- 0:00Speaker 1: Information has become scalable in a way never before imagined. Knowledge,
- 0:04Speaker 1: once scarce, expensive, tightly controlled, is now abundant, faster, and everywhere.
- 0:11Speaker 1: You might think that story begins with the Internet or
- 0:13Speaker 1: social media or artificial intelligence, but it doesn't. The year
- 0:17Speaker 1: is fourteen forty, The place means Germany and the man
- 0:21Speaker 1: Johann Gutenberg. His invention the printing press changed everything. Movable type,
- 0:27Speaker 1: oil based ink, a mechanical press. Suddenly, ideas could travel,
- 0:31Speaker 1: Books could be produced faster, cheaper, and in numbers never
- 0:35Speaker 1: before possible. In fourteen fifty five, about one hundred and
- 0:39Speaker 1: eighty Bibles rolled off that press, without the errors and
- 0:42Speaker 1: without the years of hand copying. And just like today,
- 0:46Speaker 1: progress met resistance. The church feared losing control, Scribes feared
- 0:52Speaker 1: losing jobs, leaders feared the spread of dangerous ideas. Sound
- 0:57Speaker 1: familiar because every generation faces this moment. Innovation arrives and
- 1:01Speaker 1: with it uncertainty. But history gives us perspective. The printing
- 1:06Speaker 1: press didn't destroy society, it advanced it. Still that doesn't
- 1:10Speaker 1: mean ignore the concerns. It means address them openly, honestly,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and early. Because now it's our turn. Here in West Virginia,
- 1:19Speaker 1: The debate is over data centers, artificial intelligence, a growing
- 1:23Speaker 1: data economy, jobs, tax revenue, opportunity. Some are for it,
- 1:28Speaker 1: some are against it. That's not a problem, that's healthy,
- 1:32Speaker 1: But understanding why that matters. Here's the truth. Data centers
- 1:37Speaker 1: are coming, if not here, somewhere else, and for once,
- 1:41Speaker 1: West Virginia has an advantage energy. For once, we're not
- 1:46Speaker 1: just exporting value on a wire or a pipeline. We
- 1:49Speaker 1: have a chance to keep more of it here, more
- 1:52Speaker 1: of the value here. That opportunity is real, but only
- 1:56Speaker 1: if it's done right, with safeguards, with transparency, with public input.
- 2:01Speaker 1: The responsibility now falls on our leaders to get it right,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and on all of us to separate fact from fear,
- 2:09Speaker 1: because history has shown us progress is coming either way.
- 2:12Speaker 1: The only question is will we shape it or watch
- 2:15Speaker 1: it pass us by
