- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 101 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: So I suppose we'll keep going on our Latin theme from last time because I learn something new and interesting about the word second.
- 0:43I Hate Talking: Second, like S E C A O.
- 0:48I Hate Talking: O N D S E C O N D.
- 0:53I Hate Talking: Yes, as in the measurement of time.
- 0:56I Hate Talking: 21 2nd.
- 0:57I Hate Talking: 2.
- 0:58I Hate Talking: The 2nd of something.
- 1:00I Hate Talking: I'm the 2nd child.
- 1:01I Hate Talking: Well, that's actually how 2nd got its name.
- 1:04I Hate Talking: OK, tell me about it.
- 1:07I Hate Talking: I wanna know.
- 1:08I Hate Talking: So Basically, it's a medieval Latin phrase that developed the word minute because they had hours and then Basically, minute became a smaller part of the hour.
- 1:25I Hate Talking: So, paramuta.
- 1:27I Hate Talking: Meant The next smallest part.
- 1:31I Hate Talking: Dividing up an hour into minutes.
- 1:34I Hate Talking: And then The phrase or word second came about because the Latin phrase was pars menuta secunda.
- 1:44I Hate Talking: The 2nd smallest part.
- 1:46I Hate Talking: Hm, but why is it the 2nd smallest part?
- 1:49I Hate Talking: It's smaller than a minute.
- 1:51I Hate Talking: Yeah, as in, like, the 2nd step in terms of reducing something.
- 1:57I Hate Talking: OK, so my brain saw it as like, there's a small one, and this is the next smallest.
- 2:04I Hate Talking: No, it's more sequential, so minute is the 1st small part, -- and then 2nd is the 2nd small -- part.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: Well, there you go.
- 2:14I Hate Talking: So Do they have one for the 3rd?
- 2:18I Hate Talking: Is that the 3rd smallest part?
- 2:20I Hate Talking: Yeah, cause then I think the metric system took over and then you'd have nanoseconds and things like that.
- 2:26I Hate Talking: Oh, OK, but 2, so like a second is 1 Mississippi.
- 2:32I Hate Talking: Right, I don't know if medieval Latin people would have really a need to divide time smaller than a second in terms of the lives that they lived at that time.
- 2:42I Hate Talking: But do they still use it the same as like I'm the second born in my family?
- 2:47I Hate Talking: Does that mean the same thing?
- 2:49I Hate Talking: Yes, Sekunda would just mean the second thing, as in a sequential thing after the 1st.
- 2:56I Hate Talking: But then, like, the next thing after that is still 2nd.
- 3:01I Hate Talking: And then that would be 3rd.
- 3:04I Hate Talking: OK, well, you said that you didn't have a 3rd.
- 3:06I Hate Talking: Well, I don't think they had a 3rd division of time.
- 3:09I Hate Talking: OK, so it's not like.
- 3:11I Hate Talking: Minutes, seconds, and Thirds, whatever the word for third would be in Latin.
- 3:19I Hate Talking: OK.
- 3:20I Hate Talking: The second means comes after.
- 3:23I Hate Talking: The first, wait, what is that again?
- 3:26I Hate Talking: What?
- 3:29I Hate Talking: 2nd comes after 12 comes after 1.
- 3:31I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 3:32I Hate Talking: Give me the definition again.
- 3:33I Hate Talking: Pars Menuto Secunda.
- 3:38I Hate Talking: The 2nd smallest part.
- 3:40I Hate Talking: So I'm the Ps Mundo Kuma of my family.
- 3:46I Hate Talking: No, because I think it has more to do with Division rather than.
- 3:52I Hate Talking: Well, maybe not, it's a sequential division.
- 3:55I Hate Talking: That's what I'm trying to say.
- 3:56I Hate Talking: It's sequential division, not.
- 3:58I Hate Talking: Sequence exclusively and nor division exclusively.
- 4:02I Hate Talking: OK, so give me another example then, because all I can think of is a 2nd like, one Mississippi.
- 4:09I Hate Talking: Or I'm the second born.
- 4:11I Hate Talking: So what are you getting at?
- 4:13I Hate Talking: The etymology of the word 2 in terms of the time measurement.
- 4:18I Hate Talking: -- Which -- is The 2nd smallest part.
- 4:23I Hate Talking: Bars Manuta Sekunda.
- 4:26I Hate Talking: OK, I can't be the only one that's confused right now, cause when I think of the second smallest part, I think it's not the smallest, it's the next smallest.
- 4:36I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 4:38I Hate Talking: So I'm dividing something that's a whole, an hour into smaller parts.
- 4:43I Hate Talking: Minutes And then I divide that.
- 4:47I Hate Talking: Small part into even smaller parts.
- 4:50I Hate Talking: Seconds OK.
- 4:54I Hate Talking: Well, this is probably why we as Westerners don't think like Latin people.
- 5:00I Hate Talking: Because I picture that, that's a good explanation.
- 5:02I Hate Talking: I see that and then, OK, that's why it's seconds.
- 5:04I Hate Talking: But when you say second smallest, I think of.
- 5:08I Hate Talking: Not the smallest, but the next.
- 5:12I Hate Talking: In that line Yeah, another explanation here is that it says it's the 2nd reduction.
- 5:19I Hate Talking: OK, so you divide it and then you divide it again.
- 5:23I Hate Talking: OK, so I can see that, that maybe I'm, am I lost in this, because that makes sense to me, like, you have a circle, you cut it in half.
- 5:32I Hate Talking: And you cut that in half again.
- 5:35I Hate Talking: Like that makes sense to me that.
- 5:37I Hate Talking: Saying the second smallest makes me think.
- 5:42I Hate Talking: You're not the smallest, but you're the next smallest.
- 5:45I Hate Talking: If you have someone that's 4 ft.
- 5:47I Hate Talking: The person that's 42 is the next smallest.
- 5:52I Hate Talking: Yes, you're ranking things, yeah, but that's not what they're getting at.
- 5:56I Hate Talking: They're getting at you cut it in half and then you cut it in half again.
- 5:59I Hate Talking: Yes, and actually the way that they would have literally said that is that the division of an hour.
- 6:07I Hate Talking: I Literally 1st minute, which would be 1 minute, and then 2nd minute, which is seconds.
- 6:14I Hate Talking: Which is probably why it came to be developed as minutes and seconds because that is confusing if you just said.
- 6:20I Hate Talking: There's 31st minutes in an hour.
- 6:24I Hate Talking: -- And -- there's no, there's 60 minutes in an hour.
- 6:29I Hate Talking: Oh yeah, see, I'm even confusing myself.
- 6:31I Hate Talking: -- And then -- there's 60.
- 6:32I Hate Talking: Seconds in a minute.
- 6:34I Hate Talking: -- So it's so confusing to say's -- 62nd minutes in a minute.
- 6:40I Hate Talking: In a first minute.
- 6:42I Hate Talking: Yes, there's 602 minutes in a first minute, and there's 61st minutes in an hour.
- 6:48I Hate Talking: I think we're so confused and I'm sure everyone driving right now, whatever they're doing is confused too.
- 6:54I Hate Talking: So, OK, there's 60 minutes in an hour.
- 6:59I Hate Talking: We all agree on that, right?
- 7:01I Hate Talking: And, and in the Latin 61st minutes.
- 7:04I Hate Talking: Oh man.
- 7:05I Hate Talking: And then there are 60 seconds in a minute.
- 7:12I Hate Talking: Or in the Latin, there are 62nd minutes in.
- 7:17I Hate Talking: One first minute.
- 7:19I Hate Talking: Oh man.
- 7:21I Hate Talking: So they're saying a minute, and then they're dividing that.
- 7:24I Hate Talking: Is it sort of, it reminds me of cousins, the whole like, you're my first cousin, you're my second cousin once removed, and how it's hard to track all that.
- 7:34I Hate Talking: That's what it makes me think of, or it's like 1 minute, a 2nd minute.
- 7:39I Hate Talking: Right, and they, like I said, apparently have never divided.
- 7:44I Hate Talking: Seconds into.
- 7:46I Hate Talking: An additional 60 increments because that would be like.
- 7:50I Hate Talking: Is that nanosecond?
- 7:52I Hate Talking: No, because they would have, if they had a need to do that, would have divided by 60 again.
- 7:57I Hate Talking: Because they're using base 60 for time, and that would be Tertius.
- 8:02I Hate Talking: OK.
- 8:04I Hate Talking: 3rd, and what is a nanosecond?
- 8:07I Hate Talking: A nanosecond is a metric division of a second where they are taking 1 2nd and dividing that by a billion, is that right?
- 8:21I Hate Talking: Yes, 1 billionth of a second.
- 8:23I Hate Talking: Can you give us an example of that?
- 8:26I Hate Talking: According to Wikipedia, a nanosecond is to 1 2nd, as 1 2nd is to approximately 31.69 years.
- 8:33I Hate Talking: A microsecond is 1/1000 of a second, so it's faster than it's even taking a breath.
- 8:41I Hate Talking: Again, quick.
- 8:42I Hate Talking: Right, and that's why people in the 13th century would not have needed to talk in even microseconds, let alone nanoseconds.
- 8:50I Hate Talking: OK, can I get deep for a minute?
- 8:53I Hate Talking: OK.
- 8:53I Hate Talking: Why do we need to now then if they don't back then?
- 8:58I Hate Talking: So with more advanced scientific methods and especially computing and things like that where we're measuring electrical currents and circuit boards and things like that, that there is a need to go down to that level of granularity to be able to program things and understand.
- 9:18I Hate Talking: Mostly probably electrical type devices.
- 9:21I Hate Talking: Mm.
- 9:23I Hate Talking: So like, maybe when they send a rocket into space.
- 9:30I Hate Talking: That has to be that precise.
- 9:32I Hate Talking: I'm like in my real everyday life, I don't need it, right?
- 9:38I Hate Talking: Probably not, though, you use devices that are built on science that uses nanoseconds, so computing, telecommunications.
- 9:49I Hate Talking: I wonder, it reminds me of, we've talked about how we've moved recently and we used to live in the country and now we live in a city in suburbia, outside the city.
- 10:04I Hate Talking: I am shocked at how fast the Internet is, which sounds insane.
- 10:11I Hate Talking: I feel like a mill.
- 10:14I Hate Talking: Midi, what do you call it?
- 10:16I Hate Talking: Medieval, medieval.
- 10:19I Hate Talking: I feel like a medieval person almost.
- 10:21I Hate Talking: If I can exaggerate, because the Internet is so quick.
- 10:26I Hate Talking: And I forget now if we're not at home using our home internet, and I'm just using my cellular internet on my phone, how slow it is.
- 10:38I Hate Talking: But there was a time when we lived at our old home that my internet was the fastest out of everything, and we used mine when we had to do something quick.
- 10:48I Hate Talking: Now I am annoyed when I'm not at home and I have to wait for my phone to load.
- 10:55I Hate Talking: But it's not slower, it's just I got so used to it being immediate.
- 11:01I Hate Talking: Um, perhaps I think it actually is a little bit slower.
- 11:04I Hate Talking: I think we actually maybe had better cell service at the old property versus here.
- 11:09I Hate Talking: So you're saying that like, so I have AT&T for my phone.
- 11:12I Hate Talking: So AT&T at our old home was faster than it is here?
- 11:17I Hate Talking: I think so, and I have Verizon, and I think that has the same experience.
- 11:22I Hate Talking: So we just might not be as close to a cell tower or we're now in a more populated area, so more people have more devices connected to the cell network.
- 11:32I Hate Talking: -- But -- do you notice that your home internet, if you're on the home Wi Fi, it's much faster than your cell?
- 11:39I Hate Talking: Yeah, why is that then?
- 11:41I Hate Talking: That was not the case at home.
- 11:44I Hate Talking: If we needed anything quick, we had to go onto our cell phones or even do our hotspots on our cell phones.
- 11:52I Hate Talking: Right, well, I'm saying that, yes, our internet is faster here, home internet.
- 11:57I Hate Talking: And it is faster than the cell service, but I'm saying that the cell service at the old property was better than cell service here.
- 12:06I Hate Talking: I'll believe you.
- 12:09I Hate Talking: I don't know if that's true, but I feel like I just got used to.
- 12:12I Hate Talking: Immediate response.
- 12:16I Hate Talking: Maybe, I believe you.
- 12:18I Hate Talking: Right?
- 12:19I Hate Talking: And then our old internet at our old property was still slow even after upgrading it.
- 12:24I Hate Talking: Remember how slow it was even before we had that upgrade?
- 12:27I Hate Talking: Yes, um, yes, I do.
- 12:31I Hate Talking: We used to only be able to watch one movie.
- 12:34I Hate Talking: A month on our cell service or on our Wi Fi at home.
- 12:39I Hate Talking: Before it went to like a crawling, buffering, constant speed.
- 12:44I Hate Talking: We could watch one full movie, maybe 1.5.
- 12:48I Hate Talking: And we were done for the month.
- 12:51I Hate Talking: And we had family visit and they always kind of joked about how insane it was that we lived so far in the country that this was an issue.
- 13:01I Hate Talking: And then they came and visited after the upgrade and they were shocked.
- 13:05I Hate Talking: And again, they admitted that this is not good, it still wasn't good, but it was significantly better than.
- 13:14I Hate Talking: What we had cuz we could watch.
- 13:17I Hate Talking: I don't want to exaggerate.
- 13:19I Hate Talking: What did you say?
- 13:20I Hate Talking: Maybe 34 movies without buffering?
- 13:23I Hate Talking: Right.
- 13:24I Hate Talking: Well, there was a certain allotment that you were guaranteed the higher speed and then it would slow down after that.
- 13:31I Hate Talking: -- So -- yes.
- 13:32I Hate Talking: Yeah, 12, maybe 3.
- 13:36I Hate Talking: Yes, even they noticed they were like, wow, what happened?
- 13:40I Hate Talking: This is so quick.
- 13:41I Hate Talking: I'm like.
- 13:42I Hate Talking: It got upgraded, even then we all knew this wasn't good.
- 13:47I Hate Talking: It wasn't a great service, but.
- 13:50I Hate Talking: It was infinitely better.
- 13:53I Hate Talking: And so, yeah, just the, how quick we get used to upgrades, because then we started getting annoyed at the upgrade.
- 14:01I Hate Talking: And we'd have to remind ourselves this is so much better than it was.
- 14:05I Hate Talking: That's true, and there's a use of milliseconds because You not only measure your download speed and your upload speed, but also your ping.
- 14:17I Hate Talking: That's basically how fast you are getting responses from the server.
- 14:22I Hate Talking: And right now I just did a speed test on our home Wi Fi at our new house and it is 14 milliseconds, which is pretty good.
- 14:31I Hate Talking: After our upgrade at our old property, we would maybe get like.
- 14:36I Hate Talking: 200, maybe up to 500, 600 on a bad day, but before the upgrade, we would consistently get 1000 millisecond pings, which is terrible.
- 14:48I Hate Talking: I, I never quite knew what I was looking at, but you'd occasionally have me check the speed of the internet, and I would, if I knew the ratio of a good day versus bad day.
- 15:01I Hate Talking: I didn't quite understand it.
- 15:03I Hate Talking: So you're saying that you're getting 14 right now.
- 15:07I Hate Talking: 14 milliseconds, yes, -- and -- we used to get like 1000, 1000.
- 15:13I Hate Talking: OK.
- 15:14I Hate Talking: And then when it's that slow, you might not even measure it in milliseconds.
- 15:18I Hate Talking: It might as well be in seconds because that is over 1 2nd paying time.
- 15:22I Hate Talking: And what, how many milliseconds?
- 15:23I Hate Talking: I know you told us earlier, a millisecond is how many seconds?
- 15:27I Hate Talking: I did not say that earlier because we were talking about microseconds.
- 15:30I Hate Talking: 00, milliseconds is 1/1000 of a second.
- 15:35I Hate Talking: Is a micro More or less than a male.
- 15:40I Hate Talking: 2nd.
- 15:42I Hate Talking: microsecond is Much smaller, it is 1 million of a second.
- 15:48I Hate Talking: OK, so a microsecond, then millisecond, then 2.
- 15:53I Hate Talking: From small to large, yes.
- 15:56I Hate Talking: And Talk to me like I'm a 5 year old.
- 16:00I Hate Talking: What are we talking about right now?
- 16:01I Hate Talking: For ping measurements, milliseconds.
- 16:06I Hate Talking: The smallest or second smallest.
- 16:08I Hate Talking: Well, if you go by Latin terms, it would be The 3rd smallest of an hour.
- 16:15I Hate Talking: OK.
- 16:16I Hate Talking: So not the smallest, smallest, but.
- 16:20I Hate Talking: The 3rd smallest.
- 16:22I Hate Talking: Well, when you have the metric system, you can go as small as you want.
- 16:24I Hate Talking: But I don't.
- 16:27I Hate Talking: I'm trying to follow this micro and.
- 16:30I Hate Talking: See, I would go in the Latin order.
- 16:34I Hate Talking: I would go from largest to smallest, not the other way around.
- 16:37I Hate Talking: OK, -- and lead me through -- this.
- 16:39I Hate Talking: Hour, minute, second, millisecond, microsecond, nanosecond.
- 16:43I Hate Talking: And there might be some descriptions in between there.
- 16:46I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 16:47I Hate Talking: And our internet is in the ping is in milliseconds, which is the 3rd.
- 16:54I Hate Talking: Yes, hour, minute.
- 16:57I Hate Talking: 2nd millisecond, 4th.
- 17:00I Hate Talking: No, a minute is the 1st.
- 17:02I Hate Talking: OK, well, -- you said our first -- from our Latin friends.
- 17:06I Hate Talking: Hours 0, minute is 1st, second is 2nd, as we were talking about at the beginning of the episode, and then milliseconds would be 3rd.
- 17:16I Hate Talking: Right, OK, I believe that.
- 17:18I Hate Talking: All right.
- 17:19I Hate Talking: And how many milliseconds are in a second?
- 17:24I Hate Talking: 1000.
- 17:25I Hate Talking: So it takes at our old home, it took 1 2nd.
- 17:30I Hate Talking: To upload something.
- 17:32I Hate Talking: No, it took 1 2nd to just ping the other end of the internet to say, hey, we have some, something that we want you to download or upload.
- 17:41I Hate Talking: So I say, dear Google, what is a millisecond?
- 17:45I Hate Talking: Send, and then it takes one Mississippi.
- 17:48I Hate Talking: For it to let it know that I asked a question.
- 17:52I Hate Talking: Right, and then it has to respond back and say, what is your question?
- 17:56I Hate Talking: And then it has to upload the question and it has to download the answer.
- 18:00I Hate Talking: So that's part of the reason it was so slow, not only the upload and download speeds, but the extra time just to Acknowledge the communication back and forth between systems, which is why my internet seems so fast now because instead of saying one Mississippi.
- 18:15I Hate Talking: Here's my question.
- 18:18I Hate Talking: Now I just say, instead of saying, hey Google, what is a millisecond?
- 18:23I Hate Talking: It doesn't say one Mississippi to get there, so what is there.
- 18:28I Hate Talking: Yes, that's a very scientific way of describing it, I suppose.
- 18:32I Hate Talking: Good.
- 18:33I Hate Talking: All right.
- 18:34I Hate Talking: I learned a lot today, thank you.
- 18:36I Hate Talking: Hopefully, no one else is confused.
- 18:38I Hate Talking: I was super confused, but I think I'm on the right track.
- 18:40I Hate Talking: Over, hopefully everyone else is on that same track now too.
- 18:44I Hate Talking: Well, that does, I guess, give some credence to the metric system and describing time in terms of divisions of 10s and hundreds and thousands instead of 60, where you're talking about.
- 18:59I Hate Talking: The first part, the 2nd part, and so on.
- 19:04I Hate Talking: So I know you hate, you've mentioned before that you hate the base 10 system.
- 19:09I Hate Talking: Do you prefer the 60 system?
- 19:12I Hate Talking: I think just because it is so ingrained in our society that It's fine.
- 19:19I Hate Talking: Phase 10.
- 19:20I Hate Talking: No, be 60.
- 19:22I Hate Talking: 60.
- 19:23I Hate Talking: So then why do you hate base 10?
- 19:26I Hate Talking: The same reason, because miles and feet and inches are so ingrained in our everyday conversation and culture that that is how we just do things, and it's relatively well understood.
- 19:42I Hate Talking: Like even just something simple where a speed limit would be stated in kilometers per hour.
- 19:47I Hate Talking: It is not something that is intuitive because we've used MPH for all of our lives.
- 19:54I Hate Talking: We have a child.
- 19:56I Hate Talking: Oh, I love him.
- 19:58I Hate Talking: He has decided that he hates Fahrenheit.
- 20:03I Hate Talking: And only talks in Celsius.
- 20:06I Hate Talking: Which is great Except for it is a very obvious when somebody says something here in America, we always talk in Fahrenheit.
- 20:17I Hate Talking: And he will react as if it's Celsius.
- 20:21I Hate Talking: And I tell him you can't do that, buddy like.
- 20:24I Hate Talking: I understand you prefer Celsius, but we live in a Fahrenheit world, and he refuses.
- 20:30I Hate Talking: Someone says something about temperature.
- 20:32I Hate Talking: If they say like, what's the temp like, how hot is that?
- 20:36I Hate Talking: Meat coming out of the oven.
- 20:38I Hate Talking: He'll give it to you in Celsius, as if it's a fact.
- 20:42I Hate Talking: It's like you can't, this is not the world you can do that in.
- 20:45I Hate Talking: And it is um.
- 20:48I Hate Talking: Sweet and obnoxious, and he hates Fahrenheit and he refuses to live in a Fahrenheit world.
- 20:55I Hate Talking: Yeah, I mean, it's been more of an issue recently where our weather has been all over the place, and I think that's true for most of the US right now that there's hot days and cold days.
- 21:07I Hate Talking: So when you say it's 40 degrees out, it could be that it's 40 °F, probably not so likely 40 °C, but maybe.
- 21:18I Hate Talking: Yes, and the weather, maybe a better example would be like.
- 21:22I Hate Talking: 20 degrees.
- 21:24I Hate Talking: 20 degrees has been probably not in the last month or so, but It has been 20 °C in the last few.
- 21:32I Hate Talking: Yeah, yeah, that's Celsius for us, yes, um, Fahrenheit, no, but it is obnoxious cause we'll be like, what's the weather like?
- 21:43I Hate Talking: I'm like, it's gonna be 65.
- 21:46I Hate Talking: And he's like, Celsius, oh man, it's gonna be so hot.
- 21:52I Hate Talking: You know, I mean Fahrenheit.
- 21:56I Hate Talking: It's 65 °F.
- 21:59I Hate Talking: It's a very pleasant day outside.
- 22:02I Hate Talking: Right, I don't think it's 149 °F outside.
- 22:06I Hate Talking: Yes, and I I think it's a bit he's doing, but it's starting to get old, cuz I can't convince him that we live.
- 22:18I Hate Talking: He tries to tell me all the perks of Celsius over Fahrenheit, and I believe him.
- 22:24I Hate Talking: But we live in a Fahrenheit world, so he needs to accept it.
- 22:30I Hate Talking: Or we could just start doing everything in Kelvin.
- 22:34I Hate Talking: No, no We're gonna do our own.
- 22:37I Hate Talking: Can we just make up our own family?
- 22:40I Hate Talking: Measurement, I suppose so.
- 22:44I Hate Talking: Anything is possible.
- 22:45I Hate Talking: Um, I think Yale.
- 22:48I Hate Talking: OK, this might be false, cause I'm a Gilmore Girls fan, so I haven't googled it, you can if you want.
- 22:58I Hate Talking: But in Gilmore Girls, they go to Yale, and it's a big part of the storyline is called the Yale.
- 23:07I Hate Talking: University culture.
- 23:10I Hate Talking: Measurement based on a certain child, like a certain student that went there.
- 23:15I Hate Talking: Uh, I forget what.
- 23:18I Hate Talking: His name is at the time, but that's how they measure everything is by this one individual's height.
- 23:24I Hate Talking: So should we just do that?
- 23:27I Hate Talking: So it wasn't a temperature unit for Yale.
- 23:28I Hate Talking: I was just searching for Yale temperature.
- 23:30I Hate Talking: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 23:31I Hate Talking: I'm kind of going back and forth.
- 23:33I Hate Talking: I get it from minutes to temperature to now length.
- 23:38I Hate Talking: Did you find anything, or is it a Gilmore Girls lore?
- 23:44I Hate Talking: There's a MIT.
- 23:47I Hate Talking: One Not finding anything on Yale.
- 23:51I Hate Talking: But This may be related.
- 23:57I Hate Talking: Maybe you're not remembering if it's Yale or MIT.
- 24:00I Hate Talking: No, it's definitely Yale.
- 24:02I Hate Talking: She goes to Yale, the parents go to Yale.
- 24:04I Hate Talking: So maybe they stole it from MIT because MIT has a smoot, which is where a particular person laid down repeatedly on the Harvard Bridge.
- 24:16I Hate Talking: And they used his height to measure the length of the bridge.
- 24:20I Hate Talking: And that was in 1958.
- 24:24I Hate Talking: They were doing silly things like that.
- 24:26I Hate Talking: OK, no, it wasn't, it's not smooth, a cropog.
- 24:32I Hate Talking: It's a fictional unit of measurement in Gilmore Girls.
- 24:36I Hate Talking: So, OK, it's fictional, fictional, but it could have borrowed from the true story of MIT because Gilmore Girls came after a smoot in 1958.
- 24:48I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 24:49I Hate Talking: Supposedly it comes from class of 1944.
- 24:54I Hate Talking: But it is fictional and humorous, apparently.
- 24:58I Hate Talking: Acropog is what suppose in Gilmore Girls' world, how they measure length.
- 25:05I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 25:07I Hate Talking: So yes, I suppose we can make our own temperature units if we so desire.
- 25:11I Hate Talking: Yeah, Gilmore Girls does it.
- 25:13I Hate Talking: The America's do it, so we should.
- 25:18I Hate Talking: The Americas, I don't know, it's like the one thing that we kept from Britain.
- 25:23I Hate Talking: What?
- 25:27I Hate Talking: You don't do kilometers in Britain.
- 25:29I Hate Talking: Commoners?
- 25:31I Hate Talking: What is commoners?
- 25:32I Hate Talking: It's so late, kilometers.
- 25:37I Hate Talking: I thought you were referring to our imperial units as the commoners units.
- 25:42I Hate Talking: Kilometers, kilometers.
- 25:46I Hate Talking: Well, they do now Yes, but the imperial system was officially established by the British Weights and Measures Act of 1824.
- 25:57I Hate Talking: OK, can you, OK, we're running late, we gotta finish this up quick, but tell me, super fast.
- 26:04I Hate Talking: Um Britain made our system, we took it here to America and they changed and we stuck with it.
- 26:15I Hate Talking: Yes, apparently in 1965, the Federation of British Industry told the British government that they wanted the metric system.
- 26:24I Hate Talking: And The government agreed and supported a 10-year.
- 26:30I Hate Talking: Quote unquote, metrification program.
- 26:34I Hate Talking: And then in The rest is history.
- 26:37I Hate Talking: So our numbers came from that, correct.
- 26:40I Hate Talking: So it's like when we use their, and we call it the dollar, but if we use their Pound pound.
- 26:49I Hate Talking: And how like they still use the pound, but they also take the euro in most places.
- 26:57I Hate Talking: If they get rid of the pound completely, it's that kind of idea.
- 27:00I Hate Talking: Yes Hm Why I don't want to talk bad about our British friends or our allies.
- 27:12I Hate Talking: Well, now they are, I think.
- 27:14I Hate Talking: But Why did they change?
- 27:20I Hate Talking: Cause in history, it makes it sound like they're like, this is the way it is, and we're not gonna change, and y'all are our people.
- 27:27I Hate Talking: But they do change They did change, yeah, in 1965 from their imperial system, which the imperial system wasn't really theirs to begin with.
- 27:37I Hate Talking: It was more of the standardization of all the things that they Gained from all their different.
- 27:45I Hate Talking: Things that they were doing across the globe similar to how English has a lot of words that are from many different countries and cultures.
- 27:54I Hate Talking: They took all their measurement systems and consolidated it and standardized standardized it into the imperial system.
- 28:01I Hate Talking: -- And then we -- got stuck with it.
- 28:03I Hate Talking: And we're not gonna change because America is too big and too divided as it is.
- 28:11I Hate Talking: We're just stuck with this now.
- 28:13I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 28:13I Hate Talking: I'll be happy if they changed daily savings time, but if we ever went to the metric system, I probably wouldn't be as opposed as I used to be.
- 28:20I Hate Talking: I think it is.
- 28:21I Hate Talking: Have its benefits Yeah, theoretically, I'm not opposed.
- 28:27I Hate Talking: But I am because I just don't want to learn something new.
- 28:32I Hate Talking: I suppose that's true.
- 28:36I Hate Talking: It took us 30 minutes to talk about what a microsecond and nanosecond is.
- 28:43I Hate Talking: Indeed, All right.
- 28:46I Hate Talking: I'll just keep with how we're doing things now.
- 28:50I Hate Talking: Well, there you go.
- 28:52I Hate Talking: So this episode should be about half an hour.
- 28:55I Hate Talking: Or 30 minutes.
- 28:58I Hate Talking: 1st minutes.
- 29:00I Hate Talking: 31st 31st minutes.
- 29:03I Hate Talking: It's 60 x 30.
- 29:06I Hate Talking: There would be 1802nd minutes.
- 29:09I Hate Talking: There's 3600 seconds in an hour.
- 29:12I Hate Talking: So 1300 milliseconds.
- 29:17I Hate Talking: Or 2 seconds, 2nd minutes.
- 29:21I Hate Talking: Half an hour.
- 29:22I Hate Talking: 31st minutes 1802nd minutes, AKA seconds.
- 29:27I Hate Talking: That's why we don't use those phrases.
- 29:32I Hate Talking: We just talk hours, minutes, seconds.
- 29:34I Hate Talking: It takes so long to say it.
