  We are going to be looking back at Salford City Wrestling from

  last Friday night. However, I am not alone.

  I am joined because I have actually written a little

  introduction which could go horribly wrong, but we'll we'll

  stick with it anyway. So tonight's special guest, they
• 0:49
  are the head of digital events for premier battles of the UK
• 0:55
  battle rap scene. He was the 7th best UK battle
• 1:01
  rapper of 2024. So because of that, he's
• 1:06
  appearing on the 7th episode and hoping to make it a magnificent
• 1:12

  This will be the thing that pushes me into top five, yes.

  That's that's where we're kind of going.

  So it's not the PWI we're going to move you up them rankings.

  I'm looking forward to this. Well, good to have you.

  So I'll ask you before we get into what happened Friday night,

  was this your first Salford show or was it the.

  Second, no, this was my very first Salford City wrestling
• 1:45
  show I've been living in up here in sunny Salford for the past
• 1:49
  year or so. I keep meaning to go to SCW and
• 1:52
  they have this horrible annoying habit of selling out every show
• 1:56
  so I keep missing out on getting tickets but luckily I was able
• 1:59
  to snatch some this time. It's it is a horrible thing.
• 2:03
  I found wrestling shows when they sell out.
• 2:06
  It's very impolite. The the bastards, but as and it
• 2:13
  was the sixth straight sell out for Salford, which in kind of
• 2:20
  this day and age of kind of entertainment and things, to
• 2:24
  have something selling out every time is a massive achievement.
• 2:32
  So we will. I mean, where's the best place
• 2:36
  to start? Well, I mean, like first thing I
• 2:39
  want to say, like selling out that venue in particular is
• 2:41
  impressive to me because it's not like they're running shows
• 2:43
  in a cupboard like the venue they're selling in.
• 2:47
  It's so nice. I love the the division between
• 2:50
  like the bar and the ring area. I like the distribution of
• 2:53
  seats, how roomy it is, how space it is, the stage set up.
• 2:57
  It just looks great. And I'm sure it will look great
• 3:00
  on camera as well. The the one thing I do love now
• 3:05
  with the entrances is how everyone is very well prepared
• 3:11
  to when they stand on the middle rope, because on the first show
• 3:17
  Bentley smashed his head off one of the beams above the ring.

  Yes, that's a very awkwardly placed beam on one side of the
• 3:25
  ring specifically. So there was one specific corner
• 3:30
  that like this is the top rope corner.
• 3:33
  The other one, you'll have your back to the camera.
• 3:36
  Don't really want that. If you can do the big thing, you
• 3:38
  want to have this other words like beam, beam.

  Now let's jump from here. Yeah, it's, it is great when you

  see the high Flyers especially kind of like Dave Burt where the
• 3:49
  first couple of shows he would go to do like a springboard drop
• 3:55
  kick from the top rope and then he would purposely look above
• 4:01
  and think, Nope, that ain't going to work for me, brother.

  I will go to the other side. So then they will obviously
• 4:10
  perform something and he will do the move from the other side
• 4:14
  where he has so much room to do it.

  It is a nice little quirk to have, I feel.

  I mean who wants massive venues with like plenty of space?

  I will say I thought people were very brave doing all the
• 4:31
  springboards they did because there were a couple of matches
• 4:33
  early where people would just be running the ropes and I was
• 4:37
  like, man, those ropes are really slack.
• 4:39
  I wonder why they haven't tightened them.
• 4:40
  And then someone hit them particularly hard and I swear
• 4:43
  the entire ring tilted tilt it's.
• 4:48
  I mean from from your view, because you is where I watched
• 4:52
  the first couple of shows you're from like the the stage kind of
• 4:57
  side where the the majority of the seats are.

  Yeah, I'm, I'm tucked away just below the production desk.

  Yes. So from there you don't really
• 5:08
  get a true sense of kind of like how the ring is when you're like
• 5:16
  where I am towards like the bar side, you kind of see how like
• 5:20
  the ring's been put together. It it is kind of on a almost on
• 5:28
  a bit of AAV in a way because you will see the ring kind of
• 5:33
  tilt. Oh, really?
• 5:36
  But in the sense of it's not dangerously kind of, I mean for
• 5:41
  those who have really. Yeah, I don't want to say like
• 5:43
  it came across as like slapdasher, unsafe or anything.
• 5:46
  Like the rings being perfectly put together, it was perfectly
• 5:48
  fine. But there was like I was just
• 5:49
  like, wow, those those ropes are taught in the way they need to
• 5:53
  be. Fair enough.
• 5:54
  I I've made this point many a time it's it does at times feel
• 6:00
  like the ring is going to tilt, but I mean thankfully the
• 6:04
  underneath of the ring holds it in place so that that is 1 very
• 6:09
  good thing at least. I will say this before the show
• 6:15
  started and I know if ref Steve Grimshaw is listening he might
• 6:20
  try and kill me, but he took the first bump within 8 minutes of
• 6:27
  the doors opening because he was stepping down from the staging
• 6:33
  area. Yes, I recall this distinctly.
• 6:36
  Trod on what was kind of like a footstool.
• 6:41
  It did not look safe remotely and as soon as Steve put 1 foot
• 6:48
  on it, it collapsed. However, I have never seen a man
• 6:54
  style it out so much in my life. I mean, he could easel.

  It was obviously. It's a terrible thing.
• 7:05
  It could have been a far worse incident.
• 7:10
  He could have, really. Injured himself.
• 7:13
  It was like a spiral tap where he landed on his feet.
• 7:19
  But the thing that we had referees on and Alfie doing the
• 7:30
  the photos and it's, I mean, it's almost like when you see
• 7:37
  like a bloke get kicked in the balls.
• 7:39
  When it's not you, it's hilarious.
• 7:43
  But when it is you, it ain't that much fun.
• 7:48
  And watching Refste, looking up with the sense of embarrassment,
• 7:56
  bless him. And having Reese immediately
• 7:59
  take his phone out and take a picture of him.

  I mean, bless him. Bless thee.

  I love thee to death. But yeah, in a way that was a
• 8:15
  blessing in disguise because if one of the wrestlers had come on
• 8:20
  that and injured themselves. 100%, yeah.

  Not that we're saying we don't think less of refs, but yeah,

  let's move on from that point. So as we said, this was the 6th
• 8:37
  show run by Salford City Wrestling.

  This was a really good show. I have to say.

  The show seemed to get better and better with Salford for
• 8:51
  those that can make them and if you can't, I very much advise
• 8:57
  you to try and get tickets for the next show.

  But we will come to that at the end of things.

  So the opening contest was Natalie Sykes, the 21st century
• 9:16
  liability, taking on Harley Harris.

  I thought this was a really solid opener.
• 9:25
  It was fantastic, like for an opener, like they had the crowd
• 9:29
  in the palm of their hands from the start.
• 9:31
  Like they're such big characters and they're such hard hitting
• 9:35
  characters as well. Like from the bell, like the
• 9:40
  crowd work that Natalie was doing with like the little kids
• 9:43
  and everything. And, and the kids were very well
• 9:46
  behaved. Like I've been to a lot of shows
• 9:48
  in the Southwest, like especially ones where they kind
• 9:51
  of encourage the kids to be like a bit rambunctious with the
• 9:54
  heels and things like, and I've seen some kids give some
• 9:58
  wrestlers a proper kicking, but the kids were really well
• 10:01
  behaved. I thought like there was the
• 10:05
  vibe was just great across the ground.
• 10:07
  The. Thing I noticed with kind of
• 10:10
  what the selfish shows of it's always like very well behaved
• 10:15
  and as the night goes on it can get progressively rowdy with the
• 10:21
  kids. Thankfully that did not happen.
• 10:25
  Saying that though, as much as kind of Harley Harris was a big
• 10:32
  kind of opponent for for Natalie Sykes, I think the true opponent
• 10:39
  that was far more fearsome for her was in the shape of a little
• 10:47
  girl that ran up to her. Yeah.
• 10:50
  From from the terrifying aura, it is one of those things of if
• 10:57
  a wrestler gets touched or gets hit, we always say do not do
• 11:02
  that. It's a Dick move.
• 11:04
  However, there are very, very small occasions and seeing a
• 11:12
  little girl who in fairness Nat started it first by saying loser
• 11:18
  to her and giving giving her abuse.
• 11:23
  The little girl, who was in the form of Scrappy Doo, I felt,
• 11:31
  began to give Natalie a bit of a thrashing and proceeded to chase
• 11:36
  her around the venue with Sykes getting back in the ring, not
• 11:43
  saying she was blown up from running around.
• 11:47
  Oh, she, she went at speed. I.
• 11:50
  Don't think she expected her to carry on being chased to rich,
• 11:55
  Harley says to her in the ring. Are you done?
• 11:58
  Are you ready? And Sykes kind of just looked up
• 12:02
  at her and began smiling and trying not to to laugh
• 12:08
  considering she was the heel in this match and almost had to
• 12:12
  take a few seconds just to compose herself.

  But besides that, yeah, I I am a massive fan of Natalie Sykes.
• 12:25
  I've seen her on a few shows now.
• 12:28
  She plays the the heel role superbly.
• 12:33
  She will always get the crowd booing her, if it's a bit quiet
• 12:38
  she will do something to try and generate a noise and again,
• 12:46
  sometimes the opening match can lead to the crowd not fully
• 12:52
  getting their voice so to speak. However, Sykes, with how she is
• 12:59
  anyway, managed to kind of like get the crowd going and in
• 13:05
  fairness, didn't need to try that hard because the crowd
• 13:09
  seems to be very much up for this from the beginning.

  I mean, so just kind of like looking through a couple of
• 13:21
  notes I've got, I will say, yeah.
• 13:24
  Just to just to follow on from your point, I so like I am very
• 13:28
  much ripping the Band-Aid off. I am diving back into the
• 13:30
  Northern Indies. God knows I had a bit of a dry
• 13:32
  spell for a while, so this was the first time I've seen Sykes
• 13:36
  and I just thought she was fantastic.
• 13:38
  She's one of those people that has such a good grasp on what
• 13:41
  her character is supposed to be that she conveys what she is,
• 13:46
  what role she plays. The second she's out the
• 13:48
  curtain, she comes out like, you know, back arched, head, back
• 13:52
  pouted lips, selfie phone and it's like right heel Boo.
• 13:57
  It immediately conveyed and she kind.
• 14:01
  Of like bratty kind of that's kind of where it feels like
• 14:07
  she's she started from, but she just built that character.
• 14:11
  Yeah, and 21st Lights 21st Century Liability is a banger of
• 14:15
  a nickname. That's so good.
• 14:17
  Plus, it only dawned on me the other week, kind of like the
• 14:21
  song is by Youngblood and I thought, Oh yeah, that's what
• 14:26
  she comes out to. 21st to which for me, a lot of things go over
• 14:32
  my head and this was one of them until it played on Spotify the
• 14:36
  other week as random and I thought, Oh yeah, that makes so
• 14:40
  much sense. Well, but that's me.
• 14:47
  I was going to say something I've, oh, that was it times.
• 14:51
  I will say I've seen her very loosely play kind of the
• 14:56
  babyface on one-on-one or two shows, and she does that.
• 15:03
  So she does that equally as well as being heel.
• 15:09
  But I think heel is her best kind of version of herself.
• 15:16
  It's just the way she can control a crowd, a match, even
• 15:23
  in like the heel style. Just whenever I see her on a
• 15:30
  card immediately I'm almost like here's my money because I know
• 15:35
  I'm going to be entertained for that duration 100%.
• 15:39
  And this was this was one of those matches.
• 15:43
  One thing I love from Sykes matches is when she will hit an
• 15:49
  RKO, she hits that move so beautifully.
• 15:55
  It's it's on a par nailer of how hardcore Holly used to do a drop
• 16:00
  kick. It's almost like there is
• 16:02
  nothing to him but he'd have that one drop kick which was
• 16:07
  beautiful to watch with Sykes. She has so much in her arsenal,
• 16:12
  but when she hits that it's always picture book.
• 16:17
  It's picture perfect. Is there anything you can recall
• 16:24
  from this match? But I just was going to say I
• 16:27
  think we should talk about how good Harley Harris was.
• 16:28
  That takes 2 to tango. Like like I thought Harley was
• 16:32
  fantastic as well as the babyface.
• 16:34
  Like the one where she's clearly the one that's like the heavier
• 16:38
  hitter. Her blows mean more, which is
• 16:40
  what you want from a babyface say, but he was meant to be in
• 16:43
  control of the match for 70%. You want to believe that when
• 16:46
  the babyface gets those shots here, they are doing more damage
• 16:50
  in the grand scheme of believability and everything.
• 16:53
  And like, you can fully believe the way that Harley responds to
• 16:57
  moves, her move set what it is, You can fully believe that one
• 17:01
  Harris blow is worth 10 psych explos.
• 17:03
  It's perfectly believable and she was fantastic.

  Harley, I think, I'm trying to think if she came on the 2nd or
• 17:10
  the 3rd show. I think it was the third show,
• 17:14
  but she's been a mainstay ever since and she's she's almost
• 17:20
  been. I don't want to say a lot
• 17:22
  because that's the wrong term, but with the like the women's
• 17:27
  story we've had, which has been effectively Alfie, Lilly Winter
• 17:32
  and Natalie Sykes, the inclusion of Harley almost as like from
• 17:38
  the outside into this story, she has played her part really well
• 17:44
  as well. And every match she's had so
• 17:48
  far, as you say, like one strike of hers feels like it's equal to
• 17:55
  about 5 or 10 of the others. But considering she's like the
• 18:03
  babyface, she's she does a great job as well of being in peril,
• 18:11
  especially if you've like you have sexes.
• 18:15
  They're much kind of smaller, maybe not so much stronger of
• 18:23
  the two. Wyler, yes, Wyler.
• 18:27
  I'm trying to think of other words, but words are failing me
• 18:31
  like most times. But Harley really puts the the
• 18:37
  opponent over as being really kind of I mean Sykes is
• 18:42
  impressive anyway, but Harley just makes whoever she's in the
• 18:47
  ring with that much better. And again, this was as much as
• 18:54
  Harley and Natalie together. They just always seem to put on
• 19:00
  really good matches. So I'm sure these two will will
• 19:06
  meet again down the down the road.

  The winner of this match, I will say was I can't even read my
• 19:19
  notes, was Harley Harris. Of course it was to which I
• 19:26
  completely forgot the main objective of this match where
• 19:31
  the if Natalie was to lose, she would be barred from ringside
• 19:38
  for the Queen of Salford final which was between Alfie and Lily
• 19:43
  Winter. More on that later.

  So Natalie loses, which means that she will be missing from
• 19:54
  the main event. Of course, we know that this is
• 19:57
  wrestling. Harris wins with a spinebuster
• 20:03
  and then followed up with a Pedigree for the 1-2 and the
• 20:09
  three. Match number 21.

  One thing I will say Peter, just before we go on to Match 2, you

  would not have those problems of not knowing why a match was
• 20:20
  happening and what was at stake because they do this incredible
• 20:24
  thing which I have not seen any other promotion do.

  want to encourage it. Every seat in the venue had a
• 20:35
  full rundown of the card, a welcome to why we're here, full

  card rundown, a little blurb of who everyone is, what momentum

  fighting stipulation. Full A4 sheet and it was

  fantastic. I was like, this is great, I'm

  in, I'm invested, I know everything, I'm fully up to

  speed. Nothing here is too complicated,

  But as you said, it is a great idea for promotions both old and

  new because you're always going to get new people coming into

  shows that have possibly never been to a wrestling show before.

  You turn up and get this sheet, you see who's on who's on the

  card. You immediately know who is
• 22:37
  going to be the bad guy, who's going to be the goody because
• 22:42
  it'll kind of give you a bit of a loose picture, so to speak and
• 22:48
  explain kind of like this is this person here's kind of like
• 22:54
  what the stakes are, but. As you say, it is a really good
• 23:00
  idea. Hopefully it it does take off
• 23:04
  because as you say, it's a great idea.

  I just think it's very good marketing as well.

  Like for me to be able to show other people that this company

  does this so you can just come along like when Soft Pro was

  running shows regularly. I'm sure you'll recall I did the

  Gast forward series, which was here's a match on the card.

  Here's the back story to it with clips, all the context you need
• 23:25
  in as close to a minute as I can get it so that it's fully
• 23:29
  digestible. And part of that came from when

  I lived in Bristol. I put off going to Pro Wrestling
• 23:35
  Chaos for the longest time because I knew they were a very
• 23:38
  story heavy company, like fantastic wrestlers, fantastic
• 23:41
  matches. But I always had this
• 23:43
  apprehension that I'd be going into it and feeling lost.
• 23:46
  I'd be like, I feel like I'm coming into something in the
• 23:48
  middle of it. And then I finally went to a
• 23:50
  Chaos show and it was great start to finish.

  Everything that I needed was right there.
• 23:55
  The context was there because all the wrestlers are fantastic
• 23:58
  storytellers. They told me everything I needed
• 24:00
  to know in the ring. And I was like, why was I
• 24:03
  apprehensive? And it just made me thought,
• 24:06
  like, there might be other people in that same position of
• 24:09
  me when they've almost got FOMO from the shows they haven't gone
• 24:13
  to. And they kind of just need to,
• 24:15
  they need to know, yeah, just go.

  You don't, Don't worry about it. Thing as well of I feel with a
• 24:22
  few promotional, a fair few promotions, I should say, where
• 24:26
  when they build matches up, it's kind of they just hope it's
• 24:32
  going to be name value that draws you in, where I'll just be
• 24:36
  kind of like this person, be this person.

  And it's just like, OK, is am I meant to know kind of like who
• 24:46
  they are or what's the whole story?
• 24:50
  And but one thing that Sulphy do is they will kind of build the
• 24:56
  story off screen as well. So one match we'll come to later

  for the in the tag team match, Jack Baron and Philip Michael,
• 25:10
  they've been doing a great job of Baron trying to get Philip
• 25:16
  Michael to kind of bring the Zumba weights back together.

  And they use social media so well to kind of tell a story
• 25:27
  beforehand. So when promotions can do that,
• 25:32
  it helps so much, I feel, to just make you want to buy a
• 25:37
  ticket to a show. Absolutely.

  So as I say, we will come to match #2 The King's Gauntlet.

  And for the first few minutes it was a bit like a Royal Rumble
• 25:53
  where people come in and people very quickly get eliminated.

  Because if we, I think if you've been watching the show, you, you
• 26:05
  knew in a sense where this was going to be heading.

  For sure. Just for context, it opened with
• 26:13
  Jensen Vesper literally rolling out a red carpet bringing out
• 26:17
  King Troy Ryan to oversee this battle Royale on this beautiful
• 26:22
  throne on the stage, Jensen plays such an incredible,
• 26:28
  sycophantic little bastard. I loved him.
• 26:33
  It's in fairness though, in for some people playing that role is
• 26:39
  so difficult, but for Jensen that is effectively just him.
• 26:45
  That's not even him trying to become that character.
• 26:49
  That is literally how he how he is.
• 26:55
  So the fact obviously I'm more familiar with Troy Ryan as part
• 26:58
  of Meat Waggon, so getting to see him like doing this
• 27:01
  character with the big flag, the crown or smug demeanour.

  Fantastic, It's so different and it's it's so nice, but it's just

  so simple at the court. It's great.

  So I mean the I've I've chatted to try a few times because I'm,

  I mean officially I am the only person that cheers for him.

  It's SOF pro, Salford, Salford. Sorry, because everyone hates

  all the shirts that get put out are always not my king and
• 27:36
  because I'm a big fan of like Meat Waggon and it's and it's
• 27:42
  Troy, I thought, you know what? This will be the only show where
• 27:47
  I will actually cheer a heel. You've got to have a contrarian
• 27:52
  in the crowd. It makes you so much sweeter.

  Token Monarchist. When he won the King of Salford
• 28:11
  match, he got the world's smallest Cape, which did not fit
• 28:16
  him to begin with. And obviously being king you get
• 28:22
  more money. So he got a brand new Cape,
• 28:25
  which I mean you look at Troy Ryan and you looked at the Cape,
• 28:34
  it looked like a kind of like a napkin the Cape compared to
• 28:38
  someone that beefy. So you need to kind of just make
• 28:44
  it bigger the Cape and thankfully they did.
• 28:48
  The crown broke on the second show and has and if you look
• 28:55
  very closely you will see the elastic on the crown just to
• 29:01
  keep it in place. God bless British wrestling.

  I love you so. We've joked so many times about

  that crown when you're showing it me.

  But but enough disparaging the the monarchy.

  There's a lot of stuff I love about SCWS because you can tell

  a lot of things have kind of been in response to all right,

  lesson learned. Like the fact they've always got
• 29:25
  someone on hand to pull the curtain to because everyone does
• 29:29
  the dramatic push in the intro. It's also the thing for me of
• 29:35
  the biggest villain or the biggest opponent that wrestlers
• 29:39
  have. No matter what promotion that
• 29:43
  you see. It could be kind of like the top
• 29:46
  levels of like a Progress or a Rev Pro or kind of like starting
• 29:52
  out on trainee shows. Wrestlers hate the curtain
• 30:00
  because they can never find where the curtain actually
• 30:03
  opens. The amount of times I've seen
• 30:07
  wrestlers literally like a cat trying to claw and find where
• 30:12
  the opening is and they can't it's I don't get it.

  It's only wrestlers that have this.

  Oh, it's not speaking as a theatre techie like it's, it's a
• 30:26
  universal problem to anyone that has that theatre like
• 30:30
  inclination that just wants to throw it out and be centre
• 30:32
  stage. I, I actually got bollocked for
• 30:35
  the curtain. The first show I worked.
• 30:37
  It was the first soft pro show I was actually involved in where
• 30:41
  I'd interviewed, I'd done an interview with Leon Slater.

  Just humble brag there. That's the first thing I did in
• 30:47
  wrestling that's getting cooler by the day.

  And then immediately and then immediately afterwards, like I
• 30:56
  get misty by Kenny Williams and I'm like crawling backstage.

  And I think it was Lana Austin. I think it was just like, you
• 31:04
  know, mind the curtain. And then I look up and there's

  just like black just trickling down my face.

  And she says, oh, you're blind, Never mind.

  Don't worry about it. Like but it's.
