- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Good.
- 0:04Speaker 3: You know we have that iconic symbol. But have you
- 0:07Speaker 3: seen this iconic symbol? I do you know what this is?
- 0:13Speaker 1: I sure do?
- 0:14Speaker 4: Is that a photo?
- 0:16Speaker 1: No, that's that's Walmart. You're never know Walmart?
- 0:22Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 0:23Speaker 4: I have, actually, but.
- 0:24Speaker 1: What are you doing?
- 0:27Speaker 3: Well, it's embarrassing, but we were leaving for tour at
- 0:32Speaker 3: like five a m. It's currently like seven pm here,
- 0:38Speaker 3: so our merch guy Brennan and I had to had
- 0:41Speaker 3: to run and get some things before it was too late.
- 0:43Speaker 3: So unfortunately I am I'll be conducting with an interview
- 0:46Speaker 3: from the Walmart. But as we've seen from the last interview, fun.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Yeah, a little side quest seemed to uh abound.
- 0:58Speaker 4: So yeah, no, it makes it interesting, that's that's for sure.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I'm beautiful.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Yeah what why is it? Zuper readers just frosted flakes
- 1:14Speaker 1: and we're part of their.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I'm not even I'm not even trying to find like
- 1:19Speaker 3: funny stuff around and just like I keep like just
- 1:23Speaker 3: stumbling upon it. I should go to the I should
- 1:26Speaker 3: honestly go to the supermarket war because there's insane stuff.
- 1:30Speaker 4: It's like off brand frosty flap is it frosty flakes?
- 1:33Speaker 1: Frosted Yeah, No, that was just frost. It was just
- 1:36Speaker 1: frosted flakes.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I don't know why they're calling it glazed donut holes.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Like interesting.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Look, Cure is your sixth studio album, and it's clear
- 1:48Speaker 4: that Error has evolved in many ways. What do you
- 1:50Speaker 4: think the most significant shift you've made creatively with this
- 1:53Speaker 4: album compared to your earlier work seats.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Ah fucked?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Sorry you say what's different about it or what's.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Yeah, because you guys have evolved so in so many
- 2:10Speaker 4: ways from your previous albums to Cure, what do you
- 2:14Speaker 4: think is has been the most different?
- 2:18Speaker 1: But I think like with Kiera, we wanted to make
- 2:23Speaker 1: like one of the kind of like make groovier songs
- 2:28Speaker 1: more so than I don't know, it's not it's.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Not as like Shreddy of a record and that that
- 2:34Speaker 3: wasn't really that wasn't for any reason besides, it's just
- 2:39Speaker 3: kind of what we were in the mood for at
- 2:41Speaker 3: the time. Like, I feel like everything we're working on
- 2:42Speaker 3: now is kind of more return to form in a
- 2:45Speaker 3: way or kind of a balance. But with Kira, like
- 2:48Speaker 3: I feel like every time we sat down there, right,
- 2:50Speaker 3: we were just oh, we just like kept getting into
- 2:53Speaker 3: these like kind of groovy or with sugar inspired sort
- 2:57Speaker 3: of flow, and we just kind of stuck to it.
- 3:00Speaker 3: We're just like, well, it's not like, of coursely one
- 3:03Speaker 3: way or the other. If this is kind of what's flown.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Out, is just see what happens.
- 3:07Speaker 3: And the whole record kind of took on this sort
- 3:11Speaker 3: of thematic vibe energy, I guess it. So, so you know,
- 3:17Speaker 3: it wasn't really intended to be different. It just it
- 3:20Speaker 3: turned out that way and.
- 3:21Speaker 1: We like it.
- 3:23Speaker 2: We love it.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, I think the fan reception as well is
- 3:27Speaker 4: pretty awesome, pretty well received. It's been pretty well received.
- 3:30Speaker 4: What is the story behind Cure? Is there any story
- 3:33Speaker 4: behind it? Or is it just something you guys threw
- 3:35Speaker 4: out there?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Uh question?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, there's this movie.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It kind of started.
- 3:47Speaker 3: There's a movie I saw during the time, and I
- 3:48Speaker 3: was like watching and reading a bunch of kind of
- 3:52Speaker 3: nihilistic stufffortunately because I think it broke my brain and
- 3:55Speaker 3: made me like depressed for a minute there.
- 3:57Speaker 1: But I'm doing great now, thanks for asking.
- 3:59Speaker 3: But I uh, but there's this movie called called Cure,
- 4:03Speaker 3: directed by a guy named Kyoshi Krissawa, and I thought
- 4:08Speaker 3: it was just very good and.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I recommend.
- 4:14Speaker 3: But yeah, just some of the themes in that movie.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I feel like we're sort of resonating and all the
- 4:18Speaker 3: other bullshit content that I was consuming. So that sort
- 4:25Speaker 3: of enforced the vibe with the record, like like cure
- 4:27Speaker 3: and crawl backwards out of having apela eris. I mean,
- 4:31Speaker 3: if you like look at those lyrics, it's it's very
- 4:37Speaker 3: very bleak.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Yeah, And how about for you, Joseph, did you get
- 4:43Speaker 4: inspiration from that movie as well? Or was it just
- 4:45Speaker 4: kind of like Joseph Joseph.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Doesn't Joseph Joseph has no time or patience for any
- 4:55Speaker 3: of my art house bullshit.
- 4:59Speaker 5: He had he has sometimes uh you know, broke the
- 5:04Speaker 5: seal with like his like sprinkling his creative references into mind.
- 5:10Speaker 5: But like I'm so to the point, like I like
- 5:12Speaker 5: movies like Fast and Furious and things with Vin Diesel.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, yeah, very inspirational.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Like Aliens and yeah, really big sci fi guy.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Yeah man, yeah that's yeah. Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 3: So like so like when when Lenny got hurt trying
- 5:33Speaker 3: to jump on the truck to steal the goods at
- 5:35Speaker 3: the end of the Fast and Furious original, and then
- 5:38Speaker 3: Dom is like and he likes he's concerned.
- 5:42Speaker 1: That's that? Does that?
- 5:43Speaker 3: Would you say that properly captures what you channeled into
- 5:47Speaker 3: the record. Yeah, when perhaps the scene with Tyres and
- 5:52Speaker 3: Paul Walker, when Paul Walker goes I said forget about it?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Did that?
- 5:57Speaker 1: Did that frustration that Paul Walker felt in.
- 5:59Speaker 3: That moment you want to try Rester forget about the
- 6:01Speaker 3: thing that excludes don't want to talk about. Like just that,
- 6:05Speaker 3: like talking about things you really don't want to talk
- 6:06Speaker 3: about the other just kind of get out of your system.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Yeah, it's more of like when Vin Diesel is in
- 6:12Speaker 5: Pitch Black and he's like fighting massive alien creatures.
- 6:17Speaker 2: That the energy I'm channeling when I'm in the booth.
- 6:20Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Oh so you're like r rated Van Diesel. You're not
- 6:24Speaker 3: PG thirteen Vin Diesel.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's your.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Chronicles of ritting Vian Diesels saying the F word.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Yeah, and like my eyes are all glazed over because
- 6:36Speaker 5: I got some wacky prison surgery to see in the night.
- 6:42Speaker 4: I love it. Well, this kind of leads me into
- 6:45Speaker 4: my next question. Sort of you guys have kind of
- 6:50Speaker 4: you guys have consistently pushed the creative boundaries. How do
- 6:53Speaker 4: you guys avoid falling into the trap of formulaic songwriting,
- 6:57Speaker 4: especially as you get deeper into your career.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Oh, I just I just tell J T J T.
- 7:04Speaker 3: We can't write a song it sounds like halse A,
- 7:07Speaker 3: straw b I Burier Dead. It's too off brand for us.
- 7:09Speaker 3: We gotta we gottab We got to stay within the
- 7:12Speaker 3: within the lanes here.
- 7:15Speaker 2: That's again, this is exactly what he's talking about.
- 7:18Speaker 5: I have one one lane, one preference, and if it
- 7:23Speaker 5: that's what I always wanted to sound like.
- 7:25Speaker 1: That should not be the example that I use because
- 7:27Speaker 1: that song is so sick.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I was like, that record is perfect.
- 7:32Speaker 3: No, that was not a that was not a disc.
- 7:35Speaker 3: But let me think of I was just kidding. What
- 7:41Speaker 3: was the question.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I think it kind of happened.
- 7:42Speaker 5: I think it does kind of happen naturally. I think
- 7:45Speaker 5: we I think we're pretty we're pretty self aware as
- 7:48Speaker 5: a band, you know, and thankfully we we we have
- 7:54Speaker 5: like references to change and what we want to hear
- 7:58Speaker 5: and what we want to play kind of changes conveniently
- 8:01Speaker 5: during the time of when we're creating a new music.
- 8:04Speaker 2: So I feel like it happens kind of naturally.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I mean formula is not so so bad.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I think we just don't want to.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I mean, I like a lot of boring music, like
- 8:21Speaker 3: my favorite bands the National, but.
- 8:25Speaker 1: For us, I don't. I don't.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I think there's a limit to how boring we can get,
- 8:27Speaker 3: and people just check out. That'ssarily what I think people
- 8:31Speaker 3: expect from us.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And by boring, I don't mean like.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Bad because a lot of our most intricate technical songs
- 8:43Speaker 3: could be bad.
- 8:46Speaker 4: But so much going on with your songs, I feel
- 8:50Speaker 4: like you could never be boring with you guys at all.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, but yeah, so it's like, so even if
- 8:57Speaker 3: sometimes you want to be boring, society won't let us because.
- 9:03Speaker 1: The technical metal band or whatever.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so so yes, I think too much formula in
- 9:10Speaker 3: our band would actually just hurt us.
- 9:14Speaker 1: But that said, like here is.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Here is like the closest we've flow into the sun,
- 9:20Speaker 3: I think, with being more accessible in terms of structure
- 9:24Speaker 3: and components and whatnot.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely I have to agree with you there. And
- 9:30Speaker 4: speaking of musical influences, what are you guys? What does
- 9:35Speaker 4: influence you? But also is there any music at the
- 9:37Speaker 4: moment that you're listening to that may be a bit
- 9:39Speaker 4: of a surprise to your fans.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Prize. Probably not. I mean, we all have a pretty
- 9:51Speaker 2: good ear to our ear of.
- 9:54Speaker 5: The ground, the ground when it comes to hing and yeah,
- 10:01Speaker 5: like we we love north Lane and we like we
- 10:04Speaker 5: like Parkway, we like uh we avoid a vision. Yeah,
- 10:09Speaker 5: but we also are all definitely influenced by like lots
- 10:11Speaker 5: of media sources and.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Movies and art. Yeah, I love I love rap. I
- 10:17Speaker 2: think a lot of people Hardy meew that about me.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Though, interesting?
- 10:20Speaker 5: Yeah, ye, Burlne Denzel Curry.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so are you guys.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna I'm in a bit of a like
- 10:32Speaker 1: discovery rut.
- 10:33Speaker 3: But I I recently heard of The Sundays.
- 10:42Speaker 1: That's kind of that's kind of random.
- 10:43Speaker 3: They're like this like nineties band and it just sounds
- 10:46Speaker 3: like the Smiths with like Cranberry's vocals, like Johnny mar
- 10:49Speaker 3: guitar and Cranberry's vocals, and then like, oh cool, I
- 10:54Speaker 3: don't know that's that's maybe a little un suspected, I guess,
- 10:59Speaker 3: unless you, like, I mean in terms of like the
- 11:01Speaker 3: way our band sounds. But it's not really that unsuspected
- 11:05Speaker 3: to j T, because I love the Smiths.
- 11:08Speaker 5: But yes, yeah, awesome band of some of the Shins
- 11:13Speaker 5: and yeah, the Cure indie recently.
- 11:18Speaker 4: I was gonna say, see, I didn't know that you
- 11:20Speaker 4: guys had this album based on a movie called Cure,
- 11:23Speaker 4: and I'm like, maybe it's from the band that you
- 11:25Speaker 4: know all legendary.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 4: It turns out.
- 11:29Speaker 3: It was funny as the name of the record was
- 11:31Speaker 3: coming down to, we're going to call it either Cure
- 11:35Speaker 3: or Wishes, a record by the Cure, and it was
- 11:38Speaker 3: going to be on the Capital. So I was just like,
- 11:40Speaker 3: but that was just kind of a coincidence more than anything.
- 11:43Speaker 3: But it was a happy coincidence that I liked leaning
- 11:46Speaker 3: into because The Cure is great and Robert Smith is great.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Yeah, awesome. You're joined by Silent Planet and Resolve on
- 11:53Speaker 4: this tour. What excites you most about having them on
- 11:55Speaker 4: the bill with you and what's the vibe like when
- 11:57Speaker 4: you all come together to play live, if you've rehearsed together.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Oh okay, I can answer this.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I'm excited to see uh Garrett Russell, the singer of
- 12:06Speaker 3: Selling Planets, Piss, Bottle Stash. I'm excited to see what
- 12:10Speaker 3: kind of creative environments he will he will find to
- 12:13Speaker 3: pee in because.
- 12:14Speaker 2: That's that's not go any more detail.
- 12:24Speaker 1: He posted about it on Twitter.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Photo. It's just like fuel the fire because with that, oh.
- 12:32Speaker 1: No, let's feel it. Garrett will love this. Are you
- 12:34Speaker 1: kidding me? Garrett?
- 12:36Speaker 3: If you're if you're listening to this, which which you're
- 12:38Speaker 3: definitely not because because you have a life and you're
- 12:40Speaker 3: living your life. But if you listen to Scarrett, I'm
- 12:44Speaker 3: looking forward. I'm looking forward to the to the piss
- 12:47Speaker 3: side quest.
- 12:48Speaker 5: I don't know what a bottle brand he'll find in
- 12:51Speaker 5: austral yet, but I'm sure he will.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean we don't we don't know the resolve
- 12:56Speaker 3: guys well yet. But we did play We found out
- 13:00Speaker 3: about them because we played a show with them in
- 13:03Speaker 3: carlsru Germany last summer and they were just.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Uh, they were just good. We watched them and I'd
- 13:11Speaker 1: never heard when I was like, this man's cool.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Like we should try to tour with them at some point,
- 13:16Speaker 3: And now we're doing that, so it'll be cool to
- 13:18Speaker 3: like get to know them a little bit better.
- 13:20Speaker 1: But yeah, it should be. It should be like a
- 13:26Speaker 1: very easygoing group of people.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that'll be wicked and just quickly you've likely
- 13:33Speaker 4: seen some pretty wild tour moments over the years, without
- 13:35Speaker 4: naming any names. What's one of the most memorable or
- 13:38Speaker 4: bizarre moments you've experienced on the road.
- 13:43Speaker 1: What what moment?
- 13:44Speaker 2: What would you say memorable or bizarre? Trying to think
- 13:47Speaker 2: of a bizarre one.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Bizarre.
- 13:49Speaker 3: When we were on tour in Europe was Silent Planet
- 13:52Speaker 3: and Garrett Russell Singer's planet had a fortress of kiss bottles.
- 13:59Speaker 4: I knew you gonna say that somehow, and I was.
- 14:02Speaker 3: And I was like, Garrett, there's a bathroom on this bus.
- 14:06Speaker 3: And he was like, oh, I don't remember what he said,
- 14:09Speaker 3: if he like didn't want to like if someone was
- 14:11Speaker 3: always in there, or like he didn't want to like
- 14:13Speaker 3: be in there when someone else need it.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Again, there some like nice guy stuff. He's a nice guy,
- 14:18Speaker 1: so like, yeah, you.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Know, just like like a fucking fortress, those peepee bottles,
- 14:26Speaker 3: just like all of his block.
- 14:27Speaker 1: It was the crazy thing I've ever seen true.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Is this a true story?
- 14:32Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 14:32Speaker 3: He posted he posted the photo that I took on Twitter,
- 14:37Speaker 3: so he didn't.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Yeah, they posted.
- 14:41Speaker 3: They're talking about he's a he's a he's interesting, he's
- 14:46Speaker 3: an open book, he's a Yeah.
- 14:51Speaker 4: It sounds like.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Them.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Yeah, putting a lot of emphasis on Garrett. But you
- 14:59Speaker 3: know everyone that we're really really close with that whole back.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Oh that's lovely, except for the whole piss thing. I'm
- 15:10Speaker 4: sorry we had small time. It's been wonderful. Flights off
- 15:15Speaker 4: a Walmart. Thank you, guys. I'd wait to see you
- 15:18Speaker 4: down under US. I did, thank you, Sorry, I good,
- 15:25Speaker 4: thank you, Thank you guys. SA
