- 0:03Speaker 1: It was December twenty fifth, nineteen fourteen, only five months
- 0:08Speaker 1: into World War One. German, British and French soldiers, already
- 0:12Speaker 1: weary of senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and fraternized with
- 0:16Speaker 1: enemy combatants along the Western Front. Kloime ron Edwards on
- 0:20Speaker 1: Today's page from the Edward's Notebook. Despite the threat of
- 0:23Speaker 1: severe punishment from their superiors, German soldiers held up Christmas
- 0:26Speaker 1: trees out of the trenches with Merry Christmas signs. Thousands
- 0:29Speaker 1: of troops streamed across a no man's land strewn with
- 0:32Speaker 1: rotting corpses. They sang Christmas carols, and because of the
- 0:36Speaker 1: impact of Christ's Loved Christmas, soldiers embraced one another who
- 0:40Speaker 1: just hours before were trying to kill each other. They
- 0:42Speaker 1: even agreed to warn each other if the top brass
- 0:45Speaker 1: forced them to fire their weapons again. Generals on all
- 0:49Speaker 1: sides declared that spontaneous Christmas inspired peacemaking was treasonous and
- 0:53Speaker 1: subject to a court martial. By March nineteen fifteen, the
- 0:57Speaker 1: fatternization movement had been erratically and the killing was back
- 1:01Speaker 1: in full operation. By the time of armistice in nineteen eighteen,
- 1:05Speaker 1: fifteen million would be slaughtered as we celebrate Christmas once again.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I look forward to the day when the peace and
- 1:13Speaker 1: goodwill inspired by the birth of Jesus will be a
- 1:16Speaker 1: permanent gift we give to one another. I'm run Edwards.
