- 0:12Hello friends. It's shown here.
- 0:14It is Tuesday, It is the 9th of April or the year is getting
- 0:20away from us, isn't it? Here we are already in the
- 0:23fourth month of the year. Crazy.
- 0:25And today, today is the day when finally, finally, David ascends
- 0:31to the throne of the whole of Israel.
- 0:33And there is nothing quite like it is today, you know?
- 0:37It's not like King Charles, who has a lovely coronation where he
- 0:41and he invents a quiche and we all eat quiche around the world
- 0:46celebrating it and watch it on telly.
- 0:48Now this is done by brute force, where they take the throne and
- 0:53then capture the land to rule from.
- 0:56It is the way it used to be, and I'm sure it is still the way it
- 1:00works in some tribal parts of the world today.
- 1:03And so that that is our reading for today.
- 1:06So let us hear how David ascends the throne and then continues
- 1:11his military dominance in that area to set up this dynasty so
- 1:17that God's work can be done. So let's do it Reading together
- 1:21Second Samuel, Chapter 5. Then all the tribes of Israel
- 1:36went to David at Hebron and told him we are your own flesh and
- 1:41blood. In the past, when Saul was our
- 1:43king, you were the one who really led the forces of Israel,
- 1:47and the Lord told you you will be the shepherd of my people,
- 1:51Israel. You will be Israel's leader.
- 1:55So there at Hebron, King David made a covenant before the Lord
- 2:00with all the elders of Israel, and they anointed him King of
- 2:04Israel. David was 30 years old when he
- 2:07began to reign, and he reigned 40 years in all.
- 2:11He had reigned over Judah from Hebron for seven years and six
- 2:15months, and from Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and
- 2:20Judah for 33 years. David then led his men to
- 2:25Jerusalem to fight against the Jebusites, the original
- 2:29inhabitants of the land who were living there.
- 2:32The Jebusites taunted David, saying here all never get in
- 2:36here. Even the blind and lame could
- 2:39keep you out, for the Jebusites thought they were safe.
- 2:43But David captured the fortress of Zion, which is now called the
- 2:47City of David. On the day of the attack, David
- 2:51said to his troops, I hate those lame and blind Jebusites.
- 2:56Whoever attacks them should strike by going into the city
- 3:00through the water tunnel. That is the origin of the
- 3:04saying. The blind and the lamb may not
- 3:06enter the house, so David made the fortress his home, and he
- 3:11called it the City of David. He extended the city, starting
- 3:16at the supporting terraces and working inward, and David became
- 3:21more and more powerful because the Lord God of Heaven's armies
- 3:26was with him. Then King Hiram of Tyre sent
- 3:31messengers to David along with cedar timber and carpenters and
- 3:36stone Masons, and they built David a palace.
- 3:40And David realised that the Lord had confirmed him as king over
- 3:44Israel and had blessed his Kingdom for the sake of his
- 3:47people, Israel. After moving from Hebron to
- 3:51Jerusalem, David married more concubines and wives, and they
- 3:56had more sons and daughters. These are the names of David's
- 4:00sons who are born in Jerusalem. Shamala Shobab, Nathan Solomon.
- 4:07Ibar, Elishia. Newfag, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada
- 4:15and Eliphalet. When the Philistines heard that
- 4:19David had been anointed king of Israel, they mobilised all their
- 4:23forces to capture him. But David was told they were
- 4:27coming, so he went into the stronghold.
- 4:30The Philistines arrived and spread out across the valley of
- 4:33Rephaim. Sir David asked the Lord.
- 4:36Should I go out to fight the Philistines?
- 4:39Will you hand them over to me? The Lord replied to David.
- 4:43Yes, go ahead. I will certainly hand them over
- 4:47to you. So David went to Baal Perazim
- 4:52and defeated the Philistines there.
- 4:54The Lord did it. David exclaimed.
- 4:57He burst through my enemies like a raging flood.
- 5:01So he named that place Baal Perazim, which means the Lord
- 5:06who bursts through the Philistines, had abandoned their
- 5:10idols there, so David and his men confiscated them.
- 5:14But after a while the Philistines returned and again
- 5:18spread out across the valley of Rephaim.
- 5:20And again David asked the Lord what to do.
- 5:24Do not attack them straight on, the Lord replied.
- 5:28Instead, circle around behind and attack them near the Poplar
- 5:32trees. When you hear a sound like
- 5:35marching feet in the tops of the Poplar trees, be on alert.
- 5:40That will be the signal that the Lord is moving ahead of you to
- 5:43strike down the Philistine army. So David did what the Lord
- 5:48commanded, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from
- 5:53Gibeon to Giza. Lord, you have your plans, and
- 6:06your plans are good. Your plans are foolproof, and
- 6:11your plans are for our benefit. Help us just to surrender to
- 6:17you. Not that our surrender means
- 6:19that you finally have permission to act, but that we don't
- 6:23continually colon ourselves into believing that we are the
- 6:27masters of the destinies around us.
- 6:30Here we see David acting on your behalf and giving credit to you.
- 6:37Lord, help us to continually, everyday relinquish our control
- 6:42and trust that you indeed walk before us, follow behind us, and
- 6:48flank around us every detail of our day, and that your plan
- 6:55unfolds around us, whether we like it or not, whether we
- 6:57acknowledge it or not, to help us acknowledge your sovereignty
- 7:01and all that happens so often. We won't understand what's
- 7:06happening and we will fight and struggle against the seeming
- 7:10inevitability of what's happening.
- 7:13But you've got it. It's in your hands.
- 7:17You know what's going on. Help us acknowledge you not just
- 7:22as Lord over what we choose to give you, but Lord over
- 7:26everything. You are a mighty God, and in
- 7:31your hands you hold the entirety of everything.
- 7:38Thank you that you are not just all powerful, but also loving
- 7:44and kind and gentle, and you hold us close to your heart.
- 7:52We are so grateful for your kindness to us, so we praise you
- 7:57and we worship you. And it's all in the name of
- 7:59Jesus that we pray these things I'm in.
