- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up Sooners? Thank you for joining us today. Always
- 0:03Speaker 1: glad to have you. Exciting game. Can't say anything less
- 0:07Speaker 1: than that. I think this game meant a little bit
- 0:09Speaker 1: more than people realized. And I want to spend a
- 0:12Speaker 1: few minutes on that today. This was the first time
- 0:14Speaker 1: that Oklahoma and Mississippi State had ever played a football game.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And it was the Sooners' first trip to Starkville. On
- 0:22Speaker 1: top of that, it was Brent Venables against Jeff Levy,
- 0:24Speaker 1: a guy who played at Oklahoma and called plays for
- 0:27Speaker 1: Venables in Norman before he took the Mississippi State job.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Oklahoma came into this game right in the middle of
- 0:34Speaker 1: the SEC grind. And in this league, every October Saturday
- 0:38Speaker 1: has ripple effects that reach all the way through the
- 0:41Speaker 1: end of the season. So we're going to get into
- 0:43Speaker 1: what this game means and what the result says about
- 0:45Speaker 1: Oklahoma going forward. Just before we do that, I will
- 0:49Speaker 1: remind you that All of our recaps are brought to
- 0:51Speaker 1: you by PrizePix, who just launched PrizePix Packs, real football, basketball,

- 1:24Speaker 1: in the description. Now, on to this game. Oklahoma leads
- 1:30Speaker 1: Mississippi State 20-7 with 6 minutes and 3 seconds left
- 1:34Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter in Starkville. The Sooners have the ball,
- 1:38Speaker 1: first down, inside Bulldog territory. My headline, right up front.
- 1:42Speaker 1: This is the cleanest John Mateer has looked in a
- 1:45Speaker 1: long time. And this game should not be this close.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Coming in, I had the same question a lot of
- 1:52Speaker 1: you had all week. Was the offense struggling because of
- 1:55Speaker 1: who it was playing or because of the offense itself?
- 1:58Speaker 1: The giveaways had piled up. Three picks against Kentucky, three
- 2:02Speaker 1: turnovers in one quarter at Georgia. Mississippi State's pass defense
- 2:06Speaker 1: has been one of the worst in the country. So
- 2:09Speaker 1: this was the test. If Mateer couldn't take care of
- 2:12Speaker 1: the ball and move it against this group, I didn't
- 2:15Speaker 1: know what we'd be talking about for the rest of October. Well,
- 2:18Speaker 1: he's 20 of 26 with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Zero.
- 2:24Speaker 1: After the last month, that's the number I care about most.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He isn't forcing it into coverage or trying to win
- 2:30Speaker 1: the game by himself on every snap. He's taking what's there,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and when the big play is there, he's hitting it.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I kept waiting for the bad throw, the one where
- 2:39Speaker 1: you put your hands on your head. Through 54 minutes,
- 2:42Speaker 1: it hasn't come. So my verdict on the first big question? Yes,
- 2:47Speaker 1: he can stop giving it away, and he's doing it
- 2:49Speaker 1: right now. How many of you were holding your breath
- 2:52Speaker 1: every time he dropped back in the first quarter? Because
- 2:55Speaker 1: I was. The moment this game turned came well before
- 2:59Speaker 1: Oklahoma pulled away. The Sooners scored only a field goal
- 3:02Speaker 1: on their first four possessions. It was 3-0 in the
- 3:05Speaker 1: second quarter, and Mississippi State had first and goal at
- 3:08Speaker 1: the Oklahoma 6. I'm watching this thinking, here we go,
- 3:13Speaker 1: same movie. The defense hangs around all day, the offense
- 3:16Speaker 1: can't finish, and the other guy punches it in. Then,
- 3:19Speaker 1: Owen Heineke changed the whole afternoon. Fumble! Oklahoma ball! And
- 3:24Speaker 1: Heineke has been everywhere today. He had a fourth down
- 3:28Speaker 1: sack in the first quarter, too. What came next is
- 3:31Speaker 1: the drive I'll remember from this game. 96 yards in
- 3:35Speaker 1: 14 plays. You're backed up against your own goal line
- 3:38Speaker 1: with a narrow lead, and this offense just went and
- 3:41Speaker 1: took it. It wasn't perfect. They took a sack in
- 3:44Speaker 1: the middle of it and a Mississippi State personal foul
- 3:47Speaker 1: bailed them out of a tough spot. Then they faced
- 3:50Speaker 1: fourth and one and Mateer kept it himself for three yards.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Was that the right call? Absolutely. And I'm not even
- 3:57Speaker 1: close on that one. You're on the road. You've got
- 4:00Speaker 1: a quarterback who's been carrying your offense all year. You
- 4:03Speaker 1: put the ball in his hands and dare them to
- 4:05Speaker 1: stop him. They didn't. The very next play, Mateer hits
- 4:09Speaker 1: Isaiah Cetegna for a 36-yard touchdown in the final minute
- 4:13Speaker 1: before halftime. So a fumble at your own four turned
- 4:16Speaker 1: into a touchdown going the other way 96 yards later,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and that swing decided the first half. If you're an
- 4:24Speaker 1: Oklahoma fan, that's the kind of drive you've been begging
- 4:27Speaker 1: this offense to put together since Michigan. And they weren't done.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Oklahoma gets the ball to open the second half. Torrey Blaylock,
- 4:34Speaker 1: who came into this season as one of the backs
- 4:36Speaker 1: the run game was supposed to be built around, breaks
- 4:39Speaker 1: off a 47-yard run. Two plays later, Mateer finds Rocky
- 4:43Speaker 1: Beers for a 32-yard touchdown. Three plays, 75 yards, 17
- 4:49Speaker 1: to nothing. I said out loud, okay, this is over.
- 4:53Speaker 1: That was the biggest lead of the day. It wasn't over.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Beers fumbled later in the third quarter, and Mississippi State
- 4:59Speaker 1: turned it into its only touchdown. Their running back ripped
- 5:03Speaker 1: off a run, then a backup quarterback came in and
- 5:05Speaker 1: threw the touchdown. Suddenly, it's 17-7, and the stadium is awake.
- 5:11Speaker 1: This is the spot where Oklahoma's season has gone sideways before.
- 5:14Speaker 1: You give one away, they score, and then your offense
- 5:17Speaker 1: goes three and out, and the whole thing tilts. So
- 5:20Speaker 1: what happened? Third and six, backed up at their own 29,
- 5:25Speaker 1: Mateer throws to Cetania for 54 yards, and just like that,
- 5:29Speaker 1: whatever momentum the Bulldogs had built is gone. I need
- 5:33Speaker 1: to talk about Isaiah Cetania because he's the best player
- 5:36Speaker 1: on the field today, and it isn't close. Eight catches,
- 5:39Speaker 1: 164 yards, and a touchdown. What gets me even more
- 5:43Speaker 1: than the yardage is when he's making the plays. He's
- 5:46Speaker 1: got four of Oklahoma's five third-down conversions. Two of them
- 5:50Speaker 1: came on the long touchdown drive. One was that 54-yarder
- 5:54Speaker 1: right after the Bulldogs scored, and the other was a
- 5:57Speaker 1: 48-yard catch on this current possession. Every time this game
- 6:01Speaker 1: started to wobble, it went to Cetania, and he answered.
- 6:05Speaker 1: He's the guy holding this offense together today. And this
- 6:08Speaker 1: is where I start to get frustrated. That 54-yard catch
- 6:11Speaker 1: put Oklahoma at the Mississippi State's 17. The drive stalled,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and they settled for a short Tate Sandell field goal.
- 6:19Speaker 1: That's fine on its own, but it's part of a
- 6:21Speaker 1: pattern today that's driving me up the wall. Sandell has
- 6:25Speaker 1: missed three field goals, two from 45 and one from 41.
- 6:29Speaker 1: On top of that, he made one from 36 that
- 6:33Speaker 1: didn't count because Oklahoma got flagged for illegal formation, which,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I mean, is the most painful way to lose three points.
- 6:40Speaker 1: You did the hard part. The kick was good. And
- 6:43Speaker 1: it comes off the board because somebody lined up wrong.
- 6:46Speaker 1: It gets worse when you look at where those last
- 6:48Speaker 1: two misses came from. Both came right after Mississippi State
- 6:52Speaker 1: failed on fourth down and handed Oklahoma the ball near midfield.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Short field, free chance, and both times they came away
- 7:00Speaker 1: with nothing. This should be a four-score game right now,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and the kicking and the self-inflicted mistakes are the reason
- 7:07Speaker 1: it isn't. This is the same Tate Sandell who won
- 7:10Speaker 1: the Texas game, and I love him for that. But today,
- 7:13Speaker 1: the kicking operation has let Mississippi State hang around. The
- 7:17Speaker 1: penalties haven't helped either. Oklahoma's been flagged nine times. One
- 7:22Speaker 1: personal foul killed a first down early. Another, on the
- 7:25Speaker 1: punt team, handed Mississippi State the short field that led
- 7:28Speaker 1: to that goal line drive. You can't keep doing that
- 7:31Speaker 1: against good teams. Okay, the defense. The third big question
- 7:36Speaker 1: coming in was whether this defense could handle Jeff Lebby's tempo.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Lebby is the former Oklahoma offensive coordinator running one of
- 7:43Speaker 1: the fastest offenses in the country. My answer is that
- 7:46Speaker 1: it's handled it just fine. Mississippi State is one for
- 7:50Speaker 1: ten on third down. One for ten! And they've gone
- 7:54Speaker 1: one for four on fourth. They've had ten real possessions
- 7:58Speaker 1: and only one produced points, and that one started off
- 8:01Speaker 1: an Oklahoma fumble. The sacks set the tone early. Oklahoma
- 8:05Speaker 1: has four, and Adepoju Adepoware got in on a sack
- 8:09Speaker 1: and a half. Two of those sacks came on Mississippi
- 8:12Speaker 1: State's first two possessions, and the Bulldogs never got comfortable
- 8:16Speaker 1: throwing after that. Their quarterbacks are completing short stuff that
- 8:19Speaker 1: goes nowhere. And then there's Bowen. Early in the fourth,
- 8:23Speaker 1: he stuffs a ball carrier for no gain on fourth
- 8:26Speaker 1: and five. Then came the play that made me jump
- 8:29Speaker 1: off the couch. Mississippi State was driving, helped along by
- 8:32Speaker 1: an Oklahoma pass interference and a delay of game. which, again,
- 8:36Speaker 1: more flags. Their quarterback hits what looks like a pass
- 8:39Speaker 1: all the way to the one-yard line. I'm sitting there thinking,
- 8:43Speaker 1: here comes a one-score game. Then the flag comes. Holding.
- 8:48Speaker 1: The ball goes back to the 38, and on the
- 8:50Speaker 1: next throw, Bowen picks it off. That holding call was
- 8:53Speaker 1: a huge break, and Bowen made them pay for it immediately.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I do want to give Mississippi State its credit. Their
- 9:00Speaker 1: running back has been tough all day, with more than
- 9:03Speaker 1: 100 yards, and he got there grinding out real yardage,
- 9:07Speaker 1: not on one long run. Their defense got some stops
- 9:10Speaker 1: early on short third downs, too. This Bulldog team has
- 9:13Speaker 1: been scrappy, and it has made Oklahoma earn this. Now
- 9:17Speaker 1: the reality check, because I don't want anybody getting carried away.
- 9:21Speaker 1: What does this game prove? Mateer can take care of
- 9:24Speaker 1: the ball and dice up a bad pass defense. That matters,
- 9:28Speaker 1: but it doesn't prove this offense is fixed. Mississippi State
- 9:32Speaker 1: came in near the bottom of the country defending the pass,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and the real tests are still ahead. The run game
- 9:38Speaker 1: is still a question, too. Blalock's 47-yard run was massive,
- 9:42Speaker 1: but outside of it, he's barely getting anything on the ground.
- 9:46Speaker 1: The line is still patched together with injuries, and I
- 9:48Speaker 1: don't think one game against this defense answers that. And
- 9:52Speaker 1: the finishing problem I just talked about? That's going to
- 9:54Speaker 1: cost Oklahoma a game against a better opponent if it
- 9:57Speaker 1: doesn't get cleaned up. Oklahoma moved the ball all day today,
- 10:01Speaker 1: and it still has only 20 points to show for it.
- 10:04Speaker 1: From here, the rest of this game is pretty simple.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Oklahoma has a first down at the Mississippi State 24.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Mississippi State needs two touchdowns to take the lead, and
- 10:14Speaker 1: it can't get either one while Oklahoma has the ball.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Run the clock. Don't put it on the ground. And
- 10:20Speaker 1: if it comes down to a field goal, well, let's
- 10:23Speaker 1: just say I'll be watching through my fingers. A touchdown
- 10:26Speaker 1: here basically ends it. A turnover is the only thing
- 10:29Speaker 1: that really reopens it. How are you guys feeling right now?
- 10:33Speaker 1: Because if you've lived through Michigan, Georgia and Kentucky, I'm
- 10:37Speaker 1: guessing a two score lead with six minutes left still
- 10:39Speaker 1: doesn't feel totally safe. I get it. And this one
- 10:43Speaker 1: matters a lot. Oklahoma came into this game 3-3, 1-2
- 10:47Speaker 1: in the SEC. Florida, Ole Miss, and Missouri are still
- 10:51Speaker 1: on the schedule. A game like this, on the road
- 10:54Speaker 1: against a team that had lost two straight, felt close
- 10:57Speaker 1: to a must-have for a bowl trip. Close this one out,
- 11:00Speaker 1: and you've got something real to build on. A quarterback
- 11:03Speaker 1: who isn't turning it over, a receiver who can take
- 11:06Speaker 1: over a game, and a defense that's been elite all year.
- 11:10Speaker 1: If this offense can finish drives, this team is a
- 11:13Speaker 1: different team in November. Finish the job Sooners. If you
- 11:16Speaker 1: want more breakdowns like this all season long, hit subscribe.
