Transcript
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: It's um episode nine on a very special let's stick together episode.
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I can't express my excitement enough in the fact that we've got rid of Brendan and as we promised we have subbed him in for the one and only Maddie Hinch.
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: Maddie, how are you?
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Good, thank you.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Are you more excited about getting rid of Brendan or having some time with me, Rose?
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: That's what I want to know.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: I'll let you pant that.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: What was the question?
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: You've just got the biggest smile on his face.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: It's like the it's like a new man on a on on the podcast.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: Normally we gotta start poking the bear early, but we just got a couple of happy people knowing that Brendan isn't gonna ruin our podcast.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's let's let's cut Brendan like some slack.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: He's not always ruining it because he makes it like it's it's good to make fun of Brendan because he can take it very well.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: It's just he's such a fuck up sometimes, and it's like it's it's just who he is.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: We love you, but uh we're really excited to have Maddie on.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: I think that's the proper way to say it, right?
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, maybe I'll do a proper introduction before we even start bashing Brendan because that's that's probably wrong, isn't it?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Um we haven't it will happen enough during the podcast itself.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, pretty certain.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: Um we haven't been the kindest to goalies on this podcast, Maddie, but I mean we are really getting we're really getting treated this week.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: We've basically got one of the biggest hockey personalities and players in in recent times in world hockey.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Maddie, for anyone who doesn't know, shot to fame for winning Olympic gold in Rio in the Olympics, and was basically the queen of shootouts ever since then.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: I think she basically won shootout anytime England or GB went into a shootout, the other team have basically lost before they started.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Um, if anyone has seen the the writing on the bottle of her research.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: Um you had a you've recently retired, I'm sure we'll get into that.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: You had 115 England caps and 68 Great Britain caps.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: You won you did the three-peat of the world goalie of the year in 2016, 17, and 18.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: Jesus, we we're gonna carry on.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: Um you won Olympic gold in Rio, you won Olympic bronze in Tokyo, you've won gold, silver, and bronze in the Europeans, gold, silver and bronze in the Commonwealth Games.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Um so fair to say you've you've done alright.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not been too shabby, has it?
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: That's why it's time to call it a day.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm thinking.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: That is an easy introduction, I've got to say.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: You but are you are you sad that you know obviously we had Flor on uh on a couple of a couple of weeks ago and he put us all to shame, and now we've got someone else putting us to shame.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Well, I think it's I think, and I've always said I think it's more impressive for uh uh a women's team or like a female player other than a Dutch player to have this resume.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: I think we're living in a world in which women's hockey is um like with all respect like dominated by uh the Dutch women for the last like decade.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: So I think in this era uh in which in which the the Dutch women have been so fucking unreal that it's like even more impressive to have a resume with like that many prizes on it and like um that many accolades.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I was always uh impressed uh with Maddie, so but now that I hear it even more.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: So uh I'm happy she's uh like humble enough to join our uh little uh podcast.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Our lowly podcast.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: Um how does that I mean Maddie, you've just retired.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Like, how does it how does it feel when you when we say that and like and we give you that introduction?
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: Are you are you really proud of what you've done?
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Of course, it's still incredibly awkward, I think, to sit and have someone list out the accolades.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna lie, I don't think you'd ever get comfortable with hearing that stuff, but it does, it does make me sometimes think like, wow, like I really was lucky.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: I just feel incredibly grateful to I think being part of a bit of a it was a golden era for the for the GB in England women's size.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Like we did do the unthinkable and beating the Dutch a few times along the way, and ultimately you do have to beat them to go and get the kind of ultimate prizes.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's really hard to do.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: And I was part of these teams that we definitely had a period where we, you know, there was there was fear in the opponent.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: The Dutch definitely doubted us at times, and that's hard to get them to ever doubt anyone.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And they doubted at moments that they could beat us, and the shootout certainly helped.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: And um yeah, I described it, I guess, on the news the other week as a bit of a fairy tale career.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: It's the only way to look back on it.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Um, I feel I'd love to relive all those moments.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: I still like to see highlights on like, God, I wish I could just remember that feeling all over again.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: And that's gonna be hard to replicate.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I don't think I'll ever be able to replicate that in any whatever direction my life goes now.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: That's the sad bit about it.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: But I feel lucky to have had multiple of those moments, and I know how hard it is for any elite athlete to even have that feeling just once.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Um, so like if they're just grateful.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Phil, that's probably, yeah, right.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: I I've I've got a couple of feelings, but they re I really don't think I've hit any of them yet, if we if we're talking about them.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: I mean the it's coming, it's coming.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: There's no need, so early, man.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, before we get into the like the nitty-gritty and all this all this stuff, we we put it out to the listeners about uh you know some questions and we'll get into them.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: But there was a huge there has to be, we've just got to address the elephant in the room.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: Everyone wanted to know about lots of questions about Brendan.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're mainly mainly abusive.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: You've spoken at this a lot.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: Um can you just clear a few things up for the listeners, Maddie?
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: Just yeah, do I have a chance?
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: Oh god, right, okay.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: We'll take that that awkward silence as a no you.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: Um what someone wrote in saying, Does Brendan talk more to you than he does on the podcast?
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: Uh only just someone else asked, could he score past you?
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Um no, I don't think he could.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: Brendan has the capability to score past you.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: I just don't think he's got the mentals.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: I think if he he'd be like smashing balls in, and then I think you'd step in front of the goal and he'd be like, Oh no.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: That's exactly how it goes, and then he'd try too hard.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna put my money myself for that one, I think, in that battle.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'd put the money on you too.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Does in Holland we say who wears the pants?
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Do you wear the pants in your guys' relationship?
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Do you know 100%?
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: I'm wearing the pants.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, I'm the boss.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: That's not changing.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: As much as you might like it, too.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it's kettlepot black because Plone always wear also wears the pens in the relationship, so it's like I'm poking fun at Brandon, but I'm 100%.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I think Nicole wears the pens as well.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: With a better species, we know what we're talking about.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: It's fair.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: It's fair.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Come on, it's no different with you and Nick.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: I know who's in charge there as well.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't go that far as the better species, but I I completely agree that you guys wear the pants 100%.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: Also, Maddie, I guess a big question is uh do you actually listen to our podcast?
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Um, and yeah, what what do you think?
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: Like uh have you have you had to be forced into it as Brendan forced you in, or uh well, have we forced you in by having you?
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, I have to be very honest.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I was not a fan of Let's Stick Together at the beginning.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Mainly, yeah, yeah, mainly because I was telling Brendan off for not sticking up for himself against you ropes, because you were just battering him every week, and he and he had no comebacks.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: I was like, Brendan, you're better than this, like stands standing around and uh and we were actually arguing over your silly podcast.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Um I refused to listen to it unless he was trying to get feedback on how it's proven I was being a right deeper and not getting involved.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: Um, this is the inside the world.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's come a long way, I have to say, it's come a long way.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm not sure I'm not sure Ben's still standing up for himself as much as I would like, but I do now listen.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: It's very much part of my car journeys.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, I've got a lot of my teal with teammates listening to it as well.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I have to say, guys, you're pretty entertaining, liking the hot hot topics, like the honesty.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: You're coming on board was a big one for sure.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: It's really improved the dynamics.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, pass the pod.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Thank you, Maddie.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: Even though you're like clearly mad with me and maybe you know, I appreciate you passing the pod.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: That's that's very nice of you.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, you and a message for Brendan, because I'm almost certain he will listen to this one.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Brendan stand up for yourself, boy.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: You've got this.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It's almost the equivalent of uh uh a mother sending her kid to school and tell tell the like the ones who bullied them, you gotta say this, this, and this.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Stand up for yourself.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: So and you've also hit the nail on the head here as well, Maddie, because you is a huge fan of you.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Um, he's he said again and again, I don't know if you've listened far enough back, but he has repeated himself numerous times.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: You know, you're his favorite British player, favorite women's player.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: Um, you actually like is getting quite big time himself.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: He has a new fan account called Yupe's Baby Girl.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: Um and I actually wanted to know have you had any really weird what isn't Medi?
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: Isn't Medi's Bernard a gun?
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: Have you have you had any strange um fan moments?
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: Like, is anyone too too um forthcoming?
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: I mean you're big time, so this is I mean you're probably one of the only hockey players we can actually ask this to.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: I do get some weird requests, I'm not gonna lie.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't tend to look in that inbox, you know, that you shouldn't really look in.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: I do avoid it, but when I have looked, I've I've reminded myself immediately why I don't look.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: I get I get many proposals on there.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, many proposals.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: I don't think a lot of people still know I'm with Brenda despite being nearly four years.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Um so lots of proposals.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Uh and then I get obviously the odd fan who's just incredibly overwhelmed when they meet you in person and like brought to tears type vibes, which is yeah, it's a lot.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I don't even understand why still anyone wants my signature.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: I still find that world a bit weird.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Um, so when someone starts bawling their eyes out and uncontrollably shaking because they're meeting you for you know for the first night in person.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: That I mean, how what do you even do?
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Give them a hug, and if you give them a hug, they get even more overwhelmed and they start crying even more.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: So well, I feel I feel like we'd react similarly.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Now I feel like you would just lap it up, he'd be absolutely buzzing about that.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: I've spotted you in the crowd at Tilburg Ladies' Games.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: I know he's talking me a little bit.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: I've seen him there.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're not hard to miss you, so I can see you're watching my games.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my glowing personality always shines, yeah.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: That's what you mean, right?
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Not my physique, but like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Well, I've I've I've I've I've come and watched a couple games of Tilburg.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're you're a fan or you're a fan, Phil.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: You gotta like I own up to it.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: So I came, I came and watched a couple games to which uh like the I've I was it was by far the most horrendous game I've watched ever when you guys played Rotterdam at home.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, yes, I apologize.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: That was terrible.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: I was busy then you got to see me back.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: You were great.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: You got a lot, you you you you got a lot of balls, but like the it was f I was 60 minutes of my life.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: I I thought it already but it was 60 minutes of my life and never got back, but at least I got to see you shine and you guys pulled out a victory.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: So I don't see it was an absolute robbery, that's the best way to describe it.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, one shot on goal.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this league just trying to rob points from everyone else.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: That's what we're doing.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: You guys are doing pretty solid again.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: You won.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're having one in there.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: We could do this segment of the podcast where we talk about our results, actually.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Because I don't I don't yeah, I didn't I didn't predict this, but actually, let's go UP first.
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: How how did you get on this weekend?
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's we we don't we're fucking drawing everything.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm fucking annoyed by it to be honest.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Now we start again, we drew again.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: We were up one-nil, nothing going on.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: We we were we were better than Hagese, and probably Hagese would think they were better, but like they we were better, like objectively, we were better.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: We would dominate in the game.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: We got a stupid green card.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: At least this time it was not me who got the card, so that's that's a win.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: And then yeah, we fucked it up again.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: We got a they they had they had this penalty uh corner, and like Wallace got like a like a bunt or whatever.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: It went on the on the line stop, and yeah, it all went to shit.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: So we drew again.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: But you, Medi, what did you do?
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: We won! We won a game.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: It's been okay.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: So I think it's been since October or November was the last time we won.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Like it was getting pretty dire, but we were like close in every game we've played.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Um, whether that's close in reality in the game, no, but in the score line, we're like we're hanging on in there in some of these matches, so you think, oh, what if?
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: And then of course the table is pretty crazy, as in like you could be two wins away from being back in the top four or a loss away from being relegated.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: So this weekend we played Rotterdam, who were the one uh the team below us, and there was only a three-point gap, three, four-point gap.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: So it was a must-win.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Um, and um, we we nearly threw it away, was got got it back.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: It was two two at one point, I think, with four minutes to go, and we got the winner.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: So now I think Rotterdam are almost but guaranteed play downs, and we're now joined 17 points with three other teams.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: So, and we've got all those teams to play, so it's getting quite exciting.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, we're doing all right, we're doing all right.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: We had an amazing first half of the season where we we did get some robbery points from people, um, and that's kept us in the league, and now we're starting to believe a little bit, which is exciting, it's a bit more fun now.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, it's nice when you play on a Saturday night and you get a win and you can just chill on a Sunday and kind of watch all the drama unfold around you.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: I do like that feeling, and I hadn't had it for a little while.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: So good weekends.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: Amazing.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I should just point out, I'm pretty sure people will know this, but Maddie's playing her hockey at the moment out in Holland in Tilburg, and she is she's what sounds like you're in a relegation scrap, but and you're coming out on top at the moment.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, relegation scrap, but it's our first year in this division.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: So obviously last year we did the unthinkable and managed to actually um relegate Yupe's women's equivalent, the Orany Road.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Um, and uh yeah, so this year a lot of these girls are getting their first taste of like the top, the top league.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and we're learning it's really quite hard up there.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Um and the league, I think, is probably one of the more exciting it's ever been.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: A lot of teams have taken points off each other.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: When I was playing at Stixer years ago, it was really quite predictable.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: Um, whereas this year it's yeah, it's good, it's it's really fun.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Um, I would like to get out of the mess, it's not gonna lie, I'd like to know when I'm coming home.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Um, because obviously, if uh we do go to play down, it's got a couple of a couple weeks longer, and then we'd have to play someone from that league lower.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And I know that's standard.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Oh goodness.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: Um, and I also know when you're in it, you can win it.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: So, because that's what happened to us last year.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: We we never should have beaten that team in on paper.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, talk about a robbery.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: She badly got a chance.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Talk about a robbery again.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Shootouts when you guys in.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, all three shootouts.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: It was the end.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: We knew if we can hang on, park the bus, take it to a shootout, we might actually do this.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: It was the most, I have to say, that that that three days or that week was why I play in Holland.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: The the atmosphere, the the you know, the blue smoke, the red smoke, uh, all going to shootouts, night games.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: I think two, three thousand people at each game.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Um, one of the best experiences I've ever had at club, and that was going and playing in the league lower over here.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: It was honestly awesome.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Um, I wouldn't change it for a second, but of course, when your whole season is coming down to a shootout, yeah.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: I thought I'd felt pressure, but I think it's one of the worst I'd felt yet.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Um, but super fun, loved it.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's really nice to be back in this league and kind of taking on all the the big girls and stuff.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: We can we can we can actually follow on with a couple of questions here because firstly, last week we talked about England hockey like banning flares and signs and banners.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, but first, Phil, before we get into this, I re you beat Brendan.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Because the whole reason we got the whole reason we got media was Brendan was too sad to come on the pot.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: That's why we got we got media, right?
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: I was not what happened.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: Well, well, maybe it's it's it was a good it was a good bad weekend for Holcomb.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: We played in the in the semi-final against Brendan on Saturday night.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: Uh Holcomb versus Serbiton.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: Uh it was it was really good actually.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: For English hockey, they did the league finals, and uh we obviously did the pod about it.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: They sold a lot of tickets and it was super busy.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: And there was a lot of abusive people on Saturday night, especially because there's a lot of people rooting for Surbiton, a lot of abuse getting thrown Holcomb's way, and we uh went and went and scraped uh a 2-1 win.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: Um it was it was a lot of fun, and that secured us EHL for next year, which is huge, something that we didn't expect we were gonna do.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: I got into it with Brendan, I think I'll go into it with all my friends.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: Um wasn't the nicest guy on Saturday night, not gonna lie.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: Brendan, you'll be happy to know, Maddie.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Brendan boshed me off the ball on on Saturday night.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: So I mean, I think 100% 100% sticking up for himself, and then I told him, What the fuck are you doing, you know, bed, or something like that, and then and then we had our classic do that, and then you'd like to have a hug afterwards.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: So it's all all fun and games.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: And then we played OGs in the final on Sunday and got spanked 5-1.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: So, you know, the highs and lows of hockey.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: I'll reiterate, maybe just go away from the hockey and say it was a good weekend for club hockey in England because we finally got a load of people down, got it super busy, people having beers, they put up a uh uh gazebo and food stalls and stuff like that, and it was it was a good weekend.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Now, all that's left to do for English club hockey is franchise it, and you guys be like perfectly fine.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: We might get more into that when Brendan can answer for himself as well, because we we did have some good fun on Saturday night.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: I did want to follow up with Maddie though, because a couple of things.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: So you've said you're playing in, I think, by far the best league in the world, and we had a couple of people asking, like, who's your favourite player to play with, but who's also the hardest striker to play against?
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: So I think it's maybe a good place to start about the hardest striker to play against in your career.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: Is anyone uh immediately standing out?
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: I guess uh the thing is now I can actually tell.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: I've had this question to me a few times uh on various things, and obviously I don't really want to say because I don't really want to give that person even more reason to think that they're gonna score against me.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Um, I have to say the what the one person that has given me sleepless nights in the past is Frederick Matler.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Um she hits a ball so fucking hard, it's not even funny.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: And she, I swear she's aiming for my head every time.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Like the amount of goals she scored past me from the baseline when we were playing at Stixer was not even funny, and I would actually just see it going in before it was hitting it.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: I had to go see receive like psychological help about this backhand.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Like it actually, she was fully in my head and I was crumbling.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Um, luckily I managed to get over that and I and it's fine.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: I can't I can't stop the old one.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: But even then when it came back into league, I remember thinking, oh god, here we go again.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Um so for me, she's definitely someone who I I think is a phenomenal forward.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: I think she's yeah, she hits the ball so goddamn hard, there's no way most goalies are not not um not fearing her a little bit.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I can happily say it now because I will never face her ever again.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: She can go on and do that to everyone else.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Um, and then uh Beth, what was the other question?
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Best player.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: I played.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, who's your who's your like favourite player that you have ever played with?
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Um what in Holland?
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: No, and I guess anywhere.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: Let's open it up for for for Great Britain, England, whoever you play for.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Oh god, that is a tough one.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: I guess I was thinking this, I'd someone asked this, and I was thinking it's along the lines of who's like, you know, like when you've got them in front of you, you're probably like really happy.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: I I was trying to think who's my favorite player I've ever played with, and I can't raise quite it's a really hard question.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Well, I I I think I'm not gonna answer before Melly, but I don't know if she was that good back then.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: But I for me, by far the best player right now in women's hockey is Xander Watt, but I'm maybe I'm alone in that opinion.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: I was I was gonna say, like, Zani is for sure.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: I feel very lucky to have shared a team with her because I think she's an incredible talent.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: I said that from the day I I met her years ago at Sticks.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: So I was like, you are, if not now, going to be the best player in the world.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: I think she's kind of overshadowed by being surrounded by stars.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Um, but for me, the girl reads the game like no other girl I've ever seen, and she plays the game differently to any other girl on the on the on the circuit.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: So I think she is phenomenal.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Um, I think she's one of the most competitive human beings I've also ever met.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: She's a little shit when she wants to be, um, but all in a good way because she just wants to win.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: And I think when you've got teammates like that, you kind of know you're always in the fight.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Because she shows it in every action that she's doing, so she was definitely a name on the back of my head.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I was just a bit conscious of naming another Dutch player.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Um, because I've obviously I've also had the luxury to just share the feel with the lights of like an Alex Danson, who I have to say is also kind of also a bit of a knob on the pitch back in the day, but the loveliest human being off it.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: But these guys are like the real winners, they are match fighters, they're the ones that you know are gonna kind of go to the death for the win.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: They're the teammates you want to have around you.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: So for me, Al, Zanny, your case, you Christas, the guys that really just die for the win.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: That you know, I feel like we're missing that a little bit these days with this new Gen Z generation.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: They're all a little bit soft in my eyes, and we need to bring them back.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: I do, I I agree actually.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Like just because I feel like this is getting a little bit lost, is that you can't be the really, really I mean, maybe you can, but it's it's quite hard to be this really hard person now because it's everything gets taken quite personally, maybe.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: And we talked about a little bit about this like bringing that fight back, and as long as you can step off the pitch and cross the white line at the end of the game or the end of a training session and be able to shake everyone's hands, look everyone in the eye, and say, I was just trying to win, I was doing what was best for my team.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: It's an important quality to have, isn't it?
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: It really is, and I I I honestly think it's it's becoming less and less, and I do think it comes down to people taking stuff personally and think it's more than it than it actually is, and and it and the ability to kind of separate the two, I guess, is becoming harder.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, I mean, I don't know how people would have described me on the pitch, whether I'm a knob on it and a knob off it as well.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, I definitely am like, you know, I used to have these maddie patties, as they call them, like actually lose my fucking shit, break sticks, like not okay, not okay.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: And I wouldn't advise any goalie to go down that route, but I do think the fieriness gives you the edge and just that like ability to switch into like fuck you mode.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: So and I think you've gotta have it.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: I just believe you've got to have it at the very top.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: And if you don't have that ability to make that switch, and whether you push the butt, you know, those boundaries and you are getting cards, why you get sent off all the time because it's a bit of a knob.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's the same sort of stuff, so it's like okay, you need that, you need that fire in your belly, and I do feel like it's becoming a little soft.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: I just it's it's my gut feeling, and it's you know, when is that gonna change?
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know whether you're seeing it in Holland as well, you but for sure in England it's it's going that that way.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: I think we're missing some of those those kind of players in Holland for sure as well.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: I think like the the young players, and I um I I've I've let's I've never lost my shit on the field, still can vouch for me.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: I've never threw my stick around or anything, but like the the the the the young guys from now they cannot take shit.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: This they're on the verge of crying every time you yell at them.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: I've had I've had Ming van der Wit like hit balls at me just because I didn't pass it hard enough to him, and and then I was sitting there.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: I uh to be fair, I came home with my parents, cried on the couch, and said I wanted to quit hockey at a certain point.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: That's neither here nor there.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: But like these are they're fucking soft as shit, and I'm fucking dead.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: We said it last week, like we we we talked about like talent and whether talent is like like the play, like lost talent.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: We got a question about, and I and I said, and I still really believe in it, is that like being mentally tough is also a part of being talented, or like being talented.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: I don't believe in a really good hockey player that has no mental skills.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: I think that's like that's nothing.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: I think all the good players have some like a I like how you say like a fuck you mode, or like uh like I don't give a shit who's in front of me, I'm gonna go through them.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: I think that's what what separates the like the the the the yeah, how do you say it?
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Like the best from the from the good, yeah, it's like the good from the great.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: I I honestly think that's you know what makes the real great players.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Most of them on the pitch, you would say, are probably knobs, or they certainly come across that way, but they're probably amazing humans off it.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: But they do have that ability to just make that switch, and of course, it comes in all different forms, but I I feel like we are seeing it less and less these days, and yeah, I can't put my finger on why.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: Um it's it's a generation thing.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and this isn't advocating just being a knob, it's advocating like competitiveness, it's advocating drive, and I think it's like something that if you have a deep desire to win, you know, bring out what's gonna make you win.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: Um, one of our coaches at the moment is just talking about you're either a furry creature or you're an animal.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: Be the fucking be the fucking animal is the answer.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: And and uh maybe this is the thing, can you do it in a skill?
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: I think also this important that you do stuff in a skillful way if you have been a knob or you've had this drive to win, still having the conversations afterwards to explain why you're doing it is important, isn't it?
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, that's all we've we've uh hopefully done a really good point there.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: Well done, well done us, well done Maddie.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Um can I move it on?
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: A couple more a couple more questions for you.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: What's the best save you've ever made?
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: Best save I've ever made.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Um there is there's I mean, so there's one save that is most it was on um on uh I think the FII shared it recently off the back of my announcement where I'm basically falling over in a shootout and and like managed to recover and um touch it over the bar.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: That's got to be one of my favourite slash the luckiest save of my career.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: Everyone will be like, oh, it's because you do this.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Guys, it was pure luck.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: I'm literally just panicking in the moment and throwing myself, but we'll take it.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: And then I think the best save that sticks out in my memory that I don't think anyone really knows about is actually in the Rio final where there's a uh a backhand from uh Neomi Van Ask on the top of the circle, and she hits the crossbar, but on the way to the crossbar, it touches the top of my stick and goes on the crossbar.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Now, it was only, I think, back in April that year that I went out to Holland to work with Martine Driver to work on my stick saves because in Holland we don't really focus, it's sorry, in England we don't really focus on glove stuff that much, especially the stick side.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: And in Holland, I think all keepers are naturally very good with their stick.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to understand why, and I was like, I need to work on this.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: So I went out there and did that, and I did reps and reps and reps and reps all summer leading into this, and then just so happened that in the final there was the slightest of touch that put it onto the crossbar that was part of an already an amazing final that in my eyes was like, that is why I do all the work for these tiny little things.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: I don't care if no one saw it, I knew I touched it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: And and for me, it's Naomi Van Ass hitting a ball as hard as she ever can.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: She's a legend, I've just saved it.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Things are going quite all right here, and we're really in this game.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: So for me, that was probably my favorite.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: Um, that was instantly my question, though.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: Like, do how do you let people know when you've saved it and they don't see?
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: I know sometimes as well.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: You're definitely disappointed when they give like a 16, and you're like, I touched that, that was a safe.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's a touch and not corner.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: I asked about my notes.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: We didn't get much moment in the lineup, guys.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: But I'm gonna big up the keepers here because I know how much of a shit you give to my uh my type as such.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm coming up.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you gotta like I want to pitch in on that because you you you gotta give you gotta be fucking mental to stand in the goal with people whacking balls at you at 150 miles an hour.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: You gotta be a little, little cuckoo in the head.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you're the one that runs out to the top of the circle with a six-inch shin pads and a gum shield.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: Never said I was the same one here.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: Never said that.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: I just said also you're not shit as well.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: I just think you have to be a bit of a mental case to stand in the goal and like be purposely hit, purposefully hit.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's uh get enjoyment out of it.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: You're right, it is weird.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: It is very weird.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: But we are very safe.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: We are very safe.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: I do think we're the ones with the helmet on our heads, and thank God, because you are.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: I I mean, without my helmet on, I'm not going out there.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: No, not happening.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: As much as I want to score a goal one day, I'm not doing it.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: I'm not doing the classic retirement and going up front for like Maidenhead Lady Sports or something.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: I'm not doing it.
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: Well, someone actually asked what what level of women's hockey could you play outfield?
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: That's actually quite the worst level.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: I hate running.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Like, I kid you not, I was literally on the phone to my brother the other day because he uh yes today, that was today, and they he did the Brighton Marathon yesterday and he bailed out at 22 miles.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: He's gonna hate that I've made that a public uh announcement, but there you go.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Uh he's normally very good, he doesn't train for them and he normally gets around the lucky shit.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Because I do you remember during COVID, everyone was nominating everyone for these 5Ks?
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: Do you remember?
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like a 5k.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: Well, anyways, I live with a guy called Ollie who ate McDonald's, I think, every day.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: And Ollie was like, Mads, let's go do our 5k because I've been nominated about 20 times and I still haven't gone.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: So off I go.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: And he's running on McDonald's, and I'm running on a pretty good athlete diet training pretty much in my prime because we were supposed to be games Olympics.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: Anyways, I literally couldn't complete the 5k.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: I got to four, I had serious pains in my knees, and I spent a whole week going down the stairs backwards because I am that much of a bad runner.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: So if I am gonna go score a goal, I've got to be that lazy forward that literally hangs in the top D, doesn't press.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: That's so if anyone's out there is happy to sign me for that role, I'll come and do it.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Maidenhead fours for a goal.
- 31:16SPEAKER_03: Maddie's already said she wants in as long as she can goal hang.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Goal hang, no running, no pressing.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: Um yeah.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: That sounds good to me as well.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: Maybe I'll join.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: That sounds excellent.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so not a runner, that's why I'm in goal.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: You already don't do a lot in a whole lot different, Phil.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: Mate.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: Right, just before we take a break, Maddie.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: Very quickly, last couple of serious ones.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: What we we're we're we're an equal podcast here.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: What's your highest moment that you've ever had, and what's your lowest moment?
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Highest moment, um, my absolute high, high, high was actually the European gold in London, just because at home, first experience of a gold medal, shootout win, pack home crowd, nothing better.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: So that was my honestly, I can say that that feeling I think is still stands out to me as the most.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Um, and then lowest, um, oh god, I've had some bad ones.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: I think um I remember just before our home World Cup in 2018, off the back of obviously the Olympics, I was really struggling with what I call a little bit like the weight of the gold medal.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: I was having a terrible time with myself.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Um, and I remember going into the change room, I think a week before the opening game and crying my eyes out to Alex Danson and saying how terrified I am to go and play in this tournament.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: And I was basically, yeah, like a shadow of the human that I wanted to be and battling mentally big time.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: So that is the lowest moment of my career, kind of the start of what for me was a really difficult 10 months.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: Um, and that's I mean, a lot of people would be like amazed to hear that.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: Like, thanks for sharing, because like that's that's but like you were like the three-time world goalie of the year with uh an Olympic gold around your neck, and you know, like no.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, we were a team that planned for everything in the Olympics, but the one thing we didn't plan for was winning it.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Um, and I certainly didn't plan for a bit of fame or a bit of all of a sudden the the maddy hinge roar from 10 10,000 people and the expectation to be a superhuman is what I felt.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that was pretty tough to take.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, it's just part of my journey and more than happy to share it.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: It's all it's all part of it, isn't it?
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: And it's great to have other people on here and other incredibly successful people on here and sharing that everyone has them crazy highs, but also everyone has them crazy lows.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: And it's again, maybe Yupe's message, you know, to the kids out there the mental resilience.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: You gotta have the mentors, eh, Yup.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: Um, that's a pretty excellent way to finish part one.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: We will be back in a sec.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: A couple of of the fun questions that we had from Addy and that we came up with uh ourselves.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: First of all, I mean, Yoops talks about this, how cool it is that you and other hockey players are sponsored by Red Bull.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Like, how cool is it being a Red Bull athlete?
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: Like, how how did it kind of come about?
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: And you know, what are the perks?
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: And if you've got the crazy cool helmet, I mean, it just seems like you're living the dream over there.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have to say that was a bit of a um, oh my god, my phone just told me it's bedtime.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: I'm staying up late for you guys.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: You're welcome.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Um, so Red Bull, so that actually came about from the fact that I do drink the product.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: Now I'm not just putting this out there because I'm contractedly obliged to say so, which I'm not, but I do drink the product.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Um, and that was because one of my teammates at Leicester used to work for Red Bull.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: So she introduced me at like what, age 17 or something, um, as part of my game day routine.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: And they actually scout athletes and they spend the best part of a year watching someone who's kind of on their radar, because there's only, I think, 35 of us in the UK across all sports that are fully branded Red Bull athletes.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: So it's pretty hard to get a spot.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Obviously, the helmet's a big winner because they can really brand me.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Um, so that's that certainly helped one of the perks of being a goalie.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: Um, and yeah, and I generally use the product as part of my matchday routines, and they sign me just before the Europeans in London.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and I swear Red Bull have got this like habit of like nailing when someone's gonna have a it's like they've got some sort of like futuristic reader in the back office, like they've got an algorithm just going, yeah, like she's gonna go, yeah, sign her.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Because honestly, from that moment, I like they're like, we gave you the wings.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: Well, of course it is.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh they're awesome.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: It's I'm not just saying this, they are a sponsor like no other.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Um, I feel so lucky to have had them as part of my family, and even like off the back of my retirement, I'm gonna continue to work with them, continue to be an athlete for them for another year or so, and then kind of um also break out into other opportunities within within Red Bull themselves.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: So it's really, really cool.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: They're just part of a family.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: Um, it's like awesome things like the WhatsApp group.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: The names in this WhatsApp group, I'm like, the fact that I'm even on this WhatsApp list with some of these names is mad.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: We always get an athlete summit every year where we have a gathering.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: This year we're off to Silverstone for the four days for the F1.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: Um, last year they all got flown out.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: I got missed this.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: That's the only thing is finally I'm free to actually say yes to go to some stuff, but they got kind of flown out to Switzerland to the head uh Red Bull headquarters, um, spent four days over there kind of playing with all the toys and just having a whale of a time.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Um, and they just ultimately will open any door that they think is going to help us grow as an athlete.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: There's no reason why they can't do anything for you if you believe if they, you know, if you convince them that this will help me go on and win medals, they're willing to try.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: Um I mean, I have I have two follow-up questions.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: One is one is for you, one is for you.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: First of all, on this WhatsApp group, who's the most famous person on there?
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Um, well, Trent, Alexander, Arnold, I guess.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's pr that's pretty big time.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: And I just I just sorry, I just you did the whole time Maddie was talking, then were you hoping that Red Bull are in that year looking at you?
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Oh I drink a shitload of Red Bull, so I I hope they were.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: They've got eyes everywhere, you just keep going.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: You just gotta keep believing.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: I'm the biggest promoter of the yellow one, the tropical one.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: No, that's where you're going wrong.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: It's all about the original.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: That's the that's the selling can.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Get on the original stuff.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: The tropical's lovely, but no.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Well, if if if your sponsor is listening, let them know that that like there's a lanky guy who drinks a shitload of red bull.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: Happily with a helmet.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: I don't care.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Just sponsor me.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: This is also leads quite nicely into one of the other questions that someone someone wrote in.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: Mark Prince asked, What's the best spirit to go with a Red Bull?
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Best spirit, vodka, 100%.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, vodka Red Bull.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: I had to say, like when I first obviously signed with them, I I was still at uni.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Was I still at uni?
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, sort of, I can't remember.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: All right, I was definitely drinking Red Bull and Jaeger on a night out.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what's that?
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: Is what was that called again?
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: I've I've got yeah, Jaegerms, God, I'm so old.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Um and uh and I remember thinking I've lit I that's gotta stop because my brain on match day just doesn't know what's going on.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: Like, is it a party?
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Are we going out to play?
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Um, so obviously the sacrifice was no more Jager Bombs for me.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: No more Volka, no more Yega.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Sensible choices.
- 38:26SPEAKER_03: That's a great question, though.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: That's the type of question we want on this podcast.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 38:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, that does sound, I mean, you've you've pretty much explained that incredibly well as to how cool it is to be a Red Bull athlete, and probably made every every hockey player out there pretty jealous that that that invitation's out there to go at least as well to the F1.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: Jesus, that's gonna be that's gonna be cool.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: I know four days mental.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really excited.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Happy I can actually go because most of the time I miss out because obviously playing hockey.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: Um, so the fact that I'm even still a Red Bull athlete despite my retirement, I thought they'd kick me out meanly.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: Um, keeping me for another year, hanging around, get to go to all the parties this year.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and they're just awesome.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm not just saying that, they are legit one of the most incredible brands, just so much more than a sponsor.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: I think you guys know that sometimes you can just get people that want you to do things for them in return for a paycheck.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: You know, they're not asked, they just literally want the best out of us as athletes, and that's a cool thing.
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: That's awesome, right?
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: Into some maybe a couple of nitty-doop nitty-gritties for you.
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: Okay, so people have asked who's your favorite and least favourite players.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: So I want maybe favourite and least favourite women's player, and then favourite and least favourite men's player.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: I guess you can't say Brendan or Yup.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Why not?
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: Okay, you can say you.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I guess I guess we'll go yeah, but that that was hardest and player to play with.
- 39:58SPEAKER_03: It's just maybe let's go with like current who's your favourite current player to watch, or uh who's your favorite who's someone you got into.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: Do you ever get into it into it with any of the uh strikers?
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Come on, like we we name and shame Aussies.
- 40:13SPEAKER_03: You basically makes an enemy for himself every week.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: It's it's a fun time.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: Uh I don't think that really happens though.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: I don't, you know, like the shit around you that's happening in the men's stuff, it just doesn't happen in the women's.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Well, finally, we see why you are with Brendan.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: Brendan's always also always on the fence.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, it doesn't happen.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: I'm legit being honest.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be honest.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: No, I'm not I just don't see it because I'm stood by myself at the back.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: I'm 100% sure.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: You girls are also a bunch of bitches in the field.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: I'm 100% sure.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: There's not anyone that you're like, oh I just don't like her, even even an irrational dislike.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Um someone in in like training who hits the ball on goal like for way to close, way too hard at you, and like always gets in your like gets on a useful.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: I have to say, I'm gonna have to name and shame Tess Howard here because yeah, here we go.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Tess.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: Brendan, you can just gotta give it a little push, and then finally it will come back.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Well, now I've got more clarity on the question.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: I'm happy to answer it.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: She just gotta help out a little bit with like clearing this up.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: So thanks you for pointing me in the right direction.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: Tess knows that she gets on my nerves or did again no longer have to be a part of this.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh yeah, Tess, oh my god, there's just no need to twat it from two yards out at my head in training every day.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: And I know everyone's like, well, in the game, they'll still do it, but it's bullshit.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: You just don't have the time and space to do that.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: It's just not okay.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: So Tess has uh got to be one of my least favorite people to uh train with.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: No, oh, you're making me feel bad.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: Maybe I no, that's that's I think that's a fair answer because we had this at Shit or Hit the other week, and we said strikers who whack the balls at goalies from three yards.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: I was firmly against it because I'm like, if you know, you're probably just gonna like push it in the corner and you know you score, and there's always that one person who just decides whatever happens, I'm just gonna slam this as hard as I can through the keeper.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: 100%, and no thought, yeah.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: But that's the thing.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: If you do just push it in the goddamn corner, you'll score.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: Like, just think about what you're doing.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: I said hit though, just because I know I heard that's where you that's what you guys signed up for.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: Take it's the job, take it or leave it.
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 42:41SPEAKER_03: Okay, some nice who's your okay, who's your favorite um men's player?
- 42:45SPEAKER_03: And surely you have to watch a lot of you supporting Brendan now, and maybe supporting you as well.
- 42:49SPEAKER_03: Who's who's your favorite like men's player to watch that can't be you or Brendan?
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: Sorry, it can be you, but come on, it's not you.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: Favourite men's player.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: Can I say a goalie or not?
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, actually, that's better, probably.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, I I think I think um Vinny Van Ash is uh is amazing.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: I do, and um yeah, I think he's so good.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: I don't really have anything else to say about it.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: I just think he's class, I just think he's above everyone, and and to be fair, before Davey Hart stops, he was without doubt one of my absolute idols.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Again, I just think for such a tall guy, he plays an amazing level for someone who should be like shit with his feet for being that tall.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: So he's I think like they're both very different style goalies, but I've really like enjoyed watching them play of their careers and still like Davy.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: I look forward to like if they're playing, I'm always inclined to watch Campong just because he's in goal.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I think what Vinny has done at Belgium, it does help with that team he has around him for sure.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: Um, but he is awesome.
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: So okay, and someone else actually did ask what um who's who do you think the best female goalie at the moment is?
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: And you can't say yourself because you've retired now, even though we do talk about you won Commonwealth.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Gold last summer was smashing it, was in the form of your life, and then you've obviously stopped.
- 44:05SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, are you just trying to give other people a chance?
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's a few, there's a couple of questions there.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Um, best female goalie right now.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm quite excited to see where um is it Joycelyn Bartram, the the Aussie goalie.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Um, she's new on the scene off the back of obviously Rachel Lynch retired not that long ago, and she was amazing.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: Um, and kind of like this the long-term number one there.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: So Joyce Joycelyn is I was quite impressed with her at the World Cup.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: Actually, I thought she was awesome.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: Um, so I think for someone so new onto the scene, it's quite impressive what she's doing already.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: So I'd be keen to see how how much better she can get for Joyce at the minute, it's probably up there for me.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: Um were there more questions there?
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: I can't remember.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: No, I think that was it.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: I think I was just being nice.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: Just trying to get back on your good side, that's all.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: You're there.
- 45:00SPEAKER_03: You but I'll open it to you before we go to shit or hit.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: Have you got any any questions for Maddie or any points, or are you um happy to go to some shit or hit?
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm always happy to go to some shit or hits.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: Um I'm just in uh but it's a maybe it's too big of a discussion to like get into now.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: But um in Holland there's like a big discussion coming up with like um uh the paying of the of the female players and the men's players.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: There's like a big gap within that, uh, in which men's are paid more than women uh within the hockey sport.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: Um and they're like kind of it's kind of in on the it's also the time right now in which that comes up more, but like I don't know how you guys I think with England it's pretty even, or even I think the women's get more, or I don't know how that works, but like in Holland it's like a big discussion right now in the Hofklaster that like women are asking, and rightfully so asking the question like how is it possible that yeah, that there's such a big gap?
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: And I don't know if you got like something like that you took something away from it, or that you were like, I think it's a good discussion, or you think no, I don't get it.
- 46:15SPEAKER_00: Like I'm curious about what you think about it.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: Was that a question for me?
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's it's it's pointing to you.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: I don't give a shit what Phil thinks.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: I want to know what you think.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, I think it's been a really interesting topic.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: I've obviously saw what the Dutch girls were kind of saying over here, and I think it's really awesome that they're kind of standing their ground on it.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: I do, it's one of those, isn't it?
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: Like, we do need to start saying something because the more I think about it, the more I think it's absolute bullshit the situation.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: It's true, like that I could come to say a club like Tilburg and ultimately I do not earn what some of the foreign men's players were also earning on the opposite side.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: It's just how it is, but it's almost just accepted, and I'm like the rest of us, just kind of get on with it because the women's wage is the women's wage and the men's wage is the men's wage, but why?
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: And I think it has like constantly sprung up as to why, like, what is the justifiable reasons to it?
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: In England, it's absolutely the same and has been.
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: I remember when I first went to Holcombe, it was a saying the women were on X, the men were on X, but the women were the most watched teams at the time, they were the most noticeable names.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would earn three times less than my male equivalent in the men's squad.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: So it's like it's a hundred percent just been a common problem for years.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: And now finally people are saying stuff, but it's like, what is it actually going to take to make a difference or to just you know to start changing these things?
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: And I'm very aware of some of the like the male salaries over in here in Holland compared to the women's, and we couldn't even ask for that sort of money.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: No, no, and that's that that's why, and I think uh like the the the stupid thing is like in in when you compare it to like basketball or like MBA, you're talking about revenue, or you're talking about like uh TV deals, uh sponsor deals, uh shirts that are getting sold and stuff like that.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: We don't deal with it, like hockey isn't like 99% based on um sponsoring sponsorships.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: It's so um Lily Owsley's just come out, I think, in England, and I think it was Maria for sure who did it in Holland and like making making waves, and it's it's something that needs to happen.
- 48:16SPEAKER_03: I think the the question is you've kind of hit the nail on the head.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's not anything to do with where the money's made, it's where it's who's sponsoring.
- 48:25SPEAKER_03: And is it up to the big rich fat cat who where the money goes?
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: Is that because that's the thing I am intrigued to know?
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: Because you said, like, if a company puts X into this or a person puts X into a club, do they have a say on where that money goes?
- 48:42SPEAKER_03: And is that why?
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: Do they say I want to sponsor 50,000 euros to Tilburg women?
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: Or do I like it's it's just how it gets split, and it's the same in England because we have the same issues, but like I don't understand how it would work in an English club either.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: No, I think it's I think it's still and that uh like it's a it's a sponsor deal.
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: Like it you you sponsor the club, I think, in 99, and again, I don't really know, but it's like 99% of the the case.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: I think a sponsor sponsors the club, uh, and they sponsor the like the main teams, and we can that's what we say the Vandal teams, like the first teams, that's what that's who they sponsor.
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: Like all the salaries of all the players in all of Holland, in all of the Hoofklaster, male or female, comes from sponsorships.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: It's not from money earned.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: A club, there's not a club, almost not a club, that earns money.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: They rely on sponsors and like companies that are willing to give money to hockey for some like uh uh attention in like like a like a sign next to the field or like a like a like a shirt sponsor.
- 49:49SPEAKER_00: So I think that's what makes it weird.
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: And I think Maria Verschole actually asked the right question.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: I don't they they don't say that they just don't know, like we're guessing, they are guessing.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: So it's there's no clear the the thing you said is the exact question they asked, and I don't know if they got a response to be honest.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: And I'm not in contact with with either one of them, but like I think at least there should be some openness in what what is happening behind the scenes.
- 50:13SPEAKER_00: Where is the money that comes in?
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: Where is it going to?
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: Is is it like let's say Abi and Umblo, like a big bank in Holland, is giving 100,000 euros and saying 80 has to go to the men, 20 has to go to women.
- 50:24SPEAKER_00: Well, then you have then you have your answer.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: But if it's like okay, here's 100,000 money, do whatever you want with it, then it's a really easy problem to solve, my opinion.
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: But like I was just curious because and Maddie has played a lot in Holland, and I know she's probably it's not a secret in Holland that there's such a big pay gap.
- 50:43SPEAKER_00: So I was we're just curious what you guys thought, or what at least Maddie thought of it.
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I'm as confused as everyone else as to why we're in the situation that we are.
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: I think, and it's great that we're making a stance, but you're right, until we have the answers to those questions, we don't really know why.
- 50:59SPEAKER_01: And I think it's just then a level of like that's how it is.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: So, like if a male international player comes to a club, their baseline expectation to be paid is X.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: And the same for a woman, like you'd be embarrassed to come in and say, hey, I want this amount of money, because you'd probably think I can't get it from the get-go, because that's just how what we think is the amount for the women and what the men think is the amount for the men.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: I guess it's just like we've done it for so many years that everyone's kind of just basing it off what you know, rumors are such or hearsay.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: So I can earn X as a female player in Holland, or I can earn X as a female player in England.
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: But until someone kind of challenges that sort of status and says, Well, hang on, I'm not doing that unless you pay me.
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: Well, uh in until we know, because again, it's such a private thing.
- 51:44SPEAKER_01: It's all just like we don't really know what everyone's on, but we what we do know for sure is there's a gap.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: Um isn't that weird?
- 51:51SPEAKER_03: Isn't that a weird patent that we have in in hockey as well?
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, so is it like a case of we just get every single player in the world to publicly announce what their salaries are?
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: So we can actually get to the bottom of this and be like, well, I told you, or actually it's all, you know, I don't know.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: I don't know what the quick solution is, but at least we're talking about it.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: But I think we have to I think you're right until we fully understand who is making the decision because someone is, or is it just the clubs go, well, look, we know a male player will come in and expect this because he's a male player, and we'll know a female player will come in and expect this, so we can have a rough estimate of where our budgets are gonna go, and they're not even dictating that.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: And as players, we're actually getting it wrong by coming in and not, you know, getting the figures right from the start.
- 52:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: That's the hard bit.
- 52:32SPEAKER_03: I like Maddie's idea, is that we we somehow all get together and we disclose our our our wages, and then suddenly everyone can go, oh well, okay.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: Let's like because there is so much hearsay in hockey, and I I'm absolutely certain that what is being said is true, but it's just to what level would be I would be really, really, really intrigued about because someone always says, Oh, this bloke's on a hundred grand a year.
- 53:00SPEAKER_03: Now I very, very much doubt that.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: Like there there is there is just there is just so much rumors, and it would be excellent to have a sheet of paper with lots of lots of figures on, and then you the disparity starts becoming clear, and then the conversations become easier and easier.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: I think the biggest thing is what I say.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: I think the biggest thing is knowing the money that comes in, who decides where it goes, and what's like the what's the the idea behind it?
- 53:29SPEAKER_00: Idea.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: I idea.
- 53:32SPEAKER_00: Idea.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm learning, Phil.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: Like what's that?
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: What's the idea?
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: That's that's the whole that's the whole thing.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: And I think that's that's that's and and and credit to them.
- 53:44SPEAKER_00: I think that's what Maria and Yosine at least asked.
- 53:46SPEAKER_00: Like, we just want an open conversation, like, where does the money go?
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we've had a good discussion.
- 53:52SPEAKER_03: I think is a very, very like well brought up.
- 53:55SPEAKER_03: I think we've we've pushed it around.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: We need to see where it's gonna land.
- 53:59SPEAKER_01: On the next pod, I think you should declose disclose your salary, uh Holcomb.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: Fair.
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna discuss it?
- 54:07SPEAKER_00: We can agree on one thing is that whatever Phil gets, he gets way too much for what he's worth.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: Shit, shit or hit, guys.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 54:19SPEAKER_03: I can make a smooth transition here because I my Phil's salary, shit or hit£100,000, shit or hit.
- 54:35SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 54:35SPEAKER_03: First of all, okay, there's a couple of goalie ones.
- 54:39SPEAKER_03: Goalie shit or hits for you, Maddie.
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: And for and for you.
- 54:43SPEAKER_03: Keepers slapping their pads fee Hemsworth wants to know.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: Um shit.
- 54:52SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm all for the subtle approach, me.
- 54:57SPEAKER_01: I know it's for some people's vibe, but it's not mine.
- 55:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, actually, it's it's actually it's such a good one because I hate the keepers who slap their pads or whack all the posts like really loud.
- 55:07SPEAKER_03: It's like, why are you doing that?
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: What was that?
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: What are we getting out of this?
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: Whatever it takes, Ropes, whatever it takes.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: Obviously, working because you're thinking about it.
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, true.
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: If you was a goalie, that's what he'd do, I think.
- 55:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100%.
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: I'd be the I'd be the noisy one.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: I had I had this Sunday at Seven Nash had to take a stroke, and right before he was like going to take it, I yelled at Piermin, you know where he's going to flick it, you know where he's going.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: Piermin had no clue where he was where he was going to flick it.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: Piramin was guessing and he scored.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: And he ran past me and he like gave me a little smile, like, ah ha ha motherfucker.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I'd be the one, but I'd be the goalie who'd like slap his shit really hard, or like before a corner, be like all big and then like get not naked.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: I've always struggled with goalies that are the ones that celebrate saves, or yeah, just the big personalities.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: Because I'm like, you're just setting yourself up for a failure here.
- 56:05SPEAKER_01: Like if you've got all that act and then you go get Meg's or you let in a shocker.
- 56:10SPEAKER_00: Fanash celebrates his saves though.
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: He does, but the thing is he gets away with it because he stops so many fucking balls.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: And he's the most humble guy there is in the and he is, and I think that's it.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: I think if you can come off the pitch and you're well known to be just a generally nice guy, you get away with it.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: But if people don't know you yet and you're starting that game early, good luck.
- 56:28SPEAKER_03: People people know who George Penner is, don't they?
- 56:34SPEAKER_00: He's not me.
- 56:35SPEAKER_00: He cartwheels, right?
- 56:37SPEAKER_00: He celebrated by doing a cartwheel something.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: Well, I saw I saw a highlight from him this weekend doing a knee slide in the opposite direction of his team when they won a shootout or something.
- 56:46SPEAKER_01: And I text his wife and was like, come on.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: Great shit.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: That was a redo.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: I think I'd love to.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: If he's getting um, you know, hits on on social media, we'll take it all at this point.
- 57:00SPEAKER_03: Um also, but that did that was exactly what happened this weekend.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: Sorry, we got panned 5-1, but like he's giving it the biggin, and then our flicker megs him, and it's a bit like ah, yeah.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he just to be fair to George, he's just like, yeah, he's been doing it.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: So at least he's been consistent with it, he's never changed.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: So I have to give him credit for that in the in the World Cup.
- 57:20SPEAKER_00: He also had like this tweet like England has hasn't conceded a goal in like 200 something minutes, and then two minutes after, like, no, it's a sore subject film, but then Germany scored two within the minutes.
- 57:32SPEAKER_00: I thought that was pretty funny to be honest.
- 57:38SPEAKER_03: Next one, big hook goalie sticks.
- 57:42SPEAKER_01: Shit.
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: Goalie sticks that are designed like that.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm surprised they're even still being made, to be honest.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, there's no need for the big hook, unless it's a shootout stick, then there's a purpose to the big hook.
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: Or for that life.
- 57:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't think we can really comment on that one, you I think we're out.
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: Uh Luke shit, but it's all I can see.
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's yeah, I'll go with that one as well.
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: Um the Maddie, you're you're famous on Instagram, you put the banana holder.
- 58:11SPEAKER_03: You did you see?
- 58:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a good shit or hit to be fair.
- 58:15SPEAKER_00: It's a good shit ahead, but I had to I gotta be completely honest.
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: I was really doubting what that what the purpose of that thing was for a while.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: I was waiting for you to comment on that.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was just like, what are you posting on your socials, man?
- 58:29SPEAKER_00: Like, come on, it's a bit personal, but then it's really I didn't know something like that uh existed.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: So you had me a little bit flabbergasted, to be honest.
- 58:39SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 58:41SPEAKER_01: Well, it's it's it went down as a hit, by the way.
- 58:43SPEAKER_01: I meant to share the uh the overall full results, and it was I think 65% per hit.
- 58:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, there's a lot of idiots out there.
- 58:52SPEAKER_03: No, because you're super useful.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: I take a banana every game and every training session, and it's happened too many times where it gets squashed.
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: So I was like, okay, I'm I'm I'm in with my boot bag and my banana holder.
- 59:06SPEAKER_03: I'm having a good session.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you I'll come drop one.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: You've I'll I've got two.
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: I'll come, I'll drop one round.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: Send me your address.
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: No, and no, oh, oh, I'll tell you my address.
- 59:17SPEAKER_00: Don't bring the banana holder.
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: Right, my last my last shit is something that uh I discussed with my friend the other day when we're out for lunch.
- 59:26SPEAKER_03: So the concept of tipping, okay, at a restaurant.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm fine with it, but just if you think about it, it's a really weird concept.
- 59:35SPEAKER_03: You're paying someone to do do like a mediocre to good job.
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: And we were just joking that like imagine finishing a game of hockey and then going around the crowd with a tip jar.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: Like, it's it's a bit of a crazy concept, isn't it?
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: It's like, well done, you did your job, and like I thought I thought you were gonna say go tip the umpires and like and then rate there.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: They fucking owe us money, um, after a game.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: They will never get a cent out of me, motherfuckers.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: But all I wanna say is that's that's Phil.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: Just you say, Yeah, I don't have a problem with it, I get, but then you do have a problem with it.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_03: No, actually, okay.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: So when we went out for lunch and they they add the 12.5% service charge, and they make you order on the table without actually having face-to-face contact, and all they have to do is bring you your food, and then they add the 12.5% tip.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_03: There was just we had a laugh about it, saying, like, yeah, this seems this seems a bit silly.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: And if I had a good game of hockey, it'd be weird me going to the crowd with a tip jar being like, Do you think I'll play well?
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_03: Is this okay?
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: I think you should try.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: Just I think you should just go with like bring your head or like make your head bend into like a bandana and just go around asking for money.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: No, I think I think it's also shit.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_00: I don't I always feel like uh it's obliged correct English.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I always feel obliged to give a tip, and I never know what to like because the thing is, you can better not tip than cheap tip.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: I think sometimes I just I always feel shit to tip so little that so then just give like a little bigger tip, but then I think I could just if I don't tip, he he probably won't even care because in Holland is not that big to tip.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: I always do it.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: It's a shitty concept.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: You you get salary.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_00: If you don't agree with your salary, go work somewhere else.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, go do somewhere something else.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_00: Maddie.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_01: That's what all the female hockey players are thinking at the minute.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_00: I I thought I thought it, you said it.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, this has been a strange second half to this episode.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: We went we kind of kind of jokey, then we went really serious.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: But it's um time to wrap up, Maddie.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_03: Like you've been an absolute star.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much for coming on and replacing Brendan.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: We will happily do this again sometime, I can tell you that for free.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: From normally me having to pause the podcast and have a go at these two choppers.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_03: This has been a this has been a a walk in the park.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: You're very well here.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: It's very very nice to be on here, guys.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, I it's a bit annoying that it takes a massive mass announcement to get onto this thing.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: I've been waiting for my call-up.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: You guys hate goalies so much, I thought it'd never come.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: So I had to retire to get the call-up, but you're welcome.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_00: No, you make us question our hate for goalies, Maddie.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_00: That's the biggest compliment we can give you.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_00: No, we don't we don't hate God.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_00: We just like to poke fun at you because you are you guys are a little bit mental standing in a goal, flicking balls, taking balls 150 miles an hour at you.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: At least gotta give me that.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm not denying that.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: I'm not denying that, but the hate on your show for the goalies makes it very hard to tune in every week.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_03: That is a great way to end.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_03: That's the review I want to leave on that on like on a website, please.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: Can you leave that on Apple Podcasts?
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: Anyone want to leave us a review?
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_03: The hate for goalies makes it really hard to tune in every week.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_00: I'll make sure in honor of you, Mary, that every week from now on I'll give a little love to the goalies to like make up for the all the hate.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_00: I do want to also tell the story um with um Mary.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: I want to thank her again for bringing my sticks to Holland because um apparently Y1 send them to Phil.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_00: Phil gave them to Mary and Mary sent them to me.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_00: I've said, and that's I also forgot we were recording tonight, so that says a lot about me.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_00: Um I said to Medi, I think, five times that I was going to pick up her sticks.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: And at least five times I forgot that I was picking up the sticks.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_00: So I want to thank you again.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_00: I know you you're probably really used to being patient and like dealing with an idiot uh being in a relationship with Brandon for already four years, but again, I wanted to like take this moment to thank you for yeah, taking my sticks.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_01: You're very welcome.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_00: And I still owe you, and I still owe her a coffee.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_01: Indeed.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_00: I also forgot to bring
