- 0:02Speaker 1: Opposition Territory that was recorded on Wednesday, October sixteenth, twenty
- 0:07Speaker 1: twenty four. By the time you hear this, some things
- 0:09Speaker 1: may have changed here or there, but we hope you
- 0:11Speaker 1: enjoy the show. Welcome to Opposition Territory here at the
- 0:30Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:33Speaker 1: sports podcast show in the world, that's right over eleven
- 0:36Speaker 1: and a half years strong. We've got a great discussion
- 0:38Speaker 1: coming your way here on Opposition Territory. But we're gonna
- 0:41Speaker 1: be getting into this week's matchup Philadelphia Eagles against the
- 0:45Speaker 1: New York Giants. What's this New York Giants team going
- 0:48Speaker 1: to look like? Two and four on the season at
- 0:51Speaker 1: this point, there's a lot of issues going on with
- 0:54Speaker 1: this Giants team on offense. The defense however, looking pretty good.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We're gonna be getting into it during our discussion and
- 1:01Speaker 1: preview show. Here. We got a great guess. He's a
- 1:04Speaker 1: first time guest. Let's get right to it. Joining us
- 1:07Speaker 1: from Big Blue View. Love the content that they always
- 1:10Speaker 1: put up an SB Nation. You know, we love our
- 1:12Speaker 1: sp Nation sites, and like I said in the intro,
- 1:14Speaker 1: He is new to the PST podcast show. You can
- 1:17Speaker 1: find him on the Twitter slash x at raptor MkII great,
- 1:22Speaker 1: great follow We've got Chris Flum.
- 1:24Speaker 2: How you doing, buddy, I am doing well.
- 1:27Speaker 1: How you doing?
- 1:28Speaker 2: And thanks for having me on.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's great. It's great to have you on for
- 1:31Speaker 1: the first time here. Look, I it's such an interesting
- 1:34Speaker 1: NFL season. It's a very interesting NFC East at this point,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and I mean to get into this upcoming matchup Eagles
- 1:43Speaker 1: and Giants. Look, at this point the season, the Giants
- 1:46Speaker 1: are two and four, They're fourth in the NFC division.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I mean in terms of passing and rushing. You know,
- 1:51Speaker 1: they've been they've been a middle of the road type
- 1:54Speaker 1: of team. Yes, bottom of the division, but still I
- 1:57Speaker 1: still think this division is wide open. You know, we're
- 1:59Speaker 1: heading into week seven here, anything I think can happen,
- 2:02Speaker 1: especially in the NFC, you know, where we really don't
- 2:05Speaker 1: have too too many dominant teams. So in terms of
- 2:09Speaker 1: the Giants defense, though, we are seeing some really really
- 2:13Speaker 1: good stuff from them. So I'm wondering, you know, to
- 2:15Speaker 1: give our listeners here at Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show
- 2:18Speaker 1: a little bit and more insight into the Giants. How
- 2:21Speaker 1: would you sum up what you have seen from this
- 2:24Speaker 1: team so far this season after six weeks.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say that after six weeks. The Giants
- 2:30Speaker 2: are a tough, gritty team. You know, that's kind of
- 2:34Speaker 2: been their hallmark under Brian Davil, Like they generally don't
- 2:39Speaker 2: do too much to hurt themselves. They don't do too
- 2:42Speaker 2: much that's particularly exciting. You know, they're not gonna be
- 2:45Speaker 2: out there slinging the ball around the yard, generating big plays,
- 2:49Speaker 2: you know, putting up video game numbers right far from that,
- 2:53Speaker 2: but they are not going to not going to shoot themselves.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They're going to hang around and compete all game long.
- 3:03Speaker 2: You know, we saw that last week. You know, when
- 3:06Speaker 2: all of a sudden, you other punter goes down, their
- 3:09Speaker 2: kicker has been down, gram Geno's on the injured reserve,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and so Brian Dable just has them go for fourth
- 3:16Speaker 2: down after fourth down after fourth down. And it didn't
- 3:21Speaker 2: work the first time, and it didn't work the last time,
- 3:23Speaker 2: but in between, it kept the offense on the field
- 3:25Speaker 2: and it kept the players engaged. Yeah, which is that
- 3:29Speaker 2: has been really huge for him because the Giant every
- 3:32Speaker 2: team has adversity. Every team has setbacks. Every team has
- 3:36Speaker 2: problems they have to overcome, absolutely, and they this team
- 3:40Speaker 2: has just kept fighting. They haven't done a whole lot
- 3:43Speaker 2: of winning, but they've kept fighting.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And I think that is a testament to probably where
- 3:50Speaker 1: the coaching staff is at this point. You mentioned Brian Dable,
- 3:53Speaker 1: but you know, the fact that you know they are
- 3:55Speaker 1: still in the mix, and the fact that they're not
- 3:58Speaker 1: one of these downtrodden teams like the Carolina Panthers. You know,
- 4:02Speaker 1: they're not like the Cleveland Browns, who the Eagles played
- 4:05Speaker 1: last week and by the way, just barely got by
- 4:08Speaker 1: the Cleveland Browns. I mean, we certainly can get into
- 4:10Speaker 1: that in a little bit as well, but I do
- 4:13Speaker 1: want to get into the quarterback play. You know, we've
- 4:16Speaker 1: seen some really great quarterback play from Jalen Hurts this year.
- 4:20Speaker 1: We've seen some terrible quarterback play from Jalen Hurts as well.
- 4:23Speaker 1: He did not turn the ball over last week for
- 4:25Speaker 1: the first time in what seems to be like fifty years,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and that was really nice to see. But with regard
- 4:31Speaker 1: to Daniel Jones and the kind of play that we
- 4:34Speaker 1: have seen from him under center, this year, look, his
- 4:37Speaker 1: completion percentage is at sixty two point one percent. He's
- 4:40Speaker 1: thrown six touchdowns four interceptions. He also has a tremendous
- 4:45Speaker 1: receiver in Malik Neighbors, who's so many of US football fans,
- 4:49Speaker 1: football fans in general. You love what Malik Neighbors has
- 4:52Speaker 1: been able to do thus far this season. Yes, he
- 4:55Speaker 1: was injured this past week because of a concussion, but
- 4:59Speaker 1: you know, coming back from that injury. I'm talking about
- 5:03Speaker 1: Daniel Jones's injury this season. I'm wondering, have you seen
- 5:06Speaker 1: regression with him? Maybe it's stagnation. You know, I do
- 5:10Speaker 1: read Big Blue View, and I do read some other
- 5:12Speaker 1: Giant sites as well, quite frankly, and the fan base
- 5:16Speaker 1: not too too happy when it comes to Daniel Jones
- 5:19Speaker 1: and his productivity or maybe lack of productivity on the
- 5:21Speaker 1: field this year. Clearly doesn't seem to be that quarterback
- 5:25Speaker 1: of twenty twenty two that I think Giants Nation was
- 5:27Speaker 1: hoping for. What are your thoughts here, Chris on how
- 5:31Speaker 1: his level of play has been after six weeks?
- 5:34Speaker 2: Oh man, that is a loaded question. Basically, anything involving
- 5:38Speaker 2: Daniel Jones is a loaded question because it kind of
- 5:43Speaker 2: boggles the mind how somebody so personally vanilla. Yeah, can
- 5:48Speaker 2: be so incredibly polarizing.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But a great way to describe it, really.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, going back a few years, like back to
- 5:57Speaker 2: his sophomore year, back in twenty twenty, at the end
- 5:59Speaker 2: of the year at Valentine, our editor he asked me
- 6:03Speaker 2: on his podcast what I thought of Daniel Jones, what
- 6:06Speaker 2: my assessment of him was after two seasons, and I said,
- 6:11Speaker 2: he is a human Ruarshack test. Yeah. You can kind
- 6:15Speaker 2: of see whatever you want to see in his play.
- 6:21Speaker 2: He has the ability to throw a very, very pretty
- 6:25Speaker 2: deep ball. He has the ability to be efficient in
- 6:31Speaker 2: completing short, quick game passes. But then there are also
- 6:35Speaker 2: those valleys in his play where you know, his rookie season,
- 6:39Speaker 2: it was the fumbles. His sophomore season, it was just
- 6:42Speaker 2: boneheaded interceptions where he just did not see a defender deep. Yeah,
- 6:49Speaker 2: this year, the thing that I think has a lot
- 6:51Speaker 2: of people concerned is just his utter recklessness running the ball,
- 6:55Speaker 2: where he runs like a full back, right, an athletic fallback,
- 6:59Speaker 2: but allack And yeah, Like, if you want to like
- 7:06Speaker 2: Daniel Jones, you can pick out things to like about
- 7:09Speaker 2: his game. You know, how he is scrambling to extend, extend,
- 7:14Speaker 2: extend plays and extend drives. Uh, finding Molik Neighbors when
- 7:19Speaker 2: he is healthy. Uh, finding Wandeale Robinson, somebody else we
- 7:22Speaker 2: can probably talk about a little bit later. Uh Darius Slayton.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Those things. However, the Giants offense with him is stagnant
- 7:32Speaker 2: is kind of the right word for it, because to
- 7:36Speaker 2: it has it might be the most conservative offense in
- 7:39Speaker 2: the NFL. Yeah, at halftime against the Brown or sorry,
- 7:43Speaker 2: halftime against the Seahawks, Uh, Jones intended air yardage was
- 7:50Speaker 2: I think about two yards downfield, you know this past
- 7:55Speaker 2: game his are or is something like one point nine
- 8:00Speaker 2: yards down the field. They just do not throw down
- 8:03Speaker 2: the field all that often with Jones, and part of
- 8:08Speaker 2: that might be coming back from the ACL Part of
- 8:11Speaker 2: that might be trying to rein in and control those
- 8:16Speaker 2: interceptible plays, because, like I said, this Giants team doesn't
- 8:21Speaker 2: really hurt itself. They their whole team philosophy is just
- 8:26Speaker 2: hang around and let the other team make all of
- 8:29Speaker 2: the mistakes. But the problem with that is, and this
- 8:32Speaker 2: is kind of the big downside with Jones and why
- 8:35Speaker 2: I think so many Giants fans are kind of over
- 8:38Speaker 2: him at this point, is that it puts your margin
- 8:42Speaker 2: of error on offense, you know, incredibly slim, right right, Yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 2: you basically cannot make a mistake because if you do,
- 8:51Speaker 2: you just do not have the horsepower to overcome that
- 8:55Speaker 2: that mistake. You know, if you if this team falls
- 8:57Speaker 2: behind by ten points, you know, a ball control offense
- 9:02Speaker 2: is not going to get it done. But with the
- 9:04Speaker 2: defense playing the way they have been and the offense
- 9:07Speaker 2: being again competitive, focused on controlling the ball, controlling the clock, yeah,
- 9:17Speaker 2: it has worked enough that the Giants are in games
- 9:22Speaker 2: to the end. Right, Just as a quarterback, I don't
- 9:28Speaker 2: know that Jones really has changed all that much from
- 9:32Speaker 2: the twenty twenty two season. You know that year the
- 9:35Speaker 2: Giants had the ball bounce their way a lot. Yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 2: I can be objective enough to say that they know
- 9:42Speaker 2: from Week one with Randy Bullock missing of was forty
- 9:45Speaker 2: five to forty seven yard field goal for the win. Yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 2: you know, that just kind of set the tone for
- 9:51Speaker 2: that season and just over the last we'll say two
- 9:56Speaker 2: and a half seasons. Because you know, Jones missed time
- 9:58Speaker 2: with the ACL, he had a second neck injury, that
- 10:01Speaker 2: sort of thing. A lot of the NFL has just
- 10:06Speaker 2: picked up on his tendencies and the Giants offensive tendencies
- 10:10Speaker 2: with him at quarterbacks, so that the book is kind
- 10:12Speaker 2: of just out and if you can defend that style
- 10:16Speaker 2: of offense, you can defend the Giants.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And I'm wondering if the Eagles defense is going to
- 10:21Speaker 1: be able to do that this week. And it kind
- 10:23Speaker 1: of leads to the next topic I wanted to get
- 10:25Speaker 1: into with you, Chris, is this Giants offensive line because look,
- 10:30Speaker 1: coming into Week six the Philadelphia Eagles, they only had
- 10:33Speaker 1: six sacks on the season, just not getting the pass rush,
- 10:39Speaker 1: not getting to the quarterback hardly at all within the
- 10:42Speaker 1: first you know, the first five weeks of the season.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Last week, yes, the Eagles did end up having five sacks.
- 10:49Speaker 1: They're now up to eleven this year. But you know,
- 10:51Speaker 1: I wonder how this Giants offensive line now is going
- 10:54Speaker 1: to be holding up. Because if you don't have a steady,
- 10:57Speaker 1: an even solid offensive line in the NFL, you're really
- 11:00Speaker 1: not going to be able to do too much on offense.
- 11:02Speaker 1: It's a theme that we have been talking about here
- 11:03Speaker 1: for the eleven and a half years we've been doing
- 11:05Speaker 1: this podcast, and now with Andrew Thomas not being able
- 11:08Speaker 1: to play this week at this point. I mean, I
- 11:12Speaker 1: wonder if I wonder if this offensive line for the
- 11:15Speaker 1: Giants may potentially be taking some steps back, and if
- 11:18Speaker 1: there is a concern with the Eagles defense, even though
- 11:22Speaker 1: the Eagles defense really hasn't shown that much in terms
- 11:25Speaker 1: of the pass rush. I don't know what are your
- 11:27Speaker 1: thoughts here about where the Giants offensive line is that
- 11:29Speaker 1: now with Andrew Thomas being out.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Yeah, there is kind of there's a ton of concern.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I think people are flashing back to last year when
- 11:37Speaker 2: Thomas missed seven games with a hamstring injury. Yeah. For
- 11:43Speaker 2: anyone who doesn't know, I assume most people do. Thomas
- 11:47Speaker 2: has been diagnosed with a list frank injury. He suffered
- 11:50Speaker 2: it in the third quarter.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Yeah, last week.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Against the Bengals and somehow play You played a quarter
- 11:56Speaker 2: and a half against Trey hendrickson on one leg. That's phenomenal.
- 12:00Speaker 1: It's pretty incredible.
- 12:01Speaker 2: It is. Yeah, it not in a good way, but
- 12:05Speaker 2: it is still right. It's amazing. So it's now looking
- 12:09Speaker 2: like his season is over, So the Giants are going
- 12:14Speaker 2: to have to figure something out the It seems like
- 12:18Speaker 2: the next man up will be Joshua Zodu. He is
- 12:23Speaker 2: kind of their utility backup offensive lineman. I know he's
- 12:27Speaker 2: a four tool offensive lineman. He may even have cross
- 12:30Speaker 2: streamed to play center. I'm not sure on that, but
- 12:33Speaker 2: he was a former third round pick. He's personally I
- 12:37Speaker 2: think he's best at guard. The Giants tried him at
- 12:40Speaker 2: left tackle just right off the bench last year. It
- 12:43Speaker 2: did not work well. It didn't work well at all,
- 12:47Speaker 2: and so I think that is the source of a
- 12:49Speaker 2: lot of heartburn among Giants fans. You know, they do
- 12:52Speaker 2: have another option in moving current right tackle Jermaine and
- 12:57Speaker 2: Luminor over to left tackle and then move being former
- 13:02Speaker 2: these fifth six, the overall pick Evan Neil off the
- 13:06Speaker 2: bench and into right tackle. Uh. He hasn't played, he's
- 13:12Speaker 2: he has had a lot of problems throughout his young career.
- 13:14Speaker 2: We don't really need to get into that right right,
- 13:18Speaker 2: But yeah, I would say not having Andrew Thomas, he
- 13:21Speaker 2: is the leader of the offensive line. He is the
- 13:24Speaker 2: rock on that offensive line. You know John Runyon Jr.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Left guard, Jermaine Michael Uh John Michael Schmidt. Sorry yeah,
- 13:33Speaker 2: uh center Uh. Greg Van wrote in the right guard,
- 13:38Speaker 2: Jermaine and Luminor right tackle. Those guys have all been
- 13:41Speaker 2: relatively solid. You know, they've gotten worked in the past,
- 13:45Speaker 2: particularly the interior line in which Jalen Carter scares me
- 13:49Speaker 2: there but not or but rather, having Andrew Thomas allows
- 13:55Speaker 2: the Giants to really play with their double teams. Yeah,
- 13:58Speaker 2: they can double the three technique, or they can go
- 14:02Speaker 2: out and double the other edge rusher, or you know,
- 14:06Speaker 2: whatever the situation needs, because they have Andrew Thomas who
- 14:10Speaker 2: can handle pretty much anyone all by his loans. Right,
- 14:14Speaker 2: the having a backup left tackle and a backup left
- 14:20Speaker 2: tackle who doesn't really have all the traits you want
- 14:23Speaker 2: to see in an offensive tackle, that is a big
- 14:26Speaker 2: concern and it's going to have a domino effect throughout
- 14:29Speaker 2: the offense. Now, I would expect the Giants to lean
- 14:32Speaker 2: even more into the quick passing game. They'll probably lean
- 14:36Speaker 2: into the screen game because that has been very effective
- 14:39Speaker 2: for them over the last couple of weeks. Again with
- 14:42Speaker 2: a couple of other guys we can talk about in
- 14:43Speaker 2: a little bit. And then yeah, but then that opens up.
- 14:47Speaker 2: You know, what do you do about Jalen Carter? What
- 14:50Speaker 2: do you do about whoever the Eagles left defensive end
- 14:54Speaker 2: is going to be on that particular player left edge, Right, Yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 2: that I am not sure how it is going to
- 15:04Speaker 2: all pan out. The other eighty percent of the offensive
- 15:07Speaker 2: line is definitely better than it was a year ago.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Right it is, but yeah, it's.
- 15:13Speaker 2: It is not an ideal situation, which again, I you know,
- 15:17Speaker 2: Jordan Mylotta down with a hamstring injury of his own. Yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 2: it's very tough to find six really good offensive linemen
- 15:24Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 15:25Speaker 1: It absolutely is. Yeah, No, it absolutely is. And I
- 15:28Speaker 1: think that this could be an opportunity for the Eagles.
- 15:31Speaker 1: We're gonna have to wait and see if they actually
- 15:33Speaker 1: are able to capitalize on this and if they had
- 15:36Speaker 1: Giants then in the same turn, are gonna be able
- 15:38Speaker 1: to capitalize? Like you mentioned, Jordan Mylotta out with a
- 15:41Speaker 1: hamstring injury? Are they gonna are? Is the Giants defense
- 15:44Speaker 1: gonna be able to capitalize? And gonna get to the
- 15:46Speaker 1: Giants defense in just a second. Again, folks, we're talking
- 15:49Speaker 1: to Chris Flumm from Big Blue View. Check out everything
- 15:53Speaker 1: they're doing over there Big Blue view dot com and
- 15:57Speaker 1: follow Chris on the Twitter slash x raptor MKI great.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Great follow, And again, let's move on to the defense here,
- 16:05Speaker 1: because this Giants defense quite Frank In my opinion, they
- 16:10Speaker 1: have been surprising this year. They haven't allowed more than
- 16:12Speaker 1: twenty one points in their last five games. They lead
- 16:16Speaker 1: the NFL with twenty six sacks. Dexter Lawrence already has
- 16:19Speaker 1: seven this season. Brian Burns was on fire this past
- 16:23Speaker 1: week against the Bengals, and I'm absolutely petrified of what
- 16:27Speaker 1: he may do in terms of going up against our
- 16:31Speaker 1: backup left tackle for the Eagles. The momentum that this
- 16:37Speaker 1: Giants defense has heading into Week seven, I think for
- 16:41Speaker 1: opposing teams is definitely concerning for those teams. So what
- 16:45Speaker 1: are some of the overall defensive themes that we really
- 16:47Speaker 1: need to be on the lookout for this coming week
- 16:50Speaker 1: against the Eagles.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think just from an x's no standpoint, the
- 16:55Speaker 2: Giants are gonna play a lot of at least what
- 16:58Speaker 2: looks like Cover four. Yeah, the outset of the game,
- 17:00Speaker 2: which you know, Eagles fans, with Vic Fangio back there
- 17:06Speaker 2: calling that defense, that's something you should probably already be
- 17:08Speaker 2: pretty familiar with.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yeah, there's gonna be the two deep safeties trying to
- 17:12Speaker 2: take away the deep shots if they The Giants do
- 17:17Speaker 2: like to play a fair amount of pattern matching rules
- 17:19Speaker 2: underneath that, so they're cornerback slots. Those guys that whether
- 17:27Speaker 2: they're playing man or zone will really depend on what
- 17:30Speaker 2: their opponents do, and that can make it pretty tough
- 17:34Speaker 2: for opposing quarterbacks to get through their reads quickly. You know,
- 17:39Speaker 2: that's something we saw last week with Joe Burrow, where
- 17:42Speaker 2: it seemed like every drive he was, you know, double clutching,
- 17:46Speaker 2: patting the ball a couple times, just trying to figure
- 17:50Speaker 2: out where his open receiver was, and then that really
- 17:54Speaker 2: gave the time for the defensive line to do its thing.
- 17:57Speaker 2: The Giants use a lot of stunts and twists. They
- 18:01Speaker 2: at times will use some defensive lineman almost like bull backs,
- 18:05Speaker 2: to just take out a blocker and create that free
- 18:08Speaker 2: run into the backfield. Dexter Lawrence tends to benefit from
- 18:13Speaker 2: that a lot, in addition to just being a load
- 18:15Speaker 2: in and of himself. Yes, Now, the two things that
- 18:21Speaker 2: I noticed last week against the Bengals that I think
- 18:25Speaker 2: might carry forward into this week was how the Giants
- 18:28Speaker 2: deployed their corners and then their edge defenders against the
- 18:34Speaker 2: Bengals receivers and offensive tackles respectively. You know, the Bengals
- 18:39Speaker 2: have Orlando Brown, who is one of the best left
- 18:42Speaker 2: tackles in the NFL right now, the Giants made a
- 18:47Speaker 2: point of putting Brandon Burns against him and then use
- 18:51Speaker 2: Azizo Jalari their number three edge defender, with Kevon Thibodeau
- 18:55Speaker 2: on the ir having risked surgery surprise last week. Yeah,
- 19:01Speaker 2: so what they did was they basically use Burns to
- 19:04Speaker 2: occupy Orlando Brown and then unleashed Ojelari against the rookie
- 19:10Speaker 2: Amarius Mims. So I actually wouldn't be surprised to see
- 19:13Speaker 2: Brandon Burns on the right side against Lane Johnson and
- 19:17Speaker 2: then Ojelari on the backup left tackle, just as kind
- 19:22Speaker 2: of a way to allocate resources and say, if you're
- 19:24Speaker 2: gonna take one of our defenders out of the game,
- 19:29Speaker 2: it's gonna be the one who has the best chance
- 19:32Speaker 2: of not being taken out of the game. If that
- 19:34Speaker 2: makes any sense.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, oh, absolutely absolutely it does. I you know,
- 19:38Speaker 1: I think that there is definitely a chance. Well, what's
- 19:42Speaker 1: interesting with regard to Lane Johnson, what you're saying too
- 19:44Speaker 1: is like coming back from his concussions, he actually did
- 19:48Speaker 1: not allow any pressures last week against quarnerback, which was
- 19:51Speaker 1: very interesting. So that matchup that you're talking about there
- 19:54Speaker 1: that could be really really interesting this week to watch. Boy,
- 19:58Speaker 1: what a battle that would. But as we're moving along
- 20:01Speaker 1: with the conversation here, Chris, you know, when we look
- 20:04Speaker 1: at the matchups coming into this week, I'm wondering where
- 20:08Speaker 1: you may have a concern in terms of the Giants.
- 20:11Speaker 1: So let's talk concerns on offense and defense here. What
- 20:15Speaker 1: is your biggest concern with any of the Giants offensive
- 20:18Speaker 1: matchups against this Eagles defense and Eagles defense that really
- 20:22Speaker 1: has been up and down. What are your thoughts here?
- 20:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean first concern, I think first biggest that
- 20:27Speaker 2: has to be the offensive line. You know, the I
- 20:31Speaker 2: would have said if Andrew Thomas was healthy, then Jalen
- 20:36Speaker 2: Carter against Greg Van Roten and John Michael SCHMIDTZ. Yeah,
- 20:39Speaker 2: Giants right guard center duo has been kind of the
- 20:46Speaker 2: the weakest point along this offensive line. And I've got
- 20:49Speaker 2: a ton of respect for Jalen Carter. Yeah, I honestly
- 20:53Speaker 2: don't know how the NFL let him last in the
- 20:57Speaker 2: draft as long as he did. Yeah, It's kind of
- 21:02Speaker 2: thing we see every year with the with the Ravens.
- 21:05Speaker 2: It's just weird. Yes, But obviously with Andrew Thomas Out.
- 21:09Speaker 2: We talked about that. You know, Nolan Smith, the speed
- 21:12Speaker 2: he has off of that off of the edge. That
- 21:16Speaker 2: definitely concerns me. With Joshua Zodo because he's got good
- 21:20Speaker 2: feet for a guard, but not great feet for a
- 21:24Speaker 2: tackle right then down the field. You know, I'm I
- 21:29Speaker 2: don't know if Malik Neighbors will play. He's he just
- 21:33Speaker 2: practiced today in a limited capacity, non contact running routes
- 21:37Speaker 2: against air. Uh. He had a very significant concussion. It
- 21:42Speaker 2: actually happened back in back against the Cowboys back on
- 21:46Speaker 2: Thursday Night Football a couple of weeks ago. So he's
- 21:48Speaker 2: missed two games with that concussion. So that I am
- 21:54Speaker 2: just concerned about whether or not he is going to play.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Uh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah him, Yeah, go ahead.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 22:03Speaker 2: The Giants receivers are actually pretty underrated, but just there
- 22:08Speaker 2: is a tendency when the team is under pressure, you know,
- 22:12Speaker 2: you have to pick up this third down. They do
- 22:16Speaker 2: kind of have a tendency to drop the ball, and
- 22:20Speaker 2: Daniel Jones doesn't always make it easy on them. He
- 22:23Speaker 2: can be prone to throwing it low or behind them.
- 22:26Speaker 2: But in those gotta have it situations, the ball does
- 22:31Speaker 2: tend to bobble bounce and hit the ground too often,
- 22:35Speaker 2: So that I think is the other concern. I would
- 22:38Speaker 2: have just like those opportunities to either not convert or
- 22:42Speaker 2: for the ball to be going back the other way, right, Well, I.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Mean on the on the flip side of that coin
- 22:47Speaker 1: then too. What is your biggest concern with any of
- 22:50Speaker 1: the Giants defensive matchups against an Eagles offense? An Eagles
- 22:54Speaker 1: offense that was supposed to be a little bit more
- 22:56Speaker 1: high powered. And yes, they did lose Aj Brown for
- 22:59Speaker 1: more than a few weeks, Demante Smith was out for
- 23:02Speaker 1: a week. Both were back this past week, made an
- 23:05Speaker 1: impact on the field. But you know what, what is
- 23:08Speaker 1: that biggest concern of yours with the Giants defensive matchups
- 23:11Speaker 1: against the Seagles offense.
- 23:13Speaker 2: No, the one on one or one on two matchup
- 23:17Speaker 2: would be for me Aj Brown if he gets matched
- 23:20Speaker 2: up against Cordale Flott, who has been kind of in
- 23:23Speaker 2: nickel packages or in most packages, the Giants number two
- 23:28Speaker 2: cornerback across from Deontay Banks. Banks has been giving up receptions,
- 23:34Speaker 2: but he at least has the size and speed to
- 23:37Speaker 2: match up with Aj Brown, who is that I don't
- 23:40Speaker 2: know what they were putting in the water down in Ole,
- 23:42Speaker 2: Miss when he and bet Kaefer down there. But those
- 23:44Speaker 2: dudes are tanks. They are, yes yet, but Cordiale Flat
- 23:49Speaker 2: is not. He is like he is a long corner.
- 23:53Speaker 2: He's like six one six two, he's got long arms,
- 23:55Speaker 2: but he's also about one hundred and seventy five pounds maybe,
- 24:00Speaker 2: So like that is a pretty big, just size speed mismatch. Now,
- 24:07Speaker 2: last week, Flot and one of the safeties. It changed
- 24:11Speaker 2: based on the play. We're on Jamar Chase all the time,
- 24:15Speaker 2: and the Giants were able to keep Jamar Chase and
- 24:17Speaker 2: t Higgins to about seventy yards apiece, which is pretty
- 24:22Speaker 2: good work, not that bad. Yeah, no, so like I
- 24:27Speaker 2: suspect the Giants will try that again. But just if
- 24:30Speaker 2: it gets down to being physical and just that fight
- 24:34Speaker 2: at the catch point, a matchup between Flott and aj
- 24:38Speaker 2: Brown would worry me. And then I'm I also can't
- 24:41Speaker 2: help you concerned about Jahan Dobson. I loved him coming
- 24:43Speaker 2: out of Penn State. Yeah, I thought he had if
- 24:46Speaker 2: not wide receiver one upside, then very very good wide
- 24:50Speaker 2: receiver two upside. And I'm not sure who he gets
- 24:53Speaker 2: matched up on in this game. It would probably be
- 24:56Speaker 2: the rookie Drew Phillips, who is again another guy where
- 25:00Speaker 2: just looking at our plan for this podcast. We'll talk
- 25:03Speaker 2: about in a little bit. But Drew Phillips has been
- 25:06Speaker 2: very impressive as a rookie. But Johan Dotson is or
- 25:09Speaker 2: at least as I remember him, to be an excellent
- 25:12Speaker 2: route runner, and those guys always have an advantage exactly.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I wish the Eagles would utilize him a little bit more,
- 25:18Speaker 1: quite frankly.
- 25:19Speaker 2: But as we next week, next week, next week.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Exactly as we end our discussion here, Chris, we want
- 25:26Speaker 1: to get into some sneaky players for US Eagles fans
- 25:29Speaker 1: to you know, kind of keep our eyes on with
- 25:31Speaker 1: this New York Giants team. Who is your sneaky player
- 25:34Speaker 1: for us to look out for on the Giants offense
- 25:37Speaker 1: this week?
- 25:38Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna give you a tow of fern. I'll
- 25:39Speaker 2: try to keep it short, okay, because neither of these
- 25:42Speaker 2: guys are exactly sneaky. The first one rookie running back
- 25:47Speaker 2: Tyrone Tracy. Okay, I expect a lot of people have
- 25:52Speaker 2: heard his name. Over the last two weeks. Evin Singletary
- 25:54Speaker 2: has been hurt. He's had a I believe it was
- 25:56Speaker 2: a groin injury. Off the top of my head. Tracy
- 26:00Speaker 2: came out and dropped in his very first start, his
- 26:03Speaker 2: first extended action as an NFL player, he led the
- 26:06Speaker 2: league in rushing. He had one hundred and twenty nine
- 26:08Speaker 2: yards against the Seahawks. Last week he came out, he
- 26:11Speaker 2: only had fifty years so yards rushing, but he also
- 26:14Speaker 2: had fifty yards receiving. He's a former receiver turned running back.
- 26:18Speaker 2: He's got great vision, great contact balance, great short area
- 26:21Speaker 2: of quickness. I run our draft content at Big Blue View,
- 26:28Speaker 2: and he was the one guy when the Giants drafted him.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I swore under my breath because every year it works
- 26:36Speaker 2: out that there's at least one player that I just
- 26:38Speaker 2: did not have the time to scout and do a
- 26:41Speaker 2: proper profile on. Yeah. A couple of years ago it
- 26:44Speaker 2: was Pukainakua. This year it was Tyrone Tracy, right, yeah,
- 26:48Speaker 2: And like I think, with some extended run, he has
- 26:52Speaker 2: that that upside to be that guy that comes out
- 26:54Speaker 2: of nowhere that everybody's talking about and just winds up
- 26:59Speaker 2: on everybody's fantasy team next year.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Right yep.
- 27:03Speaker 2: The other one is Wandale Robinson, the Giants wide receiver
- 27:07Speaker 2: two okay, through most of the through most of the season.
- 27:10Speaker 2: In fact, his volume has rivaled a lot of wide
- 27:13Speaker 2: receiver ones. He was a running back turned wide receiver.
- 27:19Speaker 2: He's undersized, he is incredibly shifty, very very quick, feat
- 27:25Speaker 2: and the Giants love to throw to him short and
- 27:28Speaker 2: then just trust him to make the first guy, the
- 27:30Speaker 2: first two guys miss and turn a three to five
- 27:33Speaker 2: yard catch into a seven to ten yard reception and
- 27:38Speaker 2: just keep the offense on schedule and on the field.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I think those are the two guys the Eagles defense
- 27:44Speaker 2: has to really watch out.
- 27:45Speaker 1: For, all right. Well, on the flip side of that coin, too,
- 27:48Speaker 1: your sneaky player for us to look out for on
- 27:50Speaker 1: the Giants' defense this week? Who do you think that's
- 27:53Speaker 1: going to be?
- 27:54Speaker 2: All right? I'll start with the obvious one that I
- 27:56Speaker 2: actually just mentioned. That's Drew Phillips. Yeah, slot corner, Nick
- 28:00Speaker 2: Saban said during the draft. I think he might have
- 28:02Speaker 2: also mentioned it during the scout and combine. He was
- 28:06Speaker 2: his Saban's favorite cornerback in this year's draft class. He
- 28:10Speaker 2: isn't long, he isn't particularly athletic, but he is just
- 28:18Speaker 2: he is just a disruptor. He disrupts in the run game,
- 28:21Speaker 2: he disrupts in the passing game. He is incredibly physical.
- 28:24Speaker 2: He kind of reminds me of Tyron Matthew back in
- 28:28Speaker 2: the day as a guy who doesn't exactly fit the
- 28:32Speaker 2: cornerback archetype physically and athletically, but is just he is
- 28:38Speaker 2: just good at football.
- 28:39Speaker 1: It's an interesting comp Yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. He plays cornerback like a safety. Is the
- 28:45Speaker 2: best way I can describe his game. And then the
- 28:47Speaker 2: other guy is Elijah Chapman, who was a UDFA defensive
- 28:54Speaker 2: tackle this year. Yeah, a lot of rookies. The Giants'
- 28:57Speaker 2: rookie class is playing very, very well for them. It's
- 29:00Speaker 2: it's like one of the few real bright spots this year. Right,
- 29:03Speaker 2: Chatman was a UDFA rookie Minni Camp sinee and he
- 29:09Speaker 2: is now a starter for the Giants. He is undersized,
- 29:13Speaker 2: He's about Aaron Donald sized, and he's about Aaron Donald
- 29:17Speaker 2: levels of athletic. He made highlight reels during the preseason
- 29:22Speaker 2: when he ran a play down from behind from like
- 29:25Speaker 2: sixty yards away. He's got a ton of hustle. He's
- 29:28Speaker 2: very fast and he's very explosive. The Giants like to
- 29:31Speaker 2: use him as a penetrator, and at times he's one
- 29:34Speaker 2: of those kind of defensive line fallbacks where he just
- 29:37Speaker 2: explodes off the ball, takes a guard out of the
- 29:40Speaker 2: play and creates havoc in the backfield and opportunities for
- 29:45Speaker 2: the other guys to get that cleanup sack, which is
- 29:47Speaker 2: how a lot of the Giant sacks have come, just
- 29:50Speaker 2: cleaning up when the play breaks down for the offense.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Well, they definitely got a lot of sacks on the season.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Twenty six That is wow. Nothing to you know, it's
- 30:02Speaker 1: nothing to put your nose up in the air about,
- 30:05Speaker 1: for sure, But.
- 30:07Speaker 2: There have been years when the Giants haven't gotten twenty
- 30:09Speaker 2: six on the season exactly exactly.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I've been following the Giants for quite some time, my friend,
- 30:14Speaker 1: and I gotta tell you this matchup I think is
- 30:16Speaker 1: gonna be a good one. Quite frankly, I think we're
- 30:18Speaker 1: gonna see an interesting game this Sunday. And again, folks.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Chris Flumm from Big Blue View dot com. Chris, it
