- 0:36door, I'm your host. Dustin.
- 0:39And today we're doing something a little bit special.
- 0:42I'm recording, this Georgian tale from my friend, Roberto of
- 0:45the history of Georgia podcast, I know he will be forgiving of
- 0:48my pronunciations and I hope you will be as well in this story.
- 0:52A blind King has to rely on his son in order to return his site
- 0:55to him. But first, the sun needs to
- 0:58solve some riddles. Okay, let's begin.
- 1:06Gulam Bara and swollen Barra. There was, and there was not at
- 1:11all. There was a blind Monarch, all
- 1:14the doctors in the Kingdom had been applied to, but the king
- 1:17could not be cured. At last one, doctor said in a
- 1:22certain C is a fish as red as blood.
- 1:26If this is caught killed and it's blood sprinkled on your
- 1:29eyes, it may do good, the light will come back into your eyes if
- 1:33not there can be no other cure for you.
- 1:36Then the king assembled every fisherman in his realm and
- 1:39commanded go. Wherever it may be or may not be
- 1:42catch. Such a fishes.
- 1:43This and I shall give you a rich reward.
- 1:48Some time passed by an old fisherman caught just such a
- 1:51crimson fish and took it to the king.
- 1:54The king was asleep and they did not dare to wake him.
- 1:57So they put the fish into a basin full of water.
- 2:00Just then his son returned from his lessons.
- 2:03He saw the blood, red fish swimming in the Basin, he took
- 2:06it up in his hands, caressed. It and said, what do you want
- 2:09with the pretty fish in the Basin?
- 2:12They said to him, this is good for your father.
- 2:14It must be killed. It's blood.
- 2:16Sprinkled on his eyes. And he will regain his sight.
- 2:20But isn't it? A sin to kill it as The Prince
- 2:23and he took the fish out to a stream in the meadow and gave it
- 2:26freedom. A little while.
- 2:29After the king of woke his vizier said to him an old
- 2:32fisherman, brought you a blood red fish but your son would just
- 2:36returned from his lessons. Let It Go.
- 2:39The King was very angry and sent his son from the house.
- 2:43Go. Hence, I shall be well when you
- 2:46are no longer Remembered in the Kingdom with my eyes, I cannot
- 2:50look upon you but never again, let me hear your unpleasant
- 2:53voice. The boy grieved Rose and went
- 2:57away. He went and he went and he knew
- 3:00not where he went? On the way he saw stream, he was
- 3:05weary and sat down to rest on the bank.
- 3:08Behold a boy of his own age, came out of the water.
- 3:12He came to the prince greeted him and said, when did you come
- 3:15here? And what troubles, you The
- 3:18prince went to him and told him all that had happened.
- 3:22His new acquaintance said, I'm also discontented with my lot.
- 3:26So, let us become brothers and live together.
- 3:29The prince agreed and they went on their way.
- 3:32They traveled on some distance when they came to a town and
- 3:35they dwelt there. On the next day.
- 3:38Dawned his adopted brother said to the prince stay at home and
- 3:42do not go out of doors. Lest they eat you for such is
- 3:45the custom here. The prince promised and from
- 3:48morning until night. He sat indoors, the other boy
- 3:51was away in the town all day at Twilight.
- 3:54When he came home, he had a handkerchief full of provisions.
- 3:58Several days slip by the prince stayed in all day.
- 4:02And his brother brought food and drink at last.
- 4:04The prince said to himself, this is shameful.
- 4:07My adopted brother goes out and brings him food and drink.
- 4:10Why do I not do something when an idol?
- 4:13Fellow I am, I will go and do something.
- 4:16And so it happened that one day. King's son went into the town,
- 4:20he wandered here and there and in one place saw his brother who
- 4:23was sitting cross-legged on the ground at his feet was stretched
- 4:27a pocket-handkerchief. In his hand, he held a chunga RI
- 4:30a stringed instrument, which he played and he chanted to it with
- 4:34a sweet voice, whoever passed by placed money in the
- 4:37handkerchief, the King's son listened and listened and said
- 4:42No, this must not be this is not my business so he turned and
- 4:46went back. Near there.
- 4:49He saw Tower outside was a wall and on the top or men's heads
- 4:53arranged in rows, some were quite shriveled up.
- 4:56Some had an unpleasant odor of Decay and some had just been
- 5:00placed there. He looked and looked and could
- 5:03not understand what it meant. He asked a man whose Tower is
- 5:08this unwire men's heads arranged in rows in this way.
- 5:12He was told in this Tower, dwells a maiden as beautiful as
- 5:15the sun and he King's son, may ask for her hand in marriage.
- 5:20She asks him a question. If he cannot answer it, his head
- 5:23is cut off, but if he can, he may demand her in marriage.
- 5:27No one yet has been able to answer her question.
- 5:30The prince thought and thought and said to himself, I will go.
- 5:35I will ask this made in a marriage.
- 5:37I will know if it is. My fate.
- 5:39What is to be? Will be?
- 5:40What can she ask me that? I shall not know.
- 5:43So he rose and went. He came to the sun like maiden
- 5:47and asked her in marriage. She answered it is.
- 5:51Well but first I have a question to ask you if you can answer it
- 5:55then I am yours. If not, I shall cut off your
- 5:58head. So be it said, the prince I ask
- 6:03you this who are Ghulam Barra and Salam Barra inquired.
- 6:07The beautiful Maiden, The King's son said to himself.
- 6:11I know indeed that Ghulam bar and seulong Barra are names of
- 6:15flowers. But I never heard in all my life
- 6:17of human beings, thus named he asked for three days, grace and
- 6:21went away. He went home and told his
- 6:26brother what had happened? And said, if you can't help me.
- 6:29Now, in three days, I shall lose my head, his brother reproached
- 6:33him saying, did I not tell you to stay indoors, this is a
- 6:37wicked town. But then he comforted him saying
- 6:41go now by a Penny's worth of aromatic gum and a candle, I
- 6:44have a grandmother, I shall take you to her and she will help
- 6:47you. But at the moment, when my
- 6:50grandmother looks at us, give her the gum in the candle or she
- 6:53will Achoo. He bought the gum in the candle
- 6:57and they set out, the grandmother was standing in her
- 7:00doorway, the prince immediately gave her the gum in the candle.
- 7:04What is it? What is the matter with you
- 7:07inquired? The grandmother of the princes
- 7:08adopted brother. He came forward and told
- 7:12everything in detail then he added.
- 7:15This is my good brother and certainly you should help him
- 7:19very well said the old woman to the prince sit down on my back,
- 7:23the prince seated himself on her back, the old woman flew up high
- 7:27and then in a twinkling of an eye, she flew down Into the
- 7:30Depths. She took him to a town there and
- 7:33went to the entrance of the bizarre.
- 7:36She pointed out a shopkeeper and said, go and engage yourself as
- 7:39an assistant to the shopkeeper, but in the evening, when he
- 7:42leaves business and goes home, tell him that he must take you
- 7:45with him and must not. Leave you in the shop.
- 7:47Where you go with him, you will learn the story of glulam, Barra
- 7:50and solemn Barra, then when you need me whistle, and I shall be
- 7:55there. The prince did exactly as the
- 7:58old woman had instructed him. He went to the butcher as his
- 8:01assistant at Twilight when the butcher spoke of going home,
- 8:04Prince said to him, do not leave me here.
- 8:07I'm a stranger in this land. I'm afraid take me with you, the
- 8:11butcher objected strongly, but the prince begged him until he
- 8:15agreed. The butcher went home and took
- 8:18the prince with him, they came to a wall opened a door went in
- 8:22and closed it inside. That was another wall.
- 8:26They went through that and closed.
- 8:28They pass through nine walls in this way and then they entered a
- 8:31house. The butcher opened a cupboard
- 8:34door took out a woman's head and then an iron whip.
- 8:39He put down the decaying head and struck it.
- 8:42He struck it and struck it until the head was completely gone.
- 8:46When the prince saw this. He was astonished and inquired.
- 8:49Tell me why do you strike this head?
- 8:52That is so mutilated and whose head is this?
- 8:56The butcher answered, I tell this to no one, this is my
- 9:00secret, but if I do tell anyone, he must then lose his head.
- 9:05Still. I wish to know so the prince the
- 9:09butcher Rose took a sword prepared himself and said to the
- 9:12prince, I had a wife who was so lovely that she outshone the
- 9:16sun. Her name was Ghulam Bara.
- 9:19I kept her under these nine lakhs and I took care of her so
- 9:22that not even the wind of Heaven Blue on her.
- 9:25Whatever she asked me, I gave her at once.
- 9:29I loved her to distraction and trusted her and she told me that
- 9:32she loved no one in the world, but me.
- 9:36At that time, I had an assistant was called solemn Bara and my
- 9:39wife loved him and deceive me. Once I found them together and
- 9:44sees them, I locked one in a Cupboard and the other one in
- 9:47another whenever I came home from business, I went to the
- 9:50cupboards and took them out first one, then the other and
- 9:54beat them as hard as I could. I struck so hard that Sue,
- 9:58Lombardo crumbled away yesterday and only gulam bars, head
- 10:01remained and that has just now crumbled away before your eyes.
- 10:06The story ended, he took his sword and said to the prince.
- 10:09Now I'm going to fulfill my threat.
- 10:11So come here now, I shall cut off your head.
- 10:14The prince pleaded with him. Give me a little time.
- 10:18I will go to the door and pray to my God and then do to me even
- 10:21as you wish. The butcher thought it can do no
- 10:25harm to let him go to the door for a short time for.
- 10:27He certainly cannot open the nine doors.
- 10:30Let him pray to his God and have his wish.
- 10:34The prince went to the gate and whistled immediately, the old
- 10:37woman flew down. Took him on her back and flew
- 10:39off the youth went to the town where the beautiful maiden dwelt
- 10:43and told the sunshine. Like one the story of glumly
- 10:45Barra and swollen Barra The maiden was very much surprised
- 10:50when she had her doll, she agreed to marry him after.
- 10:53They were married, she collected all her worldly, possessions,
- 10:56and set out with the prince for his father's Kingdom.
- 10:59When he came to the brook, his adopted brother appeared, before
- 11:02him and said, in your troubles. I befriended you and now when
- 11:06you are happy, shall this friendship cease, whatever you
- 11:10have obtained, has been by my counsel and therefore, you
- 11:13should share it with me. The prince divided everything in
- 11:16half, but his adopted brother was not pleased, it is all very
- 11:20well to share this with me. While you have the beautiful
- 11:23Maiden, The Prince arose and gave up his own share of the
- 11:26goods. His adopted brother would not
- 11:28take it and spoke. Thus if you hold fast to our
- 11:32friendship, you should share with me.
- 11:33This Maiden the most precious of your possessions, as he said
- 11:37this, he sees the maidens hand bound her to a tree, stretch
- 11:40forth, his sword. And as he was about to strike a
- 11:43green stream flowed from the terror-stricken maidens, mouth
- 11:47again, the youth raised his sword, the same thing happened a
- 11:51third time. He prepared to strike with the
- 11:53same result, then he came on Bounder from the tree.
- 11:56We gave her to the prince and said, although this made him was
- 11:59beautiful yet, she was venomous. And sooner, or later would have
- 12:03killed you now, whatever poison was in her is completely gone.
- 12:07So they're not fear her. In the slightest degree go, and
- 12:11God guide you as for these possessions, they are yours.
- 12:16I do not want them. May God give you his peace from
- 12:20his pocket. He took out a handkerchief and
- 12:22gave it to the prince and said, take this handkerchief with you.
- 12:26And when you reach Wipe your father's eyes with it, and he
- 12:29will see, I'm the fish that was in that Basin and you did Set Me
- 12:33Free know, then that kindness of heart is never lost.
- 12:38So saying the princes adopted brother disappeared, the prince
- 12:42remained astonished before he had time to express his
- 12:45gratitude. The young man had suddenly
- 12:47disappeared at last when he had recovered himself, he took his
- 12:51wife and went to his father. He laid the handkerchief on the
- 12:54Kings eyes and his sight came back to him.
- 12:58When he saw his only son and his beautiful daughter-in-law, his
- 13:00Joy was so great that his eyes filled with tears.
- 13:04His son, sat him down and told him all that had happened since
- 13:07he left him. The end.
- 13:41Wow, I was quite surprised by the middle part of the story
- 13:44where the Butcher and the punched heads that was pretty
- 13:46wild. And then also, when they adopted
- 13:49brother gets the poison out of the maiden, I didn't see that
- 13:52coming. It's like hey share everything.
- 13:54Share with it, share your wife like, whoa.
- 13:57Okay, but it was good. Got the poison out, so I look
- 14:01forward to covering a lot more of these tales and learning more
- 14:04about the wonderful history of Georgia.
