- 0:00Larry Wilson: Hi, this is Larry Wilson, and this is How to Talk to Humans.
- 0:04Larry Wilson: This is the podcast that shows you how to improve your communication skills.
- 0:10Larry Wilson: Are you looking to get a better job?
- 0:12Larry Wilson: Are you looking to find a relationship?
- 0:15Larry Wilson: Are you trying to do things in your life that have you have improved you so far?
- 0:22Larry Wilson: I can show you so easily how to change that.
- 0:25Larry Wilson: Now, I can only do it with humans.
- 0:27Larry Wilson: If you're looking to deal with vampires and all these extra pretzels, this is not the joke.
- 0:33Larry Wilson: But if you're really looking to improve your skills, I can show you what I've learned in 40 years in the show business working with the biggest celebrities and superstars in the world.
- 0:47Larry Wilson: And their secrets are unbelievable.
- 0:52Larry Wilson: What I'm going to be teaching you during the course of this podcast every week are tools that you can use to communicate toward success.
- 1:04Larry Wilson: I promised you today that we're talking about stuff that will make you more valuable today.
- 1:13Larry Wilson: And that is as simple as focusing on clarity in your message, whatever your message may be.
- 1:24Larry Wilson: Now, Adam works for a huge, gigantic, I would attempt to say Fortune 50 Corporation.
- 1:36Larry Wilson: And the things he does, I guarantee you, I couldn't possibly understand.
- 1:41Larry Wilson: There's tech stuff involved.
- 1:43Larry Wilson: It's way outside my wheelhouse, I guarantee.
- 1:47Larry Wilson: And so I don't know.
- 1:48Larry Wilson: I've never really talked with Adam about this, you know, about what he's doing there.
- 1:53Larry Wilson: But whatever your message is, whether I say whether it's goods that you create or services you provide, your clarity in how you communicate that to people.
- 2:11Larry Wilson: You don't have to be tricky, you don't have to be a Madison Avenue copywriter.
- 2:18Larry Wilson: And I I have nothing against Madison Avenue copywriters.
- 2:21Larry Wilson: I've seen some copywriters write some brilliant stuff.
- 2:26Larry Wilson: But I promise you that the clearer you are in your communication, the more valuable you are to your clientele.
- 2:40Larry Wilson: Because they don't have to struggle trying to unravel what the message is.
- 2:48Larry Wilson: And you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna throw a few things out here and please everyone forgive me if I insult somebody's company or something else.
- 2:58Larry Wilson: I don't intend to.
- 2:59Larry Wilson: I'm not trying to be mean, I'm not trying to put anyone down.
- 3:05Larry Wilson: I just can't help because of my bias.
- 3:09Larry Wilson: My bias is towards good communication.
- 3:12Larry Wilson: And when I see bad communication, especially from successful companies, it blows my mind.
- 3:20Larry Wilson: But it's also a good sign.
- 3:23Larry Wilson: If these hugely successful companies can make these terrible errors and still be successful, well, think how much better they could be if they weren't making these huge errors.
- 3:34Larry Wilson: You have an advantage over them.
- 3:36Larry Wilson: You know, uh, if you I don't know, I for some reason Coca-Cola jumped into my mind because it's a pretty big company and been around forever.
- 3:48Larry Wilson: I don't really see any problems with their communication.
- 3:51Larry Wilson: I think some of their uh some of their copy is genius.
- 3:57Larry Wilson: The pause that refreshes.
- 4:00Larry Wilson: Ooh, God, that's that I think that's great.
- 4:04Larry Wilson: I don't know, maybe it's old-fashioned, but to me, it really is the pause that refreshes.
- 4:12Larry Wilson: Uh to me, it seems like whoever came up with it, brilliant, brilliant.
- 4:17Larry Wilson: So I I only think of that, I don't think they have any problems, but I think if you work for Coca-Cola, it's probably hard.
- 4:25Larry Wilson: It's like trying to turn a uh a gigantic cruise ship around, you know.
- 4:32Larry Wilson: Uh early in my career, I was on a cruise ship in Alaska that ran into an island, and uh it was quite dramatic.
- 4:40Larry Wilson: And they it's a whole wild tale.
- 4:44Larry Wilson: But no one could understand why that happened.
- 4:46Larry Wilson: I knew perfectly well.
- 4:48Larry Wilson: You can't just spin the wheel and the cruise ship goes, woo, and it doesn't work like that, you know, when you're moving how many hundreds of thousands of tons of weight, everything takes forever.
- 5:03Larry Wilson: And so I think of that in the same way with a gigantic company that you might have a brilliant idea.
- 5:09Larry Wilson: It's not going to be easy.
- 5:11Larry Wilson: Those of us who are entrepreneurs, those of us who maybe own small businesses or are heading a department in a business where it's us and maybe 10 people or 20 people on our team, much easier for us to affect certain things.
- 5:31Larry Wilson: From all the days when I was in casinos, I was working, and I would wear makeup on stage, uh, and my skin hates makeup.
- 5:38Larry Wilson: I got into the habit of washing my face very carefully to try and get it off at the end of the night.
- 5:44Larry Wilson: And I got this uh new version of a brush that's on ad.
- 5:49Larry Wilson: It was from this company called ClairSonic, but I think they had the design they had that I used for many years, I thought was great.
- 5:56Larry Wilson: I think it was meant for women.
- 5:58Larry Wilson: And their word that's maybe some men wouldn't want to use it because it was for women.
- 6:02Larry Wilson: I frankly, of course, could care less.
- 6:05Larry Wilson: Uh all I care about is does it work or not?
- 6:08Larry Wilson: So they sort of retrofitted and made a manly version that was they call alpha fit.
- 6:16Larry Wilson: So you're the alpha dog, and you're extremely fit, I guess, if you use this.
- 6:21Larry Wilson: All right.
- 6:22Larry Wilson: The powerful clean your face deserves.
- 6:27Larry Wilson: Now, I looked at that and read the powerful clean your face deserves.
- 6:36Larry Wilson: I could not figure out what it meant.
- 6:39Larry Wilson: Now, maybe this is just a sign that there's something wrong with me.
- 6:44Larry Wilson: Entirely possible.
- 6:47Larry Wilson: But I thought, obviously, what it should say, the powerful, clean that your face deserves.
- 6:55Larry Wilson: Why?
- 6:57Larry Wilson: Because it's harder to misunderstand.
- 7:01Larry Wilson: If it says the powerful clean that your face deserves, very hard to misinterpret that.
- 7:10Larry Wilson: The powerful clean your face, easier.
- 7:14Larry Wilson: Now, also I hasten to point out, because of what I promised we were going to cover today, I don't think that someone's gonna see that and their head's gonna explode because they can't figure out what it means.
- 7:30Larry Wilson: Even I figured it out after like a minute.
- 7:33Larry Wilson: I kept looking at the powerful clean your face.
- 7:37Larry Wilson: The powerful clean your.
- 7:39Larry Wilson: I thought I was gonna say something like the cloudful, powerful clean your face engine or the powerful clean your face device.
- 7:46Larry Wilson: I couldn't get my brain running.
- 7:49Larry Wilson: The only problem with that, and it may not seem huge, but it comes back to that one thing principle I talked about before.
- 7:59Larry Wilson: Anything that interrupts the flow of communication diminishes the power of your message.
- 8:08Larry Wilson: It's not a huge thing, it's not earth shaking, it's not the end of the world, but we don't want anything to interrupt the flow of your message.
- 8:24Larry Wilson: If your message is, you know, uh one of our uh VIPs is uh Brian Ramirez, and uh Brian's a CPA, and I noticed he had a new logo on his emails, you know.
- 8:40Larry Wilson: It said Brian Ramirez and had the name of his company, which forgive me, I suddenly can't remember the name of his company, but underneath it it said live tax free.
- 8:53Larry Wilson: And I thought, wow, that's so good, it's so good.
- 9:01Larry Wilson: Live tax free.
- 9:04Larry Wilson: Who doesn't want to live tax free, right?
- 9:08Larry Wilson: I mean, I just thought, God, I thought that was so good.
- 9:12Larry Wilson: Now, how does Brian do that?
- 9:16Larry Wilson: I don't know.
- 9:18Larry Wilson: Because I don't know anything about accounting or taxes.
- 9:22Larry Wilson: I don't know any, you know.
- 9:24Larry Wilson: I yeah, I mentioned before Kirk Jaffe.
- 9:28Larry Wilson: After Kirk Jaffe had trained with me in the two-day uh boot camp, I think the third time, we were having a meal or something, someplace, and I was complaining about something having to do with my mortgage or something.
- 9:43Larry Wilson: And he just said, Oh, he said, uh, what is the interest rate you're paying?
- 9:49Larry Wilson: And I said, Oh, I think it's whatever it was.
- 9:51Larry Wilson: And he said, Oh, you know what?
- 9:52Larry Wilson: He said, I might be able to help you with that.
- 9:55Larry Wilson: Would you like me to see if I could get you a better rate than that?
- 10:00Larry Wilson: I said, sure.
- 10:01Larry Wilson: What do I know?
- 10:02Larry Wilson: All I can tell you is there was a lot of papers I had to sign, and I had to keep coming up with documents, and other people besides Kirk at some company kept losing everything.
- 10:14Larry Wilson: It took a, I don't know, a month or two.
- 10:17Larry Wilson: But when it was done, I had a lower monthly mortgage payment.
- 10:23Larry Wilson: I had a 30-year fixed mortgage, but I had a lower monthly mortgage payment and a new car that had been paid for.
- 10:38Larry Wilson: New to me, a new car, uh, that had been paid with money that came from this uh refinancing the mortgage, but the payment was lower, and I was I I couldn't believe it.
- 10:52Larry Wilson: And people said, What did he do?
- 10:56Larry Wilson: I have no idea.
- 10:59Larry Wilson: It's not my expertise, it's not my field of specialty.
- 11:05Larry Wilson: Kirk has an extensive background in mortgages and refinance, and he's a real entrepreneur.
- 11:15Larry Wilson: He's involved in a lot of different things, but I couldn't tell you.
- 11:20Larry Wilson: All I knew is at one point I looked on the papers and said my mortgage rate was two and a half percent.
- 11:28Larry Wilson: And when people asked me about it, I said, Yeah, I think it's two and a half percent, their eyes would bug out of their head.
- 11:35Larry Wilson: And they're the ones who are saying, How did your guy do this?
- 11:38Larry Wilson: I have no idea.
- 11:40Larry Wilson: I have no idea.
- 11:42Larry Wilson: I'm sure it's all legal.
- 11:44Larry Wilson: I had to jump through a million hoops and sign a bunch of different papers, and this is years ago.
- 11:50Larry Wilson: But, you know, the point is that things, my expertise is in communication.
- 11:58Larry Wilson: All these other things, I don't know how they work, but I do know that when our good friends at Alpha Fit make it hard, just a little hard, not you know, not insurmountable, but when they make it clumsy, it dilutes the power of their message.
- 12:19Larry Wilson: And since we're also talking here about business and about your business, uh this also uh I think is very germane when it comes to things like uh URLs for websites.
- 12:35Larry Wilson: I know all of you have had this experience.
- 12:38Larry Wilson: Somebody gives you their website name.
- 12:41Larry Wilson: Oh, it's easy.
- 12:43Larry Wilson: Best and fastest service in town, guaranteed with a smile.com.
- 12:48Larry Wilson: You're not gonna remember that.
- 12:50Larry Wilson: If it was something that was musical, I was trying to think of some popular song I couldn't think of, but if it was something that was musical, you might have a better chance of remembering it.
- 13:02Larry Wilson: But somebody sometimes names picks a name for their uh just recently I interviewed someone for my podcast, uh How to Talk to Humans.
- 13:17Larry Wilson: And I don't think this uh episode will air.
- 13:21Larry Wilson: I don't think we'll use it because the person had a lot of trouble communicating.
- 13:27Larry Wilson: And one of the problems was I have to be very careful how I say this, but the website was something like Hollywood.com.
- 13:37Larry Wilson: All right, that's not what it was, but something in that it was uh a word that you would recognize immediately.
- 13:44Larry Wilson: That's what I mean by that.
- 13:46Larry Wilson: Now, Hollywood.com, that's a very valuable website because that's a word everyone all over the world knows that word.
- 13:56Larry Wilson: And this was sort of like not quite as famous as that, but it was a word that you knew.
- 14:02Larry Wilson: But it was spelled wrong.
- 14:05Larry Wilson: Not just a little bit wrong, it was spelled so wrong I had to ask them how to pronounce it.
- 14:14Larry Wilson: It was as if, and this is not the real website, but it was as if the website was hollywood.com, but it was spelled P H U L L W U D.
- 14:29Larry Wilson: And I didn't know what that was.
- 14:30Larry Wilson: And they said, Oh, it's Hollywood.
- 14:33Larry Wilson: I said, Okay, all right, if you'd like to pronounce it as well, and I said, uh, trying to be as polite as I could, I said, Oh, um, it must have some significance to you.
- 14:44Larry Wilson: And they said, No, not really, but uh Hollywood.com was already taken, and so you know, we had to figure out some other kind of spelling.
- 14:54Larry Wilson: So, and I just thought, oh God, I wish you had spoken to me before you did that, because nobody's going to remember this crazy spelling.
- 15:05Larry Wilson: The crazy spelling did not even look like English by the time it was done.
- 15:12Larry Wilson: But everyone in that company has agreed.
- 15:16Larry Wilson: Oh, yeah, that's pronounced Hollywood.com.
- 15:18Larry Wilson: So we all know it.
- 15:20Larry Wilson: And they feel like if you want to do business with them, of course, once we explain it to you, you'll understand.
- 15:25Larry Wilson: This is just like trying to win a swimming race with a bowling ball chained to your ankle.
- 15:33Larry Wilson: Yeah, you can do it, but don't expect to win any races.
- 15:40Larry Wilson: I mean, it's difficult enough to be an entrepreneur, to start a business, all the various different things that are involved in that.
- 15:49Larry Wilson: I know what all of you go through.
- 15:53Larry Wilson: Make it easier for yourself.
- 15:56Larry Wilson: And I realize now, my website is Wilsonmethod.com.
- 16:05Larry Wilson: Well, it's because that's the name of the product that I have to offer.
- 16:10Larry Wilson: It is the Wilson Method.
- 16:12Larry Wilson: Amusingly enough, if you go to thewilsonmethod.com, you still get to me.
- 16:20Larry Wilson: I purchased that also.
- 16:22Larry Wilson: I purchased both of them in case someone got confused and thought, I don't I don't remember if it's the Wilson method or or just Wilson method, but both Wilson and Method are spelled just the way you would expect them to be spelled.
- 16:39Larry Wilson: Now it doesn't mean there isn't a better name that could be a website.
- 16:44Larry Wilson: There are certain people, my son, of course, is much younger than me.
- 16:49Larry Wilson: My son feels that websites are not nearly as important as it used to be.
- 16:53Larry Wilson: Now, and and I also understand the temptation.
- 16:56Larry Wilson: God, I heard a I think a radio ad for a company that sells firewood.
- 17:02Larry Wilson: And I thought this was odd as we're heading into summer, but I don't know.
- 17:07Larry Wilson: Maybe now is the time to stock up on firewood uh before so it can get really dry before next winter.
- 17:15Larry Wilson: I don't know.
- 17:16Larry Wilson: But they closed out their radio ad by saying, We bring the heat, and I thought, hmm, that might have been a good website name.
- 17:29Larry Wilson: Now, maybe it's so obvious that it's not available.
- 17:33Larry Wilson: Maybe we bring the heat.com taken a million years ago.
- 17:39Larry Wilson: Maybe it was taken by someone who sells hot sauce, or maybe it's uh by someone who teaches tango lessons.
- 17:46Larry Wilson: Uh, you know, there's a million things it could be, I don't know.
- 17:51Larry Wilson: But they had their name, and their name was not a common name, and so I could easily see you being confused by the spelling of it, but maybe it's fine.
- 18:05Larry Wilson: But I before I go too far afield, and as you know, I I could easily keep drilling down on all of these points that we're talking about here.
- 18:19Larry Wilson: I want you to think about if you use a website, what the website is, and the idea that you might purchase a new URL, it's not inconceivable.
- 18:32Larry Wilson: It might cost$12 for the year, and maybe you experiment with it.
- 18:40Larry Wilson: Maybe you find a name for your website that's so clear about what your message is.
- 18:51Larry Wilson: I thought that we bring the heat was pretty clear, but I thought, now this is not his website, but I thought uh uh Brian uh Ramirez's uh live tax-free.
- 19:05Larry Wilson: Oh god, that's clear and direct.
- 19:09Larry Wilson: It's so simple.
- 19:11Larry Wilson: I defy you to misunderstand that.
- 19:15Larry Wilson: I challenge you to come up with some explanation of what that could mean that's not correct, you know.
- 19:21Larry Wilson: And of course, it's also intriguing.
- 19:23Larry Wilson: It makes you want to talk to Brian to find out, tell me how, how do I do this?
- 19:29Larry Wilson: Well, we're off to the races.
- 19:32Larry Wilson: But before we run out of time here, and that's always my challenge, so I'm always up against the clock.
- 19:37Larry Wilson: I mentioned uh Adam and Kirk Jaffe and a number of other people who are uh board members of this nonprofit I have.
- 19:47Larry Wilson: The nonprofit is education renaissance of Nevada Initiative.
- 19:53Larry Wilson: And the only reason it's that wordy is because I was looking through all the words that the IRS seems to like when they're deciding whether or not they're going to approve your nonprofit status.
- 20:08Larry Wilson: And so I thought, let me give them what they want.
- 20:13Larry Wilson: Now the website is nevata shines.org.
- 20:22Larry Wilson: It's not the best.
- 20:24Larry Wilson: That org is for nonprofits, they insist on that.
- 20:29Larry Wilson: But at the time we were putting all this together, I thought this will have to do.
- 20:33Larry Wilson: We had a bunch of others that we tried, they were not available.
- 20:37Larry Wilson: But this nonprofit, because of Adam, expressly because of Adam, one of the first things he did is he said, you know, we should have a gala to honor someone who we admire and who's done the same kind of things that we do with the children's literacy.
- 20:59Larry Wilson: And I thought, great, uh, how do we do this?
- 21:02Larry Wilson: Well, I have no idea.
- 21:04Larry Wilson: But Kirk and some of the other people involved in the nonprofit had some ideas.
- 21:09Larry Wilson: And so we sort of launched into this, and we thought we've got to find somebody who will be our honoree for the very first one that we're having this gala to celebrate this person and the good things they do, that hopefully will be in alignment with what our nonprofit does, which is trying to promote literacy and interest in reading for children.
- 21:35Larry Wilson: And we're having a hard time.
- 21:37Larry Wilson: We thought of some people, but we thought no one really knows who they are, these people.
- 21:42Larry Wilson: And we went around and round.
- 21:44Larry Wilson: Then Kirk had a personal experience that I won't share here because it's not my business, but he had a personal experience with a nonprofit that was just glorious for him.
- 22:00Larry Wilson: He hadn't expected to reach out to them, but something else was going on with his life, his personal life.
- 22:07Larry Wilson: And someone said, Oh, you should talk to these people.
- 22:09Larry Wilson: He did, and they were fantastic.
- 22:12Larry Wilson: And he said, Do you know them?
- 22:15Larry Wilson: And this was the Marcella Foundation.
- 22:18Larry Wilson: I said, Never heard of them.
- 22:20Larry Wilson: Well, they're up in Lake Tahoe, so they're right here in our area.
- 22:24Larry Wilson: And he said, I think you should look into them because maybe the guy who started that Marcella Foundation, maybe he might be a good.
- 22:33Larry Wilson: So I said, Well, okay.
- 22:35Larry Wilson: So I looked on their website and it looked like a match made in heaven.
- 22:39Larry Wilson: They're very into promoting literacy, education, reading, supporting the libraries.
- 22:45Larry Wilson: They have a program where they have volunteers go into schools and read with uh students who are having trouble.
- 22:53Larry Wilson: Everything about it was perfect.
- 22:55Larry Wilson: I thought.
- 22:56Larry Wilson: And I said to Kirk, I said, Well, how do we get to these people?
- 23:00Larry Wilson: I I don't know.
- 23:02Larry Wilson: He said, I don't know.
- 23:03Larry Wilson: He said, Did you look at the board of directors?
- 23:05Larry Wilson: No, never occurred to me.
- 23:06Larry Wilson: He said, Well, check that out.
- 23:08Larry Wilson: So I look and there's a name pops out at me.
- 23:12Larry Wilson: I thought, I think I know who this woman is.
- 23:15Larry Wilson: I know this woman from 40 years ago.
- 23:19Larry Wilson: I think I knew her in Lake Tahoe when I was working in a show at Harris.
- 23:27Larry Wilson: I look in my phone.
- 23:29Larry Wilson: I don't know how my phone has this, but in my phone, it's this woman's name.
- 23:35Larry Wilson: So I hit call on this woman's name, and I guess my caller ID must have showed up.
- 23:43Larry Wilson: Because before I could say anything, she said, Is this the greatest magician in the world?
- 23:49Larry Wilson: And I said, Well, no, David Copperfield is very busy right now, but this is Larry Wilson.
- 23:58Larry Wilson: And she said, That's who I meant.
- 23:59Larry Wilson: Larry Wilson.
- 24:01Larry Wilson: It was as if no time had passed at all.
- 24:05Larry Wilson: And we jumped in and she was so excited.
- 24:08Larry Wilson: And I said, you know, we're doing this thing with this nonprofit.
- 24:11Larry Wilson: And she said, We have a nonprofit.
- 24:13Larry Wilson: I said, I know.
- 24:14Larry Wilson: That's why I called you because I saw and I see it must be your son who has founded this.
- 24:20Larry Wilson: Sean must have found it.
- 24:22Larry Wilson: She said, Yes, yeah.
- 24:23Larry Wilson: And the the bottom line of this whole story is that this also is from the time that I, working in show business, I began to see how the most successful people I met in show business used these techniques to connect with people.
- 24:47Larry Wilson: Doesn't matter what somebody else says, oh, this is the way you're supposed to do it, or all the pros do the it was by being human and authentically connecting with them, which of course is at the very foundation of Wilson Method, making this long laborious story much shorter.
- 25:12Larry Wilson: Met with them, they were very excited.
- 25:14Larry Wilson: We said we'd like to honor your son.
- 25:17Larry Wilson: He was very excited, and he will be the very first honoree for our very first gala.
- 25:23Larry Wilson: And of course, we never would have attempted it if Adam hadn't hadn't said, you know what we should do?
- 25:29Larry Wilson: And we're like, okay.
- 25:32Larry Wilson: But again, every layer of it from Adam, Adam didn't come at it in some weird circuitous way of, you know, we should find a way to connect with the community so that people uh like the things that I wouldn't have known what he's done.
- 25:52Larry Wilson: No, Adam said, we should have a gala.
- 25:56Larry Wilson: I said, okay.
- 25:58Larry Wilson: And I I made it very clear, I don't know how to do that.
- 26:01Larry Wilson: But Kirk and some of the other members of our board said, well, we have some experience, we've never thought, and then it all seemed to fall into place.
- 26:10Larry Wilson: And the final crowning moment of it could have amounted to nothing.
- 26:15Larry Wilson: I could have called this woman and she could have said, I don't remember you, I don't know who you are.
- 26:22Larry Wilson: She didn't remember me because I'm so cute, although, of course, I am very cute, but I don't think that's why she remembered me.
- 26:32Larry Wilson: She remembered me because and she started talking about uh memories of us uh working together at Harris and all.
- 26:40Larry Wilson: She remembered me because I had connected with her authentically.
- 26:45Larry Wilson: Not like I was trying to get something from her, nothing I wanted to get from her.
- 26:51Larry Wilson: It's just the way that the superstars I worked with, I saw them talk to people, react with people, connect with people, people who couldn't possibly help them in any way at all.
- 27:07Larry Wilson: I'm reminded of a saying that seems very apropos here, and is from uh Zen teachings.
- 27:15Larry Wilson: I'm I don't know exactly who said it, and I don't know where it's from, but I think it's very famous in Zen teachings, and it's a Zen monk who says, When I was a child, I saw the rivers were rivers and the mountains were mountains.
- 27:34Larry Wilson: But when I grew up, I saw the rivers were not rivers, and the mountains were not mountains.
- 27:44Larry Wilson: Now that I am old, I see that the rivers are rivers and the mountains are mountains.
- 27:52Larry Wilson: It's very Zen.
- 27:54Larry Wilson: But it feels very much like what a lot of Wilson method is.
- 28:01Larry Wilson: It's very simple, not complicated.
- 28:05Larry Wilson: Anyone can do it.
