down by the Spurs.
- 12:44Speaker 1: So if you are holding tickets as Cameron Parker is
- 12:48Speaker 1: for tonight's game at Moody Center between the San Antonio
- 12:56Speaker 1: Spurs and the Phoenix Suns, you are not going to
- 12:58Speaker 1: get to see Wemby.
- 12:59Speaker 3: No Victor women Yama tonight. They're shutting him down.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Do you ever see those commercials for deep vein thrombosis
- 13:09Speaker 1: or veins are just like throbbing.
- 13:14Speaker 3: He's got that in his right shoulder. The Spurs today.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Said that the condition, it's the form, it's a form
- 13:23Speaker 1: of a blood clot was discovered when when he returned
- 13:30Speaker 1: to San Antonio after the All Star Game, it's typically
- 13:33Speaker 1: treated with a blood thinning medication, so that means you
- 13:39Speaker 1: can't play as a result of that. So it precludes
- 13:41Speaker 1: him from participating in a contact sport like basketball. If
- 13:45Speaker 1: you got blood thinners going on, you don't want to
- 13:47Speaker 1: be out there where you could like be shedding blood.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Happens that way.
- 13:52Speaker 1: So this started, and he said, well, they're just now
- 13:56Speaker 1: finding this out. It really started pretty recently. Started feeling
- 14:00Speaker 1: symptomatic of it recently, but he thought he'd feel better
- 14:04Speaker 1: after two days off following the All Star Game, and
- 14:07Speaker 1: then the symptoms persisted.
- 14:10Speaker 3: He let the club know.
- 14:12Speaker 1: They engaged in a battery of tests and it revealed
- 14:16Speaker 1: the clot. The Spurs say they're optimistic he'll be fully
- 14:21Speaker 1: recovered and ready to go next season. Chris Paul The
- 14:25Speaker 1: quote from him was, it's tough. Tough more than anything,
- 14:27Speaker 1: I think, for all of us knowing how much he
- 14:29Speaker 1: means to our team, but more so knowing how much
- 14:31Speaker 1: he means to the game and how much he loves
- 14:33Speaker 1: to play. He was averaging twenty four points, eleven rebounds,
- 14:36Speaker 1: four assists, four blocks, leading the league three point eight
- 14:40Speaker 1: to be exact in forty six games, but the team
- 14:44Speaker 1: said in the statement that the updates on his condition
- 14:47Speaker 1: would be provided as appropriate. So it's a tough deal
- 14:54Speaker 1: for the Spurs fans, for Victor wibin Yama. We're gonna
- 14:58Speaker 1: hear some comments from Kevin Durant today right with regard
- 15:02Speaker 1: to this matchup and kat returning back home, but this
- 15:05Speaker 1: becomes the headline portunately from the Spurs perspective.
- 15:09Speaker 3: In the NBA perspective, is that Wemby's done for the season.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I was super excited to see Wemby
- 15:14Speaker 4: take on Kevin Durant tonight, Katie's homecoming to Moody Center.
- 15:18Speaker 4: First time playing at Moody Center, obviously, first time playing
- 15:22Speaker 4: I think may have played a preseason game a little
- 15:24Speaker 4: while back at the Irwin Center, but it was going
- 15:27Speaker 4: to be such a spectacle to night and then of
- 15:28Speaker 4: course be able to see Wemby the freak that he is.
- 15:31Speaker 4: This this kind of sucks Craig first and foremost. I
- 15:35Speaker 4: hope it's nothing serious, and judging off of what the
- 15:38Speaker 4: Spurs have said and what Sham said to day on
- 15:40Speaker 4: ESPN that you know, medicine will help take care of this,
- 15:43Speaker 4: rest will take care of this, and he'll be ready
- 15:45Speaker 4: to go come the offseason. There's also a part where
- 15:49Speaker 4: you know, you get to the All Star break. San
- 15:50Speaker 4: Antonio was twenty three and twenty nine. Yes, they made
- 15:53Speaker 4: the darreon Fox trade, but that was more of a
- 15:54Speaker 4: trade for down the road, not this season. You know,
- 15:58Speaker 4: a lot of NBA fans were wondering, Okay, so when
- 16:01Speaker 4: is the Wenby injury gonna come? When is the oh,
- 16:04Speaker 4: we're gonna shut him down because of some you know,
- 16:07Speaker 4: wrist or go load manage and go load management. Well
- 16:10Speaker 4: here we are now, I you know, maybe it is
- 16:14Speaker 4: serious and stuff. But also looking at where they're out
- 16:17Speaker 4: in the standings, Craig, you know they're they're three and
- 16:19Speaker 4: a half games back out of the playing spot. But
- 16:23Speaker 4: the bottom three teams, of course, you know, have the
- 16:25Speaker 4: chance that at the same mod to get the number
- 16:27Speaker 4: one pick. Looking at that, there are eleven games from that,
- 16:31Speaker 4: so you know it'll be tough to make the plan.
- 16:33Speaker 4: It'll be tough to make the bottom three. But it
- 16:36Speaker 4: seems like, you know what, why not just tank possibly
- 16:38Speaker 4: for a better draft pick. Who knows, maybe you do
- 16:40Speaker 4: get a shot at Cooper flag or four, five and six.
- 16:44Speaker 4: But not surprising that this is happening, but hopefully Wenby Uh, well,
- 16:49Speaker 4: you know it's nothing serious because he's going to be
- 16:51Speaker 4: a huge part of this league, and it does sound
- 16:53Speaker 4: like it is truly nothing serious.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Update on Anthony Davis for you, Maverick. He's improving.
- 17:04Speaker 3: It's good. It's getting better.
- 17:05Speaker 1: On that left adductor strain, so making good progress. You
- 17:13Speaker 1: have the reevaluate him in two more weeks. He's going
- 17:17Speaker 1: to be out at least two more weeks. That happened
- 17:21Speaker 1: in the third quarter of his first game with the
- 17:23Speaker 1: Mavericks a couple of weeks ago, and he missed his
- 17:29Speaker 1: first three games as a member of the Mavericks due
- 17:33Speaker 1: to an abdominal strain that he suffered on January twenty eight,
- 17:36Speaker 1: four days before the trade. And one of the things
- 17:39Speaker 1: that's got the Maverick van base all soured. In addition
- 17:45Speaker 1: to the elephant in the room, the biggest thing is
- 17:47Speaker 1: just you know, trading Luka Doncic. But in addition to
- 17:51Speaker 1: that was the knowledge that Mavericks ownership and management knew
- 17:57Speaker 1: that ad was injured, that they knew when they made
- 18:01Speaker 1: the deal. Well, he had already been out of the lineup,
- 18:04Speaker 1: so and now this adductor it's adds. He did not
- 18:08Speaker 1: abductors not it's called adductor strain. He's going to miss
- 18:13Speaker 1: a minimum of ten games, including seven over the next
- 18:17Speaker 1: two weeks. He's played in forty three games, so he's
- 18:22Speaker 1: gonna fall short of the sixty five game minimum to
- 18:26Speaker 1: be eligible for awards like All NBA and Defensive Player
- 18:30Speaker 1: of the Year, those kinds of things. If you're wondering
- 18:34Speaker 1: about their other big guys, Daniel Gafford had that Grade
- 18:37Speaker 1: three mcl spraing Derek Lively at the stress fraction of
- 18:40Speaker 1: the ankle, they're gonna miss probably the majority, if not all,
- 18:46Speaker 1: of the rest of the regular season. So then the
- 18:49Speaker 1: Mavericks went out and signed seven foot Moses Brown to
- 18:53Speaker 1: a ten day deal. Since they have no they've got
- 18:57Speaker 1: quite a quite a glaring yea of anybody to play
- 19:01Speaker 1: the center position right now.
- 19:04Speaker 3: What is your recollection of Moses Brown.
- 19:06Speaker 4: NBA journey man, just out there for some depth, you know,
- 19:09Speaker 4: I will say Mavericks only two games back from that
- 19:12Speaker 4: sixth spot. I think ideally you don't want to be
- 19:14Speaker 4: in the play in because if you're in the play
- 19:16Speaker 4: in and you win, you're either facing OKC in the
- 19:18Speaker 4: first round now who they have beaten, So I don't
- 19:21Speaker 4: think Dallas is you know, much afraid of the Mavericks
- 19:23Speaker 4: or the thunder excuse me, but then you're playing Memphis
- 19:26Speaker 4: in the first round. You also don't have home court advantage,
- 19:28Speaker 4: so they would love to be able to sneak into
- 19:30Speaker 4: the five and six spot, you know, hopeful the Lakers
- 19:32Speaker 4: keep losing. For the Mavericks, the Clippers on a three
- 19:34Speaker 4: game win streak, so it's a tough spot to be
- 19:37Speaker 4: thrusted in that play in, which is likely where they'll
- 19:41Speaker 4: be at considering what two more weeks until all those
- 19:45Speaker 4: guys are reevaluating. It doesn't necessarily mean they're going to
- 19:47Speaker 4: be out for much longer, but doesn't also mean they're
- 19:49Speaker 4: going to be ready to play on March seventh. And
- 19:52Speaker 4: it's a Mavericks team that you need those three guys
- 19:54Speaker 4: such a huge part, especially of course Anthony Davis. They
- 19:57Speaker 4: can you know, they can say healthy. They are scary
- 19:59Speaker 4: playoff team, Greg, But the question always is if can
- 20:03Speaker 4: those guys be on the court at the same time,
- 20:05Speaker 4: And if you're in the playing there's no guarantee you're
- 20:08Speaker 4: going to be able to advance. I mean right now,
- 20:11Speaker 4: they would play the Kings in that first playing game,
- 20:13Speaker 4: which I think is is very winnable, and then they
- 20:16Speaker 4: might have a shot against Golden State. Steph Curry can
- 20:19Speaker 4: drop forty anytime. You got Jimmy Butler and there now,
- 20:21Speaker 4: all of a sudden, Golden State's a little bit scary.
- 20:24Speaker 4: You have one bad night or you know, hey, Anthony
- 20:26Speaker 4: Davis missed that first playing game with aductory injury. Now
- 20:30Speaker 4: you lose your playing Sacramento for a spot at the
- 20:33Speaker 4: at the sorry Golden State for the spot the eighth seed,
- 20:35Speaker 4: and Steph Curry drops forty at you. Jimmy Butler's fighting
- 20:37Speaker 4: people on the team, and all of a sudden you're
- 20:39Speaker 4: at the playoffs. And then there you go, Nico Harrison,
- 20:42Speaker 4: there you go, Dumont, that big trade you wanted to make. Well,
- 20:45Speaker 4: now you're at the playoffs while Luca and the Lakers
- 20:47Speaker 4: are in so a lot of stake here for the Lakers,
- 20:50Speaker 4: for the Mavericks if they can get healthy, because if
- 20:53Speaker 4: they're healthy, Craig, look out. But you know you're running
- 20:55Speaker 4: out of time here and right now the Mavericks eight seed,
- 20:58Speaker 4: a game and a half of missing the plane.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Yeah, did you you didn't see Lakers Hornets last night?
- 21:05Speaker 4: Did that I did not watch. I had friends updating
- 21:09Speaker 4: me about Lucas status. Think he had six turnovers in
- 21:11Speaker 4: the first five minutes or five turnovers in the first
- 21:13Speaker 4: six minutes? Was he one of fourteen one of nine
- 21:18Speaker 4: from three? Missed two big threes down the stretch As
- 21:22Speaker 4: the Charlotte Hornets, who are fourteen and thirty nine now,
- 21:26Speaker 4: defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in Los Angeles.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Lucastill wound up with fourteen points and eleven rebounds. He did,
- 21:32Speaker 1: he did, and but the Lakers, and it wasn't just Luca,
- 21:36Speaker 1: it was the rest of the group. Blew a thirteen
- 21:38Speaker 1: point third quarter lead when and I were watching it,
- 21:42Speaker 1: and in the fourth quarter they were still in position
- 21:44Speaker 1: to win, but they forgot to guard LaMelo Ball, who
- 21:48Speaker 1: hit a giant three and made an unbelievable move to
- 21:51Speaker 1: the basket of with a little finger ball.
- 21:53Speaker 3: It's it really was impressive.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Lebron hit one big three and then the Lakers were
- 22:00Speaker 1: within three and they were inbounding with six seconds to go,
- 22:03Speaker 1: and they inbounded, they didn't even look at Luca.
- 22:06Speaker 3: They went straight to Lebron. He missed a three.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I think they got the rebound and kicked it right
- 22:15Speaker 1: back to Lebron again, who launched another three.
- 22:17Speaker 3: And missed that one, and that was the game. It
- 22:19Speaker 3: was that kind of thing.
- 22:21Speaker 1: So anyway, the Lakers, yes, lost to the Hornets, who
- 22:25Speaker 1: now have won a grand total of fourteen games this season.
- 22:28Speaker 1: One other thing, see what happened to the Bucks Bobby
- 22:32Speaker 1: Portois twenty five game suspension for violating the league's anti
- 22:37Speaker 1: drug policy, so he's out for the vast majority of
- 22:42Speaker 1: the rest of the regular season. He said, well, what
- 22:45Speaker 1: was he taking? He tested positive for the drug tramadol,
- 22:49Speaker 1: which is a medication used to treat severe pain among adults. Listen,
- 22:54Speaker 1: most drugs like stuff like that are used to treat
- 23:00Speaker 1: severe pain. His agent says, was an accident.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Of course, it's an accident.
- 23:07Speaker 5: Quote.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I'm devastating for Bobby right now because he made an
- 23:10Speaker 1: honest mistake and the ramifications of it are incredibly significant.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Bobby unintentionally took a pain medication called tramadol, thinking he
- 23:20Speaker 1: was taking a pain medication called torra dol. Torra Dol
- 23:25Speaker 1: is an approved pain medication that he has used previously,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and that teams and players use for pain and inflammation
- 23:32Speaker 1: at times. Tramadol, however, is not an approved pain medication
- 23:36Speaker 1: and was just recently added to the band's substance list
- 23:39Speaker 1: this past spring. The trama doll pill he took came
- 23:43Speaker 1: from an assistant of his with a valid prescription for
- 23:48Speaker 1: the painkiller, which he mistakenly told Bobby was torre Dol.
- 23:53Speaker 1: This was again an honest mistake that was made because
- 23:56Speaker 1: of the similarity in the names of the drugs and
- 23:58Speaker 1: the fact that they both saw a very similar part.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Bobby was using this anti inflammatory pain reducing medication to
- 24:03Speaker 1: deal with an elbow injury he had this past fall,
- 24:06Speaker 1: and believed he was taking tordohl to alleviate some pain
- 24:09Speaker 1: in preparation for that night's game. He's not going to
- 24:11Speaker 1: assist appeal the suspension. I can believe that that is
- 24:18Speaker 1: an honest mistake. I can believe that. But again, I
- 24:22Speaker 1: think this always always rolls back to the individual, the athlete,
- 24:30Speaker 1: with the never ending question are you absolutely sure of
- 24:33Speaker 1: what you're putting in your body?
- 24:35Speaker 3: Absolutely sure?
- 24:36Speaker 1: Now, it was a quote unquote assistant the game and
- 24:40Speaker 1: that said, hey, it's tordol. Don't want to follow up,
- 24:45Speaker 1: just to make sure, just to make sure, because this
- 24:48Speaker 1: is what you're messing with. Twenty five games is a
- 24:50Speaker 1: lot of money too for him. So I can believe
- 24:55Speaker 1: it was an accident. I can also believe that you
- 24:57Speaker 1: know a little more advance work on that check and
- 25:01Speaker 1: it make absolutely certain.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Of what you're putting in your body.
- 25:06Speaker 4: And not only that, Craig, I mean, this is the
- 25:08Speaker 4: devastating loss for a Bucks team that is in the
- 25:10Speaker 4: playoff front. They're the five seed, they got a game
- 25:13Speaker 4: and a half back from the Pacers. Bobby Portis might
- 25:16Speaker 4: be the third most important player on this team. I
- 25:19Speaker 4: would argue he's even more important than Dame Lillard some
- 25:21Speaker 4: Knights because of his ability to stretch the floor, play defense,
- 25:25Speaker 4: and rebound for twenty five games. Now, now you're out.
- 25:28Speaker 4: And so if the Bucks have a stretch where Giannis
- 25:30Speaker 4: or Dame Lillard misses some games all of a sudden,
- 25:32Speaker 4: Milwaukee's kind of in a tail spin. They can find
- 25:34Speaker 4: themselves in the play in and then you're playing either
- 25:37Speaker 4: at Boston at Cleveland in the first couple of rounds,
- 25:40Speaker 4: or even if you're the sixth seed, you're playing at
- 25:43Speaker 4: the Knicks in the Garden against a very good jilln
- 25:48Speaker 4: Brunson and Anthony Towns type team coach by tips. So
- 25:52Speaker 4: this is you know, this is as bad as it
- 25:54Speaker 4: is for the Mavericks losing Ad and Gafford and Lively
- 25:57Speaker 4: for the Bucks losing Bobby Portis is worst case that
- 26:00Speaker 4: could happen would Bejanni's getting reinjured again. So this is
- 26:02Speaker 4: a real tough look for a bus team that is
- 26:05Speaker 4: entering a pivotal, pivotal offseason depending on how far they
- 26:08Speaker 4: go in the postseason.
- 26:09Speaker 1: If I was Bobby Portos' agent, I think I would
- 26:11Speaker 1: have amended that statement to say Bobby uh unintentionally took
- 26:17Speaker 1: a paigin a medication called tramadol. The pill he took
- 26:23Speaker 1: came from a now ex assistant of his.
- 26:30Speaker 3: You keep that guy on assist.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Like, what would you classify as an ex assistance?
- 26:36Speaker 1: Well, he said it was an assistant. I know, but
- 26:38Speaker 1: what is that like just like that more professional name
- 26:41Speaker 1: for like.
- 26:42Speaker 3: My boy driver and bodyguard, and.
- 26:45Speaker 1: He's my boy Steve. He's not he's not very bright.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and now he's not under my employee anymore.
- 26:51Speaker 4: I wonder, Craig, if this is like, hey, do you
- 26:53Speaker 4: think how how rigorous do you think the testing policy is?
- 26:56Speaker 4: Do you think if I took some tramadall I could
- 26:58Speaker 4: get away with it? Yeah, well why do you try
- 26:59Speaker 4: it didn't work out?
- 27:00Speaker 1: That'd be a gigantic mistake on the part of Portis
- 27:04Speaker 1: if he thought that way. And like I said, I'm
- 27:06Speaker 1: inclined to believe that this was the case. But it's
- 27:09Speaker 1: still an epic fail on Portois's fault for not completely
- 27:14Speaker 1: vetting that medication. That's that's all I say about that.
- 27:19Speaker 1: All right, maybe that's you going inconceivable. I don't know,
- 27:23Speaker 1: but the rest of Inconceibile is next here on AM
- 27:26Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone, Craig Wade, alongside the producer Cameron Parker,
- 27:32Speaker 1: reminders of a couple of things to let you know
- 27:34Speaker 1: the long worn baseball series with Dartmouth. The times for
- 27:38Speaker 1: the Friday and Saturday games have been moved up in
- 27:42Speaker 1: anticipation of inclement weather. So the game tomorrow, which was
- 27:47Speaker 1: scheduled for six thirty, is now going to be one
- 27:51Speaker 1: o'clock tomorrow afternoon, one o'clock tomorrow instead of six thirty,
- 27:57Speaker 1: and Saturday's game has been moved up to noon. It's
- 28:02Speaker 1: a noon start time, of course, airtimes here on the
- 28:04Speaker 1: Zone will be fifteen minutes prior to first pitch, So
- 28:06Speaker 1: tomorrow afternoon it'll be twelve forty five pm with the
- 28:11Speaker 1: airtime one o'clock first pitch, and Roger Wallace and Keith
- 28:15Speaker 1: Moreland will have the call tomorrow and Saturday, as I'll
- 28:18Speaker 1: be on my way to Columbia South Carolina with men's
- 28:21Speaker 1: basketball to get ready for the men's game on Saturday night.
- 28:26Speaker 1: So tomorrow afternoon, twelve forty five airtime one o'clock first pitch,
- 28:30Speaker 1: Texas against Dartmouth. Saturday's game eleven forty five am. It
- 28:34Speaker 1: is a noon first pitch for game two of that
- 28:38Speaker 1: series Texas and Dartmouth.
- 28:40Speaker 3: And again Roger and Keith have the call of that one.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Of course Saturday night here on the Zone as well
- 28:46Speaker 1: as on ninety eight point ONEFM. Cavett Long Worn Men's
- 28:49Speaker 1: basketball Texas at South Carolina's long runs try to continue
- 28:54Speaker 1: the upper trend. They're coming off the winter for Kentucky tour.
- 28:58Speaker 3: That end. We're gonna hear a little bit later on
- 29:01Speaker 3: this hour.
- 29:01Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from Kevin Durant, of course, the former
- 29:05Speaker 1: long Worm, but he's here in town because the Suns
- 29:07Speaker 1: are playing the Spurs tonight at Moody. We'll hear some
- 29:11Speaker 1: about that a little bit later, so excuse me. That'll
- 29:17Speaker 1: be Friday and Saturday. Sunday. The game between Texas and
- 29:23Speaker 1: Dartmouth will have a noon first pitch Sunday, even a
- 29:30Speaker 1: noon first pitch, that was the time that was originally scheduled.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Because Dartmouth has a six o'clock team flight to catch,
- 29:36Speaker 1: so as a result, that game will be played at
- 29:42Speaker 1: its scheduled time of noon on Sunday. So it's Tomorrow
- 29:46Speaker 1: one Saturday at noon, Sunday at noon, it's basketball Saturday
- 29:50Speaker 1: night seven o'clock airtimes seven thirty tip off from Colombia,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and as I mentioned, Sunday at noon for baseball, and
- 30:01Speaker 1: then on Monday night will be Texas women's basketball. They
- 30:05Speaker 1: will be back in actual We're gonna hear from Vick
- 30:07Speaker 1: Schaeffer coming up this hour as well, the long warn
- 30:10Speaker 1: women's head coach of the team that's now up to
- 30:13Speaker 1: number two in the country with their third consecutive win
- 30:19Speaker 1: over a top ten team last Sunday beating LSU and
- 30:25Speaker 1: Notre Dame is now the new number one team in
- 30:28Speaker 1: the country. Michael vopol does a great job covering women's
- 30:32Speaker 1: basketball for ESPN dot com did power rankings Now, these
- 30:37Speaker 1: are different than the actual AP pole, although some mirror
- 30:40Speaker 1: the same. For example, Notre Dame. Notre Dame is number
- 30:43Speaker 1: one in the Power rankings, moved up from number two
- 30:46Speaker 1: to number one. They beat Duke, and they're in line
- 30:53Speaker 1: perhaps to wind up with the number one overall seat
- 30:55Speaker 1: if they continue to go. Texas, like in the AP poll,
- 30:58Speaker 1: is in those power rankingsber two at twenty six and two.
- 31:02Speaker 1: As Michael writes, Texas is playing very well, coming off
- 31:05Speaker 1: three consecutive wins of her top ten teams. But give
- 31:07Speaker 1: credit also to the individual play of sophomore star Addison Booker.
- 31:12Speaker 1: She's led Texas and scoring and rebounding in the past
- 31:14Speaker 1: five games, averaging eighteen and a half points and just
- 31:17Speaker 1: under ten rebounds. USC has number three, moved up three
- 31:21Speaker 1: spots from six to three. UCLA has dropped to number
- 31:26Speaker 1: four from number one, Yukon five, South Carolina dropping from
- 31:30Speaker 1: four to six, and I think the game Cocks are
- 31:32Speaker 1: also number six and the AP rankings as well.
- 31:35Speaker 3: LSU seven.
- 31:38Speaker 1: It's interesting what Michael vopl wrote about LSU said the
- 31:41Speaker 1: Tigers might not mind being a bit under the radar.
- 31:44Speaker 1: There are only two losses are on the road at
- 31:46Speaker 1: South Carolina and Texas. LSU is third in the SEC,
- 31:51Speaker 1: with the teams right behind Kentucky and Alabama still coming
- 31:53Speaker 1: up on the Tigers schedule. LSU remains a team no
- 31:56Speaker 1: one wants to play in the postseason.
- 31:58Speaker 3: I agree.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Ohio State number eight, North Carolina up six spots from
- 32:03Speaker 1: fifteen to nine.
- 32:04Speaker 3: These are in the Power rankings.
- 32:05Speaker 1: NC State is number ten, then it's Kentucky eleven, TCU twelve,
- 32:11Speaker 1: highest ranking they've ever had, most wins tc has ever
- 32:14Speaker 1: had as well. They're really good right now. Duke is thirteen,
- 32:20Speaker 1: Kansas State fourteen. They've had to play without Aoka Lee,
- 32:23Speaker 1: they're outstanding center who has been out since January nineteenth
- 32:26Speaker 1: with a broken bone in her foot. And then Oklahoma's fifteen.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Tennessee is sixteen, so that's the Power sixteen. They're off
- 32:36Speaker 1: of that. Updating the baseball thing for the Dodgers of
- 32:40Speaker 1: Jundro three to nothing lead in the first spring training
- 32:43Speaker 1: game of the season with the Cubs have come back
- 32:45Speaker 1: and really just teed off on Bobby Miller, who struggled
- 32:49Speaker 1: down the stretch of last season. They've scored five runs
- 32:51Speaker 1: and still batting on the top of the third. So
- 32:55Speaker 1: there it is in the Cubs leading by a score
- 32:59Speaker 1: of five to three, that is in the top half
- 33:03Speaker 1: of the third Inningcome all right, let's hear from Kevin Durant.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Some things from kd. First of all, getting an opportunity
- 33:12Speaker 1: to come back and play a regular season game where
- 33:16Speaker 1: he played his college basketball at such a high level,
- 33:18Speaker 1: or any national Player of the Year honors his one
- 33:21Speaker 1: year here in Austin as the Wooden Award winner, then
- 33:24Speaker 1: a spentth Award winner All America, and all of those
- 33:26Speaker 1: kinds of things. And he was asked about if he
- 33:30Speaker 1: could describe his level of excitement to be coming back
- 33:33Speaker 1: and playing in Austin.
- 33:34Speaker 7: Extremely excited, you know, just to come back here and
- 33:37Speaker 7: play a game, or regular season game. I think I
- 33:41Speaker 7: played a preseason game here before, but to play a
- 33:44Speaker 7: regular season game where we need every one of these games,
- 33:47Speaker 7: it should be fun.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Would he tell you met with the Texas team.
- 33:52Speaker 7: I didn't need with him. I went to practice. I
- 33:54Speaker 7: didn't need with him. I can set what's up to
- 33:56Speaker 7: a few of the guys. But it was good to
- 34:00Speaker 7: be around the group. RT has been. They've been working
- 34:04Speaker 7: hard all season, trying to finish the season off right.
- 34:06Speaker 5: So it's good to be around him.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Yeah, And so the follow up question, since he was
- 34:12Speaker 1: talking about Rodney Terry talking about RT, was what makes RT?
- 34:17Speaker 1: What makes Rodney Terry the right fit at Texas.
- 34:20Speaker 7: But he's a people person. He's about relationships. He's about
- 34:23Speaker 7: better relationships not only with the player, but their family
- 34:26Speaker 7: as well. And he understands that this is a major
- 34:30Speaker 7: part of these young men's life, is coming to college.
- 34:32Speaker 7: And so for parents to trust him to help lead
- 34:36Speaker 7: their kids shows the character that he has as a
- 34:40Speaker 7: as a person. And then on the basketball floor, he's
- 34:43Speaker 7: been around you know, all levels, you know, high level
- 34:47Speaker 7: NBA players, he's been in a low major D one schools,
- 34:50Speaker 7: head coach and mid majors, you know, so he's experience
- 34:53Speaker 7: and they can help any kid. And you know so,
- 34:56Speaker 7: But the relationship piece is probably the biggest part.
- 34:58Speaker 5: Now.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Lots of excitement about Trey Johnson, and Trey is gonna
- 35:02Speaker 1: be with us tonight at Pluckers for Long Worn Weekly
- 35:05Speaker 1: with Rodney Terry at six o'clock tonight. If you want
- 35:08Speaker 1: to come out to see Trey Uh, he'll be on
- 35:11Speaker 1: with us for a couple of segments during the program
- 35:13Speaker 1: tonight Pluckers the West Campus location here in Austin tonight,
- 35:19Speaker 1: and and Kevin duran has seen Trey Johnson play has
- 35:25Speaker 1: been very impressed with him. I was asked, is there
- 35:28Speaker 1: any advice he would give to Trey at this point?
- 35:31Speaker 7: It looks like Trey has got to handle you know,
- 35:35Speaker 7: he's conducted himself like a pro already. You could tell
- 35:40Speaker 7: when I was at practice yesterday, just his work has
- 35:42Speaker 7: already at that level of you know, focus that you
- 35:46Speaker 7: know it needs to be at in order for you
- 35:48Speaker 7: to be a great player for a long time. So
- 35:51Speaker 7: just keep doing what he's doing, and you know the game,
- 35:54Speaker 7: He's gonna learn more about the game with more experience.
- 35:57Speaker 7: So you know, in these games, the last few games
- 35:59Speaker 7: of the conference, play is huge, you know, because they're meaningful.
- 36:03Speaker 7: They canna always be probably you know, late game type
- 36:06Speaker 7: of type of games, you know, so you learn the
- 36:08Speaker 7: most about your team and about yourself when you're playing
- 36:10Speaker 7: critical games like that.
- 36:12Speaker 1: There are those who would make the comparisons between Kevin
- 36:18Speaker 1: Durant and Trey Johnson simply in terms of scoring.
- 36:20Speaker 3: There trace of guard, and you know.
- 36:22Speaker 1: He's his game is is a bit different, but the
- 36:25Speaker 1: comparisons are there because of how they can take over.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Game and and score.
- 36:30Speaker 1: So Kevin was asked us he's see any similarities between
- 36:33Speaker 1: his game and Trey Johnson's game.
- 36:35Speaker 7: Probably just the mentality of just wanting to be great
- 36:38Speaker 7: and the work ethic, you know, that will to win.
- 36:45Speaker 7: You know, he can tell us that he got that
- 36:47Speaker 7: determination to go out there and win. He's passionate about
- 36:50Speaker 7: the game of basketball. So yeah, I see some similarities there,
- 36:52Speaker 7: and you know, he's similar to a lot of players
- 36:55Speaker 7: in that regard, but this as approach to the game,
- 36:59Speaker 7: I think I think we're similar in that area.
- 37:01Speaker 3: Okay.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Then he was asked about his time in Austin. There
- 37:05Speaker 1: were some epic games between Texas and Texas A and M.
- 37:10Speaker 1: There were other big games. Texas Tech did a huge
- 37:13Speaker 1: crowd here when he played, and of course on the road.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Never forget at Kansas when he think scored twenty five
- 37:18Speaker 1: points in the first half but turned his ankle and
- 37:21Speaker 1: when the locker room came out, tried to go in
- 37:24Speaker 1: the second half, and the Kansas fans at Allen Field
- 37:26Speaker 1: House gave him a.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Standing ovation tried to go.
- 37:28Speaker 1: You could tell he wasn't quite the same afterword, and
- 37:30Speaker 1: Kansas ended up winning the basketball game. But he was
- 37:33Speaker 1: asked about what if he could pick out a favorite
- 37:36Speaker 1: memory from his time in Austin.
- 37:39Speaker 7: I had so many great memories off the court, but
- 37:42Speaker 7: on the floor, they had to be the Texas A
- 37:46Speaker 7: and M game. I think it might have been my
- 37:49Speaker 7: last game in the Earlin Center.
- 37:54Speaker 2: That was.
- 37:54Speaker 7: Yeah, that game right there stood out the most. Was
- 37:57Speaker 7: Texas A and M.
- 37:58Speaker 5: Was like a thrown on our side.
- 37:59Speaker 7: It was there was a veteran team that was experienced.
- 38:02Speaker 7: We were a young group and they scored one hundred
- 38:05Speaker 7: points on us the first that first game and back
- 38:08Speaker 7: then a hundred points. That's a lot of points in college.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it was.
- 38:13Speaker 1: That was the game he's talking about. Was there his
- 38:15Speaker 1: final game at the Irwin Center? Double overtime winever A
- 38:19Speaker 1: and M. That's the one where he hit the gigantic three.
- 38:21Speaker 1: And I said, there's your National Player of the year
- 38:23Speaker 1: right there, because he and A. C. Law were in
- 38:25Speaker 1: a battle for National Player of the Year honors. And
- 38:29Speaker 1: then what does he remember about playing in front of
- 38:31Speaker 1: the fans at the Irwin Center and in Austin.
- 38:33Speaker 7: I mean, if I mean the fans that came in
- 38:35Speaker 7: every game, you know, it was that was an NBA
- 38:37Speaker 7: like arena, you know, and it was that size. And
- 38:40Speaker 7: I'm coming from high schools that I graduated with twelve people,
- 38:44Speaker 7: you know, and I played in a church auditorium my
- 38:48Speaker 7: whole you know, for most of my high school career.
- 38:51Speaker 7: So a step up from that, you know, there was
- 38:54Speaker 7: a huge step up for me. I felt like I
- 38:56Speaker 7: was playing in the NBA arena, so every game every night,
- 38:58Speaker 7: just being able to walk out here and see the
- 39:00Speaker 7: energy from because it was packed most of the night.
- 39:03Speaker 7: So we see that energy for basketball when it's labeled
- 39:06Speaker 7: a football school.
- 39:07Speaker 5: It was.
- 39:09Speaker 3: It was pretty cool to see.
- 39:10Speaker 7: And you know, so every moment I think and the
- 39:12Speaker 7: drum was pretty was dope to me. And they showed out,
- 39:16Speaker 7: Our fans showed off. I want to say, a Texas
- 39:18Speaker 7: Tech game, Texas and m games, they start camping out
- 39:21Speaker 7: and when I start seeing that, that experience was cool
- 39:24Speaker 7: and the fans really ride around us as we got
- 39:27Speaker 7: later into the season.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Yeah, there it is thoughts from Kevin Durant and it'd
- 39:32Speaker 1: be good to see him back playing in an arena
- 39:35Speaker 1: in Austin again, as he'll be on the floor tonight.
- 39:39Speaker 1: That's an eight thirty tip off, by the way tonight,
- 39:42Speaker 1: So if you come out with the pluckers, still got
- 39:43Speaker 1: plenty of time to get back and watch the game
- 39:45Speaker 1: or watching their pluckers or whatever. I'm planning to be
- 39:47Speaker 1: back home watching the game tonight camera Parker's tickets.
- 39:53Speaker 3: You're going excited, aren't you? Yeah? Okay, all right.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Up next, we're getting from Vick Schaffer, Texas Women's head coach.
- 39:59Speaker 3: When we continue here on thirteen under.
- 40:01Speaker 5: The Zone, we're back.
- 40:07Speaker 6: It's The Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 40:10Speaker 6: and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Hey, it's getting downright, ball me.
- 40:18Speaker 1: It's up to thirty nine degrees thirty nine degrees now,
- 40:22Speaker 1: it's going to fall off here pretty soon. In fact,
- 40:25Speaker 1: by the time we get off the air, it'll be
- 40:27Speaker 1: like probably back around thirty seven or so something like that.
- 40:31Speaker 1: So the temperature is falling off, but at least it's
- 40:33Speaker 1: warmed up a little. But again because of what's happening
- 40:36Speaker 1: with more inclement weather expected, that's why they moved up
- 40:41Speaker 1: the start time in of Mars game. To one o'clock
- 40:44Speaker 1: for Texas baseball against Dartmouth Saturday at noon, and then
- 40:47Speaker 1: Sunday at its originally scheduled time of noon, So one
- 40:50Speaker 1: o'clock noon and noon, and you'll hear all three games
- 40:54Speaker 1: here on the zone. Let's jump back to women's basketball.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Longhorn's head coach Vic Schaefer meeting with the me.
- 41:01Speaker 5: Okay, good afternoon, everybody.
- 41:04Speaker 8: Uh, hope y'all are doing well, staying warm. We've we've had,
- 41:14Speaker 8: I mean, we know what today is. Today's Thursday. I
- 41:16Speaker 8: think we uh, you know, we had had. This is
- 41:19Speaker 8: our first buye uh during the season, and so we
- 41:24Speaker 8: don't play tonight for the first time in conference play
- 41:28Speaker 8: February twentieth, So we we took Monday and Tuesday off.
- 41:33Speaker 5: We came back yesterday.
- 41:34Speaker 8: And practiced and we'll practice skin today and tomorrow morning
- 41:38Speaker 8: and then over the weekend to get ready to go
- 41:41Speaker 8: to Georgia on Monday. Obviously proud of my team, but
- 41:49Speaker 8: work's not done. Lots to play for. Uh, we've got
- 41:53Speaker 8: we've got to really fok us up and continue to
- 41:58Speaker 8: take it one game at a time and get ready
- 42:02Speaker 8: for a really good Georgia team. They've got three really
- 42:04Speaker 8: good guards at the top of their stat sheet, got
- 42:08Speaker 8: a nice five player inside that's their fourth leading scorer.
- 42:11Speaker 3: And so.
- 42:13Speaker 5: We'll have to go in there and play on the
- 42:14Speaker 5: road and play well.
- 42:15Speaker 8: Anytime you go on the road in this league, you're
- 42:19Speaker 8: not ready to play, you won't get beat, you'll get embarrassed.
- 42:21Speaker 8: So we've we've got to be we've got to prepare,
- 42:24Speaker 8: and we've got to go in there and play well.
- 42:26Speaker 8: And so I'm excited to see my kids today and
- 42:31Speaker 8: watching practice and hopefully well we'll have a good, good
- 42:35Speaker 8: day of prep. They've been really good about it all
- 42:38Speaker 8: year long. I think that's how you get through the
- 42:41Speaker 8: gauntlet of the last four games, because they have been
- 42:45Speaker 8: so intentional each day, understanding each team that we had
- 42:50Speaker 8: to go through was unique, brought something different to the table,
- 42:54Speaker 8: and so there were certain things we had to adjust
- 42:57Speaker 8: to and maybe do differently from one game to the next.
- 43:01Speaker 8: And again, that says a lot about this team. So
- 43:06Speaker 8: I'm proud of them. But it's just February twentieth, y'all.
- 43:10Speaker 8: We have a lot, a lot left on the table,
- 43:13Speaker 8: a lot on a plate, a lot to play for.
- 43:16Speaker 5: Thanks coach. If you guys use the Rais Hand feature.
- 43:19Speaker 5: We'll get to questions. Danny, you want to start us off.
- 43:25Speaker 9: Yeah, often when you give your team a break, I'm
- 43:28Speaker 9: sure there's kind of some hesitance here. Well if you're
- 43:31Speaker 9: when the players get back about just kind of how
- 43:33Speaker 9: they're looking practice and stuff like that. But what did
- 43:35Speaker 9: your players show you when they kind of as they
- 43:38Speaker 9: kind of eased off the break you've given them this weekend.
- 43:40Speaker 8: Well, we've only had one day of practice and that
- 43:43Speaker 8: was yesterday, and I'll just say it was a typical
- 43:46Speaker 8: practice after a day or a two day off, and
- 43:48Speaker 8: we'll leave it at that.
- 43:50Speaker 5: So, you know, that's why it makes you to see
- 43:55Speaker 5: them today.
- 43:56Speaker 8: You know, the first day is always a little a
- 43:59Speaker 8: little different, and so we'll get back at it today.
- 44:02Speaker 8: And again, we did a lot of running yesterday as
- 44:06Speaker 8: far as with the ball and you know, up and
- 44:08Speaker 8: down and playing and and so we'll just get them
- 44:13Speaker 8: back a little bit and then we'll get back at
- 44:15Speaker 8: it today.
- 44:17Speaker 9: Now that you had a couple of days to go
- 44:18Speaker 9: over film, what did you like from what you saw
- 44:21Speaker 9: from Justice against LSU And you know she earned herself
- 44:24Speaker 9: some more playing time going forward.
- 44:28Speaker 8: Well, I certainly liked her shot blocking, and I think
- 44:31Speaker 8: she had six rebounds, and so those are all things
- 44:34Speaker 8: that are good. I think again, she's got a you know,
- 44:40Speaker 8: she's got so much, so many things she can get
- 44:43Speaker 8: better at. She just a block out on a free throw,
- 44:47Speaker 8: went one for five or one for six from the field,
- 44:51Speaker 8: and you know, she needs to make some of those shots.
- 44:54Speaker 5: But that won't ever change unless you get in the
- 44:56Speaker 5: gym and work on it.
- 44:58Speaker 8: And so we'll just we'll keep trying and keep encouraging
- 45:03Speaker 8: her because I think she can impact our team and
- 45:06Speaker 8: impact the game in a real positive way, and we
- 45:08Speaker 8: need her to you know, with Amo out and potentially
- 45:13Speaker 8: done for the year, you know, we're just her and Jaquelina.
- 45:17Speaker 8: It's a two day tryout every week before we play somebody.
- 45:21Speaker 5: And obviously you saw down the stretch.
- 45:24Speaker 8: I went with four guards against LSU, and you know,
- 45:28Speaker 8: we still you could.
- 45:30Speaker 5: See both bigs at the same time.
- 45:33Speaker 8: I think Taylor proved the other night that she's capable
- 45:36Speaker 8: of guarding a four player. She did a nice job
- 45:39Speaker 8: Withmorrow and so you could see that combination as well.
- 45:44Speaker 5: But I need Justice to play, you know, I need
- 45:47Speaker 5: her to play.
- 45:47Speaker 8: I need her to to be the player that that
- 45:52Speaker 8: I recruited and make the impact that I felt like
- 45:54Speaker 8: she could make as a freshman. I think the kids
- 45:57Speaker 8: more than capable. And you know, I think she did
- 46:01Speaker 8: some really good things on Sunday. And then there's things
- 46:06Speaker 8: that that you know, I think she can work on
- 46:08Speaker 8: and get better at, and they're not that hard to
- 46:12Speaker 8: get better at. It just takes a little bit of
- 46:14Speaker 8: work and a little bit of focused. So really loved her.
- 46:18Speaker 8: You know, her shot Blox, I think she had two
- 46:20Speaker 8: block shots and six rebounds. She had a great pass
- 46:24Speaker 8: to Taylor, And again, I think that's what the kid
- 46:27Speaker 8: brings to the table. You know, she sees the floor.
- 46:30Speaker 8: She has a really good feel for the game. And uh.
- 46:34Speaker 8: You know, again, I love the kid. I need her
- 46:37Speaker 8: to to make me play her and uh, and so
- 46:41Speaker 8: we'll just keep encouraging her and keep.
- 46:43Speaker 5: Working with her.
- 46:44Speaker 8: And again, I think the kid's got a chance to
- 46:46Speaker 8: be really special.
- 46:48Speaker 5: Thanks Daniel. Let's go, Terry, Terry, go ahead.
- 46:52Speaker 10: That's good afternoon.
- 46:53Speaker 11: So I have an observation I want you to confirm
- 46:59Speaker 11: or just talk about. So after over the last couple
- 47:02Speaker 11: of months, this team has been playing at.
- 47:05Speaker 10: A high level, maybe a level that.
- 47:07Speaker 11: You have never seen before in a team. And you know,
- 47:11Speaker 11: Madison talked about playing free. And then I realized when
- 47:15Speaker 11: I was processing that, well, Madison's playing three, Rory's playing three,
- 47:19Speaker 11: Shaye Holly's playing three, Kyla, whoever you put on the court,
- 47:22Speaker 11: Kaylor Jones, They're all playing their best basketball. Then I realized, well,
- 47:27Speaker 11: wait a second, you know again, it's my observation.
- 47:30Speaker 10: I'm looking over. I'm not in the court, not in
- 47:32Speaker 10: the huddles.
- 47:32Speaker 11: But coach Schaeffer is coaching different, it appears. Is this
- 47:40Speaker 11: something that is just your guys are in to flow
- 47:42Speaker 11: the entire team. You know, they always say the good
- 47:45Speaker 11: and the bad. It's always about leadership. And so I'm thinking, okay,
- 47:49Speaker 11: is did coach do something differently? Or you guys are
- 47:52Speaker 11: just in a moment of a greatness that there's no
- 47:58Speaker 11: answer to it. It's just this is your time time,
- 48:00Speaker 11: and uh, you're gonna run with it.
- 48:04Speaker 8: Well, I uh, I think you know, we've we've got
- 48:10Speaker 8: some older kids that you know, are very mature, and
- 48:18Speaker 8: they they understand, you know, Taylor Jones, shall Olly, they
- 48:22Speaker 8: know this is it for them, you know, and and uh,
- 48:29Speaker 8: and then I'll even throw book in with that group.
- 48:31Speaker 5: I mean, they just they're pros.
- 48:34Speaker 8: I say this all the time, not necessarily pro basketball players,
- 48:38Speaker 8: pro in the workplace. They they bring it every day.
- 48:41Speaker 8: They have a have a routine, they have a workout routine.
- 48:45Speaker 8: They come in and get shots.
- 48:47Speaker 5: Kyla. Kyla's in here in the morning at seven point thirty.
- 48:50Speaker 8: You know, working out uh in the morning before she
- 48:53Speaker 8: ghost class. I just think, you know, when you've got
- 49:00Speaker 8: a nucleus, it's not all of them, it was all
- 49:04Speaker 8: of them, we'd be way better. And that's the thing
- 49:06Speaker 8: that encouraged me about this team. Y'all think we're playing
- 49:09Speaker 8: at this unbelievable level. I look out there and I
- 49:12Speaker 8: see a team that could be so much better. I mean,
- 49:16Speaker 8: I think we can still improve and be so much better.
- 49:21Speaker 8: And that's not to say we're not playing at a
- 49:23Speaker 8: high level. I just think we can be better. But
- 49:27Speaker 8: I just think when you have a nucleus of kids
- 49:31Speaker 8: that come in every day and have a way of.
- 49:33Speaker 5: Doing things, this is what you get. You know.
- 49:38Speaker 8: Shay, Holly, Rory, Harmon Booker, Booking, Rory are in here
- 49:44Speaker 8: every day.
- 49:45Speaker 5: Getting up shot.
- 49:46Speaker 8: Shae is for the most part, Kyla comes in the morning,
- 49:49Speaker 8: Taylor's out working out twenty thirty minutes for practice every day,
- 49:53Speaker 8: getting shots Jordan Lee, shots with Blair, you know, like
- 49:57Speaker 8: Madison does with her every day.
- 50:01Speaker 5: You know, Elena is out there with Rory every morning.
- 50:04Speaker 8: So I just think that when you have kids that
- 50:07Speaker 8: are really bought in, you know, it's not all of them,
- 50:13Speaker 8: but sometimes on a team. Sometimes on a team, y'all,
- 50:22Speaker 8: you have certain players that carry you and the rest
- 50:24Speaker 8: of them are along for the ride. You know, they
- 50:27Speaker 8: don't do what everybody else. You know, they don't do
- 50:30Speaker 8: what the front line players do. But that's why they're
- 50:33Speaker 8: front line. And it's I've seen it so many times.
- 50:38Speaker 8: But you've got to have enough of them, and we do.
- 50:41Speaker 8: And so again we're constantly trying to improve, get better,
- 50:46Speaker 8: watch film grow.
- 50:49Speaker 5: You know. That's the thing with kids today. They don't
- 50:52Speaker 5: want to be uncomfortable. That's just it.
- 50:55Speaker 8: They don't and so, but the only way you grow
- 51:00Speaker 8: is when you're uncomfortable.
- 51:01Speaker 5: The only way you can get better is through failure.
- 51:04Speaker 8: But sometimes they grow up in environments where they're not
- 51:09Speaker 8: allowed to fail, or they don't experience it, or when
- 51:13Speaker 8: they do, they're they're not they don't acknowledge it. And
- 51:16Speaker 8: so it's really hard to grow and improve and get
- 51:20Speaker 8: better in that type of environment. And you know, I
- 51:25Speaker 8: think our kids are are so special. Again, I love
- 51:30Speaker 8: I love that group that's constantly working every day. I
- 51:35Speaker 8: said this yesterday. Sarah Graves brings a value to my
- 51:40Speaker 8: team that's immeasurable and I appreciate her so much. And
- 51:47Speaker 8: so you know, I think each kid has a value.
- 51:51Speaker 8: They bring something to the table, but in my mind,
- 51:54Speaker 8: I think some of them can bring so much more.
- 51:58Speaker 8: But are our veterans in Madison, You know those kids,
- 52:05Speaker 8: they're pretty consistent every day and that's why we're where
- 52:08Speaker 8: we are right now.
- 52:11Speaker 5: Thank you, Thank you. Let's go to Jeff. Go ahead,
- 52:14Speaker 5: jeh Nick.
- 52:18Speaker 11: How important is it to control the small details when
- 52:22Speaker 11: you're building an ELEAD team?
- 52:25Speaker 8: You just can't put a value on it. And that's
- 52:29Speaker 8: what I'm That's what I'm talking about. You know, the
- 52:33Speaker 8: little things. You know all that up and I see
- 52:38Speaker 8: us do so many little things wrong. Free throw blockouts,
- 52:43Speaker 8: filing forty feet from the rim in a two possession
- 52:47Speaker 8: game when the clock's your friend, or taking a quick shot,
- 52:53Speaker 8: or taking a shot that you don't practice taking, so
- 52:56Speaker 8: why are you taking it?
- 52:57Speaker 5: In a game.
- 53:00Speaker 8: You know, I just see it all and you know
- 53:05Speaker 8: it's it's you constantly are coaching. You know, I'm constantly
- 53:10Speaker 8: You've heard me say is I'm constantly coaching against the
- 53:12Speaker 8: ghost and you know, worrying about what somebody might do
- 53:18Speaker 8: or could do, talking about our opponent. And but you know, Jeff,
- 53:24Speaker 8: those little things that's what really separates to me the
- 53:29Speaker 8: good from the great. The great do them and they
- 53:32Speaker 8: understand the value of doing them. They they understand that
- 53:36Speaker 8: coaching a maniac. He's not crazy. He understands I got
- 53:42Speaker 8: to do this better and it ain't that hard, and
- 53:46Speaker 8: it's going to help us win.
- 53:47Speaker 5: It's going to really help us be as good as
- 53:49Speaker 5: we can possibly be.
- 53:51Speaker 8: And I think you know, when you can get them
- 53:54Speaker 8: to understand that and realize that, you know, better chance you.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Got importantly told us that she's really focused on details
- 54:05Speaker 2: off the court.
- 54:06Speaker 10: Do you see her in particular? Does she have a
- 54:08Speaker 10: focus on details on the court as well?
- 54:11Speaker 5: No question, Jordan Lee's focused on everything.
- 54:15Speaker 8: You know, She's been so impactful to our program on
- 54:20Speaker 8: both ends. And you know, again it's a kid that
- 54:25Speaker 8: invests in her game. Y'all heard me say this. The
- 54:27Speaker 8: game's real fair, you're going to get out of it
- 54:29Speaker 8: what you put into it. And that's another kid that's
- 54:33Speaker 8: in every day getting shots up and you know, works
- 54:39Speaker 8: really hard, doesn't take place off guards, understands the importance
- 54:43Speaker 8: of defending. She communicates better than anybody on my team
- 54:49Speaker 8: as a freshman and so, and isn't afraid of the
- 54:54Speaker 8: big moment, you know, that's the thing.
- 54:56Speaker 5: She's She's made some big s Jos's some big games.
- 55:01Speaker 8: Had a big three the other night against LSU, and
- 55:05Speaker 8: she just I don't think for her age the moment
- 55:07Speaker 8: it's never too big for But then in the same breath,
- 55:11Speaker 8: that's why she's a straight a student at the University
- 55:13Speaker 8: of Texas. That's why she's going to be a great
- 55:16Speaker 8: doctor one day. You know, she may even be a
- 55:20Speaker 8: researchers and figures out the cure for cancer. I mean,
- 55:24Speaker 8: she's just she's that elite as a as an individual.
- 55:29Speaker 8: So everything in her life is like that. And again
- 55:34Speaker 8: that's that's that's that's what separates you and gives you
- 55:39Speaker 8: a chance to be elite, gives you a chance to
- 55:41Speaker 8: be great. Lots of good people, lots of good players,
- 55:45Speaker 8: but when you're wanting to separate your separate yourself to
- 55:49Speaker 8: being great and elite. These are the things that you're
- 55:52Speaker 8: that we're talking about. Thanks Jeff, Let's go to Eric.
- 56:00Speaker 12: Kind of piggybacking off of Jeff's question, you're three freshmen
- 56:03Speaker 12: now twenty eight games into the season. Do you still
- 56:06Speaker 12: view them as first year players? You still coach them
- 56:08Speaker 12: like first year players? Are you know now through twenty
- 56:10Speaker 12: eight games, are the expectations raised because they've you know,
- 56:13Speaker 12: Dartner been through a full season.
- 56:15Speaker 8: Yeah, I think you've seen where you know, Preston's playing
- 56:20Speaker 8: a lot more now. But that's a kid too that
- 56:24Speaker 8: when you coach her, she looks you in the eye,
- 56:27Speaker 8: you know, yes, sir, no, sir, yes, yes, ma'am no, ma'am,
- 56:32Speaker 8: Like she's listening, you know, when you coach her and teacher,
- 56:35Speaker 8: she's listening. She wants to understand. But she's progressively gotten
- 56:43Speaker 8: so much better and she's hard to deal with. And
- 56:48Speaker 8: obviously Jordan's kind of been pretty consistent all year and
- 56:52Speaker 8: then Justice, you know, we're trying to get her where
- 56:55Speaker 8: she can be fairly consistent too.
- 56:57Speaker 5: So again it's it's how you practice.
- 57:02Speaker 8: And again, those kids, when you practice every day with
- 57:07Speaker 8: your hair on fire and you're trying to be you know,
- 57:10Speaker 8: like Jordan Le, she don't want to turn the ball over.
- 57:13Speaker 8: And you know, if she didn't think she had a
- 57:15Speaker 8: turnover and somebody puts one in the stat sheet, she's like,
- 57:17Speaker 8: when did I do that?
- 57:19Speaker 5: That's her paying attention to detail.
- 57:21Speaker 8: Like she knows I don't like it when you turn
- 57:23Speaker 8: the ball over, so she don't want to turn the
- 57:25Speaker 8: ball over. And so just think again, those kids are
- 57:29Speaker 8: all you know, some get it sooner than others. You
- 57:34Speaker 8: just want them to get it. And you know, each game,
- 57:39Speaker 8: I think they've grown and matured and learned from their experience,
- 57:44Speaker 8: and I think that's why they're impacting our team right now.
- 57:46Speaker 8: I mean, you think about those kids, they're just freshmen
- 57:51Speaker 8: and they're out there playing big minutes against big teams.
- 57:55Speaker 5: It's pretty special. Eric, let's go to anim Hi. Coach,
- 58:03Speaker 5: you talked about this being Taylor and she's last year.
- 58:06Speaker 5: What are your hopes for them for the end of
- 58:08Speaker 5: the season and then beyond that.
- 58:13Speaker 8: Well, Taylor I think has a chance to get drafted,
- 58:16Speaker 8: and she's certainly gonna have a chance.
- 58:18Speaker 5: To play.
- 58:23Speaker 8: Overseas, but I think she'll have a chance to play
- 58:25Speaker 8: in the league. She's really skilled, very talented, great hands,
- 58:33Speaker 8: She's really good around the rim and can face up
- 58:36Speaker 8: and make the fifteen foot or two. And so I
- 58:39Speaker 8: think she's she's somebody that has a real value in
- 58:43Speaker 8: the league where the league doesn't have a lot of
- 58:45Speaker 8: players like her, Shae Shaye. I hope she'll go into
- 58:52Speaker 8: coaching and join my staff, but I think she's probably
- 58:56Speaker 8: got other ambitions in the business this world.
- 59:01Speaker 5: But she'd be somebody I'd love to have on my
- 59:05Speaker 5: on my staff.
- 59:06Speaker 8: She's she falls in the line of some of my
- 59:09Speaker 8: former players that bring a lot to the table, and
- 59:13Speaker 8: you know, Shae Holly brings a lot to the table
- 59:15Speaker 8: in my mind. And uh, but I may lose that battle,
- 59:21Speaker 8: but she is, uh, you know, she's She's just one.
- 59:26Speaker 8: That's all she's done. She's just a winner. And I
- 59:30Speaker 8: think she's made maybe one b in her life in
- 59:32Speaker 8: the in the school of business here at Texas.
- 59:36Speaker 5: So again elite.
- 59:41Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great way to describe she, Holly. Uh.
- 59:45Speaker 1: As a student athlete, I made lots of bees. Did
- 59:48Speaker 1: you make lots of bees? Bees were okay for me?
- 59:51Speaker 1: You know, I was already with bees. Shae has made
- 59:56Speaker 1: like he said that, perhaps only one. She's always been
- 59:58Speaker 1: in brilliant student and a really good coach ball player. Yeah,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: I could see her possibly being a coach as well,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: but I think she's probably on to other business oriented pursuits.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: All right, we have more coming up here on thirteen
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: to under the Zone.
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: Back to the Craig Way Show.
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: Connect with Craig through the text line by texting Texas
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: to eight one five three zero followed by your message.
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: Standard message and data rates may apply.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Yesterday on the problem we were talking about that meeting
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: between conference commissioners for the Big Ten and the SEC
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: and athletic directors, or as the Athletic described and in
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: its summation today, the Big Ten SEC Intergalactic Dominion Summit
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: was the way they described it, and in their recap
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: of it they get into a little more detail than
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: what we originally read yesterday, for example, and what we
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: were in yesterday was I think ESPN and Sports illustrated.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: But the Athletic, which does a great job of covering
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: college athletics, laid this out on some points. For example,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Number one, both leagues support and talk about the Big
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Ten of the SEC. Both leagues support changing college football
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: playoff seating to get rid of those awkward first round
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: byes for conference champs last season. If the seating had
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: been based on nothing but committee rankings in the new
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: twelve team format, Number one Oregon would add its by
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: then draw on the winner number eight in the anniverses
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Number nine, Boise State, rather than having to immediately face
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: fuming mad Ohio State in a rematch. This could begin
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: changing as soon as next week when the Power to
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: meet with the other FBS commissioners. He said they think
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: it'd be in the league's best entrance interests to preserve
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: buys for the conference champs, but the power to have
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: the ability to overrule anybody else's college football playoff interest anyway.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Also part of the CFP decision making, at least theoretically,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: is Notre Dame avok Weather's that name.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: Again.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: Under the Power twos favorite system, the independent Irish would
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: be eligible for buys, and last year would have been
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: a NIU lost away from getting one. That's one major point.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: The other major point is the possibility this is something
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I haven't heard, but I can't say as I'm surprised
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: to hear this college football playoff wait for it play
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: in games alongside or instead of conference championships, as has
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: been discussed. Both leagues aren't looking into this in case
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: the CFP expands, and then they go lol in case
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: because I think everybody's expecting to expand. And if these
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: leagues decide to grant themselves multiple automatic bids each and
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: again they go lmao. If they decide to grant themselves
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: automatic bids, those bids could then be on the line
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: in games like a Big ten number three versus the
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: number six showdown the day before selection Sunday. They said, also,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: let's get silly quote. The SEC has discussed a more
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: radical idea four play in games matching number one and
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: number eight, number four, number five, number two, number seven,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: number three, number six South Carolina and iking taxes out
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: of the playoff before it even begins. Right, Well, I
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: assume this would mean for SEC teams taking autobids and
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: then Texas making it. And is that large anyway? Point
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: number three sing along if you know the words. The
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: SEC is moving closer to a nine game schedule. We've
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: been hearing this for a while, so we'll see. Automatic
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: bids could diminish concerns about losses overly damaging contenders, which
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: will mainly be a major storyline whenever Alabama has damaging losses.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: And number four no annual Big ten SEC challenge just yet,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: heartbreakingly natural rivals you see and Mississippi State have yet
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: to meet in football. And five finally, something that relates
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: to what has ironically been college sports most urgent matter
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: for like one hundred and seventy years now. Without collective bargaining,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: there's no way to actually wrangle transfers. Power two hunting
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: for now more on this issue, it says later. So anyway,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: that's that's a list that they did on that. They
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: said in response, I think the MAC and Conference USA
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: should meet with each other then start issuing orders about
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: who they think can and can't make the playoff.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Yeah, good luck with that. So there we go.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: It'll be interesting to see how this goes if indeed
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: this comes up over the next couple of weeks there
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: that they think could happen in the coming days and
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: weeks about changes to the college football playoff structure. All right,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: we'll be back to wrap up Power number two here
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: on the thirteen hundred. This is glad to have you
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: with us here on this Thursday afternoon. All right, programming
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: reminders for you. First of all, Longhorn Weekly with Rodney
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Terry coming away tonight.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: That will be at six o'clock.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: So it's coming up a couple hours from now at
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Pluckers at the West Campus location. There at twenty two
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: twenty two Rio Grant. Now, as always, we invite you
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: to come out and you know, talk some basketball. You know,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: you can submit questions there for coach Terry. We always
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: you know, get to those and we'll do that. So
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: that's with Rodney Terry at six o'clock. Oh, did I
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: mention that Trey Johnson's going to be there. That's right
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: tonight the long Horn's outstanding freshman, who is, by the way,
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: in the midst of his fourth SEC Freshman of the
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Week honor, will be with us as well. So Trey
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Johnson will be there with us tonight. I had a
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: career high thirty two points in the Winter Kentucky last Saturday,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: so very cool. So that'll be tonight at six o'clock
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: and Pluckers the West Campus location. By the way, the
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: Longhorn basketball team, and I mentioned this earlier, but it
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: does bear repeating.
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: If you're one of those people, and I'm one of
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: quote unquote those people who.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: Follows nerdically to coin a word, what's going on with
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: other quote unquote bubble teams, positive bubble bubble in, negative
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: bubble bubble out teams as it relates not only to
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: those teams possibly being there for the NCAA Basketball Tournament
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: next month with selection Sunday less than a month away,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: but also as it relates to the Longhorns. So I
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: guess it's a college basketball version of scoreboard watching, if
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: you will, like in baseball or the NFL when they're
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: trying to keep up with stuff. Of course, the NFL
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: has kind of remedied that with what they've done in
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: recent years with the shutting down, if you will, of
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: being able to scoreboard watch because they start on that
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: last week of the season, they'll start all of the
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: games at the same time. Now baseball does it as
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: well on the last day, but there's a lot of
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: scoreboard watching that takes place in the run up in
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: the days to the final day of the regular season. Well,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: with regard to college basketball, the scoreboard watching really begins
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: during the month of February, and here we are twenty
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: days into the month and there's a lot of that
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: in terms of not necessarily just scoreboard watching itself, but
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: bubble watching. Last night, my wife and I sat down
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: and we watched a lot of college basketball. We watched
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: my alma mater in North Texas, who have a good year.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: They're nineteen and six. They're still chasing Memphis in the
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: American Conference standings, and to be honest, North Texas I
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: have to win the tournament in Fort Worth to get
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: into the field of sixty eight, even though Jay Bill
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: has had them I think ranked fifty fifth amongst his
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: top sixty eight teams in the country. But as we know,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: the top sixty eight teams don't make the sixty eight
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: team NCAA tournament field. We know that because of the
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: automatic bids. With thirty four automatic bids going out the
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: thirty four conference winners, that leaves thirty four at large
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: bids to be awarded. So you know, and in that league,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: the American probably only the tournament chion. Memphis will probably
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: would probably get in if they don't win the tournament.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: I North Texas should win the conference tournament, the Memphis
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: would probably get in as an at large. But anyway,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: so we watched some of that, but mainly we were
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: watching games that from the periphery could affect Texas. First
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: of all, little more than just the periphery. Auburn and Arkansas.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: And if you were a Longhorn fan, and I said
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: this the other day when Arkansas lost to Texas A
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: and M and when Oklahoma lost at home to LSU
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: kind of a devastating loss there in terms of at
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: large NCAA tournament hopes, I said, if you're a diet
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: in the wool Longhorn fan, you don't need to be
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: prided to rut against Arkansas to Oklahoma. In fact, in fact,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: if either of those two and this goes for Texas,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: A and M clearly as well would help Texas by
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: winning a game, you probably would have to be coaxed
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: into rooting for one of those. Now, it didn't matter
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: with Arkansas and A and M last week. You know
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: one of them was going to win and one of
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: them is going to lose. The one that the thing
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: that would benefit Texas the most would would be A
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: and M beating Arkansas, which they did. And then Texas
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: fans got to be happy because A and M lost
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: to Mississippi State in Startville the other night. But A
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: and M's fortunes down the stretch of the regular season
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: are not really going to have much of anything to
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: do with with the Longhorns fortune. The two split their
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: games during the year, and in fact, if A and
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: M is doing well, that really bumps Texas a little
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: bit in the computer and helps out with the net
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: rankings and all that stuff. So all of that might matter. However,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: when we're dialing into the bubble, which doesn't include A
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: and M. Clearly they you know, even I think Joe
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: Lenaradi had them as a two seed this week before
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: they lost to Misissippi's team. They may fall off of
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: that a little bit, but they're still going to be
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: probably a three seed or a four seed or something
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: like that, depending on how they finish up. So if
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: we're dialing into the bubble, we're looking clearly at Arkansas,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: and we're looking clearly at Oklahoma, and we're looking at
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: some other teams that could be effected. I give you
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: another example, Iowa. Iowa probably would have to really get
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: on its horse and do something to get into the
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: real heavy duty conversation. However, it did help Texas that
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Iowa lost to Oregon. Last night, Orgon's going to be
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: in the field. I think they were ranked eighteenth or
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: something like that. Their net ranking is good. They're kind
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: of in the middle of the pack of the Big ten,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: but they're going to get in the NCAA tournament. So
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: what they do is really not going to affect Texas.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: But Oregon beating Iowa helps because it hands the Hawkeyes
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: another loss.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: Same story with Arkansas.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Now, I completely get and agree with Joe Lenardi's projections
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: when he says last night, it was interesting to hear
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: this as the telecast was going on and Dave Pash
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: was doing the play by play on that, and he's
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: working with Jay Williams, and they pulled up Lenardi's projection
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: and how the computer formula figures into percentage possibility. It's
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: more than just if they do this, they're in or
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: out or whatever, push into the bubble or whatever. Joe
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: Lonardi had Arkansas currently at a thirty one percent chance
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: to get into the NCAA Tournament. If they were to
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: have beaten Auburn, the number one team in the country,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: that percentage chance would have gone up to fifty two percent.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Now that would affect Texas even more so. Than normal,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: even though the two were scheduled to meet again next week,
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: but it will be in Fayabel. However, a loss would
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: only drop it two percentage points because it was the
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: number one team in the country, so they would only
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: drop the two twenty nine percent. But at this point,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: if you're a Texas fan, you'll take every little bit
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: of help you can get. So Arkansas losing Auburn, and
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: they did push Auburn, but they only had I think
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: one field goal in the final four or five minutes
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: of the ball game and a couple of free throws
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: in Auburn was able to finally keep them at arms
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: length and win the game by seven points. So that
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: definitely did not hurt Texas. Auburn losing Oklahoma getting smacked
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: by Florida the other night did not hurt Texas at all.
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: It was in a similar situation.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Auburn losing to a really good, top five ranked team
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: like Florida probably wasn't going to hurt them that much,
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: but it helps Texas in terms of that.
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: So anyway, those are the.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Kinds of bubblicious topics that you pay attention to you're
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: following the other games. Rodney Terry was asked this on
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: that media zoom earlier this week and he was asked
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: if he or does he have a staff member pay
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: attention to that, and he said, well, you're aware of
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: it going on, but you know, he tells his guys
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: live where your feet are and you take care of
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: the here and now that's true. I can also tell
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: you with the Gas they have on staff a graduate
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: assistant and assistant coaches. They're all fully aware of what
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: else is going on around in college basketball.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: They're keeping track of that, all right.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: So there's some thoughts in college basketball. And again, Longhorn
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: Weekly coming your way tonight and that'll be at six
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: o'clock at Plucker's the West Campus location here in Austin,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: and we're going to talk MLB baseball. Are you aware
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: that Major League Baseball Spring training games actually began today
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: and they get going in full force tomorrow. Will visit
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: with Gene Watson our MLB inside from the Chicago White
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: Sox front office.
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: When we continue, I'm thirteen under the zone.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: Hey, they are playing spring training baseball out in Arizona,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Dodgers and Cubs today. There's gonna be a full schedule
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: tomorrow and if we're talking baseball. It means we're talking
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: with our MLB inside it From the Chicago White Sox
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: front office, that is Gene Watson. Hey, listen, it's Arizona.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: It's always good weather for baseball, right, Yeah.
- 1:15:17Speaker 5: You know it's been.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: There have been cool mornings, but for the most part,
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: it's been really good and the players are all very
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: excited and it's actually gone by pretty quick at this point.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: All right, I want to get your thoughts on several
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: different things.
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: First of all, we talked a lot about.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: The spending that not only the Dodgers but other teams
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: that had and Rob Manfred came out this week or
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: late last week and said he didn't see a real problem.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: They were doing it within the rules of the game,
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: but he could understand the angst of some of the
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: fans of some of the other teams with regard to that.
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: He had that, as he called him, conflicting feelings.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: But the players, and I know you're around the players
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: all the time, they say they really don't have a
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: big problem. Of course, you would expect them because the
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: player are gonna get the money. For example, Brent Rooker
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: of the A's said quote teams spending money is never
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: bad for baseball and never bad for players ever in
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: any situation. That was one of the things he had said,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: and a couple other guys have said it as well.
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: You know, Manfred said.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: His quote was the Dodgers had gone out and done
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: everything possible, always within the rules that currently exist, to
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: put the best possible team on the field, and that's
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: a great thing for the game. That type of competitive
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: spirit is what people want to see. All of that
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: is true, but also I know there's the concern for
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: fans about teams that might be left behind and that
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: sort of thing. Have you found out early in your
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: time out of Arizona that that while it might have
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: been a topic of conversation, is going to be something
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: that's probably going to be on down the road Geno
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: after the CBA expires in twenty twenty six.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: Craig, what I think it comes down to mostly is
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: that you know, every year in October there's a winner
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: and there's a loser, and the teams that win want
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: to try to win again, and the teams that lose.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: Where they are as an organization really dictates the type
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: of winner that they're going to have as to how
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: close they feel they are to getting into that upper
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: tier of players. And when you talk about last year,
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: I mean, look how difficult it was for the Dodgers
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: to just beat the Padres, and you've got the Phillies
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: in the National League. And when you look at the
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: Yankees and what the Astros had done over the last
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: seven playoff series, you know, the Yankees pushed in financially
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: to try to build a team that would be the
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Houston Astros, and they did.
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: And so it's really.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: More about the halves and the have nots and those
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: ten twelve fourteen teams that really think we have a
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: legitimate shot to win a World Series and the others
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: that think like ourselves, that are in a rebuild at
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: this point.
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: And so.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: I don't think that you can say that the owners
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: have never spent.
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: What has changed is that these.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: Ownership groups are now more they're larger groups that have
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: you know, like the Dodgers owners have tons and billions
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: and billions of dollars, and so they're they're willing to
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: supersede what the luxury tax or the competitive balanced taxes
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: may be to build out a world championship team. And
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: I think the Dodgers personally right now are looking at
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: it like we have a chance to win multiple world championships.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: But I do believe that you have to have and
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: you have the have nots, and the have nots are
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: kind of saying, you know what, this isn't our time.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: Let's continue to build within the draft, build within international signings,
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: and then when we get to that opportunity to have
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: a chance to win, we take advantage at that point.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Here's something I've never asked you before, but I started
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: thinking about this the other day because Cameron and I
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: were talking about the fact that ESPN did a thing
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: where they ranked the thirty teams coming out of the
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: out of the free agency period and in the spring
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: training and you know what they're They're over under on
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: wins probably would be.
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: And at the top they had the Dodgers.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: But the ESPN bet said that while there's still if
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: you're going to bet on a team to win, then
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: they would be the one to bet. However, they quickly
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: add that they're still not the field, and you would
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: still take the field even as good as the Dodgers are,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: you would still take the field to do this, And
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: they offer up as evidence the fact there has not
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: been a repeat World Series winner since the Yankees in
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: ninety nine.
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: And two thousand.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: So my question to you was going to be, why
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: do you think there has not been a repeat World
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Series winner when we are in a period, as you
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: so eloquently stated, of haves and have nots, Why has
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: there not been a back to back World Series champion
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: in more than twenty years twenty five years going on?
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: I would tell you, just from our twenty fourteen fifteen team,
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: a lot of people will know you that had we
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: won in twenty and fourteen, we wouldn't have won in
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: twenty and fifteen. And I think most of it has
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: to do with just managing the success of it. You
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: don't you know your players, You have the parade, and
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: you typically the season ends and your players go home,
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: they take a small trip with their family, and then
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: they're in the weight room and in the cages on
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: the mounds working out. When you win a World Series
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: and you have the parade, the distractions that come to
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: your twenty six man roster with winning are immense. And
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: you're talking about all the national media spots, all the
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: shows traveling all over the country, and you look up
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: on January fifteenth, and you're just ready to go to
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: work and spring training is a month away. And the
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: other thing is that you don't really stick up on
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: anybody in April and may I mean you have a
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: bullseye on your back from day one, and so there
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: comes a lot of pressure with that. Managing success is
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: probably one of the toughest things to do, especially in baseball.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: But I think we've got a season this year where
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: you've got three really talented teams in the National League
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: and you've got five or six really talented teams in
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: the American League.
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: And comes to lie.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: I think the incentive for those organizations to improve their
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: Major league teams is going to be greater. And I
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: think we're in line for a great playoffs in twenty
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: twenty five.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: Visiting Regene Watson, our MLB insider, talking some baseball, you
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: brought up the Astros. I want to get your thoughts
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: on a couple of things we mentioned this last week.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: Jose Al Twovey said he was willing to move from
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: second base to left field if it meant bringing back
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: Alex Bregman.
- 1:21:40Speaker 7: Well.
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: Bragman, of course, has signed with the Red Sox, and
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: Houston did reach an agreement this week on a minor
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: league deal with Brendan Rodgers second base been third player
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: selected overall, one spot behind Bragman in the twenty fifteen
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: draft as well, So there was that. And then on
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: top of that, uh you Regman, uh talking about this
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: whole business, because there's been a lot of conversation about
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: Raffaeld Devers and Gregman and who's going to play third base,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: and and that Devers has made his position on it
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: quite clear. Uh, but Bregman says, hey, I'll go, I'll
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: go anywhere. I mean, I'll play anywhere, doesn't it doesn't
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: matter me. He said, I'm excited to be is his teammate.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: Are are are you expecting to see Bregman play a
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: different position? And and uh in in Alex core wanting
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: to keep Raffaeld Devers happy, keeping him on third base.
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: For a little bit maybe, And you know, and Alex
- 1:22:37Speaker 5: is that way. I mean, my son.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: Played against Alex in high school. And he's a tremendous
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: team guy. And and while it's a huge loss for
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: the Astros that he's gone, not only in the community
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: and in the clubhouse and on the field, just what
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: a great person Alex Regman is what I think that
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: a lot of the decision that went into Reregman not
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: being back with Houston is they feel like they made
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: a fair offer and they have camp Smith, one of
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: the top rated prospects in baseball waiting in the wings,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: and so that type of years of commitment when you
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: are where they are after this incredible run, probably makes
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: the most sense for them. But I think when you
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: look at the situation in Boston, you know, Devers is
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: one of the arguably you know, stat cast, analytics, everything
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: you want to the eye test is one of the
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: more lesser defensive third basin of the game, and Alex
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: Bregman' is a gold clove third basement. So I think
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: that there will come a line in the stand where
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: the Boston Red Sox to do what they think is
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: best for them to.
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: Win a World championship.
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: But for the meantime, I think Alex Bregan is a
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: team player and he's going to do whatever he has
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: to do to help him win games.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: There are trivals.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: The Yankees have agreed on a two year contract EXTENSI
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: with Aaron Boone. It's so interesting, isn't it, Gino. Aaron
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: Boone's name early to mid last season was one of
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: the ones. It seems like we always hear this with
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: the Yankees every year about hot seat for the manager,
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: hot seat for the manager, and the Yankees really turn
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: it on and get to the World Series. And now
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: the Yankees have agreed on a two year contract extension
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: to go through twenty twenty seven.
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: They made that announcement today.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: About your thoughts on Aaron Boone's place and what he's
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: done with the Yankees, I don't.
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: Think Aaron has ever really worried about.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: I think anybody that takes that job, and you know,
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: I've known Brian Cashman for twenty six years, and even
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: Brian when he took that job, I think they know
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: what comes with the seat. And I think Aaron Boone
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: has known all along what comes with the chair, but
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: I don't think he's ever worried about it. I mean,
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: Aaron is a tremendous baseball man, He's a great leader.
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: He knows what comes with the territories.
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: I think we all know that it doesn't really change
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: that much sentiment within the eyes of Yankee.
- 1:24:49Speaker 5: Fans, good or bad.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: I mean, there's always going to be pressure with that
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: seat if you had a ten year deal. And so
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: I just think it's a great commitment to Aaron and
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: the Yankees have got great club and they're going to
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: go out and play very good baseball this season and beyond.
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: All.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: Right, now, this is this is a little bit, just
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: a tiny little bit off topic. But going across town
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: to the Mets, there was a story today. I don't
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: know if you saw the video of it. So here's
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: One Soto who really wanted to wear number twenty two.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: It just so happened that the guy with the New
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: York Mets was wearing twenty two is none other than
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: Brett Batty, the former Lake Travis Cavalier, and baby said.
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you could have it. It's okay, you could have it.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: So One Soto takes him outside today and shows that
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: we bought him a brand new Chevy Tahoe. He's got
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: this beautiful suv just as a thank you. Now, you know,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: I understand things are relative. He signed a seven, one
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: hundred and sixty five million dollar contract, but it was
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: still a nice gesture. And we saw the deal. What
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: was it where Otani gave up for Joe Kelly. I
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: guess he bought his wife a Porsche. I think last year.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: I mean so players, Baseball players are pretty generous with
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: one another when it comes to such things, aren't.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: They've seen great things like this. And the one thing
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: that we always when we're evaluating players, especially young players,
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: is the first thing we evaluate is what kind of
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: teammate they are. I have never understood the number thing
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: I've never understood, you know the importance of digit. I
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: think when you're on the field, you know your ability
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: and the things you do on the field or what
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: matter the most. But this was an opportunity for Brett
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: Bady to show one so to what kind of teammate
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: he is and vice versa, and that can create some
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: great centers you within the clubhouse. They have a lot
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: of fun with it and you find out who guys
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: are as teammates and and Brett certainly got the better
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: end of that deal. But I've seen a lot of
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: really really good gifts like this. They're always fun to watch.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: You've also seen over the years, having you because you
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: worked in a major league clubhouse in your early and
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: upcoming days, you've seen how players would take care of
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: the home clubhouse manager. Visiting clubhouse manager. Keith Morland always
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: tells the story about how when he went to a
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: Dodger stadium there was always a let's just say, there
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: was a bottle of the beverage that he enjoyed that
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: was in his locker when he got there every time.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: I mean, the stories go on and on about this.
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: And I know you remember the late great Joe Maco
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: and all of the great clubhouse people with the Rangers
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: and how they would how they would take care of
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: both home and visiting teams coming in.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: Well, I can tell you I wouldn't be in baseball
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: today if it wasn't for Bobby with Kenny rogers Field
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: pal Merrow, because when I moved home in nineteen ninety three,
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: they helped me start a small, fifteen year old select
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: program where I didn't have to charge the payer players
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: to pay. And you know, we went forty seven and
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: thirteen and the Astros called me for a scouting job
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: from there. And so I've seen the residual of the
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: kindness of players. And you know the great thing when
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: they go on the road and they buy the rookies
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: the suits, they go down to a men's warehouse and
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: by the suit, so there are a lot of things
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: like that behind the scenes that take place. You know,
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: Nolan Ryan was incredibly kind to me in the four
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: years we were together, and so it's something that you
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: cherish for the rest of your life, for sure.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: There's one other thing I want to ask you about,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: and this was when I was reading these computerized projections
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: on what a ESPN called their stock Watch. They ranked
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: all thirty Major League teams and the Astros at six
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: and the Rangers at seven. And what they do is
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: they have two things, expectation and reality. And what they
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: wrote about the Rangers was expectation big bounce back and
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: this sounds similar to some of the things you've said reality.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: After winning it All in twenty twenty three, the Rangers
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: entered last season with the Hall of Fame injured list,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: at least on the pitching side, and the health outlook
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: never really got better. The lineup regressed in the wrong
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: way and the result was the season that began with
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: the ring ceremony and then with a sub five hundred
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: third place finish. With Texas just behind Houston in this
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: pecking order, things are looking up still. The Rangers need
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: Jacob de Grom to hold up Kumar Rocker and Jack
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: Lder to develop them more than anything, though, I have
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: to figure out a bullpen mix with a lot of
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: possibilities and few clear cut roles. Do you see that
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: as being one of the biggest question marks for the Rangers.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: Well, let me just say this, ten, twelve, and fourteen
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: for Bruce Boche, he knows what bounced back years look like.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: I really think this is one of the sleeping giants
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: in baseball. I was talking to Dayton Moore, the senior
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: advisor the general manager this morning, and I told him,
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: you know, I haven't really looked at you guys, but
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: in looking at you guys, this team has a chance
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: to be sneaky good this year. And they their minor
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: league system is kind of in a stage of they're very,
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: very good at the high A, Double A level, with
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: a little bit of mix at the Triple A level.
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: So they've got the pieces now to go out and
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: make the trades to improve this club in July. But
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: this is a very talented baseball team, and you've got
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: Jack Ladder of Kumar Rocker, They're going to have an
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: impact in it this year. Jacob Dugron are obviously one
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: of the best pitchers in the game, of baseball, and
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: they have a very motivated roster. I don't think people
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: are talking about the Texas Rangers enough for twenty twenty five.
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: He's Gene Watson.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: He's our MLB insider with Chicago White Sox joints this
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: weekly to talk about the big league game, which is
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: drawing closer. Like we said, Dodgers and Cubs on their
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: way today. Everybody's getting into the act this weekend, Gino,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: I appreciate the time.
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: Thanks so much. We'll look forward to doing it again
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: next week.
- 1:30:29Speaker 5: All right, Craig ke here, thanks so much.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: All right, that is Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox.
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: We've got more coming up as we continue here on
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: this Thursday afternoon.
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: Here on thirteen hundred the.
- 1:30:39Speaker 6: Zone, it's the Craig Way Show with a voice of
- 1:30:48Speaker 6: the Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcast there.
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: Craig Way, all right, thanks again to Gene Watson, joined
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: us to talk Major League Baseball as Gino does every week.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: Let's shift back to women's basketball. Now, you heard some
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: from Long Warren's head coach Vic Shaffer last hour. Let's
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: here of the conclusion of that some more with the
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Texas head coach for the women's basketball team, Big Shaffer.
- 1:31:10Speaker 13: So much emotion these last couple of weeks, and now
- 1:31:13Speaker 13: you get a little break to exhale. But college basketball,
- 1:31:16Speaker 13: we love to look to the future. We love to
- 1:31:17Speaker 13: look to the tournament, the projections, all that. How do
- 1:31:20Speaker 13: you kind of keep your your team in line with
- 1:31:22Speaker 13: the with the now?
- 1:31:25Speaker 8: Yeah, I just like I said, you just got to
- 1:31:28Speaker 8: keep your head down and keep grinding. You know, you
- 1:31:31Speaker 8: can't get too far ahead. You know, we've got a
- 1:31:35Speaker 8: three game season right now, and we've just we've got
- 1:31:39Speaker 8: to bear down and focus because two of them are
- 1:31:42Speaker 8: on the road. Our next two games are on the road,
- 1:31:44Speaker 8: and it won't be easy, and so we've got to
- 1:31:47Speaker 8: really really lock in and focus on what it's going
- 1:31:52Speaker 8: to take to win and be on the road and win.
- 1:31:56Speaker 5: And so.
- 1:31:59Speaker 8: You know, with this group, you know, they know me,
- 1:32:02Speaker 8: and they know I'm I'm not going to allow them
- 1:32:05Speaker 8: to be getting ahead of himself. So I know, you
- 1:32:10Speaker 8: guys and other people around you know, the country and
- 1:32:14Speaker 8: friends and relatives want to talk about all the other
- 1:32:18Speaker 8: stuff that really ain't that important right now in February twentieth,
- 1:32:22Speaker 8: you know what's most important today is our practice.
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: That's it. Can we get one percent better today and
- 1:32:30Speaker 5: that's it.
- 1:32:31Speaker 8: We just need to keep keep our head down and
- 1:32:33Speaker 8: keep working and you know, everything will take care of itself.
- 1:32:38Speaker 8: But you work so hard to get yourself in this position,
- 1:32:42Speaker 8: and we got to finish the deal.
- 1:32:46Speaker 14: I guess a little off topic, but when you have
- 1:32:49Speaker 14: a player excuse me, like three who can still play
- 1:32:52Speaker 14: kind of at home on Monday, how do you handle
- 1:32:57Speaker 14: these kids who are going home and may have some
- 1:33:00Speaker 14: distractions with friends and families wanting tickets.
- 1:33:03Speaker 9: I know last year she'y got to go play in Arizona,
- 1:33:05Speaker 9: and Jordana gotta go to Florida, and Deanna go to
- 1:33:08Speaker 9: go play at Houston. You give these players like a
- 1:33:11Speaker 9: pep talk about staying focused as each player different. How
- 1:33:14Speaker 9: do you kind of handle going home when these players
- 1:33:17Speaker 9: aren't used to playing in front of friends and family.
- 1:33:20Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I don't.
- 1:33:22Speaker 8: I don't typically make it a big deal, you know,
- 1:33:27Speaker 8: we uh, it's just kind of part of it. I'm
- 1:33:31Speaker 8: glad they're going to get to go, you know, back
- 1:33:33Speaker 8: in their area. Their families travel so much during the
- 1:33:36Speaker 8: course of the season, so it's nice to be able
- 1:33:39Speaker 8: to take her close to home in Atlanta. But I
- 1:33:44Speaker 8: don't worry too much about these kids. You know, they
- 1:33:46Speaker 8: they understand there's, uh, there's a role they have on
- 1:33:49Speaker 8: our team, and you know they need to play their role,
- 1:33:53Speaker 8: and uh, you know when you go back home, it's
- 1:33:57Speaker 8: not let me go out and try to get already,
- 1:34:00Speaker 8: you know, it's I mean to go out and keep
- 1:34:02Speaker 8: doing what I'm doing to help my team win. And
- 1:34:05Speaker 8: our kids have always been pretty good about that, So
- 1:34:07Speaker 8: I don't I don't typically worry too much about that.
- 1:34:10Speaker 5: To be honest with you.
- 1:34:12Speaker 11: Don't you want to ask you about a very special
- 1:34:14Speaker 11: program at Texas called the Neighborhood Longhorns Program. The impact
- 1:34:21Speaker 11: that the players and his team has on the younger generations,
- 1:34:26Speaker 11: whether it's going in to their schools, signing their autographs.
- 1:34:30Speaker 11: In this I saw that you did the ten to ten.
- 1:34:33Speaker 11: There's going to be so many kids in the arena
- 1:34:35Speaker 11: and this team is going to have an effect on
- 1:34:38Speaker 11: a future generation that we likely will never see. But
- 1:34:42Speaker 11: it's gonna their stories are going to be based on
- 1:34:45Speaker 11: who they the player that they love to watch. You know,
- 1:34:50Speaker 11: you know Texas, and so I'm curious as you talk
- 1:34:54Speaker 11: to the team or this days you're going through the season,
- 1:34:59Speaker 11: do you guys ever talk about the impact that these
- 1:35:02Speaker 11: players have on kids in school, kids who might not
- 1:35:06Speaker 11: have the opportunities that the players might have.
- 1:35:09Speaker 10: And how special is the neighborhood long run?
- 1:35:13Speaker 8: Well, obviously, we we have a great affection for the
- 1:35:17Speaker 8: Neighborhood Longhorn program, and you know, we've been able to
- 1:35:23Speaker 8: have a game each year and through our game, people
- 1:35:28Speaker 8: like Nile, Maxwell, Silver Spurs and so many friends of
- 1:35:36Speaker 8: the program. Nile reaches out to so many car dealers.
- 1:35:40Speaker 8: We've been able to help raise quite a bit of
- 1:35:42Speaker 8: money for them. And again, you're talking about an organization
- 1:35:47Speaker 8: that impacts young people. I talk to our kids all
- 1:35:50Speaker 8: the time about making time after a game, you know,
- 1:35:54Speaker 8: doing what we do when the game's over, going out
- 1:35:57Speaker 8: to the stands and you know, taking pictures and autographs.
- 1:36:00Speaker 8: It may be the same person each game in every game,
- 1:36:05Speaker 8: same autograph, same picture, but you just never know.
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: What that impact is going to be on that young person.
- 1:36:13Speaker 8: And you know in life, you know, young people are
- 1:36:20Speaker 8: our leaders of tomorrow and for us, the opportunity that
- 1:36:26Speaker 8: God gives us putting us in this position that we're
- 1:36:29Speaker 8: in here at the University of Texas, my players as
- 1:36:32Speaker 8: student athletes, myself, and my staff as coaches. I believe that,
- 1:36:39Speaker 8: you know, we need to we need to do our
- 1:36:41Speaker 8: part and and try to make a positive impact on
- 1:36:46Speaker 8: young people. And I think our kids are absolutely fantastic
- 1:36:51Speaker 8: at it. I think they're so good at it. There's
- 1:36:53Speaker 8: not enough time in this media for me to tell
- 1:36:56Speaker 8: you about the job they're doing. Help and coach some
- 1:37:00Speaker 8: of these little teams in the city, in some of
- 1:37:05Speaker 8: the leagues that these kids play.
- 1:37:06Speaker 5: In the emails that I get commending and.
- 1:37:11Speaker 8: Our players and the time that they're spending with these
- 1:37:14Speaker 8: young people, so it's just another it's another circumstance of
- 1:37:22Speaker 8: pride for me with these players. I'm so proud of them.
- 1:37:27Speaker 8: They're all pretty, they're great kids, and I think that's
- 1:37:31Speaker 8: what separates them and allows them to be a lead,
- 1:37:33Speaker 8: is they are great kids and they understand spending time
- 1:37:37Speaker 8: with someone or saying hello or taking a picture of
- 1:37:40Speaker 8: sign an autograph. You never know what the day was
- 1:37:45Speaker 8: like for that individual, but you just spending thirty seconds
- 1:37:49Speaker 8: with them.
- 1:37:51Speaker 5: Might make their entire day, week, month, year.
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: And so.
- 1:37:57Speaker 8: There's a real value that we place that place on
- 1:38:00Speaker 8: that here at Texas, and I think our kids are
- 1:38:02Speaker 8: great at it.
- 1:38:05Speaker 15: Yeah, coach talking about kids meeting their heroes.
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: Did book?
- 1:38:09Speaker 15: Was she able to hook up with KD while he
- 1:38:11Speaker 15: got in?
- 1:38:12Speaker 5: You know, I feel confident she probably did.
- 1:38:15Speaker 8: I don't know that from yesterday we had you know,
- 1:38:19Speaker 8: I don't know if she saw him. Tuesday, that was
- 1:38:22Speaker 8: our day off, and then Wednesday we practice, so they
- 1:38:25Speaker 8: were over there. I think the Phoenix was working out
- 1:38:28Speaker 8: when we were working out, So I don't know if
- 1:38:30Speaker 8: she got seen or not. But I'm sure there'll be
- 1:38:34Speaker 8: a time when she'll get to And I know the
- 1:38:37Speaker 8: kids are all fired up by going to the game tonight.
- 1:38:40Speaker 15: Yeah, and along those lines, you know, KD had some
- 1:38:42Speaker 15: really nice things to say, not only about women's basketball
- 1:38:46Speaker 15: in general, not sure program about book the other day.
- 1:38:51Speaker 10: Do the girls hear that and do they did?
- 1:38:53Speaker 15: They give him a little extra charge knowing that, you know,
- 1:38:55Speaker 15: a guy like KD is respecting what they're doing.
- 1:38:59Speaker 8: I'm sure they heard it. You know, they're they're they
- 1:39:02Speaker 8: don't miss too many things. So you know, we really
- 1:39:05Speaker 8: appreciate him and appreciate his trust and confidence, and you know,
- 1:39:11Speaker 8: we're glad that he's paying attention He's somebody that we
- 1:39:14Speaker 8: obviously hold in extreme high regards and high esteem, and
- 1:39:19Speaker 8: his opinion matters, and uh we we have a lot
- 1:39:22Speaker 8: of respect and admiration for him, and uh so we
- 1:39:26Speaker 8: appreciate his kind words.
- 1:39:28Speaker 5: And you know, he always I have to say, he.
- 1:39:31Speaker 8: Always makes time for us, whether he's here for a
- 1:39:33Speaker 8: football game and it's Saturday afternoon, one hundred degrees on
- 1:39:37Speaker 8: the field and everybody's clamoring for him, and he sees us.
- 1:39:41Speaker 8: He always makes time for us, my kids taking a picture,
- 1:39:45Speaker 8: small conversation.
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: I mean, he's always so good.
- 1:39:48Speaker 8: And uh again, we appreciated him coming to the NCAA tournament,
- 1:39:52Speaker 8: you know, last year.
- 1:39:54Speaker 5: So he's a special, special man.
- 1:39:57Speaker 8: And again my kids, they appreciate him and love him
- 1:40:03Speaker 8: for that.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: All right, coming up, Cam will be back to wrapping
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: up as I head over the Pluckers to get ready
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: for tonight's show with Roddy Terry and our special guest
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: Tray Johnson. And Cam will wrap it up when we
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: come back on thirteen Under the Zone.
