- 0:00Speaker 1: Bulet Cavs Show Special Guests pull up with the Grandma
- 0:02Speaker 1: Nier Mickey Facts. Micky Yo, I don't think enough people
- 0:08Speaker 1: in hip hop know about Grand Marnier because you're the
- 0:10Speaker 1: only rapper I've ever seen off that Grand Marnier. Man. Yeah, Yeah,
- 0:14Speaker 1: that's the way it's supposed to be. That's that orange shit. Yeah,
- 0:17Speaker 1: the cool is this something like this is like your
- 0:18Speaker 1: go to. It's been my go to as of late.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I was heavy on it in Old nine when I
- 0:23Speaker 1: did my deal at JAV and I just started picking
- 0:26Speaker 1: it back up recently. All right. So I always when
- 0:30Speaker 1: I think of Mickey Facts, I think of golden era,
- 0:33Speaker 1: of the blog era of rap music. Yeah, at the time,
- 0:37Speaker 1: there's not right, there's two Dope boys and all these
- 0:39Speaker 1: just staples, and you know, really the real an rs
- 0:43Speaker 1: of that era were those blog sites, right, and you
- 0:46Speaker 1: were one of the forefathers of that era. I feel like,
- 0:51Speaker 1: you know, you kind of you know, yeah, grandfathered a
- 0:54Speaker 1: lot of that shit that was going on at that time, man.
- 0:56Speaker 1: And you know, obviously was on the second Freshman cover yep,
- 1:01Speaker 1: the one that really made the Freshman cover like blowing,
- 1:04Speaker 1: because that first Freshman cover was cool. It was great
- 1:07Speaker 1: artists on there, but it wasn't like really a thing
- 1:08Speaker 1: until the second one hit. Second one hit. It changed
- 1:11Speaker 1: the game because the first one as as great as
- 1:14Speaker 1: I thought. It was a great cover, but it didn't
- 1:17Speaker 1: do too well. It was like Crooked Eye. Joel Ortiz
- 1:21Speaker 1: Loope was boozy on it, Sagon Ye Pap. It was
- 1:27Speaker 1: a couple of people on it. The thing about it
- 1:29Speaker 1: was like the game was changing from the streets to
- 1:32Speaker 1: the to the Internet. And when Dayton Thomas got there,
- 1:36Speaker 1: he was like, I want to do a freshman cover
- 1:37Speaker 1: and I want to cover the blog. The people who
- 1:39Speaker 1: was big on the blogs they said hell no, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: he was. He fought and fought and fought and made
- 1:45Speaker 1: it happen because the last one didn't sell well. When
- 1:49Speaker 1: we did that one, that's like the top selling that
- 1:51Speaker 1: was one of the top selling magazines. Yeah, because it
- 1:53Speaker 1: was you, Asher Roth, Walle Bob Bob, Charles Hamilton, Corey Guns.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Every time I hear Charles hand was his name, I
- 2:02Speaker 1: just I have such a big fan Free Charles. He's
- 2:05Speaker 1: locked up? Oh is he ship? Yeah? Corey Guns was
- 2:07Speaker 1: ace Hood on there, Theacehood, Cuddy Cuddy currency Wow and Blue. Wow. Yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 1: that's a crazy cover. That's a crazy cover. And it's
- 2:17Speaker 1: funny too because at the time I remember, like the
- 2:21Speaker 1: the the people who you were, like, h it was
- 2:24Speaker 1: like Ace Hood. Acehood made the cover and I was
- 2:26Speaker 1: like hmm. I mean, obviously Ashood went on to have
- 2:29Speaker 1: hit records in like a great career and stuff, but incredible,
- 2:31Speaker 1: but yeah, that was such a it was to me.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It just kind of really time stamped the era perfectly perfectly.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It was a perfect, perfect, perfectly balanced liked say were
- 2:44Speaker 1: you know? Was there a lot of camaraderie between a
- 2:46Speaker 1: lot of a lot of you guys on that cover.
- 2:47Speaker 1: At the time the time, Me and Corey were very cool. Uh.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I was a fan of Blue. Me and Currency was
- 2:54Speaker 1: super cool. Uh. Me and Wiley had a little bit
- 2:56Speaker 1: of issues. Me and Cuddy had did a record. We
- 2:59Speaker 1: were cool being Me and Charles were cool. I had
- 3:02Speaker 1: met Acehood that day, so for the most part, I
- 3:06Speaker 1: was cool with everybody there. What was it? What were
- 3:08Speaker 1: the issues you had with La? It was just some
- 3:10Speaker 1: music stuff. Like I was trying to get some music
- 3:12Speaker 1: done with him, meet him and push. I was trying
- 3:15Speaker 1: to get a track with us three on it and
- 3:16Speaker 1: it just didn't happen. So I kind of took offense
- 3:19Speaker 1: to that. I was new to the game, so I
- 3:20Speaker 1: didn't really understand what was going on. I didn't know how.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I thought if somebody sent you a record and you know,
- 3:25Speaker 1: you guys are on the same level, you're coming up,
- 3:26Speaker 1: you just get it done. But he was real busy
- 3:30Speaker 1: at the time. He couldn't get to it. So that
- 3:32Speaker 1: was like one of my first lessons in the industry.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But I took it to heart, and that's why we
- 3:35Speaker 1: kind of had issues at that time. Was it awkward? Shoot?
- 3:38Speaker 1: It was a very aw shoot, very awkward, but you
- 3:42Speaker 1: know there was you know, darker forces behind the scenes,
- 3:46Speaker 1: and when he kind of realized what was going on,
- 3:49Speaker 1: he kind of spun the block and was like, Yo,
- 3:51Speaker 1: my fault. You know, I understand what he was trying
- 3:54Speaker 1: to do. And there was people that was in my
- 3:55Speaker 1: ear at the time, so you know, he apologized and
- 3:57Speaker 1: we kind of got behind it after that. Yeah, It's
- 3:59Speaker 1: it's crazy because if you look at a lot of
- 4:01Speaker 1: the guys on that cover, right, there's so much like
- 4:04Speaker 1: what IF's on that cover? Right? Yeah, what if? Asheroth
- 4:08Speaker 1: came out five years later, because I feel like Asherroth
- 4:12Speaker 1: missed kind of the window to be like, I guess
- 4:15Speaker 1: where Jack Harley is now or with Gzy and mackl like,
- 4:17Speaker 1: like you know what I mean. I think when Asharrock
- 4:19Speaker 1: came out, I don't think people really got it all
- 4:20Speaker 1: the way. I think all of us. I think when
- 4:23Speaker 1: you look at that cover, all of us were the
- 4:26Speaker 1: guinea pigs for every other artist that came out after.
- 4:32Speaker 1: You know, from you you take someone like you take
- 4:35Speaker 1: someone like Asha, like you said, you know, people saw that,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and then you have Mac Miller. Afterwards you look at
- 4:42Speaker 1: somebody like Blue, you see that, and then you know,
- 4:46Speaker 1: after Blue, you have like a Fashan or you have
- 4:50Speaker 1: a Ja Cole right currency right like currency was just incredible.
- 4:54Speaker 1: After that, you know, you get with w so like
- 4:57Speaker 1: people saw what the mistakes that we may have made
- 5:00Speaker 1: and just kind of was like, Okay, I'm gonna stay
- 5:01Speaker 1: away from that and kind of do this, or I'm
- 5:03Speaker 1: gonna do this, or I'm gonna work with these guys
- 5:05Speaker 1: that came out before us. And what about for you?
- 5:07Speaker 1: What do you think like for you, maybe you know,
- 5:11Speaker 1: were the things that transpire that maybe kind of prevented
- 5:13Speaker 1: you from me to your full potential because you had
- 5:15Speaker 1: full you know, full record deals and all that shit.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Like two main things with people taking my style being
- 5:20Speaker 1: a little bit more popular than me at the time,
- 5:24Speaker 1: I was the guy doing skinny jeans. I was the
- 5:25Speaker 1: guy who was fashion forward. I was the guy putting
- 5:28Speaker 1: a song out every week on the internet when nobody
- 5:30Speaker 1: was doing it. Yeah you did that. It was either
- 5:32Speaker 1: you were Crooked Eye. Crooked Eye did the freestyles. Shot
- 5:36Speaker 1: the Crooked Eye. He did the freestyles every week. I
- 5:39Speaker 1: was putting out songs like I put Drake. Drake was
- 5:41Speaker 1: on that series when nobody knew who Drake was. Cuddy
- 5:45Speaker 1: was on that series. You know, Corey was on that
- 5:49Speaker 1: series like I was. When I was doing that, it
- 5:52Speaker 1: was it felt different. Buckshot was on that series. It
- 5:54Speaker 1: was just a whole bunch of craziness. So I think
- 5:57Speaker 1: that mixed with the fashion people kind of took the
- 6:00Speaker 1: skinny jinks and people were baggy like if you oh
- 6:02Speaker 1: for sure, people were crazy looking at the time. So
- 6:04Speaker 1: so those two things and then Jive folding. When Jive folded,
- 6:09Speaker 1: that was the end. That was the That was the
- 6:11Speaker 1: end of my trajectory because now I'm moving on to RCA.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I did a deal with RCA because I didn't get dropped.
- 6:18Speaker 1: It's just the label folded. So the people did get dropped,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but I had got another deal. It's the same me
- 6:23Speaker 1: and Justin Timberlake won the same label, so he got
- 6:25Speaker 1: moved to RCA EPIC and I got moved to RCA,
- 6:28Speaker 1: did a new deal. But it's people who didn't believe
- 6:29Speaker 1: in me. And understand, yeah, the same people who were
- 6:31Speaker 1: a RS, the people who brought you on the team,
- 6:33Speaker 1: they're no longer they're no longer there. And when you're
- 6:35Speaker 1: like that in in a building, it's like you're no
- 6:37Speaker 1: man's land, no man's LANs. So that's what happened, and
- 6:39Speaker 1: that's the reason why it kind of just fell apart.
- 6:42Speaker 1: It happens a lot, right especially, it doesn't even happen
- 6:44Speaker 1: when the label folds. It happens when someone gets fired. Yep.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Then you get somebody who doesn't your president comes in.
- 6:50Speaker 1: They didn't a sign you, they don't believe in you.
- 6:52Speaker 1: They just following the numbers, the analytics. So that's kind
- 6:54Speaker 1: of what happened to me in that space. And you know,
- 6:57Speaker 1: stuff like that has happened to a lot of artists
- 6:59Speaker 1: for sure, and they and a lot of them haven't
- 7:01Speaker 1: recovered XV. You know XV somebody who signed with Warner
- 7:05Speaker 1: and just they didn't know what the fuck to do
- 7:08Speaker 1: with him, and he was an alien like actually was
- 7:10Speaker 1: like Kendrick Lamar level talent, insane, insane, huge support system
- 7:16Speaker 1: and fan base. But like you said, once you get
- 7:19Speaker 1: into that system, then move. They were still moving by
- 7:22Speaker 1: the archaic rules, you know, get a radio record, do
- 7:25Speaker 1: some promo, whereas the Internet was just coming along. Spotify
- 7:29Speaker 1: hadn't started yet, Spotify and it was SoundCloud was around
- 7:34Speaker 1: that time when he got his deal. So like things,
- 7:36Speaker 1: you know, the labels didn't know what to do. The
- 7:38Speaker 1: blogs were in charge at the time, so it was
- 7:40Speaker 1: tough for them to figure out how to make money
- 7:42Speaker 1: off of a world where it's post Napster presently, z
- 7:48Speaker 1: Share and hulk Share, media Fire, Media Fire, and then
- 7:52Speaker 1: we're right before SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple Music and things like that. Yeah,
- 7:56Speaker 1: that's crazy because like like when you think about that
- 7:58Speaker 1: cover is like, you know, so like I was a
- 8:01Speaker 1: huge Charles I mean, I was a huge fan of Bob.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Bob obviously went on to have hit records and hit records,
- 8:05Speaker 1: but it also took a while. Yeah, it took them
- 8:08Speaker 1: two years. Yeah, you know, like even I even think
- 8:11Speaker 1: about like Coal, like Cole was the year after or
- 8:13Speaker 1: two years later. Cole was the year after he was
- 8:16Speaker 1: on the twenty ten cover. I think it like even Coal,
- 8:19Speaker 1: like they didn't know what to do with Call Forever
- 8:21Speaker 1: he popped in twenty twelve. Yeah, Like it was like, bro,
- 8:23Speaker 1: like it was a weird error for the industry because,
- 8:26Speaker 1: like you said, like it's how do you monetize this
- 8:28Speaker 1: internet buzz if there isn't a hit record because the
- 8:31Speaker 1: labels now, as long as it's streams, it doesn't matter
- 8:34Speaker 1: if it's played on the radio. It took them ten
- 8:37Speaker 1: years to figure it out. Yeah, because Napsta pops up
- 8:40Speaker 1: two oh three, and you know, then you have whatever else,
- 8:46Speaker 1: uh streaming sites that was out around that time. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: forgot what the other ones were. But then and then
- 8:51Speaker 1: it just kept moving moving forward, moving forward, YouTube five,
- 8:54Speaker 1: you know, MySpace, Twitter, everything just started. So the labels
- 9:00Speaker 1: were confused. You know, when I first joined Twitter, nobody
- 9:03Speaker 1: was on Twitter, right, there was no labels on Twitter.
- 9:06Speaker 1: There was no news sits on Twitter, there was nobody
- 9:08Speaker 1: on Twitter. So once they started to get the hang
- 9:12Speaker 1: of it, then they started to put their minds together
- 9:15Speaker 1: and it was like, we're gonna we're gonna take over
- 9:16Speaker 1: by doing this, doing this, doing that, and now this
- 9:19Speaker 1: the streaming services. It's back to the way it was.
- 9:23Speaker 1: They're in control again. Yeah, it's almost like Carl Cherry's
- 9:26Speaker 1: like the new sk kind of right, or like you know,
- 9:31Speaker 1: because you would think, like I mean I saw with
- 9:33Speaker 1: my own eyes, like if you could get Shake or
- 9:35Speaker 1: Meg to post it your ship on two dope boys,
- 9:38Speaker 1: you like it literally, like will change your life, life changing. Yeah,
- 9:43Speaker 1: if ESK posted, you forget about it over like at that.
- 9:45Speaker 1: At that in the real like early stages. Not Right
- 9:48Speaker 1: was the blog period. It was not right and then
- 9:51Speaker 1: you know, everyone else was coming up. But not Right
- 9:53Speaker 1: was like the standard. Like if if you got on
- 9:55Speaker 1: not Right, it was like, oh shit, this I got it.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I listened to everything. I'm not right. I was on
- 9:59Speaker 1: that right three times a week. That's crazy. Every week
- 10:03Speaker 1: for the year, I was on it three times a week. Yeah,
- 10:05Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, it's I missed the era of music
- 10:08Speaker 1: because it did feel like those guys had like legitimate
- 10:12Speaker 1: love for quality, and I think that the blog era.
- 10:19Speaker 1: At least the gatekeepers, in my opinion, were the best
- 10:23Speaker 1: gatekeepers we've ever had because they were the most tuned
- 10:26Speaker 1: in and they you know, like I'm real. Over the
- 10:30Speaker 1: years was really tight with Shake and Mac and those guys,
- 10:32Speaker 1: and like they like genuinely like if they didn't like
- 10:35Speaker 1: your music, they didn't post it. Yeah, And that was
- 10:38Speaker 1: that's different, right, because now you're gonna get on a
- 10:42Speaker 1: playlist because it's an algorithm or because like you know,
- 10:46Speaker 1: even if the song sucks, if you're the bigger name
- 10:48Speaker 1: or you got you're on the A label, you're getting
- 10:49Speaker 1: on rap caviar, even if someone who's running that playlist
- 10:53Speaker 1: is like this shit is ass as to where back then,
- 10:56Speaker 1: I feel like at least the gatekeepers were like hip
- 10:59Speaker 1: hop no herds, and they wrote about it it was
- 11:02Speaker 1: over and they had a post where they typed and
- 11:04Speaker 1: it was like yo, like they took pride to like
- 11:06Speaker 1: help building people's careers like I owe my careers and
- 11:10Speaker 1: right and all of the blogs on Smash to Boys,
- 11:13Speaker 1: even World Star hip Hop, you know, start they would
- 11:16Speaker 1: when they first were starting out, you know, they were
- 11:18Speaker 1: underneath not right, and then you know, the fights helped them,
- 11:21Speaker 1: But a lot of times it was the music, my
- 11:23Speaker 1: freestyles that would go up there. It would help build
- 11:26Speaker 1: up the site, you know. So you know a lot
- 11:28Speaker 1: of these places was just starting out, even hip Hop
- 11:31Speaker 1: d X all hip hop, they were just starting out.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Do you remember the forum days before the blogs hip
- 11:36Speaker 1: hop game, hip hop game, there was a realist nwords
- 11:40Speaker 1: dot com. I used to download all my mixtapes off
- 11:42Speaker 1: of Slums of Boxton Love. Oh my gosh. You know
- 11:47Speaker 1: back then Jay Electronica he would post links and then
- 11:49Speaker 1: delete them. Oh really, he would go into these chatrooms,
- 11:53Speaker 1: into these forums, post a link to like Act one
- 11:56Speaker 1: or Act two and then delete it. That's crazy. Yeah,
- 11:59Speaker 1: those those are those That's how I got my name.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I would illegally download mixtapes and albums from those forums
- 12:07Speaker 1: and then go to the swat meet when I was
- 12:08Speaker 1: sixteen and sling them bitches. Wow. Yeah. I used to
- 12:13Speaker 1: sell mixtapes in bootleg albums when I was in high school.
- 12:15Speaker 1: That's crazy. Hey, what up man? We gotta interrupt the
- 12:17Speaker 1: interview real quick to tell you about our family at

- 13:26Speaker 1: just think, like now it's kind of it's kind of
- 13:28Speaker 1: like somewhere in the middle unfortunately, like you know, like
- 13:32Speaker 1: there's not as many gatekeepers, right, there's only a few. Yeah,
- 13:36Speaker 1: and you know, I mean I consider call Churry a gatekeeper. Yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 1: And Carl's super tuned in. He's super He is a
- 13:42Speaker 1: hip hop fanatic, you know, like Carl's he was a
- 13:45Speaker 1: part of the double XLF Freshman cover. Yeah, Carl's a
- 13:48Speaker 1: fucking one of the good guys, I say, you know,
- 13:52Speaker 1: and Carl's taking chances on a lot of artists too.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Like there's a kid out of La Na Nana that's
- 13:57Speaker 1: incredible that like doesn't even have ten thousand followers, but
- 13:59Speaker 1: he's a fucking incredible artist. Grip, who just simon Shady Grip.
- 14:04Speaker 1: That's my boy. I love Grip. You know. I found
- 14:05Speaker 1: out about Grip. I had a show in Nebraska and
- 14:08Speaker 1: the promoter he just kept playing Grip and I'm like,
- 14:10Speaker 1: who is this guy? This guy is incredible? So yes,
- 14:12Speaker 1: guy named Grip Man, he's dope. I DM Grip immediately
- 14:15Speaker 1: He's fired. I didn't even know he was signing. He
- 14:17Speaker 1: got album called Snubnose from twenty nineteen. That's Fire. I
- 14:21Speaker 1: think that was the album I was listening to. He
- 14:23Speaker 1: is incredible, and you know I hit him up like, yo, man,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I think you're dope. Would love to work monf late
- 14:28Speaker 1: to sign of Shady Wow, kind of break down the
- 14:32Speaker 1: fake internet altercations. Obviously, you and Lup are real close, right,
- 14:36Speaker 1: We're like, yeah, that's my bro. You guys like we're
- 14:38Speaker 1: kind of trolling each other for a while. I don't
- 14:40Speaker 1: know if he was trolling each other. I think it
- 14:42Speaker 1: was one of those things where we was just kind
- 14:44Speaker 1: of having conversations about hip hop, you know, just trying
- 14:47Speaker 1: to you know, there was this talk about who's the best,
- 14:50Speaker 1: and you know, I was just trying to conduct the interview.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I wasn't. I actually think Loop a Fiasco like lyrically
- 14:57Speaker 1: as like a just pure rapper. He's he might be
- 15:00Speaker 1: like top five to ten. Ever I'm not talking about
- 15:04Speaker 1: like and by the way, he's got classic projects, yes,
- 15:08Speaker 1: but like, if we're just talking about putting you in
- 15:10Speaker 1: a room, here's a pad of paper, go crazy. I'm
- 15:14Speaker 1: not sure there's many people in the history of this
- 15:16Speaker 1: planet that can hang with Lupe Fiasco. I say that
- 15:19Speaker 1: with all due respects. I agree. I agree he's one
- 15:22Speaker 1: of the greats. He's my biggest what if. Yeah, like
- 15:26Speaker 1: Lupe to me should be on the like like when
- 15:28Speaker 1: I think of like Loope's trajectory and like how Atlanta
- 15:31Speaker 1: kind of stalled them, I feel like Atlantic stalled him out,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and I feel like at some point in time he
- 15:35Speaker 1: might have maybe just lost not necessarily lost passion for
- 15:37Speaker 1: the hip hop like as an art form, but just
- 15:40Speaker 1: for the industry. Yeah, I mean, I think I just
- 15:43Speaker 1: think he wanted to do what he wanted to do,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and I think Atlantic saw the success of Superstar, right,
- 15:50Speaker 1: we need more of that, We need more of that.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And he's like, bro, I'm an artist. I want to
- 15:54Speaker 1: do this, And then Lasers comes out and it's like
- 15:57Speaker 1: shout out to my guy Poube, you know. But at
- 15:59Speaker 1: the time it was going by MDMA. But like there's
- 16:01Speaker 1: like a lot of these like commercial like aren't like
- 16:03Speaker 1: weird R and B hooks that just didn't feel right.
- 16:06Speaker 1: But it's like, yeah, that's not why we came here
- 16:07Speaker 1: in the first place. It's not why Lupe has got
- 16:09Speaker 1: a fucking cult following. They're not here for that ship yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 1: I mean they gave him his biggest records though, I
- 16:14Speaker 1: think you know, I mean obviously, Yeah, it's like you said,
- 16:17Speaker 1: the record with which Tray was huge, Trey record was
- 16:20Speaker 1: nuts and even you know, the Show goes On. I
- 16:22Speaker 1: think that might was that on that album. Yeah, show
- 16:24Speaker 1: goes On, I think huge. I think that might that
- 16:27Speaker 1: is either between that or Superstar might be the biggest,
- 16:29Speaker 1: right show. Yeah, it's one of those two. You know,
- 16:31Speaker 1: those are the two biggest records. So you know, I
- 16:34Speaker 1: think he has a love and hate relationship with Lasers,
- 16:37Speaker 1: but you know he's still top five tops man. Listen.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I was I don't know, was it twenty fifteen that
- 16:42Speaker 1: Murals they saw Murals came out and he was rapping
- 16:44Speaker 1: for nine minutes straight and it was just and I
- 16:47Speaker 1: just remember like saying, anybody who thinks Lupe fell off,
- 16:49Speaker 1: just press play on that Nels and it's like, what
- 16:53Speaker 1: the fuck? Like that Smithsonian rep right there? Yeah, it's crazy, man.
- 16:57Speaker 1: But uh, you have a joint project out with Blue. Yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 1: that's my brother. Shout out to Blue. Somebody else you
- 17:03Speaker 1: know his album is that? That first album with Exile
- 17:05Speaker 1: was another moment and like Below the Heavens is got
- 17:08Speaker 1: backpack you know moment, It was like a moment in
- 17:13Speaker 1: backpack history. Yeah, that boom back, Like wow, shit, Like
- 17:17Speaker 1: he was right. I want to say he was right
- 17:19Speaker 1: before the blog era because that dropped in seven, So
- 17:23Speaker 1: he was right before yeah, because it came out when
- 17:25Speaker 1: I was in high school. Yeah, and that project is
- 17:28Speaker 1: I'm a fan of that project. Yeah. So you guys
- 17:31Speaker 1: originally met at the cover shoot. We actually met. We
- 17:35Speaker 1: had a show together at Rock the Bells. Was it
- 17:38Speaker 1: Rock the Bells? No, it was the Booklyn Hip Hop Fest.
- 17:41Speaker 1: We had a show together and that's what we first met,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and then we met again at the cover. So you
- 17:46Speaker 1: guys have obviously kept rapport throughout the years, and now
- 17:48Speaker 1: you know what was this? What was the Whose idea
- 17:51Speaker 1: was it to do a project together? It was mine.
- 17:53Speaker 1: We were on tour in twenty eighteen and I was like, yo,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I think we should do a project while we were
- 17:56Speaker 1: in the car and he was like, yep, that's do it.
- 18:00Speaker 1: And I was like all right, so I went. You know,
- 18:02Speaker 1: we both was reaching out to different producers to see
- 18:04Speaker 1: who could do the whole thing, and we settled on Knots.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Nots is a legend and nots was like, yeah, let's
- 18:10Speaker 1: do it. So, you know, we just kind of went
- 18:12Speaker 1: and picked beats and we put this project together. It
- 18:15Speaker 1: was crazy. It's crazy. It's called the narrative. How is it? Uh?
- 18:20Speaker 1: Because you know, when you're working on solo shit, you
- 18:22Speaker 1: really only have to worry about like your vision, right.
- 18:26Speaker 1: It is not you know, you know what your perspective
- 18:29Speaker 1: is is you know how to get your point across?
- 18:31Speaker 1: How is the dynamic changing when you have when you
- 18:34Speaker 1: bring a whole nother prolific rapper to the table and
- 18:37Speaker 1: you guys have to collaborate on like these things. For
- 18:39Speaker 1: the most part, I'm a pretty easy going m see
- 18:42Speaker 1: if he a lot of times Blue would have concepts
- 18:45Speaker 1: and I'd be like okay, and I was just run
- 18:46Speaker 1: with it. And there were times when you know, I
- 18:48Speaker 1: would put I put like maybe the two of the
- 18:51Speaker 1: songs together and he was like, okay, cool. I mean,
- 18:54Speaker 1: once you have two people that don't have big egos
- 18:56Speaker 1: that come together, they're both just trying to make sure
- 18:58Speaker 1: that the project just comes to other pretty well. It
- 19:00Speaker 1: was very easy project for us to put together. It
- 19:03Speaker 1: took forever to come out because of the features we
- 19:05Speaker 1: were waiting a long time for the features to come.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Who was on the album? We got coded a friend
- 19:08Speaker 1: shout out to Cota. We got a tank uh, Tabianna
- 19:12Speaker 1: Bell from Tanking the Bangers. We have Si the Kid
- 19:15Speaker 1: on There's Dorof is on there, Fishawn is on there. Oswyn,
- 19:21Speaker 1: Benjamin Oswyn is my guy. My producer Tony Chuck and
- 19:25Speaker 1: him are doing a whole project together. Yeah. It's funny
- 19:29Speaker 1: because he was going to do, uh, he was going
- 19:31Speaker 1: to do a High on Life freestyle. I listen. So
- 19:37Speaker 1: he calls me while I'm in New York and he's like, yo, Mickey,
- 19:40Speaker 1: I got to do a High on Life freestyle. And
- 19:42Speaker 1: I was like, I got to do a bootleg cav freestyle.
- 19:45Speaker 1: But I haven't written anything yet, and he was like,
- 19:48Speaker 1: y I'm I'm about to get on the flight. I said,
- 19:49Speaker 1: I when you land my verse would be done. So
- 19:52Speaker 1: when he landed, I called him versus done and we
- 19:55Speaker 1: both split our verses and he was like, y'all tell
- 19:57Speaker 1: bootglet cad myself up because he's he's he's on my
- 19:59Speaker 1: bucket list. No, he's coming up here. Yeah, he was like, yo,
- 20:02Speaker 1: he's on my bucket list. I said, yeah, Kevin is
- 20:03Speaker 1: on my bucket. He lives in my hometown. He's out,
- 20:05Speaker 1: He's in Phoenix now, Yeah, he's in my hometown. Yeah Yeah,
- 20:08Speaker 1: Osmind's gonna gonna have a nice career. He's incredible, he
- 20:11Speaker 1: can do a lot, he can see it rap, He's
- 20:13Speaker 1: very I mean, I don't think like he's had the
- 20:15Speaker 1: moment where we can say he's slept on yet. But
- 20:19Speaker 1: you know, I think he's bubbling and when his moment comes,
- 20:22Speaker 1: it'll be soon, it'll be big. It's gonna it's it's
- 20:24Speaker 1: on the way. I believe it's on the way. I
- 20:26Speaker 1: think he you know, he just has to, you know,
- 20:28Speaker 1: figure it out. Once he figures it out, he's out
- 20:30Speaker 1: of here. Yeah. He's got a lot of talent. Yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 1: that's dope. So with this album, do you feel like
- 20:37Speaker 1: you know, because I do feel like, was there a
- 20:40Speaker 1: point in time where you kind of just stepped away
- 20:41Speaker 1: from music? Yeah? I quit music in twenty thirteen at
- 20:44Speaker 1: the end of twenty thirteen. And was that like a
- 20:46Speaker 1: hard thing for you to do? Man? Because I know,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you know, I know this industry will spit you up,
- 20:51Speaker 1: chew you up, and spit you out. Man. It was
- 20:52Speaker 1: too much that was going on. You know, I left RCA.
- 20:58Speaker 1: It just wasn't it's a shitty label and it's your priority.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Shout out to RCA, but God bless them, but yeah,
- 21:02Speaker 1: if you're not a priority, fuck they had d one
- 21:04Speaker 1: on RCA forever and didn't know what the fuck to do. Anyway,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I digress. I left, and then I lost a lot
- 21:09Speaker 1: of money in twenty thirteen not working and I had
- 21:13Speaker 1: full fourteen in my bank account, and I was like, man,
- 21:15Speaker 1: I'm not doing rap no more. And then twenty fourteen
- 21:18Speaker 1: comes around and I'm like I couldn't get a job
- 21:21Speaker 1: because I hadn't. I hadn't worked since two thousand and seven.
- 21:25Speaker 1: So by April, when I realized that I couldn't get
- 21:27Speaker 1: a job, I was like, well, I'm trying to wrap again.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And that just kind of was my resurgence, and I
- 21:31Speaker 1: went into my Plan B, which was just being this
- 21:33Speaker 1: MC that can just that just goes to just wraps,
- 21:37Speaker 1: and people just kind of, you know, it just continued
- 21:39Speaker 1: to snowball, snowball, snowball, snowball, snowball, And now you know,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I am I'm here, you know, yeah, I think what's
- 21:46Speaker 1: dope is like, now, uh, there is no middleman. If
- 21:50Speaker 1: you want to drop music, you just get a distro
- 21:53Speaker 1: kid account and you're on, and you're on, and you
- 21:56Speaker 1: can run up your indie catalog and even if you
- 21:58Speaker 1: have a thousand and fans that are your core fan base,
- 22:02Speaker 1: there's a way to monetize that and make a living
- 22:04Speaker 1: off of this rap shit. Yep. Everybody like you got
- 22:07Speaker 1: to be consistent and you have to like figure out
- 22:10Speaker 1: how to get to a point where you have enough
- 22:12Speaker 1: fans that are like die hard fans. It could be
- 22:14Speaker 1: five hundred kids. So if they support everything you do
- 22:18Speaker 1: and you're strategic and you're smart, you're gonna be able
- 22:20Speaker 1: to pay your bills off rap music. You know what
- 22:22Speaker 1: I'm saying. You turn five hundred into six hundred and
- 22:25Speaker 1: so on and so forth. And I think that's what's
- 22:27Speaker 1: kind of been dope about. Like somebody like, you know,
- 22:31Speaker 1: what Griselda has done is like they've just racked up
- 22:34Speaker 1: so much catalog and Russ, who took a page out
- 22:38Speaker 1: of your book, shout out to Russ. Russ is you know,
- 22:40Speaker 1: did did a one song a week for a year.
- 22:42Speaker 1: But it's like just betting on yourself knowing guess what,
- 22:46Speaker 1: not every record is going to be a hit. No,
- 22:49Speaker 1: it doesn't work like that. But it's okay because every
- 22:51Speaker 1: record someone's gonna listen to it, and it just commuticly
- 22:54Speaker 1: it's it all adds up, like it all builds up.
- 22:57Speaker 1: It all adds up, And I think that's what matters, right,
- 22:59Speaker 1: like being able to, you know, put out content that
- 23:04Speaker 1: your supporters really appreciate and they want to support you
- 23:08Speaker 1: because they feel like you're giving them the soundtracks and
- 23:10Speaker 1: not only your life but their life, and that matters
- 23:13Speaker 1: to them a lot. So you know that it also
- 23:16Speaker 1: puts you in a dope creative position because now you're
- 23:18Speaker 1: just giving people what they want, not with the people
- 23:20Speaker 1: on the fifty second floor once right, because they're all
- 23:23Speaker 1: about numbers and analytics. Like now, you guys, I'm Mickey facts.
- 23:25Speaker 1: People fuck with me because I could wrap my fucking
- 23:27Speaker 1: ass off. So let me give y'all some of that.
- 23:29Speaker 1: That's why. That's how I got here, That's how I
- 23:31Speaker 1: got here, and that's how we're going to stay here.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Yeah straight up, man. Well, look the album is out,
- 23:36Speaker 1: go support it. The narrative me Blue Knots, make sure
- 23:39Speaker 1: you guys go pick that out is crazy, yo, Go support.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Shout to Knots legend. He's from Virginia, right, Virginia, beach man.
- 23:45Speaker 1: I don't know what's in the world. He did a
- 23:46Speaker 1: whole album with Asher Roth. I believe that bucking crazy
- 23:50Speaker 1: and yeah yeah yea and me nas is that he's incredible. Yo.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Shout out to Virginia for producing Pharrell, Timblin and Knots
- 24:01Speaker 1: and Bink and Bink. Wow. I didn't know Bink was
- 24:05Speaker 1: from Virginia. He's from Virginia. Something about something in the
- 24:07Speaker 1: water in Virginia for producers. Boy, is Missy from there? Yeah?
- 24:12Speaker 1: Is she from Virginia? I don't know if Missy's from Virginia.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Think she is? She might be wa wit checking at
- 24:19Speaker 1: is Magoo from Virginia? I don't know if Hey the
- 24:24Speaker 1: first timer landa Macgo album. Finally, he's on DSP shot
- 24:26Speaker 1: out to the Empire. Uh yeah, crazy, she's a producer
- 24:31Speaker 1: to the clips, the clips, the clips, Chad Hugo, we
- 24:37Speaker 1: got we don't get enough, give enough love to chat
- 24:39Speaker 1: chat is man? Monster? Monster? All right? Well, look there's
- 24:43Speaker 1: gonna be another YouTube video where this guy's look wrapping
- 24:46Speaker 1: his ass off, blacking out. Let's go, yes, sir,
