- 0:07Speaker 1: This immediate podcast. Welcome to Mediator Trivia, the only game
- 0:12Speaker 1: show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer new Arten.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Today we're joined by special guests and professional chef Andrew Zimmern.
- 0:20Speaker 1: In addition to Andrew, we also have Steve Brodie, Kevin
- 0:23Speaker 1: Karin Byron, and Sean Now. Andrew, how do you feel
- 0:27Speaker 1: about trivia? I love trivia? Do you yeah? The minutia
- 0:30Speaker 1: of the world fascinates me. And uh, in what way
- 0:34Speaker 1: do you consume trivia? If you love trivia? I'm a
- 0:37Speaker 1: voracious You're if you're If you stop being teachable in life,
- 0:41Speaker 1: you're a loser. So I life is an endless learning process,
- 0:45Speaker 1: so I I suck up a lot of information. Just
- 0:48Speaker 1: everything's trivia to you. I just absolutely adore it. So
- 0:51Speaker 1: if all ten questions have to do with uh, North
- 0:55Speaker 1: American fruits that are not consumed publicly, UH, I will
- 1:03Speaker 1: win that. Sadly, none of them are shit. Now, before
- 1:06Speaker 1: we get started, I have to tell you, Andrew, your
- 1:08Speaker 1: restaurants have served me the best stadium food I've ever had.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I'm a big Vikings and Twins fans, so I try
- 1:14Speaker 1: to make a regular pilgrimage like US Bank Stadium and
- 1:17Speaker 1: Target Field, And genuinely, the lamb sandwich from the asy
- 1:21Speaker 1: canteen is incredible. It's like too good for stadium food,
- 1:24Speaker 1: actually it is. And consequently that's why it's no longer
- 1:28Speaker 1: there at the stadium. Yeah, when did that stuff? During
- 1:32Speaker 1: COVID And then they came back with all the big
- 1:36Speaker 1: you know, all the big companies realized they were wasting
- 1:38Speaker 1: a lot of money paying people like me to do
- 1:40Speaker 1: food there and they would make more money off of
- 1:43Speaker 1: chips and uh diet coke. Was there a shift in
- 1:46Speaker 1: your lifetime where stadium food like got good all of
- 1:49Speaker 1: a sudden. Yes, when did that happen? Why? It was
- 1:53Speaker 1: two thousand seven. All of the all the big companies
- 1:57Speaker 1: that run food at stadiums near reports realized they had
- 2:01Speaker 1: a captive audience that was becoming more food wear and
- 2:04Speaker 1: so they reached out to well known personalities and put
- 2:08Speaker 1: their food into their first their local stadiums in airports,
- 2:13Speaker 1: and then if they had a national brand, perhaps they
- 2:15Speaker 1: got some other stuff. And so are our business. At
- 2:17Speaker 1: that point, we were in like seven stadiums and at
- 2:22Speaker 1: its height, six stadiums at its height. But what we
- 2:25Speaker 1: were doing, we we were putting in massive French rotisseries
- 2:30Speaker 1: and taking real wild pastor well pastured Minnesota lamb chickens. Uh,
- 2:39Speaker 1: you know, whole animal rotisserie of other guys. We put
- 2:43Speaker 1: pigs and goats and stuff on there, and and you
- 2:46Speaker 1: could buy it by the pound or on sandwiches, you know,
- 2:50Speaker 1: with homemade ice cream and homemade Uh. We made it
- 2:53Speaker 1: like a zeppe, like a little Italian doughnut hole. Um.
- 2:57Speaker 1: It was a great booth. It thundered business. Mean, it
- 3:00Speaker 1: was incredible. But they were also paying us a fee
- 3:03Speaker 1: to license it and all the rest of that kind
- 3:05Speaker 1: of stuff. So gradually all these companies have learned, why
- 3:09Speaker 1: are we paying an extra x percent to to these
- 3:13Speaker 1: well known people? That's said that makes just owned it ourselves.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Hurts my enthusiasm a little bit mine as well. I love,
- 3:20Speaker 1: by the way, I love That was one of my
- 3:22Speaker 1: favorite jobs ever because I got to make food for families.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Because if you're gonna pay fourteen dollars for a stale
- 3:31Speaker 1: piece of pizza that was made the day beforehand and
- 3:34Speaker 1: hot held in cardboard for twenty four to thirty two hours, um,
- 3:39Speaker 1: there's no way it curls your toes when you buy it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So we're ripping off parents and their kids. It's too
- 3:44Speaker 1: expensive for the average American family to go to a
- 3:46Speaker 1: sporting event. So we were like, if we're going to
- 3:49Speaker 1: charge whatever fourteen bucks for a jen sandwich, it that
- 3:52Speaker 1: that family better say that's the best chicken sandwich I
- 3:55Speaker 1: ever had. And I think in some cases we pulled
- 3:57Speaker 1: it off. I love it. You did it well. Now,
- 3:58Speaker 1: if you're not familiar, this is a ten round quiz
- 4:01Speaker 1: show with questions from meat eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and cooking, and there is a prize. Meat eater will
- 4:07Speaker 1: donate five dollars to the conservation organization of the winners
- 4:11Speaker 1: choosing And for the stat of the week, bet a
- 4:14Speaker 1: perfect game. We're gonna go to a thousand if you
- 4:17Speaker 1: can get thrown two nines. WHOA, I had a perfect game?
- 4:22Speaker 1: I think was it the first game ever? Spen? I
- 4:25Speaker 1: think it was the fourth game ever perfectly stat Steve Wow.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Now for the stat of the week this see Steve
- 4:37Speaker 1: was here, he was sitting in that chair when it happened.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You witnessed the perfect game? Yeah, yeah, whatever. Now the
- 4:45Speaker 1: stat of the week this week, we're going to look
- 4:47Speaker 1: at how different players perform in each vertical. We'll start
- 4:50Speaker 1: off with Steve. Steve's best category. Do you have a
- 4:52Speaker 1: guess as to what your best category is of the four?
- 4:56Speaker 1: This is a big question because I don't agree with
- 4:59Speaker 1: your categories. So fishing and fishing Fishing is your best
- 5:05Speaker 1: category where you get sixty five percent of questions correct,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and your worst category is hunting, where you get of
- 5:14Speaker 1: questions spread half of them. Right. Next up is Brodie.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Maybe it's like you're not that good at making those
- 5:22Speaker 1: questions that could be The next up is Brodie, whose
- 5:26Speaker 1: best category is hunting. Brodie gets an amazing eight seven
- 5:30Speaker 1: percent of hunting questions correct yes, and his worst category
- 5:36Speaker 1: is fishing, where he gets fifty three percent of questions correct.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Then we have Cal whose best categories cooking where he
- 5:43Speaker 1: gets seventy four percent of questions correct, and his worst
- 5:46Speaker 1: category is hunting, where he gets forty one percent of
- 5:49Speaker 1: questions correct. And finally there's the Honest, whose best category
- 5:53Speaker 1: is also cooking, where he gets seventy six percent of
- 5:55Speaker 1: questions correct, and his worst categories are conservation and hunting
- 5:59Speaker 1: where he gets fifty three percent of questions worst. Or
- 6:04Speaker 1: the rest of the category. Just how many times have
- 6:08Speaker 1: you played this? Like three or four times? I'm terrible.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm just here for color, commented, how do you do
- 6:13Speaker 1: in the cooking questions? I aced the cooking questions. I
- 6:16Speaker 1: keep trying to bribe Spencer to go real heavy in
- 6:18Speaker 1: the cooking for once, but it hasn't. I'd like to
- 6:21Speaker 1: point out that he'll usually throw Gas a bone, oh,
- 6:26Speaker 1: which is total bullshit. He threw the guest ten bones
- 6:29Speaker 1: last time. It didn't work out. Didn't work out for
- 6:32Speaker 1: the Gas now. On a previous episode of Meat Eat TRIVIAE,
- 6:37Speaker 1: we talked about how Anthony Bourdain said in his nine
- 6:41Speaker 1: book that you shouldn't order seafood from a restaurant on Monday.
- 6:44Speaker 1: His logic was that at the time, in his home
- 6:47Speaker 1: city of New York, fishmongers were closed on weekends, meaning
- 6:50Speaker 1: that when Monday's fish was served, it was at minimum
- 6:53Speaker 1: a few days old. But in a interview, Bourdain changed
- 6:57Speaker 1: his tune. Here's a quote that he gave Tech Insider.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Then look, do me one favor, people, please eat the
- 7:03Speaker 1: fish on Monday. That was sixteen years ago. It was
- 7:06Speaker 1: a very different world. Regrettably, that's you know, don't eat
- 7:09Speaker 1: fish on Monday is going to be on my headstone.
- 7:12Speaker 1: But it's almost two decades later things have changed. Eat
- 7:16Speaker 1: the damn fish. So there you have it. It is
- 7:20Speaker 1: okay to order seafood on a Monday. Is that a
- 7:24Speaker 1: law that you guys had had heard before, Kevin and
- 7:26Speaker 1: Andrew that that you've abided by or not? It just depends,
- 7:30Speaker 1: you know, Um, it's not. It was not like a
- 7:33Speaker 1: black and white scenario because it really has to do
- 7:35Speaker 1: with but it does have to do with your purveyors,
- 7:37Speaker 1: like and so a lot of folks would get it
- 7:39Speaker 1: in for several days. But there's also plenty of seafood
- 7:42Speaker 1: that can sit in ice for a few days and
- 7:44Speaker 1: be fine. A big deal. I'm old, So I remember
- 7:48Speaker 1: a time in New York when I was first coming
- 7:51Speaker 1: to this business as a teenager working summers, and your
- 7:56Speaker 1: your preveyors would deliver twice a week, right, So the
- 8:00Speaker 1: the don't eat fish on Monday was a great piece
- 8:03Speaker 1: of advice and why everyone could relate to it. Um.
- 8:07Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean very soon after that, the food
- 8:10Speaker 1: world exploded, uh probably even before Tony mentioned there, and
- 8:14Speaker 1: you can now get seafood delivered almost seven days a week.
- 8:18Speaker 1: From any part of the world. Correct, So that rule
- 8:22Speaker 1: does not don't eat sushi at a seven eleven. I
- 8:25Speaker 1: mean we're not there. That's the caveat is where you're
- 8:31Speaker 1: doing it. Discount sushi has always been a bad idea. Yeah. Yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 1: And with that, we're on a meat eater trivia play
- 8:38Speaker 1: the drop, Phil, Look, I need to know what I
- 8:43Speaker 1: stand to win everything. I'm saying, just tend to win everything.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Question one. This will be top Maul full choice, and
- 9:00Speaker 1: the topic is hunting. Which of these hunting magazines is
- 9:05Speaker 1: oldest Peterson's Hunting for Fish Game, North American White tail
- 9:10Speaker 1: Or Sports a Field. Again, which of these hunting magazines
- 9:15Speaker 1: is oldest Peterson's Hunting for Fish Game, North American White
- 9:20Speaker 1: tail Or Sports a Field. Some quick confident answers in
- 9:25Speaker 1: the room. It looked like I'm torn. I'll tell you that. Well,
- 9:33Speaker 1: I know which ones you're torn between. It's a hunting vertical,
- 9:36Speaker 1: so he'll get it right. When the like that's right,
- 9:39Speaker 1: this would be fish. There's some real moneyball stuff going
- 9:46Speaker 1: to be born out of this. It's turning into Baseball's
- 9:53Speaker 1: We're down in Louisiana. We had rented a house that
- 9:56Speaker 1: had a pool table and we were playing three ball
- 9:58Speaker 1: for dollars else fun. Yeah, I walked off with a
- 10:01Speaker 1: big stack cash. Does everybody have an answer? I went
- 10:06Speaker 1: to bed your options again, Brodie, your Peter for a
- 10:09Speaker 1: fish game North American white tail and trying to confuse me.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Now I know what he's debating. You tell me when
- 10:15Speaker 1: you're good, and we will rebel my original Brodie's brain
- 10:21Speaker 1: is arguing with its humunculous go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 10:25Speaker 1: We have Steve saying sports of field, Andrew saying sports
- 10:27Speaker 1: the field, Kevin saying sports the field, Brodie saying sports
- 10:30Speaker 1: the field, Karan saying for fish game, Sean saying sports
- 10:33Speaker 1: the field, and Byron saying sports the field. That's the
- 10:36Speaker 1: correct ANSWER's sports the field. And I know you were
- 10:39Speaker 1: debating for a fishing game and Krine scratched out sports
- 10:42Speaker 1: the field and went for a fishing game Sports of Field.
- 10:44Speaker 1: That's been this outdoor publication in North America. It wasn't
- 10:49Speaker 1: even really It's like it's not like what it's still
- 10:51Speaker 1: a thing. It always gets like bought by some one
- 10:53Speaker 1: or another. I mean they're still putting out six issues
- 10:55Speaker 1: a year, so it's like when I was a kid.
- 10:59Speaker 1: They like it covered everything like how to catch catfish
- 11:03Speaker 1: on cut made, And it's kind of like, didn't it
- 11:06Speaker 1: become kind of a marketing rag? Like didn't. Yeah, it's
- 11:10Speaker 1: very like travel hunt overseas. Yeah, well it's Safari clubs.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I don't know. It wasn't them either way. The next question,
- 11:18Speaker 1: it was found in eighteen eight seven. F Fish Game
- 11:20Speaker 1: was founded in nineteen, Peterson's Hunting in nineteen seventy three
- 11:24Speaker 1: in North American White till in nineteen eighty two. Amazingly,
- 11:26Speaker 1: Sports of Field still publishes six issues per year. Even
- 11:30Speaker 1: at one hundred and thirty five years old, its name
- 11:35Speaker 1: is still actively used. Yeah, it's not the same publication.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's the same thing. It wasn't thirty
- 11:40Speaker 1: five years ago. Question to the topic is cooking. If
- 11:44Speaker 1: someone cooks you squab, what kind of bird are you eating?
- 11:50Speaker 1: If someone cooks you squab, what kind of bird are
- 11:53Speaker 1: you eating? Again? Some quick answers in the room. I
- 11:57Speaker 1: don't want Kevin to see my You don't think he
- 12:01Speaker 1: knows No, Listen, I was making a joke. I don't
- 12:06Speaker 1: want to say what my problem is because it will
- 12:08Speaker 1: be a hint yeah, could be having a real hard time.
- 12:13Speaker 1: This is a dictionary definition of the word. So whatever
- 12:15Speaker 1: your argument is going to be, you have to take
- 12:17Speaker 1: it up with the dictionary. I have a feeling problems.
- 12:23Speaker 1: My problem is going to be with other people's ship.
- 12:26Speaker 1: If someone cooks you squab, what kind of bird are
- 12:28Speaker 1: you eating? Because everybody have an answer, it's going to
- 12:30Speaker 1: be with other people's stuff waiting on. You know what
- 12:34Speaker 1: happens in trivia, Winners laugh and tell jokes and losers say,
- 12:37Speaker 1: next question. I think we just had the next question
- 12:41Speaker 1: in the room. One question, Ago, Karan, how are we doing?
- 12:46Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 12:49Speaker 1: Eurasian rock dove, Andrew saying pigeon, Kevin says, Sean saying pigeon,
- 12:56Speaker 1: and Byron saying pigeon. Answer beforehand, don't overthink, kid, that
- 13:00Speaker 1: was your advice to The correct answer is pigeon. They're
- 13:03Speaker 1: the same. They're the same. We'll give it to you,
- 13:07Speaker 1: but you can't give it to them. Yes, they get
- 13:09Speaker 1: these too many kinds of pigeons. The dictionary says it's
- 13:12Speaker 1: an immature pigeon. Do you know that you can hunt
- 13:15Speaker 1: them with h your hands or rocks in almost every
- 13:20Speaker 1: state in the Union, because there's a nuisance species because
- 13:23Speaker 1: their guano degrades marble on statues, one of the few
- 13:26Speaker 1: birds whose poop is so toxic. And so if if
- 13:30Speaker 1: you can, you can use butterfly nets, you can use
- 13:33Speaker 1: rock stones, whatever, can't shoot them. But in every municipality,
- 13:37Speaker 1: men like writing downtown just have at it. Yeah, But
- 13:39Speaker 1: the way to do it then is go outside the
- 13:42Speaker 1: city into a silage field or cornfield, set some decoys
- 13:45Speaker 1: and what do you mean what kind of pigeon? Did
- 13:49Speaker 1: you mean street pigeon? Pigeons? Would spencer? Dear God. Now,
- 13:57Speaker 1: my father in law grew up in rural South Dakota.
- 13:59Speaker 1: He's said that when he was a kid, people would
- 14:01Speaker 1: stop by the farm and ask you if they could
- 14:03Speaker 1: check their silos and barns for squab. But that practice
- 14:06Speaker 1: largely died out in the early eighties, and my father
- 14:09Speaker 1: in law hasn't got a squab hunting request in nearly
- 14:12Speaker 1: forty years. Have him call me go anywhere. It's so delicious,
- 14:17Speaker 1: didn't you U used to grab him out from underneath bridges, Steve, Yeah,
- 14:21Speaker 1: and then we called him, sorry, I haven't bite. We
- 14:26Speaker 1: had a big pole with a pizza box on the
- 14:28Speaker 1: end of it and another pole of the landing net
- 14:31Speaker 1: on the end of it. And they like to live
- 14:33Speaker 1: behind air conditioning units outside of restaurants and ship So
- 14:38Speaker 1: you just block one side of the a C unit
- 14:40Speaker 1: with the cardboard box blocked the air side of a
- 14:42Speaker 1: C unit with the gnat. Get the grown ups, then
- 14:46Speaker 1: we get the babies. And I would take the grown
- 14:48Speaker 1: ups and raiseals and harvest their babies. Nice, very smart
- 14:53Speaker 1: and the adults. Question three is using the adults to propagate.
- 14:57Speaker 1: There you go. Question through the topic is concer. This
- 15:01Speaker 1: is our listener question of the Week, which was won
- 15:03Speaker 1: by Brandon Wealthy for sending this great question. Brandon is
- 15:07Speaker 1: going to get a blaze orange Meat Eater best that
- 15:09Speaker 1: was signed by Steve just right now fresh signed. If
- 15:12Speaker 1: you want a chance to win the listener question of
- 15:14Speaker 1: the Week, sent your questions to Trivia at the meat
- 15:16Speaker 1: eater dot com. This state is the only place in
- 15:21Speaker 1: the world where the range of American alligators and American
- 15:24Speaker 1: crocodiles overlap. What is it again? This state is the
- 15:31Speaker 1: only place in the world where the range of American
- 15:33Speaker 1: alligators and American crocodiles overlap. What is it? Boston? Does
- 15:44Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? Did you get them all right
- 15:48Speaker 1: so far? Brody? I did? Indeed? I mean this is
- 15:55Speaker 1: this is every time you haven't been here for it
- 15:57Speaker 1: is every single trivia. We had a separate rate then
- 16:00Speaker 1: Brody used to sit here. But like the first, like
- 16:04Speaker 1: the first question there is we're giving each other the
- 16:06Speaker 1: stair down from you got to choose between two. Likely
- 16:10Speaker 1: I've got a pretty good cell phone video of those
- 16:11Speaker 1: two giving each other the stink guy, Oh, alligators and crocodiles.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 16:23Speaker 1: We have Steve saying Florida, Andrew saying Florida, Kevin saying
- 16:26Speaker 1: Florida's Florida, Karan sang Louisiana, Sean saying Texas, and Byron
- 16:31Speaker 1: sang Louisiana. The correct answer is Florida. I have it.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I have it on a pretty good authority that someone
- 16:40Speaker 1: just found a Burmese python in South Louisiana. Let me
- 16:46Speaker 1: just about her time, right. I was trying to think
- 16:48Speaker 1: sports teams. There's no crocodile sports team, is there? The crocs? No,
- 16:53Speaker 1: there's not a lot of those probably a single, a
- 16:56Speaker 1: baseball team or something someone. But I think the whole
- 17:00Speaker 1: Mario Batali things sort of crushed that. Yeah. Yeah, I
- 17:03Speaker 1: can't say anything about I'm from Georgia, so like our
- 17:06Speaker 1: feelings on Florida that it should just break off and
- 17:08Speaker 1: float into the ocean. So I'm not really allowed to
- 17:11Speaker 1: weigh in with an opinion now. Although they look similar
- 17:14Speaker 1: and share a range in South Florida. Gators and crocs
- 17:17Speaker 1: can't mate, but American crocs and Cuban crocs can hybridize,
- 17:22Speaker 1: which has biologists concerned. They fear that because their habitat
- 17:25Speaker 1: is shrinking, it may lead to American Cuban hybrids that
- 17:29Speaker 1: caused true Cuban crocodiles to vanish altogether. Man, they're only
- 17:34Speaker 1: like ninety miles apart. How different can they be? Cubans
- 17:39Speaker 1: in the ninety miles worth of different? Question for the
- 17:44Speaker 1: topic is white tails. He might want to read a
- 17:46Speaker 1: book about bio island geography songs to me that to
- 17:52Speaker 1: do that. Question for the topic is white tails. Coyotes
- 17:56Speaker 1: killed the most white tail fonds across the United States.
- 18:00Speaker 1: What predator is second? Coyotes killed the most white tail
- 18:06Speaker 1: fons across the United States? What predator is second? We're
- 18:13Speaker 1: looking for what animal kills the second most amount of
- 18:17Speaker 1: white tail fons? He's throwing an adjective or two in
- 18:19Speaker 1: there for me, What are you looking for? Is this
- 18:24Speaker 1: going to be one of them? Again? Conflicted? Two answers.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Coots killed the most white tail fons across the United States?
- 18:33Speaker 1: What predator is second? But but I have I'll talk
- 18:43Speaker 1: I might have the same question. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you
- 18:46Speaker 1: know what we're talking? Yes, does everybody have an answer? Yes?
- 18:52Speaker 1: I would much preferred you. Well, yeah, kran Korean, I
- 19:01Speaker 1: don't know if you know. As we're on a tight schedule.
- 19:03Speaker 1: We got a guest who has a flight to catch
- 19:04Speaker 1: not a crocodile there for few hours and to have
- 19:07Speaker 1: an empty board. It's not a crocodile. Koran grabbing my
- 19:11Speaker 1: phone for Steve's objection. Here, what do you do with
- 19:14Speaker 1: your phone? Get a photo of you yelling at Spencer question,
- 19:19Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 19:21Speaker 1: black bear, Andrew saying fox, Kevin saying fox, Brodie saying
- 19:25Speaker 1: black bear, Korean saying black bear, Sean saying dogs, and
- 19:29Speaker 1: Byron crossed out two answers, and he says, black bears
- 19:33Speaker 1: is what point across to put it put when you
- 19:39Speaker 1: put that on there, I crossed this one out and
- 19:41Speaker 1: then wrote that one, and then I crossed that one
- 19:44Speaker 1: out and pointed an arrow to the first thing. Next
- 19:45Speaker 1: time we should just rewrite it. The the correct answer
- 19:51Speaker 1: is black bears. Well, here's my deal. I got it right,
- 19:54Speaker 1: so I don't really care. But are you thinking like
- 19:56Speaker 1: were in the domestic dogs? Yeah. This This is according
- 20:00Speaker 1: to a Penn State University study who analyzed data from
- 20:03Speaker 1: twenty nine other studies that were done across the country.
- 20:06Speaker 1: They looked at the cause of death for nearly one
- 20:09Speaker 1: thousand fonds and found that about seventy were coyotes and
- 20:13Speaker 1: four were black bears. Distant second, very very distant. Yeah,
- 20:19Speaker 1: m m. That's a good question. Became a good question. Uh,
- 20:24Speaker 1: two minutes before. It wasn't question five. It was I
- 20:27Speaker 1: would have preferred this regionality, and then I would have
- 20:31Speaker 1: preferred that you as a host excluded the wild dog,
- 20:34Speaker 1: because I don't know if that's well captured like natural
- 20:37Speaker 1: regionality was was the United States because that's where the
- 20:40Speaker 1: study took place. They took him across the country. Question
- 20:43Speaker 1: five the topics. I am complain. This next great question
- 20:50Speaker 1: comes to was via Chrissie mccoon. If you have a
- 20:52Speaker 1: question you think is right for meata to trivia, you
- 20:54Speaker 1: can send it to trivia at the meat eator dot com.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Also known as ears stones, these hard structures located behind
- 21:02Speaker 1: the brain allow biologists to age bony fish. Me too,
- 21:09Speaker 1: and I think the fellas that are done, it might
- 21:11Speaker 1: be going for five for five here's the question again.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Also known as earstones, these hard structures located behind the
- 21:18Speaker 1: brain allow biologists to age bony fish. And I think
- 21:25Speaker 1: if Brodie and Steve get this right there, pitching a
- 21:27Speaker 1: perfect game, we will get a scoreboard update officially from
- 21:31Speaker 1: Phil after this flip, Me and Brody should final with
- 21:35Speaker 1: a team up instead of being against each other. Now
- 21:39Speaker 1: this is way more fun. Yeah, we could do We
- 21:41Speaker 1: could do it like a partner's tournament or something tournament
- 21:45Speaker 1: of champions suation, great game. Does everybody have an answer?
- 21:54Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal the answers we have Steve saying,
- 21:57Speaker 1: Andrew saying antlers, Kevin saying ears owns, Brody saying creative
- 22:02Speaker 1: without answers, Shouting without an answer Byron saying your stones
- 22:05Speaker 1: the correct answer. It's also your stones, just for the record,
- 22:11Speaker 1: otherwise known as antlers aid fish in balance and hearing
- 22:17Speaker 1: to age of fish. Using an odalth, you count the
- 22:19Speaker 1: number of rings just like you would with a tree.
- 22:21Speaker 1: But some fish like sharks raise and land praise don't
- 22:25Speaker 1: have them think kosher either. Phil hit us with a
- 22:29Speaker 1: scoreboard update. We are halfway through the game of trivia.
- 22:32Speaker 1: We are really quick before I actually have a correction.
- 22:35Speaker 1: A matter of housekeeping, I was deemed by Anthony Jensen
- 22:39Speaker 1: on Instagram. Apparently I've been reading the standings incorrectly. When
- 22:45Speaker 1: people are tied, I say, like, you know, tied for first,
- 22:47Speaker 1: Stephen Rodi tied for Second's essentially what he says. I
- 22:55Speaker 1: don't understand. I'm just speak what he said. I'm sorry
- 22:58Speaker 1: to be this O c D. But when breaking down
- 22:59Speaker 1: a competition's current ranking, you wouldn't say tied for third
- 23:03Speaker 1: if there are people tied for second. If there's a
- 23:04Speaker 1: two way tied for first, the next ranking is third
- 23:07Speaker 1: or tied for third. So like tied for yes, and
- 23:10Speaker 1: he says, again, sorry to be an Anthony, thank you
- 23:12Speaker 1: for your apology, because you completely wasted my time. I
- 23:14Speaker 1: will not be changing the way I do this. But
- 23:16Speaker 1: I didn't learn something today. Um is that? Wow? That's
- 23:20Speaker 1: like next level because like that you knew the other
- 23:23Speaker 1: name of earstones, but you didn't know that you count one,
- 23:27Speaker 1: two then three? No, no idea? Yeah, because I think
- 23:30Speaker 1: like they give out medals in the Olympics and if
- 23:32Speaker 1: like top two tied, two golds and then they give
- 23:34Speaker 1: out a bronze, Yeah for whoever you know came in
- 23:39Speaker 1: behind those two people. If you at golf boards and
- 23:43Speaker 1: the Olympics are gonna be two golds, no silver and one.
- 23:45Speaker 1: But I think that might be how they do it.
- 23:47Speaker 1: That is how the standing just want to golf standings
- 23:52Speaker 1: is these? It doesn't want to sho this is my
- 23:57Speaker 1: cous another with one point. We have coming up is
- 24:03Speaker 1: Sean with two points, and then uh tied for second place.
- 24:08Speaker 1: We have Kevin Byron and Andrew All with three points
- 24:11Speaker 1: and then in first perfect game five points apiece, Brodie
- 24:14Speaker 1: and Steve tension in the room. Oh my god, what's
- 24:20Speaker 1: y'all team name gonna be? Are you going with Stody?
- 24:22Speaker 1: Are you going with question six? The topic is woodsmanship.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Name one of the five states with the most confirmed
- 24:43Speaker 1: cases of lime disease in nineteen Name one of the
- 24:49Speaker 1: five states with the most confirmed cases of lime disease in.
- 24:54Speaker 1: The quickest answer in the room was Andrew, you know
- 24:57Speaker 1: this stone cold again? Looking for one of the five
- 25:01Speaker 1: states with the most confirmed cases of lime disease in.
- 25:07Speaker 1: This is a stat from the CDC. Does everybody have
- 25:12Speaker 1: an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 25:16Speaker 1: Steve saying New York, Andrew saying Minnesota, Kevin saying Colorado,
- 25:20Speaker 1: Brodie saying Pennsylvania, Kran saying New York, Shawn saying Connecticut,
- 25:25Speaker 1: and Byron saying Maine. We play a game where I
- 25:26Speaker 1: guess who all has it right? Who do you think
- 25:29Speaker 1: got it wrong? All hold up their things already erased
- 25:34Speaker 1: it all right, We're gonna reveal you. I think I think,
- 25:36Speaker 1: I think Byron might be wrong. Byron says Maine. The
- 25:40Speaker 1: top five are Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maine, in Wisconsin.
- 25:48Speaker 1: What in most years, Pennsylvania destroys the rest of the
- 25:52Speaker 1: country when it comes to lime disease. They had seven
- 25:56Speaker 1: thousand cases of lime disease. That's followed by New York
- 25:59Speaker 1: with three thousand. New Jersey with hundred, Maine with fifteen
- 26:03Speaker 1: hundred in Wisconsin with a thousand. Just missing out in
- 26:07Speaker 1: the top five are New Hampshire, Minnesota, Maryland, Connecticut, and Virginia.
- 26:11Speaker 1: That's actually way lower than I would think. Ye I
- 26:14Speaker 1: had they had thirty thousand confirmed. Idd They don't test.
- 26:21Speaker 1: This is why I thought Minnesota was top rated, because
- 26:23Speaker 1: if anybody has a tick and you even think that
- 26:26Speaker 1: the head or any other part of it is in there,
- 26:29Speaker 1: they don't test you at all. You immediately go on it.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Because in Minnesota of the people will come in for
- 26:36Speaker 1: it develops are all carrying it. Yeah, we're a question seven.
- 26:42Speaker 1: The topic is cooking. This red spice, which comes from
- 26:46Speaker 1: a purple flower native to the Mediterranean, is considered to
- 26:50Speaker 1: be the most expensive spice in the world. What is it?
- 26:57Speaker 1: This red spice, which comes from a purple flower or
- 27:00Speaker 1: native to the Mediterranean, is considered to be the most
- 27:03Speaker 1: expensive spice in the world. God, dude, pitched softball? What
- 27:07Speaker 1: is it? What does your wife's score on this round?
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think you've got four questions elsewhere? That's right. I
- 27:16Speaker 1: think from now when I'm writing the food questions for you,
- 27:19Speaker 1: sending them to you every week, please do it. That'd
- 27:22Speaker 1: be a great favor to him. Man, that's right, and
- 27:24Speaker 1: you want you're win that for you Orange vest one
- 27:28Speaker 1: more time. This red spice, which comes from a purple
- 27:30Speaker 1: flower native to the Mediterranean, is considered to be the
- 27:33Speaker 1: most expensive spice in the world. Does everybody have an answer?
- 27:38Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying saffron.
- 27:41Speaker 1: What does that say? S saffron? I just spelled a
- 27:44Speaker 1: pH F episode saying saffron, Kevin saying saffron, proudly saying saffron,
- 27:49Speaker 1: Crin saying saffron shown without an answer, and Byron saying saffron.
- 27:53Speaker 1: That is the correct answer, saffron. Authentic saffron can cost
- 27:58Speaker 1: about five dollars per out. It's so expensive because it's
- 28:01Speaker 1: an incredibly labor intensive crop with a small output and
- 28:05Speaker 1: short harvest window. Its taste is described as sweet, floral,
- 28:09Speaker 1: and pungent. If you want to learn how to cook
- 28:11Speaker 1: with it, then check out Andrew's recipe for risotto Milanese
- 28:15Speaker 1: on Andrew Zimmern dot com. And don't think that you're
- 28:19Speaker 1: just gonna put a whole bunch in there because it
- 28:21Speaker 1: must be good, because holy shit, what a way to
- 28:23Speaker 1: ruin something man. Yes, when it says like a so
- 28:26Speaker 1: there is there is it's use possibly work there. There
- 28:34Speaker 1: is some debate about whether or not it's uh first
- 28:38Speaker 1: came from the Mediterranean or Central Asia, which has got
- 28:43Speaker 1: some some serious legs to it. What else do you cook?
- 28:48Speaker 1: What else do you use saffron? Well, yeah, you know,
- 28:52Speaker 1: beery got a lot of Indian food uses saffron, a
- 28:55Speaker 1: lot of Afghani, Iranian, Central Asian foods use it. Yeah,
- 29:00Speaker 1: it's It was used as a form of money for
- 29:04Speaker 1: a long time on ancient spice roots. It was used
- 29:06Speaker 1: for makeup, it was used for perfumes. Would you support
- 29:10Speaker 1: this statement that in America most of it is bought
- 29:12Speaker 1: by people fixing to make paya. Yes. I would also
- 29:16Speaker 1: support the statement that most of what's sold here in
- 29:18Speaker 1: the United States does not even measure up to real saffron,
- 29:23Speaker 1: and in fact, even the most expensive stuff that you
- 29:25Speaker 1: can buy here still has a little bit of orange
- 29:28Speaker 1: flange at the end of the thread. Um which in
- 29:33Speaker 1: Afghanistan and Iran where the best saffron in the world,
- 29:36Speaker 1: My opinion grows, it is dark red from end to end,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and when I travel to countries that trade with those
- 29:45Speaker 1: UH nations. That is the first thing that I smuggle
- 29:49Speaker 1: home is real saffron, which blows all the other stuff. Well,
- 29:55Speaker 1: you don't want to places have the spice bottle, the
- 29:58Speaker 1: rays and grocery stores. It's like a pre determined that
- 30:00Speaker 1: stuff don't even bother. And if I have, then in
- 30:03Speaker 1: the bottle is a bag and in the bag is
- 30:05Speaker 1: like two or three pieces. But in order to for
- 30:08Speaker 1: display purposes they still put it. You think you should
- 30:12Speaker 1: buy it online from Caloustians or another you know, you know.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Penzi is another really reputable UH company. There is an
- 30:22Speaker 1: amazing group called Roomy out of Afghanistan and it's founded
- 30:27Speaker 1: by uh Iraqi and Afghani war vets Um and they
- 30:32Speaker 1: started a spice company to try to give farmers in
- 30:36Speaker 1: that country an option for another person other than poppies.
- 30:39Speaker 1: And it's a roomy r u M I I think
- 30:42Speaker 1: it's Roomy. Spice dot Com is an organization that I
- 30:45Speaker 1: just think it is fantastic. Yeah. I feel like if
- 30:48Speaker 1: you go into the grocery store and you see UH
- 30:50Speaker 1: saffron and like a McCormick bottle or something, don't buy it.
- 30:53Speaker 1: It'll say saffron and big letters but then really small
- 30:55Speaker 1: ones above it is like Spanish, okay, something like that.
- 30:57Speaker 1: You have you tried the roomy products there line of products.
- 31:01Speaker 1: I actually very luckily where we live in Maine. I
- 31:03Speaker 1: have a neighbor who's from Afghanistan and she gets it
- 31:06Speaker 1: like she gives me her family stuff. They send it
- 31:09Speaker 1: over to her and I pay her get ready thirty
- 31:12Speaker 1: dollars for three ounces of and and it is and
- 31:16Speaker 1: it's it's unreal. Yeah, it's that kind of Saffron has
- 31:20Speaker 1: as much in common with supermarket staffer. Saffron is my
- 31:23Speaker 1: standing in your garage makes me your car full style.
- 31:29Speaker 1: We want a question a we will get a scoreboard
- 31:31Speaker 1: update after this. The topic is biology and this X
- 31:34Speaker 1: ray question comes to us from Ryan Baldridge. If you
- 31:37Speaker 1: have a question you think is right for meatat to Trivia,
- 31:39Speaker 1: you can send it to trivia at the meat eator
- 31:41Speaker 1: dot com. There's only one bird in the world that
- 31:44Speaker 1: can fly forwards, backwards, upside down and hover. What is it?
- 31:50Speaker 1: Only one bird in the world that can fly forwards, backwards,
- 31:55Speaker 1: upside down and hover? What is it Larry bird? That's good?
- 32:05Speaker 1: Some quick answers in the room. A slow answer from Steve.
- 32:10Speaker 1: That's because you tripped him up. He's still arguing with
- 32:12Speaker 1: the He's like, what bird? Yeah, for like you want
- 32:22Speaker 1: the Linnaean name, Like we're looking for a species or
- 32:24Speaker 1: a broad whatever you think that you were going with
- 32:27Speaker 1: extant or or one from there gonna put down a dinosaur?
- 32:34Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? A gain looking for the
- 32:36Speaker 1: only bird can fly forwards, backwards, upside down and hover.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 32:44Speaker 1: the what does that say? Harrier? Harrier? Because hummingbirds, there's thousands,
- 32:49Speaker 1: there's dozens of hummingbirds, and you're saying hummingbird, Kevin saying hummingbird.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Brod he's saying hummingbird, Kuran saying seagull, Sean saying hummingbird,
- 32:57Speaker 1: and Byron saying hummingbird. The correct answer is hummingbirds. That's bullshit, dude.
- 33:01Speaker 1: So there's too many kinds of hummingbirds. So I didn't
- 33:03Speaker 1: even know the harrier was a type of hummingbird. That's
- 33:05Speaker 1: the that's why they named the jets a northern harrier. Hummingbird,
- 33:12Speaker 1: but that's not a kind we're going to give you
- 33:14Speaker 1: it getting harrier isn't a hummingbird. I don't. I didn't
- 33:18Speaker 1: say it's a humming I thought you were saying that
- 33:20Speaker 1: is the type of hummingbird you were just going to
- 33:23Speaker 1: I thought he was saying that was a type of hummingbird. Listen, man,
- 33:27Speaker 1: you can't just say humming bird because there's too many
- 33:28Speaker 1: kinds of hummingbirds, and I don't know that all of
- 33:30Speaker 1: them have that capability. It's like you, whether you know
- 33:32Speaker 1: whether they do or don't. Hummingbirds break all the rules,
- 33:38Speaker 1: will flight. Not only can they fly in any direction,
- 33:40Speaker 1: but they also can hit speeds of seventy five miles
- 33:43Speaker 1: per hour and come to a complete stop in the
- 33:46Speaker 1: space no longer than you're index finger. Brody's winning, Phil
- 33:49Speaker 1: hit us with the scoreboard up. Great now Brodie's winning.
- 33:52Speaker 1: It's not over yet. That's right now. Brody is winning.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Uh if we have Byron in third place with six points,
- 34:00Speaker 1: Stephen Ronella in second place with seven points, and pitching
- 34:03Speaker 1: and perfect game so far with eight points? Is Broody Anderson?
- 34:07Speaker 1: How many questions are do we have yet? Two questions?
- 34:11Speaker 1: Then there's there's spar from over. Well it's technically two
- 34:15Speaker 1: from over, but question nine the topic is hunting. North
- 34:23Speaker 1: America's longest mule dear migration is a one hundred fifty
- 34:27Speaker 1: mile journey that starts in Wyoming and ends in what state.
- 34:33Speaker 1: North America's longest mule deer migration is a one hundred
- 34:37Speaker 1: fifty mile journey that starts in Wyoming and ends in
- 34:41Speaker 1: what state. Steve was writing while I was about a
- 34:45Speaker 1: third of the way through the question again, this starts
- 34:49Speaker 1: in Wyoming and ends in what state? Is a one
- 34:52Speaker 1: hundred fifty mile mule deer migration? I thought you were
- 34:55Speaker 1: looking for the name of the migration. That's why I
- 34:57Speaker 1: started some quick answers in the room. This really shows
- 35:02Speaker 1: how much I need to relearn about my adjacent states.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Where you're like, is that state? Does everybody have an answer?
- 35:18Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying Wyoming,
- 35:21Speaker 1: Andrew saying Colorado, Kevin saying Utah, Brody saying Wyoming, Krin
- 35:24Speaker 1: saying Idaho, Sean saying Colorado, and Byron saying Colorado. The
- 35:28Speaker 1: correct answer is Wyoming. Question. These are the questions they
- 35:33Speaker 1: love ne neck No, but this is where your advice
- 35:38Speaker 1: go with your My first insect was Wyoming. I was like, No,
- 35:41Speaker 1: that's too obvious. There's even think Colorado is adjacent. You
- 35:45Speaker 1: know it is? Yeah? Is it right below? Basically, this
- 35:49Speaker 1: is known as the Red Desert to Hoback migration, which
- 35:52Speaker 1: was first discovered in there about one thousand mulee's in
- 35:56Speaker 1: the herd. These deer spend four months each year migrating
- 35:59Speaker 1: cross many rivers and highways as well as over one
- 36:02Speaker 1: hundred fences. I've been trying to draw a tag on
- 36:05Speaker 1: that migration path for a long what's the interest? Is
- 36:08Speaker 1: they pass Mulier that don't migrate? Yeah? And when they
- 36:11Speaker 1: I think these thousand joined like four thousand when they
- 36:14Speaker 1: get there really strange. I think the phrasing of that question, Yeah,
- 36:19Speaker 1: that was That was difect phrasing of a question. Why
- 36:22Speaker 1: not just ask what state has the longest? Too easy?
- 36:25Speaker 1: Too easy? Then that I don't think everybody knows. But Phil,
- 36:29Speaker 1: we are onto the final question. Give us a scoreboard update.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Steve has eight points, Brody has nine points. So we
- 36:36Speaker 1: need Brody to choke on this last question. Oh man,
- 36:39Speaker 1: the perfect game. We could see it again and he
- 36:41Speaker 1: would get a thousand dollar donation instead of five hundred.
- 36:45Speaker 1: The topic is conservation and This last great question comes
- 36:48Speaker 1: to us from Daniel Clark. If you have a question
- 36:50Speaker 1: you think is right for Meat Eater Trivia, you can
- 36:52Speaker 1: send it to trivia at the meat eater dot com.
- 36:55Speaker 1: What country was given its first elk and moose? By
- 36:58Speaker 1: Teddy Roosevelt? What country was given its first elk and
- 37:06Speaker 1: moose by Teddy Roosevelt. We do not have an answer
- 37:09Speaker 1: in the room yet. Wow, Brody needs this one to
- 37:14Speaker 1: go ten for ten? What country was given its first
- 37:20Speaker 1: elk and moose? By Teddy Roosevelt? Can hear a pin
- 37:24Speaker 1: drop in here right now? They are thinking really hard?
- 37:31Speaker 1: That is a home dinger. Now the topic here is conservation,
- 37:36Speaker 1: which I think for both of you go into your
- 37:39Speaker 1: second best category. What were you worried was going to
- 37:43Speaker 1: happen there? I also see now we have multiple white
- 37:47Speaker 1: boards with suck at Brodyer number back if anyone wants
- 37:51Speaker 1: to add that to their The final question, what country
- 37:55Speaker 1: was given its first elk and moose by Teddy Roosevelt?
- 37:59Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Even if you're not playing
- 38:02Speaker 1: for first place, you should still write down an answer
- 38:04Speaker 1: because we keep a very tight baseball box score that
- 38:08Speaker 1: this is surely going to affect that again to go
- 38:11Speaker 1: to river question. We need to get this wrong and
- 38:16Speaker 1: Steve to get this right. We already go ahead and
- 38:21Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Steve saying England, Andrew saying Britain. Well,
- 38:26Speaker 1: Kevin saying you Britain, England, Brody saying England, Kan saying
- 38:30Speaker 1: uk Sean saying Japan, and Byron saying England. The correct
- 38:34Speaker 1: answer is New Zealand. Got it wrong. Brody got it wrong.
- 38:43Speaker 1: He avoids the perfect game, but he beats Steve Man.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Why didn't I think of that? And Byron was from
- 38:52Speaker 1: somewhere man. Brody was kind of disappointed with himself there.
- 38:55Speaker 1: He didn't look like a guy who just won media
- 38:57Speaker 1: to that secretly rooting for still Because here's the fascinating question.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Remember when Roosevelt was president, So you have to think yourself,
- 39:08Speaker 1: what countries were even countries back then? And I wasn't
- 39:13Speaker 1: even sure that I knew Australia was a country. But
- 39:16Speaker 1: as I'm going around the globe, I'm thinking who do
- 39:19Speaker 1: we trade with? Who has the Was it part of
- 39:21Speaker 1: his big stick tour? Roosevelt gave them eighteen elk in
- 39:25Speaker 1: nineteen o nine ten moose in nineteen ten. The descendants
- 39:29Speaker 1: of those elk are still found there today, but it's
- 39:32Speaker 1: believed the moose have disappeared. Sightings have been rare since
- 39:36Speaker 1: the last one was killed in nineteen fifty six, but
- 39:38Speaker 1: scientists did find moose hair samples there in two thousand two.
- 39:43Speaker 1: So it's like New Zealand's version of Bigfoot. We should
- 39:45Speaker 1: give a moose. That's what threw me on hunted in
- 39:48Speaker 1: New Zealand a lot, and I was like, I could
- 39:51Speaker 1: what's new the elk were American, but I'm like, I
- 39:54Speaker 1: didn't even know. I'm sure they have country. Then what
- 40:01Speaker 1: happens next is we're getting nine right and winning meeting.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I've gotten that right. You get to choose where the
- 40:06Speaker 1: five dollar conservation organization donation goes. So what's it gonna be?
- 40:11Speaker 1: The meat eat or land access, the meat Eater Land
