- 0:05Thousands joined protest outside Kennedy Center expressing concern that Trump might tear
- 0:10it down. This article is being read by an automated
- 0:16voices generated by Everlet. Washington, the AP, thousands of people
- 0:22joined outside the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Friday
- 0:26evening to protest President Donald Trump's plans for the facility, lending their
- 0:30voices to a chorus of organizations and individuals who have been horrified
- 0:34that he might make good on his threat to close and tear
- 0:37down the storied institution. The crowd streamed in from the nearest subway
- 0:42stop, crowding streets in the foggy bottom area of Washington, and locking
- 0:46down traffic as the walked, many carrying signs, as they joined in
- 0:50hands around the Kennedy Center. At one point some held hands and
- 0:54formed a human chain around the center. Chris Raleigh, co founder of
- 0:58Hands Off the Arts, which set up the gathering, said in an
- 1:02interview that he hoped the event would show that people are willing
- 1:05to fight to keep Trump's plans for the building at bay. One
- 1:09of the most iconic buildings on the Potomac River waterfront, The
- 1:12Kennedy Center has been a focus of Trump's remake of Washington since
- 1:16twenty twenty five, when he began installing favorites onto its governing board.
- 1:21Late last year he had his name placed On the center. A
- 1:24judge ruled that Trump's name was illegally added and ordered it removed.
- 1:29The Kennedy Center Board, which is aligned with the President, voted Tuesday
- 1:33to close the center indefinitely for repairs hours after U.S. District Judge
- 1:37Christopher Cooper blocked their plans to return Trump's name to the building.
- 1:42On Thursday, the judge ordered the
- 1:44Kennedy Center to provide thirty days notice before making any major physical
- 1:48changes to the building, including demolishing it. Raleigh said he, like others,
- 1:54is concerned that’s Trump could take the step without notifying the court.
- 1:57Look at the East Wing, he said. We got up one morning,
- 2:00and there was a giant hole there. Raleigh said the Kennedy Center
- 2:04is more in the public eye than the East Wing was. He
- 2:07added he doesn't believe the President fully understands why people are so
- 2:11upset, but that's our job right. This may be the line that
- 2:14no one expected, but this is where The
- 2:16line is going to be. A landmark of the performing arts has
- 2:20gone silent, Protesters talked about the importance of the center as the
- 2:25pinnacle of the nation's performing arts world. Bud Wilkinson, a local member
- 2:30of the arts community, set up a chalkboard with Trump's name written
- 2:34on it hundreds of times. Protesters flocked to him to erase the
- 2:37names and replace them with hearts. The Kennedy Center is vital to
- 2:42the arts in Washington. We need it. We need this, Wilkinson said.
- 2:46This is not just about putting the president's name on.
- 2:48The Kennedy Center. It's about censoring the performances and the programming. That's
- 2:53what started all this. So that's what the nitty gritty really is
- 2:57about this. So I want to replace all of this with love.
- 3:00That's why there's a heart. Alina Bachou talked about They opportunities and
- 3:05relationships that students at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts have
- 3:08with the center, And how those relationships might be impacted by what's
- 3:13going on. Her daughter had numerous opportunities to take advantage of all
- 3:17the center had to offer as a student at Duke Ellington, she
- 3:21said I mean they borrowed the beautiful costumes and the beautiful dresses
- 3:25from the Washington National Opera for their performances at Duke Ellington, she
- 3:29said. They also performed on the Center's Millennium Stage. All of those
- 3:34things have gone away because of this craziness, and it just hurts
- 3:38my heart, Bachu said. Laura Steinberg, a volunteer for the last ten
- 3:43years, said the loss of performances has already been heart wrenching. This
- 3:47reminds me of that picture from Tiananmen Square, where that young man
- 3:51stood in front of The tank, she said of the throngs present.
- 3:54This was my visceral response to this. I'll stand in front of
- 3:58the wrecking ball if it's going to come to that. My guess
- 4:01is many of these people would come down, because we saw what
- 4:04he did to the East Wing. Nobody thought he would actually do
- 4:07it, so I think the shock has mobilized people. Friday's event followed
- 4:12a tumultuous week in federal courts in Washington where filings and counterfilings
- 4:17flooded the courts as the administration continues pushing for the President's vanity
- 4:21projects. The administration has made substantive steps to begin work on a
- 4:26number of projects, despite the fact they are still being litigated. Such
- 4:31projects include Trump's Triumphal Arch and the administration's takeover of East Potomac
- 4:35Gulf links and the U. S. Institute of Peace. Speaking from the
- 4:40Oval Office, Trump said he was willing to save the center, which
- 4:43he said was losing money. He did not address a question about
- 4:47demolishing it. We have a lot of people working very hard on
- 4:50it to save it, he said. I can save it easily, but
- 4:54why should we be doing that, and then raise money for the
- 4:56rest of our lives to keep it afloat? Because that's what you
- 5:00have to do if we get no recognition. I think the Trump
- 5:03administration should be recognized as having saved the Kennedy Center.
