- 1:32Speaker 2: That would be Jonathan Howe from ninety seven to seven
- 1:35Speaker 2: Hits FM. Jonathan, I know you you're a big Sabers
- 1:39Speaker 2: a follower as well. You do great work on the
- 1:42Speaker 2: radio station on the Niagara side here, ninety seven to seven,
- 1:45Speaker 2: a very popular radio station here, And I know you
- 1:47Speaker 2: you're excited to talk Sabers. It's unfortunately your first appearance
- 1:51Speaker 2: on the show is after a loss, but appreciate you
- 1:54Speaker 2: coming on anyway.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for having me, man, I mean this is
- 1:58Speaker 3: yeah like this. I wish the circumstances were a little
- 2:01Speaker 3: bit better, but still a lot of fun. And I
- 2:03Speaker 3: always love to talk Buffalo Sabers hockey. So excited to
- 2:07Speaker 3: dive into what was a bit of a difficult one
- 2:10Speaker 3: for us.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll touch on the game stats. We'll go
- 2:13Speaker 2: over the scoring summary. We're gonna get to the live
- 2:16Speaker 2: post games with head coach Lindy Ruff, as well as
- 2:19Speaker 2: select players that are made available to the media here
- 2:22Speaker 2: tonight downtown Montreal was a rocking building there at the
- 2:26Speaker 2: Bell Center, so we'll get all of that that going
- 2:29Speaker 2: for you guys as well. And yeah, just a six
- 2:33Speaker 2: to two defeat for the Sabers. They fall to to
- 2:36Speaker 2: one in the series as of now. Tuesday night, another
- 2:39Speaker 2: game at the Bell Center before they go back home.
- 2:42Speaker 2: The Sabers with home ice advantage in the series. They've
- 2:45Speaker 2: now technically lost that at the moment right now. But again,
- 2:49Speaker 2: if you split in Montreal, you've got a best of
- 2:52Speaker 2: three with two games on home ice for five and seven,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and you just have to win two of those if
- 2:58Speaker 2: they're able to get the split coming in, Jonathan, if
- 3:01Speaker 2: they got a split in Montreal, that would be a
- 3:04Speaker 2: win because we know, you know, and we saw it tonight,
- 3:07Speaker 2: just how amazing that building can be for playoff games
- 3:11Speaker 2: in Montreal.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely. I mean for me, though, the way the
- 3:15Speaker 3: game started, it's not that they fully took the crowd
- 3:18Speaker 3: out of it, but with Thompson scored, scoring what fifty
- 3:20Speaker 3: three seconds into the game, i mean, come on, like
- 3:23Speaker 3: that is your prime opportunity to truly get going and
- 3:27Speaker 3: take the Montreal crowd out of it and level that
- 3:29Speaker 3: factor right away. And it just felt like they just
- 3:32Speaker 3: didn't really seize the opportunity to like really keep the
- 3:36Speaker 3: pressure on it and fully make this a difficult night
- 3:40Speaker 3: for Montreal and their fan base.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right about that.
- 3:44Speaker 2: We'll get into that with the scoring summary, but for
- 3:47Speaker 2: full disclosure, for those that are listening on the American side,
- 3:50Speaker 2: and we're a Canadian based Sabers podcast, but we had
- 3:54Speaker 2: to listen to the CBC broadcast, and with Montreal being
- 3:57Speaker 2: the last Indian team in the playoffs, they sure as
- 4:01Speaker 2: heck on the hockey night in Canada, the broadcast are
- 4:03Speaker 2: pumping Montreal's tires and I mean rightfully so, but I
- 4:07Speaker 2: mean before the game even started. I think Ron McClain
- 4:10Speaker 2: said the Cathedral of Hockey or the mother Ship about
- 4:13Speaker 2: four times before the fuck was even dropped in Montreal.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So you Americans have no idea what this is like
- 4:18Speaker 2: right now having to listen to these very much pro
- 4:22Speaker 2: Montreal Canadian broadcast on the Canadian side, and before the
- 4:25Speaker 2: habs fans come after me in the comments. I understand
- 4:28Speaker 2: why they, Ok, it's a Canadian you know, broadcast for
- 4:32Speaker 2: a reason, and the Canadians are the last remaining team
- 4:34Speaker 2: in the playoffs, so I understand it. But from our
- 4:37Speaker 2: perspective having to listen to it and watch it, you know,
- 4:40Speaker 2: it just it it made me me chuckle a little bit.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I don't know about you.
- 4:45Speaker 3: It was so frustrating, like I've been for the most
- 4:48Speaker 3: part watching the American feeds going forward. Like obviously Brown
- 4:51Speaker 3: One was awesome because we got Dan and Rob depending
- 4:55Speaker 3: on if you were able to grab that feed right
- 4:57Speaker 3: and watch the games that way. So I almost there
- 5:00Speaker 3: was a point where I literally thought about muting the
- 5:02Speaker 3: TV and putting the radio call on because I just
- 5:05Speaker 3: I couldn't stand it. Like the and like Chris Cuthbert
- 5:10Speaker 3: is an absolute legend, Like I'm not here to rain
- 5:12Speaker 3: on the guy's parade, but he's hit that point now
- 5:15Speaker 3: where he's making mistakes. Like he was talking about how
- 5:19Speaker 3: Beck Mallenstein was on Washington battling the Canadians in the
- 5:22Speaker 3: playoffs last year. No he wasn't.
- 5:23Speaker 1: He was still with the Savers.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Like, and I know there's like lots of little things
- 5:27Speaker 3: that you can get wrong and whatever, but it's just like,
- 5:29Speaker 3: I don't know. It just constantly feels like the Sabers
- 5:33Speaker 3: they don't bother to give enough credit or do enough research.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Even the stats team, I feel like they waste their
- 5:38Speaker 3: time and they don't look up things as much as
- 5:41Speaker 3: they possibly should to properly cover the game. Obviously, everybody
- 5:46Speaker 3: team Canada wise is trying to go behind Montreal, and
- 5:49Speaker 3: I get it. And honestly, if it was the case
- 5:53Speaker 3: where Montreal does defeat the Sabers. I'd probably be pulling
- 5:57Speaker 3: for them the rest of the way myself, even but
- 6:00Speaker 3: like it's just it's it's really frustrating, and I feel like,
- 6:05Speaker 3: I don't know, it just it just feels like everything
- 6:08Speaker 3: right now is against the Sabers, and even when the
- 6:10Speaker 3: Savers do do something good on the ice, it's like
- 6:13Speaker 3: it's a shock to people up here. It's like it
- 6:15Speaker 3: shouldn't be. This team has been one of the best
- 6:17Speaker 3: teams in the NHL since December. Guys, like, I.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Don't know, it's frustrating for sure, And we love Chris Guthbert,
- 6:25Speaker 2: you know, we love Canadian you know, Olympic hockey and
- 6:28Speaker 2: the great calls he's had over the years there. But yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 2: just a very much a pro Montreal Canadians broadcast and
- 6:34Speaker 2: the national broadcast, you know, in general, I feel like
- 6:37Speaker 2: are are a little bit lesser than the local broadcast.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And that's taking nothing away from the people that work there,
- 6:41Speaker 2: but it just, uh, you know, when the the big
- 6:43Speaker 2: guys come in for the playoffs and get all the
- 6:45Speaker 2: glory at the end, you feel for the local markets.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And yes, listening to Dan and Razor on the radio,
- 6:50Speaker 2: sometimes it's hard to sink it up. But if you can. Obviously,
- 6:54Speaker 2: for us here in Canada, that's a would be something
- 6:57Speaker 2: that we'd look look for. The people in the United
- 6:59Speaker 2: States are probably just wondering what the heck we're even
- 7:01Speaker 2: talking about here, But again that's why we're a Niagara
- 7:04Speaker 2: Region Canadian Sabers podcast, so we can we can gripe
- 7:07Speaker 2: about this a little bit at the beginning of the show. Okay,
- 7:10Speaker 2: So with that said, Jonathan, let's uh, let's look ahead
- 7:13Speaker 2: to just sort of the quickly over the game stats here,
- 7:16Speaker 2: and as always, those are brought to you by Janel Flooring.
- 7:18Speaker 2: If you think get a better deal anywhere else you
- 7:20Speaker 2: don't know Jack, check them out at jano flooring dot
- 7:22Speaker 2: com or visitor Naga Falls location to begin your quality
- 7:24Speaker 2: flooring project today. I know Jack's not gonna be upset
- 7:27Speaker 2: or he's going to be upset about the tonight's result,
- 7:29Speaker 2: being a big Sabers guy himself, but yeah, I mean
- 7:32Speaker 2: when you look at that, Jonathan, you know shots, you
- 7:35Speaker 2: know in favor of the Canadians, but the Sabers in
- 7:38Speaker 2: that third period, you know, with the Canadians sort of
- 7:40Speaker 2: trying to play defense with that lead there they end
- 7:43Speaker 2: up leading in the shot department thirty six twenty eight.
- 7:46Speaker 2: You know, the first two periods were telling in that sense.
- 7:48Speaker 2: You expected a better face off performance for the Sabers
- 7:50Speaker 2: with Sam Carratt coming back in forgot to mention that
- 7:53Speaker 2: off the top as well. This is his first game
- 7:55Speaker 2: after being injured in late March, so he was back
- 7:58Speaker 2: in there the Sabers' best face off man, but the
- 8:01Speaker 2: Canadians took that that category pretty handily tonight, sixty two
- 8:04Speaker 2: point three percent of the Sabers thirty seven point seven percent.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And then you can see, you know, penalty minutes, hits,
- 8:11Speaker 2: block shots. The Sabers actually had one more than the
- 8:14Speaker 2: Canadians did. They had one more, one less giveaway, and
- 8:18Speaker 2: they had six takeaways on the night, but six to
- 8:21Speaker 2: two on the score sheet. I don't know if there's
- 8:22Speaker 2: anything you want to touch on from the game stats tonight.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I mean, it's a it's almost like with the shots
- 8:29Speaker 3: on goal, if things got closer than they should have been,
- 8:33Speaker 3: Like I felt like the once the game kind of
- 8:36Speaker 3: got out of hand, and I don't know, like I
- 8:40Speaker 3: just I wanted more from the Sabers early on. I'm
- 8:43Speaker 3: I don't really care about the totals. It was the
- 8:45Speaker 3: differential between the two teams in the first period in
- 8:49Speaker 3: the second period, Right, you look at that first period
- 8:51Speaker 3: fourteen to eight. To be out shot like that, that's
- 8:54Speaker 3: not gonna fly, especially on the road. You've got to
- 8:56Speaker 3: get pucks on net. You know, we're not going to
- 8:59Speaker 3: see the same success that we saw in Game one,
- 9:03Speaker 3: where what was it, I think Dobish gave up four
- 9:05Speaker 3: on nine or something like that. I think it was
- 9:07Speaker 3: back in the first game in Buffalo. That's not gonna
- 9:10Speaker 3: happen again. You need to get pucks on net. You
- 9:12Speaker 3: need to test him, you need to make him work,
- 9:14Speaker 3: you need to make him as tired as the Canadians
- 9:16Speaker 3: ended up making Alex Lion throughout the night. Even in
- 9:19Speaker 3: the second period, it still wasn't that much better. Still
- 9:23Speaker 3: outshot by five point five shots, and then in the
- 9:25Speaker 3: third you kind of have the edge, but that's because
- 9:28Speaker 3: you're chasing the game, right, So for me, it's just
- 9:31Speaker 3: about making these stats a little bit more even or
- 9:34Speaker 3: even trying to lead these categories coming out of the
- 9:37Speaker 3: first coming out of the second period. And I think
- 9:39Speaker 3: that's where Buffalo's biggest problem is that I just I
- 9:42Speaker 3: don't know. I haven't loved their first periods, and really
- 9:47Speaker 3: I haven't loved them most of the playoffs as a whole,
- 9:50Speaker 3: but especially in this series. I have not left the
- 9:53Speaker 3: start the last two games that the Sabers have had.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah, early in the series against Boston, they really struggled
- 9:58Speaker 2: in the first periods and then they started to get
- 9:59Speaker 2: a going a little bit near the end of that series,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and we're able to close it out. But everyone was
- 10:04Speaker 2: sort of, I don't want to say, on their high
- 10:07Speaker 2: horse after game one. That's a you know, maybe I'm
- 10:10Speaker 2: a little bit too far on that one, but everybody
- 10:13Speaker 2: was a little bit over confident. I said, Okay, guys, like,
- 10:15Speaker 2: let's relax here. Montreal's going to adjust. They just came
- 10:17Speaker 2: off a seven game series against the Tampa Bay Lightning,
- 10:20Speaker 2: where you have to have a game or so to
- 10:21Speaker 2: adjust to the Sabers team. And I knew that there
- 10:25Speaker 2: was going to be a pushback from Marty Saint Louis team.
- 10:27Speaker 2: They're always ready to go, They're always ready to bounce
- 10:29Speaker 2: back after a loss. And even though the Sabers are
- 10:32Speaker 2: one of the best road teams in the NHL this season,
- 10:35Speaker 2: I knew that you know, the second game obviously win
- 10:37Speaker 2: as it went for a Montreal's favor, and then you
- 10:40Speaker 2: expected the Sabers to have, you know, a solid performance,
- 10:43Speaker 2: and you know, guys like Tage Thompson were highly ridiculed
- 10:47Speaker 2: for what was a very tough game for him. You know,
- 10:50Speaker 2: it is only one game and Tage Thompson is still
- 10:52Speaker 2: the leader that that forward group, so it was nice
- 10:54Speaker 2: to see him get the goal early fifty five seconds in.
- 10:57Speaker 2: But then you know, they really, as you mentioned, they
- 10:59Speaker 2: really didn't build off of that and it they let
- 11:02Speaker 2: the Montreal crowd get going, get back into it, and
- 11:05Speaker 2: we saw just as you mentioned just that at times
- 11:08Speaker 2: they looked they looked lost the Sabers did in the
- 11:12Speaker 2: defensive zone coverage. With the lineup, there really wasn't any
- 11:15Speaker 2: changes other than Sam Carratt coming in for Tyson Kozak
- 11:18Speaker 2: as the fourth line center on the night. I know
- 11:21Speaker 2: Stanley's going to get some criticism for a couple of
- 11:25Speaker 2: the goals tonight as well, but which we'll talk about
- 11:29Speaker 2: the scoring summary there. But you know, just as far
- 11:32Speaker 2: as looking at at what we saw tonight from the lineup, Jonathan, like,
- 11:35Speaker 2: is there anything that you might want to see different
- 11:37Speaker 2: or even you know, we saw them shake up the
- 11:38Speaker 2: power play units as well. I should mention that that
- 11:41Speaker 2: they that Lindy Ruff did try out some some different
- 11:44Speaker 2: combinations there, but I don't know if you got any
- 11:46Speaker 2: thoughts there.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I thought the changes on the power play were actually
- 11:50Speaker 3: to the benefit of the Sabers. I liked what I saw.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I know it still wasn't a super successful night. He
- 11:57Speaker 3: had Dolian get a power play goal for the guys.
- 12:00Speaker 3: But the big thing that I was looking at as
- 12:02Speaker 3: the night went on was Jason Zucker his time on
- 12:05Speaker 3: ice right Like he is not playing a fourth line
- 12:08Speaker 3: role right now, but he still only had according to
- 12:10Speaker 3: this numbers, I'm seeing six minutes forty seven seconds of
- 12:13Speaker 3: ice time throughout the game. I think he's one of
- 12:16Speaker 3: those guys that's battling something, and like everybody's battling something
- 12:19Speaker 3: and we're not supposed to speculate on injuries all that.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I get that, but I just think about it, like,
- 12:25Speaker 3: if you're only giving six minutes of ice time to
- 12:28Speaker 3: Jason Zucker, if that's all he's got, I kind of
- 12:31Speaker 3: would almost say, let's give him a rest and get
- 12:34Speaker 3: Kozak back in there, because I didn't hate what Kozak
- 12:36Speaker 3: was giving you centering that fourth line, and then that
- 12:40Speaker 3: gives you with krc now back in it, give that
- 12:42Speaker 3: gives you another guy who's somewhat decent in the face
- 12:45Speaker 3: off zone. Like, I don't think that Kozak hurts you
- 12:50Speaker 3: in the dot necessarily. I mean, I haven't looked at
- 12:51Speaker 3: the numbers that badly, but from the eye test, I
- 12:54Speaker 3: didn't see anything that jumped off the page where I
- 12:56Speaker 3: was like, Man, Kozak's got to get off being a centerman.
- 12:59Speaker 3: That's not gonna work. But I will say that Tays
- 13:01Speaker 3: Thompson right now cannot win a face off to save
- 13:04Speaker 3: his life, and that's been something he's struggled with since
- 13:08Speaker 3: they've tried to make him a center, going back to
- 13:10Speaker 3: the Grenado days.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Right.
- 13:12Speaker 3: So to me, I'm wondering, like, maybe if you give
- 13:16Speaker 3: Zucker a knight off, you put Carrick back maybe between
- 13:21Speaker 3: Benson and Done, then maybe you move Thompson to the
- 13:24Speaker 3: wing and give the opportunity to Norris take some more draws.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I don't know if that's the play. I don't know
- 13:29Speaker 3: if you put Carrick up there, but I just think
- 13:31Speaker 3: you got to get Thompson out of the dot because
- 13:33Speaker 3: that's that's the killer even on the power play, is
- 13:36Speaker 3: that they never start with the puck's They're like, very
- 13:41Speaker 3: rarely are they actually winning a face off in the
- 13:43Speaker 3: zone to start a power play, And that's automatically wiping
- 13:46Speaker 3: fifteen seconds of time to set up and get the
- 13:48Speaker 3: puck rotating around, which is the saber strength. When they
- 13:52Speaker 3: get the puck moving between guys pat making passes going
- 13:56Speaker 3: east west on the power play, I think that's where
- 13:58Speaker 3: they can really expose munch all, you know, looking at
- 14:01Speaker 3: Dobish and net. The only goals we've scored on him,
- 14:05Speaker 3: it's been screenshots and it's been east west plays.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Think about that last game where there, you know, Benson's
- 14:11Speaker 3: at the at the net side stick down, tap in right.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Even in the first game, it was either a side
- 14:17Speaker 3: to side, post to post, you get Dobish moving, you
- 14:20Speaker 3: expose him that way, or you gotta give us a
- 14:23Speaker 3: seeing eye shot that he doesn't see, right, Like, you're
- 14:25Speaker 3: not gonna beat this guy clean. He's feeling it too much.
- 14:28Speaker 3: So I don't know this. I don't want to be
- 14:32Speaker 3: overreacting here, you know, and like I know how much
- 14:35Speaker 3: Jason Zucker has given us and given our team throughout
- 14:38Speaker 3: the year, but I just feel like if he can't
- 14:41Speaker 3: give you more than six minutes in a night, I
- 14:44Speaker 3: think i'd rather see Tyson Kozak out there, who I
- 14:47Speaker 3: believe is healthy. And I don't know if you saw
- 14:50Speaker 3: that pop that Karrot got at the end from Jack.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Guys like I don't know what Karrick was dealing with,
- 14:54Speaker 3: but I can't imagine getting punched in the face helps
- 14:56Speaker 3: you very much in your first game. So no, And
- 15:00Speaker 3: with Austlin, he was a guy that you liked when
- 15:02Speaker 3: he was in the lineup, but then obviously he's been
- 15:04Speaker 3: injured and it's going to be out for the rest
- 15:06Speaker 3: of the series, so that's unfortunate as well. And you
- 15:08Speaker 3: mentioned with the power play, their problem is the zone entries,
- 15:11Speaker 3: and when they don't start with the puck and they
- 15:12Speaker 3: have to try to get the puck back into the zone.
- 15:15Speaker 1: That's when mistakes happen.
- 15:16Speaker 2: And that's what we've seen with the Sabers power play,
- 15:20Speaker 2: not being able to start with the puck and set
- 15:22Speaker 2: up there. And as you mentioned about Jason Zucker, you
- 15:24Speaker 2: don't want to expect that on any injuries, but from
- 15:26Speaker 2: Matthew Fairburn said that Zucker only played three minutes and
- 15:29Speaker 2: thirty two seconds through two periods, and that's just you know,
- 15:31Speaker 2: I don't know if he's dealing with an injury there.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I guess we'll have to wait and see if Lindy
- 15:35Speaker 2: Rouff updates us later on that one. But yeah, just
- 15:38Speaker 2: when you look at the discrepancy and what we saw
- 15:40Speaker 2: from the points with the what we saw from the
- 15:44Speaker 2: player stats tonight, and I got to pull it up
- 15:46Speaker 2: on my screen because I can't read it because the
- 15:48Speaker 2: interface is too small.
- 15:49Speaker 1: On my screen.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Well, we know Benson got twelve minutes and penalties, and
- 15:53Speaker 2: I mean that's pretty standard for what the game he's
- 15:56Speaker 2: sort of been playing and the role that he's adapted
- 15:58Speaker 2: to for the Sabers. But you know, when you look
- 16:01Speaker 2: at the ice time tonight, you know Dollen led it
- 16:04Speaker 2: with twenty three minutes. You also had Byram with over
- 16:08Speaker 2: twenty minutes. Samulson played over twenty three minutes tonight. Stanley
- 16:13Speaker 2: played less than twelve minutes, So I don't know if
- 16:15Speaker 2: he played a little bit less than that third period
- 16:17Speaker 2: after you know, giving up that goal, trying to get
- 16:21Speaker 2: back in the defensive end. And then the Saber's trying
- 16:23Speaker 2: to press, so they don't really want Stanley on the
- 16:25Speaker 2: ice when they're trying to create offense.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So that might have been that there.
- 16:28Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, everybody else played at least over
- 16:32Speaker 2: just over ten minutes except for Jason Zucker and Sam
- 16:36Speaker 2: Krrick tonight. We know what happened with Malenstein and taking
- 16:39Speaker 2: that penalty with Dobish, which we'll we'll talk about a
- 16:42Speaker 2: little bit after as well. But yeah, I mean, just
- 16:45Speaker 2: you know, Quinn was minus two tonight, Tuck was minus
- 16:48Speaker 2: two tonight, Thompson was minus two tonight, even though he
- 16:50Speaker 2: scored fifty seconds in Byram minus two. Dolleen was minus two,
- 16:53Speaker 2: and I know that there was an empty net goal
- 16:55Speaker 2: in there by Montreal and things like that. But they're
- 16:58Speaker 2: just gonna need to have better performances up and on
- 17:00Speaker 2: the lineup offensively. You can't have Donan and Benson working
- 17:03Speaker 2: hard at every single game and nobody else really pulling
- 17:07Speaker 2: the rope there. So I just think they need better,
- 17:09Speaker 2: better contributions from some of those veteran players that are
- 17:12Speaker 2: being paid to produce and that are expected to produce.
- 17:16Speaker 3: I think that first series, right, one of the takeaways was,
- 17:20Speaker 3: you know, long term for US Sabers fans and people
- 17:23Speaker 3: who are following the Savers is man Alex Tuck. He
- 17:26Speaker 3: is earning a lot of money. He's gonna get himself paid.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Da Da da da.
- 17:30Speaker 3: I kind of feel like the last couple of games
- 17:33Speaker 3: have cost Alex Tucks some money. I want more out
- 17:37Speaker 3: of Tuck. I want a little bit more defensive responsibility.
- 17:42Speaker 3: I didn't love the penalty he took. I thought it was,
- 17:44Speaker 3: you know, kind of a lazy stick penalty to take,
- 17:48Speaker 3: you know, And I don't find him shooting enough. I
- 17:54Speaker 3: just think there's some something amiss right now. And maybe
- 17:57Speaker 3: it's just there's too many guys who are dealing with
- 17:58Speaker 3: too much going on, whatever it is, but they just
- 18:02Speaker 3: don't seem to have the immediacy that I want to
- 18:07Speaker 3: see out of them. When Buffalo is playing their best hockey,
- 18:10Speaker 3: everything is boom boom. Pucks are coming off sticks real quick,
- 18:14Speaker 3: and it's like it doesn't really matter. I know, I
- 18:16Speaker 3: just singled out Alex suff but it doesn't really matter
- 18:18Speaker 3: who you look at right now. I felt like everybody
- 18:21Speaker 3: was just a split second too slow to get rid
- 18:26Speaker 3: of the puck, to make the play to move the
- 18:29Speaker 3: puck north. Everything is just taking a touch too long.
- 18:33Speaker 3: And maybe that's Montreal just being that much faster, that
- 18:36Speaker 3: much more determined to get the puck. Maybe that's all
- 18:39Speaker 3: it is, but it just feels like there's so many
- 18:42Speaker 3: guys who had opportunities to make really quick bang bang plays,
- 18:46Speaker 3: the puck play that Lindy Ruff is always talking about.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I just feel like tonight it and even last game,
- 18:51Speaker 3: it's not going fast enough to give them the opportunity
- 18:54Speaker 3: to tilt the ice in their favor.
- 18:57Speaker 2: And coming into tonight, Buffalo had won three straight postseason
- 19:00Speaker 2: games on the road, tied for their longest streak with
- 19:03Speaker 2: a single postseason in franchise history. They were outscoring opponents
- 19:07Speaker 2: by ten on the road this season, the highest amongst
- 19:09Speaker 2: playoff teams. They two thousand and six in nineteen ninety
- 19:14Speaker 2: eight were the other teams that the Sabers had, but
- 19:17Speaker 2: the longest road win streaks in a postseason, and they
- 19:20Speaker 2: had a plus ten goal differential was tied for the
- 19:23Speaker 2: best that they've ever had in the playoffs on the
- 19:25Speaker 2: road so far the season, but obviously tonight didn't go
- 19:28Speaker 2: their way. We'll quickly go over the scoring summary has
- 19:30Speaker 2: always brought to you by the Nagar Employment Help Center,
- 19:32Speaker 2: helping people find work in the Niagara region since nineteen
- 19:35Speaker 2: eighty three. Checkout through to day joboard at EHC, dot
- 19:37Speaker 2: O and dot C to find your next work opportunity.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Today.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Yeah, my first notes, we're talking about the Cathedral of
- 19:42Speaker 2: hockey and the Mothership.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I'm done with that.
- 19:46Speaker 2: We mentioned Tatee Thompson, you know, picks up the friendly
- 19:49Speaker 2: rebound off the back wall behind Dobish in an empty net,
- 19:53Speaker 2: and you're thinking, Wow, if there was ever a guy
- 19:55Speaker 2: that needed a break like that, it was Tage Thompson,
- 19:57Speaker 2: who hasn't scored since he had that you know, epic
- 19:59Speaker 2: t goal comeback for the Sabers in Game one against
- 20:02Speaker 2: the Bruins. I had gone seven goal seven straight games
- 20:05Speaker 2: without a goal, and yeah, fifty five seconds in, it's
- 20:08Speaker 2: one nothing Buffalo, and you mentioned right away, you know,
- 20:10Speaker 2: you stunned the Montreal crowd and you're thinking, Okay, this
- 20:13Speaker 2: is gonna look a lot different than we.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Saw in game two.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it felt like this is the exact moment we needed.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Thompson's gonna get his breakout. You know, it was a
- 20:21Speaker 3: power It felt like a power play. Marker because it
- 20:24Speaker 3: was dolling from Thompson, like your big boys getting after it,
- 20:27Speaker 3: getting early. It really felt like something special that was gonna,
- 20:31Speaker 3: you know, really allow for the Sabers to break through
- 20:34Speaker 3: the damn and then from there it just seemed like
- 20:36Speaker 3: Montreal became a much more desperate team and Buffalo again,
- 20:40Speaker 3: just in my eyes, they just were not quick enough,
- 20:43Speaker 3: They were not fast enough, they did not want to
- 20:45Speaker 3: move the puck north like I say, and eventually Montreal
- 20:49Speaker 3: was able to break them with that Alex new Hook goal.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Who I mean, Alex new Hook?
- 20:54Speaker 5: Who?
- 20:54Speaker 3: Like, what do we do? Why are we letting this
- 20:57Speaker 3: guy torch us? The new fies just crushing a yes
- 21:00Speaker 3: right now.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I have a Colorado Avalanche fan, and I texted him
- 21:03Speaker 2: after the last game instead, I'm not really a fan
- 21:06Speaker 2: of Avalanche legend Alex Newhook And then I literally just
- 21:09Speaker 2: texted him again tonight with the same thing and said this,
- 21:12Speaker 2: this statement still stands, So imagine him on Colorado right now.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I mean, if they weren't already an unstoppable wagon, Alex
- 21:20Speaker 2: new Hook really, you know, performing well? And I will
- 21:23Speaker 2: give it to the CBC broadcast, they talked about new
- 21:25Speaker 2: Hook playing down in a role and maybe that was
- 21:26Speaker 2: better for him. Clearly, you know, he's been one of
- 21:30Speaker 2: Montreal's best players so far in the playoffs. Talk actually
- 21:33Speaker 2: came in as the Sabers, you know, top point producer.
- 21:35Speaker 2: But as you mentioned, yeah, just the start of this
- 21:38Speaker 2: series has not been good and especially the last two
- 21:41Speaker 2: have not been good enough for number eighty nine, and
- 21:42Speaker 2: I'm sure he would be the first to probably say
- 21:45Speaker 2: that as well. And we should mention Tage Thompson's comments
- 21:48Speaker 2: after last game when he was asked by reporters, are
- 21:51Speaker 2: you playing injured? And he basically just said it's none
- 21:53Speaker 2: of your business. So again, you can take that one
- 21:56Speaker 2: or two ways. Either he just doesn't want to talk
- 21:57Speaker 2: about anything at all, or maybe he is playing through
- 22:00Speaker 2: an injury. And we know players are playing through a
- 22:02Speaker 2: lot in the playoffs on all teams, but people keep
- 22:05Speaker 2: going back to this one play in the Bruin series
- 22:07Speaker 2: where he kind of got slew footed. I think it
- 22:09Speaker 2: was from Macavoy, but you know, it didn't really seem
- 22:13Speaker 2: to affect him going forward. But you know, I'm sure
- 22:16Speaker 2: he's playing through something like a lot of the players
- 22:18Speaker 2: are on every team, so you know, he just gave
- 22:21Speaker 2: a short response like that after a loss. I'm not
- 22:23Speaker 2: going to grill him for it, but I found it
- 22:25Speaker 2: kind of interesting that he sort of barked at that.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Yeah, the red flag for me was I think it
- 22:30Speaker 3: was the final power play the Savers had tonight where
- 22:33Speaker 3: there was a moment where he was set up in
- 22:36Speaker 3: his office, so to speak, on that side in the
- 22:39Speaker 3: power play, wound up and ended up passing off on
- 22:43Speaker 3: the shot. And now I know, and I understand that.
- 22:46Speaker 3: You know, if you're wound up like that and you
- 22:48Speaker 3: have the ability to maybe not shoot and just have
- 22:52Speaker 3: it blocked or whatever. But if you're Tage Thompson and
- 22:55Speaker 3: you can fire a shot as hard as he can,
- 22:58Speaker 3: why would you not take the shot? And if one
- 23:01Speaker 3: of Montreal's players steps in front of it and they
- 23:04Speaker 3: break their ankle in front of it, that's playoff hockey.
- 23:07Speaker 3: They didn't need to do that. They didn't need to
- 23:09Speaker 3: step in front of a ninety eight mile an hour
- 23:10Speaker 3: slap shot. That's the way it goes. And yeah, you
- 23:13Speaker 3: didn't score, But if you're just dishing the playoff back
- 23:16Speaker 3: to Dullin and he's not shooting them, what why are
- 23:19Speaker 3: you wasting it? So The only other reason in my
- 23:21Speaker 3: head that Thompson doesn't take that shot is I'm wondering
- 23:24Speaker 3: if he's got something that's he's dealing with, whether it's
- 23:26Speaker 3: something in the back, maybe a shoulder or whatever. Again,
- 23:29Speaker 3: I'm not here to speculate. I'm not a doctor. I'm
- 23:31Speaker 3: not going to pretend to play it on TV or
- 23:33Speaker 3: anything either. But I just look at that moment in
- 23:37Speaker 3: the game, and I think there was more than a
- 23:39Speaker 3: few moments, maybe in the Boston series, where he was
- 23:41Speaker 3: trying something like that and the stick would either explode
- 23:44Speaker 3: in his hand or he'd fall on it, whatever, And
- 23:46Speaker 3: I just was like, the guy is not necessarily feeling himself,
- 23:50Speaker 3: and you still got to find a way to be effective.
- 23:54Speaker 3: And I think, you know, for the most part, I
- 23:57Speaker 3: didn't really have a ton of criticism for Thompson.
- 24:01Speaker 4: You know.
- 24:01Speaker 3: I know, he got burned on that play at the
- 24:03Speaker 3: Blue Lionish area in Game two. It happens kind of
- 24:08Speaker 3: looked like he caught a rut and tangled up his
- 24:10Speaker 3: feet whatever. Maybe it's a leg injury that prevented him
- 24:12Speaker 3: from being as nimble as normal, But I mean he's
- 24:15Speaker 3: been coming out, he's been laying the body. He's trying
- 24:18Speaker 3: to do something, he's trying to manufacture things as best
- 24:20Speaker 3: as he possibly can. I I don't know. This is
- 24:25Speaker 3: just playoff hockey. This is just one of those times.
- 24:27Speaker 3: You know, the twenty sixteen was a wagon and then
- 24:29Speaker 3: all of a sudden, every single defenseman that we had
- 24:31Speaker 3: was hurt. So this is playoff hockey. It happens. You're
- 24:35Speaker 3: gonna have to battle through. But I just I want
- 24:38Speaker 3: to see the Sabers if they're gonna lose games like that,
- 24:40Speaker 3: I want to see somebody go out there and take
- 24:42Speaker 3: a bite of somebody else. And I'm not seeing enough
- 24:46Speaker 3: of that either.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we saw Malenstein do it with Dolvish, and again,
- 24:51Speaker 2: was that maybe a little bit too far? And did
- 24:53Speaker 2: he get lucky that he didn't get a five minute major? Probably,
- 24:56Speaker 2: But again you need a little bit of fight back,
- 24:58Speaker 2: and other than ninety one and six, which is Donan Benson,
- 25:02Speaker 2: there isn't enough of that from the rest of the
- 25:03Speaker 2: guys right now. I know there's scrums, but it just
- 25:05Speaker 2: feels like Montreal has the momentum right now in this
- 25:08Speaker 2: series and the Savers are gonna have to turn it
- 25:10Speaker 2: in their back in their favor. And again, like Fortage,
- 25:14Speaker 2: hopefully that goal gets him a little bit of confidence
- 25:16Speaker 2: going into Game four. We saw how snake bit and
- 25:18Speaker 2: Cole Cawfield has been for the Montreal Canadians, and he
- 25:21Speaker 2: got on the board tonight.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I'll just move forward with the scoring summary.
- 25:25Speaker 2: There new Hook on the rebound as Evans kind of
- 25:28Speaker 2: had Lion out of the crease. Lion was very aggressive,
- 25:31Speaker 2: I will say, especially in that first period, there were
- 25:33Speaker 2: a lot of times where he was right outside the
- 25:35Speaker 2: crease coming out to challenge the pucks, but that one
- 25:39Speaker 2: was caused with the Timmins.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Turnover on the fore check.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Lion was very aggressive as I mentioned, and new Hook
- 25:44Speaker 2: was able to pot that thing in on the rebound
- 25:47Speaker 2: as Evans kind of got that initial shot and it
- 25:49Speaker 2: was one one at that point because you thought, darn
- 25:52Speaker 2: like the Savers got a lead and then you wondered
- 25:53Speaker 2: if they could get that second one, it could really
- 25:56Speaker 2: change things. Montreal was able to get that thing tied
- 25:58Speaker 2: and have it won one going into the second period.
- 26:02Speaker 1: The Sabers also had a power play.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Didn't do anything on it than the five point five
- 26:06Speaker 2: percent on the power play in the playoffs.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Just uh yeah, I mean We've we've been beating a
- 26:10Speaker 1: dead horse with that all season long.
- 26:12Speaker 2: In this episode on this on this podcast, Jonathan, so
- 26:15Speaker 2: I just, uh, you know, it is what it is.
- 26:18Speaker 2: And then Dollean takes a penalty at the end of
- 26:19Speaker 2: the period, uh, which negated the rest of that power
- 26:22Speaker 2: play to start the second. But you know, you thought
- 26:25Speaker 2: one one out of the first period.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I didn't.
- 26:26Speaker 2: I didn't hate it, but I felt like the Sabers
- 26:28Speaker 2: had a missed opportunity, uh to really, you know, either
- 26:31Speaker 2: get more of a lead there or at least just
- 26:34Speaker 2: have more confidence, because I felt like Montreal swung the
- 26:36Speaker 2: momentum in their favor by the end of the first Yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I agree too. I just you let them back into
- 26:41Speaker 3: the game there, and then it's just you can't. I
- 26:44Speaker 3: don't think you can do that. I think what we
- 26:46Speaker 3: learned from that Boston series is the power of going
- 26:49Speaker 3: up two goals. Two goals. I know everyone's like, oh,
- 26:52Speaker 3: it's the most dangerous lead in hockey. I feel like,
- 26:55Speaker 3: just in general, across the board in these playoffs so far,
- 26:58Speaker 3: it feels like if you can get up on somebody,
- 27:01Speaker 3: you can manage the game a lot better. You're not
- 27:04Speaker 3: chasing it and everybody else who is chasing it. It
- 27:06Speaker 3: kind of wears you down, makes you grab the stick
- 27:09Speaker 3: a little bit tighter. You just can't quite make things
- 27:13Speaker 3: happen the same way when you're chasing a game as
- 27:14Speaker 3: opposed to when you're attacking from a position of strength.
- 27:18Speaker 3: So I don't know, I agree with you. I really
- 27:21Speaker 3: wanted to see Buffalo get either a two to zero
- 27:24Speaker 3: lead or even a two to one lead, just to
- 27:26Speaker 3: see where things could have gone and if they could
- 27:27Speaker 3: have kept the momentum rolling down the hill as opposed
- 27:31Speaker 3: to what we saw, where it seems like they kind
- 27:33Speaker 3: of every once in a while just get hemmed in
- 27:35Speaker 3: and then it's a scramble. Then it's lying battling, which
- 27:40Speaker 3: I can appreciate his battle. I can appreciate his fight.
- 27:42Speaker 3: I know how good he is on the road, But
- 27:45Speaker 3: I don't know. Something's got to shake up. I think
- 27:47Speaker 3: in that lineup and in that room, and I'm starting
- 27:49Speaker 3: to look at maybe the goaltending position and maybe is
- 27:52Speaker 3: it time to go back to UPL. But I don't
- 27:55Speaker 3: even know if UPL is better suited to deal with
- 27:57Speaker 3: some of the goals we saw right Like, I don't
- 28:00Speaker 3: know what do you do on that sleev Costki goal
- 28:01Speaker 3: when he's sitting there all alone, like front and center
- 28:04Speaker 3: in Broadway.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean again, Lindy Ruff has sort of rode
- 28:08Speaker 2: the hot hand all year long with the three goalies
- 28:10Speaker 2: when you had Colton Nellisen to that. But again, like
- 28:12Speaker 2: Lions given them an opportunity to win. He came up
- 28:14Speaker 2: with some big saves in that second period as well,
- 28:16Speaker 2: or it might have could have even been worse by
- 28:18Speaker 2: the end of it. Montreal gets four straight goals there
- 28:21Speaker 2: between the end of the first and then the second period.
- 28:24Speaker 2: The power play goal by Coffield after Greenway's stick had broke,
- 28:28Speaker 2: so it was basically a five on three. Coffield just
- 28:30Speaker 2: kind of found the puck in the slot there buried
- 28:33Speaker 2: it to give the Habs a two to one lead
- 28:35Speaker 2: there on the man advantage and for Coffield finally waking
- 28:38Speaker 2: him up, which is not good for the Sabers. If
- 28:40Speaker 2: number thirteen, the best goal scorer in the National Hockey
- 28:43Speaker 2: League this year, gets going, could have been worse. The
- 28:45Speaker 2: Sabers got a break when then had scored, but they
- 28:49Speaker 2: ruled that his stick had pushed Lion into the net,
- 28:53Speaker 2: but the puck was still loose. I thought that was
- 28:56Speaker 2: a goal, So I think the Sabers got lucky on
- 28:58Speaker 2: that one. That was another Montreal goal that sort of
- 29:00Speaker 2: got called back, and then Stanley turned the puck over
- 29:03Speaker 2: in the neutral zone. The puck got shipped back out
- 29:05Speaker 2: and we know, you know, his deficiencies, you know, in
- 29:09Speaker 2: the skating department, but Volano was able to beat him
- 29:12Speaker 2: to the puck and then finds bull Duke out front
- 29:14Speaker 2: to make a three to one, and then Mallenstein, as
- 29:16Speaker 2: we mentioned, boldover Dobish there. It only resulted in a
- 29:19Speaker 2: two minute power play, and then that resulted in that
- 29:22Speaker 2: Slavkoffski goal, as you mentioned, just standing right in the
- 29:24Speaker 2: blue paint, nobody around him, tips in the the lane,
- 29:27Speaker 2: Hudson shot and just like that, the Sabers are shell
- 29:30Speaker 2: shocked and it's four to one after you know, what
- 29:32Speaker 2: was what was a one to one game after the
- 29:35Speaker 2: first and after the second. You know, I know Dallen
- 29:37Speaker 2: ended up getting that that power play goal with Benson
- 29:40Speaker 2: standing in front, but it's four to two after the second,
- 29:43Speaker 2: and I didn't have any really good feelings even when
- 29:46Speaker 2: Dahlin scored that power play goal.
- 29:49Speaker 3: I see, I did feel pretty decent the way they
- 29:51Speaker 3: came out in the third period. But I was watching
- 29:54Speaker 3: the game, and I was sitting there saying, like, where
- 29:56Speaker 3: was this all?
- 29:56Speaker 6: Game?
- 29:57Speaker 3: Like, you cannot wait. You're in the second round of
- 30:00Speaker 3: the playoffs. You cannot wait this long to get to
- 30:03Speaker 3: your game. You have to if you're going to score
- 30:06Speaker 3: goals in the first minute of the game, you have
- 30:08Speaker 3: to keep that momentum roll and keep that ball rolling.
- 30:10Speaker 3: And they just they just didn't find it. And I
- 30:14Speaker 3: you know, I know Dleen looks bad on the score
- 30:17Speaker 3: sheet with the minus two. I thought Dleen played really
- 30:20Speaker 3: really well. I thought he activated really well. I thought
- 30:22Speaker 3: he had some moments where he was a real leader
- 30:26Speaker 3: and a driver on the ice for his team. You know,
- 30:29Speaker 3: maybe I'm just trying to be a captain positive here
- 30:31Speaker 3: and I'm missing something that was some glaring mistakes. And
- 30:36Speaker 3: they could obviously let us know all the listeners, the
- 30:38Speaker 3: fans can let us know. But for me, Dawleen did
- 30:41Speaker 3: everything I could ask of him as a captain. I
- 30:44Speaker 3: thought he stirred it up between whistles really well, through
- 30:48Speaker 3: some good hits, through some good reverse hits. But you know,
- 30:51Speaker 3: you needed more from doleen Byrom has had a really
- 30:55Speaker 3: quiet series. After how good he was against Boston, he
- 30:58Speaker 3: has been really really quiet Owen power. I'm not gonna
- 31:04Speaker 3: I think there's enough people who pile on Owen power
- 31:06Speaker 3: and what. I love to see him on the score sheet, absolutely,
- 31:10Speaker 3: But I don't necessarily think that he's been awful either.
- 31:14Speaker 3: He's just kind of been there. He's playing like a
- 31:17Speaker 3: fourth defenseman. But when the guy's got the skill set
- 31:20Speaker 3: that he's gone, I wouldn't mind seeing a little more
- 31:23Speaker 3: out of Owen Power going forward, you know.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Yeah, no, he was like I'm looking at a lot
- 31:28Speaker 2: of the forwards right now. But as you mentioned, yes,
- 31:30Speaker 2: after how productive the Sabers dcorp Has been during the
- 31:33Speaker 2: regular season and how you know effective it was in
- 31:36Speaker 2: that first round, you're wondering, Okay, when's it gonna start
- 31:39Speaker 2: coming here? We see what Hudson's doing on the Montreal
- 31:42Speaker 2: side and how he's controlling play from that power plan.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I know, Dawlien had that really nice power play goal
- 31:46Speaker 2: where he took that stutter step, you know, waited it
- 31:48Speaker 2: out and then threw it on net and Dobich didn't
- 31:51Speaker 2: even see that puck because Ben's standing up front. They
- 31:53Speaker 2: just needed to do more of that, and Dallian's obviously
- 31:57Speaker 2: nominated or a finalist for the Norris Trophy, and we
- 31:59Speaker 2: had journ reporter the Sabers a leacher report just talking
- 32:03Speaker 2: about how good Dahlen's been and we know what everything
- 32:06Speaker 2: that he's dealt with, it's just it's hard to ask
- 32:08Speaker 2: him to to kind of carry the load on that end.
- 32:12Speaker 2: He gets the power play goal, but it's four to
- 32:13Speaker 2: two months for all after two and then it's a
- 32:15Speaker 2: two on one with the Sabers sort of trying to
- 32:18Speaker 2: push there. Textsia and Deno go down on the two
- 32:21Speaker 2: on one. Doc gets the puck back O front of
- 32:23Speaker 2: the rebound. No one's around lyon to help him scrambling around.
- 32:27Speaker 2: It's five to two, and then new Hook gets the
- 32:30Speaker 2: de facto empty net goal when Dalen was hooking him on,
- 32:33Speaker 2: which is a penalty which results in basically a goal
- 32:36Speaker 2: there for new Hook in the empty net and the
- 32:39Speaker 2: final six to two on that on the night, I
- 32:42Speaker 2: know again, you just I just wanted to see a
- 32:45Speaker 2: little bit more fight. I know the shots are very
- 32:48Speaker 2: lopsided and take that with discretion in the third peer
- 32:50Speaker 2: with Montreal playing with the lead, but yeah, just not
- 32:53Speaker 2: not a great performance for Buffalo tonight. And I know
- 32:57Speaker 2: that you know Malenstein doing what he did, it was
- 33:01Speaker 2: you know, borderline dirty. But they need to get in
- 33:03Speaker 2: the face more Adobe is. She's obviously feeling it right now.
- 33:05Speaker 2: He's got the swagger a little bit cocky as well,
- 33:08Speaker 2: I must say, you know, with just you know, his
- 33:10Speaker 2: goal celebrations and how he's talking a lot to the
- 33:13Speaker 2: Sabers opposing players, you can tell he's really feeling it
- 33:16Speaker 2: right now, and the Sabers sort of have to get
- 33:18Speaker 2: him off his game if they're gonna have a chance
- 33:20Speaker 2: to get back into this thing.
- 33:22Speaker 3: And to be fair, we loved that same energy when
- 33:24Speaker 3: it was Alex Line given that energy to Boston in
- 33:27Speaker 3: the first round. Right, So it's not something that Sabers
- 33:30Speaker 3: fans should be shocked that we're seeing. It shouldn't be
- 33:33Speaker 3: anything that we're upset about seeing. You mentioned the Mallenstine play.
- 33:37Speaker 3: You know, I was, I was running my mouth. I
- 33:40Speaker 3: was saying, I'm watching the game with my wife, and
- 33:42Speaker 3: I was saying that somebody's just got to go and
- 33:45Speaker 3: crash the crease. You gotta get in there, you gotta
- 33:47Speaker 3: go and slam his cupboards a little bit rattle the
- 33:49Speaker 3: kitchen sink a little bit, see if you can knock
- 33:51Speaker 3: him off his game, and maybe instead of going after Dovish,
- 33:55Speaker 3: what really needs to happen is, look, if Logan's Stanley
- 34:00Speaker 3: is gonna play eleven minutes and be a minus one
- 34:03Speaker 3: and take twelve pims, I need to see that guy
- 34:08Speaker 3: grab somebody and beat the hell out of him. Which
- 34:12Speaker 3: I know we're not really supposed to encourage that sort
- 34:13Speaker 3: of stuff in hockey this night anymore. I get it.
- 34:16Speaker 3: But you have a guy like that who's a monster, and.
- 34:20Speaker 1: And you know what Jack Guy's doing on the Montreal side, Well.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Yeah, you've got Jack Guy on the other side doing
- 34:24Speaker 3: the same thing. And you have kessel Rings sitting there
- 34:27Speaker 3: as well. So like, even if if Stanley breaks his
- 34:31Speaker 3: hand on somebody's face on Montreal, I'm confident that kessel
- 34:35Speaker 3: Ring could come in and at least give you five
- 34:37Speaker 3: to six minutes and get you through it, if not more.
- 34:40Speaker 3: I really don't love that that guy had didn't get
- 34:43Speaker 3: the opportunity down the line to be another tower back there.
- 34:47Speaker 3: But I mean, Connor Timmons was so reliable and still
- 34:49Speaker 3: is in my mind, not really doing anything to cost himself.
- 34:52Speaker 3: I know he's minus one today, took a penalty today
- 34:55Speaker 3: in today's game, But I don't know. I just think
- 34:58Speaker 3: he got guys like Greenway, got guys like Stanley. Somebody
- 35:01Speaker 3: needs to grab somebody and make an example out of
- 35:04Speaker 3: them on Montreal, And even if you lose that fight,
- 35:07Speaker 3: if it gives a little bit of life to your team,
- 35:09Speaker 3: it gives you something to write home about. Like it
- 35:13Speaker 3: just feels like they're a little bit too passive with
- 35:16Speaker 3: their opportunities to be aggressive. And that doesn't mean also
- 35:19Speaker 3: that I want them running around either, because when I
- 35:22Speaker 3: reflect on Game two, I felt like out of the
- 35:24Speaker 3: gate they ran the Sabers ran around a little bit
- 35:26Speaker 3: too much where they were looking to be on kill,
- 35:29Speaker 3: hit everything in sight, and Montreal focused on playing the
- 35:32Speaker 3: puck and that's how they got out ahead early in
- 35:34Speaker 3: game two. Tonight, I thought Buffalo was a little bit
- 35:37Speaker 3: better about playing the puck early and trying to generate chances,
- 35:41Speaker 3: but they still ended up falling flat. And I'm like, like,
- 35:45Speaker 3: somebody's got to do something here, And you mentioned Benson
- 35:47Speaker 3: and Don like it can't just be them, Like somebody
- 35:50Speaker 3: has got to get dragged into a fight. I don't love.
- 35:54Speaker 3: I don't know how you're finding it, but I'm finding
- 35:56Speaker 3: the refs are way too quick to break everything up up. Like,
- 36:00Speaker 3: I don't know what they're really afraid of is gonna happen.
- 36:04Speaker 3: But like, I think some of the silliness that you
- 36:05Speaker 3: saw at the end of the game could have been
- 36:07Speaker 3: prevented by maybe letting a couple of guys go at
- 36:10Speaker 3: it earlier in the night. I don't know, That's just
- 36:12Speaker 3: kind of what I was feeling, what I was seeing.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I felt like they were just jumping on things too quickly,
- 36:16Speaker 3: trying to keep the lid on the game, instead of
- 36:18Speaker 3: just maybe letting two guys go to center ice and
- 36:21Speaker 3: settle it themselves.
- 36:22Speaker 1: You know, I think there was a mandate from the league.
- 36:25Speaker 2: I think it's CBC brought that up on the broadcast,
- 36:28Speaker 2: that they wanted to see the series have a little
- 36:31Speaker 2: bit more decorum. I guess you could say so that
- 36:34Speaker 2: I think that's why the rest were breaking it up.
- 36:35Speaker 2: But yeah, we saw with the Malenstein, you know, running Dobish,
- 36:38Speaker 2: how what that created, and then at the end of
- 36:40Speaker 2: the game we saw that you know, full line brawl.
- 36:42Speaker 2: It was again other than Doan Benson and Malenstein. I
- 36:46Speaker 2: didn't see enough of that from everybody else tonight.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Mm hm No.
- 36:50Speaker 3: It's like, like, gloves have to hit ice, Like even
- 36:54Speaker 3: if it's just two guys, If it's two guys that
- 36:56Speaker 3: square off right, and those are the only drop gloves
- 36:58Speaker 3: that drop all night, you can live with that. You
- 37:01Speaker 3: can deal with that and a say in a playoff
- 37:03Speaker 3: hockey game, and I get what the league is saying,
- 37:05Speaker 3: I get it whatever, but that's also how you end
- 37:07Speaker 3: up with a Charlie McAvoy incident like we saw at
- 37:09Speaker 3: the end of the series, where he's starting to swing
- 37:11Speaker 3: a stick around after what he feels like was dirty,
- 37:14Speaker 3: after he was dirty all series too, right, So to me,
- 37:17Speaker 3: I don't know. I guess I have an old school
- 37:19Speaker 3: mentality and I feel like maybe there's still a room
- 37:24Speaker 3: for that, or maybe the Tampa game is still lingering
- 37:26Speaker 3: in the back of my brain for what I want
- 37:29Speaker 3: to see out of this team and what I want
- 37:30Speaker 3: to see out of hockey when things are getting a
- 37:32Speaker 3: little out of control. But I don't know. I just
- 37:35Speaker 3: I need more fight from the boys. I need a
- 37:37Speaker 3: little bit more as much as I need the fight
- 37:40Speaker 3: I come back to. It's got to be the quickness,
- 37:42Speaker 3: like we need to see pucks off stick really quick.
- 37:45Speaker 3: I just feel like they're hesitating, they're thinking a little
- 37:48Speaker 3: too much. Maybe they're thinking they're looking for that pretty pass.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Worry about getting that pretty pass when the puck is
- 37:53Speaker 3: below the dots in the other end. You got to
- 37:55Speaker 3: get it to there first and then you can start
- 37:57Speaker 3: to maybe take your time and set something up.
- 38:00Speaker 2: And we know Montreal has the combatants to be able
- 38:02Speaker 2: to want to drop the gloves too, So if that's
- 38:04Speaker 2: what the Savers got to do to try to turn
- 38:06Speaker 2: momentum in the series, you're right, and they have to
- 38:08Speaker 2: be able to not not be so indecisive with the puck,
- 38:12Speaker 2: especially on the power play, be able to you watch
- 38:15Speaker 2: the way Montreal moved it around. And again, that five
- 38:17Speaker 2: man unit is really lethal, and we saw it tonight
- 38:20Speaker 2: with their two power play goals. And again, the Savers
- 38:23Speaker 2: have to stop taking bad penalties. They took an offensive
- 38:26Speaker 2: zone penalty that resulted in a goal tonight. So again,
- 38:29Speaker 2: a lot a lot on the tape for Lindy Ruff
- 38:31Speaker 2: to be able to learn from and adjust from, because
- 38:33Speaker 2: we know Marty Saint Louis is going to have his
- 38:35Speaker 2: team ready come Tuesday, we'll have to see with Lindy Ruff.
- 38:37Speaker 2: We're gonna take qui commercial break on the show today
- 38:39Speaker 2: we're to come back. We're gonna hear from head coach

- 44:02Speaker 2: of ninety seven to seven hits FM back with you,
- 44:04Speaker 2: continuing to break down this Sabers six to two loss
- 44:06Speaker 2: in Game three of their second round Stanley Cup playoff
- 44:09Speaker 2: matchup against the Montreal Canadians. Jonathan, I know we're gonna
- 44:11Speaker 2: go to head coach Lindy Rough here in just a
- 44:14Speaker 2: moment here.
- 44:14Speaker 1: But again, if you're the Sabers, you got to.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Look forward to to Tuesday night because if you go
- 44:20Speaker 2: down three to one, that's gonna be that's gonna be tough,
- 44:22Speaker 2: because then you have to win the next three, five, six,
- 44:25Speaker 2: and seven, two of them at home. But then you know,
- 44:27Speaker 2: you got to go back to the Bell Center pivotal
- 44:30Speaker 2: Game four, the swing game. It's either gonna be two
- 44:32Speaker 2: two and you've got the best of three on home ice,
- 44:35Speaker 2: or you're gonna be down three to one and you've
- 44:37Speaker 2: got to run the gauntlet.
- 44:39Speaker 3: Yeah, and I don't it's not it's so funny, Like
- 44:42Speaker 3: I don't know if it's just you know, after how
- 44:45Speaker 3: many years of not having any playoff action to watch
- 44:48Speaker 3: or whatever, I still remain positive. Like I know, I've
- 44:52Speaker 3: kind of been sour on a few things here and there,
- 44:55Speaker 3: but to me. They're not hard things to fix, you know,
- 44:59Speaker 3: I've seeing the guys do enough. You know, I don't
- 45:02Speaker 3: think we're asking them to do things they haven't done
- 45:04Speaker 3: already before. Like I say, if the Sabers play their game,
- 45:08Speaker 3: there's no reason they can't win Game four. And if
- 45:12Speaker 3: they win Game four and it's two two going back
- 45:14Speaker 3: to Buffalo, it's a whole new series.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Yeah it is.
- 45:18Speaker 2: And again I'm still positive that this season has already
- 45:21Speaker 2: been a win. You broke a fourth season playoff drout,
- 45:24Speaker 2: you won the Atlantic Division, you won a round. But again,
- 45:27Speaker 2: when the team is so good right now and the
- 45:28Speaker 2: path is there, you know, with certain teams out or
- 45:32Speaker 2: not even in it this year, you just wonder about
- 45:34Speaker 2: what could be if they could, you know, get to
- 45:36Speaker 2: that next round against Carolina, who look to be you know,
- 45:38Speaker 2: the class of the East obviously as the number one seed.
- 45:41Speaker 2: But again, it's just tough. But again, Montreal is a
- 45:44Speaker 2: really fun team to watch and another up and coming team. Uh,
- 45:47Speaker 2: these two teams that think are gonna be playoff teams
- 45:49Speaker 2: for a very long time to come. And I just
- 45:51Speaker 2: love watching Montreal play as well as hard as it
- 45:53Speaker 2: is as a Sabers supporter and trying to analyze the
- 45:57Speaker 2: game on the Saber side watching Moncher all plays a
- 45:59Speaker 2: lot of on at the same time. So I got
- 46:01Speaker 2: a hand it to Marty Saint Louis Club. They came
- 46:03Speaker 2: out to play tonight and h and they gave it
- 46:05Speaker 2: to the Sabers, So I think I think on that note, well,
- 46:09Speaker 2: we'll go to Sabers head coach Lindy Ruff with his
- 46:11Speaker 2: postgame thoughts brought to you by Wild Bills out of
- 46:13Speaker 2: Repair helping customers stay safe and confident on the road
- 46:16Speaker 2: in the Agresson's twenty twelve in honor of the late
- 46:18Speaker 2: William Robert Hunter. Let me get the screen shared here
- 46:21Speaker 2: and we'll get to head coach Lindy Ruff with his
- 46:24Speaker 2: postgame thoughts.
- 46:25Speaker 9: Next up, to defend control. To face a group like
- 46:28Speaker 9: slav Costky caught field, Layne Hudson Ni Suzuki.
- 46:34Speaker 6: Have to be smarter. You know we took five of
- 46:38Speaker 6: his own penalties. You know, our discipline for that wasn't
- 46:42Speaker 6: wasn't good enough. He let them operate five on four
- 46:47Speaker 6: and you know we end up with a broken stick
- 46:49Speaker 6: penalty killing goal against. And you give them that much time,
- 46:54Speaker 6: they're going to get opportunities.
- 46:57Speaker 4: What's going on with Jason Zucker. He was pretty well,
- 47:00Speaker 4: he just really.
- 47:02Speaker 6: He got caught, you know, not being on the number
- 47:04Speaker 6: one power play and then when all the penalty killing.
- 47:07Speaker 6: You know, I think you sat there quite a while,
- 47:08Speaker 6: so you know, I tried to keep I tried to
- 47:13Speaker 6: get the guys that were up and run and just
- 47:15Speaker 6: keep them out there. That's that. Yeah, Physically it's good.
- 47:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Lindy Teacher said, you guys just became too emotional,
- 47:23Speaker 4: even Keel.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Even Keel has been a strength to viewers, But did
- 47:27Speaker 2: you see your group get too emotional tonight?
- 47:29Speaker 6: I guess we've made some uncharacteristic decisions with the puck
- 47:34Speaker 6: that we haven't made. You know, even through the six
- 47:37Speaker 6: games with Boston. You know, you look at the one
- 47:41Speaker 6: goal easy play in the neutro zone. It should be
- 47:45Speaker 6: an easy pass to Krebs. We missed the player by
- 47:49Speaker 6: big and mouth. They go the other way and it's
- 47:52Speaker 6: in the back of our net. Our puck play, I've
- 47:55Speaker 6: talked about that the first couple of games. Our puck
- 47:57Speaker 6: play still isn't to a level that I'd like. Lindy,
- 48:03Speaker 6: what were the teams were you guys were doing when
- 48:06Speaker 6: you were adding success that you were getting away from
- 48:08Speaker 6: right now, just everything we're you know, we've, like I said,
- 48:13Speaker 6: are some of our puck decisions haven't been good, but
- 48:16Speaker 6: some of the discipline in the in the game. You know,
- 48:20Speaker 6: maybe I do disagree with maybe a couple of calls,
- 48:23Speaker 6: but I think every night somebody's going to disagree with
- 48:25Speaker 6: a call here there. Our discipline is something that go
- 48:31Speaker 6: to Game six in Boston. Score, Yeah I didn't the
- 48:38Speaker 6: team didn't take a penalty.
- 48:42Speaker 3: I know you didn't score, But those first eight minutes
- 48:44Speaker 3: of the third period, is that the takeaway offensively?
- 48:47Speaker 9: To get back to that the for check, Well, we got.
- 48:49Speaker 6: The best start we could get to the game, and
- 48:53Speaker 6: then again we're we're breaking breaking a couple of bucks
- 48:57Speaker 6: out and we made some mill of ill advised play,
- 49:00Speaker 6: some bad decisions that we haven't been making. So Montreal
- 49:05Speaker 6: is a good team. They made us pay. They made
- 49:06Speaker 6: us pay for our mistakes.
- 49:09Speaker 4: Lindy was at the bad decisions that you're talking about
- 49:12Speaker 4: that led to some of their open men in the
- 49:14Speaker 4: offensive zone. They did seemed like.
- 49:15Speaker 1: They had quite a few.
- 49:17Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, we've been a good defensive team, and
- 49:24Speaker 6: you know, we had let one breakdown, take us to
- 49:28Speaker 6: a place that we didn't need to get to inside
- 49:30Speaker 6: the zone. You know, as a kid, you talked, don't
- 49:35Speaker 6: follow up a bad pass. They had some of those plays.
- 49:40Speaker 4: You talk about, puck play, power plays all feed into it.
- 49:43Speaker 4: But just how surprised are you that you know pace
- 49:47Speaker 4: of play you guys want to go. But they really
- 49:49Speaker 4: drove me into the ground at points of that game.
- 49:52Speaker 6: Yeah, I said, they're a good team. But if if
- 49:55Speaker 6: you put the puck in the right place, you can
- 49:58Speaker 6: you can control some of the play. I really feel that.
- 50:03Speaker 6: You know, we feeled some of their some of their aggression,
- 50:06Speaker 6: and they get on you, they force some of those plays.
- 50:10Speaker 6: I give them a lot of credit. I said before
- 50:12Speaker 6: this started, they beat a hell of a team. They
- 50:16Speaker 6: are a hell of a team. Don't take them for granted.
- 50:19Speaker 6: Now if we if we don't realize it now, we're
- 50:23Speaker 6: never going to realize it.
- 50:25Speaker 9: Lindy, your team split the first two games in Buffalo.
- 50:29Speaker 9: How important is it to salvage a split here in Montreal?
- 50:32Speaker 9: What does your team have to do to split these
- 50:33Speaker 9: two games?
- 50:34Speaker 4: Now?
- 50:34Speaker 6: We really have to just just worry about one game,
- 50:38Speaker 6: you know, the next game again, you look at some
- 50:43Speaker 6: areas of the game improved. I thought our power play
- 50:46Speaker 6: did everything but score again on the next couple of
- 50:50Speaker 6: power plays. You know, you got to give their goaltender
- 50:53Speaker 6: a lot of a lot of credit. He made some
- 50:55Speaker 6: great saves, especially when we are trying to make it
- 50:58Speaker 6: four to three. That power play was inside the zone
- 51:01Speaker 6: and so that improved the discipline to not take as
- 51:06Speaker 6: many penalties. We'll get more of our players involved in
- 51:09Speaker 6: the game, so that's got improved too.
- 51:13Speaker 2: There was Sabers head coach Lindy Roff on the Wild
- 51:16Speaker 2: Bills Auto Repair post game as always video courtesy of
- 51:19Speaker 2: x dot Com, Slash Buffalo, Sabers MSG, and the National
- 51:22Speaker 2: Hockey League. Jonathan, what were your takeaways from what Lindy
- 51:25Speaker 2: said there.
- 51:26Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's been He's been very consistent
- 51:30Speaker 3: with his messaging all playoffs a long never too high
- 51:33Speaker 3: and never too low puck play. We've heard it since
- 51:36Speaker 3: basically day one of the seasons, since training camp. That
- 51:38Speaker 3: has been the focus of this team. And when they
- 51:41Speaker 3: do things the right way and when they execute to
- 51:45Speaker 3: Lindy's vision, to the full coaching staff as vision, we
- 51:48Speaker 3: know what they're capable of and they just didn't quite
- 51:52Speaker 3: get there tonight. They didn't get there in game two?
- 51:56Speaker 3: Can they get there in game four? There's no reason
- 51:58Speaker 3: they can't. There isn't there's no reason that they can't
- 52:01Speaker 3: because there are so many little things that like if
- 52:04Speaker 3: they just clean them up, why not?
- 52:08Speaker 4: Right?
- 52:08Speaker 3: So again, I don't want to harp on the guy.
- 52:12Speaker 3: I'm looking at the time on ice sheet. I know
- 52:15Speaker 3: he gave the reason of oh, you know, Zucker's not
- 52:18Speaker 3: playing on the power play anymore, so he's not getting
- 52:20Speaker 3: as much ice time or whatever. Look at his linemates
- 52:24Speaker 3: McLeod and Quinn, who I know. Mcloud's a good face
- 52:28Speaker 3: off guy. Quinn's the shooter, he's got potential for like that.
- 52:31Speaker 3: But you know they had three minutes more ice timey
- 52:36Speaker 3: on even strength than Zucker did. So if Sucker's not trusted,
- 52:40Speaker 3: or if he can't get the work in, I just
- 52:43Speaker 3: I just wonder what moving Carrick up the lineup, moving
- 52:47Speaker 3: Kozak back in, having some guys who can really start
- 52:51Speaker 3: the Sabers off well, especially in the offensive zone by
- 52:55Speaker 3: winning some face offs. So what that could do to
- 52:57Speaker 3: this lineup going forward. It's probably overthinking it. I'm probably
- 53:00Speaker 3: reinventing the wheel. But I will also point out the
- 53:05Speaker 3: ten game win streak was without Jason Zucker.
- 53:10Speaker 2: I do also want to give another another point for
- 53:12Speaker 2: Sabers fans think their teeth into. We know the black
- 53:15Speaker 2: aces that were recalled from the Rochester Americans. Could constant
- 53:18Speaker 2: Hellnius be a guy that gets in the lineup. We
- 53:20Speaker 2: saw what happened when Noah Austlin got back in the lineup,
- 53:23Speaker 2: and I know he's played more NHL games than Hellnius has.
- 53:26Speaker 2: But at this point, you know, as you mentioned, if
- 53:28Speaker 2: if they're not going to put Kozak back in the
- 53:30Speaker 2: lineup and they're going to try to take somebody out
- 53:33Speaker 2: just to kind of shake things up on that forward group.
- 53:35Speaker 2: You know, Hellnius had a great season for the for
- 53:38Speaker 2: the Amerks. So is he a guy I've seen on
- 53:40Speaker 2: on X just kind of quickly on the the postgame
- 53:44Speaker 2: reaction that he's a guy that Sabers fans are clamoring for.
- 53:47Speaker 2: But again, where do you put them? Do you put
- 53:49Speaker 2: them on the wing? Like what who do you split up?
- 53:52Speaker 1: Again?
- 53:52Speaker 2: It's a it's a tough decision, but I think Lindy's
- 53:55Speaker 2: got to make a change here in game four somewhere.
- 53:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree. I think something's got to change just
- 54:00Speaker 3: a little bit, you know, Like he's been so staunch
- 54:04Speaker 3: on keeping things the same when they're winning, but now
- 54:07Speaker 3: they've lost too in a row, so why not have
- 54:09Speaker 3: a shakeup, you know. I think a lot of people
- 54:13Speaker 3: point to UPL. I was quick to be like, maybe
- 54:16Speaker 3: UPL should start game three, and then I started to
- 54:19Speaker 3: really think about it. And Alex Line's a guy who
- 54:21Speaker 3: won ten games in a row on the road this year, right,
- 54:24Speaker 3: Like he is a road win merchant. So and I
- 54:27Speaker 3: don't really believe that had had the Sabers defensive structure
- 54:33Speaker 3: been stronger, I think the aggressive nature that Lion played
- 54:36Speaker 3: with tonight would have actually been to their benefit. But
- 54:39Speaker 3: they didn't give him the support to play the way
- 54:42Speaker 3: that he needed to and that led to a lot
- 54:45Speaker 3: of you a lot of goals, but it led to
- 54:47Speaker 3: the goals that we did see where maybe you want
- 54:50Speaker 3: to see us say from line or whatever. I just
- 54:53Speaker 3: there's work to be done. But there's no reason this
- 54:55Speaker 3: team can't do the work, which is a great spot
- 54:57Speaker 3: to be in.
- 54:58Speaker 2: We saw them do it in Game one, right, They
- 55:00Speaker 2: had a great Game one against Montreal again, I knew
- 55:03Speaker 2: Montreal would adjust coming off that seven game series against
- 55:05Speaker 2: Tampa Bay, you know, a gauntlet of a series against
- 55:08Speaker 2: another great team that Lindy mentioned in that post game too.
- 55:10Speaker 2: You know, they beat a heck heck of a team.
- 55:12Speaker 2: They are a heck of a team and the Sabers
- 55:14Speaker 2: can't take them lightly. Matthew Fairburn says that Lindy Ruffs
- 55:17Speaker 2: said the game had nothing to do with Alex Lyons,
- 55:19Speaker 2: so again it sounds like he'll be back in the
- 55:22Speaker 2: net for game four. Again, like you mentioned, is UPL
- 55:26Speaker 2: going to make that big of a difference. I don't know,
- 55:27Speaker 2: but they've had success in you know, riding the hot
- 55:30Speaker 2: hand and when somebody has an off game, they bring
- 55:32Speaker 2: in the other guy and they get a bounce back victory.
- 55:35Speaker 2: But I guess we'll have to wait and see for Tuesday.
- 55:37Speaker 2: On that we usually go do a player of the game.
- 55:39Speaker 2: It's tough to pick a player of the game in
- 55:41Speaker 2: a six to two lost, Jonathan, But in honor of
- 55:44Speaker 2: the Niger Dentri Clinic creating Natro Smiles in the Niagara
- 55:47Speaker 2: region for over twenty five years, who's a player you
- 55:49Speaker 2: just want to give a shout out to tonight.
- 55:51Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like we've talked a lot about Benson,
- 55:53Speaker 3: and we've talked a lot about We've talked a lot
- 55:57Speaker 3: about Down and their contributions on the front end. I
- 55:59Speaker 3: did mention that, even though the score sheet may not
- 56:03Speaker 3: reflect it, I thought that Dowling had a good game,
- 56:05Speaker 3: But I think I got to give some love to
- 56:07Speaker 3: steady Eddie. You know, in a game like this, when
- 56:11Speaker 3: you don't notice Mattia Samuelson, maybe that's a good thing.
- 56:16Speaker 3: You know, he had a shot on net, he had
- 56:17Speaker 3: two blocks, He threw five hits tonight. Zero's across the
- 56:21Speaker 3: board in terms of goals, assists, points, and plus minus
- 56:24Speaker 3: twenty three minutes on ice. Sometimes you just need one
- 56:27Speaker 3: of your defensemen to step up and be a steady Eddie,
- 56:29Speaker 3: and Mattia Samuelson really did a good job of holding
- 56:32Speaker 3: things down and making sure that he wasn't given Montreal
- 56:35Speaker 3: any life. As much as I would have loved to
- 56:36Speaker 3: see him get on the score sheet, sometimes in a
- 56:38Speaker 3: game like this, that's exactly what you need from a
- 56:40Speaker 3: guy like Mattia Samison.
- 56:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and we know the offensive production Samilson had this
- 56:47Speaker 2: season was the best in his national Hockey League career.
- 56:49Speaker 2: He had that big, big goal against Boston, but again
- 56:52Speaker 2: has been a little bit quiet on the score sheet since.
- 56:54Speaker 2: But again a reliable guy playing alongside Dolling. I'm gonna
- 56:58Speaker 2: give it to Benson tonight. You could give it to
- 56:59Speaker 2: him on Mostnight's kind of an easy answer and easy
- 57:02Speaker 2: cop out, but he was a guy I noticed on
- 57:04Speaker 2: a lot he was screened Dobish for Dleen's goal. He
- 57:08Speaker 2: had a few chances beside the net as well. He
- 57:10Speaker 2: was causing havoc, he was in the scrums. Number six
- 57:13Speaker 2: is just a warrior out there and a guy that
- 57:16Speaker 2: loves to get in under the other team's skin. And
- 57:18Speaker 2: he's been the heartbeat of the Sabers team as of late,
- 57:22Speaker 2: and and really you know, developing a you know, quite
- 57:25Speaker 2: the following here in Buffalo.
- 57:27Speaker 1: So I'm gonna give it to him tonight.
- 57:29Speaker 2: But it was nice see Dleen get on the score
- 57:31Speaker 2: sheeters and I see Thompson get on the score sheheet.
- 57:33Speaker 2: So those are your top guys, but you're gonna need
- 57:35Speaker 2: to see bounce back games from guys like talk.
- 57:37Speaker 1: Guys like Jack Quinn needs to get going.
- 57:39Speaker 2: We know he's a streaky scorer, but again, he's had
- 57:42Speaker 2: a lot of chances in the in the playoffs. Zucker,
- 57:45Speaker 2: if he's in there, got to have a bounce back
- 57:46Speaker 2: from him, and then guys like McLeod have to have
- 57:49Speaker 2: bounce back.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Norris.
- 57:50Speaker 2: We know he got taken off the top power play unit,
- 57:52Speaker 2: but him with with Benson and Don can be a
- 57:54Speaker 2: very effective line as well.
- 57:56Speaker 1: So there's a.
- 57:57Speaker 2: Lot that can be improved upon. Luckily, tonight's own only
- 58:00Speaker 2: one game. That's the other thing that you can take
- 58:02Speaker 2: away from a Jonathan is that they can wipe this
- 58:03Speaker 2: one away and if they come out with a victory
- 58:05Speaker 2: on Tuesday, you know, it's all squared up and nobody
- 58:08Speaker 2: will even you know, think about this game three and
- 58:10Speaker 2: then they have to go and win two of the
- 58:12Speaker 2: next three. So I said this thing was gonna go seven,
- 58:14Speaker 2: and you know, it looks like if the Sabers can
- 58:17Speaker 2: have a bounce back, we're on a crash course for
- 58:19Speaker 2: possibly that.
- 58:20Speaker 1: But it's just been fun to watch this so far.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Just frustrating game tonight for Buffalo and they got a
- 58:25Speaker 2: little bit exposed with some of their defensive deficiencies. But yeah,
- 58:30Speaker 2: I just I think that Lindy will have the team
- 58:32Speaker 2: ready to go after two really tough games here.
- 58:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think the one thing that I wish
- 58:38Speaker 3: we saw in this series that we did see in
- 58:41Speaker 3: the Boston series is a longer break, a two day off.
- 58:46Speaker 3: I really think two days off really helps this team.
- 58:49Speaker 3: I know they're young, and I know they've got speed
- 58:51Speaker 3: and all that sort of stuff, but I think you
- 58:53Speaker 3: look at Game one when they had a bit of
- 58:54Speaker 3: a break after the Boston series. You look at the
- 58:57Speaker 3: difference between the Game three and Game four of the
- 59:00Speaker 3: Boston series when there was that extended break between those
- 59:03Speaker 3: two games, and the Savers were able to really pile
- 59:05Speaker 3: on Boston in that game. For especially jump on them early.
- 59:09Speaker 3: I think a little bit extra rest because seems to
- 59:11Speaker 3: go a long way to reset the legs of the
- 59:13Speaker 3: Sabers and they're not gonna get that. So ultimate challenge
- 59:17Speaker 3: is gonna be on Tuesday. How do they come out.
- 59:20Speaker 3: Can they get on the score sheet early like they
- 59:21Speaker 3: did tonight, and can they keep the ball rolling downhill
- 59:24Speaker 3: and really back Montreal into a corner and make them
- 59:27Speaker 3: have to chase the game like they ended up having
- 59:30Speaker 3: to chase tonight, especially through the second period.
- 59:32Speaker 2: So final thought from you, Jonathan who would be the
- 59:35Speaker 2: guy you want to see in the lineup, and who
- 59:37Speaker 2: do you what do you want to see change to
- 59:38Speaker 2: go out a man?
- 59:42Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 59:43Speaker 3: Every time, I was so so gung ho to be like,
- 59:47Speaker 3: you gotta put up in you gotta get Kozak back
- 59:51Speaker 3: in there, you gotta get Zucker out of there, and
- 59:53Speaker 3: I just the more I think about it, I'm like,
- 59:56Speaker 3: it really comes down to your best guys being your
- 59:58Speaker 3: best guys. And I don't know who's battling through what
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: and dealing with what, but Tuck's got to shake it off.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: Tomarr's got to shake it off. We need to see
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: a little bit more. Jack Quinn has been so snake
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: bit like it's not even like I don't even really
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: have that much of a problem with his game because
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: I've watched that guy hit more posts like I think
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: I put a tweet out the other day I was like,
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: if that guy keeps hitting posts like that, he's gonna
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: take my job at Hits FM, like as a radio DJ,
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: because like I couldn't believe it, But yeah, honestly, you
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: just need your best guys to be your best guys.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: You can tweak the line up here and there, I
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: want to see the big boys be tough. I want
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: to see Stanley and Greenway start grabbing some guys, and
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: I want to see the best players be the best
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: players on the Sabers. And if that happens, there's no
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: reason that uh never mind seven, this could be a
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: Sabers winning six. And I still believe that.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they've got They've got every capability to
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: do that.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: We saw how this team responds all season long, and
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: you expect them to respond because if they don't, then
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: this series could be over in Montreal's favor quicker than
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: they expect. So yeah, the Sabers, Uh, we'll see what
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: kind of lineup changes, if there are any, come Tuesday.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna say I think constat Helnious gets in the lineup.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: I don't know where he's gonna play, but I just
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: have a I have a weird feeling that that the
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: black as for the Sabers up from Rochester is going
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: to get an opportunity because I think Austlin would have
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: been a guy in the lineup right now if he
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: didn't get injured.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: So I think he's huge right now.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: I think I think Collenius is going to bring you
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: know a little bit of like youthful.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Youthfulness, no playoff experience. Get him in there.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: See what you got in a in a first round
