Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Live from the w R Life back studios.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Well, Rob Shooter, the great writer, columnist, nobody better gossip
- 0:10Speaker 2: and entertainment. You see him all over television. Make sure
- 0:13Speaker 2: you follow his substack. It's very good Rob Shooter on substack.
- 0:19Speaker 2: And hey, by the way, he's got a new novel
- 0:21Speaker 2: coming out called It Started with a Whisper. It's actually
- 0:23Speaker 2: already out equal parts scandal, glamour, obsession. And he's with
- 0:27Speaker 2: us right now, Rob Shooter, how you doing.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Hey, Mark, my old friend, how are you good to
- 0:32Speaker 1: do with you?
- 0:33Speaker 2: I'm good, I'm good. What does this mean? This title?
- 0:36Speaker 2: It started with a whisper.
- 0:38Speaker 1: It's a good title, isn't it. Everything starts with a whisper.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I'm in the gossip business, and gossip starts with that's
- 0:45Speaker 1: having always starts. And so his novel is a love
- 0:49Speaker 1: letter to the gossip business, the celebrity world that I
- 0:52Speaker 1: love so much. Gossip columnists who get a morning show
- 0:56Speaker 1: to talk about celebrities kind of write the view. However,
- 0:59Speaker 1: they quickly become very aware that the real gossip is
- 1:02Speaker 1: not about the stars, but rather about themselves. Each of
- 1:05Speaker 1: them has a secret, and that secret Mark starts with
- 1:08Speaker 1: a whisper.
- 1:09Speaker 2: All right, Well to get the book, will you just
- 1:10Speaker 2: go to Amazon and get it?
- 1:11Speaker 1: It started, yeah, Amazon, or a best seller around Amazon,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and so a good beach read. If you fancy a
- 1:16Speaker 1: gossipy celebrity type book, this beach Season by it. I
- 1:21Speaker 1: think you'll like it.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It started with a whisper, Rob Shooter, get the book.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:26Speaker 2: The Taylor's Swift wedding we're hearing now it cost between
- 1:30Speaker 2: fifteen and twenty million to put it on.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, just a massive one of the biggest
- 1:37Speaker 1: celebrity weddings that I've covered. I've done this for a
- 1:40Speaker 1: long time. I thought Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in
- 1:43Speaker 1: Italy would hold the record for a long forever, but
- 1:47Speaker 1: clearly not Taylor and Travis at least twenty twenty five million.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And then add on top of that, they gave twenty
- 1:54Speaker 1: six million away to charity, so about a fifty million
- 1:58Speaker 1: dollar wedding. I spoke to about three four people who
- 2:01Speaker 1: were there who were invited, and they all had to
- 2:04Speaker 1: sign NDA. So they whispered to me very carefully what
- 2:07Speaker 1: they saw inside, and I said, she turned it into
- 2:11Speaker 1: a literal garden. I get it to Madison Square Garden
- 2:14Speaker 1: but anyone who's ever been there to see the Nicks
- 2:16Speaker 1: or Billy Joel, No, there's not a lot of flowers there.
- 2:19Speaker 1: It's a pretty industrial space. And so she had it
- 2:22Speaker 1: full of flowers and trees and they made it look
- 2:26Speaker 1: this beautiful, magical place. And you know, I think I
- 2:29Speaker 1: get people were saying it sounds tacky, and it does. However,
- 2:33Speaker 1: people that were inside tell me Mark it was magical.
- 2:36Speaker 1: It was absolutely magical.
- 2:38Speaker 2: But it sounds incredibly stupid. If you wanted a garden
- 2:40Speaker 2: with trees, why wouldn't you just go hold the wedding
- 2:43Speaker 2: in a garden with trees.
- 2:47Speaker 1: At the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. It was beautiful. A couple
- 2:54Speaker 1: of things here. It's not a lot of people say
- 2:56Speaker 1: it's about privacy. The garden has no window, so if
- 2:59Speaker 1: you get married in a place with no windows, annoying
- 3:01Speaker 1: people like me and photographers can't peek in and see
- 3:04Speaker 1: what you're up sid. Another reason they did thist is
- 3:07Speaker 1: that I don't think the myth of Taylor Swift and
- 3:09Speaker 1: privacy is really accurate. This is somebody who has written
- 3:13Speaker 1: many songs about love and breakups and relationships, so Taylor
- 3:17Speaker 1: is not that private. She put she's private on her
- 3:20Speaker 1: own terms. She tells you what she wants you to
- 3:23Speaker 1: know when she wants you to know it. There were
- 3:26Speaker 1: cameras Mark inside this wedding. I know a three to
- 3:28Speaker 1: four camera people inside the wedding who filmed it. So
- 3:33Speaker 1: that's why she wants it to be kept private. Because
- 3:35Speaker 1: at some point this could be a streaming, this could
- 3:39Speaker 1: be in the movie theaters, this could be in a
- 3:41Speaker 1: music video. And so Taylor, we will get to see it.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Don't worry, my friends. We will get to see the dress.
- 3:46Speaker 1: We'll get to see inside, but we'll get to see
- 3:49Speaker 1: it when Taylor sells it to us.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously, if you wanted privacy, you do what JFK Junior?
- 3:56Speaker 2: Did you go hold it on an island with grass
- 3:59Speaker 2: and trains and nobody on the island. But hey, so
- 4:04Speaker 2: somebody just asked a good question. All these celebrities, Why
- 4:07Speaker 2: wasn't Kamala Harrison invited?
- 4:09Speaker 1: Good question? Taylor's Taylor's a tricky fox. The biggest question
- 4:14Speaker 1: of the wedding. I spoke to several guests. The biggest
- 4:17Speaker 1: question mark was not like, oh, what amazing dress or
- 4:21Speaker 1: what song is she going to sink? The biggest question
- 4:23Speaker 1: that guests were asking one another is how do you
- 4:26Speaker 1: know the bride? And most of them didn't. It was
- 4:29Speaker 1: like when then when Harry and Megan got married and
- 4:32Speaker 1: they invited Oprah and they invited the cloon Is, and
- 4:35Speaker 1: then the Cloones were like, we don't really know her,
- 4:37Speaker 1: was not really met her. So there was a Tanner,
- 4:39Speaker 1: celebrities there who didn't really know Taylor. George seven Knopolis
- 4:43Speaker 1: was there. How did we know Taylor Swift? Sayson to
- 4:46Speaker 1: edatas Ted Lasso, how did he know her? So there
- 4:49Speaker 1: was to other people there. So I think we're there
- 4:52Speaker 1: to make the crowd more exciting, the crowd more pretty,
- 4:54Speaker 1: the crowd more famous. It was a celebrity wedding. This
- 4:58Speaker 1: is not how I thought Taylor would get marriage. I
- 5:00Speaker 1: thought it'd be low key. I thought it'd be just family,
- 5:03Speaker 1: just people that mean something to you. This was more
- 5:06Speaker 1: of a production than a wedding. And now we know
- 5:08Speaker 1: why because at some point we're going to see all
- 5:11Speaker 1: those famous faces sitting in the crowd when we're watching
- 5:14Speaker 1: it on Netflix.
- 5:16Speaker 2: And hey, what's wrong with that Stephen Colbert? I see
- 5:19Speaker 2: the pictures of him coming out of the when he
- 5:20Speaker 2: looks so miserable. It looks like it's a joyous occasion.
- 5:24Speaker 2: What is he so serious about.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Well, he's miserable because his life fell apart, like what
- 5:28Speaker 1: he was doing, the dream job, and now he's not.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I'm working on a big story about him for my
- 5:33Speaker 1: sub stack. He'll be out in a few days. I'm
- 5:35Speaker 1: working on it. I hear. It's just absolutely miserable. But
- 5:40Speaker 1: it finally hit him that he had the greatest job
- 5:42Speaker 1: in the world, and he blew it. And you know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: people will have these jobs. They don't think they're ever
- 5:48Speaker 1: going to end. Little secret. All of our jobs are
- 5:50Speaker 1: going to end at some point. And he was more
- 5:53Speaker 1: invested in that than he let on. He used to
- 5:55Speaker 1: pretend that he was like this cool, chill guy who
- 5:58Speaker 1: had a late night show. He loved it. It was
- 6:00Speaker 1: his whole life. And when it gets taken away from
- 6:03Speaker 1: you for pretty good reasons. He was losing a ton
- 6:06Speaker 1: of money. They just don't see it coming. It's like
- 6:09Speaker 1: the Housewives. The housewives never think they're not going to
- 6:12Speaker 1: be a housewives, but they all get fired eventually, and
- 6:15Speaker 1: so Cob then has to figure out that next chapter.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And it's so easy when you're on TV. Saying you
- 6:20Speaker 1: want to be a politician, or giving your opinions, it's
- 6:23Speaker 1: really difficult when you actually have to do it. So
- 6:26Speaker 1: I don't think he's running for office. I don't think
- 6:28Speaker 1: he's got offered. He thought he'd have everybody offer him
- 6:31Speaker 1: a job on streaming services. None of them have happened, Mark,
- 6:35Speaker 1: And so I think he's like licking, licking his wounds
- 6:37Speaker 1: a little bit, licking his wounds.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Well, that's good. Yeah, those Real Housewives, boy, you see him.
- 6:44Speaker 2: You know, if you take just an ordinary citizen, just
- 6:46Speaker 2: a regular put them on television and give them fame
- 6:49Speaker 2: and attention, and then you take it away from they're pathetic.
- 6:52Speaker 2: They're on their Instagram trying to create some content. It's ridiculous,
- 6:58Speaker 2: it is.
- 6:58Speaker 1: But I sort of I've got a little bit of
- 7:00Speaker 1: that of me, you know it, Mark, Like I said
- 7:02Speaker 1: it Roseanna Scotto, our friend on Good Day New York,
- 7:04Speaker 1: I said, when you stop bugging me booking me on
- 7:07Speaker 1: your shirt, it'll be horrible. I'll be so depressed. I
- 7:09Speaker 1: love doing this. It's a real drug. It's a real high.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And a lot of these ladies on the Housewives, they
- 7:16Speaker 1: wanted this all their lives, and they never got it,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and then suddenly they became pretty famous, and you're right,
- 7:22Speaker 1: they just can't stop Deathnie Frankel, who's made a ton
- 7:25Speaker 1: of money from the show and selling that Margarita mix
- 7:29Speaker 1: that she makes, she can't help herself. She's always on TikTok.
- 7:33Speaker 1: If you gave me that sort of money, I joke
- 7:35Speaker 1: that I'm thirsty, and there's some truth to that. If
- 7:38Speaker 1: you gave me the money definitely made, you'd never see
- 7:41Speaker 1: me again. I'd be on an island. Leave me alone.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I'd turn off my TikTok, I'd turn off my phone.
- 7:46Speaker 1: They can't help themselves. And that's the Colbert problem is
- 7:49Speaker 1: that he loved this. He pretended that he did that.
- 7:52Speaker 1: He was just a regular guy. He loved being famous.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And when the show goes, it does go that fame
- 7:59Speaker 1: does disappear.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, and you make up a good point. When
- 8:02Speaker 2: no other network, nobody in TV is calling you to
- 8:05Speaker 2: hire you, I think that tells.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You not good. Look at whatever job you have. My
- 8:11Speaker 1: friends listening when you when no one's calling her not good,
- 8:16Speaker 1: it's not good. And you don't realize that how lonely
- 8:19Speaker 1: it can be out there. And the other thing too,
- 8:21Speaker 1: I think a lot of these celebrities, particularly the Housewives
- 8:24Speaker 1: and Colbert, they thought other celebrities were their friends. They're not.
- 8:28Speaker 1: They're only your friends when you're flying high. That happens
- 8:31Speaker 1: in real life too, doesn't it. When I'm flying high,
- 8:34Speaker 1: everybody loves me. When I yet fired that many people
- 8:37Speaker 1: will return my goals. And so I think Colbert and
- 8:40Speaker 1: the Housewives are all going through that. And even through
- 8:43Speaker 1: the Taylor Swift wedding, we now realize you look at
- 8:46Speaker 1: these people and you think they're best for Julia Roberts
- 8:49Speaker 1: was there at the Tailor wedding. Reece Willis Boom was
- 8:52Speaker 1: at the Taylor wedding. You know, one of them really
- 8:54Speaker 1: know her. And when she's no longer selling millions of records,
- 8:57Speaker 1: they ain't caring. They're not returning the make real friends
- 9:01Speaker 1: in life, because they'll be there for the good times.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I'm the bad.
- 9:04Speaker 2: So I guess you sprinkle the crowd with celebrities, which
- 9:07Speaker 2: will help you sell the Netflix special. It'll look it
- 9:09Speaker 2: does help.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It does help, It does, and it helps to you know.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And this is like politicians do it too. I love
- 9:14Speaker 1: those big conventions every four years, and you see the
- 9:17Speaker 1: celebrities of the audience. You're like, right, are there? And
- 9:20Speaker 1: I don't think it ever gets anybody any more votes.
- 9:23Speaker 1: In fact, he can be a little bit annoying, but
- 9:24Speaker 1: having celebrities sprinkled in a room always helps you. I mean,
- 9:28Speaker 1: she's gonna have no trouble selling this. It's Taylor Swish
- 9:30Speaker 1: and the biggest star in the world. But it does
- 9:32Speaker 1: make it just a little bit more exciting. I thought
- 9:34Speaker 1: it was really odd too. Is Adam Sandler officiated the
- 9:38Speaker 1: wedding Nam Travis did make a movie with him Happy
- 9:42Speaker 1: Gilmore too, but there were other sets for six weeks,
- 9:46Speaker 1: not six years. And suddenly this guy is associating your
- 9:50Speaker 1: wedding and he's Jewish. You know, like, what was it
- 9:55Speaker 1: a Jewish service? I mean, it's all so hardihood it's
- 9:59Speaker 1: also weird. I thought the whole thing would odd attacking.
- 10:03Speaker 2: He was probably funny officiating, which backs up your theory
- 10:06Speaker 2: they did it for the TV special. It'll be more
- 10:08Speaker 2: entertaining the way he does it.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Friends of mine, friends of mine in the room. He
- 10:12Speaker 1: said to me, it felt like a TV show, and
- 10:13Speaker 1: I felt like they were on a set. It didn't
- 10:15Speaker 1: feel like a wedding. There was love there. I don't
- 10:17Speaker 1: think anyone's doubting that these two are the real deal.
- 10:19Speaker 1: They love each other. All my reporting is that they're
- 10:22Speaker 1: really happy together. But you don't get to be worth
- 10:25Speaker 1: two billion dollars like Taylor fift if you are not savvy,
- 10:29Speaker 1: savvy savvey. She knows what she's doing. She's a great musician,
- 10:33Speaker 1: but she's an even better business woman. She knows how
- 10:35Speaker 1: to make a dollar.
- 10:36Speaker 2: And she'll sell the wedding to Netflix, to somebody for
- 10:39Speaker 2: a fortune, which means the wedding costs nothing. She'll get
- 10:41Speaker 2: all the money back.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And that's what it is. That's how they do it.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It's a lot of money. We started talking about the money,
- 10:47Speaker 1: but she's going to make it all back with this detail.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And I'm sure we're going to get a love album.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I'm sure we're going to get the key chains and
- 10:54Speaker 1: the mugs and the T shirt. It's all a cash
- 10:57Speaker 1: cow and nobody does.
- 10:59Speaker 2: It better than well Rob Shooter. I hate to say
- 11:01Speaker 2: we're out of time, but we hope we can have
- 11:03Speaker 2: you back soon. Now you follow sign up for Rob
