- 0:27Welcome in to a very exciting episode of The Scene.
- 0:30I am your host Bubba Starts, and with me today is founder of Operation Combating Veteran
- 0:35Suicide and Mrs.
- 0:36South Dakota International, Charlotte Rupp.
- 0:38Charlotte, welcome to the show.
- 0:40Thank you.
- 0:41It's great to be here.
- 0:43Well, it's so nice to have you here where we were together physically this weekend.
- 0:49We just got done with a big event we threw together out at Kathmandu Campground.
- 0:54We had an absolutely fantastic time.
- 0:57But before we get into all the stuff that we just did, I want you to go ahead and tell us a
- 1:02little bit about you and a little bit about your nonprofit before we get too far down the
- 1:07rabbit hole.
- 1:08Absolutely.
- 1:09Thanks.
- 1:09So Operation Combating Veteran Suicide is a nonprofit that my husband and I founded.
- 1:15My husband is also a veteran.
- 1:17And we have found that over the years of working with veterans now for over two decades
- 1:22that what veterans need is help with housing, help with employment, and help with mental
- 1:27resources.
- 1:29So through our nonprofit, what we're doing is working with veterans to get them into
- 1:35employment, take care of their housing for them, and just really get them on a structured
- 1:39program that makes them successful coming back in if they've fallen on hard times.
- 1:44Of course, we've got substance issues, those kinds of things, PTSD, and of course, the
- 1:50suicide attempts.
- 1:51I mean, we are losing no less than twenty two veterans a day.
- 1:55The number is rising right now, which is just horrifying to me, and that is across The US,
- 2:01but we need to take care of that.
- 2:03They served us, and it's now time for us to serve them and get them back into a great place
- 2:09where they're successful with with family housing, their mental health, everything.
- 2:15So that's what Operation Combating Veteran Suicide does.
- 2:18We do have a two year program that they are on.
- 2:21They have to stay employed, which we help with the employment.
- 2:24We work with several employers that literally call me and go, I have this position.
- 2:29Do you have a veteran that can fill it?
- 2:31So we do that and then, of course, assisting with their housing.
- 2:35It is just incredible the work that you are doing.
- 2:39I think something we hit on when we were talking this weekend was the structure of it.
- 2:44For a lot of these, guys and gals, coming out of the military, you've lived in that structure
- 2:50since you were, you know, coming out of high school, most of them.
- 2:53Right?
- 2:54You're moving from one system into another and and and into an institution.
- 3:00And it's a lot something that we talk about guys coming out of the prison system that you
- 3:05you're institutionalized.
- 3:07And very much in the same way that can happen to you in the military as well because
- 3:12everything is very cut and dried and kind of laid out for you.
- 3:16You don't have to do a lot of thinking on your own necessarily to know where, your needs are
- 3:21being met or the job that you're doing.
- 3:24And and there's so much that is, you know, kind of built into the structure of our military.
- 3:30But when you're out, all of that goes away, and that can be a very jarring feeling for a lot of
- 3:37these veterans, I'm sure.
- 3:39Can you kinda speak to the the shakeup that happens at the end of a at the end of someone's
- 3:44service?
- 3:46Well and that is the thing.
- 3:47It's an end.
- 3:48I mean, it's over.
- 3:49It's done.
- 3:50I mean, most of them do not come out of the military having a job in society.
- 3:55So they come out and flounder.
- 3:57They've gone in at 18.
- 3:58They've never had to apply for a job.
- 4:00They've never had to do a resume.
- 4:02You know, most of those things have not happened, or they've done a military resume
- 4:05because they were moving rank or, you know, whatever they were doing there.
- 4:09But, you know, they've not had to do the, how do I get an apartment?
- 4:13You know?
- 4:14Yes.
- 4:14They have the steps to it, but what is the process of bill paying?
- 4:17And, you know, they live on base or they come out or, they just fall on hard times, they've
- 4:23been at war, they're coming back, their PTSD is horrifying, experience was bad, just very hard
- 4:30life things, and there's just not a next step.
- 4:33There's not a next step of, Hey, we need to talk to people.
- 4:36Get into a peer group, you know, of other veterans that are in the same boat and talk
- 4:40through what you're feeling.
- 4:42It's so important for them to still feel like they have some structure.
- 4:46And then, you know, with us, that's kind of what we do is we give them very hard structure
- 4:50in the beginning, and then over the two years, by the end, they're doing it on their own.
- 4:55They know, you know, how to just make life happen outside of the military being like, you
- 5:00have to be here.
- 5:01Here's, you know, here's lunch and dinner.
- 5:03You know, they come out and they just need that next step.
- 5:08And so that's what we are for them.
- 5:11And it's something, obviously, a a need that's not really being met by very many other
- 5:18organizations.
- 5:19We spoke about, you know, obviously, the government has the veteran affairs and these
- 5:24things, but their resources are so limited because you're trying to cover this the whole
- 5:29country, right, and all these thousands of veterans that are that are leaving the service
- 5:33every year.
- 5:33So it's understandable that there can be holes inside of the VA or inside of the other
- 5:39government associate or, you know, organizations that are there to help veterans.
- 5:44So it really comes down to people like yourself in the private sector taking some ownership of
- 5:50it and going, well, we are going to help these people.
- 5:54And I know that, you know, while operation combating veteran suicide as an entity is
- 5:59relatively new, This is something that you've had a passion for for many, many years now and
- 6:05that you were doing long before you ever put a name to it.
- 6:08Can you talk a little bit about your history helping veterans, what was kind of the the
- 6:14genesis of Operation Combating Veteran Suicide?
- 6:19So for me, I've worked with veterans for over twenty years in some capacity, whether it is my
- 6:24background is hospice.
- 6:27So I've always worked with veterans on the no veteran dies alone, so I will go and stay with
- 6:32veterans when they're passing.
- 6:34I've always been helping other organizations.
- 6:37Casey and I have put in lots of time, effort, and money into buying boots, helping with rent,
- 6:43buying food, you know, the things that veterans need coming out, sending stuff overseas.
- 6:48So we've always had this passion that we were going to make a legacy for us.
- 6:56And when I became missus South Dakota International, somebody made a comment to me,
- 7:02and she said, make this your legacy.
- 7:05And I was like, oh my gosh.
- 7:08I've got it.
- 7:09And this, you know, just kind of became a full realm.
- 7:12You know, as idea people, we're always building ideas and rolling forward with them.
- 7:17I finally just named it.
- 7:18We're not doing anything different than what we've done other than now we are a true
- 7:24nonprofit, which is great.
- 7:26We are getting help from individual donors, corporate donors, and we love that now.
- 7:32Goal is for us in the next two years is to build an apartment complex that will help house
- 7:39them for the two year program that they're there.
- 7:41They'll be in their own place figuring out each step by themselves, but right now in the
- 7:47interim, we're just working with other places to house, and it's working great.
- 7:51But we want them to be doing it on their own and feeling like it's their place, not like a
- 7:56domiciliary where they're all kind of housed together or a transitional house where there
- 8:00are a bunch of them together.
- 8:01It's gonna be their own place that they have to deal with.
- 8:06And a huge step in, you know, building back some of these people.
- 8:11I know I know a lot of the veterans that you work with, you know, are dealing with substance
- 8:17abuse issues, are dealing with severe PTSD.
- 8:20They're finding it very hard to operate in the world at all, you know, much less having to
- 8:26deal with, you know, paying all the bills and worrying about how to exist in your life.
- 8:32Sometimes just waking up and getting out of bed, you know, because of the physical ailments
- 8:37incurred during their service can be very hard.
- 8:40So I think what you are doing is just so important and such a vital cog in the wheel of
- 8:48helping our veterans to assimilate to civilian life.
- 8:52And I love the idea of a, you know, an a complex, a community, right, that is all
- 8:59veterans, and they can kind of rely on each other a little bit in that space.
- 9:04So I think the long term vision for what you're doing is just incredible.
- 9:08And not only to do it once, but to have a repeatable process that hopefully one day we
- 9:14can take, you know, all over the country and wherever it's needed.
- 9:18We have a formula then to provide for veterans anywhere we go.
- 9:23Obviously, starting close to home here in South Dakota, a big congratulations to you, you know,
- 9:29on winning the pageant, the missus South Dakota International.
- 9:33It's not something I know that you really set out to do.
- 9:37It wasn't necessarily a dream of yours to enter the pageant world, But can you talk about the,
- 9:45the platform now that the pageant and this whole new world has given you for the good that
- 9:53you want to do in the world?
- 9:55Yeah.
- 9:56You know, the pageant's been huge now for me.
- 9:58It was brought to me that I should go for Missus South Dakota International.
- 10:03I've never done pageants in my life, so I it's not something I was a little girl running
- 10:07around as a pageant girl or teenager or any of that first time ever and now have the title of
- 10:13missus South Dakota International.
- 10:16It has brought so much to me.
- 10:17You know?
- 10:18I I said that, you know, it just wasn't something I had, like, this grandiose idea to
- 10:23do, but I decided I was gonna do it.
- 10:25I think for myself, self confidence, I'm getting me out there.
- 10:29I love being able to help support the veterans, and I knew this would also help with the
- 10:33platform.
- 10:34I mean, it has.
- 10:35Lots of reach outs.
- 10:36People wanna know what my platform is.
- 10:38They wanna see what I'm doing.
- 10:39They follow me because I am, you know, not only missus South Dakota, but I've now got this
- 10:45amazing nonprofit.
- 10:47Going into the pageantry in Tennessee in July is when I compete for international, and, you
- 10:53know, it's gonna be a great platform there too.
- 10:55I'm super excited to get it out to the judges.
- 10:59There are some very affluent people that show up to these, and I can promise you, my
- 11:05nonprofit will be first and foremost in front of them.
- 11:09And that is more what the the pageant and the title provided.
- 11:15Right?
- 11:15It is a larger platform for you to share all the good that you are doing out there in the
- 11:20world and to to use it to tell people and to bring in, you know, more funding and more
- 11:26awareness and hopefully inspire others to not only give to your organization, but to maybe
- 11:33start their own causes for veterans in their area.
- 11:37I mean, I I know both of us dream very, very big, but there's no way that we can help every
- 11:43veteran out there.
- 11:44Right?
- 11:45We would love to and we would love to, like I said, build these formulas that that can do
- 11:50more, but we need several organizations that are filling different gaps.
- 11:56Right?
- 11:57From putting boots literally on people's feet to get them onto the ground or, you know, for
- 12:03the the larger vision of providing this kind of transitional housing between, you know, getting
- 12:10out or going from the domiciliary and coming out of, you know, a a substance abuse program
- 12:15or a, you know, a traumatic program, even just coming out of the hospital.
- 12:20Right?
- 12:20Some of these, you know, veterans coming out of the military are getting medically discharged.
- 12:25And what about them?
- 12:26What if they have no family to go to?
- 12:29So there's just so many people and so many avenues that we can access.
- 12:34And both of us using the platforms that we've now built for ourselves, an award winning
- 12:38podcast, the beauty pageant queen, to to go out and to spread the word that not only do these
- 12:45organizations need help, but other veterans need help too.
- 12:50Maybe, you know, there's plenty of veterans out there that maybe don't need the housing and
- 12:55don't need this, but maybe they could use just a group to talk to about the mental health
- 12:59aspects of, you know, dealing with, you know, the PTSD or just being a veteran these days
- 13:07isn't an easy thing as as well.
- 13:10Well, and I think it's so important to realize is that, you know, yeah, we are operation
- 13:14combating veteran suicide.
- 13:15My goal is to be there before we've had an attempt.
- 13:19Things happen, though.
- 13:20We know attempts happen, and, unfortunately, sometimes they're successful.
- 13:24So for me, it's getting to them before.
- 13:26You know, let's talk about it.
- 13:28Know you're having these stresses.
- 13:30You're having you know, just coming back to the real world, even if you weren't in combat, even
- 13:35if you, you know, weren't fighting and, you know, wasn't super stressful, it's stressful
- 13:41because you're just back out.
- 13:44You know?
- 13:45You're back to where you were the day before you went in.
- 13:48You don't have a job.
- 13:49They still need help.
- 13:50I mean, even if they have money, even if they're doing good, they still need the
- 13:55support.
- 13:56They need to know they're taken care of.
- 13:58They need to know, you know, I'm here to help.
- 14:01Great.
- 14:01They have a beautiful home.
- 14:03Cool.
- 14:03I'm glad you have that home outside of base.
- 14:05How are you paying for that now that you're out?
- 14:07Like, what's the stuff for you?
- 14:09I mean and they come out stressed.
- 14:11Right, Charlotte.
- 14:12I hadn't even thought about that.
- 14:14It is someone who has bought a home, gets a thirty year mortgage, has a twenty year career
- 14:21in the military, and retires from that, and now has, for the first time in their life, still
- 14:28has a decade worth of mortgage payments to pay on their own.
- 14:34And what a, yeah.
- 14:36Exactly.
- 14:37What a stressful situation that must beat all of a sudden, you know, be walking away from
- 14:41that steady income and and all of those things.
- 14:44And in most cases, the military is not necessarily providing you with skills that are
- 14:50applicable in the private sector.
- 14:54Know, some are, but if you are a frontline, you know, a a frontline soldier, your skills are
- 15:02are not translating in the same way to private sector and all of a sudden, you know, taking
- 15:09orders from someone who maybe hasn't earned your respect by being of a higher rank.
- 15:16And, yeah, it's just a there's so many intricacies to and each veteran's story is
- 15:24different.
- 15:25How do we meet them?
- 15:26How do we meet them where they're at?
- 15:28How do we help these people where they're at?
- 15:31And to move them into a place that's going to be a place where they can build a successful
- 15:37life outside of their military service.
- 15:40Absolutely.
- 15:42Absolutely.
- 15:42And that's what we're here to do.
- 15:43We're here to get them pointed in the right direction from the beginning wherever that
- 15:48beginning is for them now.
- 15:51Awesome.
- 15:52Well, let's talk about what we have going on currently.
- 15:55I know we just stepped away from an awesome event, which has given us a little insight now
- 16:00into what more we could be doing together.
- 16:02But we got a couple events coming up in the next few months.
- 16:05I want you to go ahead and and plug away.
- 16:08We do.
- 16:09August 16, we are having Operation Combating Veteran Suicides Poker Run.
- 16:16It will be starting in Sturgis and ending in Rapid.
- 16:19We are riding the beautiful Black Hills.
- 16:21We are so excited.
- 16:23We will have five stops that day.
- 16:25Our writers' lunch is included.
- 16:27We're gonna have some drawings, a silent auction, auction, some music there at the end.
- 16:34It's gonna just really be a great day, but we would love the support.
- 16:38You can go online and register already, and that is at
- 16:43operationcombatingveteranssuicide.com.
- 16:46Or the simple thing which I'm gonna, as we go in time, transition over to is 0c-vs.com.
- 16:53Our name is very long, so you'll hear Bubba and I throw around, it's OCVS.
- 16:58I mean, because it's a lot of words to get out of your mouth.
- 17:02But so we have that happening August 16.
- 17:05Registration, there is an early bird registration for that.
- 17:08All bikers, cars, whatever, are welcome.
- 17:11We just want everybody to join us and support our veterans that day, and we will it's just
- 17:16gonna be a really great day starting at 10AM.
- 17:19So great things going on that day.
- 17:21Would love to have you guys with us for that, so please join us on that one.
- 17:26And then, Bubba, do you wanna announce the next one or you want me to give the dates and then
- 17:29you can talk a little bit?
- 17:30Because there's a lot going on that so we had a
- 17:33crazy will announce it and you can tell them about what's going on because I don't even know
- 17:38what you have planned.
- 17:39So the last weekend in September.
- 17:42Correct?
- 17:43I don't even know what those dates were.
- 17:44Sixth.
- 17:45We're gonna come in on Friday the twenty sixth, Saturday, the twenty seventh, and we're gonna
- 17:50leave the morning of the twenty eighth.
- 17:51And when I say we, that means everybody listening to this, we want you guys to join us.
- 17:57That's right.
- 17:57So we're gonna go back to Kathmandu RV Park And Campground outside of Sturgis.
- 18:02That's right off Exit 34, very close to the Black Hills National Cemetery.
- 18:07Great space out there.
- 18:09It will be kind of an end of the season party for them, but also giving us another chance to
- 18:14get everyone together to build some community, to build awareness about OCVS, and to continue
- 18:22to do good out there in the world.
- 18:24So we have a lot of space.
- 18:26We have multiple days that you know there's gonna be music if the scene projects are
- 18:31involved.
- 18:31So we got that going on.
- 18:33We're gonna have a lot more stuff.
- 18:35Anything that you know we will be doing that weekend, Charlotte?
- 18:40Yep.
- 18:40We're gonna bring back the singer songwriter contest.
- 18:44We want you know, we think that is a great thing to do.
- 18:47That was so much fun.
- 18:48And the talent here in the Black Hills, Bubba asked me to judge, and I did.
- 18:53And I already told him that I've retired from that.
- 18:56It was way too stressful.
- 18:59He did tell me I wasn't retiring, but that's okay.
- 19:02It the talent's amazing.
- 19:05So we absolutely wanna drum up more of that.
- 19:09Bubba doesn't know it yet, but his band will be there playing because it was amazing.
- 19:14He's amazing.
- 19:15I think we wanna do a few other bands.
- 19:17We'll get out there.
- 19:18We're for sure gonna do an opening night band.
- 19:20I don't know if that's Bubba's band.
- 19:22Him and I really after Saturday, we're like, we just need to debrief and that's what or on
- 19:27Sunday.
- 19:28Sorry.
- 19:28We just need to debrief, and so now he's kinda getting my vision as we go here.
- 19:33So, you know, but it is.
- 19:35It's gonna be lots of music.
- 19:37We're gonna do probably some cornhole tournament, maybe horseshoe volleyball.
- 19:42I mean, we're just really gonna do some fun outside.
- 19:45It'll still be warm here.
- 19:47If it's not, we'll pivot like we did this weekend.
- 19:51We'll pivot until we're worn a circle around us.
- 19:54Well, it doesn't matter.
- 19:55Right.
- 19:56Right.
- 19:56We've gotten really good at that.
- 19:58We'll have some good food.
- 19:59I mean, we're really just gonna make it a great weekend.
- 20:01So what we're asking is everybody come in.
- 20:04I will get stuff put together so that and Kathmandu's already ready for people to
- 20:08register out there to stay.
- 20:10But they can take campers.
- 20:13I mean, they can take any kind of just tents, whatever.
- 20:16We'll make it work.
- 20:17They have hookups out there.
- 20:20But coming in on Friday, and then we'll be there Friday night, we'll have a great concert.
- 20:25Saturday, we will do the showcases.
- 20:28Lots of stuff to come on this, Bubba, but
- 20:31it's gonna be incredible.
- 20:33I can't thank you enough for for diving in headfirst on our event, you know, this last
- 20:39weekend.
- 20:40It was absolutely incredible to see how it all came together in a very, very short amount of
- 20:46time.
- 20:47Most people wouldn't even be courageous enough to, attempt it.
- 20:53And I thought not only did we attempt, but we succeeded on so many levels.
- 20:58And and mostly just proving to ourselves that, hey, we can really do something special when we
- 21:03put our minds to it.
- 21:05And I think that was the first start for me is, okay.
- 21:08You have this space.
- 21:09You have this platform.
- 21:11How are you going to use it?
- 21:13And now that we have a great handle on that, it's time to just kinda put the hammer down and
- 21:19to to get to work doing more of them.
- 21:21So absolutely thrilled to be working with you again, Charlotte.
- 21:25Remember, August 16, there is the OCVS Poker Run that will be, in the Black Hills starting
- 21:32in Sturgis and ending in Rapid City.
- 21:35And then September and leaving on the twenty eighth back at Kathmandu RV Park And
- 21:42Campground, Exit 34 outside of Sturgis.
- 21:46Lots of great stuff.
- 21:47Keep your eyes peeled for more information coming on that.
- 21:50And I think we're gonna have some more, some more programming for you coming from me and
- 21:55Charlotte as well just to keep everybody in the know with, future events, any news from OCVS
- 22:01that we can share on a more consistent basis.
- 22:04So keep your eyes peeled for yet another podcast from the scene projects, and, we just
- 22:10appreciate you all for tuning in and supporting not just our programming, but the great causes
- 22:16that are behind us as well.
- 22:18So, Charlotte, thank you so much for being on the show.
- 22:21Do you need to plug anything else before you go?
