- 0:11Greetings friends on this, the third Thursday in November,
- 0:17which of course you will all recognise as the UNESCO World
- 0:21Philosophy Day, where we are encouraged to think and engage
- 0:26in free and reasoned and informed thinking.
- 0:30Ah yes, philosophy. I don't know how philosophical
- 0:35you are friends, but what a cracker of an idea UNESCO says.
- 0:39Do you know what? This one day every year, let's
- 0:42not just get bogged down in the the echo chamber in which we
- 0:46live and all the different thoughtless voices that yabber
- 0:49on and yell at us, but let's take a moment to think deeply
- 0:53and to speak from our hearts, using our minds, engaging with
- 0:58each other's thoughts. And in an ever polarising world,
- 1:02that sounds like an outstanding idea.
- 1:04So today I encourage you to have some fantastic philosophical
- 1:08discussions. What are the big issues that are
- 1:11bouncing around in your head and your heart at the moment?
- 1:14Find a trusted person and open up a dialogue.
- 1:18Let us see what we can do as we share ourselves and our thoughts
- 1:21with each other in an open and inclusive way today.
- 1:25Thank you, UNESCO, what an excellent idea.
- 1:29And today we will do that, opening up God's Word and seeing
- 1:33what the living God of the universe has to say to us, to
- 1:37inspire us as we hear of challenging times in the early
- 1:41church, as this message brings about its opposition and we see
- 1:47how this community manages it. You ready?
- 1:51Yes, let's put aside our deep philosophical thoughts, open up
- 1:54our hearts to hear what the God of philosophy and the God of the
- 1:58universe has to say to us as we read together Acts chapter 12.
- 2:13About that time, King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some
- 2:17believers in the church. He had the apostle James, John's
- 2:21brother, killed with a sword. When Herod saw how much this
- 2:25pleased the Jewish people, he also arrested Peter.
- 2:29This took place during the Passover celebration.
- 2:32Then he imprisoned him, placing him under the guard of four
- 2:36squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring Peter
- 2:40out for public trial after the Passover, but while Peter was in
- 2:44prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him.
- 2:48The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was asleep,
- 2:52fastened with two chains between two soldiers.
- 2:56Others stood guard at the prison gate.
- 2:58Suddenly there was a bright light in the cell and the Angel
- 3:03of the Lord stood before Peter. The angels struck him on the
- 3:07side to awaken him and said, quick get up and the chains fell
- 3:12off his wrists. Then the Angel told him, get
- 3:16dressed and put on your sandals, and he did.
- 3:20Now put on your coat and follow me.
- 3:22The Angel ordered. So Peter left the cell, followed
- 3:26the Angel but all the time he thought it was a vision he
- 3:30didn't realise it was actually happening.
- 3:32They passed the 1st and 2nd guard posts and came to the iron
- 3:36gate leading to the city and this opened for them all by
- 3:40itself. So they passed through and
- 3:42started walking down the street and then the Angel suddenly left
- 3:47him. Peter finally came to his
- 3:49senses. It's really true, he said.
- 3:52The Lord has sent his Angel and saved me from Herod and from
- 3:56what the Jewish leaders had planned to do with me.
- 3:59When he realised this, he went to the home of Mary, the mother
- 4:02of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer.
- 4:05He knocked at the door in the gate and the servant girl named
- 4:09Rhoda came to open it. When she recognised Peter's
- 4:12voice, she was so overjoyed that instead of opening the door, she
- 4:16ran back inside and told everyone.
- 4:18Peter is standing at the door. You're out of your mind, they
- 4:22said. When she insisted, they decided
- 4:26it must be his Angel. Meanwhile, Peter continued
- 4:29knocking. When they finally opened the
- 4:32door and saw him, they were amazed.
- 4:35He motioned for them to quiet down and told them how the Lord
- 4:38had led him out of prison. Tell James and the other
- 4:41brothers what happened, he said. And then he went to another
- 4:45place. At dawn there was a great
- 4:47commotion among the soldiers about what had happened to
- 4:50Peter. Herod Agrippa ordered a thorough
- 4:53search for him. When he couldn't be found, Herod
- 4:56interrogated the guards and sentenced them to death.
- 5:01Afterward Herod left Judea to stay in Caesarea for a while.
- 5:06Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, so
- 5:10they sent a delegation to make peace with him because their
- 5:13cities were dependent upon Herod's country for food.
- 5:17The delegates won the support of Blastus, Herod's personal
- 5:20assistant, and an appointment with Herod was granted.
- 5:24When the day arrived, Herod put on his royal robes, sat on his
- 5:29throne, and made a speech to them.
- 5:32The people gave him a great ovation, shouting It's the voice
- 5:36of a God, not of a man. Instantly an Angel of the Lord
- 5:41struck Herod with a sickness because he accepted the people's
- 5:45worship instead of giving the glory to God.
- 5:48So he was consumed with worms and died.
- 5:52Meanwhile, the word of God continued to spread, and there
- 5:56were many new believers. When Barnabas and Saul had
- 6:00finished their mission to Jerusalem, they returned, taking
- 6:04John Mark with them. Our Lord, thank you that you are
- 6:18a God who loves us that yes, even though you are a God who
- 6:24commands all the creation and you are an enormous unending God
- 6:31of the universe, you love us, You love me, You love each
- 6:36person. Praying right now together with
- 6:38me and Lord. Just like Peter found himself in
- 6:43an impossible situation, ready to be tried and probably
- 6:48executed by the authorities of the day, you against all odds
- 6:53create this incredible way for him to walk free.
- 7:00My Lord, we might find ourselves in some really difficult
- 7:03situations, situations that we feel like there's no way out of,
- 7:07situations where we feel trapped and entirely unable to be
- 7:13liberated. But you are a Redeemer.
- 7:16You are a Liberator, and you are a God who loves your people and
- 7:21who wants to use us to great effect to expand and bring about
- 7:25your Kingdom on earth. So, Lord, I pray that you give
- 7:30us hope that as we find ourselves in impossible
- 7:34situations, that we can trust and know that you are a God who
- 7:37is bigger than any challenge we face, any incarceration that our
- 7:43physical, emotional, mental, or social situation might
- 7:47encounter. And thank you, Lord, that you
- 7:52and your rule over all things extends to our lives.
- 7:58Our Lord, I pray that you would create the spaces and the
- 8:02abilities in our day to day lives that we could further your
- 8:06Kingdom, and that the power of your love and forgiveness as it
- 8:10transforms us could also transform our corners of the
- 8:14world through us as your agents. We love you and we're so
- 8:19grateful that you choose to step into time and space in our lives
- 8:25to make a difference. So we worship you and we thank
- 8:28you, and we pray all of this in your mighty name.
- 8:32I'm in.
