- 0:21Speaker 3: Let's Stadium.
- 0:23Speaker 4: If you're critiquing them for that, then you're just being selfish. Yeah,
- 0:26Speaker 4: like you're just mad at you.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I like selfish, Like this is going to be a
- 0:29Speaker 2: problem all season.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Between may and Mayo. You have issues. Yeah, it's going
- 0:33Speaker 3: to be a problem anyway.
- 0:34Speaker 5: He has a little thing goes around you.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I just wonder, like, at some point and I'm talking
- 0:39Speaker 2: to you, draw this is do what you want to do.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Do what you want to do.
- 0:44Speaker 5: Don't you know how you're telling them what to do?
- 0:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it would be us suggestion to you that you
- 0:50Speaker 3: not speak. You know, we wont went on anything to happen.
- 0:53Speaker 5: You know, why are you doing to happen? Because we
- 0:56Speaker 5: can just make fun of Italian so every time we want.
- 0:59Speaker 5: Oh so now all Italians were mobbed up.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I didn't say that, you did. I stepped on another
- 1:04Speaker 3: hornet's nest.
- 1:05Speaker 5: Another do this has happened multiple times? Oh yeah, Freddy,
- 1:08Speaker 5: can you not step on hornets.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I tell you it's a jungle out there. Everything out
- 1:12Speaker 2: there wants to kill you. It doesn't really snow that much.
- 1:15Speaker 2: That means probably this year we're gonna get killed.
- 1:17Speaker 6: Is that with the fall of the Farmer's Almanaca is saying, I.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Don't go by that, or they have been ready right
- 1:21Speaker 2: since the forties.
- 1:22Speaker 7: This is Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota's official website.
- 1:26Speaker 2: For deals, buy a Toyota dot com.
- 1:30Speaker 3: All right, rocking the Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:32Speaker 2: It is Tuesday here at Jillette Stadium, and most importantly,
- 1:37Speaker 2: we're two days away from the opening of the NFL
- 1:40Speaker 2: regular season. We're only a few days away from the
- 1:44Speaker 2: Patriots traveling to Cincinnati to get ready to play the
- 1:47Speaker 2: Bengals for their season opener.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Life is exciting right now. We can can you feel
- 1:54Speaker 3: the excitement.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Again and you feel the electricity.
- 1:57Speaker 6: I feel the fall in the air. It's a little
- 1:58Speaker 6: Chris this morning in fall. It feels, you know, it
- 2:01Speaker 6: feels like it's the time is right to begin the
- 2:04Speaker 6: football campaign of twenty twenty four.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it's Deuce, it's me, it's Paul, it's Evan, Matt
- 2:10Speaker 2: and thea booth We're going to talk about the Patriots
- 2:12Speaker 2: for the next two hours. A lot to talk about,
- 2:15Speaker 2: obviously as they get ready for the Cincinnati Bengals, But
- 2:19Speaker 2: it seems like, you know, previewing who the Bengals are
- 2:23Speaker 2: are kind of secondary to like just talking about the
- 2:26Speaker 2: team itself, in the state of the Patriots.
- 2:31Speaker 3: And what it's going to look.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Like going into this game, because really no one has
- 2:36Speaker 2: any idea.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I mean, we kind of have an.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Idea about the defense and what we think it should
- 2:40Speaker 2: look like based on a lot of there's a lot
- 2:43Speaker 2: of carryover from last year. Even with coaches, there's there's carryover.
- 2:48Speaker 2: But when it comes to the offense, for me at least,
- 2:52Speaker 2: it's a whole new world. I have no clue what
- 2:55Speaker 2: it's going to look like.
- 2:56Speaker 6: I think they're going to try to run the ball.
- 2:57Speaker 6: I mean, it seems like that's what I kind of
- 3:00Speaker 6: to that's the one thing to start the starting point
- 3:03Speaker 6: with the offense. But I've said it before, it's like,
- 3:05Speaker 6: how productive are these wide receivers going to be? You know,
- 3:07Speaker 6: how effective is the passing game going to be? The
- 3:09Speaker 6: pass protection? You know, we see it seems like the
- 3:12Speaker 6: injuries to Low and so have carried over into this week,
- 3:16Speaker 6: so was not spotted, but he did talk at his
- 3:18Speaker 6: locker room. It's a whole new world. And then you
- 3:21Speaker 6: know Lowe was out there, but have you said he
- 3:22Speaker 6: was He was pretty limited, so.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Right, yeah, that's late developmentre we go, I don't know.
- 3:26Speaker 6: And then I mean, not to get into Bengals, but
- 3:28Speaker 6: like Jamar Chase is watching practice and a T shirt
- 3:31Speaker 6: as of yesterday, still so is you know, are they
- 3:33Speaker 6: going to figure that out? It seems like the Bengals
- 3:35Speaker 6: whole off season has been about everybody wants to get
- 3:37Speaker 6: paid now and they're you know, trying to figure out
- 3:39Speaker 6: how to how to make it all work.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Yeah, we were at practice yesterday and there's chooks the
- 3:43Speaker 4: corps for a left tackle. Then Nick Leverett and Michael
- 3:46Speaker 4: Jordan were switching off at left guard because there's no
- 3:50Speaker 4: city so right now Robinson still in when he still
- 3:53Speaker 4: has the right side. So there, that's what it's trending towards.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I guess is probably the starting five and maybe at
- 4:00Speaker 4: left car there's going to be a little bit of
- 4:02Speaker 4: a rotation between Leverett and Michael Jordan, but it's not
- 4:06Speaker 4: exactly reassuring.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Listen, I would trade.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I would trade for continuity, stability and communication on the
- 4:16Speaker 2: offensive line for Jamar Chase playing. Like if I could
- 4:20Speaker 2: trade that, Jamar Chase is going to play for sure,
- 4:23Speaker 2: but we knew who this offensive line was and it
- 4:26Speaker 2: was you know, stable, I trade that at this point.
- 4:30Speaker 5: That's a great pH Well, p U debate right there. Yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 5: you know, no answer, there's no right answer, no way
- 4:38Speaker 5: of you know.
- 4:40Speaker 6: Chase just hopping and play. I mean, I think it's
- 4:41Speaker 6: kind of I would.
- 4:42Speaker 5: Rather have the other thing. Would Chase not playing? It
- 4:44Speaker 5: looks like is probably going to happen because I think
- 4:47Speaker 5: it'd be hard pressed to keep up with him if
- 4:49Speaker 5: if Chase worth ready to go.
- 4:50Speaker 2: But I think they have other good receivers too, so
- 4:54Speaker 2: and they still let Joe Burrow.
- 4:55Speaker 6: And changed over. Yeah, I mean, so there's gonna be
- 4:57Speaker 6: some questions in the spot with andre Yoshiva's I believe
- 5:01Speaker 6: this is always say yeah from Princeton, big athletic guy,
- 5:03Speaker 6: which you know we'll get into matchups, but.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Here we got things have changed. So paulse you know
- 5:07Speaker 2: what Paul's doing. He's setting it up. If Chase doesn't play,
- 5:10Speaker 2: the Patriots should win.
- 5:11Speaker 5: If they don't I'm not setting it up for that.
- 5:14Speaker 5: You're not doing a fella, guy, No, No, I'm not
- 5:15Speaker 5: setting it up for that. I think they're going to
- 5:17Speaker 5: have a hard time. But I think if Chase was
- 5:19Speaker 5: one hundred percent and ready to go, I think the
- 5:21Speaker 5: Patriots offense would be hard pressed to keep up. Yeah,
- 5:25Speaker 5: that's what I'm trying to I.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Say two in the twenty twenty two game with the Browns,
- 5:28Speaker 6: would pre say that those Chase didn't play in that game,
- 5:30Speaker 6: and they didn't you know, they weren't very productive. So
- 5:32Speaker 6: he's that's no secret. He's He's a huge part of
- 5:34Speaker 6: what they do. And it seems like the Sicki's their
- 5:36Speaker 6: number one tight end now too, which is a little
- 5:38Speaker 6: bit strange.
- 5:38Speaker 4: I me and Drew Sample can make the case for
- 5:40Speaker 4: the Patriots for a second.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Make the case.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I'm gonna make the case. Make the case there are
- 5:44Speaker 4: I'm not I'm saying there's a chance. I'm not picking
- 5:47Speaker 4: the Patriots, but I'm saying there's a chance based off
- 5:50Speaker 4: of some of the trends that you look at between
- 5:52Speaker 4: these two teams. I think the biggest one being Jacoby
- 5:56Speaker 4: Brisset trounce this team in twenty twenty two, just two
- 5:59Speaker 4: years go thirty two to thirteen in that game in Cleveland,
- 6:03Speaker 4: played pretty well in that game. The Browns under Stefanski
- 6:07Speaker 4: and Alex van Pelt six and two in four seasons
- 6:10Speaker 4: against the Bengals, so they were kind of the thorn
- 6:13Speaker 4: in the Bengals side in that division. It's one of
- 6:15Speaker 4: those weird division matchups where the Browns owned the Bengals,
- 6:19Speaker 4: even though you probably would think it would be the
- 6:20Speaker 4: other way around. Last trend Joe Burrow in week ones.
- 6:25Speaker 4: They are notoriously slow starters in Cincinnati. Joe Burrow's one
- 6:29Speaker 4: in three in weak ones as the starter since he
- 6:32Speaker 4: got drafted by the Bengals. So I'm not saying they're
- 6:35Speaker 4: gonna win. I'm not necessarily picking the Patriots. But there's
- 6:38Speaker 4: always those matchups, especially division matchups, where somebody just knows
- 6:42Speaker 4: something about the other team, and maybe Alex van Pellt
- 6:47Speaker 4: has that Pittsburgh Steeler blueprint that we're used to around
- 6:51Speaker 4: here on lou Anna Marumo. See, I knew I was
- 6:54Speaker 4: going to butcher it just lou Ana Rumo. Maybe they
- 6:58Speaker 4: just have the.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Just to the Jet Division has always been creazy. I mean,
- 7:02Speaker 2: even when the Browns were down, they they would have
- 7:04Speaker 2: good games, if not winning games against the Steelers. Yeah,
- 7:08Speaker 2: you know, so that's always been a very competitive division
- 7:13Speaker 2: amongst them.
- 7:14Speaker 6: How competitive you know, it's a lot of the Patriot
- 7:16Speaker 6: games in their division that over the years that you know,
- 7:18Speaker 6: you know, Miami was always tough. I mean the Jets even.
- 7:21Speaker 6: I know there were some mixed in trouncings in there too,
- 7:24Speaker 6: but there were you know, overtime games against you know,
- 7:27Speaker 6: teams going to Super Bowls, Patriots teams and Jets teams
- 7:30Speaker 6: going nowhere. So I don't know, I mean, it's wishful thinking.
- 7:33Speaker 6: I just I wish I just feel like it's divisional and.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Well I think it's I mean, is not a fella girl.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I'm not trying to set it up, but it is
- 7:40Speaker 5: a good time to play a team that is better
- 7:42Speaker 5: than you on paper. Sure, you know at the start
- 7:44Speaker 5: of the season when there's a lot of newness and
- 7:47Speaker 5: things aren't really buttoned down. Now, I will say, I
- 7:50Speaker 5: think a lot of their week one issues and those
- 7:53Speaker 5: four years have been related to Burrow. Burrow hasn't made
- 7:56Speaker 5: it out of a training camp healthy and this is
- 7:58Speaker 5: the first time that he will in four years. It's
- 8:01Speaker 5: coming off of twenty acl then an appendectomy, and then
- 8:04Speaker 5: a cap strain. So he entered the season the last
- 8:08Speaker 5: three straight years at well below one hundred percent. This
- 8:11Speaker 5: year he's not, but he's probably gonna be missing his
- 8:14Speaker 5: number one receiver and there's still time, right know how,
- 8:19Speaker 5: you can just live with yourself.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I can hope he also he is coming off of
- 8:23Speaker 4: major injury that ended last season, but.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Not didn't miss any time in camped In the last
- 8:28Speaker 5: three years he's missed time in camp.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Yeah, it just even their month of September record is
- 8:33Speaker 4: not very good in the Borough era. They are just
- 8:35Speaker 4: one of those teams that gets hot at the right time.
- 8:37Speaker 4: You know, you want to get hot post Thanksgiving and
- 8:40Speaker 4: then carry it into the playoffs. And that's how Cincinnati
- 8:43Speaker 4: has been. If you're going to play Cincinnati, you want
- 8:45Speaker 4: to play him in September.
- 8:46Speaker 5: And it's not it doesn't you know, it doesn't strike
- 8:50Speaker 5: me as the explosive offense that they've had in the past.
- 8:55Speaker 5: So that's why I think it is a good time
- 8:57Speaker 5: to get him. I you know, if the game is
- 9:00Speaker 5: a little bit lower scoring, then that obviously favors the underdog. Sure,
- 9:05Speaker 5: you know it keeps you, It keeps you in the game.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Now.
- 9:07Speaker 5: I do think Cincinnati should be a little bit better
- 9:10Speaker 5: defensively than they were a last year. But you know,
- 9:13Speaker 5: these things don't just work on paper. They they brought
- 9:16Speaker 5: in a couple of safeties that they think are going
- 9:18Speaker 5: to help their secondary out, but doesn't mean it's going
- 9:21Speaker 5: to happen.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Yep.
- 9:22Speaker 5: You know with Gino Stone and Von Bell, they they
- 9:25Speaker 5: brought those two guys in and they felt like that
- 9:28Speaker 5: was a huge issue with them trying to replace Jesse
- 9:30Speaker 5: Bates from the year before.
- 9:32Speaker 6: Yeah, Trum Brown looks like he's going to be on
- 9:34Speaker 6: the right.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Brown's going to have to start for Amarus Mims, who's
- 9:37Speaker 5: not going to doesn't look like he's going to play anyway.
- 9:39Speaker 4: So yeah, surprise, surprise.
- 9:41Speaker 2: So back to the Patriots offense, still uncertainty on the
- 9:46Speaker 2: offensive line, even just based on the last thing that
- 9:50Speaker 2: we saw at practice, they're still mixing and matching out there.
- 9:55Speaker 3: We talked about this last week. Who's the Patriots number
- 9:57Speaker 3: one wide receiver?
- 10:00Speaker 5: I would say Tomario Douglas lining up where Wasn't that
- 10:03Speaker 5: our answer last week?
- 10:05Speaker 4: He's their best receiver. I don't think they have a
- 10:07Speaker 4: number one receiver. I think they're.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Hoping would be the answer.
- 10:10Speaker 4: By the way, Yeah, to spread the ball around. You know,
- 10:12Speaker 4: they have multiple guys contributing. I don't think they have.
- 10:15Speaker 6: Their number one. But he's not on number one.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I know that. I don't really understand why you don't.
- 10:21Speaker 8: See that.
- 10:23Speaker 3: He's not he's not yet and he's not an X
- 10:26Speaker 3: And for.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Things that really get under Mike us, that's the one. Yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 5: X Y Z one two football talk.
- 10:32Speaker 4: To be fair, the X thing does boy like people
- 10:36Speaker 4: some people think the only way you can be a
- 10:37Speaker 4: number one receiver as you play X.
- 10:39Speaker 5: That I haven't say so.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Grob Gronkowski was not a number one receiver for ten years.
- 10:44Speaker 4: He's the best tight end on the planet because he
- 10:46Speaker 4: didn't play X. Like I agree with you on that.
- 10:49Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 10:50Speaker 6: I mean, it's just but I think speaking solely from
- 10:53Speaker 6: like the Patriots number one like, what does that even
- 10:55Speaker 6: really mean that your best receiver is going to be
- 10:57Speaker 6: a slot receiver on third and medium? Ton is a
- 11:02Speaker 6: splot receiver who almost won m VP a couple of
- 11:05Speaker 6: years ago.
- 11:06Speaker 4: It's a super Bowl.
- 11:07Speaker 5: It's not necessarily like you can't have a number one
- 11:10Speaker 5: receiver who's a slot receiver.
- 11:12Speaker 4: But you just want one that's going to play more
- 11:13Speaker 4: than you need a number one.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Colt got to.
- 11:15Speaker 6: Play every down like Cooper Cup plays every down. I
- 11:17Speaker 6: don't know's gonna play every down.
- 11:19Speaker 5: No, I don't think so he's going to be.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I think the point that we just don't know.
- 11:25Speaker 2: We don't know who's going to emerge as their best receiver,
- 11:29Speaker 2: however you want to call that number one or you know.
- 11:32Speaker 3: What I mean, We just don't know.
- 11:34Speaker 4: They have nice they have the ability to maybe have
- 11:37Speaker 4: some good role players within the roles that they're going
- 11:40Speaker 4: to ask them to play. They don't have anybody that
- 11:42Speaker 4: can just do everything well right, Like they don't have
- 11:45Speaker 4: that number one Jamar Chase. Play them inside, play them outside,
- 11:48Speaker 4: all three levels of the defense. But when you look
- 11:51Speaker 4: at their their receiving room, they each have one thing
- 11:55Speaker 4: that they can kind of hang their hat on that
- 11:57Speaker 4: they're really and that's fine.
- 11:58Speaker 2: You know, like if if you truly do spread out
- 12:01Speaker 2: the offense so that the defense has to cover the
- 12:05Speaker 2: whole field, that's great. Now you need a quarterback who
- 12:09Speaker 2: can recognize what's going on out there and make those
- 12:13Speaker 2: decisions to be able to take advantage of that because
- 12:16Speaker 2: it's not going to look the same on every play,
- 12:19Speaker 2: and when you don't have that one guy that attracts
- 12:22Speaker 2: attention from a defense, they can spread out their defense
- 12:26Speaker 2: a little bit more evenly. And again it goes back
- 12:28Speaker 2: to the quarterback to be able to recognize what's going
- 12:32Speaker 2: on and distribute the ball that hasn't been Jacoby Brissett's
- 12:38Speaker 2: m O.
- 12:40Speaker 6: You know no, And I would I would say too,
- 12:42Speaker 6: just to piggyback on like what Evan said, Like they're
- 12:44Speaker 6: from Cincinnati's familiar with what Alex van Pelt probably wants
- 12:47Speaker 6: to do too, Like they probably have a pretty good
- 12:49Speaker 6: sense that it's gonna be a wide zone. They're gonna
- 12:51Speaker 6: be bootlegs, there's gonna be I mean they've said it
- 12:53Speaker 6: in the press, there's gonna be screens. And I mean
- 12:55Speaker 6: if I was a defensive coordinator listening to what the
- 12:57Speaker 6: Patriots have kind of said, like that's what I would be.
- 13:00Speaker 6: I mean, Paul's had a great point of you don't
- 13:02Speaker 6: really need to blitz them. I mean, the Bengals aren't
- 13:04Speaker 6: really a big blitzing team anyway. I mean, they want
- 13:06Speaker 6: to win with their front four and those two big
- 13:08Speaker 6: edge guys. So you know, I just I don't think
- 13:10Speaker 6: you overthink it too much. I think you just try
- 13:12Speaker 6: to make the Patriots beat you deep and watch the
- 13:15Speaker 6: wide zone and you know, I mean that's like remember
- 13:17Speaker 6: whenever the Patriots have played Denver, you know, it was
- 13:20Speaker 6: always the whole week talking about it's the wide zone, like,
- 13:23Speaker 6: you know, we need to know how to you know,
- 13:25Speaker 6: move what horizontally with the blockers and you know, maintain
- 13:29Speaker 6: our gap integrity. Those kind of talking points. I think
- 13:31Speaker 6: those will be you know, key for Cincinnati. So I
- 13:33Speaker 6: think it goes both ways. They're gonna know kind of
- 13:35Speaker 6: what to expend.
- 13:36Speaker 5: The Bengals. You know, again, we can only go by
- 13:39Speaker 5: last year because we don't have anything you know, currently,
- 13:42Speaker 5: but they were a horrific run defense last year. They
- 13:45Speaker 5: were you know, at the bottom of the league both
- 13:48Speaker 5: in yards allowed on the ground and yards average per carry.
- 13:51Speaker 5: So they brought in Sheldon Rankings. I don't know, it's
- 13:55Speaker 5: weird good enough, you know, to to just like sort
- 13:57Speaker 5: of is he the Devon Godshaw. He's like kind of
- 14:00Speaker 5: a he's more early down player that can stop the run.
- 14:03Speaker 5: I don't know, you know, but that that was an
- 14:05Speaker 5: issue for them. Last year, and that's a good defense.
- 14:08Speaker 5: You know, I haven't talks up in a ruma a lot,
- 14:10Speaker 5: and with good reason. He's a he's a really well
- 14:13Speaker 5: respected defensive defensive coordinator. And but you know, at the
- 14:18Speaker 5: same time, they had some glittering issues a year ago.
- 14:21Speaker 5: I don't know, I don't know if they if they've
- 14:23Speaker 5: fixed those.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Well, especially when you do the pregame show, are you
- 14:28Speaker 2: going to have Mike Petraglia and we're going to have
- 14:30Speaker 2: Jeff Hobson.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Oh, Jeff Hobson.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Didn't get tracks on?
- 14:33Speaker 5: We did not, Okay, Jeff, He's been around a while.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Jeff Hopson is uh uh. I like to call these
- 14:41Speaker 5: people the Paul of the Bengals. Yeah, okay, good ty
- 14:45Speaker 5: praise in a good way way.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Big lou is gonna be a head coach in the NFL. Yeah,
- 14:51Speaker 4: maybe next year. And when you look at the Drake
- 14:55Speaker 4: may have it all throwing him out there to a
- 14:57Speaker 4: defensive coordinator who you know a lot of people, Tab
- 15:00Speaker 4: is like a master of disguise, like he never shows
- 15:02Speaker 4: you the same picture twice, A type of coordinator. He's
- 15:06Speaker 4: he's trending in that direction towards head coach status in
- 15:10Speaker 4: the League. I would say maybe even as soon as
- 15:12Speaker 4: next cycle. So he's really really good. But they're very
- 15:15Speaker 4: like sound though they're not necessarily this. You watch them
- 15:18Speaker 4: on films and it's not super exotic, like I'm not
- 15:21Speaker 4: watching this like crazy Amiba defense or something like that.
- 15:24Speaker 4: But they're very very sound in what they do, and
- 15:27Speaker 4: he's very good at changing the picture pre and post
- 15:30Speaker 4: nap on the quarterback.
- 15:31Speaker 6: That'll be next week the Amba defense.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Yeah, next week they'll be we'll talk about that.
- 15:35Speaker 2: What are we looking at for the availability of Hunter Henry.
- 15:41Speaker 6: With the injury report, But he's he's been back at practice,
- 15:44Speaker 6: and I mean as far as the because you guys
- 15:46Speaker 6: have been watching a little bit longer, right like they've been,
- 15:48Speaker 6: they seem like you're out there a while yesterday.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Yeah, Jeremy Springer didn't want us to see, you know,
- 15:55Speaker 4: the punt unit or whatever because we're all gonna tweet out,
- 15:58Speaker 4: you know, who's in the protection or or something. But yeah,
- 16:01Speaker 4: we were out there through period five yesterday, which is
- 16:05Speaker 4: like right up to team drills, so you know, right
- 16:07Speaker 4: through individuals and all that.
- 16:09Speaker 6: Still kind of doing the same ramp up like they
- 16:10Speaker 6: did during training camp with all those.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Conditioning early on yesterday.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yeah, So just a reminder to everybody that we're back
- 16:19Speaker 2: to our in season schedule Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays at noon,
- 16:25Speaker 2: so you're gonna have three days going forward of Patriots
- 16:28Speaker 2: unfiltered every week and on Thursday we will be doing
- 16:33Speaker 2: our picks.
- 16:34Speaker 3: So not just for the.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Patriots, but we picked the whole league, both straight up
- 16:39Speaker 2: and against the spread.
- 16:40Speaker 5: And I can continue my dominance.
- 16:42Speaker 3: We're pretty damn good at it.
- 16:44Speaker 2: So your dominant, just saying, you know, overall, I think
- 16:47Speaker 2: we've got a pretty good record.
- 16:48Speaker 5: We do, Yeah, we do.
- 16:50Speaker 6: Alex. Alex did pretty goo last year, didn't she.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I think she fell off.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yeah, she had an off year.
- 16:57Speaker 6: She's gonna come storming in here to show.
- 17:00Speaker 3: You the final status Patriots yesterday.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Yeah some of them.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 6: I had a heart attack there for a second.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Mike looked at me like like he saw a ghost.
- 17:13Speaker 5: When when And I know that all the listeners now,
- 17:15Speaker 5: because our listeners are they're well informed. And when Gerrod
- 17:20Speaker 5: Mayo initially announced the captains, he left out Jacobe Brissett
- 17:24Speaker 5: and then immediately corrected it when he was was asked
- 17:26Speaker 5: about Brissette. But when it happens, Mike had already sort
- 17:30Speaker 5: of gotten something together about the captains. In his face
- 17:33Speaker 5: was white like, oh no, it's like Girod took the podium.
- 17:37Speaker 6: I saw they posted my thing and then you know,
- 17:39Speaker 6: and I was like, you know, very careful obviously, but he.
- 17:42Speaker 5: Didn't say that. I'm like, oh my god, like I'm
- 17:44Speaker 5: looking at Paul and public what. I had no idea
- 17:47Speaker 5: what you were talking about, because I didn't know who
- 17:48Speaker 5: the captains were, yeacause I'm not in your club.
- 17:51Speaker 4: No, no, I don't get fined. Only when it happened.
- 17:55Speaker 4: I thought about being a good company man and being
- 17:57Speaker 4: like you know or something like yeah, but I just
- 18:01Speaker 4: decided to I was one.
- 18:03Speaker 5: Of the funny thing is I didn't think anything of it,
- 18:05Speaker 5: Like I didn't know, and I didn't think anything.
- 18:07Speaker 3: I know.
- 18:09Speaker 5: I credit for instantly going right to it.
- 18:11Speaker 9: You know.
- 18:11Speaker 2: I was watching on my computer and I won two
- 18:15Speaker 2: three missing something. Oh yeah, but it is Jacoby Brissett,
- 18:22Speaker 2: David Andrews, David Andrews, John Bentley, Joe and.
- 18:27Speaker 5: Joe Cardona, Fred Kurrish, Oh no, you were the only
- 18:31Speaker 5: one that didn't make it.
- 18:33Speaker 3: No surprises there.
- 18:34Speaker 6: I don't think maybe I was a little surprising who
- 18:38Speaker 6: I thought was a little surprising.
- 18:39Speaker 5: I thought Cardona was a little surprised.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Well, some do they need to have a special teams captain?
- 18:43Speaker 4: Is that like a requirement?
- 18:45Speaker 5: If they do, I would have thought I would have
- 18:46Speaker 5: been Brendan's schooling. To be honest with you.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Well, Cardona is the longest tenured player on the team.
- 18:51Speaker 5: I think about he's a long snapper thing.
- 18:53Speaker 4: I know, but he's been on the team a long time.
- 18:57Speaker 5: And I was a little surprised that Hunter Henry wasn't
- 18:59Speaker 5: It was not because he was a captain last year, correct.
- 19:03Speaker 6: I think there's fewer this year though, is that.
- 19:05Speaker 4: I didn't confirm that, but I was thinking about it
- 19:08Speaker 4: because Cardona took Slater's spot, so that one was one
- 19:13Speaker 4: for one And I don't remember Peppers. Yeah, like I
- 19:18Speaker 4: don't remember how that. I want to say there might have.
- 19:21Speaker 6: Been sad last year Mac for Jacobe.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Right, everyone else kind of had it that was in
- 19:25Speaker 4: versus out had sort of an even Yeah, so I
- 19:29Speaker 4: guess Jabrill Peppers maybe in for Hunter Henry was how
- 19:36Speaker 4: I'll look it up.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I was fine right now and I said this during
- 19:41Speaker 2: training camp. Peppers might be our best defensive player.
- 19:46Speaker 5: I think there's a strong argument for that.
- 19:48Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 19:48Speaker 5: I sort of wrote something about that in the notebook
- 19:50Speaker 5: that I posted this morning. Yeah, I just feel like
- 19:54Speaker 5: he's trending to that. And this is not I don't
- 19:57Speaker 5: mean this to be disrespectful to Peppers, but you know,
- 20:00Speaker 5: Barbore is gone, Judaan's gone, right, I think Pepper's is
- 20:03Speaker 5: the logical.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think, you know, and I absolutely write
- 20:09Speaker 2: what you're saying. I think if Barba was here, you'd,
- 20:11Speaker 2: you know, may make an argument, right, But I think
- 20:14Speaker 2: Pepper's game has risen a little bit towards you know,
- 20:17Speaker 2: last year, and hopefully it continues to rise.
- 20:20Speaker 5: But I think it is where Evan and I will
- 20:22Speaker 5: take the next half hour off.
- 20:23Speaker 2: He came on last year, so I you know, I'm
- 20:26Speaker 2: I think the future is bright for him on this team.
- 20:29Speaker 6: I just want to see turnovers, So I want to
- 20:30Speaker 6: see takeaways from him, you know, I want to see
- 20:32Speaker 6: him really involved in those. We didn't see enough of
- 20:34Speaker 6: them last year, just as a whole on the defense.
- 20:36Speaker 6: And and we're talking a little bit. On our preview show,
- 20:39Speaker 6: Evan was mentioning in the late nineteens teams now they
- 20:43Speaker 6: kind of relied on the secondary a little bit more
- 20:45Speaker 6: than they had the elite pass rushers, and you know,
- 20:48Speaker 6: I just I think you really saw a big drop
- 20:49Speaker 6: off last year. Maybe one of the biggest reasons that
- 20:52Speaker 6: the win total took such a dramatic dip was just
- 20:55Speaker 6: those dried up too. Your turnovers spiked on the offensive
- 20:58Speaker 6: side of the ball. So I just think for a
- 21:00Speaker 6: team like this is really important this year, get get
- 21:02Speaker 6: those takeaways. You know, get christians all. It's not a
- 21:06Speaker 6: lot of ball hands on balls this summer. I want
- 21:09Speaker 6: to see more of that. I want to see him
- 21:10Speaker 6: be able to get some takeaways. Jonathan Jones. I just
- 21:13Speaker 6: that's that's such a key for this defense. It seems
- 21:15Speaker 6: like they're going to be aggressive, and if they're able
- 21:17Speaker 6: to get those takeaways in the secondary, I think it'd
- 21:19Speaker 6: just be a huge, huge boost and hopefully Pepperson lead
- 21:22Speaker 6: the way.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Yeah, not as many of Paul's pick threes.
- 21:26Speaker 5: Now there are a few, but they just didn't they
- 21:28Speaker 5: didn't have any turnovers.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Mike is right twenty twenty two. That was all it was, right,
- 21:32Speaker 4: and that's short fields and good field position, and that's
- 21:35Speaker 4: you know why you get to eight wins instead of
- 21:37Speaker 4: four in a lot of ways, but this safety tandem
- 21:40Speaker 4: for the Patriots is like the one thing that I feel.
- 21:42Speaker 5: Like that you can say strength of the team.
- 21:44Speaker 4: This is a really, really good duo that they have,
- 21:47Speaker 4: maybe the best duo in the league. If both those
- 21:49Speaker 4: guys play to their potential this season, and both players
- 21:53Speaker 4: can make splash plays on the ball, both players can
- 21:55Speaker 4: play at all three levels of the defense. It's an
- 21:58Speaker 4: exciting tandem with Duggar and Pep. And I just wonder
- 22:02Speaker 4: you don't have Judah, you don't have bar More. You know,
- 22:05Speaker 4: maybe the way to get after the quarterback is we
- 22:08Speaker 4: can get by with only five guys back here, like
- 22:10Speaker 4: we have Christian Gonzalez. We have these two safeties and
- 22:14Speaker 4: we like a whole lot. Jonathan Jones is like mister
- 22:16Speaker 4: steady on the back end too, And maybe they can
- 22:19Speaker 4: bring five, bring six guys sometimes to get after quarterbacks.
- 22:24Speaker 3: That WASKI it's risky.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Well, they did it in eighteen and nineteen when Gilmore
- 22:28Speaker 4: was winning Defensive Player of the Year and he was
- 22:30Speaker 4: like at his peak. And I'm not trying to say
- 22:32Speaker 4: that Christian Gonzalez needs to be that good and in
- 22:35Speaker 4: the running for Defensive Player of the Year. But if
- 22:38Speaker 4: he looks like he did the first month the last season,
- 22:40Speaker 4: and you can put him on an island against you know,
- 22:43Speaker 4: other team's top receivers and you can come after the quarterback.
- 22:45Speaker 6: I think my big question right now is like, who
- 22:47Speaker 6: is your best nickel and dime players? You know? And
- 22:49Speaker 6: I know they can be cornerback, can be safety, but
- 22:53Speaker 6: you know, it's it's after the top four with Jones, Gonzales, Dougar, Peppers,
- 22:58Speaker 6: who's the next best two guys and what you know?
- 23:00Speaker 6: And of course they can rotate and they can put
- 23:02Speaker 6: you know, it could be Marcus Jones, it could be
- 23:04Speaker 6: Jalen Hawkins. But who are the best Who's the best
- 23:07Speaker 6: fifth and sixth guy in the secondary?
- 23:08Speaker 4: I think it's those two, just depending on you want
- 23:11Speaker 4: to be three safety or you want to be like
- 23:13Speaker 4: traditional nickel yeah, or.
- 23:16Speaker 6: Is there anybody else who is even in that mix
- 23:18Speaker 6: right now?
- 23:19Speaker 5: You know?
- 23:19Speaker 4: I think just speaks to their depth.
- 23:20Speaker 5: I think Marco Wilson might be. But I agree with Evan.
- 23:24Speaker 5: I think the two guys are the ones you mentioned Mark,
- 23:26Speaker 5: you know, and if it's not them, it could be
- 23:28Speaker 5: some issues because you need some depth. And this is
- 23:31Speaker 5: back to the argument that you and I made heading
- 23:33Speaker 5: into training camp, Mike about corner. I think safety is
- 23:37Speaker 5: pretty deep. I feel pretty good about those three guys,
- 23:41Speaker 5: but corner, I don't feel as good about the top three.
- 23:44Speaker 5: And I don't think there is really a fourth as
- 23:47Speaker 5: Mao said that has established any consistency.
- 23:49Speaker 4: There's not really even that depth up front either, you know.
- 23:52Speaker 5: Like I mean see. And that's the other thing is
- 23:54Speaker 5: I think the front seven was the strength. Now I
- 23:57Speaker 5: would say that the back end is the strength because
- 24:00Speaker 5: and lose barmb more and Jude on. Yeah, that that
- 24:02Speaker 5: chips away.
- 24:03Speaker 2: It's so funny how the game has changed, because I
- 24:05Speaker 2: remember when I was young, you'd be talking about teams
- 24:09Speaker 2: linebackers first.
- 24:10Speaker 3: You know, who do they have at linebackers?
- 24:12Speaker 5: Now no one plays linebackers like the field.
- 24:15Speaker 4: It's so funny how it's just like in basketball, like
- 24:18Speaker 4: how there's no mid range game anymore. Yeah, linebackers are
- 24:22Speaker 4: the mid range jumper of the NFL. Like they just
- 24:25Speaker 4: it's all about the back end and the front end,
- 24:27Speaker 4: you know, the layups and threes, like that's all they're
- 24:29Speaker 4: worried about now. And I just look at the Patriots.
- 24:32Speaker 4: In to Mike's point, their dime like is probably a
- 24:36Speaker 4: three safety dime with Jalen Hawkins and going back to
- 24:39Speaker 4: that eighteen season, I just remember with those three guys
- 24:42Speaker 4: back there that they one would play the up top
- 24:45Speaker 4: and the post safety role and then one would be
- 24:47Speaker 4: on the tight end, one would be kind of roaming.
- 24:49Speaker 4: And that's what you sort of get with that three
- 24:51Speaker 4: safety package. Hawkins starn Harmon like he can literally just
- 24:54Speaker 4: play the deep middle and just not give up a bomb,
- 24:58Speaker 4: you know, over his head, and that's all that they
- 25:00Speaker 4: need from it. That's the big difference.
- 25:01Speaker 6: I mean, you just named it. I mean it's Deron
- 25:03Speaker 6: Harmon and Jason mccordy, who were two established proven NFL
- 25:07Speaker 6: players as kind of your nickel and dime guys, and
- 25:09Speaker 6: now they just they don't really they don't really.
- 25:11Speaker 5: Have that depth.
- 25:12Speaker 6: I was also going to say, like the Bengals are
- 25:14Speaker 6: kind of a good example with what they've done with
- 25:16Speaker 6: with Wilson and Pratt like those that's kind of you know,
- 25:18Speaker 6: those two guys just kind of play the whole time.
- 25:20Speaker 5: It's and that's like a lot of teams, you know,
- 25:22Speaker 5: they have two guys now you could say well, I
- 25:25Speaker 5: like Bentley and Tavia better than someone else, or you know,
- 25:27Speaker 5: Wilson and Pratt better than you know Bentley and teams
- 25:30Speaker 5: have good linebackers, but they don't have a lot of them.
- 25:33Speaker 5: To Fred's point, used to be able to like rattle
- 25:36Speaker 5: off like a three four defense like, oh, they have
- 25:38Speaker 5: those four linebackers or you know whatever.
- 25:41Speaker 6: Teddy Johnson Pfeiffers like that. It's like right down the list.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Yeah, now you know it's one of it's doesn't get
- 25:46Speaker 5: as much attention as like the full back going away
- 25:50Speaker 5: and things like that, like the way people play nowadays,
- 25:53Speaker 5: But linebackers are not generally the lifeblood of a defense.
- 25:57Speaker 2: You know, we're getting except for cornerback. Are we getting
- 26:01Speaker 2: to the point or trending toward positionless defensive players?
- 26:06Speaker 3: You know?
- 26:07Speaker 4: Well, I would say that the Patriots hybrids are kind
- 26:09Speaker 4: of positionless, like Dugger Pepper's Like those guys play linebacker
- 26:14Speaker 4: a lot of the time, Like they literally are playing
- 26:16Speaker 4: linebacker at the second level of the defense. But you know,
- 26:19Speaker 4: the Patriots, like on passing downs thirty eight, like they
- 26:22Speaker 4: run their five zero package, so they have five rushers
- 26:25Speaker 4: across the line of scrimmage and then six guys in
- 26:28Speaker 4: the back end, and there's just nobody in the second level,
- 26:31Speaker 4: Like they just you know, they don't really even cover
- 26:34Speaker 4: the second level in that type of way anymore. So
- 26:37Speaker 4: it's a totally different way to structure defense, and they
- 26:40Speaker 4: were to Belichick's credit, he was kind of at the
- 26:43Speaker 4: forefront of that, Like, let's get the two hundred and
- 26:45Speaker 4: fifty pound linebacker off the field on third down and
- 26:48Speaker 4: let's replace him with a two hundred and twenty pounds
- 26:50Speaker 4: safety who that if they do surprise us and run
- 26:52Speaker 4: a draw or something like that, he can still make
- 26:54Speaker 4: a play.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Be competitive. Yeah, yeah, I mean, you know, I lost
- 27:01Speaker 2: my train of thought anyway. Now, I was just I've
- 27:04Speaker 2: said it before that everything in the league now favors
- 27:08Speaker 2: the offense in terms.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Of the rules and all that.
- 27:10Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean the defenses aren't getting better. You
- 27:15Speaker 2: may not see the elite defenses that you saw in
- 27:17Speaker 2: the pass but for an average to just middling quarterback,
- 27:23Speaker 2: these defenses are tough.
- 27:25Speaker 5: I would play last year it was a little bit
- 27:26Speaker 5: of a resurgence. It was defense in general. Yeah, you know,
- 27:29Speaker 5: it's not anything else. Yeah, it's not a trend of
- 27:32Speaker 5: him overall, but I thought there was a little pushback
- 27:34Speaker 5: on defense last year, but I think.
- 27:38Speaker 2: We don't see it as late people. But these defenses
- 27:41Speaker 2: are sophisticated. They are hard to read for a quarterback,
- 27:45Speaker 2: and that's why there's not a lot of good quarterbacks
- 27:48Speaker 2: in the world that can play in the NFL. And
- 27:52Speaker 2: it's because these defenses are really tough to figure out.
- 27:56Speaker 4: They've the defenses are back, yeah, like I'm not sure
- 27:59Speaker 4: all the way back yet, but they're they're trending back.
- 28:02Speaker 4: And the two biggest things is they figured out RPOs
- 28:06Speaker 4: at the NFL level, Like the RPO, like yards per
- 28:09Speaker 4: play on RPOs is on a downward trend, like they're
- 28:13Speaker 4: they've the league is like all right, Like we get it.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Like you know, we're gonna play the pass with man coverage,
- 28:18Speaker 4: We're gonna stop the run with six guys in the box.
- 28:20Speaker 4: We're good, right, Like it's not as much of an
- 28:22Speaker 4: advantage like Philly last year. Their offense is like built
- 28:25Speaker 4: on RPOs and they were nowhere near as good as
- 28:27Speaker 4: they were the year before. Defenses are catching up. The
- 28:30Speaker 4: other thing just you know, schematic minutia a lot of
- 28:34Speaker 4: more simulated or creeper pressure where you only bring four guys,
- 28:39Speaker 4: but you don't know which four guys are coming in
- 28:41Speaker 4: the pass rush. So they'll put you know, five, six
- 28:44Speaker 4: guys up along the line of scrimmage maybe, and then
- 28:46Speaker 4: two will drop out and four will come. But it's
- 28:49Speaker 4: a different four every single time.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Steelers, I mean, have been doing that for years really.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Yeah, So that's just a way to kind of keep
- 28:56Speaker 4: the numbers in the secondary the same but still get
- 29:00Speaker 4: pressure in disguise pressure and blitz and things like that.
- 29:03Speaker 4: So those things have kind of even in the playing
- 29:05Speaker 4: field a little bit.
- 29:06Speaker 6: Again, that's a conversation next week we'll be having. Yeah.
- 29:08Speaker 4: Yeah, he's probably the best at it, Mike McDonald's, you know,
- 29:12Speaker 4: other frankly, other than Bill, Like Bill was really very
- 29:15Speaker 4: good at all this stuff too. And the Patriots run
- 29:18Speaker 4: all sorts of you know, sims, creepers, all that kind
- 29:20Speaker 4: of stuff, all.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Right, Eight five to five Pass five hundred is the
- 29:23Speaker 2: ACE ticket hotline, web radio at Patriots dot com is
- 29:27Speaker 2: the email address. Lots of emails coming in. But I
- 29:31Speaker 2: want to also talk about some of the other games.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Are you going to be watching Thursday night?
- 29:36Speaker 5: Absolutely? Yeah, that's a that's a good matchup Kansas City
- 29:40Speaker 5: were the two best teams in the AFC.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe in the league, Derek, I was just gonna.
- 29:46Speaker 5: Say, not that anybody cares, but they were one two
- 29:49Speaker 5: and my my preseason power rankings.
- 29:51Speaker 2: I mean, he could be the difference for Baltimore, take
- 29:55Speaker 2: a little bit of the burden off of Jackson in
- 29:58Speaker 2: the run game and just pound the all with him.
- 30:00Speaker 6: Well when they had I mean mark Ingraham went like
- 30:02Speaker 6: twenty nineteen when they beat the Ingram Sorry, yeah, get
- 30:06Speaker 6: Ingris something missed up, but that was when they were
- 30:08Speaker 6: kind of felt like at their best with that power,
- 30:10Speaker 6: you know, having that power compliment to Lamar's.
- 30:13Speaker 5: Speed and just ability. So yeah, it's it's.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Worrisome, I would say having that guy with that team.
- 30:19Speaker 4: We'll see, But.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not as sold on that. I think he's
- 30:23Speaker 5: a little bit close to done and I don't think
- 30:25Speaker 5: that style is necessarily conducive to him. But we'll see.
- 30:28Speaker 4: I agree, I wouldn't worry with him. Would be like
- 30:31Speaker 4: you're going to run Derrick Henry out of the gun,
- 30:33Speaker 4: because if he doesn't have a full head of steam
- 30:36Speaker 4: coming at the line of scrimmage, it's a different cat.
- 30:39Speaker 4: Like he's not he's not a spread back like he is.
- 30:42Speaker 4: A put the quarterback under center, hand it off, you know,
- 30:45Speaker 4: turn around, handed off, and let him go to work.
- 30:48Speaker 4: So there's other ways that maybe they do it to
- 30:50Speaker 4: kind of get around that. But I don't really love
- 30:53Speaker 4: Derrick Henry starting from a standstill and then having to
- 30:56Speaker 4: like make quick moves and things like that.
- 30:58Speaker 5: My thing, Fred, this will stun you. Yes, I think
- 31:01Speaker 5: if Baltimore is gonna get over the hump and take
- 31:03Speaker 5: the next step, they need to figure out a way
- 31:06Speaker 5: to be more productive in the passing game. And I
- 31:08Speaker 5: don't think that this on paper seems to be an
- 31:10Speaker 5: indication that they want to do that. I think they
- 31:13Speaker 5: want to just continue to pound the football, like Mike said,
- 31:16Speaker 5: maybe not have Lamar have to run as often because
- 31:19Speaker 5: they have a guy that maybe they can rely on,
- 31:22Speaker 5: which is great, But I think at some point you
- 31:25Speaker 5: fall behind in a big game and you don't really
- 31:27Speaker 5: have the tools to get back in it. You know.
- 31:30Speaker 5: It's it's obviously, especially with Taylor Swift drawing up plays
- 31:34Speaker 5: for the Chiefs, it's obviously, you know, a high power
- 31:37Speaker 5: to high class problem. But it's similar to like what
- 31:40Speaker 5: we used to say about the Mac Jones Patriots. They
- 31:42Speaker 5: can't fall behind now. They don't fall behind, you know,
- 31:45Speaker 5: as often as the mac Jones Patriots did. But you
- 31:49Speaker 5: saw what happened when they played Kansas City, and I
- 31:51Speaker 5: don't think the Chiefs would. I don't think the Chiefs
- 31:53Speaker 5: were great last year. And I know that's silly to
- 31:56Speaker 5: say of a Super Bowl champion, you know, a back
- 31:59Speaker 5: to back Super Bowl chain it being at that, but
- 32:01Speaker 5: I think they were there to be had and Baltimore
- 32:04Speaker 5: I think was better. They just didn't play better that
- 32:06Speaker 5: day and they fall behind. I think Lamar Jackson is terrific,
- 32:11Speaker 5: but he still hasn't refined himself enough in my view,
- 32:16Speaker 5: as that pure NFL passer to be able to come
- 32:19Speaker 5: from behind to do that in a big spot like that.
- 32:21Speaker 4: They've also had trouble with receivers like Zay Flowers is
- 32:24Speaker 4: probably the best one that they've gotten in there so far.
- 32:27Speaker 2: He's single handedly almost lost that game.
- 32:29Speaker 4: Almost also why they were in it.
- 32:32Speaker 3: He does both.
- 32:33Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, yeah, a rookie you play guy tea,
- 32:36Speaker 5: Yeah right.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Rashad Bateman like kind of been a bust of a
- 32:40Speaker 4: first round pick.
- 32:41Speaker 5: Sure.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Nelson Agalore is their other receire right now, Tess Walker.
- 32:44Speaker 4: They drafted, you know, from North Carolina on a Drake
- 32:46Speaker 4: Mays guys. But other than Mark Andrews, they really haven't
- 32:49Speaker 4: had a ton of wide receivers.
- 32:51Speaker 5: They had enough last year, and I just think that
- 32:53Speaker 5: they fell short because they don't have I don't think
- 32:57Speaker 5: they're sophisticated enough in what they want to do. I
- 33:00Speaker 5: think they still reliant and to me, the Henry move
- 33:04Speaker 5: signals that that's what they want to keep doing. Because
- 33:07Speaker 5: Henry is a high volume guy. If you want to
- 33:10Speaker 5: get the best production out of him, you've got to
- 33:12Speaker 5: give him the ball a lot. He's gonna wear that
- 33:14Speaker 5: wear you down, and eventually he's going to break one.
- 33:17Speaker 5: That's sort of Derek Henry's amo.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Yeah, they hope that Todd Monkin was going to make
- 33:23Speaker 4: this more of like a pro style passing game.
- 33:26Speaker 5: Remember they talked about hurry up and yeah, just using
- 33:29Speaker 5: tempo a lot, doing more happened.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Progression reads and like actual pro style football. Whereas you
- 33:37Speaker 4: know before with Lamar, with the guy who's bank, Greg Roman,
- 33:42Speaker 4: thank you, it was like a college offense.
- 33:44Speaker 5: You know, I got a boy from Evan that that.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Was a read option, you know, spread college style offense.
- 33:53Speaker 4: So Todd Mankin was supposed to come in and take
- 33:57Speaker 4: it to that next level with for Lamar, I mean
- 33:59Speaker 4: he wanted to be the league. Like we're talking about
- 34:02Speaker 4: it like that's.
- 34:03Speaker 3: It was really good.
- 34:04Speaker 5: Yeah, Like they're so good that they can play. I
- 34:08Speaker 5: just I would worry, like in a big and it
- 34:11Speaker 5: might only be once, like they could go, you know whatever,
- 34:14Speaker 5: thirteen and four easily that they're that good and it
- 34:18Speaker 5: might not really come up in the regular season. But
- 34:21Speaker 5: at some point, I feel like you need to find
- 34:22Speaker 5: a different way to win. It's not like, you know,
- 34:25Speaker 5: not all teams can be like the Celtics and just
- 34:27Speaker 5: roll every round and never have to like find a
- 34:31Speaker 5: different way. That's it's a hard thing to do.
- 34:33Speaker 2: In the NFL Friday Night Friday, the Packers and the
- 34:37Speaker 2: Eagles again in Brazil.
- 34:40Speaker 4: It's actually a great game too.
- 34:41Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a good matchup. I don't know if what what.
- 34:44Speaker 2: What station or streaming service is that on Friday Night?
- 34:48Speaker 6: Oh yeah, do we know?
- 34:50Speaker 3: Is that an NBC game or is that Amazon?
- 34:52Speaker 5: It's on the Peak, it's a streaming, it's a streaming.
- 34:55Speaker 5: It's on the Peacock, on the Peacock on the on
- 34:58Speaker 5: the you know, okay on the so I don't know
- 35:00Speaker 5: if I'll be watching good matchup in I got opening
- 35:04Speaker 5: night for for Fenwick that night.
- 35:06Speaker 6: Anyway, how'd you feel about some of the players saying
- 35:09Speaker 6: they're not going to leave their hotel rooms.
- 35:10Speaker 5: Darius Slay's interview was hilarious. They were told not to
- 35:15Speaker 5: leave their hotels. He didn't say I'm not leaving my hotel.
- 35:18Speaker 5: He said, we were told not to leave our hotel.
- 35:20Speaker 5: I'm out, Fred, we go to Brazil, not aull out.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Well see the same guy.
- 35:25Speaker 2: When it was first announced that, you know, there was
- 35:27Speaker 2: this thing about wearing certain colors down there.
- 35:31Speaker 6: Definitely like walking with your phone is a big no
- 35:33Speaker 6: no because they just run by and grab it.
- 35:35Speaker 5: But I don't know that's I vaguely remember something about
- 35:37Speaker 5: the colors.
- 35:38Speaker 2: I didn't know if it was Darius Slay that came
- 35:40Speaker 2: out and said, you know.
- 35:41Speaker 5: They said something about the Packers and the Eagles weren't
- 35:44Speaker 5: a lot like those were like cut, like the uniforms.
- 35:47Speaker 5: They were gonna have to wear different uniforms or something.
- 35:49Speaker 5: I don't know, but I think that turned out to
- 35:50Speaker 5: be yeah.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Right right, I'm looking forward to Jordan love, Yeah, because
- 35:57Speaker 4: you know you've made this point before. They had they
- 35:59Speaker 4: hand them in this giant contract really off of like
- 36:02Speaker 4: one season of production. And I think he's great.
- 36:06Speaker 5: It's the Packer way, though, f I think he's great,
- 36:09Speaker 5: don't get me wrong. Just let him sit for twelve
- 36:11Speaker 5: years and then you know he's great, Right.
- 36:13Speaker 4: I hold these quarterbacks, though, I kind of need to.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Just let him sit behind a future Hall of Fame, Right,
- 36:17Speaker 2: he'll be great.
- 36:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:19Speaker 6: I haven't really been following. I did see though it
- 36:21Speaker 6: seems like maybe Watson might have been banged up again
- 36:23Speaker 6: or they're talking about him. But I still go back
- 36:25Speaker 6: to that training cameraon a couple of years ago where
- 36:27Speaker 6: he was just such a good piece of that puzzle
- 36:30Speaker 6: and him getting banged up and being inconsistent and.
- 36:33Speaker 5: Mike did he play the X?
- 36:35Speaker 6: I think it was one, two, three X y Z.
- 36:38Speaker 4: They also have He's a number one X. They really
- 36:41Speaker 4: like Wicks in Green Bay, Dobbs your boy reading last
- 36:47Speaker 4: year Yeah, yeah, and they got the two young tight
- 36:51Speaker 4: ends too.
- 36:51Speaker 6: They got at the year two yep.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, eight five to five pats five hundred.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Let's get to our listeners. See what's on people's mind.
- 37:00Speaker 2: We'll start with Tim in Pensacola.
- 37:02Speaker 3: What's up? Tim?
- 37:04Speaker 11: Hey, Fred, how's it going?
- 37:06Speaker 3: Really quick?
- 37:06Speaker 11: Set good, really quick set up, and then I'll question
- 37:10Speaker 11: I will take off the air. So I'm actually excited
- 37:13Speaker 11: about Alex van Pelt. I know he probably wasn't even
- 37:17Speaker 11: the patriots first choice, but he has a history of
- 37:20Speaker 11: working with quarterbacks. I think he'll he knows what you
- 37:24Speaker 11: need to play quarterback and I'm sure he'll be able
- 37:27Speaker 11: to wing up may in there. My question is more
- 37:30Speaker 11: about long term, and I'd love to hear each of
- 37:32Speaker 11: your thoughts on it. So, Alex van Pelt, he believed
- 37:35Speaker 11: strongly in running the football. I think in times where
- 37:38Speaker 11: he was play callers in the past, his teams ran
- 37:40Speaker 11: the balls of most I think you were passes. And
- 37:44Speaker 11: the question is if Drake may keeps progressing and the
- 37:47Speaker 11: fact that this teams to tell bet on eventually getting
- 37:49Speaker 11: a number one receiver, which I'm sure will eventually land
- 37:52Speaker 11: on long term, do you think that if Drake may
- 37:56Speaker 11: develops into an elite quarterback and we have superstar weapon
- 38:01Speaker 11: out there on the outside and Van Pelt, do you
- 38:03Speaker 11: think he'll just want to keep pounding the rocks and
- 38:06Speaker 11: do you think that will cost tension and maybe for
- 38:08Speaker 11: them to look to a coordinator that's more, you know,
- 38:11Speaker 11: more leaning towards the passing game, or do you think
- 38:14Speaker 11: that Van Pelt, like he said.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Would just adapt to become the war I get it, ye, yep,
- 38:20Speaker 2: I got it.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Thanks for the call to listen.
- 38:25Speaker 2: If Drake May has the you know, indication that he's
- 38:31Speaker 2: trending toward becoming an elite quarterback, and whoever the oc
- 38:35Speaker 2: is doesn't adapt to the quarterback, then see you later.
- 38:40Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, you know what are we talking about.
- 38:45Speaker 4: Well, we were just talking about it with Lamar and
- 38:47Speaker 4: it feels similar to me with Alex van Pelt, that
- 38:50Speaker 4: there is a world where Drake May outgrows Alex van Pelt.
- 38:54Speaker 4: And like right now, I think Alex van Pelts is
- 38:57Speaker 4: a good guy for the job because of what the
- 38:58Speaker 4: caller said. He's experience with quarterbacks and he can fundamentally
- 39:03Speaker 4: build Drake May up to a good spot. At some point,
- 39:07Speaker 4: You're gonna want the khaki pant guy, right, You're gonna
- 39:10Speaker 4: want Ben Johnson, You're gonna want you know, the guy
- 39:13Speaker 4: in Houston. I'm banking on names today. You're gonna watch
- 39:16Speaker 4: those types of slower. Yeah, Bobby Slope, you're gonna wat
- 39:18Speaker 4: these these guys that are drawing it up in the
- 39:21Speaker 4: lab and all that kind of stuff. Once you get
- 39:24Speaker 4: to that version of Drake May right now, he kind
- 39:27Speaker 4: of needs the veteran offensive coordinator to bring him along
- 39:30Speaker 4: slowly and all that kind of stuff. Once we get
- 39:33Speaker 4: to the point where the callers at, well, I'm not
- 39:35Speaker 4: ruling out somebody, so let's yeah, let's play.
- 39:39Speaker 5: Let's play Tim's let's Tim's game though, So this year,
- 39:44Speaker 5: I mean next year, you know, let's just say that
- 39:48Speaker 5: May is the quarterback all of twenty five and by
- 39:50Speaker 5: the end of twenty five we got we got something here,
- 39:54Speaker 5: we got the guy. So heading into twenty six, well,
- 39:58Speaker 5: will Alex van Pell say we can't do it the
- 40:02Speaker 5: way we have the last two years, we have to
- 40:04Speaker 5: do it differently, or will he be intent on.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Well, part of also tim scenario is you land the
- 40:10Speaker 2: number one receiver, you land that elite guy.
- 40:13Speaker 5: But I see I'm even putting that secondary. Yeah, I'm
- 40:15Speaker 5: saying what we saw in the Philadelphia game was a
- 40:19Speaker 5: departure from the quote unquote base offense. It was much
- 40:24Speaker 5: more shotgun. It wasn't that many plays. I don't I
- 40:26Speaker 5: don't want to get too lost with it. But they
- 40:28Speaker 5: talked to us afterwards. If you were in the post game,
- 40:31Speaker 5: was when they were talking about North Carolina stuff, you
- 40:34Speaker 5: know a little bit different than what Alex Van Peltz
- 40:36Speaker 5: has been installing. Will he be willing to do that
- 40:41Speaker 5: or will he insist on doing what he did to
- 40:43Speaker 5: Jashn Watson and you know, sort of having him under
- 40:46Speaker 5: center and having him hand off to Nick Chubb. And
- 40:49Speaker 5: that's why he's not in Cleveland anymore. Right, So I
- 40:51Speaker 5: don't know, I don't know the answer. I'm just asking.
- 40:53Speaker 5: I'm asking Tim's question.
- 40:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not so much worried about him being too
- 40:57Speaker 4: stubborn to do it. I just don't know if he's
- 41:00Speaker 4: the play designer that's going to have the chops to
- 41:02Speaker 4: design the passing game in a modern way, in the
- 41:05Speaker 4: way that you know Kansas City's passing game is designed,
- 41:09Speaker 4: or something like that, where you're really going to get
- 41:11Speaker 4: the maximum out of Drake May if he is an
- 41:14Speaker 4: elite passer. But I'm I'm coming around on alexman pelf
- 41:19Speaker 4: for today. I just don't know if he's going to
- 41:21Speaker 4: be the guy in three years from now that's going
- 41:23Speaker 4: to be, which is fine.
- 41:24Speaker 3: If he doesn't, hopefully it's something we have to worry about.
- 41:27Speaker 5: Yeah, but if he does his job now and he
- 41:31Speaker 5: is let's let's just say that evans right, and he
- 41:33Speaker 5: doesn't really have the creative mind to adapt, that's okay,
- 41:37Speaker 5: as long as he does his job now. And I
- 41:41Speaker 5: am kind of coming around to he was a good
- 41:43Speaker 5: pick to nurture a young quarterback. I've reserved the right
- 41:48Speaker 5: to change my mind on that around the middle of October,
- 41:50Speaker 5: the end of October, if Jacoby Brissett still planned, that
- 41:54Speaker 5: would tell me that he is sort of wants to
- 41:57Speaker 5: stick with what he's coming.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I mean, this goes back to what we talked about.
- 42:01Speaker 2: We have no idea what this offense is.
- 42:03Speaker 5: Going to look. Yeah, I'm not necessarily concerned about the
- 42:05Speaker 5: offense as much as I am Drake May. And when
- 42:07Speaker 5: Drake May is ready to play, is they going to
- 42:10Speaker 5: be pushed back? No? No, no, no, no, he's not quite
- 42:12Speaker 5: ready yet.
- 42:12Speaker 6: It's just a hard position because if he develops Drake
- 42:15Speaker 6: May into an elite quarterback and then you're gonna say, well,
- 42:17Speaker 6: good job, but you're not going to get us over
- 42:19Speaker 6: the next level, so you're out a hard decision. I mean,
- 42:23Speaker 6: I wonder about they got a big staff. I wonder
- 42:24Speaker 6: if someone like TC McCartney, who young guy, you know,
- 42:28Speaker 6: like maybe like there might be more percolating.
- 42:35Speaker 4: That's the biggest question I have with this entire coaching
- 42:38Speaker 4: staff on offense, is their play designing ability. Sure they're
- 42:43Speaker 4: like that this they don't have a Sean McVay, a
- 42:46Speaker 4: Kyle Shanahan, a Bobby Slowick Ben Johnson, like that's not
- 42:49Speaker 4: who they hired, which is fine, But when you get
- 42:53Speaker 4: into the games, now you're gonna be going up against
- 42:55Speaker 4: Big Lou and McDonald and you know, Salah and all
- 42:59Speaker 4: these great defense of minds, Like are they going to
- 43:01Speaker 4: be able to outfox defensive coordinators schematically or are they
- 43:06Speaker 4: gonna this is what we do. We're gonna go under
- 43:08Speaker 4: center and we're gonna hand it off forty times and
- 43:10Speaker 4: like that's just not going to win very many games.
- 43:14Speaker 4: I don't think for the way that they're constructed.
- 43:17Speaker 6: I just I don't.
- 43:17Speaker 5: I don't.
- 43:18Speaker 6: I don't feel like I know for sure what Alex
- 43:21Speaker 6: van Pelt is. I mean, this is you know, when
- 43:24Speaker 6: has he really done this before?
- 43:25Speaker 5: You know, I mean, I mean, just that's why I'm
- 43:28Speaker 5: just going off of what it keeps telling me.
- 43:29Speaker 6: And so you look at the evolutions of the Patriots
- 43:32Speaker 6: offense over the years of you know, under Josh McDaniels,
- 43:35Speaker 6: of the you know, the twists and turns that they make.
- 43:37Speaker 6: I mean, I just I don't think you can stick
- 43:38Speaker 6: in this league as an offensive coordinator if you're not
- 43:40Speaker 6: willing to adapt to not only your personnel, but to
- 43:44Speaker 6: the trends of the league and what's being effective. And
- 43:46Speaker 6: you know, I think sometimes you overthink it a little
- 43:48Speaker 6: bit and you're trying to be too smart, get too cute,
- 43:51Speaker 6: try to you know, oh, everybody's getting really small, we're
- 43:53Speaker 6: gonna get really big. And you know, now we're slow
- 43:55Speaker 6: and we're not fast, so you know what kind of
- 43:57Speaker 6: backfires on you. But I just I don't know that
- 44:00Speaker 6: they don't have a tight pants guy on them, Like
- 44:02Speaker 6: I don't know that TC McCartney isn't you know. We
- 44:04Speaker 6: love this kid. This kid's a brilliant mind. And you know,
- 44:07Speaker 6: like so yeah, and I don't and I don't think that,
- 44:10Speaker 6: you know, I mean, every time Alex Van Pelt has
- 44:12Speaker 6: been running an offense, he's been kind of under somebody's thumb, right, Like,
- 44:15Speaker 6: so are we so sure that it was always Alex
- 44:17Speaker 6: van Pelt, who's the conservative one who's saying we have
- 44:19Speaker 6: to do it this way.
- 44:20Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 44:20Speaker 6: I'm not saying it is or it isn't. But I
- 44:22Speaker 6: just think this is the first time that he's had
- 44:24Speaker 6: a chance. And if he's developed Drake May a little bit,
- 44:27Speaker 6: we've seen some progress already, then it's a positive step forward,
- 44:30Speaker 6: you know, so we'll see. I just would hope that
- 44:33Speaker 6: everybody would be aware though, that you have to evolve.
- 44:35Speaker 6: You have to, you know, think of different ways. You
- 44:37Speaker 6: can't stay the same. I mean, the Patriots in two
- 44:39Speaker 6: thousand and four you mentioned Corey Dillon brought in Corey Dillon.
- 44:42Speaker 6: You got you got a burgeoning best quarterback of all
- 44:45Speaker 6: time on the roster, and your crown piece was to
- 44:47Speaker 6: bring in a running back to kind of support itself.
- 44:49Speaker 2: And I think by that time, where Drake May is
- 44:52Speaker 2: the guy, I think he should be part of that
- 44:54Speaker 2: process in developing the office.
- 44:57Speaker 6: What's his talents and how can you know how.
- 44:58Speaker 2: He should be in the room when you're drawing up
- 45:00Speaker 2: these plays, so you know he has a stake in it,
- 45:04Speaker 2: and it's coming out of his head as much as
- 45:06Speaker 2: it is the offensive coordinators.
- 45:08Speaker 6: I mean, I just think in a buffalo a little
- 45:09Speaker 6: bit with you know, he obviously came up under dable
- 45:13Speaker 6: and things were successful, and then they went to what's
- 45:15Speaker 6: this Ken Dorsey and it wasn't they got to get
- 45:17Speaker 6: rid of him, you know.
- 45:18Speaker 5: So it's it's it's hard. It's really hard.
- 45:21Speaker 6: Especially it's almost harder in success because if he stinks,
- 45:24Speaker 6: then you know, the offensive coordinator stinks and you fire him.
- 45:26Speaker 6: But if he's good but he's not quite good, or
- 45:29Speaker 6: the offense isn't quite you know, one of these elite
- 45:32Speaker 6: operations that's you know, taking any defense out to the woodshed,
- 45:35Speaker 6: then you know, it's just a harder decision to make. Like,
- 45:37Speaker 6: good job developing, developing a ma Alex, but we're gonna
- 45:40Speaker 6: you know, move on and you know, change boatsmid streams,
- 45:43Speaker 6: so to speak, to try to you know, get to
- 45:45Speaker 6: that elite level.
- 45:46Speaker 5: It's it's hard.
- 45:47Speaker 4: They have no there's no data in him as a
- 45:49Speaker 4: play caller either like that that I kind of know
- 45:53Speaker 4: conceptually what how they're going to scheme and how they're
- 45:56Speaker 4: going to run the offense based off of camp in
- 45:58Speaker 4: the preseason. But we have no idea how he's going
- 46:01Speaker 4: to play call plays. And the big thing to me,
- 46:04Speaker 4: you know, we were talking about running the ball forty
- 46:05Speaker 4: times and stuff like that, Like I don't want them
- 46:07Speaker 4: running the ball on first and second down as much
- 46:10Speaker 4: as I think they might, because like, if I'm with you,
- 46:12Speaker 4: I would much rather them throw to run right, like
- 46:16Speaker 4: throw to get the lead and then run the ball
- 46:18Speaker 4: late in the game.
- 46:19Speaker 2: High percentage passes. But you know you do that instead
- 46:22Speaker 2: of running on first Yeah.
- 46:23Speaker 5: And I think that this, and it happens all the time.
- 46:26Speaker 5: There's a misconception that when you rack up those rushing attempts, well,
- 46:32Speaker 5: that's you know, how they win. They ran it down
- 46:34Speaker 5: their throat, and that very rarely is how they won.
- 46:37Speaker 5: Usually it's we got a three score lead, and we
- 46:41Speaker 5: ran the ball twenty of the last twenty three plays
- 46:43Speaker 5: of the game, and we ended up with forty carries.
- 46:45Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying. That's generally how those big
- 46:49Speaker 5: attempt numbers get. You know, they come would you say
- 46:53Speaker 5: thirty two to thirteen?
- 46:54Speaker 6: Yeah, and that was and there, yeah, and they run there.
- 46:59Speaker 5: Must have played pretty well in that game and had
- 47:01Speaker 5: an abnormally productive game, you know, through the passing, and
- 47:06Speaker 5: then they just pounded away and salted the game away
- 47:09Speaker 5: in the second hand they got the lead. And I
- 47:11Speaker 5: don't know what the parameters of the game. This is
- 47:14Speaker 5: not exactly wait no, it's exactly one of my psychotic
- 47:16Speaker 5: Oh I remember that game, this is what happened things.
- 47:19Speaker 5: I don't have any recollection of the game at all.
- 47:21Speaker 5: Off exactly what that would be. My guess the lead
- 47:24Speaker 5: because you just it's so rare in this day and
- 47:27Speaker 5: age to just well, we're just gonna come out and
- 47:30Speaker 5: we're gonna have the Ghost of Stephen Jackson game and
- 47:32Speaker 5: just run the ball in the first fifteen plays of
- 47:34Speaker 5: the game and we're gonna win by three touchdowns. You
- 47:36Speaker 5: don't do that in the NFL. You don't do what
- 47:38Speaker 5: BC did to Florida State last night in the NFL area.
- 47:41Speaker 6: And there it is.
- 47:42Speaker 2: By the way, can we get a close up of
- 47:44Speaker 2: Deuce's socks?
- 47:46Speaker 5: Do you have like nine pair of that?
- 47:47Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 47:48Speaker 5: I got different Patriot socks.
- 47:50Speaker 6: I wear a little something, you know.
- 47:51Speaker 3: Is that just or it's just a week long thing.
- 47:53Speaker 6: You got to know it just days weren't there they
- 47:55Speaker 6: go yeah, slow zoom on those Reboks too, pretty good. Yeah,
- 47:58Speaker 6: I got two pairs down in the owners meetings, so
- 48:01Speaker 6: you know, fire them.
- 48:02Speaker 5: Up week Ons and Patriots they gave you they were free.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Yeah, they every team.
- 48:08Speaker 6: They did, they did, and they're like, what team do
- 48:10Speaker 6: you want?
- 48:10Speaker 5: Well, guy, I got to pick the Patriot. Yeah, obviously you.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Can't be here. Where are the Chiefs?
- 48:15Speaker 5: No?
- 48:17Speaker 3: Red Sox?
- 48:18Speaker 2: Jeff and Virginia writes in listen to every show this
- 48:21Speaker 2: offseason and loved it, really excited for the next four
- 48:24Speaker 2: to five years. The entire offseason, we've been told how
- 48:27Speaker 2: bad the Patriots old line is. I listened to a
- 48:30Speaker 2: ton of other podcasts slash local reporters, and it seems
- 48:34Speaker 2: that twenty to twenty five teams are in the same
- 48:36Speaker 2: or similar position regarding offensive line. This is probably a
- 48:40Speaker 2: question for Evan, but how many teams do you think
- 48:43Speaker 2: actually have great offensive lines? Let's define great as four
- 48:48Speaker 2: players who are above average. It really seems that seventy
- 48:51Speaker 2: percent of the league has a bad offensive line, especially
- 48:55Speaker 2: a tackle. But would rather hear from Evan to fact
- 48:58Speaker 2: check that center starts?
- 49:00Speaker 5: Can I just like so just the qualifier because I'm
- 49:06Speaker 5: actually curious to see what your answer to this is,
- 49:08Speaker 5: you need four guys that are above average. No, that's
- 49:12Speaker 5: what he said to have a great.
- 49:13Speaker 3: Offense, great offensive line.
- 49:15Speaker 5: Okay, So I don't think really there's going to be
- 49:16Speaker 5: too many that qualify. But I think there are teams
- 49:19Speaker 5: that have that I would say have great offensive lines,
- 49:21Speaker 5: But I don't know if they have four above average players. Yeah,
- 49:25Speaker 5: Kansas City has a great offensive line. I don't think
- 49:27Speaker 5: they have four guys.
- 49:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I just three. I just wouldn't look
- 49:30Speaker 4: at it that way because to me, it's one unit.
- 49:33Speaker 4: Like it's five guys playing together. So like, no matter
- 49:36Speaker 4: what your individual talent is on the offensive line, if
- 49:41Speaker 4: you aren't seeing it through the same set of eyes,
- 49:42Speaker 4: and you could, you could be terrible with Hall of
- 49:44Speaker 4: famers everywhere in that particular position. So, which teams have
- 49:49Speaker 4: like the elite Tier one offensive lines? Just like, off
- 49:52Speaker 4: the top of my head, Detroit number one in the
- 49:55Speaker 4: league to me, Philadelphia like right there with Detroit, Kansas
- 50:00Speaker 4: City right up there in that category. I would probably
- 50:05Speaker 4: cut it off around there was.
- 50:06Speaker 5: In my mind, I'm done, yeah, in terms of.
- 50:08Speaker 4: Tier one, like the elite offensive lines, and I think
- 50:11Speaker 4: Kansas City might be more like one be you know,
- 50:14Speaker 4: Philly and Detroit.
- 50:16Speaker 2: To me, does every one of those teams have a
- 50:18Speaker 2: notable offensive line coach?
- 50:22Speaker 4: Well, Statlin in Philly is like Dante Scarnekia level. He's fantastic. Detroit,
- 50:29Speaker 4: I don't know, it's not like a notable offensive line coach.
- 50:34Speaker 4: But Ben Johnson's obviously their coordinator and he's very good.
- 50:37Speaker 4: And they have Penny Sewell, who might be the best
- 50:39Speaker 4: offensive lineman in the entire NFL. So yeah, you have
- 50:42Speaker 4: you know, talent, and you have coaching with those two
- 50:45Speaker 4: teams just fantastic groups, Like across the board.
- 50:48Speaker 3: Really, I think that coaching.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Is, yes, is probably, if not the most important, really
- 50:58Speaker 2: critical in getting a cohesive offensive line because it really
- 51:03Speaker 2: is a ballet that they're doing there. There has to
- 51:05Speaker 2: be communication and coordination on that line, especially with them
- 51:11Speaker 2: again going back to how sophisticated these defenses. They give
- 51:15Speaker 2: a lot of different looks to the quarterback, but they're
- 51:18Speaker 2: also giving a lot of different looks to any individual
- 51:21Speaker 2: offensive lineman.
- 51:22Speaker 5: I'm concerned about it too.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Yeah, coaching is critical on the offensive line.
- 51:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it comes back to like the Van Pelt, Sorry
- 51:29Speaker 4: they cut you off. It goes back to the Van
- 51:30Speaker 4: Pelt thing for me, where it's I think Scott Peters
- 51:33Speaker 4: is a really good technique coach, Like we hear him
- 51:35Speaker 4: out there at practice and he's breaking down like your
- 51:38Speaker 4: hand was a centimeter off, like you were here and
- 51:41Speaker 4: we need you to be there, Like he understands that
- 51:44Speaker 4: kind of stuff. But the big picture, like the concept
- 51:47Speaker 4: is like the bigger question with that, like are you
- 51:50Speaker 4: all on the same page? Are you all all five
- 51:53Speaker 4: guys like flowing together and all that kind of stuff.
- 51:56Speaker 4: As good as as Dante was at the individual technique,
- 52:00Speaker 4: I might have been even better at the big picture.
- 52:02Speaker 2: I would say two years ago, maybe it was as
- 52:05Speaker 2: much a problem as last year. But I really noticed
- 52:07Speaker 2: it two years ago where you'd have guys just not
- 52:09Speaker 2: covering anybody. That's not because they don't they can't block.
- 52:13Speaker 2: It's because the communication is terrible and and they're left
- 52:18Speaker 2: on without anybody to block, because they're whoever is doing
- 52:22Speaker 2: it isn't making the right reads to start to play,
- 52:25Speaker 2: and they're not all on the same page. You know,
- 52:28Speaker 2: most of these guys in the NFL offensive lineman can block.
- 52:33Speaker 2: You know, they wouldn't be in the NFL if they
- 52:35Speaker 2: you know, just got manhandled on every play. But the
- 52:38Speaker 2: failings of most offensive lines is just that they they
- 52:42Speaker 2: just don't play well together and they're just not on
- 52:44Speaker 2: the same page. And yeah, every once in a while
- 52:47Speaker 2: you get beat no, no, obviously, but when it happens
- 52:51Speaker 2: week in and week out, you can look at, you know,
- 52:55Speaker 2: a lack of communication and coaching as a main culprit.
- 52:59Speaker 6: Like even when Dante was here, when I was, before
- 53:01Speaker 6: I even worked here, Like one of the things that
- 53:02Speaker 6: I just kind of came to believe was that the
- 53:05Speaker 6: offensive line is going to take some time, even when
- 53:07Speaker 6: you have a Hall of Fame offensive line coach and
- 53:10Speaker 6: you know, some really good players along that it's just
- 53:13Speaker 6: it always was going to take some time. I remember, God,
- 53:15Speaker 6: there was like a game in twenty twelve, twenty thirteen
- 53:17Speaker 6: around here where they liked they just couldn't block anybody.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Game.
- 53:23Speaker 5: It was fourteen. It was the on the Cincinnati game,
- 53:26Speaker 5: the game before it in Kansas City. You know, say
- 53:28Speaker 5: the name again.
- 53:29Speaker 4: Jordan dev H the two the most surprising week ones
- 53:32Speaker 4: that was.
- 53:33Speaker 5: That was one of the worst performances by an offensive
- 53:35Speaker 5: line in the Brady era that I can remember, right
- 53:38Speaker 5: and that's was you know, like, is Brady too old
- 53:40Speaker 5: to avoid this pressure anymore? This is the kind of
- 53:43Speaker 5: protection he's going to have, and as just normally the case,
- 53:47Speaker 5: Brady figured it out. Yeah that was that was That
- 53:50Speaker 5: was good? Right?
- 53:52Speaker 4: That wasn't Dante Scarnekia that year?
- 53:54Speaker 12: Right?
- 53:54Speaker 5: It was not.
- 53:56Speaker 6: But I think there was one that the one I
- 53:57Speaker 6: might have been Ryan Stork ended up being parted to.
- 54:00Speaker 6: Uh they lose to the Cardinals, I think in like
- 54:02Speaker 6: twenty twelve, like first couple of weeks of the season. Yeah,
- 54:05Speaker 6: same kind of.
- 54:08Speaker 5: The game.
- 54:08Speaker 6: Uh, you know, it's it just speaks to the nature
- 54:11Speaker 6: of the line though, where Dante who's special and this
- 54:13Speaker 6: is not this is the exception of the rule. But
- 54:16Speaker 6: you know, you are able to put together a functional
- 54:19Speaker 6: offensive line with really good coaching, even if these guys
- 54:21Speaker 6: aren't super talented. I mean, and like Joe Toney and
- 54:25Speaker 6: Jack Mason are arguably still two of the best guards
- 54:28Speaker 6: in the NFL right now. And you know, there was
- 54:30Speaker 6: a third round pick and what was Mason's four fourth
- 54:33Speaker 6: round pick, So you don't.
- 54:34Speaker 4: Get to the combine.
- 54:35Speaker 5: That's where you get your guards. And they did a
- 54:39Speaker 5: great job of identifying the talent out of the draft
- 54:42Speaker 5: and then they developed them because they were really good player.
- 54:44Speaker 5: It's not like they blossomed elsewhere. They were really good
- 54:47Speaker 5: players here and they recognized that and paid them both
- 54:51Speaker 5: and then decide to let them go.
- 54:53Speaker 4: Tony might be a Hall of Famer, like a like
- 54:55Speaker 4: a Pro football Hall of Famer, Like he's got rings,
- 54:59Speaker 4: he's going to be Like all right.
- 55:02Speaker 2: I was talking with a person at the Patriots about,
- 55:06Speaker 2: you know, the failings of the offensive line over the
- 55:08Speaker 2: last few years, and I said it began with Joe
- 55:12Speaker 2: Toney and this person agreed.
- 55:14Speaker 3: They said they should have paid him.
- 55:16Speaker 5: How are you not sick about it?
- 55:18Speaker 6: Like you drafted a potential Hall of Fame guard and
- 55:20Speaker 6: what you Why why.
- 55:22Speaker 5: Is he not fourth on it? Because I do think,
- 55:25Speaker 5: I mean, I don't care. I would spread the money
- 55:29Speaker 5: like that's fine with me, but they do, you know,
- 55:32Speaker 5: like the percentage of the cap can't go to one guy.
- 55:35Speaker 5: So like I understood what they were doing for me.
- 55:38Speaker 5: I just look at like San Francisco right now and
- 55:41Speaker 5: suddenly figuring out how to get these mammoth contracts for
- 55:44Speaker 5: Ayuk and Trent Williams done On the eve of the season. Oh,
- 55:48Speaker 5: it's really remarkable, you know, Deshaun Watson. They convert money
- 55:52Speaker 5: to a signing bonus and create thirty five million of
- 55:54Speaker 5: cap space in Cleveland. Like to me, it's there are
- 55:58Speaker 5: things that you might not want to do because sometimes
- 56:01Speaker 5: it's hard to cough up the money at the time.
- 56:03Speaker 5: But the cap isn't the reason why no. And I
- 56:06Speaker 5: agree with you, Fred if you just said instead of
- 56:10Speaker 5: instead of franchising Tony and just gave him the contract,
- 56:14Speaker 5: much like they did with Shaq Mason. They gave Shaq
- 56:18Speaker 5: Mason a big time extension and then not only they
- 56:23Speaker 5: let Tony walk after he was franchised, then they deal
- 56:26Speaker 5: Mason in the middle of that that extension, which I
- 56:29Speaker 5: didn't really understand. Like you had two guys, like I
- 56:32Speaker 5: just said that you drafted developed and they hit right
- 56:36Speaker 5: on the prime of their careers. You said, well, we
- 56:39Speaker 5: don't need either one of these guys.
- 56:40Speaker 4: Let's also not forget about Ted Carris too, who was
- 56:42Speaker 4: also right in that mix.
- 56:43Speaker 3: Solar was even more.
- 56:45Speaker 5: Player, even more inexcusable because that was peanuts and the
- 56:48Speaker 5: other two at least were high priced commodities.
- 56:51Speaker 4: So they offered Ted Carris a contract and then offered
- 56:56Speaker 4: him a lower contract after the team offered him more money,
- 57:00Speaker 4: offered him more money to walk and it just not
- 57:04Speaker 4: how you do negotiations. Yeah, none of it.
- 57:06Speaker 5: When does that ever work?
- 57:07Speaker 4: He's not Joe Toney Like, he's not on that level,
- 57:09Speaker 4: but he's one of those into your offensive linemen either
- 57:12Speaker 4: at center or guard where you put him in the
- 57:14Speaker 4: starting lineup and you don't worry about that position.
- 57:16Speaker 2: I mean, they had a guy like Logan Mankins was
- 57:19Speaker 2: great Patriots Hall of Famer, very similar guards his position,
- 57:23Speaker 2: but he can play tackle if he has to.
- 57:26Speaker 3: You know that. He was so versatile Toney.
- 57:30Speaker 5: I just I think that was the beginning of the
- 57:31Speaker 5: end for the offensive.
- 57:32Speaker 6: You could write a whole essay about the decline of
- 57:35Speaker 6: the Patriots dynasty just through the lens of guards, like
- 57:38Speaker 6: like between letting Tuney and Mason go and paying them
- 57:41Speaker 6: the Joe Ton drafting cold strange. I mean, it sounds stupid,
- 57:45Speaker 6: but like it's really breaking.
- 57:48Speaker 3: They've been chasing theiric.
- 57:49Speaker 4: And and then the coaching turnover to like Carbaruselo had
- 57:52Speaker 4: them playing okay in twenty one and he leaves with
- 57:55Speaker 4: Josh to Vegas, and then that opens up a hole there.
- 57:57Speaker 2: And then if you're gonna lose Dante's and Tom Brady,
- 58:01Speaker 2: your talent better be better.
- 58:04Speaker 6: Yeah, along the.
- 58:05Speaker 4: Line, like I thought, carn Basillo is a good offensive
- 58:07Speaker 4: line coach for them, and then he left to Vegas
- 58:10Speaker 4: with Josh and they replaced him with Matt Patricia and
- 58:13Speaker 4: then they drafted guard in the first round and hand
- 58:15Speaker 4: him to Matt Patricia to.
- 58:16Speaker 3: Develop that Patricia.
- 58:18Speaker 2: You know, I don't want to defend Matt, but I'm
- 58:20Speaker 2: going to You didn't have the time.
- 58:22Speaker 3: You had too much on his plate.
- 58:24Speaker 4: He also didn't know what he was He basically.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Handed over the coaching of the offensive line over to
- 58:28Speaker 2: David Andrews. You know, like it wasn't fair to anybody.
- 58:33Speaker 4: Yeah, that was a mess.
- 58:34Speaker 5: No, they didn't have a they didn't have enough coaches.
- 58:38Speaker 5: They lost a lot of valuable coaches earlier than they
- 58:41Speaker 5: had lost them in previous years. You know, like they
- 58:44Speaker 5: were only around for a couple of years and coming
- 58:46Speaker 5: into their own and then they were those guys were
- 58:49Speaker 5: leaving and they were really caught bear on their coaching staff.
- 58:52Speaker 6: Just to bring it and bring it back home. It's
- 58:54Speaker 6: I mean, we've seen a lot of issues with the
- 58:56Speaker 6: offensive line. It's just my hope is that And I'm
- 58:58Speaker 6: not going to judge him off a Sunday or next Sunday,
- 59:00Speaker 6: but like we need to start to see things settle
- 59:03Speaker 6: down a little bit at least with some of these pieces,
- 59:05Speaker 6: you know.
- 59:05Speaker 5: And that's the concern now is if does you know
- 59:08Speaker 5: so it is not so and low probably not going
- 59:10Speaker 5: to play as we.
- 59:11Speaker 4: Say, yeah, we'll see tomorrow, you know.
- 59:12Speaker 5: I know that Gerard told us, you know which, we
- 59:15Speaker 5: have to look forward to Fridays.
- 59:16Speaker 1: Now.
- 59:17Speaker 5: I guess we're going to find out who's playing and
- 59:18Speaker 5: who's not.
- 59:19Speaker 4: I'm not sure I feel about that.
- 59:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't have any issue with it, you know,
- 59:23Speaker 5: within reason, but I think those two guys are probably
- 59:27Speaker 5: going to be hard pressed to play. So now, just
- 59:29Speaker 5: to like come full circle, we're talking about how great
- 59:32Speaker 5: it was when you had Joe Tuney and Jack Mason.
- 59:34Speaker 5: So Evan's telling you, what was that practice yesterday? And
- 59:37Speaker 5: it was like a rotation between Nick Leverett and Michael Jordan,
- 59:40Speaker 5: one of those guys on the practice squad, right, Michael
- 59:43Speaker 5: George Jordan's on the practice squad. So that's like, and
- 59:46Speaker 5: I'm not saying like Listen, he's a five year guy.
- 59:48Speaker 5: It's not like he's some kid undrafted. It was just
- 59:51Speaker 5: making this way in the league. But this is where
- 59:53Speaker 5: you are on opening day. I know you're you're probably
- 59:56Speaker 5: going to have a practice squad elevation play yeah, in
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: the game.
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: Yeah, and you have jukes that left tackle, which is
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: I can't even get lined up right in a preseason game.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: So that a whole difference.
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: And now I do with you a point, Fred that
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: you made at the beginning of this offensive line stuff
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: that generally the worst offensive lines, it's not about like
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: I'm lining up against you and I just can't get
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: in your way enough. I have no quarterback even times
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: it's the communication problems. It's not reading it the right way,
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: you know, like Evan says, you see it through the
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: same set of eyes. David Andrews has a lot in
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: his plate. I do think it'll be better when he's
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: in there than it was when Nick Leverett was in there,
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: because I think Andrews has much more experience, you know,
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: doing doing these sorts of things. But I do worry
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: about the breakdowns, like the mental breakdowns that we've seen
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: throughout the summer, and I'm sorry. Part of that is coaching.
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: I just thought of another part of my through the
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: guard lines. It's the Michael and Wynu and then you
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: finally get a guard, but because you're so strapped in
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: everywhere else that you have to move him out to tackle.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: Like you know, I don't know, it's all pro.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: That's all I figured. By now they have it figured out.
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: But that preseason finale, just to go back to the
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: lining up, and that was one of the worst coached
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: offensive line performances I think I've ever seen. Like guys
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: weren't even lining up correctly.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: It's almost like.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: They were being stubborn, right, I don't care what you're
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: gonna go.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: I'm okay.
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: And they both I thought a quarter I think went
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: on we got called for one, yeah, but I thought
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: they both sounded defiance when they talked about it.
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: Yeah, And they I mean they get they have like
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: three guys run into each other and the starting quarterback
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: gets hurt on the you know, the first series, and
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: he's already hurt. It's just all of that could have
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: been a void.
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: And you can make an argument for coaching on that
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: play too. You know. I think Evan talked about this
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: last week, just like the design of the play. What
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: you're asking guys to do.
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: Right Russell and Arkansas. Would you say that running back
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: is still an area of need?
- 1:01:54Speaker 13: Is?
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: So what route? Would you go?
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Sign a free agent or seek out a trade I've
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: read some of those clickbait reports that Damian Pierce could
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: be on the rate on the trade block any interest there.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Seems like mixing has locked up the starting role, and
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: the Texans staff basically said that Pierce is going to
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: be a special teams guy.
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: I'm okay running back Remondro Stephens hurt and there.
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: Will be interview elevate Kevin Harris off the practice squad.
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: That's Damian Pierce.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: Terrell Jennings, Yeah, I think had a decent summer.
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: Jennings, Yeah, I'm okay with that. I don't mind if
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: they like have that. There's somebody on the street right
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: now that they think fits what they want to do
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: and they want to sign. That's fine. I don't have
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: any interest in dealing even anything for uh, you know,
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: a retread back. You know, Damian Pierce to me is
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: not any different than what you have. I don't know
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: how you guys feel. Yeah, Usually someone says I got
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: to go, I gotta takelf just gets up, makes an
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: awkward face at me in the middle of a sentence,
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: and just walks off the sets. You got to go,
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: And I have not even I haven't even remembered the
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: last time I bought do with Fred. So you guys
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: can't blame this one on.
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: It's the chairs.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: You need to drive the plane, all right, We're entering
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: our two here.
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: You can't argue anymore.
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: It's it's just not because we're also relaxed in these chairs.
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: I know you can't.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: You need a table to burn extra sitting in this chair. Abially,
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: it throws me off mentally.
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: I think we worked at the Paul. We're going to
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: get some tables here, maybe for Thursday shows.
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: So you know we're efforting that. Mike, I appreciate you
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: working on my behalf.
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: We just we just jump right into uh since he
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: though it felt like because this we you know, it's
- 1:03:33Speaker 6: it's it's usually we save like there's no talk about.
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: But we don't have any talk about the previous game
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: like we usually Tuesday's usually therapy Tuesday, you know, or that's.
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: What it was all last year. Right out of the gate,
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: everybody was like, oh, they did they played well against
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: the Eagles, and I was like, no, they really kind
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: of didn't.
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: Yeah, it was I remember, you got everybody mad at you.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I got everybody mad at me.
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: It's it's it's just fun standing on precipice because I
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: know Jacoby said something like like last week, we're like, yeah,
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: we're just excited to go on this journey. And you know,
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: you realize that, like it is a journey. It's it's
- 1:04:08Speaker 6: a trip. And it's like you have no idea all
- 1:04:11Speaker 6: the twists and turns, the injuries, the close losses, the
- 1:04:13Speaker 6: close win any of that stuff. Uh, until you go
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: and experience it.
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: Oh, I'm gonna make a quick trip to the phone lines.
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: We'll get Sam in North Carolina. Sam, you're next, Sam,
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: sim they didn't lose a call.
- 1:04:30Speaker 10: I'm excited for the season coming up. I'll be a
- 1:04:32Speaker 10: lot more excited. Direct Flavors playing me too.
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 1:04:38Speaker 10: Yeah, but you can't have it all. You know, I
- 1:04:40Speaker 10: understand the process, even though I don't agree with it
- 1:04:43Speaker 10: because I don't understand the function of the line. How
- 1:04:47Speaker 10: we just drafted a right tackle, but you still won't
- 1:04:49Speaker 10: kick win. You out to tackle. And I don't know
- 1:04:53Speaker 10: about the coaching staff, you know, but like our guys
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: just did, it's a journey. But I have a game.
- 1:04:58Speaker 10: I want y'all to know. You take a blue chip player,
- 1:05:02Speaker 10: and you take a yellow chip player, and you mix
- 1:05:05Speaker 10: them together, you get a green chip player.
- 1:05:08Speaker 6: Have a good Okay, I think that was a good
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: I think that was a shot at somebody.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: Yeah, who was talking about those yellow chips?
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: I think we had a caller that had this game
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: that he wanted and I got total confused in the
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: middle of it.
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: I think it was elder, right.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: I don't know what a yellow chip is. That doesn't
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: I don't know. There's blue chip and red chips. That's it.
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: There were a lot of color codes for the various level.
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: Well this potato chip, poker.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Chip, blue chip, you get that right chip in.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: Douglas, my three sons, I gotcha, gotcha?
- 1:05:45Speaker 12: Uh?
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: Curtis from Saint Louis writes in wanted to say thanks
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: for keeping our off season fun and full of great content.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: I'm always overly optimistic, so here's my hot take. May
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: will start Week five against Miami. The Patriots will finish
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: second in the division, ahead of Buffalo in New York
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: and they will sneak into the wildcard round. Then next
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: year we will continue to build around May in this
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: offense and become a real super Bowl contender in twenty twenty.
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: Five, let's go.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: I think that's really optimistic from Curtis and Saint Louis.
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: Good job, Curtis. That's that's springing a lot of positivity.
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: I don't think there's any chance that the Patriots finish
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: ahead of Buffalo, like maybe one of the gets hurt
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: and the Jets gets the Jets wall always Jets like
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: they'll find a way to blow it in New York.
- 1:06:36Speaker 6: But like the Bills, that's what I'm Pete Schrager picked,
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: you know, not but top seed in the a f C.
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: Peter Schrager on Good Morning Football this Morning picked the
- 1:06:45Speaker 6: Jets to be the top seed in the AFC.
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: An argument that that's the most talented roster in the
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: a f C. They can make that argument.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Last yeah, last year, even years to be last year
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: with that meant quarterback, they won eight games, right, yeah.
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: I think it was seven, but yeah, your point still.
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: Take Yeah, I mean, and that was a mess at quarterback.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: It's a really good roster it is. I don't know
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: how great the coaches, and I don't know how you
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: can rely on a forty whatever coming off of forty
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: one and Achilles.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: Well that's the big thing with the coaches that he's
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: never really had rubber hit the road, like, we don't
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: know what everybody's just don't know what's.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: Go I opened the floodgates in more ways than one.
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: I have to tinkle too, but I'm waiting for a break.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: We don't know what solid is.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Well, you know they take a break every ten minutes,
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: so you can do that.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: We don't do that.
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: I have a lot of bones to pick with Paul
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: shows these days, but I'm going to keep it to myself.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Let's say James Pettig grew the most interesting Patriots fan
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: of the world. Rites in question for the nerds, who
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: would that be?
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: I mean, I guess you guys can sit this one
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: out again.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: How much could Drake's mobility offset the old lines vulnerability
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: if he's a legit threat to run, does the defense
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: scheme differently or is Drake more of a scrambler than
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: a legit runner in defenses will blitz anyway.
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: He's more of a scrambler than a legit runner. But
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: I like that line of thought, like, yep, does that
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: back off the rush because you can't be as aggressive
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: going after a guy who can move.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I tend to think so it can work both
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: ways because if he's moving into pressure, then he can
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: create pressure. Like this is the old thing with Russell Wilson.
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: Like Russell Wilson over the years would hold the ball
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: forever and he'd run around and do the rust magic
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: and everybody be like, oh, look at how great this is.
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: And there are other people that would say, well, he's
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: running into pressure, right, So it's like, is it harder?
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: A lot of offensive linemen would say it's harder to
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: block for the Russell Wilson, Right, you don't know what
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: it is, right, Whereas Tom Brady was always in the
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: same spot. Now, his improvisational skill and his mobility should
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: help him get out of some things, you know, get
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: you know, the little houdiniacs and things like that. So
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: it goes both ways.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Well, I know, from a morale thing, when you've got
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: a team like third and ten and you everything's covered
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: and then that quarterback takes off and runs.
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: For the first down, it's a backbreaker. It does it
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: kills you?
- 1:09:06Speaker 12: It is?
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: It is, And I will say I feel pretty comfortable
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: in saying that if Drake May played the whole year,
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: he would be sacked more than Perssett will be if
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: he plays the whole year.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: I mean that's just kind of an age thing. But
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: also if you look at a lot of the mobile quarterbacks,
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: they get sacked a lot because they're running around always
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: looking to make a play and sometimes they catch him
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: behind the line of scrimmage. It just happens. Yeah, you know,
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: I think Russell Wilson is a guy especially to Evans point,
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: that's that falls into.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: This, especially early on in players careers at quarterback, because
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: they don't realize how fast these defensive guys are.
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: They can outrun them all in college.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: So that was one Like with Williams, I'll be interested
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: to see how many sacks he takes it.
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: So we were watching, Yeah, he'll he'll get sacked a
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: lot in Daniels will too.
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: I mean he even got sacked a lot at USC.
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: Yeah, but when we were I think it was the
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: first preseason game, the one that Joe Milton played played
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: well in in the fourth quarter. He had to play
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: in that game, I think it was one when he
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: sort of started running backwards and he was running around
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: and he looked around, and Brian Hoyer was with me,
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: and he goes that one wouldn't have worked out as
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: well if Gdvian Clowney was playing who was on the
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: Panthers that night, and right one of the thirty guys
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: that wasn't dressed right, And he goes, that wouldn't have
- 1:10:24Speaker 5: worked out as nearly as well. In other words, to
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: your point, Freddy, the defensive ends run, you know, as
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: well as those quarterbacks, you know, the athletic ones. I'm
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: not talking about every one of them, but the athletic
- 1:10:37Speaker 5: guys will run you down.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: Justin and new Hampshis says, I think I'm more excited
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: about three shows a week than I'm watching Jakobe Brissett
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: throw the ball.
- 1:10:44Speaker 6: Yay, okay, all right?
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: This year to foods here so much about just like
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: the how does everybody else look like? I know none
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: of us are super excited about watching Jacoby Wessett, but
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: some of their other younger players like are still going
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: to play a lot even if Drake may is on
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: the bench.
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: And maybe the level of blotting would be if the
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: Patriots came out and like put thirty four on.
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: The board, well they better watch out.
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: No, but I'm just saying, like, if that happens, it's
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: gonna be Yeah, but it's going to be like an
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: indictment of all of us and everybody else. That's position.
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: I hope it happens.
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: I'm not. I wouldn't.
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: He'll get buddled.
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: I'll have a rebuttal to that, because I've opened the
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: show without the Browns.
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: You showed the path.
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: The Browns have owned this defense in this team. So
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: if they scored thirty I would just say, well he
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: knows this, you know Van Pelt really, but there's.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: A difference between like having you know, like they could
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: win the game and not necessarily have a great offensive day. Yeah,
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: but I'm talking about that, like they just came out
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: and lit it up fire like that we didn't even
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: see for five seconds, right, Like.
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: Patriots might come off.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: I might take my shirt off in Cincinnati.
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: Be careful.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: It's easy to drink, it's easy to enjoy. Bud Light
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: is the official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: And need something to do before next week's kickoff, Well
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: it's this week's kickoff, Why not get your living room

- 1:13:33Speaker 14: a lot of times it's easy to say thank you
- 1:13:34Speaker 14: for your service, but there's a lot of sacrifice that
- 1:13:37Speaker 14: those guys give up for the safety of our country,
- 1:13:39Speaker 14: and you know, it's noticeable when you go out there,
- 1:13:42Speaker 14: so definitely wanted to make sure that was known, just
- 1:13:44Speaker 14: kind of, you know, to move forward. Excited to get
- 1:13:47Speaker 14: to this point in the season when now we're really
- 1:13:49Speaker 14: game planning for a team. This is an exciting time
- 1:13:53Speaker 14: for me personally, and I think for the players that
- 1:13:56Speaker 14: are in that room before we get into I'm sure
- 1:13:59Speaker 14: they'll questions about the quarterback and questions about Cincinnati. Hopefully
- 1:14:03Speaker 14: more questions about Cincinnati. Just wanted to wrap up one
- 1:14:06Speaker 14: thing with our captains, so this morning we had a vote,
- 1:14:10Speaker 14: and I do think it's very important that captains are
- 1:14:13Speaker 14: not selected by the coaches, but selected by their peers.
- 1:14:16Speaker 14: And the captains for this year's team, which this year
- 1:14:20Speaker 14: they'll have their seas. I do think it's important to
- 1:14:23Speaker 14: have the sea on the jerseys. That's one difference that
- 1:14:26Speaker 14: I think is important. But Andrews, Bentley, Pepper's, Joe Cardona
- 1:14:31Speaker 14: and Dietrich Wise, those are our captains for this year.
- 1:14:34Speaker 14: And look, they embody everything that we preach about each
- 1:14:37Speaker 14: and every day, not only on the football field, but
- 1:14:39Speaker 14: also off the football field. And I'm very excited to
- 1:14:42Speaker 14: have these guys and I know they're excited as well
- 1:14:44Speaker 14: to lead this football team.
- 1:14:46Speaker 6: One of the difference is wearing the scene.
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: Why is that important to you?
- 1:14:50Speaker 14: Yeah, you know, I was a captain seven out of
- 1:14:52Speaker 14: eight years, which look, once again, whatever happens inside the building,
- 1:14:56Speaker 14: that's always the most important thing. But I do think
- 1:14:58Speaker 14: it's like a badge of honor. It's a badge of honor,
- 1:15:00Speaker 14: and I think when guys do the right thing, they
- 1:15:03Speaker 14: should be recognized for those things. And you know, it's
- 1:15:05Speaker 14: something that's small, is just having the captain's patch. I
- 1:15:08Speaker 14: think it's important for those guys.
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: Jacobe not being voted a captain, do you think that?
- 1:15:15Speaker 14: Oh sorry, sorry sorry, Ember said sorry the good cat. Hey,
- 1:15:18Speaker 14: good catch, good catch. So just hit the lead on
- 1:15:21Speaker 14: those texts and all those tweets.
- 1:15:22Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 1:15:23Speaker 14: I appreciate you bringing that up. That was going to
- 1:15:27Speaker 14: be a fire But hey, thank you, thank you. I
- 1:15:30Speaker 14: definitely do appreciate that. I'm good on my opening statement.
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: You guys, fire away opening up the season.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: How excited are you in the job ahead at Cincinnati?
- 1:15:43Speaker 14: I'm very excited once again, you know, every day is
- 1:15:46Speaker 14: a learning experience for me and excited to go through
- 1:15:49Speaker 14: this week and really prepare, you know, with the guys
- 1:15:52Speaker 14: that are going to be out there on the field. Look, Cincinnati,
- 1:15:54Speaker 14: they offer many challenges offensively and defensively that we're going
- 1:15:58Speaker 14: to have to have answers for. And I think the
- 1:16:00Speaker 14: guys are ready to go. Today is a bonus day
- 1:16:02Speaker 14: for us. So just like I spoke about last week,
- 1:16:04Speaker 14: we really were still focused those last two days of
- 1:16:07Speaker 14: practice on getting any p better. What I will say
- 1:16:09Speaker 14: is that's still the message going forward, while at the
- 1:16:12Speaker 14: same time sprinkling in a few things here and there
- 1:16:15Speaker 14: that Cincinnati offers. And what I would say is, look,
- 1:16:18Speaker 14: they're a very versatile team. Obviously, they have a bunch
- 1:16:21Speaker 14: of great players on that team, and we just got
- 1:16:23Speaker 14: to be able to go out there and compete on
- 1:16:24Speaker 14: each and every day.
- 1:16:26Speaker 8: Just rewinding until last Thursday to showed us the courtesy
- 1:16:30Speaker 8: to come.
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: Out as you said you would thank.
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: You for doing that.
- 1:16:34Speaker 8: We didn't have as much time for follow up questions
- 1:16:36Speaker 8: if you had meetings that day, But how did you
- 1:16:39Speaker 8: come to the decision?
- 1:16:40Speaker 14: So yeah, I mean we had our process of you know,
- 1:16:44Speaker 14: talking to the coaches, the coordinators, you know, Elliot as well.
- 1:16:49Speaker 14: That was part of the process. But what I would
- 1:16:50Speaker 14: say is, ultimately was my decision to put who I
- 1:16:53Speaker 14: thought gave us the who I think gives us the
- 1:16:55Speaker 14: best chance to win football games. And hopefully you guys
- 1:16:58Speaker 14: got it last week. We're one hundred percent behind Jacoby.
- 1:17:01Speaker 14: He can't think about what's in the rearview mirror. He
- 1:17:03Speaker 14: has to be ready to drive this thing forward. And
- 1:17:05Speaker 14: I made sure that he understood that he has the full,
- 1:17:08Speaker 14: you know, full support of not only as teammates, but
- 1:17:11Speaker 14: also the organization for him to go out there and
- 1:17:13Speaker 14: perform at the level that we know he can.
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: Which was the rever any consideration to starting drink May
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: week Warder, as the plan always.
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: Been to try to Eastwood Wonger.
- 1:17:21Speaker 14: No, we always you know, we kept saying, look, competition, competition,
- 1:17:25Speaker 14: and you know that is something that I truly believe it,
- 1:17:28Speaker 14: and it was a real competition. It honestly came down
- 1:17:31Speaker 14: you know, to you know, a few days where that
- 1:17:33Speaker 14: separation started to happen. Now, the things that kind of
- 1:17:36Speaker 14: went into that, you know, that pot as far as
- 1:17:39Speaker 14: how we came out with this conclusion, I mean, there
- 1:17:41Speaker 14: were many things that were waited differently, and once again,
- 1:17:44Speaker 14: you know, I just feel like me personally as the
- 1:17:46Speaker 14: head coach here, that Jacoby gives us our best chance.
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: What do you take me to change between now and
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: Drake's first start, whatever that is for.
- 1:17:54Speaker 14: You to feel like it's time to play, you know,
- 1:17:57Speaker 14: for me, you know, we talk about competition and training camp,
- 1:17:59Speaker 14: but quite frankly, it's competition each and every week and
- 1:18:03Speaker 14: we'll see how it goes. But once again, I don't
- 1:18:05Speaker 14: want Jacoby to feel like someone's nipping at his heels
- 1:18:08Speaker 14: and he'll get the majority of the reps while at
- 1:18:11Speaker 14: the same time continuing to develop Drake in other ways. Now,
- 1:18:15Speaker 14: a lot of you guys, I guess the next question
- 1:18:16Speaker 14: will be how do you do that? Uh, he will
- 1:18:19Speaker 14: still participate, you know in some of the you know,
- 1:18:21Speaker 14: the team drills for the upcoming team, but I also think, uh,
- 1:18:25Speaker 14: you know, the show team reps are very important. They've
- 1:18:27Speaker 14: always been important, and even when I was a rookie,
- 1:18:30Speaker 14: I also was a top ten pick. But even as
- 1:18:32Speaker 14: a rookie, I was on those show teams, and I
- 1:18:35Speaker 14: think that's another place where you can develop as long,
- 1:18:37Speaker 14: I mean, as well as the other tools that we've
- 1:18:38Speaker 14: talked about here over the summer.
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: Misconception is it that he was brought into here, Jacoby
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: to be kind of a placeholder or a mentor or
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: whatever it's supposed to.
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: When he brings to the team as a starting.
- 1:18:49Speaker 14: Quarter he is a mentor, and I would say which
- 1:18:52Speaker 14: is reflected in the captain's voting. Thanks again, I think
- 1:18:56Speaker 14: he's a mentor to the entire offensive side of the ball.
- 1:18:58Speaker 14: He's familiar, you know, he's familiar with the offense.
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:19:01Speaker 14: And at the same time, you know, he knew he
- 1:19:03Speaker 14: was in a competition and still remain steady, which is
- 1:19:06Speaker 14: something you definitely appreciate from your quarterback position.
- 1:19:09Speaker 8: The health of the offense and.
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: The help with tens Jim out and play how.
- 1:19:13Speaker 10: Would get very low doing they ever out their league
- 1:19:16Speaker 10: last week to take the guard.
- 1:19:22Speaker 14: Yeah, so coming out of training camp, you know, we
- 1:19:24Speaker 14: had a we had a tough training camp and there
- 1:19:26Speaker 14: are definitely things that that popped up. We'll see if
- 1:19:29Speaker 14: if those guys are ready to play, But right now,
- 1:19:31Speaker 14: we just had to move forward, and we talked about
- 1:19:33Speaker 14: that next man up mentality, like we don't know if
- 1:19:35Speaker 14: he'll be at the game or not. He may wake
- 1:19:36Speaker 14: up tomorrow talking about low feeling great. I mean, I
- 1:19:40Speaker 14: just don't know. But going back to what we've done
- 1:19:42Speaker 14: the entire training camp as far as moving people around,
- 1:19:45Speaker 14: you know, we were trying to find our best five
- 1:19:47Speaker 14: while at the same time building depth through the guys
- 1:19:49Speaker 14: that we have on the team. And so that's the
- 1:19:51Speaker 14: difficult part of it. But as we continue through the week,
- 1:19:53Speaker 14: and this is why I'm gonna meet with you guys
- 1:19:55Speaker 14: on Friday, right Stacey, to talk a little bit more
- 1:19:58Speaker 14: like who's ready, who's not ready, And I'll try to
- 1:20:00Speaker 14: be as transparent as I can with you guys. I'm
- 1:20:02Speaker 14: not I'm not a guy. I mean, I'm not going
- 1:20:04Speaker 14: to get into, you know, trying to be cryptic or
- 1:20:06Speaker 14: anything like that. I'll just let you guys know the
- 1:20:09Speaker 14: truth and try to be as transparent as possible to
- 1:20:12Speaker 14: the Drake like Scout.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: Show team taking some team reps.
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: How about like I've heard.
- 1:20:20Speaker 8: Like a quarterback running a meeting, you know, like, is
- 1:20:24Speaker 8: that possibly if you talk to Alex or Ben or
- 1:20:27Speaker 8: tc about letting Drake install the game playing the night
- 1:20:30Speaker 8: before a game or something.
- 1:20:31Speaker 14: Yeah, So I mean we've done that.
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: We use that tool.
- 1:20:35Speaker 14: I think it's called like the finement technique. I think
- 1:20:37Speaker 14: that's what it's called. But I do believe like if
- 1:20:40Speaker 14: you can teach it, you have a true understanding of
- 1:20:43Speaker 14: the play of the game plan. When I first got
- 1:20:46Speaker 14: into coaching, I was teaching my son Cover two, which
- 1:20:49Speaker 14: I will say as a proud father right now, he
- 1:20:52Speaker 14: had six tackles two for a loss this past weekend
- 1:20:55Speaker 14: and block the field goal without jumping, and I thought
- 1:20:57Speaker 14: that was pretty cool. But what I will say is, look,
- 1:21:01Speaker 14: he'll have certain projects and things like that that he'll
- 1:21:04Speaker 14: be responsible for and saying that, look, he'll still go
- 1:21:07Speaker 14: through just a normal game week each and every week.
- 1:21:09Speaker 14: And that's how it's gonna be.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: As of today.
- 1:21:15Speaker 15: When someone accidentally threw a the school play costumes, oh no,
- 1:21:20Speaker 15: replacements were shipped with FedEx and with picture proof of delivery,
- 1:21:24Speaker 15: everyone could focus on the perfect opening night FedEx. Where
- 1:21:27Speaker 15: now it's next for residential delivery only and now great
- 1:21:33Speaker 15: moments in.
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: History.
- 1:21:36Speaker 7: So I love college football. He has no interest in
- 1:21:38Speaker 7: it until February, but it's so much. This weekend especially,
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: it is gonna be great. You know, Alabama Tennessee. There's
- 1:21:44Speaker 7: probably at least one future Patriot playing in that game,
- 1:21:48Speaker 7: so that would probably be it.
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: Okay, because he's patting himself on the back so much.
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: I'm gonna just say this, the reason why I don't
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: get into college football in the fall is because I
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: have what's called a girlfriend, and.
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: I had a shot fire ballot Saturday.
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: I spend it with Jess.
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: There you go.
- 1:22:09Speaker 5: I'm going to truly enjoy my Saturday this week.
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: And I thought you said we weren't doing.
- 1:22:13Speaker 5: We weren't doing personally.
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: That's another great moment.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: From so far, the college game has been pretty good,
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: some good games.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: Just for the record bag, we have to give.
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: We have to give congratulations to O'Brien BC Eagles for
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: beating the number ten team and the.
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: It might be the first time that I can recall
- 1:22:40Speaker 5: that I've ever rooted for Boston College and anything.
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: Because you're a Northeastern fan.
- 1:22:45Speaker 5: But I like Billy Oh, you want to be rooting
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: for him, and in all seriousness, now, listen, Florida State
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: is probably not very good, you know, based on the
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: start of this season, So I'm not over but it
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: just shows you how much a quality coach can change
- 1:23:01Speaker 5: a team. Like they don't have any different level of talent,
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: But how many penalties at BC have last night? Right,
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: how many times they get caught with the wrong personnel
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: on the field and that kind of stuff. Right, Like
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: they had an idea of how to play football. Now
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: you're not going to run for almost three hundred yards
- 1:23:17Speaker 5: against every team like they dominated Florida State last night.
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: But I just thought it was striking how much more
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: organized they looked. And I think athlete his predecessor was
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: not bad. I think he did a pretty good job then.
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: But I just think it's the difference between a guy
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: like Billy Oh and some of the predecessors. I don't
- 1:23:37Speaker 5: think they'll be great. I'm not trying to say I
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: have any illusions, but that was an impressive performance him
- 1:23:42Speaker 5: last night.
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: I'm a good start.
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: Seven eight wins not out of the question, right, eights.
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: He's not wrong about you see, he's a great school,
- 1:23:51Speaker 4: like academically a great school. It's right outside of Boston. Yeah.
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: He keeps saying like, why can't can't be.
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: A football school?
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's a lower standard a little bit, right,
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: it's not crazy.
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: You got to start recruiting and overlooking some things.
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: Right nowadays, you're going to have to find some of
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: that nil money.
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: I was going to say, you need to get in
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: that transfer portal.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: Well, there's a lot of triple legals in the area
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: that could fork over some money, right.
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: You know what have triple egle is what are the triples?
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: The person that goes, I believe, is the person who
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: goes to BC High, Boston College, and then Boston College grad.
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, I heard of the double legal. I never
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: heard of the triple. I don't think the grad students
- 1:24:31Speaker 5: are doing much good for BILLYO.
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: Though we talked earlier about the game in Brazil and
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: Christian from Virginia writes in uh, the drama down there
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: is that South Polo's soccer rival, Corinthians main color is green,
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: so South Polo fans don't really love people wearing green
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: in their stadium. This then got twisted by media into
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: some gang violence nonsense, which is most likely what you
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: guys were hearing.
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: The good news for those those fans, though, is neither
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: team will be wearing green. Eagles and Packers won't be
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: much green in the States as green as Cats.
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: I thought he's experienced. We could of got the Jets
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: involved in the Jets.
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: Green right, Ron and Conway New Hampshire. Okay, Evan, he says,
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: and the rest of the guys too. I guess I'm
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: not excited about this season, even though I really want
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: the team to do well. So after listening all season,
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: there was a small amount of conversation of when Cole
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Strange comes back, if he could possibly play center. If so,
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: how do you think the old line would look next year?
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: If everyone was healthy and the line look like this
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: with mayat quarterback, left tackle to right, draft Will Campbell,
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: then sow Or Robinson Andrews, and when U and Kayden
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: Wallace in the draft after Campbell, I wonder what the
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: team would consider as a pick.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: Yes, there is no period, so.
- 1:26:01Speaker 5: I would need to know what's so Robinson and Wallace
- 1:26:05Speaker 5: play like, yeah, yeah, but if they're good enough that
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: you don't feel like you got to replace him. If
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: they maybe you're implying, but they have the best I
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: have or are they good enough? Yeah, you know what
- 1:26:15Speaker 5: I mean, their guards like Andrews. Well, you know, I
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: have an idea of what he'll look like, and I
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: have an idea with the one who look like, when.
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: Did you start thinking about life after David Andrews.
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: That's not gonna be absolutely valuable. We've got a question
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: in the mailbag this week about that. Yeah, with Strange,
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: I'm sure that's you know, one of the things.
- 1:26:33Speaker 6: He's a backup center if he's going to play.
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: My fear with the whole center thing is like, let's
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: not that's not cold Strange center, Like, let's not draft
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: one in the first round because David Andrews retires like centers.
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: I know, but I'd rather have him.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: But it's not you know, like if there's if he
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: can be a good center, it's just like mccordy, uh, Devin, Yeah,
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: you know you drafted him as a cornerback. You you
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: realize maybe he'll be better at safety, and you switch
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: him over.
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: Yeah. I think the issue with Cole Strange to me
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: at center is that he's tall, like he's he's a
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: little bit upright to play center, Like he's like six three,
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: six four. It's a big center. That's a big, big,
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: big center, and I typically like more of like the
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: David Andrews types of centers that can get underneath guys.
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: And yeah, it's got a low center at gravity, So
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: that would be my one thing. But if they draft
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: Campbell or Telvin Banks Junior or whoever, and he's a
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: franchise left tackle, the whole thing is gonna be fine.
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: You know, it's gonna look a lot better.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: Eight eight five five past five hundred to get hotline
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: Rodney's and Delaware.
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: What's up? Rodney?
- 1:27:34Speaker 10: Thank god?
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: I had a question. So Rodney, you can hear me.
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: Rod I get no respect, doesn't.
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: Eldred?
- 1:27:43Speaker 5: Happened when I take the Eldred's in North Carolina?
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: Hey Aldred? Hey? Oh I didn't hear him?
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: Yeah, you'll shoot for you?
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: I can.
- 1:27:58Speaker 12: Can you hear me?
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: Yes?
- 1:27:59Speaker 13: Yeah?
- 1:28:00Speaker 12: Okay, okay, hey Fred, thank you for defending me a
- 1:28:05Speaker 12: little bit.
- 1:28:05Speaker 11: For all you.
- 1:28:06Speaker 12: Peons that don't understand the chart. Like I said, I
- 1:28:10Speaker 12: didn't make it up, but Deuce you picked up on
- 1:28:12Speaker 12: it right away. You know it's the talent level. Knuckleheads.
- 1:28:16Speaker 12: If you can't understand the talent level, go back listen
- 1:28:19Speaker 12: to the podcast and they'll tell you they're playing everything
- 1:28:22Speaker 12: to you.
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: Well, I understand the talent level, I understand, I don't
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: understand pink, orange, blue green, all that future pink.
- 1:28:29Speaker 12: Pink is a young like like me. He's the upcoming start,
- 1:28:33Speaker 12: but you don't know what he's gonna be like. But
- 1:28:35Speaker 12: he's up there him.
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: And maybe we understood it. Eligi, to be honest with you,
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: with too many categories, I know, I.
- 1:28:42Speaker 12: Know they got to build a foundation of a championship team.
- 1:28:46Speaker 12: That's what that means for the pion They don't understand
- 1:28:49Speaker 12: football charts.
- 1:28:50Speaker 13: But that's that.
- 1:28:51Speaker 12: But other than that, my question is the guys that
- 1:28:54Speaker 12: they the guys that they brought up, did they put
- 1:28:57Speaker 12: free agency wide well practice squad, those tackles and nick
- 1:29:01Speaker 12: guard you was talking about, anyway they push for a
- 1:29:04Speaker 12: starting position.
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: Did the ones that we got the waved off the waivers? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: the waves I would hardly doubt, highly doubt that.
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: Yeah, Demntre Jacobs has got some tools, but it seems
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: like uh, Trey Jacobs, I stand corrected. Uh, he's got
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: some tools, but he's the developmental type of player, good athlete, big,
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: you know, six six three fifteen, three twenty. But I
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: don't know if he's ready to contribute that the way
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: Eldrid is talking about.
- 1:29:34Speaker 5: Plus he's gotta learn the system and everything.
- 1:29:36Speaker 12: Yet a whole lot better than than what we've seen
- 1:29:39Speaker 12: doing pre seasons.
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: I don't know about that. Yeah, give me the quarterback.
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: I don't know if he's better than Vederian Lowe.
- 1:29:47Speaker 5: The guys that got cut. Yeah, like right, guys that
- 1:29:51Speaker 5: are off waivers, that are on their rookie contract that
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: get cut. I don't think we'll qualify as better than
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: what you have.
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: We're gonna believe our earlier email.
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: Or there's not too many teams with good defensive lines
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: and they got cut.
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: And the young ones that are making nothing because they
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: can't have, you know, four or more years experience to
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: to have to go through waivers.
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: All right, thanks, I'm looking forward to thank you. Okay,
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: thanks for the call. Yeah, I'm here, hear me, Okay,
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: we can hear yet.
- 1:30:24Speaker 16: Yeah, Okay, Seeing how bad all that the line is
- 1:30:28Speaker 16: doing right now, why not the Patriots try to make
- 1:30:31Speaker 16: the trade for Walker Little from Jacksonville so that we
- 1:30:34Speaker 16: don't have to spend the first round pick on the
- 1:30:36Speaker 16: table here to take the till McMillan from Arizona. Is
- 1:30:40Speaker 16: that a valuable option?
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: I don't really believe Walker Little is anything special. If
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: I remember correctly, he was. Also, there's something weird with
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: him in the in the drafts, like injuries or he's
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: like older. So I don't remember what it is off
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: the top of my head, but I don't. I'm not
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: gonna sit here and pretend like I want a bunch
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: of Walker Little tape over the last couple of years.
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: But I don't recall him being like that. We've now
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: solved this problem, set that tackle, you know, Like I
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: don't really view him quite on that lovel he's twenty five. Yeah,
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: there's something about him in the draft I don't remember.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: So just out of curiosity. If he's so good and
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: he would be better than drafting Will Campbell as an example,
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: why is he available? Yeah, Like the whole notion of
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: picking up someone else's scraps so you don't have to
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: take one in the first you know, the top top
- 1:31:35Speaker 5: five doesn't make sense to me, Like, why would you
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: assume that Walker Little is a better option than Will Campbell? Oh?
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: Yeah, so it was injuries? So in college. In his
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: last two years in college, he played one game because
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: he had so many injuries in college on tap talent,
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: so I remembered kind of health. But yeah, I mean.
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: Second round pick in twenty one. Yeah, so he's available,
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: I assume, forgive me, but I don't know the depth
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: charts of thirty two teams on the offensive line.
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: Very surprised, Paul.
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: So this is a guy who should be if he's
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: that good, and he was. He went in the second
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: round instead of the first because of injuries at Stanford, right, yep,
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: But he's not playing for the Jags, so we can
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: get him. And that's better than Will Campbell. And by
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: the way, the guy that he mentioned, and this is
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: I'm not picking because the guy had an unbelievable game.
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: The guy you mentioned, the receiver from Arizona. Can't pronounce
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: his first name, but we call him t mac just
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: to he's got Oh.
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: He was talking about Ted mckillan mcmill millings.
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: Because me, he had three hundred yards receiving in the
- 1:32:46Speaker 5: opening game and he is considered to be one of
- 1:32:50Speaker 5: the top wide receivers coming out right, I am very intrigued.
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: So Antennas are all the way up. So he goes
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: to the University of Arizona. I know the backup quarterback McMillan,
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: So his name is I think he's like Samoan or something.
- 1:33:06Speaker 4: I should probably do that, not just say something so
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: Ted mckill McMillan. I keep seeing mckillan for some reason.
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: You kind of just say it for short. But he
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: is a prototypical talk about X receivers, like he's six ' five.
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: You know, he's in the same body type of like
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: a Drake London in Atlanta. Some people say Mike Evans.
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: I've retired Mike Evans from player comps. I think he's
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: too good. Like I don't try not to comp people.
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: The players like Mike Evans, but he's in that sort
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: of category of like big time outside receiver, moves incredibly
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: well for his size, and is going to be top
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: fifteen to twenty pick in the draft next year.
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: Ten in Las Vegas writes in I haven't heard the
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: question asked who will be the backup quarterback to Brissett
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: and who will be the emergency third quarterback? It was yeah,
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: Drake may is the backup quarterback. He says, I think
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: I'd prefer Milton to be the backup rather than May
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: and maybe the emergency. I don't know if May's first
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: appearance should be coming in as a backup why, Well,
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: no matter when he at this point, no matter when
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: he comes in, he's going to be coming in as
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: the backup.
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: Well, I think his point is he would like him
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: to prepare it in the middle of the game as
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: a starter. But I don't really know why. What's the difference.
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: Yeah, let's let's not coddle the guy.
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: We've already already.
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: And what did you see from Joe?
- 1:34:33Speaker 6: Like, I was kind of disappointed in Joe Milton summer,
- 1:34:36Speaker 6: to be honest, Not that I was expecting much, but
- 1:34:38Speaker 6: I just didn't see a lot of progress.
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: Really.
- 1:34:40Speaker 6: Yeah, maybe it was there if you looked at the
- 1:34:42Speaker 6: minor details.
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: But five for eighteen not doing it for you.
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: No, that's a good way of putting in Mike he
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: kind of It wasn't that he was ever terrible. It
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: just ye had that one opening preseason game was good
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: and then it just kind of leveled off from there
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: and it never Drake May got better.
- 1:34:59Speaker 5: The last the preseason games were really rough for Milton.
- 1:35:02Speaker 6: It just became throw the ball deep. Just throw the
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: ball deep, That's all I want to And that.
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: Kind of coincided with him. And this is probably not
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: coincidental with him really getting almost no reps to it
- 1:35:13Speaker 5: like that. That's once the preseason game started, his reps
- 1:35:16Speaker 5: almost disappeared in practice, So it's probably not a coincidence
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: of that girl performance in the games really went down.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: David Mayne writes in when coach Mayo announced Jacoby Brissett
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: as the starting quarterback, I really wish a media person
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: would have asked him if starting the solid but non
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: mobile average quarterback over the young athletic playmaking rookie was
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: something he learned from Bill. Mayo was so bound and
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: determined to be the opposite of Bill that I bet
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: he would do a one to eighty and start may instead.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: I say that tongue in cheek, but I do think
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: there's some truth there that brings me to my question,
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: in your opinion, why was Bill so terrible about building offense?
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: From Nikhil Harry to taking Cole Strange of the first
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: round to making Maddy PC. I feel like in the
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: last few years he drafted a lot of old linemen,
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: Yet here we are. Do you think this was just
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: a lack of respect for offensive football. Was he trying
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: to sabotage Mac because he didn't want him to in.
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: The first place.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: I still to this day can't understand how the greatest
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: coach ever made such terrible decisions.
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: How long we going?
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: No, I think he struggled late. I mean, I don't
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: think he had a hard time now. Obviously Brady helps that,
- 1:36:29Speaker 5: but I don't think we picked apart every move that
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: he made offensively over the years. Now, certainly Mike plays
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: the greatest hits of the last seven eight nine years
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: or so. He struggled, and I think it was less
- 1:36:43Speaker 5: about identifying, you know, like Nikhil Harry's an identification problem,
- 1:36:47Speaker 5: that's an evaluation issue. I think they ignored it more,
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: you know, too.
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: Often towards the end, especially.
- 1:36:54Speaker 6: I just I don't know if it's a cliched as
- 1:36:56Speaker 6: just the old guy who gets set in his ways
- 1:36:58Speaker 6: and just doesn't want to change. That's kind of got
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: used to having a quarterback and an offensive coordinator who
- 1:37:04Speaker 6: just kind of made things run.
- 1:37:06Speaker 5: And I know what things he could still do was
- 1:37:08Speaker 5: the offensive lineman. Like WHENU was his, so was his
- 1:37:11Speaker 5: And those are guys that are playing, and I would
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: count David Andrews in that group, even though he wasn't
- 1:37:15Speaker 5: a draft pick. He was an undrafted rookie that they
- 1:37:18Speaker 5: developed and he played right away.
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: It's just the high round misses. And I think the
- 1:37:21Speaker 6: thing that stood out to me was like when Drake
- 1:37:22Speaker 6: may or Christian Gonzalez is on the field this summer,
- 1:37:25Speaker 6: they're different, They're different, They're talent, they are super talented
- 1:37:28Speaker 6: athletic guys, and there was none of those guys on
- 1:37:32Speaker 6: the roster the last few years, you know. I mean,
- 1:37:33Speaker 6: it was just it was so hard, the high round misses,
- 1:37:36Speaker 6: the lack of talent. But I just there's a lot
- 1:37:40Speaker 6: going on there. I will never be able to figure out, though,
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: how the Matt Patricia thing of it all coaching the line,
- 1:37:46Speaker 6: how that was? How was that?
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: I think that Bill got overconfident when he drafted Steven
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Neil and he ended up being a really good guard.
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: I think Stephen Neil was undrafted, wasn't he he was?
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: But I think at the point, but I think that
- 1:37:59Speaker 5: they had really good success with Lineman. Yeah, yeah, I
- 1:38:02Speaker 5: think that.
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: Well, and because they had Dante well.
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: Because he but he also I think ways like lineman
- 1:38:12Speaker 5: haven't changed dramatically. Now there's some that that's maybe moving
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: to a more athletic lineman, but there's still like the
- 1:38:18Speaker 5: principles of line player, the same guy in front of
- 1:38:22Speaker 5: you right. Offense in general has changed dramatically, and I
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: think as it's gone from Corey Dillon leading the way
- 1:38:29Speaker 5: to the quarterback being the focal point, I think he's
- 1:38:31Speaker 5: been slow to adjust.
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I just think he never he never put the
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: value in the receiver position the way that the rest
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: of the league did, Like that trend hit, and he
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: was still all this draft this guy or signed DeVante Parker,
- 1:38:49Speaker 4: trade for DeVante Parker, you know, depressed Nelson Agalre, Kendrick Bourne,
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: and I love Kendrick.
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: I think, you know, like I think there's a whole thing.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: It comes down to locker room economics. He was very
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: aware of, you know, what the economics and the culture
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: of the locker room was. And I think he looked
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: as a football team as this unit that you know,
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: I'd rather have a bunch of guys who love football,
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: can play together, are coachable. Football is important than have
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: these one or two divas. And I think he was
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: really wary of getting those types of guys on his team,
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: and when he did, they were like the retreads.
- 1:39:29Speaker 5: That used to be a dealers.
- 1:39:32Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: Tony never won IM ring and now was just grateful
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: to be given that chance. And so you come in
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: with that sense of gratitude and loyalty to me. I
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: know that if he was here, he called me a moron.
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: And I'm being serious, but I think there's something to that.
- 1:39:50Speaker 5: But that was just about content, not necessarily right.
- 1:39:53Speaker 6: But I do think Fred, you you know you're you
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: could be right about that. But it's like, but once
- 1:39:57Speaker 6: the team starts losing, then no one cares about the hierarchy.
- 1:39:59Speaker 6: They care that you suck and you're getting your teeth
- 1:40:01Speaker 6: kicked in every week and you can't move the ball.
- 1:40:03Speaker 5: You don't have enough talent to move the you know
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: what I mean, you have Tom Brady.
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: It just covered they never He never valued the wide
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: receiver position the way the rest of the league was
- 1:40:13Speaker 4: starting to value it. And the NFL is one of
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: those things where like the money just follow the money,
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: like what are teams spending money on? And all of
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: a sudden, the wide receiver position just became a thirty
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: million dollars a year position for the elite guys, and
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: he would never pay a wide receiver that kind of
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: money because he just didn't see the value in it.
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: And he didn't Well it's again, you might be right
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: in terms of not seeing the value in it, but
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: the reason he didn't value it is because of the
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: how it would disrupt his locker room and how it
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: disrupted the pecking goal.
- 1:40:47Speaker 5: I think that's the whole I think that's valid. Yeah,
- 1:40:49Speaker 5: I think that's absolutely valid. But I think what Evan's
- 1:40:51Speaker 5: saying is valid too. It wasn't just like the higher archy.
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: Like you can't say he didn't value Randy Moss.
- 1:40:58Speaker 5: Of course he did, yeah, but at that at that
- 1:41:00Speaker 5: price again and a depressed assets and as soon as
- 1:41:04Speaker 5: Randy Moss. But I think as important as what you
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: were talking about is the mentality of the like the
- 1:41:12Speaker 5: the grateful attitude, like you owe this to Bill. It's
- 1:41:17Speaker 5: not just about the money he was making. It's I'm
- 1:41:20Speaker 5: giving him his last chance, that's right, So I'm going
- 1:41:22Speaker 5: to get the most out of him.
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:41:23Speaker 5: I don't mind if he's going to get some money,
- 1:41:26Speaker 5: but because he owes it to me, and I think
- 1:41:29Speaker 5: that was part of it. There's a lot of things
- 1:41:31Speaker 5: that people have said about what Mayo has done so
- 1:41:34Speaker 5: far that well, Bill never would have done that. It's
- 1:41:36Speaker 5: been a lot of things so far, most of which
- 1:41:38Speaker 5: I don't think are true, Like when they signed far
- 1:41:41Speaker 5: More to an extension and Stevenson Joia. Bill would have
- 1:41:44Speaker 5: never done that. They just did the same thing like
- 1:41:46Speaker 5: last year to Godshaw into Devonte Parker. Guys like that. Right,
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: this is one that is one thousand percent true. There's
- 1:41:54Speaker 5: no way they would have gone as aggressively after Brandon
- 1:41:57Speaker 5: Ayuk as the Patriots did, offering a thirty plus million
- 1:42:01Speaker 5: dollar annual value contract and investing resources to get him.
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: Now to guarantee Poe.
- 1:42:09Speaker 5: But if somehow he fell through the cracks and he
- 1:42:11Speaker 5: becomes Randy Moss and I can get him for a
- 1:42:13Speaker 5: fourth round pick and paying peanuts. Now he owes me right,
- 1:42:18Speaker 5: these guys were looking to come here. I agree with Evan.
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: He doesn't value does not value that position. He looks
- 1:42:24Speaker 5: at everybody else is now.
- 1:42:25Speaker 4: He looks like it. Teams like Miami, who he thinks
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: three three players are taking up like you know, however
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: much of their cap it's to a Tyreek Hill and
- 1:42:35Speaker 4: Jalen Waddle and he's like idiots like idiots, right, But
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: the rest of the league is that's how it's now
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: being structured.
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: Well, it used to be like, well, how do you
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: sustain that?
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: Well, you can sustain it by manipulating the cap later on,
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: so all the cap is so high. Yeah, so you know,
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: Tyreek killed the size of retired, which I thought, by
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: the way, he was going to do after this year.
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: But anyway, you know, so he's gone, all right, so
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: maybe yet you're left with a whole bunch of dead money.
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: You figure it out by moving some other contracts around.
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: There's a way to sustain it.
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: Yeah. He went on TV whatever gig he was doing,
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: and he was waxing poetic about how great of a
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: job Kansas City has done running their cap, completely ignoring
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: the fact that they have Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback.
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: And it's like, yeah, when Patrick Mahomes is your quarterback,
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: you can trade Tyreek Hill and you still are going
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: to win Super Bowls.
- 1:43:28Speaker 5: Because you have Again, they just speaks to the right,
- 1:43:33Speaker 5: So we don't have to beat up on Bill. The
- 1:43:35Speaker 5: guy's track record and resume speaks for itself. But it
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: just speaks to his mentality that he still thinks it's
- 1:43:41Speaker 5: about him.
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: But the problem is, and listen, I love Bill, I'm
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: grateful for everything he's done, so don't get me wrong,
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: But when he says that no one challenges him, well
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: because nobody pushes back.
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: But they have Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:43:54Speaker 5: Because they have they're just so happy to be around.
- 1:43:57Speaker 5: Like it's like college game day.
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: They got rid of type kill and they still won
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: a Super Bowl.
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: Suddenly it's like, you know, Shacky green Sabin up there,
- 1:44:07Speaker 5: like he just he comes out and says, uh, you know,
- 1:44:09Speaker 5: you gotta run the football. That's so true. Coach, that's
- 1:44:13Speaker 5: so true.
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: But that's like because it's Pat mcavie.
- 1:44:15Speaker 5: It's just unbelievable the way they fawn over Bill and
- 1:44:18Speaker 5: Nick Sabe and like, listen, great coaches arguably the best
- 1:44:22Speaker 5: to ever do it at their respective levels. Right, I'm
- 1:44:24Speaker 5: not telling you anything is overrated, But does everything they
- 1:44:28Speaker 5: have to say be so insightful? Does it have to
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: be like like mind bending, like football knowledge when they're
- 1:44:35Speaker 5: just talking in generalities like everybody, but did you hear
- 1:44:38Speaker 5: the sabing thing this week? Like you know that they
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: have a twenty million dollar roster with an io, Well
- 1:44:42Speaker 5: you better have the right twenty million, otherwise it'll go
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: worth a bleep. You would have thought that, like, oh really, yeah, really,
- 1:44:50Speaker 5: you don't want to waste money on bad players like that.
- 1:44:53Speaker 5: This is like insight, right, Like you want to make
- 1:44:55Speaker 5: sure that if you're spending a lot of money on
- 1:44:56Speaker 5: your roster, those.
- 1:44:57Speaker 4: Guys play right and they're good.
- 1:45:00Speaker 5: Of course, it's the same in the NFL.
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: Right, if you have a first round draft pick, you
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: better make sure you use that on a good player.
- 1:45:05Speaker 5: You better make sure he's not bleep, right.
- 1:45:08Speaker 6: I think that twenty nineteen season, though, was such a
- 1:45:10Speaker 6: good example because you draft to kill Harry in the
- 1:45:12Speaker 6: first you went and grabbed the Antonio Brown, and then
- 1:45:15Speaker 6: you traded a second round pick for Mohammed Sanu. It
- 1:45:17Speaker 6: was like, you know, three different pieces that showed that
- 1:45:19Speaker 6: they were kind of searching for it but picking the
- 1:45:22Speaker 6: wrong guys.
- 1:45:23Speaker 5: Well, I said, the evaluations was an issue with Harry.
- 1:45:26Speaker 5: There were guys available that were a lot better than him,
- 1:45:29Speaker 5: and as we all know, the Bobo told us that
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: if we thought that dk Metcalf was a better player
- 1:45:35Speaker 5: than Kaneil Harry, we were an idiot.
- 1:45:38Speaker 6: It's carry out of the league now, did he get cut?
- 1:45:40Speaker 4: I probably, but that's what he switched positions, the tight end.
- 1:45:43Speaker 5: That's what Mike Lombardi famously told us. Right if you
- 1:45:46Speaker 5: think that dk Metcalf was a better player than Kaneil Harry, yes,
- 1:45:50Speaker 5: I know it was always called him.
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: It's just always so tough for me, the captain and
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: Kanil when we.
- 1:45:57Speaker 4: Can look at it as as media types Layman's as
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: Fred likes to say, and say, you drafted Nikhil Harry
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: over A J. Brown and Deebo Samuel, like what are you?
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: What are you doing? But then the greatest coach of
- 1:46:10Speaker 4: all time like evaluated the players and came out with
- 1:46:13Speaker 4: Nikhil Harry And.
- 1:46:14Speaker 5: It just doesn't make sense.
- 1:46:15Speaker 4: It just that's the part that I can never And this.
- 1:46:18Speaker 5: Goes back and this is why I kind of agree
- 1:46:20Speaker 5: with Evan how he just doesn't really value that spot.
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: And it goes back to that excerpt from that book
- 1:46:25Speaker 5: a long time ago with Dimatrov talking about when he
- 1:46:29Speaker 5: made the move in Atlanta to move up to get
- 1:46:31Speaker 5: Julio Jones and he asked, he called Belichick and asked
- 1:46:34Speaker 5: for advice, and he said, why would you do that?
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: Just stay where you are and take Jonathan Baldwin again.
- 1:46:40Speaker 5: I don't want that that guy like. This is why
- 1:46:43Speaker 5: I think both of you are right. I don't want
- 1:46:45Speaker 5: the entitled star. I want the workman like guys. It's
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: going to be grateful to me for drafting the first
- 1:46:51Speaker 5: round row. We know.
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: The background on Nikhil Harry compared to some of these
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: other guys was he's a he's not as hard, not
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: as much of a boss.
- 1:47:01Speaker 6: You know, you probably liked the physicality and he looks
- 1:47:05Speaker 6: like in thedonnas, I mean, it's not hard. He even
- 1:47:07Speaker 6: talked about the prototypical acts of h I mean, you
- 1:47:09Speaker 6: can look at Nikhil Harry without watching him play and
- 1:47:11Speaker 6: just his body type and say he's got the size
- 1:47:13Speaker 6: to play outside, he's got a willingness to like, you know,
- 1:47:15Speaker 6: you could maybe understand what they were trying to sell
- 1:47:17Speaker 6: themself something.
- 1:47:18Speaker 3: This is good when he wasn't throwing up behind the
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: light pole about Harry.
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: Practice anyway, Travis in West Virginia rights and no, I don't,
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: but you don't remember.
- 1:47:30Speaker 5: Probably more off here.
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: Travis in West Virginia is the new pre and post
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: game guy talking about mattis going to be the host
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: for the whole season. Yes, So would you mind giving
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: me a quick bio of him, just so I know
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: his story and the genesis of his nickname. Well, he's
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: he's a senior executive producer of the Patriots. So all
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: the team, the preseason game and the TV shows that
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: you see. Uh, he produces all of those. And he
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: came here like what twenty years ago? Oh yeah, at
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: least from Channel five. He was a producer there. And
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: I believe, well we know that we call him No
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: Socks because when he wears shoes, he doesn't wear socks.
- 1:48:11Speaker 3: When he wear sneakers, he does.
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: But I don't know, I don't know if No Socks
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: would admit this, but I think he got the no
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: shoes with socks from Mike Lynch Swinger, who was the
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: sports guy, longtime sportscaster here in Boston, and whenever I'd
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: see them, because back then Channel four wasn't the station
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: was Channel five was the partner with the Page Access
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: Channel five, and when Mike Lynch would come in here
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: to film, he'd never have socks with his shoes.
- 1:48:38Speaker 5: First, my first stinch on All Access was Channel.
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: So I think I think Matt, Matt No Socks got
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: it from Mike Lynch.
- 1:48:44Speaker 4: He also loves flops Matt Smith. So when you guys
- 1:48:47Speaker 4: say no socks, I always think about him on the
- 1:48:49Speaker 4: road just walking around with the dogs out.
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:48:53Speaker 5: He is also the coast of Pass from the Past
- 1:48:55Speaker 5: with Paul.
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: He's also on Think a college bomber shout out.
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: I didn't know.
- 1:49:00Speaker 5: So his long career mostly behind the scenes, behind yeah
- 1:49:05Speaker 5: that's what I said. Yeah, not on behalf behind behind
- 1:49:08Speaker 5: and now he's you know, he asked Mike and I
- 1:49:12Speaker 5: like in the off season when we figured out that
- 1:49:14Speaker 5: Hardy wasn't coming back, Well, what do you think if
- 1:49:16Speaker 5: I host? Yeah, you know, of course he's my boss.
- 1:49:18Speaker 5: So I really feel like I was comfortable enough to say, well,
- 1:49:20Speaker 5: I really don't like that idea all.
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: But he knows.
- 1:49:24Speaker 6: He's been around a lot, and as I said on
- 1:49:26Speaker 6: the air during the pregame show, he's down in this
- 1:49:28Speaker 6: KSP studio, so there's just a high amount of foot traffic,
- 1:49:32Speaker 6: so he's talking to everybody and he.
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: Knows a lot of constant chatter. But he is one
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: of my favorite road trip guys that I've ever road
- 1:49:40Speaker 4: tripped with. I call him appetizer Matt because you go
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: to a restaurant with him and he's got a bud
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: light in his hand and get through the door, and
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: then he and then he tells the waiter, why don't
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: you bring another bud lights because by the time you
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: get back, I'll be done with this one, said this.
- 1:49:56Speaker 5: One, I've been here before, and this one has a
- 1:49:58Speaker 5: hole in it.
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: Yeah, and then he'll order every single appetizer on the menu.
- 1:50:03Speaker 3: He's a good restaurant guy.
- 1:50:05Speaker 5: He is a restaurant guy. He's a good conversationalist. He's
- 1:50:09Speaker 5: good to do that stuff. And Freddy, I mean, this
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: is no slight to you, Freddie, okay, because we had
- 1:50:15Speaker 5: some great road trips me you and Andy.
- 1:50:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 1:50:21Speaker 5: So we've had a lot of storytelling over the years,
- 1:50:24Speaker 5: and Matt's right in line with that kind of stuff.
- 1:50:27Speaker 5: So I can see Evan, why you while you enjoy that.
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: H Travis also says, also, can you tell No Socks
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: that when he takes phone calls, he doesn't need to
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: point out that the caller was waiting patiently every single time.
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: Chances are they're not actually patient anyway. So yeah, No
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: Socks is going to have to understand that you're gonna
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: have to take your hits because our listeners and our
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: viewers are very.
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: Nasty, critical, and that's what they just want to get
- 1:50:55Speaker 5: the best out of. That's what we want. We want
- 1:50:57Speaker 5: biting commentary, that's what we're looking for. So I would
- 1:51:00Speaker 5: just say that was Matt's first show this week, and
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: I think he sort of Mike and I talked to
- 1:51:08Speaker 5: him a little bit about like, you don't have to
- 1:51:09Speaker 5: feel compelled to jump on every email and call as
- 1:51:13Speaker 5: soon as you get it. To breathe a little bit,
- 1:51:15Speaker 5: to breathe, like if we're talking to the topic, you know,
- 1:51:18Speaker 5: like preseason pregame show, not exactly you know, two hours
- 1:51:22Speaker 5: worth of content there, but there will be, you know,
- 1:51:25Speaker 5: when the season starts, we'll have some stuff and you
- 1:51:27Speaker 5: don't necessarily have to like stop everything you're doing. All right,
- 1:51:31Speaker 5: someone's up on the on the call screen, and we
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: got to take that call right away. I think he felt, well,
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: he's been waiting patiently. We got to get to him.
- 1:51:37Speaker 5: That's why he kept saying, Fred doesn't care. Fred, it's rude, Fred, Fred,
- 1:51:45Speaker 5: it's rude. We just started to show.
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: As opposed to Hardy, who never read emails.
- 1:51:49Speaker 5: Hardy was anti electronic.
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: Yeah, he didn't like people emailing, and then when he
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: would finally read it, he'd pretend he was Shakespeare.
- 1:51:58Speaker 5: On the you know.
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: But speaking of phone calls, let's get back to the
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: A Sticket hotline at eight five five past five one hundred.
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: James is in North Carolina.
- 1:52:07Speaker 5: Hey James, James, Hey guys, I'm here.
- 1:52:12Speaker 13: Can hear me?
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: We can hear you? All right?
- 1:52:15Speaker 13: Good? So first of Paul Captain and Kneil is sneaky good.
- 1:52:22Speaker 5: Sneaky good.
- 1:52:23Speaker 3: That was me.
- 1:52:23Speaker 5: That was That was Fred's line. But I got it again.
- 1:52:25Speaker 5: The only guy in the room. I got it. I'm
- 1:52:27Speaker 5: the only one old enough.
- 1:52:32Speaker 10: I brought it the other day.
- 1:52:36Speaker 5: Hello, all right, what's going on?
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: You're doubled? Are you? Are you juggling things right now?
- 1:52:45Speaker 13: Carr stold my phone call. It's all good. So I
- 1:52:48Speaker 13: brought this to Rook the other day. How would you
- 1:52:52Speaker 13: guys feel about trying to address wide receiver by starting
- 1:52:56Speaker 13: at the bottom and looking at scouting. Pittsburgh pulled gems
- 1:53:03Speaker 13: out of the draft every single year. Nobody's got to
- 1:53:08Speaker 13: take a look over at their scouting department.
- 1:53:12Speaker 4: Yeah, well, why would Pittsburgh give up their wide receiver guru.
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: Well, well, maybe giving him a promotion less money at
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: a scouting direction. Yeah, No, it's I mean, it's not
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: a bad theory in identifying who around the league is
- 1:53:31Speaker 2: a really good evaluator of wide receivers, in promoting them,
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: giving them more money and a promotion to get them
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: over here.
- 1:53:39Speaker 5: So just because you want Tom to identify a wide receiver.
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: To help you ongoing to help you know, part of
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: my scouting.
- 1:53:46Speaker 5: I think Kevin Colbert was the reason for Pittsburgh scouting
- 1:53:49Speaker 5: dominance and he's out of the league to retire.
- 1:53:52Speaker 6: But would you say that an element of continuity there too?
- 1:53:55Speaker 6: Though it seems like, you know, stable coaching staff seem
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: like their system was kind of in place. Knew what
- 1:53:59Speaker 6: they were looking for. Have people that have been there
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: had come up, you know, knowing what they were looking
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: I mean, is that part of it too?
- 1:54:05Speaker 4: Yeah, gonna go chat the egg with it, Like, how
- 1:54:08Speaker 4: do you know how much of it is evaluation and
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: how much of it is development? Thanks James, because so
- 1:54:13Speaker 4: I would go with the development part now, because like
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: they've had some guys over the years that Antonio Brown,
- 1:54:21Speaker 4: It's like a sixth round pick. Now, some of that
- 1:54:22Speaker 4: was because of the off field stuff.
- 1:54:24Speaker 5: And Annuel Sanders and Antonio Brown. I believe we're in
- 1:54:27Speaker 5: the same draft fourth and sixth round. Yeah wow, or
- 1:54:30Speaker 5: maybe back to back years.
- 1:54:31Speaker 4: Yeah, Like that to me is development, right, that's what
- 1:54:34Speaker 4: And Antonio Brown didn't play right away because it was
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: a crowded and so they those two guys to me
- 1:54:40Speaker 4: are like development. They also had like Chase Claypool, who
- 1:54:43Speaker 4: was the most talented guy that's probably come out out
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: of the draft at that position in a couple of years,
- 1:54:47Speaker 4: and it just didn't work out, you know, had one
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: good year and didn't work out. So yeah, they have
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: a great track record with wide receivers. I just don't
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: know how much of that.
- 1:54:56Speaker 5: It's all of it.
- 1:54:56Speaker 4: It's coaching, it's development, it's evaluation. How do you replicate that?
- 1:55:01Speaker 6: One other thing, I saw Brady doing one of his
- 1:55:03Speaker 6: things that he's been doing, but he was talking about
- 1:55:06Speaker 6: receivers that couldn't get it and guys that you know,
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: this guy can't even line up right. He'd used Welker
- 1:55:10Speaker 6: as an example of like Wes, I knew, no matter what,
- 1:55:13Speaker 6: even if he doesn't catch the ball, he's gonna go
- 1:55:14Speaker 6: one hundred Miles, probably he's going to be in the
- 1:55:16Speaker 6: right place. And he was pretty forthcoming about if the
- 1:55:20Speaker 6: guy doesn't know what he's doing, he's not getting the ball,
- 1:55:22Speaker 6: and you know, so I just I think, and I
- 1:55:24Speaker 6: brought it up before on the show, if he was
- 1:55:26Speaker 6: part of that like and for better or worse, And
- 1:55:28Speaker 6: you certainly got much more good than you got bad
- 1:55:30Speaker 6: with Brady, but I think you also had a very
- 1:55:32Speaker 6: high bar for what it took to be successful. And
- 1:55:35Speaker 6: I mean I wonder if if maybe some of that's Nikill.
- 1:55:37Speaker 6: I mean, obviously ni Kill Harry hasn't worked out, but
- 1:55:39Speaker 6: you know, it's it was tough to play for Tom
- 1:55:41Speaker 6: Brady and to be able, and I'm sure once you
- 1:55:42Speaker 6: were up against it, it only got harder because he's
- 1:55:46Speaker 6: looking less and less your way. He doesn't trust you,
- 1:55:48Speaker 6: and you know, it gets harder, so he an he
- 1:55:50Speaker 6: kills part of it too.
- 1:55:51Speaker 3: If Jalen Pope does well, does that like.
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: Give you a little bit more confidence or does the
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: mistakes of the last few years still go on this
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: current scouting department?
- 1:56:03Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 1:56:04Speaker 5: I think a guy like Thornton it was still credited
- 1:56:07Speaker 5: was mac Growe remember, like remember mac growe belligerently, like
- 1:56:12Speaker 5: speaking to us and all, you've been grinding all the
- 1:56:15Speaker 5: tape and you know at that post draft press conference
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: that year. But yeah, for the most part, this is
- 1:56:19Speaker 5: a new group. There's the new guys that are picking
- 1:56:22Speaker 5: the play.
- 1:56:22Speaker 6: I mean, I'm picky. I just think, like, you know,
- 1:56:24Speaker 6: to find a slot receiver, you know, you should be
- 1:56:26Speaker 6: able to do that. You should be able to find
- 1:56:28Speaker 6: a guy like pol who you know, it looks like
- 1:56:30Speaker 6: a solid, good sized possession receiver. The test for me
- 1:56:33Speaker 6: is getting the one getting that, you know, being able
- 1:56:35Speaker 6: to pull an Antonio Brown out of the sixth round
- 1:56:37Speaker 6: those kind of thing, is that, you know, that's the
- 1:56:40Speaker 6: true test of talent evaluation is finding an elite wide receiver.
- 1:56:44Speaker 6: You know, these guys are good and they're solid, and
- 1:56:46Speaker 6: I think there are two pieces in place that you
- 1:56:48Speaker 6: need to win football.
- 1:56:50Speaker 5: Is solid.
- 1:56:50Speaker 4: You know, they're solid pieces.
- 1:56:53Speaker 6: You need the needle mover guy not make it.
- 1:56:57Speaker 5: But you can't do that, you know, like, no, but
- 1:56:59Speaker 5: that's fine.
- 1:57:00Speaker 4: Bill was really grinding Liberty tape in the sixth round.
- 1:57:03Speaker 5: But I'm okay with that. But I'm just saying it's
- 1:57:07Speaker 5: not like they haven't been able to find complimentary pieces.
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: To Mike's point, they haven't been Nikhil Harry was supposed
- 1:57:14Speaker 5: to be the home run right, right, and they haven't
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: been able to.
- 1:57:18Speaker 4: Get that guy.
- 1:57:18Speaker 5: The high end guys, you know, first second round picks
- 1:57:21Speaker 5: Aaron Dobson, you know, and no one's killing them for
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: Kembell Tompkins. And when I'm drafted free agent.
- 1:57:26Speaker 6: Like Evan can go out to the Shrine Bowl and
- 1:57:29Speaker 6: see to Mario Douglas and say this guy's can move,
- 1:57:31Speaker 6: he's you know, I can turn on Jalen Polk after
- 1:57:34Speaker 6: not watching cold football and I'm saying, I like this kid.
- 1:57:36Speaker 6: I think he can you know, I think he has
- 1:57:38Speaker 6: something to offer. But it's that like finding that gem
- 1:57:41Speaker 6: elite player that's going to truly.
- 1:57:42Speaker 5: Identifying the guy like the kid from Arizona the other
- 1:57:45Speaker 5: day and saying he can do that in the NFL. Yeah,
- 1:57:48Speaker 5: and that's hard.
- 1:57:50Speaker 3: Spiing Fresno, speaking of picking on no socks.
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: He has a habit of sharply responding correct when someone
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: has expressed an opinion he agrees with. If it an opinion,
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: it's not necessarily correct. The implication is, yes, lucky you,
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: I approve of your opinion.
- 1:58:06Speaker 5: Man, this last this last portion of the show is
- 1:58:08Speaker 5: not going to sit well.
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: Then, I just feel like change. We all know him
- 1:58:13Speaker 4: so well, so all these things that they're pointing out
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: is like, well, that's just Matt and they don't you
- 1:58:18Speaker 4: don't know him yet, so you'll.
- 1:58:19Speaker 5: You'll realize exactly what ever is saying. Mad has a
- 1:58:23Speaker 5: lot of quirky idiosyncrasies. You know, he's a character.
- 1:58:28Speaker 6: You'll get to know him.
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: You're gonna get to know him all season because he's
- 1:58:31Speaker 2: going to be hosting the pre and post game show
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: for the rest of the season.
- 1:58:35Speaker 4: Except for that one game that's my favorite.
