- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to another episode of Learn Malay with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas, I'm ready to learn more market phrases. I've been practicing my chicken and fish from last time. Lucas: That's great. Today, we're going to buy another vegetable at the market. Any guesses? Luna: Hmm... let me think. We've done onions, garlic, chili... how about cucumber? Lucas: Exactly. Cucumber in Malay is timun. T-i-m-u-n. Timun. Luna: Timun. That sounds like 'timun'. Lucas: Right. And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, it's worth mentioning that a small group of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's what keeps these episodes coming ad-free. Luna: Yeah, it's a nice way to support the show if you find it useful. So, timun. I want to buy cucumber at the market. How do I say that? Lucas: You say Saya mahu timun. Saya mahu timun. Let's break it down: Saya means 'I', mahu means 'want', timun is 'cucumber'. Luna: Saya mahu timun. Saya mahu timun. Lucas: Good. Now, when you want to ask the price for one cucumber, you say Berapa harga sebiji? Berapa harga sebiji? Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? So sebiji is for one piece? Lucas: Exactly. Sebiji is a counter for fruits and vegetables. So Berapa harga sebiji? means 'How much for one?'. Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? Got it. Lucas: And if you want two cucumbers, you say Saya mahu dua biji. Dua biji means 'two pieces'. Luna: Saya mahu dua biji. So biji is the counter, and we change the number. Lucas: Right. Now, you might want to check if the cucumber is fresh. You ask Timun ini segar? Timun ini segar? Luna: Timun ini segar? 'Is this cucumber fresh?' That seems useful. Lucas: Yes. And finally, if you want the seller to cut it, you say Boleh potong? Boleh potong? That means 'Can you cut it?'. Luna: Boleh potong? Good to know, because sometimes they're long. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick practice. Imagine you're at the market. You see cucumbers. What do you say first? Luna: Saya mahu timun. Lucas: Then you ask the price for one. Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: The seller says two ringgit per cucumber. You want two. Luna: Saya mahu dua biji. Lucas: Then you check if they're fresh. Luna: Timun ini segar? Lucas: Seller says yes. And you want them cut. Luna: Boleh potong? Lucas: Perfect. You did it. Now let's hear them all together: Saya mahu timun. Berapa harga sebiji? Saya mahu dua biji. Timun ini segar? Boleh potong? Luna: Saya mahu timun. Berapa harga sebiji? Saya mahu dua biji. Timun ini segar? Boleh potong? Oof, I think I got it. Lucas: You did. Practice those a few times and you'll be ready for your next market trip. Thanks for listening to Learn Malay with Fexingo. See you next time! Luna: Jumpa lagi! Practice your timun phrases, everyone.
