- 0:01When we are confronted with difficulties, we employ several
- 0:05different types of responses, mainly depending on instinct,
- 0:09habit, training and the play of the three gunas, the qualities
- 0:14of nature, satwa, rajas and tamas.
- 0:18Sometimes we respond with more effort, sometimes we lapse into
- 0:23depression, and sometimes we take a longer range view and
- 0:27accept the process and the necessary time.
- 0:32It is a very frequent occurrence for spiritual seekers.
- 0:36They have an opening and get what are called experiences of a
- 0:40new consciousness. It could be a lifting up of the
- 0:44awareness above the head. It could be the descent of a
- 0:48force into the being. It could be an opening of the
- 0:52psychic being with an accession of aspiration, devotion,
- 0:57consecration, or it could be any number of what are called
- 1:01psychic experiences that shift the mind out of its narrow range
- 1:06and limited ways of seeing and thinking.
- 1:10There are countless types of these experiences beyond the few
- 1:13examples provided here. The seeker comes to embrace the
- 1:17process, feels the enthusiasm and encouragement that these
- 1:21experiences provide, and redoubles his dedication to the
- 1:25path. Then there comes a time when all
- 1:29of the experiences recede into the past, and the seeker has
- 1:34what is known as a sense of dryness, a sense of absence, a
- 1:38sense of darkness. As the work of the sadhna takes
- 1:42place in the being, old thoughts, habits, responses,
- 1:48reactions, feelings and impressions may come flooding
- 1:53into the being as the force systematically touches all the
- 1:57hidden, locked up cellular memories and patterns, brings
- 2:01them forward in order to expose them and eventually change them.
- 2:07Many seekers feel like they have somehow lost touch with the
- 2:10spiritual force that they experienced and they lapse in
- 2:14many instances into a depth of despair or depression, a sense
- 2:20of failure and uselessness of the effort.
- 2:24The dark night of the soul is a well known and described
- 2:28phenomenon. This becomes something of a
- 2:32tipping point for seekers. They sometimes get discouraged
- 2:36and abandoned. The course in some instances
- 2:39take up the external life fully and try to forget the experience
- 2:44and the aspiration that they were responding to.
- 2:47Eventually, if they are truly ready and called to the quest,
- 2:52they will suffer setbacks, disillusionment, and a feeling
- 2:56of uselessness in the pursuit of power, wealth, sex, enjoyment of
- 3:02various sorts in the outer world, will feel the emptiness
- 3:06of wasted time, dissipation, or the stupefying effects of
- 3:11alcohol, drugs, tobacco, et cetera.
- 3:16At that point, they may return to the quest.
- 3:21If this does not occur in this lifetime, then in the next.
- 3:25Sri Krishna in the Bhagwad Gita assures Arjuna that no effort
- 3:30toward realization and spiritual growth is ever truly wasted or
- 3:35lost. Many, however, continue on.
- 3:40They recognize, in some cases the need for patience,
- 3:44persistence, and perseverance. They observe the changes and
- 3:49fluctuations and treat them as part of the process and use them
- 3:54to work on the needed transformation of the body,
- 3:58life, energy and mind that can bring the spiritual change
- 4:02through them and into their external actions.
- 4:06Some live purely on faith, having had the experiences.
- 4:12They know there is a reality to the spiritual life and they
- 4:16simply abandoned their egoistic desire for individual attainment
- 4:20to accept the time, place and circumstances that the Divine
- 4:26places before them. Srioro Bindu observes quote.
- 4:32There is always something that either carries us on or forces
- 4:36us on. This may take the shape of
- 4:39something conscious in front, the shape of a mastering
- 4:42spiritual idea, indestructible aspiration, or fixed faith,
- 4:47which may seem sometimes entirely veiled or even
- 4:51destroyed in periods of darkness or violent upheaval.
- 4:56But always they reappear when the storm has passed or the
- 5:00blackness of night has thinned and reassert their influence.
- 5:06But also it may be something in the very essence of the being,
- 5:09deeper than any idea or will in the mind, deeper and more
- 5:13permanent than the heart's aspiration, but hidden from
- 5:18one's own observation. One who is moved to yoga by some
- 5:22curiosity of the mind, or even by its desire for knowledge, can
- 5:27turn aside from the path from disappointment or any other
- 5:31cause. Still more can those who take it
- 5:34up from some inner ambition or vital desire turn away through
- 5:39revolt or frustration or the despondency of frequent check
- 5:43and failure. But if this deeper thing is
- 5:47there, then one cannot permanently leave the path of
- 5:51spiritual endeavour. One may decide to leave the path
- 5:55but is not allowed from within to do it, or one may leave but
- 6:00is obliged to return to it by the secret spiritual need within
- 6:05Him. All these things are common to
- 6:08every path of yoga. They are the normal
- 6:12difficulties, fluctuations and struggles which come across the
- 6:17path of spiritual effort. End Quote.
