Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Tiba K Rambles where a couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas except it is spooky season and
- 0:25we are back for another movie review.
- 0:29For this episode I am joined by Jen and Marissa from the K3
- 0:34YouTube and podcast. How are you guys?
- 0:38Good. We're good.
- 0:39Thanks. It's been a minute since you
- 0:41guys have been on the podcast. The last time you guys were here
- 0:44was for the Healer review, which was a ton of fun, but I thought
- 0:49it would be fun to bring you guys back to do a review of the
- 0:53movie Memoir of a Murderer. So how have you guys been?
- 0:58What have you guys been up to? If you guys want to share with
- 1:01the Tibock audience what you guys maybe have been watching in
- 1:03the past week or so, K dramas, K movies, what have you.
- 1:07Well, it's now mid-september and there was a post lovely runner
- 1:14lull for a lot of people. So I'm currently watching Love
- 1:18Next Door and Queen Wu and I don't know, my slate feels
- 1:23really full right now. Also No Gain, no love, and it's
- 1:28a it's been a pretty enjoyable fall.
- 1:30It's not the obsessions that I was hoping for, but I'm fairly
- 1:35happy right now. Got you.
- 1:37Got you. Yeah, I'm also watching Love
- 1:40Next Door. I think I'm on episode 5.
- 1:42I have like no desire to keep going, but I have just, I
- 1:48prematurely said I was going to do a podcast episode on it.
- 1:51So I am going to finish the show in a timely manner.
- 1:57So that's on my docket too. But.
- 2:01I don't know. I see people dropping it left
- 2:04and right. Yeah, it's yeah.
- 2:07Anyway, Jen, how about you? I am with you Jess.
- 2:10Love next door is got like one more week to give me something
- 2:15to to anchor on or I'm dropping it.
- 2:17But I am loving no gain no love and Cinderella at 2:00 AM.
- 2:22If you haven't tried that little nugget out yet.
- 2:24I'm loving that one. And then I also am loving
- 2:28Blackout. If you are into crime and
- 2:32thrillers. That one's fantastic.
- 2:34It's on Hulu, It just dropped. They dropped the 1st 8 episodes
- 2:37on Hulu. And it's a little bit their
- 2:39release schedules a little wonky on Hulu because they dropped
- 2:42them all at the same time and then nothing since September
- 2:441st. But it does look like the whole
- 2:46series is going to be there. So yeah, but it's it's
- 2:49spectacular. It's so good.
- 2:51I like that. I like that blackout.
- 2:52OK, yeah, I have a handful of dramas that are on my Finish
- 2:572024 list. That's just a personal list that
- 3:01I want to finish these dramas because I've been completely out
- 3:04of the loop for most of the year and the year hasn't been that
- 3:07strong is what I'm hearing and what I'm feeling in the air and
- 3:11the ether. So I'll add that one to the
- 3:14list, including I'll I'll give No Gain No Love a shot as well
- 3:18as Cinderella at 2 AMA shot because those two sound really
- 3:21fun and cute. So yeah, I would also recommend
- 3:24The Frog and if you're tuning into this podcast because you
- 3:28you like a thriller and you like some violence and you like a
- 3:32good looking Korean project product, then I highly recommend
- 3:37The Frog on Netflix. Yes, with Komenshi, I think is
- 3:42in that show. Yeah, I've heard good things
- 3:45about that show too. There's like a handful of shows
- 3:48here and there that like pop up and I'm like, oh, I got to add
- 3:50that to my finished 2024 list, which is not very long,
- 3:54admittedly. So anyway, we are going to just
- 3:59do a a review of Memoir of a Murderer.
- 4:03It is a feature length film. We are not going to be covering
- 4:06AK drama, as I said before. But before we do, if this is
- 4:09your first time listening, thank you.

- 5:00Thank you so much for your support.
- 5:03All right, so I'm back to my roots here.
- 5:05As I said before, back to some movies.
- 5:08Let's get into it. This was a first time watch for
- 5:12me. The IMDb synopsis for this movie
- 5:16reads real quick. A former serial killer with
- 5:19Alzheimer's fights to protect his daughter from her psychotic
- 5:21boyfriend. That's it done.
- 5:23Boom out. That was it, that was it.
- 5:25That was all IMDb gave you. That's hilarious.
- 5:27Literally. It So this movie was released on
- 5:33September 7th, 2017, September 8th in the States.
- 5:37It's an hour and 58 minutes long, basically two hours long.
- 5:41It's directed by Wanchinon who's also directed The Suspect in
- 5:452013 with Kong Yu. 7 Days from O 7.
- 5:49He was a writer for Rampant from 2018.
- 5:52It's a zombie movie with Hyun Bin which I really enjoyed.
- 5:56I don't know if you guys have seen some other stuff from this
- 5:58director but. Rampant.
- 6:00For sure rampant. Yeah, saw rampant.
- 6:03I actually saw a suspect. OK.
- 6:05That was during my Gong Yu Kong Yu phase, so I saw.
- 6:09I watched that and Rampant for sure.
- 6:13This movie was written, it was 2 writers.
- 6:16The first writer is Huang Zhou Yun and when I saw the list of
- 6:20movies that this person has written I was like oh shit.
- 6:24So a screenwriter for Old Boy Masquerade and Rampant.
- 6:30So this makes a lot of sense. So worked with the director.
- 6:33This definitely had an old boy like feel to.
- 6:35It for sure on your first sight. On your first sight, when I saw
- 6:40Old Boy I about fell back like 5 feet.
- 6:42So yeah, I'm assuming you guys have watched Old Boy, the Pak
- 6:47Tanuk 2003 film. I have not, but I read all the
- 6:51synopsises for it, so I know I know what the big reveal.
- 6:55Is God. This felt very old, Boy asked.
- 6:57OK, I'm not sure. I have sat through the movie.
- 7:01It's horrifying, OK? I guess I'm the only one who's
- 7:06been traumatized here. So last year and it's on the
- 7:10Patreon feed. Actually, I went and I did the
- 7:13whole Vengeance trilogy from Pak Chon Luke and I reviewed it
- 7:17solo. I just like decided to dive deep
- 7:21and pop my Pak Chung Cherry, so to speak and like.
- 7:24Did all three movies. You went hard.
- 7:27And when I got to old boy, I was like, have I was I don't know
- 7:33what to what to say. I the experience of watching old
- 7:37boy with traumatized me. Yeah, I there there's I'm still
- 7:41reeling. There's nothing but trauma to
- 7:42say about that. Literally.
- 7:44Yeah, literally. That's it.
- 7:45So that's it. The fact that this writer
- 7:47contributed to my trauma. Right.
- 7:51Says a lot. They wrote Masquerade from 2012
- 7:55which is an excellent excellent. It's a movie with Ebengun.
- 8:02Yeah, that's a good one. That's really good.
- 8:04Really good, and if you've seen the show The Crown Clown, this
- 8:09is the movie. That it's based on.
- 8:10I love the crown clown. Yes.
- 8:13It's the same. It's the same king and clown,
- 8:16yes. Yes.
- 8:18Correct. I love it.
- 8:20So moving on to the other screenwriter, Kimyonga wrote.
- 8:25And then I again fell back 10 feet because when I saw this
- 8:29movie on here, I was like, Oh my God.
- 8:31It's the movie that started off for me.
- 8:34They wrote A Moment to Remember from 2004, which I'm just sorry,
- 8:41like, I need a minute, Chelsea. OK, I thought OK, because I was
- 8:46like, Oh my God, this movie is what started my K drama journey.
- 8:51Wow. I understand that.
- 8:55Yes, it's a classic. Yeah.
- 8:57Yeah. If you want some heartbreak,
- 8:59then definitely watch the 2004 movie A Moment to Remember.
- 9:03It makes a lot of sense because of the memory aspect of that
- 9:07movie that ties in with this movie.
- 9:11Memoir of a murderer. Yeah.
- 9:13So this movie stars Sol Kyungu who plays Byongsu, the main
- 9:20character. His daughter is only played by
- 9:24Sol Hyon who I can't remember what K pop group she's part of.
- 9:31Not AOA. It is AOA.
- 9:33It is AOA. AOA and then Kim Nangil plays
- 9:38Teju the psychotic boyfriend from the IMDb synopsis.
- 9:44And then we have a few and then we have a few other bit players
- 9:47like Odell SU plays Byung Man, the cop best friend E Byung Jun
- 9:52plays the poetry instructor, which it's hard to like
- 9:55visualize these people. But once you see like a picture
- 9:59of them, you're like, Oh my God, I've seen these people in like a
- 10:02million things. It's the Ajishi crew.
- 10:04It's literally the Ajishi crew. And then Kimmei Yun plays young
- 10:08Maria character Kimi Yun from Snowdrop this year.
- 10:13Lovely runner. Runner which blew her up.
- 10:17Everybody's knows her now. So that is our cast.
- 10:20Oh God. That was her.
- 10:22Yeah, that was her. It was like blinking.
- 10:24You'll miss it. Oh God, I didn't recognize her
- 10:26at all. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:28And I've seen her in like 4 dramas.
- 10:30I know as an adult I didn't even recognize her though.
- 10:32You guys haven't mentioned Kilhey Young like she is like
- 10:36she is like the how many to end all how many's like she does
- 10:39everything from nuns to like the worst mom on the planet.
- 10:42It's something in the rain. Literally I so the mom from
- 10:48something in the rain is in this and she plays Maria, the sister.
- 10:53And like, I guess that's all we'll say about that.
- 10:56We're in the non spoiler section right now.
- 10:58But like, yeah, she's in this. When I saw her, I was like a
- 11:02nice nun character. Whoa, that's not heard of that
- 11:06before. Well, you clearly did not watch
- 11:09Midnight in the Midnight in the Hag one.
- 11:12No, at midnight romance in the Hag one.
- 11:14She was delightful. Bless her, OK?
- 11:17She was she was delightful and she then she had scenes with we
- 11:20had June when he was her son and something in the rain and all of
- 11:24us were like, this is so surreal because she's not yelling at
- 11:27him. It was great.
- 11:27Right, exactly, exactly. There's history here.
- 11:32All right, so we are at the end of this general section.
- 11:36What did you guys think of this movie Memoir of a Murderer?
- 11:39I think 1 of you had already seen it before, the other had
- 11:42not. Yeah, so I remember watching
- 11:45this, I think I think it was 2018, like as soon as it came
- 11:48out on his streaming site. And I have memories of watching
- 11:52it on a plane. Like I must have downloaded it
- 11:55somehow. Watching it on a plane going, Is
- 11:57this OK? Because I just kept going and
- 12:00then it got so violent. I'm like, are there children
- 12:03around me? But I, I really enjoyed it.
- 12:07I watched it for Kim Nam Gill and stayed for his his kind of
- 12:13duel with Silkyungyu. And it just I mean, that IMDb
- 12:22synopsis just just barely scratches the surface.
- 12:26Yeah, I know it was like AI generated like could be 50 other
- 12:31films released that year. But it I mean, it begs the
- 12:34question, who knows a serial killer better than another
- 12:37serial killer? And I just thought that was such
- 12:39a fascinating twist on the genre.
- 12:41Yeah, yeah. It was enjoyable and visually of
- 12:45just stunning. I thought that the way the
- 12:49director used visuals and editing techniques and the
- 12:53music, I thought it was amazing. The story itself fell flat, kind
- 12:56of flat for me because I was expecting more of a twist, for
- 13:00lack of a better word, there at the end.
- 13:03And the twist was almost that there was no twist.
- 13:06So, yeah, that was that was my my overall thought that I was, I
- 13:10was a little bit disappointed because I all the visual cues
- 13:14that they gave US-led me down a different path.
- 13:17So yeah, I I agree with you. I think, Well, I agree that I
- 13:21thought that there was going to be a twist because this was my
- 13:25first time watching this movie and again, I'm scarred with Pak
- 13:28Januk dramas. I've scarred with the, you know,
- 13:32punching holes. And so I came into this thinking
- 13:35there's gonna be a twist. It's gonna there's gonna be a
- 13:37gotcha in the. Movie yeah, I was expecting
- 13:40we're not going spoilers so I'll I'll hold that it's a spoiler
- 13:44spoiler section. Yeah, yeah, well, I'll cue us
- 13:46when we're in the spoiler. Section, but sorry, no, no, it's
- 13:49fine. Yeah, I was excited to watch
- 13:53this movie because also I came in blind.
- 13:55Like I didn't even read the IMDb synopsis.
- 13:58I like literally just press play and was like, OK, surprise me,
- 14:02Memoir of a murderer. I was like, OK, they're not
- 14:04going to surprise us by who's the murderer because it's going
- 14:08to be whoever is telling us their life story, their memoir.
- 14:12But I was like, how what? What else?
- 14:14Like what else is the story going to be about?
- 14:17I was surprised that it had. It felt a lot like Memento in
- 14:23that like this person is fighting their mind, their
- 14:27fractured mind, and how there is large quantities of time missing
- 14:35and they are trying to piece together what they've forgotten.
- 14:40And I really liked that aspect of it, that the editing and the
- 14:44way that certain things are shot makes you confused.
- 14:48And that's what I imagine experiencing dementia or
- 14:53Alzheimer's is like. Unfortunately, I have direct
- 14:57experience with dementia and Alzheimer's in my life with
- 15:01family members who have gone through the disease and
- 15:04progressed through it, and you just have to laugh to keep from
- 15:07crying. There's a lot of liberties that
- 15:11they took, I would say with it, but I personally don't feel like
- 15:15it was Alzheimer's or dementia. It was just brain damage.
- 15:20Right. It was just brain damage that
- 15:22progressed throughout the 17 years and, you know, it
- 15:27manifests tested in this really unique way with like his little
- 15:29ticks and his episodes and things like that.
- 15:33It wasn't necessarily, you know, the slow ravaging of time that
- 15:39is typical of the brain shrinkage.
- 15:42Sure. Of dementia, things like that.
- 15:45Right. I mean, the fact that they're
- 15:47letting him drive. Right, like they had.
- 15:49The big I was like. Drive live at home.
- 15:52Yeah. You know, like they have like
- 15:54maybe that's a maybe no. No, he was out here performing
- 15:59his daily functions as if he wasn't severely impaired.
- 16:03He had his business running still with the veterinary
- 16:08business, injecting little cats and animals.
- 16:13I was like, he they're letting him do all this, that he should
- 16:17be done, like this business should be sold by now, like the
- 16:21way that he's at. Yeah.
- 16:23So they took a lot of liberties. And I don't know if it was a
- 16:27it's a cultural thing as well with Korea, I don't know, like
- 16:31is it just a movie or is it a little bit of both?
- 16:36So I think that's. Part of it that your lead, your
- 16:41protagonist is an unreliable narrator exactly and an anti
- 16:46hero. So it's just, I don't, I, I
- 16:50would like to think that most people with Alzheimer's in Korea
- 16:53are taken care of in some way that doesn't involve their
- 16:55teenage daughter taking care of them at home in the countryside
- 17:00with still going out on dates. With a recorder as his only
- 17:04device for remembering. Like those are like the recorder
- 17:10was the tattoos and memento like it's yeah.
- 17:13Right. Yeah.
- 17:14Yeah, it's got its little things.
- 17:17Actually jumping on yes anding your memento.
- 17:19I kept thinking it was, I kept thinking were going to get like
- 17:22a Shutter Island situation. And I was like waiting for the
- 17:26big Shutter Island reveal. And then maybe that's why I was
- 17:29like, oh, all right, yeah, that did not happen.
- 17:33Because. Of all the, all the cutting, all
- 17:36the editing and the way we would go from one location to another
- 17:39location just very quickly. And like there was that one
- 17:42scene where he was talking to his cop buddy and then all of a
- 17:44sudden his cop buddy just got up and his cop car just rolled up
- 17:47and he just got into it and he left like as if he just called
- 17:50an Uber that arrived. It was like stuff like that made
- 17:53me think that there was, it was all going on in his mind.
- 17:56That's all. So that made me give me very
- 17:58much a Shutter Island idea, kind of like what you said, Memento.
- 18:02It just made me think that again, as also, as Marissa said,
- 18:05just not a reliable narrator. Like what are we actually
- 18:08witnessing here? Because everything seems to be
- 18:11there's no real flow to it. It's just kind of jumping all
- 18:13over the place. And so that's, that was what, as
- 18:16I was watching it, I kept waiting for that big reveal.
- 18:19Yeah, I'm not sure if we ever get it and it starts.
- 18:23Right. This isn't much of A spoiler,
- 18:24but the movie starts where how it ends, and then we find out
- 18:28like all the in between bits, like what happens to get us to
- 18:32that part that we saw at the very beginning of the movie.
- 18:36And yeah, I thought that, you know, with his shoes being on,
- 18:40you know, the wrong foot and stuff.
- 18:42I was like, oh, yeah, this is going to be like a shit show.
- 18:44Like some twist is going to happen.
- 18:47And then at one point in the movie, we even in the movie, we
- 18:50see his shoes are placed in the wrong backwards.
- 18:53So I'm like, oh, that's another clue.
- 18:55And I'm like, no, it's not. Wait.
- 18:59Yeah, I but I thought, you know, overall it was a very I mean,
- 19:03there was maybe the movie is slightly too long for what it
- 19:08is. Maybe the movie isn't doing
- 19:12anything crazy with the cinematography.
- 19:14Like this isn't like Roger Deakins here, but that's fine.
- 19:17But I really appreciated how it is setting a tone.
- 19:21It does have like the bamboo forest, which is really nice to
- 19:25look at. It's very picturesque.
- 19:27I feel like there's something too it's.
- 19:28Creepy as hell. And it's creepy as shit.
- 19:34Creepy as hell like did was it just me or did he have it like
- 19:36all gritted off as if he was like I have dead bodies here
- 19:39like like he's being super what is?
- 19:42It just with. It right?
- 19:43I know, it was so creepy. And these small towns are always
- 19:47empty. Right.
- 19:49Like he's dragged that many bodies.
- 19:52I mean, he's a serial killer. There's a there's.
- 19:55He's left a lot in his wake and no ones figured it out.
- 19:59Right. Like they're not like there's
- 20:00not like there's 30 missing people that we can't account
- 20:02for. It's like.
- 20:05I know I'd like the friend. Well, anyway, we'll get into
- 20:09like a little bit more in the spoilers section, but how did
- 20:12you guys feel about the acting performances from everybody?
- 20:15I know that one of you wanted to watch it because of Kim Nam Gil
- 20:18specifically. So how'd you guys feel about
- 20:20them? Yes, Kim Nam Gil, he's such a
- 20:24chameleon. He, I mean, if you look at him
- 20:26in Fiery Priest where he's just this kind of wackadoo, you know,
- 20:32martial arts wielding priest with this weird sense of humor
- 20:37and then you know, some of his melodramas and then you've got
- 20:40this, which is what did IMDb call him Psychotic boyfriend?
- 20:45Psychotic boyfriend. Yeah, yeah, he was.
- 20:48Definitely. He was definitely the definition
- 20:50of that because you would. But that's the where the
- 20:53unreliable narrator comes in because.
- 20:55And I don't think the film went far enough with this.
- 20:57But like, should I believe him? Because he's so charming and
- 21:00he's so handsome and he's so nice to this young woman.
- 21:04So I really enjoyed his performance.
- 21:06So Kyung Gu was, you know, I think the last thing I saw him
- 21:09in recently was Kill Buck Soon. Yeah.
- 21:12On Netflix. I'm like, is this the same
- 21:14actor? He's such a like, lost Ajushi
- 21:18grandpa with, you know, brain damage from I don't know how
- 21:21many car accidents. But he.
- 21:25I thought was very compelling and but I do have to say Saul
- 21:28Young I thought was a weak link who played his daughter was a
- 21:32weak link in this film. OK.
- 21:34All right. Yeah.
- 21:35Jen, do you, do you agree with the assessment on?
- 21:39I absolutely agree with her assessment.
- 21:42I came to it. I would never have watched this
- 21:44if you had not asked us to, or if I was on a huge Kim Nam
- 21:47Gilkek. And it was lovely to see him
- 21:49play kind of outside of his usual repertoire of characters
- 21:54he usually plays. But I feel like there was
- 21:57definitely a theme there that he's kind of got that little.
- 21:59He's got a little bit of a sassy streak that I think in all his
- 22:02characters came through. I on one hand believed 100% that
- 22:05he was a serial killer. And yet in the same in the same
- 22:08vein, also was like, there's no way because again, unreliable
- 22:11narrator, but I thought he did a nice job of threading that
- 22:14needle throughout most of the most of the the movie.
- 22:17And this is my first time seeing so Kungu.
- 22:20So he was new to me. I have nothing really to base it
- 22:23on. But I really believe, like you
- 22:24had said earlier, Jess, that if he did portray, I thought the
- 22:28ravages of brain damage very well.
- 22:31Like I was as confused as he was.
- 22:33And I thought he portrayed how confusing and disorienting that
- 22:37was. I thought you did a really great
- 22:38job with that. And then, yeah, that.
- 22:39I mean, I thought the daughter was, you know, she was, she
- 22:42seemed like in a different show, to be perfectly honest, until
- 22:44the last act. I felt like she was kind of in a
- 22:47like some some like ROM kami slice of life, picturesque, our
- 22:54bluesy kind of of drama. And so, you know, I mean, she
- 23:00never really I mean, again, unreliable narrator, but we
- 23:03never heard her talk about her mom who just suddenly
- 23:05disappeared. We never heard we never really
- 23:08got we didn't really learn much about her.
- 23:10So I don't know if that's part of it where we just didn't get,
- 23:13we just didn't have enough with her except his, our main
- 23:17protagonist's view of her, right?
- 23:19So that's all we got. So maybe that maybe she did what
- 23:22she was supposed to do, but I didn't feel like it was horribly
- 23:25dynamic. Oh, I see it.
- 23:26Didn't Take Me Out, but it I didn't think it was horrible.
- 23:29I see. I can, I can agree with that,
- 23:31that she was very two-dimensional, but that's how
- 23:35he's, I guess viewed her is just that's just his daughter and she
- 23:38comes and goes and she feeds me and then that's it.
- 23:41Like, there's not much there to it.
- 23:45And yeah, it's only until the third act that I'm like, OK,
- 23:48like we could, we're getting a little, you know, stakes here in
- 23:51something. Yeah.
- 23:53From her. Also the the woman in the poetry
- 23:56class, I've seen her in a bunch of traumas.
- 24:00She's she's played a. Shaman, she's played, she's
- 24:03played, you know, she's always a little overdressed.
- 24:08The heels are always a little high, the lipsticks always a
- 24:10little red, redder than everyone else, and.
- 24:14As soon as she's so. Funny and actually that was
- 24:17that's what I was surprised that there was humor in this film.
- 24:20And so you need someone like Kim Nam Gill to to carry that off or
- 24:25someone is probably very experienced.
- 24:27So Kyungu. So to have this character I
- 24:30should just look up her name because.
- 24:32It's Huang Sook Jung. Yeah, so you kind of the moment
- 24:36you see her, you know what's gonna happen to her character.
- 24:39Oh my God, the second she went chasing after the first time,
- 24:42like I'm sorry pumpkin, it was good knowing.
- 24:45Marked for Danielle. On you.
- 24:46Yeah, there's 2 serial killers in this film.
- 24:49You're not getting out alive. You are not making it to the
- 24:52third act, my friend. You were gonna trigger the third
- 24:54act. Thank you very much.
- 24:55Nice to meet you. Oh my God.
- 24:59I guess that leads into because you guys are talking about
- 25:02comedic bits of the movie and comedic characters like this
- 25:06one. Did the movie scare you at all?
- 25:09Did it thrill you at all? Hell yeah.
- 25:11I thought it. I did, yeah.
- 25:13Maybe that's because I was first time I watched it.
- 25:15I was on a plane like. Yeah.
- 25:17Feeling like being 35? 1000 that'll get shit real, real
- 25:22good. I have to say it did not, I
- 25:27mean, again, maybe it's just because, you know, I, it was not
- 25:31one of my first Korean thrillers that I've watched.
- 25:34And I feel like I also did this, unfortunately, with Train to
- 25:37Pusan where everyone was like, Oh my God, the zombies are
- 25:40terrifying. And I'm like, I can't watch
- 25:42that. And then I watched Kingdom and
- 25:44then I watched something else with zombies.
- 25:46And then I'm like, all right, I need to watch Train to Pusan and
- 25:48then I'm. Like, oh, you like backed?
- 25:49Into it. These aren't that scary.
- 25:51What do you mean? It's because I've, you know, so
- 25:53I kind of ruined it for myself because that the speed and the,
- 25:58you know, the dynamic of those zombies at that time is the
- 26:01first time we've kind of seen that.
- 26:02But I had already experienced it through the dramas.
- 26:04And I feel like that's kind of what happened to me here, that I
- 26:08kind of was like, I was always waiting for something to happen.
- 26:11And then it, you know, I, I, so I feel like, yeah.
- 26:14And I'm also watching Blackout right now.
- 26:16And so Blackout is much more like, oh, my God.
- 26:20Oh my God, that happened. Oh my God.
- 26:23Because it's kind. It's actually weirdly kind of
- 26:25similar because he is accused of murdering two of his classmates
- 26:29when he's 19 years old. And it's the reason he and he
- 26:33can't remember because they claim he drank so much he
- 26:35blacked out, hence the title. And so he ends up in jail for 10
- 26:39years, gets out, goes back to his hometown, they all hate him,
- 26:42obviously, and things start happening and he's trying
- 26:45desperately to get his memory back, to learn what happened
- 26:50back then. And so it is, and it might.
- 26:52And again, it might be just like I said, it might be a this movie
- 26:55might have been a casualty of me watching Blackout at the same
- 26:59time. I wonder because I watched this
- 27:01in 2018. I think I started watching K
- 27:04dramas in 2016, so still fairly new and I don't think I'd seen
- 27:08that many thrillers at that. And this is also like pre
- 27:11Parasite, which is the twist of all twists in Korean films.
- 27:15So it's yeah. So I can see like if it's on, if
- 27:19you watch it later, it doesn't have the.
- 27:22Yeah. Oomph that you're waiting.
- 27:24For right, especially I mean like for real parasite, you're
- 27:27like what? That was, yeah.
- 27:30I didn't feel like this movie had that what moment at all?
- 27:34I was just kind of like, oh. Yeah, it was like, it was
- 27:37definitely like a oh. Really.
- 27:42Seriously, that's me. When it finally ended, I went.
- 27:48I wish you guys could see our faces right now because we are
- 27:51just making these crazy faces, as we say, 20 different ways.
- 27:57But yeah, I agree with you guys that I was fully expecting to be
- 28:02thrilled and scared. And I think I only was scared
- 28:06one time. And it was a jump scare that we
- 28:08could talk about in the spoiler section.
- 28:11And then the rest of the movie, I was like, you know how you go
- 28:15through a haunted house and you're like peeking around the
- 28:17corner? You're like, I see the dark
- 28:18corner, I'm expecting it. And then you look with the
- 28:21flashlight and nothing's there. That was like a movie.
- 28:27Wait. I'm fine.
- 28:28I'm good. All right.
- 28:29Oh, Nope, not there either. Oh.
- 28:32Nope, you're like it's just the dark corner, like, you know,
- 28:37yeah, it you it was fine. There's nothing inherently bad
- 28:42about the movie and I do feel like it's maybe I watched it at
- 28:47the wrong time in my K movie journey, where I've watched
- 28:53already a lot of things and I've already watched all the Pak
- 28:56Chung nooks and I've watched the pong junior right the train to
- 29:00Busan I. Mean, coming off of a Pak Chung
- 29:03Wuk marathon, this one was not gonna was not gonna meet.
- 29:06It's not gonna touch. At all.
- 29:08Not even at all. Not even at all.
- 29:11Yeah. It was gonna be.
- 29:13It was gonna be lacking. Yeah.
- 29:14I, but I think, you know, the whole reason for doing this,
- 29:17this this spooky season and for doing movies are obviously this
- 29:21this year is because I didn't have enough time to watch an
- 29:24entire spooky drama. So I thought, you know, let's
- 29:27cover movies. I love movies anyways.
- 29:30And a lot of Korean watchers don't like spooky stuff.
- 29:35They don't like scary movies. They don't like horror genre as
- 29:39a genre. And so I always like to
- 29:42highlight these things and I'm like, you know, let's, you know,
- 29:44get out of our comfort zone. Every so often it is spooky
- 29:46season. This is the perfect time to like
- 29:49try something new. And it's only two hours and
- 29:52we're all three of us are saying you can do it.
- 29:56You can watch memoir of a murderer and you'll be fine.
- 29:58I mean, let's. Let's be honest, it's the length
- 30:01of this whole movie is like a length of like a love love next
- 30:05door episode, for God's sake. So oh.
- 30:08So get me started on the length of episodes in Cage.
- 30:10I don't know. Anyway, I think it's worth
- 30:15trying and I think we're going to close out the non spoiler
- 30:19section which is giving our scores out of fives hold you
- 30:22bottles. So whoever wants to go first
- 30:26score out of five, soldier by 5 being the best, 0 being not so
- 30:30great. You can give half half bottles
- 30:32as well half scores. I'd give it a 3 1/2.
- 30:36Oh my God, So was that. Yeah.
- 30:37Exactly. What I was going to give it, All
- 30:39right, all right. Yeah.
- 30:41All right. I think I will go ahead and give
- 30:44it, I don't know, just to be contrary and fresh, I'll give it
- 30:484. But I am known to be that person
- 30:52that changes my score in letterbox like months later.
- 30:56I'd be like, why did I give that a four?
- 30:58Why did I give that a four and a half?
- 30:59And I'll change it to be lower. I almost never change something
- 31:03to be higher. It's like the recency bias and
- 31:06the high of watching something will wear off and then I'll be
- 31:10like, whoa, what was I thinking there?
- 31:12And then I'll drop a score. So I'm going to go ahead and
- 31:15give my initial 4 Sochu bottles for this and it will likely drop
- 31:20to 3 1/2 later. OK.
- 31:23But I'll give it four. It's solid, It's not perfect,
- 31:27it's very watchable, it's very atmospheric.
- 31:30And if you've never watched Memento or these other movies
- 31:34that we're referencing, then it's probably going to get you
- 31:38right. Like some of these like tricks
- 31:41and editing things are going to get you.
- 31:42So I, I think it's, it's worth it for for a certain audience
- 31:46members. So with that being said, we are
- 31:48going to get into the spoiler section and talk a little bit
- 31:50more in detail about this movie right after this The Greatest
- 31:56Trick. Houston, we have a problem.
- 31:58I am the father. I see dead people.
- 32:01The devil ever pulled. Pay no attention to that man
- 32:04behind the curtain. Was convincing the world you
- 32:07can't handle the. It didn't exist, no.
- 32:10What's in the box? All right, we're on the other
- 32:15side of spoilers. I know we kind of did a few
- 32:17spoilers in the other in the non spoiler section, but we are
- 32:20going to do a little bit of a deep dive here on the memoir of
- 32:24a murderer film. Jen, I hear you have a question
- 32:27for us. I do and I'm this is the this is
- 32:29the big Kahuna spoiler of the whole movie.
- 32:32But can someone explain the ending to me?
- 32:34OK, I had, I was. So I literally had to go to the
- 32:40Googler to be like, someone explained the ending to me
- 32:43because I don't know what just happened at all.
- 32:45Like is is I had spent the whole movie being like, is he actually
- 32:50Kim Nam Gill and this is just him reliving all of his murders?
- 32:53OK, No, because they actually fought and people died.
- 32:56So that's not it. Is Kim Nam Gill actually his
- 32:58son? And then the Locket thing
- 32:59happened and then it was like, is he just trapped in his own
- 33:02memory? Like I yeah, it's the last one.
- 33:04He's. Trapped in his own.
- 33:06In. His own memory, yeah.
- 33:08He, he really ingrained in him the knee.
- 33:12It's almost like Inception, where it's like you're waiting
- 33:15for a train and then that character can't get out of her
- 33:19head. It's waiting for.
- 33:19The world to fall over. Yeah, we're just waiting, right?
- 33:24So Marianne Cotillard's character and Inception, like
- 33:27can't get out of her head that her world isn't real even after
- 33:30she comes to out of the dream. So the same thing is kind of
- 33:33happening to him, that even after the danger is well past
- 33:37and he's now in an assisted living facility or some
- 33:42institutionalized or something, after this whole thing blows
- 33:46over, he's still left with I need to save her from whatever
- 33:52that character's name was, like Teju.
- 33:53Oh yeah, Kim Mintego. Kim Teju, I need to save her
- 33:57from Kim Teju. I have to kill Kim Teju.
- 34:00Hi. That's how I interpreted it.
- 34:03I mean, no, thank you. Okay, that's how I interpreted
- 34:06it, but I was hoping for something a little juicier than
- 34:08that because I was like, I don't know where this.
- 34:11Okay, now The thing is, I don't know how the hell he got out of
- 34:13the facility. Well, that's I don't think he
- 34:15did. I think he was in we're gonna go
- 34:16with that. I think he was in his own mind
- 34:20and the tunnel. I kind of felt like the tunnel
- 34:21was like his brain of some. Sort, yeah.
- 34:25That's kind of how I interpreted originally.
- 34:28And then we got the whole movie and then I was really like
- 34:30boggled by the end of. Those because there was, I don't
- 34:33know how he got, because he also somehow got his hands on
- 34:37medication that he was going to inject himself with a like a
- 34:40lethal injection. And I was like.
- 34:42That's Was that real? How is that?
- 34:44Even happening in a secure facility.
- 34:48I don't think so I think that's his mind and he, you know it,
- 34:53it's what's keeping him alive. This need to go after him 'cause
- 34:57that tunnel, every time you see it in the film represents some
- 35:01sort of fantasy or alternate reality or some, you know, time
- 35:08travel portal the tunnel the. Tunnel.
- 35:11It's the tunnel. It's the tunnel I would have
- 35:14enjoyed a lot. It was time travel.
- 35:17OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:19I'm glad that we talked that over because I thought that was
- 35:21a real tunnel and he was out like off the res and I couldn't
- 35:25wrap my head around that part, like the logistics of him
- 35:28actually making it out. I don't think so.
- 35:31Well, I don't think so either and I but I also thought that
- 35:34bookending the movie with that also a on one hand makes a ton
- 35:39of sense and yet on another hand makes me more not confused but
- 35:44really just solidifies the unreliable narrator of what did
- 35:48we just watch. For two hours, yeah.
- 35:51Yeah, I think it just got a little existential at the end,
- 35:54you know? You know, I like concrete
- 35:57things, Marissa. I know you do.
- 36:02I'm a Virgo. I need it to be concrete like
- 36:05the earth. This.
- 36:08Yeah, this was like, not that this was like that at all.
- 36:11It. Wasn't no Jenny is an
- 36:12explanation. What happening?
- 36:16But see, I think that for me, I enjoy like having the detective
- 36:19that kind of walks you through it and explains it and kind of
- 36:22gives you those guideposts where you're just like, like
- 36:25Inception, like Inception had kind of someone that took us
- 36:28through all the different things.
- 36:30I don't remember who that was. I don't remember all the
- 36:32details, but I found it to be satisfying because it was like,
- 36:34hey, did you notice this? This.
- 36:39This is important, you know? Yeah, I mean.
- 36:42There's always these like exposition, exposition dumps in
- 36:46the movie. And like Leo does one that's one
- 36:48of my favourites in Inception where he just like he says like,
- 36:52how did we get here? Do you remember coming here?
- 36:56And the whole world starts to shake and he's like, this is
- 36:58your first experience and shared dreaming right now.
- 37:00And it's like, that is a crazy moment.
- 37:04And you know, he explains stuff. Oh my God, right after.
- 37:07That that's funny. We're talking Inception and
- 37:09Shutter Island, which is also a Leo Leo movie.
- 37:11Leo, Leo clearly is my guidepost guy for wacky movies.
- 37:18Like, I just needed him to make a cameo and be like, Jen, this
- 37:20is what you should be paying attention to.
- 37:22It's like, thank you, Leo. Thank you.
- 37:24Oh. My God.
- 37:25So I appreciated the fact that he he made-up the sister like
- 37:31the sister was a hallucination. Yeah.
- 37:35I thought that was so cruel. I was like, oh shit, like that
- 37:39was a twist. I felt that was that landed
- 37:42pretty well. It did.
- 37:45It did. I was expecting, I don't know.
- 37:47I think it landed and then I went, oh, well, we can't do that
- 37:50twice. So that's the twist of him not
- 37:52being the OK, all right. Yeah, that was a good twist.
- 37:56And the the whole replaying the whole scene of him putting his
- 38:00daughter in the taxi and then playing the reality, what really
- 38:03happened was like the reality was so much worse.
- 38:08I'm like, he's literally putting her in the car with her
- 38:11psychotic boyfriend. Serial killer.
- 38:13Yes, right. And he thinks he's putting her
- 38:15in a taxi. It's it's just so.
- 38:17Oh my. God, I will say that was
- 38:19probably the best, the best moment in the whole movie for
- 38:21me, because that was that was the kind of shit I love when I
- 38:24watch. He's like, Oh my.
- 38:26No. Yeah, like that.
- 38:29So I wanted more of that. His unraveling there is so like,
- 38:33you're like, Oh my God, he's like fucked it up, didn't he?
- 38:37Because like he it wasn't even that he forgot that she's dating
- 38:41a serial killer. It's that she he actively like,
- 38:45put her in harm's way and shoved her off to the guy that he's
- 38:50trying to keep her away from. Yeah, you know that little
- 38:54recorder probably should have started every day with your
- 38:57sister is not around anymore. That recorder could have been
- 39:02much more handy. Just really good, completely
- 39:05brutal, more handy. I just got off watching.
- 39:08It's OK. That's love.
- 39:09I don't know if you guys have seen that K drama, but there's a
- 39:12similar twist in that in that show.
- 39:16And so when the sister wasn't there, I was like, oh, not
- 39:19again, not again, not twice in one week, twice in one week.
- 39:25I was like. Yeah, there are some tropes that
- 39:29just don't come around that often, and that's the.
- 39:32Right, like the mental illness it's struggling with some sort
- 39:37of psychosis does not happen that often.
- 39:41It's it's kind of rare nowadays. So yeah, man, I got bamboozled
- 39:46twice in one week. That's rough.
- 39:49That's rough. It's rough.
- 39:50It's rough out year, bro. I also, I thought that the the
- 39:55show, I thought that the movie kind of hit its stride when it
- 39:59started to delve into the theme of nature versus nurture for
- 40:04serial killers. Did you guys feel any type of
- 40:06way about that? I did, but I also thought it was
- 40:10completely out of left field that Kim Nam Gill had an entire
- 40:14divot bro his skull. You should have seen me at work
- 40:19today when he started fixing his hair.
- 40:22So the whole thing is he actually starts fixing his hair
- 40:26in the mirror, in the mirror almost like obsessively.
- 40:30And I'm like OK, weird. Then he takes his whole half
- 40:33skull off. His whole head off.
- 40:35Like and I was like, the fuck is going?
- 40:37On like this. Did not.
- 40:40This was not in my bingo card at all.
- 40:42No, like it was like, again, going back to maybe it's all
- 40:47just brain damage. Brain damage.
- 40:48Clearly, yes, clearly when you are missing 1/4 of your cranium,
- 40:55maybe a little bit of maybe a touch of brain damage.
- 40:59But just a touch, just a little touch sprinkling.
- 41:03Just a NAB. Her visa.
- 41:06Shaking her head. She's just like, I can't.
- 41:09The amount of abuse in this in this film, Oh my God.
- 41:15I know. It's like, I mean you.
- 41:16Can't the way that it. Starts like with our lead silk
- 41:20young Gu like, you know, he starts killing people who air
- 41:24quotes deserve it. I'm like I'm like, OK, sure.
- 41:28So we can feel good about him. We'll keep following him because
- 41:31he's really, you know, he's getting rid of people.
- 41:35Dexter. Total noble Dexter type.
- 41:38Yeah. And then it's just it was a lot.
- 41:41He killed a lot of people, Like a lot of people.
- 41:44It started going like from child abusers and like people that
- 41:49beat their dog to death. So like animal abusers down to
- 41:53like this person looked at me wrong and they annoyed me and I
- 41:57was like, oh, okay, that's that's it.
- 42:01That doesn't quite track very well.
- 42:03No, you've you've gone off the rails now.
- 42:07We have now crossed. We have now crossed into just
- 42:09full on cereal. There's no.
- 42:11Yeah, yeah. Right.
- 42:12I did appreciate Kim Nam Gill being like, we're exactly the
- 42:15same. You thought they deserved it
- 42:18because, you know, God chose them for you.
- 42:20Or like that kind of a thing. Like someone else told you they
- 42:23were bad. I just choose them because I
- 42:25want to do it. Yeah, Like, yeah.
- 42:28And I'm like he had. The right idea like they are
- 42:30both equal amounts of fucked up and they chose their victims the
- 42:34way they chose their victims. It's just going to end up in an
- 42:37FBI like handbook anyway. It's not a it's he's trying to
- 42:43be like this holier than thou. I have a, you know, calling and
- 42:48purpose on my life to to kill these people and take them off
- 42:51the planet. And, you know, I feel like every
- 42:54serial killer has to have some sort of God complex.
- 42:57So it it was, it was interesting to see them together.
- 43:03I think that's when the movie was really cooking.
- 43:06I agree. I wish we would have seen more
- 43:08of that and more of their cat and mouse game, Yes, which I
- 43:13think could have been more fun, especially with Kim Nam Gill
- 43:16knowing that at any moment he's just going to black out and like
- 43:19not remember anything. And I thought that moment in the
- 43:22house where he's like, did you just forget?
- 43:24Everything Mendo. Man, yeah, I know, right?
- 43:27Like I thought that was just a great, I thought that was just a
- 43:30great moment. It's funny, I wrote in my notes.
- 43:32I don't think it's this cat and mouse, I think it's alligator
- 43:34and crocodile. Yeah, that's that's much better.
- 43:38I don't know, 'cause but it, but that is where it took off.
- 43:41And I wish I, you know, I'm not a writer.
- 43:44I think there's an alternate ending that doesn't have them,
- 43:48you know, like with Kim Nam Gil laid flat out.
- 43:51I think there's a clever, cleverer ending out there that
- 43:55really kind of would play into the two of them being serial
- 43:59killers and justifying their lives.
- 44:02I I think there could have been something more there.
- 44:05I don't know what it. Is I think I saw on the IMDb
- 44:07trivia section really quick. I skimmed it and it was saying
- 44:11that there are multiple endings like directors.
- 44:14Cuts. Yeah to the movie.
- 44:15Oh yeah. Yeah, I when I went searching
- 44:18for someone to explain the ending to me, I'm I'm in the
- 44:21Googler. One of them was just was just
- 44:24awful. It was like basically the
- 44:26daughter ends up killing herself in a myriad of drug overdoses
- 44:30because she couldn't handle it. And I was like, that is a
- 44:33horrible ending and I'm glad you did not put that in there.
- 44:35And that was the only one I'd read.
- 44:37But I was like, OK, we'll stop there because that's terrible.
- 44:40You're like, we're not, we're not adding to the lore here.
- 44:43We're subtracting from the lore. No, Yeah.
- 44:48So there's like a second one on. When I look at my drama list,
- 44:52there's like a second movie. Really.
- 44:55Is there called Another Memory? And I can't, yeah, I can't tell
- 44:59what it is. Maybe it's the director's cut?
- 45:03That's probably it. Yeah, it looks like this is a
- 45:06second one, like a second part of his memoir, like another
- 45:09memory he had. So it's, yeah, it says this is
- 45:12the director's cut, and it's 10 minutes longer with a different
- 45:15ending. Yeah, 10.
- 45:16Minutes to a different. I wonder if that's Yeah,
- 45:18interesting. I don't know if I necessarily
- 45:22want to explore that, but I mean, it's only 10 minutes.
- 45:25What? I would if it was only the last
- 45:2810 minutes, I would watch the last. 10 minutes, yeah, yeah,
- 45:30exactly. But Speaking of like the third
- 45:33act, I think that the third act with their fight is really good.
- 45:39I liked their hand to hand and then fighting all over the house
- 45:43and him walking in after literally running down Teju in
- 45:50his car like he ran him over. Oh my God, the.
- 45:53Car crash, like took me by surprise.
- 45:56Yeah, yeah. Those were really filmic and
- 46:00wild and beautiful, all of the car crashes.
- 46:03But you had to do that because Kim Mountain Gill's a pretty big
- 46:06guy. I think he could really take him
- 46:09on a regular. Wait, how big is Kim Nangil?
- 46:12Is he like a? 161 or something.
- 46:15Yeah, I think he's told. I thought he was.
- 46:17I thought he was much more we. I think sometimes he's bigger
- 46:20and sometimes he's, you know what I mean?
- 46:23Like they get. OK, so he, I mean he, they had
- 46:25the. Protein shakes sometime.
- 46:27Right little beefy 6 foot. Wow, no, I thought he was like
- 46:30one of our little 585. 8 short king.
- 46:35That's I'm telling you, I thought he was on team 5/8.
- 46:40I didn't realize he was a six furtor.
- 46:42All right. Yeah, well.
- 46:44I guess I should have known that because he he's worked with E
- 46:48honey so many times and she's so tall and they actually are like
- 46:52practically the same like there, there's no big difference there.
- 46:55So I should have known. I do.
- 46:57You're talking about the physicality, the the part where
- 47:01Pyeongsu is like, I got to get strong, I got to limber up.
- 47:05Because if this comes out to my hand to hand thing like strength
- 47:08is, that'll be like the number one thing, the number one
- 47:11deciding factor. I had lost it laughing
- 47:14internally. I was like, yeah, dude, you bet
- 47:16it's gonna come back in 24 hours.
- 47:17You got that? Trying to crush the apple in his
- 47:22hand. He was like the apple.
- 47:23Oh. My God.
- 47:25That was funny. That was.
- 47:27That was. Oh, shut up, that was.
- 47:28Great. Why is that a thing?
- 47:30Korean guys like to like split an apple.
- 47:33Like what? What is that with them?
- 47:35Yeah. I've never, I've never
- 47:36understood that one. I'm always like, all right, you
- 47:39do you. Yeah.
- 47:41You do you, buddy. Right.
- 47:45But I will say going back to what you guys had said earlier,
- 47:47like the comedy, I think the humor of it really did gave it
- 47:53that extra half a bottle of soju for me.
- 47:55Because it it gave it gave it a little bit more humanity, for a
- 47:59lack of a better word. Because I think if without that
- 48:03it would have been, it would have been just this, this
- 48:08cacophony of noise. Because there was no reliable
- 48:10narrator, right? There was no direct.
- 48:13There was no direct through line for us to follow.
- 48:16And without the like bits of comedy, I think I would have
- 48:18been just like, what am I watching?
- 48:20Yeah. Like what is happening right
- 48:22now? It made it.
- 48:23Yeah, yeah. It it, it brought humanity into
- 48:26it. It made it real.
- 48:28And otherwise that whole poetry class thing would have really
- 48:32been out of left field. Right, the poetry class bro,
- 48:37that thing was hilarious. Right.
- 48:38It's absurd. It's absurd that he's like the
- 48:41serial killer sitting in there with this.
- 48:43Like, what do you call it? Like a poetry teacher who takes
- 48:48himself so seriously? What?
- 48:50Do you call it like God? Yeah, he's just.
- 48:51Pompous. Pompous.
- 48:53It was hilarious. Yeah.
- 48:54Yeah. It was good.
- 48:55Stuff I love his voice over too. He's like, I hate this class.
- 48:59She made me come. So it's supposed to be good for
- 49:01Alzheimer's. He's gonna, I'm gonna kill him.
- 49:05Yeah, he's. Just he deserves to die.
- 49:08He's nice. He's.
- 49:08Just like, that's hilarious. I don't really love that.
- 49:12Yeah, yeah. Now I do think, well, I was just
- 49:18expecting him to die at the end of the at the movie, Yeah.
- 49:21Yes, for sure. OK.
- 49:23Someone had to, right? Yeah, yeah, he didn't die.
- 49:26He, like, keeps living. But Teju does die.
- 49:29The psychotic boyfriend does die.
- 49:33Yeah, and The thing is, you want him to die in the moment, but
- 49:36I'm not sure that was really that satisfying looking back on
- 49:40it. Yeah, I agree.
- 49:43I was actually just thinking that as you were saying it,
- 49:45because it was like it doesn't. I mean, we do know he trained
- 49:48hard our our, our Alzheimer's father trained hard to make sure
- 49:53he could, could defeat him in hand to hand combat.
- 49:56But in the actual real, in the real world, I thought he
- 49:59overcame. I think he kind of overtook him
- 50:02way too easily. And it would have been, I think.
- 50:04I think the ending would have made a little bit more sense if
- 50:08somehow Minteju escaped or got out of there, or somehow managed
- 50:14to survive in some way. I mean, you could read the
- 50:18ending as Teju is still around somewhere and did live, yeah.
- 50:23Just in his mind, I mean, and also that also works, just being
- 50:26in his mind. But again, I was, I just, I
- 50:28think, yeah, for me, like that whole there's a third act and
- 50:31there's like final beat that just didn't kind of right.
- 50:35It didn't, it didn't really land for me.
- 50:38I was a little. I was a little.
- 50:39Like what? What did you think of the reveal
- 50:42that his last victim 17 years ago was his philandering wife
- 50:47and the mother of Unni like his daughter, but then his daughter
- 50:51was not his biological child? Yeah, I think that was supposed
- 50:57to feel like a bigger twist than it was.
- 51:01Yeah, I agree. Or I guess he just needed a
- 51:03reason to stop killing, but they didn't really explore that.
- 51:07So I'm just kind of putting that on there.
- 51:08I don't know. I it, it didn't seem that big a
- 51:11thing. It was a force.
- 51:12Retirement because I guess the brain injury was so severe he
- 51:16didn't go to the hospital. But then.
- 51:19Right. He did have some sort of surgery
- 51:22that is documented so that when he went to see the doctor, the
- 51:27doctor was like, oh, it seems like you had a brain surgery due
- 51:31to an accident. Oh, right, yeah.
- 51:33So like this Alzheimer's and dementia that you're
- 51:36experiencing could be as a result of like this brain
- 51:39injury. I think that the scene where he
- 51:42got in the car accident also red herring to me as to what was
- 51:46happening because he like, flew out of that car.
- 51:49Yeah, hit the ground. It instantly popped up and was
- 51:52like, I'm getting back in the car, let's go.
- 51:54And I was like, well, that is weird.
- 51:56Weird. And so I, there was so many like
- 52:00cartoonish moments that seem to be only that, you know, could
- 52:03only happen in someone's brain. It's a little scrambled that
- 52:06that is. I felt like there was a lot of
- 52:08red herrings in that respect for that.
- 52:10You know, to go back to the daughter, I actually think it's
- 52:12a it's a really big deal in Korea, this idea of blood
- 52:15relations. Oh, yeah.
- 52:17So that was a really big point that you, you know, for him to
- 52:20say you're not related to me, you don't carry my blood.
- 52:24So that I think for the Korean audience, that would be a really
- 52:27big deal. She could.
- 52:28She could continue her life. Yeah, unmarred by the stigma of
- 52:32having a blood relation. Her own father be a serial
- 52:36killer, right? But it's her choice to stick
- 52:39with him, you know, to still visit him.
- 52:41Unless that was a fantasy. No, that was real.
- 52:44No, I choose to believe that was real.
- 52:47I don't know Jen's like, I don't know what's.
- 52:50Happening I've it was all garbled at the end.
- 52:53I was like I have no idea like this.
- 52:55I feel like it should have end. You know some movies have like 4
- 52:58endings you're like so when they took him to the to the home and
- 53:01tried to cut his hair and she showed up, I was like is there
- 53:05another ending that is going to have?
- 53:06Like what is his? Is his roommate going to be
- 53:09Minteju? Like what's?
- 53:11Going on, that would have been a way crazier ending.
- 53:15You know, like he all made it all up while he was in, you
- 53:18know, Cheddar Island. What was I you?
- 53:20Really wanted that Cheddar Island ending.
- 53:22I did. I wanted.
- 53:22Like. Cheddar Island.
- 53:25So yeah, it was, it was a lot. It was a lot.
- 53:27I was like a, I felt like there was like a, it is kind of like
- 53:30it just kind of petered the enemy's kind of petered off for
- 53:32me. But going back to what Marie
- 53:33said about about how the scene where he tells her you do not
- 53:36have any of my blood in you and you are not the, you're not the
- 53:39daughter of a serial murderer. I thought that scene was far
- 53:42more impactful and more like emotional than the reveal of the
- 53:47mother and the murder and, and how it all went down 100% in my
- 53:52opinion. I thought that that that was a
- 53:53bigger like, oh, right, yeah, that's right.
- 53:57I agree with that completely. And to be honest, I was like
- 54:00thinking that this was the story that I had made-up like in the
- 54:031st 20 minutes of the movie was that he that's not his
- 54:08biological daughter. He raised the daughter and it
- 54:12was some baby or something that he had acquired through his
- 54:18serial killings, so. Maybe he killed them.
- 54:20Oh my God, Jess, you and I must have been on the same wavelength
- 54:23because I was like, did he kill someone and they found this baby
- 54:26after murdering them and decided to take care of it?
- 54:28Like literally what is like yes I thought the exact same thing.
- 54:33Yeah, perfect. So me and Jen are on the same
- 54:35like morbid wavelength that absolutely.
- 54:38We are on that path, Jess. We are on it.
- 54:42We. Will have Leo DiCaprio pointing
- 54:44out like the the milestones for us, it's our own movie.
- 54:49That was not the case. We were half right.
- 54:51That's not his child. Not at all.
- 54:55Not even a little. Not even a little bit.
- 54:57I I just think that it was all jumbled and garbled and it, I
- 55:02think the movie is up to interpretation in a lot of
- 55:05instances. And if you are the type of movie
- 55:09goer who's like that intrigues you, that thrills you to put the
- 55:14pieces together how you see fit, then great.
- 55:17If you're like a couple of us on this panel that are just like.
- 55:21You can just say my name. Jen OK, OK, you're like Jen and
- 55:26you need some answers. Then this movie might not land
- 55:30as much with you. And both ways are fine.
- 55:33You can see 3 1/2 sold your bottles.
- 55:35It didn't kill Jen. It was fine.
- 55:39I survived. You survived.
- 55:42Did you guys have anything else you wanted to add about our
- 55:46discussion of Memoir of a Murderer?
- 55:48Because I feel like I've come to the end of my mental notes.
- 55:50I didn't take a single note for this movie, by the way, just
- 55:54running on fumes. Just going just going on
- 55:58instinct. Going on instinct.
- 56:00No, no, I think we covered it. I mean, yeah, I think we covered
- 56:03it. I think just to kind of yes.
- 56:05And to what you said as the person who needs a lot of
- 56:07guideposts and these types of dramas and or movies, it is if
- 56:12you are a person who enjoys the open-ended ending kind of thing
- 56:16where you can like, you can sit around and like, like have
- 56:20thousands of what ifs. This is, this is a great movie
- 56:23for you because there are a bajillion what ifs in this
- 56:25movie. So I would just add that.
- 56:28Yeah. Just if you're a Kim Nem Gill
- 56:29fan that you need to watch this, this needs to be part of your of
- 56:35your library. Yeah, he's on hinge when he
- 56:37takes his head off. I mean, that is a true highlight
- 56:41of the movie. It really was.
- 56:43I needed more of that. I was like I literally rewound
- 56:47it and then paused it at certain points because I was like I need
- 56:50to see this concave like I am truly.
- 56:54Shocked. I know the beginning of the
- 56:57film. He's holding a kitten.
- 56:58By the end of it, he's building. He's removing his head.
- 57:03Yeah. And it just was so out of left
- 57:06field. It was so random.
- 57:08It was so random. Like, what?
- 57:11Yeah. Like, why?
- 57:12Yeah. Why do we have to have a reason
- 57:15for him to be psychotic? Like he's psychotic because he
- 57:18got bashed over the head with an iron.
- 57:20With an iron, Yeah. The lesson of the movie is don't
- 57:24abuse your children. Don't abuse nobody, right?
- 57:29I will say this did you guys and did no one else like this is
- 57:33this is again me wanting like some sort of like connection.
- 57:37Didn't as soon as that iron came out when they were fighting in
- 57:40the end, I expected the daughter to pick that iron up and take
- 57:44him out with the iron and the fact that that was just left
- 57:47dangling there. I was like, I felt like that was
- 57:50pretty obvious. It was right.
- 57:51It was right there. Right there, low head, low
- 57:53hanging fruit. I will say I was a little bit
- 57:56more disturbed about the obvious age gap between the daughter who
- 58:01was still in school and this man.
- 58:04Like he's a police officer man with a full time job and he's
- 58:10over here messing with a little. Kitten.
- 58:13He had a kitten. Yeah.
- 58:17I was like, that's the thriller right there.
- 58:19That's right, The Scary Movie. Yeah, right.
- 58:22Fine. Yeah.
- 58:24No, Absolutely, yeah. All right, thank you guys so
- 58:26much for watching this movie and rewatching it.
- 58:29Marissa, I know that those plane ride movies, they'll get you
