- 0:04Speaker 1: to ten.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Wor.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Well. Roger Friedman the great entertainment reporter. And he's got
- 0:11Speaker 1: an excellent website, showbiz for one one dot com. You
- 0:15Speaker 1: should check it every day. There's always new stuff up there.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Showbiz for one one dot com. Roger Friedman, How you doing.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I'm great?
- 0:23Speaker 1: How are you? I'm good. So Memorial Day weekend, people
- 0:26Speaker 1: want to go to movies. What's a good movie to see?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Well, the big movie this weekend is The Mandalorian and
- 0:32Speaker 2: gragu Do you know who they are?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I have no idea what a title.
- 0:37Speaker 2: They're not Whaling Flowers and Madam, Oh they are. The
- 0:43Speaker 2: Mandalorian is a spinoff from Star Wars. Oh, and it's
- 0:47Speaker 2: been a hit TV show on Disney Plus for the
- 0:49Speaker 2: last three years, and now instead of doing a fourth season,
- 0:53Speaker 2: they decided to move into movies because it was so
- 0:55Speaker 2: popular and it's terrific. It's really fun on Pedro Pascal
- 1:01Speaker 2: is the star of it, and the guest star in
- 1:05Speaker 2: the movie is Martin Scorsese. Oh, and he plays like
- 1:10Speaker 2: an like a cgi character. He's hysterically funny, and it's
- 1:17Speaker 2: it's really kind of a great popcorn movie, perfect memorial
- 1:20Speaker 2: their weekend.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Hey, speaking of movies, that Michael Jackson movie Boy that
- 1:24Speaker 1: is still a number one on its way to making
- 1:27Speaker 1: a billion dollars.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, still number one and opening in Japan today where
- 1:33Speaker 2: it still hasn't played there a couple of countries, big
- 1:35Speaker 2: countries where it hasn't played. Japan is going to be huge. Yeah,
- 1:38Speaker 2: the Michael Jackson movie is it's going to break a
- 1:41Speaker 2: billion dollars worldwide. It's a real phenomenon. And his records
- 1:47Speaker 2: are selling like crazy, and it's too bad he's not
- 1:50Speaker 2: here to see it.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Hey, what about the Devilwares product too? That is that
- 1:54Speaker 1: doing Okay?
- 1:56Speaker 2: It loves Devilware's Product two is still doing very well.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's going to hit around two hundred million dollars soon,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and that's enough. Even if it just does a little
- 2:04Speaker 2: bit more than that, that's probably enough to make it
- 2:07Speaker 2: for a third movie. So I'm sure that we'll see
- 2:09Speaker 2: these people again.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I don't see that. But is it good the second one?
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's a lot like the first one. There's not much difference.
- 2:17Speaker 2: But people really wanted to see these characters again and
- 2:21Speaker 2: it just clicked with the audience.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah, But there's no, there's no The.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Only thing different in it then from the first one.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It was twenty years ago when Vogue magazine was you know,
- 2:31Speaker 2: a gigantic hit and they had you know, five hundred
- 2:34Speaker 2: page issues and all that. And now twenty years later,
- 2:37Speaker 2: with the Internet and everything that's happened, the magazine magazines
- 2:41Speaker 2: are dying and so the movie sort of addresses that,
- 2:46Speaker 2: and it starts to move in a new direction, maybe
- 2:49Speaker 2: towards the website and social media, and they started to
- 2:53Speaker 2: mention all that in the movie, and you can see
- 2:56Speaker 2: that the magazine the era is coming to an end.
- 2:58Speaker 2: It's very sad. Annity Fair for example, which is Vogue
- 3:02Speaker 2: sister publication on Connie Nest Blust, fifty five percent of
- 3:06Speaker 2: its website traffic last month. Really, yeah, unbelievable. It's been
- 3:13Speaker 2: going down, but now it really sort of kicked in.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And this is a combination of you know, people are
- 3:19Speaker 2: able to get their news in so many different places now,
- 3:23Speaker 2: and you know, they're obsessed with Instagram and TikTok and
- 3:27Speaker 2: all that. So it's very hard to get someone to
- 3:29Speaker 2: read an article online, especially a long one.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Well yeah, no, everything's shorter attention span, but hey, speaking
- 3:36Speaker 1: of the Devilwares product, I think I told you I
- 3:39Speaker 1: never saw the original until like a month ago. I
- 3:42Speaker 1: saw it a month ago. I was shocked, shocked. It
- 3:45Speaker 1: was supposed to be this horrible boss. I'm watching the
- 3:48Speaker 1: woman in the movie. I've worked for people one hundred
- 3:51Speaker 1: times worse than that. You have too, if you're in
- 3:54Speaker 1: the media, everybody acts like that. That well, she was.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Pretty Merylship was very good. She was pretty mean in
- 4:01Speaker 2: the first movie. In the second movie, she's more of
- 4:03Speaker 2: a pussy cat. In the second movie, they've softened her up,
- 4:07Speaker 2: and that's partially because Anna Winter and Vogue magazine got
- 4:10Speaker 2: involved in the movie.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So but they've made it a lot softer than it was.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I haven't been in the meetium my whole life. You two,
- 4:18Speaker 1: you've worked with people ten times worse than that woman, haven't.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I work with people now who are too worse than that?
- 4:24Speaker 2: Oh my god, I'd rather work for the Mandalorian.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So Hey, Bruce Springsteen. Chris Christie is the biggest fan
- 4:33Speaker 1: in the world. And there he was standing there at
- 4:36Speaker 1: the concert stage and Springsteen walks off, Christy puts his
- 4:39Speaker 1: hand out.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I'm very happy for Chris Christy you know, in twenty fifteen,
- 4:43Speaker 2: I went to Radio City to see the first Adele
- 4:45Speaker 2: concert and he was sitting right in front of me.
- 4:48Speaker 2: He was such a fan, and that was after Bridgegate,
- 4:51Speaker 2: and even though my instinct was to not like him,
- 4:54Speaker 2: he was very charming and he was so excited about
- 4:56Speaker 2: being He loves music. So then he went to Bringsteen
- 5:00Speaker 2: concert the other day and he was standing right there
- 5:03Speaker 2: waiting to shake his hand and Bruce. It looked like
- 5:06Speaker 2: from a camera angle that Bruce sort of snubbed him
- 5:08Speaker 2: and ran past him and just didn't acknowledge him. But
- 5:11Speaker 2: I don't think that's what happened. I think Bruce just
- 5:14Speaker 2: didn't see him.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Oh well, it's hard not to see Chris Christie like
- 5:18Speaker 1: the Goodyear blimp. I can't miss him.
- 5:20Speaker 2: He is. But you know what, I was in that
- 5:23Speaker 2: crowd the other night, not Chris Christie's crowd the night before,
- 5:26Speaker 2: a couple of nights before. I can tell you it's
- 5:28Speaker 2: pandemonium in the Madison Square garden when he's playing, So
- 5:31Speaker 2: I don't doubt that it's a blur to him as
- 5:34Speaker 2: he's going by. Anyway, they invited Chris back the next
- 5:40Speaker 2: night and he came and he nearly got backstage, but
- 5:43Speaker 2: he got his picture taken, and I have the picture
- 5:45Speaker 2: up and showed his four one one. He's beaming like
- 5:47Speaker 2: a sixteen year old. So I'm happy for him in
- 5:51Speaker 2: that sense, all right, not for turning off the George
- 5:54Speaker 2: Washington Bridge, but for getting to see his hero.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yeah. So, hey, Mark Furman, he was the detective the OJ.
- 6:04Speaker 1: He just died. He was young, fighting cancer. You know
- 6:08Speaker 1: a lot of people. He's gone straight to hell at people.
- 6:12Speaker 1: He's meeting OJ for lunch today in Hell.
- 6:15Speaker 2: But I wrote about Mark Furman extensively in New York
- 6:19Speaker 2: Magazine thirty years ago during the O. J. Simpson trial.
- 6:22Speaker 2: He was a very racist, awful cup and you know
- 6:25Speaker 2: what I used to say, Uh, he he was framing
- 6:29Speaker 2: a guilty person, like we knew OJ. But he he
- 6:34Speaker 2: was so dead set on making sure OJ was guilty
- 6:38Speaker 2: that he framed him. And everything that went on in
- 6:41Speaker 2: that trial concerning Mark Fehman was a joke. And the
- 6:44Speaker 2: worst part of it was that he had a terrible
- 6:46Speaker 2: history in Los Angeles with the police. He was extremely
- 6:49Speaker 2: racist and very You know, this is before the internet.
- 6:53Speaker 2: There was really no internet. In fact, at the time
- 6:56Speaker 2: I was going on if anyone remembers this. They used
- 6:58Speaker 2: to have Lexus and Nexus at a cost like fifty
- 7:00Speaker 2: dollars a minute. And I was going through from New
- 7:03Speaker 2: York Magazine. I was going back through the LA Times
- 7:07Speaker 2: reports about Mark Ferman, going, I don't understand how this
- 7:10Speaker 2: guy could still be a cop. He was just the worst.
- 7:13Speaker 2: And you know the problem with LA has always been,
- 7:15Speaker 2: as opposed to our great city, we have a tabloid
- 7:18Speaker 2: newspaper community, so if something happens, it's all over the
- 7:23Speaker 2: place within twenty four minutes. And it even was before
- 7:25Speaker 2: the internet. You know, you remember the days where the
- 7:28Speaker 2: Post and the Daily News were competing in New York
- 7:30Speaker 2: news Day, but LA never had a press like that,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and the La Times was always the lad. He was
- 7:37Speaker 2: always able to tamp down any bad news in the
- 7:39Speaker 2: La Times. So nobody really knew who this guy was
- 7:43Speaker 2: when he was lurking around Ojay's house, moving gloves around
- 7:46Speaker 2: and socks and all kinds of crazy stuff. But he
- 7:49Speaker 2: was a very, very bad guy.
- 7:51Speaker 1: There was a great moment they put him on the stand.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Have you ever used the N word?
- 7:54Speaker 2: No?
- 7:54Speaker 1: No, no, sure, no never. Then they bring in a
- 7:57Speaker 1: tape of him using the n word for those He
- 8:00Speaker 1: was actually convicted of perjury, making him the only person
- 8:04Speaker 1: convicted in the whole OJ trial.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Oh yeah, No, he did terrible things. I mean he
- 8:11Speaker 2: once had a female partner on patrol and he turned
- 8:16Speaker 2: gasoline on her at the gas station. She actually sued
- 8:19Speaker 2: the department in one I mean it was a terrible situation. Yeah,
- 8:23Speaker 2: so no one's I don't think anyone's mourning him today. No.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Hey, people don't realize. If you're a younger person, you
- 8:30Speaker 1: don't realize what that OJ trial was for. Like, was
- 8:32Speaker 1: it nineteen ninety five, ninety six? It just dominated the
- 8:35Speaker 1: whole country. Stopped to watch that for a year.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Oh my god, you know, it was eighteen months. It
- 8:41Speaker 2: started in June of nineteen ninety four and it ended
- 8:44Speaker 2: October second, nineteen ninety five. I would say the entire time,
- 8:48Speaker 2: eighteen months. There was nothing else that I did, just
- 8:51Speaker 2: about and I was in the courtroom. I used to
- 8:54Speaker 2: go down with Dominic Dunn from the Chateau Armont. We
- 8:58Speaker 2: would sit there through hours of this stuff. It was crazy.
- 9:02Speaker 2: OJ was a mess. They had to drug him when
- 9:05Speaker 2: they did the preliminary hearings in December of nineteen ninety four.
- 9:11Speaker 2: He was making all these like clicking noises and sort
- 9:14Speaker 2: of ticks and moving around. Finally they just drugged him
- 9:17Speaker 2: for the rest of the trial. It was really crazy.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Everybody involved became world famous. It was Marsha Clark, the prosecutor,
- 9:25Speaker 1: who was the guy, Chris Darden. Chris Darden the judge,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, the judge Edo. He was a joke.
- 9:33Speaker 2: He was. One day, I was sitting in the courtroom
- 9:35Speaker 2: and they were waiting and waiting and waiting for the
- 9:37Speaker 2: judge Edo to come out. And when he finally comes
- 9:40Speaker 2: out of his chambers into the courtroom, he's got Larry
- 9:42Speaker 2: King with him. They've been backstage. He's like backstage with
- 9:47Speaker 2: Larry King. And then Larry King comes out to start
- 9:50Speaker 2: shaking OJ's hand at the witness table. I mean, it
- 9:53Speaker 2: was like a circus. It was crazy.
- 9:55Speaker 1: The judge got a little too star struck in Yeah, Hey,
- 9:59Speaker 1: they had a really good judge. You think it would
- 10:01Speaker 1: have gone differently.
- 10:03Speaker 2: No, because they were they were just in the wrong place.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It was.
- 10:07Speaker 2: They tried the case in the wrong district. The people
- 10:12Speaker 2: that were the jurors were very, very mad about, you know,
- 10:16Speaker 2: racial tensions in Los Angeles at the time, Rodney King
- 10:19Speaker 2: and all of that, and they were determined to get
- 10:22Speaker 2: it OJ. It didn't matter if OJ had stood up
- 10:24Speaker 2: and said I killed her. They were going to get
- 10:27Speaker 2: they were going to let him off.
- 10:28Speaker 1: But they also mishandled it also.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Johnny Cochran had to tell you the truth. Johnny Cochrane
- 10:33Speaker 2: and Robert Shapiro put on a good show.
- 10:36Speaker 1: You know, they were really good.
- 10:37Speaker 2: John I knew Johnny. I knew them both. And Johnny
- 10:39Speaker 2: Cochran's gone now. But Johnny Cochran, he was very clever.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And when they did that, you know, the if it
- 10:46Speaker 2: doesn't fit, you must have quit, you know. And and
- 10:49Speaker 2: the whole thing was rigged from the start because the
- 10:51Speaker 2: glove was not going to fit. There was no way
- 10:53Speaker 2: it was going to fit. But they got it. And
- 10:56Speaker 2: once they got that, they had it.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Wow. Well it was quite a time. It was an
- 11:00Speaker 1: amazing period. But Roger Friedman great stuff. Make sure you
