- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to DeSoto Hills Baptist Church.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Our Sunday morning services are weekly at 9 and 10 30 a.m.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: You're listening to an audio recast of this past week's service.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: We hope you enjoy.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: God bless.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Alright, good morning, everybody.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Everybody feel do you feel like you had that extra hour of sleep?
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Like on uh in all honesty, because then we wake up and there's this strange thing going on outside that it's called rain.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Don't know if we know what that is anymore, but it's it was nice to be able to wake up and just be able to hear like the little tipper tapper on the on the window and all that.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited to be with you guys this morning uh in in quote unquote big church.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Um we still say that in student ministry land, uh, but it is a pleasure to be here uh and have this invitation.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: If you have your Bibles, we're gonna be in Mark chapter 8 this morning.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Mark chapter 8, and what we're gonna find when we get there, Mark chapter 8 beginning in verse 14, we find when we get there is we're gonna find the disciples in a very, very, very precarious position.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: A position that if they are left in this state, like beyond in just a short amount of time, like they're gonna be at each other's throats, they're gonna be throwing hands, they're gonna be very upset, they're gonna be very angry, that their whole lives are gonna be ruined.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: And this is the situation we find the disciples in.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: They are hungry.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Can we agree on that?
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: That there is sometimes no worse feeling in the world than actually being like really, really, really hungry.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: And then you mix that with getting angry and perturbed, and then it's hangry.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Can we agree on these words?
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, parents of young people, I've got, like I said, I've got a four-year-old about to be five, I've got a two-year-old that will be three on Christmas Day.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: And that is a day in and of itself because you're hungry and everything is closed and you're at the hospital, but I'm still bitter about that.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: You know, the hospital says, hey, we're gonna give you guys like a celebratory meal for having a baby, but not on Christmas Day, but that's neither here nor there.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: I love her so much.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: I do, I really do.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: This one is not taped, and I'm glad for that.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but but but we get angry, we get hangry, we we get all these things.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Like I said, I got I got little kids, and so it's always like 18 million times a day, these words, Daddy, can I have a snack?
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: And then you give them a snack, and it's not the right snack.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: And then you give them another snack, it's still not the right snack.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: And then it's like, hey, buddy, we're about to have breakfast, but then we want to snack while breakfast is being made, and it's that was impressive.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: And and all these things, like like we we get upset by these things, we get we we we get angry, but we see this situation where the disciples are gonna be very, very, very hungry.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: But Jesus says something I think that is so so profound if you dig a little bit deeper into this, that that that that that transcends every feeling that we have of uh of of fear, of worry, of anxiety, of hangriness, of all these things.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: He's gonna say some very, very, very important truths for all of us to hear this morning.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: So if you have the ability to, I would ask you to stand as we read God's word together.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Mark chapter 8, beginning in verse 14.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: And I love this story, and this is what happens.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: It says this It says, Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they only had one loaf with them in the boat.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: And he, being Jesus, cautioned them, saying, Watch out, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and beware of the leaven of the leaven of Herod.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: And then they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: And Jesus was aware of this, and he said to them, Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread?
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Do you not perceive, or do you not understand, or are your hearts hardened?
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Having eyes do you not see, having ears do you not hear?
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: And do you not remember?
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: And they said to him, Twelve.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: And the seven for the four thousand.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: How many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up then?
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And they said to him, Seven.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Verse 21, he said to them, Do you not yet understand?
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Let's pray together.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Father God, thank you for your word.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Thank you for the truth that we're going to be able to see in this place this morning, that you are a good God.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: We cannot deny that.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: We cannot run from that.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: We can only accept it that you are good, Lord.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: God, we love you.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: We pray these things in your name.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: So so here's the problem.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Here's the setup for these disciples.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: It is quite literally, they are on a road trip.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: And anybody who has ever been on a road trip knows just as important as the road trip, just as important as the destination, just as important as all those things, just as important of everything there, even more so sometimes is the road snacks.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Can I get an amen?
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Now you're probably sitting here, Hunter, why are we talking so much about this?
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you look at me.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: I don't miss very many meals.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, but but the road snacks are important.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: The road snacks are incredible.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: And we live in a world, praise God, that if we don't have the road snacks before we begin, if we just get down the road a little bit of the ways, we will find them.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Can I tell you one of my favorite stores in the entire world?
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: Some of you might be believers.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Some of you guys might know this.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, if I'm driving down the road, in the confidence that this place has that there will be a sign saying the next one is like 500 miles away.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Some of you know what I'm talking about.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: But by show of hands, has anybody ever been to a Bucky's before?
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: That's these are my people.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Hey, sometimes, listen, God calls us to some difficult times, some difficult places.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: When Sarah and I lived in North Alabama, we lived 17 minutes away from a Buckeys.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Ask me how I know such a distinct time, okay?
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: But but we love Buckeys.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: If you are unfamiliar with Bucky's, think if think if a gas station and Cracker Barrel had a baby and it was raised in Gatlinburg.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: And Bucky's has everything you could possibly want, and you load up on snacks, and we are refueled and we are refreshed and we are ready for the journey ahead.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: And even though we've spent all of our vacation money at this place, we are excited and we are ready.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Because the snacks are important.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: We find the disciples in this moment that they had forgotten to pack food for the journey.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: They had forgotten to be prepared.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: They had forgotten, and what they find themselves in is now they find themselves in this moment of fear, this moment of tension, this moment of uncertainty in all these things.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: And they are losing their minds in this moment.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: And I imagine they're looking at one another.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Peter, did you pack bread?
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: John, did you pack bread?
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: No.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Thomas, did you pack bread?
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: I doubt it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Bible humor, thank you.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: And they're going back and forth, and they come to this realization that they have no bread.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Now, here's why this is important is because we we understand context, we understand where they are in this moment in the boat, is that previously up to this point, bread has been such a focal, centralized point for Jesus' ministry up to this point.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: If you look a few chapters earlier, you have Mark chapter 6, where Jesus performs that great miracle, he feeds the 5,000.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: You look literally at the beginning of Mark chapter 8, he does a similar miracle, he feeds the 4,000.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Jesus has proven time and time and time again, up to this point for the disciples in the boat, that he is able to do abundantly more with astonishingly little.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: That he's able to do some great things with very small resources.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: He has proven to these disciples that he has the ability to supply, provide all that they need.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: But yet their action, their reaction, their feeling in this moment is that of fear, is that of worry.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: And what's funny is that Jesus has spent so much time with these disciples.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: If you look in these other, uh these other miracles that he has done, that the masses, the hungry, the poor, the pitiful, all those things, that Jesus in these moments, he has compassion on them.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: But then almost like a good, loving parent, he sees this moment and uses this as a teachable moment.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: He doesn't just solve the need, he's going to teach us something.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: And here today in 2026, he's going to teach us something very valuable as well.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: What does Jesus tell the disciples?
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Verse 15.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: It says this he cautioned them saying, Watch out, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and beware of the leaven of Herod.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: It almost sounds like a little like out of place here in this moment.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Now, my wife and I, it's the fall.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: We're not big TV watchers, but we we we do set aside time every week to watch the British baking show.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: And and through this, we have learned a lot about baking.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: I have no skill in the baking department, but but I at least know things.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: If you can't do, at least know.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Don't let that be your only takeaway this morning, but just you know, chew on that for a little bit.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: But but we have these pictures of leaven, and throughout the Old Testament, leaven almost, like yeast, rising agents, things like that, it is used as a metaphor for sin throughout the Old Testament.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: It's this idea that this little thing can come, it can take root in your life, it can it can stretch, it can, it can expand, it can affect everything about the person, everything about ourselves.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: And Jesus here in this moment says, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, beware of the leaven of Herod.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: What Jesus is trying to say in this moment is beware of the fact that the world is going to influence your faith.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Beware of worldly influences dictating your faith, dictating your truth, dictating your rationality, dictating all these things.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Because you you look at the Pharisees, that these are highly pious religious leaders that value tradition over all else, and demanded signs from Jesus.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: They demanded a sign, they demanded a sign.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: And almost in the same way, the disciples are here in this moment, like kind of demanding a sign, like in a little bit, like, Jesus, help us fix this, solve this equation for us.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: That you have the Pharisees, you also have Herod, who is just an evil dude, like a bad leader.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Again, you've got these two, these two factions, these two people that Jesus says in this moment, don't be like them.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Because what are they experiencing?
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: They are showing that throughout all their lives they have they have rejected the authority, they have rejected the belief that Jesus is who he says he is.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: They've rejected the understanding that Jesus is Lord.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: And that is something that we need to be careful that we don't fall into that same trap.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: When life gets hard, far far greater than just being hungry.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: But when life gets hard, when life gets scary, when life gets difficult, when life gets trying, that we don't sit here and we start and our rationality looks like that of the world and not that of faith, and not that of the Lord, and not that of a risen Savior who can solve the things that we are facing.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: And so Jesus gives them this warning.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: He then almost gives them a second chance, verse 16.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: He tells them this, and then they began discussing with one another again the fact that they had no bread.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: And so then Jesus is going to explain to them further in verse 17.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: Jesus is aware of this.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: He says to them, Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread?
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: Do you not perceive?
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Do you not understand?
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Are your hearts hardened?
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Do you have eyes, but yet you don't see?
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Do you have ears, but yet you don't hear?
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: And do you not remember?
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: I want to set a moment here and drop anchor in this.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: That phrase that Jesus asks there to these disciples, I think is the same thing that he asks us here today.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Do you not remember?
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Because here in this boat, the disciples' problem is not the disobedience that they didn't pack, food for the journey.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: The problem of the disciples is not even the disobedience that they're afraid of their circumstances, that their circumstances are greater than their faith in this moment.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: The problem that the disciples are facing in this moment, quite literally, is this that they forgot.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: They forgot what Jesus had done.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: They forgot who Jesus was.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: They forgot the power that they have seen demonstrated up to this point.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: They forgot these things.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: And in studying this, one thing that I have come to find is that memory, guys, is such a beautiful gift from the Lord.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: It is such an incredible thing.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: And you see that throughout scripture, that like in the Old Testament, that God would do these mighty, awesome, incredible things.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: And what it would he instruct his followers to do is stop, build an altar, worship, reflect on the things he did.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Or like a lot of times you'll go to church, you'll see the Lord's Supper table, and there'll be like etched in there, like this do what?
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: In remembrance of me.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: This idea of memory for the believer in our faith journey is so vitally important.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: And memory is a very peculiar thing.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: I am on record that I have like, quote unquote, an exceptional memory.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: And I'm not just saying that to like brag.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: I'm saying that because like I have empirical evidence with us.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: So when I was in school, when I was in college, I had to take 12 hours of upper division level psychology for my degree.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: Now, fun fact, uh Hunter did not, one thing I do remember Hunter did not do well in 12 hours of upper division level psychology.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: I I do have the degree, I made it by the grace of God, but but but we we did it, we did an exercise one time, a memory exercise.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: And there was this like story that the that the professor would tell us, and then we had to hear it just one time and recite it back.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: But there were like 20 very fine details in said story.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: So it's not like the person wrote a love note, it's like the person wrote a love note in red ink with their left hand.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: You see what I'm saying?
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: And so on average, people, when they would do this test, would on average people get like 13 to 14 right.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: I stood before a class and I got 18 of them right.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: And the professor looked at me and said, Hunter, you have such an incredible memory.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: I said, Well, thank you.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: She said, How are you struggling in this class?
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: I said, like, mysteries.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't understand.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Like, like it's weird.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: Like, I like I have good memory, I promise I do, but then also, like men, like there'll be times that our wives will send us to the store for three things, we'll come back with five and forget two of the things that we were actually supposed to be there for.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Can we agree on that?
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: But but but memory is special to us, isn't it?
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: Y'all, we're we're we're in the holiday season, and we're gonna unbox Christmas decorations and we're gonna do things like that.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Does anybody have like a an old hand-me-down from a loved one in the past that that has special sentimental value?
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: This is a hand-raising kind of thing.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: We're gonna be those kind of Baptists this morning, right?
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Like we know that.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: We we feel that.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Or like we're gonna we're gonna start baking, right?
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna bake this this dish that like was made from a loved one in the past that like as try as hard as you try it, still never gonna taste quite as good as mammal.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Can we agree on those?
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Like, like memory is important.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: That smell that brings back memories, that's just so sweet.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Men, we we let's be real here.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Men, who has a trophy, a game ball, a something like that that reminds us of our glory days?
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Just men, okay.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: I say men, there was a few years ago that uh Kentucky, because I'm from Kentucky, y'all know this.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: If you didn't, that's part of my identity, and I wear it on my sleeve apparently.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: But like Kentucky in volleyball was in the national championship game, and Sarah and I sat down to watch it, and Sarah played high school volleyball, and the whole time was just regaling tales of her athletic prowess and the time that she did this, and the time that she and I was just like reflecting, I was like, this is what it's like to watch football with me.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: The roles are reversed.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: This is sweet.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: It's this moment.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Like, like, memory is important.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: We love memory.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: And Jesus is appealing to the disciples in this moment about that memory.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Because Jesus is appealing to them, saying, like, have you forgotten what just happened?
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: You're you're worried about food, you're worried about bread.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Have you forgotten what I have done already?
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: See, like, we we talk about memory and it's a really sweet thing, it's a really warm, fuzzy thing, we like that, but at the same time, like on the flip side, and we're not gonna have to raise hands or anything like that, but like, can we all agree there are also things that we would love to forget?
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Or there's things that we would love to take back, or or things said in the heat of a moment we we love to walk back and undo.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Like, like memory is important, but in this moment, these disciples have suffered from short-term memory loss.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: They have they have forgotten who Jesus was, they have forgotten the power that they have seen Jesus show in these moments.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: And so Jesus continues, verse 19, and he's walking the disciples through these things.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: He said, When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: And I I love Jesus in this moment, like he's forcing them to fess up in this moment.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: And I imagine, like, if I'm a disciple, I'm like 12.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: But but he's he's walking them through, he's making them see in this moment how many baskets did we take up?
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: They said, 12.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Verse 20, and seven for the 4,000, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: And he said to them, seven.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: And he asked them, he said, Do you not understand?
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Do you not see what I have done?
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: You know, you sit here and you look at the disciples in this moment, and it's like, man, these are the disciples, though.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Like, how how did they, like these guys who were gonna go off later on and like plant churches and and were sent out two by two to evangelize and boldly stood before people and professed the gospel and and baptized and healed and all these things.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: How did these guys in particular in this moment, how do these great giants of the faith find such little faith in this moment?
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: And I think what happened to the disciples, I think what happens to us so often than not, is they forgot.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: Or their faith is now directed in a different way.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Because I think all of us here, man, like we have great big old faith.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: I truly believe that, man.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Like, we believe that God can heal, we believe that God can do great things, we believe that God can fix what is broken, we believe God can heal what is broken, what is sick, what is hurting.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: We believe all these things for other people, and then it comes to us.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: And all of a sudden, we're gonna be the exception to that rule.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: All of a sudden, now I'm the one in need, and all of a sudden, my problems are too big.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Or my view of God's power is too small.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Or we we we think this is generous thinking, like everybody else's problems are so much bigger than my own, and God can't possibly be concerned about these things.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: And all of a sudden, we have this moment where we are in desperate need of hope, of salvation, of providence, of healing, of all these things, and our faith gets so very small.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: And Jesus has walked with these disciples with a first hand, first front row seat through all these things, and he asks them and he walks them through.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Guys, do you remember what I have done?
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Do you remember what you have seen?
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Do you remember the things that I have demonstrated?
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Do you remember the things that I have said?
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Looking back on our lives, do you remember the times where we were hurting and the Lord still provided a way out?
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: Do we remember when we were in the valley and he shepherded us through the way out?
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Do we remember when we were in need of hope and he gave us community?
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: He gave us answers, he gave us fill-in-the-blank, whatever that is.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Do you remember those things for our lives?
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: And we talked about it, man, memory's great.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of things at the same time with memory that we would love to forget.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: The thing that we cannot afford to forget in our day-to-day lives as believers, as Christians, is that Jesus can do for us as he does for others.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Is that Jesus has proven himself time and time and time again that he is faithful, that he is just, that he is constant.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: One of my favorite things that I have I have learned about Jesus in in my Time of study and my time of learning about him in my 33, some odd years, going on 34, that's rough to say.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: All that to say, like the things that I have learned throughout these things, is one thing that the Lord is unchanging.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: That he is steady, that he is steadfast, which means that we can rely, which means that we can trust, which means that we don't have to worry about him changing his mind, which means we don't have to worry about him falling out of love with us, that we don't have to worry about those things, that he is true, that he is constant, that he is set.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: And so, how do we fight against this doubt?
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: How do we fight against this feeling that Jesus doesn't care about us?
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: How do we fight against this feeling that our circumstances are so much bigger?
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Like I'd love to wave a magic wand and like here's your three steps to do this thing.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: But I think more importantly than that is that we just stop for just a second and we listen to the truth that Jesus tells us here to the disciples and also to us.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Verse 17.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Jesus was aware of their doubts, Jesus was aware of their hurt, Jesus was aware of their insecurities, he was aware of their anxieties, and what does he say?
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: He's aware of this, and he said, Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread?
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Do you not perceive?
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: Do you not understand?
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Are your hearts hardened?
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Having eyes, do you not see?
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Having ears, do you not hear?
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Do you not remember?
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: They said, twelve, and seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: And they said to him, Seven.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: And he said, Do you not yet understand?
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Do you not see that I have proven myself time and time and time and time and time again?
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: And church, if we're if we're gonna be really honest, and I I don't know, a room this size, we've all got things we're facing, we've got things that we're we're struggling with, we've all got things that we're carrying, but if we would stop in the moment and look back, we would see his faithfulness throughout our entire lives.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: We would see those things.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Now, look, I'm I'm from Upton, Kentucky.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Okay?
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Upton, Kentucky's incredible.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: It's like a time machine.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: You go there and you're like 20 years in the past.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: It's small town Kentucky.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: We just got dialed up internet, it's incredible, you know.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: And and I love like I love the band, I love the worship, I love the new stuff, I love all those things.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: But there's always gonna be a part of Hunter Smith, guys, that I'm I'm I'm the little chubby bucktooth kid in Upton, Kentucky, in Upton Baptist Church, that my mom played the piano, I sat on the pew behind the piano, Miss Imo sat on the pew behind me to keep me in line.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: But but we had these old things, okay?
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Um it it was it was a book and it said Baptist hymnal really big on it.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Ours were blue.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: And let me tell you something, like Hunter is not musical, but but I learned some things.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: I learned how to like I learned how to read, like I learned how to read music, I learned how to how to understand some things like that.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: But but but man, like you could take that hymnal and just open it up and read rich, meaningful theology today that is still true, that is still applicable to our lives, and you talk about the faithfulness of the Lord, like the truth is this like if we stop and we reflect on him, we see this this faithfulness and this this this statement of faith that we have sang for generations and generations and generations.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Not good is your faithfulness, not okay is your faithfulness, not kind of decent is your faithfulness.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Those would be terrible songs.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: But what we have instead is we have, what is it, church?
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: What's the what's the word that describes it?
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: It is great is thy faithfulness.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: You know, great is I I have cheaters, like don't like great is thy faithfulness, O Lord, O God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with thee.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: As thou hast been, thou forever will be.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: Great is thy faithfulness, great is thy faithfulness, morning by morning, new mercies I see.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: All that I have needed, your hand has provided.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: I'm realizing now James Lewis is here, you would have sang that, wouldn't you?
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: I'm not that person.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: But that that phrase, great is your faithfulness.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: And one of the cool things, again, if you you you study hymnals, you study hymns, you see that a lot of these hymns were written in birth out of deep personal groaning and hurt and pain and trauma.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: Not the case here.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Because this one was written by an elderly man on his deathbed, reflecting on his life.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: And what is the thing that he is reminded of in this moment as he looks upon all of his life is this great is the faithfulness of the Lord.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Church, I don't know who you are.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: I don't I know who some of y'all are, I don't know what you're facing, I don't know the things you're going through, I don't know the peace that you need.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know the weight that you carry.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: I don't know the struggles that you're facing.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know what tomorrow holds.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: I wish I could tell you.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: I don't know what those things are, but here's the thing that the Lord has shown us time and time and time again is that he is a God who is faithful.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: He is a God who provides, he is a God who loves, and he is a God that that nature of him is unchanging in all these things.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: And I would just ask you in a moment as we as we pray, as we we close things out, that we're gonna take a moment of silence before we pray and just think about life for a second, and just think about the times that we have we have cried ourselves to sleep, that we have we have we we have hurt, we have grown, we have been in pain.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: And those were times in the past, but we have seen how the Lord has shepherded us through those and how he can continue to do that today as well.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: That you can know him, you can trust him, you can you can you can offer these things to him.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: You you see the difference in the disciples here in this moment and what happened earlier in these miracles that he performed about feeding 5,000, feeding 4,000.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: What ended up happening is they ended up having to give the bread, they ended up having to give those things into the hand of Jesus to do with.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: To do with it as he deems fit.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Man, maybe, maybe that is our responsibility, maybe that is our response here in this place, is we just take everything we have, we place it in the hands of the Lord and say, and do what you need to do, provide a way out, fix it, do whatever you need to do.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: But church, above all else, as we leave this place, we leave hopeful, we leave excited, we we we leave, we leave joyful having been in the house, Lord, but we leave most of all reminded of who he is, that he is somebody who can save.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: Let's pray together.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Lord God, we we we have talked about it this morning and we we have seen and we have experienced hopefully a lot of us in our lives that we we have experienced your faithfulness firsthand.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Lord, Lord, we have we we have felt your loving touch.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: We have felt your peace in circumstances where where just chaos reigns and all these things.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: We we have felt and we have experienced those things.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Lord, for those that are hurting, those that are anxious, those that are struggling, God, that we would reflect on that peace and it would cure our hearts, it would calm our hearts during this time, Lord.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: God, you make a way out when all hope seems lost, when all logic seems illogical in those moments, that you you provide a way out for us, Lord.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: God, you you you you did it through sending your son to die on the cross, that we might know that this time spent on this earth is gonna be the hardest things we will face in the scope of eternity, because you have conquered sin, you have rose from the grave, you have won the victory for us.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: And for those that place their hearts and their trust and their hope in you, as we we place that in your hands, in your faithful hands, that you can provide a way out for us, Lord.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: God, we love you.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: We pray these things in your name.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening to this week's sermon.
