- 1:55The director of track and field for Kent State University.
- 1:58One of my favorite trivia questions.
- 2:00We're going to get into that. Is that can State?
- 2:02I love it. Help me.
- 2:03Welcome the wise, the wonderful Nate Sanger Nate.
- 2:06How are you sir? Good, how are you guys doing
- 2:08man? Awesome.
- 2:10You know, the trivia question that Kent State is in, that's
- 2:12one of my favorite trivia questions ever, you know?
- 2:16I mean, it comes to Kent State. I don't know if it revolves
- 2:19around the, for dead in Ohio or the, oh, man, it's all positive.
- 2:24So I'm going to ask you the trivia question and then because
- 2:27there's there's multiple answer. So name, the school's name, the
- 2:30colleges that their mascot does not end in s.
- 2:37So you have a high o State Buckeyes.
- 2:39Right. That's the most popular.
- 2:40It always ends with. S right?
- 2:42The Auburn. Tigers Troy Trojans.
- 2:44What are the? There's there's actually quite a
- 2:46bit but which ones can you think of that actually don't end with
- 2:49this? Oh my gosh, that hmm.
- 2:58Yeah, you're right because you got the Longhorns for the
- 3:00Seminoles. Everything is SS Tar Heels.
- 3:04She's what skin States. Are we have a golden flash?
- 3:13There it is. There's one.
- 3:14That's what I love about. Kent State.
- 3:15You're the golden can't stay golden flash.
- 3:17You don't end with this. Yeah.
- 3:19That having it university. University of Illinois, the
- 3:22fighting Illini. Okay.
- 3:25Yeah. All right.
- 3:26I give you a couple hints. Come on.
- 3:27You got it. I know.
- 3:28You can think of at least one. There's some no no trick
- 3:35questions and these are some big schools, you know.
- 3:37This isn't like you know finding some small junior college that I
- 3:41used to work at in Kansas like these are big name schools that
- 3:44have mascots that don't end or you know if it'd be mascot or
- 3:47whatever it is but don't end with this you can tie.
- 3:51So could care less about mascots.
- 3:53My favorite thing in the world like my so over they have a
- 3:58mascot I wouldn't even know what it is.
- 4:00And I'll give you one hint, then I'll know, then I'll name a few
- 4:04of them because other people right now are listening yelling
- 4:07out there. Their guesses right now.
- 4:12All right, I'll give you a hint. This school is not in a
- 4:15conference, but kind of is in a conference.
- 4:18But it's not in a conference big school.
- 4:22Well, I mean Notre. Dame, bam Fighting Irish there.
- 4:24You got it. Yeah, there you go.
- 4:26Alright, some others that I've learned the Stanford Stanford
- 4:29Cardinal I was gonna say that too, but they're a tree so they
- 4:32but that's about it. But do you even call that it,
- 4:35like a sycamore tree or something?
- 4:37Yeah, I don't know what that scary tree is, by the way, I
- 4:39don't know, like I was thinking about Stanford is a tree, that's
- 4:43not end of the desk, but they don't walk around in their
- 4:45games. Either.
- 4:46Right? Right.
- 4:46But Stanford Cardinal, that's their logo mascot whatever.
- 4:50They want to call it. Right?
- 4:51To Lane to Lane, is the Green. Wave the wave.
- 4:56Right? I know that.
- 4:56Yeah. Not waves just wave up.
- 4:59Tulsa is oddly the golden hurricane.
- 5:02There's never been a hurricane in Tulsa Oklahoma.
- 5:04But for some reason they're the golden hurricane.
- 5:07See I want to know that all. Yeah that one's a little.
- 5:10That's why I'm saying it, you know, with Notre Dame and okay
- 5:13here you know, Notre Dame's big, here's another big one Alabama.
- 5:17Oh yeah, Roll Tide. Crimson Tide.
- 5:21Yeah. Yeah, that's right.
- 5:23And then you have a bunch up in the Northeast, like the Harvard
- 5:26crimson and the I think Brown is brown brown or something like
- 5:30that, which is odd, but they're smarter than me, so I can't
- 5:33figure it out. Okay.
- 5:35Finger, we're five minutes in and people are like, that's
- 5:37awesome. What does this have to do with
- 5:39today's guests? It does though, right?
- 5:41Member because golden flash, that's why I thought about this
- 5:43at Kent State is one of those part of the trivia questions.
- 5:46So Nate, you know again thank you for being here today.
- 5:48Thank you for Let me have a trivia question with you.
- 5:52I got to start coming up with trivia questions for guess.
- 5:54That'll be a lot of fun. It'll be, it'll be stuff that I
- 5:57have no idea of the house. All just I'll just be wrong all
- 6:00the time, but Nate. So you know what we wanted to
- 6:03talk about today? First of all, let's openly
- 6:06publicly give you your flowers. Your do your praise
- 6:10congratulations man. You have just recently been
- 6:12named the director of track and field at Kent State.
- 6:16That's no small thing because you're following, I'll say a
- 6:19legend. I'll have to tell the story in
- 6:22today's podcast of how Bill Austin, changed my life coaching
- 6:24wise, and then there for the rest of my life.
- 6:26So you're, you know, you're following not a small guy here
- 6:30and now you're the the directory, the big man, no
- 6:32longer just, that's air quotes the throws coach your capital T
- 6:37capital h, capital e, you're the coach.
- 6:40How's it feel to finally be in the, I don't see the big boy
- 6:43chair. But the the bigger chair, Big
- 6:47Boy, chair. You know, I guess there's
- 6:50awkward. As it sounds, I mean.
- 6:54I mean I guess it's exciting because I get I get my own
- 6:58Direction. So you know being a throws
- 7:00coach, we know what kind of we want to do or how we would
- 7:03proceed, but you don't necessarily have that power to
- 7:06proceed as being an assistant coach.
- 7:08So high, you just kind of tuck things down here.
- 7:10Got you talk things down away but having the ability to now
- 7:14create your own staff, Do Your Own Thing.
- 7:17Have your Meats? Yeah I mean I think that
- 7:20empowers it empowers you a little bit more.
- 7:22I don't know if I was like Oh my gosh, this is so crazy.
- 7:25It's not like, I grew up wanting to be a track and field coach,
- 7:27or even a head coach. So it's like here's the next
- 7:29step. Let's go win.
- 7:31The next 20 Conference champions our own, you know, the goal is
- 7:34to be top 25 in the country type thing.
- 7:36So, I love it. Well, let's put a pin in that
- 7:38because I do, I love to explore, always whenever someone becomes
- 7:41a first time head coach, which I actually don't know.
- 7:44I'm guessing that's, that's for you will find out here in a
- 7:46little bit. But also, I think something
- 7:48unique here and it probably shouldn't be unique in my, maybe
- 7:52my opinion. I do want to explore as we go
- 7:55through the Journey. What it's like for a throws
- 7:58coach to be a head coach. And I say that because I could
- 8:01probably name about 10. I'll stuff of my head but not
- 8:04100, but I also know. Throws coaches pretty intimately
- 8:08as far as resourcefulness coaching wise time management.
- 8:13I mean, I just don't know how you can be a throws coach with
- 8:16the the different types of events and quantities of numbers
- 8:19of athletes that you typically have and not have some really
- 8:23strong. On head-coaching.
- 8:27Positives already built into you.
- 8:29So I want to explore that as we get to it.
- 8:30But let's kind of Kickback, you talked about, you know, the goal
- 8:32was never, maybe even to be a track coach or maybe even being
- 8:35a director. Where does, you know, at some
- 8:37point coaching, if you are an athlete went from something that
- 8:41happens to you, a coach would pour into you as an athlete and
- 8:46somewhere in your mind, at some point, it had to flip and be
- 8:49like, oh, wait a minute, I actually could be a truck like,
- 8:52this could be my profession, I don't have to be an accountant,
- 8:55or a doctor, or a lawyer. I actually Be a track coach,
- 8:58where does coaching come into you and your life?
- 9:03I mean, that goes way back to be a hunter sauce.
- 9:06Yeah, I mean there's not a lot of mise what I was 12 years old.
- 9:12I decided that's what I want to do is go to the Olympics.
- 9:14So it was, this has been this. I have a 12 year old now and
- 9:20he's very athletic. He does his thing but no one in
- 9:23my family had 12 15 and 17 is decided.
- 9:26This is what they were going to do at 12 years old.
- 9:28I knew I was going to the Olympics.
- 9:29I had my goal set. I was, I was gonna throw the
- 9:32discus. It was my whole.
- 9:34So, I've, I've been in this mentally for a long time and
- 9:38then you get to a point when I was in high school.
- 9:42I'm from Montana by the way, and you would think Montana did a
- 9:45very big high school. But I end up going to a bigger
- 9:48High School, my Junior and Senior year and they had like,
- 9:5134 guy throwers in my throws coach would take 17 and go
- 9:56through the shot, put he would give me the 17.
- 9:58And so I was coaching the 17, other discus, thrower, so we
- 10:01kind of split, half and half Laughs and I would help out the
- 10:04discus throwers while he was down the shot.
- 10:05Put and then he would come back and then he would help me after
- 10:08practice. Got want kind of wound down and
- 10:11there wasn't too many people out there than he would coach me.
- 10:13So, I was coaching in high school already a little bit and
- 10:16then I got to college and I would just kind of help out.
- 10:19And then so I've been coaching honestly myself or somebody else
- 10:24from what I was super young. It's just kind of instilled in
- 10:27me and my, my dad was a teacher. My mom was a teacher.
- 10:30My sister is a teacher, my grandpa was a Sir we come from a
- 10:34family of kind of teaching anyway so I don't know if it's
- 10:37just part of who I was as I grew up or who I am so it maybe isn't
- 10:43the most uncommon thing to hear about kind of that player /
- 10:47coach but it might be uncommon that it was a 14, 15, 16 17,
- 10:52year-old a high schooler and you said really early 12 years old.
- 10:57You're like oh yeah. I'm like this is my mission.
- 10:59I'm going to the Olympics in The discus by the way.
- 11:02Yeah, that's not uncommon for a twelve-year-old.
- 11:05Say, I'm going to be go to the NFL or Major League Baseball,
- 11:08but rarely, unfortunately, do we have the kid that says, oh yeah,
- 11:11in The discus on. That's where I'm going, right?
- 11:15How did you get to that point though?
- 11:16Because you didn't just as a 12 year old and Coach looked at and
- 11:19said, oh yeah, you're basically my assistant coach and then I'll
- 11:21help you after. How did that evolve to where you
- 11:23were kind of this student-athlete coach as a high
- 11:25schooler? Well I guess my so my dad was a
- 11:31is a well I guess it was because he retired, but he was a junior
- 11:34high track and field coach. And so you know, in junior high
- 11:37as six, seventh grade, they would have us, try the mile and
- 11:41the high jump, and the Bold and this T, all these different
- 11:44events that you're trying, because they don't know where
- 11:45they're going to push you, because you're young and you're
- 11:46developing, but he my dad was the throws coach.
- 11:49So he would go to the shop, but the shock foot and then we had
- 11:52another discus coach, but I was like no joke when I was in.
- 11:56Eighth-grade I wrestled, I wrestled in seventh grade.
- 12:00I wrestled 98 pounds in 8th grade, I wrestled at 105, so I
- 12:03was Tiny. So I, I liked being aggressive.
- 12:07I was an Angry Kid. I had a lot of frustration as a
- 12:10kid. So the shot was throwing events,
- 12:12actually fit me very well. I can get a little bit of
- 12:14aggressive, let that out. But I sucked in the shot put
- 12:17because I was 100 pounds, right? Soaking wet discus, though, you
- 12:22can get away with being kind of technical along and more of a
- 12:26smooth. If you can kind of smooth, those
- 12:28techniques out, you can get away if thrown relatively far or
- 12:31further and not having to have that muscle tissue behind you
- 12:35the shop. Or so, I always found myself
- 12:37over the discus ring a lot and just it was it was fun.
- 12:41Having those coaches got to help me out.
- 12:42I had, I had a junior hot or a church right beside our Junior,
- 12:49High that I end up throwing the discus right through their
- 12:51church window at one time. And just just small memories
- 12:54that you keep you were like a young kid and then, Eli and get
- 12:57that John Powell discus video and I would watch that like a
- 13:0030-minute thing. I'd probably watch it two or
- 13:01three times a night. So I was 13, 14 years old and I
- 13:04just put it on repeat and repeat rewind, rewind rewind, just kind
- 13:07of dig in all this stuff and I the Mac Wilkins, discus video
- 13:10and being in Montana, I guess I didn't have a ton to do so when
- 13:15you're kind of bored, well, you found something to do, let's
- 13:18just do the best, you could do at it.
- 13:19And that just tended to be athletic /, discus, I love that
- 13:23dedication of watching the film because back then, you know,
- 13:25we're not that old, but We certainly didn't have YouTube
- 13:28back then, so we were watching those videos over and over and
- 13:31over and over and over. Again, you mentioned, you
- 13:36mentioned, Mom, Dad, cousins brought.
- 13:38Everybody was a teacher as you were going through high school
- 13:41and started looking towards the college side.
- 13:43Was it kind of like, I'm going to be a teacher or what did you
- 13:46think about career-wise at this point?
- 13:48Yeah, so that's the other and eventually getting reptiles, but
- 13:53the other, the other part of I'm artistic.
- 13:55So even as the Coach right now. I, I mean, obviously we coach,
- 14:00the physicality aspect that we have to know the central nervous
- 14:03system. You have to know the muscular
- 14:04system. You have to know how to develop
- 14:05an athlete, but I really see it as an artistic side as well.
- 14:09So there's an art flow, there's energy flow, there's movement
- 14:11flow. So, when I was in high school, I
- 14:14did a lot of art stuff. I I was I majored I did a PR tie
- 14:20wanted to college one and to be a free Land Art freelance
- 14:22artist. I was going to draw from medical
- 14:23books was kind of my back, my head go to the Olympics and draw
- 14:26from And then as you're kind of in the college system, you kind
- 14:31of like well Arts not going to necessarily cut it.
- 14:33So I went to Art education and then I was like, well and I
- 14:36started off actually my first year of college at University of
- 14:39Arizona. So but I end up transferring
- 14:42here after Mike. Mike Manor was my coach and I
- 14:44transferred up here after my first year because of finances
- 14:48and then I kind of just worked my way from art education and
- 14:51doing education. I got social studies
- 14:55comprehensive thing, like I I go where I could do.
- 14:58Geology geography. Psychology was kind of all
- 15:01comprehensive type thing. So, yeah, I ended up doing with
- 15:04patient even though that was, it wasn't my initial thought you
- 15:07say that you probably wouldn't believe this, but you're the
- 15:10second person that I know, I know someone who does that, who
- 15:14draws for medical books. No way.
- 15:17Yeah, she's in our small group for church and I was that was
- 15:20faster than I ever thought about like oh yeah, someone has to do
- 15:22that. And someone has to do that
- 15:23really well by the way, because it has to be, you know,
- 15:25anatomically correct and all that.
- 15:26The stuff and but I was like what a nice job like this is all
- 15:30she does is she draws all these different things for here at
- 15:33University of Illinois for medical books and such.
- 15:36So I I never thought I'd meet another person who's like, oh
- 15:38yeah. That's what I was going to do.
- 15:40Yeah, no, I knew when I was a very young age, he's funny talk
- 15:44about your church because that's where I use kind of kind of
- 15:47like, Hey where's God directed me and I loved art.
- 15:50So it was like, Hey I love the, the anatomy of the hand or the
- 15:54leg, or just all the details of the Muscular and structure or
- 15:57system. And so I like that fine detail
- 16:00work. They didn't really pan out as
- 16:03far as drawing stuff later on a life.
- 16:04But that's where my kind of reptiles that the artistic side
- 16:07of me is I love the color and the aspects of what I have
- 16:11downstairs in my basement, which is still a huge part of who I am
- 16:14as well. So I love that side, you know, I
- 16:17came up through coaching a Sprint hurdles and jumps.
- 16:20But early on, I mean, maybe the first college real job I had,
- 16:26Troy University, I found myself going to practice early just to
- 16:31watch The Hammer thrower specifically.
- 16:33I love the shot in The discus and the jab, but those seem more
- 16:37I'm gonna say violent, you know, especially shot like, you know,
- 16:39it's just one big push and then even Javelin Ron, and it's just,
- 16:43you know, stopping and trying to think everything into it, but
- 16:45the hammer seemed more that might be the right word for me
- 16:48to describe, as well as artistic, it feels like, oh,
- 16:50it's a dance. It's like a ballet in this
- 16:52really small circle by the way, right?
- 16:54And you do these amazing Circle Turns, and then there's a little
- 16:58bit. I know it's probably more
- 17:00violent than I'm going to say, but then there's like this
- 17:01little violence at the end to, you know, actually release the
- 17:04hammer, and then it goes. So stinking far in every stop.
- 17:08I've ever had Ball State Mississippi.
- 17:10I just love watching the hammer and it's just, so, it's just
- 17:13fascinating to me. I love love that event.
- 17:16You mentioned, you went to Arizona.
- 17:18So, I'm going to assume you got bigger than 105 pounds to go,
- 17:22throw the discus at Arizona under the great Mike Maynard, by
- 17:25the way. I mean, it's not like Slouch of
- 17:27a coach here. Picked you up.
- 17:28How did that progression going to Arizona with Mike?
- 17:33I was good. He like so every year, you know,
- 17:37when you're a young kid, you've got it.
- 17:39You got to try to put on that weight that's going to come no
- 17:41matter what but that was, I mean, that's part of the goal
- 17:43like liking the weight room or not or liking to eat or not.
- 17:45That was. So, I went from, I went to house
- 17:49115 pounds of freshmen and then 132 sophomore like 170 or 180 is
- 17:54a senior than went to Arizona were and got up to well, found
- 17:58by the time I got there, I was around that. 190 I got to about
- 18:012005. Then I think probably that.
- 18:06Yeah, 2005 that first year where I red shirt at University of
- 18:09Arizona which is an awesome year.
- 18:11It was just it came down to Dominique Johnson was a pole
- 18:15vaulter and he and up going 18:8 that year and they were going to
- 18:19kind of give me some scholarship but I think they end up giving
- 18:21him pretty much the full scholarship and I totally get it
- 18:24in 1880. He was going Olympics that year.
- 18:25I think in 96 I totally got so it was kind of like well shoot
- 18:30you I financial burden that and Maynard was awesome.
- 18:32He really Helped out and they've lost and call was there.
- 18:36Who knew the pagels and the pagans were had just taken a
- 18:40position up here at Kent State and Ramona was the, was the
- 18:44American record holder in chocolate.
- 18:45So yeah, through that kind of networking.
- 18:50I was able to get in contact with them and glue trick had
- 18:52called me. He was down North Carolina as
- 18:54well. So Brian was out North Carolina.
- 18:56I knew him. We slightly and I and I was told
- 19:00the pedals were up here, so it was kind of between in my head
- 19:02kind of like that. Boots down North Carolina or
- 19:05Kent State. And I just thought in my head
- 19:07like, hey, Ramona's, not wasn't a very big person and I'm not a
- 19:11very big person, so they kind of understand that smaller side of
- 19:14the technical framework, so I know.
- 19:17Yeah, I came up here in 96. So, yeah, I was an athlete here,
- 19:21you know, 97 98 99 and 2000. Yeah.
- 19:23And then I think it's an interesting point.
- 19:25You brought up there, I just had a conversation with a coach and
- 19:28we were talking about. Everybody's every coach has
- 19:31favorite subject right now the portal And he was lamenting
- 19:36about it, but also he, you know, admittedly said, I'm also
- 19:39gaining from it as well and this up.
- 19:41Yeah, I don't want to give away too much but so, you know, I get
- 19:48a lot of insight secrets and I blessed by that.
- 19:50So I don't give away any inside Secrets, but what we were
- 19:53talking about was some of the kids that were transferring,
- 19:56they not only in and out for this coach, but he was talking
- 20:00about, you know, some of these kids were on 50% scholarships
- 20:03and now, Going somewhere where they can get a full or 90 and
- 20:06he's like, he's like, I can't, I can't hardly fault them for
- 20:09that. You know, I don't want to saddle
- 20:11a kid with student debt and things like that.
- 20:13So I like that topic about, you know, Arizona and finances as
- 20:16like, okay, you know, I, you know, they had another teammate
- 20:19who did really, really well, so I kind of get it.
- 20:21But, you know what? I don't want to be saddled with
- 20:22a bunch of student debt either. So where do I go?
- 20:24Where can I go? Because at the end of the day,
- 20:26how many of us are going anywhere in our athleticism for
- 20:28track and field, any sport, by the way, that's going to go make
- 20:31money. So get that education and get
- 20:33it. His little debt as possible.
- 20:35I think that's a bigger subject that maybe we don't really talk
- 20:39about a lot of times, no sure. And I get that as well.
- 20:43I mean, he got that. That's, that's kind of hard
- 20:45aspect of track and field. You gotta understand that
- 20:48athletes are not only athletes, are there.
- 20:50People that humans are going to have you say that they're going
- 20:53to have at the at the end of their college career and they're
- 20:56not going to be going Olympics even if they wouldn't pick
- 20:58someone picks don't even pay really that much.
- 20:59I mean it just depends upon it it's a heart and passion as you
- 21:03like. Spawn where they want to end
- 21:05where they feel like they're they need to be.
- 21:07So I mean that to me is on a personal level so I have no
- 21:10problem with the transfer portal for the most part out there.
- 21:12I mean they've got to be where they fit best in suits them.
- 21:15Yeah and especially in track could feel I have a little less.
- 21:21I'm a little less concerned about our football and
- 21:23basketball players, because they're all on full rides.
- 21:25But when we only get 12 and a half-ish for the men and 18,
- 21:29which 18 seems like a lot, but it only seems like a lot because
- 21:32you're comparing it to the men who are 12.6.
- 21:35I mean, 18 is what we're talking about.
- 21:37What does it 82 for football? And it's, you know, 15 I think
- 21:40for basketball and the roster size of like 12, they don't give
- 21:43out all their full rights for. I'm sure I get those numbers
- 21:46mixed up, but but it's a farce when it comes to what our sport
- 21:50is in the Our ship level that supports it.
- 21:53So it's hard for me on the outside.
- 21:55Now again, I'm not coaching anymore so I also it's way
- 21:58easier for me to go. Yeah.
- 22:00Sorry finger that get transferred but they're going to
- 22:01get a full ride and it's like, yeah.
- 22:03But man, I was bacon on that kid.
- 22:05It's uh, it's my job. It's I get it.
- 22:07I get it. So you go to Kent State.
- 22:09Now, you don't seem to have a problem.
- 22:11You went from Montana to Arizona, that's a big distance
- 22:14and obviously in Montana and around that area.
- 22:16There's there were some probably great options for you for school
- 22:19and for throwing and now you go. Go all the way out to the
- 22:22Midwest, so you don't seem to have a problem going away from
- 22:24home and being kind of on your own and establishing your own
- 22:26roots. No, no.
- 22:29I mean it's not like I didn't like my family, my parents.
- 22:31But I mean, listen, I'm my own person.
- 22:33I that's just the way I am to this day.
- 22:35Even with my fan. Like I am who I am.
- 22:38I got I'm not tied in or down anywhere.
- 22:40It doesn't feel like I mean, essentially this and you had
- 22:44mentioned but like a home Bible group and that's a big thing and
- 22:47maybe we'll get to that later but that's essentially in who I
- 22:51am. Like Christ can lead and direct
- 22:52it where he wants me to go and that's how I felt like I was
- 22:56called down to University Arizona because Maynard and I
- 22:58like that warm weather atmosphere, the ability to be
- 23:01able to train outside year-round and then you know what, things
- 23:05didn't quite pan out there. But obviously, if we're, if you
- 23:09kind of understand how God works in his sovereignty, he puts you
- 23:12in a situation because he's going to move it over the
- 23:14situation. So lost in college, hook me up
- 23:16with the peg is up at Kent State and this is where this is where
- 23:20he's essentially had me make home for the last 26 years.
- 23:24So, yeah, I've no problem jumping around, that's for sure.
- 23:27Which that's in its Rarity to, right?
- 23:29I mean, I was just talking with Marlon break our guest last week
- 23:34about he's from Wayne State Nebraska and he's been at that
- 23:37Institution. For 20, these going on his 23rd,
- 23:39season is what we talked about. And, you know, that's, that's a
- 23:42rarity of coaches that are staying in one place, and I'm
- 23:46not by the way, no judgment. Like, if you're Because by the
- 23:50way, 10-year career, for coaching college, and I went to
- 23:52five different places. So I can't say anything about
- 23:54anybody jumping around. In fact, you know, if you listen
- 23:57to Two blue schexnayder is episode here on the podcast.
- 24:00He talks about, hey we pay our coaches.
- 24:01So little, if you can go somewhere, specially early in
- 24:04your career, that makes more money.
- 24:05Go. You got to, you got to take care
- 24:07yourself for one day to retire and take care of your family and
- 24:10things like that. So no judgment that but you
- 24:12would to Kent State and so is this where the story ends?
- 24:16Like you went to undergrad and then he became an assistant and
- 24:19now the director. What's this is?
- 24:21That it. Alright.
- 24:22Well, thank you. Whenever yes.
- 24:31Yes that's it. But so that maybe the story and
- 24:35I actually I love that story and to explore why?
- 24:38Because obviously and it could be you know God's plan, it could
- 24:41have been your plan. It could have been plans that
- 24:44you thought were going to go on but obviously you chose to stay
- 24:48as well. You're definitely not stuck at
- 24:50Kent State, you're choosing to be at Kent State.
- 24:53So what was it coming from undergrad?
- 24:55How did it? How did you know?
- 24:56There's a very Common way to go somewhere else as you graduate.
- 24:59So you go maybe be a ga or go somewhere else.
- 25:01How did you stay at Kent State after your undergrads?
- 25:05Well, I graduated and I had actually graduated.
- 25:08I like, I push back my student teaching because I was not going
- 25:11to student teach and do my my senior year, my that spring.
- 25:16So I said, listen, I'll student teach that fall.
- 25:19So I came back and I did, I student taught from the fall of
- 25:232002 2021, but they had Of things went down.
- 25:29Kind of weird, here, rainbolt. End up going Wichita State and a
- 25:33big crew would follow him. John wise, went down there.
- 25:36When mcraven, who was the distance coaching up saying?
- 25:38Got the head position up here and I was still here doing my
- 25:42student teaching. He was interviewing and fourth
- 25:44rows coaches, while I was still training and I wasn't even
- 25:46honestly, listen, dude, I wasn't thinking of being a throws
- 25:48coach. I was gonna get my teaching
- 25:50degree that I was going to go back to Montana work with my
- 25:52strength coach, get stronger. Boom, go to the Olympics.
- 25:55That was my goal. I was, I was right around. 95
- 25:58feet. If I put on some strength, you
- 26:00know, do I get to 205 or to 10? Where does that leave me?
- 26:04And, you know, it ended up being like, Wendell had interviewed
- 26:09some good candidates, likely submits a pica who was really
- 26:11good. She brought in probably three or
- 26:13four people and no one had end up taking the position, so I
- 26:16don't know if it was probably like October or November he was
- 26:19like, hey bastard, you would you ever thought about being a
- 26:21throws coach? I was like, hey, what do you
- 26:24want me to be here? Throws coaches.
- 26:25I'm sure you want to do your videos like Or whatever.
- 26:28It's like stepping his officer 15 minutes.
- 26:30He's like okay, you both ropes, coach like that.
- 26:32Awesome. That's all I remember.
- 26:35My resume was like worked at McDonald's.
- 26:37What I can feel Camp. I mean, dude, it was.
- 26:40So it was so sad. Your resume was I'm here.
- 26:43There you go. What else do we got to do here,
- 26:44Wendell? Right like, well yeah, I had no
- 26:48resume out of college. So what year was that because I
- 26:51was at Ball State O2 and O3 Seasons.
- 26:55Yeah, O2 and O3. I thought you were Wendell,
- 26:58definitely was the head coach during that time.
- 27:01May be built, was the coach for the first year, but Windows only
- 27:03one. I remember being at can see
- 27:04where you can State when I was at Ball State.
- 27:07So I got so I was here again in 2000 and that summer 2000 Summer
- 27:12that split what up like Rhett rainbow was out.
- 27:16Little got the job, I got the job but I couldn't get
- 27:19officially hired until I actually graduated.
- 27:22So I You waited that December. So, in the fall I was doing my
- 27:26student teaching from September to December, so I actually was
- 27:29officially on the payroll starting December.
- 27:34Yeah. Well it would have been January
- 27:362001. Yeah, but they didn't really
- 27:39actually pay me. I didn't find out until like
- 27:41August of that year. It was just like a stipend type
- 27:43thing so I officially officially was hired August like, August
- 27:481st 2021. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:53But I was here but I never lie. Skip the because, you know, I
- 27:56was I was an athlete from 97 98 99 2000 that I was coaching 2000
- 28:02all the way up, I had not. I like I was using the athlete
- 28:05then, boom, shares a coach. So yeah, that you know, speaking
- 28:08of the hammer like a talks about, you know, that was
- 28:10amazing right way. Exact Riley and Dale caliper.
- 28:13And I mean, just two guys in the MAC Conference battling.
- 28:18Now, you saw like a mini preview of Nationals at our conference
- 28:21me because those two guys would go to Nationals and did.
- 28:23He well, it was such a such a fun time and really taught me
- 28:27about the MAC Conference. You know, you can say all you
- 28:31want about power 5 and then, you know, the rest of the five or
- 28:33whatever G5, whatever, they call them that Matt conference.
- 28:37And I don't even want to say, I used to say especially in the
- 28:39throes but it is kind of all across jumps prints, you name,
- 28:42it distance etcetera. But during that time I just
- 28:45remember the throws being really, really stop strong, and
- 28:49having some really good throws coaches in that Conference
- 28:51during that time. Yeah, and they're still they're
- 28:55still out here. It gets a good bath house by.
- 28:57There's for sure there's no question.
- 28:59Absolutely. So you become the assistant
- 29:01coach what happens to the training aspect for you.
- 29:04That that was a pretty big part of your your goal set.
- 29:07Did that go away because coaching takes 400 hours a week
- 29:11or how did you kind of help or try to balance the two?
- 29:15Well, so on, I graduated, I still wanted to be top tier
- 29:21level athlete but You get to a point honestly, where, you know,
- 29:26you know, you've probably maximized that side of your
- 29:29body. I was 22 or 23 years old, but it
- 29:34was, it was a good transition. It was a weird transition, but I
- 29:37end up transitioning out on quite how it happened.
- 29:39But I transition to the jablin for a little bit, I actually
- 29:42picked up a javelin and threw it for now.
- 29:45I don't even know. I don't even want to call it
- 29:46competitive for two or three years, but it was, it was a
- 29:49stage were like, all right? Listen, I'm not a big guy.
- 29:53If I wasn't in the weight room I guess probably at 2230 225 to
- 29:57230. If I wasn't in the waiting for a
- 29:59week or two, I drop down to two 9:45.
- 30:00It was just I couldn't actually hold string.
- 30:03So that's why you don't see me. You didn't see me on any big
- 30:06stage by any stretch but the javelin was still something.
- 30:10Were, you know, technically have to wrap your mind around it and
- 30:15it was something I had. I enjoyed it was still throwing
- 30:17event but it wasn't something I'd done but it picking up for a
- 30:20year to was perfect for me because Cuz I know dorf, Vincent
- 30:25or was he was, he was our Javelin thrower here, which is a
- 30:28stud one of my, one of my best friend's dad at Wichita State.
- 30:31And he helped me kind of, hey this, what you got to do?
- 30:35Yeah, I would send film down. I'm down south every once in a
- 30:39while too. So that some of the coaches down
- 30:42there like hey, you know, give me an i, what do you think of
- 30:44this? And that actually was a big
- 30:45aspect of me. I knew the shotput, well, I knew
- 30:48the discus will Hammer I had thrown when I was in college,
- 30:51like 190 191. So I knew it but I didn't, you
- 30:54know, it was a whole growth aspect of it with John Smith and
- 30:57Judd, Logan. Those guys kind of mentored me
- 30:59through that position point, but the job and I had no clue.
- 31:01So throwing it myself competitively for a year or two
- 31:06it was perfect. Exactly.
- 31:07What I needed as far as getting into that coaching aspect as
- 31:10well. So I didn't think it was going
- 31:12to teach. Take me, the coaching aspect, I
- 31:14just want to do a competitively but yeah, I end up blowing out
- 31:18my shoulder and getting some cortisone in that after two
- 31:20years. It was like, you can't really
- 31:22transition from Um a muscular bet which is more discus Shopper
- 31:25writing into the into the javelin even though I enjoyed it
- 31:28for a hot minute. There's your good training back
- 31:33myself. There's your PSA right there.
- 31:35You notice he said okay so I had to get some cortisone like that
- 31:37was maybe not the great health-wise there on the
- 31:40shoulder. You know that that brings up a
- 31:43great point, you know, I don't believe I once had someone tell
- 31:47me, they were a volleyball coach and she told me because she had
- 31:51done the events. I was a Absolutely terrible
- 31:54hurdler and high school a tad bit better.
- 31:59Whatever, whatever. Terrible is, whatever just a tad
- 32:01bit. Better is half mile or I was
- 32:03garbage. I was just there's nothing a
- 32:05genetically. I was bankrupt coaching.
- 32:07I was bankrupt, probably motivation.
- 32:09I was just above bankrupt but I was able to take that passion of
- 32:14track and field and have a lot of great mentors and coaching
- 32:16education and became an okay Coach.
- 32:20She tried to tell me because I didn't do the events that I I
- 32:22couldn't be a good coach because she did the vents that she would
- 32:25be better. Now, obviously that's a farce
- 32:28right there. You you're thinking right now
- 32:29the 100 coaches that never did an event that coach it out of
- 32:33this was zoom and they're just amazing, right?
- 32:36What do you recommend? You talked about that that
- 32:38helped you throwing the javelin, which I can see where it would
- 32:41help. I don't think it would not help,
- 32:43right? But there's gonna be plenty of
- 32:45coaches and not specifically the throws here but because we have
- 32:48throws coach will take that as the example.
- 32:50How do you what's your recommendation?
- 32:53Coach who, you know, was a, let's do the reverse, let's say
- 32:56you got a coach, a throws Coach Guy, a guy who wants to be a
- 32:59coach and was a really, they don't have to be good.
- 33:01They were a javelin thrower and now they're responsible for
- 33:04coach and the shot, the disc the hammer and of course, the jab,
- 33:09what's your recommendation for someone who never threw the
- 33:11shot? The hammer, the disc to be able
- 33:13to coach it? Now see that is such a loaded
- 33:16question, though, because you have right-minded people and you
- 33:20have left mine at people, you have the mathematics.
- 33:22And you have the are mostly. This is the artistic side coming
- 33:25out, perfect. Okay, 100% me as an artist like
- 33:29I need even as I write my lifting workouts or as I
- 33:35administer, hey, you're going to throw heavy ball of in a light
- 33:37bulb, whatever you're going to do, right?
- 33:38I need to know how that feels with in my head and in my body
- 33:42before I administered to the athlete.
- 33:44So I know if I'm going to give him the Russian Cyclone the
- 33:47weight room. I know how it feels.
- 33:48I know the barrenness of it, I know how they're going to
- 33:50respond on a day-to-day basis and I know they're going to be
- 33:52pissed. Off wore down.
- 33:53But I know what to expect from them.
- 33:55I know if I expect to work on their plant leg, their block
- 33:58leg, how that's going to feel for the rest of the day or the
- 34:01rest of the week. So to me as a coach, I have to
- 34:05be able to step into their shoes.
- 34:06Physically. That's a big aspect of who I am
- 34:08in my head and how I'm going to program because I need to know
- 34:11what the response is. Is that athlete?
- 34:13Now it doesn't dictate how that that day is going to unfold if
- 34:17they come out that day, I'm like, hey, how's it going in the
- 34:19responses? You know, it's okay, I know,
- 34:22they either flunked Math test, they broke up with their
- 34:24girlfriend boyfriend. They didn't get the right food
- 34:26they needed. So that might adjust every day
- 34:28is an adjustment to what's going to happen in the Rings or in the
- 34:31weight room and you got to be on your toes for that adjustment.
- 34:34You can't take your program in, throw out the window for that
- 34:36day, you have to have you stopped to have that
- 34:37programmability but you lessen the numbers, you increase the
- 34:40numbers, everything's a slightly different.
- 34:42But for me as a coach, I have to know primarily how that response
- 34:49is going to come outside of their daily life.
- 34:51How is there a It's going to come from the weight room from
- 34:54the throwing aspect of it. But again, that's my artistic
- 34:56side of it. You can really be a good coach
- 34:59in knowing the number side of it.
- 35:00I know people who have everything calculated down to,
- 35:04if they throw this ball, this number, this many throws this
- 35:06day and this, they have everything precisely down on a
- 35:09computer and graph down everything else.
- 35:11I'm like, I am so anti graph anti number anti every, but
- 35:16that's just who I am. As a coach, right find really
- 35:19good success in my side of the coaching or really good success
- 35:22too. Their side of coaching.
- 35:23So everyone comes at coaching slightly differently and how
- 35:27they process. It's all processing.
- 35:29It's all cognitive processing and how you think about it and
- 35:32how it kind of flows out that body to me, it's all about
- 35:35energy. How do I position the even in
- 35:38position even technique in and of itself, positions are only
- 35:41there to establish energy flows and the energy has to flow in
- 35:44certain mechanism. So it goes out through the
- 35:46Implement and if it's not, you don't get the proper energy into
- 35:48the Implement. It's still not going to go far
- 35:50no matter how well the positions are created or not created.
- 35:52So everything comes down to energy flow at how the athlete
- 35:55can move their body. I think you really hit something
- 35:59on the head there. Like, in fact, if you're
- 36:00listening the hit the rewind button about three times.
- 36:03And listen, that what you said there Nate was, I'm going to say
- 36:06in a slightly different way. Make sure you correct me.
- 36:08If I'm by misunderstand it, you talked about coaching the
- 36:11person, not just the events, like, you're not coaching
- 36:15robots. I thought your point about when
- 36:17a kid comes in and they're like, you know.
- 36:20Yeah, it says, okay or whatever and you're like, oh, Okay, yeah,
- 36:23yeah. This this this kids on a little
- 36:25bit of a downward. You flunked the test girlfriend
- 36:28boyfriend broke up with them. Mrs. Mom you know that's not
- 36:31that's not uncommon. Right mrs.
- 36:32Family, I'm probably not going to get the A+ workout that I
- 36:37wrote up. However we need to still get the
- 36:40right things going today. So, maybe we lighten the weight
- 36:42load in the weight room. A, we take off a rapper to
- 36:44outside on, try your coaching the person, do you do?
- 36:49So I think that's extremely important.
- 36:51Do you do the opposite? In what I mean by that is kid
- 36:55comes to you for practice and he or she is bouncing like they are
- 36:58on cloud nine. They passed a test, mom or dad
- 37:01slipped him, an extra almost had a 20, but 20 22, that's probably
- 37:05not a lot of money slip. The next 100 dollar venmo, you
- 37:09know the cute boy cute girl, talk to him.
- 37:11Whatever do you ever add a rep or add weight?
- 37:15In that case? Yes, Hunter said that's the
- 37:18other thing. I'm again.
- 37:19So if we're gonna go down that line like I try to sew So in the
- 37:23world of throws, I'm probably going to probably try to get
- 37:26anywhere between 20 to 30 throws a day, but if I know they are
- 37:31sometimes down to 10 if they're really beat down, but if I know
- 37:34they've got a ton of energy and they're on like throw 22.
- 37:37And I'm like, hey what number are you on there?
- 37:38Like I think I'm like 20 or 22 and I'm like, well you've got 15
- 37:41more to go now. They're like, what?
- 37:43Like yeah, you've got the energy and you continue to produce.
- 37:45There's no reason why we don't want production today because
- 37:49you might not get it tomorrow. So let's continue to push in
- 37:51that production. I mean, on that same point in
- 37:54the weight room, like an unpredicted Max day.
- 37:57Now, this doesn't happen all the time, but there's no reason.
- 37:59Why if you're feeling froggy and we're doing doubles and triples
- 38:02and they're like, all right, you know what, we're going to max
- 38:04out today, throw on a single see where you're going because you
- 38:07got a ton of Pop, you got a ton of energy and just go get it
- 38:09done. Sometimes trying to calculate
- 38:11that out, does it necessarily work out calculation wise?
- 38:14But if you're feeling is today, do it.
- 38:16I'm not going to ask you out necessary on 86.
- 38:19Is in five days. That that's more volume.
- 38:22More hypertrophy. Fe more build the body up but on
- 38:24a day, where you getting feeling popping your in doubles and
- 38:26triples, hey, dude, if you feel like you max out, that doesn't
- 38:29happen all the time, but you got to go with the few good or bad.
- 38:33So, on that artistic side, the coaching art side, how do you
- 38:38sell that to? This is the closest we have ever
- 38:41gotten to X's and O's, I'm, I'm walking a fine line with you my
- 38:44friend. Don't, you always have the most
- 38:45fun with girls coaches? So we're getting too close in my
- 38:48opinion. But but, but it's my show.
- 38:51So, you know, I write the rules. How do you sell that to the
- 38:55athlete? You were dealing with in your
- 38:58area, 18 to 22 year olds when you add work too?
- 39:02Someone it's a punishment you know it's like God will go do
- 39:06more of that at a here you're adding work to them but it's
- 39:09actually not a punishment. It's actually an attaboy like
- 39:11you're doing so well, like everything's flowing.
- 39:13Let's get more of the good stuff going while we can.
- 39:16How do you write on the art side?
- 39:19Get that kid to believe into that.
- 39:21Like oh coach has a mad at me. I'm I'm doing more because he's
- 39:24mad at me. Went in the opposite is actually
- 39:26true. How do you how do you sell that
- 39:28to the kid again? So yeah, we can back off back
- 39:31off the x's and o's. Talk about either the recruiting
- 39:34aspect of it or who you're getting as an athlete aspect of
- 39:36it. Like so if you're, if you're
- 39:38going to recruit the kid, listen, I the longer I am in
- 39:41this, in this job. The best in the most
- 39:44advantageous way to recruit yourself as a - recruit yourself
- 39:47to say, listen, you're coming in and you're going to get your
- 39:50butt handed to you on a day-to-day basis.
- 39:52You're gonna not be a very big fish.
- 39:55You're going to learn how to like come in with seniors and
- 39:57juniors that are kicking your butt, having better numbers and
- 40:00Reps than you are. So you've got to live through
- 40:02The grind for a long time and establish yourself.
- 40:04And if you don't Art hungry and passion about being kicked to
- 40:09the curb for a little bit. Then you probably shouldn't be
- 40:11here because the fact of the matter is, I mean, this is the
- 40:15way I say it. I guess the my vernacular, but
- 40:18we're tracking Fields the bastard, sport in the throwers
- 40:21are a bastard. Child within the bathroom sport.
- 40:23So it's not like we're even cared about a whole ton, which
- 40:25is fine. I've got no problem with it at
- 40:26kind of, its kind of what I feed off.
- 40:28Anyway. I like, I, like feeding off.
- 40:30Like, hey, no one's looking at. No one's Karen.
- 40:32I, let's just go kick some butt but they've got to actually
- 40:36they've Got to like that attitude as well.
- 40:37How much pain can I suffer through to make myself better?
- 40:40How good do I want to be? What's the process of this
- 40:43thing? Is it the process or is it the
- 40:45end of the day? I want to be a 200-foot.
- 40:46Her but do you want to work every second of every day to be
- 40:50that 200 footer and it's the attitude who you recruit
- 40:53essentially and it doesn't have to be necessary sometimes.
- 40:56I'm not looking for the best number, you know, called out of
- 40:59high school. But I gotta have a kid when I
- 41:02get on the phone with are telling me about what they're
- 41:04doing the weight room and tell me who they're watching film
- 41:06wise. They doing and how do I get
- 41:07better? Now, there's some athleticism do
- 41:09that because you can be a hungry athlete, but if you don't have
- 41:11talent, you know, you're not going too far.
- 41:13God's only giving you so much ability.
- 41:15So how much is that it does that ability and hunger and passion
- 41:18work together? That's who you're going to find.
- 41:22So if I mean, if we're in that scenario where I'm telling you,
- 41:24you got to do more that day and they're not excited about it.
- 41:27That I probably don't have the right person so you kind of look
- 41:30at it, like, oh, maybe I didn't do my homework, right, or
- 41:33whatever circumstances like I'm like.
- 41:35Yeah. And I listen, I still have kids
- 41:38like that in your program. It's not like you know, maybe
- 41:41when I was younger coach, I get pissed off.
- 41:43Like, oh man, I want everybody have this hunger but again, I'm
- 41:46me. So I have a hunger and passion
- 41:48every day. I wake up all hungry.
- 41:50I can't necessarily drive your hunger and your desire.
- 41:53So you kind of eat nowadays. I would say, I psychologically
- 41:59coach, 90% of the time and physically coach 10% of time.
- 42:03It's, it's how the relationships building.
- 42:05How you understand? Your It's your athletes and how
- 42:08you're going to give them an administer, the workouts that
- 42:10day because you know who they are.
- 42:12So it's building a relationship. I'm more of a psychological
- 42:15coach and in can benefit getting more out of it and kid than I
- 42:20can just trying to like plug in numbers and say, hey well this
- 42:23was your rep scheme today in the weight room and he didn't get it
- 42:26done. So you're going to get worse?
- 42:27No. Well, you didn't get it done
- 42:29quite the way you want to but tomorrow, let's transition and
- 42:32get some other stuff out of you like everyone's a little
- 42:34different I can't you don't want to be a cookie cutter coach, you
- 42:38don't want to, you don't want to have a mindset of.
- 42:41This is the way you need to coach and this is the only way
- 42:43you need to coach. There's every kid you coach is
- 42:45going to be different. So you're probably you're
- 42:47coaching every different kits. Kids slightly different
- 42:51differently, right? Every everybody has to come to a
- 42:54different terms in their head on how they approach the names.
- 42:57But again, your your I'm one throws coach out there.
- 43:00So I have say 20 kids out there, I not at one time, they kind of
- 43:04come through, you know, different different times that
- 43:06But you still have to have a singularity within the throws
- 43:10program. What are we after as a group and
- 43:12then within that Singularity, I can still Branch off and still
- 43:16create different individuals, you know.
- 43:18Verity, some some people I'm trying to win a National
- 43:20Championship. Some people I'm trying to get to
- 43:22my own Conference Championship because can even make the 30-30
- 43:25Squad roster. I don't know.
- 43:27So everyone's got a different different place.
- 43:30Yeah, I think coaching for sure is the Art and Science, right?
- 43:33Because if it was fully one way or the other, if it was all are
- 43:36it'd be one way of he was all science.
- 43:37Well, then what do we actually need to coach for you could just
- 43:40write up a workout on the tablet and have the kid go to the track
- 43:43or the weight room by themselves and what are you really doing
- 43:46here, right? As a coach.
- 43:47So I love that aspect, explore that a little bit more.
- 43:50Help me, understand you, talk about your coaching, 90% more
- 43:55psychologically, 10% physical. I think I might have switched
- 43:58one of your words up there. Where does that come from?
- 44:01You mentioned some mentors earlier that we didn't delve
- 44:04into that, I'd love to you mentioned.
- 44:05You know, Judd, And you mentioned the pagels, John
- 44:11Smith. Yeah.
- 44:12John of course, did you pick up that from guys and gals like
- 44:18them, or was this something earlier because of the, you
- 44:21know, the the bend of artistic for you as a younger kid?
- 44:28I'm going to say the the artistic side.
- 44:30Here's here's what helped me to be the best throws coach to be
- 44:33Hunters. Asia.
- 44:34God has given me only so much athletic ability.
- 44:37And so I had to work. My flip and butt off to do what
- 44:40I did to throw 195 feet by 5 foot.
- 44:43I'm 220 pounds. I don't deserve to be in the
- 44:46ring to be awesome with some of the competitors I was in.
- 44:50So I had to do everything. I need to do to learn technical
- 44:53position. So, all the film that I watched
- 44:55everybody, I watch, I would watch people and watch.
- 44:57Born, you know, you don't just watch the small people, you
- 45:00know, watching the big people, you see the nuances and how they
- 45:02come out of the back of the ring and how they strike and are they
- 45:04using the left leg right leg, you watch it so many times that
- 45:07you end up being a student of the sport.
- 45:09And that's it. It's kind of what I pushed my
- 45:11athletes. You got to be a student, the
- 45:12sport, you wake up every morning, you gotta watch some
- 45:14film you. No idea what you do on that day,
- 45:16go do some drills. If only if you're only doing
- 45:18what I'm giving to you at practice, then you're only going
- 45:21to be so good, you need to have more, you need to take it home
- 45:23with you but that so that's the physical Act of it, knowing kind
- 45:28of how to throw. But again, the psychological
- 45:30aspect of it is trying to convince the kids and that's not
- 45:34trying to convince the kids, but it's keeping their passions
- 45:36going. So if I'm at a heavy cycle in
- 45:38the waiting room, like the Russian cycle really just really
- 45:41tears. Her body down, they get super
- 45:44tired mentally in the fall. They're trying to do their catch
- 45:47up on their studies their work while they're tired, while
- 45:50they're trying to get technique done.
- 45:51You psychologically, you really have to drag him out of the mud
- 45:55every day. This.
- 45:55So essentially I'm kind of Like, hey guys, we could do this, you
- 45:59know, I get it, you're tired, but let's continue to do this.
- 46:01So the coaching aspect of it, I know I can write a program in.
- 46:06I've been consistent with the last 20 years, I'm not trying to
- 46:09reinvent the wheel, you do add little nuances, five, or ten
- 46:13percent. You always change up here and
- 46:15there so you keep things fresh and so the athletes don't know.
- 46:19They're doing the same thing like day to day or year to year.
- 46:21You want to keep things fresh for them but the biggest aspect
- 46:24of it as a coaches go out there and be their cheerleader, you
- 46:27know? No, or, you know what?
- 46:28Even, not just their cheerleader.
- 46:30Sometimes, you got to be a there, dad, I call, I call.
- 46:32It's irrigate parenting. So, when I, when I recruit you,
- 46:35I tell their parent, like, listen, I'm going to Syria
- 46:36parent, they're leaving you, and they're coming to me.
- 46:39So, I have them now for the next four or five years and then
- 46:41under my care, under my tutelage, and they are like my
- 46:43children. I and sometimes dad asked to be
- 46:46really harsh and put their foot down and say, Hey, listen,
- 46:49you're screwing up, your pissing me off, and you need to learn
- 46:52the hard way and that resonates that I think they need that
- 46:57discipline. Sometimes it gets them out of
- 46:58some Punk's or they kind of have to learn a little lesson in life
- 47:02because not everyone's coming in here, you know, necessarily is
- 47:05passionate every single day or wanting to go to the Olympics.
- 47:08You know you got to have a little parenting involved in
- 47:09there as well so there's parenting, there's there's
- 47:13cheerleading there's you know, writing programs, there's
- 47:16learning artistic flow coaching side, it has a big aspect of it
- 47:20and I think younger coaches when I was a younger coach, it would
- 47:24be 90% that programming. Active in 10% psychological,
- 47:29right? I was your cheerleader 10% of
- 47:31time, but doggone it. If you didn't listen to my
- 47:32programming, you're pissing me off and you're screwing up.
- 47:35It is 20 years into the show. It is totally reversed.
- 47:40Here's what I've got. If you don't want to do it,
- 47:42probably not going to get very good but I get it because you're
- 47:45being an idiot today, but I'm trying to psychologically bring
- 47:48you back around to that. I think that's where some of the
- 47:50best coaching comes from. Not necessarily the numbers on
- 47:53paper, but net how that relationship works.
- 47:56So how do we Love that. I mean Bingo.
- 47:59And here's where we can bring value from your experience.
- 48:03You just said early in my career, the 90/10 was probably
- 48:07physical versus psychological and now twenty years on its
- 48:12flipped 180, it's completely opposite.
- 48:14So you had to have gone through ups and downs, athletes, that
- 48:18challenged you personal aspects of the coaching that challenged
- 48:24you to do that. It didn't just one day you on
- 48:26your 10th anniversary. Of coaching, they didn't just
- 48:28flip like it went from 90 10 to 80, 20 to 70 30, you know,
- 48:31probably didn't go that linear either, by the way there, you
- 48:33know, we know the truth of ups and downs.
- 48:36So, help someone out right now. There is a coach listening and
- 48:40they're in their third year coaching and they.
- 48:42There's two coaches, we're going to have two scenarios.
- 48:44There's a coach listening right now.
- 48:46They're in their third year and they think they got it down like
- 48:49they're kind of listened to you. Like, really took you 20 years,
- 48:50man. I'm in my third year and I got
- 48:52this thing down pat on the greatest coach and I'm about to
- 48:54coach a million Olympians and then there's another coach out
- 48:57there right now. That's in their third year
- 48:58going. Okay?
- 49:00Okay, I believe this. So, how do I not wait until my
- 49:0320th year finger, how do I learn this?
- 49:05Now, in my third fourth fifth year, what advice can you give
- 49:08to Young coaches? And I don't know that this
- 49:09isn't, I don't know that this is a throws advice here, even
- 49:14though we got the throws coach, I think this is a coaching
- 49:17advice. How do you how can we help
- 49:19accelerate young coaches into this?
- 49:21What I believe is the proper mindset of coaching young people
- 49:2518 to 22 years old? Well, okay, unfortunately I'm
- 49:30going to say like this. You're going to have to
- 49:33continue. It isn't like, like you said, it
- 49:36doesn't go from 9010 at all sudden to switch that there is a
- 49:40natural progress and the progression comes from you as a
- 49:42human being learning how to deal with other human beings.
- 49:46So I rolled on finger now that everybody wanted you to give
- 49:50some kind of magic pill and you know, you're going to get that
- 49:54athlete that struggles to learn the hammer.
- 49:57Because they never did in high school.
- 49:58You just said something that's really challenging.
- 50:01You said, you're going to have to it's on you.
- 50:05You're going to have to develop as the coach.
- 50:07Yeah. It's not the athlete.
- 50:09It's you. As a human being.
- 50:10It's how you process. It's how you cognitively
- 50:15process. The ability to coach.
- 50:17It comes down to it because when I was young and you have to
- 50:20program what you're trying to prove to the athletes and trying
- 50:23to prove to yourself, which takes years.
- 50:25And I'm, this is the hardest part done.
- 50:27Stand and the years, man, the years of programming have to
- 50:32have to lend to successful athletes.
- 50:35So, if you have mac Champions, if you have continually National
- 50:40qualifiers, if you have kids in the top on the platform of the
- 50:44NCAA championships, then you're doing something right.
- 50:46That's the programming aspect of it because the reality is this,
- 50:49you could be a third year coach right now.
- 50:51If I'm talking to you as a third, your coach and you think
- 50:53you have it down, ask yourself. How many people did you put on
- 50:56the The NCAA is, could see if you didn't put one, you don't
- 50:59have it down. If you didn't put a national
- 51:00champion out there, you don't have a down and the person that
- 51:03is questioning themselves. That's a good question to have.
- 51:06Who, how were you successful as coach?
- 51:08Now, everyone's different maybe with somebody wanted to be a
- 51:10conference champion and not a national champion.
- 51:12Well, that's fine, you find out your own level as a person who
- 51:15you want to be. If I don't have somebody
- 51:17standing on that National Championship stage, I didn't do
- 51:19my job. So the first aspect of it is
- 51:22being able to understand how to get the athletes there through a
- 51:25programming system. That's Or the early years, you
- 51:28better be talking to Don Babbitt, you better be talking
- 51:31to the pagels, you better be talking to John Smith.
- 51:33You better be talking to every Mentor that you can think of
- 51:36and, you know, unfortunately, the Judd Logan's.
- 51:39How do you program your system now?
- 51:42Just because it came from them, doesn't mean it fits you, like,
- 51:45I've learned as I'm watching, as I'm as I'm sit there and asking
- 51:49questions, I'm like, well, that I'm glad I'm asking these
- 51:51questions because that really did well that program in the way
- 51:54you coach the person, but he would never Fly with me, it
- 51:57would never sit well with the way I program just because it's
- 52:00who I am in the artistic flow of it.
- 52:02So, I've learned just as much of talking to them about what not
- 52:05to do for me, as about what to do to do for me.
- 52:09So those first again for five or six years is do develop, take
- 52:14some time to develop who you are as a programmer.
- 52:17And a lot of that comes down to this, I've been talking to my
- 52:19young assistant coaches and I'm excited to be a head coach
- 52:21because I can actually work into being with my assistant coaches
- 52:26as much as my ass. It's like really trying to make
- 52:28better assistant coaches. But a lot of it is like, hey, if
- 52:32you have, if you want to know how to play with an athlete, get
- 52:35a walk-on kid that that might you might be good, might not be
- 52:39good. But then you could that's your
- 52:40test dummy. Hey, what am I going to do here?
- 52:43I'm throwing different ideas out.
- 52:44Did it stick? Did it?
- 52:45Work did not work. You don't want to break them by
- 52:47any stretch. But did, are they going really
- 52:50well? That they are, they not doing
- 52:51well, you can us as coaches really have to play with our own
- 52:54recipes. Is it too much salt?
- 52:55Is it too much? Pepper.
- 52:57Is it take this out? Take that out so you kind of do
- 52:59it takes a while to formulate in your head.
- 53:02Are you successful as a coach? Because what stage are you
- 53:05putting them on? And then getting to that part
- 53:08where their programming? Well, and then as that happens,
- 53:11okay? Now I've got a good program
- 53:13setup, but you as a person now, I don't want to say this to some
- 53:17extent, but you kind of get bored there's born in that sets.
- 53:20And so if I do this year after year, after year after year, not
- 53:22change, anything sure I've got a good program, but where's that
- 53:25boredom come in I like, okay, well, I didn't change anything,
- 53:29these athletes are killing it. So that's where the
- 53:31psychological aspect of. So, instead of trying to just
- 53:34administer now positioning to them.
- 53:37Now I'm befriending them to some extent or I'm being a dad to
- 53:40them. So now here's the, here's the
- 53:42outlay of the plan, how do we work to that me and you
- 53:45together? That's where that friendship
- 53:46comes in and I think you early on in your career, friendships
- 53:49are hard to have because you're so pinpoint on making that
- 53:53programming, right? Which is I get it as part of
- 53:55coaching, you need to have that. I mean, right in order to be
- 53:57successful, the older you get some of the boredom sets.
- 54:00In psychologically, you can flip things around and you kind of
- 54:03grow as an individual. It's just it's like listen, it's
- 54:06like sanctification. You're always working on the
- 54:08process of being a better Christian.
- 54:11You're always working on the process of taking that sin away
- 54:14from yourself and becoming christ-like follower and that's
- 54:17no different than in my coaching aspect of it.
- 54:19I'm trying to Everyday make these kids better and it did
- 54:23have it had its flows you start with the mechanics of it and um,
- 54:26Up working to the relationship of it.
- 54:28So I think an important aspect you said there is You can go to
- 54:34clinics and go to camps and go to Coach it education and I, you
- 54:38know, if you've listened any episodes here, you know, that I
- 54:40am a huge huge proponent of that mentors.
- 54:43Huge huge proponent of that. And you mentioned some of the I
- 54:47mean true Legends specifically in throws but real Legends in
- 54:51our sport but there's one thing that you can't force you can't
- 54:55speed up you can't compact into a short amount of time and
- 54:59that's experience. I think it's exactly what what I
- 55:02hear you saying. Is, you know, you're working on
- 55:04your program and years 12345. And to your point that maybe
- 55:07three years for one person and maybe 10 years for another.
- 55:10We're all different how we learn and how we process feedback from
- 55:14our own athletes and programs. As you continue to develop and
- 55:18gain experience, you see what works, what doesn't work with
- 55:21different parts of your careers boredom when that sets in.
- 55:24How do you get? You know, Platts get out of that
- 55:25Plateau. It's that experience part that
- 55:28you just can't. I love how you talk about your,
- 55:30you're 18. You're so excited now about
- 55:32mentoring. Two young coaches.
- 55:34Now that you're a head coach, like you have been with your
- 55:36athletes for many years, you're going to give them so much,
- 55:39great leeway and lengthen, the leash and experience, but they
- 55:44can't force experience. They're going to need year 1 and
- 55:46year 2, and then 4 and 5 Etc. So I love that.
- 55:51Let's let's pivot here a little bit to something.
- 55:53We were talking about earlier. I tend to think of these things
- 55:56a little bit differently than I think most people, and it may be
- 55:58sounded like, you might be on the same wavelength.
- 56:00I think it's important for people to hear.
- 56:02All sides of it. You were talking about
- 56:04recruiting and you know, the researcher doing on the athletes
- 56:08and it's not just about the mark and I think maybe four throws
- 56:11specifically male throwers, it might be even more important to
- 56:14see physical abilities and regards to are they six foot two
- 56:18or five foot ten etcetera, just because of the, you know, the
- 56:21way going up from high school to college for women, I was found,
- 56:25you know, not that I recruited a lot of women shelters but I'm
- 56:27like, hey, that 4K is going to stay the exact same.
- 56:30You get SAR levels. So I'm if you throw in 50 feet,
- 56:32Now I'm good. Maybe why I was I'm not coaching
- 56:36anymore, but you talked about during the recruiting process
- 56:42almost at the interview process which is, which is what it is.
- 56:45You're looking for certain things.
- 56:46And if someone doesn't have that and you were talking more like
- 56:49attitude and doggedness and determination if they don't have
- 56:53it. You're like it's better that
- 56:56they don't come to you, right? Because your talked about if you
- 56:59come to my program and you aren't ready to be the bastard
- 57:01of the bastard sport, you're a struggle here.
- 57:04You know. So how do you deal with that
- 57:07that mind frame of when a kid says, hey I'm not coming to your
- 57:11program because of whatever reasons they may actually give
- 57:13you whatever the reasons might actually be.
- 57:15That's actually a like I think of that as like a good thing.
- 57:18It's like, oh if a kid decides I'm not the right coach for
- 57:21them. Hugh, we both Dodge bullets.
- 57:23They're not going to come here and be miserable and they're not
- 57:25going to come here and make me miserable and make the program.
- 57:27How do you deal with that during recruiting?
- 57:29Because you want them? All right.
- 57:30I mean, if you're attracted to a kid for Marx and personality
- 57:33you. You want them but it may not be
- 57:35the right fit. Sure.
- 57:38You know what? That, again, that's part of the
- 57:39the coaching aspect of I guess this is where maybe I differ
- 57:46that a lot of different coaches and it, I again, I probably
- 57:52because it's my centrality, it's who I am.
- 57:54I'm as a Christ follower, I call it my Catch-22.
- 57:58I pray for who needs to be in here.
- 58:00It's, here's the other thing for me to me.
- 58:02I coach that's what I do gods. Give me the ability to cope so
- 58:06it. But I also consider this my
- 58:08Ministry. Like I'm not going to shove it
- 58:10down anybody's throat, I don't like Christ never made anybody
- 58:14Christian but I am an Avenue. I am an Avenue for a Ministry
- 58:17essentially so that's why I think it's kind of a catch-22.
- 58:20Hey God if you want them here? Cool, if not whatever are you
- 58:23fine who needs to be here? That that's so we be able to
- 58:26real a process on my own and that aspect of it because
- 58:29there's a lot of kids that I, you know, I wanted like for
- 58:32Studs last year and I missed out on every one of them.
- 58:36But you know what? That is what it is.
- 58:37You go on and he said, okay, well, if I miss for heavy ones
- 58:40in a row, I guess I needed but two or three, you know, building
- 58:44kids like kids that maybe I have the biggest Mark but eventually
- 58:48could work with them and by their Junior and Senior year or
- 58:50sophomore junior senior year, they're up to the level where
- 58:54they're at conference like winning top three or maybe they
- 58:57make the regional M it possibly make it the NCAA championships
- 59:00versus the other the for that I could have had you know, Would
- 59:02have been cough Mac, Champions Regional, you know, qualifiers
- 59:05and on to the ncaa's within that first year.
- 59:08So, a lot of it depends upon again, how things flow?
- 59:11I don't, I don't take anything personally, that's by any
- 59:14stretch of the imagination nowadays.
- 59:15If you take it personally, like all, they didn't come because of
- 59:17me. Listen, I'm recruiting the kids
- 59:20state. So it's a two-way street.
- 59:21I'm recruiting you because I want you to be here, but you're
- 59:24recruiting me because you want to be here at Kent State.
- 59:26Do you have the major? Are you willing to go through a
- 59:28lot of work? Are you around your family?
- 59:31There's a lot of different But I'm not going to go recruit
- 59:33California, Texas and Florida because I'm going to bring them
- 59:35to Kent State, Ohio with six inches of snow on the ground.
- 59:39All winter long. It is what it is.
- 59:40Like, I've got a field house but I don't have sunny California
- 59:43weather. So I'm not going to go out and
- 59:45search for that all the time. Don't they come to me?
- 59:47That's that's fine. And I've made some good
- 59:50interactions with like Jamaica. I've had a Jamaican female on my
- 59:54throat. Probably, for the last.
- 59:56I don't know, since Daniel in 2012.
- 59:58So last 10 years that I'd really actually enjoy that aspect of it
- 1:00:01is keeping A ship down there. It's not like I have to have
- 1:00:04every single Jamaican or or every single Ohio, and it's
- 1:00:07just, you know, you learn 22 years, like, you get them.
- 1:00:11Cool. If you don't, whatever, move on
- 1:00:13to the next one, you'll figure it out.
- 1:00:15How to have a throws program one way or the other.
- 1:00:17You know this does not diminish what you just said.
- 1:00:21But you also are in the midwest. It's hard not to have a good
- 1:00:24throws. Forget well actually it is hard
- 1:00:25because there's so many great throws coaches but there are so
- 1:00:27many great throwers. I'm reminding you it's the right
- 1:00:36fit. Does somebody fit here?
- 1:00:37Do I fit with them? They feel with me.
- 1:00:38Yeah, I'm reminded. So I'm a big Christian, hip-hop
- 1:00:42fan. That's my 99% of the music.
- 1:00:46I listen to is Lecrae and KB and Andy Mineo and KJ, five, two and
- 1:00:51more. The other one percent.
- 1:00:53By the way, is Vanilla Ice. Just in case you're curious what
- 1:00:58that other one for sin is its Rob.
- 1:01:00It's been allies but there's a line I believe it's an elite
- 1:01:03crazy song. He says, you know, you made me a
- 1:01:06preacher but you didn't give me a collar meaning, you know, the
- 1:01:10traditional catholic collar. And that's how, you know, a Pap
- 1:01:12reach priest priest, he ever kept Catholicism, I'm reminded
- 1:01:17of that with you when you talk about your faith and you're
- 1:01:19like, yeah, you know, I'm like this is how I am Minister.
- 1:01:23I don't have a cop. I'm not a, an official Priest or
- 1:01:27a preacher or what not? But this is how you you show,
- 1:01:29God's love that and with his effect on your life and where
- 1:01:32you are today, right hundred percent.
- 1:01:35Yeah, you gotta call it, you're not gonna have a throats coach,
- 1:01:37or a head coach or something like that.
- 1:01:38I mean, like I would put a collar on no way, he's got me in
- 1:01:42this, this line of work because he enjoys this line of people,
- 1:01:46like, that's a calling, I can call these.
- 1:01:48People is awesome, and I'm not that great of a theologian, but
- 1:01:51I do believe that Jesus never wore a collar either.
- 1:01:54So, I think it, I think it's okay.
- 1:01:57It fits right in. So obviously his calling was
- 1:01:59after, you know, close to 20 years as an assistant coach, to
- 1:02:03now the right time and you probably knew the insides of it
- 1:02:06but it caught me off-guard when I saw the retirement of Bill
- 1:02:09Lawson who had also been at now. Kent State for quite a while to
- 1:02:13be now the director of track and field.
- 1:02:16I told you to put a pin in it earlier when I talked about a
- 1:02:18throws coach being a head coach and you alluded to this earlier,
- 1:02:21when you talked about, you have my throwers and you're likely
- 1:02:23on, they come at different times.
- 1:02:24That's traditionally what I see on the Legit setting for
- 1:02:27throwers is, you know, Hammer throwers come out at 9 a.m.
- 1:02:32Javelin throwers at noon. One section of shot-putter,
- 1:02:35discus at two, and then another for making of times, but you
- 1:02:38know, it's, that's not unheard of for me to hear of two to
- 1:02:41three to four different workout groups for for throwers because
- 1:02:45the events are so radically different.
- 1:02:48I know the long jump triple jumps different but it's still
- 1:02:51main component is run a run up the runway and then you do
- 1:02:54something different. Once you go past the The take
- 1:02:57afford, I just ticked off every throws or every jumps coach in
- 1:03:00the world right now. They're all like, remember I was
- 1:03:01a jumps coach? I know.
- 1:03:03I know it over. Simplified that.
- 1:03:05How do you as a throws coach? How do you now is the director?
- 1:03:10You're responsible for a lot more than what you were as the
- 1:03:13throws coach? How are you going to change?
- 1:03:19If at all on how you coach in regards to not not how you coach
- 1:03:22exynos but how you coach organizationally also knowing
- 1:03:25that, you know, Got other things.
- 1:03:27You got to do now, is the director scheduling budgeting
- 1:03:29assistant coach mentoring and Cetera.
- 1:03:33Listen, Maybe I thought about it before I even applied number
- 1:03:38one, you know, can you can you do all these other things and
- 1:03:41still be a successful throws coach?
- 1:03:43But I think really the biggest key is number one is having your
- 1:03:46the right assistant coaches around you.
- 1:03:48So law was the type of guy who had to do most everything
- 1:03:53himself, he was going to do the hotels.
- 1:03:55Use going to do this. He was so he structured himself
- 1:03:59more dictator like I've got this, i got this handled so.
- 1:04:02It did freed up a lot of us like a well, shoot, I've got
- 1:04:05officials, and I've got my throwers, you know, I've got
- 1:04:09some odds and ends you like recruiting aspect of it, but I
- 1:04:12didn't have a ton of that head coaching stuff so I was like
- 1:04:14shoot, you know, the way he made it look was going to be like,
- 1:04:16man, do I want to do this? Do I want to bear that that
- 1:04:19burden and then East kind of stick gets back, you like listen
- 1:04:22that's not how you have to do. It's by any stretch you give you
- 1:04:26get an assistant coach for that, you trust and I brought Mike
- 1:04:30schobert, I hired him he was upset.
- 1:04:32For Michigan. Killed it up.
- 1:04:33There had more than 60 points or 62 points at our conference
- 1:04:36championships and I knew sprinting coach why he's going
- 1:04:39to get the job done as far as getting the Sprint stuff done
- 1:04:41and I can trust that and I can trust him doing some of the
- 1:04:44stuff on the day-to-day stuff. I've got a young assistant named
- 1:04:48Alex Bloom who is crazy, recruiting awesome recruiting, I
- 1:04:53can trust and Rod him that and James Croft.
- 1:04:55My distance coach. I can trust.
- 1:04:57So it's having those people you trust around you.
- 1:05:00Number one that I'm not going to be up in the office.
- 1:05:02They by any stretch of the imagination.
- 1:05:04The other aspect of it is I my youngest is 12 years old.
- 1:05:09He's going to get on the bus at 7:30 in the morning.
- 1:05:12And once he's on the bus, I've got my 17 year old, already
- 1:05:15drives, the high school, my 15 year old can go with him.
- 1:05:19I don't have to do lunches, we have to get kids in the bus at
- 1:05:228:30. I don't have to pack everything
- 1:05:25else. My mornings have freed up
- 1:05:27massively, so I plan on being in the office which is nice say
- 1:05:308:30 to 11, then I have group. One that goes 11:49.
- 1:05:33We lift from eleven or twelve to one session, to goes from 12 to
- 1:05:382 live from 12 to 2, 3 or 4. Then, after that, we've got Med
- 1:05:43balls or javelins, I mean, again, you're right.
- 1:05:45We go Section after section a section about those coaches do.
- 1:05:48But I've got that morning, time to come up here.
- 1:05:50And hey, what do we need to do? The other?
- 1:05:52The other aspect of is this a lot of coaches like to come up
- 1:05:55in the in the offices and they sit down and they just BS with
- 1:05:58other coaches solo come in and talk about this or listen.
- 1:06:02I told my staff. What I'm in here.
- 1:06:03If I've got work to do I'm not necessarily shut my door but you
- 1:06:06shut up and I'm gonna do my work.
- 1:06:07You do your work we got our stuff done.
- 1:06:09We can have fun in the office obvious because I'm Gonna Have
- 1:06:11fun wherever I am, but the idea is not to come up and chitchat
- 1:06:14the ideas that come up for that hour or two that we need to get
- 1:06:16stuff done and get it done. And then, boom, you go out and
- 1:06:19throw scope. So I think sometimes you know us
- 1:06:22T, we step back and we make a little bit too big of a deal
- 1:06:25about ourselves. I go as the head coach, we got
- 1:06:27so much responsibility. Listen, I did hotels, I can set
- 1:06:30that up in like like less than a day.
- 1:06:32I I've got my schedule down. It's not who really hard to do
- 1:06:35this stuff. It's just making time to do it.
- 1:06:38Having the coaching staff from the right room.
- 1:06:39Making sure we're all on the same page in proceeding with
- 1:06:42what we need to do. And if I'm not up the office,
- 1:06:43hey James, your did your cross country in the morning, you're
- 1:06:47the office in the afternoon, get some stuff done.
- 1:06:48That needs to be done because I'm not going to be up there.
- 1:06:50So it's just trusting your people for the most part.
- 1:06:53I do wonder how much you know we talked about as track coaches
- 1:06:57the number of hours that we have to put in a week.
- 1:06:59It's not an 8 to 5 jobs, not a 40 hour week job and I would
- 1:07:02agree with that but I do Wonder because we don't have that
- 1:07:06structured 825, you know, we have to clock in at 8 and out at
- 1:07:095:00. I wonder how many times we you
- 1:07:12know, we we lacked we relax too much and it's like, oh, I don't
- 1:07:16have to worry about. I can do the bus schedule
- 1:07:17tomorrow or two hours from now and it's like, well, okay.
- 1:07:20Well there's two hours you you didn't have to work that you
- 1:07:23could have already really work. You know.
- 1:07:25I just wonder if our if we fit self-fulfilling prophecy that
- 1:07:28you know I know it takes four hundred hours a week.
- 1:07:31Well it's because As you're in the office, not working.
- 1:07:34Because because we're typically probably not office people as
- 1:07:37track coaches. I see it all the time.
- 1:07:39They're like, oh, we work so much.
- 1:07:41I'm thinking myself, like, like they give us a tour.
- 1:07:43So busy, I'm like, no, you just get it done.
- 1:07:46Like, literally stating get it done for like, at that hour and
- 1:07:49then it's taken off your plate. Like, I'm not saying you can't
- 1:07:52procrastinate because I think that's building the relief
- 1:07:54relationship again, right? You need to have that
- 1:07:56relationship with the staff and the assistant coaches.
- 1:07:58And when I sit up here, my guess is, I'm going to have people
- 1:08:00filter my office. So even though I want to I've
- 1:08:02done, I'm always got somebody, sit in the office want to talk.
- 1:08:05I did that aspect of it but the reality is when I want to get
- 1:08:08something done I'm going to get it done and say, get out of my
- 1:08:10office. I got to get this done.
- 1:08:12Not so I think it is we like to were, I think people people you
- 1:08:16know, people persons, we like that are hundred athletes and we
- 1:08:20like to have that discussion, we build those relationships, but
- 1:08:22if you let that relationships continue to flow into the
- 1:08:24office, then we say, oh, we're so busy really.
- 1:08:27It's just your relationship building.
- 1:08:29When you want to find, just shut that off and get crap done and
- 1:08:31be done with it. Yeah, I don't see it hard and no
- 1:08:36judgment. I mean if you are if you want to
- 1:08:39say, overcompensate on that side of it, no judgment.
- 1:08:42It's just hard for you to now say, oh, I'm working 60, 70, 80
- 1:08:46hours a week when in reality you could pair it back to closer to
- 1:08:51the traditional 40 but again, no judgment.
- 1:08:53If that's how you want to write in different parts of our lives,
- 1:08:56right? You mentioned, you know, 12 year
- 1:08:58old and then, you know, two older ones are in high school.
- 1:09:00That is way different than when you had a newborn.
- 1:09:02And to, you know, almost middle schoolers, right, that life
- 1:09:05looked a lot different than what you have today, you know.
- 1:09:09I don't think I'd have been a head coach.
- 1:09:11If I had anybody in that middle school age where I'm trying to
- 1:09:14still be a dad and I want to get home and like so no, I'm going
- 1:09:18to be at home as long as I can and I'm going to get done throws
- 1:09:21coaching on we go home because I'm gonna be home again.
- 1:09:22Like I've got soccer practice, I got football practice, I've got
- 1:09:25this. I got I think YouTube and I've
- 1:09:26got like, like right now my daughter.
- 1:09:29She just joined the golf team. So I got to drive her in the
- 1:09:31morning or pick. Her up at 10 and Driver to band
- 1:09:33camp at noon and come back at noon and blah, blah blah.
- 1:09:35Well now my my 70 said hey I got a podcast today so you're
- 1:09:39picking people up so it's still like life still flows around the
- 1:09:42job and of itself but you just got to be able to come to the
- 1:09:44office and get stuff done in your head.
- 1:09:46You know he's part of the rocket.
- 1:09:48Any of these kids going to be track coaches, we just sort of
- 1:09:50golf coach, which that might be the real sweet coaching gig.
- 1:09:53By the way, as become a golf coach know, my kids are, so not
- 1:09:58who I am. Every my youngest my 12 year,
- 1:10:01olds more. Athletic and more, like, I'm
- 1:10:04going to get to a, but my oldest is like, hey, you know what life
- 1:10:07comes like? I could see him living in a van
- 1:10:09down by the river. That is 1000 percent and I'd be
- 1:10:13like, hey, I'll visit you down by your van down by the river.
- 1:10:16And that's where you living. That's good.
- 1:10:20My daughter, she is she's the fifteen-year-old, she'll
- 1:10:24probably become a teacher because she just likes to teach
- 1:10:26everybody and be bossy in the house and then the 12 year-old,
- 1:10:29I think he'll be an athlete and kind of like Dad.
- 1:10:31I guess. I don't know about a track
- 1:10:32coach. Nothing did really track and I
- 1:10:33don't care. Do what you want to do.
- 1:10:35Like, I've got my reptile my crack and I buy, I love read my
- 1:10:39Bible in the morning and my relationship with Christ is most
- 1:10:41part things. So, outside of that, you guys
- 1:10:43have fun with life and do whatever floats your boat
- 1:10:46because I don't really care. Hey, that's healthy.
- 1:10:48Some people are listening there right now and going, wow, what a
- 1:10:50day? That's not a good debt.
- 1:10:52I actually think me and you are, that's what I love learning
- 1:10:55about people. We have on the podcast, mean you
- 1:10:57are a lot of like my friend that makes me feel bad for you but
- 1:11:01we're a lot alike. I say the same thing I'm like
- 1:11:03all right whatever you do, don't care, just go do it.
- 1:11:05You know, have fun long as you enjoy.
- 1:11:07That's all that matters. I think that's super healthy as
- 1:11:09a parent. You know, it's being overly
- 1:11:11involved. Being involved is really, really
- 1:11:13important. I think they're in.
- 1:11:14It's a fine line. Being overly involved.
- 1:11:17I think, is an issue. We were just at the Illinois
- 1:11:21State Fair. We only went for one reason is
- 1:11:23because this company that does lures fishing.
- 1:11:26Lures was down there and my son, huge to Sherman.
- 1:11:30I can't stand fish. Being at all like, yeah, it's
- 1:11:36boring to me, I just cannot do it.
- 1:11:39He, uh, fishes 24/7. And so, we literally, when he
- 1:11:42was younger, we took him to a free fishing day because I was
- 1:11:45like sounds like kind of in the same vein.
- 1:11:47I was like, whatever the kids want to try let them try.
- 1:11:49If they love it. Great, if they don't.
- 1:11:50Okay, whatever. And so we took him to a free
- 1:11:53fishing days like well, maybe he'll like it.
- 1:11:54I don't know. I can't stand it, but maybe he
- 1:11:55will. And, you know, purview no pun
- 1:11:58intended. He was hooked.
- 1:11:59The very first little stinky fish and now he's Ten pound bass
- 1:12:03at camp this summer and just, I mean he is the guy's got like
- 1:12:07200 and something lures. I mean, it's like when I say
- 1:12:10he's addicted, he's addicted. And I'm like knock yourself out.
- 1:12:13Go do your thing man. I don't hate to say the way you
- 1:12:16said it but it is true is like I don't care.
- 1:12:18Just go do your thing man. Honestly I was you have passion,
- 1:12:21it's all good. There's our there's our
- 1:12:23parenting tip of the podcast right there.
- 1:12:26Okay. Let's go to a different kind of
- 1:12:28parenting and something that I'm wildly fascinated by.
- 1:12:32Cuz I'm a critter person I used to have snakes from college up
- 1:12:36and up until I met my wife who is not a snake person.
- 1:12:39I've had different types of snakes and reptiles good friend
- 1:12:42of mine, Jeff Hartwig is a big reptile reader dealer, and
- 1:12:46things like that. You I don't know how I think I
- 1:12:49learned it through Facebook. These seats social media is
- 1:12:50amazing. Yahoo tell me more you breed you
- 1:12:54sell, you have these. I'm going to probably say it
- 1:12:57wrong and I'm say lizards there get goes you're going to teach
- 1:13:00me give some fascinating reptiles.
- 1:13:02Tell us about this. How did you get into that?
- 1:13:04What do you, what do you do these things?
- 1:13:05Tell us more. So I was always, I always liked
- 1:13:10animals growing up. I always had either a parakeet
- 1:13:13or a snake, or a rat, or I had an iguana when I was in high
- 1:13:16school. So I was an animal guy, but it's
- 1:13:21just his kind of evolved to like having a reptile room and when I
- 1:13:25was, when I was younger, I so I had snakes like with you, but
- 1:13:31then I got married in the wife said, Oh whoa, no snakes.
- 1:13:33I was like, okay, I'm okay with no snakes and so we end up
- 1:13:36taking my snake and I traded at a pet shop for tortoise and I
- 1:13:40end up and it was like, a self Kutta.
- 1:13:43The African sell kind of tourists, which is the fourth
- 1:13:45largest tortoise in the world. I knew he was going to get super
- 1:13:47big, but tortoises had me hooked for a little while.
- 1:13:49I love their little like, love to who they were.
- 1:13:51But I knew once, Gregory that was his name.
- 1:13:54That was our first tortoise. He got to the size where I'm
- 1:13:56like, listen I can't, we can't keep this tortoise forever.
- 1:13:59So I end up selling him to a person out in California, who
- 1:14:01could raise them Big farm and do their stuff there.
- 1:14:05And I got in the big research was the smallest tortoise and so
- 1:14:09I had tortoises product probably for a decade.
- 1:14:11But tortoises honestly are long-lived.
- 1:14:13It takes a while for them to mature.
- 1:14:15You don't even know if they're going to be males or females
- 1:14:17until your two or three sometimes four or five.
- 1:14:20Like if you got big ones like Galapagos has are all dobrze
- 1:14:25will take 10 or 20 years so you got to have a long I wasn't into
- 1:14:29that. So I end up ten years in a
- 1:14:31Taurus unlikely. And I'm going to, I'm going to
- 1:14:33step away from the reptiles for a bit and kind of just take a
- 1:14:36break and after a year of not having any reptiles like this is
- 1:14:39ridiculous, I've got something. So I end up getting I was in the
- 1:14:43geckos for a while so I put some money into some geckos and I got
- 1:14:48a lot of Australian species in the neveress was like really
- 1:14:51wheeler. I and I got a me, a and Levis
- 1:14:54and all these different species and I again this is the artistic
- 1:14:57aspect of me. I would get red ones in Orange
- 1:14:59ones and banded ones. And so I love the art.
- 1:15:02It going downstairs and feeding them crickets.
- 1:15:05The whole feeding aspect of it, cleaning cages and looking at
- 1:15:07them. But after I mean I started with
- 1:15:11geckos in 2011, by Levi about 2,000 18 or 19.
- 1:15:14I probably had 40 of them. And yes, it was and 40.
- 1:15:20I don't know. Some people are like, oh, for
- 1:15:21he's not bad because I have like 3,000, well, 40 as a track
- 1:15:25coach. So I've got females that are
- 1:15:27laying eggs. I've got pink eggs that are
- 1:15:29incubating popping out. And I'm always on a A trip and
- 1:15:32so the wife has to go downstairs.
- 1:15:34I'm like hey go you know see if there's anything come out of the
- 1:15:37incubator and I've got baby cage, just made.
- 1:15:39Go put those three babies in the cape so she is having to deal
- 1:15:41with this and I would say by 2019, she had had enough of it,
- 1:15:47she was pissed. So as well shoot, I can't not
- 1:15:52have reptiles but I can't continue to do what I'm doing.
- 1:15:55So I end up finding and I don't know how I didn't have him
- 1:16:00earlier. But like you said, lizards, I
- 1:16:02Kind of got I've shifted in the lizard's aspect of it and
- 1:16:05they're called agar. Nia the species is a gurney.
- 1:16:08And it's a, there's essentially skinks from Australia and
- 1:16:14they're more rare. And so there are super high
- 1:16:17dollar. They're not cheap by any stretch
- 1:16:19of imagination. I have one pair of a gurney of
- 1:16:23that are ten thousand dollars. I have another pair of of
- 1:16:26depressive that are four thousand dollars even though I'm
- 1:16:28selling them because I'm buying some or boreas, gotta practice
- 1:16:31which are from From East Africa, but they're about anywhere
- 1:16:35between seven to ten thousand dollars for a pair.
- 1:16:37So I have massive amounts of money into a couple pairs but
- 1:16:41here's the deal. It's like instead of having 40
- 1:16:44geckos that end up being 25 thousand dollars.
- 1:16:46Now I only have six to eight things downstairs and their
- 1:16:50lives bearers. So they don't have eggs, they
- 1:16:53are easy with the desert. I have my hot spots on them if
- 1:16:56they become grab it and Pregnant and they have a baby, it's not
- 1:16:59like the wife has to deal with them.
- 1:17:00So everything is self. Contained in my reptile room
- 1:17:03right now high-dollar species. Yes, less of them and they're
- 1:17:06self-contained. So we need 40 pets is a lot 40
- 1:17:12pets, that you're breeding and taken care of and you know it's
- 1:17:16I'ma call it a business you know it's buying and selling and
- 1:17:18things like that. That's that's a full-time job.
- 1:17:21I never could understand what Hartwig was you know, being a
- 1:17:23professional pole vaulter and then his agency and working with
- 1:17:28us and it was doing. I was like, where do you find
- 1:17:30the time? I mean, I know it's not, you
- 1:17:31know, it's not a Every day you got to make sure something
- 1:17:34happens, you know like a dog. You got to feed it every day and
- 1:17:36walk it every day, but still it's takes time and effort and
- 1:17:41research and it takes time. So we're on the, on the 40.
- 1:17:45Get goes where you breeding like trying to make specific color
- 1:17:49patterns and things like that. That some people do like snakes
- 1:17:52and other. Yeah, depending on what you're
- 1:17:54doing it like the ball python rolling, say the snakes, we call
- 1:17:58them color palettes. And I can't have something I
- 1:18:00love to watch like that. They have snakes that you can
- 1:18:03look up on morph Market that are probably 20 thousand dollars
- 1:18:06just for one snake because they have like they have recessive
- 1:18:10like a double recessive or a triple recessive or codominant
- 1:18:12jeans. And they stack all these genes
- 1:18:14therefore were five genes in a snake and it makes their color
- 1:18:17palette look killer, but it took 20 years to develop that snake
- 1:18:21because if you have a recessive gene, like an albino is a
- 1:18:23recessive genotype eyeballs recessive gene.
- 1:18:25But You Oughta Know by now piebald then that's a double
- 1:18:28recessive and you have so you can have recessive.
- 1:18:30Traits are dominant traits are codominant trade It's, and you
- 1:18:33end up. You have to really know.
- 1:18:35Number one, genetics. If you're a reptile breeders,
- 1:18:38you have to know genetics number one.
- 1:18:39Number two, you have to understand like mine right now,
- 1:18:42you have to understand the microclimates.
- 1:18:44So even though they're an Australian species, everyone's
- 1:18:47like, oh, they like the hot desert.
- 1:18:48Well, they like the hot desert. Yes.
- 1:18:50But they like it out in the hot for about an hour and then
- 1:18:52they'll go in the cool shade where there's moisture and
- 1:18:55humidity. And so people killer reptiles
- 1:18:57all the time, because they think, oh, I've got an
- 1:18:59Australian species. That likes it, hot all the time.
- 1:19:01Well, did you give it water? Can they can you have 50 to 60%,
- 1:19:04humidity underneath the log that you have?
- 1:19:06So I you constantly have to understand hot spots in the
- 1:19:10cage. Cool spots in the cage
- 1:19:11microclimates everything has working mechanism.
- 1:19:15That's just again, I like I like the aspect of going home and I
- 1:19:18am not track. And field is what I do as a job.
- 1:19:21But I don't take this job when I get home, I more or less enjoy
- 1:19:26reading about. I was into huge eschatology and
- 1:19:30I was into huge adamic Capri. Adama cages and when God built
- 1:19:34you know when we started in Genesis or we in Revelations and
- 1:19:37where we talk about pre-trib post-trib pre-wrath all this, I
- 1:19:41love during covid time. I love to study that but I also
- 1:19:43love to study my reptiles so traffic cones what I do but I
- 1:19:46don't necessarily take it home with me.
- 1:19:48I can put it away, I'm done coaching, I can put it to the
- 1:19:50side I and that's a I think huge mental aspect of it.
- 1:19:54I think again, if we want to talk about coaches, if you can't
- 1:19:57have a hobby or if you can't put it down, then you're going to be
- 1:20:00in trouble, 20 years in life when you have Nothing else to
- 1:20:03Define you other than track and field.
- 1:20:04And that's where I think a lot of people times they bounce
- 1:20:06around sometimes. It's because they get four,
- 1:20:10five, six years in, you could see somebody kind of, get bad
- 1:20:13boredom sets in mentally. And then they need to go
- 1:20:15somewhere else. And then four or five years sets
- 1:20:17in. They get bored or the head coach
- 1:20:19shifts and gets fired. There's other reasons, just been
- 1:20:21getting bored mentally but I think that's an aspect of it.
- 1:20:24Got to find a hobby. My hobby is I would have to say
- 1:20:27no I don't want to say Christ is my hobby because he's my life.
- 1:20:29That's how I live my life, her butt.
- 1:20:32Reptiles is my hobby is the thing.
- 1:20:33I can go home to and have enjoyment, studying feeding,
- 1:20:36breeding, everything else. And unfortunately, like I had
- 1:20:40just gotten some yellow tree monitors which are awesome.
- 1:20:43They're amazing. And I spent like five to six
- 1:20:45thousand dollars into him this season but now as being a head
- 1:20:48coach, and I'm talking to my reptile people last night, I
- 1:20:51don't think I can keep them because the time frame that the
- 1:20:54head coaching is going to be involved into is not going to
- 1:20:57allow me to keep the species because the humidity they need
- 1:21:00to be sprayed daily. They need meat.
- 1:21:02Daily eggs are have to be checked males to females.
- 1:21:04The male's will eat the eggs, if I'm not there, then we're really
- 1:21:07screwed. So, I added a species that as a
- 1:21:10throws coach. I could handle as a head coach.
- 1:21:11I can't handle. So, so to last subjects here, I
- 1:21:17really want to touch on what I think, is something really
- 1:21:19healthy that again, I don't think we talked a lot about in
- 1:21:22the coaching body that we should be, and I work hard at.
- 1:21:26When I talk about a coach instead of saying, hey, it's a
- 1:21:29coach and blah, blah, blah. I like to always refer to To it
- 1:21:32the person who chooses coach coaching specifically track and
- 1:21:36field as a profession. You know it's one of two
- 1:21:39professions where the title stays with you 24/7.
- 1:21:44So coach right? Maybe your neighbors probably
- 1:21:46know you as coach and you know kids will you've been coaching
- 1:21:49for 20-plus years? Some kid 20 years ago probably
- 1:21:52would see you in. Still call you coach not Nate
- 1:21:56not Nathan you know mr. Finger it's coach the only other
- 1:22:00profession is dr. You I'll have a doctor, losing
- 1:22:03your neighborhood. It's hey, Doc.
- 1:22:04How you doing? You know, you go to the grocery
- 1:22:06store, right? Doc, yeah.
- 1:22:07The dial for, you know, no other profession.
- 1:22:09No one's. There's no, you don't call your
- 1:22:11accountant account. Jim you don't call your.
- 1:22:16Let's go see a therapist with that.
- 1:22:16Be a doctor but you know it's one of those two titles that
- 1:22:19always stays with us and so a lot of times we make that our
- 1:22:22life we are coach. That is first second and third
- 1:22:27and into I don't want to let today's culture because it
- 1:22:29certainly isn't anything new. But in culture In society, we
- 1:22:33like to celebrate the grind, right?
- 1:22:36I go, if you ain't grinding 24/7, if you ain't work on your
- 1:22:39craft as a coach 24/7, you know, you're doing it wrong.
- 1:22:42Have you ever heard finger? Have you ever heard of ir
- 1:22:46Theory? No, so the I stands for the
- 1:22:51individual, you you Nathan finger, and the are too kind of
- 1:22:56make two columns. I it's you that's it's only
- 1:22:58thing in the column you who God made you to be who God wants you
- 1:23:02to be Etc to you. And in the our column, it's all
- 1:23:06your roles. So you just typically have a ton
- 1:23:10of rolls, right? One rules coach.
- 1:23:12One rolls a teammate, you have other People in your athletic
- 1:23:17department that depend on you to do their jobs and vice versa,
- 1:23:21head coach has a role for you son is a role for you.
- 1:23:25Husband is a roll dad, right reptile.
- 1:23:29What are you doing? Are you a retarded?
- 1:23:31What we what we call you were tile keeper.
- 1:23:33Breeder whatever. You know, what would you be?
- 1:23:34Yeah, that's a role. And so you have all these roles
- 1:23:38and I'm missing a ton of roles. I don't mean, I think you said
- 1:23:42you had brothers and sisters, right?
- 1:23:43So your brother is a roll. The mentor for some people
- 1:23:49teacher Etc. There's all these roles, right?
- 1:23:52If you, if you were to rate yourself on any one of those,
- 1:23:56you just pick a role, maybe that as husband, you're like, you
- 1:23:59know, hey, I'm from one to ten one.
- 1:24:01I am failing 10 will have killing it.
- 1:24:04How am I doing as a husband today?
- 1:24:06All right. You can't be an eight nine or a
- 1:24:12ten as a husband. If you can't see what God has
- 1:24:16made you to be, so your eye is a 10, sometimes we feel bad,
- 1:24:21right? He's like, oh man, I'm just not.
- 1:24:22I'm just not a good human. I don't, I don't, I don't.
- 1:24:25It's usually societal pressures, right?
- 1:24:26I'm not doing charity work. I'm not, maybe I'm not in
- 1:24:29married. Maybe you think that's what
- 1:24:30makes you a 10 because you're married to someone, which is not
- 1:24:32true, right? But if you can't see what God
- 1:24:34sees in you, there's a 10 Well then you can't be a ten as a
- 1:24:38coach or an eight or not, you know, eight, nine ten is all
- 1:24:40kind of saying that you're killing.
- 1:24:41If you're waiting on Tim, you can't be an eight nine or ten as
- 1:24:44a dad. If your don't understand what
- 1:24:47God sees in you and what he's made you to be, right?
- 1:24:50So part of that, where I'm getting to is when you talk
- 1:24:53about, hey, I'm a coach and that's important to you.
- 1:24:55That's my profession. That's what supports your
- 1:24:57family, and you love the sport things like that.
- 1:25:01But that's not what the fight. That's not number one like,
- 1:25:04right, my faith. What sounds like I don't want
- 1:25:06that. Your mom sounds like faith is
- 1:25:07number one, maybe family is number two, maybe others is
- 1:25:11number three, and we tend to forget that self has to be in
- 1:25:15there as coaches. You know, it's a very selfless
- 1:25:18profession, you're giving towards others, you're giving
- 1:25:20towards others kids, but there has to be, we sometimes forget
- 1:25:24about that, we have to take care of ourselves that we can take
- 1:25:26care of others. Right?
- 1:25:27With take care of our health. We have to take care of future
- 1:25:29retirement, things like that we have to we have to do things
- 1:25:32that are selfish so that we can become and do self less.
- 1:25:37So I think that what you mentioned they are about, you
- 1:25:39know, hey, you know what, I don't take my work home.
- 1:25:41When I go home I'm I'm in those other roles.
- 1:25:43I'm dad and husband, and son, calling your parents things like
- 1:25:46that. That's not talked about enough
- 1:25:49in our profession here as coaching track.
- 1:25:51We it's easy to get on social media and with our buddies at
- 1:25:55that meats and stuff and talk about.
- 1:25:56Yeah, I went to this clinic and I went to this camp and I was up
- 1:25:58till 10:00 watching this video all over again.
- 1:26:01And then I got up at six and you know headfirst wait practice and
- 1:26:06it's Like wow, where did you? And especially with our job, you
- 1:26:09know weekends it's easy to suck up every weekend recruiting and
- 1:26:12go into meets. I think what you, what you
- 1:26:15express their something that it's not talked about enough.
- 1:26:18And it needs to be talked about more needs to be the common
- 1:26:21talking in my true opinion. After, you know, being a
- 1:26:24coaching Advocate and talking to coaches around the country.
- 1:26:27I just think it's so important and we're kind of dropping the
- 1:26:29ball. Well, I think so that that's
- 1:26:34where I'm at now, the but like I've had times if you ask my
- 1:26:37wife and he's like, man, I guys up at 11:00 at night watching
- 1:26:40film, right? Because I, at some point in
- 1:26:42time, I was still trying to find who I was in the coaching.
- 1:26:46How do I, what am I looking for? How am I doing this?
- 1:26:49How am I? So, I think there is like,
- 1:26:52again, Ebbs and flows of life, like, where I had that first
- 1:26:55four or five years as a young coach is, how do I hone my Self
- 1:27:01as a coach. What am I looking for?
- 1:27:02How am I developing this? That's a big aspect of it and
- 1:27:05then and then obviously coming home and still being a dad.
- 1:27:08And that's that's where I find myself now, more than anything.
- 1:27:11I'm not saying it. When the kids are out of the
- 1:27:13house, I'm like, roof, I haven't done anything track and field
- 1:27:16wise for about five or six years.
- 1:27:17I haven't done any personal development.
- 1:27:18Haven't watched the film, like I don't know.
- 1:27:20Like let me get back caught back up under this a little bit.
- 1:27:22Like I think that's you've got to allow yourself to be able to
- 1:27:25go through some of those abs and falls on those roles and not
- 1:27:29just stick with And if you're honestly, if you're just gonna
- 1:27:32be a parent, a dad than you might not be as successful
- 1:27:34throws coach or coach at all because you've got to be able to
- 1:27:37have time to develop you as a person in that coaching role or
- 1:27:40if you can't just overload. One of the other, if I'm gonna
- 1:27:42just give me a reptile owner and go home and have reptiles, and
- 1:27:44good. Maybe get out of the coaching
- 1:27:46profession and be a reptile guy. So it's how you balance that
- 1:27:50Christ in our life is all about balancing and how does he keep
- 1:27:53us balanced? You know, obviously you keep
- 1:27:55prices is your Sentra quality. My that's my focal point.
- 1:27:58And how do I work that in my head around?
- 1:28:00And everything else. Like when you said you were a
- 1:28:02role as a dad, a husband is this?
- 1:28:03And that I was thinking, everything is a Ministry.
- 1:28:06I'm a, I'm a in my my, as a husband, I'm a minister in my
- 1:28:10role as this semester. It's where he has you.
- 1:28:13That's it's Kingdom building. Thought process, I'm here to,
- 1:28:16he's has me established as my kingdom but in my kingdom
- 1:28:19revolves around the bigger aspect of his kingdom.
- 1:28:21So how do we, how do you put those roles in the mindset of he
- 1:28:26is, he is King, he centrality. How you work?
- 1:28:29That he's given you a His his structure, right?
- 1:28:32So I don't know, I think you're right.
- 1:28:35We don't talk about it enough and I think a lot of times
- 1:28:38coaches are 20 years in, and they are, they've only known
- 1:28:41coaching versus having a hobby, and taking a deep breath and
- 1:28:44doing something else. And knowing who you are as an
- 1:28:47individual, those are key aspects of I love snowboarding
- 1:28:49with my son's in winter time, even though it's in the middle
- 1:28:52of season. I will figure out how to do a
- 1:28:54Friday night up on a mountain somewhere because that's huge to
- 1:28:56what I am. I'm from Montana.
- 1:28:58If I'm not snowboarding if I'm not being a husband, if I I'm
- 1:29:00not going to football practice with my twelve-year-old.
- 1:29:02If I'm not having reptiles. It doesn't it does.
- 1:29:05I'm not doing what I need to do to recharge my batteries once
- 1:29:09every summer. I like to head out west, I
- 1:29:11didn't get to this summer which is fine because I got a new role
- 1:29:13but I need to be out in Montana for a week or South Dakota for a
- 1:29:17week or I need to be some. Those are recharging batteries
- 1:29:19and getting you back ground into your feet and then stepping back
- 1:29:22into the coaching role, I knew we would find something that we
- 1:29:26didn't have in common. I'm never snowboarding.
- 1:29:28I hate snow. I'm in Illinois.
- 1:29:31I married a Chicago girls. I ain't Leavin.
- 1:29:33But yeah man, and I ain't going to Montana.
- 1:29:36I camping, that's I assume. When you say Montana, sounds
- 1:29:39like, oh, you roughing it. Yeah, you know, roughing it to
- 1:29:42me is, I had to choose a Hampton over Hilton, Garden Inn, man.
- 1:29:44I'm just, you know, I'm not that tough.
- 1:29:46All right, that's why I was, I would never been a thrower.
- 1:29:48Not not Tough Enough at all at all.
- 1:29:52Well, thanks. You know.
- 1:29:53You actually, you help. Any kind of change my thinking,
- 1:29:55their fingers you're talking about when I talk about, you
- 1:29:59know, the roles and God family Other Self, you know, you're
- 1:30:02not. I don't believe you can be a
- 1:30:04coach number one, two and three like your professional no other
- 1:30:07profession. Ask for that.
- 1:30:09No nothing else business owner etcetera.
- 1:30:11That might be the closest but still but what you kind of
- 1:30:14helped with my thinking there's the evolution of the person who
- 1:30:19chooses to be a coach so maybe it is different rear 12345 of a
- 1:30:23coach Maybe. You need to be twenty four,
- 1:30:25seven, ish, coach different things that play into the areas.
- 1:30:28Are they married or not? You know, because obviously the
- 1:30:31then you're responsible for other people but maybe when
- 1:30:34you're, I was just, I was a single 20 year old, you know,
- 1:30:37coach when I first got into, I don't have responsibility for
- 1:30:39anybody else. Outside of my athletes, I could
- 1:30:42just do nothing but that, and then, as you move along, now I
- 1:30:45think about, you know, wife and two kids, I'm gonna go, I
- 1:30:47couldn't, I couldn't do that with, you know, I know what my
- 1:30:51personality would be and it would I would be taken away from
- 1:30:53me. Fatherhood in my husbandry, for
- 1:30:55sure. So.
- 1:30:56But that Evolution and then, so, maybe that means coaches in your
- 1:31:00role, 20 years on 30 years on maybe, that means the Evolution
- 1:31:04for that person who chooses to be a coach, is to help the
- 1:31:08younger people. The newer people that are
- 1:31:09getting into coaching. Hey, you know, it's at some
- 1:31:12point you're gonna have to, you're going to do this a little
- 1:31:14different, you know, I know you. I know you enjoy watching track
- 1:31:17on TV 24/7, and being at a track meet every weekend.
- 1:31:20And yeah, yeah. It's some point.
- 1:31:23It's going to Be a little different, doesn't have to mean
- 1:31:26less passion. Doesn't have to mean less
- 1:31:28proficiency, it just means it has maybe be different.
- 1:31:31Maybe has to go down the priority totem pole if you will,
- 1:31:35from there. Yeah.
- 1:31:36You really like there really is, you're talking.
- 1:31:38I kind of helped me change that. Okay, man.
- 1:31:40Hey, let's wrap up here. You are the new director of
- 1:31:43track and field. It can State program that has
- 1:31:45had many many successes every year.
- 1:31:48There are athletes that are at Nationals.
- 1:31:50This is an expectation of the program at least from the
- 1:31:53outside, you mate. Tell me different which means
- 1:31:55you probably would have been the new director if that's different
- 1:31:58for you. What's got you excited, man?
- 1:32:00You got a new year coming up new coaches.
- 1:32:02You mentioned the coach from Central Michigan.
- 1:32:03I believe he's an Alum, right? I always get excited when a
- 1:32:06lumps, come back to their alma mater.
- 1:32:09What's got you excited coming up here and the next couple Seasons
- 1:32:11as you start putting your fingerprints here on the
- 1:32:14program. You know, I just, I think the,
- 1:32:19the biggest aspect of what we need to do is be consistent with
- 1:32:24the coaches that are here, so that my my excitement is the
- 1:32:27staff that I have now is I think going to remain for the next
- 1:32:32four to six years, right? That is in the continuity.
- 1:32:35Like, I think, I think the biggest aspect of not being able
- 1:32:39to win conference year, after year, after year is, just when
- 1:32:42you have a different coach, you have to get on the same page and
- 1:32:44it'll earn. New system, and who do they
- 1:32:46recruit? Who they not recruit.
- 1:32:47And so, are we filling the right, gaps, or with filling the
- 1:32:49right holes? And if you have a turnover after
- 1:32:52turnover after turnover becomes a little bit, I don't know.
- 1:32:55It becomes just, it does not everyone's on the same page at
- 1:32:57all given time. So I think, once that page
- 1:33:00becomes can, I think that's my goal is to just be the top
- 1:33:06player in our conference championships 1st.
- 1:33:08I mean, that's I think that's the administration wise wants to
- 1:33:10see that and we, you know, for the individuals of the Getting
- 1:33:15them championship rings and having them be able to really
- 1:33:19feel the success over and over and over again.
- 1:33:21That's crucial. But I also want to be relevant
- 1:33:25possibly on the on the NCAA stage.
- 1:33:27So is it is it a thing where you can be top 20 to top 25 year
- 1:33:32after your at the national you have the right people that can
- 1:33:37that can get the job done. I mean it's really fun and, you
- 1:33:40know, one, two, three people. I had Danielle who end up
- 1:33:43winning The shop of one year in fourth, in The discus, in the
- 1:33:46same year and she was just because of her alone.
- 1:33:49We, I think we were, like, 15th in the country just because of
- 1:33:51her points. So it's getting the right people
- 1:33:53in the right place to win the conference Championship year
- 1:33:57after year, and see how well you can do at the Big Show.
- 1:34:01Well, you know, knowing you for a while.
- 1:34:03Now, haven't listened to your story here.
- 1:34:04Knowing the, you talk about consistency, your personal
- 1:34:08consistency there at Kent State, I have no doubts that you know
- 1:34:12what you done and this is no, you know?
- 1:34:15Good friends with Bill Lawson and he did an amazing job, you
- 1:34:17know, it's going to be different.
- 1:34:19I think it's a different person in the head chair but I think
- 1:34:23you know the things that he built that, you know he added
- 1:34:25onto it window built and he had gone to what the coach before
- 1:34:28them. I think it's just a continual
- 1:34:30building process and I'm excited to see it man because you are in
- 1:34:33a tough conference that did not get weaker.
- 1:34:36By the way, maybe got tougher as it could, you know, the coaches
- 1:34:39continue to develop and we'll see what new things happen at
- 1:34:42Akron. Kind of the Rival of Kent State
- 1:34:44there down the road. And so that'll be interesting to
- 1:34:46see. But man, we're excited to see
- 1:34:48it. We think big things are coming
- 1:34:50and big continually big things are coming.
- 1:34:53It'll be exciting to see. You know, you're you're like,
- 1:34:56said that your fingerprint that you put on it and I fully expect
- 1:35:00it'll be 80 throwers and 20 jumpers and sprinters and
- 1:35:02distant sites. I'm excited just to say 100,000
- 1:35:06throwers at Kent Ohio. But that's one thing though.
- 1:35:10Like, literally, there's no way to, I'm not going to change my
- 1:35:12throw. I'm not going to go down.
- 1:35:13I'm not going to go up. I think you have to be
- 1:35:16consistent, like, I'm good and I give good points to the team,
- 1:35:20but if I had 80 points, the team number one, I would kill our.
- 1:35:23We couldn't win conference or it be too busy as the head coach.
- 1:35:26So, you better have you got you have to know your role, just
- 1:35:29keep consistent consistency again.
- 1:35:31Know what you've done in the past, continue to do what you've
- 1:35:33done, figure out how to get that done.
- 1:35:35Don't add, don't take it away. Yeah, I think Ski.
- 1:35:38I love it man. I love it.
- 1:35:39And I'm so thankful man. You know, you're you're just
- 1:35:44starting to learn a bunch of new things, right?
- 1:35:46As the new director, and you're starting to put your plans and
- 1:35:49actually start to create your plans and then put them to
- 1:35:51action. You're hiring Etc.
- 1:35:53You know, the kids. Probably come back to school
- 1:35:54here any day now. So cross country season is
- 1:35:57literally a blink away which means fall practice is a snap
- 1:36:00away. You know, for you to give us
- 1:36:02today's time and means the world to us.
- 1:36:05You know, your journey is important.
- 1:36:08It's one of the reasons why we started this podcast because we
- 1:36:10truly believe that people who choose to be track coaches, your
- 1:36:12journey is important. What's awesome about your
- 1:36:15journey. Specifically, if it were a book
- 1:36:18you know, if it was values the example of a book, we might
- 1:36:22maybe we're getting close to halfway through that book.
- 1:36:25Which means there is a whole mess, more to go man.
- 1:36:28There's a lot of chapters to be written in your journey.
- 1:36:31And you know it's like you're barely at the 200 meter Mark for
- 1:36:35for 400. I have no Hammer analogy for
- 1:36:37that. So I'm just Use the 400 barely
- 1:36:40get into that 200-meter split, which is exciting because you
- 1:36:42have a lot of things built up, and there's a lot of things
- 1:36:45ahead of you for the program and the golden flash, which is
- 1:36:48pretty exciting man. And so, I'm just so thankful for
- 1:36:50your time today. And being here with us today, I
- 1:36:52appreciate you guys. Put me on has been fun and I was
- 1:36:55like, awesome, man. I told you we'd have fun man
- 1:36:58throwers. I don't know, they're a
- 1:36:59different breed and I mean that in all the best ways that's one
- 1:37:02of his roles by the way, throw her right?
- 1:37:04I mean it's quite amazing. Thank you for being here today
- 1:37:07and listening to us. Again, just super humbled that
- 1:37:09you spent any time with us. And here we just did an hour and
- 1:37:12a half. We'll just another amazing
- 1:37:13person. Who thank goodness, you know,
- 1:37:15this guy could have been an art teacher.
- 1:37:16I wouldn't have interviewed him if he was an art teacher
- 1:37:18somewhere. Right?
- 1:37:18Thank goodness. He became a track coach and has
- 1:37:21affected so many young, people's lives and positive manner.
- 1:37:24So many of his kids have gone to be coaches, have gone on to be
- 1:37:27parents business owners. I mean, that's the real impact
- 1:37:31of a track coach. Whether you're at Kent, Ohio,
- 1:37:33Eufaula Alabama, Los Angeles, California, don't matter.
- 1:37:37You affect young people in positive manners and that is
- 1:37:40your ultimate, Ultimate gift to this world for being a track
- 1:37:44coach, man. I'm just so thankful for you.
