- 0:00Or back with Dan Hurley, you kind of Seat and Hall on Sunday.
- 0:04Quick note on that one. Coach, Obviously you've got great history with the
- 0:08school and with the opposing coach, Shaheen Holloway, and so there's a little
- 0:14extra juice in that one. I know you might not say that, but
- 0:17I know deep down maybe you're feelings something like that when you take on the
- 0:21pirates, no matter where it is, when I go there, definitely,
- 0:26I think when I get to Jersey in particular, you know Newark place.
- 0:32You know, I lived near, worked in and spent so much time in
- 0:37that great the great city of Newark, and I'm close to Jersey City,
- 0:41I'm in North Jersey. I think you're definitely there's some of that. But
- 0:47at this point, I'm so old and you're talking like thirty years since,
- 0:54you know, and so much good. You know. I sent my oldest
- 0:57son to seat in Hall and he's doing great. I met my wife there,
- 1:00and uh, so many great things have happened to me because of my
- 1:03Seaton all experience that uh, you know, if anything it's it's it's uh,
- 1:08you know, it's a positive thing for me, not one where I
- 1:11want to beat my Alma mater more than I want to beat Marquette or Saint
- 1:18John's. That doesn't exist for me. Yeah, Sheen Holloway their coach now
- 1:23doing an excellent job with them this year. They're in the hunt for an
- 1:26NCAA bid. Uh quick thought on them because the Pirates, you know,
- 1:30we're not that highly thought of when the season began. And Shaheen and his
- 1:34second goal around here, what has he done for that team? Do you
- 1:38think to get them to where they are today? Well, he's got he's
- 1:42had some new pieces that that he's had had to kind of kind of work
- 1:46with, you know, he returned Yo Kadaris is one of the best players
- 1:53and maybe you know one of the most talented players too. And and they're
- 1:57built I think to play you know Big East basketball. They're very physical,
- 2:02physical rebounding team, physical defensive team, physical offensive team. You know,
- 2:07which plays into you know Big East basketball, Big East regular season basketball,
- 2:14you know, and uh, non conference you know they were kind of you're
- 2:19developing some chemistry, some camaraderie and and I've said this to folks a lot.
- 2:23You know that the way games are officiated in non conference and then the
- 2:28n c W A tournament are way different than the way games are refereed in
- 2:30the Big East. So you know, that's probably a reason why they've been
- 2:36better in the Big East, uh than they have in the non conference.
- 2:39All right, this is a little one off the beaten track, though.
- 2:43Do point guards make better coaches than centers or forwards forwards? Yeah, I
- 2:51mean I think, you know, it certainly helps because you're you're, you're
- 2:59you know, you're an extent to the coach. You're you have the ball
- 3:01in your hands, you know a lot of the time in terms of decision
- 3:06making, So going into a decision making position, the matter of decisions you
- 3:09make as a head coach in every aspect of what you do. Yeah,
- 3:15Seton Hall has got some serious people in UH in in the in the NBA
- 3:20right now in college doing some really big big things. Speaking of guys with
- 3:25their uh hands on the ball. For you, Kon Tristan Newton, fourth
- 3:30career double double, you played the position, how hard is that to accomplish?
- 3:37Yeah? Four triple doubles? Man is crazy. And I just saw
- 3:40something today where it's like him in Shack. Oh geez, you know him
- 3:46in Shock or UH are in a very exclusive club uh together there. You
- 3:53know, just tristan size, and you know his feel for the game,
- 3:58his skill level, you know his uh you know just how good he is
- 4:01at basketball. I think you know he's uh, you know, he's got
- 4:06a chance here to uh to put together as good a two year stretch of
- 4:11play and accomplishment as just about anybody here during their time on campus. So
- 4:17he's got to finish here. But I think the NBA is uh certainly higher
- 4:23on him than then, uh than then people probably realize in terms of the
- 4:27opportunity that he'll get there. Coach, when you talked to him originally he
- 4:31was at East Carolina, how did that conversation go? I mean, are
- 4:35you trying to find out about what kind of person he is, what kind
- 4:39of player? And did he turn out to be different than what you thought
- 4:44when you recruited him as a transfer? Yeah, And listen, it messes
- 4:47in recruiting or it doesn't. And we made a connection, and you know,
- 4:51me and me and Kamani, I just really believed in him and believed
- 4:57in the film and what we saw. And uh, you believe in the
- 5:00family and and you believe in interesting after you get to know them all.
- 5:05So you know, I think, uh, you know, our personalities.
- 5:10I think it's taken. Some of it is just you know, getting you
- 5:14know, growing as a coach. Every year, every month, every game,
- 5:16you get better on this job. And I think, you know,
- 5:19a lot of times in my career I've tried to surround myself with, you
- 5:25know, with people more like a Cam or more like an Andrea or an
- 5:29Adama in terms of the fire. And it's also good on a team to
- 5:33have you know, some cool calm collected you know, players as well.
- 5:39And I've learned a lot about that from having coach Tristan and what he's been
- 5:43able to accomplish with a completely different personality than me. Yeah, that's for
- 5:47sure. We're going to talk to him in a couple of minutes. And
- 5:50one note on Cam Spencer this, this is a question that came out of
- 5:53our iHeart Husky Nation mail bag when you talk to him originally, were you
- 5:59looking for spot up shooter, a guy that could add offense and did you
- 6:02have any idea he'd have this well rounded a game when he got involved with
- 6:08Yukon basketball. Yeah, I think we probably predicted his points per game to
- 6:15pretty close to tenth of a point or two, you know, I mean,
- 6:19I think we we might have called it terms of the shooting and the
- 6:26points per game, probably weren't aware of the just the ability to pass it
- 6:32and and create some offense for others. And then you know, we knew,
- 6:39you know, we knew he could steal the ball and make plays as
- 6:41an off the ball defender, you know, at times he you know,
- 6:45we need him to be really strong down to stretch here as as an on
- 6:46ball defender too, you know, for us to really really finish the season
- 6:50the way we want. Is he more of a kindred spirit with you than
- 6:55obviously Newton, who's is way different than you. You know, I just
- 7:00I connect with everybody, and I have an appreciation you do. You end
- 7:08up closer, you know, with some players over the course of of of
- 7:13your time coaching them, but the whole locker rooms like that, I think
- 7:15we're all deeply connected. Some players will leave here, you know, with
- 7:20a closer relationship to to one player than another. Maybe it's locker room proximity,
- 7:26maybe it's personality, but we're we're a very tight knit organization. And
- 7:31you know, my relationship with Tristan when you coach and play at the level
- 7:36of success that we've enjoyed together. You know, that's a serious bond.
- 7:42I'll tell you what, man, you have hit a couple of home runs
- 7:45with those two guys in the transfer portal, and and that's a big part
- 7:47of what you have to do, isn't it every year? Now? Yeah,
- 7:50you do, and you hope that you and with this group, I
- 7:54think I spent a lot of time talking to the younger players today about h
- 8:00staying and working hard. And you know the solution when the portal opens,
- 8:05because you know this time of year, you know, the NBA draft and
- 8:09portal and those distractions are there to try to sink your locker room, to
- 8:15sink your organization. So we've got to fight against that this time of year.
- 8:18All right, coach, we appreciate it. We're gonna talk to Tristan
- 8:22a little bit here after the commercial break and it's on to Seaton Hall,
- 8:26Milwaukee and Providence. We appreciate you, all right, guys, see you,
- 8:31Mike and buying the great Bob Joyce. In the background, that's Dan
- 8:35Hurley back with more of the ucon men's basketball coaches show. In a moment
