- 1:28Speaker 1: misunderstood i'm your host rachel you could tell i am
- 1:31Speaker 1: so excited to have my next guest here i've heard
- 1:34Speaker 1: about her for so long and her story is something
- 1:37Speaker 1: that i'm sure all of us have heard before tara
- 1:40Speaker 1: newell is the former stepdaughter of con artist john mehan
- 1:43Speaker 1: the subject of the hugely popular podcast turned documentary turned
- 1:47Speaker 1: bravo tv show dirty john For years, John was a
- 1:51Speaker 1: veteran con man, pretending to be a successful doctor so
- 1:53Speaker 1: he could prey on single, middle-aged women and financially and
- 1:57Speaker 1: psychologically abuse them. This is what happened to Tara's mother.
- 2:00Speaker 1: His life ended when he attempted to abduct and stab
- 2:03Speaker 1: my next guest. She fought back and ended up killing
- 2:06Speaker 1: him in self-defense. Tara, I'm so glad you're here to
- 2:09Speaker 1: talk to us about this story.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Thank you. I'm so glad I'm here on this planet.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Well, there was a time when that was, you know,
- 2:18Speaker 1: a question of whether or not you would survive, right?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, no. And really that introduction is really eye-opening because
- 2:25Speaker 2: it puts reality in my mind and I almost lost
- 2:30Speaker 2: my life. And, you know, I'm so happy to be
- 2:33Speaker 2: here because of that certain situation.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Right. So before we get into all the details of
- 2:40Speaker 1: that and what people may or may not already do know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: talk to me about your childhood, where you came from,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and how you got to the point you got to.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So where are you actually from?
- 2:49Speaker 2: I am from Orange County, California. My parents had a house. Well,
- 2:55Speaker 2: they first got a house together in Orange Park Acres.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It was a really big property. Our next-door neighbor was...
- 3:05Speaker 2: someone that was a Rams linebacker or defender. I don't
- 3:10Speaker 2: know the players on the football team, but he was
- 3:13Speaker 2: a player for the Rams. And so we grew up
- 3:17Speaker 2: in kind of this lavish lifestyle, this Orange County lifestyle.
- 3:22Speaker 2: So Orange County is a bit conservative as well, Christian.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And my mom and dad, their relationship was a bit
- 3:33Speaker 2: toxic in the sense that they fought a lot. I
- 3:37Speaker 2: don't think healthy communication was really talked about as it
- 3:43Speaker 2: is now. And so I don't think that they really
- 3:47Speaker 2: were able to communicate with each other. And my father
- 3:50Speaker 2: had also struggled with, you know, everyone in the family
- 3:54Speaker 2: kind of struggled with like some things here and there.
- 3:57Speaker 2: So I, It was a childhood where I ended up
- 4:04Speaker 2: having a lot of nannies because my parents were hard
- 4:07Speaker 2: workers and they both had established careers. And then my
- 4:14Speaker 2: sister and I were kind of like the second round
- 4:18Speaker 2: of children, if that makes sense. So my mom had
- 4:22Speaker 2: a daughter and a son in a previous marriage. And
- 4:26Speaker 2: then my dad had a daughter in a previous marriage.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So we were like the second round of kids. And
- 4:34Speaker 2: those kids are always not as looked after, if that
- 4:39Speaker 2: makes sense. You know, where we had nannies, my mom's
- 4:44Speaker 2: kind of just like, okay, I've done this so many
- 4:46Speaker 2: times before. I kind of know what I'm doing now,
- 4:51Speaker 2: but like, let's just throw the stuff in the car
- 4:53Speaker 2: and get going. You know what I mean? Where everything
- 4:55Speaker 2: before was like, okay, here's your lunchbox. Here's this. Everything's labeled.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You know, that's what my sister and brother grew up with.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And then I grew up with just like, okay, here's
- 5:07Speaker 2: the lunch money. We have nannies coming to pick you up.
- 5:10Speaker 2: We're working, you know. And of course, my mom loved
- 5:14Speaker 2: us the same and my father loved us the same,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but it's just a different childhood.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Of course, yeah. So your parents divorced at some point?
- 5:22Speaker 1: How old were you when that happened?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Seven years old when they got a divorce. My mom
- 5:28Speaker 2: came in the room and she told me that my
- 5:30Speaker 2: father and her were no longer going to be together.
- 5:33Speaker 2: And I actually told her that that was okay because
- 5:37Speaker 2: I didn't like them fighting. And my sister... was upset
- 5:42Speaker 2: about it, but I was actually okay with the divorce.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And after the divorce, did you end up staying with
- 5:48Speaker 1: your mother and your sister?
- 5:49Speaker 2: So my mom had partial custody with my dad. However,
- 5:55Speaker 2: he had us every other weekend in I think like
- 5:59Speaker 2: two days a week here and there.
- 6:01Speaker 1: So talk to me about your relationship. Your sister's name
- 6:04Speaker 1: is Jacqueline, right? So your and Jacqueline's relationship with your
- 6:08Speaker 1: mom as you got a little bit older and into
- 6:10Speaker 1: her newly dating relationships. How did that, how was that?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Well, my mom always wanted my sister and I to
- 6:18Speaker 2: have a father. And she saw that the divorce was
- 6:23Speaker 2: a lot for my father to go through. So, I mean,
- 6:26Speaker 2: he wasn't as around as much as we would like
- 6:29Speaker 2: him to be. And my mom, and he was there
- 6:33Speaker 2: for us, but he wasn't there like every single day,
- 6:36Speaker 2: you know. And my mom really wanted us to have
- 6:39Speaker 2: a father figure in our life that was there every
- 6:42Speaker 2: single day. And she wanted this marriage as well. So
- 6:47Speaker 2: she kept going and looking for the perfect guy. However,
- 6:51Speaker 2: she didn't have the greatest picker. And she ended up
- 6:56Speaker 2: marrying this guy who was the dentist. Then he ended
- 7:00Speaker 2: up stalking her and ended up taking her to court,
- 7:05Speaker 2: getting alimony from her. She ended up having to pay
- 7:09Speaker 2: him $ 3 million. Wow.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And this is before John?
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Came into the picture this.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Was before john and it's crazy because i this guy
- 7:20Speaker 2: like i hated him he stalked my mom he would
- 7:23Speaker 2: go to her store and just watch her from the
- 7:27Speaker 2: car and so that's what i grew up thinking like
- 7:31Speaker 2: that's is that normal you know and then they ended
- 7:36Speaker 2: up going to court and He ended up taking her
- 7:40Speaker 2: to the cleaners. And then we actually lost our house
- 7:45Speaker 2: because of him.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah. And then my mom married this other guy, Peter.
- 7:51Speaker 2: And he tried to help us save our house. Unfortunately,
- 7:58Speaker 2: it was too much that my mom had to pay
- 8:00Speaker 2: this guy.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Wow.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And Peter was great, but he was a hockey player
- 8:06Speaker 2: with an anger problem.
- 8:08Speaker 1: With an anger problem?
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Why did that come out on you guys or on
- 8:12Speaker 1: your mom?
- 8:13Speaker 2: Like one day he decided this one guy cut him off.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It was Christmas. And he decided to go key this
- 8:22Speaker 2: guy's car because he was so upset. And like we're
- 8:27Speaker 2: in high school watching this happen. Like, oh. And then
- 8:31Speaker 2: he actually ended up getting in trouble from the grocery place.
- 8:35Speaker 2: And they all knew him there because he would go
- 8:37Speaker 2: there like three times a week. And so they were like, Peter,
- 8:42Speaker 2: you kind of can't do that. And so he had
- 8:45Speaker 2: to like pay for it. It was this whole big ordeal.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And then he just, he would get mad about certain
- 8:52Speaker 2: things my sister and I would do. He didn't have
- 8:55Speaker 2: any children. So he wasn't used to children. And then
- 8:58Speaker 2: he came into teenagers. So....
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that's hard. Okay, so you've set this up where
- 9:06Speaker 1: your mom doesn't have the best picker, which I understand
- 9:09Speaker 1: not a lot of us do that can, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: cause a lot of problems. You know, as you're trying
- 9:14Speaker 1: to figure out your life and who you want to
- 9:16Speaker 1: be with. And also when you have kids, I mean,
- 9:18Speaker 1: I'm a single mom. And I also am a recovering
- 9:23Speaker 1: love addict, let's say. I definitely want to be in
- 9:25Speaker 1: love and find the right person, but it's really hard
- 9:27Speaker 1: when you're not good at seeing those red flags. And
- 9:32Speaker 1: it sounds like your mom didn't come into this relationship
- 9:35Speaker 1: with John Meehan knowing how to spot red flags going
- 9:39Speaker 1: into it, right?
- 9:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:40Speaker 2: A hundred percent. She was an empath. She was taught
- 9:43Speaker 2: to be a people pleaser. She didn't know what to
- 9:46Speaker 2: look for, and red flags to her were normal. You know,
- 9:50Speaker 2: her nervous system was used to these red flags. And
- 9:53Speaker 2: no one has taught her differently other than these failed
- 9:56Speaker 2: marriages and these failed relationships, but... when toxic relationships, communication,
- 10:03Speaker 2: love bombing, trauma bonding, all of that is not talked about,
- 10:08Speaker 2: how are people supposed to know what's going on? Right.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And that feels so good to the person that's just
- 10:13Speaker 1: aching to be loved and aching for a family. So
- 10:16Speaker 1: I think it was really easy for her to fall
- 10:19Speaker 1: for someone like John when he came around because also
- 10:23Speaker 1: he didn't look like a monster. He looked like, you know,
- 10:25Speaker 1: a doctor out of Grey's Anatomy, right? I mean, he
- 10:28Speaker 1: was very good looking. He obviously had the social skills
- 10:31Speaker 1: to kind of.
- 10:32Speaker 3: The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going
- 10:35Speaker 3: for it?
- 10:35Speaker 4: This exclusive place that Dada's connections with. They have more
- 10:39Speaker 4: cars for more dealerships than like anywhere else.
- 10:41Speaker 3: You have to put me in touch. What's it called?
- 10:43Speaker 4: It's Dune ADL.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Where?
- 10:45Speaker 3: Dune ADL.
- 10:48Speaker 4: There's an accent on the E.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Do you mean?
- 10:51Speaker 4: Yes, I got it on Done Deal Cars.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Lift, please. You're going past Kimmage? Oh, Kimmage.
- 10:57Speaker 1: No.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Done Deal Cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Sweep her off her feet. And she was, you know,
- 11:05Speaker 1: not only an easy target, but he kind of would
- 11:07Speaker 1: have made anyone maybe an easy target because of, you know,
- 11:11Speaker 1: how he looked and how he did not look the
- 11:13Speaker 1: part of a sociopath.
- 11:15Speaker 2: A hundred percent. And it's kind of crazy because I've
- 11:20Speaker 2: talked to so many people that he's dated before, been with,
- 11:24Speaker 2: just because of the show and everything. And he has
- 11:29Speaker 2: a range of different women. Women he did drugs with,
- 11:33Speaker 2: women he was like a quote unquote perfect boyfriend to.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Like he played a different role for all these women. Right.
- 11:42Speaker 1: So he was like a chameleon depending on who the
- 11:44Speaker 1: woman was. So let's get into how your mom met John.
- 11:47Speaker 1: She met him online, right?
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yes. She met him on our time. Okay.
- 11:51Speaker 1: What's that?
- 11:52Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Is that like match?
- 11:54Speaker 2: It's a senior dating website.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Oh my goodness.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Okay.
- 11:58Speaker 2: For like 55 plus. Yeah.
- 11:59Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:00Speaker 1: And had she gone out on any other dates with
- 12:01Speaker 1: anyone else before meeting John?
- 12:04Speaker 2: She went out with a couple of guys. I think
- 12:07Speaker 2: she went to the Laker game with this one guy.
- 12:10Speaker 2: This one guy seemed pretty nice. He had like a
- 12:13Speaker 2: car shop. But there was no spark with him. And
- 12:19Speaker 2: then she actually went on another date that was terrible
- 12:23Speaker 2: where the guy ended up getting wasted, grabbed a champagne bottle,
- 12:28Speaker 2: walked alongside the beach with her. And so that was
- 12:31Speaker 2: also like her last date. that she went on and
- 12:35Speaker 2: she was like oh this guy tried to like rape
- 12:37Speaker 2: me this guy tried to grope me on the beach
- 12:40Speaker 2: and she just like left and she walked home I
- 12:43Speaker 2: think she walked like five miles or something it was
- 12:47Speaker 2: ridiculous Yeah, so that was her last date before John.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And then John is, you know, smoothing and doing all
- 12:58Speaker 2: these things. He's looking suave. He is a doctor. He's
- 13:02Speaker 2: sounding so good. So good. And then she goes on
- 13:06Speaker 2: this date with him. He comes back. He gets extra
- 13:10Speaker 2: comfortable on her bed. That makes her uncomfortable. But and
- 13:14Speaker 2: he leaves upset, which is funny. But then he calls
- 13:17Speaker 2: and he apologizes. Right. And, you know, my mom's a
- 13:21Speaker 2: forgiving person. And my mom, like her mom, quote unquote,
- 13:25Speaker 2: forgave her daughter's killer. So my mom is used to forgiveness. Yeah.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And so. For someone asking for forgiveness, she's going to
- 13:36Speaker 2: forgive that person because she's going to think it's genuine.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Unlike a con artist who's, you know, doing it just
- 13:42Speaker 2: to gain control of someone. Right.
- 13:45Speaker 1: So now set up the scene of like how long
- 13:48Speaker 1: it takes for John to sort of weasel his way
- 13:50Speaker 1: into your mom's house and all of that stuff.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I was living in Vegas at the time and I
- 13:56Speaker 2: was just in communication with my sister, Jacqueline. And Jacqueline
- 14:00Speaker 2: was like, this guy is staying here all the time.
- 14:03Speaker 2: This guy is just, you know, looking up and down.
- 14:07Speaker 2: I don't like him, Tara. There's something about him. And
- 14:11Speaker 2: so she was creating a lot of issues with him.
- 14:14Speaker 2: And this was, I want to say, like, a week
- 14:18Speaker 2: or two weeks into the relationship, things started to get, like, heavy.
- 14:23Speaker 2: And then go on heavy because, you know, these relationships
- 14:29Speaker 2: are codependent, like with the narcissist and the empath. And
- 14:33Speaker 2: so they get entangled and they want to be around
- 14:36Speaker 2: each other all the time because one of their energy
- 14:39Speaker 2: has the non-empathy and then the other energy has like
- 14:44Speaker 2: the over emotions and the empathy. So they get into
- 14:48Speaker 2: this relationship, they get codependent. And two months into the relationship,
- 14:54Speaker 2: my sister is just not having it, throwing fits because
- 14:58Speaker 2: she lives with my mom. And so my mom ends
- 15:02Speaker 2: up getting another place on Balboa Island, a house, and
- 15:07Speaker 2: she moves in there and he moves in with her,
- 15:11Speaker 2: whether she knows it or not.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Right. So and Jacqueline stayed at the first house. Is
- 15:16Speaker 1: that what happened by yourself?
- 15:18Speaker 2: Yeah, she stayed at the penthouse. Yeah, by herself. And
- 15:21Speaker 2: then later, John would try to get her kicked out
- 15:25Speaker 2: of there by taking pictures of her balcony from the roof,
- 15:31Speaker 2: making lots of complaints to the office. So he didn't
- 15:35Speaker 2: like my sister.
- 15:37Speaker 1: So when did you first meet him?
- 15:39Speaker 2: I met him two months into the relationship, like probably
- 15:43Speaker 2: a little before two months. And that's when they moved
- 15:45Speaker 2: into the Balboa place. I came over from Vegas with
- 15:50Speaker 2: my boyfriend at the time and our three dogs. We
- 15:53Speaker 2: were excited for him to have a place to stay
- 15:56Speaker 2: where we could bring our dogs. And I met him
- 15:59Speaker 2: and he was just kind of putting a mattress on
- 16:03Speaker 2: top of the van. And then my boyfriend at the
- 16:06Speaker 2: time went over to help him and he just didn't
- 16:09Speaker 2: want help from him. Um, which Jimmy did have, uh,
- 16:15Speaker 2: a cast at the time. So I guess maybe that
- 16:19Speaker 2: wasn't helpful, but you still offer, you still accept help
- 16:24Speaker 2: from someone when it's offered to you. And John was
- 16:28Speaker 2: just kind of cold at first. And we were like, okay,
- 16:32Speaker 2: I guess I think that's my mom's boyfriend. And then
- 16:35Speaker 2: my mom got down and then she introduced us and
- 16:39Speaker 2: he just wasn't very warm to us.
- 16:41Speaker 1: How long did it take you to have some red
- 16:43Speaker 1: flags or was it immediate besides that interaction?
- 16:47Speaker 2: It was probably pretty immediate because we went back to
- 16:52Speaker 2: the new place and we brought that truck over. We
- 16:55Speaker 2: unloaded it. There wasn't much interaction. Then we kind of
- 17:01Speaker 2: get settled for a minute and then there's margaritas happening.
- 17:05Speaker 2: I'm asking him questions and all the questions that he's
- 17:10Speaker 2: answering are kind of just like close-ended. Like I would
- 17:14Speaker 2: ask him like, Oh, what's your name? Sean.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Okay. That's it.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Oh, what does your, like, what's your daughter's name? Like,
- 17:20Speaker 2: what do your daughters do? Oh, Emily. And like, she
- 17:24Speaker 2: goes to military school. Okay. That's it.
- 17:26Speaker 1: You know, there wasn't a lot of chemistry. He wasn't
- 17:29Speaker 1: talkative with you.
- 17:30Speaker 2: And he wasn't wanting to engage with me because he
- 17:34Speaker 2: wasn't wanting to give me more information and he was
- 17:38Speaker 2: wanting to also isolate me. He already isolated Jacqueline from
- 17:44Speaker 2: my mom. And now it's my turn. You know, I'm
- 17:47Speaker 2: the good girl. I'm the easygoing child. I'm the one that,
- 17:53Speaker 2: you know, is really going to be the one that
- 17:57Speaker 2: he needs to get rid of because I'm going to
- 17:59Speaker 2: be the one that's reasonable. I'm not going to make
- 18:03Speaker 2: fights with anything. And it's crazy because like there was
- 18:08Speaker 2: red flags on that first trip. where he locked the
- 18:11Speaker 2: doors where, well, the child lock was on for the
- 18:14Speaker 2: door and I tried to get out and I couldn't
- 18:17Speaker 2: get out of the car. And I asked him to
- 18:18Speaker 2: let me out with my other friends in the back
- 18:22Speaker 2: and he wouldn't let us out. And he went upstairs
- 18:25Speaker 2: and then I had to text my mom and call
- 18:27Speaker 2: my mom to come down and let us out of
- 18:29Speaker 2: the car.
- 18:30Speaker 1: That's insane. Why wouldn't he let you out of the car?
- 18:32Speaker 1: Did he act like it was a mistake?
- 18:34Speaker 2: I think he was acting like he couldn't hear us,
- 18:38Speaker 2: which it was funny because I repeated myself and I
- 18:41Speaker 2: repeated myself even louder, but I am soft spoken in
- 18:45Speaker 2: a sense. So I was like, okay, maybe he really
- 18:47Speaker 2: didn't hear me. And, but I was like, that was weird.
- 18:51Speaker 2: And then when I came back where we went and
- 18:54Speaker 2: we left and we went back to Vegas and came
- 18:57Speaker 2: back the next week for Thanksgiving and I started to
- 19:01Speaker 2: have a lot more questions about him. Like, why is
- 19:04Speaker 2: he using my mom's car? Where's his car? You know,
- 19:08Speaker 2: if he's a doctor, like, where's his stuff? Why is
- 19:11Speaker 2: he living here? Like, isn't he wealthy?
- 19:15Speaker 1: Right. Yeah. So did you finally question your mom and
- 19:20Speaker 1: bring this up to her?
- 19:21Speaker 2: Yes. And also my mom's hairdresser who does all of
- 19:26Speaker 2: our hair was starting to have questions about it as
- 19:29Speaker 2: well because he came in and got a haircut from her.
- 19:32Speaker 2: And so things were just weird. Everyone was having questions.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Even my mom's old assistant was having questions. Everyone was
- 19:42Speaker 2: just like, who's this guy? He's weird. Something's up with him.
- 19:47Speaker 2: And when I had those questions, that's when I confronted
- 19:52Speaker 2: my mom. And then he came up behind my mom
- 19:55Speaker 2: and then started screaming at me. And then told me
- 19:58Speaker 2: that I wanted my mom to myself. That I don't
- 20:03Speaker 2: want to see my mom happy. That I want my
- 20:06Speaker 2: mom's money. And I... screamed back some FUs at him.
- 20:10Speaker 2: And I said, no, John, that's what you want. Wow.
- 20:15Speaker 1: So that must have been really emotional and tough for you.
- 20:19Speaker 1: So your mom at this point had to choose between
- 20:22Speaker 1: John and you and your sister, right?
- 20:24Speaker 3: Yes.
- 20:25Speaker 2: And it was unfortunate because I was staying with her.
- 20:29Speaker 2: And so I had to pack all my things. She
- 20:32Speaker 2: didn't stop me. I took all my.
- 20:36Speaker 3: The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going
- 20:39Speaker 3: for it?
- 20:39Speaker 4: This exclusive place that Dad has connections with. They have
- 20:42Speaker 4: more cars for more dealerships than, like, anywhere else.
- 20:45Speaker 3: You have to put me in touch. What's it called?
- 20:47Speaker 4: It's Dunaidial.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Where?
- 20:51Speaker 3: Dunaidial.
- 20:52Speaker 4: There's an accent on the E.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Do you mean.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Yes, I got it on Dundale Cars. Lift?
- 20:58Speaker 2: Please.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Are you going past Kimmage?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Oh, Kimmage!
- 21:01Speaker 3: No.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Dundale Cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Stuff. And I left and I had to go to
- 21:08Speaker 2: my sister's, which they don't allow dogs there. I had
- 21:11Speaker 2: to sneak up the dogs. So it was this whole
- 21:13Speaker 2: big words deal. And the next day was Thanksgiving, which
- 21:17Speaker 2: I did all this grocery shopping for Thanksgiving. And then
- 21:21Speaker 2: I was disinvited to Thanksgiving the next day. And he
- 21:25Speaker 2: was there, even though she's only known him for two months. Right.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Oh, gosh, that's so upsetting. I'm so sorry. So Soon after,
- 21:34Speaker 1: they end up going to Vegas and getting married, right?
- 21:37Speaker 1: Or had they already been married and you didn't know?
- 21:39Speaker 2: No, soon after. I believe it was right before Christmas
- 21:44Speaker 2: and right after our fight, actually.
- 21:46Speaker 1: And so how did you find out that they were married?
- 21:48Speaker 1: Because they didn't tell you, right? They didn't tell anybody?
- 21:50Speaker 2: We didn't find out until like a while later, until
- 21:55Speaker 2: we were doing all the investigation and Until we found
- 21:59Speaker 2: like paperwork or something saying they were married. Or maybe
- 22:02Speaker 2: my mom told us one day, but we were trying
- 22:05Speaker 2: to get her away from him. And we didn't know
- 22:08Speaker 2: she was married to him.
- 22:10Speaker 1: And how did she react when you confronted her and
- 22:13Speaker 1: told her you guys were, you knew she was married
- 22:15Speaker 1: and you still were not a fan and all of that?
- 22:18Speaker 2: To be honest, I don't think we even brought that
- 22:21Speaker 2: to her for a while. I think we kept that
- 22:23Speaker 2: to ourselves because we were just in shock. We were like,
- 22:27Speaker 2: oh my gosh, she's married to him now. And I
- 22:30Speaker 2: don't think we were having too much communication with my mom.
- 22:34Speaker 2: It was like I would go see her for lunch,
- 22:38Speaker 2: only lunch, because she wasn't allowed to go do dinner
- 22:41Speaker 2: with me because she had to be back for dinner
- 22:43Speaker 2: with John. And I would only see her certain times.
- 22:49Speaker 2: So there was very limited communication. And I think that's
- 22:53Speaker 2: why we didn't bring it up to her because... We
- 22:56Speaker 2: didn't want her to know that we knew more than
- 22:59Speaker 2: we did.
- 23:00Speaker 1: And at this point, did you know that he was
- 23:03Speaker 1: a drug addict? Did you know that drugs were even
- 23:04Speaker 1: involved in this?
- 23:06Speaker 2: When we hired the private investigator, he found out a
- 23:09Speaker 2: lot of stuff about John. And that was when we
- 23:12Speaker 2: knew that he had different like felonies and stuff that
- 23:18Speaker 2: he was in jail for selling drugs. And so we
- 23:22Speaker 2: didn't know that, but it was kind of like you
- 23:27Speaker 2: got to let some of that fear and stuff go
- 23:31Speaker 2: because your mom's in it and you can't let your
- 23:34Speaker 2: mind go to the worst place. You just have to
- 23:36Speaker 2: kind of prepare and know as much as you can,
- 23:39Speaker 2: but not show your cards. Right.
- 23:42Speaker 1: So were you guys making this play to figure out
- 23:45Speaker 1: how to get rid of him or were you guys
- 23:46Speaker 1: just letting it play out and hoping your mom was
- 23:49Speaker 1: in a relationship that was going to work? Like at
- 23:51Speaker 1: what point did you know that this was dangerous and
- 23:53Speaker 1: something had to be done?
- 23:54Speaker 2: We knew it was dangerous when the private investigator found
- 23:58Speaker 2: out all the stuff. And then there was different restraining
- 24:01Speaker 2: orders on him from even his sister. Like there was
- 24:06Speaker 2: all these, he had a rap sheet, you know? So
- 24:10Speaker 2: we knew all this and it was kind of like,
- 24:13Speaker 2: I hope she figures this out. We did bring it
- 24:15Speaker 2: to her attention, but then, and she did leave him,
- 24:19Speaker 2: but then he was able to bring her to different
- 24:21Speaker 2: lawyers and they told her But a lot of the
- 24:25Speaker 2: stuff we found were not true. So he had lawyers
- 24:28Speaker 2: in his pocket as well.
- 24:30Speaker 1: That continued to lie to her.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Yeah. So when lawyers are telling me this and when
- 24:36Speaker 2: he brings other people that are, you know, going against
- 24:40Speaker 2: what the private eye said and what we are saying,
- 24:43Speaker 2: she's going to choose him because her heartstrings are attached
- 24:47Speaker 2: to him. And we're kids, but we're grown up, you know? Right.
- 24:52Speaker 2: And so she doesn't need to nurture us and be
- 24:55Speaker 2: there for us like she was. So it makes it
- 24:59Speaker 2: easier to choose him over us, if that makes sense,
- 25:03Speaker 2: because we're not every day in her life and he's
- 25:07Speaker 2: there every day and doting on her and, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 2: giving her different feelings than we give her.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Right. Of course. So at some point, Jacqueline actually tracked
- 25:16Speaker 1: his car.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:18Speaker 1: And you guys started following him and really getting involved
- 25:21Speaker 1: in this. like crime junkie investigation on him. Correct. Tell
- 25:25Speaker 1: me all about that.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Yeah. So my sister ended up going to the spyware
- 25:29Speaker 2: shop in Costa Mesa and ended up getting some stuff.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Then she took a tracker. I would go have lunch
- 25:36Speaker 2: with my mom. I would tell my sister where we're at.
- 25:40Speaker 2: And then my sister would go put it on the car,
- 25:42Speaker 2: not even see my mom or me, but she would
- 25:44Speaker 2: go show up to the location and go put it
- 25:46Speaker 2: on her car. And then she would go like take
- 25:49Speaker 2: it in and off her car. So that she didn't
- 25:53Speaker 2: quite know. And we were like, you also have to
- 25:56Speaker 2: like recharge it or something. So I would just go
- 26:00Speaker 2: to lunch and be like, okay, I'm going to lunch
- 26:02Speaker 2: with mom here. She would go take the tracker off
- 26:05Speaker 2: the car and on the car.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Wow. That's amazing.
- 26:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 26:08Speaker 1: So what point did this come to a head?
- 26:11Speaker 2: I feel like this was maybe six months or like
- 26:15Speaker 2: four months, six months into the relationship.
- 26:18Speaker 1: After they were married?
- 26:19Speaker 2: Yes. Okay. Okay.
- 26:20Speaker 1: And did something happen that finally made your mother see
- 26:23Speaker 1: the light? I mean, I know it's one thing when
- 26:25Speaker 1: you're so blinded by love, it's really hard to see
- 26:28Speaker 1: those red flags. So I can see how she was
- 26:31Speaker 1: going on and on and on on a path. And
- 26:33Speaker 1: you guys kept warning her and she didn't want to
- 26:34Speaker 1: hear any of this, but something must have happened that
- 26:37Speaker 1: finally she was like, okay, this is not the man
- 26:38Speaker 1: I thought I married.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Yeah. And also we're probably yelling it at her where
- 26:43Speaker 2: that makes it harder to hear where, you know, the
- 26:46Speaker 2: inner ear shuts off that when someone's yelling at you.
- 26:51Speaker 1: So she had to see it for herself, right?
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:56Speaker 2: No. And everyone in that situation actually has to see
- 26:59Speaker 2: it for themselves and make that decision for themselves. Because
- 27:04Speaker 2: if people are telling you this guy's a bad guy,
- 27:06Speaker 2: you're not going to leave. You might actually go further
- 27:09Speaker 2: into it and you might say goodbye to that friend
- 27:12Speaker 2: that's telling you that that guy's bad. Right. Exactly. Exactly.
- 27:16Speaker 2: You know, we're telling her this. And at one point
- 27:19Speaker 2: it was like, okay, I had to kind of just say, okay,
- 27:24Speaker 2: I'm willing to work with stuff with John. And he
- 27:26Speaker 2: never wanted to work with me. And so I was
- 27:31Speaker 2: the one being like, okay, I'm willing to work. I'm
- 27:34Speaker 2: willing to talk. I'm willing to do stuff about this.
- 27:37Speaker 2: And he was never willing to do it. So in
- 27:40Speaker 2: my mom's eyes, like, why wouldn't he be willing to
- 27:44Speaker 2: talk to my daughter? And I just started just become
- 27:48Speaker 2: like the narcissist dream in a sense, just like people
- 27:53Speaker 2: pleasing to her, just like, okay, yeah, I would love
- 27:57Speaker 2: to meet him. I would love to do this. Why
- 28:00Speaker 2: can't he have a conversation with me? Oh, that makes
- 28:04Speaker 2: me bummed. Just being like that. Right.
- 28:07Speaker 1: So you changed your tactic. Instead of yelling all these
- 28:10Speaker 1: facts at her, you decided to go along with her
- 28:13Speaker 1: and try and be the good daughter and act like
- 28:16Speaker 1: it was just hurting you instead. And you wanted to
- 28:19Speaker 1: be part of his life. That's so smart. Yeah.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:22Speaker 2: And then he ended up getting a dog, moving to
- 28:24Speaker 2: Vegas with her. They ended up getting another apartment together.
- 28:28Speaker 2: And it's just crazy because I'm forever the person being like, okay, okay.
- 28:37Speaker 2: And then he's not going to be able to isolate me. Mm-hmm.
- 28:42Speaker 2: And so I'm able to stay in the picture and
- 28:45Speaker 2: able to get lunch with her and able to gain
- 28:48Speaker 2: her trust and have that person, you know. And then
- 28:52Speaker 2: also my mom, her kids, my brother and sister, were
- 28:57Speaker 2: not letting her see her grandchildren at a certain point
- 29:00Speaker 2: because she would bring them around John. And John was dangerous. Yeah.
- 29:05Speaker 2: And like the other day, my niece shared with us
- 29:08Speaker 2: that we kind of knew this and we didn't know this, but...
- 29:12Speaker 2: I didn't hear this story. I heard this story in
- 29:15Speaker 2: a different view, if that makes sense. He shared with
- 29:20Speaker 2: my niece, who was eight at the time, what the
- 29:23Speaker 2: birds and the bees were. And then he also, I guess,
- 29:26Speaker 2: showed her twerking videos and then also asked if she
- 29:30Speaker 2: could twerk. And for me, just being in the true
- 29:35Speaker 2: crime world too, like I'm going through so many grooming
- 29:39Speaker 2: books and perpetrators. And I was like, wow, that's grooming,
- 29:45Speaker 2: you know, asking a child to watch something inappropriate, asking
- 29:49Speaker 2: them about sex and then asking them if they could twerk,
- 29:53Speaker 2: that's a hundred percent grooming.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 29:56Speaker 1: So at this point, did you ever contact his children
- 30:01Speaker 1: or his wife or his former girlfriends at this point?
- 30:06Speaker 1: Or did your mom?
- 30:07Speaker 2: My sister did. My sister reached out to Tanya. Tanya
- 30:11Speaker 2: didn't answer at all during this time. We ended up
- 30:16Speaker 2: connecting with Tanya after everything. But my sister reached out
- 30:21Speaker 2: to a lot of people and no one would help us.
- 30:23Speaker 1: So they just didn't want to be involved?
- 30:25Speaker 2: No.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Even though they knew what kind of a guy he was?
- 30:27Speaker 2: Uh-huh. Not until he was gone, taken care of, and
- 30:32Speaker 2: then the story blows up on TV.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Okay, so set us up as to what happened.
- 30:40Speaker 3: The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going
- 30:43Speaker 3: for it?
- 30:44Speaker 4: This exclusive place that Dada's connections with. They have more
- 30:47Speaker 4: cars for more dealerships than like anywhere else.
- 30:49Speaker 3: You have to put me in touch. What's it called?
- 30:51Speaker 4: It's Dune ADL.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Where?
- 30:55Speaker 3: Dunediel.
- 30:56Speaker 4: There's an accent on the E.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Do you mean.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Yes, I got it on Dunediel cars.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Lift?
- 31:02Speaker 3: Please. You going past Kimmage? Oh, Kimmage.
- 31:05Speaker 2: No.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Dunediel cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
- 31:10Speaker 1: The day that you ran into him in that parking lot,
- 31:13Speaker 1: where was the relationship between your mom and your dad?
- 31:16Speaker 1: What did you know? When was the last time you
- 31:19Speaker 1: saw John? Tell us all about that.
- 31:21Speaker 2: During this time, my mom had left John for the
- 31:24Speaker 2: second time. This was the final time. And literally, he
- 31:30Speaker 2: ran his car into a gate. It was in my
- 31:33Speaker 2: mom's name. So she went and got that car. Then
- 31:37Speaker 2: he literally would leave the dog at the house and
- 31:42Speaker 2: then go stalk us. And so the dog would get
- 31:45Speaker 2: out and then the dog ended up in the pound.
- 31:48Speaker 2: And so we waited a few days for him to
- 31:50Speaker 2: get the dog and then we ended up getting the dog.
- 31:54Speaker 2: And then I had his dog. So I was just
- 31:59Speaker 2: working and he was just kind of going on a
- 32:03Speaker 2: downward spiral.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And he was texting your mom and he was pretty
- 32:08Speaker 1: angry at this point, right?
- 32:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, he would text her stuff. I'm like saying
- 32:14Speaker 2: threatening things. I'm not 100% sure. I feel like I
- 32:18Speaker 2: probably blocked those words out of my memory. But he
- 32:23Speaker 2: would text her threatening stuff. He tried to send me
- 32:27Speaker 2: messages as well. But on my Facebook, I had them
- 32:31Speaker 2: all blocked. And I actually didn't see them until after everything.
- 32:37Speaker 2: And so he was in like a downward spiral, not
- 32:42Speaker 2: doing okay. He was coming here and stalking us when
- 32:47Speaker 2: he had a house in Nevada, Las Vegas. And then
- 32:51Speaker 2: I had his dog. And had you.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Guys gone to the police to let them know that
- 32:56Speaker 1: he was threatening you?
- 32:58Speaker 2: Oh, 100%. They didn't do jack shit, though. They were like, oh, well,
- 33:03Speaker 2: he needs to lay a hand on you. Or you
- 33:07Speaker 2: need three harassment suits against him. And we would literally
- 33:12Speaker 2: show them text messages of him, like, sending us, my sister,
- 33:16Speaker 2: a picture of her birth certificate with spit on it.
- 33:20Speaker 2: And our address. And, like, I don't know. These were
- 33:24Speaker 2: threats that were nonchalant, but the real threats were said to, like,
- 33:28Speaker 2: my mom. Mm-hmm. And so we needed her to, like,
- 33:32Speaker 2: go and be like, okay. But it was... She was
- 33:35Speaker 2: trying to protect herself. And other people told her... Other
- 33:41Speaker 2: professionals told her that she didn't need to protect us
- 33:45Speaker 2: because he wasn't going to do anything to us. Which
- 33:49Speaker 2: is crazy. Right. But sometimes the professionals don't know all,
- 33:54Speaker 2: you know?
- 33:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:55Speaker 3: And so he.
- 33:58Speaker 2: was in California stalking us. And I know this because
- 34:02Speaker 2: a couple days before my attack, he was at the
- 34:06Speaker 2: back bay and he saw me hiking and I met
- 34:08Speaker 2: these people with Rhodesian Ridgebacks. And so the next day
- 34:12Speaker 2: he called and made an appointment to get two Rhodesian
- 34:15Speaker 2: Ridgebacks groomed in a French accent. And I usually get
- 34:20Speaker 2: more information when I get a client calling for dogs,
- 34:23Speaker 2: but it was during feeding time. And so all the
- 34:28Speaker 2: dogs were barking at me and I just needed to
- 34:30Speaker 2: get this guy off the phone. Oh, wow. So, yeah.
- 34:35Speaker 2: So he wanted to know my schedule. And so he
- 34:38Speaker 2: did things to call and get my schedule. But him
- 34:43Speaker 2: making that appointment and then him not showing up that
- 34:47Speaker 2: day actually messed up my schedule.
- 34:49Speaker 1: So were you a dog groomer? What were you doing
- 34:52Speaker 1: at the time?
- 34:53Speaker 2: During the time, I was working at a dog kennel,
- 34:56Speaker 2: boarding and training, and then I was also a dog
- 34:59Speaker 2: groomer at that kennel. And so during my lunch, I
- 35:03Speaker 2: would groom dogs, and then the rest of the time,
- 35:06Speaker 2: I would let the dogs out, feed them, and clean
- 35:09Speaker 2: up after them, do all that great stuff and kennel work.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Got it. So at this point on the day that
- 35:16Speaker 1: you ran into John, were you guys at all in
- 35:18Speaker 1: fear for your life?
- 35:19Speaker 2: 100%. We were on the lookout for him. My sister
- 35:24Speaker 2: actually saw him the day prior. She chased him down
- 35:29Speaker 2: with her friend because she saw him in her parking garage.
- 35:35Speaker 2: And she just like chased him and then he went
- 35:38Speaker 2: off the freeway and then she lost him. And she
- 35:41Speaker 2: warned me that he was around. And then she actually
- 35:44Speaker 2: came to my house to check and make sure I
- 35:47Speaker 2: was okay. But I was asleep. It was probably like 9.30, 10.
- 35:54Speaker 2: And I was already asleep because I had work the
- 35:56Speaker 2: next day at 7 a.m. So I was just preoccupied
- 36:01Speaker 2: too because I had a Jason Aldean concert that I
- 36:04Speaker 2: was going to that night. And so my mind was, okay,
- 36:08Speaker 2: I got to get ready. I got to come back
- 36:11Speaker 2: during this time. I got to, because the concert was
- 36:14Speaker 2: right after work. So I was trying to do everything
- 36:18Speaker 2: to get ready for that concert and figure out my
- 36:21Speaker 2: schedule for that. And then I went to work. My
- 36:24Speaker 2: mom actually picked up his dog for me that day.
- 36:28Speaker 2: And so I only had my dog Cash. And then
- 36:32Speaker 2: I'm at work and the guy doesn't show with the dogs.
- 36:36Speaker 2: So I leave and I go home early, get ready.
- 36:39Speaker 2: And then I come back early so that I'm able
- 36:41Speaker 2: to leave work earlier. Got it.
- 36:43Speaker 1: So at your lunch break, you come back early.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Yes. But then I go back to work early. So
- 36:49Speaker 2: I take a shorter lunch break because I would have
- 36:54Speaker 2: been grooming a dog or two dogs for two hours.
- 36:58Speaker 2: So I have like two extra hours that I didn't
- 37:01Speaker 2: think I would have.
- 37:02Speaker 1: So at this point, you pull into the driveway, right?
- 37:06Speaker 1: And where were you? You were at work or you
- 37:08Speaker 1: were at home when he ran into you?
- 37:10Speaker 2: So I come home from work. I pull into my
- 37:15Speaker 2: parking structure. I see a guy with a tire iron
- 37:20Speaker 2: and my dog is going off on him. And I
- 37:23Speaker 2: tell him to knock it off. I literally pull in
- 37:26Speaker 2: my parking space that I normally park in. However, I
- 37:31Speaker 2: don't have assigned parking. So it's just like I'm a
- 37:34Speaker 2: creature of habit. And then I get out of my
- 37:36Speaker 2: parking or get out of my car. The guy grabs
- 37:39Speaker 2: me by the waist, looks me in the eyes and says,
- 37:42Speaker 2: do you remember me? And that's when I recognized that
- 37:45Speaker 2: it's Sean.
- 37:46Speaker 1: So why wouldn't you have recognized him? Had you not
- 37:48Speaker 1: seen him for a while?
- 37:50Speaker 2: I hadn't seen him since Thanksgiving, the day before Thanksgiving.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Okay. That was my very last interaction with him other
- 37:59Speaker 2: than he did come to my house, but he was
- 38:03Speaker 2: staying in the car. And so I didn't, you know,
- 38:06Speaker 2: I didn't have any interaction with him. It was when
- 38:09Speaker 2: my ex-boyfriend broke up with me. Like my mom was
- 38:13Speaker 2: in Vegas. And so she came to my house and
- 38:16Speaker 2: then he only allowed her to stay with me for
- 38:18Speaker 2: like a couple hours. Wow. Yeah.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Okay, so you get out of the car, and is
- 38:22Speaker 1: your dog with you?
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yes, and I grab my dog out of the backseat.
- 38:27Speaker 2: And so he grabs me by the waist, and that's
- 38:30Speaker 2: when he says, do you remember me? I look him
- 38:32Speaker 2: in the eyes, and I just try to get away
- 38:34Speaker 2: from him. I try to run. I drop my dog's
- 38:38Speaker 2: leash so my dog could try to run away and
- 38:41Speaker 2: be away from this. And then I'm unable to detach
- 38:45Speaker 2: from John. John is grabbing my mouth. I bite him
- 38:49Speaker 2: in the mouth. as hard as I can. So he's
- 38:52Speaker 2: not able to close my mouth or cover my mouth.
- 38:57Speaker 2: And so he really stops with that. And then, wow.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Each time I kind of go through the story, like
- 39:03Speaker 2: some dots connect a little bit more, but this is
- 39:06Speaker 2: when he goes straight to like punching me. So I thought,
- 39:10Speaker 2: but he was really stabbing me in the chest. Wow.
- 39:13Speaker 1: And then I, so he had not only the, the
- 39:18Speaker 1: tire iron, he had a knife.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yes, but the tire iron, I don't know what he
- 39:22Speaker 2: did with it. It's probably, like, on the floor or something.
- 39:26Speaker 2: He had the knife in a dill taco bag. And
- 39:29Speaker 2: so that's why I also thought I was being punched.
- 39:33Speaker 2: But I felt like I was being punched except with
- 39:35Speaker 2: like a searing pain.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 39:40Speaker 2: And then I ended up on my back. My shoulder
- 39:44Speaker 2: hits the floor, scrapes the asphalt really hard. And then
- 39:48Speaker 2: I'm on my back. And then he falls like on
- 39:51Speaker 2: top of me, but he's on his knees. And then
- 39:54Speaker 2: he is trying to, this is when the knife is
- 39:57Speaker 2: out of the Del Taco bag now. And then now
- 40:00Speaker 2: he's trying to stab me. And I just keep on
- 40:03Speaker 2: kicking the knife or kicking his forearms to block the
- 40:07Speaker 2: knife from coming down on me. And then my dog
- 40:10Speaker 2: is attacking his ankles at the same time. And then
- 40:15Speaker 2: I'm actually able to kick the knife out of his forearms.
- 40:19Speaker 2: and it lands on my right-hand side in the ice
- 40:21Speaker 2: pick position. I pick it up, and I just start
- 40:24Speaker 2: wailing on him. I think that I'm stabbing him in
- 40:28Speaker 2: the front, but I'm really overdoing it, and I'm stabbing
- 40:32Speaker 2: him in the back of his shoulder. That's when he gasps,
- 40:36Speaker 2: and he starts to fall down on me, like his
- 40:38Speaker 2: body weight. I hold his head because I watch a
- 40:43Speaker 2: lot of Walking Dead.
- 40:45Speaker 3: The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going
- 40:48Speaker 3: for it?
- 40:49Speaker 4: This exclusive place that Dad has connections with. They have
- 40:51Speaker 4: more cars for more dealerships than, like, anywhere else.
- 40:54Speaker 3: You have to put me in touch. What's it called?
- 40:56Speaker 4: It's Dune-A-D-L.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Where?
- 41:00Speaker 4: Dune-A-D-L. There's an accent on the E.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Do you mean.
- 41:05Speaker 4: Yes, I got it on Done Deal Cars.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Lift? Please.
- 41:07Speaker 3: Are you going past Kimmage? Oh, Kimmage!
- 41:10Speaker 4: No. Done Deal Cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
- 41:15Speaker 2: What? I don't know why I am holding his head
- 41:19Speaker 2: so he won't bite me like a zombie. And then
- 41:23Speaker 2: the last two, I actually stabbed him in the forehead.
- 41:26Speaker 2: And then the last one was in the eye, which
- 41:29Speaker 2: is the softest point of the entry to the brain.
- 41:32Speaker 2: And that was the one I actually did give thought
- 41:35Speaker 2: to because I didn't want him to get back up
- 41:38Speaker 2: in front of me. So I did that one. And
- 41:43Speaker 2: then I pushed his body off of me. And then
- 41:47Speaker 2: I scooted back and then I tossed the knife away.
- 41:51Speaker 2: And then I start just like looking around, assessing the situation.
- 41:55Speaker 2: I see that I have a one inch stab wound
- 41:58Speaker 2: in my forearm. And so I start applying pressure to that.
- 42:02Speaker 2: And then I see my dog starts eating the Del
- 42:05Speaker 2: Taco and the Del Taco bag. I'm worried that that's poison.
- 42:09Speaker 2: And at this time, a A lady, a white lady
- 42:14Speaker 2: and like middle-aged lady in her forties walks up with
- 42:18Speaker 2: her yellow lab, like an English yellow lab. And then he,
- 42:24Speaker 2: she asked me, what can I do to help you?
- 42:27Speaker 2: I see that I'm already covering up the blood and
- 42:29Speaker 2: slowing down the bleeding. So I asked her to grab
- 42:32Speaker 2: my dog. And then she grabs my dog. And then
- 42:35Speaker 2: that's when this guy with dreads came up. He asked
- 42:40Speaker 2: me what's going on. He sees that I'm bleeding. Gives
- 42:43Speaker 2: me his sweater to slow down the bleeding with a
- 42:47Speaker 2: sweater opposed to my arm. And then another girl, Skylar,
- 42:52Speaker 2: the 14-year-old lifeguard comes up. And she's like, I'm Skylar.
- 42:56Speaker 2: I'm trained in this. And then the other guy goes
- 43:00Speaker 2: and gives John CPR. I start freaking out. Because I'm like,
- 43:06Speaker 2: that guy just tried to kill me. He might try
- 43:08Speaker 2: to kill you. Don't do that. And that's when I
- 43:12Speaker 2: walk down the hill. I need to get away from John.
- 43:16Speaker 2: And then Skylar walks me down the hill. And then
- 43:19Speaker 2: I start trying to get my phone. I start calling
- 43:24Speaker 2: my mom. I tell her I'm so sorry. I think
- 43:28Speaker 2: I healed your husband. I knew he would do this.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Because I also had dreams about me stabbing him before
- 43:36Speaker 2: any of this even happened. So I believe that was
- 43:40Speaker 2: like my body's way of preparing me for this attack and,
- 43:44Speaker 2: you know, premonitions and whether God, the universe, whoever gave
- 43:49Speaker 2: that premonition to me to prepare myself for that. I
- 43:53Speaker 2: believe that was a gift. And so I just started
- 43:57Speaker 2: calling my mom, telling her I'm sorry. And then I
- 44:00Speaker 2: called my ex-boyfriend because we were kind of in a limbo,
- 44:05Speaker 2: weird after relationship thing. And then he was the one
- 44:10Speaker 2: that was there and knew who John was. So I
- 44:15Speaker 2: called him. He was working bar rescue. And then he
- 44:20Speaker 2: comes and he flies down to see me for a
- 44:23Speaker 2: few days for that. Yeah, literally The Walking Dead. The
- 44:28Speaker 2: Walking Dead. I watched so much of it. I would
- 44:31Speaker 2: watch the first episode and I would watch it again.
- 44:34Speaker 2: And then I would watch The Talking Dead and then
- 44:37Speaker 2: I would watch another episode again. Like I was that
- 44:40Speaker 2: obsessed with it.
- 44:41Speaker 1: So you know exactly what to do and how to
- 44:43Speaker 1: hold a knife and how to get someone off of you.
- 44:46Speaker 1: That's pretty amazing.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Thank you. And then I also did have a benefit
- 44:50Speaker 2: of me coming from the dog kennel, having my dog
- 44:53Speaker 2: with me also. And then wearing rain boots because I
- 44:57Speaker 2: had more mass and I wasn't wearing like dainty heels.
- 45:00Speaker 2: I wasn't wearing sandals. You know, I had a sturdy
- 45:03Speaker 2: boot on for kicking. Wow.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Okay. So how long did it take for the police
- 45:08Speaker 1: to clear you in this?
- 45:10Speaker 2: It was kind of blurry because I ended up, I
- 45:16Speaker 2: had a stab wound in my forearm and then I
- 45:18Speaker 2: had one in my chest and And they didn't realize
- 45:23Speaker 2: that I had the one in my chest until I
- 45:25Speaker 2: was done being interrogated. So, like, four hours.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Was there any question that, you know, what had happened?
- 45:31Speaker 1: Or did they know that you were doing this in self-defense?
- 45:34Speaker 2: Well, I was a 5'2 girl against, like, a big guy.
- 45:38Speaker 2: There was a lot of questions. They're like, wait, why?
- 45:43Speaker 2: How did this even happen? How is she even, like, not...
- 45:47Speaker 2: You know, because... These defensive wins I have are like
- 45:52Speaker 2: very minimal. So, you know, for them coming into this situation,
- 45:56Speaker 2: they're like, oh, this is what she's saying. This is what,
- 46:00Speaker 2: you know, but we have to go through all the evidence.
- 46:02Speaker 2: And so they interrogated me, but they did let me
- 46:05Speaker 2: bring my dog with me. But I also was kind
- 46:09Speaker 2: of a bitch. I was like, if you don't let
- 46:12Speaker 2: me bring my dog, I'll sue you guys because I
- 46:15Speaker 2: have a doctor's note for him. And I did have
- 46:17Speaker 2: a doctor's note for him. And he went to the
- 46:21Speaker 2: hospital with me in general whenever I needed blood work
- 46:24Speaker 2: or anything done. So he was already trained to go
- 46:28Speaker 2: to the hospital with me. So if they didn't let
- 46:31Speaker 2: me have my ESA dog with me, I would have
- 46:34Speaker 2: lost it even more. Wow.
- 46:37Speaker 1: So he really protected you. I saw those pictures there.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Yeah. So he protected me. And they let me bring
- 46:46Speaker 2: my dog and then they questioned me. And then I
- 46:49Speaker 2: ended up having another stab wound in my chest when
- 46:53Speaker 2: I was about to get discharged and go home. And
- 46:57Speaker 2: then because of that stab wound, they had to send
- 47:00Speaker 2: me to the ICU. And so I ended up getting
- 47:05Speaker 2: an ambulance, going to a completely different hospital. And then
- 47:09Speaker 2: I don't know if anyone's been in the trauma unit,
- 47:12Speaker 2: but it's very scary. Um, so I was in the
- 47:17Speaker 2: trauma unit at UCI and there was people screaming. There
- 47:22Speaker 2: was other people. I heard like someone else got stabbed
- 47:26Speaker 2: that night that came in. Um, but like, it sounded
- 47:29Speaker 2: like more so gang violence. Um, I was in like
- 47:34Speaker 2: this little area with a curtain. And so it was like,
- 47:38Speaker 2: you heard everyone screaming everything, um, I didn't know if
- 47:42Speaker 2: anyone was coming after me because I just killed a guy. Right.
- 47:48Speaker 2: And I didn't know if he had a partner, anything.
- 47:51Speaker 2: So I was on edge thinking that someone might come
- 47:54Speaker 2: in and try to kill me again. And then it
- 48:00Speaker 2: all gets blurry because I ended up getting into a room.
- 48:03Speaker 2: And then I'm just like, I can't be here. I'm
- 48:06Speaker 2: so on edge. So they gave me Ativan, Zofran. And
- 48:11Speaker 2: lots of other stuff. Right.
- 48:14Speaker 1: So eventually you found out that John was on life support,
- 48:17Speaker 1: I think, right? And then eventually died, correct? What happened
- 48:22Speaker 1: with him?
- 48:22Speaker 2: So I found out he was on life support because
- 48:25Speaker 2: they were actually trying to bring me to the same
- 48:28Speaker 2: hospital as him. And I denied that. And so I
- 48:32Speaker 2: ended up going to UCI. And then he was in
- 48:36Speaker 2: Global in Huntington or Westminster, somewhere around there. And so
- 48:44Speaker 2: I didn't find out more about that until I was
- 48:49Speaker 2: out of the hospital, which I was in the hospital
- 48:51Speaker 2: for a couple days because they had to do exploratory
- 48:55Speaker 2: surgery on me to see if I was bleeding out.
- 48:59Speaker 2: And they wanted to run more tests and stuff. But luckily,
- 49:03Speaker 2: I'm totally fine. That stab wound was not harmful to me.
- 49:08Speaker 2: It was superficial in a sense. Well, I mean, I
- 49:12Speaker 2: still was cut and stuff, but it didn't hit any
- 49:14Speaker 2: of my vital organs or anything. So I was very
- 49:17Speaker 2: lucky in that sense. And I found out probably like
- 49:22Speaker 2: the day I came back or like the day after
- 49:25Speaker 2: I was on a good amount of stuff. And oh, wait, no,
- 49:31Speaker 2: that's when Jamie came in when I got out of
- 49:34Speaker 2: the hospital. And then I I was there. And then
- 49:38Speaker 2: the following day is when his sisters and stuff came,
- 49:42Speaker 2: brought flowers. And then that's when we kind of got
- 49:47Speaker 2: more information, what was happening to John. And my mom
- 49:52Speaker 2: also talked to my sister and I about what was
- 49:55Speaker 2: going on with John before the sisters got there. And
- 50:00Speaker 2: we wanted my mom to sign over the, the life
- 50:04Speaker 2: rights to his sister because she was in charge of him.
- 50:09Speaker 2: And we didn't think that that would look good for
- 50:12Speaker 2: her to do that. We didn't think she should have
- 50:14Speaker 2: that responsibility. And so we had the sisters pull the
- 50:19Speaker 2: plug on him. Right.
- 50:21Speaker 1: And then he soon after died. So what was people's
- 50:24Speaker 1: reaction after they found out that you had killed him
- 50:28Speaker 1: in self-defense? Finally, were these people coming to your defense
- 50:32Speaker 1: and saying, yes, this is something we went through and
- 50:34Speaker 1: we're so happy that he's gone?
- 50:36Speaker 2: I've honestly found out a lot more since, to be honest. Recently,
- 50:42Speaker 2: I found out that some of his family had a
- 50:47Speaker 2: funeral for him. And then some of his family didn't
- 50:50Speaker 2: go to the funeral. Some of his family was sad
- 50:53Speaker 2: by the news. Some women were sad by the news,
- 50:56Speaker 2: but understood what I had to do. It was just
- 51:00Speaker 2: very complex. And I'm not going to lie, I found
- 51:04Speaker 2: out people are still angry with me for taking his life,
- 51:07Speaker 2: some family members. I will forever have the support from
- 51:11Speaker 2: one of his sisters. However, he's had a different relationship
- 51:15Speaker 2: with a lot of people.
- 51:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I understand that. And do you have a relationship
- 51:19Speaker 1: with his children? Have you ever spoken to them?
- 51:21Speaker 2: Yes. No, I love Emily and Abigail. I guess he
- 51:25Speaker 2: has another son too. And then another daughter.
- 51:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:29Speaker 2: One of the daughters will never know he's her dad though. Um,
- 51:34Speaker 2: she has a great stepdad in her life and she
- 51:37Speaker 2: also is, um, A little bit mentally. I think she's
- 51:42Speaker 2: autistic or something or has Down syndrome, but she has
- 51:48Speaker 2: something where she can't really connect the dots that like
- 51:51Speaker 2: you can't accept that that would be her dad, if
- 51:53Speaker 2: that makes sense, if you were to even tell her.
- 51:57Speaker 2: So he has a daughter, that one daughter, and then
- 52:00Speaker 2: he has two, Emily and Abigail from Tanya. And then
- 52:03Speaker 2: he also has a son that you find out in
- 52:07Speaker 2: Tanya's book that he has. And I also found out
- 52:10Speaker 2: from her book that he had a son. And I
- 52:14Speaker 2: was like, wait, Tanya. And I've never met him. I've
- 52:21Speaker 2: heard great things about him. But I kind of am like,
- 52:25Speaker 2: I think that might be weird for me to reach
- 52:27Speaker 2: out to him and be like, hey, do you want
- 52:29Speaker 2: to be friends? Yeah. I think that has to be
- 52:33Speaker 2: on his part. But I'm open to getting to know
- 52:36Speaker 2: him as well, you know? Right. So.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Do you think that this has finally brought your sister
- 52:41Speaker 1: and your mom and you closer together now that this
- 52:44Speaker 1: is all over?
- 52:44Speaker 2: I think that it really has helped bridge the generational
- 52:49Speaker 2: trauma gap. I think that we're able to have so
- 52:53Speaker 2: many conversations in openness about stuff where in the past,
- 52:59Speaker 2: I don't think we would have been able to. And
- 53:02Speaker 2: I think it's a really beautiful journey because my mom
- 53:06Speaker 2: is healing from her trauma and My sister is healing
- 53:09Speaker 2: from her trauma. I've done a lot of my healing work.
- 53:12Speaker 2: I say the healing journey is forever, but I'm at
- 53:16Speaker 2: a really great place, to be honest. So I think
- 53:20Speaker 2: that it's been such a blessing in disguise.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm so glad to hear that. So my biggest
- 53:28Speaker 1: question is, is your mom dating? Or is she able
- 53:31Speaker 1: to date now that this has happened to her?
- 53:33Speaker 2: Well, she actually was engaged to someone recently. A couple
- 53:38Speaker 2: years or maybe like four years after John. He was
- 53:42Speaker 2: a nice guy. It just didn't work out. But he
- 53:45Speaker 2: was there for her. She actually got cancer in her eye.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 53:50Speaker 2: It's weird because it was the same eye that I
- 53:54Speaker 2: stabbed John in. So it's just weird how the body
- 53:57Speaker 2: keeps the score. And that's how her body accumulated the
- 54:02Speaker 2: trauma as well.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Wow.
- 54:04Speaker 1: And how is she doing now?
- 54:05Speaker 2: He's good. She doesn't have cancer right now. And that
- 54:11Speaker 2: guy was very helpful in her journey. So I appreciate him.
- 54:15Speaker 2: We're still friends with him. However, that's not her person.
- 54:20Speaker 2: And she's dating someone right now. However, my family does
- 54:25Speaker 2: have rules. We won't meet the guy for six months.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Got it.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 54:32Speaker 1: But from what you hear about him, are you okay
- 54:34Speaker 1: with how that's going?
- 54:36Speaker 2: He's a firefighter. Okay. And so that's great to me
- 54:41Speaker 2: because it means that you like to help other people out,
- 54:45Speaker 2: but you're not looking for that big paycheck. Right. Okay.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Well, that's good. So what would your advice be to
- 54:52Speaker 1: people that are going through some sort of a trauma
- 54:54Speaker 1: or they've been through a trauma?
- 54:55Speaker 2: I would say my advice is to get help, get therapy. Okay.
- 55:00Speaker 2: But be particular. Not every therapist is for you. And
- 55:04Speaker 2: not every therapist has helped me in my journey. Meet
- 55:07Speaker 2: with someone that knows what you're going through. Even don't
- 55:11Speaker 2: be closed off to trauma coaches. I do trauma coaching
- 55:15Speaker 2: and I get results from my clients where they say,
- 55:19Speaker 2: I've been in therapy for 12 years and I've never
- 55:21Speaker 2: learned about this, Tara. My therapist never taught me about this.
- 55:25Speaker 2: And this has helped me so much in my life,
- 55:27Speaker 2: like learning about the nervous system, learning about breath work,
- 55:31Speaker 2: learning about narcissism. Therapists aren't trained to know about narcissists.
- 55:37Speaker 2: You have to look for a therapist that knows narcissism.
- 55:40Speaker 1: But not only that, I mean, they're trained by going
- 55:44Speaker 1: to school. It's a totally different thing to have someone
- 55:47Speaker 1: that knows what you've been through because they've been through
- 55:49Speaker 1: that experience. And sometimes you really need to connect with
- 55:52Speaker 1: someone That's been in your shoes because otherwise you're just
- 55:55Speaker 1: telling someone who's getting their information or their experience through books.
- 55:59Speaker 1: And that doesn't always cross over and make a lot
- 56:02Speaker 1: of sense.
- 56:02Speaker 2: A hundred percent.
- 56:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:04Speaker 2: No. And, you know, they're being taught the DSMs and
- 56:09Speaker 2: there's been a lot of studies that, you know, maybe
- 56:14Speaker 2: these stigmas aren't really reality.
- 56:17Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 56:18Speaker 2: I do believe that some people are 100% narcissistic personality disorder,
- 56:23Speaker 2: antisocial personality disorder. However, a lot of people are so complex.
- 56:30Speaker 2: And I want to say abuse is abuse. Toxic is toxic.
- 56:33Speaker 2: So if you're in something like that, get out. Try
- 56:36Speaker 2: to figure a way out of that. Be careful, though.
- 56:40Speaker 2: Make the plan. And you have to understand that people
- 56:44Speaker 2: can be toxic, but... Those people, if you don't enable them,
- 56:48Speaker 2: maybe they might be able to learn and grow. You know,
- 56:51Speaker 2: a true narcissist, a true antisocial personality disorder, I don't
- 56:55Speaker 2: think can truly do that. But if a person, say,
- 56:59Speaker 2: was diagnosed borderline and they have a copious amount of trauma,
- 57:04Speaker 2: maybe they just need to work on that trauma and
- 57:06Speaker 2: heal from that trauma. And then it might make you
- 57:09Speaker 2: aware of the other things and your other behaviors in
- 57:11Speaker 2: your life. Yeah. I have been that toxic person at times.
- 57:16Speaker 2: And I can say I'm not a narcissist. I'm not bipolar.
- 57:20Speaker 2: I'm not borderline. But I've been diagnosed as those things.
- 57:25Speaker 2: And until I really got with other therapists after my attack,
- 57:30Speaker 2: I've asked them about those diagnoses. And they've been like, no,
- 57:34Speaker 2: you have CPTSD.
- 57:36Speaker 1: And what would your advice be to people who know
- 57:39Speaker 1: someone in a toxic relationship how to sort of help
- 57:44Speaker 1: them communicate that and communicate what they see so that
- 57:47Speaker 1: those people can get out of danger. Because like we
- 57:49Speaker 1: were talking about earlier, sometimes when somebody's so blinded by love,
- 57:52Speaker 1: they just do not see it. And then they end
- 57:54Speaker 1: up isolating themselves from all their friends. And it becomes
- 57:57Speaker 1: really dangerous.
- 57:59Speaker 2: I think that if you're that friend, you need to
- 58:02Speaker 2: 100% have boundaries for yourself. So know how much you're
- 58:08Speaker 2: giving to that person. You know, if you're giving too
- 58:11Speaker 2: much where it makes you stressed out all the time,
- 58:13Speaker 2: pull back and tell them that you need to do
- 58:16Speaker 2: this and do that. But do like a compliment sandwich.
- 58:20Speaker 2: Like I like to tell someone if I can't get together,
- 58:22Speaker 2: I would love to get together. I can't right now.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Maybe next Tuesday. Something like that. You know, boundaries don't
- 58:30Speaker 2: have to be so hard if you know how to
- 58:33Speaker 2: communicate them. Right.
- 58:36Speaker 1: So now tell people what you're doing in this podcast
- 58:38Speaker 1: that you have.
- 58:39Speaker 2: So I have Survivor Squad podcast with Collier Landry. He
- 58:42Speaker 2: is a fellow survivor. And we interview different survivors on
- 58:47Speaker 2: our podcast, get to know their stories, get to know
- 58:52Speaker 2: what comes next after the healing, everything. And it's really
- 58:55Speaker 2: interesting because we get to have a conversation with survivors.
- 59:00Speaker 2: And we all have unique perspectives, but we are able
- 59:04Speaker 2: to relate to each other on a whole other level.
- 59:07Speaker 2: And then I also have my coaching. I do Moving
- 59:10Speaker 2: Past Trauma Mondays. We call it your Landry, where we
- 59:13Speaker 2: go through trauma. We teach you certain tools. We talk
- 59:17Speaker 2: about certain situations. We talk about the nervous system. We
- 59:20Speaker 2: talk about breath work. We talk about so much more.
- 59:24Speaker 2: And you really get to learn more. your relationship patterns,
- 59:28Speaker 2: your trauma patterns, and get to know yourself.
- 59:31Speaker 1: Does your mom listen to your podcast?
- 59:33Speaker 2: She does. She's supposed to be a guest on it
- 59:36Speaker 2: soon as well, but we haven't recorded her episode yet
- 59:39Speaker 2: because she's kind of like really easily available to me.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Exactly. She can be the backup when a guest comes out. Yeah, yeah. Okay,
- 59:49Speaker 1: so tell people where they can find your podcast and
- 59:51Speaker 1: where they can locate you if they want to.
- 59:53Speaker 3: Talk to you.
- 59:54Speaker 2: My podcast, Survivor Squad Podcast, should be available where any
- 59:58Speaker 2: podcasts are available. We are also on YouTube and we
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: have a Patreon. Support us on Patreon.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Well, Tara, thank you so much. I wish you the best.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Please give our best to your mom and your sister.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Thank you. I will.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Take care.
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: for it?
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: This exclusive place that Dad has connections with. They have
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: more cars for more dealerships than like anywhere else.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: You have to put me in touch. What's it called?
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: It's Dunaidial.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Where?
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: Dunaidial.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: There's an accent on the E.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: Do you mean.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: Yes, I got it on Dundale Cars.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: Lift? Please. Are you going past Kimmage?
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Oh, Kimmage.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: No.
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: Dundale Cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
