Transcript
- 0:45None. Once up, everybody start a late
- 0:54night TV here with another ghostcultmag.com live stream.
- 0:59And tonight we are going to be reviewing and unboxing the vinyl
- 1:04for the brand new album from Insight, which is out this
- 1:08Friday from Raining Phoenix Music.
- 1:11Thanks for being here. I'm just making sure everybody
- 1:13is up on this piece. Bring in all our peeps at once.
- 1:20Think it has worked? Not quite.
- 1:24Let's see. Of course I'm itchy the second
- 1:27the shit goes live, All right, everybody's here.
- 1:29We are streaming, not live, thanks to Stream Yard on
- 1:33Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, and I'm hanging out
- 1:37on TikTok. Best experience for this is
- 1:40YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, and Instagram.
- 1:44But I like keeping everybody kind of in the fold.
- 1:50Just a couple of programming notes.
- 1:52This is our going to be our second live stream of the week.
- 1:55We have another one on Thursday, which is our regular Rocky metal
- 1:58News Live stream every Thursday afternoon slash evening,
- 2:02depending on where you are in the world and having a Trader
- 2:06Joe seltzer post dinner seltzer here.
- 2:11Got the vinyl right behind me on the old bed and yeah, I'm really
- 2:16stoked. This is what I consider to be a
- 2:19pretty great album and I feel like maybe it's going under the
- 2:24radar. It's been such a very busy
- 2:26summer. E Ling is here yo.
- 2:30It's been such a busy summer with releases really.
- 2:32We never went back to the lighter release schedule of the
- 2:36pre pandemic. Ever since 2021 it's just 12
- 2:39months of pack releases. Used to be January wouldn't put
- 2:42out too many records, but other than right after New Year's it's
- 2:46pretty hectic. And then all summer and then
- 2:51used to be like it would quiet down after November 1st and it'd
- 2:54just be box sets and things. But that's not the case anymore.
- 2:57We have year round album releases so it's so thick and I
- 3:03haven't really done. Last night I did my first
- 3:05concert review as a live stream in a long, long time and tonight
- 3:08I'm doing my first album review. Brand new album, not a classic
- 3:11album. That's obvious that we all agree
- 3:14on. It's classic and sort of, or at
- 3:16least I think we all agree, but this is a new album and maybe
- 3:19this will be a new classic. We need to start having new
- 3:23classics to lean on for when our heroes are not making music
- 3:27anymore. So just a couple of housekeeping
- 3:30notes here. I'll begin the deck here for a
- 3:33second. If this is your first time here,
- 3:35chances are Wizard Nosco is here.
- 3:38If this is your first time here with us, feel free to subscribe
- 3:41if you like what we see. If you love rock and metal,
- 3:43that's what we do. News, interviews, concert and
- 3:46metal festival reviews all around the world and content
- 3:48just like this all the time, constantly.
- 3:51It's it's a it's a lot, let me tell you.
- 3:54And we don't have corporate backing, so we'll talk about
- 3:56plugs in a second. But this great photo, which
- 4:00we'll see again in a minute, was shot by Ghost Cult's own Kim
- 4:03Hansen. Papa Bear is here.
- 4:07Sided MV is here. Eastland's album was probably
- 4:12was released in December 2024. I think that was probably a
- 4:15mistake in retrospect. You know what, do what you got
- 4:18to do. I also teach and train bands on
- 4:23the music industry, marketing and social media, and one of my
- 4:25areas of expertise is release schedules.
- 4:28I've consulted on this in the past.
- 4:31Liam is here also. So you know what these thing?
- 4:33There's always a deluxe edition of Band Camp Friday.
- 4:36Push an extra track, digital expanded version, re release it
- 4:41later when your vinyl is ready. If it's not ready you know
- 4:46there's so many options and things you can do.
- 4:48Always feel free to DM me. Advice is free and I'm pretty
- 4:54easy to work with. I probably will be doing some
- 4:57free content for bands and music people soon, I just haven't
- 5:01gotten around to it. But I'm going to get to it, I
- 5:03promise. So just a couple of bits of
- 5:05housekeeping here and obviously we're here to talk about this
- 5:07new album, insights, Savage, New Times.
- 5:09We're going to break it all down.
- 5:11This is coming out this week on Raining Phoenix Music.
- 5:14And again, like I said, you have so many options and bombarded
- 5:17with so many choices that whenever I can, we try to like
- 5:21cut through and help fans. So just in case you didn't know,
- 5:27if you're a regular subscriber to Ghost Cult on YouTube or you
- 5:30followed most of our socials, you would notice that I ran an
- 5:34interview with Richie Cavallera of Insight on Monday.
- 5:37We go way back. I've interviewed Richie a bunch
- 5:40and he's always just a fun, great person.
- 5:44He is who he says he is in person and over interviews and
- 5:48things like that. It's a it's, it's a, it's a
- 5:52small world and it's a smaller business.
- 5:55Dungeons and Dead is here. What's up?
- 5:57Bel Figor is here. Bel Figor.
- 5:59That's very funny. I just got that joke.
- 6:02I understood that reference. So yeah.
- 6:03Check out our interview with Richie after you watch this if
- 6:07you're interested for more content on Insight coming up
- 6:11tomorrow or later today, depending on where you are in
- 6:14the world, is going to be our interview with Angelo Moore of
- 6:17Fishbone. Their new album is out this
- 6:19week. And my co-owner and partner Omar
- 6:24Cordy interviewed Angelo. We've seen fishbone with the new
- 6:27lineup not too long ago. And he is a legend of multiple
- 6:31genres, punk, funk, hip hop, I mean guide toward Metallica,
- 6:36like all kinds of stuff. Angelo is incredible as his
- 6:41Fishbone. And then just again, as I said,
- 6:44we are not corporate backed. So if you feel like donating to
- 6:48us, if you're on YouTube, you can hit us up with a super chat
- 6:52or a super likes or a super thanks.
- 6:55Feel free to drop us a donation. We always appreciate it.
- 6:59Every dime we make goes back into the company.
- 7:02Here's what we do and how we do it.
- 7:06And of course, there's a price menu and where to pay.
- 7:10So you know, if you can throw us a couple of bucks, it's
- 7:13appreciated. We have channel memberships on
- 7:18YouTube. I'm going to start pushing that
- 7:20a little more also. And there's our Cash App in case
- 7:24you want to check it out on the other apps and things.
- 7:28And just a reminder, a little more housekeeping.
- 7:31My other podcast, the Glacial Musical Podcast, is in the
- 7:34middle of the series on the original Ozzy solo albums, which
- 7:37we had planned to do before he passed away.
- 7:40So now it just feels like a lot of Ozzy worship.
- 7:42But hey, could do a lot worse than that.
- 7:44But we are doing a giveaway. Anyone in the world can enter to
- 7:48win either a vinyl bundle or ACD bundle from my Co host Nick's
- 7:53personal collection. He is culling the herd if you
- 7:56will, so he can buy more stuff and so he gives away a lot of
- 7:59his stuff from time to time. So feel free to check that out
- 8:04and the link is in the description if you want to check
- 8:06it out just about everywhere. I will.
- 8:09Maybe I'll place it in there again just to just so you know
- 8:13it's in here. I'll even skip all the rules and
- 8:15everything and you can just go to the post here and do it.
- 8:31I'll drop it in here as well. Hey, look at that right in the
- 8:35comments. There you go, Gleam IO.
- 8:39All right, so let's talk about this album and I'm going to just
- 8:42in Biggin myself for a second and you know, we'll do a little
- 8:49insight by the numbers. But before I do that, you know
- 8:52one thing that a lot of people, you know, obviously Richie is
- 8:56Max Cavalier's son. He has been around music his
- 8:59entire life. I think I became aware of Richie
- 9:04when he was a little kid because he used to come out on Ozfest 98
- 9:07and sing bleed and do the, the Fred Durst rap part with Fred
- 9:12and Max for bleed from the very first Soul Fly record.
- 9:17You know, years later. He started Insight 21 years ago.
- 9:21He was a, he was a youngster, a young pup.
- 9:23He's a seasoned veteran now of music and the and the metal
- 9:27world. And he's no, you know,
- 9:29obviously, look, he's got a very powerful agent mom and manager
- 9:33mom and infamously world famous metal icon dad, but he's never
- 9:38really relied on that. And, you know, Insight has
- 9:42forged its own path. He has had basically, except for
- 9:46one person, the same lineup since 2013.
- 9:48He's got a recently new guitar player we'll talk about that
- 9:51made a huge impact on this new record.
- 9:53So here's a little Insight by the numbers. 21 years as a band,
- 9:577 full lengths and two EPS, including this new album, Savage
- 10:01New Times. And I do want to say that I
- 10:03think like their last record was kind of an in between the EP and
- 10:06an album. Jim is here.
- 10:08What's up? Jim doing a little album review
- 10:10and vinyl unboxing today for the new Inside album.
- 10:14If you hate spoilers and you just want to listen to it on the
- 10:18release, that's fair too. But I'm just trying to shine a
- 10:21light on a band I think is doing a great job.
- 10:24I love this new record. So technically 7 records as of
- 10:27this week. Again, I think Wasted is a
- 10:30little bit of a hybrid of EPN album.
- 10:35You know, they haven't just opened for Max's bands, just
- 10:38like all his kids have forged their own kind of way.
- 10:43Infamously, Insight has toured an open for The Dillinger Escape
- 10:46Plan, Devil Driver, 6 Feet Under Plate, festivals all over the
- 10:49world and everything. Savage New Times is produced by
- 10:53Steve Evans, who's mostly known for hardcore and metal albums.
- 10:57Interestingly enough, in my interview with Richie this that
- 10:59ran this week. Yeah, I'm up a little late, had
- 11:06some errands to do today. Today was actually the light day
- 11:09in my week. I'm sorry to hear you're back in
- 11:11the hospital gym. DM me and let me know what's
- 11:13going on with you if you can. So Matthew is here.
- 11:18Love to Bill this year, Mike, Scotty, Sean, etcetera.
- 11:22Good to see you all. Yolk Devils is back.
- 11:24Thanks for being back. So he told us in the interview
- 11:28Richie that they picked Steve Evans because he produced an
- 11:32album Sepultura did when Max was out of the band with Igor And
- 11:35Igor is a huge fan of Steve and he recommended Steve to Richie,
- 11:41which is super interesting because usually the two camps of
- 11:44Sepultura and and you know, the Max Soulfly, Cavalier
- 11:48Conspiracy, etcetera, they never mesh.
- 11:50They don't cross the streams, but produced by Steve, who's an
- 11:54incredible producer and mixed by Arthur Rizik, who you know,
- 11:58everybody knows now as a producer, mixer and guitar
- 12:01player. The very inventive artwork is by
- 12:04Marcelo or Marcello Vasco. We'll go back to it in a second
- 12:08when we show the the vinyl. And they just signed to Raining
- 12:11Phoenix Music after a long run on Minus Head Records, which is
- 12:14a more underground label. Raining Phoenix's the former
- 12:18staffers and A&R people that used to help run Nuclear Blast
- 12:22and they fractured into two companies and Raining Phoenix
- 12:27has a ton of huge bands, including the Sugar Opeth
- 12:30Halloween coming up soon on a Halloween interview.
- 12:34So and obviously in addition to Richie Cavallera, Wayne
- 12:38Richardson is the newish guitar player.
- 12:40He's been in the band two years after Mike De Leon, who has been
- 12:43in, you know, Felon, Selma and the Illegals and Soul Flying, a
- 12:48bunch of other bands. Elle continues to be the
- 12:51bassist. Guy's a monster.
- 12:52And Lennon Lopez is also a monster on drums.
- 12:55Just an absolute killer band. Let's talk about this record for
- 13:00a second. Savage New Times.
- 13:02And what I'm going to do here is I'm going to unbox the vinyl.
- 13:05They sent me the vinyl. I haven't listened to it yet,
- 13:07sadly. I've only been jamming out the
- 13:09record on the promo. Nicely packaged and safe, which
- 13:14I appreciate. Haven't been able to afford a
- 13:20lot of new records, so I'm very appreciative to get anything
- 13:22donated to me. Here it is, and it's beautiful
- 13:29vinyl splendor packed beautifully.
- 13:31It'll be a good idea to not knock it on top of the thing
- 13:35here. Yep.
- 13:39So Yep, after I open this and show it off to you, it's going
- 13:43to go right in my vinyl sleeves. Both an inner sleeve for the
- 13:46vinyl and the outer sleeve for the jacket.
- 13:48You can listen to my other podcast, the Glacially Musical
- 13:51Podcast, to learn about why you should put all your vinyls in
- 13:56protective mylars, but mostly to protect your needle, not just to
- 14:02protect the actual. I know half the people that buy
- 14:07vinyl don't actually have record players, but I listen to my
- 14:10records and I love my records. So here's the cover again.
- 14:13Marcello Vasco did the cover. Here's the back cover.
- 14:17This is a single, no gatefold, one album, nice and economical.
- 14:22Technically does still have the minus had logo on it, so I
- 14:25wonder if they just did a deal with them for this.
- 14:27But yeah, side A, side B. Let's check it out.
- 14:32Already got a paper? Want to get your vinyl out of
- 14:37paper as much as possible? Was it an static?
- 14:40Oh, look at this beautiful green.
- 14:42I think you could see this in the interview with Richie behind
- 14:45him, right? Look at this gorgeous kind of
- 14:48snot green vinyl, really cool kind of alien blood looking
- 14:55thing here. Really nice in the in the studio
- 14:58lighting here. I can't wait to play this thing
- 15:00when it came in the paper, but it's not the paper with the
- 15:02mylar. So I will replace that and then
- 15:05let's see if it came with anything else.
- 15:06So it looks like an insert. Nice that lyric sheet.
- 15:17Very cool with more artwork and the inside cover here, which I
- 15:23believe is by Ben Alexis and dot Cobra on socials.
- 15:28So super cool and again, very appreciative that they sent this
- 15:33along. Now let's let's talk about the
- 15:38record a little bit, right? And actually I can even play
- 15:41some of it. Unfortunately, you guys on
- 15:42TikTok are not going to get to hear it, but I might be able to
- 15:45play a few. We just want to double check the
- 15:48official authorized tracks are just a Rat, No Mercy, No
- 15:52Forgiveness, Lies and Dolores, which is one of my favorite
- 15:55tracks on the whole record, really surprised and shocked me.
- 15:58Just just for a little backtrack.
- 16:01Inside is a band that is in the same vein as Lamb of God, Devil
- 16:06Driver, Machine Head, Gojira. They're a little less
- 16:10progressive, but they are straight up brutal modern metal,
- 16:15you know, obviously inspired by Pantera, obviously clearly
- 16:18owning homage to Sepultura, the big four of thrash, Slayer, but
- 16:25I think they're a little more melodic even than they're given
- 16:28credit for in this new album. I think is going to really open
- 16:33people up, especially the job Lane Richardson did.
- 16:35There's a lot of like mellow death in the leads that I really
- 16:39loved that kind of reminded me of early In Flames and Soil Work
- 16:43Records. And Richie has really stepped
- 16:47out of himself as a vocalist to really broaden his palette in
- 16:51terms of what he's capable of doing.
- 16:53He's always been just a very aggressive, hard singer, but now
- 16:56he can sing on key, scream on key, so it's like a little bit
- 17:00more melody. It's not just straight monotone
- 17:04screaming and song wise, this record is fantastic.
- 17:09It's heavy all the way through, but it's really, it actually is
- 17:13varied. It's very hard for bands to hey,
- 17:16Rick Haven is here and Harry is here.
- 17:18Thanks for being here. You know, it's hard for bands to
- 17:22kind of adapt and adjust and do something a little differently.
- 17:26So I really appreciate it when a band does so.
- 17:29The very first track on the record was this song Lies, which
- 17:32I'll play a little of just a little, because I don't want the
- 17:36demons of and YouTube the 3D like real good, real good bass
- 17:52brass, the crossover brass. Super cool, super heavy, great
- 18:15way to kick the album off. The second track is Feel This
- 18:20Shit, I'm fired Up. Pretty damn killer.
- 18:22Just a Rat was also a single. This was a big music video for
- 18:25them. This song's a banger and it's
- 18:26quick. Kind of Gojira, man of God.
- 18:41Also a little machine head in there.
- 19:05Nice, like real hardcore, right? And then the chorus is like
- 19:08straight up metal. So I'm a big Tsunami fan there,
- 19:11geek, but I'm in the middle of a review, so I'm not going to.
- 19:15If you tune in on Thursday, I might honor that request.
- 19:19So those are just the first couple of songs.
- 19:21Here's another one that I thought was really good.
- 19:23No mercy, no forgiveness. What a nice screw you're going
- 19:32to sit in there. Some good shit there.
- 19:54So yeah, I'm really digging this album a whole lot.
- 19:57It didn't surprise me because I expected it to be at least good.
- 20:01But it's so good that I really want you all to check it out
- 20:04too. And that the closing track is
- 20:07Savage New Times as well, which I really also like.
- 20:11So it's all bangers. I got to be honest with you.
- 20:14It's it's really, you know, a lot of bands say this is the
- 20:16best record we ever made, but this is actually the best record
- 20:19that insight has ever made. And they have had, you know,
- 20:22like I said, some lineup changes over the years, but most of all
- 20:26that rhythm section has been locked in since 2013 with
- 20:30Richie. So those 3 is a writing team as
- 20:33as well as the new guitar, new ish guitar player.
- 20:35He's been in for a few years. But Lane Richardson is just just
- 20:40stepped up here and really gets to lay it down.
- 20:45And they're still, like I said, a very, you know, even they
- 20:48signed to a a bigger label and they're they're getting
- 20:51hopefully the push I think they deserve.
- 20:53But I think it's it's super cool that this is, you know, the
- 20:58result of their hard work and is also the great sounding record.
- 21:02Just beautiful sounding, great mix.
- 21:05Nothing is fighting for space. I can't wait to hear this thing
- 21:08on the vinyl. And yeah, really excited about
- 21:11it. I do want to spend a minute
- 21:12talking about the longest song in the album.
- 21:14Is this sort of the highlight song of the album is this side
- 21:18to Frank Dolores. And it seems like an epic.
- 21:21It's almost like a hardcore power ballad, like it's so
- 21:24heavy, almost like a this love or like the thing that should
- 21:29not be like Metallica. And it's got this insane great
- 21:34melody and and really good storytelling by Richie on the
- 21:38lyrics. I'm not 100% sure what this
- 21:39song's about, but it's fierce. You know, I guess it's up for
- 21:44people to make their own mind up about what you're hearing.
- 21:47But yeah, what a what an absolute beast of a record this
- 21:50is. This is kind of my new approach
- 21:52to doing these reviews here rather than to do every track,
- 21:56but here's my opinion of the best tracks.
- 21:58It is more than half of them. Lies, feel this shit, I'm fired
- 22:01up. Just a rat.
- 22:03Doubts in the Fear, Dolores No Mercy No Forgiveness and the
- 22:06late album track never Died once which is also brutal.
- 22:10And these are just. There's no fat on these songs.
- 22:12There's nothing that feels too long like you never like.
- 22:16Skip this or skip that. It's all bangers.
- 22:19I listen to this multiple times all the way through and I really
- 22:23find myself coming back to this record quite a bit now.
- 22:26And obviously the title track is the closer.
- 22:28So super fierce. We'll just wind this down a
- 22:32little bit with some cool live photos of them.
- 22:36These are shot by our friend Annie Atlasman at the Max
- 22:39Cavalera Dynasty show last fall. I'm hoping Max will do another
- 22:43one of these every year or every few years where it's, you know,
- 22:46a lot of locals and underground bands as well as like sort of
- 22:49the Max family of bands. And yeah, this is a killer got.
- 22:55I feel like Savage New Times is the first record where Insight
- 22:59sounds raw on the record like they are live.
- 23:03And I mean that as a compliment. It is a great sounding record
- 23:07that is recorded and mixed beautifully, but it feels like a
- 23:11coat like the most cohesive they have ever sounded in terms of
- 23:14the writing. And I can't wait to hear some of
- 23:16these songs live. But these are some cool shots of
- 23:18the band. There's L on the bass, killing
- 23:21it as usual, my man Lennon on the drums, Phenomenal job on the
- 23:28drums on this record. And of course, here is Wayne
- 23:31Richardson on the guitar, that beautiful looking guitar there
- 23:36and the whole band there except Richie, Pretty cool looking.
- 23:38So yeah, man, I'm very excited for this record to come out and
- 23:42drop and see where it finds them.
- 23:45I hope it finds them with new opportunities and, and new
- 23:49things to explore and new places to play in front of new fans as
- 23:53well as old again. They have been around for almost
- 23:5520 years with this band. So this is not a new band.
- 23:58This is not a, you know, this band is established, a veteran
- 24:02has been around and you know, they went, they went to Europe
- 24:07already to prove, you know, sort of on tour ready this year to
- 24:09promote the record. And they got a much more coming
- 24:13down the road. Flannel 916 is here.
- 24:16What I put up Lil Shorty, Michael Thomas.
- 24:20Let's just see if anybody else is still hanging on the gram.
- 24:23Very good to see you all. And that's kind of where we're
- 24:27at. You know, if I had to put a
- 24:30grade on this, we do whole numbers one to 10 and nothing is
- 24:35ever really as bad as a one. We most records are A6 or A7.
- 24:40I'll be honest with you, this is a high 8 or a nine.
- 24:44It's all bangers. It's, you know, four guys
- 24:48writing and playing over themselves to a tremendous level
- 24:53and it's just absolutely ass beaters, non-stop ass beaters.
- 24:57Every song, even Dolores, which has some dynamics and some
- 25:01different tempo stuff. It's just turns into a rager
- 25:05overtime, which, you know, I'm pretty stoked on and and I have
- 25:13quite a bit of, you know, like a list already of my favorite
- 25:17records of this year. I might do a half point more
- 25:20pass more than 1/2 point already, but I might do like a
- 25:23year so far piece next week. But yeah, this is one of my
- 25:27favorite records of the year so far and it's absolutely
- 25:30blistering. So if you love heavy shit and
- 25:32you have no patience for any other shit, this is your shit.
- 25:35That's that's it in a nutshell. Any case, we'll be back with
- 25:40another video tomorrow. Our interview with Fishbone runs
- 25:43tomorrow AM, and I'll be back on Thursday with another live
- 25:48stream. As I say all the time, you could
- 25:50watch anybody else's show you. If you're here, you spend some
- 25:52time with me and I'm grateful. Thanks for hanging out.
