Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garret.
- 0:07Speaker 2: All right, well, once again on my line, and how
- 0:10Speaker 2: cool is this? Okay, the Giants draft a Penn State
- 0:13Speaker 2: now alum and whatnot Abdul Carter? And who do I
- 0:18Speaker 2: have on my line but from Penn State, Jay Paternal.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I love how this network works. Jane, thanks for participating
- 0:23Speaker 2: once again.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Today, No problem, glad to be here.
- 0:26Speaker 2: You know, I love to go to the scene of
- 0:28Speaker 2: where it all started. So when Abdul really got into
- 0:32Speaker 2: the program and whatnot? What did you see from him?
- 0:34Speaker 2: And what can Giants fans expect from him?
- 0:37Speaker 3: Here's the thing that's scary about Abdul Carter is he
- 0:41Speaker 3: spent two years at Penn State as a stand up linebacker.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Last year he moved to edge.
- 0:47Speaker 3: There is as good as he is, and this is
- 0:49Speaker 3: in no way to take anything away from him as
- 0:52Speaker 3: a player. There is still tremendous subside for him as
- 0:55Speaker 3: an edge rusher, which there would be for anybody who's
- 0:57Speaker 3: only done something for one year. So as good as
- 1:00Speaker 3: he is and as worthy as he is of being
- 1:03Speaker 3: the number three pick, some would say number two, as
- 1:06Speaker 3: good as anybody in the draft, there is still a
- 1:08Speaker 3: tremendous upside that being said, the fact that he spent
- 1:12Speaker 3: two years as a stand up linebacker means he now
- 1:16Speaker 3: can do a couple of things for the Giants in
- 1:18Speaker 3: their defensive scheme if they want to, which means you
- 1:20Speaker 3: can now take him and have him play some linebacker
- 1:23Speaker 3: and drop into coverage. Not that that's what you want
- 1:26Speaker 3: to do, but certainly it gives you the ability to
- 1:28Speaker 3: get him and blitz him from a linebacker spot where
- 1:31Speaker 3: now a running back might have to block him rather
- 1:34Speaker 3: than your best tackle getting matched up on him.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So there's true.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I mean this, this this could be really be a
- 1:42Speaker 3: great pick for the Giants in terms of the versatility
- 1:44Speaker 3: he brings and on.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Top of the type of football player.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Is now talk about him as a person though, right,
- 1:51Speaker 2: because we always like to bring character to these teams.
- 1:53Speaker 2: What kind of character can in the locker room expect
- 1:55Speaker 2: from Abdua Carter one.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I think he's gonna be a guy that comes in
- 1:58Speaker 1: and is intense.
- 1:59Speaker 3: He's going to be a guy that works his butt off,
- 2:01Speaker 3: which is what everybody Penn State says.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I didn't spend a lot of time around him.
- 2:05Speaker 3: You know there are some, uh, there were some off
- 2:08Speaker 3: the field things that he got involved with. But you
- 2:10Speaker 3: know the question when when you're the Giants and you
- 2:12Speaker 3: evaluate off the field or any team, to say, are
- 2:15Speaker 3: we looking at a bad kid or we looking.
- 2:17Speaker 1: At a kid who made a good kid who made
- 2:18Speaker 1: a mistake.
- 2:19Speaker 3: And I know what I was like between the age
- 2:21Speaker 3: of eighteen and twenty two, and I was, you know,
- 2:24Speaker 3: pretty good kid who did some stupid things. So what
- 2:27Speaker 3: what that leaned up? You know, whether they they that
- 2:30Speaker 3: manifests itself. I think I think is the does a
- 2:33Speaker 3: guy learned from any mistakes he's made, and he'll be
- 2:35Speaker 3: a real asset to the Giants.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You are on the board of pensative, I'm not mistaken.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So whenever these guys get drafted, whether it's a Tyler Warren,
- 2:41Speaker 2: I'll do a Carter Hell Sakuon Barkley a few years ago. Right,
- 2:44Speaker 2: doesn't that make the board proud?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Or what? Yeah?
- 2:47Speaker 3: I mean, are you, as a Giants fan allowed to
- 2:49Speaker 3: say the word Sae Kwon Barkley?
- 2:51Speaker 2: You know what? I do it anyway because I believe
- 2:53Speaker 2: in respect, the respect the guy's talent.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Look, you didn't make the decision, you know, and doesn't
- 2:59Speaker 3: mean you don't like him and he didn't make the
- 3:00Speaker 3: decision to go. But yeah, I mean there's certainly an
- 3:04Speaker 3: element of, you know, ultimately that's what you want.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I mean, the first.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Thing I care about is how are we doing on
- 3:09Speaker 3: the field at Penn State, and then their pro career
- 3:12Speaker 3: is after that, which was really the same way we
- 3:14Speaker 3: took that approach to my coach here for seventeen years.
- 3:17Speaker 3: You know, we would go into a kid's home and say,
- 3:19Speaker 3: if you want to, we're interested in guys that want
- 3:22Speaker 3: to get a big time education, that want to be
- 3:24Speaker 3: part of the team that competes for a national championship
- 3:27Speaker 3: in a Big Ten championship and then goes to the NFL.
- 3:30Speaker 1: So that was kind of what I'm seeing.
- 3:31Speaker 2: James Fengle go into different homes of these guys, right,
- 3:33Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think if you try to really build
- 3:37Speaker 3: a football program that's going to be sustainable and successful
- 3:40Speaker 3: on the field and to college level, that's what you
- 3:43Speaker 3: have to have.
- 3:44Speaker 1: You have to have guys.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Interested in doing things in the classroom, doing things for
- 3:47Speaker 3: the teammates, and a lot of that.
- 3:50Speaker 1: The pro career will kind of develop itself out of that.
- 3:53Speaker 2: All right, I got to ask this because obviously you
- 3:55Speaker 2: were around your father Joe Paterno for forever. How proud
- 3:58Speaker 2: was he when he got a kid drafted to the NFL.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Was he like beaming or what?
- 4:02Speaker 3: No, he was like, good for them, and hey, we
- 4:04Speaker 3: got games next year to worry about, you know, I mean,
- 4:07Speaker 3: you know he had I just saw stad. He had
- 4:09Speaker 3: two hundred and fifty one guys drafted throughout his career,
- 4:12Speaker 3: which is more than any other coach in the history
- 4:14Speaker 3: of the game. And he never once went to the
- 4:17Speaker 3: draft because he'd say, hey, it's their day, not mine.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I'm really happy for him. Whatever.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And you know a lot of these players would call
- 4:23Speaker 3: up and their parents would called we'd have got himed
- 4:25Speaker 3: Levi Brown who was the first round pick of the Cardinals,
- 4:27Speaker 3: in the top top ten pick, and he came to
- 4:31Speaker 3: pennch day as a defensive lineman and we moved them.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Joe moved them, I think before his sophomore year, and
- 4:39Speaker 3: he did not want to move. And the dad was mad.
- 4:42Speaker 3: The kid was mad, I want to be a defensive tackle.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And just said, look, you can be an ordinary defensive tackle,
- 4:49Speaker 3: or you have the chance to be a top ten
- 4:50Speaker 3: pick as an offensive tackle.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And he was not happy about it.
- 4:56Speaker 3: He was, you know, sulked for a little while, and
- 4:59Speaker 3: then certainly draft day, you know, two years later, as
- 5:02Speaker 3: all American, he gets drafted in the top ten of
- 5:04Speaker 3: the draft and his dad called Joe, and the kid
- 5:07Speaker 3: called Joe and said, you know, you were right, and well,
- 5:09Speaker 3: I've been doing this a little while, so I think
- 5:11Speaker 3: I know what I'm look at that. So, but those
- 5:13Speaker 3: are the kind of stories that you love. I mean,
- 5:15Speaker 3: there were two or three teammates of mine that came
- 5:17Speaker 3: and recruited different positions and moved and weren't happy and
- 5:20Speaker 3: then ended up having ten year careers as pro So
- 5:24Speaker 3: I mean, I think my dad really enjoyed watching that
- 5:26Speaker 3: process absolutely.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Speaking of both sides of the ball, I got to
- 5:29Speaker 2: get to this other draft pick that happened to be
- 5:31Speaker 2: second in Travis Hunter. Now, do you think the NFL
- 5:34Speaker 2: is gonna let him or do you think the Brown's
- 5:37Speaker 2: gonna I'm sorry, the Jaguar's gonna let him? Play both
- 5:39Speaker 2: sides of the ball here. What's gonna happen?
- 5:42Speaker 3: I would think at some point because he's valued on
- 5:44Speaker 3: both sides of the ball. I mean, Deon Sanders did it,
- 5:46Speaker 3: you know, was predominantly a corner who would go play
- 5:49Speaker 3: do some offensive things, so it can be done. The
- 5:52Speaker 3: president is there, The question is what do you want
- 5:54Speaker 3: him to major in? So to speak, it's really like
- 5:56Speaker 3: a major like, I don't think they're gonna have him
- 5:58Speaker 3: play fifty plays on offensive, but he plays defense like
- 6:01Speaker 3: he did in college. I think the game is just
- 6:03Speaker 3: too physical and difficult. That may be wrong, and if
- 6:05Speaker 3: I'm wrong, good for him.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:10Speaker 3: I mean and Otani is you know, it's that's proven
- 6:13Speaker 3: to have a lot of wear and tear on him.
- 6:14Speaker 3: So but that being said, I think you know what
- 6:18Speaker 3: side of the ball he majors in. I think will
- 6:20Speaker 3: be I think that team is Carolina. Will you know,
- 6:24Speaker 3: if they wanted to be a shutdown corner, they'll let
- 6:26Speaker 3: him develop into that and do some things offensively. And
- 6:29Speaker 3: we coached, you know, over my career, we had some
- 6:31Speaker 3: guys who played both sides of the ball or multiple positions,
- 6:35Speaker 3: and they majored in something, and if they were predominantly
- 6:39Speaker 3: a dB, like Justin King got drafted at the third
- 6:42Speaker 3: or fourth round coming out back in the mid two thousands.
- 6:45Speaker 3: He was a defensive back who came over and helped
- 6:47Speaker 3: us on offense because he had those kind of skills.
- 6:49Speaker 4: So that's probably what they'll do now when the Giants
- 6:53Speaker 4: or colts in this case with Tyler Warren, say we
- 6:56Speaker 4: want to interview Abdul or we want to interview Tyler Warren,
- 7:00Speaker 4: does the board, does Penn State Athletics have any you know,
- 7:03Speaker 4: jurisdiction over that or they arrange it or are they
- 7:05Speaker 4: on their own with that.
- 7:06Speaker 3: That's a lot of those happen on. A lot of
- 7:09Speaker 3: those will happen on at the combine. So when the
- 7:13Speaker 3: guys go to combine, they'll go. One of the things
- 7:15Speaker 3: they did is they go through a whole series of
- 7:19Speaker 3: interviews with every team and NFL guys I know, and
- 7:23Speaker 3: I know a lot of guys in.
- 7:23Speaker 1: The league, and they've explained that process.
- 7:25Speaker 3: So if you are a guy that is going to
- 7:28Speaker 3: be drafted, they're gonna sit down with you and they're
- 7:31Speaker 3: gonna ask you questions.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And almost every every team interviews those.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Tis like a job interview, right basically.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's just like we want to get
- 7:39Speaker 3: to know what kind of guy you are, We want
- 7:40Speaker 3: to know what kind of interest you have, and something
- 7:43Speaker 3: we would bring in.
- 7:44Speaker 1: When I was coaching quarterbacks in Penn State.
- 7:45Speaker 3: When kids would come in for their visits, we'd sit
- 7:48Speaker 3: down and do kind of a film meeting with them
- 7:50Speaker 3: and get a feel for, you know, what is what's
- 7:53Speaker 3: their interest or football like you you know, we sit
- 7:56Speaker 3: down with them and we walked away from some guys
- 7:59Speaker 3: that were disinterest, that didn't seem to have that intellectual
- 8:02Speaker 3: curiosity because you.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Got to have that to play, especially at the NFL level.
- 8:07Speaker 2: So so you were a coach for seventeen years. In
- 8:10Speaker 2: those seventeen years where the interviews is Prebaalent, I feel
- 8:12Speaker 2: like the Chador situation really highlighted how important the interviews are.
- 8:15Speaker 2: It sounds like to me, so we're interviews a thing
- 8:18Speaker 2: seventeen years, you know, in the seventeen years.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, they've been doing that a long time and the
- 8:23Speaker 3: NFL has been doing that. The NFL used to do
- 8:25Speaker 3: a lot of background checks on guys. Probably still do
- 8:28Speaker 3: because when you're starting to commit that kind of money
- 8:30Speaker 3: to people, you want to know that you know that
- 8:33Speaker 3: there's no issues there, or if there are issues, you
- 8:36Speaker 3: want to be aware of them. But I think it's
- 8:39Speaker 3: one of those things that you know, it's not new.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I think when there's a high profile guy that is
- 8:46Speaker 3: sliding down draft boards. I think that's when teams start
- 8:49Speaker 3: to leak out maybe some negative things, or if a
- 8:52Speaker 3: guy's coming up the draft board, people leak out like
- 8:55Speaker 3: this guy really did well in these elements because you know,
- 8:59Speaker 3: the fans are all paying attention. I mean, you know,
- 9:02Speaker 3: he went back sixteen, seventeen, twenty years ago. You didn't
- 9:05Speaker 3: have you know, announcements of mel Kiper's mock draft two
- 9:09Speaker 3: point zero or three AR.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Or Todd mcshay's mock draft is now out. You know.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Well, look, no one had Eli being traded to the Giants.
- 9:16Speaker 2: That just happened naturally, you know. Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I mean there's so much attention now on the draft
- 9:21Speaker 3: that GM's have to you know, the fans are weighing in,
- 9:25Speaker 3: and I think the teams want the fans to kind
- 9:27Speaker 3: of know, Hey, here's why we shot away from this guy.
- 9:29Speaker 1: That's why we jumped on this.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Guy absolutely, all right, Jay, Now we get to Tyler
- 9:33Speaker 2: Warren because we talked about him in the playoff series
- 9:37Speaker 2: just a few months ago. Actually no, not, so you're
- 9:40Speaker 2: not surprised he draft he got drafted.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Are you proud of him?
- 9:43Speaker 2: I feel like you were you were really touting him
- 9:44Speaker 2: last time we were on here.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Oh, I think, say, you gotta love everything about the guy.
- 9:48Speaker 3: The way he plays the game, all the positions he plays,
- 9:52Speaker 3: his intensity, his toughness. I mean, he's just a tough
- 9:56Speaker 3: football player that can do a number of things. He
- 9:58Speaker 3: could be a fullback, he can be a tight end,
- 10:00Speaker 3: he can do he can be an emergency quarterback. Now
- 10:04Speaker 3: you wouldn't want to play thirty forty plays in his
- 10:06Speaker 3: an emergency quarterback in the NFL ppiccause that's pretty high
- 10:09Speaker 3: level stuff. But I mean he can do a lot
- 10:11Speaker 3: of different things for you, and he becomes a problem
- 10:13Speaker 3: for defenses where now you have to figure out where
- 10:16Speaker 3: you know it's where's Walda?
- 10:17Speaker 1: You know, we got to find out what number he is.
- 10:20Speaker 3: When we used to practice against guys like that when
- 10:22Speaker 3: we were coaching on our scout team, we would put
- 10:27Speaker 3: like a green jersey on a guy like that so
- 10:30Speaker 3: they would know. You know, when when Charles Woodson was
- 10:33Speaker 3: at Michigan and playing different positions, you know that you
- 10:35Speaker 3: would you would do things like that. So he's a
- 10:37Speaker 3: guy that creates those kinds of problems for you.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Now, do you get to know when scouts are in
- 10:42Speaker 2: the building for these guys, or they just show up
- 10:44Speaker 2: randomly or how does that work.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm not sure what their policies.
- 10:47Speaker 3: You know, when I was still coaching, there would be
- 10:49Speaker 3: days they would command or you would know who was
- 10:52Speaker 3: in the building.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 10:54Speaker 3: And we used to limit it to maybe two weeks
- 10:56Speaker 3: in the fall because we don't want a lot of
- 10:57Speaker 3: distractions to practice. But every school has a from policy
- 11:00Speaker 3: on that, and I'm not sure exactly what Penn State's
- 11:03Speaker 3: policy is right now as a related scouts, But guys
- 11:06Speaker 3: know when they're coming in.
- 11:07Speaker 1: They you know, they'll let you.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Know how the Cardinals want to come in on November
- 11:12Speaker 3: tenth or something like that, So they'll let you know
- 11:14Speaker 3: when they're coming in.
- 11:16Speaker 2: All right, And Jack, I gotta ask you this, the
- 11:20Speaker 2: Riley Leonard Tyler Warren connection. Can we see that right
- 11:23Speaker 2: off the bat? Or will they give Riley a little
- 11:25Speaker 2: time on the bench. What do you think is gonna
- 11:27Speaker 2: happen there?
- 11:28Speaker 3: I think, I think, well, I think that'll take a
- 11:30Speaker 3: little time. But I think right, you know, that's the Colts.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You know, it seemed like Gander quarterback last year. Now
- 11:37Speaker 3: I'm drawing a blank on his name kid from Florida.
- 11:40Speaker 3: But you know, we'll see what happens now.
- 11:43Speaker 2: For you, I mean, you're watching all of this and
- 11:46Speaker 2: I believe you're kind of removed from the football program,
- 11:48Speaker 2: but you're still involved with Penn State. So talk about
- 11:51Speaker 2: that involvement. I don't highlight it last time, but got
- 11:53Speaker 2: a little more in depth. Does the involvement almost change
- 11:57Speaker 2: with every athletic season? Do you have any involvement with
- 11:59Speaker 2: the baseball for you know, all those different sports that
- 12:01Speaker 2: Penn State has.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I'm just mostly a fan of everything that's going on.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Like I go to a lot of events. I go
- 12:07Speaker 3: to lacrosse games, go to women's volleyball games. I mean
- 12:10Speaker 3: I went to a bunch of them because they won
- 12:11Speaker 3: on a national championship run. It was just awesome to watch.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I just try and stay out of the way and
- 12:17Speaker 3: be a fan.
- 12:17Speaker 2: And that was happening at the same time as football
- 12:19Speaker 2: was going on too.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Absolutely, So, if there's any I always tell it good
- 12:23Speaker 3: as anything you guys, anything I can do to help you,
- 12:25Speaker 3: let me know.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Otherwise, just leave me some tickets from time to time.
- 12:29Speaker 2: There you go, bring general managers to.
- 12:32Speaker 1: The best ones.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Let me tell you about the dimension of the GMS
- 12:35Speaker 2: just a little bit, and I feel like colleges might
- 12:37Speaker 2: need to have the GMS the way we're going. I mean,
- 12:40Speaker 2: I want to highlight an ECO and Tennessee. That situation
- 12:43Speaker 2: a kid dealing with contract negotiations doesn't make sense to me.
- 12:47Speaker 2: They're like twenty years old. And if you were still coaching, right,
- 12:51Speaker 2: would you say, Okay, I don't want this kid on
- 12:52Speaker 2: my team when he's thinking about the money. Is that
- 12:54Speaker 2: what your first reaction would be here?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Well, I think at the end of the day, you
- 12:58Speaker 3: say to a kid, look, you agree to this deal.
- 13:01Speaker 3: We agree to it. You agree to it. If you
- 13:03Speaker 3: don't honor it, you're not bigger than the program. I
- 13:05Speaker 3: probably what done with Tennessee did and said, you know,
- 13:07Speaker 3: go ahead and go I mean, I can't have this
- 13:10Speaker 3: discussion every couple.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Of weeks that you're just not happy with what you got.
- 13:14Speaker 3: So and I think that you're going to see schools
- 13:19Speaker 3: going to a GM model, especially as we get to
- 13:22Speaker 3: revenue sharing, because the revenue sharing will be capped. So now,
- 13:26Speaker 3: how much money do we allocate to the quarterback position?
- 13:29Speaker 3: How much money do you allocate to offensive line? And
- 13:32Speaker 3: I think you're going to see a lot of teams
- 13:34Speaker 3: try and set up essentially what it's an NFL type
- 13:38Speaker 3: model where they'll come in and say, this is the
- 13:43Speaker 3: this is the portion of your budget that you can
- 13:46Speaker 3: spend on this position. And it's similar to when you
- 13:49Speaker 3: had eighty five scholarship limits. You would want to have
- 13:52Speaker 3: x number of guys playing this position, x number of
- 13:54Speaker 3: guys playing opposite.
- 13:55Speaker 1: So it's similar, but it's more difficult because now you're
- 13:57Speaker 1: talking about money and and.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Can you highlight this in your book blitzed the all
- 14:03Speaker 2: out pressure of college football's new era? Is that right?
- 14:07Speaker 2: Pardon you highlight that in your new book as well?
- 14:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 14:10Speaker 3: You go through all the problems that the coach is
- 14:12Speaker 3: dealing with kids coming and saying I want this amount
- 14:15Speaker 3: of money, recruits saying Texas offered me this amount of money.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Can you give me that? And now the coach is going,
- 14:21Speaker 1: you know, what the heck's going on?
- 14:22Speaker 3: And now you know it's even more so, And it
- 14:25Speaker 3: doesn't matter what sport you're talking about college sports. Now
- 14:27Speaker 3: there are agents involved that are trying to negotiate these deals.
- 14:31Speaker 2: All right, Now, I know that we didn't have y'all
- 14:33Speaker 2: about this other book, but I'm looking you also wrote
- 14:35Speaker 2: about your dad, so Penn State fans my one ins
- 14:38Speaker 2: I look at the life of Joe paternal tell us
- 14:40Speaker 2: about the book A Paternal Legacy and during Lessons from
- 14:43Speaker 2: the Life and Death of my father.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Well that's a completely nonfiction book. So that's that's really
- 14:48Speaker 3: kind of a memoir and it takes you you know,
- 14:51Speaker 3: I was one of the few people I was the
- 14:53Speaker 3: only guy really to know to have been his son,
- 14:55Speaker 3: played for him and then coach for him. So I've
- 14:58Speaker 3: seen this his life from all those different angles and
- 15:01Speaker 3: see him as a grandfather, and see him, you know,
- 15:04Speaker 3: in terms of his relationship with my mom and other
- 15:06Speaker 3: people around him. So it really takes you into kind
- 15:09Speaker 3: of the core values of what he was about, takes
- 15:11Speaker 3: you into a lot of stories inside his life and
- 15:15Speaker 3: look at through the lens of the full scope of
- 15:18Speaker 3: his life and the impact he had on people.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Now, James Franklin, I feel like he's just such a
- 15:24Speaker 2: done a great job as Penn Say head coach. But
- 15:28Speaker 2: when he was first hired, is there a review processes
- 15:31Speaker 2: like do you guys look for that not an ex
- 15:33Speaker 2: paternal but someone who can be continuing that legacy on
- 15:36Speaker 2: the sideline.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Well, I think the most important thing is you want
- 15:39Speaker 3: someone that is committed to the academic side, because the
- 15:44Speaker 3: end of the day, our first job is to educate people.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Okay, so if you're committed, if they're committed to that.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Now, I was not on the board when James got hired,
- 15:53Speaker 3: so that was all you know before I was on
- 15:55Speaker 3: the board. But certainly with any any coach that we hired,
- 15:58Speaker 3: Penn say, that's job number one is I'm going to
- 16:01Speaker 3: come in and make better people and get these student
- 16:04Speaker 3: athletes we bring in, no matter what sport it is,
- 16:06Speaker 3: educate them, make them better people when they leave, then
- 16:09Speaker 3: when they got here, that's number one. Then obviously you
- 16:11Speaker 3: want to be successful on the in the classroom, on
- 16:15Speaker 3: the field, and then you want to have you want
- 16:17Speaker 3: people that want to be here. I mean the sport
- 16:20Speaker 3: administrators and college athletics coaches and college athletics are now players.
- 16:26Speaker 3: You know, it's become a little bit like NASCAR. They'll
- 16:28Speaker 3: wear whatever logo pays in the most, and that's not
- 16:31Speaker 3: what you want if you're trying to build an enduring program,
- 16:33Speaker 3: and hopefully that's the case we have here.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Look across the board. I don't want any of our
- 16:37Speaker 2: jerseys looking like soccer. There's no offense. But it's just
- 16:39Speaker 2: kind of ridiculous. See how many advertisers on there. I
- 16:43Speaker 2: gotta ask you this though, because being a father and son,
- 16:46Speaker 2: we saw the Shador saga this weekend. It is an
- 16:50Speaker 2: influence from Dion or what is it that made him
- 16:52Speaker 2: go solo in the draft? I don't know.
- 16:56Speaker 3: I mean, there's been a lot of things said about
- 16:57Speaker 3: why you want that low than the draft. I think
- 17:00Speaker 3: one of the things that happened is as I watched him,
- 17:03Speaker 3: I think he's got an incredible amount of talent, but
- 17:07Speaker 3: I think the hype sometimes outruns the actual evaluations.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And again I didn't go to his pro days.
- 17:14Speaker 3: I didn't, so I don't I can't tell you what
- 17:16Speaker 3: they evaluate them on, what his interviews were like. But
- 17:19Speaker 3: you know, the one thing I think that people underestimate
- 17:22Speaker 3: and when it comes to the NFL is at the
- 17:23Speaker 3: end of the day, the pressure to win is the
- 17:28Speaker 3: overarching pressure. It's not political, it's not I don't like
- 17:32Speaker 3: the way this guy does certain things, but it's I'm
- 17:34Speaker 3: gonna trust, especially a quarterback. I'm gonna trust a lot
- 17:38Speaker 3: of money into you. I'm gonna trust my team, and
- 17:40Speaker 3: you're really, in most cases the most important guy in
- 17:44Speaker 3: our locker room, so we're gonna be very very critical.
- 17:47Speaker 3: And I think when when I'm still coaching, one of
- 17:50Speaker 3: things we would tell our guys is go to the combine, okay,
- 17:54Speaker 3: and have one pro day here. Don't let them work
- 17:57Speaker 3: you out ten times, because a lot of these people
- 17:59Speaker 3: are just looking for reasons to knock you down and
- 18:02Speaker 3: say okay. And the more chances you get for them
- 18:05Speaker 3: to find that one little thing that they don't like
- 18:08Speaker 3: about you, the more likely they already find it. And
- 18:11Speaker 3: this guy, he's worked out for a ton of people,
- 18:12Speaker 3: So I don't know. Maybe you know, especially when you're
- 18:15Speaker 3: throwing a lot, does your arm get tired or whatever
- 18:18Speaker 3: it may be. So, and I think there was probably
- 18:21Speaker 3: nobody under more of a microscope than he was, fairly
- 18:24Speaker 3: or unfairly. So I think there were a lot of
- 18:27Speaker 3: people looking for reasons not to take them rather than
- 18:30Speaker 3: to take them, and that's probably part of how it
- 18:32Speaker 3: played out. Now he's got a tremendous opportunity in terms
- 18:39Speaker 3: of you know, Michael Jordan was cut from his ninth
- 18:42Speaker 3: grade basketball team. Tom Brady was not the guy at
- 18:44Speaker 3: Michigan had to work his way up to get that,
- 18:46Speaker 3: and there was a six round pick.
- 18:48Speaker 1: So you can go one of two ways of this.
- 18:49Speaker 1: You can gripe and and be a problem, or you can.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Say, you know what, I'm gonna show every team that
- 18:55Speaker 3: did not draft me, they made a major mistake and
- 18:57Speaker 3: I'm going to go to an even higher level of
- 19:00Speaker 3: And I suspect that, you know, and I certainly hope
- 19:03Speaker 3: that's what happens with him.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Oh, I think he's fired up, and you know what,
- 19:06Speaker 2: I gotta plaut his optimism. The whole rounds he wasn't drafted,
- 19:09Speaker 2: he was still on Twitter saying, you know what, this
- 19:11Speaker 2: is gonna be the day. Today's gonna be the day.
- 19:12Speaker 2: And that's good optimism. You need that kind of healthy
- 19:14Speaker 2: optimism and confidence.
- 19:16Speaker 1: No question.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Look, you know, probably the best thing for him to
- 19:20Speaker 3: come in and be behind somebody for for a year
- 19:22Speaker 3: or so and.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And learned the game.
- 19:24Speaker 3: That position at that level is so hard to be
- 19:27Speaker 3: really really good at, and it is a it is
- 19:31Speaker 3: a it's a year round job. You never consid you know,
- 19:35Speaker 3: you look at the guys who's been great. Patrick Mahomes
- 19:38Speaker 3: of the world. Russell Wilson came out of the third round.
- 19:40Speaker 3: The guys I know that the guy I coached was
- 19:43Speaker 3: on the Seahawks at that time, said, this guy is
- 19:45Speaker 3: the first guy in last guy out. Watched his film
- 19:47Speaker 3: like Crazy. He said, you watch, he ends up winning
- 19:50Speaker 3: the super Bowl and going to another one. So I mean,
- 19:53Speaker 3: you know those things. You know he's got an opportunity
- 19:55Speaker 3: to do those things.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Absolutely. I gotta say, Jay, this man awesome to get
- 20:00Speaker 2: to have you once again. And you mentioned Russell, He's
- 20:04Speaker 2: going to lead the Giants to some big wins this year.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I have a feeling anyway, what do you think about that?
- 20:09Speaker 2: While I have you.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Look, I saw him against us in Wisconsin, and I said,
- 20:15Speaker 3: this guy's got a little something special.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Now, I didn't think he was gonna start as a rookie.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I didn't think. I'm not that smart. But you know,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I think I think, I think he's still got a
- 20:25Speaker 1: lot left in the tank.
- 20:26Speaker 3: I don't think he had a great supporting cast in
- 20:28Speaker 3: Pittsburgh in terms of the offensive line. So if they
- 20:31Speaker 3: can have the right kind of pieces around him, I
- 20:33Speaker 3: think he's still got the ability to do some good things.
- 20:35Speaker 3: The Steelers made the playoffs, which if you're a Giants
- 20:38Speaker 3: fan right now and someone said Russell Wills is going
- 20:40Speaker 3: to get you in the playoffs, I think you'd be
- 20:42Speaker 3: thrilled that right now from where you're sitting.
- 20:45Speaker 2: And you know, gab what what a pickup too to
- 20:48Speaker 2: have that backfield now.
- 20:49Speaker 3: So yeah, and you know, when you look at it,
- 20:52Speaker 3: a guy that went in the draft that I that
- 20:54Speaker 3: I had said was very similar to Russell Willson coming
- 20:57Speaker 3: out as Dylan Gabriel in Cleveland, you know, as much
- 20:59Speaker 3: as Shador's and that. You know, there's another guy that
- 21:02Speaker 3: I saw play live in person twice, once when he's
- 21:05Speaker 3: at Oklahoma, once when he was Oregon against you know,
- 21:08Speaker 3: he had a game winning drive against Texas and then
- 21:11Speaker 3: he had a game Oklahoma and a game winning drive
- 21:13Speaker 3: against Ohio State. I was at that game. So I mean,
- 21:16Speaker 3: you look at you know, there are guys that go
- 21:18Speaker 3: further down draft that position end up really surprising everybody.
- 21:21Speaker 2: You know, Oregon is so funny because it was like
- 21:23Speaker 2: the first year in the Big Ten. You wouldn't know
- 21:25Speaker 2: it though they seemed very experienced in the Big Ten already.
- 21:27Speaker 3: It looked like, well, Dan Landing has kind of always
- 21:30Speaker 3: been a hard nose, build a great offensive line, be physical.
- 21:35Speaker 1: That kind of stuff kind of guy.
- 21:37Speaker 3: So that that he was building towards that big ten
- 21:40Speaker 3: roster even before that. And I think he's one of
- 21:43Speaker 3: the I think he's one of the really great young
- 21:45Speaker 3: coaches in this game right now.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Now before before he went on, are you said that
- 21:50Speaker 2: you didn't think Cleveland was going to pick Abdua Carter
- 21:52Speaker 2: because what they were they were looking to trade down
- 21:54Speaker 2: to begin with, or what what happened with that second spot?
- 21:57Speaker 2: And how did you know you know Abduah was going
- 21:59Speaker 2: to land he did?
- 22:01Speaker 3: Well, I didn't necessarily know it, but you know, given
- 22:03Speaker 3: you know, if you have that elite pass rusher outside
- 22:06Speaker 3: with Garrett at Cleveland.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Mons Garrett, you don you don't want to spend you know,
- 22:12Speaker 1: you got to be careful.
- 22:13Speaker 3: You don't spend too much money just on that position
- 22:16Speaker 3: if you can get a guy who's really really good
- 22:18Speaker 3: further down the draft. And so I think the Browns
- 22:21Speaker 3: had a good draft because they got some of the
- 22:23Speaker 3: guys they wanted anyway, you know, the guy that you
- 22:26Speaker 3: know a lot of their.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Fans wanted to take Shador in the first round. They
- 22:29Speaker 1: got him in the fifth round and we're able to
- 22:30Speaker 1: get some other piece around it.
- 22:31Speaker 3: So I think, you know, I haven't evaluated the draft
- 22:34Speaker 3: class top to bottom, but I think they came out
- 22:36Speaker 3: and you know a lot of teams have done really
- 22:38Speaker 3: really well trading down still getting the guy they really
- 22:41Speaker 3: wanted and picking up extra picks. And anytime you can
- 22:43Speaker 3: get multiple people for one guy, I take that every day.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, all right's being of that. You know, Penn
- 22:51Speaker 2: State will continue to want to have kids be drafted out.
- 22:54Speaker 2: So what's what's next, Like, what's the outlook for Pennza
- 22:57Speaker 2: football as far as getting these kids to that level?
- 23:01Speaker 3: Well, I think next year's draft would be really interesting
- 23:03Speaker 3: for Penn State because they got a lot of high
- 23:06Speaker 3: profile guys coming back, much like Ohio State had last
- 23:09Speaker 3: year where a lot of those guys.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Could have gone the draft and came back.
- 23:13Speaker 3: And I think they had fourteen guys drafted because they
- 23:15Speaker 3: had a very veteran football team that won it all,
- 23:17Speaker 3: just like Michigan did the year before when they won
- 23:20Speaker 3: it all. I think Penn State's in that position, so
- 23:22Speaker 3: you'll see a lot of guys. I'm not even to
- 23:24Speaker 3: try and pretend like I know where they're going yet.
- 23:27Speaker 3: I'm sure there'll be a mock draft out, you know,
- 23:29Speaker 3: in a week or two for.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Next year already.
- 23:33Speaker 3: But I think that, you know, a lot of those
- 23:35Speaker 3: guys will play themselves into whatever position they get drafted,
- 23:38Speaker 3: I think.
- 23:39Speaker 1: But I'm more concerned about how well they play.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Oregon and Ohio State and whoever else they played in
- 23:46Speaker 3: the Big Ten next year and win the whole thing.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Were you impressed on how coach Franklin adapted though, to
- 23:51Speaker 2: having these new editions of the Big Ten? I mean
- 23:53Speaker 2: it seemed like they prepared well.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think some of those teams.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Of the teams, I think Oregon was one team that
- 24:00Speaker 3: was most ready, and it certainly played itself out. I
- 24:03Speaker 3: think Washington, you know, had had had had they had
- 24:07Speaker 3: Washington Oregon joined the Big Ten a year earlier, when
- 24:10Speaker 3: they had Pennix a quarterback, and Boonix and quarterback, you know,
- 24:14Speaker 3: and USC had been a year early. I think they
- 24:16Speaker 3: were better. Washington USC were better teams a year earlier
- 24:20Speaker 3: than they did last year. But I think those teams
- 24:22Speaker 3: now will know what it takes. I think Jed Fish
- 24:25Speaker 3: is gonna do a good job at Washington getting a
- 24:27Speaker 3: physical football team, which is kind of his mindset. I
- 24:32Speaker 3: think UCLA picking up the quarterback from Tennessee and looking
- 24:36Speaker 3: at how they finished the season versus how they started,
- 24:38Speaker 3: and I mean they played They had to go to
- 24:40Speaker 3: LSU last year as a road game on top of
- 24:43Speaker 3: the Big Ten schedule, A had to come to Penn State.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I mean they think they traveled twenty two twenty three
- 24:49Speaker 1: thousand miles in there in there on last season, which
- 24:53Speaker 1: is almost an entire lap around the equator.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Oh yeah, So I think that you know, these teams
- 24:59Speaker 3: are all having had the You're on the belt, gonna
- 25:00Speaker 3: make this conference even more interesting?
- 25:03Speaker 2: All right, Jay, I gotta ask you this because you're
- 25:05Speaker 2: sol in oo of college football and college sports in general. Well,
- 25:09Speaker 2: we ever see a transfer portal cap? Like will there
- 25:11Speaker 2: would be a cap on this day? I feel like
- 25:13Speaker 2: it goes crazy during these off seasons.
- 25:15Speaker 3: I think you're gonna have a point where there's gonna
- 25:17Speaker 3: be I think the goal is to get to one
- 25:19Speaker 3: transfer portal a year. So whether it's January after the
- 25:23Speaker 3: playoffs seasons are done for football, or whether it becomes
- 25:27Speaker 3: May after spring football is over, everybody wants to see
- 25:30Speaker 3: this settle down. I think where this is going to
- 25:32Speaker 3: end up is you're gonna have we just have to
- 25:35Speaker 3: be honest about what we are. And you know, we're
- 25:38Speaker 3: running sports entertainment enterprise on our campus. So I think
- 25:42Speaker 3: you're gonna end up having an employer employee relationship. You're
- 25:45Speaker 3: gonna have collective bargaining, and you have contracts like the NFL,
- 25:49Speaker 3: so you can settle essentially what the labor market is down.
- 25:53Speaker 3: I mean, one things you don't hear about when these
- 25:54Speaker 3: guys keep transfer from school to school to school is
- 25:57Speaker 3: how does this impact them academically? No one talked about
- 25:59Speaker 3: it and the ultimately that's what we're trying to do here.
- 26:02Speaker 3: But I think that's gonna be a challenge is how
- 26:05Speaker 3: do you balance the academic side with the business side
- 26:08Speaker 3: of it for these guys. I think a employer employee
- 26:11Speaker 3: relationship and collective bargaining will help settle all that down.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Now, as coach, right for seventeen years and beyond, did
- 26:19Speaker 2: a lot of kids come to you with anxiety of,
- 26:21Speaker 2: oh my god, I don't know if I a draft
- 26:22Speaker 2: or not. Was there a lot of anxiety in that
- 26:24Speaker 2: locker room come you know the draft time?
- 26:28Speaker 3: Yeah, but a lot of these guys, they would you know,
- 26:29Speaker 3: when they were done with their senior year, they would
- 26:31Speaker 3: then go train somewhere and then they go warm weather
- 26:35Speaker 3: place or they'd have these these you know, their agents
- 26:37Speaker 3: would set them up with a place to train, then
- 26:40Speaker 3: they'd come in.
- 26:40Speaker 1: So we didn't talk to them.
- 26:41Speaker 3: That much, and most of that process was handled by
- 26:45Speaker 3: their agents and buy them were directly with the team,
- 26:48Speaker 3: So we weren't as much a part of the process
- 26:49Speaker 3: as you would think. But yeah, you always had guys
- 26:52Speaker 3: that are you know, do my getting a draft? You know,
- 26:53Speaker 3: you read guys that were no.
- 26:56Speaker 1: No doubt first rounders that were worried about where the're
- 26:58Speaker 1: gonna draft them.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Like, look, if if someone picks you and they pay you,
- 27:02Speaker 3: you're better off than you are right now. So don't
- 27:04Speaker 3: worry about where you get picked or how much you
- 27:05Speaker 3: get paid, you know, just deal with it.
- 27:08Speaker 2: And would you encourage the kids to they say, like
- 27:10Speaker 2: an ECO, hey, worry about your performance, then get paid
- 27:13Speaker 2: type of thing. Is that what you would preaching?
- 27:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, ultimately, everybody's going to make some nil
- 27:18Speaker 3: money when you're that high profile, but I think you know,
- 27:20Speaker 3: whether you're making two point five million or three million,
- 27:23Speaker 3: in college.
- 27:24Speaker 2: I mean, and for those of them may not remember,
- 27:27Speaker 2: you're were in the room when an IL really started,
- 27:29Speaker 2: you held structured if I'm not mistaken, right.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I was.
- 27:33Speaker 3: I was on the board trustees, and certainly I've been
- 27:35Speaker 3: consulting on it with some people doing education systems and
- 27:39Speaker 3: things like that for NIL. So yeah, I've been around
- 27:42Speaker 3: it really since the start. And I think you know
- 27:45Speaker 3: what no one really, no one really understands, probably fully,
- 27:50Speaker 3: is how much pressure is on these guys and from
- 27:52Speaker 3: family members, from from agents, from people saying, well, if
- 27:56Speaker 3: you don't jump to the school, you're not getting as
- 27:58Speaker 3: much as you should rather than you know what, am
- 28:00Speaker 3: I making enough to do the things I want to do?
- 28:04Speaker 1: Great, because the real money's going to happen when I
- 28:06Speaker 1: get to the NFL. You know.
- 28:09Speaker 2: I've talked with people, a few of my friends, and they, well,
- 28:11Speaker 2: one particular said that the NIL is the reason why
- 28:14Speaker 2: all number ones won to get to the NCA Final four.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Is it possible that the money's going to help these
- 28:20Speaker 2: number ones and in these bigger schools and when we
- 28:23Speaker 2: see those fifteen over one upsets, you know, in the future.
- 28:27Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be harder, I think, because it
- 28:30Speaker 3: gould be harder for those mid if you talk about
- 28:32Speaker 3: basketball specifically, for those teams to kind of keep their
- 28:36Speaker 3: teams together. Like when Butler had that run, whether they
- 28:39Speaker 3: were in the finals or final fourteen years, I know
- 28:41Speaker 3: they were in the finals at least one of those
- 28:42Speaker 3: two years, they had a veteran team. The problem now
- 28:46Speaker 3: is that you look at it, some of those teams,
- 28:50Speaker 3: those guys get picked off and they won't have a
- 28:53Speaker 3: chance to build into that veteran team that you had.
- 28:56Speaker 3: So that part, but now we'll see how this plays
- 28:59Speaker 3: is a that goes along because if you're a school
- 29:02Speaker 3: like Georgetown, you have some wealthy alums that want to
- 29:05Speaker 3: put together a really good basketball team. You don't have
- 29:07Speaker 3: to worry about the football side of it. So you're
- 29:09Speaker 3: wealthy going to be all invested in the basketball side.
- 29:12Speaker 1: You know that. Maybe you know Yukon is a team
- 29:14Speaker 1: like that.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Now they have football, but they're not as invested in
- 29:16Speaker 3: football as they are in basketball. So a team like
- 29:20Speaker 3: Saint John's in New York, you know ken Rick Patino
- 29:24Speaker 3: round up enough money to continue that.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I think probably can because that's the sport for them.
- 29:29Speaker 3: So I think that we'll see some teams outside of
- 29:33Speaker 3: those powerful conferences that continue to be really, really really
- 29:36Speaker 3: good in basketball.
- 29:38Speaker 2: I love Saint John's there half a block away from
- 29:40Speaker 2: my old home, so there you go. Love what they're doing.
- 29:43Speaker 2: One last thing. I have friends at Penn Satan, they say,
- 29:45Speaker 2: and they were at the Blue and White game this
- 29:47Speaker 2: past weekend.
- 29:47Speaker 1: How was that?
- 29:49Speaker 3: I was actually out of town because I have kids
- 29:52Speaker 3: playing college across so I had to go to games
- 29:55Speaker 3: on Saturday and Sunday out of town, so I didn't
- 29:57Speaker 3: get to watch it.
- 29:57Speaker 2: But I will.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I'm going to get a I have a couple of
- 30:00Speaker 1: friends of mine.
- 30:01Speaker 3: That went that told me they've got written reports for well,
- 30:05Speaker 3: you know, these guys aren't football guys, and said, I
- 30:07Speaker 3: don't know if I trust your written reports, but.
- 30:09Speaker 2: I mean, these spring games are televised. How did that
- 30:11Speaker 2: become a thing where it's a bigger thing on the
- 30:13Speaker 2: spring now?
- 30:14Speaker 3: Well, the thing was this one wasn't televised because normally
- 30:17Speaker 3: I'd go and say, let me see the television. But
- 30:20Speaker 3: a lot of people are a lot of coaches don't
- 30:22Speaker 3: want to televise them anymore. Because you're now giving people
- 30:25Speaker 3: a chance to look at your second scouting report on
- 30:28Speaker 3: those third end.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Oh wow, that.
- 30:30Speaker 3: Guy could help us. Now let's go give him money.
- 30:33Speaker 3: So everybody, you know, one thing coaches are I mean,
- 30:36Speaker 3: they can all deny it. There's a level of paranoia
- 30:39Speaker 3: in every coach that somebody's trying to do something to
- 30:42Speaker 3: take one of our guys, and especially in this era
- 30:45Speaker 3: where there's really no rules.
- 30:46Speaker 2: You know, I just realized I haven't had you on
- 30:48Speaker 2: since I believe that the Egos won the Super Bowl.
- 30:51Speaker 2: So I want your reaction to that real quick. How
- 30:54Speaker 2: are they able to shut down the Chiefs? I mean,
- 30:56Speaker 2: that's a pretty impressive game.
- 30:57Speaker 3: There, pass rush, pass rush, and you know, it's become
- 31:01Speaker 3: a quarterback league, and the best way, the best pass
- 31:06Speaker 3: defense there is is pass rush. And the Eagles could
- 31:08Speaker 3: get to Mahomes with just four guys rushing, which meant
- 31:12Speaker 3: they could leave seven guys in coverage. And I can
- 31:15Speaker 3: tell you, as a guy who coached quarterbacks, if they
- 31:17Speaker 3: can get you with four guys, you gonna you got.
- 31:19Speaker 3: You have to be really creative and things you do, run,
- 31:22Speaker 3: draw screens, whatever. I think the Steeler I mean the
- 31:24Speaker 3: Eagles to me there, they're defensive.
- 31:29Speaker 1: They should have given the front four the MVP of
- 31:32Speaker 1: that game, because that was the difference in the game.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Back Patrick, That's how the Giants be Brady two times, no.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Question about it.
- 31:39Speaker 3: And I mean that, like I said, that's the most
- 31:41Speaker 3: effective pass defense there is the four man pass rush
- 31:44Speaker 3: that can get there.
- 31:45Speaker 2: And I think you had a little more best of
- 31:47Speaker 2: an interest because a certain Saquon wasn't the Super Bowl this.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Year, right, no question about it.
- 31:51Speaker 3: It certainly a guy who's conducted himself as nothing but
- 31:55Speaker 3: class represented Penn State, represent the Giants when he was
- 31:58Speaker 3: there with class represents the class, represents his home community
- 32:03Speaker 3: with class in Parkland High School.
- 32:05Speaker 1: So I mean, this is a guy that's just I mean,
- 32:07Speaker 1: everything about him is.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Great and he couldn't be. And I'm not an Eagles fan.
- 32:12Speaker 3: I in fact, I don't really don't have a favorite
- 32:14Speaker 3: team in the NFL. I just kind of watch them all.
- 32:15Speaker 3: But it's hard not to root for him. And even
- 32:18Speaker 3: a guy like Jalen Hurts is not a Penn Stater,
- 32:20Speaker 3: it's hard not to root for a guy that conducts
- 32:22Speaker 3: himself that way.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Although I do think the tush push should be semi illegal,
- 32:27Speaker 1: that is something.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Else all right. On that note, because the Giants have
- 32:31Speaker 2: another Penn state, you know player here in abdul Carter.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Will you be making appearance. I've met Life Stadium during
- 32:36Speaker 2: one of these games this year.
- 32:38Speaker 3: I'd like to depends on my you know, it depends
- 32:41Speaker 3: on kids' schedules, and you know, once you have kids,
- 32:43Speaker 3: your schedule is no longer your own.
- 32:46Speaker 1: But I definitely would like to get out there for
- 32:48Speaker 1: one to see the Giants.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Well, if you do, let me know. I'm on the
- 32:51Speaker 2: link up there. That would be awesome. We'll do all right,
- 32:54Speaker 2: Jay Paternal thanks so much for joining me once again
- 32:57Speaker 2: the One up Network. I'll tell you breaking news right
- 33:00Speaker 2: after abdual Carter gets drafted number three by the Giants.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Thanks again, Jay.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Thanks
