- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us Now, Lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Meter podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain
- 0:29Speaker 2: Time on Thursday, d February twenty seventh, and we're live
- 0:34Speaker 2: from met Eater HQ and Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host,
- 0:37Speaker 2: Spencer Newhart, joined today by Ryan Callahan and Cory Hawkins.
- 0:41Speaker 2: On today's show, we'll interview Kim Titterington about sick bloated
- 0:45Speaker 2: alligators in Florida. Then we'll play the Price Is Right,
- 0:49Speaker 2: followed by one minute fishing with Christy Holmes and Maine.
- 0:52Speaker 2: After that, we've got a hot tip off about recycled
- 0:55Speaker 2: tent tarps and dip can wndicators, and finally we'll talk
- 0:59Speaker 2: to Dave Ben Scotterer about hunting for lost varieties of apples.
- 1:04Speaker 2: The first, cal Corey, I think we need to debrief
- 1:06Speaker 2: on our travel home from the NWTF convention. It was
- 1:10Speaker 2: sort of an adventure for all three of us.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Oh, flying in the winter is always an adventure. I
- 1:15Speaker 3: really disliked traveling through the air. I don't mind airplanes,
- 1:18Speaker 3: but airports trying to get your connection it's.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Just a headache. Cal let's start with you. We had
- 1:22Speaker 2: an uber leaving the hotel for US three and Yannie.
- 1:26Speaker 2: At what time was it? Five thirty am? Yeah? Cal
- 1:29Speaker 2: was nowhere to be seen, calling his phone, uh, trying
- 1:33Speaker 2: to find someone at the front desk to tell us
- 1:35Speaker 2: what room you were in. I even called the hotel.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Nobody answered at the hotel, so we could just like
- 1:39Speaker 2: compound on your door. Cal was nowhere to be seen.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Cal would happened?
- 1:44Speaker 1: First thing that we need to address is I think
- 1:46Speaker 1: either Phil actually has volume in my headset for the
- 1:49Speaker 1: first time in a long time, or your announcer voice
- 1:53Speaker 1: is just getting so much better every day. One the
- 1:56Speaker 1: second one, I missed the first flight of my entire life.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Really, oh, that was the.
- 2:02Speaker 1: First time I've ever missed a flight. And I'll tell
- 2:05Speaker 1: you in the past, in my wilder days, I had
- 2:09Speaker 1: plenty of excuses to miss flights.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Just a little sleepy this time, Well, I don't.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I woke up like an hour before, as you do,
- 2:19Speaker 1: like if you're you're anxious traveler, right, I woke up
- 2:23Speaker 1: an hour before the alarm was supposed.
- 2:24Speaker 4: To go off.
- 2:26Speaker 1: We had another big day in Salt Lake City, so
- 2:29Speaker 1: I was like, I'm going to try to sleep this
- 2:31Speaker 1: extra hour, and it had just like the whole anxiety
- 2:35Speaker 1: dream thing of like you're gonna miss your flight, You're flight,
- 2:38Speaker 1: And then I was like, I have an alarm set
- 2:41Speaker 1: the normal thing. And then I was like, bye, God,
- 2:44Speaker 1: my flight is boarding right now, as I got out
- 2:46Speaker 1: of bed to no alarm. Sure, right, But I made
- 2:50Speaker 1: it to the airport in time to see you guys
- 2:54Speaker 1: take off.
- 2:55Speaker 2: That's special.
- 2:57Speaker 3: We were delayed because there's light on the runway, so
- 3:01Speaker 3: we were probably thirty minutes late.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I felt extra bad Cal pulling away in that uber
- 3:05Speaker 2: because you saved me in Philadelphia coming home from the
- 3:09Speaker 2: Live Tour, because I was a sleepy head, had too
- 3:12Speaker 2: much champagne the night before for celebrating the end of
- 3:15Speaker 2: the Live tour. Yea, and I woke up to Cal
- 3:17Speaker 2: pounding on my hotel room door.
- 3:19Speaker 4: It wasn't gonna leave a man behind.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Get up, let's go, we gotta go, We gotta go.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And Cal saved me from missing a flight after a
- 3:26Speaker 2: very long week on the road or ten days on.
- 3:29Speaker 4: The road, literally on the road in the tour bus.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And I couldn't return the favor for you. I devastated,
- 3:34Speaker 2: believe me.
- 3:35Speaker 1: That popped into my head, and when I saw the
- 3:39Speaker 1: text from Spencer, I was like, I'm not even gonna
- 3:41Speaker 1: bring it up.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I was thinking about it the whole time. Cal I
- 3:44Speaker 2: was trying to do everything I could to wake you up.
- 3:47Speaker 5: I've heard her recounting of this story, and in the story,
- 3:51Speaker 5: Spencer is just silent, like like you just kind of
- 3:54Speaker 5: walked down, walked into the elevator, walked out of the lobby,
- 3:57Speaker 5: just didn't say anything to anybody.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Boy, I felt bad. I was holding up an uber
- 4:01Speaker 2: outside the hotel, and then because of this lightning delay, Cory,
- 4:04Speaker 2: you were running through an airport.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I had a fifty minute layover and
- 4:07Speaker 3: then we were thirty to forty minutes delayed. So Yanni
- 4:10Speaker 3: and I were on the same flight. Cali were supposed
- 4:12Speaker 3: to be on that one, the.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Red flash, it's what people called you to moving through
- 4:16Speaker 2: the airport, so quickly get into that next flight.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I was walking making it had to pee, so certainly
- 4:22Speaker 3: had to make.
- 4:22Speaker 6: That pit stop.
- 4:23Speaker 3: And then I looked down at my watch and realized
- 4:25Speaker 3: I need to run the last probably quarter mile all
- 4:28Speaker 3: the way to the very end of the terminal.
- 4:31Speaker 6: Yeah, And the lady's like.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Are you Cory like, yep, she's like you better hurry up.
- 4:35Speaker 2: WHOA you don't want to hear your name at an airport?
- 4:39Speaker 6: No, definitely not.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I like to be Yeah, yeah, it's it's the whole thing,
- 4:44Speaker 1: like air travel is just not there's you know, there's
- 4:47Speaker 1: plenty of anxiety, and then you're signing up to sit
- 4:51Speaker 1: in like a recycled the germ and fart filled tube
- 4:55Speaker 1: for hours. Yeah, trying your best not to make too
- 5:00Speaker 1: much physical contact with strangers next to you.
- 5:03Speaker 2: My adventure didn't start until we were about to land.
- 5:05Speaker 2: We were coming into Bozeman. We're dropping into the runway
- 5:10Speaker 2: and the wheels hit the runway for about one or
- 5:13Speaker 2: two seconds, and then the pilot hits the throttle and
- 5:17Speaker 2: pulls the nose up and we go back into the
- 5:20Speaker 2: air and everyone in the airplane was very confused. Folks
- 5:24Speaker 2: are looking around each other and nobody like panicked, but
- 5:27Speaker 2: you could tell there were folks that were like on
- 5:29Speaker 2: the verge of panicking. If it would have started somewhere
- 5:31Speaker 2: else in the in the airplane, it would have been
- 5:34Speaker 2: a chain reaction. So nobody knew what was happening. And
- 5:36Speaker 2: about a minute later, the pilot comes on the speaker,
- 5:40Speaker 2: and he says that, sorry, folks, we had a wind
- 5:43Speaker 2: shear at the last second there that was gonna was
- 5:47Speaker 2: gonna prevent us from landing, so we had to pull
- 5:50Speaker 2: her back up. We're gonna circle around and try this again.
- 5:52Speaker 2: And so then ten minutes later, they don't just go
- 5:54Speaker 2: up in the air a little bit, they like get
- 5:56Speaker 2: way up again in altitude, and he circles back and
- 6:00Speaker 2: we come in and we have a safe, normal landing.
- 6:03Speaker 2: But he said, we had a wind she here, which
- 6:04Speaker 2: is like a gust of wind that totally affected the
- 6:07Speaker 2: plane and made it unsafe. But there was no wind
- 6:09Speaker 2: that day. I looked on my phone it was one
- 6:12Speaker 2: mile per hour wind. And so then I was on
- 6:15Speaker 2: my phone also reading about like what what does this mean.
- 6:18Speaker 2: It's called an aborted landing, And I had read a
- 6:20Speaker 2: pilot's account saying that they have no obligation to actually
- 6:24Speaker 2: tell you what happened. But that's like a common excuse.
- 6:27Speaker 2: It's either the runway wasn't clear or there was a
- 6:29Speaker 2: wind she here, But sometimes it's just they're coming in
- 6:32Speaker 2: too hot and they made a mistake and they got
- 6:35Speaker 2: to lift off again to try it a second time.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I didn't even know that was an option in airplane travel,
- 6:41Speaker 2: and especially with all the recent news. Yeah, that was
- 6:44Speaker 2: genuinely scary.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Minute, We had just like a shaky flight coming back
- 6:50Speaker 1: because we flew the day after you know, that collision
- 6:56Speaker 1: and the plane went down the Hudson, which was you know, horrific.
- 7:01Speaker 2: And was it the Hudson or the Potomac?
- 7:04Speaker 4: Was Potomac?
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, sorry Potomac. That was a different plane in
- 7:09Speaker 1: the Hudson. But anyway, yeah, folks, you know, it was
- 7:13Speaker 1: just like a what to me is like a very
- 7:15Speaker 1: normal winter flying amount of turbulence, and I had multiple
- 7:20Speaker 1: people comment on my boy.
- 7:22Speaker 4: People were very nervous, sure, very nervous.
- 7:24Speaker 2: But we made it here today to host media to
- 7:27Speaker 2: Radio Live. All right, let's get on the show. Joining
- 7:30Speaker 2: us on the line first is Kim Titterington, the founder
- 7:33Speaker 2: of Swamp Girl Adventures Reptile Rehab. Kim, welcome to the show.
- 7:38Speaker 7: Hey, thanks for having me, Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Thank you. First thing, tell us about the types of
- 7:44Speaker 2: animals and injuries you work with at your rehab facility.
- 7:48Speaker 7: So I specifically work with reptiles and amphibians, So that's turtles, tortoises, steaks, alligators, lizards, frogs, toads,
- 7:55Speaker 7: you know all those fun things.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And what's the we have facility right now.
- 8:03Speaker 7: We have a couple of gators, We have a couple
- 8:05Speaker 7: of snakes, and I have quite a few turtles and tortoises,
- 8:08Speaker 7: because that's really what we get the most of.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And what is like the most normal injury that you
- 8:15Speaker 2: deal with.
- 8:17Speaker 7: Typically it's from either hit by car, so car strikes
- 8:21Speaker 7: are the most often. But then our second one to
- 8:24Speaker 7: that is actually dog attacks on turtles and tortoises, believe
- 8:27Speaker 7: it or not, So that's our second one. So we
- 8:31Speaker 7: get a lot of both of those.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Okay, and do you have any of your clients around
- 8:35Speaker 2: that you could show us for the interview today.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 7: I actually I have a gopher tortoise here on my grandma.
- 8:42Speaker 7: This is gopher tortoise and you're gonna see he's got
- 8:45Speaker 7: some stuff going on here. This is called the hooks
- 8:48Speaker 7: and wire method. So it's not permanent. It's basically it's
- 8:52Speaker 7: kind of the same stuff as a use for Nalocrylic
- 8:55Speaker 7: helps keep the little clasps on and that reduces and
- 8:58Speaker 7: supports the fracture so that it has time to heal.
- 9:01Speaker 7: So this poor guy. He was hit by a car,
- 9:03Speaker 7: but he's he's doing a good job healing right now
- 9:05Speaker 7: with those fractures.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Okay, And is the end goal then to have him
- 9:09Speaker 2: released back into the wild correct?
- 9:12Speaker 7: Yeap, as soon as he's done, you know, with all
- 9:14Speaker 7: of his rehabilitation, he'll go back to the area he
- 9:17Speaker 7: was found. Obviously not in the middle of the street
- 9:19Speaker 7: where he was found, but as close by safely to
- 9:22Speaker 7: the area he was found.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Well, he's looking healthy right now. I think you're doing
- 9:25Speaker 2: a good job, Kim. What's the rarest animal that you've
- 9:28Speaker 2: had at your facility.
- 9:31Speaker 7: The rarest would actually be the Eastern Indigo snake and
- 9:35Speaker 7: they are federally protected by law. They're very rare throughout
- 9:39Speaker 7: their whole eastern range. But I've actually received two into care,
- 9:44Speaker 7: which is pretty rare.
- 9:46Speaker 2: And what was going on with those snakes that they
- 9:48Speaker 2: had to come to you?
- 9:50Speaker 7: So one the first one was actually had been hit
- 9:52Speaker 7: with some wawn equipment and survived. It was, you know,
- 9:56Speaker 7: some nasty scars were going on there, but that one survived.
- 9:59Speaker 7: And then the second one was actually a zip tie
- 10:01Speaker 7: that the snake had crawled through, and then obviously it
- 10:05Speaker 7: couldn't come off, so it was literally cutting into the
- 10:07Speaker 7: flesh and had been there for quite some time. But
- 10:10Speaker 7: that one was also successfully rehabbed and released.
- 10:13Speaker 2: And what's your favorite rehab success story from Swamp Girl Adventures.
- 10:19Speaker 7: You know, there's a ton of them, but one that
- 10:21Speaker 7: stands out that I feel like is the most unusual
- 10:23Speaker 7: and uh, it just it's actually pretty rewarding. Was one
- 10:27Speaker 7: where we had a golf A snake had swallowed a
- 10:29Speaker 7: golf ball, and so the golf ball. Yeah, the golf
- 10:33Speaker 7: ball had to be surgically removed because it had been
- 10:35Speaker 7: in there so long it was adhering to the stomach lining,
- 10:38Speaker 7: so it had to be a surgery. We couldn't like
- 10:39Speaker 7: just you know, push it out. But the surgery was
- 10:42Speaker 7: a success and the snake was released. So that was
- 10:44Speaker 7: probably one of the most unusual but rewarding.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Is it safe to assume that snake thought he was
- 10:50Speaker 2: eating an egg?
- 10:52Speaker 7: Correct? Yeah. A lot of people will actually use golf
- 10:55Speaker 7: balls or false eggs in there in with their chickens,
- 10:59Speaker 7: and that helps kind to keep them, I guess, from
- 11:01Speaker 7: going off into other places and keeping the eggs in
- 11:03Speaker 7: one spot. But then I've also heard that people will
- 11:06Speaker 7: put golf balls in there or fake eggs because then
- 11:08Speaker 7: when snakes come, they end up, you know, not being
- 11:11Speaker 7: able to digest it and will die later, which is
- 11:13Speaker 7: kind of cool because that's a long, nasty death. But yeah,
- 11:18Speaker 7: that's Do.
- 11:19Speaker 4: You feel appreciated by your clientele, you know.
- 11:24Speaker 7: Even though they're reptiles? You know, I think that a
- 11:27Speaker 7: lot of times I get some that they realize that, Okay,
- 11:30Speaker 7: this person's just kind of helping me out. I'm just
- 11:31Speaker 7: going to chill. But then you know, I have those
- 11:34Speaker 7: that that they don't. They're just like, just to stop
- 11:36Speaker 7: touching me. I don't care, just go away.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Now. The big reason I wanted to talk to you, Kim,
- 11:42Speaker 2: is about this bloated gator phenomenon that you've been documenting
- 11:46Speaker 2: in Florida. Can you tell us about that?
- 11:49Speaker 7: Yeah, so back some of the first reports that went
- 11:52Speaker 7: into FWC. We're actually back in twenty twenty three, and
- 11:57Speaker 7: after that it just kind of seemed like people I
- 12:00Speaker 7: had seen them, but nobody really said anything, or the
- 12:01Speaker 7: reports weren't going through whatever the reason, it kind of
- 12:04Speaker 7: just fell off the radar. So just this year, all
- 12:09Speaker 7: of a sudden, you know, I was getting as a
- 12:11Speaker 7: rep caw rehabit. People are like, hey, well can you help,
- 12:13Speaker 7: And I'm like, all right, well sure, you know, let
- 12:15Speaker 7: me go take a look. And we captured the first
- 12:18Speaker 7: one and which you can kind of see on the
- 12:21Speaker 7: screen now, and she definitely was severely bloated, extremely emaciated.
- 12:27Speaker 7: And then not even three days later, I got a
- 12:30Speaker 7: call about another one in a completely different part of
- 12:32Speaker 7: the state, in all the same bloated, very emaciated. So
- 12:38Speaker 7: this is something that seems to be on the uprise,
- 12:41Speaker 7: or at least we're hearing more about it now that
- 12:43Speaker 7: people know to look, but definitely a concern.
- 12:46Speaker 2: And Phil is showing us some photos of these bloated
- 12:49Speaker 2: gators and when I say bloated, I mean like they
- 12:52Speaker 2: look like a balloon. They look wildly uncomfortable.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah, this current photo is like too, like over sized
- 13:00Speaker 1: beach balls coming out of each side of the gator,
- 13:03Speaker 1: like like it swallowed a cartoon.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Dumbbell, Kim, do you have a hypothesis for what's causing
- 13:09Speaker 2: these gators to get so bloated and ultimately die?
- 13:14Speaker 7: Yeah, So it's one thing we were able to roll
- 13:17Speaker 7: out is that there was not a physical blockage like
- 13:20Speaker 7: a lot of people like, oh, it ate a ball
- 13:22Speaker 7: or you know, maybe it's a plastic bag or something
- 13:24Speaker 7: like that. We were able to roll that out on
- 13:26Speaker 7: both these cases. Sadly, both of them did pass away.
- 13:29Speaker 7: What you're seeing here on X ray is what we
- 13:31Speaker 7: first saw, and it looks like a lot of stones,
- 13:33Speaker 7: but what they're called is fecoliths, and it's basically when
- 13:37Speaker 7: the feces turned to stone. So the feces had been
- 13:41Speaker 7: in the stomach, not moving or passing for so long,
- 13:45Speaker 7: possibly even up to a year with this one particular case,
- 13:48Speaker 7: and then gas just starts to build up in the
- 13:51Speaker 7: colon and so on the cropsy we found that basically
- 13:56Speaker 7: their colons were just, you know, all distended with these And.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Have you heard of this happening in other states or
- 14:03Speaker 2: other countries. Not really.
- 14:08Speaker 7: Usually when something happens like that, they contribute it to
- 14:11Speaker 7: a piece of litter or something that's incidental. But at
- 14:14Speaker 7: this point, we're seeing these cases throughout the state and
- 14:18Speaker 7: we just cannot seem to find a common denominator. Yet
- 14:21Speaker 7: some of the symptoms like we're seeing here, we're common,
- 14:24Speaker 7: like the pecalists and those build up and then the gas,
- 14:27Speaker 7: so the progression of the disease, But it's actual cause.
- 14:31Speaker 7: We have a ton of labs out right now, we're
- 14:33Speaker 7: just waiting on results, and we're going to be doing
- 14:35Speaker 7: a lot more testing here this coming year on various
- 14:38Speaker 7: gaters as well throughout the.
- 14:39Speaker 2: State, and Phil is showing us an X ray there
- 14:42Speaker 2: of one of those bloated gators. While most of the
- 14:45Speaker 2: folks listening to this show were hunters and anglers who
- 14:48Speaker 2: spend a lot of time outside, So how can we
- 14:50Speaker 2: be better stewards of the land and help out the
- 14:52Speaker 2: reptiles and amphibians that you work with.
- 14:57Speaker 5: I think the.
- 14:57Speaker 7: Biggest thing is, you know, picking up after yourself. I
- 15:00Speaker 7: actually one of the things is one of the x
- 15:02Speaker 7: rays that I had also sent you that gator had
- 15:06Speaker 7: a lead toxicosis as well, and that was because the
- 15:09Speaker 7: gator swallowed a lead weight from fishing. Now was that
- 15:12Speaker 7: the actual cause? Probably not, because it seems like we're
- 15:15Speaker 7: finding glueted gators that don't have lead toxicosis. It's just
- 15:18Speaker 7: that was an added thing. So that's something that we
- 15:20Speaker 7: see a lot in both like aquatic turtles and alligators,
- 15:24Speaker 7: to any animal that might ingest something like that accidentally
- 15:27Speaker 7: through phishing. Mores or things that were disposed improperly and
- 15:31Speaker 7: they pick it up out of the environment. So I
- 15:33Speaker 7: think those are the biggest things. And then the next
- 15:36Speaker 7: thing is awareness. You know, just be aware if someone's
- 15:39Speaker 7: looking for reports, like say we are on sick gators
- 15:42Speaker 7: or sick turtles. If you see something that just doesn't
- 15:45Speaker 7: seem right and you see it happen often go ahead
- 15:47Speaker 7: and report it. You could be the first one who's
- 15:50Speaker 7: noticing that there's a problem and people need to research it.
- 15:53Speaker 7: So if you are out there, that's one of the
- 15:55Speaker 7: best things you can do is just be aware and
- 15:58Speaker 7: help make those reports and observation.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Now. Kim's rehab facility is a nonprofit that relies on donations.
- 16:05Speaker 2: You can support her projects by going to Swampgirladventures dot org. Kim,
- 16:10Speaker 2: thanks for joining us and thanks for doing the work
- 16:12Speaker 2: that you do.
- 16:14Speaker 7: Not a problem. Thanks for having me.
- 16:16Speaker 2: There's a good reminder for everyone. Pick up after yourself
- 16:19Speaker 2: when you're out in the woods.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Absolutely, man, I'm not going to complain next time I
- 16:22Speaker 3: have one too many hazy IPAs and feel a little bloated.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Those gators look so wildly uncomfortable, man, And then re
- 16:30Speaker 2: seat the X ray of the blockage. That's next level
- 16:34Speaker 2: stuff it is.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Yeah, that was shocking.
- 16:37Speaker 2: All right. Our next segment is the Prices right here.
- 16:42Speaker 5: It comes from Bozeman, Montana Media Radio's most exciting fifteen minutes.
- 16:48Speaker 4: It's the Prices.
- 16:49Speaker 8: Right, yeah, right, Ryan Callahan come on down. Yeah, Cory
- 16:59Speaker 8: Calkins come on now, his second appearance.
- 17:02Speaker 5: All right, course, two contestants on Meat Eaters meet and
- 17:06Speaker 5: the radios the price is right. Now, here's your host,
- 17:10Speaker 5: Spencer New Phil.
- 17:14Speaker 2: That was Cal's first time seeing that performance. I think
- 17:17Speaker 2: he's impressed.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I yeah, I feel I actually feel special.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Oh god, that's amazing. That's the idea.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Now, this game is really simple. Phil is going to
- 17:26Speaker 2: tell you about a product from the Meat Eater universe,
- 17:29Speaker 2: and you need to guess its price. The player with
- 17:31Speaker 2: the closest answer without going over will be declared the winner.
- 17:35Speaker 2: If both players go over, then you'll both be told
- 17:38Speaker 2: to try again, and the chat should play along as well,
- 17:40Speaker 2: because whoever has the closest answer will get a shout
- 17:44Speaker 2: out from Phil. All right, there are five products for
- 17:47Speaker 2: today's show. Phil tell us about the first item up forbid.
- 17:50Speaker 5: Oh, well, how would you like to scare every man? Woman?
- 17:56Speaker 4: Child?
- 17:57Speaker 5: And beast who enters your home. Well, we've got just
- 17:59Speaker 5: the thing you. This brown bear is a half body
- 18:02Speaker 5: mount that hangs on your wall. It's posed with its
- 18:04Speaker 5: arms extended out as though it's getting sucked into a
- 18:06Speaker 5: portal or is about to sack a quarterback. And the
- 18:08Speaker 5: owner says he'll cut you a deal if you also
- 18:10Speaker 5: buy his have alena shoulder mount or shark jaw.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yeah, this beautiful piece of taxidermy is located in West
- 18:16Speaker 2: Houston and was listed on Craigslist ten days ago. Now
- 18:20Speaker 2: you need to guess its price. Phil is now showing
- 18:24Speaker 2: us some photos of this half mount taxidermied brown bear.
- 18:30Speaker 9: Again.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I found this on Craigslist in Houston, Texas. Houston, Texas.
- 18:36Speaker 2: That's right, not half that this.
- 18:38Speaker 1: This is one of those things like, uh, do you
- 18:40Speaker 1: have one of those roadside attraction type shops, then it's
- 18:45Speaker 1: worth some money.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Sure, do you live in an apartment in New York City?
- 18:49Speaker 2: Well you can sort of get a glimpse into this
- 18:51Speaker 2: person's home. You see a fellow there with some suspenders.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Suspenders.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Brant Reeves sitting in the back onto this photo. And
- 19:02Speaker 2: we've got a few pictures here of this half body
- 19:06Speaker 2: mount of a brown Bear in Houston, Texas.
- 19:10Speaker 6: Is he trying to get rid of it?
- 19:11Speaker 3: Or is he trying to make some money?
- 19:12Speaker 2: It was listed ten days ago, hot, so factor that
- 19:15Speaker 2: into your calculation again. You can't go over. If you
- 19:19Speaker 2: both go over, you'll be told to try again.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Cal really likes his answer.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Really you ready, Corey? Ready, Cal go ahead and reveal
- 19:29Speaker 2: your answers. We have Cal saying seventy five dollars and
- 19:34Speaker 2: one cent. We have Corey saying, what's that? Say? Corey,
- 19:38Speaker 2: fourteen fifty dollars, fourteen hundred with an or commas so
- 19:42Speaker 2: big that it looks like a seven. Corey saying fourteen
- 19:45Speaker 2: hundred and fifty dollars. That's a big swing between YouTube. Now, Cal,
- 19:50Speaker 2: was that a safe answer or do you think it's
- 19:52Speaker 2: actually like an eighty dollars item? Were you just trying
- 19:56Speaker 2: to go under?
- 19:57Speaker 9: No?
- 19:57Speaker 1: I mean we all know that the taxidermy like is
- 20:00Speaker 1: the most valuable to the person that got the critter
- 20:03Speaker 1: or somebody related, right, and so then it like devalues
- 20:07Speaker 1: greatly beyond that unless you're like a curio person, right,
- 20:12Speaker 1: or like I want to have a weird hip vrbo.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that would fit into one of those nice
- 20:19Speaker 2: We have Cal saying seventy five dollars, Cory saying fourteen
- 20:22Speaker 2: hundred dollars. The correct answer is nine hundred and fifty dollars,
- 20:26Speaker 2: giving Cal the first point of the day, Phil, how
- 20:30Speaker 2: does the chat do fast?
- 20:31Speaker 4: Math?
- 20:31Speaker 10: Oh?
- 20:32Speaker 5: We have three people. Get it right on the money,
- 20:34Speaker 5: Cody Canadian Hunter and Ian McKenzie said nine to fifty.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Well done, Cody, Canadian Hunter and Ian McKenzie. We trust
- 20:43Speaker 2: that you're not googling?
- 20:44Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I don't know if I don't know if
- 20:46Speaker 4: we should trust that you're not.
- 20:49Speaker 1: We remove where you found the item from your next
- 20:52Speaker 1: next one.
- 20:53Speaker 2: That's pretty quick googling though that You know what, if
- 20:55Speaker 2: they got it that fast to put in the chat
- 20:57Speaker 2: for Phil to find that they earned.
- 20:59Speaker 4: It, well, don't listen to that.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Kids.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Cheating's wrong, all.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Right, Phil tell us about the second item up forbid.
- 21:06Speaker 5: Sure thing, Well, you're in your living room with the
- 21:08Speaker 5: taxi turmied brown Bear. Won't be complete until you bring
- 21:10Speaker 5: home this camouflage sofa from Kabbella's Snuggle up for a
- 21:13Speaker 5: meat eater marathon with the whole family on this best
- 21:16Speaker 5: Home Furnishing Outdoorsman sofa The entire thing is wrapped in
- 21:19Speaker 5: massioak break up camo, making it impossible to spot whatever
- 21:22Speaker 5: stains you might create. This seven foot sofa doubles as
- 21:25Speaker 5: a recliner, allowing you to kick your feet up and
- 21:27Speaker 5: relax after a long day of being a redneck.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Hell yeah, Phil, And that Camo sofa has a perfect
- 21:35Speaker 2: five star rating from six reviews on kabellas dot com.
- 21:40Speaker 4: What are those people sitting on? They're just floating?
- 21:43Speaker 2: That's right, you sure think so? All right, Caln Corey,
- 21:46Speaker 2: what do you think that elegant piece of furniture costs?
- 21:49Speaker 2: Don't flip over your answers quite yet, or do you
- 21:52Speaker 2: just ask us? Well, I'm like prompting you to write
- 21:54Speaker 2: it down, but we got some time to you know,
- 21:57Speaker 2: banter and allow you guys to think long and hard
- 22:00Speaker 2: about what your answer is this give.
- 22:02Speaker 6: The chat a little hand.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Fully, Fully, camel, when I say fully camo, there's not
- 22:07Speaker 2: a square inch of this sofa that is not covered
- 22:10Speaker 2: in the massioke breakup infinity.
- 22:14Speaker 4: If you wear the same pattern, all that's gonna show
- 22:16Speaker 4: is your face.
- 22:17Speaker 2: So you could you could take this thing turkey hunting
- 22:19Speaker 2: and then you just wear the Massio Baker.
- 22:22Speaker 5: We've got people who are definitely googling chat. I don't
- 22:26Speaker 5: know who to trust anymore. Are you boys ready?
- 22:29Speaker 7: Sure?
- 22:29Speaker 2: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We've got cal saying
- 22:33Speaker 2: four hundred dollars, four hundred five dollars, and we've got
- 22:37Speaker 2: Corey saying eight hundred and fifty dollars. The correct answer
- 22:43Speaker 2: is one thousand, four hundred forty nine dollars, giving Corey
- 22:48Speaker 2: our second point. All right, Phil, tell us about the
- 22:51Speaker 2: cheaters in the chat.
- 22:51Speaker 5: Well, we have we have one person. Get to get
- 22:53Speaker 5: it right on the fourteen forty nine up here. I
- 22:56Speaker 5: don't even want to call people out now. I don't
- 22:57Speaker 5: trust anybody shut the whole thing down.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Did they put ninety nine cents after they did?
- 23:03Speaker 5: But he's gonna guess fourteen forty nine unless they looked
- 23:05Speaker 5: it up. We had some people guess fourteen fifty and
- 23:08Speaker 5: a couple of people in the thirteen hundreds.
- 23:09Speaker 4: I'm willing to give them the.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Benefit of the doubt here, but no, I'm sorry.
- 23:15Speaker 1: All right, I'll tell you right now, retail pricing is
- 23:19Speaker 1: just not something I'm familiar with.
- 23:21Speaker 5: Ryan Kimberl said fourteen ninety nine, ninety nine, he's got
- 23:23Speaker 5: three of.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Our god awesome Ryan. I love that, and I'm sorry
- 23:29Speaker 2: for writing that mean line about kicking your feet up
- 23:32Speaker 2: after a long day of being a redneck. I bet
- 23:34Speaker 2: you're a good guy.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I need to go back to used pricing. That's I'm
- 23:37Speaker 1: familiar with.
- 23:38Speaker 2: I bet I could find one of these sofas on
- 23:40Speaker 2: Craigslist somewhere in the nation. All right, Phil, tell us
- 23:44Speaker 2: about the third item up forbid.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Oh yeah, give me one second. I get everything lined

- 25:38Speaker 2: Do your kids find that like like they're looking at
- 25:41Speaker 2: a caveman when you grab one of those.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Well, actually no, because we've got a DVD player in
- 25:46Speaker 5: our minivan, so they associate DVD so this is what
- 25:49Speaker 5: we can watch in the car. So they still would
- 25:52Speaker 5: see see a DVD in the store and say, well,
- 25:54Speaker 5: I want to watch this in the car.
- 25:55Speaker 2: So let's let's pick the same thing.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Which have a minivan you're rocking all wheel drive.
- 26:00Speaker 5: That's a Plymouth, uh Montana Pontiac Montana.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Baby, show up on a future route meeting your prices, right, Corey, Cal,

- 26:37Speaker 2: giving cal our third point to the.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Game, a big buck knowledge for nothing.
- 26:43Speaker 2: One lead you find those on YouTube. That's a dollar
- 26:47Speaker 2: forty nine per DVD.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon's gonna get a nasty phone call from the
- 26:52Speaker 1: Dreary Boys, being like Corey Colkins does not think much
- 26:56Speaker 1: of us.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Hey, we just I bet we sold their whole inventory.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I'm being serious. Now, if I had a deer camp
- 27:01Speaker 2: in like the Great Lakes region that didn't have like
- 27:04Speaker 2: cell service and an old box TV sitting there with
- 27:07Speaker 2: a DVD player, Uh, you best bet if you left, Yann?
- 27:13Speaker 4: What is happening, Yanny?
- 27:15Speaker 2: Grab yourself a whiteboard, put on a headset.
- 27:18Speaker 4: What the hell, Spencer, I'm here and invite.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I thought you were recording a TV show.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Oh is that a fresh new lid?
- 27:25Speaker 13: It is actually had Corey give it to make someone
- 27:27Speaker 13: to give it to a buddy of mine.
- 27:29Speaker 4: Oh that thing's charp.
- 27:31Speaker 2: We're playing the price is right. We just had Cory.
- 27:35Speaker 2: You got about ten minutes, all right, Grab yourself a
- 27:38Speaker 2: whiteboard and a Marker Cal has two points. Corey has
- 27:41Speaker 2: one point. They just guessed the price of all forty
- 27:44Speaker 2: one Jewelry Outdoors DVDs that are for sale on their website.
- 27:47Speaker 2: What do you think that would cost? Total total for all.
- 27:51Speaker 6: Of them?
- 27:52Speaker 2: Killing big old giant white Tail Bucks.
- 27:54Speaker 1: If you want to know something funny about Giannis, if
- 27:57Speaker 1: the text on his screen, if the font gets any larger,
- 28:01Speaker 1: he's gonna have to scroll for every sentence eight.
- 28:05Speaker 2: One hundred and fifty, eight hundred and fifty dollars sixty
- 28:09Speaker 2: one dollars and nine cents. What Yeah, you can buy
- 28:12Speaker 2: all the package for one. You should have these at
- 28:15Speaker 2: your hunting camp in Wisconsin.
- 28:16Speaker 5: You just got a new customer, Drewio nowis no, Well,
- 28:19Speaker 5: we don't have.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Televisions there, okay.
- 28:21Speaker 5: By the way, Sean Pettitt or petit, Yes, sixty, I think.
- 28:24Speaker 4: That was sewn sixty.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Well done, Sean. I bet you didn't google that one professional. Yes,
- 28:31Speaker 2: all right, Bell, tell us about the fourth item up forbid.
- 28:38Speaker 5: Sorry to take me away. Hey, if you're feeling inspired
- 28:41Speaker 5: from those forty one Drewy Outdoors DVDs, how about taking
- 28:44Speaker 5: a trip to the Michigan White Tail Hall of Fame
- 28:47Speaker 5: conveniently located just off By ninety four in the charming
- 28:50Speaker 5: town of Grass Lake, Michigan.
- 28:52Speaker 4: The museum is full.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Of family fun.
- 28:54Speaker 5: The Michigan Whitetail Hall of Fame features taxidermy of some
- 28:57Speaker 5: of the state's biggest bucks, live deer that you can
- 28:59Speaker 5: feed out in an on spiring collection of antique two
- 29:02Speaker 5: man chainsaws. The ven you would also love to host
- 29:05Speaker 5: your next special occasions, such as a wedding or family reunion.
- 29:07Speaker 2: That's right, Phil, and the owners of the museum also
- 29:10Speaker 2: have a tennis and pickleball court in the building where
- 29:13Speaker 2: they teach private lessons. But for now, you just need
- 29:16Speaker 2: to guess the price of adult admission to the Michigan
- 29:20Speaker 2: Whitetail Hall of Fame. Yanni, did you know this place existed?
- 29:24Speaker 4: No, but I definitely want to go there.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Okay, And as a Michigander, give us a review of
- 29:28Speaker 2: Grass Lake, Michigan. What do you know about that place?
- 29:31Speaker 13: I don't know anything about grass Have you never been there?
- 29:33Speaker 13: Never heard of it?
- 29:35Speaker 2: On the men, I don't know. Someone in the chattel
- 29:37Speaker 2: tell us what they think of Grass Lake, and then yeah, Detroit.
- 29:42Speaker 2: So again we need the price of admission for one
- 29:45Speaker 2: adult to the Michigan Whitetail Hall of Fame, and Phil
- 29:49Speaker 2: is showing us some photos of that Hall of Fame
- 29:53Speaker 2: with those big old giant whitetail bucks, the live deer
- 29:55Speaker 2: that you can feed, and their collection of antiques two
- 30:00Speaker 2: man chainsaws.
- 30:04Speaker 4: More or less than ten dollars. I don't think it's over.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Giving you any hints. But if you do go over,
- 30:10Speaker 2: it doesn't matter how close you are to the right answer.
- 30:12Speaker 2: You're just disqualified. Oh really, three of you will go over.
- 30:15Speaker 2: You gotta be under, you gotta be under. These are
- 30:18Speaker 2: the prices, right, it'll be under.
- 30:22Speaker 6: I wonder if that's.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Extra, that's not part of the admission. That's just like, Hey,
- 30:25Speaker 2: I got a whole day to kill in grass like Michigan.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I'm gonna go feed these big old white tail bucks
- 30:30Speaker 2: and get a private pickleball lesson in the back.
- 30:33Speaker 4: For folks who are scared of privately owned museums, like,
- 30:39Speaker 4: there is just no better way to spend your money.
- 30:41Speaker 4: It is so much fun.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Is that a thing people are scared of privately owned museum?
- 30:45Speaker 1: I think so too, because they look I mean, they
- 30:47Speaker 1: look exactly like the place that you get killed in
- 30:51Speaker 1: a variety of cheap horror films.
- 30:54Speaker 13: Buddy, I got a great story about one that you
- 30:57Speaker 13: should all everybody should visit. This one out in eastern Collego,
- 31:00Speaker 13: and I think it's genoah Colorado, and it's wild and
- 31:05Speaker 13: wacky man.
- 31:06Speaker 2: And it's often just like a husband and wife who
- 31:08Speaker 2: curated everything in there. And that's how you wind up
- 31:11Speaker 2: with a white tail hall of fame that has a
- 31:13Speaker 2: collection of antique chainsaws in it? Are you boys ready?
- 31:16Speaker 4: I'm ready.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We've got Cal saying
- 31:21Speaker 2: twelve ninety nine, Giannis says twelve dollars. Corey says twenty
- 31:26Speaker 2: one dollars.
- 31:27Speaker 4: I'm feeling good. You're high, Budden good.
- 31:29Speaker 2: All three of you are too high. All three of
- 31:32Speaker 2: you are going to try again. So write down a
- 31:35Speaker 2: new answer and we'll give someone a point after this.
- 31:38Speaker 4: It's take a drama.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Get under the correct answer. The price of admission for
- 31:43Speaker 2: one adult to the Michigan like Tail Hall of Fame. Yeah,
- 31:46Speaker 2: he's going back to his drawing board. We know it's
- 31:50Speaker 2: lower than twelve dollars.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Fantastic one. I've been there several times, but I finally
- 31:59Speaker 1: took my folks to the Ice Caves Museum out of Shoshown, Idaho,
- 32:04Speaker 1: U and it's it's phenomenal. I encourage everybody to go.
- 32:08Speaker 1: But when we went there, you know, it's like taking
- 32:12Speaker 1: the folks someplace special. The two kids family members wouldn't
- 32:17Speaker 1: get off that a little tiny TV that they were watching,
- 32:20Speaker 1: and they wouldn't.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Get off the couch to even take the money.
- 32:24Speaker 1: They were just like, uh huh, and they're just kind
- 32:26Speaker 1: of pointing at Just put the money in the bucket
- 32:29Speaker 1: and there you go.
- 32:30Speaker 13: Yeah, it was amazing this place. We would go today.
- 32:32Speaker 13: I've been there twice, taking a couple of different friends
- 32:35Speaker 13: there on our travels between Michigan.
- 32:37Speaker 4: And uh Colorado. But it was only a dollar to
- 32:40Speaker 4: get in.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Cool.
- 32:41Speaker 4: But there was a year.
- 32:42Speaker 13: There was The first time I went there was probably
- 32:46Speaker 13: I don't know, late nineties or early two thousands, but
- 32:50Speaker 13: there was a case of oddities, and at the end
- 32:52Speaker 13: of the tour he would grab one thing out of
- 32:55Speaker 13: the case of oddities and if you could guess what
- 32:58Speaker 13: it was, you got.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Your dollar back.
- 33:01Speaker 2: That's great. I went to the Creationist Museum in Eastern Montana. Yeah, exactly.
- 33:07Speaker 2: They have little diagrams in there of humans hand feeding dinosaurs.
- 33:12Speaker 2: So that's a special place to visit short dinosaurs. Do
- 33:14Speaker 2: all three. If you have an answer, go ahead and
- 33:17Speaker 2: reveal your answers. Wow, okay, we've got Cal saying four
- 33:21Speaker 2: ninety nine. Giannis says one dollar. Corey says ten dollars.
- 33:26Speaker 6: I'm stuck on Bozeman prices. Everything's expensive.
- 33:29Speaker 2: The correct answer is six dollars. Give me calls third
- 33:33Speaker 2: point and making him the winner of the price is right.
- 33:36Speaker 2: But we'll finish out the game anyway, Phil, how did
- 33:38Speaker 2: the chat do?
- 33:39Speaker 11: Uh?
- 33:39Speaker 7: Well?
- 33:39Speaker 5: First we had copy guy coming with five dollars, Okay,
- 33:42Speaker 5: good job. Brian came in with six, and then after
- 33:45Speaker 5: we all found out that it was a less expensive,
- 33:47Speaker 5: copy guy for some reason raised his price six.
- 33:50Speaker 2: All right, Brian, copy all right? Phil tell us about
- 33:54Speaker 2: the fifth and final item up forbid.
- 33:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I just want to do a little vamping here,
- 33:59Speaker 5: Spencer for a second, just want to bring this up here,
- 34:02Speaker 5: get rid of this comments. And then I look at
- 34:05Speaker 5: the script and then I say, hey, if white tails
- 34:10Speaker 5: aren't your thing, then how about a brand new boat?
- 34:12Speaker 5: This nineteen eighty nine sixteen foot aluminicraft John boat is
- 34:15Speaker 5: located in Rockville, Indiana. It comes with a twenty fifteen
- 34:19Speaker 5: twenty five horse force stroke engine, trolling motor, batteries, trailer,
- 34:23Speaker 5: and a badass Camo paint job. You'll be able to
- 34:26Speaker 5: catch all the catfish and kill all of the ducks
- 34:28Speaker 5: on the Wabash River with this nifty little skiff.
- 34:31Speaker 2: And she's available right now on boattrader dot com for
- 34:34Speaker 2: the low low price of Well, I'm not gonna tell you, guys,
- 34:38Speaker 2: what do you think that nineteen eighty nine John boat costs?
- 34:42Speaker 2: And I'll point out the script says, how about a
- 34:44Speaker 2: not brand new boat? This boat is not brand new.
- 34:47Speaker 4: It's a twenty fifteen forestrokeup.
- 34:50Speaker 2: That's what it says. But it's also been painted, eliminating
- 34:54Speaker 2: basically any chance you have of figuring out precisely what
- 34:57Speaker 2: that motor is. But they say, dang, brother, I know,
- 35:00Speaker 2: twenty fifth, twenty five horse four street.
- 35:04Speaker 4: I mean that's where the cost of that whole kid is.
- 35:08Speaker 13: Trailer anywhere.
- 35:10Speaker 2: She's a little trailer. She's got she's got bicycle, the
- 35:14Speaker 2: doughnut rails on there. Now back to the Michigan Hall
- 35:17Speaker 2: of Fame, it's two dollars. If you're a child, and
- 35:19Speaker 2: it's one dollar for a bag of feed to give
- 35:22Speaker 2: to the deer. So everyone should stop in Grass Lake,
- 35:25Speaker 2: Michigan and check that place out, and then you can
- 35:27Speaker 2: play some tennis afterwards with some D one athletes that
- 35:30Speaker 2: are in that family. All right, do you boys have
- 35:33Speaker 2: a price for this not brand new boat? It's nineteen
- 35:36Speaker 2: eighty nine John boat that is sixteen feet long. It's
- 35:40Speaker 2: an Allumic craft and has a twenty fifteen four.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Streng chat way. They call me Cal, Heartbeat of America.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Callahan Cal. That's right, Yeah, I.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Got my finger on the pulse.
- 35:51Speaker 7: Here.
- 35:51Speaker 2: We'll see what he knows about boat prices. He boys, ready,
- 35:54Speaker 2: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal saying
- 35:58Speaker 2: eight hundred one dollars, what Giannis says twenty two thousand
- 36:04Speaker 2: corey six hundred and ninety nine A lot of value?
- 36:08Speaker 2: How do you always have a twenty thousand dollars difference?
- 36:11Speaker 1: And I guess if you're listening to one of you
- 36:14Speaker 1: but telling us to come stro wandering in like geez.
- 36:18Speaker 12: I was gonna go get a loan to buy that,
- 36:21Speaker 12: The correct answer is three thousand, three hundred and ninety
- 36:25Speaker 12: nine dollars giving call his fourth point a dominant performance.
- 36:30Speaker 12: I can tell you Ryan in no way that that's
- 36:32Speaker 12: a five year old four stroke engine.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Listen, charge and painted over it.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Honestly, let me tell you how this works. If you're
- 36:39Speaker 1: not deeply uncomfortable and embarrassed with your first offer on
- 36:44Speaker 1: something on Craigslist, you are doing it.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Wrong, implying you should lowball him. Is that what you're saying?
- 36:49Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, that's what it's for. I understand that.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Ryan, man of the people Callahan with four points in
- 36:56Speaker 2: the price is right.
- 36:57Speaker 4: Hey, thanks for letting me play Spencer.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Okay, we'll see you later. Yeah, now, thanks for playing
- 37:03Speaker 2: on you. You remember to help control the pet population. Have
- 37:06Speaker 2: your pets Spade in New Oh.
- 37:07Speaker 5: Really quick yet Skylar guests aptly named by the way, Skyler,
- 37:12Speaker 5: you guess thirty three hundred Chase Wolf, You're a dirty cheater.
- 37:16Speaker 4: Cut it out, you know. I almost bought I was.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Hanging out with a bunch of commercial fishermen a long
- 37:24Speaker 1: time ago, and I almost bought a boat on Craig's List.
- 37:30Speaker 1: It was fresh off guidance season, had a bunch of cash,
- 37:33Speaker 1: and the dude got so pissed at my offer that
- 37:40Speaker 1: I kind of had to be like, Oh, I guess
- 37:43Speaker 1: me and my stack of cash are just gonna go
- 37:46Speaker 1: cry in the corner. But that guy's insult is what
- 37:50Speaker 1: separated me from being a successful commercial fisherman.
- 37:53Speaker 2: But you didn't buy it.
- 37:54Speaker 6: I didn't didn't know.
- 37:55Speaker 2: All right, let's take a break and get some listener feedback. Phil,
- 37:58Speaker 2: what's the chat have to say?
- 38:00Speaker 10: Uh?
- 38:00Speaker 5: Yeah, sure, let's see. I never know how to pronounce
- 38:06Speaker 5: this name. I'm sorry, hovah Jova and figure. Oh question
- 38:10Speaker 5: for the guys, do and if you have any untraditional
- 38:12Speaker 5: or unusual pieces of kid that you've adopted into your
- 38:14Speaker 5: hunting set up over the years, anything that you've stopped bringing.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Hm hmm, I this is untraditional. But are you guys
- 38:25Speaker 2: familiar with the app All Trails?
- 38:27Speaker 6: Sure?
- 38:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I've reserved saying this for a future hot
- 38:31Speaker 2: tip off, but I'll say it right now. All Trails
- 38:33Speaker 2: is primarily used by people who are not hunters and anglers,
- 38:36Speaker 2: And so they'll go on there and they'll do some
- 38:38Speaker 2: specific hike and then they'll they'll share photos and write
- 38:41Speaker 2: a review afterwards, and they give out details that no
- 38:45Speaker 2: haunter would ever say. They'll say, I saw ten elk
- 38:48Speaker 2: and a black bear, and then they'll even have pictures
- 38:51Speaker 2: to show it. And so you can go on there
- 38:53Speaker 2: and mind little information. If you're looking at doing a
- 38:56Speaker 2: hunt somewhere that has like named trailheads down at all Trails,
- 39:01Speaker 2: there's a free version you can get a lot of
- 39:02Speaker 2: this information. People are really nearly sharing a lot of
- 39:06Speaker 2: really good information that hunters are not going to tell you,
- 39:10Speaker 2: you know, on other apps that exist for this kind
- 39:13Speaker 2: of thing.
- 39:13Speaker 1: And Spencer built a little AI crawler that automatically scores
- 39:16Speaker 1: the bucks that people see.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you can be like, yeah, well I wish I
- 39:20Speaker 2: did so. I'd say that's an un traditional thing that
- 39:23Speaker 2: I've used for hunting.
- 39:24Speaker 6: Yeah, I do something similar On Facebook.
- 39:26Speaker 3: There's likes and whatnot, like.
- 39:28Speaker 4: Oh watch out, there's a black bear up.
- 39:30Speaker 3: This trailhead, Like, oh okay, well maybe I'll go spring bear.
- 39:34Speaker 2: I saw him two days ago about a mile from
- 39:36Speaker 2: the trailhead.
- 39:37Speaker 1: I'll do a thing I stopped bringing and for my
- 39:40Speaker 1: backpack trips, Like it used to just be like a
- 39:44Speaker 1: really common thing that you would hear or see in
- 39:48Speaker 1: all the hunting articles or backpacking articles of like trying
- 39:52Speaker 1: to pack light is like eliminate redundancies. And even if
- 39:57Speaker 1: if you're in a group, right, it's like you don't
- 40:00Speaker 1: bring three leather men tools like you maybe one person
- 40:04Speaker 1: packs a leather mentol right, even sharing a rifle ers
- 40:08Speaker 1: you know, sharing a sleeping bag depending on how ultra
- 40:11Speaker 1: light you want to get. But yeah, I've quit packing
- 40:16Speaker 1: like my my beanie, my tuc because every everything I
- 40:20Speaker 1: have typically has a hood on it, so you know,
- 40:24Speaker 1: it's a real common like sleeping kit. It's like, but
- 40:28Speaker 1: I just put my hood on and and have not
- 40:32Speaker 1: found any any need or want for the for the
- 40:35Speaker 1: tuke on the big backpack tours these days.
- 40:38Speaker 6: Hood's double just as good.
- 40:39Speaker 4: Yep.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Well, last thing about all trails is a lot of
- 40:41Speaker 2: people take photos so you can see exactly what the
- 40:44Speaker 2: area looks like. You get an idea that you know
- 40:47Speaker 2: something that on X can't really provide you these on
- 40:49Speaker 2: the ground photos, and that's super helpful to show you
- 40:52Speaker 2: where water is, what that stream looks like if you
- 40:54Speaker 2: think you can cross it, so that it's it's valuable
- 40:58Speaker 2: for people in the West.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Phil, what else we'll do one more?
- 41:01Speaker 5: Since we've got so a couple of people waiting on
- 41:02Speaker 5: the line, I just had oh, yeah. Here it is
- 41:05Speaker 5: question for Kleb Spencer. How are you feeling on Denver
- 41:09Speaker 5: Nuggets repeat championship this year?
- 41:11Speaker 2: I knew it in my bones in twenty twenty three
- 41:13Speaker 2: when they were going to win the championship. That was
- 41:15Speaker 2: one of the most satisfying things. It's like I knew
- 41:17Speaker 2: this all along the Nuggets were going to win that.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I didn't have that feeling last year. I don't have
- 41:21Speaker 2: that feeling this year. But they have a chance. They
- 41:24Speaker 2: I would say in the entire NBA they have. They're
- 41:27Speaker 2: one of the four best teams. They will be competitive.
- 41:30Speaker 2: It's just about how far Joker, Jamal and MPJ can
- 41:34Speaker 2: take us.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Wow.
- 41:35Speaker 1: First name, Besis. Listen, how you got those fancy pants seats?
- 41:39Speaker 1: I love down there on the court.
- 41:40Speaker 2: I love the Denver Nuggets.
- 41:42Speaker 11: Wow.
- 41:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I love chicken Nuggets.
- 41:45Speaker 4: All right, Moving on something in common.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Our next segment is one Minute Fishing. Do I feel lucky?
- 41:53Speaker 6: We'll do you dunk, go ahead, make my cast.
- 41:59Speaker 2: One minute Fishing is where we go live to someone
- 42:02Speaker 2: who's fishing and they have one minute to catch a fish,
- 42:04Speaker 2: and if they're successful, we'll make a five hundred dollars
- 42:06Speaker 2: donation to a conservation group. This week, our angler is
- 42:09Speaker 2: Christy Holmes in Maine and she's fishing for a donation
- 42:13Speaker 2: to the Downiest Salmon Federation. Christy, welcome to the show.
- 42:17Speaker 9: Hi, thanks for having me.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Christy. Tell us about what you're doing out on that
- 42:22Speaker 2: icy lake today.
- 42:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:23Speaker 9: We are actually on a tidal river, the Kenneback River,
- 42:27Speaker 9: are near kind of near the capital of our state, Augusta.
- 42:30Speaker 9: We are fishing for sea run rainbow smelts. You guys
- 42:34Speaker 9: are probably familiar with the little smelts. Well, these ones
- 42:37Speaker 9: are about seven to nine inches and some people using.
- 42:42Speaker 9: Some people kepting some smeuts in the background.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Is that is that a good Is that a good
- 42:47Speaker 2: holler we're hearing behind you.
- 42:49Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, don't get good hollers.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Yeah, but don't they kind of like push through and runs. Sorry,
- 42:55Speaker 1: are you missing your opportunity right now?
- 42:58Speaker 9: No, we've already caught about a dozen, so we're doing okay.
- 43:02Speaker 9: But this is like a commercials smelt operation. So you
- 43:06Speaker 9: rent a shack for about six hours, and you know,
- 43:11Speaker 9: the most people use the smelt to eat. They're wicked good.
- 43:15Speaker 9: They're my favorite. Chop the head off, take the DUTs out,
- 43:18Speaker 9: fry them. Holes, you eat the bones, eat the fins.
- 43:21Speaker 9: Some people keep them eight for like Togue and Pike.
- 43:25Speaker 9: But it's just a really fun way to enjoy main winters.
- 43:29Speaker 2: And tell us about the tactic you're using today to
- 43:32Speaker 2: try to catch these smelt.
- 43:33Speaker 9: So come on in in our fat and i'll show you.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Christy is walking us into this ice hut, and the
- 43:44Speaker 2: ice huts are so close that they're dang, you're touching
- 43:46Speaker 2: each other. Yeah.
- 43:48Speaker 9: So we've got raceways so holes in the ice here,
- 43:53Speaker 9: and then we've got jig boards, we've got jig coles,
- 43:57Speaker 9: and we've got the smelts we've caught so far there
- 44:02Speaker 9: and a couple heads are missing because my friends Kathy
- 44:08Speaker 9: and Jill here is tradition when you catch your first
- 44:10Speaker 9: ever one smelt head.
- 44:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I like it.
- 44:15Speaker 2: And Christy has a baby on her hip right now.
- 44:18Speaker 2: That baby gets a limit of smelt as well, right,
- 44:21Speaker 2: Oh of.
- 44:22Speaker 9: Course, yeah, the limit is one gallons.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Oh that's uh, that's bigger than the child that she's holding.
- 44:28Speaker 2: All right, Chrissy, you're one minute of fishing starts as
- 44:31Speaker 2: soon as your tackle hits the water.
- 44:34Speaker 7: All right, Well, there are already, so we.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Can she's Okay, well we're going.
- 44:37Speaker 9: To start, so we're watching for any little movement here or.
- 44:43Speaker 10: These jig poles.
- 44:45Speaker 9: Okay, we're about twenty seven feet of water.
- 44:51Speaker 2: And are you fishing on the bottom or are these suspended?
- 44:54Speaker 9: Is going to change about today?
- 44:58Speaker 2: Okay, you are lower by about seventeen. You are twenty
- 45:03Speaker 2: seconds into your one minute? Christy, is there any bycatch
- 45:07Speaker 2: while you're doing this?
- 45:10Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 45:10Speaker 9: I caught a pod before, and I've caught a headlamp before.
- 45:16Speaker 9: You use pieces of sandworms as your bait, and then
- 45:19Speaker 9: you have thanks, so we will fight.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Cool, you've got fifteen seconds left.
- 45:26Speaker 7: Well, are you guys touching any.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Christy was a little pessimistic. She said this is better
- 45:35Speaker 2: done in the evening, so we uh we put her
- 45:38Speaker 2: in a tough spot. All right, Christy, your one minute
- 45:42Speaker 2: is up. We couldn't make it happen today, but thank
- 45:46Speaker 2: you for joining us and sharing us how a smelter
- 45:48Speaker 2: does it in main?
- 45:49Speaker 7: I hope you guys make it out to come smelting.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Sometimes that's that looks like a ton of fun. Thank you, Christy.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Thanks cal you ever have you ever eaten smelt?
- 46:00Speaker 4: Uh? No?
- 46:01Speaker 1: I you know I had like a scandal Hoovian grandma
- 46:05Speaker 1: great grandma, and she was Hoovian. That's that's how grandma
- 46:09Speaker 1: said it. That would get like very upset over the
- 46:15Speaker 1: fact that I used smelt for pike bait here in Montana.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Very upset because she wanted to eat him. Yeah, okay,
- 46:22Speaker 2: Scanda Hoovian? Is that? Is that a derogatory term you
- 46:24Speaker 2: think from your grandpa?
- 46:26Speaker 4: Well? I never took it that way, but it's possible.
- 46:30Speaker 4: It's possible in Norwegian.
- 46:32Speaker 6: I don't take any offense.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Good, we're safe, all right. Our next segment is hot
- 46:37Speaker 2: tip Off. Jo, turn your head.
- 46:41Speaker 4: What's that thing?
- 46:42Speaker 8: Don't use?
- 46:47Speaker 10: Yeah, that's salty, ya, that's salty.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Well fill that trust. The next time we go to karaoke,
- 47:02Speaker 2: you're gonna sing some chapel roan. Can we can? I
- 47:04Speaker 2: count on you for that?
- 47:05Speaker 4: You have my word?
- 47:06Speaker 9: All right.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Hot tip off is where two listeners go head to
- 47:09Speaker 2: head with competing pieces of advice, and after we hear
- 47:12Speaker 2: each tip, we'll declare which one is hotter. If you
- 47:14Speaker 2: have a hot tip, take a one minute video on
- 47:16Speaker 2: your phone and email it to radio at the meadeater
- 47:19Speaker 2: dot com with the subject line hot tip off. All right,
- 47:22Speaker 2: let's hear this week's hot tips Tiler Harm.
- 47:30Speaker 14: I'm Tyler Harm, and this is my hot tip off
- 47:33Speaker 14: for those of you who hunt out west. Keep an
- 47:37Speaker 14: old tent rain fly in your pack. It'll serve two purposes. One,
- 47:43Speaker 14: you can tie it between trees and use it as
- 47:46Speaker 14: a rain fly if you get caught out in the
- 47:48Speaker 14: rain without your rain gear.
- 47:50Speaker 11: Or you can lay it out.
- 47:55Speaker 6: When you're cutting up your meat.
- 47:57Speaker 14: Gives you a good clean staging area for your meat.
- 48:00Speaker 14: And it's a lighter weight than a tart and works
- 48:04Speaker 14: great for keeping that meat clean.
- 48:06Speaker 6: Crucial nice tailing.
- 48:08Speaker 15: Thunder Loon, Welcome to another hot tip off. My name
- 48:15Speaker 15: is Dylan, and I'm here to tell you how I
- 48:18Speaker 15: make a cheap, affordable, yeah, very effective set checking system.
- 48:23Speaker 15: You're only gonna need a few things. For those who
- 48:26Speaker 15: don't chew, you can always use, you know yourself an
- 48:29Speaker 15: altoys container or you know, a film canister. Those who
- 48:34Speaker 15: like to, you know, dabble with the old devil's dirt there,
- 48:38Speaker 15: but you'll big old lipper in upper decky. You take
- 48:42Speaker 15: one of these, you drill about a quarter inch hole
- 48:47Speaker 15: right in yonder Oh. If you want the picture, you
- 48:50Speaker 15: know you like the deer. Put it in the backside,
- 48:52Speaker 15: doesn't matter. After gathering this stuff, which is called milkweed,
- 48:57Speaker 15: which we all probably know, pull off the seat, twist
- 49:01Speaker 15: her up and try to make a long almost like
- 49:03Speaker 15: a length of rope with twisting. Okay, then you take it,
- 49:08Speaker 15: you pack it down in Then the more the merrier,
- 49:13Speaker 15: pack it right down in there. Okay. So if you
- 49:17Speaker 15: want to get it out of the hole and you
- 49:19Speaker 15: just take your drill beat, okay, you pull it up.
- 49:24Speaker 15: There's that down instead of using powder or wow checking
- 49:31Speaker 15: a flag. Yeah, this right in your pocket cost absolutely nothing.
- 49:35Speaker 15: It's a piece of something. We're gonna throw it in
- 49:37Speaker 15: the trash or recycling and yeah, you give me get
- 49:41Speaker 15: one with the cool pictures on it.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Oh, he's got a few hands.
- 49:46Speaker 15: That's the hot tip off.
- 49:48Speaker 2: And you can see these hot tips on our YouTube
- 49:51Speaker 2: video right now. All right, Calan Corey, do you like
- 49:55Speaker 2: Dylan's hot tip about the homemade wndicator or Tyler's hot
- 49:59Speaker 2: tip about the tent rainfly man?
- 50:01Speaker 3: I love to recycle. They're both very smart.
- 50:04Speaker 4: And useful windicator hundred percent.
- 50:08Speaker 1: I mean, nobody's wrong and right, it's just I mean,
- 50:13Speaker 1: it's it's great.
- 50:14Speaker 2: I agree with the Windicator. I also carry milkweed when
- 50:17Speaker 2: I'm white tail hunting. What I do differently than him, though,
- 50:20Speaker 2: which is worse, is I just like shove it in
- 50:23Speaker 2: a loose spot in my bag, and then if I
- 50:25Speaker 2: have one hundred little seeds from milkweed in there, you
- 50:28Speaker 2: see all one hundred of those. But he he has
- 50:31Speaker 2: those very tightly packed in that dip can that's real clean,
- 50:34Speaker 2: and he can just pull out little strands at a time.
- 50:36Speaker 2: I love that.
- 50:37Speaker 1: And he said he's pulling the seeds out too, which
- 50:39Speaker 1: is like, I'm not spreading milkweed.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Everywhere right right.
- 50:45Speaker 11: There.
- 50:45Speaker 1: There was a company that had a very similar deal
- 50:49Speaker 1: and it was like polyester fibers, and I just hated it.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I hate.
- 50:53Speaker 4: I'm like, you're you literally made trash.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Or Cow's voting for the Windicator, Corey. What's your vote? Tyler?
- 51:01Speaker 6: I love your tip, but Dylan wins.
- 51:03Speaker 2: I also like Tyler's tip. I would say that sounded
- 51:06Speaker 2: pretty dang loud to be hauling around in your backpack.
- 51:10Speaker 3: Yeah, you stuff it in the bottom, sure, I never
- 51:12Speaker 3: know it's there.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Yeah, But I love the idea of sliding your meat
- 51:15Speaker 2: on that thing instead of just whatever's convenient nearby. Now,
- 51:19Speaker 2: Dylan is our winner, and he is going to get
- 51:22Speaker 2: a brand new treed up Gnome T shirt. You can
- 51:26Speaker 2: see it here on the camera. This is dropping today
- 51:29Speaker 2: in the Meat Eater store and they sell out very fast.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Last time I was told they sold out the day of.
- 51:34Speaker 2: So Tyler is getting exclusive one of those, as well
- 51:37Speaker 2: as a Meat Eater trivia board game that has been
- 51:40Speaker 2: signed by the crew. We're going to get those in
- 51:42Speaker 2: the mail to you, Dylan. Yeah, so, ty I'm sorry
- 51:46Speaker 2: I said Tyler won. Dylan won. Dylan won the board
- 51:49Speaker 2: game and he won the T shirt. You're gonna hear
- 51:51Speaker 2: from Corey about how to get those sent to the mail.
- 51:54Speaker 4: Yep, really quick.
- 51:58Speaker 5: Just so we don't have any sort of technical hiccup
- 52:00Speaker 5: for you, Spencer, we had Dave on the line. He
- 52:02Speaker 5: was hanging out for a while, our next guest, and
- 52:04Speaker 5: I'm not seeing any video or audio from him. So Dave,
- 52:06Speaker 5: if you're if you're around, if you turn anything your
- 52:07Speaker 5: micro camera off, go ahead and turn that stuff back
- 52:09Speaker 5: on now. Otherwise we might just have to have him on.
- 52:13Speaker 10: Well.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Can can we hear from the chat for a little
- 52:15Speaker 2: bit film and then yeah, maybe maybe in the meantime,
- 52:18Speaker 2: we'll hear from David.
- 52:19Speaker 6: Yeah, we're live, folks, We're live. It's what it's all about.
- 52:22Speaker 5: It's what we're doing here. Cal I have a five
- 52:24Speaker 5: month old chocolate lab. Any advice on a training program,
- 52:27Speaker 5: I know it's kind of a big question, but maybe
- 52:28Speaker 5: someplace to start, just I.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Mean, it's just consistency, Like get a routine in place,
- 52:34Speaker 1: and it all everything is structured off of sit, stay, come,
- 52:40Speaker 1: you know, and for me really like sit should also
- 52:43Speaker 1: mean stay. So start basic, always return to the basics.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Don't add too much too fast. There's not a whole
- 52:53Speaker 1: lot of secret here, is just consistency and do not
- 52:56Speaker 1: over complicate things.
- 52:58Speaker 4: You'll be You'll be great. Cool.
- 53:01Speaker 5: And this is another kind of big general question, but
- 53:03Speaker 5: maybe maybe some words of inspiration or someplace to start.
- 53:06Speaker 5: Free Crank says that he's been hunting turkey for four
- 53:09Speaker 5: years and he hasn't been able to seal the deal.
- 53:11Speaker 5: Any advice. He's located in Western Pa.
- 53:16Speaker 3: Man, keep at it. I've been there four years, not
- 53:19Speaker 3: tagging out. Then the next year we'll buy him.
- 53:23Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, I mean, do your.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Due diligence so you know you're hunting good areas. And
- 53:31Speaker 1: then as my buddy Jim, who's like the most turkey
- 53:34Speaker 1: killing son of a gun I know, he says, kill
- 53:37Speaker 1: him with your ass, Frank the free crank.
- 53:41Speaker 6: Yeah, sit and call commit see what happens.
- 53:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you might be able to answer this one.
- 53:48Speaker 5: This is from Harrison.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Cal.
- 53:49Speaker 4: Do you still have your own podcast?
- 53:51Speaker 5: And what GPS collar do you use for snort things?
- 53:54Speaker 4: I've been running Garman.
- 53:59Speaker 1: Like a track caller like you use for hounds, or
- 54:02Speaker 1: like real lanky point and dogs, which you know is
- 54:06Speaker 1: definitely overkill for a lab, but I just like the data.
- 54:10Speaker 1: It's pretty fascinating to me how much a working dog
- 54:13Speaker 1: can move. So and then yes, Cal's week interview. It's
- 54:18Speaker 1: the col of the wild Feed these day. It's a
- 54:21Speaker 1: little bit of a rebrand. But yeah, tons of stuff
- 54:23Speaker 1: happening right now in the world of conservation and the legislation.
- 54:27Speaker 1: So give her a listen. Thank you, Phil.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Are you seeing Dave in the weight room at all?
- 54:32Speaker 4: I am not.
- 54:33Speaker 5: I saw that he tried to hot back in, but
- 54:35Speaker 5: it said they were still having trouble connecting to us.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Let's give the camp, let's get answer a few more
- 54:39Speaker 2: questions and if he's not there in a few minutes,
- 54:42Speaker 2: we'll just send the show.
- 54:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:43Speaker 11: Sure.
- 54:43Speaker 5: Keep sending those questions in guys, Trav says, Hey, guys,
- 54:47Speaker 5: someone wants to hunt and collect firewood on some property
- 54:50Speaker 5: I own. I'm fine with it, but wondering if I
- 54:51Speaker 5: should have him to sign a contract or a waiver
- 54:53Speaker 5: or something. Check with your state a lot of states.
- 54:59Speaker 1: If you provide i'd a free public access, the state's
- 55:05Speaker 1: liability will cover We'll cover you. But yeah, i'd you know,
- 55:11Speaker 1: I'd definitely do a little due diligence. And obviously if
- 55:15Speaker 1: they're knocking trees down, that's a little more severe than
- 55:19Speaker 1: if they're just picking stuff up off the ground.
- 55:21Speaker 2: I have knocked on hundreds of doors, Trav asking for
- 55:25Speaker 2: hunting permission. I've never had anyone ask me to sign
- 55:28Speaker 2: a contract or a waiver, but I wouldn't scoff at
- 55:30Speaker 2: it if they did. It totally makes sense, especially if
- 55:33Speaker 2: they're a stranger to you, like I am to most
- 55:35Speaker 2: of these people. I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened at
- 55:38Speaker 2: this point. I think it's National Deer Association provides a
- 55:42Speaker 2: contract that would cover you. I believe they have one.
- 55:45Speaker 2: Maybe for when you're leasing a property, and for one
- 55:48Speaker 2: when you're just like hunting on private land. So go
- 55:51Speaker 2: check out the National Deer Association. They might be able
- 55:54Speaker 2: to help you out and fill It looks like our
- 55:56Speaker 2: guest Dave is now in the chat, so I think
- 55:58Speaker 2: we're going to do that interview and then call it
- 56:00Speaker 2: a show.
- 56:01Speaker 5: Sounds good, all right?
- 56:02Speaker 2: Joining us on the line last is the founder of
- 56:05Speaker 2: the Lost Apple Project, David ben Scotter. David and his
- 56:09Speaker 2: network of apple detectives have found thirty varieties of apples
- 56:13Speaker 2: that were previously lost. David, Welcome to the show.
- 56:18Speaker 11: Hi, thank you, thank you for letting me be here.
- 56:20Speaker 2: First thing, tell us about the Lost Apple Project.
- 56:25Speaker 11: Okay, yeah, the Lost Apple Project began about ten years
- 56:30Speaker 11: ago and kind of by accident. I'm retired law enforcement
- 56:34Speaker 11: and I was taken care of a disabled neighbor's orchard.
- 56:40Speaker 11: And one day she came and asked me what could
- 56:46Speaker 11: I go on pick some apples for She lived on
- 56:49Speaker 11: her family's property and they had been on the properties
- 56:53Speaker 11: since before nineteen fifteen. And so I grabbed a buck,
- 56:58Speaker 11: and I grabbed a ladder, it over to her orchard,
- 57:01Speaker 11: came back ten minutes later. I said, I can't pick
- 57:03Speaker 11: a single apple. Those trees haven't been pruned, you know,
- 57:07Speaker 11: probably fifty years, maybe more. And I said, but I
- 57:11Speaker 11: do know how to prune apple trees. So I'll this
- 57:15Speaker 11: this winter, when they're dormant, I'll go prune the apple trees.
- 57:19Speaker 11: And I said, within two three years, you'll have lots
- 57:21Speaker 11: of apples. So that winter we get quite a bit
- 57:26Speaker 11: of snow here. We're butted right up against Idaho and
- 57:30Speaker 11: about two hundred miles from the Canadian border. And I
- 57:33Speaker 11: was probably on a winter day, and I was thinking,
- 57:35Speaker 11: you know, those apples are not going to be the
- 57:37Speaker 11: same kind of apples that I go and eat today.
- 57:40Speaker 11: And so I called her up and I said, I
- 57:42Speaker 11: was just curious, you know, do you know what's growing
- 57:44Speaker 11: up there?
- 57:44Speaker 5: And she remembered, should come back in a sec.
- 57:50Speaker 11: One apple, yelder's first apple that you eat during the
- 57:55Speaker 11: summer at ripens in July. And she didn't know any
- 57:57Speaker 11: of the other apples. So she called her brother. He
- 58:00Speaker 11: remember that there was four trees at the very top
- 58:04Speaker 11: of the orchard. They were called a Wealthy which just
- 58:07Speaker 11: happened to be the first bread apple tree in America.
- 58:12Speaker 11: And it was bred in Wisconsint because it was such
- 58:15Speaker 11: cold temperatures up there, they couldn't get any apples to live.
- 58:20Speaker 11: Wealthy was a wonderful apple and it solved that problem.
- 58:24Speaker 11: And I got did the biggest mistake of my life.
- 58:27Speaker 11: I got on the internet and I started typing in,
- 58:31Speaker 11: you know, apple for our area and stuff like that,
- 58:34Speaker 11: and I was just.
- 58:35Speaker 2: Fastened tough connection for Davey Washington.
- 58:41Speaker 11: Everybody knows that Washington grows the most apples in the
- 58:45Speaker 11: United States, but those are all along the Columbia River
- 58:49Speaker 11: and the tributaries of the Columbia River where they can
- 58:51Speaker 11: irrigate the orchards, and they've got really hot summer days,
- 58:55Speaker 11: cool nights. We're over in eastern Washington, where it's rolling hills.
- 59:00Speaker 11: Nothing is irrigated, but we do have deep soils and
- 59:04Speaker 11: a lot of ravines and things like that. And so,
- 59:09Speaker 11: to make a long story short, I just started researching.
- 59:12Speaker 11: I found out that there was a book by a
- 59:15Speaker 11: fell a boy the name Elite Calhoun called Old Southern Apples.
- 59:18Speaker 11: And this book listed the first half of the book
- 59:21Speaker 11: was all old Southern apples that still exist today, and
- 59:24Speaker 11: the last half of the book were extinct Old Southern apples,
- 59:29Speaker 11: and that was the first time I even knew there
- 59:31Speaker 11: was any such a thing as extinct apples.
- 59:34Speaker 10: And just so.
- 59:36Speaker 11: Excuse me, it just so happens that there have been
- 59:39Speaker 11: about seventeen thousand apples that originated in the United States
- 59:46Speaker 11: and Canada, and fell a by the name of Dan
- 59:49Speaker 11: Bussy just wrote a book about that. I think it
- 59:51Speaker 11: came out about five six years ago, listing all seventeen
- 59:55Speaker 11: thousand apples there and whatever is known about it. Those
- 1:00:01Speaker 11: seventeen thousand apples, only five thousand of those apples exist today.
- 1:00:06Speaker 11: And so anyway, I started looking at the list of apples,
- 1:00:11Speaker 11: and then I also was kind of curious about a famous,
- 1:00:17Speaker 11: at least locally famous fellow. He was a nursery then
- 1:00:20Speaker 11: about I lived near Spoke.
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: Spoke Anne.
- 1:00:25Speaker 11: He was saying, can Washington, Miles, Sydney, Colfax, Washington, which
- 1:00:29Speaker 11: is really close to Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.
- 1:00:33Speaker 11: And I was reading old newspapers about him and apples
- 1:00:38Speaker 11: that he had introduced and things like that. And I
- 1:00:42Speaker 11: was reading there was a little article about county fairs.
- 1:00:46Speaker 11: This was back in the early nineteen hundreds. I thought, well,
- 1:00:49Speaker 11: that's interesting. They're listing the county fair winners. And I
- 1:00:51Speaker 11: started looking at that. I immediately knew that I was
- 1:00:55Speaker 11: onto something that was important. And the reason for that
- 1:00:59Speaker 11: was they listed every apple that was entered in the fair.
- 1:01:03Speaker 11: So I thought, if they do this over a course
- 1:01:06Speaker 11: of let's say ten years, I will know pretty much
- 1:01:09Speaker 11: what was growing. And this happened to be Whitman County,
- 1:01:12Speaker 11: Washington in the early nineteen hundreds. I started writing the
- 1:01:16Speaker 11: names down to these apples. Turns out about I beliast
- 1:01:21Speaker 11: four of the apples that were entered in the county
- 1:01:24Speaker 11: fair were listed in Lee Calhoun's book as extinct apples.
- 1:01:29Speaker 11: And I thought, oh gosh, you know this is I'm
- 1:01:32Speaker 11: the only person that knows this. You know, there's nobody here.
- 1:01:35Speaker 11: There are other apple hunters around the United States. There's
- 1:01:40Speaker 11: John Bunker up in Maine. There's Tom Brown in North Carolina.
- 1:01:45Speaker 11: Lee Calhoun he was in North Carolina. But if you
- 1:01:51Speaker 11: happen to notice that all those people lived on the
- 1:01:53Speaker 11: East coast, I had no idea why. Figured there must
- 1:01:56Speaker 11: be some some reason why that nobody ever hunted apples
- 1:02:01Speaker 11: out west, but there must be a logical explanation for it.
- 1:02:04Speaker 11: But I thought, you know what, I'm going to just
- 1:02:07Speaker 11: try a little bit to find one of the apples.
- 1:02:10Speaker 11: And that apple that I was looking for is the Wallbridge.
- 1:02:13Speaker 11: And the Wallbridge was entered by six different people in
- 1:02:16Speaker 11: Whitman County in between nineteen hundred and nineteen ten. So
- 1:02:22Speaker 11: I called some apple identification experts that I knew who
- 1:02:27Speaker 11: were over in Oregon, and I said, it would it
- 1:02:30Speaker 11: be okay if I sent you, like, you know, three
- 1:02:32Speaker 11: four or five bags of apples and you could see
- 1:02:36Speaker 11: if they're the Wallbridge apple. And they said, yeah, go
- 1:02:39Speaker 11: right ahead. And I chose the Wallbridge and not only
- 1:02:42Speaker 11: because it was entered more times than any other apple
- 1:02:45Speaker 11: in the fair, but also because it was rather distinct looking.
- 1:02:50Speaker 11: It was a red apple with very crimson stripes on
- 1:02:54Speaker 11: the apple. So this was I believe this is about
- 1:02:56Speaker 11: two thousand and thirteen. And I started looking around Women County,
- 1:03:03Speaker 11: which again seventy miles south of me. I went through
- 1:03:06Speaker 11: a little town of Colefax, which had three nurseries. In
- 1:03:11Speaker 11: that town, I had found a little catalogs of the
- 1:03:16Speaker 11: apples that they grew, and nurseries nearby that grew apples.
- 1:03:20Speaker 11: Wallbridge again, it was very popular. I found a few trees.
- 1:03:26Speaker 11: Ended up finding I believe three or four trees with
- 1:03:29Speaker 11: apples that were red with very crimson striping on them,
- 1:03:34Speaker 11: and they looked like to me somebody who doesn't I
- 1:03:37Speaker 11: still can't identify apples worth beans, but I thought that
- 1:03:41Speaker 11: these might be the lost Wallbridge apple. Put them all
- 1:03:44Speaker 11: in a box, was getting ready to ship it off,
- 1:03:46Speaker 11: and I happened to drive by a water pump station
- 1:03:50Speaker 11: in Colefax, Washington, and hanging over this water pump station
- 1:03:55Speaker 11: was the weirdest apple I've ever seen was an apple
- 1:03:59Speaker 11: that had corner to it they collar ridges, but I
- 1:04:03Speaker 11: thought it was just a really strange looking apple, And
- 1:04:06Speaker 11: so I picked some of those apples too, stuck them
- 1:04:09Speaker 11: in a plastic bag they had. Uh the experts, I
- 1:04:14Speaker 11: want you to send them like six or seven apples
- 1:04:17Speaker 11: that you picked them, where they were from. All these
- 1:04:20Speaker 11: are important things. They sent those apples off. To make
- 1:04:24Speaker 11: a long story short, all the Wallbridge apples were not Walbridge.
- 1:04:29Speaker 11: And uh, that's still kind of our white whale. We're
- 1:04:34Speaker 11: still looking so still haven't found it. However, what's that
- 1:04:38Speaker 11: still haven't found it? Still have not found that apple.
- 1:04:42Speaker 11: But the other apple happened to turn out to be
- 1:04:45Speaker 11: the yellow. Let's see, it's the fall Geniting, and the
- 1:04:50Speaker 11: Fall Geniting was the first lost apple we found, and
- 1:04:55Speaker 11: uh just got us off, got us off to a
- 1:04:58Speaker 11: good start.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: And what's the the strangest place that you found one
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: of these thirty lost apple varieties?
- 1:05:07Speaker 11: Well, the strangest place was an apple closest to where
- 1:05:10Speaker 11: I live. I always thought that these apples were going
- 1:05:16Speaker 11: to be in at least a few counties away from me,
- 1:05:20Speaker 11: And then I knew about this apple tree. I had
- 1:05:24Speaker 11: gone hunting, and I knew this was one of my
- 1:05:27Speaker 11: favorite places to hunt because there was an old apple
- 1:05:30Speaker 11: tree right next to a swamp. And although that apple
- 1:05:34Speaker 11: tree was probably one hundred and thirty years old, it
- 1:05:37Speaker 11: was in really good shape. The apples were wonderful. I
- 1:05:41Speaker 11: actually have one of the apples here and this this
- 1:05:47Speaker 11: was determined to be the Shackleford, and the Shackleford was
- 1:05:52Speaker 11: one of the most popular apples in the late eighteen
- 1:05:56Speaker 11: hundreds early nineteen hundreds. Fortunately, I think probably the reason
- 1:06:02Speaker 11: it became lost was it was just a red apple,
- 1:06:08Speaker 11: nothing remarkable about it, but it was It's an excellent apple,
- 1:06:12Speaker 11: and actually I think it's one of my top three apples,
- 1:06:16Speaker 11: and uh, I think it actually could compete to be
- 1:06:20Speaker 11: a grocery store apple today, a commercial variety. I don't
- 1:06:24Speaker 11: think it's as good as oh apples like Crimson Crisp
- 1:06:29Speaker 11: or Honey Crisp or or some of those, but I
- 1:06:33Speaker 11: think some of the other apple.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Dave, what what is the best tasting lost apple that
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: you found?
- 1:06:43Speaker 11: Well, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm I wish washy, I
- 1:06:47Speaker 11: can't tell you that, but I've got three for a favorites.
- 1:06:51Speaker 11: There's that one, the Shackleford, and another one's called the
- 1:06:56Speaker 11: gold Ridge, and finally the last one is called Kitty
- 1:07:01Speaker 11: and this is a little Kittagesky. And again this would
- 1:07:04Speaker 11: not make a very good commercial variety today because it's
- 1:07:09Speaker 11: too small. I think it's Stark Brothers has a an
- 1:07:16Speaker 11: apple that they advertise as a lunch box apple. It's
- 1:07:20Speaker 11: a small apple called a pixie crunch. This is about
- 1:07:23Speaker 11: the size of a pixie crunch and it could go
- 1:07:26Speaker 11: and if you had a child in school, you stick
- 1:07:28Speaker 11: that in their lunch. But commercially, I don't think it
- 1:07:31Speaker 11: could ever make it. But it has a wonderful taste
- 1:07:34Speaker 11: to do it, and it was it was from from
- 1:07:39Speaker 11: the South and it's just a wonderful apple.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Now, how can listeners help with the lost apple project?
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: And what should they do if they think they know
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: about a lost apple tree?
- 1:07:51Speaker 11: Well, I can tell you a few things. First of all,
- 1:07:53Speaker 11: if you live in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho, get a
- 1:07:59Speaker 11: hold of me and I'll give you some information about
- 1:08:04Speaker 11: that in a minute, and I will I will get
- 1:08:09Speaker 11: your apples to our apple identification experts. Now, if you're
- 1:08:13Speaker 11: not in Oregon, Idaho, or Washington, there's another thing that
- 1:08:18Speaker 11: we can do, and we we're working with Washington State
- 1:08:23Speaker 11: University and they're doing it an apple DNA project And
- 1:08:31Speaker 11: if you contact me, I will send you, however many
- 1:08:36Speaker 11: little tubes you want. And DNA from an apple tree
- 1:08:40Speaker 11: is actually not obtained from the apple itself. It's from
- 1:08:44Speaker 11: a leaf of the tree. So you don't have to
- 1:08:46Speaker 11: wait till fall to do this, you know, in in
- 1:08:49Speaker 11: May or June, when the tree is fully leafed out.
- 1:08:54Speaker 11: I'll send you instructions on how to take a leaf
- 1:08:58Speaker 11: and put it in this tube and mail it to us.
- 1:09:01Speaker 11: And Washington State University has over three thousand apple cultivars
- 1:09:07Speaker 11: in their database and we've had success. I would say
- 1:09:12Speaker 11: about fifty percent success rate and identifying apples. That way,
- 1:09:21Speaker 11: patient experts who use the basically fifty different characteristics of
- 1:09:27Speaker 11: an apple, including how long the stem is, what shape
- 1:09:31Speaker 11: the seed is, all the things that I'm totally unable
- 1:09:35Speaker 11: to do, and that they can do. That's how we
- 1:09:40Speaker 11: send local apples to at least the first stage, and
- 1:09:44Speaker 11: then if they can't identify the apples, then we move
- 1:09:48Speaker 11: on to the DNA testing.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: Also now, you can learn more about David's story and
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: apple hunting in his new book called Lost Apples, The

- 1:10:03Speaker 4: Thank you, that was awesome.

- 1:11:52Speaker 1: dark cute.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Will Snort be there?
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: Snort's been there two years in a row now, so
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: she's taking a break.
- 1:11:57Speaker 11: And then.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll have a first light booth and and awesome,
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: just an awesome conservation event like PFQF does a really
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: really really good job of getting people up to snuff
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: on what they need to know for all the habitat
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: programs and farm bill and and stuff that may not
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: sound super sexy and fun, but they make it fun.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: And and if you need a little little lube to
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: get that going, there's a bar on every corner in
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: the on the show floor.
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: And then Sunday we have.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: An awesome fundraiser lunch to kind of wrap things up
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: with North American Grouse Partnership and we're talking about the

- 1:12:45Speaker 1: grasslands are the most threatened ecosystem in North America.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: So happening in Kansas City next week. Last question, what's
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: your favorite apple cal are you? Are you loyal to
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: any variety when you're in the grocery door.
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: I have not personally purchased an apple in many, many years.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: How do you acquire your apples? You just don't eat apples?
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: No, I mean, I'm like, not a big sugar guy.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: What's your favorite apple?
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: I'm a big apple snob, like I don't let my
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: wife buy apples.
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: Tell me more. Tell are you agreeing? No?
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: Because Adrian is. And if I anything other than a
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: Honey Crisp, she gets.
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: Let's make this show ten more minutes. What's your favorite apple?
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: Then, Corey, Yeah, I'll second the Honey Crisp or pink
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: Lady's my two favorites. I'm going through the whole bushel
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: and feeling everyone.
- 1:13:35Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: And I'm that guy.
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: Who will go into a grocery store with apples on
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: my grocery list and I'll walk out if I can't
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: find the right one.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: Buddy, I'm with man. I worked the produce section of
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: Walmart my freshman year of college. I didn't really care
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: for making minimum wage, so I got my money back
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: by grazing on apples in the freezer back there, and
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: I really became like a small ya for apples at
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: that point. I feel like you could a hand in one.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: I could have taken it. By and been like, that's
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: a jazz apple. Now that one, there's a gala apple.
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: That one's a honey crisp. My favorite to the pink
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: lady in the honey crisp that you can't go wrong.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: I especially love honey crisp because they come from the
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: University of Minnesota. They were created there.
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: I have you know that, Phil Oh, Yeah, I got
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: Adrians from there, so that might that might have to
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: do with her her honey crisp.
- 1:14:21Speaker 7: You know.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: I feel like an honorary Minnesota and an honorary Colorado
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: as well as a Montana and in style Dakota. So
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: I claimed four states too. I never lived in. But
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: that's that's one thing I really like about honey crisp apples,
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: as they came from the u of Yeah.
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: And one of my favorite celebrity sidings was we went
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: mini golfing out outside of the Twin Cities. It was
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: that's really cool courses and then in the in the
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: middle of the woods and we drove by the farm
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: where the honey crisp apple was was you know, invented?
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: It seems like a weird word.
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: What's the what what would be the word to use?
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: And the like they collect a patent on it, so
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: it is like something.
- 1:14:56Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: Yeah, And they had signs everywhere, like home on the
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: Honey Crisp Apple, and it was I felt like, yeah
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: it was. I was starstruck.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, how about them apples? All right, we'll see you
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: back here next weeks. More Apple talk. I'm needy to rate.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: Thanks for lasting
