- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Parent Data by Emily Oster. I'm Emily, and
- 0:08Speaker 1: today I'm thrilled to share the audio from an event
- 0:11Speaker 1: we held earlier this month to mark the ten year
- 0:13Speaker 1: anniversary of my first book, Expecting Better. It was hosted
- 0:17Speaker 1: by the Vagina Whisperer herself, Sarah Rden, and we were
- 0:20Speaker 1: joined by a very special guest, the one and only
- 0:22Speaker 1: Amy Schumer, who helped put the book on the map,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and we announced my new book, which is coming out
- 0:28Speaker 1: next spring. It was an amazing evening and I hope
- 0:30Speaker 1: you will enjoy listening to it as much as we
- 0:32Speaker 1: enjoyed hosting it.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Here's Sarah to start us off.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Good evening, everyone, Thank you so much for joining us today.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I am so excited to be joining you as the
- 0:45Speaker 3: host for this event to celebrate Emily Oster in ten
- 0:48Speaker 3: years of her book Expecting Better. We are going to
- 0:51Speaker 3: be talking tonight about how to move conversations and our
- 0:55Speaker 3: culture forward when we talk about what to expect during pregnancy.
- 0:59Speaker 3: To introduce myself, I'm Sarah Reardan, a pelvic floor physical therapist,
- 1:04Speaker 3: and I'm also known on Instagram as the Vagina Whisperer,
- 1:08Speaker 3: where I created a space to have pelvic floor conversations,
- 1:12Speaker 3: and I often do it in a vulvasuit, so to
- 1:18Speaker 3: get started. I also am curious as to how many
- 1:21Speaker 3: of you all have read Expecting Better. I know a
- 1:23Speaker 3: lot of folks here are pregnant and have a baby
- 1:26Speaker 3: on the way, so if you haven't yet checked into
- 1:29Speaker 3: the poll, please do so. So over eighty two percent
- 1:34Speaker 3: of y'all, so lots of you have read the book.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I remember reading this book when I was pregnant with
- 1:39Speaker 3: my son over eight years ago, and one of the
- 1:43Speaker 3: biggest takeaways was I remember feeling very grateful. I felt
- 1:47Speaker 3: like I had a guide during my pregnancy that made
- 1:50Speaker 3: me feel less of a porcelain doll and more of
- 1:53Speaker 3: an empowered and informed mom to be. And I am
- 1:56Speaker 3: so grateful that Emily has put so much into this
- 1:58Speaker 3: resource that I think has held so many of us
- 2:01Speaker 3: during that pregnancy period. We have thousands of people who
- 2:05Speaker 3: registered and are here for this event tonight, and folks
- 2:08Speaker 3: are still coming in so as we're waiting for them
- 2:11Speaker 3: to join us, I'd love to do another poll so
- 2:13Speaker 3: we can get to know who is here in the
- 2:15Speaker 3: community tonight, So all of you here, I would love
- 2:19Speaker 3: to know who is pregnant or trying to conceive, and
- 2:23Speaker 3: I'll wait a second for that to come on in.
- 2:27Speaker 3: As we wait for those results, I am going to
- 2:31Speaker 3: talk a little bit about what you can expect for tonight.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Oh look at that fifty almost fifty percent of y'all
- 2:39Speaker 3: are currently pregnant. I love this. So this is going
- 2:42Speaker 3: to be such a special opportunity for us to get
- 2:45Speaker 3: to chat with Emily about why she created this book
- 2:48Speaker 3: so long ago and just learn more about her process
- 2:51Speaker 3: in writing it. So tonight's going to be really special
- 2:54Speaker 3: for a number of reasons. First, we're going to get
- 2:56Speaker 3: to hear from Emily about why this moment means a
- 3:01Speaker 3: lot to her ten years later of expecting better. Then
- 3:05Speaker 3: Amy Schumer is going to join us to have a
- 3:07Speaker 3: conversation with Emily to talk about pregnancy and why these
- 3:11Speaker 3: conversations are so important. And you're going to want to
- 3:14Speaker 3: make sure you stay until the very end because Emily
- 3:16Speaker 3: has a really big announcement that you're not going to
- 3:18Speaker 3: want to miss, So don't tune off early. You're going
- 3:20Speaker 3: to want to stay till the very end to hear that.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And finally, some of you in this community are going
- 3:25Speaker 3: to get to ask your pregnancy questions live to Emily.
- 3:28Speaker 3: So at the end of this you're going to get
- 3:29Speaker 3: to ask your questions and you won't want to miss that.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Make sure to stick around to the end. And before
- 3:35Speaker 3: I go any further, I think it's time to bring
- 3:37Speaker 3: on our guest of the evening, Emily Aster.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I Amie.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I am so grateful for you to be here. And
- 3:51Speaker 1: I also just want to say before we get started,
- 3:54Speaker 1: I'm a little overwhelmed and a little nervous, but also
- 3:58Speaker 1: just incredibly grateful to everybody.
- 4:00Speaker 2: For coming to this and for all the things that
- 4:04Speaker 2: came before.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I'm grateful to you guys for reading the book and
- 4:07Speaker 1: for sharing the book, and for telling me what you
- 4:10Speaker 1: liked and telling me what you didn't like, and all
- 4:13Speaker 1: of those pieces like this community, this experience. It really
- 4:17Speaker 1: changed my life and I feel like now I'm doing
- 4:20Speaker 1: the thing I'm supposed to do and.
- 4:21Speaker 2: It's I don't know, it's just I'm just really grateful.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So so thank you, thank you, And let's talk about vaginas.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Let's do our favorite topic, our favorite topic.
- 4:33Speaker 2: We love it. I'm sorry you're not wearing the suit.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Where's this? So?
- 4:38Speaker 5: Well?
- 4:38Speaker 3: Let this night is about you. So let's talk about
- 4:41Speaker 3: expecting better and just take us back. What made you
- 4:43Speaker 3: a decade ago decide to write this book.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So I'll tell you the short answer that I often
- 4:50Speaker 1: give people, which is true, which is I got pregnant
- 4:53Speaker 1: and I had the experience that I think it turns
- 4:56Speaker 1: out many people had, which is I was given a
- 4:57Speaker 1: set of instructions.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I was given like a little piece a paper, list
- 5:00Speaker 2: of rules. I was given a lot of one size
- 5:03Speaker 2: fits all advice, and it wasn't working for me.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And my training is as an economist, is in data,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and I started using that data in the service of
- 5:14Speaker 1: my own of my own pregnancy and spending a lot
- 5:17Speaker 1: of time in the medical literature trying to figure out
- 5:19Speaker 1: the answers to these questions. And so that's really an
- 5:22Speaker 1: answer to why I did the research that informed the book,
- 5:25Speaker 1: essentially not totally an answer to why I wrote the book,
- 5:28Speaker 1: because there is a long way between like messing around
- 5:32Speaker 1: with messing around with spreadsheets on your computer and like
- 5:36Speaker 1: actually writing a book. And in some ways the answer
- 5:41Speaker 1: to why I turned this into a book is just
- 5:43Speaker 1: that I felt like I had to, Like I just
- 5:46Speaker 1: it's like it had to come out like when you're
- 5:49Speaker 1: motion sick or something like. I just I felt that
- 5:52Speaker 1: so frustrated and overwhelmed by this. It was just like,
- 5:55Speaker 1: I have to put this out because it can't be
- 5:57Speaker 1: that I'm the only one like this. I can't be
- 5:59Speaker 1: the only person who doesn't think this is the way
- 6:01Speaker 1: this should go. And the book sort of flowed really
- 6:04Speaker 1: from that feeling of like, nah, I have to do it, which, yeah,
- 6:11Speaker 1: so that's the answer, That's why I did it.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Motion sickness a form of motion sickness.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Well, we are grateful for it, because, as you can see,
- 6:18Speaker 3: I mean, tens and thousands and so many other expecting
- 6:22Speaker 3: moms have read this. And I think that the fact
- 6:25Speaker 3: that ten years later this book is still so relevant
- 6:27Speaker 3: and so popular just says so much about how much
- 6:30Speaker 3: we need this information and we continue to need it.
- 6:33Speaker 3: That you're still moving the needle forward with the information
- 6:36Speaker 3: that you're providing. So I know that we are just
- 6:38Speaker 3: as grateful for you and having taken the time to
- 6:42Speaker 3: do that and help so many other moms along the way.
- 6:45Speaker 3: So too, again, eighty percent of the folks who are
- 6:47Speaker 3: here tonight have read this book. What do you want
- 6:49Speaker 3: to say to them or anyone who's here who's read
- 6:52Speaker 3: the book or shared a book that shared the book,
- 6:54Speaker 3: is there anything that you would want to say to them?
- 6:59Speaker 1: I think that sometimes when I talk about this book
- 7:01Speaker 1: with people, I want them to understand that it's a
- 7:03Speaker 1: I think of it as a tool, Like.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So there is a.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Lot in the book about like, here is the evidence
- 7:11Speaker 1: on this, here are the facts.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Here is the data, and you should be using this.
- 7:16Speaker 1: You can use this to make some decisions about your
- 7:19Speaker 1: own pregnancy, which is different from this is how you
- 7:24Speaker 1: should do it. And so there's a sort of moment
- 7:26Speaker 1: sometimes when I talk to people and they say, well,
- 7:29Speaker 1: what did you do for that, like did you eat
- 7:31Speaker 1: sushi when you were pregnant? Like, I'm happy to tell
- 7:33Speaker 1: you that I hate sushi when I'm pregnant. I mean,
- 7:34Speaker 1: I'll tell people anything like I'm you know, I'm talking
- 7:37Speaker 1: about vaginas all the time.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And an open book.
- 7:39Speaker 1: But actually it shouldn't matter if I eat sushi during
- 7:43Speaker 1: pregnant pregnancy. What I'm trying to do with the book
- 7:45Speaker 1: is say, here is the evidence. Here's why you might
- 7:47Speaker 1: want to think about avoiding it. Here's why you're toold
- 7:49Speaker 1: to avoid it, Here's what the data says about that,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and then you make the choice for yourself. And that's
- 7:54Speaker 1: a really important distinction that goes across expecting better and
- 7:57Speaker 1: everything else that I do is this idea that we
- 8:00Speaker 1: should be empowered to make the choices for ourselves.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And that was the frustrating piece for me.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And maybe that's like a way to that's a way
- 8:08Speaker 1: to say it, like I was frustrated by not being
- 8:11Speaker 1: able to make the choice, not.
- 8:14Speaker 2: That I was frustrated because I couldn't eat sushi.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And that distinction is pretty important, and that's kind of
- 8:19Speaker 1: what I'm trying to help people with in the book,
- 8:22Speaker 1: more than giving them permission for their deli sandwiches or
- 8:26Speaker 1: tuna subs or whatever that was for me, tuna.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Sub Yeah, well it's coffee for me, So I thank you.
- 8:32Speaker 3: I think a lot of us say thank you for
- 8:34Speaker 3: that that we should have coffee still, And I think
- 8:37Speaker 3: that that's the thing is that I think what you're
- 8:38Speaker 3: really doing is you're giving us options. It's not this
- 8:42Speaker 3: one way to do things. It's giving us all of
- 8:44Speaker 3: the information and helping us feel I think the word
- 8:46Speaker 3: that sticks out is really empowered during this process. So
- 8:49Speaker 3: I think more than anything. That's something that we often
- 8:51Speaker 3: feel like we are a passenger in the process versus
- 8:54Speaker 3: the driver. And I think that this book has really
- 8:56Speaker 3: allowed us to feel like we are leading our own way.
- 8:58Speaker 3: So did you ever think that when you wrote this
- 9:02Speaker 3: ten years ago that ten years later this book would
- 9:04Speaker 3: still resonate with so many people.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I had like no expectations.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I mean, I had never done this before, and so
- 9:10Speaker 1: I didn't know what would happen.
- 9:12Speaker 2: But I think one of the things that is true,
- 9:14Speaker 2: and this sort of gets.
- 9:15Speaker 1: At what you were saying, is the experience of being
- 9:18Speaker 1: pregnant is very consistent, Like he's very shared. It was
- 9:23Speaker 1: a very shared and hard to explain experience of what
- 9:27Speaker 1: it is like to like make another person. And some
- 9:31Speaker 1: of it is a feeling of like being lost a
- 9:33Speaker 1: little bit, and some of it is a feeling of
- 9:35Speaker 1: like being scared.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And but it's shared.
- 9:38Speaker 1: And I think that's in some way why that's why,
- 9:40Speaker 1: maybe why some of the book has resonated, just that
- 9:43Speaker 1: this is this is an experience that's something we kind
- 9:46Speaker 1: of all I don't know, we kind of like everybody's
- 9:50Speaker 1: pregnancy is different, but the broad experience of being pregnant,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I think has a lot of I don't know, has
- 9:54Speaker 1: a lot of similarities.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Well, and you're helping us feel less scared, which is
- 9:59Speaker 3: pret pretty powerful during that experience, you know.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think anxiety, you know, for me,
- 10:05Speaker 1: so much of what I write comes like out of
- 10:08Speaker 1: my own anxiety. And so there's this There was this
- 10:12Speaker 1: moment at some point where someone like I was talking
- 10:15Speaker 1: to someone.
- 10:15Speaker 2: My husband was there, and she was like.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You must be the most relaxed pregnant person, and my
- 10:21Speaker 1: husband's like lost it. He was just like, are you kidding,
- 10:24Speaker 1: Like this is the least relaxed, Like this person so
- 10:26Speaker 1: not relaxed.
- 10:27Speaker 2: She wrote like an entire book about like how to
- 10:30Speaker 2: like try to relax more like this could not be
- 10:34Speaker 2: less relaxed. So I'm not relaxed, but I'm trying to
- 10:37Speaker 2: help you.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Relax, I know, well, and we're all trying to be
- 10:40Speaker 3: a little bit more relaxed. And it does help. I mean,
- 10:42Speaker 3: I think that these resources really do help. And again
- 10:45Speaker 3: it wasn't so much a prescription of hey, this is
- 10:47Speaker 3: what you should do. It was hey, these are your
- 10:49Speaker 3: options and kind of do what works for you.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I also think there's a piece of this which is
- 10:54Speaker 1: about like empowering people to have conversations, particularly when we
- 10:58Speaker 1: talk about some of these harder and even more medical
- 11:00Speaker 1: parts of pregnancy.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Like you know, I'm not a doctor.
- 11:03Speaker 1: We all know that, and some of these conversations do
- 11:06Speaker 1: really end up like have to be with your provider.
- 11:08Speaker 1: They can't just be something you decide on your own.
- 11:11Speaker 1: But coming into that conversation prepared to have it, prepared
- 11:15Speaker 1: to think about, you know, what are the things that
- 11:18Speaker 1: you want or what are the things you're worried about.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Giving people the.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Language to have that has seemed to me to be
- 11:23Speaker 1: an important part of what this delivers for at least
- 11:26Speaker 1: some you know, for at least some patients, because those
- 11:30Speaker 1: visits can be like scary and just and feel like
- 11:35Speaker 1: there's so much information and you don't know what it
- 11:36Speaker 1: is and you're not like ready to hear it.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I also think that it's helped. I mean, I've
- 11:41Speaker 3: been on both sides as a medical provider and as
- 11:43Speaker 3: a patient, but you're you're kind of pushing medical providers
- 11:46Speaker 3: to like step up their game a little bit.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Somebody was like, somebody was like, you, I want to
- 11:52Speaker 1: talk to some doctors, and one of them started their
- 11:54Speaker 1: question with like you must be the worst patient.
- 11:56Speaker 2: It was like a nice question, but it's like, yeah,
- 11:58Speaker 2: that sounds right, and I wouldn't want to treat me.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Let me come up with my list of questions. As
- 12:04Speaker 3: I I've brought some up to date materials for you
- 12:08Speaker 3: to review with me.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Well, so let's talk a little bit more about one
- 12:13Speaker 3: of yours and my favorite topics, which is vagina. So
- 12:16Speaker 3: this is kind of just opening up to because I
- 12:18Speaker 3: think what your book did and continues to do is
- 12:21Speaker 3: it really does help us have conversations. So but you know,
- 12:24Speaker 3: one of the reasons I think about a lot, and
- 12:26Speaker 3: as you and I you know, have kind of worked
- 12:27Speaker 3: together over some time, is like why don't people talk
- 12:31Speaker 3: about I would say Vagina's more like why don't we
- 12:34Speaker 3: talk about some of these things that people experience more often?
- 12:38Speaker 3: And how do we bring these conversations kind of you know,
- 12:42Speaker 3: up more often? And like is that do we need
- 12:44Speaker 3: more research? Do we need you know, more books? I mean,
- 12:47Speaker 3: what is it that kind of really helps continue to
- 12:49Speaker 3: elevate this conversation and push it forward?
- 12:52Speaker 1: I mean, I think the biggest thing for me is
- 12:55Speaker 1: just like people being willing to share their experiences part
- 13:00Speaker 1: of and and to not always make it so serious.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I think in some sense, like what I love most
- 13:06Speaker 1: about what you do in the public is like, and
- 13:09Speaker 1: I sort of joked, like I wish you were wearing
- 13:10Speaker 1: the vulvasuit, but like it is it adds an amount
- 13:14Speaker 1: of levity to like have something where it's like, hey,
- 13:17Speaker 1: we can talk about like what's the right way to
- 13:19Speaker 1: pee or what's the right way to give birth, and
- 13:21Speaker 1: we can do it without saying like, you know, this
- 13:24Speaker 1: is like let me draw you a diagram and you
- 13:26Speaker 1: know this is something to be ashamed about, or this
- 13:28Speaker 1: is something to only talk about with your doctor.
- 13:31Speaker 2: That we can sort of have these conversations.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And make like make them, make them fun, and that
- 13:38Speaker 1: takes away some of.
- 13:40Speaker 2: The stigma and some of the fear.
- 13:45Speaker 1: But I don't but I also think people are just like,
- 13:48Speaker 1: it's so people are so uncomfortable about you know, there's
- 13:53Speaker 1: so much shame, right like you peoplen't want to say
- 13:55Speaker 1: like I pee on myself when I run.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I just don't want to say that, even though it
- 13:58Speaker 2: happens to so many people.
- 14:00Speaker 1: They're just like, you don't want to say that out
- 14:01Speaker 1: loud because it's like who peas on themselves?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Almost everybody, A lot of people, A lot of people,
- 14:06Speaker 2: A lot of people do that.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, So I think that you're totally right, and
- 14:12Speaker 3: I want to continue to have more of these conversations
- 14:14Speaker 3: with you. But we have a very special guest here
- 14:17Speaker 3: who is going to jump in and ask you more questions.
- 14:20Speaker 3: So let's bring Amy Schumer on stage.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Woo, Hi, how are you hi?
- 14:30Speaker 1: Amy?
- 14:30Speaker 2: How are you good?
- 14:32Speaker 4: Hi?
- 14:33Speaker 5: Sarah?
- 14:33Speaker 4: Hey, Amy, Hi, Sarah good.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Thank you so much. You win for the most minimalist background.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Sarah, she's got a plant. Look at the plant we put.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Look at that plant thriving like all of us. It's
- 14:50Speaker 5: like your plant is one upping her plant.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I'd switch.
- 14:54Speaker 5: I'm so honored of the opportunity to be on here
- 14:57Speaker 5: with both of you. Thank you for having me. And
- 15:00Speaker 5: I came into Emily's work as a pregnant, as an
- 15:04Speaker 5: expectant mother, and it was just to me, it was
- 15:09Speaker 5: like the holy Grail. It was like this economist has
- 15:13Speaker 5: the facts, the real studies. It was just like what
- 15:15Speaker 5: you were like, just that somebody would sift through all
- 15:18Speaker 5: those you know, stormy waters for you and be real.
- 15:21Speaker 5: It was just such a gift, and I pass that
- 15:24Speaker 5: gift onto every every mother. I can I say I
- 15:28Speaker 5: read one book and I still yes, and then I
- 15:32Speaker 5: read Crip Sheet, of course.
- 15:34Speaker 1: So I have to say the reason I asked Amy,
- 15:37Speaker 1: the reason I asked you to be on here is,
- 15:38Speaker 1: of course, like your mom and you talk about your
- 15:39Speaker 1: vagina a lot, and that's so great, and you're funny.
- 15:42Speaker 2: So those are some things I like.
- 15:45Speaker 1: But also like you played actually pretty big role in
- 15:49Speaker 1: getting Expecting Better into the hands of a lot of people,
- 15:52Speaker 1: because in when you were pregnant with Gene, you posted
- 15:55Speaker 1: on Instagram and I remember this moment of like scrolling
- 15:57Speaker 1: through my Instagram in like the car and my kid,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, that's when I someone posted
- 16:02Speaker 1: the book. And then I was like, oh, it's Amy
- 16:03Speaker 1: Schumer and people were like and uh and it was great.
- 16:08Speaker 1: And actually we can see in the there's in the
- 16:11Speaker 1: data on who bought the book.
- 16:12Speaker 2: There's what we call the Amy Schumer bump. It's yeah,
- 16:16Speaker 2: I know, it's what we call its.
- 16:18Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 16:19Speaker 5: Well, then I guess I returned the favor of you, uh,
- 16:23Speaker 5: single handedly getting me through my pregnancy.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to keep with Sarah We're going to
- 16:29Speaker 2: kick Sarah off for a little bit.
- 16:30Speaker 3: You get out of here, keep chatting and I will
- 16:33Speaker 3: jump back in later. But have fun.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Okay, get your plant with you.
- 16:37Speaker 4: That's yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 5: What if the plant gets like significantly bigger throughout the night.
- 16:41Speaker 2: It would be amazing.
- 16:42Speaker 5: You came back, okay, So I yeah, I was trying
- 16:48Speaker 5: to remember, like at what moment I but you did
- 16:50Speaker 5: just say. I was listening to you too, and you
- 16:52Speaker 5: said that most people's pregnancies.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Are go through the same stuff, and I was like,
- 17:01Speaker 4: girl is not.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Uh yeah, I know, as you know, I had a
- 17:05Speaker 5: hyperamesis crevioderum, which is extreme nausea and vomiting. And so
- 17:10Speaker 5: just anyone listening who is extreme nausea and vomiting and
- 17:15Speaker 5: it's not getting better in the second trimester, you might
- 17:18Speaker 5: have that.
- 17:20Speaker 4: And don't be afraid aboutable marijuana. So now what I
- 17:22Speaker 4: want to ask you is, uh, why do you.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Think talking openly about people's pregnancy and their choices is
- 17:31Speaker 5: so important?
- 17:34Speaker 1: I mean, I think that a big part of this
- 17:36Speaker 1: is not feeling alone. And so even like the thing
- 17:38Speaker 1: you just said about hyperamess, like, there are a lot
- 17:41Speaker 1: of people who have that and when I talked to
- 17:43Speaker 1: people with that experience.
- 17:45Speaker 2: They will say.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Things like, you know, I had this condition and like hypermesis.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I mean, I don't have to tell you this BeForever
- 17:50Speaker 1: like it's really debilitating and it can be like extremely
- 17:53Speaker 1: medically dangerous. And it is a place where often people's
- 17:58Speaker 1: friends will be like, why don't have some saltines. So
- 18:01Speaker 1: somebody at some point told me, like my friend was like,
- 18:03Speaker 1: did you try saltines and ginger ale?
- 18:05Speaker 2: She was like, I got that text while I was
- 18:07Speaker 2: getting ivy fluids in the hospital.
- 18:10Speaker 1: And so I think it's sort of like there's an
- 18:12Speaker 1: aloneness of you know, even parts of even pregnancy is
- 18:14Speaker 1: going well, there's an aloneness, and when it's not going,
- 18:17Speaker 1: when things are complicated, there's even more. And so I
- 18:19Speaker 1: think the more we can surface, you know, the good parts,
- 18:23Speaker 1: but also that they're not good parts and normalize that,
- 18:26Speaker 1: the better it is for people being able to figure
- 18:30Speaker 1: out when they need help, you know, understanding that like
- 18:32Speaker 1: that's not a normal that's not a thing you treat with.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Like I know, but as you know, there's the medical
- 18:37Speaker 5: studies on pregnant women are so bad.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Yeah, but really I.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Just want to take the opportunity to again thank you,
- 18:44Speaker 5: because there's feeling alone, and then there's pregnancy feeling alone,
- 18:48Speaker 5: and you just have these expectations from everyone to just
- 18:53Speaker 5: be this like holy temple, and you know, and people
- 18:57Speaker 5: really forget about taking care of the vessel that the
- 18:59Speaker 5: baby is coming in, as you know, and your work
- 19:03Speaker 5: really reminds us that we're we're also human beings soon
- 19:08Speaker 5: need to be taken.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Care of and within reason, you know.
- 19:12Speaker 5: And I remember texting you at all hours just being
- 19:15Speaker 5: like can I have sushi?
- 19:17Speaker 4: And You're like, here are the stat you know, and
- 19:20Speaker 4: I'm like.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Okay, okay, sorry. So how do you think society's views
- 19:25Speaker 5: on pregnancies have changed since you wrote the book.
- 19:31Speaker 1: I do think we've gotten a little bit better about talking,
- 19:33Speaker 1: particularly about postpartum stuff.
- 19:36Speaker 2: So I think there's been some.
- 19:39Speaker 1: More acknowledgment of both physical and especially like.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Emotional sort of postpartum issues.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Not that we fix them, but I think there's been
- 19:49Speaker 1: a I think there's been some movement there in the
- 19:51Speaker 1: last decade, which is good.
- 19:54Speaker 2: It's different from.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Having a lot of good research that fixes it. But
- 19:57Speaker 1: like talking about it, that's like a first like a
- 20:00Speaker 1: first step.
- 20:01Speaker 5: We'll take it well, it's it's a slow climb, isn't it.
- 20:05Speaker 2: We're going up.
- 20:06Speaker 4: You know, you really have to take our own space,
- 20:09Speaker 4: don't we.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Do you have over the counter birth control?
- 20:12Speaker 4: That's cool news today?
- 20:15Speaker 5: Yeah, open, yes, it'll be out by the new year.
- 20:19Speaker 5: And you know over the counter right next to the condoms.
- 20:23Speaker 5: It's like almost like people are acknowledging that there are
- 20:25Speaker 5: two sexual partners.
- 20:26Speaker 4: That make a baby.
- 20:28Speaker 5: It's all, where do you think we need to go next?
- 20:32Speaker 5: In terms of research focused on pregnancy?
- 20:37Speaker 1: I mean, one pretty basic issue is that there's not
- 20:41Speaker 1: a lot of funding for research on pregnancy and postpartum
- 20:45Speaker 1: and it's not clear who, like who should fund that,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you know, I mean like we've talked about this before,
- 20:50Speaker 1: but like when you make viagra, like you can see
- 20:53Speaker 1: who funds that, you know, like the big the pharmaceutical
- 20:58Speaker 1: companies who want to sell a lot of medications to
- 21:01Speaker 1: people who want their penis to work.
- 21:02Speaker 2: That's like a very easy that's a good sell. It's good.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a tough it's tough to beat that marketing.
- 21:10Speaker 2: It's tough to be that marketing.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Agreed, But I do feel like there's just almost nothing
- 21:15Speaker 1: about some of the more really almost on the most
- 21:17Speaker 1: basic questions in pregnancy and postpartum, and those are you know,
- 21:23Speaker 1: those are places where I think we could do I
- 21:25Speaker 1: think we could do more, I'm not always sure exactly how.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And then there's like more basic questions like we exclude
- 21:31Speaker 1: pregnant women from all of our trials and so questions
- 21:34Speaker 1: like our SSRI is safe during pregnancy, and like how
- 21:39Speaker 1: should I evaluate that we don't really have good enough
- 21:42Speaker 1: data on. Then some of it's for ethical reasons, but
- 21:44Speaker 1: I think you make the other ethical argument, like it's
- 21:47Speaker 1: not ethical to not know the answer to this question.
- 21:50Speaker 5: Like agreed, I was on lexippro throughout my whole pregnancy,
- 21:55Speaker 5: and that was psychopharmacology. You know, I someonet a privilege
- 22:01Speaker 5: like I had the the means and the resources to
- 22:05Speaker 5: to get some answers, and that's so rare.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And I think we also tell the messaging we give
- 22:11Speaker 1: people has so much like sort of almost shame in it, right,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you sort of tell people like, well you can do
- 22:19Speaker 1: this if you have to, do you feel like you
- 22:22Speaker 1: need it?
- 22:23Speaker 2: Like, well I do need it, Yeah, yes, I do
- 22:26Speaker 2: feel like that, you.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Know, right, But that messaging is just kind of being like, well,
- 22:30Speaker 1: if you're a bad If you're like a bad parent,
- 22:32Speaker 1: I don't love your baby.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Just do this selfish thing for your own to not
- 22:36Speaker 2: be depressed.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Just yeah, that narrative is so tired and and harmful,
- 22:41Speaker 5: and and do you just spelling it out and giving
- 22:45Speaker 5: the actual facts and the you know, the strength of
- 22:48Speaker 5: the studies.
- 22:49Speaker 4: I just am so grateful for you.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Do you normally so you you like do you like
- 22:56Speaker 1: graphs generally?
- 22:58Speaker 2: Grap I like the graphs like data? Did you like
- 23:01Speaker 2: like was that?
- 23:03Speaker 4: No?
- 23:03Speaker 5: No, my brain shuts right on down, which is why
- 23:08Speaker 5: I'm sure I've frantically texted you late night with some
- 23:12Speaker 5: information that you probably have spelled.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Out there but I just couldn't.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Yeah, but do you dream about Like if you wake
- 23:19Speaker 5: up and you're like, I just said the best dream
- 23:20Speaker 5: is it just like a series of graphs.
- 23:24Speaker 1: They're just really well designed graphs, you know, with like
- 23:26Speaker 1: a great color scheme.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Yeah, you're like, oh god, I have to tell you
- 23:30Speaker 5: about my dream.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Originally, my husband's also an economist, so he's like, oh yeah,
- 23:34Speaker 1: I'm also yeah, yeah you too.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Like your dates? You're just like, you know, I mean dates,
- 23:41Speaker 5: what am I talking about? I mean, I guess some
- 23:43Speaker 5: people go out with their husbands.
- 23:44Speaker 2: My kids are old, we.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Go out on dates and we do talk almost exclusively
- 23:48Speaker 1: about econometric methodology.
- 23:52Speaker 5: So that's that's I'm so happy for both of you.
- 23:58Speaker 5: And yeah, and I would love to be a fly
- 24:00Speaker 5: on the wall for some of your conversations when one
- 24:02Speaker 5: of you gets something wrong. Now I am I'm really
- 24:10Speaker 5: excited to queue you up for a little bit of
- 24:14Speaker 5: an announcement that you're going to make tonight.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Can I guess what it is?
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 24:19Speaker 4: Why don't be pregnant?
- 24:20Speaker 2: No, it's okay.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Well, then you say what the announcement is.
- 24:24Speaker 1: It's not that that would be well of where the
- 24:28Speaker 1: store is closed?
- 24:28Speaker 2: It's closed.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Am I pregnant?
- 24:30Speaker 2: I don't.
- 24:31Speaker 5: I don't have a uterus anymore, So probably you're gonna
- 24:34Speaker 5: have to take the news.
- 24:35Speaker 2: I'm gonna okay.
- 24:37Speaker 1: The news is that I am publishing another book.
- 24:42Speaker 2: My fourth book is coming out in the spring.
- 24:46Speaker 1: It is called The Unexpected, and it is about navigating
- 24:50Speaker 1: pregnancy after complications. And like my first three books were
- 24:55Speaker 1: basically motivated by my own experience, and this is motivated
- 24:58Speaker 1: by the people who I've talked to over the past decade,
- 25:02Speaker 1: and it is trying to answer this question that people
- 25:05Speaker 1: come to me with, which is I had this complication
- 25:08Speaker 1: something happened in my first pregnancy, Like how do I
- 25:11Speaker 1: navigate the next one?
- 25:12Speaker 2: What is the data say about recurrence? What are the
- 25:14Speaker 2: treatments I need?
- 25:16Speaker 1: And how do I navigate a conversation with my provider.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I actually wrote it together with a maternal feed of
- 25:23Speaker 1: metals and specialist.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Named Ate Fox at Mount Sinai, and.
- 25:29Speaker 1: It is it's just a sort of laber of love
- 25:32Speaker 1: between the two of us about trying to make this
- 25:34Speaker 1: experience that.
- 25:37Speaker 2: A lot of people have better and more productive.
- 25:42Speaker 5: I mean, I like, I think one of the incredible
- 25:44Speaker 5: news Please continue. Sorry, I'm just so thank you for
- 25:47Speaker 5: writing this book. I'm I just everybody right now, I'm
- 25:50Speaker 5: sure is thinking about all of the women in their
- 25:53Speaker 5: lives who need this book, who have needed this book,
- 25:56Speaker 5: and the future generations who will have this book as
- 25:59Speaker 5: a resource.
- 26:00Speaker 4: Please continue. But yeah, I know everything.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I would just I think the way we're talking about
- 26:04Speaker 1: is like, I hope that you don't like usually when
- 26:05Speaker 1: you write a book, you're like, I hope everyone reads this.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I'm like, I hope no one reais this. I hope
- 26:10Speaker 1: you are not reading this book, but I hope that
- 26:12Speaker 1: everybody reads it so they can sort of see what
- 26:15Speaker 1: is the experience of other people are having or that
- 26:17Speaker 1: they have it, Like if you need this, I want
- 26:18Speaker 1: you to have it. And and actually some of you know,
- 26:22Speaker 1: our conversations about your hyperamesis were a part of this for.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Me sort of thinking about you know what, like I
- 26:30Speaker 2: don't know what, like what would have been helpful? What
- 26:33Speaker 2: would you want to know?
- 26:34Speaker 1: In thinking about, you know, do I want to do
- 26:35Speaker 1: this again? Is there anything I can do that's that's better?
- 26:38Speaker 1: You know, how would I want to make that decision?
- 26:40Speaker 1: And we talk about complications that range from hypermesis, just
- 26:44Speaker 1: stational diabetes, preclimcy have miscarriage, stillbirth. We're trying to sort
- 26:47Speaker 1: of talk about, yeah, just all of this stuff and
- 26:51Speaker 1: what's the what's the help people need and what is
- 26:52Speaker 1: the data to say?
- 26:53Speaker 4: And that is so noble, so dope of you.
- 27:00Speaker 5: It's I I don't really have the words, but but
- 27:05Speaker 5: just with how we were talking about how alone people
- 27:07Speaker 5: can feel and not understanding. So you know, you might
- 27:10Speaker 5: hear that your friend just went through that had one
- 27:14Speaker 5: of those conditions and you don't really know you know,
- 27:17Speaker 5: and they don't want to burden you, and like hyper Emesis,
- 27:20Speaker 5: I didn't really try to convey to everyone in the
- 27:22Speaker 5: moment what it was like. But then, you know, we
- 27:25Speaker 5: were already shooting this documentary and it was like, well,
- 27:28Speaker 5: I'm going to show you, and so I'm sure that
- 27:32Speaker 5: this book will help so many people and and everybody.
- 27:36Speaker 5: We'll just have it in their library, you know, and like,
- 27:38Speaker 5: you know, right away, just to have a resource to
- 27:40Speaker 5: give your friends with all these questions, like that's just
- 27:44Speaker 5: that's amazing. Can you tell us a little bit more
- 27:45Speaker 5: about the about the book and about your how you've
- 27:48Speaker 5: been writing it, And yeah, it.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Was always interesting because I like to write alone because
- 27:53Speaker 1: I'm control freak, and so writing with someone else has
- 27:58Speaker 1: been amazing because native is awesome. But it's also was
- 28:03Speaker 1: really quite interesting to sort of see someone else's perspective
- 28:05Speaker 1: and think about how you move, how you sort of
- 28:07Speaker 1: move these things, sort of fift these things together. And
- 28:10Speaker 1: particularly we talk about these complicated pregnancy issues, there isn't
- 28:15Speaker 1: an answer. You know, a lot of times with the data,
- 28:18Speaker 1: when I talk about first pregnancies, you'd sort of be like,
- 28:20Speaker 1: here's the data, you know, here's the probability.
- 28:22Speaker 2: You get listeria from you know, Turkey, it's like almost zero.
- 28:26Speaker 1: But this is like you had pre eclamsia. What is
- 28:29Speaker 1: going to happen in the next pregnancy depends a lot
- 28:32Speaker 1: on how serious it was, exactly what the conditions were.
- 28:35Speaker 1: And so we're trying to give people the language to
- 28:40Speaker 1: process what happened, to think about it, and to engage
- 28:43Speaker 1: with their doctor and think about what's next, rather than saying, Okay,
- 28:47Speaker 1: this is exactly what's going to happen or this is
- 28:49Speaker 1: the exact data. And I think that kind of language
- 28:52Speaker 1: piece and navigation piece in just recognizing the also the
- 28:57Speaker 1: emotional cost that this takes, and you know, particularly after pregnancy,
- 29:02Speaker 1: after any of these things, but after pregnancy, loss sort
- 29:04Speaker 1: of came up the most, like how do you.
- 29:08Speaker 2: How do you know if you're ready to move forward?
- 29:10Speaker 2: Like how would you think about that? I think that's
- 29:13Speaker 2: just I don't know. That's what we're trying to that's what.
- 29:16Speaker 1: And then we talked about like post some of the
- 29:18Speaker 1: post birth stuff, vaginal tearing.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Like the fun stuff. You covered all the fun stuff.
- 29:26Speaker 1: When I was like when I was pregnant before I
- 29:29Speaker 1: was saying, long before I got pregnant. The first friends
- 29:31Speaker 1: that we had had, the first friends we had had
- 29:34Speaker 1: a kid.
- 29:35Speaker 2: When I went over to their house like four.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Weeks after the baby was born, I rang the door
- 29:39Speaker 1: bell and like you know, they it came and she
- 29:41Speaker 1: and I opened and I said, like she opened the door,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I said, how are things going?
- 29:44Speaker 2: She was like, I have a tear from my vagina
- 29:46Speaker 2: all the way to my an. It's like the first
- 29:48Speaker 2: thing she said.
- 29:48Speaker 4: And I was just like what you supposed to say?
- 29:50Speaker 6: I was like, oh, like I brought a bag yette,
- 29:53Speaker 6: you know, bone ye like, but I think it was
- 29:58Speaker 6: a sort of like and I the recognition of that
- 30:03Speaker 6: and sort of seeing like okay, like that's the thing
- 30:05Speaker 6: that happens.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Like how do you how do you think about another
- 30:08Speaker 2: pregnancy after that?
- 30:09Speaker 1: What?
- 30:09Speaker 2: How do you navigate those kind of serious complications? Is anyway?
- 30:13Speaker 2: I'm just I'm very well.
- 30:14Speaker 4: I want to ask you.
- 30:15Speaker 5: I have a friend who's my age, she's forty two,
- 30:19Speaker 5: and her daughter has spina bifida, and now.
- 30:26Speaker 4: There but there are studies like that that is do
- 30:29Speaker 4: you know? Am I wrong?
- 30:30Speaker 7: Is that?
- 30:30Speaker 4: Like that's a preventable yeah?
- 30:33Speaker 5: You know they so it's like if you could be
- 30:36Speaker 5: armed with information. You're making it really accessible and easy
- 30:42Speaker 5: for people, and like, I just I'm so grateful. And
- 30:46Speaker 5: I think I texted you because I love how how
- 30:49Speaker 5: much you've become a household name I uh, yeah, I
- 30:54Speaker 5: I you know, people will just name name drop you
- 30:57Speaker 5: and uh and I'm like, yeah, this is amazing because
- 31:01Speaker 5: you know, and I oh, I want to promote every Mother.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Counts Nice please, which yeah, really great charity.
- 31:07Speaker 5: And I had a good experience of having a doula,
- 31:10Speaker 5: even though I wound up having a C section, So you.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Found the doula helpful even with the C section?
- 31:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, because it's like, you know, you can't be
- 31:18Speaker 5: in the o R. Sadly you're with us in our brains,
- 31:22Speaker 5: but you aren't there to ask questions in the heat
- 31:24Speaker 5: of the moment.
- 31:24Speaker 2: You don't want me.
- 31:26Speaker 4: Yeah, no, no, we're good.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Come there.
- 31:30Speaker 4: And how can people get a copy of this book?
- 31:32Speaker 4: When is it coming out?
- 31:33Speaker 2: It's coming out April thirty, twenty twenty four.
- 31:35Speaker 1: We will send out a pre order link to people
- 31:37Speaker 1: who are signed up for this and I'm sure that
- 31:40Speaker 1: in the newsletter it will be around.
- 31:43Speaker 2: So you have a look.
- 31:44Speaker 4: And I get one for free, Yes, you can.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Get one for free. We'll send you a free one. Yeah, well,
- 31:48Speaker 1: thank you early if you want, you know, get.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Yeah, you know I do.
- 31:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I just you know, I have so many friends
- 31:54Speaker 5: who have been through, you know, so many of the conditions,
- 31:57Speaker 5: and almost all my friends have had pregnancy loss, and
- 32:00Speaker 5: all of them felt alone, and you know, and it's
- 32:04Speaker 5: just and I think statistics are so helpful in these
- 32:08Speaker 5: moments because you know, it doesn't matter how much everybody's
- 32:11Speaker 5: telling you, you know, trying to comfort you.
- 32:14Speaker 4: Numbers, Emily's got the numbers, y'all.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Numbers are relaxing.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Come here for the numbers, Come here for the charts.
- 32:25Speaker 5: Yeah well, I'm like just so grateful to get to
- 32:29Speaker 5: talk to you and for you to be, you know,
- 32:33Speaker 5: getting my back all these.
- 32:34Speaker 4: Years and I've got yours. And uh here comes, Oh,
- 32:42Speaker 4: Sarah's rocking the new merch. You gotta put Sarah on,
- 32:47Speaker 4: get her on.
- 32:48Speaker 2: There we go. We got some expecting better merch. I
- 32:51Speaker 2: like the shirt, Sarah. Thanks, y'all.
- 32:54Speaker 4: I am so grateful to you.
- 32:56Speaker 2: We're gonna get you that too.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Amy.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna send you the book and I'm gonna send
- 32:59Speaker 1: you like a nice sweatshirt.
- 33:01Speaker 2: With.
- 33:01Speaker 4: I want all of the merch. I want a full
- 33:04Speaker 4: warm up.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Outfit, full like jogging suit.
- 33:09Speaker 4: Yes, and you actually empowered me to help.
- 33:14Speaker 5: Uh curate a bunch of essays called the Arrival Stories,
- 33:17Speaker 5: which I haven't.
- 33:21Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, you do not, really I do have. Yeah,
- 33:25Speaker 4: I mean yeah, it's definitely empowered me to do that.
- 33:27Speaker 5: Just women sharing their stories and finding out, especially about
- 33:31Speaker 5: women of colors, you know, maternal you know, really unnecessary,
- 33:38Speaker 5: preventable and maturnable man maternal death.
- 33:41Speaker 4: And thank you so much. I'm so excited. I can't wait.
- 33:45Speaker 2: We're going to get your book sweatshirt. Thank you for
- 33:48Speaker 2: being here, Thank you so much. Bye.
- 33:54Speaker 3: So I feel I want to talk about this march,
- 33:57Speaker 3: but you want to talk about your shirt. I also
- 34:01Speaker 3: want to talk about how exciting this new book is.
- 34:05Speaker 3: I feel like we are all here to celebrate ten
- 34:07Speaker 3: years of an amazing book that you have that is
- 34:09Speaker 3: still so helpful to so many. But then also this
- 34:12Speaker 3: new book, even just hearing y'all talk about it, it's
- 34:15Speaker 3: I mean, these are stories that I hear day in
- 34:17Speaker 3: and day out, and I think the fact that you
- 34:18Speaker 3: have written a book about this gives so many people
- 34:22Speaker 3: just the awareness that they are not alone, like you,
- 34:25Speaker 3: just writing about this like helps people know that they
- 34:28Speaker 3: are seen, and I think that that's just what a
- 34:30Speaker 3: lot of people want, and then giving them the resources
- 34:32Speaker 3: to make decisions. So I'm super excited.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm I'm excited.
- 34:37Speaker 1: When we started this project, I went out to people
- 34:41Speaker 1: and I said, you know, can you tell us about
- 34:43Speaker 1: your pregnancy, sort of your experience of having complicated pregnancy.
- 34:47Speaker 1: And we use some of those quotes, a small number
- 34:49Speaker 1: of those quotes in the book, but just the number
- 34:51Speaker 1: of things that came back, and the feeling of people
- 34:56Speaker 1: feeling alone, feeling unable to navigate, sort of struggling with
- 34:59Speaker 1: what you do with a second deciding about having a
- 35:02Speaker 1: second pregnancy, were having one.
- 35:04Speaker 2: It's just like the.
- 35:06Speaker 1: There is so much, I think, so much need for
- 35:10Speaker 1: these kind of honest and open conversations that we are
- 35:14Speaker 1: just not having. We're just not having enough. So I'm
- 35:17Speaker 1: hoping we'll have them more now. I mean, this will
- 35:19Speaker 1: make people have them more. This is this platform.
- 35:22Speaker 3: It is and I think that, I mean, I can
- 35:24Speaker 3: assure you that it will be such an amazing resource.
- 35:27Speaker 3: I mean, I can think of patients who come in
- 35:29Speaker 3: every day and it's they hit a prolapse, they hit
- 35:31Speaker 3: a tear, they had a traumatic berth. I mean, it
- 35:33Speaker 3: is unfortunate, it's more people than we'd like it to be.
- 35:38Speaker 3: But I think that this is good. I mean, people
- 35:40Speaker 3: want to stop having babies because it's traumatic, you know,
- 35:43Speaker 3: and so I think that this is a huge resource
- 35:46Speaker 3: that is going to help so so many people.
- 35:48Speaker 1: I also hope, I mean, this is a little bit tangential,
- 35:51Speaker 1: but like I hope this is something some doctors will
- 35:54Speaker 1: be because we do have a bunch of stuff from
- 35:56Speaker 1: women in there. And I think not all I mean,
- 35:58Speaker 1: of course, not always, but there are times in which
- 36:00Speaker 1: people feel like they aren't really like.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Their sort of experiences aren't being listened to, or they're.
- 36:06Speaker 1: They're not quite able to engage with the decision making
- 36:09Speaker 1: in the way that they would like. And I hope
- 36:11Speaker 1: this sort of like we can bring people together a
- 36:13Speaker 1: little bit between the experiences people are having and the
- 36:17Speaker 1: and the data.
- 36:18Speaker 2: That's the goal.
- 36:20Speaker 3: I'm excited to read it, so sign me up for
- 36:22Speaker 3: a copy as well.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I will also, Yes, and you already have some of
- 36:25Speaker 1: the march we sent you more merch we send your
- 36:26Speaker 1: copy of the book.
- 36:27Speaker 2: It's great.
- 36:27Speaker 3: I love merch clearly, so if everybody else also loves merch,
- 36:32Speaker 3: I will let y'all know who are here that there
- 36:35Speaker 3: is a link below if you want to get some
- 36:37Speaker 3: expecting better goodies. We have stuff for kiddos and babies
- 36:41Speaker 3: and mamas and you know, everywhere in between. And then
- 36:45Speaker 3: you'll also be getting an email tomorrow in your inbox
- 36:49Speaker 3: with the link to order as well. So super excited
- 36:52Speaker 3: to rep you tonight, Emily Sarah. But let's go on
- 36:57Speaker 3: into our next section, which is super exciting because we've
- 37:00Speaker 3: got some folks here who want to chat with you
- 37:02Speaker 3: live and they want to ask you some questions about
- 37:06Speaker 3: their pregnancy. And it's a really awesome opportunity that they
- 37:10Speaker 3: get to chat with you. So let's go right into that.
- 37:12Speaker 3: So first we have a question from Zena in California,
- 37:16Speaker 3: so we'll wait for Xena to jump on in there.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Were Hey, Zena, Zena, how's it going?
- 37:22Speaker 1: Looks a nice behind you? It looks like such a nice.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I don't know, looks like it's warm.
- 37:28Speaker 2: It is one. It's actually like in the eighties here,
- 37:31Speaker 2: just kind of nice.
- 37:32Speaker 1: That's what ninety seven degrees in my office right now.
- 37:35Speaker 1: And so I'm like sting.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Anyway, you're glowing, Emily.
- 37:39Speaker 3: You're glowing well, Xena, go ahead and go ahead with
- 37:42Speaker 3: your question for Emily.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you for everything. First of all, I am
- 37:47Speaker 2: an expecting parent, and so my question too is what
- 37:50Speaker 2: is your number one piece of advice for new expecting parents?
- 37:55Speaker 1: Okay, So I think I have two things, so you
- 37:59Speaker 1: know it's not number one.
- 38:00Speaker 2: This is my top two. Okay.
- 38:01Speaker 1: So the first, uh, The first is that there are
- 38:05Speaker 1: some things that are important and many things that will
- 38:09Speaker 1: occupy your brain that are not. And it is very
- 38:12Speaker 1: hard with your first kid to not think about all
- 38:16Speaker 1: of those things that are not important, but you should try,
- 38:19Speaker 1: so trying when you're like obsessed about like should.
- 38:22Speaker 2: My kid wear mittens? That was my thing, or like, you.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Know, is it okay for the room to be sixty
- 38:27Speaker 1: nine degrees because somebody told me it should be sixty
- 38:29Speaker 1: eight degrees, Like just taking a deep breath and being like,
- 38:32Speaker 1: is it possibly important that it be sixty eight degrees? No, okay,
- 38:36Speaker 1: move on to the things that are important. And I
- 38:38Speaker 1: think that's like very easy with a second kid. With
- 38:40Speaker 1: a first kid, it kind of takes over. The second
- 38:44Speaker 1: thing is that if you have a partner, I would
- 38:48Speaker 1: plan to check in about how things are going, like
- 38:52Speaker 1: at two weeks and at four weeks, I would like
- 38:54Speaker 1: literally put on the calendar like this is the twenty
- 38:56Speaker 1: minute period when we're going to talk about how things
- 38:59Speaker 1: are going, because it's very easy to kind of never
- 39:01Speaker 1: take a step back and say like, is there a
- 39:04Speaker 1: problem we're having that we could fix? Is there something
- 39:06Speaker 1: that I'm really struggling with. Is one of us feeling depressed?
- 39:10Speaker 1: Is there something going wrong that we need to fix?
- 39:13Speaker 1: And those things can get worse and worse and worse.
- 39:15Speaker 1: And if you have those moments like pre planned, sometimes
- 39:19Speaker 1: that can help sort of get over some of those pumps.
- 39:22Speaker 1: So those are the things, Those are the things I
- 39:24Speaker 1: wish I had done.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Thank you so much. I will definitely be scheduling Google
- 39:29Speaker 2: calendar advice with my husband. Invite your partner to Google
- 39:33Speaker 2: calendar invite. That's it, That's all you need to do.
- 39:35Speaker 1: She just like love, That's what I That's how I
- 39:37Speaker 1: told my husband I was expecting our second kid. I
- 39:40Speaker 1: sent him a Google Calendar invite for the do date
- 39:42Speaker 1: and he just accepted it and didn't say anything.
- 39:46Speaker 2: And then like later I called him, and I was like,
- 39:48Speaker 2: did you get that? He was like, oh, yeah, was
- 39:49Speaker 2: that what that was?
- 39:51Speaker 3: I was, it's great, that's great. Thank you.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Congratulations, Da congratulations, thank you.
- 39:59Speaker 3: I think that's you know, Emily, it's such an important
- 40:01Speaker 3: point before we go to the next The next question
- 40:04Speaker 3: is that I don't think anybody told us like that
- 40:08Speaker 3: there will be shifts in dynamics in your relationship with
- 40:10Speaker 3: your partner. It's just it's kind of focused on baby
- 40:13Speaker 3: and mom and and you know, all the logistics. But
- 40:16Speaker 3: I think that that was a real, a really surprising piece.
- 40:19Speaker 3: So that was great advice. I totally is that.
- 40:23Speaker 1: And it's hard and we sort of know in the
- 40:25Speaker 1: data that like people have a hard time having a
- 40:28Speaker 1: baby is hard on your on your relationship, but yeah, yeah,
- 40:33Speaker 1: it's hard to it's good to know it in advance.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Yeah, agreed.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Agreed. Okay, So next we have Priscilla from New Jersey.
- 40:41Speaker 3: So Priscilla, welcome, Thank.
- 40:45Speaker 7: Ye, Sarah, nice to meet you both. I won't have
- 40:50Speaker 7: a question about pregnancy. I have two kids already, have
- 40:53Speaker 7: a five year old daughter and an eighteen month old daughter.
- 40:56Speaker 7: So my question is for after pregnancy, and it's not
- 41:00Speaker 7: about data. I'm just wondering, Emily, if you can share
- 41:03Speaker 7: with us personal experience. I know you like running a lot,
- 41:06Speaker 7: and so I've been trying to get back into a
- 41:08Speaker 7: workout routine. So I'm wondering if you could share how
- 41:10Speaker 7: did you get back into your workout routine. Was it
- 41:13Speaker 7: different from your first pregnancy versus like your second pregnancy.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Or yeah, So so first of all, like sometimes you'll
- 41:21Speaker 1: be like you run, Like how do you find time
- 41:23Speaker 1: to run?
- 41:24Speaker 2: So much? Like how do you get back to that?
- 41:25Speaker 2: Like my kids are big, Like I just go I've
- 41:27Speaker 2: just like watched TV. I'm leaving. And so I think
- 41:30Speaker 2: it was it did take a.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Very long time to get from where I was before
- 41:35Speaker 1: into like where I am now.
- 41:39Speaker 2: And and I.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Think I said there were sort of two when it
- 41:43Speaker 1: fuelized me. It's like there's like two pieces. One is
- 41:46Speaker 1: sort of figuring out like where I'm where where can
- 41:49Speaker 1: I be at this stage? Like what is realistic given
- 41:53Speaker 1: the ages of my kids and the time that I
- 41:54Speaker 1: have and the energy I have and like the physical
- 41:57Speaker 1: you know, capacity I have for this and like that's
- 41:59Speaker 1: not you know, that's not going to be necessarily the
- 42:01Speaker 1: same as it was before you had a kid, and
- 42:03Speaker 1: it's not necessarily the same as it is in you know,
- 42:05Speaker 1: in a decade, So just like a little bit of
- 42:07Speaker 1: grace or you know, asking yourself, like what's the purpose
- 42:11Speaker 1: of this workout? Like what am I trying to get
- 42:13Speaker 1: out of this? The second piece of it is there's
- 42:16Speaker 1: like a huge physical piece in this and your kids
- 42:18Speaker 1: are a little bit older.
- 42:19Speaker 2: But for the people who are who are sort of.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Expecting, like if you are hoping to get back to
- 42:27Speaker 1: exercising in the period after you have a baby, Lie
- 42:31Speaker 1: is making an appointment with.
- 42:32Speaker 2: A pelvic floor therapist before you have.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Your baby, like and Sarah, I think this is a
- 42:37Speaker 1: place where like can you can you say a little
- 42:39Speaker 1: bit more about what that is?
- 42:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, and you know, it's a great question.
- 42:43Speaker 3: I think it's one that a lot of us haven't.
- 42:45Speaker 3: I think of it in two ways. Is that there's
- 42:47Speaker 3: kind of a mental component and there's a physical component.
- 42:49Speaker 3: I think for I can you know, probably Emily and
- 42:52Speaker 3: people like myself, like, exercise is a stress relief. It's
- 42:55Speaker 3: a piece of me that helps me feel like me.
- 42:58Speaker 3: And I think after you have a baby that feels
- 43:00Speaker 3: totally lost when you don't have that and so that's
- 43:04Speaker 3: hard because you just want to get back, but your
- 43:06Speaker 3: body's kind of like still just treading water, trying to
- 43:09Speaker 3: keep its head, you know, above water. But then you're
- 43:11Speaker 3: kind of like, I can't even swim yet. And so
- 43:13Speaker 3: I think that a lot of it is just kind
- 43:15Speaker 3: of recognizing like you're in a different season. But as
- 43:17Speaker 3: Emily said, and I echo this with older kids too,
- 43:20Speaker 3: like those seasons will come back, like you will get
- 43:22Speaker 3: pieces of yourself back as your kids get older. So
- 43:26Speaker 3: patience and grace go a really long way. I think.
- 43:29Speaker 3: The other thing, obviously, is that there's a very physical
- 43:32Speaker 3: aspect to this. Your body went through ten months of pregnancy,
- 43:35Speaker 3: and during that pregnancy, your core, your pelvic floor, your pelvis,
- 43:39Speaker 3: your stability all change. And then you go through birth,
- 43:42Speaker 3: which as Emily mentioned, can end up for some folks
- 43:46Speaker 3: with the Sssaian birth or a tear from your vagina
- 43:48Speaker 3: to your anus. So I think we want to give
- 43:50Speaker 3: our bodies time to do some real healing and checking
- 43:54Speaker 3: in with a pelvic floor. Physical therapy is a therapist
- 43:56Speaker 3: is a great first step at you know, SIXS is
- 44:00Speaker 3: what I recommend for folks immediately after birth, but it's
- 44:02Speaker 3: never too late. I mean, we see people you know
- 44:05Speaker 3: months and years later, but you really want to think
- 44:07Speaker 3: of it like building your foundation first. So before Emily
- 44:09Speaker 3: went back to running, she could have maybe started some
- 44:12Speaker 3: core work or some ship strengthening and things like that
- 44:14Speaker 3: to get you prepared to do the things that you
- 44:16Speaker 3: want to do. So it's such kind of trite advice,
- 44:19Speaker 3: but I say, like, take it slow. You will get
- 44:22Speaker 3: those pieces of yourself back as your babies get older.
- 44:25Speaker 3: But I think that there is a physical component that
- 44:27Speaker 3: can definitely be addressed as well.
- 44:29Speaker 7: Right, Thank you vote so.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Much, now, thank y'all so much, Thank you Priscilla. Wow,
- 44:37Speaker 3: what a night, what great questions, what great conversation. Just
- 44:42Speaker 3: thank you everyone for joining us, Thank you Emily for
- 44:45Speaker 3: this exciting announcement and for putting out this amazing piece
- 44:49Speaker 3: of work ten years ago that is still so helpful
- 44:51Speaker 3: and so relevant to so many people. It's just it's
- 44:54Speaker 3: really exciting. I feel like my cheeks are hurting from
- 44:57Speaker 3: smiling so much.
- 44:59Speaker 1: I'm really thank you, yeah, thank you again for doing
- 45:01Speaker 1: and Sarah, it's just really it's it's very special for
- 45:05Speaker 1: me to get to recognize this and be able to
- 45:09Speaker 1: say thank you and to like see everybody.
- 45:12Speaker 2: I mean not like physically see them, but see you,
- 45:15Speaker 2: and it just I'm this is very nice.
- 45:18Speaker 1: I'm not it's so nice that I can't formulate a sentence,
- 45:21Speaker 1: but it's just.
- 45:23Speaker 3: Oh, well, that's okay. You formulate a lot of sentences.
- 45:25Speaker 2: I do. I'm so good in writing.
- 45:28Speaker 3: But you're also great on Instagram. So I know that
- 45:32Speaker 3: every Wednesday you do Q and a's on Instagram and
- 45:35Speaker 3: I love it. I tune in every week and I'm like,
- 45:37Speaker 3: what are people asking about? And You're I always am
- 45:40Speaker 3: so amazed at you're asking. You're answering questions about everything
- 45:43Speaker 3: from like HEADLCE to pro labs to you know, prenatal vitamins,
- 45:49Speaker 3: and I'm like, wow, like I know one thing really well.
- 45:51Speaker 3: I'm like Ellen knows and not a lot of stuff
- 45:54Speaker 3: you know. So but I know every Wednesday. So for
- 45:57Speaker 3: folks of you who didn't get your question answer tonight
- 46:00Speaker 3: but want to ask Emily a question, if you jump
- 46:02Speaker 3: onto her Instagram, which is at prof Emily Oster. So
- 46:06Speaker 3: at prof Emily Oster on Instagram, she has a Q
- 46:10Speaker 3: and A, a question box she posts where you can
- 46:12Speaker 3: ask your questions and then she'll pop on. Usually after
- 46:15Speaker 3: one of her runs in the morning, she'll answer your question,
- 46:19Speaker 3: I have a sweaty answer. So but I'm amazed. I'm like,
- 46:22Speaker 3: here she is. She just did her run, you know,
- 46:24Speaker 3: and so that's motivating to me as well. So everybody
- 46:28Speaker 3: make sure that you tune in for that. And then
- 46:31Speaker 3: I know that you're on Instagram, Emily, can you just
- 46:34Speaker 3: I know that there's so many people here who subscribe
- 46:36Speaker 3: to your newsletter, But where else can people find you?
- 46:39Speaker 3: I know so many of us want to stay tuned
- 46:40Speaker 3: for more information about your new book, Like, where can
- 46:43Speaker 3: we find you after this or get in touch with you?
- 46:46Speaker 1: I think the best place is parent Data, which is
- 46:48Speaker 1: our newsletter and it's.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Now a website. And like my.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Goal with parent Data is to sort of take people
- 46:57Speaker 1: wrote expecting better and then say, you know, when you
- 47:00Speaker 1: were pregnant, when you have a kid.
- 47:02Speaker 2: There's a lot of googling, Like this book is pretty long,
- 47:04Speaker 2: but like.
- 47:05Speaker 1: I couldn't get everything in and through the work in
- 47:07Speaker 1: parent Data, they've been writing this newsletter now for.
- 47:11Speaker 2: For I guess three years, and there's you know, five
- 47:13Speaker 2: hundred and three.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Posts and they answer a lot of questions that are
- 47:17Speaker 1: more detailed than what we can talk about in the book.
- 47:19Speaker 1: So my sort of life goal is that when people
- 47:22Speaker 1: are up at three o'clock in the morning panicking, instead
- 47:24Speaker 1: of like asking Google and getting a lot of even
- 47:28Speaker 1: more panicky results, they can go to parent data dot
- 47:31Speaker 1: org and they can ask their question and they can
- 47:33Speaker 1: get a non panicky related answer from us. So that
- 47:38Speaker 1: is the best place to find me that in Instagram, and.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Hopefully we can get everybody to be more relaxed and
