Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to episode one of Revellio for September fifth,
- 0:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty four.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I'm Amy, I'm Nicole, I'm Tom.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Welcome to our first episode. It's been a long time coming. Yeah.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I got my Taylor Swift shirt on right now too.
- 0:44Speaker 3: That was perfect.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Oh see, I knew I could. So since it is
- 0:51Speaker 1: our first episode, we wanted to go through and introduce
- 0:54Speaker 1: ourselves to all of you listeners and also explain what
- 0:59Speaker 1: the show's at because you're probably wondering unless you read
- 1:03Speaker 1: the brief synopsis before downloading, which I hope you did.
- 1:09Speaker 1: But let's just go through in each of us introduce ourselves,
- 1:14Speaker 1: your name, your house, where you're from, any other important
- 1:18Speaker 1: information that we should know. So I guess I'll go
- 1:22Speaker 1: first and just kick us off. I'm Amy, I'm a
- 1:26Speaker 1: Hufflepuff and I am from Upstate New York. And this
- 1:32Speaker 1: is not my first podcast, so if you found us
- 1:36Speaker 1: through the Speak Beastie socials, that is my podcasting background
- 1:42Speaker 1: right there. I produced and hosted Speak Beastie, a Fantastic
- 1:47Speaker 1: beast podcast for several years, and I also hosted Promptly
- 1:52Speaker 1: Potter as well. So I'll go next.
- 1:56Speaker 3: So I am in Nicole, and I am in Slytherin Howey.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I'm also from upstate New York, so right by Amy,
- 2:04Speaker 3: And this is my first time hosting and producing a podcast.
- 2:08Speaker 3: But i am not a stranger to podcasting at all.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I've been listening to Speak Beastie and all those other
- 2:15Speaker 3: Potter podcasts you probably know for the last I don't
- 2:18Speaker 3: even know.
- 2:19Speaker 4: It seems like a decade, probably longer. It's probably definitely actually, yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 4: definitely longer. My Son's a time is so off, you know,
- 2:26Speaker 4: as you get older.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm so used to saying like ten years ago,
- 2:29Speaker 1: but now I'm realizing things are like twenty years ago.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, okay, so I'll guess I'll go. I'm
- 2:40Speaker 5: the last. So I'm Tom. I'm from Gryffindor. I am
- 2:45Speaker 5: from Argentina, but I'm currently based in Yuguay. And yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 5: i'm a little I'm a little far from you guys.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, but our time sounds actually work out.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It's not Yeah, it's not that bad.
- 2:58Speaker 5: It's one hour difference, so we're good. And yeah, it's
- 3:02Speaker 5: my first time podcasting, so I'm very excited. As excited
- 3:07Speaker 5: as I am, I'm also terrified because yeah, it's a
- 3:10Speaker 5: new experience, but hey, here's here's the new chapters.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Absolutely, whoa we we're.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Morphing into each other. Uh So then your next question
- 3:29Speaker 1: is probably what the heck is Revellio and what is
- 3:33Speaker 1: this show going to cover? We have answers to that,
- 3:39Speaker 1: so Ravellio, this podcast is going to be a place
- 3:43Speaker 1: to discuss all things Wizarding World, from revisiting the books
- 3:47Speaker 1: and the movies, to theme park expansions, to video games,
- 3:51Speaker 1: to the upcoming TV show and so much more. Pretty much,
- 3:55Speaker 1: whatever comes up we're down to talk about. There's a
- 3:58Speaker 1: lot to discuss still with the materials that we do
- 4:02Speaker 1: have out and so much more still coming, so we're
- 4:07Speaker 1: excited to be able to talk about it. This episode
- 4:12Speaker 1: will be a bit of an introduction to what the
- 4:14Speaker 1: show is, who we are, and what you can expect.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But first.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Rule listening to w W in the Wizarding Wireless Network.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Now for the latest headlines.
- 4:30Speaker 3: So a lot of this news you may already be
- 4:33Speaker 3: familiar with, as we're obviously playing a little bit of
- 4:36Speaker 3: catch up here since so much news has happened this
- 4:38Speaker 3: summer before we launch, but still wanted to cover it.
- 4:41Speaker 4: You know, maybe it might be new to you.
- 4:44Speaker 3: So starting off, we've gotten some news related to the
- 4:47Speaker 3: upcoming currently untitled Harry Potter TV show. In an article
- 4:52Speaker 3: in Variety in June, it was revealed that the show
- 4:55Speaker 3: got an upgrade from a Max exclusive to an HBO original.
- 5:00Speaker 3: So what does this mean? You know, this means it
- 5:02Speaker 3: won't be limited to the streaming service. It could be
- 5:05Speaker 3: aired on traditional TV and it kind of puts it
- 5:08Speaker 3: really up into that caliber of shows like Game of
- 5:11Speaker 3: Thrones and House of the Dragon that have really come
- 5:13Speaker 3: to known as HBO originals. We also learned back in
- 5:17Speaker 3: June that the show has found its showrunner, so Francesca
- 5:22Speaker 3: Gardiner was named as showrunner and executive producer. She's not
- 5:26Speaker 3: new to the Max HBO family. She's worked as a
- 5:29Speaker 3: producer on Succession and His Dark Materials, which can also
- 5:33Speaker 3: be found on the platform. We definitely have plans to
- 5:37Speaker 3: talk a lot more in depth on a later episode
- 5:39Speaker 3: about all we know so far about the show. You know,
- 5:42Speaker 3: there's still a lot of casting announcements to come, but
- 5:45Speaker 3: we have learned who several of the show's producers will be,
- 5:48Speaker 3: as well as some of the directors.
- 5:50Speaker 4: So more to come on that.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'm actually really excited to see this now. I loved
- 5:56Speaker 1: His Dark Materials and that's I don't know, that's like
- 6:01Speaker 1: kind of the direction I want to see the show go.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So I'm really excited that someone involved in that is
- 6:06Speaker 1: now involved in the Harry Potter one, just because I
- 6:09Speaker 1: think that was such a good adaptation of the books
- 6:13Speaker 1: and that just visually worked really well. So I'm excited.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I want to see what she does.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I have not watched any of her work.
- 6:22Speaker 3: His Dark Materials has been on my to watch list
- 6:24Speaker 3: for probably a while, but it's definitely Yeah, like you said,
- 6:28Speaker 3: I think having somebody who's not unfamiliar to that adaptation world,
- 6:34Speaker 3: and I feel like the genres are probably pretty similar
- 6:37Speaker 3: as well, So hopefully fingers crossed this was a good choice.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, And I know there's been some talk about
- 6:46Speaker 1: how this will be I think her first time as
- 6:50Speaker 1: an actual showrunner. I forget what her involvement with His
- 6:53Speaker 1: Dark Materials was, but it wasn't as a showrunner, so
- 6:57Speaker 1: I think that's interesting. That's an interesting way to go
- 7:00Speaker 1: with a somewhat newcomer in that way, I.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Think, Yeah, taking on a very big project for sure,
- 7:07Speaker 3: So yes, so excited for that.
- 7:12Speaker 4: We also have a lot of exciting theme park news, so.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Yeah, start about you know you guys, but the theme
- 7:19Speaker 3: parks are my jam. Oh yeah, so this is so
- 7:23Speaker 3: this is so exciting. So Universe Orlando is, you know,
- 7:28Speaker 3: getting that expansion of Epic Universe, And we got a
- 7:32Speaker 3: lot of details this summer about the Wizarding Paris section
- 7:35Speaker 3: of the park. We've seen renderings of the streets and
- 7:39Speaker 3: the Ministry of Magic Ride Q was also released and
- 7:43Speaker 3: it looks amazing and it looks so good and like
- 7:46Speaker 3: we knew that it would because you know, the other
- 7:48Speaker 3: parks look amazing, but yeah, I'm kind of like even
- 7:53Speaker 3: more blown away and like I think it looks even
- 7:55Speaker 3: more amazing than I think I even imagined.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Did you guys see the picture of it at night?
- 8:02Speaker 1: Like I'll lit up?
- 8:03Speaker 2: I have not the conceptual art.
- 8:06Speaker 1: No, there's like actual aerial view photos that somebody took
- 8:13Speaker 1: and you can see all the buildings lit up and everything,
- 8:15Speaker 1: and it just.
- 8:15Speaker 2: It looks so I think I saw it.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like a city.
- 8:18Speaker 5: I think I saw something firework from like a test
- 8:21Speaker 5: for fireworks.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Is it probably that.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I didn't see that one? But yeah, it was just
- 8:28Speaker 1: like an aerial view of the Paris streets and the
- 8:35Speaker 1: Ministry building. Yeah, but if you google it, like Wizarding
- 8:43Speaker 1: Paris aerial view at night, you'll probably see it. But
- 8:46Speaker 1: it looks so cool. I can't wait for this park.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I yeah, I just googled it so that I can
- 8:51Speaker 3: pull it off after we're done recording. But yeah, and
- 8:55Speaker 3: I think, like I feel like when we first like
- 8:58Speaker 3: found out that we were getting that, I like maybe
- 9:01Speaker 3: had like I don't know, maybe a little bit of
- 9:03Speaker 3: reservations because I think like, obviously, you know, it's very
- 9:06Speaker 3: like fantastic beast driven, you know, having it being focused
- 9:09Speaker 3: around you know, Paris, and of course we have just
- 9:12Speaker 3: great you know, feeling like you're stepping right into the
- 9:15Speaker 3: story with how they did you know, Hogsmeade and diagon
- 9:18Speaker 3: Alley and just kind of having this area that's maybe
- 9:21Speaker 3: not as like familiar, kind of reminds me a little
- 9:25Speaker 3: bit of like Galaxy's Edge, like from this area that's
- 9:27Speaker 3: like in this.
- 9:28Speaker 4: World but you know you're not super familiar with.
- 9:30Speaker 3: But I was really glad to hear that, like, you know,
- 9:32Speaker 3: the Ministry of Magic that we like know and love
- 9:35Speaker 3: was also going to be part of it, so that
- 9:37Speaker 3: there's really that familiar piece too.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's also interesting because we were talking about
- 9:43Speaker 5: two different timelines, so it's one is set in like
- 9:46Speaker 5: in the nineteen twenties and the other one is set
- 9:49Speaker 5: like in the nineties. So it's like it's it's it's
- 9:52Speaker 5: in contrast there, like we're going to go from the
- 9:55Speaker 5: past to the present, and it's such an interesting concept
- 10:00Speaker 5: and I'm so like intrigued to see how they're going
- 10:03Speaker 5: to pull that out. And yeah, like I'm really excited
- 10:07Speaker 5: to visit the Ministry. Like anything, when you go to
- 10:09Speaker 5: the Wizarding World, you get to experience it firsthand and
- 10:13Speaker 5: you get to see everything like on actual scale. So
- 10:18Speaker 5: we only got like little bits of the Ministry of
- 10:20Speaker 5: Magic at the studio tour or you know, like very
- 10:24Speaker 5: small pieces of sets. But this is going to be
- 10:26Speaker 5: like a full size replica, and it's going to be
- 10:29Speaker 5: so exciting. Like whenever you come into these places, it
- 10:32Speaker 5: doesn't feel like a set. It feels like you're literally
- 10:34Speaker 5: thrown into the world. So like anything that Universal has
- 10:38Speaker 5: done in the past, I'm sure they will not disappoint
- 10:41Speaker 5: and I'm really looking forward to all of it.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean and even like, yeah, I'm just excited
- 10:47Speaker 3: for Epic Universe, like in general, like obviously, you know,
- 10:51Speaker 3: especially this part, but the whole land in general just
- 10:53Speaker 3: looks so awesome and definitely I think will be a
- 10:58Speaker 3: great thing for Universal. Yeah, and I mean we did
- 11:03Speaker 3: learn too. You know, we are going to have you know,
- 11:05Speaker 3: some people come back. So Eddie Redmain is already set
- 11:08Speaker 3: to return, is new we're gonna have. Yeah, we're gonna
- 11:11Speaker 3: have the Golden Trio Onmbridge is going to be the
- 11:15Speaker 3: star of the show. It sounds like it's so weird,
- 11:18Speaker 3: but it's it's so weird, but I.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Know, and it isn't it great that it's post deathly
- 11:24Speaker 5: Hollows So we're literally getting content that is you know
- 11:28Speaker 5: that happens after the war, which we've never really quite
- 11:30Speaker 5: gotten it, so we could Whenever I thought of Ministry
- 11:34Speaker 5: of Magic, I would have thought, Okay, this is Harry's
- 11:35Speaker 5: audience in the Ministry of Magic. You know, it's his hearing,
- 11:38Speaker 5: it's his you know, like it's probably going to revolve
- 11:41Speaker 5: around that. But the fact that it's a completely new
- 11:43Speaker 5: take on you know, a new piece of information or
- 11:47Speaker 5: whether it's canon or not, but it's something really exciting
- 11:50Speaker 5: because it's it's you know, it moves the story forward
- 11:55Speaker 5: in some ways.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really interesting.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I think it'll be nice too, just to see because
- 12:03Speaker 3: obviously we get so much like focused on Baltimore and
- 12:06Speaker 3: like obviously you know, Escape from Gringod. You know, it's
- 12:09Speaker 3: you know, all about him and Bellatrix and there are
- 12:12Speaker 3: always like our villains that we see, and so I
- 12:14Speaker 3: think it'll be really cool, you know, to have Unbridge
- 12:17Speaker 3: And of course, you know, we don't know yet, you know,
- 12:21Speaker 3: if the actress who played her is coming back to
- 12:23Speaker 3: reprise her role.
- 12:23Speaker 4: I really hope so.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Because she's amazing and you know, what will happen with
- 12:28Speaker 3: the Golden Trio. We really hope we don't have another
- 12:33Speaker 3: Hermione moment. You know, if you're not familiar and haven't
- 12:38Speaker 3: been to Universal, there, Emma Watson hadn't come back to
- 12:42Speaker 3: like do voiceover work for the train and so there
- 12:46Speaker 3: was like another actress who kind of did that and.
- 12:50Speaker 4: It wasn't that it wasn't the best impression.
- 12:54Speaker 1: They did replace that though.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Yeah, they have replaced it so much better. Yeah, so
- 13:00Speaker 4: hopefully it'll all be good.
- 13:02Speaker 3: And yeah, so what we don't know yet what will
- 13:06Speaker 3: happen with that, so more to come with that, and obviously,
- 13:10Speaker 3: you know, hopefully, I mean clearly, we're all so excited
- 13:14Speaker 3: about this, so we're definitely going to be having you know,
- 13:16Speaker 3: an upcoming episode where we can talk more in depth
- 13:18Speaker 3: about this, and you know, I'm sure in the next
- 13:21Speaker 3: couple of months we're just going to start to get
- 13:23Speaker 3: you know, more and more information about it now that
- 13:25Speaker 3: the big reveal has happened. Yeah, for sure, and to
- 13:31Speaker 3: kind of I guess on a sad note, now we
- 13:33Speaker 3: just went from being so excited to the next bit
- 13:36Speaker 3: of news is quite sad. So we learned that Mina
- 13:40Speaker 3: Lima has not been contracted to continue on with their
- 13:44Speaker 3: illustrated editions of the Harry Potter series, and big sad
- 13:51Speaker 3: face on this one.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Of course, We've had this happen before.
- 13:54Speaker 3: You know, with John Kay, but I think that was
- 13:57Speaker 3: very different, right because he like he stepped away from it,
- 14:02Speaker 3: and he needed to step away.
- 14:04Speaker 4: And this just feels very shocking the best word.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I can think of, because you know, men A Lima
- 14:12Speaker 3: is so vital to everything Wizarding World.
- 14:16Speaker 4: You know, it's like, yeah, it's like so much that
- 14:19Speaker 4: we so.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Many things in your brain when you visualize things in
- 14:22Speaker 3: the universe, is you visualize it that way because of
- 14:26Speaker 3: Mina Lima and how they designed it for the films.
- 14:29Speaker 3: And I don't know about you guys, but like they're illustrated.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Editions are like my favorite versions also they illustrated.
- 14:35Speaker 4: They're so good and they're so cool.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And yeah, I'm really bummed about this, Like not even
- 14:41Speaker 3: just because it won't be like a full complete set,
- 14:43Speaker 3: Like I feel like we're never going to get a
- 14:45Speaker 3: full complete set that's like the same people beginning to end.
- 14:48Speaker 4: But it's like, I just.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Love mean Alima so much and that works so much.
- 14:51Speaker 3: And yeah, I'm still really really surprised about this.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I am too. I mean, they're so, like you said,
- 15:00Speaker 1: just entrenched in this world. It's like crazy to me
- 15:03Speaker 1: that they wouldn't contract them for the rest. But I'm
- 15:09Speaker 1: trying to remember, did their Prisoner of Azkaban edition? Did
- 15:15Speaker 1: that come out before the Secrets of Dumbledore screenplay that
- 15:19Speaker 1: they also did not do.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Oh, that's a good question.
- 15:25Speaker 1: October twenty twenty three.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say that. I think it was
- 15:28Speaker 2: last year.
- 15:29Speaker 4: When came out. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Because I remember it was around like Christmas season that
- 15:34Speaker 3: I feel like I was like, oh, this would be
- 15:36Speaker 3: this would make a good Christmas present.
- 15:40Speaker 4: But yeah, I don't know.
- 15:41Speaker 3: I mean, and I don't know if maybe the start
- 15:43Speaker 3: of like them not doing you know, Secrets of Dumbledore,
- 15:47Speaker 3: which I'll say, I actually haven't bought that because it's
- 15:51Speaker 3: not going to match my others.
- 15:53Speaker 4: I know.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I know the heel of having the screenplay was that
- 15:56Speaker 1: beautiful cover of it.
- 16:00Speaker 3: So I don't know if that was like the beginning
- 16:01Speaker 3: of like then you know, or what happened there. I
- 16:04Speaker 3: think obviously we haven't gotten a lot of details here
- 16:07Speaker 3: except knowing that it doesn't seem like it was me
- 16:10Speaker 3: and a Lima's decision. No, So it's really that's kind
- 16:14Speaker 3: of like it seems like all we know, but it
- 16:18Speaker 3: seems like they're still going to be pretty entrenched with
- 16:21Speaker 3: Harry Potter here.
- 16:22Speaker 4: I know.
- 16:22Speaker 3: There was also an announcement that you can get a
- 16:26Speaker 3: handwritten Hogwarts letter, handwritten by Mirapora, and it's like twenty
- 16:31Speaker 3: five hundred dollars, so I will not be ordering one,
- 16:34Speaker 3: but let me just I.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Was tempted, to be honest, I was in the new
- 16:39Speaker 5: York store a week ago and there was this display
- 16:42Speaker 5: with the letter and they were promoting it. And when
- 16:45Speaker 5: I looked at the price, I was like, Okay, I'll
- 16:47Speaker 5: just look the other way because this is you know,
- 16:49Speaker 5: but I was so tempted to at least be like,
- 16:52Speaker 5: oh what if no, no, it's no way, no way,
- 16:54Speaker 5: like but I mean, it must be such a real
- 16:57Speaker 5: treasure to have that, you know, you're own acceptance letter
- 17:02Speaker 5: from the very you know, creators of the prop itself.
- 17:07Speaker 4: And haven't been handwritten.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Oh you know.
- 17:09Speaker 3: I was so tempted too, And then I saw that
- 17:11Speaker 3: price and then I looked, actually have on the wall
- 17:14Speaker 3: right behind me, I have a it's a replica of
- 17:17Speaker 3: the letter that I actually got at the London studio tour.
- 17:21Speaker 4: They were just you know, giving them out.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I think it maybe it was when they opened where
- 17:25Speaker 3: you could go into private drive and see the fireplace
- 17:29Speaker 3: like I don't remember.
- 17:29Speaker 4: It was so many years ago that I went, but
- 17:31Speaker 4: I have a.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Replica from there, and I'm like, man, it would be
- 17:33Speaker 3: so nice to have like that actual handwritten one.
- 17:35Speaker 4: And then I was like, I can't do.
- 17:37Speaker 1: It, but.
- 17:42Speaker 3: So sad, but we you know, we are still gonna
- 17:46Speaker 3: you know, get we have confirmation that they are still
- 17:49Speaker 3: going to continue with these more interactive editions, which is good.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I love the interactive editions you know so much, and
- 17:58Speaker 3: so I'm glad we're still going to get them and
- 18:00Speaker 3: there still is this plan to finish it, but still sad.
- 18:03Speaker 3: We don't know who that designer is going to be
- 18:06Speaker 3: and like, to be honest, like I just don't think
- 18:08Speaker 3: it's gonna be as good as it would have been
- 18:11Speaker 3: with me and Lima, Like I think that person who
- 18:13Speaker 3: steps in has like the biggest Hagrid sized shoes to
- 18:16Speaker 3: fill And yeah, I don't know I'll buy it because
- 18:22Speaker 3: I already know I'm gonna buy them, but.
- 18:26Speaker 4: I might not like it.
- 18:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I have the first five from the Jim K
- 18:31Speaker 5: is it Jim K Right editions?
- 18:33Speaker 3: Oh my god, I called oh geez, I called him
- 18:35Speaker 3: John K earlier, didn't I.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Ye, Jim K.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Sorry Joe, Sorry Jim.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Yeah, So I have the first five, but I know
- 18:43Speaker 5: he won't be continuing, So it's like, Okay, how is
- 18:47Speaker 5: my collection going to look afterwards? Like the same thing's
- 18:50Speaker 5: gonna happen with these editions, this illustrated interactive editions, Like
- 18:54Speaker 5: how will they look like it's gonna look inconsistent. The
- 18:57Speaker 5: one thing that looks like that secrets a double doore screen.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Yeah no, I can't tell you. It does not look good.
- 19:03Speaker 5: No, no, yeah, so it's a it's a pity bookshelves
- 19:09Speaker 5: come on.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:13Speaker 5: So moving on to more uplifting news. At the end
- 19:17Speaker 5: of August, we got a trailer for a new video
- 19:19Speaker 5: game called Harry Potter Quidditch Champions, where you can be
- 19:22Speaker 5: that star quidditch player that you've always wanted to be.
- 19:26Speaker 5: We learned in the trailer that you can play as
- 19:28Speaker 5: iconic characters like Harry, Draco Ron, or even create your
- 19:32Speaker 5: own original character. It looks like places from both the
- 19:35Speaker 5: movies and the books will be included in the game,
- 19:38Speaker 5: and the game was available digitally starting September third for Xbox,
- 19:43Speaker 5: PC and PlayStation, but it looks like physical editions as
- 19:47Speaker 5: well as a Nintendo Switch version will be coming in
- 19:50Speaker 5: later this year, which is very exciting too.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Yay, I'm excited about this game. It reminds me so
- 19:58Speaker 1: much of the Quidditch World game from the two thousands.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I play that game.
- 20:03Speaker 1: That game.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm surprised that it's like actually kind of like
- 20:09Speaker 3: taken this long for us to get like a Quidditch
- 20:11Speaker 3: style game. It seems like that would have been like
- 20:14Speaker 3: the very first thing like that we would have gotten,
- 20:16Speaker 3: like with this new iteration of like port Key games
- 20:18Speaker 3: and you know, everything that's coming out. But yeah, I'm
- 20:21Speaker 3: excited too because I think obviously Quiditch just fits. I
- 20:25Speaker 3: think the video game esthetic so well definitely, And I
- 20:30Speaker 3: love that we're still going to have like characters that
- 20:33Speaker 3: we're familiar with, but also you know, be able to
- 20:35Speaker 3: create your own character as well. And yeah, I'm excited
- 20:39Speaker 3: for this. I'm I mean, I'm probably gonna wait and
- 20:42Speaker 3: get it on the Switch because it just seems like
- 20:43Speaker 3: a game that would be really good, like handheld and
- 20:46Speaker 3: on the go. So a little sad that I'll have
- 20:49Speaker 3: to wait a little bit, but that's okay.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Us Switch people always have to wait.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Yeah we do.
- 20:56Speaker 3: I mean I could get it on PlayStation, but I
- 20:58Speaker 3: just I feel like it'll be good on the Switch and.
- 21:02Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, looking forward to that.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yeah, exciting.
- 21:08Speaker 5: So moving on from the Wizard and Archive has been
- 21:12Speaker 5: released in two volumes. These are a compilation of original
- 21:16Speaker 5: writings from JK.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Rowling.
- 21:18Speaker 5: So it looks like it will be mostly old poet. Oh,
- 21:22Speaker 5: so it looks like it will be mostly old potter
- 21:24Speaker 5: More writings, but there may be some new information as
- 21:27Speaker 5: well as a forward written by Evonna Lynch. It's going
- 21:30Speaker 5: to be available in ebook and audiobook form, so yeah,
- 21:36Speaker 5: I'm I'm looking forward to this, to be honest.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I got my audiobook. I pre ordered it and
- 21:43Speaker 3: so I got it. Haven't started listening to it yet,
- 21:45Speaker 3: but I think it's always nice to have things like
- 21:49Speaker 3: that in a compilation form, because it can be hard,
- 21:52Speaker 3: I think to sometimes like find everything on like a
- 21:55Speaker 3: website and like did I read everything? And obviously, you know,
- 21:58Speaker 3: these were writings that came out a while go, and
- 22:00Speaker 3: so it's kind of nice, like I know when like
- 22:03Speaker 3: they first came out, like I read them, and I
- 22:07Speaker 3: have the original three books when they first did the compilation,
- 22:11Speaker 3: which it looks like the second volume of this from
- 22:15Speaker 3: the Wigeoning Archives is essentially those three books that were
- 22:18Speaker 3: released previously, So if you already have those, you might
- 22:22Speaker 3: not necessarily need to buy the full volume. You could
- 22:24Speaker 3: just get you know, volume one, But it looks like
- 22:27Speaker 3: volume one is kind of the other writings that were
- 22:30Speaker 3: never kind of included in like a published form, So
- 22:33Speaker 3: I mean it's always nice to have everything all together
- 22:36Speaker 3: as one so you can kind of read through it
- 22:38Speaker 3: and you know you're.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Not missing anything.
- 22:41Speaker 3: And I think this one's exciting because obviously, you know,
- 22:44Speaker 3: with Avana, like you know, coming in and writing the
- 22:47Speaker 3: foreword and also being involved in the audiobook and just
- 22:50Speaker 3: having it as an audiobook I think is great too.
- 22:52Speaker 3: I think like these short kind of stories like work
- 22:55Speaker 3: so well as an audiobook because you're not sitting there
- 22:58Speaker 3: like I need to listen to this for five hours straight.
- 23:01Speaker 3: You know, you can kind of just listen to it
- 23:02Speaker 3: as you want to. So I'm excited to start listening
- 23:06Speaker 3: to it.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say I'm disappointed it's not an actual print, Yeah, exactly,
- 23:12Speaker 1: because I would like to have a physical book, But
- 23:16Speaker 1: I will take what I can get.
- 23:18Speaker 3: So we're definitely planning to talk about this more later
- 23:21Speaker 3: after we kind of all have had a chance to
- 23:23Speaker 3: get caught up on all of it and listen to
- 23:25Speaker 3: everything and get some more to come with us.
- 23:27Speaker 1: For sure. Yeah, definitely.
- 23:31Speaker 2: So last, but not least and on you know more.
- 23:37Speaker 5: A sadder news again, Harry Potter, Magic Awakened will be
- 23:43Speaker 5: closing in the Americas, Europe and Oceania territories on October
- 23:48Speaker 5: twenty nine, twenty twenty four, and it was already removed
- 23:52Speaker 5: from the App Store on August twenty six, so the
- 23:55Speaker 5: game will continue to be available for players in Asia,
- 23:58Speaker 5: including China, these Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as
- 24:04Speaker 5: well as others select Asia and m e NA territories.
- 24:08Speaker 5: The game developers didn't really give any reason behind the decision,
- 24:13Speaker 5: but there are a series of theories that point out
- 24:16Speaker 5: to the service being in these regions, being too expensive
- 24:20Speaker 5: and not having enough players to compensate for the losses
- 24:23Speaker 5: and how much it costs. So we will hopefully for
- 24:27Speaker 5: further develop on this as we get new information, but
- 24:31Speaker 5: that's all we know for now, and it's been a
- 24:33Speaker 5: very abrupt change. It's been a very abrupt decision too,
- 24:37Speaker 5: because it only launched a year ago, so, like people
- 24:43Speaker 5: in the comments were very upset to say the least.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not very long, even for a mobile game,
- 24:51Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, all right, Well, that wraps up our news.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Hopefully from this point forward will be a little bit
- 25:00Speaker 1: or up to date on things as we get roll
- 25:03Speaker 1: in here. But it seems like, we really had quite
- 25:06Speaker 1: the summer full of news and announcements, so we wanted
- 25:09Speaker 1: to make sure to at least cover those. So our
- 25:15Speaker 1: main discussion for this episode is again kind of very introductory,
- 25:20Speaker 1: but it's more about reflecting and keeping the magic alive,
- 25:25Speaker 1: which is what we hope to do with this podcast.
- 25:29Speaker 1: So why did we start the show? We all really
- 25:34Speaker 1: found ourselves in the spot where there was so much
- 25:37Speaker 1: negativity surrounding the Wizarding world, and all we really wanted
- 25:41Speaker 1: to do was just enjoy it and discuss it with
- 25:43Speaker 1: other fans. So we really hope that this serves as
- 25:46Speaker 1: a place to foster that community and that you can
- 25:50Speaker 1: relate to some of the rantings here of three friends
- 25:54Speaker 1: just hanging out and being kind of nerdy. So we
- 26:02Speaker 1: are in the year twenty twenty four, but Harry Potter
- 26:05Speaker 1: Love is still alive and well. So let's take a
- 26:08Speaker 1: little trip down memory lane with some numbers here to
- 26:12Speaker 1: reflect back on the craziness that is potter Mania. When
- 26:18Speaker 1: Sorcerer's Stone was first published in nineteen ninety eight, it
- 26:22Speaker 1: had an original printing of fifty thousand copies. Now it
- 26:27Speaker 1: has sold more than one hundred and twenty million copies,
- 26:30Speaker 1: which makes it one of the best selling books of
- 26:33Speaker 1: all time. So from that point in the late nineties,
- 26:39Speaker 1: potter Mania really came on pretty quickly. It seemed almost instantaneous. Really,
- 26:47Speaker 1: midnight release parties started organically. Actually they were organized by
- 26:52Speaker 1: bookstores themselves, not Scholastic, and when word reached Scholastic that
- 26:58Speaker 1: these midnight parties were happening, they provided the bookstores with
- 27:02Speaker 1: giveaway items like lightning bolt, temporary tattoos, bumper stickers, all
- 27:07Speaker 1: that fun stuff.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Man, I missed those midnight release parties too. I have
- 27:13Speaker 3: borders that I miss. Borders to really bring back.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Up some beverteries here Walden Books.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, oh man.
- 27:26Speaker 1: So by the US release of Goblet of Fire, nine
- 27:30Speaker 1: thousand FedEx trucks were used for the sole purpose of
- 27:33Speaker 1: delivering copies of the books to stores in time for
- 27:36Speaker 1: the launch. And this is actually funny. In two thousand
- 27:41Speaker 1: and three, I remember these headlines there was a book
- 27:45Speaker 1: heist in which someone hijacked a trailer full of the
- 27:48Speaker 1: Order of the Phoenix books ahead of their release and
- 27:51Speaker 1: they stole over seven thousand copies.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Wow, I remember that, and I just cudn't believe that
- 27:58Speaker 3: that was like that this was like a major headline,
- 28:01Speaker 3: but like, oh my god, it's such a big deal though,
- 28:03Speaker 3: because I mean those the books were so like you know,
- 28:06Speaker 3: behind lock and key, like I'll never forget the boxes, you.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Know of like do not open this.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Yeah, the day and it was like the really big
- 28:14Speaker 3: start of like street dated things.
- 28:16Speaker 4: I feel like and like.
- 28:17Speaker 3: This is a big deal, like can't spoil it before
- 28:20Speaker 3: it comes out.
- 28:21Speaker 1: But I wanted to read this article from CNN because
- 28:25Speaker 1: I just think it's funny, like looking back now at
- 28:28Speaker 1: like how big this was, I feel like we don't
- 28:31Speaker 1: think about it that much anymore, but this was crazy
- 28:34Speaker 1: like that a book cost this. But here's from the article.
- 28:40Speaker 1: It says the appetite for all things related to Harry
- 28:44Speaker 1: Potter shows no sign of abating, as police said thousands
- 28:48Speaker 1: of copies of the eagerly awaited new book had been stolen.
- 28:52Speaker 1: The seven thousand, six hundred and eighty copies of Harry
- 28:55Speaker 1: Potter and The Order of the Phoenix worth an estimated
- 28:58Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty thousand, five hundred and sixty pounds
- 29:03Speaker 1: or about twenty to wait, yeah, two hundred and twenty
- 29:08Speaker 1: thousand dollars US dollars were taken from a trading estate
- 29:11Speaker 1: in Merseyside, Northwest England, at the weekend. Officers said on Tuesday,
- 29:17Speaker 1: the books, each weighing two pounds, were stolen from a
- 29:20Speaker 1: trailer which was later found abandoned. Police warned anyone tempted
- 29:25Speaker 1: to handle copies of the book before its official publication
- 29:28Speaker 1: on Saturday that they could face criminal charges. If anyone
- 29:35Speaker 1: is offered the book prior to Saturday or after Saturday
- 29:38Speaker 1: at a reduced price, they should immediately contact us. That
- 29:41Speaker 1: a police spokeswoman love this. The thefts are the latest
- 29:49Speaker 1: crimes connected to Harry Potter. Last month, four people were arrested.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Oh wow, they didn't proofread this. This literally says last
- 29:57Speaker 1: month four people were arrested last month in Suffolk, Eastern England.
- 30:01Speaker 4: It was such breaking news. They just had to get it.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Out curiously typing this in connection with the discovery of
- 30:09Speaker 1: two copies of the latest book.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:13Speaker 1: So yeah, that's the gist of it. There's more in
- 30:17Speaker 1: this article. But I just think that's so funny.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, I can't even imagine, like if something like
- 30:25Speaker 3: that happened.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Well, I mean, and you have to think too at
- 30:27Speaker 4: that time.
- 30:28Speaker 3: I mean, the internet wasn't even exactly like what it
- 30:31Speaker 3: is now, So like if this happened now, like yeah.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Right, Like we did get a leak on the internet
- 30:36Speaker 1: before Deathly Hallows, but these days it would have been
- 30:41Speaker 1: the full book, would have happened with all of the books.
- 30:47Speaker 1: But yeah, after that event, later installments were transported in
- 30:52Speaker 1: armored vehicles. So all in all, the series has sold
- 30:58Speaker 1: more than six hundred million copies as of twenty twenty three.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I couldn't find twenty twenty fours numbers yet. And that's
- 31:07Speaker 1: just the books, because obviously then there's also the films,
- 31:11Speaker 1: which extended the midnight release. Mayhem passed when the book
- 31:15Speaker 1: stopped coming out, because we had midnight showings for most
- 31:19Speaker 1: of the films. And the film series is the fourth
- 31:24Speaker 1: highest grossing film series of all time with seven point
- 31:28Speaker 1: seven billion dollars worldwide, which keeps going up because we
- 31:32Speaker 1: know they keep bringing those films back to the theaters
- 31:35Speaker 1: to do those showings that they do, so that number
- 31:40Speaker 1: will grow. Deathly Hallo's Part two is the eighteenth highest
- 31:46Speaker 1: grossing film of all time, making over one billion dollars,
- 31:50Speaker 1: which breaking a billion dollars is very very rare. There's
- 31:56Speaker 1: not too many films that do that. The films were
- 32:01Speaker 1: released over the span of ten years, so we got
- 32:06Speaker 1: quite a bit of time with the books coming out,
- 32:08Speaker 1: and we got another decade with the films coming out.
- 32:11Speaker 1: There was some overlap, but that really extended this period
- 32:15Speaker 1: of just the obsession with Harry Potter that was so
- 32:21Speaker 1: permeated pop culture during that time. Everybody knew it, everybody
- 32:27Speaker 1: knew what happened in it, even if you hadn't ever
- 32:30Speaker 1: read it, Like it was just one of those things
- 32:33Speaker 1: that was so ingrained in society really at that point.
- 32:39Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 32:41Speaker 1: And now we're thirteen years after the last film was released,
- 32:45Speaker 1: and we've had theme parks open up with that new
- 32:48Speaker 1: expansion coming to Orlando next year twenty twenty five, right,
- 32:55Speaker 1: We've had the stage play Churs Child, we had three
- 32:58Speaker 1: spin off films with the Fantastic Beast series. We've had
- 33:02Speaker 1: lots of video games, mobile aps, remember Wizards Unite, Oh yeah, yeah,
- 33:10Speaker 1: oh man. And now we've got this TV series as
- 33:13Speaker 1: well to look forward to. So, you know, it's interesting
- 33:18Speaker 1: to look back at where we've been, but also it's
- 33:23Speaker 1: interesting that this just keeps going, like it's still one
- 33:28Speaker 1: of those things that is like it could have just
- 33:30Speaker 1: had its moment and then faded away, but it's still
- 33:34Speaker 1: there and new generations keep getting reignited and fascinated by it,
- 33:41Speaker 1: and it really just sticks around. It's really had quite
- 33:43Speaker 1: the longevity.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think that it like has had such
- 33:48Speaker 3: a great like cultural impact because I think that you know,
- 33:53Speaker 3: we had that split with you know, deactly how it
- 33:55Speaker 3: was part one in part two, and then all of
- 33:57Speaker 3: a sudden it became cool to separate, you know, that
- 34:00Speaker 3: we saw it later with Breaking Dawn Part one and
- 34:02Speaker 3: part two. And I think too, like the fact that
- 34:06Speaker 3: you know, it's it's so crazy to me to think
- 34:09Speaker 3: that we're thirteen years from the last film being released,
- 34:12Speaker 3: like where is my life going? But but like it's
- 34:16Speaker 3: the fact that it's just still so big and everything.
- 34:19Speaker 3: I think that it's you know, probably played a role
- 34:21Speaker 3: and like resurgence and like other things that we've seen,
- 34:24Speaker 3: you know, like obviously we have these other big fantoms
- 34:26Speaker 3: like Lord of the Rings and then eventually it's like,
- 34:28Speaker 3: you know, hey, let's do this Rings of Power TV
- 34:30Speaker 3: series and now.
- 34:31Speaker 4: That's kind of coming back.
- 34:33Speaker 3: And then obviously like Hunger Games is kind of not
- 34:35Speaker 3: this resurgence you know, with more material coming there as well.
- 34:40Speaker 3: And I think that it just had such a big impact.
- 34:45Speaker 3: It seems like it was like the first to really
- 34:47Speaker 3: do that and really have the kind of impact that
- 34:50Speaker 3: it did and kind of really just set up how
- 34:53Speaker 3: so many other like fandoms have evolved over time.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Totally.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:58Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think all so the fact that it
- 35:02Speaker 5: never died down, that it always it was always like
- 35:06Speaker 5: record breaking and there was always like so you know,
- 35:09Speaker 5: people queuing whenever a store opens or whenever a new
- 35:12Speaker 5: theme park attraction opens, and it's still you know, it's
- 35:16Speaker 5: still pretty much alive. So it never went anywhere like
- 35:19Speaker 5: with the Hunger Games when it ended, like there was
- 35:22Speaker 5: this lapse, you know, this time period with you know,
- 35:25Speaker 5: you didn't really get much hype around it. But suddenly
- 35:28Speaker 5: there was a new book coming out, there was a
- 35:30Speaker 5: new movie coming out, and people were going back and
- 35:33Speaker 5: revisiting it and viewing it for the first time. You
- 35:35Speaker 5: had reactors all over YouTube, just really really hyped for
- 35:40Speaker 5: what was coming. So it started having this resurgence. And
- 35:44Speaker 5: I feel like for Harry Potter, that resurgence is always
- 35:48Speaker 5: there in some ways, like it's it's so powerful and
- 35:51Speaker 5: the fact that newer generations are you know, I have
- 35:54Speaker 5: family members like cousins whose daughters and sons are picking
- 35:59Speaker 5: up the books and they are sessed with them and
- 36:00Speaker 5: they're watching the films, and so it's like, it's so
- 36:04Speaker 5: crazy to think, like, twenty plus years later, it's still
- 36:06Speaker 5: going strong, and you know, we haven't necessarily had anything
- 36:11Speaker 5: new from Harry Potter itself for the past thirteen years,
- 36:15Speaker 5: so that just speaks volumes of how much of a
- 36:18Speaker 5: cultural impact.
- 36:19Speaker 2: It was and it will continue to be, for sure, absolutely.
- 36:24Speaker 1: And it's funny like I teach high school and these
- 36:29Speaker 1: kids come in and they're wearing their Hogwarts T shirts.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Like they'll be like, oh, what what house are you in?
- 36:36Speaker 1: Blah blah blah, And it's just funny to me, like
- 36:39Speaker 1: these are kids who, mind you, were born in like
- 36:41Speaker 1: two thousands, so they were like one when Deathly Hallis
- 36:46Speaker 1: came out the book. So it's just funny that like
- 36:51Speaker 1: they're so into it still and it's still such a
- 36:54Speaker 1: prominent thing, and it's just like normal language to be like, hey,
- 36:59Speaker 1: what's your Hogwarts have like, and yeah, you know the answer.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Well, it's like people who like never got into it,
- 37:06Speaker 3: you know, or really knew, you know, never really knew
- 37:09Speaker 3: anything about it, like they know, like the term muggle
- 37:12Speaker 3: is you know, from is from Harry Potter, or like
- 37:15Speaker 3: just those words like quidditch, like you know, you don't
- 37:17Speaker 3: have to have read the books or even seen the films.
- 37:19Speaker 3: You know, you probably know what quidditch is. And I
- 37:22Speaker 3: think even just the amount of people that go to
- 37:24Speaker 3: the theme parks who you know, have never read the
- 37:28Speaker 3: books or you know, seen the films or and they
- 37:31Speaker 3: still love it and enjoy it. And I think even
- 37:33Speaker 3: sometimes going to that park maybe sparks an interest for
- 37:37Speaker 3: them to then go and watch the films or you know,
- 37:39Speaker 3: even read the books. And it's I mean, it's I
- 37:43Speaker 3: can't think of many other things, you know. I mean
- 37:45Speaker 3: obviously I do think of like Star Wars and stuff
- 37:47Speaker 3: like that, but I can't think of many other things
- 37:50Speaker 3: that have been able to kind of like remain at
- 37:52Speaker 3: this like dominant level for so long while you know,
- 37:56Speaker 3: more and more media has come out since then, and
- 37:59Speaker 3: like I said, I think Harry really sparked this huge thing,
- 38:02Speaker 3: and so there's been so many things that have come
- 38:04Speaker 3: out that could have overdominated it, right, and it like
- 38:08Speaker 3: never did I feel.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Like, yeah, yeah, I think you're right. The only thing
- 38:13Speaker 1: you can really compare to is Star Wars, Like I
- 38:16Speaker 1: feel like that's the only comparison you could draw.
- 38:20Speaker 3: And yeah, I think I mean because I think, you know,
- 38:23Speaker 3: you had like when Star Wars kind of you know,
- 38:26Speaker 3: had after the original films and before the prequels and
- 38:29Speaker 3: stuff there was, and then after the prequels and then
- 38:31Speaker 3: when there was this kind of huge latency period before
- 38:34Speaker 3: you know, the Disney buyout and everything, you had your
- 38:36Speaker 3: niche fans that were still you know, and there was
- 38:38Speaker 3: books that were coming out and everything there. But I
- 38:42Speaker 3: think it kind of maybe even faded a little bit
- 38:44Speaker 3: at that time where I feel like Harry Potter just
- 38:46Speaker 3: hasn't And of course Star Wars has been around so
- 38:48Speaker 3: much longer than Harry Potter, so you know, we might
- 38:51Speaker 3: see that happen with Harry Potter as well. But yeah,
- 38:53Speaker 3: you've had these two like just massive medias that have
- 38:58Speaker 3: just and they've become so it's like you mentioned too,
- 39:00Speaker 3: it's like it's like just that multimedia approach to and like,
- 39:05Speaker 3: you know, it's so crazy to think how you know,
- 39:09Speaker 3: this this book series you know that kind of just
- 39:13Speaker 3: came about you know, is now permeated almost every major
- 39:18Speaker 3: form of media that you can think of.
- 39:23Speaker 4: Yeah, it's such a feat I.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Think it really is. So, you know, now that we've
- 39:31Speaker 1: kind of looked back a little bit at the series,
- 39:33Speaker 1: that I want to look back at our own relationship
- 39:37Speaker 1: with the series, and I thought it'd be interesting to
- 39:41Speaker 1: know how and why did you fall in love with
- 39:46Speaker 1: the Wizarding World.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean kind of like exactly what we were
- 39:51Speaker 3: just talking about like makes me think of like my
- 39:55Speaker 3: story in terms of like, you know, I got a
- 39:57Speaker 3: copy of Sorcerer's Stone at my school book fair at school,
- 40:02Speaker 3: and it was rarely shortly after it was released. I
- 40:05Speaker 3: was like seven or eight years old at the time,
- 40:08Speaker 3: you know when the book was released, and when or
- 40:10Speaker 3: when I started reading it. I'm not sure exactly, you know,
- 40:12Speaker 3: when I got it, but it's just such a special
- 40:16Speaker 3: memory for me because it was I feel like it
- 40:20Speaker 3: it's the only book from like my childhood that I
- 40:22Speaker 3: remember like reading, like like physically remember like sitting on
- 40:26Speaker 3: the floor like reading it and like I'll never forget
- 40:29Speaker 3: to my grandmother like reading the ending chapters to me,
- 40:32Speaker 3: Like that's a memory that I kind of you know,
- 40:34Speaker 3: just will always have. And then I, like, you know,
- 40:38Speaker 3: I think then there was a few years before I
- 40:40Speaker 3: read Chamber of Secrets, and then honestly, like I kind
- 40:43Speaker 3: of sort of fell off and I kind of continued
- 40:46Speaker 3: to get the books and they kind of collected dust
- 40:48Speaker 3: a little bit on my shelves.
- 40:50Speaker 4: But then like once you.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Know, it breached that like movie territory and that medium
- 40:55Speaker 3: came up, and I remember, like, you know, getting to
- 40:58Speaker 3: the Age and Prisoner of Azkaban movie coming out, and
- 41:00Speaker 3: I was like, gosh, like I gotta read this book,
- 41:02Speaker 3: you know, before I see this movie, and kind of
- 41:05Speaker 3: like that's where the rest was kind of history for me,
- 41:08Speaker 3: was reading that book in preparation for the movie, and
- 41:12Speaker 3: then that was my you know, hook line and sinker
- 41:14Speaker 3: into getting into this fandom.
- 41:17Speaker 4: And I think that like I really just fell in
- 41:20Speaker 4: love with.
- 41:20Speaker 3: It because it's with such well it not just was
- 41:23Speaker 3: it still is such good storytelling and such a detailed
- 41:26Speaker 3: and immersive world. And I think truly it was my
- 41:29Speaker 3: very first experience with like being like reading a book
- 41:32Speaker 3: series that's that that has world building like that and
- 41:36Speaker 3: just the immersion, and I think that I was always
- 41:39Speaker 3: probably predisposed to become obsessive with things like this, and
- 41:43Speaker 3: it just kind of took being exposed to that type
- 41:46Speaker 3: of storytelling.
- 41:48Speaker 1: I think, yeah, yeah, it's funny because I think hearing
- 41:54Speaker 1: your timeline, I think I got into it probably around
- 41:58Speaker 1: the same time actually, because nineteen September one, nineteen ninety eight,
- 42:05Speaker 1: was when the first book was released in the US.
- 42:08Speaker 1: I would have been four years old at that point,
- 42:12Speaker 1: so I was not reading it. So yeah, I didn't
- 42:18Speaker 1: get into it until a few years later, right around
- 42:20Speaker 1: the time Prisoner of Azkaban the movie was coming out.
- 42:26Speaker 1: I was probably eight or nine maybe, and I got
- 42:32Speaker 1: the Sorcerer's Stone DVD for Christmas, and my sister got
- 42:38Speaker 1: the first four paperback books. Well, we watched the first movie,
- 42:43Speaker 1: loved it, and she had the books on her bookshelf
- 42:49Speaker 1: and she told me I was now old enough to
- 42:52Speaker 1: read those books, and I wouldn't be able to get
- 42:54Speaker 1: through them. So me being the competitive nuisance that I
- 42:58Speaker 1: am wrong, Yeah, I took that as a challenge and
- 43:03Speaker 1: I took the books off her shelf and read them
- 43:05Speaker 1: one by one, and I did, in fact finish them.
- 43:10Speaker 1: I had to have a dictionary, but it was an
- 43:12Speaker 1: easier read than when she challenged me to read Lord
- 43:15Speaker 1: at the Rings and I sat, they're very stubbornly trying
- 43:18Speaker 1: to do that. But yeah, it was around that time
- 43:22Speaker 1: and then the Prisoner of Azkaband movie came out, and
- 43:25Speaker 1: then yeah, from there it was all the midnight releases
- 43:27Speaker 1: and everything. But I think the reason I got so
- 43:33Speaker 1: obsessed is very similar to you, and that it was
- 43:36Speaker 1: this immersive world and it really felt like it was
- 43:41Speaker 1: written for me, and it didn't feel like other children's
- 43:45Speaker 1: literature that was kind of dumbed down, like it felt
- 43:49Speaker 1: like it was for your age group, but it was
- 43:53Speaker 1: more I don't know, like that they weren't like trying
- 43:58Speaker 1: to sugarcoat things.
- 44:02Speaker 3: I guess, no, I mean there's and I think it's
- 44:05Speaker 3: like how, you know, how the books kind of almost
- 44:07Speaker 3: age up with you, you know, for especially for us
- 44:09Speaker 3: that were there as they were being written, and you know,
- 44:11Speaker 3: they got progressively more challenging and darker in all of that,
- 44:15Speaker 3: and it's like, obviously those first two books are kind
- 44:17Speaker 3: of light and fluffy, but.
- 44:18Speaker 4: There's some dark stuff in there. Oh yeah, but there
- 44:21Speaker 4: really is.
- 44:22Speaker 3: And so like you're absolutely right that it was, like,
- 44:24Speaker 3: you know, JK. Rowling was not afraid to dumb down,
- 44:28Speaker 3: you know, but still keeping it light and fluffy and
- 44:31Speaker 3: introducing you to this world but then kind of like
- 44:34Speaker 3: throwing in this really.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Dark stuff too.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, it was like there was this trust in
- 44:40Speaker 1: you as a young kid reading these that you could
- 44:44Speaker 1: understand the themes and really kind of grasp it. But
- 44:50Speaker 1: I also, like so many people who I think, really
- 44:54Speaker 1: held onto these books so fast and hard. Was it
- 45:00Speaker 1: It felt like you belonged in that world and it
- 45:04Speaker 1: felt like those characters were there for you in a
- 45:09Speaker 1: way that I don't think other books did for me
- 45:12Speaker 1: at that time. And I was a bookworm, like I
- 45:15Speaker 1: was reading a lot, but I think just a lot
- 45:20Speaker 1: of us who felt kind of like misfits growing up,
- 45:23Speaker 1: this was that place that we were able to escape
- 45:25Speaker 1: to and seeing a character like Hermione who I could
- 45:31Speaker 1: hundred percent relate to and like the description of like
- 45:36Speaker 1: the big front teeth and the bushy brown hair, like
- 45:40Speaker 1: that's me and that's what I always struggled with, like
- 45:43Speaker 1: looking at myself in the mirror. So it was one
- 45:47Speaker 1: of those things where it just felt like it was
- 45:51Speaker 1: there for you to belong in that space, and that's
- 45:54Speaker 1: what it continued to be for me growing up. That's
- 45:57Speaker 1: what it continued to be all through high school and
- 46:00Speaker 1: college and now into adulthood. And I just feel like
- 46:05Speaker 1: at every point in my life, I keep coming back
- 46:09Speaker 1: to the stories in the world, and I relate in
- 46:12Speaker 1: different ways and it means something more to me at
- 46:16Speaker 1: different times in my life, depending on what I'm going through.
- 46:21Speaker 5: Okay, so to me, it was back in two thousand
- 46:24Speaker 5: and one, my cousin literally almost like dragged me to
- 46:29Speaker 5: the cinema to see this boy wizard.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Who didn't know he was a wizard.
- 46:36Speaker 5: And I was like, oh, this sounds cheesy, this sounds like,
- 46:39Speaker 5: you know, like something I seen before. Like I wasn't
- 46:42Speaker 5: like I was just being a child, And so I
- 46:44Speaker 5: went there, I saw the film, and I completely fell
- 46:48Speaker 5: in love with it. The whole story just everything was
- 46:53Speaker 5: so it was so compelling, and I think it was
- 46:58Speaker 5: just the magic, just how beautiful it was and how
- 47:03Speaker 5: real it was at the same time, because it wasn't
- 47:05Speaker 5: it wasn't like something oh magical like coming from a
- 47:08Speaker 5: fairy tale. It literally seemed like something that could happen
- 47:11Speaker 5: to you, and it feels like in your world. But
- 47:14Speaker 5: at the same time, a different world inside your world
- 47:17Speaker 5: because it's kind of like a fantasy. So I just yeah,
- 47:21Speaker 5: I just felt it was so relatable and the characters
- 47:25Speaker 5: and it was it was such a magical experience. And
- 47:28Speaker 5: then after that, I started going to the movie screenings.
- 47:32Speaker 5: I hadn't read the books yet, so I waited a
- 47:34Speaker 5: little bit on that, but yeah, so I started like
- 47:38Speaker 5: going to the to the screenings and.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Just became obsessed with it.
- 47:44Speaker 5: I bought the video games I had, like I was.
- 47:49Speaker 5: I started like, I literally played I Was Harry Potter
- 47:52Speaker 5: in a bathrobe and I had my own stick that
- 47:56Speaker 5: was like a wand and then it was, yeah, it
- 48:00Speaker 5: was I was just like all over it, like I
- 48:05Speaker 5: loved it, and it became it became part of my life.
- 48:08Speaker 5: Like people started to know me, and five, you know,
- 48:12Speaker 5: or not even five minutes, like two minutes into knowing me,
- 48:14Speaker 5: they were like, oh, yeah, so you're Harry. You're a
- 48:16Speaker 5: Harry Potter fan. So I've always I've always been the
- 48:19Speaker 5: Harry Potter fan kid. And yeah, later on I started
- 48:24Speaker 5: reading the books, and prior to the release, I think
- 48:26Speaker 5: the first one that I read, I think I think
- 48:31Speaker 5: the first one, to be honest with half Blood Prince
- 48:34Speaker 5: the first one I read before the film came out,
- 48:39Speaker 5: and then the other books like I did read them,
- 48:41Speaker 5: but not prior to the release of the of the films.
- 48:45Speaker 5: And yeah, I just I just remember feeling it was.
- 48:49Speaker 5: It was for me, It was for a long time.
- 48:53Speaker 5: It was like the reason that I wanted to just
- 48:58Speaker 5: live another year, if that makes sense, because you know,
- 49:01Speaker 5: your teenage years are hard.
- 49:02Speaker 2: You go through a lot of things. You go through
- 49:04Speaker 2: you know, people either.
- 49:06Speaker 5: Bully you or they are you know, they are judging
- 49:09Speaker 5: you for being different, and you you know, your look
- 49:12Speaker 5: down on because of that. So and while you're going
- 49:16Speaker 5: through that, and I remember just picking up a copy
- 49:19Speaker 5: of you know, one of the books and just reading
- 49:21Speaker 5: the chapters. I was going through a lot of like
- 49:23Speaker 5: anxiety and just wasn't going through a really good time.
- 49:26Speaker 5: And that was like my sort of beaking of hope
- 49:29Speaker 5: too and my guiding light just picking up that book
- 49:33Speaker 5: and just finding that outlet that took me into a
- 49:37Speaker 5: different reality where I could literally just be happy. And
- 49:42Speaker 5: just so I owe in many ways, I feel like
- 49:44Speaker 5: I owe my life to these books and to these
- 49:48Speaker 5: films because they were always an outlet for me and
- 49:52Speaker 5: I just really appreciate how like you said, you know,
- 49:56Speaker 5: it's like the characters, how relatable they are. Like I
- 49:59Speaker 5: also found myself, you know, Like I saw Hermione, I
- 50:03Speaker 5: was like, oh my god, she's you know, she's she's amazing,
- 50:06Speaker 5: you know. And I also saw myself in her. And
- 50:09Speaker 5: I saw a little bit of myself in Harry, and
- 50:11Speaker 5: I saw a little bit of myself in Ron. So
- 50:14Speaker 5: it was just always just finding that little bit of
- 50:17Speaker 5: magic that my life needed. And it was the perfect getaway,
- 50:22Speaker 5: to be honest, and it just continued growing, and it continued,
- 50:26Speaker 5: you know, to inspire me in so many ways.
- 50:29Speaker 2: So and it still does to this day.
- 50:31Speaker 5: So I'm always going to be forever grateful for everything
- 50:36Speaker 5: this series has given me and everything that you know,
- 50:39Speaker 5: I because I wouldn't be who I am today if
- 50:42Speaker 5: if Harry Potter hadn't been part of my life, I
- 50:46Speaker 5: would be a completely different person.
- 50:48Speaker 2: So I owe it all to this series.
- 50:53Speaker 1: It's so interesting to think about, like if we never
- 50:57Speaker 1: read these books or watched these movies, what our lives
- 51:01Speaker 1: would be like. It's very very strange.
- 51:04Speaker 3: I mean yeah, I mean I can't even imagine because
- 51:06Speaker 3: it's like I think, like like really similar to kind
- 51:09Speaker 3: of what you just said, Tom, I feel like nothing
- 51:12Speaker 3: in my life has had as much of an impact
- 51:14Speaker 3: on me as Harry Potter.
- 51:16Speaker 4: And I think, like to some people who.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Are not part of like that fandom obsessive culture, that
- 51:21Speaker 3: probably sounds absolutely ridiculous.
- 51:23Speaker 4: Right, but I think that like it really has been.
- 51:27Speaker 3: Like obviously, like I'm so happy that I was, you know,
- 51:31Speaker 3: part of the generation that got to grow up with
- 51:34Speaker 3: the books and with the movies and you know, and
- 51:37Speaker 3: just experience all of that. And like I mean, I'm
- 51:40Speaker 3: thirty three years old right now, and so like honestly,
- 51:44Speaker 3: like Harry Potter has been like the biggest constant in my.
- 51:47Speaker 4: Life, like outside of like my family. You know.
- 51:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like Harry Potter has been there. And it's
- 51:53Speaker 3: one of those things where even if sometimes it might
- 51:56Speaker 3: take the back seat for me because you know, I'm
- 51:58Speaker 3: in my Disney era or I'm in Taylor Swift era
- 52:01Speaker 3: or whatever, it is, like Harry Potter's still there, like
- 52:04Speaker 3: you know, Homwards is always there to welcome me home.
- 52:07Speaker 3: And it just is always there and it always comes
- 52:09Speaker 3: back and it's never going anywhere. And I mean I
- 52:12Speaker 3: have two Harry Potter tattoos, So it's literally never going
- 52:15Speaker 3: anywhere for me.
- 52:17Speaker 4: It will be there in the grave.
- 52:18Speaker 3: So it's just so crazy to think of having something
- 52:22Speaker 3: be such a constant, you know, in your life. And
- 52:25Speaker 3: like for me, it was my gateway fandom and it
- 52:27Speaker 3: really molded the like my personality, and I think, like
- 52:32Speaker 3: my personality now is all about my nerdy life, you know,
- 52:36Speaker 3: and all these fandoms that I'm a part of in
- 52:37Speaker 3: the media that I consume. And I always wonder like
- 52:40Speaker 3: if Harry Potter hadn't been there and kind of been
- 52:42Speaker 3: that gateway for me, like would that still like would
- 52:45Speaker 3: that have been like my personality now?
- 52:48Speaker 4: Like it's so crazy to think about.
- 52:51Speaker 3: I can't even think about what, yeah, what my life
- 52:53Speaker 3: would be like if it wasn't there. And I think, like,
- 52:57Speaker 3: you know, it's been there for me for really good
- 52:59Speaker 3: times and really bad and challenging times, and yeah, it's
- 53:05Speaker 3: just crazy to like when you really stop and think
- 53:06Speaker 3: about it.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 53:09Speaker 1: So are Hogwarts houses. We've talked about how you know,
- 53:14Speaker 1: that's culturally just everyone just knows. So I'm a hufflepuff,
- 53:17Speaker 1: I'm a griffin door, So I want to know, do
- 53:21Speaker 1: we all think that our Hogwarts houses are accurate, and
- 53:26Speaker 1: is our pot or more house the same as what
- 53:29Speaker 1: you would pick for yourself.
- 53:32Speaker 3: Well, so I have like a very I feel like
- 53:35Speaker 3: just interesting story. I think with houses because I lived
- 53:39Speaker 3: most of my life as a raven cloth, I'm like
- 53:41Speaker 3: a newly converted Slytherin as of you know, the last
- 53:44Speaker 3: several years, and so I you know, maybe people don't
- 53:48Speaker 3: believe in that, you know that you can't switch your
- 53:51Speaker 3: house or whatever, but you know, at the end of
- 53:52Speaker 3: the day, this is still just like you know, as
- 53:55Speaker 3: much as we want it to be real, it is you.
- 53:57Speaker 4: Know, what do you want? Right?
- 54:00Speaker 2: Sorry I think a minute spoilerler.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Yeah, So, I you know, did get to that point
- 54:07Speaker 3: where I made the choice that I'm like, man, I
- 54:09Speaker 3: think as I got older, I realized like you know,
- 54:12Speaker 3: I think, you know, growing up and when the books
- 54:14Speaker 3: first came out, Slytherin was like, oh my god, it's
- 54:16Speaker 3: the bad House.
- 54:17Speaker 4: And you know, we really.
- 54:19Speaker 3: Saw it through Harry's perspective, which obviously wasn't a great perspective,
- 54:23Speaker 3: and so as a little kid, you know, it's kind
- 54:25Speaker 3: of like, well, I don't want to be like with
- 54:27Speaker 3: the bad guys.
- 54:28Speaker 4: You know, and then I think as.
- 54:29Speaker 3: You get older and you mature and you learn, you realize,
- 54:32Speaker 3: like there's so much more to Slytherin House than that,
- 54:35Speaker 3: and I think, like, I'm still very much a very
- 54:38Speaker 3: big secondary Raven club, Like if you take those quizzes
- 54:42Speaker 3: that give you the percentage, like my Slytherin and Raven
- 54:44Speaker 3: Clob percentages are so like they're very very similar. But
- 54:50Speaker 3: I just like felt so at home once I kind
- 54:53Speaker 3: of realized that, like, no, I think I fit.
- 54:55Speaker 4: More in Slytherin.
- 54:57Speaker 3: And so my original Pado Moore house was Raven Clob
- 55:00Speaker 3: like and I agreed with that at the time. I
- 55:02Speaker 3: kind of do still agree with it, you know, And
- 55:04Speaker 3: at the time in my life when I took that
- 55:06Speaker 3: quiz and then eventually like I made a new account
- 55:12Speaker 3: and that gave me Slytherin. And the whole time I
- 55:15Speaker 3: was answering it, I kind of was like, man, did
- 55:17Speaker 3: I just get Slytherin? Because I kind of answered this
- 55:19Speaker 3: in a way to get Slytherin. And then I realized, man,
- 55:22Speaker 3: that's a real Slytherin thing to do, so, you know,
- 55:26Speaker 3: answer this in a way to get the outcome that
- 55:28Speaker 3: you want. And I was like, yeah, that's my confirmation.
- 55:32Speaker 4: So and then I got.
- 55:33Speaker 3: Slytherin on the official the official quiz, and actually almost
- 55:35Speaker 3: every every test I've taken since I made the transition
- 55:39Speaker 3: to being a Slytherin, I've gotten Slytherin. So my answer
- 55:44Speaker 3: is like, actually, I do think it is accurate, and
- 55:46Speaker 3: it was accurate for me both times, and at the
- 55:49Speaker 3: time it was what it is, what I would have
- 55:51Speaker 3: picked for myself both times.
- 55:54Speaker 1: Well. As Dumbledore says, we sort too soon, So.
- 55:59Speaker 3: We sort too soon, And I think absolutely, because I
- 56:02Speaker 3: think the person I am now and the person I
- 56:04Speaker 3: am when I realized, I, you know, I was more,
- 56:07Speaker 3: maybe just a little bit more of a Slytherin, like
- 56:09Speaker 3: the person that I was at eleven and through a
- 56:11Speaker 3: lot of that time identified as raven Claw. Like I,
- 56:15Speaker 3: you know, I don't know if it was a so yeah,
- 56:16Speaker 3: I think maybe it was a sor too soon, you know.
- 56:19Speaker 3: And we evolve in our life and I think you can't.
- 56:22Speaker 3: I think we all possess traits of all the houses,
- 56:24Speaker 3: you know, and we're not all perfect fits. There's a
- 56:27Speaker 3: lot of parts of Slytherin that I don't fit with,
- 56:30Speaker 3: Like I don't think i'd become a dark wizard. If
- 56:32Speaker 3: I was in the world you, No, I don't think
- 56:34Speaker 3: I would. I would have turned to that way of life.
- 56:38Speaker 5: But you know, I think that it is you would
- 56:41Speaker 5: have gone straight to the dungeons.
- 56:44Speaker 3: I mean what I see like now, the biggest thing
- 56:47Speaker 3: that I identify with with with Slytherin is self preservation.
- 56:51Speaker 4: That is my biggest thing.
- 56:53Speaker 3: So I would have absolutely been down there and I've
- 56:55Speaker 3: been like, you don't need to get me out.
- 56:57Speaker 4: I'm protected down here. You all can sacrifice yourself. I'm
- 57:01Speaker 4: staying down here.
- 57:03Speaker 1: But I'm out there like burn it all down, Like
- 57:07Speaker 1: I'm not kidding him.
- 57:08Speaker 3: Were like, you know our hofflepast Slytherin's like we're truly
- 57:11Speaker 3: embody that.
- 57:12Speaker 4: But I think, like what's really hard about houses.
- 57:14Speaker 3: Right is like it's so it's such a it's a
- 57:16Speaker 3: box and you can't fit we can't fit anybody.
- 57:19Speaker 4: Into like just one box.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Absolutely, And so that's what That's what I used to
- 57:23Speaker 3: justify my transition in life from raven Claw to Slytherin.
- 57:27Speaker 3: M hm.
- 57:28Speaker 1: So makes sense.
- 57:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel like in my case, I was always
- 57:33Speaker 5: a Gryffindor. I know people have this misconception that oh,
- 57:35Speaker 5: you're in Gryfindor because of Harry, and you know, if
- 57:39Speaker 5: we're starters, red is my favorite color.
- 57:41Speaker 2: I know, it's kind of like maroons ish.
- 57:44Speaker 3: Color, but green's my favorite too. Yeah, and I always
- 57:48Speaker 3: wanted to buy Slytherin merch so you know it.
- 57:50Speaker 2: Makes sense, right, Yeah, it does.
- 57:53Speaker 5: And also like I always felt like very connected to
- 57:56Speaker 5: Gryffindor to everything that it represented. So when I did
- 57:59Speaker 5: my first test on Potter Moore in twenty eleven, remember
- 58:02Speaker 5: we had to collect those feathers that would get us
- 58:05Speaker 5: like early access into the into Potter more So, I
- 58:08Speaker 5: remember just I took the the sorting hat quiz, and
- 58:12Speaker 5: I remember I did Actually the complete opposite happened to me, Nicole,
- 58:17Speaker 5: because I did everything at Gryffindor would answer, and funnily enough,
- 58:22Speaker 5: I got Ravenclaw and I was like I got into
- 58:26Speaker 5: this serious you know that there was this whole like
- 58:30Speaker 5: in twenty eleven, there was like this whole like house
- 58:33Speaker 5: crisis identity thing going on in the fandom because suddenly
- 58:36Speaker 5: people who were in a certain house were suddenly turned
- 58:40Speaker 5: told oh, no, you belong in this house. So I
- 58:43Speaker 5: was like, no, I can't be Raven Claw. I don't
- 58:45Speaker 5: know why I chose raven Claw, and it was because
- 58:47Speaker 5: literally I had I hadn't answered the quiz like with
- 58:53Speaker 5: what I would have answered originally, so I remember I
- 58:57Speaker 5: had to do it another you know, I had, I
- 58:59Speaker 5: couldn't get over. So I was like, Okay, I'm gonna
- 59:01Speaker 5: do it a second time if I'm still Ravenclaw. Okay,
- 59:03Speaker 5: that's it. There's no going back. I have to fully
- 59:05Speaker 5: embrace it. But I took it the second time, and
- 59:08Speaker 5: I did it like very transparently, like I didn't try to,
- 59:12Speaker 5: you know, Gryffindor my way in and yeah, so I
- 59:18Speaker 5: actually got Gryffindor. And I actually have taken like two
- 59:21Speaker 5: more quizzes on potter More and I always get Gryffindor
- 59:24Speaker 5: no matter what, like anything, Like obviously I always select
- 59:29Speaker 5: like options, but the options you get are always different,
- 59:32Speaker 5: so whatever my choices are, like, I still get Gryffindor.
- 59:36Speaker 5: So I'm very proud of it because it's like, Okay, yeah,
- 59:38Speaker 5: I actually did belong in this house, and I'm very happy.
- 59:41Speaker 2: And I had everything, like I had my whole.
- 59:42Speaker 5: Gryffindor attire, like my my robes, my my tie, my everything,
- 59:47Speaker 5: so I was like, no, I cannot like switch now
- 59:49Speaker 5: and be a raven Claw, you know. So I was like, yeah,
- 59:53Speaker 5: I'm still I'm still happy to be in Gryffindor. And
- 59:55Speaker 5: I of course, like what you said, Nicole, like picking
- 59:58Speaker 5: up what you said. It's not you know, like you
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: your house doesn't always represent you one. It's obviously there's
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: certain traits that are more prominent in your personality and
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: maybe that's what you know drives you to a certain house.
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: So I feel like that's my case with Gryffindor, because
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: I'm not like, oh, I'm bold all the time and
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: I'm brave, and I'm like, I obviously get scared, and
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: obviously I you know, sometimes I would go down the
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: dungeons with you guys. You know, I'm not sure i'd
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: be like up for you know, trying to win a
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: battle against Voldemort and the death Theaters, but who knows. Like,
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: but at the same time, I do feel like I
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: have a lot of the traits and personality, you know,
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: characteristics that really form a Gryffindor. So I'm just yeah,
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: I'm a proud, proud, very proud Gryfindor.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: All right, Yeah, so we have three of the four
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: Hogwarts houses because I am in Hufflepuff. I am always
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: in Hufflepuff, no matter what quiz I.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: Take, I am not surprised at all. Yeah, you and
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: body Hufflepuff so much.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: I've made oh yes, six or seven pot or more
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: accounts at this point, and every time it's snuffle pup.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Why do we have that? Why do we do that?
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Do?
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: Why do are we always like, you know, second guessing ourselves?
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Like maybe it's changed this time. I don't know, but yeah,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: it makes sense. I'm at peace with it. Little Amy
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: was upset because blue is my favorite color, and I
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: wanted to be in Ravenclaw, and I do think like
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: same as Nicole. I think raven Claw would be like
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: my secondary house. And I always kind of thought I
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: was Ravenclaw. But I think Hufflepuff makes a little more
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: sense because I think a lot of my smarts are
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: more like determination, and I'm not going to let this
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: thing beat me. So I'm gonna sit here and I'm
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: going to study like all night, every night until I
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: get what I want, which is a very Hufflepuff thing.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: Like I don't think that sort of stuff comes naturally
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: to me. I think it's all stuff that I've really
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: had to work for. So I do think that it
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: does make a lot more sense that I'm Hufflepuff, but
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I still love the color blue.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: Well, it's funny that you bring up the learning thing,
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: because I think like that actually like is a way
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: to really distinguish between some of the houses and kind
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: of like helped me as well, because obviously, like I've
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: always been very academic, and that's why I was like, oh, yeah,
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: of course I'm raven Claw, right, Like I have three
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: master's degrees, like academia. Academia has been my thing. But
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: it's kind of like I feel like I almost was
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: doing it more for like the prestige and like what
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: it could get me, more so than just for the
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: sake of learning. And that right there is the difference
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: between a raven Claw and a slotherin.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: Yeah, and I feel like this learning.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: Like why you do it, you know, it's just like
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: it all really comes back to the way you learn
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: and why and how and so it's just a little
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: interesting anecdote that I thought of when you brought that up,
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: like that that's kind of what differentiated for you as well.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, definitely, I mean and then just as I've aged,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: like I do realize about my personality, Like I am
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: very very loyal, but I'm not blindly loyal, like you
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: have to be someone who's earned that loyalty. And I'm
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: not afraid to like speak up or act out when
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: I see something that's not fair or not right, Like
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: I'm very like m M, that's not the way that
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: you're supposed to be. I'm gonna say something to you,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: whether you like it or not, whether it screws me
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: over or not, I'm going to say it because that's
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: the just way. So I think that's very very much.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: I think it's very accurate, and I'm okay with it
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: because badgers are adorable too, So.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: I think I think your thought on. I love the
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Hofflepuff merch. I think they just need to be a
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: little bit more consistent with the Yello they do.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: So then kind of our last discussion point here in
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: the main discussion to wrap things up. Obviously, we've talked
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: about how big of a role Harry Potter has played
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: in all of our lives up until this point, and
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: we'll probably continue to play. But what has been the
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: biggest way in which the Wizarding World has impacted your life.
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: Because of Harry Potter and because of the films, I
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: became obsessed with the audio visual part of it, and
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: I started you know, getting very like how is this done?
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: And how's this achieved? And you know, how can I
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: do this? And I started playing around with after effects
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: and starting creating like very you know, like certain attempts
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: of a luminous kind of effect. And I started playing
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: around with that, you know, just looking at a lot
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: of YouTube tutorials, and that actually kind of you know
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: set me up for like, okay, I actually liked this,
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: you know, post production kind of like part, and I
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: started pursuing, little by little a career in you know,
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: editing and in post production in general. So I feel
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: like because of the curiosity that it sparkled in me,
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: I was like starting to find, you know, my place
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: in the world as a professional. So even though I studied,
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: I majored in English into Spanish translation at university, my like,
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: my real passion is editing and I've always loved it.
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: And I feel obviously, if if Harry Potter hadn't been
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: part of my life, I don't think I would have
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: ventured into that creative outlet like I wouldn't have you know,
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: it goes back to not being the same person, but
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: even professionally, I think it just really built me up.
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: And I think that's probably like the way in which
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: it impacted me that, you know, like the first thing
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: I can actually come up that probably the most important one.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that is yeah, I think And I know this
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: is gonna sound really generic, but I think for me,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: it's definitely just the people that I've met. I would
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: never have met either of the two of you. If
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: it wasn't for Harry Potter. We wouldn't be sitting here recording.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: And I've ended up with pretty much all of my
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: best friends, my closest friends, I met because of Harry
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Potter one way or another.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: True.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: I mean, like Nicole, we met online because of Harry Potter.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Like what like twenty sixteen, twenty seventeen now or something
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: like that.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and just realized we lived like an hour
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: away from each other. I messaged her begging her to
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: be my friend.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: I mean, you didn't have to bag it in as
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: much at all.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: And then we met up and really hit it off.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: And I mean we talk every day, right, Like if
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I don't hear from you, I'm like, I wonder if
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Nicol's okay yea, but it's just funny, like those things
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: that would not be in your life if you didn't
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: just happen to open up a book in free.
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I actually also met like one of my closest friends.
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: She came from a Harry Potter fan site that was
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: from Latin America, and you know, you had like these
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: it were like these kind of like forums where you
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: would comment back when commenting was popular on websites and
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: we didn't have social media. So I remember posting my
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: Harry Potter collection in this website and she and she
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: replied and she goes, oh, this is so cool, like
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: and then we started like talking, and then you know,
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: we added each other on Facebook, and you know, we've
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: shared all over like twelve years of friendship now thirteen
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: years of friendship, and she's one of my best friends
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: and I'm so happy, you know, I'm so grateful to
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: have her in my life. And it's just like you said,
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: because you know, we opened a book, or because we
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: tuned in one of the movies, or you know, and
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: it changed our lives and it made us, you know,
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: get to know amazing people who not only share that
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: same passion but are also very kind and amazing people.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I mean I really don't have much more
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: else to like add to that.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Grateful you are for me, you know, and I think.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: Like that's exactly it for me too, Like I said earlier,
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: like Harry Potter has been the biggest constant in my
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: life and has really influenced so many decisions in my
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: life and influenced so many things that have happened in
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: my life, like including like me finding like my closest friends, right,
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: And so it's like, you know, I think that you know,
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: we grew up like don't meet people that you find
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: on the internet, and literally all of my best friends
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: and all people that have on the internet. But like,
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: you know, it's that would have never happened if it
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: wasn't for you know, JK.
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: Rowling writing this book series, and it's just.
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just I can't I mean, if somebody asked me, like,
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: what else has impacted your life? Like, I don't think
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: I'd be really hard pressed to like really like like
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: Harry Potter comes to me so so naturally and to
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: really think like what else has had a similar impact.
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: It just goes to show the domino effects of just
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: random little events throughout time and throughout your life that
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: lead you in a certain direction. So that wraps up
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: our main discussion specialis all right, So this is the
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: first time that we're doing our specialis Revellio segment. So
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: just to let you all know what this segment is about.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: In this segment, we look at the meaning behind names, dates, plants, spells,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: et cetera in the Wizarding World. So for our very
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: first episode, it seemed fitting to explore the Revellio charm.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Its uses variations and etymology. So Revellio reveals hidden secrets
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: when it's cast, and the anomology behind that incantation is
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Latin like usual, and it's the Latin word revelaire means
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: to unveil or reveal. And this spell is not really
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: used in the book so much in just that shortened
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: version of just Revellio. Book instances usually are the later
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: variations that we'll talk about a little bit in a minute,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: but we do see Revellio used in the Fantastic Beast films.
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Newton uses it on Graves to show that he's actually
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: grindel Wald. In the first film, and Hogwart's Legacy uses
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: this spell.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so if you.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Play Hogwart's Legacy you'll have it in your head. The
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: if you have not played the game, When you cast Revellio,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: it reveals these Revellio pages that are book pages you
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: can find all over the place, and those pages have
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: different information and lore about locations, characters, all that stuff.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: So then we get to our first variation of Revellio,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: which is the name of this segment, specialis Vellio, and
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: specialis Vellio reveals spells performed on objects or potients. And
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: again with the etymology, we know revel air Latin reveal
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: on veil and specialis is Latin for specific or particular,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: so revealing the specifics of something. So where we see
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: this used. Hermione tries to use it on Harry's copy
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: of Advanced Potion Making, but nothing happens. It kind of
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: depends on how you interpret that passage because something could
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: have happened and she just doesn't see it. Because depending
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: on how you read it, it kind of sounds like
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: the spell ended up revealing the ink writing property of
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: the half blood prints in the book, because Harry discovers
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: that writing like right after this happens, So it could
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: be that nothing happens, or it could be that her
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: casting that somehow revealed that ink. Who knows. It's up
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: to interpretation. And then the third and final variation is
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: hominem revellio, which reveals human presence. So again our etymology
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: revel air on veil reveal revellio. And the Latin hominem
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: spelled ho m I n um, which is different than
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: how it's spelled in the incantation that we know, which
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: is h O m E n um. The Latin hominem
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: with an i is the plural of homo, meaning person,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: so it reveals person. Hermione uses this in Deathly Hallows
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: at Grimaud Place when they first go in to check
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: that the coast is clear, and death Eaters use it
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: when they come to the love Goods House and the
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: trio is hiding upstairs. So that is Revellio in a nutshell.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: Very useful spell like.
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: It has a lot of different variations and uses that
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: you can like, I think in Hollward's legacy, Revellio like
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: specialities revelio hominum rebellio, like everything appears when you cast rebellio,
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: so it kind of encompasses everything.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, that'll be like you wouldn't have enough wheel
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: slots to have all the different versions of and have
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: to cycle through them.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: Okay, so now we're moving on to our discussion question,
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: which is what's the biggest impact the Harry Potter fandom
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: has had on your life? We would love to hear
- 1:15:17Speaker 5: from you. Drop us an email at Rebellio Podcast staff
