- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from Newstalk z'd be follow
- 0:12Speaker 1: this and our Wide Ranger podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Studio is New Zealand Hero Technology editor Chris Keel. Always
- 0:19Speaker 2: good to see you.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Chris and the great New Zealander. Sir Peter Beck's Rocket
- 0:23Speaker 3: Lab has been crowned the winner of the Deloitte Top
- 0:26Speaker 3: two hundred Company of the Year.
- 0:28Speaker 4: Yeah, the Deloitte judges talked about the huge gains rocket
- 0:33Speaker 4: Lab said this year record number of launchers, second earning
- 0:36Speaker 4: two Elon Musk's SpaceX. But they also have said at
- 0:40Speaker 4: home that well, I said, it's particularly special in that
- 0:44Speaker 4: rocket Lab has achieved success in the space industry, one
- 0:47Speaker 4: of the most competitive industries and hardest in the world,
- 0:52Speaker 4: and also that its success has been hugely beneficial for
- 0:56Speaker 4: New Zealand long term.
- 0:59Speaker 3: And what is Sir Peterbecks advice to other New Zealand
- 1:02Speaker 3: businesses trying to get to the levels he's reached, if
- 1:04Speaker 3: that's possible.
- 1:06Speaker 4: One of his things was think lowball. From day one
- 1:10Speaker 4: when he head first started Rocket lad Ben a Fisher
- 1:14Speaker 4: Michael Apprentice and he's just experimenting with his first rockets.
- 1:17Speaker 4: One of the first things he did was go to
- 1:20Speaker 4: the US and around two thousand and four, I think
- 1:22Speaker 4: it was a knock on the door at NASA and
- 1:25Speaker 4: Darker and so forth. And he wasn't immediately successful, but
- 1:29Speaker 4: he did eventually get early investment from the US, and
- 1:32Speaker 4: he's saying, you know, I think beyond borders straight away.
- 1:36Speaker 2: He had tenacity, that man. And so what is next
- 1:39Speaker 2: for Rocket lad Yeah?
- 1:40Speaker 4: I often busy man. He often sort of videos in
- 1:43Speaker 4: a pre recorded message for the awards show and watch shows,
- 1:47Speaker 4: but last night actually turned up in person and as
- 1:50Speaker 4: he arrived he saw Miles Hurell, the Fonterra ceo, and
- 1:54Speaker 4: he thought, Fonterra has had a fantastic year. They will
- 1:58Speaker 4: almost suddenly win. So I'll kick back and have a
- 2:00Speaker 4: couple of wines. But lo and behold Rocket Lab one.
- 2:03Speaker 4: So he was bored on stage and he gave a
- 2:07Speaker 4: recentably animated couple of minutes if you go to the
- 2:09Speaker 4: Herald Business Session section as a clip at the top
- 2:13Speaker 4: of the story, which is worth watching. And he mentioned
- 2:17Speaker 4: that Rocket Labs to spacecraft on the way to Mars.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I now just zip pass Moon. There are one and
- 2:23Speaker 4: a half a million kilometers away and He also mentioned
- 2:28Speaker 4: that once they arrive in Mars, I think late twenty
- 2:31Speaker 4: twenty seven, I'll make up twenty percent of every object
- 2:36Speaker 4: orbiting Mars. So wow, great effort for a New Zealand
- 2:39Speaker 4: founder company.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Oh good.
- 2:41Speaker 3: You know, I'm going to say a terrible cliche here,
- 2:43Speaker 3: but the whole shoot for the Stars idea to actually
- 2:46Speaker 3: be a New Zealander and to even dream of doing
- 2:50Speaker 3: something like that, let alone be heading off to Mars
- 2:52Speaker 3: with your work, that's just so incredible. Yeah.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yeah, what that man has done, you know, I just
- 2:58Speaker 2: can't be put into words. Is tenacity and pushing through
- 3:00Speaker 2: and not listening to the naysayers. You know, I vividly
- 3:04Speaker 2: remember an interview on TV. I'll say his names. It
- 3:07Speaker 2: was Paul Henry and when he said what he wanted
- 3:09Speaker 2: to do, Paul Henry laughed in his face. Then he
- 3:11Speaker 2: came back a couple of years later and Paul Henry
- 3:13Speaker 2: apologized and said I was wrong.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I was wrong.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But how good?
- 3:16Speaker 3: But I remember when we first started hearing that people,
- 3:19Speaker 3: you know that there was people that were going to
- 3:20Speaker 3: try and run a space PROGRAMMUT in New Zealand. I thought,
- 3:23Speaker 3: as this a scam. You know, this doesn't sound like
- 3:25Speaker 3: a real thing.
- 3:25Speaker 4: I have to say. When he launched his very first
- 3:28Speaker 4: rocket from Mercury Island owned by Sir Michael Fay and
- 3:31Speaker 4: he lost local fisherman to search for it paid, I
- 3:35Speaker 4: did write a story called Cora Amanda. We have a
- 3:38Speaker 4: problem taking them back. But of course look at them
- 3:42Speaker 4: now yahing them?
- 3:43Speaker 2: How good? Chris always nice to see you, mate. You
- 3:45Speaker 2: have a nice weekend. We'll get you make your name.
