Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is football at four.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Anytime a blood clot is involved, it easily could involve
- 0:06Speaker 2: multiple weeks. Let's hope it's not progressing. Let's hope he
- 0:10Speaker 2: doesn't have to be on long-term anticoagulants or it could
- 0:14Speaker 2: have a huge impact. Always safety first. So far, the
- 0:19Speaker 2: Eagle statement means there's no shenanigans. They seem to come
- 0:23Speaker 2: clean with everything. They weren't hiding anything from the world.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It's a surprise to them as well. It does explain
- 0:30Speaker 2: the unusual calf injury that Jalen Hurts was referring to.
- 0:35Speaker 1: That is Dr. David Chow, and we will have him
- 0:38Speaker 1: on tonight at 5.30, and he can give us more
- 0:41Speaker 1: details on what is going on with Jalen Hurts. But
- 0:43Speaker 1: the news today, he is out for the game against
- 0:47Speaker 1: the Carolina Panthers. Tanner McKee will start for the Birds,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and what does that mean? It's football at four. Adam
- 0:54Speaker 1: Kaplan is here today, powered by the Inside the Birds
- 0:57Speaker 1: podcast right here on the Sports Bash, and don't forget,
- 1:00Speaker 1: you can listen to the Inside the Birds podcast on
- 1:03Speaker 1: all podcasting platforms. Well, quite the news today, Adam. This
- 1:07Speaker 1: looked like a Phillies-dominated day with Dave Dombroski, and he
- 1:11Speaker 1: said he didn't want to announce the Mattingly news because
- 1:13Speaker 1: the Eagles were playing over the weekend, so that's why
- 1:16Speaker 1: they held off, but the Eagles today, they have the
- 1:19Speaker 1: big news as Jalen Hurts will miss the game. He
- 1:22Speaker 1: has a blood clot, and this really could change potentially
- 1:26Speaker 1: the season for Philadelphia.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Jeff and I did an emergency show,
- 1:32Speaker 3: and I could tell you from personal experience, I didn't
- 1:35Speaker 3: have quite a blood clot, but I was on blood
- 1:36Speaker 3: thinners years ago, and I remember being told there are
- 1:40Speaker 3: only certain things I'd be allowed to do, and you've
- 1:43Speaker 3: got to be careful. You don't want to bleed. You've
- 1:45Speaker 3: got to go to the hospital. I got really scared.
- 1:47Speaker 3: My situation happened. Actually, I woke up with a terribly
- 1:51Speaker 3: bad ankle, and it was very odd, and I had
- 1:53Speaker 3: a bunch of testing, and then I wound up having
- 1:55Speaker 3: to be on blood thinners and something else, so It's
- 1:57Speaker 3: pretty scary. See, Mike, if you look at the statement,
- 2:00Speaker 3: getting over to Hertz here, the last paragraph of the statement,
- 2:03Speaker 3: the one that's troubling, the plot moved. Because he was
- 2:06Speaker 3: able to play through it, he got cleared, but then
- 2:08Speaker 3: it moved later on after the game. So that concerned them.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And he's going to be, he's not day-to-day, he's week-to-week.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I can tell you, as someone who's been on, who's
- 2:18Speaker 3: had something similar, like you can't get cleared until it clears.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And Dr.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Schock texted me, so we're texting each other back a
- 2:27Speaker 3: little bit. So, yeah, it's scary, Mike. This is just
- 2:31Speaker 3: bad news, but he'll be okay. They just got to
- 2:33Speaker 3: get the thing cleared up, but we wish him well. And, yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 3: Tara McKay, and by the way, my understanding, if they'd
- 2:39Speaker 3: like to bring him back, they're working on it, but
- 2:41Speaker 3: he's interest elsewhere, so he may not be coming back.
- 2:44Speaker 3: So right now, call Peyton, Mike. If the backup quarterback,
- 2:53Speaker 3: if he gets hurt, they're going to have to add
- 2:57Speaker 3: another quarterback. They don't have a choice here. The other
- 3:00Speaker 3: thing is you have to add somebody who knows the system.
- 3:02Speaker 3: The West Coast is the verbiage system. It's not the
- 3:05Speaker 3: number system. So that's the issue now. They're going to
- 3:08Speaker 3: have to find somebody, Mike, right now who knows the system.
- 3:12Speaker 3: They're in a tough bind right now, no doubt. Remember,
- 3:14Speaker 3: this is Mike. Whoever comes in, and they need to
- 3:16Speaker 3: have somebody by tomorrow, He may only get the Saturday walkthrough.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Who knows if they could get someone in by tomorrow.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Right. I mean, their injury list, too, by the way,
- 3:26Speaker 1: is like a CVS receipt. I mean, there was 24
- 3:29Speaker 1: games on that list the other night, and how many
- 3:32Speaker 1: of those guys are even in peril, can play, won't play,
- 3:36Speaker 1: but it hurts being added to that list. I think
- 3:37Speaker 1: when we saw Kath last week, people probably didn't think
- 3:41Speaker 1: all that much of it because he played. Then he
- 3:43Speaker 1: has two carries for two yards. It might really tell
- 3:46Speaker 1: you a little bit more in the way he answered
- 3:47Speaker 1: that question about why he didn't run as much. Right.
- 3:51Speaker 3: So, Mike, I brought this up on our show this
- 3:55Speaker 3: morning that I didn't mention because we were going over
- 3:57Speaker 3: the injuries. I said I wanted to explain to people
- 4:00Speaker 3: the way it works with injury reports. And it's interesting
- 4:02Speaker 3: that the Eagles statement kind of clarified it. So what
- 4:05Speaker 3: happened was the Eagles said in their statement that Hurts
- 4:10Speaker 3: got treatment after Thursday's practice when he talked to the
- 4:13Speaker 3: staff about it. Now, some teams, Mike, will issue an
- 4:19Speaker 3: addendum to the– they'll actually– like the Rams did last night,
- 4:24Speaker 3: they made an addition to the injury reports. They also
- 4:26Speaker 3: came out– actually came out after I went to sleep.
- 4:28Speaker 3: So some teams do this. Like they won't wait until
- 4:32Speaker 3: after Friday's practice. They'll just put it after Thursday's practice.
- 4:37Speaker 3: So the Eagles– didn't date they added their data hurts
- 4:41Speaker 3: last week that we talked about practice in full to
- 4:45Speaker 3: the world that uh... our jeff mosher got clarified when
- 4:47Speaker 3: he mailed the league a couple years ago as long
- 4:50Speaker 3: as the player takes all the ones like he takes
- 4:52Speaker 3: a full practice you're not required to listed on the
- 4:55Speaker 3: interport which i think is complete nonsense that used to
- 4:58Speaker 3: be the opposite if you get any treatment for the
- 5:00Speaker 3: injury the old rules that you have to be listed
- 5:02Speaker 3: on it they stated they relaxed itself anyway uh... Yeah, now, look,
- 5:08Speaker 3: over half of them, almost over half of them were
- 5:10Speaker 3: listed on last week's injury report. So we need to
- 5:13Speaker 3: make that clear. Now, the ones that, as I told
- 5:16Speaker 3: you on Tuesday, I said be very careful of thinking
- 5:18Speaker 3: that Devontae Smith's playing this week. My understanding was different
- 5:23Speaker 3: than other people are guessing out there. I didn't agree
- 5:25Speaker 3: with it. But what I didn't know is he's got
- 5:28Speaker 3: a toe injury, Mike, in addition. to the hamstring injury.
- 5:31Speaker 3: He's working on our Andrew DiCicco. He's working on Jason
- 5:35Speaker 3: Field at practice today. So not looking good for him,
- 5:38Speaker 3: not looking good for Barkley. Mike, I don't know what
- 5:42Speaker 3: they've got to help Tanner McKee, but we've got to
- 5:45Speaker 3: see who's going to be the backfield. I mentioned on
- 5:47Speaker 3: our show this morning, why in the world could they
- 5:49Speaker 3: not get Carson Steel to football like they did, as
- 5:52Speaker 3: you and I talked about on Tuesday.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Absolutely, and by the way, Tanner McKee will be the quarterback.
- 5:57Speaker 1: He will start. How does that change the offense? How
- 6:00Speaker 1: does it change the calls? What's different now that you
- 6:03Speaker 1: can do with Tanner McKee that maybe you can't do
- 6:06Speaker 1: with Jalen Hurts?
- 6:06Speaker 3: All right, a couple things here that folks should know.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Let me explain a little bit deeper that we have
- 6:11Speaker 3: a couple minutes here. Tanner McKee, his first year, prior
- 6:17Speaker 3: to his breakout game against Baltimore in his rookie season,
- 6:21Speaker 3: he looked so stiff in his drop back. Didn't move
- 6:24Speaker 3: very well. Honestly, he looked like he had no chance.
- 6:27Speaker 3: And I just think it happened. You can't really explain.
- 6:31Speaker 3: All of a sudden, he started looking like an NFL
- 6:33Speaker 3: quarterback against Baltimore and absolutely earned it because you were
- 6:38Speaker 3: not going to put him through waivers because he looked
- 6:39Speaker 3: so good in the preseason. So he earned a spot,
- 6:42Speaker 3: and then he looked really good the following spring where
- 6:45Speaker 3: you're like, wow, this guy could be Hurts' long-term backup.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And he looked really good, so we fast-forwarded, to where
- 6:52Speaker 3: the regression started in the game against the Commandos in
- 6:56Speaker 3: Week 18 here. Mike, you look bad.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I mean, he just didn't look good. Now, that was
- 7:00Speaker 3: in the old scheme. Yeah. Now, look, he's playing with backups.
- 7:04Speaker 3: That may have been part of it. He didn't look good. But, Mike,
- 7:07Speaker 3: the damning thing is they moved to West Coast terminology,
- 7:10Speaker 3: which is the Verbit system. Sirianni's is the numbering system.
- 7:14Speaker 3: And I don't know what happened, but he seemed to
- 7:16Speaker 3: be overthinking, not driving the ball downfield like we used
- 7:19Speaker 3: to see from him for two years. And he just
- 7:22Speaker 3: looked bad. So right now with Tanner McKee, Mike, and
- 7:26Speaker 3: this is the final year of his rookie deal, he
- 7:29Speaker 3: just doesn't look like the same guy. Now, look, anything
- 7:31Speaker 3: could happen, right? Anything could happen. Let's hope Wicks' hamstring injury,
- 7:35Speaker 3: which he had two weeks ago, he wasn't listed with
- 7:37Speaker 3: it last week, but he's back on the entry report
- 7:39Speaker 3: this week. Let's hope he's okay to play. I thought
- 7:41Speaker 3: Makai Lemon looked better last week. That might have been
- 7:43Speaker 3: his best game in terms of movement. Yes, we know
- 7:46Speaker 3: about the bad play he had going out of bounds,
- 7:48Speaker 3: but in terms of being a factor, and you and
- 7:51Speaker 3: I talked about Tuesday getting Garris Cooper more involved. Goddard
- 7:54Speaker 3: is not even on the injury report coming out of
- 7:56Speaker 3: the game. That's one of the best positive injury pieces
- 8:00Speaker 3: of news. You should note that.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Well, I would ask you, Adam, on Friday we did
- 8:06Speaker 1: joke about Carson Steele that he caught all these passes,
- 8:08Speaker 1: a lot of them in the backfield with Andy Dalton.
- 8:11Speaker 1: McKee and Dalton, though, were the guys kind of engineering
- 8:14Speaker 1: a lot of those drives. So could you see some
- 8:17Speaker 1: more check downs?
- 8:18Speaker 3: I didn't think about that. It's okay. So let's extrapolate.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Will McKee check a down on him? He is– Jalen
- 8:26Speaker 3: has the same affliction that his predecessor Carson Wentz had.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Wentz did not like to track the ball down. It
- 8:31Speaker 3: would drive us crazy on inside the birds, particularly in
- 8:36Speaker 3: 2019 when Carson started to– And it hurts. He just doesn't.
- 8:40Speaker 3: He won't. He rarely checks it down. And as Morning
- 8:44Speaker 3: Morning Leg, the former Eagles offensive coordinator, told me, there
- 8:47Speaker 3: is a check down in every single drop back. You
- 8:49Speaker 3: just have to know where the guy is. It's like
- 8:52Speaker 3: the hot receiver check down, whatever you want to call it.
- 8:54Speaker 3: It's in there. You've got to take it. And you've
- 8:56Speaker 3: got to take it quickly or it'll evaporate. And Jalen,
- 8:59Speaker 3: as we pointed out inside the berth repeatedly last year,
- 9:01Speaker 3: ruined the progression. He just wouldn't check the ball down
- 9:04Speaker 3: sometimes when it was there. So... It's a good point
- 9:08Speaker 3: with McKee, especially checking the ball down. He's probably more
- 9:12Speaker 3: willing to do it. Got to use it. Carson Steele
- 9:15Speaker 3: is that guy. I'm not saying pick him up for fantasy, folks,
- 9:18Speaker 3: but to be clear, because I know people know him
- 9:19Speaker 3: and follow him in the fantasy business. But Damian Pierce
- 9:22Speaker 3: looked bad, Mike. Other than the six-yard run, which is well-designed,
- 9:26Speaker 3: he's stiff. He's just not explosive. You know, Carson Steele
- 9:31Speaker 3: had one year at Ball State at over 15 yards.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Over the years, he was there. He transferred to UCLA.
- 9:36Speaker 3: So let's see what he has on Sunday.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Real quick, Adam, we talked about this laundry list of injuries.
- 9:43Speaker 1: What's the feel on Landon Dickerson? That was a weird
- 9:47Speaker 1: day he had yesterday.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Yeah, his press conference. If someone tells me I need
- 9:53Speaker 3: to listen to something, if they heard something interesting, I'll listen.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I don't know what to make of it. In an
- 10:00Speaker 3: odd way, look, Willie Lampkin stands over here, but we
- 10:07Speaker 3: know what he is. He's too short. He's not a
- 10:08Speaker 3: star quality player. To be clear, I heard what you asked, Jeff.
- 10:12Speaker 3: What the Eagles would like to know about him, however
- 10:15Speaker 3: long he plays, could he be the top backup? interior
- 10:18Speaker 3: lineman going in to the office that'd be great but
- 10:20Speaker 3: this is a great waiver clinic up from the ramps
- 10:22Speaker 3: but he's not a starting player lannik dickerson i know
- 10:27Speaker 3: some people so he he's finished he's washed he might
- 10:31Speaker 3: be but they need to find that out if he's
- 10:33Speaker 3: healthy enough to play but they didn't find that out
- 10:35Speaker 3: and that you that folks would be right but here's
- 10:37Speaker 3: what here's what i do know the coaches think michael
- 10:40Speaker 3: marsh is so not ready to play he put in
- 10:43Speaker 3: fred johnson at guard he's never played in his life
- 10:45Speaker 3: So he had a minimal amount of practice late in
- 10:47Speaker 3: training camp. He's not a guard. The Eagles know that.
- 10:51Speaker 3: So it's kind of a mess. And how about the Eagles, Mike, also?
- 10:55Speaker 3: One more no for you. They have not worked out
- 10:56Speaker 3: a player this week. Can you explain that?
- 10:59Speaker 1: Not with the 24 players on your injury list. Why?
- 11:03Speaker 3: Why? I don't get it.
- 11:05Speaker 1: No, that's crazy. Also, obviously the Eagles at home this
- 11:08Speaker 1: week against the Carolina Panthers, and they will not have
- 11:11Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts in the game. You heard Adam. Likely no Barkley,
- 11:15Speaker 1: no Smith. .
- 11:20Speaker 3: .
- 11:23Speaker 1: .
- 11:46Speaker 3: That's the problem. Even if he gets cleared to play,
- 11:49Speaker 3: we have no idea how many snaps he can handle.
- 11:51Speaker 3: And remember, with Jalex Hunt's injury, Noel Smith and Grenard
- 11:57Speaker 3: and Epinesa is not a pass rusher, really. Jihad Campbell
- 12:02Speaker 3: did take edge rush snaps, as we noted, on inside
- 12:04Speaker 3: the tape. On their practice squad, they don't really have anyone.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Keyshawn James Newby was cut as a seventh-rounder. He cleared waivers.
- 12:15Speaker 3: They don't really have anyone, Mike. They're in a tough way, man.
- 12:19Speaker 3: And how about the Panthers now are a one-and-a-half point favorite?
- 12:21Speaker 3: How about that?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that line took a shift because of the Hertz news,
- 12:25Speaker 1: which came down.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Actually, before that, Mike, real quick, this morning I saw it.
- 12:30Speaker 3: It moved to one and a half before the news
- 12:33Speaker 3: came out, and I think it's, what, to three and
- 12:35Speaker 3: a half or four points now, something like that?
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yep, it's moved about four from where it opened to
- 12:39Speaker 1: where it is now. So Jalen Hurts out for the game,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and possibly we would imagine longer than just one week
- 12:48Speaker 1: here with this superficial blood clot that he has in
- 12:53Speaker 1: his calf. All right, Adam Kaplan today for the football
- 12:56Speaker 1: at four. Eagles, Carolina, listen to the game right here
- 13:00Speaker 1: on 97.3 ESPN, and check out the Inside the Birds
- 13:03Speaker 1: podcast on all podcasting platforms. Thanks, Adam.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Thank you.
