- 0:00SPEAKER_00: And hello everybody.
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Happy Cyber Sunday.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Hope you're doing well.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: So I'm usually talking directly about cybersecurity technology or risk management or something like that.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Want to veer off a little bit still on cybersecurity, but talk about um careers, but maybe in a little different way.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: So let me start it out by saying we had our HughSetCon uh user group this last Thursday.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: If you haven't come out, let me know.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: I can put information.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: We'll probably put information on the link down here about the uh about the user group.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Uh great, it's a great group.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: We one of the form the format we have of it is before we have whoever we're got speaking uh get up on stage and talk about their topic, we do a discussion portion of it.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So anytime anybody registers, they have a chance to give us a uh discussion topic.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And we pick, we always get really good stuff.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: It's actually one of the hardest things I have to do to prepare for that user group is to uh me and a couple other people, Chad and Lauren and Devin over at um Chad and Devin are over at uh Authenticate that help us run this.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: We have to choose which one of those topics to discuss because we've only got limited time.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So what we try to do is limit it to two or three.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And this last time, there were two topics, both about cybersecurity careers, how to grow your career, kind of get really started in it.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And the other one was kind of retooling your career for modern cybersecurity.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And I think that those are kind of two different questions, but they both speak to something that kind of came up in my mind on what we got into talking about was mentorship and helping people get into the industry.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And I started thinking about it, I said, you know, you can combine those things if you're a person who is tenured, you've been in the cybersecurity industry a while, but maybe you feel like you maybe got a little stagnant.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: You would say, okay, well, in order to get rid of that stagnant feeling and to learn new stuff, you go study new stuff.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And that's absolutely right.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: But what if you find somebody to mentor that's just getting in the cybersecurity industry, got that excitement about getting into the industry, wanting to learn new things, you mentor them.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Yes, you are gonna mentor them on things like soft skills, learning how to communicate with people.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: You're gonna mentor them on things they should know because all of the there's a lot of basic things that are never gonna change.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: I still think you need to know networking concepts and those kind of things.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: But there are new things that maybe you don't know that they're very, very interested in.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, and that mentee may be able to teach you through your mentorship to them about new things.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of a twist.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Hey, I need to retool my career in some ways to learn new things.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Maybe I've been doing physical networking for a really long time, haven't done cloud stuff.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Uh, maybe I've not learned about application security because I'm a network person and I really didn't want to get into application security.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: It's not something I've been interested in.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Those kind of things.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: That you know, API security, AI.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I said it, yeah.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Somebody drink out there.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: I said AI.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: But seriously, there's a lot of people who are very, very interested in that.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: I remember when I got started or came out of AppSec that I was in for like four years directly, and it was in this time when cloud security and cloud was really up and coming, and people were using a lot more.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: So it took me a little bit to get back into, or not get back into, but to learn cloud stuff at a really serious, I knew what it was, but I didn't know a lot about it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: And learning it took a lot of time, a lot of effort, not saying that mentorship of somebody is going to solve that problem.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: But I think what would have helped me a lot is if I had found somebody that was trying to get into the industry and knew cloud really well and was trying to apply cybersecurity concepts to that.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Well, man, how much quicker would I have learned that if I would have taken them kind of under my wing, got them into cloud or got them into cybersecurity, and they helped me learn cloud.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: I know that every time I've mentored, and I've mentored a lot of people in this industry still want to do it.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: If you're, again, if you're interested in having some kind of mentor and helping you with stuff in cybersecurity, please give me a shout.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: But the people that I've mentored, I have learned, I have found that I've learned a lot from.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: And that's not just cybersecurity concepts, but I do always find something new in cybersecurity that they teach me.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: So I guess that's basically the summer summary of all of what I'm saying is that if you want to learn something new, retool your career, you feel like you're a little bit stagnant, find somebody who's excited about something, who wants to get into cyber.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: They're not in it right now, but they know some of these newer concepts and mentor them on how to get into cyber, what the what they need to know about cyber, but pay attention to them and have them teach you some of the newer concepts that maybe you're not aware of or you're interested in.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: And you'll learn from them as much as having them learn from you.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, let me know what you think.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Talk to you next time.
