- 0:07The New York Giants face the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for Game 1 of the 1937 World Series on October 6th.
- 0:14This is the NBC Radio broadcast of Game 1 featuring announcers Tom Manning, Red Barber, and Warren Brown.
- 0:21Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen of the United States. This is George Hicks, the national broadcasting company.
- 0:29This is the World Series of 1937. We're speaking from our box directly behind home plate on the lip of the third tier at Yankee Stadium in New York City.
- 0:41But you fans don't need to have me tell you what this is all about.
- 0:45It's the New York Yankees World Champions of 1936, again tennis winners this year in the American League,
- 0:52versus the New York Giants, National League Champions of 1937 and for the World Championship in baseball.
- 1:00And this is the fifth World Series since the beginning in 1905 between the two New York teams.
- 1:08Well, we've been in our chairs since 11 a.m. this morning, now 1.15.
- 1:14The bleachers bending in an irregular curve from middle left field around to middle right were packed solid on our arrival this morning.
- 1:23And the third tier of moderate-type reserve seats were also packed at that time, except the extreme tips at left and right field, and now they're filling up.
- 1:33The expensive boxes and first-layer tier are now filled practically except for the last moment arrivals.
- 1:40There must easily be 50,000 or a little more here now before game starts and they're still pouring in.
- 1:48NBC has its baseball experts manning the microphones.
- 1:53Tom Manning, NBC sports announcer from Cleveland, one of the best.
- 1:59Well, he'll describe the first half of the game.
- 2:02Beside him is Brett Barber, star sports announcer from station WLW in Cincinnati. Both, by the way, are redheaded.
- 2:11So remember when the action gets hot, these two redheaded flashes will be throwing the words at you.
- 2:17And with them is Warren Brown, the friendly and wise ball expert, sports editor of the Chicago Herald Examiner.
- 2:25He'll give you the expert opinion, the inside facts that only he knows.
- 2:30So much for what's to come. Right now, the Yanks are just potting in off the diamonds.
- 2:35The Cat-Takers are out with their rakes and the chalk line, the manicuring, which goes on just before the game starts.
- 2:43It's just about 10 minutes now that photographers are flashing bulbs at the first row box seat where all the celebrities are seated.
- 2:51It's so muggy today, incidentally, that they're using flash bulbs.
- 2:56The Giants are now coming into their dugout. The weather is humid, whether this is October 6 or not.
- 3:04Perspiration is running off our faces, and the bleachers are in short sleeves, making that white background.
- 3:11It rained last night here in New York, but now the sky is a pale blue with those low steamy clouds breaking and floating right over our heads
- 3:20and the pennants up on top of the horseshoe. It's moist, it's thick, and it's hot out here, but I'm sure it won't rain.
- 3:28Mayor LaClarga is here, Vicki Cochran, the old Mike of Detroit, looking fit again, and the babe, Geno.
- 3:35He was wiping his face a moment ago in a blue shirt suit, sits in a box right down below us beside the Yankee dugout.
- 3:42With him is Mrs. Rood and his daughter, Jacob Rupert.
- 3:46Geno, handsome, smiling with Mayor LaClarga. Mr. Rupert stood and took hands with the babe while the photographers took their pictures.
- 3:55Cheers and excitement, the comments, running like fire through the stands, have been egging us on since noon when the audience follows
- 4:04Dimacho, Gary, Vicki, Selkirk, Moore, and Ott, all the sluggers as they drop their long drives into either left or right field stands.
- 4:14The Giants today are the visitors. They're in gray with bright azure blue caps, blue church sleeves and socks.
- 4:22The Yanks have fights with dark blue caps and socks.
- 4:26The crowd got a terrific howl a few moments ago when Gomez put a long punch into the right field stand.
- 4:34At batting practice about 1230 when the Giants came in, Hubbell got a fine hand when he came to bat.
- 4:40The best he could do was to ground to the infield. The crowd also cheered young Jack McCarthy, first baseman of the Giants,
- 4:48when he put several long drives into right field stands.
- 4:51And they said, well, look at who we got here, as much as they, well, this boy is right up there with Gary and Dimacho.
- 4:59A quarter of a mile away on the top of the apartment roof, which are jagged in modernistic style,
- 5:08are the apartment roof galleryites who pay no ticket and who get a very much of a bird's eye view of the entire scene.
- 5:18Hub is now down behind home plate on the Giants side, warming up, taking his time, wipes his head with his shirt sleeve,
- 5:26puts his old left arm across, and there's the ball. Gomez is doing the same thing on the Yankee side.
- 5:33Photographers are squatted around them, and the caretakers are now laying out their chalk marks around home plate and the batter's boxes.
- 5:42Attention, please.
- 5:44The band is playing in center field.
- 5:47People, standing in the aisles, please make your seats.
- 5:53We pause for a moment for the last speaker announcement, which sets for the people in the aisles to please take their seats.
- 5:58It's just minutes now before the beginning of history in baseball for 1937.
- 6:04The green stands are packed, red, white, and blue bunting on all sides, excitement growing, and now that's the general scene.
- 6:12Let's get down to what this really means.
- 6:14Beside me is Warren Brown that I spoke to you about. Warren, come on and give us the facts about 1937.
- 6:22All right, George, this is really the most exciting series, or I anticipate that it will be the most exciting series,
- 6:30of the sort of a traditional rivalry that has grown up between the New York Giants and the New York Yankees.
- 6:37As you have been told, or perhaps know already, this is the fifth meeting between these two clubs.
- 6:43They met for the first time in 1921, and baseball history of sorts has been made since then.
- 6:50In 1921, for example, there was no Yankee Stadium.
- 6:54Both of the New York clubs played in the Polar Bounds, which is across the Harlem River.
- 6:59In the 1921 series, the New York Giants were tops in baseball.
- 7:05John McGraw was leading them, and they were a fiery baseball club.
- 7:08In my judgment, the club that Bill Terry is sending out on the field this afternoon is the best New York club since the heyday of McGraw.
- 7:16In that 1921 series, the games were played on the basis of five out of nine,
- 7:23rather than the four out of seven, which had existed in earlier years and which has been brought back into play now.
- 7:31In that 1921 series, the Giants won five and the Yankees won three.
- 7:36The following year, 1922, the Giants won again, and they won four games.
- 7:41The Yankees didn't win any.
- 7:43That was the return to the four out of seven, as far as the Giants and Yankees were concerned.
- 7:48The Yankees started to get going in 1923, which was the third successive year that Yankees and Giants played in the World Series.
- 7:56And what strikes me now is I've looked at these two pennant races in the National and American League, and maybe we're back to those old days again.
- 8:04The Giants and Yankees won last year, and they won again this year,
- 8:08having proven conclusively in their respective leagues that they were firing away the best ball clubs in those leagues.
- 8:14So it is quite possible that we may have another stretch of three years, or possibly more, of these all-New York series, the Subway Series, as they call them.
- 8:23In 1923, when the Yankees won the World Championship from the Giants, they won four, and the Giants won two.
- 8:31After that, the Yankees fell apart a little bit, and it took them a little while to rebuild until they came back stronger than ever.
- 8:38The Giants won another pennant in 1924, but they didn't have the Yankees as their opponents in the World Series that year.
- 8:45Thus it was, we came into 1936 before the two clubs met again.
- 8:51And of course, we will all remember that the Yankees won a really sensational series here last year, four games out of six.
- 8:58Summing up then, we find that down through these four series that have been played to date, the Giants have won 13 games, and the Yankees have won 11,
- 9:07which seems to me to bring the two teams very close.
- 9:10In a sense then, this series, which begins today being the fifth, is a rubber series, unless of course we figure that they're going to keep right on going again next year.
- 9:19These meetings between the Giants and the Yankees have been productive of some sensational baseball, some very colorful things,
- 9:25some of the strangest things that have ever happened in World Series play have happened when the Giants were meeting the Yankees.
- 9:31It was in one of these series that we have the famous episode in which a plate umpire declared that it was dark,
- 9:37when very few people in the park thought it was dark, with the result that the Commissioner Landis,
- 9:42to whom the decision of the umpire came as much of a stunning surprise as to anybody else, decided to give the money that was spent for those tickets to charity.
- 9:51That was one of the more famous incidents of this giant Yankee series.
- 9:56There were a lot of strange plays and a lot of sensational plays, but that's almost enough for the past.
- 10:02Let us get to the present, looking at the lineups today, which the loud speaking system is about to give you. Perhaps I should pause and let you hear that.
- 10:25The Giants, number 8, catching for the Yankees, Gomez, number 8, kicking.
- 10:46The umpires for the game are Ormsby, De'Nancy, Lane, Barr, at first base, Seasill, at second base, Stewart, at second base. Thank you.
- 11:09You've heard now the pitchers and the catchers and the umpires, Gomez versus Hubbell, which we've been expecting this meeting between the two representative left-handers of their respective leagues.
- 11:21As I look through the batting orders and the lineups of the two teams, I find one thing that must be of interest to far-off California.
- 11:29I notice that the New York Yankees in their starting lineup have no less than five out of their nine ball players coming from California.
- 11:36Ladies and gentlemen, the National Anthem.
- 12:06The National Anthem.
- 12:36Back again in our duties, and I was speaking before the anthem about the Native Sons of California.
- 12:53On the Yankee side are Gomez, the pitcher, Frank Crocetti, the shortstop, Tony Lazzari, the second baseman, perhaps the greatest of them all, Joe DiMaggio, the center fielder, and Merrill Hoke, the left fielder.
- 13:04Against them on the giant side is only Dick Bartel, representing California.
- 13:10And this is not a plug for my Native State or anything like that, but it is just an interesting side-light.
- 13:16As we look at the game now, which is almost to begin, it seems to me that the Giants come into this series as a scout defensive club, a good-spirited club with fine pitching and a modicum of power.
- 13:29The Yankees, of course, are the powerhouse with also good pitching. If anything, that pitching is on a par with the Giants.
- 13:36In a sense, it seems to me that we are going to look at, starting this afternoon, a world series in which we will have the famous test that we've long awaited between the irresistible force and the immovable object.
- 13:49And now it seems to me that it's almost time for us to hear from my friend, Tom Manning, of Cleveland. All right, Tom.
- 13:56Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. That round of applause has been for the New York Yankees.
- 14:00The winners of the pennant in the American League have opposed this afternoon this world series.
- 14:05It will be the New York Giants in the National League running over the lineup again for your reference.
- 14:09Not on the field at the moment, the Yankees. Frank Gozelli in short will lead off.
- 14:14Fred Wolf in third base will bat second.
- 14:17And that sensational Joe DiMaggio in center field will bat third.
- 14:22At first base will be the Iron Horns, Lou Gehrig.
- 14:26The catcher will be Bill Dickey in left field for the Yankees.
- 14:30Merle Holt in right field, George Selkirk.
- 14:34Tony Lozari, Tony Lozari, the veteran second baseman, will be at the Keystone Sack for the American League.
- 14:42At the Keystone Sack for the American League.
- 14:46And the pitcher, as Warren Brown told you, will be Luthor Gomez.
- 14:55For the Giants, Bill Terry, going to out-just the boys today.
- 15:00There are a couple of changes. Joe Moore in left field.
- 15:03Nick Barthel in short.
- 15:05Melville Lott in third base.
- 15:09Hank Leiber in right field.
- 15:13Ripple.
- 15:17Hank Leiber will be in center field and Ripple will be in right field.
- 15:20Leiber in center, Ripple in right.
- 15:23McCarthy in first base.
- 15:25Mancuso catch.
- 15:26Whitehead.
- 15:27Second base, Hubbell pitch.
- 15:29Umpire red ornisface.
- 15:31Behind the bat, American League Umpire.
- 15:33Adjusts to the class. Bill Dickey's watched down.
- 15:36And the first hitter is Joe Moore.
- 15:38Joe Moore in the left hand banner.
- 15:40The left field of the Giants.
- 15:41Leslie Gomez now is taking the dirt around the rubber.
- 15:43And the pomp and ceremony is off.
- 15:45The boys are down on earnest now, fighting for this championship.
- 15:48The signal, the wind up, and the series is on.
- 15:51Strike ball.
- 15:52A back ball came right down the old alley.
- 15:55Joe Moore took a look at it, stepped away from the plate.
- 15:58And the first pitch of the 1937 World Series is a called strike on Joey Moore.
- 16:06Strike between the two.
- 16:18It's a pounding ball down first.
- 16:20Gary Hazzard, he runs to the back to put out on assistant.
- 16:23Joe Moore is out.
- 16:25Gary on assistant.
- 16:29One man down in the first inning of this first game of the World Series.
- 16:32And little Dick Bartel.
- 16:35Right hand hitter.
- 16:37Short staff of the Giants is next.
- 16:40He's a little fellow, but he can hit that ball with a far corner.
- 16:45I think he's 29 years old.
- 16:47This year he's batted 306.
- 16:50Leslie Gomez, the pitch.
- 16:53The foul back against the three.
- 16:58Matt Orsby, the American League up higher, tosses out a new ball to Bill Dickey.
- 17:02You know, Bill Dickey is one of the tallest catchers ever to count into the Major Leagues.
- 17:06Matt, what a catcher.
- 17:10First inning, one man out, nobody on.
- 17:13Leslie Gomez.
- 17:15Ball, it's too high.
- 17:17That was a fast ball, very high.
- 17:19And the count on Dick Bartel, ball one and strike one.
- 17:23First inning, one man out, nobody on.
- 17:29Here's the pitch.
- 17:31Inside, ball two.
- 17:34Leslie Gomez trying to keep that ball inside for Dick Bartel.
- 17:39He has the outfield, moves over just a little bit for right field.
- 17:44Left center and right fielder playing over them.
- 17:47As the base hitter, Justin Feinberg, out of the inforter, turns off the ball.
- 17:52O'Harrison, the go-to second drives it back to first base.
- 17:55And it's a base hit for Dick Bartel.
- 18:00That was a ripping smash just inside the third base cushion.
- 18:04Ball going down the left field corner.
- 18:06It turned off, retrieved by Holt.
- 18:08Holt returning the ball to Frank Rosetti and driving Dick Bartel back to first base.
- 18:13Terrible not.
- 18:14A giant third baseman.
- 18:16Seems rather strange to say the giant third baseman.
- 18:18For many years he was a right fielder.
- 18:20Here's the pitch.
- 18:21Strike call.
- 18:22A beautiful hook ball that caught the inside corner of the plate with Terrible not stepping back.
- 18:28First inning, one man out.
- 18:30Dick Bartel on first.
- 18:32Terrible not.
- 18:33Left hand batter is in the box.
- 18:35Ball two.
- 18:37A slow sweeping curve ball that missed the outside corner.
- 18:40And the count on Mel is one and one.
- 18:45George Hicks told you, it's kind of a dark day.
- 18:48Much to the advantage of Gomez.
- 18:50It's a high foul ball going in the box.
- 18:52This over and back of third base.
- 18:54And it's strike two.
- 18:56And ball one.
- 18:58Very, very few vacant seats.
- 19:01Upstairs, the last two tiers.
- 19:04And in the last tier and a half and in the main floor, just the last tier.
- 19:10The same thing as probably in the white field floor.
- 19:12The pitch.
- 19:13A high fly ball infield.
- 19:15Luke Gehrig.
- 19:16Luke Gehrig under it.
- 19:18He has it.
- 19:19Two outs.
- 19:21Dick Bartel on first.
- 19:23And Hank Lieber coming up.
- 19:27Hank Lieber will be in center field this afternoon.
- 19:32Jimmy Ripple in right field and Joe Moore in left field.
- 19:37He's gone for a while.
- 19:39The Chiosy might play center field for the Giants.
- 19:42But that has been changed.
- 19:43And Lieber will be in center.
- 19:45Here it is.
- 19:46Ball one.
- 19:47Last ball was over but just a little bit too high.
- 19:50Hank Lieber.
- 19:53That's a white handed.
- 19:56The first inning, two outs.
- 19:58Dick Bartel on first.
- 20:00It's a foul back.
- 20:01The hit and run was on that time.
- 20:03Dick Bartel was off with lefty Gomez motion.
- 20:06Ran all the way down to second base.
- 20:08And now he trots back.
- 20:11The umpires warm as we behind the bat.
- 20:13Farr is at first.
- 20:14Steve Fast was at second.
- 20:16And Bill Stewart on par with the Giants.
- 20:18And Bill Stewart umpiring at third.
- 20:21Of course the umpires would shift around each day.
- 20:24Rotate.
- 20:26All right.
- 20:27Hank Lieber's strike one.
- 20:28Ball one.
- 20:29Strike two.
- 20:31Makes a mighty swing.
- 20:32He wasn't pulling on that one.
- 20:33Swung hard and missed it.
- 20:34And the count is strike two.
- 20:36And ball one.
- 20:39The Giants being the visiting club today batting first.
- 20:45Two men out.
- 20:46Bartel on first.
- 20:47Here it is.
- 20:48Inside.
- 20:49Lefty Gomez thought he had a corner on that one.
- 20:51But it was inside.
- 20:52And the count is strike two.
- 20:54And ball two.
- 21:01Oh, DiMaggio and Selkirk are playing bloody deep.
- 21:04Two and two coming.
- 21:06Strike three.
- 21:07Strike three.
- 21:08Swing hard and missed it.
- 21:09No run.
- 21:10One hit.
- 21:11And no errors.
- 21:12Playable game one.
- 21:13Commit.
- 21:14Here it is, Tom, and the noticeable thing in that first half inning was the respect that
- 21:18the Giants evidently have for the throwing arms of these Yankee outfielders.
- 21:23That ball that Bartel hit over third base was normally one on which he would try for
- 21:28second base.
- 21:29But he made his round of first and half-heartedly and then turned back to first.
- 21:34You evidently have heard that the arms of Hogan and DiMaggio and that Yankee outfield
- 21:38can throw that ball around.
- 21:40The other noticeable thing, which I think we might as well refer now, is that the rains
- 21:45of last night have slowed down this field to a considerable extent.
- 21:49I notice that as the boys run around out there, they're digging up large sort of divots in
- 21:54the turf.
- 21:55And I'm afraid that there will not be any too much speed shown until the place dries
- 21:59out a little.
- 22:00And as the sun is now coming out strong, it probably will be dry and, as they say, have
- 22:05to track fast before the afternoon is over.
- 22:08Gomez, in striking out Leiber to end the inning, departed from his orthodox passion of firing
- 22:14that ball through there.
- 22:15The last strike was slowed up and a true Leiber completely off his stride.
- 22:20And it was an interesting pitch.
- 22:22All right, Tom, here's the first hitter.
- 22:24It might keep us in mind.
- 22:25Brennan and Gumbert throwing out the right field bullpen to warm up.
- 22:32It'll be Carl Hubbell, you know, left hand with the box.
- 22:35Over Giants, Carlos one, 22, and lost big.
- 22:4033 years old, long, lanky left-hander.
- 22:43The first hitter will be Frank Rosetti.
- 22:45Play, the wind up.
- 22:47Ball one.
- 22:48A hook ball was low inside.
- 22:50Rosetti wiggling around up there, stepped away, took it, and the count is one and nothing.
- 22:55Ben Robe, the Yankee third baseman, will be next.
- 23:02Hubbell bending over now.
- 23:04He's taking just a little bit of time.
- 23:06He always starts off rather slow and then long about the fourth inning.
- 23:09Hubs it up a little.
- 23:10Ball one.
- 23:11Inside.
- 23:13And the count is looped and nothing.
- 23:16On that Giants infield, it's well on a third base.
- 23:18Dick Bartell in short.
- 23:19Burgess Whitehead in second.
- 23:20And Johnny McCarthy at first.
- 23:26Hubbell is in the box.
- 23:27And Mancuso throwing the catch.
- 23:29Rosetti up.
- 23:30The count's ball two.
- 23:31Strike, ball, a burning fastball right down the old alley.
- 23:36About felt high.
- 23:37Frankie Rosetti jumping away from the plate.
- 23:39It ought to be called it.
- 23:41And the count is ball two and strike one.
- 23:47A lot of pepper on that Giants infield for the moment.
- 23:52Outside, and it's ball three.
- 23:55Ball three and strike one.
- 24:00The count's ball two and strike one.
- 24:02Hubbell tried to come in there with a sweeping curveball over the outside, making Rosetti
- 24:06reach for it.
- 24:07But he refused.
- 24:08Ball was outside and it's ball three and strike one.
- 24:11No score as yet.
- 24:13Frank Rosetti, first man up for the Yankees in the last half of the first inning.
- 24:19Can he get that out for you?
- 24:20That's Joe Moore on left.
- 24:21Hank Lieber in center.
- 24:22Jimmy Ripple in right.
- 24:25Ball three and strike one.
- 24:27Rosetti, right hander up.
- 24:29Outside, ball four and Rosetti walks.
- 24:36Coming up now we have Red Roe.
- 24:38Peppery, third baseman.
- 24:40Paxson, left hander.
- 24:42Yankee uniforms are white.
- 24:44The home uniform white.
- 24:46The blue stripe.
- 24:47Martin Luther Martin.
- 24:48They're wearing navy blue jerseys, blue caps, blue stock.
- 24:55The NY of course on the top of their cap.
- 25:02Carl Hubbell trying to pick it with the left hander.
- 25:04Makes a stretch, a peek at first.
- 25:06Here it is.
- 25:07It's in there.
- 25:08A called strike.
- 25:11Nice sharp breaking curveball that Red Roe started to dart away from.
- 25:15It's broken over the heart of the plate for a called strike.
- 25:19Joe DiMaggio will be next.
- 25:23He has a big lead.
- 25:25Has a play at first.
- 25:26Elbow.
- 25:30Just to let them know that you're in there.
- 25:32Hubbell crossing that call over with not any great amount of effort.
- 25:38Strike one, the count.
- 25:39It's outside.
- 25:41Sharp breaking curveball is plenty low and outside.
- 25:44Gus Mancuso jumping over fourth.
- 25:46Not even with the count on roll.
- 25:56There's the stretch.
- 25:57Peek over to first.
- 25:58There's a play at first.
- 26:01Not even close because he's getting back fast.
- 26:05Hubbell wasn't burning that ball over to Johnny McCarthy.
- 26:08Just letting them know that he's in there.
- 26:11Call one and strike one coming.
- 26:13It's outside and low.
- 26:18Hubbell's simply headed it around that.
- 26:21Mancuso turned around and talked to Ornstein.
- 26:25Burgess White at the second base was walked in from his spot.
- 26:29Yelling something at Hubbell.
- 26:31Hubbell picks up the rocket bag now.
- 26:33Now he's picking the dirt around on the top of the rubber there.
- 26:39Come on, it's playing pretty deep third base.
- 26:43Hitler on his on, fly ball, and back at third base.
- 26:48And it's two and two.
- 26:51That's at least a glimpse of what Joe McCarthy, the manager of the Yankees,
- 26:55might be doing in this series.
- 26:58Instead of getting that sacrifice and playing for the one run,
- 27:02that count ball two and strike one with the hitler on.
- 27:07They're all coaching it first.
- 27:09Arnie Fletcher is third.
- 27:11The cow is ball two.
- 27:13Smeiks is.
- 27:14Rosetti on first.
- 27:16There's not a base on balls and nobody else.
- 27:18Hubbell pitching.
- 27:20Two and two over to first base.
- 27:25Tossed over there with sort of nonchalantly.
- 27:29Third time he's tossed over there with no particular speed on that cross from the block.
- 27:33Here it is.
- 27:35Smeiks outside, foul ball.
- 27:38Fans jump to their feet down.
- 27:40That was a very hard smack that Rolfe turned all the way around on.
- 27:43Pulled it a little bit too much.
- 27:45It landed about two yards outside the first base cushion.
- 27:52One of the boys with a barrel nut of watching in this short blue ribbon classic will be Johnny McCarthy.
- 27:58He will replace manager Bill Terry in first base.
- 28:04And Rolfe is in there with a cow ball two and strike two.
- 28:08And Rosetti on first, nobody else.
- 28:14Here it comes.
- 28:15Strike three.
- 28:17Smeiks three.
- 28:21That cow two and two.
- 28:23Rolfe seems to lead the forward part of the battered box.
- 28:27Raps expecting a fast ball.
- 28:29Hubbell came in there with a shot breaking football.
- 28:32Right over the inside corner.
- 28:34Just caught it inside corner and Rolfe.
- 28:37Strong, lifted by, separated.
- 28:41Now we have a little different picture.
- 28:43One man out.
- 28:46Frankie Coselli on first.
- 28:48And great Joe DiMaggio.
- 28:50Joe, you know, 22 years old.
- 28:52He hit 3.46 this year.
- 28:54Let both leagues with home runs.
- 28:59Marcio makes a fighting cut from way back on that one.
- 29:06A hold of that ball and it will certainly knock it out of the
- 29:08card he won.
- 29:12Last half of the first inning of this first game of the
- 29:14World Series.
- 29:16One man out.
- 29:17Frankie Coselli on first with taking an exceptionally long
- 29:20lead.
- 29:21There's a puck over to first loco.
- 29:24Little faster that time.
- 29:29Frankie Coselli is a pretty wiry little boy when he gets on
- 29:32the bases.
- 29:34Strike one on DiMaggio.
- 29:36Strike two.
- 29:37Oh, boy did the Hubbell have a lot of stuff on that baby.
- 29:41He's outside.
- 29:42He didn't look for a moment.
- 29:43So he had a chance of cutting in.
- 29:45But it twisted over the heart of the plate.
- 29:48Apparently pulling Joey on that one.
- 29:51Joe was up there with a toe hold.
- 29:54Now it's strike two.
- 29:55Outside a pitch out of puck to first loco.
- 30:00Coselli was heads up that time.
- 30:02He came in the left bag sliding and sliding hard.
- 30:08A little inside face ball by Mancuso calling to that pitch
- 30:10out.
- 30:11That's a signal to the pitcher that the runner on the face
- 30:14might be caught.
- 30:16No, that's catcher's signals for the pitcher to throw the ball
- 30:18wide at the plate, getting the batter out of the way so he
- 30:21can make the play at first.
- 30:22That's the term of a pitch out of it.
- 30:24That's the one round.
- 30:27Something wrong with that ball out there.
- 30:30Frankie Coselli asked me to take a look at it.
- 30:33He discussed with Mr. Hubbell.
- 30:36Instead of throwing it in, he rolled it in on the ground.
- 30:39He also took a look at it and crossed it out.
- 30:41Now we've got to do it.
- 30:43Last half of the first inning, one man out.
- 30:45Frank Coselli is on first.
- 30:48Joe DiMaggio is up, right to a ball one.
- 30:51Marroping to Gary Fex at the pitch.
- 30:54The foul is ball to Fex.
- 30:56Fex throw it out to the left field.
- 30:58The ball on 33 by Joey Moore.
- 31:00Joey Fex to right-handed second.
- 31:02Holy Coselli at second base.
- 31:04A face hit.
- 31:05More goal to DiMaggio.
- 31:07That was a ground ball.
- 31:09The foul will not go far.
- 31:11That's just business.
- 31:12It rolled on out to left field where it was retrieved by Joey Moore.
- 31:16Frank Coselli was fast and had no chance at all of going to third base.
- 31:20Joey Moore after he rounded the bag,
- 31:22whips the ball to whitehead at second.
- 31:25But Coselli gets back.
- 31:26Now we have Luke Gehrig coming up.
- 31:28Gehrig in old fashion, left-handed.
- 31:31Luke has been heading 353 this season.
- 31:35And he's 33 years old.
- 31:37Hasn't missed a ball game since the Lord knows when.
- 31:41Double pitching.
- 31:43There it is.
- 31:45Made-away curve ball.
- 31:47Missed the outside corner.
- 31:49And it's ball one.
- 31:52Frank Coselli is on second.
- 31:55Joe DiMaggio on first.
- 32:00Just a couple of Italian boys that know something about this game called baseball.
- 32:09Ball one.
- 32:11Gary Kidding.
- 32:12Here it is.
- 32:13A long drive, high and far out, but not going too far away.
- 32:16Hank Lieber is under it.
- 32:18And he has it.
- 32:20Returns the ball to Burgess Whitehead.
- 32:22Coselli holding second.
- 32:23DiMaggio holding first.
- 32:25Gary got ahold of that ball.
- 32:27But John Barnes of this Yankee Stadium, you know,
- 32:30are pretty long.
- 32:31And the boys took that ball out there.
- 32:33Not quite out to the center track.
- 32:36Let me give you the figures on this field.
- 32:37The left field is 301 feet to the left field corner.
- 32:40Then the right left field is 402 feet.
- 32:43Directly in center field is 461.
- 32:45Right center is 407.
- 32:47And on the line in left field is 296 feet.
- 32:50Of course, it branches out within 30 or 40 feet of that.
- 32:53It's 344 feet back.
- 32:57Right now we have two men out.
- 32:58And Bill Zicke at bat.
- 33:00McCatter, left hand batter.
- 33:05Outside, ball one.
- 33:09Carl Hubbell leaning almost back to second base
- 33:12before he cut loose to that ball.
- 33:17Apparently he's trying to keep that ball over the lower
- 33:19outside corner for Bill Zicke.
- 33:24Nick Bartell moves over toward the second base cushion.
- 33:27Strike, ball.
- 33:30Ball one, strike one.
- 33:32Frank Gozetti on second.
- 33:35Joe DiMaggio on first, two men up.
- 33:38Walt struck out.
- 33:40Gary Flagelieber in center field.
- 33:44Carl Hubbell, left hander, is in the box for the Giants.
- 33:47Ball one, strike one.
- 33:49Makes a look at second base.
- 33:50Here it is.
- 33:52Strike two, tip down.
- 33:53Perhaps here, that's Matthews making the catch of the ball.
- 33:56And a counter strike two, and ball one.
- 34:03There's a lot of excitement here at Jackie Stadium.
- 34:05The folks have been waiting, you know,
- 34:08just 12 months for this classic.
- 34:12Down on Bill Zicke, now a strike two and ball one.
- 34:17Outside of the counters, two and two.
- 34:20Merle Holt, who is playing out left field
- 34:22against the south ball shoots of Carl Hubbell, is next.
- 34:27At the left fielder is Jackie Powell.
- 34:32Ball two and strike two.
- 34:34Hubbell takes the stretch.
- 34:37There it is.
- 34:39Tip foul.
- 34:41Dickie swung over that ball, landed right there, home plate.
- 34:46So far, what's not a new ball, the Giants
- 34:48smacking around that infield with the raffinity of Mike Malat.
- 34:52Dick Bartel, the whitehead to McCarthy,
- 34:54and then back to the pitcher, Hubbell.
- 34:58Giant outfield at Joe Warren left, Hank Lieber in center,
- 35:01and Jimmy Ripple in right.
- 35:04DiMaggio on first, Rosetti on second, two outs,
- 35:06Dickie batting, ball two, strike two.
- 35:09Coming.
- 35:11Ball three.
- 35:13A burning fastball.
- 35:15No Bill Dickie away from the plate.
- 35:18Haven't had so much on him that it brought a great
- 35:20throng from the crowd.
- 35:2450-10, it's one, and somewhat over 60.
- 35:28Here are the figures on the attendance,
- 35:30just to see if they're made as better than the watch.
- 35:34Four-counter, three and two, the runners will be off
- 35:36of the pitch.
- 35:37There they go, and here it is.
- 35:39The fly ball going out of the deep center field,
- 35:41Hank Lieber running back under it, and he has it.
- 35:44That's all for the Yankees on the first inning.
- 35:47No runs, one hit, one base downfall, and no errors.
- 35:52Now radio fans, please pause briefly for station identification.
- 36:12Back at the NBC booth in the Yankee Stadium,
- 36:16and the thought that strikes me after watching the Yankees'
- 36:18first attempt at Carl Hubbell's pitching in this game is that
- 36:22Hubbell's been a little bit wild to the extent that he's been
- 36:26three and two on most of these hitters.
- 36:28He's been working that ball towards the corners there,
- 36:30pitching very carefully for the simple reason that it is not
- 36:33a good judgment to get that ball any too good for these
- 36:37Yankee hitters.
- 36:38While he was hit for one base hit,
- 36:40the one that Joe DiMaggio's flashed past Melada third base,
- 36:44that was a sort of a soggy hit, and it wasn't hit with the
- 36:47authority that we are accustomed to watch when the Yankees
- 36:50really get a hold of the ball.
- 36:52So far in the ball game, it has been mostly one of defense with
- 36:56the Yankees furnishing the principal set,
- 36:59of which, as you know now, nothing came.
- 37:02All right, Tom, it looks like the hitter's up here,
- 37:05so let's have them.
- 37:07Well, it'll be Jimmy Ripple.
- 37:09A giant right fielder.
- 37:11They completed the first inning without any score.
- 37:13One hit apiece.
- 37:16Carl Hubbell has issued one base on balls.
- 37:19So far, lefty Gomez has issued no bases on balls.
- 37:24Jimmy Ripple leading off.
- 37:26Jimmy, left hand hitter, the right fielder of the Giants.
- 37:29Here we go.
- 37:30All one.
- 37:32That was a fast ball that Gomez had in there,
- 37:34but it was just a little bit too low.
- 37:40Johnny McCarty will be next.
- 37:42All ball up the back of third base.
- 37:45All one strike one.
- 37:47Here's Jimmy, he broke his bat.
- 37:50Hitting that ball, that's what he did,
- 37:51and he's walking slowly over toward the Giants dugout to get
- 37:54a new one.
- 37:55One thing that the ball player does hate to do is to play
- 37:58their bat.
- 38:00Tell me, Warren, how did that ever start?
- 38:03He broke his bat and sort of broke the ball.
- 38:06Well, that's just one of those superstitions that come along
- 38:08in baseball, like somebody who started a hit by wearing their
- 38:11pants long, you know, they used to pull them all up in the
- 38:14old days.
- 38:15One fellow started in like Cal Simmons or somebody like that
- 38:18with his pants down loose, and now pretty nearly everybody
- 38:21does.
- 38:24Ready to go again.
- 38:25All one on strike one, Ripple hitting.
- 38:27That's a long crash going out to left field.
- 38:30Merle Hove waiting for it.
- 38:31He has it.
- 38:32Jimmy Ripple with the count ball one on strike one.
- 38:35Fly to Merle Hove in medium left field.
- 38:42Johnny McCarthy.
- 38:45First year as a regular with the Giants.
- 38:47They like him here in New York.
- 38:49He's getting a nice hand.
- 38:50He steps into the batter's box.
- 38:52He smacks and goes left-handed.
- 38:58Lefty Gomez outside, all one.
- 39:05Awful smuggy and awful dark here at the moment.
- 39:08Little wind blowing in from the northwest.
- 39:11And he makes the catch.
- 39:15He looked at the umpire, the umpire Steve Bader wave,
- 39:18and it was a non-assisted put out.
- 39:21Looked his own Tony just barely got his club underneath that
- 39:23ball, a terrific line smashed right at Tony's feet.
- 39:27He held the ball up and Steve Bader waved out.
- 39:30That's Tony Mazzelli made the catch.
- 39:35Two out, nobody on.
- 39:37First half of the second inning.
- 39:42That's Mancuso off.
- 39:45Strike call.
- 39:46That's 31 years old.
- 39:48This season he batted 279.
- 39:52And Yankee outfield.
- 39:54Hogan left, DiMaggio center, Selkirk right.
- 39:57The pitch is a ball.
- 39:59Ball one inside, ball one and strike one.
- 40:07Wind up.
- 40:10That's a long smash into right center field.
- 40:12Selkirk going over fast and he has it.
- 40:14Very nice running catch by right fielder Georgie Selkirk.
- 40:17Mancuso hitting that ball on a line into right center field.
- 40:20Selkirk was off to the back of the bat and made the catch.
- 40:24The noticeable thing there was the fact that all three of these
- 40:29Yankee hitters were giant hitters and two of them left hand
- 40:32hitters took very solid wallops at the ball.
- 40:36That's the hardest hit of the game to date in the force of
- 40:40effectiveness was that line drive that McCarty hit out at
- 40:44Lazare out there.
- 40:45It's interesting to me to find those fellas walking in there
- 40:48against Gomez since in the first inning outside of Barthel's
- 40:51drive over third base they looked a little bit weak.
- 40:54Right.
- 40:55Evidently Gomez is not treating them with the same respect that
- 40:59Hubbell is treating the Yankee hitters.
- 41:01He's simply firing that ball in and thrusting at those nine men
- 41:04in back of them or eight men I should say in back of them and
- 41:07certainly so far they've done a swell job.
- 41:09Two of those catches out there in the outfield were better than
- 41:13ordinary catches particularly Selkirk's on the last one.
- 41:17That's your first Yankee hitter.
- 41:19That'll be Merle Hogan.
- 41:21Last half of the second inning no score yet.
- 41:24Merle Hogan is 29 years old.
- 41:26He comes from Sacramento, California.
- 41:29This season batting 301.
- 41:33Merle has always been a fine baseball player but unfortunately
- 41:37he's been out of the regular lineup on many occasions because
- 41:41he's always had much superior outfield.
- 41:48It's Carl Hubbell, you know, a south-forked man,
- 41:50Q so catching.
- 41:52Last half of the second inning no score and Hogan the hitter.
- 41:56Strike call.
- 41:57Merle Hogan stuck his bat out through third base from
- 42:00Melodin but of course had no intention of batting that ball
- 42:03just by way of drawing Melodin from third base.
- 42:06Oh, low and outside on the count on Hogan.
- 42:15Ball one and strike one.
- 42:18Merle Hogan the batter, Georgie Selkirk.
- 42:21George has been on the injured and sick list quite a bit during
- 42:24the last half of the season but he's back in and out strong as
- 42:27ever.
- 42:28Ball one, strike one.
- 42:30Bounding ball down, third goes foul.
- 42:33Artie Butcher tried to stop it, got past him but Val Harkin
- 42:36trees the ball and then the Giants flip it around the
- 42:38infield.
- 42:39Dick Bartel to Whitehead to McCarthy and finally back to
- 42:42Hubbell.
- 42:46Carl Hogan hit that ball, started to run with three
- 42:48quarters of the way down to first base, walking back rather
- 42:51slow.
- 42:55Strike two and ball one.
- 42:58Carl Hubbell winding up.
- 43:01Too high.
- 43:03Over the plate, a little bit high on the count as ball two
- 43:05and strike two.
- 43:09NBC Mike is right over home plate with pretty high but
- 43:12right in line with the pitcher and catcher.
- 43:16Pretty fair seat in other words.
- 43:18Ball two, strike two.
- 43:21Bounding ball down short, Burgess comes up with it to
- 43:24throw, he's out.
- 43:26Out by plenty.
- 43:28Put out six to three for those who keep the score.
- 43:37That's Warren Brown just gives me a note that that was the
- 43:39first assist to the ball game.
- 43:42Like you are Warren.
- 43:44Strike out two fly balls, two flies to center field by
- 43:47carrying a ticket and a strike out by Ross.
- 43:50Now we have George Iselkirk, the right fielder left hand
- 43:52batter coming up.
- 43:54George hit three twenty eight this year.
- 43:56George is twenty nine years old.
- 43:59Gets the first ball a high hopper, counts second phase
- 44:02white head to McCarthy and Iselkirk is out.
- 44:08Last half of the second inning with no scores yet.
- 44:11Two men have been retired and push him up Tony Nazarian
- 44:14listens to the call he gets.
- 44:21Tony Nazarian, always been a gentleman.
- 44:25One great ball player.
- 44:27They like him a lot here in New York and they should.
- 44:32Tony bats him right hand.
- 44:36The other one outside.
- 44:38Tony is thirty three years old.
- 44:40This year Tony has hit the head as well as usual.
- 44:44Batting around two fifty.
- 44:53Ball one is the count, two out, nobody off.
- 44:56Strike call.
- 44:58Hubbell had a nice fast ball over the inside corner with
- 45:00Lazeri pulling away.
- 45:02He gets a handful of dirt there, drying his hands off.
- 45:06And the count will be ball one and strike one.
- 45:09Last half of the second inning, no scores yet, two out,
- 45:12nobody off.
- 45:14The hot-spag back to Hubbell, he knocked it down,
- 45:17picks it up, crosses for McCarthy and Lazeri is out.
- 45:20The ball was hit right back on the nose and the
- 45:23apologies for that stop of Kyle Hubbell.
- 45:25No runs, no hits, no lowers, no scores.
- 45:27The conclusion of the two inning, score.
- 45:29Well I'm sorry Tom that we brought up that matter of the
- 45:32no assists in that inning since there was nothing else
- 45:34from there on.
- 45:35But it was an oddity that we got into as far as the last
- 45:38half of the second inning without having one of the
- 45:40infielders handle the ball on the ground after
- 45:43throwing the first base.
- 45:45It seems to me now that the game has definitely settled
- 45:49into a warfare between the pitchers, which of course
- 45:52lives up to all the specifications of the experts
- 45:55going into the series.
- 45:57They recognize that Gomez was the superior pitcher in
- 46:00his league and there is no doubt in anybody's mind about
- 46:03Kyle Hubbell's place in the National League.
- 46:06And so far there hasn't been very much of anything
- 46:09between the two of them.
- 46:11It's been strictly a pitcher's battle so far and now we
- 46:13have to sit around here for a while and just wait and see
- 46:16what the break is going to be.
- 46:18It's sort of a ball game.
- 46:19One never knows when it might pop out.
- 46:21All right Tom.
- 46:23Going into the first half of third inning.
- 46:25The National League every the giant coming to bat.
- 46:28And their second baseman, Purchase Whitehead.
- 46:31Purchase 26 years old this year.
- 46:33He hit 286.
- 46:34Let's see Gomez winds up all on.
- 46:37Burning fast ball over the plate for two low.
- 46:41One hit of Pete so far.
- 46:46There's a pounding ball through the box.
- 46:50A 12 shot by Cogetti to foul.
- 46:52He's out.
- 46:53How beautiful play by Frankie Cogetti.
- 46:55That was a pounding ball just out of the reach of
- 46:57Rusty Gomez.
- 46:59Frankie Cogetti was off with a crack in the back.
- 47:01Took that ball.
- 47:02Played over the second base.
- 47:03Pushing right on the air.
- 47:04Hooked it over to Luke Gehrig for the foot out.
- 47:06He appauses for Kyle Hubbell.
- 47:08That was a wonderful.
- 47:17Kyle Hubbell you know.
- 47:18Picked his left hand and it's back to Whitehead.
- 47:20One out.
- 47:21Nobody on.
- 47:22A foul up there.
- 47:26Well there wasn't much of a scramble for that ball.
- 47:29It hopped right into the waiting hands of a gentleman
- 47:32who I do not believe is going to talk the fact.
- 47:39Here we go.
- 47:41Ball inside.
- 47:42Sharp breaking hook ball.
- 47:44Just a little bit close.
- 47:45And the count is ball one and strike one on Kyle Hubbell.
- 47:51Inside of it.
- 47:52Ball two.
- 47:54Rusty Gomez that's funny on that one.
- 47:57Getting quite dark here at Yankee Stadium in New York.
- 48:00That is advantageous for Rusty Gomez.
- 48:02Fireball finished.
- 48:04That's a long tag going out there.
- 48:06Whitefield shelter going back and near the wall and makes a catch.
- 48:10That ball was hit exactly 340 feet from home plate.
- 48:13Dunkford taking that ball just about four feet in front of the barrier
- 48:17out in deep Whitefield.
- 48:20Mr. Hubbell tagged that ball very, very well.
- 48:26It's a face hit and an awful lot of ball park.
- 48:30But not here in space at Yankee Stadium.
- 48:33Two out.
- 48:34First half of the third inning, no score yet.
- 48:36What's going on at the top of the batting order coming up?
- 48:39It's Joe Moore.
- 48:40Last time up he was out Gary Gunner.
- 48:42A strike called.
- 48:47Rusty Gomez pitching and Phil Zicke to catch it.
- 48:51Coming.
- 48:53Ball two.
- 48:54Another shot breaking through the ball is outside.
- 48:57Correction, ball one, strike one.
- 49:04One and one.
- 49:06Ball two.
- 49:07Back ball over the plate but just a little bit low.
- 49:12And it's ball two and strike one.
- 49:15Let me grab that one.
- 49:16It's good enough.
- 49:20Here's the windup.
- 49:21Ball two and strike one.
- 49:23Ball back.
- 49:26And the count is two and two.
- 49:28Joe Moore coming up for the second time.
- 49:30Leadoff man of the Giants.
- 49:31The first time up he was out Gary Gunner.
- 49:36After the up cost that ball to Zicke.
- 49:38Yankees flipped it around the infield.
- 49:43Rusty Gomez taking his glove off.
- 49:48Nice putting it back on in the box.
- 49:51And here we go.
- 49:53Ball two, strike two.
- 49:54Oh a heart smash by Rusty Gomez.
- 49:56A similar play had ended the Yankee time at bat.
- 50:00A heart smash through the box to Rusty Gomez.
- 50:02Grabbed this glove and passed it over the first for the put out.
- 50:05No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 50:07Mr. Brown.
- 50:08All right Mr. Manning.
- 50:10The surprising thing I think is these last two innings as far as the Yankees are concerned is their presentation and a new life.
- 50:18All of us that have been writing and talking about the Yankees have been mentioning their power at the plate.
- 50:25These last two innings have shown them to be a very snappy defensive ball club.
- 50:31Every one of those plays in the last inning and every one of the plays in the second inning was a very deftly handled ball by whether it was outfielders or infielders.
- 50:40That play that Frank Crocetti made down in second base there was I think the most spectacular one so far.
- 50:49The outfielders certainly performed up to a standard that we didn't expect since we regarded them strictly as hitters.
- 50:55All right, Scott.
- 50:57And while the applause is sweeping through your loudspeaker now is for L. Doopey Gomez who's pitching this afternoon for the Yankees.
- 51:06The lefty doesn't get very many pace hits during the regular season.
- 51:11When he gets one, the ball is the most colorful pick.
- 51:14That happens to happen this afternoon when Kyle watches every move and transfer it to you.
- 51:22Last half of the third inning we have no scores yet.
- 51:24The Yankees coming to bat.
- 51:27And the pitcher, Lefty Gomez, who's got some unfrozen left hand.
- 51:32Hubbell, pounding ball down to Whitehead.
- 51:36An easy chance to play to McCarthy and Gomez is up.
- 51:45It was a rather feeble swing that Lefty took at that ball.
- 51:48Nice easy hopper that pushed his Whitehead, took the knee high and tossed it over to Johnny McCarthy for the up.
- 51:55Again the top of the Yankee batting order coming up.
- 51:57Frankie Cosetti, one of the three Italian boys that play on the Yankee team.
- 52:02Ben Cusso and Chiosa, the Italian boys on the Giants team.
- 52:09Last time up Cosetti threw a face on ball.
- 52:12The pitch ball won, it's low outside.
- 52:17This is the first game of the World Series.
- 52:19The boys will play four out of seven.
- 52:23Two here at Yankee Stadium and then we move over to the Polo card.
- 52:26Here we go.
- 52:27Strike four.
- 52:30Now they have a fast ball in there right over the heart of the plate.
- 52:33It's up high.
- 52:34A cold strike and the count is four one and strike one.
- 52:38Last half of the third inning.
- 52:39Yankees starting, one out, nobody on.
- 52:44There it is.
- 52:46Ball two.
- 52:47That was over the plate.
- 52:49A little bit too low and the count is ball two and the strike one.
- 52:55Red, roll, third baseman.
- 53:02Frankie Cosetti, right hand batter is up.
- 53:04Ball two and strike one.
- 53:07It is inside, ball three.
- 53:11Frankie Cosetti is a tough little boy to fix to.
- 53:15Always wiggling up there, giving the pitcher no target to skew that.
- 53:25One out, nobody on.
- 53:28Hubbell winds up at ball three and strike one.
- 53:31It's in there, a cold strike.
- 53:35Ball has that one in there, felt high and right over the heart of the plate.
- 53:39Frankie Cosetti elected to work out the string and the count is ball three and strike two.
- 53:48Three and two and this is the big one.
- 53:51Winding up.
- 53:54There's a long drive going to left field.
- 53:57It's all by one foot.
- 54:00Clear down in the corner.
- 54:02Everybody jump to their feet.
- 54:03We waited for a moment to make sure that that ball was outside and not more than a foot down in the left field corner
- 54:08and that perhaps is the hardest hit ball of the afternoon.
- 54:11That count three and two, Bob Hubbell came in there with a fast ball,
- 54:14much to the liking of Frankie Cosetti, right at toe holes.
- 54:18That's just a placement, just that kind of a pitch and he nailed it.
- 54:21Low line drive, it went thick and he scooped down on that left field corner
- 54:25and was followed by not more than a foot.
- 54:32Nice bit of upfiring here by Phil Stewart.
- 54:34He said he was on that play.
- 54:36Ready to go, three and two the count.
- 54:39How high, the grandfusel ripped off his mask, got it back but it's in the stands.
- 54:46Frankie Cosetti has a count of ball three and strike two.
- 54:51That one's deep.
- 54:53Now fire behind the plate this afternoon.
- 54:56Each time he crosses that ball off the boys sort of dirty it up a little bit with a little bit of infield dirt.
- 55:05Ready to go again, Hubbell has the ball, ball three and strike two.
- 55:10Followed it down third, followed by not too much.
- 55:14So close to being a third ball, the fella trapped it, puts it over to first base.
- 55:19Frankie has his eye on that hot corner.
- 55:24Frankie's a little fella, not very heavy but he certainly can pull those balls down for third base.
- 55:32Playing the last half, the third inning.
- 55:35Yankees have left with one out, nobody out.
- 55:38Frankie Cosetti up with a full count.
- 55:41There's the windup.
- 55:43High ball going out to left field.
- 55:46Joey Moore didn't move very much if he hasn't.
- 55:51Frankie Cosetti is a long left field hitter.
- 55:53Joey Moore, the giant left fielder, was playing out there pretty near the track.
- 55:57Joey Moore's got four or five yards to make that catch, now he has two out.
- 56:02Nobody on, left ball put back.
- 56:10Out of the two trips of the plate, Cosetti threw a face on balls and fly to Gilmore and left field.
- 56:16Left ball up, last time up he struck out.
- 56:22Two out, nobody on, Hubbell winds up.
- 56:26It's a ball, sweeping third ball, not too fast.
- 56:31That's the outside corner and the count on Rolfe is ball one.
- 56:37Not quite as dark here, now as it was while he transferred back.
- 56:42No sunshine or anything like that but lightening up a little bit.
- 56:47Left fielder, the scurvy foul into the stands and the count is ball one and strike one.
- 56:58Back in the batter's box, again Carl Hubbell has a new ball.
- 57:04That's the cleanest looking ball that we've seen out there this afternoon.
- 57:09Ball one and strike one, two out and nobody on.
- 57:14Fly ball going out to left field, Joey coming over to the line under it.
- 57:19He takes it and that's all for the Yankees and the Ferdinand.
- 57:21No runs, no hits, no overs, one.
- 57:24There's no reason to suspect, John, that these pitchers aren't still in complete control of the ball game.
- 57:32Hubbell has been almost perfect, I might say, since the first inning.
- 57:37Outside of Frank Cosetti who hit a ball rather sharply into left field.
- 57:42And Ralph who just did a dinky fly out to kill more.
- 57:46None of the others have been able to get the ball past the infield.
- 57:49Hubbell seems to have recovered whatever the lack of control it was that he started out at in the game.
- 57:55He's getting that ball just about where he wants it.
- 57:58And with these two clubs having a pretty good understanding of such weaknesses,
- 58:03if weaknesses exist in the other side's offensive array, I think Carl will go along pretty well.
- 58:10He seems to be perfectly self-contained whereas Gomez, on the other hand, is just as effective
- 58:16and seems to be perfectly content with the way things are going on.
- 58:19I don't know if that I blame him.
- 58:21All right, Tom.
- 58:23All right, we're going into the first half of the fourth inning.
- 58:25We ought to get a bit of excitement now on both sides.
- 58:28We have Martel up, Leaver coming up for the Giants,
- 58:31and in the fourth inning all the Yankees will have coming up will be DiMaggio, Garry, and Dickie.
- 58:41Group coaching at first and Snyder at third for the Giants.
- 58:44Here we go, Martel up.
- 58:45Gets the first ball pitch with a mighty drive going deep.
- 58:48Hope going back on the cylinder track and he has it.
- 58:51Run out.
- 58:52Dick Martel, as I told you in the first inning, is a long left field hitter.
- 58:56He got a hold of that first ball pitch.
- 58:58It was a high ball, a runner high, stepped into it, drove it deep out into left field with hope.
- 59:04It was playing deep, running back on the cylinder track, and making the catch.
- 59:11Now we have Melvin Knott coming up.
- 59:16That was 28 years old.
- 59:17He got it 294 this year.
- 59:19Last time up he tried the first baseman, Lou Garry.
- 59:24The first pitch, ball one.
- 59:26Stopped breaking, curved ball, it was Mo outside to the left-hand hitter.
- 59:31Ball two.
- 59:32Last ball right under Melvin's chin, stepped away from the plate.
- 59:36Now the card is to the nothing.
- 59:41First half of the fourth inning.
- 59:44There's a bounding ball through the box.
- 59:46Licelli goes over, makes the play, it's close.
- 59:48He's out.
- 59:49Oh, what a play that was by Tony Licelli.
- 59:52That was a bounding ball over the head.
- 59:54Oh, Kutny Gomez, Paul Inazeri, running away from first base.
- 59:58Grabbed that ball to his right, then leaped over it, shot the ball over to Lou Garry,
- 1:00:04just ahead of Mella.
- 1:00:06Only far above one step.
- 1:00:08Two outs, nobody on.
- 1:00:10Beautiful play by Tony, the best play of the game so far.
- 1:00:15Hank Weaver is up.
- 1:00:16Right-hand hitter, striking, swings, and listens.
- 1:00:22Two very beautiful infield plays there, one by Licelli and this one by Tony Licelli.
- 1:00:29Strike one, Weaver hitting.
- 1:00:31Strike two, makes a mighty cut at that tough breaking third ball, swung over it, and it's strike two.
- 1:00:47High infield fly ball and back of second base, Licelli, the jell's forth, already has it.
- 1:00:53That's all for the Giants for the fourth inning.
- 1:00:55No lungs, no hits, still earned one.
- 1:00:57All right, Tom, the thing that I've been waiting for since this world series game began just appeared out there now.
- 1:01:04We've heard still throughout the summer that maybe Tony Licelli, the veteran of many a campaign up here with the Yankees, was slowing down a little bit.
- 1:01:13Well, he certainly gives no evidence in that play that he made out there in this last inning.
- 1:01:18He ranged over back of second base and came up with a ball.
- 1:01:22The fact that he got in front of the ball was not so much a part of the play, but his ability to throw while definitely out of position.
- 1:01:29He was getting rid of that ball almost while he was running straight away from where he had to source.
- 1:01:35And the two activities combined gives Tony at the present time the lead for the spectacular feeling in this series.
- 1:01:43All right, Tom, here's Joe DiMaggio now.
- 1:01:46All right, the big guns of the Yankees.
- 1:01:48One of the big reasons why the Yankees is a fallout in front in the American League, DiMaggio, Jerry, and Dick.
- 1:01:58Giant outfield playing way back. Jerry Ripple is standing clear on the other side of the track, standing out there about 360 feet from home plate, waiting for DiMaggio to hit.
- 1:02:11Here we go, Hubble pitching. Ball one. Start breaking curve balls.
- 1:02:16A foot outside. Let's see that Joe Moore is playing right on the track. It's approximately 380 feet from home plate.
- 1:02:29They played Joe DiMaggio's deep and they should.
- 1:02:33The pounding ball between first and second. Right hand coming over. The throw, he's out.
- 1:02:39Joe hit that ball right on the tip of his bat and it was a sizzling little crowder down between first and second. Took for a moment.
- 1:02:46He had a chance to beat it out. The plate hit his bat, came over, scooped the ball up, got it through, Johnny McCarthy at first, and DiMaggio is out.
- 1:02:57Move Gary again. Last time up, move Gary, got a hold of the ball, but he hoisted it much too high. Getting center field ahead, gave him a chance to get under it, wore the foot off.
- 1:03:10Giant pitcher, Kyle Hubble. Striping the preparation from his foul. Now he's ready to go. Gary's the hitter. Left hand batter.
- 1:03:19Up. Strike, ball. Boy, so the Hubble's gonna be at a lot on that one.
- 1:03:29Passed the ball, he crossed all afternoon. Right over the heart of the plate.
- 1:03:36There it is. Outside. All one, right one. Oh yeah, Marcus Oder begins to peek. It's a couple quick times when this lady, Gary, steps up to that plate. What a picture.
- 1:03:52He crossed shoulders with his strong arms. One and one. Oh, clear over the stand. Over the back of first base. Quite a hoist to get it over the stand. Yankee state, he was rejected.
- 1:04:07Strike two, ball one. Yanks starting in the fourth inning and it's quite a ball game. A picture's not so far each side having one base hit. Amadio getting a hit for the Yanks and Martell for the Giants.
- 1:04:23Strike two and ball one. Inside, driving Gary away from the plate and the count is ball two and strike two. Gotcha Bill Vicki, hanging around home plate. He'll be next.
- 1:04:37Martell is playing over almost the back of second base. Whitehead has shifted over between first and second. Macazi playing two yards from the line. Here we go.
- 1:04:46Gary's throwing a ball ball just in front of him and it's a strike out. Carl Hubbell came in there fast and started breaking third balls. It looked like it was coming over the side of the plate.
- 1:04:58Gary started to swing and apparently tried to hold the swing but he was going in there so hard unable to hold it and swung around missing that ball by several feet.
- 1:05:07Kind of bad on that one. First white down, two going and nobody on.
- 1:05:16Always a picture with that Gary at that plate. And that was a real picture of Warren and Teddy apart at the moment. I feel like he has two on, nobody on.
- 1:05:25He's in there for a cold strike. You'll notice that from Gary, Vicki came to bat. Hubbell struck the first ball and there was a straight ball with all the speed that he had to his command.
- 1:05:37Keeping the ball just a little above the knee. Good picture.
- 1:05:41Ball there down first, Macazi has it. Macazi running the back to the put out. No one, no hitter, no score to conclude the four inning.
- 1:05:55At the time that Gary was at the bat I happened to be looking down into the giant dugout and Bill Kerry is down there sort of out in front of his players and to distinguish him from the rest of them he has a towel around his neck.
- 1:06:08I've been trying to figure out for several innings why that was but I gather he was waving his outfielders around particularly his center fielder, Hank Leiper.
- 1:06:16He was steering him around with the aid of his arm and the towel and I can see now that the distance of these giant outfielders play away from the plate and naturally away from their own dugout with Gary at the plate it's no wonder that Bill needs a towel around his neck.
- 1:06:31From that distance one giant looks the same as another. This is the first time that I've noticed Gary taking that active part in the direction of his outfielders during the progress of play but it was quite interesting to me.
- 1:06:42Alright Tom here comes the next one.
- 1:06:45Now we're going into the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:06:49As we're beginning to loop unison this time happens to be for the time.
- 1:07:02What's your opinion of that?
- 1:07:04Certainly broke off in here. I think Tom was the finest breaking serve that was thrown by either one of these pitchers this afternoon. At least that was the way it looked to me. It didn't start out as a bad hit but it broke so sharply that it made Gary look bad didn't you think so?
- 1:07:19Well here we go. Give me Ripple.
- 1:07:21Right fielder first man up. Ball one.
- 1:07:24Curve ball was outside.
- 1:07:27Last time up Ripple fly to left field.
- 1:07:33Sokert has moved back over the center track. Joe DiMaggio has moved over right center field.
- 1:07:39Strike.
- 1:07:40Ball. Ball one strike one.
- 1:07:49Let's see Gomez pitching.
- 1:07:51Drive down to left it's foul.
- 1:07:53Goer goes up from the cloud there. Some of the fans were on a different angle than we are.
- 1:08:01Takes a little longer to see whether that ball is curving foul or not.
- 1:08:04Alright it's strike two and ball one.
- 1:08:07First half of the fifth inning no score is yet.
- 1:08:10Each of the teams the Giants and Yanks have made one hit.
- 1:08:15Ball two a fast ball that knocked Jimmy Ripple down.
- 1:08:20That's the first ball of the product that's knocked down this afternoon getting out of the way of the ball.
- 1:08:26Ball two and strike two.
- 1:08:31Lefty Gomez pitching. Bill Dickey catching.
- 1:08:34Two and two. The foul back.
- 1:08:37And the copy remains two and two.
- 1:08:40Ripple got a piece of a good curve ball from Gomez that time.
- 1:08:44Well fixed ball. It was breaking over the outside corner.
- 1:08:54Bump fire crossed out a new ball.
- 1:08:56Gave it to Dickey. Dickey shot it down the wall.
- 1:08:58The ball got some dirt.
- 1:08:59Rupped it up and now Olemsby has asked for the ball again.
- 1:09:03Crosses out another ball. He's telling Bill Dickey now stop throwing that ball in the dirt.
- 1:09:12That's a little play by the boys. Nothing serious.
- 1:09:16Yanks threw that ball around the infield.
- 1:09:18Now Gomez has it and we're ready to go again.
- 1:09:23Jimmy Ripple. The hitter.
- 1:09:26There's a face-off in the way.
- 1:09:27Field of line five.
- 1:09:29Rans out there.
- 1:09:30Selthorpe has it.
- 1:09:31The Cholest is the second. Ripple stopping it first.
- 1:09:34Second giant hit of the afternoon.
- 1:09:38That's out two and two.
- 1:09:40Lefty Gomez came in there with a straight ball inside.
- 1:09:43Ripple pulled away and pulled the ball with it to right field for a face-off.
- 1:09:49Kelly McCarthy coming up. First baseman.
- 1:09:56Dickey's a pretty cool boy.
- 1:09:58Thompson throws left-handed.
- 1:10:00Last time up. Play to Dickey.
- 1:10:03First pitch.
- 1:10:04Money-wise it's played a beautiful stop by Bill Dickey.
- 1:10:06Ball one.
- 1:10:09It was a third ball that started to break over the outside corner.
- 1:10:12By the time it was finished it was on the outside of the right-handed battered box.
- 1:10:16Here it comes. Ball two. Again it's outside.
- 1:10:25You'll notice from the yelling that there are a lot of giant fans here at Yankee Stadium this afternoon.
- 1:10:31There's the counter down.
- 1:10:33It keeps on going.
- 1:10:35Field. And Ripple has found the second.
- 1:10:37There's the throw. The throw is cut off by Kosehni.
- 1:10:39Ripple goes to third.
- 1:10:41And McCarthy stops it first.
- 1:10:45That was a hot pass between Lozari and Kelly.
- 1:10:48Lozari coming over fast.
- 1:10:51It was scored as a face hit. A face hit for McCarthy.
- 1:10:56A hard ground ball that Lozari came over.
- 1:10:58He was able to touch that ball but unable to hold it.
- 1:11:01Ball rolled on out to right field.
- 1:11:03This is the first scoring front of the afternoon.
- 1:11:05The Giants have runners on first and third.
- 1:11:07Nobody out. Hank Gusman, Kyuso coming up.
- 1:11:10The pitcher again. McCarthy is on first.
- 1:11:12Ripple is on third base.
- 1:11:13Gomez pitching. Hank Kyuso up.
- 1:11:16That was a pitch out.
- 1:11:19Ripple was too far off third base.
- 1:11:21Perhaps the Yankees were expecting a squeeze play or something that time.
- 1:11:25Anyway, I think he wanted to find out.
- 1:11:27And inside face ball he called for a pitch out.
- 1:11:30Here it is.
- 1:11:32The ball upstairs. Strike.
- 1:11:34Ball one. And strike one.
- 1:11:36Gusman, Kyuso. The Giants catch it.
- 1:11:38The white hand batter.
- 1:11:39Last time up he played to right field.
- 1:11:45First half of the fifth inning.
- 1:11:47No score as yet.
- 1:11:49And the Giants have runners on first and third.
- 1:11:51Ripple on third. McCarthy on first.
- 1:11:55Ball one. Strike one.
- 1:11:56Here it is. Strike two.
- 1:11:59How beautifully pitched ball.
- 1:12:00Right under the hand with the bat.
- 1:12:02Over the inside corner with Hank Kyuso taking a terrific cut.
- 1:12:06It's strike two and ball one.
- 1:12:10Johnny McCarthy staying pretty close to first base.
- 1:12:14Luke Gehry holding him on there.
- 1:12:17Here it is.
- 1:12:19The long drive to right field going foul.
- 1:12:22It is. It's foul in the stands and the comp remains two and one.
- 1:12:28Hank Kyuso reaching outside for that pitch.
- 1:12:34Yankees across that ball around the infield.
- 1:12:37Not very rapidly but he swallows them stealing the ball.
- 1:12:41And Yankee infield is playing back.
- 1:12:44So they give up that run on third base apparently.
- 1:12:47Here's the pitch.
- 1:12:48Another foul.
- 1:12:50That was upstairs.
- 1:12:52Upstairs is the back of first base.
- 1:12:54Gusman, Kyuso the batter. It's strike two and ball one.
- 1:12:58Let's take a look at that picture for you.
- 1:13:00Second base combination.
- 1:13:01Cosetti and Lozare are playing pretty deep.
- 1:13:04Head ball is playing deep enough.
- 1:13:06Gehry gets right in the bag holding McCarthy there.
- 1:13:09Gomez tosses over to Gehry.
- 1:13:12Going to have Harden.
- 1:13:15That's Johnny McCarthy. Nobody's in there.
- 1:13:19It's strike two and ball one.
- 1:13:21Kyuso up. Gomez stretches.
- 1:13:22Here it is.
- 1:13:24The foul ball down to Cosetti.
- 1:13:25Cosetti to Lozare out at second.
- 1:13:27Harden throws the double play.
- 1:13:28And Ripple crosses the plate.
- 1:13:30And they got that.
- 1:13:31Ripple on third base.
- 1:13:32McCarthy on first.
- 1:13:33Man Kyuso hits the ground ball to Cosetti.
- 1:13:36Cosetti picked it up.
- 1:13:37Cross to Lozare.
- 1:13:38Getting McCarthy.
- 1:13:39Lozare to Gehry.
- 1:13:40Getting Man Kyuso.
- 1:13:41Double play and the score.
- 1:13:43The Giants won.
- 1:13:44The Yankees nothing.
- 1:13:50Now we have Burgess Whitehead coming up.
- 1:13:52The Giants second base.
- 1:13:53The Whitehead batter.
- 1:13:54Last time up he was out short to first.
- 1:13:56The pitch right down the alley.
- 1:13:58A cold strike.
- 1:14:00Lefty Gomez you know.
- 1:14:02The fans throughout the circuit haven't appreciated
- 1:14:04the fireball he possesses.
- 1:14:05But he's got a lot of them.
- 1:14:07Outside and it's a ball.
- 1:14:08Ball one and strike one.
- 1:14:12Many of the ball players have said that Gomez has a ball.
- 1:14:15He throws just quickly and this bastard Bob fellow with Lefty Bob goes.
- 1:14:19Ball one and strike one.
- 1:14:21There's a long smash to Whitefield.
- 1:14:23It's fouled by two yards down the Whitefield corner.
- 1:14:26Again the fans jump to their feet.
- 1:14:28And that line's smashed by Burgess Whitehead.
- 1:14:33I believe we've had more shots down the bow lines in this particular game.
- 1:14:36And they gave it to them in the long time.
- 1:14:38Is that right?
- 1:14:39Yeah you don't think so.
- 1:14:41Ready to go again.
- 1:14:42Gomez has the glove off for a moment.
- 1:14:44And the counters strike two and ball one.
- 1:14:46First half of the fifth inning.
- 1:14:47The Giants batting two outs.
- 1:14:48Nobody on.
- 1:14:49The wind up.
- 1:14:51There's a face block over Gehry's head down to the Whitefield corner.
- 1:14:54The ball counts off the wall.
- 1:14:56He's going to second there's the foul.
- 1:14:58He goes into second standing up.
- 1:15:00And the first extra face hit of the World Series in 1937.
- 1:15:04And the third giant hit of this inning.
- 1:15:06First half of the fifth.
- 1:15:08Now we have Carl Hubbell.
- 1:15:10The Giants hits are coming up.
- 1:15:13That was a mighty wall up by Burgess Whitehead.
- 1:15:16A line drive that was about 15 feet over the head of first baseman Luke Gehry.
- 1:15:20And the ball going down into the Whitefield corner.
- 1:15:23He's got the barrier down there.
- 1:15:24Two hundred and twenty-six feet from home plate.
- 1:15:26And a foul to George E. Selkirk.
- 1:15:28But it was ample time for Whitehead.
- 1:15:30Three second base standing up.
- 1:15:33Fourth hit of the ball game.
- 1:15:34The third hit of the first half of the fifth inning for the National League Giants.
- 1:15:39Here's the pitch to Hubbell.
- 1:15:40He hits the first ball.
- 1:15:42Down the foul.
- 1:15:43Ryan McInnis foul.
- 1:15:44Listen Paul, I don't want the radio on.
- 1:15:46I should think that.
- 1:15:47You tell me about that drive.
- 1:15:48That one just glistened.
- 1:15:50It looked like it.
- 1:15:51And then when it died it's gone.
- 1:15:53That's been going on all afternoon.
- 1:15:55Right down those foul lines on both sides of the field.
- 1:15:59Well, it was so good that Carl Hubbell was all the way down the first on his way to second anyway.
- 1:16:06One thing I don't like about radio announcements is to kitch out, you know.
- 1:16:09Make you believe that there's no chance of a base hit when there isn't.
- 1:16:13Here's the pitch.
- 1:16:21Don't forget.
- 1:16:22That's a pounding ball to Gehrig.
- 1:16:23Gehrig comes up with it.
- 1:16:25Dips on the bag for the put out.
- 1:16:26That's all for the Giants in the fifth inning.
- 1:16:29One run, three hits and no error.
- 1:16:31We completed four and a half innings of this first game of the Blue Ribbon Classic.
- 1:16:34This is Tom Manning speaking.
- 1:16:36I've enjoyed it thoroughly working with you, Warren, and broadcasting to you, the radio audience.
- 1:16:40And the remaining part of the ball game will be broadcast by Red Barber of Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 1:16:46But before that comes in, Warren Brown.
- 1:16:48All right, Tom.
- 1:16:49Well, we certainly had a little excitement in that inning.
- 1:16:52And looking back at it, it was a good thing that Joe McCarty, the rest of the Yankees,
- 1:16:57decided to play his infield back for the double play and sort of spot the Giants that one run.
- 1:17:03They thought after a white hit, two base hits came along.
- 1:17:06They weren't too out at the time and it looked as though the Giants were on their way to a big inning.
- 1:17:12The interesting thing about the inning was that those two hits which started it were both made by left-hand hitters.
- 1:17:19And both of them were able to pull the ball in the right field.
- 1:17:22And doing that off the left-hand pitcher Gomez, that would indicate that maybe they are gradually catching up with lefty.
- 1:17:29He was hit rather hard in that inning.
- 1:17:31And of course he was very fortunate in one way that there was only one run short.
- 1:17:36And one run, as we all know, against the Yankees is not supposed to be much run.
- 1:17:39However, they don't see Hubble every day.
- 1:17:42All right, Red, glad to see you down here.
- 1:17:44Well, thanks a lot, Warren.
- 1:17:45And it is me to say I'm glad to be here.
- 1:17:48One and nothing save for the Giants, but the Yankees up in the last of the fifth inning, call Hubble.
- 1:17:53Doesn't have to have anyone tell him that he has a lead of one run.
- 1:17:55He's used to having to work that way with the Giants.
- 1:17:57He's pitching now to Hope, who hits the first pitch high and short out in the left center.
- 1:18:02Wachtell backs back, drives everyone away, waste hundred, and takes it.
- 1:18:06No hold.
- 1:18:07The right-hand hitter went after Hubble's first pitch,
- 1:18:09locked it up to Dick Wachtell who went back into short left center field.
- 1:18:13And it is one up, one away, last of the fifth inning.
- 1:18:16Hubble has now retired the last 12 Yankees in a row.
- 1:18:20So far he's pitching a one-hitter.
- 1:18:22It is one and nothing save for the Giants.
- 1:18:25Gohm has retired 11 Giants in a row before Ruppel,
- 1:18:28first up in the fifth inning single to start off New York one-run inning.
- 1:18:32The only score so far in the 1937 World Series.
- 1:18:35Up there now is George Selkirk, strong left-hand batter, takes outside, all one.
- 1:18:40A curve thrown by left-handed pitcher to a left-hand hitter that broke off just around the knee.
- 1:18:46Selkirk, pitching up to the thousands, looks as short as a little.
- 1:18:49He's turned toward right field.
- 1:18:52The Giants are playing him as a full hitter, out of defense deep and pulled around toward right.
- 1:18:55Hubble out of his sixth delivered.
- 1:18:57This one's a curve low outside under the knee, so ball through.
- 1:19:00Do nothing to trickle-toe Selkirk, the young man who has perhaps the hottest spot ever to fill in baseball
- 1:19:07when it was his job to take over right field when Dave Rue hung up his spikes as far as the Yankees were concerned.
- 1:19:16Selkirk, coming at six, lays it down once, twice, Hubble sets in with it.
- 1:19:20He swung on and missed the slight one.
- 1:19:22Selkirk didn't like that one.
- 1:19:24After he swung and didn't get it, he beat it heavy up to the bat down off the plate as if to say,
- 1:19:29there was my Carson Kitchin, I didn't play him again with it.
- 1:19:33One out, nobody on.
- 1:19:35Last of the fifth, Giants leading one to nothing.
- 1:19:38Hubble down, ball, ball, three.
- 1:19:42Just lifting the outside.
- 1:19:45Hubble has given us a sight of that famous scoop ball just one time, that is, it really counts this afternoon.
- 1:19:52The one time he exploded it was when he struck out Gerrick in the fourth inning.
- 1:20:00Hubble taking his time, looking into the dirt now after getting the sign,
- 1:20:03straight it up, swing it straight, he's down with a great left bound, the fifth is one,
- 1:20:07three and two, that is a change of pace curve ball, lifting its way down in there.
- 1:20:18Now every ball that looks a little backwards thrown by Hubble is his screw ball
- 1:20:21because he throws that resort with a lot of his curve breaking down with sail.
- 1:20:26When you're under to see that screw ball, you know it.
- 1:20:28The pitch is, it's a high fly ball into short light field,
- 1:20:33back to second base from the whitehead, under comes Ruppel, and Ruppel for the catch.
- 1:20:39That's one about two miles, one up and one down.
- 1:20:42Whitehead was all the way back out in a pretty fair piece of right field.
- 1:20:47He had to make up his mind, first if he had taken, then second if he wouldn't.
- 1:20:50Ruppel, waiting right there, came in for the kill.
- 1:20:56Doorway for the Yankees, last of the fifth inning, Giants out front one to nothing.
- 1:21:00The winner is Poonamus Harry.
- 1:21:03Ed McCloskey, drive through him in the fifth inning, most important base hit of the afternoon.
- 1:21:07Throwing that set Ruppel around the third.
- 1:21:10Harry in a crouch, doesn't get sick sharply, red hand matter, swings and falls it into the dirt.
- 1:21:17Justin and Kuzo retrieve, strike one.
- 1:21:22We have both pitches left-handers today, and both of them flirting with Lady Luck as both are wearing eleven.
- 1:21:29However, the names cannot smile both ways at the same time.
- 1:21:33Ruppel has never lost an opening World Series game, and Gomez has never lost a World Series game.
- 1:21:37Somebody is going to get hurt before this day is over.
- 1:21:41Ruppel pitching to the very, falls right through, he picks up the inside corner just under the letter.
- 1:21:46Right over the short rib.
- 1:21:50Nothing in two, two out, nobody on.
- 1:21:54Last of the fifth inning, Giants are hit one to nothing.
- 1:21:57Not field sharp at one left.
- 1:21:59Poonamus Harry is an out-not-full hitter.
- 1:22:01The pitch is into the dirt in front of the plate, four to one.
- 1:22:06The first time the Pupils has thrown anything that looked wildly.
- 1:22:09However, that's not a wild pitch.
- 1:22:11A wild pitch is only so scored when there's a runner on base to advance and take advantage of it.
- 1:22:17Just four to one.
- 1:22:19One and two.
- 1:22:22The Pupils have been down to the last thirteen Yankees in a row.
- 1:22:25They have not just one hit, one base on ball coming in the first inning.
- 1:22:29First third of the first inning.
- 1:22:33Up into his sling and fetch, the limbers outside occur the dimethicum down and in to a right-hand hitter thrown by a left-hander.
- 1:22:39Two and two.
- 1:22:42Now in shortstop, Ruppelbach's thick cocktail, visiting with the juniper, putting his cap down.
- 1:22:49Melon, a reformed right fielder who's done a great job at third base, threw a little dirt, threw that at the rain around him.
- 1:22:57He's put over pretty close to the foul line.
- 1:22:59Whitehead is over almost back to second base.
- 1:23:02There's a two-two pitch.
- 1:23:03One on the missed hit, right three.
- 1:23:06That's the third strikeout for Carl Hubbell.
- 1:23:09As for the first time pitching with a one-round lead, he makes it look just that much better.
- 1:23:15Bob has now retired the last 14 men in the row.
- 1:23:19We pause for station identification.
- 1:23:35Back at the Yankee Stadium and in the NBC post at the top of the stand looking over the World Series.
- 1:23:42The long point about Hubbell now, since Red has told you how he's been throwing everybody down since the first inning,
- 1:23:49is that in these latter states it seems to me he's making a Yankee hit that bad ball.
- 1:23:54That last pitch on which Tony Lacerri struck out wasn't a very good pitch, but he lashed at it rather wildly.
- 1:24:01That would indicate to me that Hubbell has the boys on a gift.
- 1:24:04Nothing but a break is going to beat him so far, but we'll see.
- 1:24:08All right then.
- 1:24:09Back to wide. It's the top of the job, batting order, after the sixth inning.
- 1:24:13Joe Moore coming up for his third time, and he so far hasn't gotten the ball out the infield.
- 1:24:17Hitting left-handed, he takes outside, just missing by a hair for ball one.
- 1:24:22Joe first up in this ball game, rounded out to Gary on the sifted, then gets back to Gomez in the third inning.
- 1:24:28The pitch, strike one, call.
- 1:24:32One and one.
- 1:24:34Joe Moore standing deep in batter's box and goes over to catch a Bill Dickey.
- 1:24:37He's down his crouch, not straightened up since he's not at the target.
- 1:24:40Swung on and followed into the upper deck of the stands and back on third base.
- 1:24:44Going for a high outside pitch.
- 1:24:47Joe didn't pull it enough, and it's one and two.
- 1:24:50First man up in the sixth inning.
- 1:24:52Gomez pitching behind now as the Giants lead him one to nothing.
- 1:24:57The outfield is toward right.
- 1:24:59Moore swings, hits a right back to the middle, safely through into the center field.
- 1:25:03One single, flank pass to Mount Dover, second out into the center field for hit number five
- 1:25:08for the Giants and hit number six of this first game of the 1937 World Series.
- 1:25:14Joe Moore, singles right through the middle.
- 1:25:17And with nobody out for New York, top of the sixth, the Giants already ahead one to nothing.
- 1:25:22Moore leads down on first.
- 1:25:24Gary has the ball in the inside corner, and Nick Bartell, who got the first inning of the series, has one to do his up.
- 1:25:29Takes inside, both against him, ball one.
- 1:25:32Bartell on the back ball, just under the waist on the inside.
- 1:25:36Bartell stands, turned toward right field, and when he steps in on the pitch, he goes for a short.
- 1:25:42Gomez delivers.
- 1:25:43Bartell swinging, hits a high fly ball into right field.
- 1:25:46Zirkirk waiting in the middle of the track for it, and has it.
- 1:25:49Halfway down to second, Joe Moore trying to have the catch and retreat back to third base.
- 1:25:55One out, top of the sixth.
- 1:25:59Coming up is Melvin Atkins, who was a New York Giants driker at the age of 17, as he's been ever since.
- 1:26:10Atkins stands just as close to Captain Dickie as he can get.
- 1:26:14After he's gone right, Mel swings and misses, and he took his cut.
- 1:26:17One that came down under the shoulders on the inside.
- 1:26:20And then hitter up against a left-handed pitcher.
- 1:26:24Gomez drives up to left here, rubbing it across his shirt.
- 1:26:26Takes the sign hurdly, sets in position, goes out of the shoulder.
- 1:26:29Fast ball wide, and it's one and one.
- 1:26:32One away, Joe Moore, very fleet, nose is way around the face, is leading down on first.
- 1:26:38Hocking Luke Gehrig, the endurance player of all baseball, both the corner against him.
- 1:26:43Luke, a coaching backer first, resists on his strike two hold.
- 1:26:48A neat sharp foot down just above the knee.
- 1:26:53You see these fast balls thrown by Gomez, and then you look at him.
- 1:26:57Splendor Willoway, bending himself into a punch with BK-23.
- 1:27:00You wonder where he gets to strike.
- 1:27:01Not swinging, it's a high foul.
- 1:27:03Up and back into the upper deck.
- 1:27:06Yankee Stadium has the ground floor, the first level, then a mezzanine, and then a still higher upper deck.
- 1:27:15So it's three floors of spectators.
- 1:27:18Not quite a sellout.
- 1:27:20A few hundred seats are left.
- 1:27:24A field quarter right on Knot, who leans back one under the chin.
- 1:27:28Now the level's off at two and two.
- 1:27:31One away, here in the top of the sixth.
- 1:27:33Gomez looks not too good to scoreboard to check himself.
- 1:27:41Not waiting.
- 1:27:42Two-two pitches, swung on, lifted, high and foul.
- 1:27:46Coming back underneath it, over by the giant dugout, and makes the catch.
- 1:27:50One step out in front of the giant bench.
- 1:27:54Resting in there, Fox, right in front of New York's dugout.
- 1:27:59Now, that's two away in the top of the sixth.
- 1:28:01Joe Moore, who opened up with a single through the middle, is still at first base.
- 1:28:06Hank Leiber, who's been given chance after chance by Bill Gerry,
- 1:28:10who's received another strong vote of confidence from Boss Bill by starting him
- 1:28:14in this first of the 1937 Fall Classic Games, now coming up for his third time.
- 1:28:21Leiber was struck out by Gomez to end the first inning.
- 1:28:26Then he pops up to second base in the fourth to his area.
- 1:28:30Now he's up for his third trip, 0 for 2.
- 1:28:32The off-field deep were out to a left.
- 1:28:34Swinging fouls it straight back onto the screen.
- 1:28:36Spike one.
- 1:28:38Hank, Dick, Blonde.
- 1:28:42Look at him, nobody has to tell you that he was one time a fullback.
- 1:28:46He built that way.
- 1:28:48Right hand hitter, who cocktails that wall,
- 1:28:50grab and swings from his heels on up and out.
- 1:28:54Two away, and Joe Moore under going anything, leading down off first.
- 1:28:57270 feet away.
- 1:28:58Leiber steps back out of the box.
- 1:28:59Berg and Gomez taking too much time.
- 1:29:02Lifted, very, very nervous.
- 1:29:03The first attempt to the shuttle.
- 1:29:04He knows they're both left-handed.
- 1:29:05Delivers outside.
- 1:29:07One and one.
- 1:29:10The ball's leaking down.
- 1:29:12The bus is quite even close.
- 1:29:14Leiber steps back out of the box.
- 1:29:15Picks up a little dirt in his right hand.
- 1:29:17Now sets.
- 1:29:18He stands right up against the plate.
- 1:29:19Feet wide spread.
- 1:29:21That punt way back.
- 1:29:22Now over his right shoulder.
- 1:29:23He swings and it's a long foul.
- 1:29:25He's a cry on him to a left.
- 1:29:27Holds back on Rick and makes it.
- 1:29:30That's all for the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:29:34And for the Yankees, coming in for the last of the sixth.
- 1:29:37The Giants lead 1-0.
- 1:29:39As Carl, Carl Hubbell starts pacing out toward the mound.
- 1:29:43End of the mic, Warren Brown.
- 1:29:45All right, Red.
- 1:29:46I was going to pay particular attention to that last half inning
- 1:29:50because it was the one in which Gomez had to pitch
- 1:29:53after he was rough-house a little bit just before that.
- 1:29:57And when Joe Moore, another left-hand hitter,
- 1:29:59went off with that single to the infield and out in the center field,
- 1:30:04I began to wonder whether Gomez was losing his stuff or not.
- 1:30:08However, Lefty is still out there battling them because he recovered.
- 1:30:12And while the Giants have one run off him,
- 1:30:14they certainly haven't distinguished themselves any more
- 1:30:16than the Yankees themselves have against the pitching of Carl Hubbell.
- 1:30:20Gomez is still the effective pitcher and a great pitcher,
- 1:30:23and there's been nothing happened in this game that this proved that.
- 1:30:26As he goes through his work out there, as Red told you,
- 1:30:30he seems to be a little more busy than Hubbell is.
- 1:30:34Hubbell is certainly a very calm sort of a person,
- 1:30:38and playing behind that one-run lead, he has the advantage.
- 1:30:41All right, Red.
- 1:30:44The applause greets the appearance of Lefty Gomez
- 1:30:48as he steps up to hit against Hubbell first up in the last of the sixth inning.
- 1:30:52Hubbell out there pitching to protect his one-to-nothing advantage.
- 1:30:56Gomez hitting left-handed.
- 1:30:59Thrown out.
- 1:31:00Whitehead to McCarthy.
- 1:31:01He's got the time up.
- 1:31:02He ducks, hits the dirt as one comes right in at the point of his shoulder.
- 1:31:05All one.
- 1:31:08Well, that certainly wouldn't be the accolade that one pitcher gives another,
- 1:31:12but at any rate it was a warm salutation.
- 1:31:16As the boys say, Gomez was low-pitched.
- 1:31:19He had to pull his ears in in a hurry in order to keep them both.
- 1:31:22Up now, drying off his hands, rubbing the dirt off of them.
- 1:31:26Van Cusso doesn't look at all sympathetic.
- 1:31:29Sweating down in his crouch now, Danza.
- 1:31:34Gomez, dry it off his hands.
- 1:31:36He couldn't get to the white dry rubbing along his uniform.
- 1:31:38One of the Giants threw them the Giant Patters Roshan Bag.
- 1:31:41They used it and then tossed it back.
- 1:31:43Ball one, of course.
- 1:31:44Out the little court left.
- 1:31:45Up the cheeks.
- 1:31:46High inside.
- 1:31:47Ball two.
- 1:31:49Thank you, So.
- 1:31:50Turns over that ball.
- 1:31:52Comes by a long three.
- 1:31:54Well, examines it.
- 1:31:55Takes it out of play.
- 1:31:56And another one's put in.
- 1:31:57Turns right back to Hubbard.
- 1:32:00Two-nothing to Gomez.
- 1:32:01First up, last to sixth inning.
- 1:32:04The Giants lead the Yankees one to nothing.
- 1:32:06Got that run.
- 1:32:07Hubbard to fifth.
- 1:32:09Hubbard to third.
- 1:32:10The last 14 Yankees in a row.
- 1:32:14Hubbard delivers two-nothing.
- 1:32:15Inside and high for the ball three.
- 1:32:19Hubbard is behind on his control now for the first time since he walked for Zaddy.
- 1:32:25First up against him in the ball game.
- 1:32:30Earl Combs coaching back of third.
- 1:32:34Coaching back of first.
- 1:32:35Fletcher back of third.
- 1:32:36Both of them setting out a hoop no more.
- 1:32:40Gomez trying to play from behind.
- 1:32:42Ahead three-nothing.
- 1:32:43Hub comes in and gets it.
- 1:32:45The automatic strike.
- 1:32:46Three-and-one.
- 1:32:47Just above the knees.
- 1:32:51Mellott playing up close, about third.
- 1:32:57Up charge three-one.
- 1:32:59And registers.
- 1:33:00Right two-goal.
- 1:33:04Up behind three-nothing.
- 1:33:05Has thrown his last two pitches right through there.
- 1:33:08Pick up his cap for a moment.
- 1:33:09Wipes the first-race milk for his ball out.
- 1:33:11It's a hot, muggy, steaming sort of an afternoon.
- 1:33:14The way he was sitting in the upper deck of a double ball out.
- 1:33:19Up ready for the three-two pitch.
- 1:33:21Aims it.
- 1:33:22It's swung on and crawled tipped back.
- 1:33:23First time that Gomez has offered it one.
- 1:33:26Up this time, first and the last of the sixth.
- 1:33:29A few balls put in the way of third baseman Ott.
- 1:33:33Coming it up.
- 1:33:34Walks calmly over toward the mound.
- 1:33:38There are two rather cool customers.
- 1:33:40Ott at third.
- 1:33:41Up along the mound.
- 1:33:42Another cool one is Mancuso under that back.
- 1:33:45Right side of the infield, talking it up between them.
- 1:33:47A healthy and white head.
- 1:33:49A easy swinging stretch.
- 1:33:50He doesn't wind up.
- 1:33:51Delivers.
- 1:33:52Low end sign for ball four.
- 1:33:57Ovele has given up two walks.
- 1:33:59Gomez hasn't walked in a while.
- 1:34:01And both times Ovele has walked a Yankee.
- 1:34:04He has dabbed the old baseball axiom that the first counter-up to the inning is fatal.
- 1:34:10And that's Ovele passing Gomez.
- 1:34:12His opposing set your first up from the last to sixth.
- 1:34:14Puts the potential to hang on on first with nobody else.
- 1:34:20Now let's see how the Yankees go about trying to get back this one run.
- 1:34:26One run through the season hasn't meant anything at all to the Yankees.
- 1:34:30But one run against Hubbell in a short series such as the World Series can mean a lot.
- 1:34:35After all, when a ball game is over, one run is a whole lot if you haven't got it.
- 1:34:40Gomez leading down on first not very far.
- 1:34:44Frank Crisetti, the leadoffer is up there.
- 1:34:46He's been on once for the walk.
- 1:34:47First inning.
- 1:34:49I feel he's pulled around toward left.
- 1:34:50His right hand hitter.
- 1:34:52There's a throw down to first.
- 1:34:53Out of time.
- 1:34:54This goes right outside for ball one.
- 1:35:00Gomez ran down on first a little bit.
- 1:35:02And when Mancuso took that outside pitch and threw to first,
- 1:35:05it was cut off by McCarthy who had run in anticipating a bunt on the part of Crisetti.
- 1:35:11So even if Gomez had been a long way off first, which he was, there was nobody at first base to tag him.
- 1:35:18Hots pulled up, stepped back to grass at third.
- 1:35:20Right hand pulled up on the baseline at second.
- 1:35:22There's an attempted bunt which is fouled back onto the screen.
- 1:35:25One and one.
- 1:35:26Frank Crisetti with a high, piercing voice.
- 1:35:31He'll be heard from short regardless of the size of the crowd.
- 1:35:35Up there, hitting right-handed.
- 1:35:37Counts one and one.
- 1:35:38Mancuso.
- 1:35:41Pause for time, walks out through the mound,
- 1:35:43talking to Hubble.
- 1:35:44And now both men of the Giant Battery have their caps off
- 1:35:47and both are rubbing the beads of perspiration off of their faces.
- 1:35:51Mancuso with a great big handkerchief.
- 1:35:54Now he's tucked it back in his pocket.
- 1:35:56Comes dumping, startlingly, back of the plate.
- 1:35:59Swarming little dustman, Mancuso.
- 1:36:04It's been a lot more to the Giant pitching
- 1:36:06than most people realize the last few years.
- 1:36:10Defense pulled up on the infield.
- 1:36:12Outfield, usual depth and around toward left.
- 1:36:14Crisetti up, counts one and one.
- 1:36:15Nobody out.
- 1:36:16Gomez off first.
- 1:36:18Up pitches.
- 1:36:19There's another attempted bunt and it's fouled back.
- 1:36:21Strike two.
- 1:36:24Hubs come right in with these last two pitches.
- 1:36:26Crisetti has not been able to lay them down.
- 1:36:30One and two.
- 1:36:32Nobody out.
- 1:36:34One deck to hit after Crisetti is wrong.
- 1:36:37Hubs naturally going to be trying to throw a double play ball right now.
- 1:36:41There's been one double play in the ball game.
- 1:36:43That was hit in two by Mancuso as he got credit for batting in the one run so far of the struggle in the fifth inning.
- 1:36:49Run it on first and third.
- 1:36:51Scores one to nothing to the Giants.
- 1:36:54Ball game here in Yankee Stadium.
- 1:36:56A lot of a cloudy, smoky afternoon.
- 1:36:58Crisetti waiting now behind one and two.
- 1:37:00Up pitches.
- 1:37:01Crisetti swings.
- 1:37:02A space hit.
- 1:37:04Joe Martex on the first bounce.
- 1:37:06Gomez holds that second.
- 1:37:07A sharp single for Crisetti into left field.
- 1:37:10A long single.
- 1:37:12I imagine the Giants wish now that Crisetti hadn't fouled off those two pitches when he was trying to bunt.
- 1:37:21Pubble after getting 14 straight Yankees.
- 1:37:24Walked Gomez.
- 1:37:26The second pass he's given up.
- 1:37:28Walked Gomez.
- 1:37:29First step from the last of this sixth inning.
- 1:37:31And Crisetti after vainly trying twice to sacrifice.
- 1:37:36Swung on a one-two pitch and hit a clean line drive single to left.
- 1:37:41That's the second hit off Pubble.
- 1:37:44And now the tying run is at second and nobody is out and the batter is red wrong.
- 1:37:48The Giants' defense is pulled in after the second that's going to be a bunt.
- 1:37:51Rof takes high outside.
- 1:37:52Mancuso throws the second and Gomez is safe as the ball gets away from Bartel.
- 1:38:00Mancuso has Gomez picked off second base but his throw gets away from shortstop Bartel.
- 1:38:07And Gomez slides back in and is safe.
- 1:38:10He was absolutely caught off off second base.
- 1:38:13A pitch out coming down to Rof outside for ball one.
- 1:38:18Mancuso throwing to the third base corner of second and Gomez cleanly caught off.
- 1:38:25And it is an error on the play for Bartel, the first error of the series.
- 1:38:31Bartel letting Mancuso throw a getaway when Gomez was caught cleanly off second.
- 1:38:36Error for Bartel.
- 1:38:38And Gomez remains at second base.
- 1:38:48Rof, with left hand get up, standing close to him back of the plate,
- 1:38:51Huff pitches, Rof takes high outside.
- 1:38:53Mancuso threatens to throw it on to second but this time Gomez is glued to the bag.
- 1:38:57He learned his lesson the easy way just now.
- 1:39:04And we're having excitement here in the last of the sixth as the Yankees are threatening to rise into their much-reported power and strike.
- 1:39:14Rof up to match you on deck.
- 1:39:17Huff pitches inside for ball three and Rof at the head.
- 1:39:22Gomez is behind with his control.
- 1:39:26This New York crowd at the moment seems to be a Yankee crowd.
- 1:39:32They're off the way, they are applauding these balls that Hobble is missing the plate with to Red Rock, the Yankee third baseman.
- 1:39:40Nobody outlaps the sixth.
- 1:39:43Presente is at first, Gomez is at second.
- 1:39:47Rof up there, three-nothing.
- 1:39:50Huff comes in and Rof takes strike one call.
- 1:39:55Rof up there, wiggling and dancing.
- 1:39:59There's a man-footed dancer on the San Luis Sahara high nose trying to disconcerting Hob and making him miss his target.
- 1:40:08Hobble in the pitching position, going out of the shoulder.
- 1:40:11There's a bunt foul by Hobb third.
- 1:40:15Three-one pitch, attempted bunt.
- 1:40:17It was fouled off.
- 1:40:19Nine-three and two.
- 1:40:22Hobb walks right back of that mound.
- 1:40:24So this is just batting practice.
- 1:40:26I think that's one of his greatest assets.
- 1:40:29The man is never unnerved.
- 1:40:31I think the way Hobble pitches, especially in times of stress in baseball, is a good lesson for most of us in the everyday world.
- 1:40:38He just very quietly keeps his chin out and keeps going as best he knows how.
- 1:40:46Three-and-two, running feet off first and second.
- 1:40:48Swung on, fouled, right over into the Yankee dugout.
- 1:40:53Still three-and-two.
- 1:40:56Pace is rather slow.
- 1:40:58The Giants become thinkers in a clutch.
- 1:41:02They figure out everything they're going to do, and they're certain that everybody on the ball club knows exactly what the defensive move will be.
- 1:41:11Up trying off that left-hander here.
- 1:41:14Goes with the rosin bag, steps up onto the rubber, rugs his shoulders.
- 1:41:19Now looks down, takes the sign from Mancuso, who's staying in his crouch.
- 1:41:23Rob crouching, left-hander over the plate.
- 1:41:25Huff pitches.
- 1:41:26There's a high foul coming up and back.
- 1:41:28Mancuso coming back, back, cannot get it.
- 1:41:30It lands just back on the screen.
- 1:41:32Still three-and-two.
- 1:41:35Still the old blood pressure.
- 1:41:37Keeps pounding away up there at a baseball high for excitement.
- 1:41:44The Giants drew first blood this afternoon.
- 1:41:46The only blood so far that's been let.
- 1:41:49They got a run in the fifth inning.
- 1:41:51They're leading by that margin, one to nothing.
- 1:41:53However, here in the last of the sixth, a walk, a single, and then an error.
- 1:41:58Allows Yankees to be at first and second and nobody else.
- 1:42:02The three-two counters to Red Rock.
- 1:42:05Up looks around. Gomez leads off second.
- 1:42:07He's letting him down off first.
- 1:42:09Huff pitches, three-two.
- 1:42:11There's stuff in on him.
- 1:42:13It's a hit.
- 1:42:14Gomez pulls up back third base and the bases are loaded.
- 1:42:17A single to left center field.
- 1:42:19And the bases have pulled nobody out in the last of the sixth.
- 1:42:23And now the Tannemaiders, DiMaggio, Kerik, and Dickey, is the program.
- 1:42:39Down in the giant bullpen.
- 1:42:42One of the relief pitches is being warmed up, but he is completely hidden from view.
- 1:42:47So they can't tell you who it is.
- 1:42:49You cannot see in either team's bullpen here at the stadium
- 1:42:53the potential relief pitches as they groom themselves to get ready.
- 1:42:58A single into left center field by Rock.
- 1:43:01And Banshees is ready.
- 1:43:03Second base and Gomez to third.
- 1:43:05They both had to hold to see whether Joe Moore could come in and make the catch which he could.
- 1:43:09Now the bases loaded, nobody out.
- 1:43:12Last of the sixth inning.
- 1:43:14And Joe DiMaggio, Joe DiJo is up there.
- 1:43:17Right-hand hitter, deep wide spread.
- 1:43:19He's spreading right through the middle of batter's box.
- 1:43:23Gomez leading off third.
- 1:43:24Corsetti off second.
- 1:43:25Rock down off first.
- 1:43:27His defense is deep around foot left.
- 1:43:30Huff delivers.
- 1:43:31It's swung on.
- 1:43:32It's a base hit.
- 1:43:34In comes Gomez.
- 1:43:35Corsetti around third.
- 1:43:36He's heading for the plate.
- 1:43:37Two runs are in and run us our own places and second.
- 1:43:41Business has picked up during this first game of the World Series
- 1:44:10in the last of the sixth inning.
- 1:44:12With the bases full and nobody out.
- 1:44:14And the Yankees behind one to nothing.
- 1:44:17DiMaggio, who got the first hit for the Yankees,
- 1:44:20hit a whistling single to left center field.
- 1:44:24And scored Gomez from third and Corsetti from second.
- 1:44:28Sending Rock around to third.
- 1:44:29And when the throw in from center field came to third base,
- 1:44:33DiMaggio running like a deer, made it on the throw in to second.
- 1:44:37So the Yankees go ahead two to one.
- 1:44:39Nobody out and run us on second and third.
- 1:44:41And Bill Terry has walked out to the heart of the dam.
- 1:44:44To hold a personal time grab with Hubbell.
- 1:44:46And Qusso and shortstop Bartell.
- 1:44:49Bill Terry making his first public appearance in the series.
- 1:44:52Comes out from under the shelter of the dugout.
- 1:44:54To the pitcher's mound to talk it over.
- 1:44:59And it's the moment.
- 1:45:02Signals are being relayed to the both end.
- 1:45:09Hubbell is to stay in.
- 1:45:11That's the decision.
- 1:45:12Gehrig is up.
- 1:45:13And he's to be given a deliberate face on ball.
- 1:45:15There's ball one.
- 1:45:17Let's just try to see.
- 1:45:18Luke Gehrig, first base is open.
- 1:45:20Nobody out.
- 1:45:21The Yankees lead two to one.
- 1:45:24And DiMaggio and Rock are on second and third respectively.
- 1:45:28Gehrig will soon be at first.
- 1:45:30And there is ball three.
- 1:45:32A deliberate walk being given to Luke Gehrig.
- 1:45:37Not because they like him, but because they don't want a pitch to him right now.
- 1:45:40There's ball four.
- 1:45:41And Gehrig is purposely put on first.
- 1:45:58And the bases are loaded.
- 1:46:00Put nobody out in the last of the sixth.
- 1:46:02Bill Dickey is up there.
- 1:46:04Bad Bill, as the Yankees call him right now.
- 1:46:08He'll be Sweet William if he delivers.
- 1:46:10The infield is pulled up on the base path.
- 1:46:12The left-hand hitter is Dickey.
- 1:46:13Hubbell pitching.
- 1:46:14Low outside for ball one.
- 1:46:17The Yankees have caught in past the Giants.
- 1:46:20And they're threatening to do still more.
- 1:46:23Here in the last of the sixth of this first game.
- 1:46:25The Giants enter defense right up on the base path.
- 1:46:30Bases jam.
- 1:46:32Blunders at all three points.
- 1:46:34Dickey waiting.
- 1:46:36Takes low for ball two.
- 1:46:39One just run to the knees.
- 1:46:41Ball two.
- 1:46:47Two to one.
- 1:46:49The Yankees in this city series.
- 1:46:54Hubbell.
- 1:46:55One of the toughest spots of his life.
- 1:46:58It's a sweltering hot afternoon.
- 1:47:00Cloudy.
- 1:47:02Hubbell has extra heat applied to him right now at the moment.
- 1:47:04Aside from the weather.
- 1:47:09Dickey waiting.
- 1:47:10He's ahead.
- 1:47:12Two-nothing pitch.
- 1:47:13Swung on as the ground ball.
- 1:47:15The hit box down with the half.
- 1:47:16The cover.
- 1:47:17The bases remain full and the run scores.
- 1:47:19A hit and a miss.
- 1:47:36An infield single by Bill Dickey gets in.
- 1:47:41Throw out.
- 1:47:42Drum third race.
- 1:47:43And the Yankees go ahead.
- 1:47:45Three to one.
- 1:47:46The bases still are loaded.
- 1:47:48And yet no one is out in the last of the six.
- 1:47:51That was a ground ball.
- 1:47:52Hit towards second.
- 1:47:53Whitehead.
- 1:47:54Dove on his chest.
- 1:47:55Knocked it down.
- 1:47:56Did not allow it to roll out of the infield.
- 1:47:58But did not make a play on it.
- 1:48:00And now it's Dickey off first.
- 1:48:01Gehrig off second.
- 1:48:03And the match is off third.
- 1:48:04The matter is Cole getting right handed.
- 1:48:07Nobody else.
- 1:48:08High inside.
- 1:48:10Ball one.
- 1:48:11Cole getting right handed.
- 1:48:12Hubbell.
- 1:48:13Great left-hander.
- 1:48:16And a great kill in front of him.
- 1:48:22Three to one now.
- 1:48:23And the Yankees are pressing their advantage.
- 1:48:25Riding hard.
- 1:48:27Polk in a crouch.
- 1:48:28Swings and misses.
- 1:48:30One and one.
- 1:48:32Hubbrook with curve end just above his knees on the inside.
- 1:48:43Hubbell.
- 1:48:44Shoulder sagging.
- 1:48:46Passed right into the back.
- 1:48:48Marches his chest.
- 1:48:49Takes a deep breath.
- 1:48:51Polk rather nervous.
- 1:48:53Into a crouch.
- 1:48:55Takes inside.
- 1:48:57Ball two.
- 1:48:58The curve broke off.
- 1:48:59And it's two and one.
- 1:49:03The Yankee siege guns are on the bases.
- 1:49:05DiMaggio at third.
- 1:49:07Gehrig at second.
- 1:49:08And Dickey at first.
- 1:49:09Nobody else.
- 1:49:10Three runs in.
- 1:49:12This is the seventh hitter.
- 1:49:14From the last to the sixth.
- 1:49:18Up comes down.
- 1:49:19There is a ground ball.
- 1:49:20Hits the third.
- 1:49:21The play is to the plate.
- 1:49:22One out.
- 1:49:23A force of home.
- 1:49:24That's the first out.
- 1:49:25From the last to the sixth inning.
- 1:49:27Cole was scored as a fearless choice.
- 1:49:30And there was no play at first base made for him.
- 1:49:33Grounded just to the left.
- 1:49:35Up third based on Malak.
- 1:49:37Who made the pick up.
- 1:49:39Then calmly through to Gus Mantutel standing on home plate.
- 1:49:43To force DiMaggio coming home.
- 1:49:48That's one out.
- 1:49:50The base is still full.
- 1:49:52The matter is Selkirk.
- 1:49:54The eighth Yankee.
- 1:49:55Up here in the last to the sixth.
- 1:49:57Being left handed, turn toward right field.
- 1:49:59Very, very strong and brawny and quite active.
- 1:50:04Infield on the left side up on the bases.
- 1:50:06Almost up to the base pairs on the right.
- 1:50:08Swinging strike one.
- 1:50:10The curve ball broke off the fingers and down on the inside.
- 1:50:13Selkirk went after it and didn't get it.
- 1:50:15Groups of hands together.
- 1:50:19Outfield deep.
- 1:50:20Pulled around toward right.
- 1:50:22Just up on the other knot.
- 1:50:23Right up on the baseline.
- 1:50:25Whiteheads back a step to open the baseline.
- 1:50:28Inside under the chin for a shave and ball one.
- 1:50:31One and one to Selkirk.
- 1:50:33Here in this Danimite laden last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:50:36From the Yankees.
- 1:50:38After having 14 of them go down in order.
- 1:50:44One of the bubbles walked to go mass first up in the sixth with base hits.
- 1:50:48The pitch is a curve which is hit safely through the hole between first and second into right field.
- 1:50:53In comes Gary.
- 1:50:54Around third comes Dickie.
- 1:50:56Heading for the plate and scores.
- 1:50:57Two more runs come in.
- 1:50:59As Selkirk single.
- 1:51:01Turns in two runs to put the Yankees ahead five to one.
- 1:51:04And sends home a round to third base.
- 1:51:07Single to right by Selkirk.
- 1:51:09It's sharply through the hole between first and second.
- 1:51:19And the Yankees are going away.
- 1:51:22They're now in front five to one.
- 1:51:27And Van Cusso walks sadly out to the mound.
- 1:51:31The Hubble is finished.
- 1:51:36Back in the dark resources of the giant bullpen.
- 1:51:39Will come another of Terry's mound crew.
- 1:51:43To assume a burden which apparently was left in the last game of the 1936 series.
- 1:51:52It seems as though we are right back beginning today where we left off last fall.
- 1:51:59The conference out there on the mound.
- 1:52:02Hubble still standing around.
- 1:52:04Whitehead has come in for second.
- 1:52:09Vartel, Van Cusso.
- 1:52:19Harry Gumbott.
- 1:52:21Harry Gumbott.
- 1:52:22The tall young right-hander.
- 1:52:24Is coming in to relieve Paul Hubble.
- 1:52:28Eight of the Yankees faced Hubble in the last of this sixth inning.
- 1:52:33Seven of them got safely on and five of them have scored.
- 1:52:42Harry Gumbott.
- 1:52:46Very tall, making that long walk.
- 1:52:49The bullpen for the giant is hidden in the stands behind right center field.
- 1:52:56He has to make all that distance as he comes into the ball game.
- 1:53:01With the rich he gets pretty well acclimated before he ever gets to the mound.
- 1:53:05Gumbott.
- 1:53:06Number 14.
- 1:53:08Now pitching.
- 1:53:15Gumbott first announced over the last speaker and now Kaufman.
- 1:53:19And it is Dick as he steps to the mound.
- 1:53:21It's Dick Kaufman, the former American Negro.
- 1:53:28Before the relief pitcher came into sight, Gumbott was announced as replacing Hubble.
- 1:53:34But after the pitcher came into sight, it was announced as Kaufman.
- 1:53:41Dick Kaufman, right-hander, who has been prominent as the giant's number one relief man the last couple of years.
- 1:53:49And now Kaufman throwing down to Mancuso.
- 1:53:54You've had so much fireworks lately while Kaufman's living up.
- 1:53:57Why and how have you seen it?
- 1:53:59Well, it seems a long time to go back that far, Ed.
- 1:54:02But I'm still thinking about that play at second base when the ball got away from Dick Bartel after it seemed as though Mancuso had chopped him off.
- 1:54:10And it was amazing the way the Yankees leaped into action after that break,
- 1:54:14which was very definitely the break for which they've been waiting throughout this entire ball game.
- 1:54:20It's also interesting to me to note that when Gomez had his bad inning, which was the fifth,
- 1:54:25he managed to escape from there with one run.
- 1:54:29When it came time for the Yankees to tear after Hubble, one thing or another,
- 1:54:35combined with their own powerful hitting, particularly those singles, which were hit with a great deal of authority,
- 1:54:41certainly ruined his afternoon for them very rapidly.
- 1:54:45There was one possible play in this inning, a play that Whitehead tried to make on the ball Bill Dickey hit down.
- 1:54:54It was a slow hit ball and Whitehead made a noble try for the ball, diving after it,
- 1:54:59but he was unable to get the ball and get it in time to make a play for anyone.
- 1:55:06It seems interesting to me, red, at the present time that we've gone through an inning here with the Yankees making five runs,
- 1:55:12and so far there is no semblance of their patent at home run.
- 1:55:17It's been almost in one of these big innings of the Yankees.
- 1:55:20It seems as though somebody walks up there and hits one out of the park.
- 1:55:24Isn't that your impression of the Yankee big inning?
- 1:55:27Right you are, Warren. And there's also some big stuff brewing down there, which doesn't very often happen.
- 1:55:34Now that mistake about announcing Gumbert as the relief pitcher is causing a fuel roar,
- 1:55:40and I guess you know the technicalities involved.
- 1:55:43Mr. Porsche, go ahead and explain it, Warren.
- 1:55:45Well, after he becomes announced officially as a pitcher, he is definitely the pitcher until at least he throws one ball.
- 1:55:52And when Kaufman appeared on the mound, Art Fletcher, the Yankee coach, immediately went over
- 1:55:57and started complaining to the umpires about it, and the result was there was quite a conference.
- 1:56:02And now we have Gumbert back there.
- 1:56:04Gumbert, Gumbert's hand, now pitching for the Giants.
- 1:56:12So that's the way that thing works out.
- 1:56:14I think that's the first time in World Series history that I've seen anything like that.
- 1:56:18Frequently in baseball games we've seen a pinch hitter announced and go up to the plate.
- 1:56:23For example, a left-handed hitter going up to hit, and a pitching substitution is made,
- 1:56:28whereupon another announcement is made of a right-hand hitter, and the right-hand hitter takes his place at the bat
- 1:56:33without the left-hand hitter having been up there at all.
- 1:56:36But as far back as I can remember, this is the first time we've had a Fletcher in the game
- 1:56:39without doing any more than warming up in the bullpen and walking all that long distance.
- 1:56:44And it certainly is a long distance from that giant bullpen in right field.
- 1:56:49So that now that law and order has been restored again, we really do have Harry Gumbert out there pitching,
- 1:56:56and I congratulate Silvette on detecting that, even though Kaufman got in ahead of him.
- 1:57:02Well, thanks a great deal, Warren. And I guess baseball is like life itself.
- 1:57:07You can never tell just exactly what's going to happen.
- 1:57:09First, Gumbert is announced, and then a correction.
- 1:57:14And apparently that's all there is to it, as most of the folks up here think.
- 1:57:17The conference coming into pitch. And then suddenly a technicality is involved.
- 1:57:22And it involved, was involved, around whether the public address announcer was officially informed
- 1:57:27that Gumbert would pitch. And evidently he was, because that being the case, Gumbert has to pitch.
- 1:57:32Had the announcer himself just on his own authority said Gumbert would pitch, that wouldn't have had any bearing.
- 1:57:38And now up there now is Lazare. But the throw goes over to first base as Gumbert officially goes to work.
- 1:57:45Harry Gumbert, the former Baltimore Oriole, throws again to first base.
- 1:57:52Here's the situation here in the last of the sixth with one man out.
- 1:57:55Selkirk is at first, and Hogg is at third. The Yankees are riding out in front 5-2-1.
- 1:58:03Up there at the plate on the crouch is the very stick. Gumbert delivers inside for ball one.
- 1:58:10And that technically, Gumbert, is in the ball game. He's delivered one pitch to Polly Lazare.
- 1:58:21After the round, what left? The Yankees lead off first and third.
- 1:58:28McCurve floating down in there for call strike one. Lazare looking at it and takes it.
- 1:58:32Johnny hit back to Hubble in the second inning and was properly tossed out at first.
- 1:58:36And then Hubb struck him out in the fifth.
- 1:58:40That was when Hubb wound up his great sequence of 14 straight Yankee victories.
- 1:58:44That was the last of that string.
- 1:58:47The Yankees put on a string of their own here in the last of the sixth.
- 1:58:52There's a slow ball hit through the center base from the right center field.
- 1:58:55The end from third comes home around the third goes Selkirk.
- 1:59:00A change of base was met with a half swing by Tony Lazare who was trying to hit behind the runner.
- 1:59:06And he singled through the middle right underneath Burgess Whitehead who was running up on it.
- 1:59:11And in comes another run and the Yankees are now plus five leading 6-2-1.
- 1:59:16And Gomez, who was burst up in the last of the sixth, is now coming up for a second trip in the last of this inning.
- 1:59:22The tenth Yankee to bat and just one man is out.
- 1:59:28The swing goes right back through the middle by Lazare.
- 1:59:31Which nets in still another Yankee run.
- 1:59:34And Gumbutt, who had to come out and pitch to one man, now has taken out and Kaufman comes in.
- 1:59:39Kaufman, number 14, now pitching for the Giants.
- 1:59:50And now at long last, as the fellow once said,
- 1:59:55Kaufman is in the ball game.
- 2:00:00Dick Kaufman comes into the ball game and as he comes in,
- 2:00:06the Yankees are ahead 6-1.
- 2:00:08Gumbutt pitched to one man, Lazare, who singled and knocked in the Yankees sixth run.
- 2:00:12Up now is Gomez, who was first up in the last of the sixth and then drew a walk.
- 2:00:17A fateful pass. Gomez hitting left-handed, Dick Kaufman, ball rugged right-handed.
- 2:00:24Off first is Lazare, off third, Selkirk.
- 2:00:28Gomez says Kaufman is taking a little too much time, so he stepped back out of the box.
- 2:00:32On to, of course, Paul's time. The outfield, a little toward left.
- 2:00:34Swinging, strike one.
- 2:00:37Kaufman came down with a slant, just above the knees on the inside.
- 2:00:46Gomez chokes that bat just about an inch, pumps it back and forth.
- 2:00:52John Enfield, right up on the base pass.
- 2:00:54Low end side for ball one, right across the shins. One and one.
- 2:01:01Fletcher, jumping up and down, back of third. He's very, very elated.
- 2:01:07Looks as though he's filled with the elixir of life.
- 2:01:10The pitch is low.
- 2:01:13And it's ball two. Two and one.
- 2:01:19Six to one, favor of the Yankees.
- 2:01:26Six runs in the last of the sixth.
- 2:01:28Apparently, that isn't all.
- 2:01:32Gomez on the crouch, takes low, and it's ball three. Three and one.
- 2:01:37Kaufman, punishing a big jeweler backer.
- 2:01:44That's the point of his jaw out there.
- 2:01:46Very belligerently now walks around back of the mound, kicks a little dirt,
- 2:01:49pulls the peak of his cap down snugly over his eyes,
- 2:01:53splits into the black loam topsoil, the Yankee Stadium.
- 2:01:57Looks toward first, toward third. Now to the left, three, one.
- 2:02:00Low for ball four.
- 2:02:01Twice Gomez has walked here in the last of the sixth inning,
- 2:02:04and this reloads the bases.
- 2:02:08Still just one out.
- 2:02:09Gomez, twice up here in the last of the sixth,
- 2:02:12is both times given an anti-off-base to first base.
- 2:02:15This pushes Vasari down to second, and Selkirk down to third.
- 2:02:25Selkirk already at third.
- 2:02:29Macy's ball, one out.
- 2:02:32The matter is, Frank Vasetti, who singles sharply,
- 2:02:38once in this sixth already, up for a second time,
- 2:02:41takes it way outside, ball one.
- 2:02:45A little shortstopper on the Yankees,
- 2:02:48choking that walk up, standing right off the plate, easily balanced.
- 2:02:54Macy's just as full as a tenement house in a busy district.
- 2:03:00Top and right hands are down, and it's swung on and ball tipped back.
- 2:03:04One and one.
- 2:03:07Gomez at first, Vasari at second, Selkirk at third.
- 2:03:12Mancusel goes out to talk to Kaufman.
- 2:03:20Enfield, lazily passing the ball around between themselves.
- 2:03:24This has been a severe jolt to the Giants, this last of the sixth inning.
- 2:03:29And the Yankees are still the Yankees,
- 2:03:32running absolutely according to form on the dope sheet.
- 2:03:36No variations at all.
- 2:03:39Kaufman comes down, Casetti swings.
- 2:03:41It's a fly ball into short left field.
- 2:03:43Up comes Joe Moore on the dead run.
- 2:03:45Andritt makes the catch, and the runners are forced to hold where they are.
- 2:03:48The throw in is cut off, two-thirds of the way toward the plate by third baseman, Malon.
- 2:03:53That's out number two here in the last of the sixth inning.
- 2:03:58Red Ralph, hitting left-handed, steps up.
- 2:04:01Two men gone, here in the last of the sixth.
- 2:04:09Paces four-oh.
- 2:04:21Kaufman drying off the fingers with his right hand.
- 2:04:24Ralph goes there, black cap, down snug around his ears, punches that stick back and forth.
- 2:04:34I feel a little toward right, pitches outside, a change of pace.
- 2:04:37Ball one.
- 2:04:43Ralph, ball set.
- 2:04:47Easily balanced.
- 2:04:49He has one for three this afternoon.
- 2:04:51Takes low inside, ball two.
- 2:04:53Here's Kaufman's fast ball.
- 2:04:55His sights were not quite high enough.
- 2:04:59This vast throng, many, many thousands, here in Yankee Stadium.
- 2:05:04Wiley hilarious.
- 2:05:06And even a foul ball through the first five and a half innings, has sort of settled back.
- 2:05:12Either completely filled to a point of satiation with happiness, or else completely crushed.
- 2:05:17Low inside for ball three.
- 2:05:19And with the bases loaded, Kaufman is behind two red robs.
- 2:05:22He hasn't hit his target once.
- 2:05:29Three and oh.
- 2:05:36He misses once more, walks in a run.
- 2:05:39There's a strike.
- 2:05:41Just throwing the knees on the inside.
- 2:05:43Three-one.
- 2:05:46Ralph stepping back out of the box, steps in again.
- 2:05:49And here's O'Donnell on his crouch, calls for it.
- 2:05:53Run of the lead down very far.
- 2:05:55Now they start streaking off.
- 2:05:57Gomez isn't cutting up down at first.
- 2:05:59He's conserving his energies.
- 2:06:01The pitch outside for ball four on a walk to Ralph with the bases full.
- 2:06:06And in comes another Yankee run.
- 2:06:12Ralph is cleared with batting in.
- 2:06:14That run.
- 2:06:18Seven to one in favor of the Yankees.
- 2:06:24Six runs to the good.
- 2:06:27Selkirk scored on that play.
- 2:06:30Sarri moving down to third and Gomez to second.
- 2:06:33Up now is Joe DiMaggio, swings.
- 2:06:35It's a high-five ball deep out into center field.
- 2:06:38Lieber goes back and pulls it down.
- 2:06:42Well, that's all for the first six innings.
- 2:06:44And it looks like it might be all for the afternoon.
- 2:06:47However, a ball game is never over until the last man is out.
- 2:06:51But first, before anything else is said for Warren Brown,
- 2:06:54we pause for station identification.
- 2:07:09Back at the Yankee Stadium.
- 2:07:11And this ball game coming to you through the National Broadcasting Company
- 2:07:15and its associated stations, I certainly provided a big inning finally.
- 2:07:20After we remained around here for upwards of five and a half innings
- 2:07:24watching quite a pitching duel between lefty Gomez and Kyle Hubbell,
- 2:07:28the Yankees certainly caught up with Hubbell in that last inning
- 2:07:32when they secured six runs and seven hits.
- 2:07:36Not all of them, of course, fall for Hubbell, for he was gone.
- 2:07:40And during the balance of the inning, we had two giant pitchers in there.
- 2:07:44Harry Gumbott, who seemed to come in because of a mistaken identity
- 2:07:48on his way from the bullpen, and Dick Kaufman, who finished up for the game.
- 2:07:53There were a few bases on balls crowded into that inning
- 2:07:56and certainly one break which went against Hubbell at the time he was in there.
- 2:08:01However, full credit must go to the Yankees for the ability
- 2:08:05with which they leaped to the attack once they had an opening.
- 2:08:08And it was the first opening in the game that Hubbell had given him.
- 2:08:11All right, Reds.
- 2:08:13Lefty Gomez is ready now to start the seven, pitching to Jimmy Ripple.
- 2:08:17He does strike one call, short breaking curve just above the knees.
- 2:08:21Ripple has one for two this afternoon.
- 2:08:24He started off what looked to be the Giants' beginning of the fifth for the Singles.
- 2:08:28Takes a little outside, that's one and one.
- 2:08:30Gomez has never lost a World Series ball game.
- 2:08:34And it looks as though he'll still be able to camp on that record for another few hours.
- 2:08:40Seven to one, favor of the Yankees.
- 2:08:42Ripple swinging, foul tips it back.
- 2:08:44Strike two, one and two.
- 2:08:46First giant up from the seventh.
- 2:08:48Yankees ahead seven to one.
- 2:08:50After Ripple, McCarthy, then Mancuso.
- 2:08:54Infield straight away.
- 2:08:56Upper step on the left side.
- 2:08:58Full depth on the right.
- 2:08:59Outfield a couple of steps toward right on Jimmy.
- 2:09:01Full header.
- 2:09:02Swings, there's a five-oh going out into left.
- 2:09:04Pull coming up fast.
- 2:09:06Takes it on the run.
- 2:09:07It's all for Ripple.
- 2:09:10One up, one going to seventh.
- 2:09:13That is McCarthy.
- 2:09:15He has one for two.
- 2:09:17His single through Lazare.
- 2:09:19In the fifth inning, to send Ripple around to third base.
- 2:09:21Jimmy later coming in on Mancuso's double play ball.
- 2:09:25The only run the Giants have.
- 2:09:28McCarthy, a rookie.
- 2:09:30Takes strike one call.
- 2:09:32This has been his rookie year in the big leagues.
- 2:09:35And at the end of his first year in the majors, here he is in the World Series.
- 2:09:38He has one for two at the moment, up for his third time.
- 2:09:40Swings and misses at a curve.
- 2:09:41Strike two.
- 2:09:42Missed that one off the end of his bat.
- 2:09:45They're playing McCarthy, just as they did Ripple as far as the offfield is concerned, toward right.
- 2:09:49Left side of the infield the same.
- 2:09:50And Lazare is a step or so more down toward first.
- 2:09:53High inside.
- 2:09:55On the chest, the ball runs.
- 2:09:56One and two.
- 2:09:57McCarthy.
- 2:09:58Very slender.
- 2:10:03Big building, he sets his mitt.
- 2:10:04The ball is bounced easily back to the mound.
- 2:10:06Gomez traps it.
- 2:10:07It goes over to first.
- 2:10:08That's all for young John.
- 2:10:11Getting back to the box.
- 2:10:13Two up, two gone.
- 2:10:14Top of the seven.
- 2:10:16Hitter is Gus Mancuso.
- 2:10:23Stands back out of that box.
- 2:10:25Takes the meat end of his stick.
- 2:10:27Tracks the dirt off from his spikes.
- 2:10:29Not stepping in.
- 2:10:30Slopes over against the catcher.
- 2:10:32Fences straight away.
- 2:10:33Strike one call.
- 2:10:35A little hook was snapped in just above the knees.
- 2:10:37On the inside.
- 2:10:38Right hand hitter.
- 2:10:41Gomez.
- 2:10:42Long gated slender left hander.
- 2:10:44Delivers.
- 2:10:45Fast ball inside.
- 2:10:46One and one.
- 2:10:50Gomez draws up his knees almost under his chin.
- 2:10:53Clears those arms around his back of him.
- 2:10:54Ties himself up into such a knot you wonder how in the world he ever gets out of.
- 2:10:57Delivers.
- 2:10:58Inside.
- 2:10:59All two.
- 2:11:00Two and one.
- 2:11:03Lefty pitching just as he has all the afternoon.
- 2:11:06Taking the sign.
- 2:11:08And going right to work.
- 2:11:10Takes time out for a blow right now.
- 2:11:12Looks into the dirt.
- 2:11:13As though he were reading a letter from home.
- 2:11:15Straightens up.
- 2:11:16Blows again.
- 2:11:18And this time it's Mancuso who backs away.
- 2:11:21Says well, have the blows on me this time.
- 2:11:25One step in.
- 2:11:27Double swinging stretch.
- 2:11:28Gomez delivers.
- 2:11:29Mancuso hits it high out into short center field.
- 2:11:32DiMaggio comes running under it and takes it.
- 2:11:35And it's nothing across for the Giants in the top of the seventh.
- 2:11:40More observations from Warren.
- 2:12:03That was enough to get almost any ball club down for the time being.
- 2:12:07Naturally with Gomez being as effective as he has been throughout his American League season.
- 2:12:12And throughout this ball game with the exception of the fifth inning.
- 2:12:16It was hardly likely that the Giants were going to cut loose and have any big inning off of him.
- 2:12:22Any more than it was that the Yankees were going to have one off of Carl Hubbell.
- 2:12:27But that to me is one of the reasons why there are probably more than 60,000 people here looking at this baseball game.
- 2:12:34And nobody ever knows what is going to happen in a ball game.
- 2:12:37At the very minute that Hubbell walked Gomez, who was a pitcher, no one suspected that he was due for the trouble that happened.
- 2:12:44And so Red, looks like they're ready to start again, maybe on Kaufman this time.
- 2:12:49Dick Kaufman, ready to pitch to Lou Gehrig.
- 2:12:51And that's all Carl, strike one, buzzing it down just above the knees on the outside.
- 2:12:55Gehrig has all but two official trips.
- 2:12:58The only time he got all was in the sixth with a deliberate walk.
- 2:13:01Later came around to be scored.
- 2:13:03Very deep, round toward right.
- 2:13:05Columbia Lou, tremendous favorite here, sets.
- 2:13:07Expect one inside up against him, tight for ball one.
- 2:13:10One and one.
- 2:13:15Dick Kaufman, third, the Giants pitches.
- 2:13:18In the ball game and in the sixth inning.
- 2:13:21Now working, starting the last of the seven.
- 2:13:24Gehrig swinging, it's a sky-high foul up on top of the stands and back of third base.
- 2:13:30Gets up at the edge of the upper fashard and drops all the way back.
- 2:13:34Like a bong.
- 2:13:36Now that's one bong, but people weren't dodging.
- 2:13:39They were fighting to get close to it.
- 2:13:44Kaufman comes down with a change of pace, just missing outside.
- 2:13:48Count levels at two and two.
- 2:13:51Gehrig certainly had to lay the engineering eye on that one.
- 2:13:55Dick delivers, missing inside, it's three-two.
- 2:14:03Gehrig turns a little bit.
- 2:14:06Forward right field.
- 2:14:13Diggs in solidly, standing on those piano legs of his.
- 2:14:17Takes outside for ball four.
- 2:14:20And Gehrig is walked first up in the last of the seven.
- 2:14:24That's walk number three, given up by Kaufman.
- 2:14:27Walk number six, given to the Yankees.
- 2:14:34Nobody out, last of the seven.
- 2:14:36Gehrig now leading down off first.
- 2:14:38Bill Dickey, who has one hit out of three tries.
- 2:14:42Stands waiting.
- 2:14:44Getting left-handed.
- 2:14:46Very, very tall and slender for a catcher.
- 2:14:49Outfield toward right.
- 2:14:51Dickey pulls.
- 2:14:54Infield pull-up around second.
- 2:14:56Bill takes a curve outside, ball one.
- 2:14:59Kaufman missing.
- 2:15:05Seven-two-one.
- 2:15:07Favor of the Yankees.
- 2:15:09Nobody out, last of the seven.
- 2:15:11The man on first.
- 2:15:12Low for ball two.
- 2:15:14Kaufman's having trouble with his control.
- 2:15:17There's no new experience for Kaufman to be pitching against the Yankees.
- 2:15:21Most of his major league career has been in the American League.
- 2:15:24Washington, the Browns.
- 2:15:27Being released by the St. Louis Browns.
- 2:15:29Came over to the National League with the Giants.
- 2:15:32Pitches inside.
- 2:15:34There's a throw down to first, not in time by Mancuso.
- 2:15:37And it's three-nothing.
- 2:15:39Three-nothing to Bill Dickey.
- 2:15:41Gehrig on first with a pass.
- 2:15:44Dickey set.
- 2:15:49Kaufman misses inside with his three-nothing pitch for ball four.
- 2:15:53And Dickey trots off to first base.
- 2:15:55And Gehrig moves down to second.
- 2:16:01Of the six Yankees that Kaufman has pitched to, he's walked four up.
- 2:16:08Dickey gambles back onto the mound.
- 2:16:14Bill Terry standing out in front of the giant dugout.
- 2:16:17Looks down into the dirt for the moment.
- 2:16:20Imagine Bill doesn't feel like joining a choir and singing one of his now famous solos.
- 2:16:26Later up is Merrill Hogue who drops a butt down toward third and it rolls foul.
- 2:16:31Strike one. Nobody out. Last to the seventh.
- 2:16:38Seven to one in favor of the Yankees.
- 2:16:41Gehrig on second, Dickey on first.
- 2:16:43Result of passes by second relief pitcher Dick Kaufman.
- 2:16:49Much attention.
- 2:16:50Focused on the relief pitchers in the last of the sixth inning.
- 2:16:55And there was a slip up from the general's ship somewhere.
- 2:17:01Gumbart was announced and he was sitting in on the dugout.
- 2:17:04Hadn't thrown a ball, hadn't even been in the bullpen.
- 2:17:07He had to hurriedly go out and pitch to one Yankee even though Kaufman was announced following him.
- 2:17:12Kaufman couldn't come in until Gumbart pitched to one man.
- 2:17:14Now Hogue, the right-hand hitter, takes high outside.
- 2:17:16A throw down to second.
- 2:17:18Isn't in time and brought down.
- 2:17:20On the third base side of second base, Dickey.
- 2:17:23On the third base side of second base, leaning for the ball, has Husky Lou Gehrig come right into him.
- 2:17:29Much as an end tries to take out an opposing tackle.
- 2:17:33Gehrig's fighting to get back to the bag and little Bartell in his way.
- 2:17:37Well, you can guess the result.
- 2:17:39Gehrig got back to the bag.
- 2:17:43One and one.
- 2:17:46Hogue down in his crouch. He has 0 for 3.
- 2:17:49Doesn't joke the bat. Trash the butt and this one is pups bowled back of third.
- 2:17:54So far the Yankees this afternoon have been unable to lay down butts when ordered.
- 2:18:00And then have been hitting with two strikes on the base hits.
- 2:18:04It seems to be a pretty good baseball strategy.
- 2:18:07It's working today anyhow.
- 2:18:10Working at a thousand.
- 2:18:14Now can Hogue continue the Yankee policy?
- 2:18:20One and two.
- 2:18:22Body away. The runners lead off first and second.
- 2:18:27Hoffman, well, is going to go back to second.
- 2:18:29Well, he doesn't.
- 2:18:30Gehrig taking a long lead.
- 2:18:35There's a bird ball hit for third.
- 2:18:36Ox scoops it up, throws the second one away.
- 2:18:38The relay on the first. It's a double play.
- 2:18:40Hogue starts moving down to third base.
- 2:18:44And Hogue was unable to continue that Yankee policy so far on the sixth inning.
- 2:18:50Trying to butt falling off two pitches and hitting safely.
- 2:18:54He fouls out his two butt pitches, then hit it to a double play.
- 2:18:57Up to Whitehead, to McCarty.
- 2:19:00Gehrig on the double play, moving down to third.
- 2:19:02Two outs. Left to seven.
- 2:19:06Up now is Selkirk.
- 2:19:08Sharp and toward right.
- 2:19:10Swing, fouled.
- 2:19:12Bent around.
- 2:19:14Black one.
- 2:19:16George has one for three.
- 2:19:18The singles came in the sixth.
- 2:19:20But one of the Yankees hits the game.
- 2:19:24There was a sharpened, wrapped through the hole between first and second out in the right field.
- 2:19:29Outside, all one. One and one.
- 2:19:33Two out.
- 2:19:34Gehrig on third, 90 feet away.
- 2:19:36The Yankees lead seven to one.
- 2:19:38Outfield pulled around toward right.
- 2:19:41Selkirk takes a change of pace. Low.
- 2:19:44Two and one.
- 2:19:47Longsby, working balls and strikes.
- 2:19:49R behind first.
- 2:19:51Basil behind second.
- 2:19:52Stewart behind third.
- 2:19:55Kauffman comes in.
- 2:19:56It's an outside pitch which is rolled out to short.
- 2:19:58Wachtell picks it up.
- 2:19:59Goes over to first.
- 2:20:00In time.
- 2:20:02McCarty leaning in.
- 2:20:03Makes the stretch and the pick up.
- 2:20:06That's all for the Yankees.
- 2:20:08And at the end of seven innings, it is seven to one.
- 2:20:11Warren.
- 2:20:12Well, Red, that was interesting to watch how Kauffman
- 2:20:16righted himself after that bad start out there.
- 2:20:19Since he got into this ball game, as you pointed out, he certainly was very wild.
- 2:20:23And after he walked the first two men in the innings,
- 2:20:26that seemed to me to be the opportunity for the Yankees to start a lot more trouble there.
- 2:20:31But the play that Ott made to turn that drive-by Hoag into a double play
- 2:20:36helped Kauffman out considerably.
- 2:20:39And I suppose that the Yankees are content with what they have now,
- 2:20:42and I don't know as I blame them.
- 2:20:44Seven runs at this part of the ball game, going into the first half of the eighth inning,
- 2:20:50seem to be a lot of runs, considering the way that Gomez has been going since he started this ball game.
- 2:20:56And the Yankees are the first giant hitter coming up, Red, so back to you.
- 2:21:01The Burgess Whitehead will start it off as you go into the beginning of the eighth,
- 2:21:05at the end of seven full innings for the Yankees, seven runs, seven hits, and no errors.
- 2:21:09While for the Giants, one run, five hits, and one error.
- 2:21:13Burgess Whitehead.
- 2:21:16So far the only extra base hit.
- 2:21:19Takes strike one, ball, right down in there.
- 2:21:22First pitch of the eighth inning, he doubles.
- 2:21:25He's one for two.
- 2:21:27Swinging to fly ball out into center field, imagine you're waiting lazily under it and have it.
- 2:21:32It's all four Burgess, one up, one away in the eighth.
- 2:21:36And Wally Berger is coming out to bat for Kauffman.
- 2:21:42Big Wally Berger, former big fan of the Boston Club of the National League.
- 2:21:48Well, there's not going to be any slip-up on who's going to pinch hit.
- 2:21:53It's going to be by Osby and the public address announced to me.
- 2:21:58And they tell each other exactly what's coming up.
- 2:22:02Number three, side, four, con.
- 2:22:07The first pitch to Berger is high outside, ball one.
- 2:22:11Wally is the big strapping six-footer, hitting right-handed.
- 2:22:14Gomez delivers.
- 2:22:15Berger swings.
- 2:22:16It's a high fly ball, long out in the center.
- 2:22:18Imagine you're waiting, waiting, takes it.
- 2:22:21It's off to Berger, two up, two away, top of the eighth.
- 2:22:28Jojo Moore, the thin man of the Giants, or the gauze ghost, he's sometimes called.
- 2:22:36Last step's up to hit for his fourth time.
- 2:22:39It means the Giants are starting their fourth batting around.
- 2:22:42Joe's single through the middle in the sixth.
- 2:22:44He has one for three, hitting left-handed, then deep in the box.
- 2:22:47Takes strike one, ball, sharp curve down above the knee.
- 2:22:51Moore is feared as one of the most dangerous first-ball hitters in baseball,
- 2:22:55and he has his own one-on-one first pitch this afternoon.
- 2:22:57Takes low inside, ball one, one-on-one.
- 2:23:06Joe pumping that stick.
- 2:23:12It's low outside, Moore's ahead, Gomez behind.
- 2:23:23Gomez comes in there, low for ball three, three and one.
- 2:23:36Pitch, ball, right, two, three-two, outfield toward right.
- 2:23:50Moore swinging, it's a high foul, back of third, rock goes over, but he cannot get it.
- 2:23:55Back into the box.
- 2:23:57Still three-two, two out, nobody on.
- 2:24:00Child have the eighth inning, which is the first of the eight.
- 2:24:06The series is being opened, Yankee Stadium, the American League ball park this year.
- 2:24:09The Yankees are home club.
- 2:24:13Seven to one.
- 2:24:18The argument of power supremacy.
- 2:24:22Seven to one, play for the Yankees.
- 2:24:24Moore swings on another three-two pitch.
- 2:24:26He's got a fly ball into short left field and it drops safely in there for a base hit.
- 2:24:30Moore turns to the left first and then holds on, dropping a fly ball single in short left field,
- 2:24:36about 15 feet inside the foul line.
- 2:24:39It's the second straight hit for Moore.
- 2:24:41It's the first giant to have more than one blow.
- 2:24:44It's hit number six off Gomez, and it's the first hit off Gomez since right hit double with two out in the fifth.
- 2:24:53Two out, Moore leading off first, and the batter is Dick Bartell.
- 2:24:56There's one for three.
- 2:24:57Swings on the first pitch, it's a long line, drive deep in, two left, and it's caught.
- 2:25:00Right back up against the stands by a left fielder, home.
- 2:25:05It's all for the top of the eighth.
- 2:25:07The Yankees are still a plus six run, one.
- 2:25:14To me, the effective pitcher that he has been right down in the line,
- 2:25:17that base hit that Joe Moore dropped over there in the left field,
- 2:25:21wasn't such a severe one that it would have startled anybody.
- 2:25:25And in all events, it came when there were two out,
- 2:25:28which is a good time normally for base hits to come, especially when there are no one on base.
- 2:25:33Since his little mishap in the fifth inning,
- 2:25:37Gomez has gone right straight through this ball game and he's pitched,
- 2:25:41I wouldn't say remarkable baseball, but he's pitched the kind of baseball that people have been expecting
- 2:25:47because of the fact that Wally Berger was used as a pitch hitter in the game.
- 2:25:52We will have a chance this afternoon to look at four of the giant pitchers.
- 2:25:58And, Red, because we can never be sure who the giant pitchers are
- 2:26:02after that practice that was established through the sixth inning,
- 2:26:06I suppose you'd take a look at him out there and decide whether or not he's Smith.
- 2:26:09He looks like Smith to me. Do you think he is Smith?
- 2:26:12Well, if he's not Smith, Warren, he's certainly wearing our uniform.
- 2:26:16It looks just like him.
- 2:26:18Al Smith, turned out of a little left-handed third ball arter.
- 2:26:23And the fourth giant pitcher, going against the Yankees,
- 2:26:27here in the first game of the 1937 World Series.
- 2:26:31Smith has just taken his place there on the mound.
- 2:26:33This is going down to just Mancuso.
- 2:26:36In the season of 36, Smith was just about the tops for the giant relievers.
- 2:26:42At one time, Bill Terry said that he was just about the best elite pitcher that he ever saw,
- 2:26:47especially coming in there with a curve ball.
- 2:26:49However, this year, Al has not been tremendously effective.
- 2:26:52And the relief burden among the giants has had to be shifted around from man to man.
- 2:26:58However, it's a well-known fact that when the giant wants a real relief pitching,
- 2:27:01Popple has usually been the fellow to go out there and make one run stand up.
- 2:27:05The first Yankee up in the last of the eighth inning is Tony Lazari.
- 2:27:12Lots of people are now beginning to leave.
- 2:27:16They're going to the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:27:18Lazari hitting right-handed, swings on an inside pitch, missing four, strike one.
- 2:27:22A steady stream of people trying to beat the mob,
- 2:27:27which will be pouring out of Yankee Stadium, six more outs.
- 2:27:30Now leaving already.
- 2:27:32Lazari takes low inside, one and one.
- 2:27:36Al Smith coming on for the last of the eighth.
- 2:27:40And it's the New York Yankees, several runs for the New York Giants, one, seven to one.
- 2:27:46Smith comes down, high, two, two and one.
- 2:27:51Al's very stocky, throws sort of side off, doesn't wind up.
- 2:27:58Outfield is toward left on Lazari.
- 2:28:02Tony takes up against him for ball three.
- 2:28:06Three-one.
- 2:28:08Smith taking the return from Mancuso, back slowly back to the mound.
- 2:28:17Al comes down.
- 2:28:18It's in there, swung on and hit deep and far back into left.
- 2:28:21And it's a home run for Lazari.
- 2:28:45A fat pitch, as the boys say, that three-one came down in there and did Lazari go after it and get fat on it.
- 2:28:52The first home run of the 1937 World Series.
- 2:28:56It's high, far into the lower spectators, deep behind left field.
- 2:29:03And well up among them, no question about that.
- 2:29:06And now it's eight to one.
- 2:29:08Gomez is up.
- 2:29:09Swings and misses, strike one.
- 2:29:11About the one thing left to make Gomez's couple joy overflow is to get a base hit.
- 2:29:18He, like any other pitcher, dearly loves him.
- 2:29:21Gets back from one up against him, one and one.
- 2:29:24Lazari, really pickled one for keeps just a moment ago.
- 2:29:33Smith comes down with a curve in there, ball strike two.
- 2:29:36That one drove Gomez, left hand hit a backer step and then broke away from him and down over Cleveland.
- 2:29:41One ball, two strikes, nobody out.
- 2:29:46Gomez falls away from the pitch, pulls it deep into right field and ripples.
- 2:29:50This judge against Ben goes back to make a spectacular catch.
- 2:30:02Gomez set to hit that pitch.
- 2:30:05Fell into it and got his whole weight behind it and drove it deep out into right.
- 2:30:09Ripple came in, misjudged it at first.
- 2:30:11Then saw the ball was going to carry a ball over his head, started running back.
- 2:30:15One foot slipped underneath him, but still he managed to get strength from somewhere and lead time to the end to make a spectacular one handed catch and save himself.
- 2:30:22Frank Crissetti hits the first pitch of line drive right through Bellano.
- 2:30:25And that's two away in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:30:28Warren's going to tell you more about Ripple's catch.
- 2:30:31I can see him sort of licking his chops in preparation for that.
- 2:30:36Line drive, hit backer's headed to Mel after the second out.
- 2:30:39Now it's two away, last of the eighth inning, nobody on and Red Rock up.
- 2:30:43He has one, four, three official tries.
- 2:30:45Hitting left handed he tries to bunt and foul tips it.
- 2:30:48Frank one.
- 2:30:50Left hand batter, left hand pitcher, Al Smith.
- 2:30:52The fourth giant hurler in this ball game since the sixth inning.
- 2:31:00Eight to one, favor of the Yankees.
- 2:31:03That feels straight away.
- 2:31:06Roth doesn't go after it, but it's good.
- 2:31:08Hall strike two.
- 2:31:10Smith burnt that one through his fastball.
- 2:31:15Ripple put a deep out and right.
- 2:31:18Roth down on his crouch, leads back from one inside.
- 2:31:21One, one and two.
- 2:31:26Roth up there hitting, DiMaggio leaning down on his right knee on deck.
- 2:31:31Rob cocks that stick back in his left ear, swings.
- 2:31:33It's a high fly ball out of the left field, Joe Moore.
- 2:31:35Goes back one step, now comes in one and has it.
- 2:31:38That's all for the last of the eighth.
- 2:31:43Warren?
- 2:31:44Red, I noticed that you suggested that I was going to talk something about that catch that Ripple made in this inning.
- 2:31:52First, I want to say that this inning stirred memories in me rather than excited me about what happened here.
- 2:31:59When Tony Lozare got his home run this afternoon, the first one of the 1937 World Series,
- 2:32:05I was thinking about one that he made last year, which came with three men on bases.
- 2:32:09That was truly a sensational one since that doesn't happen very often in World Series fifths.
- 2:32:15When Ripple started after that ball out there, believe it or not, Red,
- 2:32:19I was thinking of a catch he made in Chicago not long ago with three men on bases at a time when some of us thought that the pen and play between the Giants and the Cubs.
- 2:32:28And if he hadn't made that catch for those three men on bases, well, maybe there would have been a little different in here.
- 2:32:34I think that's the way everybody accepted it so that when Ripple went up in the air and caught Gomez long drive,
- 2:32:40much as I hated to see Gomez lose in his life's ambition to make a base hit, I couldn't help think of that catch in Chicago.
- 2:32:47So now back to you, Red.
- 2:32:49Melott takes the first pitch of the ninth inning.
- 2:32:51Paul strike one. Gomez looking just as strong and fresh as when he started.
- 2:32:58Comes right back in. Hot swings and misses.
- 2:33:01Last one burnt down around the knees. Strike two.
- 2:33:03Gomez gives his foul to the little yank. Straightens that.
- 2:33:09Knees and elbows to Kim Boy comes out of it.
- 2:33:11Strike three swinging and on three pitches.
- 2:33:13Master Melvin is struck out to start the ninth inning.
- 2:33:17That's the second strikeout for Gomez.
- 2:33:21He got his first strikeout at the expense of Hank Leaver.
- 2:33:24With a third out in the first inning.
- 2:33:27And here is Hank up again.
- 2:33:30Hank has 0 for 3.
- 2:33:32The Yankees had 8 to 1. One out, nobody on top of the ninth.
- 2:33:35John's batting. Leaver takes. Go outside. Ball one.
- 2:33:39Gomez still shining brightly underneath that record of his of having never been beaten in World Series competition.
- 2:33:46Inside and it's ball two.
- 2:33:49Two-nothing.
- 2:33:51Now the field is very deep on Hank.
- 2:33:54He gets a hold of it. He'll give it a ride.
- 2:33:57Pitch right in.
- 2:33:59That one is taken. Two and one.
- 2:34:02A steady stream of people going out of every possible exit here at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:34:07They figured some time ago the outcome of the game was decided.
- 2:34:11Leaver swings. That's a fly ball out of the center.
- 2:34:14DiMaggio coming in, makes the catch on his chest.
- 2:34:22Two away. Top of the ninth.
- 2:34:24Up steps Jimmy Repple.
- 2:34:27Who found Major League Baseball was much more lucrative and pleasant than being an ambidextrous paper hanger.
- 2:34:37Outfield toward right.
- 2:34:39Repple hitting left-handed, takes inside against him. Ball one.
- 2:34:42Jimmy looking very calm and cool.
- 2:34:45To say that he is a left-handed hitter is only half the truth.
- 2:34:49The pitch. All strike one.
- 2:34:53When Repple came to the Giants, he hit from either side of the plate.
- 2:34:56Terry insisted that he hit as a left-handed swinger.
- 2:35:02Low outside. One and two.
- 2:35:10Counts lightly. Jimmy's favor.
- 2:35:13Two out. Top of the ninth.
- 2:35:15Nobody on.
- 2:35:17The Yankees seven runs for the good. Leading eight to one.
- 2:35:22Two balls and one strike.
- 2:35:24Gomez delivers. Low outside and it's three and one.
- 2:35:29Repple looking very coolly.
- 2:35:32There's one for three this afternoon. Single first up in the fifth inning.
- 2:35:37Ball four.
- 2:35:39Walsh going down to first base.
- 2:35:41And that's the first base on balls given up by Lefty Gomez this afternoon.
- 2:35:48Seven of the Yankees received gratuitous.
- 2:35:52Repple on first. Two out.
- 2:35:54Batter is young Jack McCarthy.
- 2:35:57John, if you don't know him very closely.
- 2:35:59Swings and misses. Strike one.
- 2:36:02That one right down in there.
- 2:36:04McCarthy slender. Young first baseman.
- 2:36:08He's finishing his first year in the majors by participation in the World Series.
- 2:36:12Swings. Foul tips. That one back for strike two.
- 2:36:15Gomez has promptly gone ahead of him with his first two pitches.
- 2:36:18Nothing in two to McCarthy.
- 2:36:23Vicki down in his crouch.
- 2:36:28First baseman Gehrig back in his fielding post.
- 2:36:30Repple's allowed to lead his ball up first. He wants to.
- 2:36:32High outside. Ball one.
- 2:36:35One and two to McCarthy.
- 2:36:37Gomez at the moment seems to be just slightly tired.
- 2:36:40He gives you the impression that he is trying to put a little bit more on the ball than he has any other time.
- 2:36:46The pitch is high. Two and two.
- 2:36:55Two to. Two out.
- 2:36:58Half of the nine.
- 2:37:00McCarthy waiting.
- 2:37:02Vicki calls for the pitch.
- 2:37:05McCarthy swinging. Foul tips it right back onto the screen.
- 2:37:09Count still hangs at two and two.
- 2:37:13Field forward toward right.
- 2:37:16Things are quiet right now.
- 2:37:18About the only hubbub from the spectators are those who are moving trying to get out of the park.
- 2:37:23Pitch misses outside by a half of all three.
- 2:37:26And it's three and two to Jack McCarthy.
- 2:37:29And now the run and hit is on for Ripple at first base.
- 2:37:34He'll be breaking on Gomez's arm. He does.
- 2:37:36Pitch is in. Rolls slowly down toward first.
- 2:37:38Gehrig comes in to field and picks it up and tags McCarthy out on his.
- 2:37:42Jack comes running into first base.
- 2:37:44Gehrig with a big grin on his face.
- 2:37:46Stops that baseball in his hip pocket.
- 2:37:48Grabs Gomez by the hand.
- 2:37:50The two of them shake hands and are the first players off the field as they dash into the Yankee dugout and disappear from sight.
- 2:37:57And the Yankees win.
- 2:37:59Would you say convincingly?
- 2:38:01Well I don't know of a better word.
- 2:38:03And to speak a convincing truth.
- 2:38:06It's been a great deal of pleasure for this old redhead to be up here talking to you the last four innings.
- 2:38:11And now this is Red Barber handing you over to the very capable hands of Warren Brown who is going to put you just right on how everything happened this afternoon and plenty of it did.
- 2:38:21Warren.
- 2:38:22Well thank you Red.
- 2:38:23And summing up this ball game the first of the 1937 World Series.
- 2:38:28It was after all strictly a matter of pitchers.
- 2:38:31It started out that way between lefty Gomez the best pitcher I suppose.
- 2:38:37In the American League and Carl Hubble who was certainly the superior left hander in the National League.
- 2:38:44Right up until the sixth inning it was a ball game between these two.
- 2:38:48And if anything Hubble seemed to be the more effective of the two.
- 2:38:53In the fifth inning the New York Giants had crowded Gomez sufficiently to score one run which looked like a lot of runs.
- 2:39:02And in that inning manager Joe McCarty of the Yankees who has steered them to a couple of pennants in a row and won World's Championship had to make up his mind whether he wanted to pull his infield back and play for a double play and stake the Yankees to the Giants I should say to one run and take his chance on what would follow.
- 2:39:21That's what he did.
- 2:39:22Pull his infield back and Gus Mancuso hit into a double play.
- 2:39:27And out of that the Yankees were able to escape with only having the one run scored against them which came in on the double play.
- 2:39:34And that was the one big inning or the start of one big inning that the Giants were able to have off Gomez all afternoon.
- 2:39:40On the other side of the field Hubble after walking one man and allowing a hit in the first inning was unhittable right on through to the sixth inning.
- 2:39:51And then he did a thing which baseball folk always think since there is a lot of superstition in baseball they always think that if you walk the first man and especially if you walk the pitcher there is going to be trouble.
- 2:40:03I don't think that any of the more than 60,000 people in this Yankee Stadium this afternoon suspected that when lefty Gomez got his base on balls to open the sixth inning that there was going to be quite as much trouble as there was until the last man was retired.
- 2:40:18Before the last man was retired in that inning the Yankees had driven Hubble out of the box and because of a mistake in announcement Harry Gumbart was in there in time to pitch to one man who got a base hit off him and Dick Kaufman finally got the inning over.
- 2:40:34Before he did there were seven runs scored and six hits and that was the ball game.
- 2:40:39Later on in the game in the eighth inning with the fourth giant pitcher in action Al Smith, Tony Lazzari batted out the only home run and incidentally the only Yankee extra base hit of the ball game.
- 2:40:53That made the score eight for the Yankees at which they rested on their laurels in this first game.
- 2:40:59And looking over my score book here I find that the Yankees have eight runs and eight hits which seems to me to be a very effective way of doing business. Going into the game tomorrow which will also be played at the Yankee Stadium the second game of the series I don't imagine either manager will change from his plans.
- 2:41:17Before the game today Bill Terry told me that he intended to come in with Cliff Melton and I imagine he will come in with him. Melton being the young left hander who has won his 20 games in his first full year up here in the major leagues.
- 2:41:32Joe McCarty of the Yankees said that he intended to pitch red roughing tomorrow and Joe was inclined to go a little further.
- 2:41:38When he talked to me Joe was an old friend of mine and he spoke his mind out to me down there and the Yankee dug out before the game. He said that he didn't think that he would go away from a platform that he established rather effectively last year.
- 2:41:52He said that it would be Gomez today roughing tomorrow and after that Monty Pearson and Bump Hadley and unless the Giants pull themselves together and tear after Melton I imagine that's the way the Yankees will go through with the same four pitchers that they used in the World Series last year.
- 2:42:10The game today was certainly an interesting one. There was a lot of spectacular feeling on both sides and while there wasn't the tremendous burst of hitting that we've been led to expect from these two clubs and particularly from the Yankees who have capitalized on their power to win an American League pennant off by themselves, nevertheless they did mass together and put across one big inning.
- 2:42:34Alright George Hicks, I'll say goodbye now and it's yours.
- 2:42:39Well all I can say is that the game is over and that historical first marker is down. The tips are down and the Yanks are up. And the crowd is now pouring out. By the time the game was well underway by the second inning practically every seat in the Yankee Stadium was filled.
- 2:42:55There must have been close to the 60,000 mark and over. The new additions you know seat 71,000 at Yankee Stadium now. And so we've had the first game right now as we look down from our tier, the third tier right at the edge over home plate.
- 2:43:12The diamond itself and the green outfield is simply dotted and spotted all over and the exits crowded with these thousands of spectators who are taking home their memories of the first game of the 1937 World Series.
- 2:43:27As I looked at it, very much of a spectator this afternoon, the walk of Gomez in the sixth and that slashing single to center by DiMaggio with the bases loaded for the first runs, well I think that broke Hubbell's heart and the giant spirit for the game today.
- 2:43:46And by the way the only homer today was Lazari, the first man up in the eighth. He pulled a terrifically long and high homer into the left field grandstand. It must have gone at least 400 feet and nobody on but that was the homer of the day.
- 2:44:01And so I guess that's about all we can say. This has been brought to you by the NBC and its associated stations from coast to coast. We'll be back on the air tomorrow of course with the second game from the same position at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:44:17As you know the first two games are played at the stadium and then the third, fourth and if there is a fifth at Polo Grounds and the sixth and seventh at the Yankee Stadium if necessary. We'll be back on the air tomorrow at our regular time, 1.15 Eastern Standard Time.
- 2:44:3112.15 Central, 11.15 Mountain, 10.15 Pacific Standard Time. Your announcers will be Tom Manning of Cleveland, Red Barber of Cincinnati and Warren Brown, sports editor of the Chicago Herald Examiner. And so, well that's all.
